β-cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives containing aromatic triazole ring were studied as potential carriers of drugs containing an anthraquinone moiety in the structure: anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid (AQ2S), anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid (AQ2CA) and a common anthracycline, daunorubicin (DNR). UV-Vis and voltammetry measurements were carried out to determine the solubilities and stability constants of the complexes formed and revealed the unique properties of the chosen CDs as effective pH dependent drug complexing agents. The stability constants of the drug complexes with the CDs containing triazole: βCDLip and βCDGAL were significantly larger than with the native βCD. The AQ2CA and AQ2S drugs are ill-soluble and their solubilities increased as the result of complex formation with βCDLip and βCDGAL ligands. AQ2CA, AQ2S were negatively charged at pH 7.4 and therefore they were less prone to form inclusion complex with the hydrophobic CD cavity than at pH 3 (characteristic of gastric juices) when they were protonated. βCDTriazole and βCDGAL ligands were found to form weaker inclusion complexes with the positively charged drug DNR at acidic pH (pH 5.5) than in the neutral medium (pH 7.4) when the drug dissociates to the neutral, uncharged form. This pH dependence is favorable for anti-tumor applications.

Background: Rhein, an anthraquinone derivative, and gold nanoparticles have demonstrated significant potential in facilitating the theranostics of breast cancer. Rhein inhibits breast cancer by exhibiting a strong binding affinity to the estrogen receptor. In addition, gold nanoparticles, when used as nanocarriers, may enhance the therapeutic effects against breast cancer. This study out-lines the preparation of [124I]rhein-gold for position emission tomography (PET) imaging in a breast cancer mouse model. Method: Gold nanoparticles (30 nm) were prepared using the citrate reduction method. Second, the anthraquinone derivative rhein-cysteine complex was synthesized using the carbodiimide coupling method. Third, the radiosynthesis of [124I]rhein-Cys-gold nanocomposites (RCGs) was performed using the chloramine T method. Specifically, 1 mg of RCGs in dimethylformamide was mixed with Na124I (37 MBq) at pH 12 along with chloramine T (5 mg). The reaction was allowed to proceed for 15 min at room temperature. To remove free 124I, the mixture was purified via centrifugation for 10 min at 10,000 rpm. Results: The radiochemical yield of [124I]RCGs was 65% ± 8.2%, with a radiochemical purity of > 98%. In vivo [124I]RCGs targeted MCF-7 cells in a hormone-dependent manner, with cellular uptake values of 25.4 ± 1.59% at 15 min, 27.1 ± 1.27% at 30 min, 28.6 ± 0.38% at 60 min, and 15.97 ± 0.66% at 120 min. In vivo small-animal PET images of [124I]RCGs showed significant uptake in human breast cancer and MCF-7 tumors. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the synthesis and biological evaluation of [124I]RCGs. [124I]RCGs showed high cellular uptake in a time-dependent manner. PET images of [124I]RCGs confirmed their high affinity for MCF-7 tumors in mice from 1 h to 24 h. These results suggest that [124I]RCGs are promising radiopharmaceuticals, demonstrating potential both as an imaging agent and therapeutic option for estrogen-receptor-targeted breast cancer treatment.

Antimicrobial and anti-viral materials have attracted significant interest in recent years due to increasing occurrences of nosocomial infections and pathogenic microbial contamination. One method to address this is the combination of photoactive compounds that can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals to disinfect microbes, with carrier materials that meet the application requirements. Using anthraquinone (AQ) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the photoactive and carrier components respectively, this work demonstrates the first covalent incorporation of AQ onto CNCs. The morphology and the photoactive properties were investigated, revealing the structural integrity of the CNCs, and high degree of photoactivity of AQ-CNC materials upon UVA exposure. The AQ-CNCs also exhibited an unexpected persistent generation of ROS under darkness, which adds advantages for antimicrobial applications.

Different products from a unique Propolis extract, Propolis (bee glue), an of resinous consistency produced by bees, has been used as indigenous medicine for the treatment of several diseases in some contrary. Safety assessment of propoils extracts with respect to antimicrobial activity against three bacterial isolates, Proteus Mirabilis , Klebsiella Pneumonia and Staphylococcus Qureus.The result showed that the main composition of the extract was Anthraquinone, the last one was responsible for the biological activity of the extract. FT-IR, UV results showed more than eight peaks for represent the main fine composition of the extract. The present study also showed that the extract has antibacterial activity against three bacterial isolates

The design of more efficient photosensitizers is a matter of great importance in the field of cancer treatment by means of photodynamic therapy. One of the main processes involved in the activation of apoptosis in cancer cells is the oxidative stress on DNA once a photosensitizer is excited by light. As a consequence, it is a matter of great relevance to investigate in detail the binding modes of the chromophore with DNA, and the nature of the electronically excited states that participate in the induction of DNA damage, for example, charge-transfer states. In this work, we investigate the electronic structure of the anthraquinone photosensitizer intercalated into a double-stranded poly(dG-dC) decamer model of DNA. First, the different geometric configurations are analyzed by means of classical molecular dynamics simulations. Then, the excited states for the most relevant poses of anthraquinone inside the binding pocket are computed by an electrostatic-embedding quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach, where anthraquinone and one of the nearby guanine residues are described quantum mechanically to take into account intermolecular charge-transfer states. The excited states are characterized as monomer, exciton, excimer and charge-transfer states based on the analysis of the transition density matrix, and each of these contributions to the total density of states and absorption spectrum is discussed in terms of the stacking interactions. These results are relevant as they represent the footing for future studies on the reactivity of anthraquinone derivatives with DNA and give insights on possible geometrical configurations that potentially favor the oxidative stress of DNA.
