Abstract Issue Addressed: Men’s Sheds (‘Sheds’) have been identified as inherently health promoting and as potential settings to engage ‘hard-to-reach’ men in more structured health promotion initiatives. However, little is known about the sociodemographic or health and wellbeing characteristics of Shed members (‘Shedders’) on which such initiatives might be based. This study captures a baseline cross sectional analysis of Shedders (n=384) who participated in ‘Sheds for Life’, a health promotion initiative tailored to Sheds. Methods: Objective health measure, (body composition, blood pressure, blood lipids) captured via health screening as well as sociodemographic and health and wellbeing measures (physical activity, subjective wellbeing, mental health, social capital, cooking and diet) via questionnaires were assessed. Results: Participants were mostly over 65 years, retired with limited educational attainment. The majority were in the ‘at-risk’ categories for objective health measures, with most being referred to their GP following health screening. Older Shedders were also more likely to meet physical activity guidelines. Mental wellbeing was positively correlated with life satisfaction and increased social capital and these were also positively correlated with physical activity. Conclusions: Findings highlight the potential of Sheds in reaching a ‘hard-to-reach’ and ‘at-risk’ cohort of men. Despite a high prevalence of ‘at-risk’ objective health measures, participants report their health in positive terms. Future health promotion initiatives should capitalise on the inherent health promoting properties of Sheds. So what? Findings raise important implications for prioritising and designing health promotion initiatives in Shed settings.

This article examines the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health, with a particular focus on its potential to break down barriers for men facing mental health challenges. Historically, men have been less likely to seek help for mental health issues due to societal stigma, cultural expectations, and a reluctance to express vulnerability. AI technologies, including chatbots, generative AI, and machine learning algorithms, offer innovative solutions to address these challenges by providing accessible, anonymous, and personalized support. This paper explores how AI-powered mental health applications can create safe spaces for men to engage with their emotions, seek help, and access resources tailored to their specific needs. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of integrating AI into traditional mental health care models to enhance outreach and reduce stigma. By fostering a more inclusive approach to mental health support, AI has the potential to empower men, promote emotional resilience, and ultimately improve mental health outcomes in this underserved demographic.

The WHO is so passionate about good health for all meanwhile the emerging counselling discipline is a complimentary arm whose interest is to fully complement those efforts through helping humankind in issues that may be affecting the health and the overall well-being. The researcher has discovered through studies and general knowledge that men tend to delay in seeking health help compared to women. Men appear to be reluctant in seeking professional assistance in problems pertaining to their health, marriages, work place, infertility, sexual dysfunction and other social life ills subsequently leading to depression, suicides, excessive uptake of alcohol, violence, mental psychosis and physical disabilities or premature death. Studies have shown that men are socially constructed to be strong from a tender age and they grow into adulthood believing that they are strong both physical and emotional hence they are supposed to withstand any situation affecting them. Masking and faking have been regarded as sign of being a real man, however these social constructs, perceptions and expectations appear to be the root cause of problems manifesting daily in men’s behavior towards seeking health help. This study therefore endeavors to find out more about the factors or determinants influencing men’s reluctance to seeking help in areas concerning their health in Industrial site of Victoria Falls. The study serves as additional educational awareness guide for the significant other, while issues unraveled help in gender mainstreaming programs for gender equality when it comes to societal hegemonizing of men’s health. Moreover, the exploration of influencing factors or determinants, causes and effects of men’s reluctance in seeking health help were scrutinized as well as possible solutions. There has been much realization of more various literature on women’s issues than men because women in general have been known to open up and talk through their issues unlike men hence the aim is to focus on men in order to understand the attitude and perceptions underlying the reluctance to seek medical care regularly and promptly. When communities get to understand that men too, feel the pain both emotionally and physically, may be then, men would not fear stigmatization but come out to seek health help promptly and communities would realize that some cultural expectations placed on men result in more harm than good.

Objective: to analyze the relationships between sociodemographic variables, intolerance to uncertainty (INT), social support and psychological distress (i.e., indicators of Common Mental Disorders [CMDs] and perceived stress [PS]) in Brazilian men during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: a cross-sectional study with national coverage, of the web survey type, and conducted with 1,006 Brazilian men during the period of social circulation restriction imposed by the health authorities in Brazil, for suppression of the coronavirus and control of the pandemic. Structural equation modeling analysis was performed. Results: Statistically significant direct effects of race/skin color (λ=0.268; p-value<0.001), socioeconomic status (SES) (λ=0.306; p-value<0.001), household composition (λ=0.281; p-value<0.001), PS (λ=0.513; p-value<0.001) and INT (λ=0.421; p-value<0.001) were evidenced in the occurrence of CMDs. Black-skinned men, with higher SES, living alone and with higher PS and INT levels presented higher prevalence values of CMDs. Conclusions: high levels of PS and INT were the factors that presented the strongest associations with the occurrence of CMDs among the men. It is necessary to implement actions to reduce the stress-generating sources, as well as to promote an increase in resilience and the development of intrinsic reinforcements to deal with uncertain threats.
