Abstract
This study aims to investigate the role of supervisors in developing postgraduate literacies, focusing on research capabilities, critical thinking, and academic writing. It seeks to identify effective supervisory practices and the challenges supervisors face in fostering these literacies. Additionally, the research intends to explore the impact of supervisory feedback on the overall academic proficiency of postgraduate students. The research design employs the literature review method, offering a structured examination of existing knowledge and research findings. This encompasses academic articles, books, conference papers, and case studies. Critical practices include providing tailored, constructive feedback, fostering a supportive and collaborative research environment, and encouraging active participation in scholarly communities. However, supervisors often face challenges such as managing diverse student needs, balancing guidance with promoting student independence and maintaining consistent communication. The study emphasizes the importance of targeted training and resources for supervisors to address the identified challenges and enhance their supervisory practices. Recommendations include developing professional development programmes for supervisors, the creation of clear guidelines for supervisory practices, and implementing regular feedback mechanisms between supervisors and students. Institutions should also promote a culture of mentorship and support to facilitate the development of postgraduate literacies.

5. Conclusions

This paper has explored the pivotal role of supervisors in developing postgraduate literacies, mainly focusing on research capabilities, critical thinking, and academic writing. Through an extensive literature review, the study has identified effective supervisory practices and the challenges supervisors face in fostering these essential skills. The findings indicate that adequate supervision, characterized by tailored and constructive feedback, significantly enhances postgraduate literacies. Supervisors who create a supportive and collaborative research environment contribute to richer learning experiences and better student academic outcomes. However, supervisors encounter several challenges, including managing diverse student needs, balancing guidance with promoting independence, and maintaining consistent communication. The impact of supervisory feedback on postgraduate students' academic proficiency is profound. Comprehensive and personalized feedback improves students' technical skills and research capabilities and boosts their confidence and motivation to excel in their academic pursuits.
To address these challenges and enhance supervisory practices, the study recommends implementing professional development programs for supervisors, establishing clear guidelines for supervisory practices, and promoting a culture of mentorship within institutions. These initiatives can equip supervisors with advanced skills and strategies to support postgraduate students effectively, fostering an environment that prioritizes continuous learning and adaptation.
Overall, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of supervisors' critical role in postgraduate education. By highlighting effective practices and common challenges, the study provides actionable recommendations for improving supervisory practices, ultimately enhancing postgraduate students' academic experience and outcomes. The insights gained from this research can inform policy development and the creation of support structures within higher education institutions, contributing to the advancement of postgraduate education and research excellence.
