White and three types of black garlic (13, 32 and 45 days of fermentation, named 0C1, 1C2 and 2C1 respectively) were selected in order to check possible differences in their nutraceutic potential. For this purpose, garlic were physico-chemically characterised, and both in vivo and in vitro assays were carried out. Black garlic showed higher polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity than white garlic. The biological studies have shown that only white garlic was not safe showing toxicity effect. Furthermore, none garlic exert protective effects against H₂O₂, except the 0C1 black garlic. Moreover, garlic was non-genotoxic with the exception of the highest concentration of white garlic. On the other hand, 0C1 was the most antigenotoxic substance. The in vivo longevity assays yielded significant extension of lifespan results in some concentrations of white and 0C1and 1C2 black garlic. The in vitro experiments showed that all studied garlic induced a decrease in leukaemia cells growth. However, none type of garlic was able to induce proapoptotic internucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Taking into account the physicochemical and biological data, black garlic could be considered as a potential functional food and used in preventive treatment of age-related diseases. In addition, our findings could be relevant for the black garlic processing agrifood companies as the economical and timing costs are significantly reduced to 13 days aging.

Single umbilical artery (SUA) is considered an ultrasound marker of anomalies. Although it may be present in about 5% of normal gestations, it has been observed to be associated with an increased risk of intrauterine growth retardation, cardiac, genitourinary and gastrointestinal malformations, as well as with the appearance of chromosomal anomalies such as trisomy 21 and 18. Objectives: This study aims to check whether the presence of isolated SUA (ISUA) is related to adverse perinatal outcomes. Methods: This is a descriptive, observational and retrospective study with a total of 1266 gestations were studied (1189 normal gestations and deliveries collected from the registry of the Hospital Univeritario de Salamanca, during the period from January 1st to August 31st, 2023 and 77 cases of ISUA). Results: The presence of ISUA was associated with a lower gestational age (38 vs 39 weeks) and a lower birth weight (3013 vs 3181 g) though not increasing the prematurity rate. No significant differences were found in the increase in malformations, genetic disorders, Apgar test, pH at birth or admissions in the neonatal ICU. Conclusions: The presence of ISUA during gestation is associated with lower gestational age and lower birth weight though this did not result in a higher rate of prematurity or an increase in the number of admissions associated with low birth weight. No significant association was found between the presence of ISUA and genetic disorders or fetal malformations. Neither were worse Apgar test scores or lower pH values found in these newborns.

Carob pulp is a Mediterranean by-product highlighted as an important source of bioactive compounds potentially used in different industrial applications. This paper deals with the comparison of methods elaborated with combinations of conventional (maceration-M, organic solvents and water) and non-conventional green (ultrasound-assisted extraction -UAE, and natural deep eutectic solvents -NADES) extraction approaches and using chemometric tools for screening the polyphenol profile by HPLC-HRMS and bioactive potential measured by Folin-Ciocalteu, DPPH and ABTS assays of carob pulp from two Tunisian ubications (North and South). Regarding the factors studied (extraction technique and solvent, and geographical location), the solvent marked the higher variability found for the different families of compounds studied. The highest yield of total phenolics was achieved by the conventional method ethanol 75%-M (5023.92 µg/g) and the green approaches water-UAE (5008.32 µg/g), followed by the NADES lactic acid: sodium acetate (3:1) (3117.23 µg/g). The latter standing out for its contents in flavonols and hydrolizable tannins and antioxidant potential. The two Tunisian locations studied showed differentiation in the phenolic content depending on the extraction method. However, in general, higher contents were observed in extracts from the southern region. The chemometric evaluation confirm the suitability of the proposed green methods as excellent powerful tools for bioactive extraction from carob pulp, with similar, improved or highly selective phenolic recoveries compared to the conventional methods assessed.
