This paper presents an in-depth contextualized tutorial on Agricultural IoT (Agri-IoT), covering the fundamental concepts, assessment of routing architectures and protocols, and performance optimization techniques via systematic survey and synthesis of related literature. The negative impacts of climate change and the increasing global population on food security and unemployment threats have motivated the adoption of the wireless sensor network (WSN)-based Agri-IoT as an indispensable underlying technology in precision agriculture and greenhouses to improve food production capacities and quality. However, most related Agri-IoT testbed solutions have failed to achieve their performance expectations due to the lack of an in-depth and contextualized reference tutorial that provides a holistic overview of communication technologies, routing architectures, and performance optimization modalities based on users’ expectations. Thus, although IoT applications are founded on a common idea, each use case (e.g., Agri-IoT) varies based on specific performance and users expectations as well as its technological, architectural, and deployment requirements. Likewise, the agricultural setting is a unique and hostile area where conventional IoT technologies do not apply, hence the need for this tutorial. Consequently, this tutorial addresses these via the following contributions: (1) a systematic overview of the fundamental concepts, technologies, and architectural standards of WSN-based Agri-IoT, (2) an evaluation of the technical design requirements of a robust, location-independent, and affordable Agri-IoT, (3) a comprehensive survey of the benchmarking fault tolerance techniques, communication standards, routing and medium access control (MAC) protocols, and WSN-based Agri-IoT testbed solutions, and (4) an in-depth case study on how to design a self-healing, energy-efficient, affordable, adaptive, stable, autonomous, and cluster-based WSN-specific Agri-IoT from a proposed taxonomy of multi-objective optimization (MOO) metrics that can guarantee an optimized network performance. Furthermore, this tutorial established new taxonomies of faults, architectural layers, and MOO metrics for cluster-based Agri-IoT (CA-IoT) networks and a 3-tier objective framework with remedial measures for designing an efficient associated supervisory protocol for cluster-based Agri-IoT networks.

Thanks to advanced semiconductor microfabrication technology, chip-scale integration and miniaturization of lab-on-a-chip components, silicon-based optical biosensors have made significant progress for the purpose of point-of-care diagnosis. In this review, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in evanescent field biosensing technologies including interferometer, microcavity, photonic crystal, and Bragg grating waveguide-based sensors. Their sensing mechanisms and sensor performances, as well as real biomarkers for label-free detection, are exhibited and compared. We also review the development of chip-level integration for lab-on-a-chip photonic sensing platforms, which consist of the optical sensing device, flow delivery system, optical input and readout equipment. At last, some advanced system-level CMOS-chip packaging examples are presented, indicating the commercialization potential for the low cost, high yield, portable biosensing platform leveraging CMOS processes.

Gyroscopes are fascinating instruments with a history of about 200 years. When J.G.F. Bohnenberger presented his machine to his students in 1810 at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, nobody could have foreseen that this fascinating development would be used for complex orientation and positioning. At the University of Stuttgart, Germany, a collection of 160 exhibits is available and in transition for a sustainable future. Here, the systems are digitized in 2D, 2.5D and 3D and are made available for a world-wide community using OpenAccess platforms. The technologies being used are Computed Tomography, Computer Vision, Endoscopy and Photogrammetry. The workflows for combining voxel representations and colored point clouds are described, to create Digital Twins of the tangible assets. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed und work for near future is outlined in this new and challenging field of Tech Heritage digitization.

A plenty of theories on the origin of genetic codes have been proposed so far, yet all ignored the energetic driving force, its relation to the biochemical system, and most importantly, the missing “matchmaker” between proteins and nucleic acids. Here, a new hypothesis is proposed, according to which ATP is at the origin of the primordial genetic code by driving the coevolution of the genetic code with the pristine biochemical system. This hypothesis aims to show how the genetic code was produced e.g. by photochemical reactions in a protocell that derived from a lipid vesicle enclosing various life’s building blocks (e.g. nucleotides and peptides). At extant cell, ATP is the only energetic product of photosynthesis, and is at the energetic heart of the biochemical systems. ATP could energetically form and elongate chains of both polynucleotides and polypeptides, thus acting a “matchmaker” between these two bio-polymers and eventually mediating precellular biochemical innovation from energy transformation to informatization. ATP was not the only one that could drive the formation of polynucleotides and polypeptides, but favored by precellular selection. The protocell innovated a photosynthesis system to produce ATP efficiently and regularly with the aids of proteins and RNA/DNA. The completion of permanently recording the genetic information by DNA marked the dawn of cellular life operated by Darwinian evolution. The ATP hypothesis assumes or supports the photochemical origin of life, shedding light on the origins of both photosynthetic and biochemical systems, which remains largely unknown thus far. Based on ATP hypothesis, virus (like the new coronavirus) could not be the earliest life on Earth, as it has neither biochemical systems nor lipid bilayer membrane that provided relatively isolated environment for the development of protobiochemical reactions, although it owns the genetic code of a cellular life. Virus could not be a bridge between life and non-life, but is an anti-life substance, as it depletes cellular material for its own replication, and then spreads by destroying the host cells. It can be imagined that if cellular life are completely wiped out by the virus, the complete destruction of life on Earth would be inevitable.

A Wireless Body Area Sensor Network (WBASN) is combination of numerous sense nodes, positioned onto/close or inside a person body. Wireless Body Area Sensor Networks (WBASN) is a developing automation trend that exploits wireless sensor nodes to put instantaneous wearable well-being of ill person to improve individual’s existence. The sensor nodes might be used outwardly to observe abundant health parameters (like heart activity, blood pressure and cholesterol) of an ill person at a vital site within hospital. Hence the goal of WBASN is much crucial, enhancing the lifetime of nodes is compulsory to sustain many issues such as utility and efficiency. It is essential to evaluate time that when the first node will die it we want to refresh or change the battery reason is that loss of crucial information is not tolerable. The lifetime is termed as the time interval when a first node dies out due to battery exhaustion. In our proposed protocol life time of a network is the main concern as well other protocol related issues such as throughput, path loss, and residual energy. Bio-sensors are used for deployment on human body. Poisson distribution and equilibrium model techniques have been used for attaining the required results. Multi-hop network topology and random network node deployment used to achieve minimum energy consumption and longer network lifetime.

The human ankle is a complex joint, most commonly represented as talocrural and subtalar axes. It is difficult to locate and take in vivo measurements of the ankle joint. There are no instruments for patients lying on a bed or the floor; that can be used in outdoor or remote sites. We have developed a "Turmell-meter" to address these issues. We started with the study of ankle anatomy and anthropometry, then we used the product of exponentials’ formula to visualize the movements. Furthermore, we built a prototype using human proportions and statistics. For pose estimation, we used a trilateration method by applying tetrahedral geometry. Additionally, we computed the axis direction by fitting 3D circles, plotting the manifold and chart as an ankle joint model. We presented the results of simulations, a prototype comprising 45 parts, specifically designed draw-wire sensors, and electronics. Finally, we tested the device by capturing positions and fitting them into the bi-axial ankle model as a Riemannian manifold. The Turmell-meter is intended to be a hardware platform for human ankle joint axis estimation, it is adjustable and has an easy setup. Short-range Internet of Things (IoT) sensor nodes operating at 2.4 GHz need to provide ubiquitous wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with energy-efficient, wide-range output power (POUT) and fully integrated on a single chip for wireless body area networks (WBANs) and wireless personal area networks (WPANs) using low-power Bluetooth (BLE) and Zigbee standards. The proposed fully integrated transmitter (TX) utilizes a digitally controllable current-mode class-D (CMCD) power amplifier (PA) with a second harmonic distortion (HD2) suppression to reduce VCO pulling in an integrated system while meeting harmonic limit regulations. The CMCD PA is divided into 7-bit slices that can be reconfigured between differential and single-ended topologies. Duty cycle distortion compensation is performed for HD2 suppression, and an HD2 rejection filter and a modified C-L-C low-pass filter (LPF) reduce HD2 further. Implemented in a 28 nm CMOS process, the TX achieves a wide POUT range of from 12.1 to -31 dBm and provides a maximum efficiency of 39.8% while consuming 41.1 mW at 12.1 dBm POUT. The calibrated HD2 level is -82.2 dBc at 9.93 dBm POUT, resulting in a transmitter figure of merit (TX_FoM) of -97.52 dB. Higher order harmonic levels remain below -41.2 dBm even at 12.1 dBm POUT, meeting regulatory requirements.

Monitoring seaweed growth rates and biomass is crucial for optimizing harvest strategies in aquaculture systems. While such a task can be performed manually on a small farm, such as the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University (HBOI), a commercial farm will have to rely on the automated sensor to perform such a task. This study introduces an advanced LSTM-based approach for forecasting seaweed growth and biomass. Utilizing a combination of real and synthetic data, LSTM models are trained and evaluated for their predictive performance. Synthetic sensor data was generated using mathematical equations that simulate realistic aquaculture conditions, with added noise to reflect sensor variability. Building on the foundation of the Pseudorandom Encoded Light for Evaluating Biomass (PEEB) sensor deployed at the seaweed tank in the HBOI IMTA system, we refine the process of biomass estimation by introducing non-linear regression models for predicting seaweed growth and biomass. The results showed that the LSTM model trained with a loss function under physics constraint, combining MSE and physical laws, outperformed models trained with MSE alone, achieving a significantly lower error in predicting seaweed growth. The variation trend of the predicted biomass from the network matched well with the sensor measurement after moving average preprocessing, demonstrating the robustness of the proposed technique in handling noisy sensor data. This study highlights the potential of integrating machine learning with physical models to optimize seaweed cultivation and support sustainable aquaculture practices.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is critical for ensuring the safety of infrastructures like bridges. This article presents a digital twin solution for SHM of railway bridges using low-cost wireless accelerometers and Machine Learning (ML). The system architecture combines edge on-premises computing and cloud analytics to enable efficient real-time monitoring and complete storage of relevant time-history datasets. After train crossings, accelerometers stream raw vibration data, which is processed in the frequency domain and analyzed via machine learning to detect anomalies indicating potential structural issues. The digital twin approach is demonstrated on an in-service railway bridge, where vibration data was collected over two years under normal operating conditions. By learning allowable ranges for vibration patterns, the digital twin model identifies abnormal spectral peaks, suggesting changes in structural integrity. The long-term pilot proves that this affordable SHM system can provide automated and real-time warning of bridge damage and also supports the use of in-house designed sensors of lower-cost and edge computing capabilities than those used in the demonstration. The successful on-premises-cloud hybrid implementation provides a cost effective and scalable model for expanding monitoring to thousands of railway bridges, democratizing SHM to improve safety by avoiding catastrophic failures.

This comprehensive study provides an in-depth examination of the ‘Internet of’ technologies, focusing specifically on the Internet of Things (IoT), which is defined as the networked interconnection of multiple devices through various wireless protocols that facilitate data transfer and improve operational intelligence. The applications of IoT are widespread, including urban infrastructure, domestic settings, transportation systems, military operations, and agricultural practices. The study elucidates the complexities of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), systematically categorizing the vulnerabilities inherent in hardware, software, cloud, network, and sensor networks, and underscores the omnipresent security risks in networks and IoT devices, highlighting the need for robust mitigation strategies. The proposed trajectory of this study is the development of a comprehensive AI architecture that can discern and counteract a wide spectrum of vulnerabilities. This AI system, embedded in a Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano that is attached to IoT devices, will be supported by infrastructure hosted within a cloud environment, will continuously monitor the IoT device for anomalies, conduct self-initiated penetration tests to pinpoint weaknesses, and implement appropriate countermeasures to mitigate the identified vulnerabilities. The study also advocates the need for the exploration of postquantum cryptographic solutions in further research in this field to safeguard data on IoT devices, a proactive approach that is crucial in light of the potential vulnerability of contemporary cryptography to quantum computing breakthroughs.

This work is a physical review, with elements of additions and thinning, on the methods of theoretical studies of nonlinear electrophysical phenomena in crystals with ion-molecular chemical bonds (CIMB). Crystals of this class include ionic dielectrics (characterized by high ionic conductivity), layered crystals, a special case of which are hydrogen-bonded crystals (HBC), defined as proton semiconductors and dielectrics (PSD).A scientific review (comparative analysis and justification of various approximations) was carried out on the methods of constructing and solving a generalized quasi-classical kinetic equation describing the mechanism of nonlinear relaxation polarization and conductivity processes in dielectric materials with ion-molecular chemical bonds (a special case is hydrogen-bonded crystals (HBC)) in a wide temperature range (1-1550 K) and polarizing field strengths (0.1-1000 V/m) at alternating field frequencies of the order of 1 kHz - 1000 MHz. The most important variant of the equations of the kinetic theory of dielectric relaxation in this work is the generalized non-linear by polarizing field quasi-classical kinetic equation of ionic (in HBC, proton) relaxation, based on the particle number balance equation (conductivity ions) in potential wells and having (in these models) the meaning of the ion current continuity equation (in HBC, protons), solved by the method of successive approximations by decomposition into infinite power series by degrees of a small dimensionless comparison parameter. It was found that in the area of ​ ​ weak fields (0.1-1 MW/m) at temperatures T = 50 - 550 K, for a number of ionic dielectrics (including HBC and similar dielectric properties and lattice structure) the generalized quasi-classical kinetic equation transforms to the linearized Fokker – Planck equation and, in the region of low (50-100K) and higher temperatures (250-550 K) begin to manifest non-linear polarization effects due to respectively proton tunneling (in the case of HBC) and volume charge relaxation (in the case of the HBC and for a wider class of ionic dielectrics). At ultra-low (1-10 K) temperatures in the region of weak fields (0.1-1 MW/m) and ultra-high temperatures (550-1550 K) in the region of strong fields (10-1000 MW/m), the contribution of this kind of effects to polarization is significantly enhanced. The effect of nonlinearities on relaxation times for microscopic acts of proton transitions across a potential barrier (assumed to be parabolic) is investigated. Nonlinear effects at volume-charge polarization in the hydrogen-bonded crystals (HBC) in alternating electric field, in radio frequency range are investigated. From the solution of the system of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations (macroscopic kinetic equation) and Poisson, with blocking electrodes, using Fourier series, a recurrent (convenient for use in any approximation of perturbation theory) expression is constructed for complex amplitudes of relaxation modes of volumetric charge. Complex dielectric permittivity (CDP) is calculated as a series decomposition over even frequency harmonics of a variable field. The effect of quantum proton transitions and polarizing field parameters (strength, frequency) on the nonlinear properties of proton semiconductors and dielectrics has been established.
