Type I (IFN-α/β) and Type III (IFN-λ) interferon-inducible myxovirus resistance (Mx) proteins have long been recognized to inhibit a broad spectrum of RNA- and DNA-containing viruses (1-5). Mx proteins are dynamin-family GTPases of size 60-70 kDa (1-3) with different subcellular localization and antiviral activities. In the last 5 years there has been a paradigm shift in our understanding of the structures formed by human and murine Mx proteins in the cytoplasm and nucleus. We now recognize that the major human MxA protein forms structures in the cytoplasm and the major murine Mx1 forms structure in the nucleus which comprise liquid-liquid phase separated (LLPS) biomolecular condensates [membraneless organelles (MLOs)] with a gel-like internal consistency. The second human Mx protein, MxB, which had been previously observed to associate with the cytoplasmic face of nuclear pores, was also recently confirmed to represent cytoplasmic biomolecular condensates. Our overall focus now is to understand the formation, dynamics and antiviral function of biomolecular condensates of different Mx proteins in the cytoplasm and nucleus in cells of different species. We highlight the metastability and rapidly reversible hypotonicity sensing properties of MxA condensates in human cells, especially as applicable to environmental stress inflicted on the oral mucosa.

The dispersive and polar properties of materials, and especially of polymers and copolymers play an important role in several engineering applications implying their surfaces and interfaces. The surface energetic properties of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) have never been studied. We proposed in this study an accurate determination of such properties by using the inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at infinite dilution. Background: The IGC surface technique led to the dispersive and polar properties of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) rubber (SBR) by adsorption of organic solvents at various temperatures. Methods: Our new methodology based on the thermal Hamieh model and the London dispersion interaction energy was used to determine the London dispersion surface energy, the polar acid-base surface energy, and the Lewis acid-base properties of the copolymer. Results: The different surface energy parameters of the SBR were obtained as a function of temperature from the chromatographic measurements. Conclusions: The dispersive and polar free energies of adsorption of the various n-alkanes and polar molecules on poly(styrene-co-butadiene) were determined at different temperatures. A decrease of the London dispersive surface energy and the polar Lewis acid-base surface energies of SBR was highlighted when the temperature increased. It was showed a Lewis amphoteric character of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) with a highest basic constant 10 times larger than its acidic constant.

The oral mucosa represents a defense between the external environment and the rest of the body and encompasses several antimicrobial and antiviral mechanisms. Oral mucosal cells are constantly bathed in hypotonic saliva (normally one-third tonicity compared to plasma) and are repeatedly exposed to environmental stresses of tonicity, temperature and pH by the drinks we imbibe (e.g. hypotonic: water, tea, coffee; hypertonic: assorted fruit juices, red wines), as well as of diverse microbial and viral flora. In the mouth, the broad-spectrum antiviral mediator MxA (a dynamin-family large GTPase) is constitutively expressed in healthy periodontal tissues, and also induced by Type III interferons (e.g. IFN-λ1). Endogenously induced human MxA and exogenously expressed human GFP-MxA formed membraneless biomolecular condensates in the cytoplasm of oral carcinoma cells (OECM1 cell line). These condensates likely represent storage granules in equilibrium with antivirally active dispersed MxA. Remarkably, cytoplasmic MxA condensates were exquisitely sensitive sensors of hypotonicity – the condensates in oral epithelium disassembled within 1-2 min of exposure of cells to saliva-like one-third hypotonicity, and spontaneously reassembled in the next 4-7 min. OECM1 cells preloaded with calcein-AM (a reporter of cytosolic “macromolecular crowding”) confirmed unquenching and then requenching of calcein fluorescence during this process. Hypertonicity had little effect on MxA condensates. The spontaneous reassembly of GFP-MxA condensates in oral epithelial cells even under continuous saliva-like hypotonicity was slowed by the protein phosphatase inhibitor cyclosporin A (CsA) and by the K-channel blocker tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) suggestive of the involvement of the volume-sensitive WNK kinase-protein phosphatase (PTP)-K-Cl cotransporter (KCC) pathway in the regulated volume decrease (RVD) during condensate reassembly in oral cells. Thus, physiologically, hypotonic drinks (water, tea, coffee) trigger a rapid deployment of antiviral MxA throughout the cytoplasm of oral epithelial cells, with subsequent salvage of MxA back into storage granules/condensates.

Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are ubiquitous technologies in modern water treatment, finding applications across various sectors. However, the availability of high-quality water suitable for RO/NF feed is diminishing due to droughts caused by global warming, increasing demand, and water pollution. As concerns grow over the depletion of precious freshwater resources, a global movement is gaining momentum to utilize previously overlooked or challenging water sources, collectively known as “marginal water.” Fouling is a serious concern when treating marginal water. In RO/NF, biofouling, organic and colloidal fouling, and scaling are particularly problematic. Of these, organic fouling, along with biofouling, has been considered difficult to manage. The major organic foulants studied are natural organic matter (NOM) for surface water and groundwater and effluent organic matter (EfOM) for municipal wastewater reuse. Polymeric substances such as sodium alginate, humic acid, and proteins have been used as model substances of EfOM. Fouling by low molecular weight organic compounds (LMWOCs) such as surfactants, phenolics, and plasticizers is known, but there have been few comprehensive reports. This review aims to shed light on fouling behavior by LMWOCs and its mechanism. LMWOC foulants reported so far are summarized, and the role of LMWOCs is also outlined for other polymeric membranes, e.g., UF, gas separation membranes, etc. Regarding the mechanism of fouling, it is explained that the fouling is caused by the strong interaction between LMWOC and the membrane, which causes the water permeation to be hindered by LMWOCs adsorbed on the membrane surface (surface fouling) and sorbed inside the membrane pores (internal fouling). Adsorption amounts and flow loss caused by the LMWOC fouling were well correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient (log P). In part 2, countermeasures to solve this problem and applications using the LMWOCs will be outlined.

The paper briefly reviews the Clifford algebras of space Cl(3,0) and anti-space Cl(0,3) with a particular focus on the paravector representation, emphasizing the fact that both algebras have an isomorphic center represented just by two coordinates. Since the paravector representation allows assigning the scalar element of grade 0 to the time coordinate, we consider the relativity in such two-dimensional spacetime for a uniformly accelerated frame with the constant acceleration 3Hc. Using the Rindler coordinate transformations in two-dimensional spacetime and then applying it to Minkowski coordinates, we obtain the FLRW metric, which in the case of the Clifford algebra of space Cl(3,0) corresponds to the anti-de Sitter (AdS) flat (k=0) case, the negative cosmological term and an oscillating model of the universe. The approach with anti-Euclidean Clifford algebra Cl(0,3) leads to the de Sitter model with the positive cosmological term and the exact form of the scale factor used in modern cosmology.

Three-dimensional quantized space model is newly introduced. Quantum mechanics and relativity theory are explained in terms of the warped three-dimensional quantized spaces with the quantum time width (Dt=t_q). The energy is newly defined as the 4-dimensional space-time volume of E = cDtDV in the present work. It is shown that the wave function of the quantum mechanics is closely related to the warped quantized space shape with the space time-volume. The quantum entanglement and quantum wave function collapse are explained additionally. The special relativity theory is separated into the energy transition associated with the space-time shape transition of the matter and the momentum transition associated with the space-time location transition. Then, the quantum mechanics and the general relativity theory are about the 4-dimensional space-time volume and the 4-dimensional space-time distance, respectively.

Electrically conductive adhesives (ECA’s) are used widely to replace or reinforce lead soldering or conductive metal components in electronic packaging applications such as die attachment, solderless interconnections, component repair, display interconnections, and heat dissipation. Their conductive behavior as well as the associated behaviors such as heat conduction and mechanical behavior (strength, rigidity, deformation and viscoelastic behavior, which may be affected by moisture ingression) are affected by adhesive film thickness, volume fraction, size and shape of the conductive filler, as well as uncured base adhesive viscosity, substrate and filler surface treatment and the applied pressure (during bonding and during conduction). The adhesive resistivity decreases precipitously above a characteristic filler volume fraction called the percolation threshold. In general, micron-sized metal fillers mixed in an adhesive (often an epoxy) resulting with different film thicknesses exhibit thickness thresholds for transition from three-dimensional conductivity to two-dimensional conductivity with considerable increases in thickness-direction (z-axis) resistivity when the film thicknesses are smaller than these threshold values. Recently, the use of conductive nanoparticles allowed decreases in percolation threshold levels as well as increases in mechanical strength and durability of ECA’s. Most ECA’s are supplied in liquid or paste form in varying viscosities and therefore, the method of their application also affects their performance. This work intends to provide an understanding of these effects on conduction behavior in (usually high-priced) equipment in which they are used.

This work is a physical review, with elements of additions and thinning, on the methods of theoretical studies of nonlinear electrophysical phenomena in crystals with ion-molecular chemical bonds (CIMB). Crystals of this class include ionic dielectrics (characterized by high ionic conductivity), layered crystals, a special case of which are hydrogen-bonded crystals (HBC), defined as proton semiconductors and dielectrics (PSD).A scientific review (comparative analysis and justification of various approximations) was carried out on the methods of constructing and solving a generalized quasi-classical kinetic equation describing the mechanism of nonlinear relaxation polarization and conductivity processes in dielectric materials with ion-molecular chemical bonds (a special case is hydrogen-bonded crystals (HBC)) in a wide temperature range (1-1550 K) and polarizing field strengths (0.1-1000 V/m) at alternating field frequencies of the order of 1 kHz - 1000 MHz. The most important variant of the equations of the kinetic theory of dielectric relaxation in this work is the generalized non-linear by polarizing field quasi-classical kinetic equation of ionic (in HBC, proton) relaxation, based on the particle number balance equation (conductivity ions) in potential wells and having (in these models) the meaning of the ion current continuity equation (in HBC, protons), solved by the method of successive approximations by decomposition into infinite power series by degrees of a small dimensionless comparison parameter. It was found that in the area of ​ ​ weak fields (0.1-1 MW/m) at temperatures T = 50 - 550 K, for a number of ionic dielectrics (including HBC and similar dielectric properties and lattice structure) the generalized quasi-classical kinetic equation transforms to the linearized Fokker – Planck equation and, in the region of low (50-100K) and higher temperatures (250-550 K) begin to manifest non-linear polarization effects due to respectively proton tunneling (in the case of HBC) and volume charge relaxation (in the case of the HBC and for a wider class of ionic dielectrics). At ultra-low (1-10 K) temperatures in the region of weak fields (0.1-1 MW/m) and ultra-high temperatures (550-1550 K) in the region of strong fields (10-1000 MW/m), the contribution of this kind of effects to polarization is significantly enhanced. The effect of nonlinearities on relaxation times for microscopic acts of proton transitions across a potential barrier (assumed to be parabolic) is investigated. Nonlinear effects at volume-charge polarization in the hydrogen-bonded crystals (HBC) in alternating electric field, in radio frequency range are investigated. From the solution of the system of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations (macroscopic kinetic equation) and Poisson, with blocking electrodes, using Fourier series, a recurrent (convenient for use in any approximation of perturbation theory) expression is constructed for complex amplitudes of relaxation modes of volumetric charge. Complex dielectric permittivity (CDP) is calculated as a series decomposition over even frequency harmonics of a variable field. The effect of quantum proton transitions and polarizing field parameters (strength, frequency) on the nonlinear properties of proton semiconductors and dielectrics has been established.
