The computer program "Histropy" is an interactive Python program for the quantification of selected features of two-dimensional (2D) images/patterns (in either JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or baseline TIF/TIFF formats) by means of calculations based on the pixel intensities in this data, their histograms, and user-selected sections of those histograms. The histograms of these images display pixel-intensity values along the x-axis (of a 2D Cartesian plot), with the frequency of each intensity value within the image represented along the y-axis. The images need to be of 8-bit or 16-bit information depth and can be of arbitrary size. (Up to 1024 pixels maximum on both sides is recommended as larger images tend to significantly slow the program’s performance). Histropy generates an image’s histogram surrounded by a graphical user interface that allows one to select any range of image-pixel intensity levels, i.e. sections along the histograms’ x-axis, using either the computer mouse or numerical text entries. The program subsequently calculates the (so-called Monkey Model) Shannon entropy and root-mean-square contrast for the selected section and displays them as part of what we call a "histogram-workspace-plot." To support the visual identification of small peaks in the histograms, the user can switch between a linear and log-base-10 display scale for the y-axis of the histograms. Pixel intensity data from different images can be overlaid onto the same histogram-workspace-plot for visual comparisons. The visual outputs of the program can be saved as histogram-workspace-plots in the PNG format for future usage. The source code of the program and a brief user manual are published in the supporting materials as well as on GitHub . Instead of taking only 2D images as inputs, the program’s functionality could be extended by a few lines of code to other potential uses employing data tables with one or two dimensions in the CSV format.

Germanium films were grown on c-plane sapphire with a 10 nm AlAs buffer layer using molecular beam epitaxy. The effects of Ge film thickness on the surface morphology and crystal structure were investigated by ex-situ characterization techniques. The nucleation of Ge proceeds by forming (111) oriented three-dimensional islands with two rotational twin domains about the growth axis. The boundaries between the twin grains are the origin of 0.2% strain and tilt grains. The transition to a single-grain orientation reduces the strain and results in a better-quality Ge buffer. Understanding the role of thickness on material quality during the Ge(111)/Al2O3(0001) epitaxy is vital for achieving device quality when using group IV material on the sapphire platform.

Kinship verification using facial images has become an important area of research within computer vision. This paper presents a robust kinship verification system that leverages Histograms of a Two-Dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (Hist-2D-DWT) to improve recognition accuracy. The system extracts planar features by decomposing images into four coefficients—approximation, horizontal, vertical, and diagonal—via discrete wavelet transform. Comprehensive experiments conducted on the TSKinFace and Cornell KinFace datasets validate the method’s effectiveness, achieving accuracies of 93.46% and 89.61%, respectively.

Because Canadian Nitrogen (N) fertilizer use has more than doubled since 1990 (1.2 to 2.9 MtN by 2021), a better understanding of this trend is needed. A comprehensive set of Recommended N Rates (RNR) that agreed with fertilizer sales data from 1996 and 2001 was compared with the Fertilizer Use Survey (FUS). The FUS was conducted from 2014 to 2021, with 2017 being the most representative year for these data. Using non-parametric statistics, confidence intervals were derived from the histograms used to present the FUS data. N application rates from the RNR for Canola, Spring and Duram wheat, and Oats in the west were all below their respective FUS confidence intervals, whereas N application rates for Grain corn showed almost no difference in N use between the RNR and FUS. Crop-specific N application rates interpolated from the RNR and FUS were integrated over their respective crop areas and plotted against national fertilizer sales records from 1990 to 2021. The rapid increase in N use between 2001 and 2017 (0.89 MtN), 90% of it (0.80 MtN) in Western Canada, was primarily due to increased application rates per crop, rather than crop area changes. The FUS-RNR interpolations were a good approximation of N sales records and could improve farm GHG emissions modelling. The economically important crops in Western Canada should be the main focus for N-related GHG reduction measures, but production losses need to be avoided.
