Solvent free copolymerization of epoxides derived from fatty acid esters of waste cooking oil with phthalic anhydride using (salen)CrIII Cl as catalyst and n-Bu4NCl/DMAP as co-catalyst was carried out for the first time under microwave irradiation, where reaction time was reduced from number of hours to minutes. The polyesters were obtained with molecular weight (Mw = 3084-6740 g/mol) and dispersity values (D = 1.18-1.92), when (salen)CrIII Cl/n-Bu4NCl was used as catalysts. While in case of DMAP as a co-catalyst, polyesters with improved molecular weight (Mw = 5537-6925 g/mol) and narrow dispersity values (D = 1.07-1.28) were obtained even at reduced concentrations of (salen)CrIII Cl and DMAP. The obtained products were characterized and evaluated by attenuated total reflection-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) Techniques.

Along with the rapid development of the trend in the health sector, various studies have been conducted to find alternative healthier foods, one of which is reducing fat consumption. Currently, many researchers focus on one of modified starches that can be utilized as a fat replacer is starch modified with OSA (octenyl succinic anhydride). In the last decade, there have been quite a lot of publications related to OSA starch, further the number is still increasing. This review discusses the synthesis method of OSA starch and its optimization, functional characteristics, and its application to be a fat replacer in many kinds of products daily consumed. Various pre-treatment methods could be applied to create OSA starch which has higher degree of substitution values. The presence of conjugate bonds with the OSA group in starch polymers could produce very amphiphilic starch characteristic so as to have an emulsifying function. Emulsions shaped from OSA starch were utilized as fat replacers in foods with high level of fat content. Partial OSA starch substitution was successfully utilized as a fat replacer for several types of food products with similar sensory attributes or even slightly better than the native product. The resulting product could be defined as a healthier choice because it had relatively lower fat and calorie content. Even so, adjustments through further study are still needed so that the food produced is able to have a higher level of sensory acceptance relative to native food without fat substitution.

The title compound, trans-11-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,3,8,9-tetramethoxy-6-oxo-11,12-dihydro-6H-dibenzo[c,h]chromene-12-carboxylic acid (4), was synthesized for the first time via a two-step protocol from 3,4-dimethoxyhomophthalic anhydride (1) and 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (DMBA). In the first step, 1 reacts with DMBA to give trans-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-1-oxo-3,4-dihydro-1H-2-benzopyran-4-carboxylic acid (2), which further reacts with additional two equivalents of 1 to give 4. Compound 4 was characterized by means of spectral methods - 1H-, 13C-, DEPT-135-NMR, and HRMS.

Various optically active 2-hydroxyamide derivatives are produced based on the kinetic resolution of racemic 2-hydroxyamides with a diphenylacetyl component and (R)-benzotetramisole [(R)-BTM], a chiral acyl-transfer catalyst, via asymmetric esterification and acylation. It was revealed that a tertiary amide can be used with this novel protocol to achieve high selectivity [22 examples; s-value reaching over 250]. The resulting chiral compounds could be transformed into other useful structures while maintaining their chirality.

Background: Despite the existence of a wide variety of anti-inflammatory drugs, the vast majority are classified as steroidal or non-steroidal. Both classes with many side effects that limit usage. Thus, the search for new molecules with anti-inflammatory potential is still important. Methods: Five phenylbenzohydrazides were synthetized and evaluated in pre-clinical models of acute inflammation in vivo and in vitro. Results: Substances significantly reduced cell migration induced by carrageenan. It was also observed an intense inhibition in protein extravasation and cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) production as well as nitric oxide reduction. INL-11 demonstrated to be the most potent since the reduction was significant even when compared with dexamethasone. In vitro INLs also reduced cytokines and NO production and iNOS activity. INL-11 was the most effective in reducing cell migration in vitro. Conclusions: our data suggest that these substances are suitable for further development to new series of compounds that could lead to new hits and future drug prototypes for anti-inflammatory conditions.

Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride (ASA) is a sizing agent used in papermaking to increase the water repellency of paper. Almost 60 years after the introduction of the chemical in papermaking, scientists still have differing views on how ASA interacts with cellulose. Several experiments were conducted to bring more clarity to the ASA sizing mechanism, especially on the contentious question of ASA-cellulose covalent bonding or the esterification reaction between ASA and cellulose during papermaking. Herein, research papers and patents, including experiments and results, from the1960’s to 2020 were reviewed. Our investigation revealed that the ester bond formation between ASA and cellulose is insignificant and is not a prerequisite for sizing effectiveness; the main ASA related material found in sized paper is hydrolyzed ASA or both hydrolyzed ASA and ASA salt. In addition, ASA emulsion stability and ASA emulsion retention are important for sizing efficiency improvement.

Synthesis of a novel series of chromen-3-yl-pyridine moieties. IR, NMR, and MS spectroscopy were used to confirm the structure of these novel compounds and study of antitumor activity of these compounds. The structure activity relationship investigation demonstrated that 2,4-diamino-5-(3-methoxyphenyl)-7-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carbonitrile (16), was more effective and naphthyridine-3-carbonitrile derivatives 17, 18 and pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivative 12, while compounds 5a,b, 9c, 11, 13 and 14 were moderate activity for antitumor activities.

Three kinds of hydrophobic groups grafted starches of maleic anhydride grafted starch (MAH-g-starch), lactic acid grafted starch (LA-g-starch), and methyl acrylate grafted starch (MA-g-starch) were prepared by in-situ solid phase polymerization. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were confirmed successful grafting. The grafting ratios of MAH-g-starch, LA-g-starch and MA-g-starch were 6.50%, 12.45%, and 0.57%, respectively. Influenced by the grafting ratio, LA-g-starch had the best hydrophobic properties and the largest molecular weight, and those for MA-g-starch was the worst. The surfaces of grafted starches were covered with graft polymer, with obvious surface roughness and bond degree of MAH-g-starch and LA-g-starch. The crystalline structure of grafted starches showed some damage, with LA-g-starch exhibiting the greatest decrease in crystallinity, and less of a change for MA-g-starch. Overall, the grafting reaction improved thermoplasticity, with LA-g-starch the most improved, followed by MAH-g-starch, and then MA-g-starch.

The effects of the ferrocenyl moiety to enhance the nucleophilicity of the carbonyl group, situated at its adjacent position, have been explored in a series of α-ferrocenyl ketocarboxylic acids. In the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride, 3-ferrocenoylpropionic acid and 4-ferrocenoylbutyric acid gave 5-ferrocenyl-4-trifluoroacetyl-2(3H)-furanone and 6-ferrocenyl-5-trifluoroacetyl-3,4-dihydropyran-2-one, respectively. Under similar reaction conditions, 2-ferrocenylcarbonylbenzoic acid, a keto carboxylic acid without a β-hydrogen, gave a dimerized lactone, 3,3’-diferrocenyl-3,3’-diphthalide possibly due to radical coupling. The nucleophilic attack of carbonyl oxygen, activated by the ferrocenyl moiety, to the carboxylic carbon, is assumed to be the crucial mechanistic step in forming these lactones. When the carbonyl group was reduced to an alcohol to break its conjugation with the ferrocenyl moiety, saturated lactones were isolated after the acidic workup. These results indicate that the α-ferrocenyl carbinols readily undergo solvolysis under acidic conditions, giving ferrocenylcarbenium ions, which are attacked by the carboxy oxygen to give lactones.

A typical halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) formulation for electric cables may contain polymers, various additives, and fire-retardant fillers. In this study, composites are prepared by mixing natural magnesium hydroxide (n-MDH) with linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and a few types of ethylene-octene copolymers (C₈-POE). Depending on the content of LLDPE and C₈-POE, we obtained composites with different crystallinity that affected the final mechanical properties. The nucleation effect of the n-MDH and the variations in crystallinity caused by the blending of C₈-POE/LLDPE/n-MDH were investigated. In the C₈-POE/LLDPE blend, we found a decrease in the crystallization temperature of LLPDE compared to pure LLDPE and an increase in the crystallization temperature of C₈-POE compared to pure C₈-POE. On the contrary, the addition of n-MDH led to an increase in the crystallization temperature of LLDPE. As expected, the increase in the crystallinity of the polyolefin matrix of composites led to higher elastic modulus, higher tensile strength, and lower elongation at break. Overall, these results show how to obtain the required mechanical features for halogen-free flame-retardant compounds for electric cable applications depending on the quantities of the two miscible components in the final blend.
