By the study of the pattern book Ying Zao Fa Shi (building regulations of Song Dynasty, 1103 AD), while analyzing the combining and dimensioning rule of timber framework and tile work, a model self-generating program has been compiled for the first time. The operating framework has been firstly defined, while solving the issues of clustering principle, connecting method, output classification, etc. with the detailed description of algorithm theory. Taking the corner bracket set and nine-ridge roof for example, after the compilation and debug by Grasshopper, according to various input parameters, various models have been generated automatically by the plugin, proving the velocity and the veracity of the algorithm.

As a complementary and alternative medicine in the western countries for decades, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for more than 2000 years in China. Because of the characteristics of the philosophical style and the unknown mechanism of action, TCM sometimes has been biasedly described as "fraught with pseudoscience". From the scientific basis of the systems biology, here we promoted a novel medical model called the entropic systems medicine which could be applied to scientize TCM in future. In entropic systems medicine, TCM and Western modern biomedicine target the different variables of the entropic system. For instance, while Western modern biomedicine directly targets the phenotypes and its SOCs of macrostates, TCM differently targets the microstates, entropy and entropic force to generate SOTFs gradually causing the differentiated syndromes to be slowly rearranged. The prerequisites to modernize TCM are the entropic systems biology having been well established so that the variables could be precisely monitored and mathematically calculated.

Arylamine N-acetyltransferases (NATs) are cytosolic enzymes, highly polymorphic, present in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. These enzymes play an important role in the detoxification and activation of xenobiotics as well as in the synthesis of endogenous compounds. Specific NATs have been pointed out in the literature as possible therapeutic targets. In particular, the human NAT1, for the treatment of certain cancers, and the NAT from M. tuberculosis (TBNAT), for the treatment of tuberculosis. This paper describes an in silico approach to prospect and select potentially inhibitors of NAT1 and TBNAT from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) using free available tools. A library with ligands from TCM was previously screened in order to select only compounds with optimal pharmacological properties. The affinity of the selected ligands with respect to NAT enzymes was then evaluated by virtual screening (VS). Subsequently, the complexes with the best ligands were submitted to molecular dynamics (MD) simulations aiming to obtain better quality information on affinity and selectivity. The results for one specific ligand, ZINC14690579, indicated its potential for affinity and selectivity. ZINC14690579 structure may represent the discovery of a new scaffold for future development of NAT inhibitors.

The paper discusses the change of meaning and metonymium of Emo in Chinese cyber language here. Drawing on corpus-based analysis of emo posts published in the social media network Sina micro blog, we investigate how such aesthetics and sociocultural meanings attached to being “Emo”serves as a metonymy that enables diverse representations of affective states as well as situated emotion enactments. The findings suggest that the term “Emo”has been stretched as it is no longer confined to emotional events within or possibly just beyond emo, with a broader range of listings reflecting different emotions in various contexts. The metonymical nature of the use of “Emo”in Chinese reflects a broader cultural and social phenomenon occurring today in China -- particularly among some young net users. The research underscores the emotional expression pattern of Chinese netizens, which renders a good reference to comprehensively understand the evolution of language type in digital context.

Sign Language Recognition (SLR) aims to bridge speech-impaired and general communities by recognizing signs from given videos. Researchers still face challenges developing efficient SLR systems because of the video’s complex background, light illumination, and subject structures. Recently many researchers developed a skeleton-based sign language recognition system to overcome the subject and background variation of hand gesture signs. However, skeleton-based SLR is still under exploration due to the lack of information and annotations on hand key points. More recently, researchers included body and face information with the hand gesture for the SLR, but their performance and efficiency are unsatisfactory. We proposed a Multi-Stream Graph-based Deep Neural Network (SL-GDN) for a skeleton-based SLR system to overcome the problems. The main purpose of the proposed SL-GDN approach is to improve the efficiency and performance of the SLR system with a low computational cost based on the human body pose in the form of 2D landmark locations. In the procedure, firstly, we constructed a skeleton graph based on the selected 27 whole-body key points among 67 key points to solve the inefficiency problems. Then we proposed multi-stream SL-GDN to extract features from the whole-body skeleton graph for four streams. Finally, we concatenated the four different features and applied a classification module to refine the feature and recognize corresponding sign classes. Our data-driven and graph construction method increases the system’s flexibility and brings high generability to adapt various data samples. We used three large-scale benchmark SLR datasets to evaluate the proposed model: WLASL, AUTSL and CSL. The demonstrated performance accuracy table proved the superiority of the proposed model, and we believe this will be considered a great invention in the SLR domain.

This article reviews all the major stages in the origins of life. From the emergence of matter in the initial Big Bang to the modern, civilized human being. On an immaterial level, it is proposed and explained how consciousness necessarily takes precedence over matter. Next, we explain how consciousness, with its ability to process information, selected the water molecule to breathe life into the periodic table of elements. We also explain why the notion of entropy allows us to evolve: "Die Entropie der Welt strebt einem Maximum zu" (second principle) and, therefore, takes precedence over the notion of energy, which, on the contrary, encourages us to preserve what we have: "Die Energie der Welt bleibt konstant" (first principle). This is followed by a discussion of the importance of quantum coherence and the need to rely on a second quantization formalism for a proper understanding of the physical-biochemical properties of water. Moreover, throughout the argument developed on the best and most fundamental things science has to offer, care is taken to link this knowledge to the great philosophies of the West (Greece), the East (China, India) or even to practices of a shamanic nature (Africa, America). Hence, finally, the proposal to reconsider all musical practice within the framework of the diapason of water at a frequency of 429.62 Hz, as well as all therapeutic practice on the basis of seven clearly identified and established frameworks of thought.

Blocking the interaction of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein with the human angiotensin-converting enzyme II (hACE2) protein serves as a therapeutic strategy for treating COVID-19. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments containing bioactive products could alleviate the symptoms of severe COVID-19. However, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants has complicated the process of developing broad-spectrum drugs. As such, the aim in this study was to explore the efficacy of TCM treatments for SARS-CoV-2 variants through targeting the interaction of the viral spike protein with the hACE2 receptor. The antiviral activity was systematically evaluated using a pseudovirus system. Scutellaria baicalensis was found to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection through affecting the interaction of viral spike protein with the hACE2 protein. The active molecules of S. baicalensis were identified and analyzed. Baicalein and baicalin, a flavone and a flavone glycoside, respectively, found in S. baicalensis, exhibited strong inhibitory activities, targeting the viral spike protein or hACE2 protein, respectively. Under optimized conditions, virus infection was inhibited by 98% via baicalein-treated pseudovirus and baicalin-treated hACE2. In summary, we identified the potential SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors of the interaction of the Omicron spike protein and hACE2 receptor from S. baicalensis. Future studies on the therapeutic application of baicalein and baicalin against SARS-CoV-2 variants are needed.

A number of epidemiological studies have implicated elevated iron levels with higher risks of cardiometabolic diseases, including the metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS is a pathologic clustering of metabolic derangements characterized by central obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, which can all lead to increased cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. However, it remains unclear whether a causal association exists between higher iron status and MetS and its associated risk components. Using the data from the Taiwan Biobank (TWB) (19,012 males; 42,340 females) and of the European Whites from the UK Biobank (UKB) (128,549 males; 142,817 females), we first constructed ethnic- and sex-specific hemoglobin-polygenic risk scores (Hb-PRS) as instrumental variable (IV) for iron status with the Hb-associated SNPs we previously identified from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We then conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to elucidate the causal role of elevated iron (either Hb-PRS quintiles or continuous Hb-PRS) on various metabolic components. MR-Egger regressions determined the potential pleiotropic effects of the constructed Hb-PRSs, while the causal relationship of Hb-PRS with anemia served as a control in the analyses. The mean Hb concentration range corresponding to the Hb-PRS quintiles is relatively narrow in both UKB (14.91-15.21 g/dL for males and 13.39-13.71 g/dL for females) and TWB (14.79-15.28 g/dL for males and 12.78-13.21 g/dL for females). In these windows of Hb-PRSs, we found differential associations of Hb-PRS with diabetes (T2D) or hyperglycemia (HGY) as compared to other MetS components. The highest quintiles of Hb-PRSs were causally associated with greater risks of hypertension (HTN) and hypertriglyceridemia (DLP) (i.e., [Taiwanese HC males: Q5 vs. Q1 ORHTN = 1.10 (1.00–1.21), p = 0.0473, Q4 vs. Q1 ORDLP = 1.10 (1.00–1.22), p = 0.0485; European White males: ORHTN = 1.05 (1.01–1.09), p = 0.0194, ORDLP = 1.04 (1.00–1.08), p = 0.0468]). Interestingly, we obtained a consistent negative causal association between increasing Hb-PRS quintiles and T2D or HGY risk across all sex subgroups (i.e., [Taiwanese HC females: ORHGY = 0.89 (0.84–0.95), 0.88 (0.83–0.94), 0.87 (0.82–0.93), 0.86 (0.81–0.92) from Q2 to Q5; European White females: ORHGY = 0.92 (0.87–0.98), 0.91 (0.86–0.97), 0.93 (0.87–0.98), 0.87 (0.82–0.93) from Q2 to Q5; all p < 0.05]. The positive causal relationships between Hb-PRSs and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and triglycerides (TG) but inverse causal association with glucose (GLU) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) further corroborated such findings. There is, however, a lack of causal association with central obesity (CO), while a U-shaped type of causality was observed for gout (GT) or hyperuricemia (HUA). Sensitivity analyses, which excluded subjects based on self-reports of health conditions or medications and hospital episode statistics data, revealed similar results. Our MR studies confirm a modest causal relationship between propensity of elevated iron status and increased risk of HTN and DLP. We have further observed that modestly lower iron levels causally contribute to the development of T2D. Further validation and elucidation of the underlying biological mechanisms are highly warranted.

Gene electrotransfer is one of the main non-viral methods for intracellular delivery of plasmid DNA, wherein pulsed electric fields are used to transiently permeabilize the cell membrane allowing enhanced transmembrane transport. By localizing the electric field over small portions of the cell membrane using nanostructured substrates, it is possible to increase considerably the gene electrotransfer efficiency while preserving cell viability. In this study, we design an electrotransfer approach based on commercially available cell culture inserts with polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) porous substrate. We first use multiscale numerical modelling to determine the pulse parameters, substrate pore size, and other factors that are expected to result in successful gene electrotransfer. Based on numerical results we design a simple device combining an insert with substrates containing pores with 0.4 um and 1.0 um diameter, a multiwell plate, and a pair of wire electrodes. We test the device in three mammalian cell lines and obtain transfection efficiencies similar to those achieved with bulk electroporation, but with low-voltage pulses that do not require the use of expensive electroporators. Our combined theoretical and experimental analysis calls for further systematic studies that will investigate the influence of substrate pore size and porosity on gene electrotransfer efficiency and cell viability.

China is striving to leverage the power of science and technology to green its agriculture while increasing grain productivity. In this context, this study presents the green growth rate of agriculture from the DEA-based Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) indicator, together with the growth rate of grain yields, and applies it to the case of Jiangsu, a major grain-producing province with a well-developed economy. It is found that Jiangsu's agriculture has generally performed well in the implementation of the two major national strategies of green development and grain security, especially in the northern Jiangsu, which is a major grain-producing area. In contrast, the phased fluctuations of green growth in agriculture in Southern Jiangsu are more pronounced, with even negative green growth occurring during the green agriculture movement. Much of the volatility in agricultural green growth at the provincial, subregional, municipal level comes from the effects of the movement of the green technology frontier led by best practitioners. Accordingly, the possibility of improving the weak state of the catch-up effect on green growth is explored from the perspective of the Chinese government-led agricultural science and innovation system; it also traces the green agricultural initiatives in the main grain-marketing areas that have failed to deliver the expected green growth, and recommends a review of such policies and refinement of the GTFP Index tool for assessing sustainable green growth.

: This study explores the perceptions of Chinese learners in Spain regarding the use of social networks for informal Spanish language learning. The objective is to identify the challenges and benefits of using social networks to address the real needs of students in learning Spanish. A qualitative phenomenological approach was adopted, focusing on participants’ perceptions before and after using social networks. Eight Chinese students were selected for the study. The study was conducted in Valencia and Barcelona, Spain, from 1 September 2023 to 20 March 2024, and three commonly used social media networks were compared. The results indicate positive perceptions towards social media as a tool for learning Spanish, highlighting its usefulness in improving language skills and enhancing cultural awareness. Additionally, Xiaohongshu and Bilibili emerged as the most popular platforms for Spanish language learning among Chinese students. This study concludes that social media effectively meets the authentic needs of Chinese students learning Spanish in Spain, enhancing both language skills and cultural adaptation. This multifaceted approach reflects the complexity of learning Spanish in the digital age, combining personal passion, professional aspirations, and cultural adaptation needs.

After reviewing the history of the struggle between human beings and plant diseases, insects and weeds, especially reviewing the thoughts of plant protection in ancient Chinese agricultural books, the target recognition of plant pests and the six types of plant protection methods and 36 subdi-vision measures were summarized. Then the development overview of pesticide application technology was focused and reviewed systematically by combining the development timeline of pesticide application and the key technologies including the performance measurement and the simulation and modeling of pesticide spraying system. And three suggestions for further research were proposed from the perspectives of human-being and environmental health, the sustainable and eco-friendly application medium, and the efficiently application equipment system in plant protection.
