Artificial intelligence techniques including machine learning models have shown success in variety of domains. This is more evident with complex models including deep learning. However, such success accompanied by vagueness around how the models work, the internal mechanism and making a decision. Explainable Artificial intelligence (XAI) emerged as a new field of research to uncover the mystery around how the complex models work. The ultimate aim of XAI is to make the complex models more transparent, trustworthy and understandable even by lay-persons with no technical background. XAI could come in different forms including heatmaps applied to images, significant concepts to the model when making a decision, informative features with tabular data, one-feature effect on the outcome, fuzzy logic rules, textual explanation through images captioning, uncertainty quantification and much more. There are several factors affect the XAI forms including the used data and the model. This paper is dedicated to review and group the current XAI methods in the literature based on the outcome form. In addition, the paper discusses the XAI groups, how they work, strengths and weaknesses. Our paper shows that although e XAI methods have been used extensively within the research context, their employability in real life problems especially in sensitive domains might be unreasonable in the current stage.

Recent advances in technology have propelled Artificial Intelligence (AI) into a crucial role in everyday life, enhancing human performance through sophisticated models and algorithms. However, the focus on predictive accuracy has often resulted in opaque, black box models that lack transparency in decision-making. To address this issue, significant efforts have been made to develop explainable AI (XAI) systems that make outcomes comprehensible to users. Various approaches, including new concepts, models, and user interfaces, aim to improve explainability, build user trust, enhance satisfaction, and increase task performance. Evaluation research has emerged to define and measure the quality of these explanations, differentiating between formal evaluation methods and empirical approaches that utilize techniques from psychology and human-computer interaction. Despite the importance of empirical studies, evaluations remain underutilized, with literature reviews indicating a lack of rigorous evaluations from the user perspective. This review aims to guide researchers and practitioners in conducting effective empirical user-centered evaluations by analyzing several studies, categorizing their objectives, scope, and evaluation metrics, and offering an orientation map for research design and metric measurement.

The global smelting business of nickel using rotary kilns and electric furnaces is expanding due to the growth of the secondary battery market. Efficient operation of electric furnaces requires consistent calcine temperature in rotary kilns, which involves shearing processes. Direct measurement of calcine temperature in rotary kilns presents challenges due to inaccuracies and operational limitations, and while AI predictions are feasible, reliance on them without understanding influencing factors is risky. To address this challenge, various algorithms including XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, and GRU were employed for calcine temperature prediction, with CatBoost achieving the best performance, followed by XGBoost, LightGBM, and GRU in terms of MAPE. The influential factors on calcine temperature were identified using SHAP from XAI in the context of the CatBoost model. By incorporating seven out of twenty operational factors, the calcine temperature increased from 840℃ in 2023 to 907℃ by April 2024, concurrently reducing the power ratio of the electric furnace by 7.8%.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems involve diverse components, such as data, models, users and predicted outcomes. To elucidate these different aspects of AI systems, multifaceted explanations that combine diverse explainable AI (XAI) methods are beneficial. However, popularly adopted user-centric XAI evaluation methods do not measure these explanations across the different components of the system. In this position paper, we advocate for an approach tailored to evaluate XAI methods considering the diverse dimensions of explainability within AI systems using a normalised scale. We argue that the prevalent user-centric evaluation methods fall short of facilitating meaningful comparisons across different types of XAI methodologies. Moreover, we discuss the potential advantages of adopting a standardised approach, which would enable comprehensive evaluations of explainability across systems. By considering various dimensions of explainability, such as data, model, predictions, and target users, a standardised evaluation approach promises to facilitate both inter-system and intra-system comparisons for user-centric AI systems.

Software engineering is a comprehensive process that requires developers and team members to collaborate across multiple tasks. In software testing, bug triaging is a tedious and time-consuming process. Assigning bugs to the appropriate developers can save time and maintain their motivation. However, without knowledge about a bug's class, triaging is difficult. Motivated by this challenge, this paper focuses on the problem of assigning the suitable developer to new bug by analyzing the history of developers’ profiles and analyzing history of bugs for all developers using machine learning-based recommender systems. Explainable AI (XAI) is AI that humans can understand. It contrasts with "black box" AI, which even its designers can't explain. By providing appropriate explanations for results, users can better comprehend the underlying insight behind the outcomes, boosting the recommender system's effectiveness, transparency, and confidence. In this paper, we propose two explainable models for recommendation. The first one is an explainable recommender model for personalized developers generated from bug history to know what the preferred type of bug is for each developer. The second model is an explainable recommender model based on bugs to generate the best developer for each bug from bug history.

: Mistrust, amplified by numerous artificial intelligence (AI) related incidents, has caused the energy and industrial sectors to be amongst the slowest adopter of AI methods. Central to this issue is the black-box problem of AI, which impedes investments and fast becoming a legal hazard for users. Explainable AI (XAI) is a recent paradigm to tackle this challenge. Being the backbone of the industry, the prognostic and health management (PHM) domain has recently been introduced to XAI. However, many deficiencies, particularly lack of explanation assessment methods and uncertainty quantification, plague this young field. In this paper, we elaborate a framework on explainable anomaly detection and failure prognostic employing a Bayesian deep learning model to generate local and global explanations from the PHM tasks. An uncertainty measure of the Bayesian model is utilized as marker for anomalies expanding the prognostic explanation scope to include model’s confidence. Also, the global explanation is used to improve prognostic performance, an aspect neglected from the handful of PHM-XAI publications. The quality of the explanation is finally examined employing local accuracy and consistency properties. The method is tested on real-world gas turbine anomalies and synthetic turbofan data failure prediction. Seven out of eight of the tested anomalies were successfully identified. Additionally, the prognostic outcome showed 19% improvement in statistical terms and achieved the highest prognostic score amongst best published results on the topic.

Biases in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) systems due to skewed datasets problematise the application of prediction models in practice. Representation bias is a prevalent form of bias found in the majority of datasets. This bias arises when training data inadequately represents certain segments of the data space, resulting in poor generalisation of prediction models. Despite AI practitioners employing various methods to mitigate representation bias, their effectiveness is often limited due to a lack of thorough domain knowledge. To address this limitation, this paper introduces human-in-the-loop interaction approaches for representation debiasing of generated data involving domain experts. Our work advocates for a controlled data generation process involving domain experts to effectively mitigate the effects of representation bias. We argue that domain experts can leverage their expertise to assess how representation bias affects prediction models. Moreover, our interaction approaches can facilitate domain experts in steering data augmentation algorithms to produce debiased augmented data and validate or refine the generated samples to reduce representation bias. We also discuss how these approaches can be leveraged for designing and developing user-centred AI systems to mitigate the impact of representation bias through effective collaboration between domain experts and AI.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is required since multiple resources are in need to complete depending on a daily basis. As a result, automating routine tasks is an excellent idea. This reduces the foundation's work schedules while also improving efficiency. Furthermore, the business can obtain talented personnel for the business strategy through Artificial Intelligence. Explainability in XAI derives from a combination of strategies that improve machine learning models' environmental flexibility and interpretability. When Artificial Intelligence is trained with a large number of variables to which we apply alterations, the entire processing is turned into a black box model which is in turn difficult to understand. The data for this research's quantitative analysis is gathered from the IEEE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. This study looked at a variety of fields engaged in the (Explainable Artificial Intelligence) XAI trend, as well as the most commonly employed techniques in domain of XAI, the location from which these studies were conducted, the year-by-year publishing trend, and the most frequently occurring keywords in the abstract. Ultimately, the quantitative review reveals that employing Explainable Artificial Intelligence or XAI methodologies, there is plenty of opportunity for more research in this field.

Recanalization poses challenge in coil embolization for cerebral aneurysms. Establishing predictive models for post-embolization recanalization is important for clinical decision-making. However, conventional statistical and machine learning (ML) models may overlook critical parameters during the initial selection process. In this study, we automated the identification of significant hemodynamic parameters using a PointNet-based deep neural network (DNN), leveraging their inherent 3D features. Further feature analysis was conducted utilizing saliency mapping, an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) technique. The study encompassed the analysis of velocity, pressure, and wall shear stress (WSS) in both pre- and post-coiling models derived from computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations for 59 aneurysms. Velocity was identified as the most pivotal parameter, supported by the lowest P-value from statistical analysis and the highest area under the curves (AUROC)/precision-recall curves (AUPRC) values from DNN model. Moreover, visual XAI analysis revealed robust injection flow zones with notable impingement points in pre-coiling models, as well as pronounced interplay between flow dynamics and the coiling plane were important 3D features in identifying the recanalized aneurysms. The combination of DNN and XAI was found to be an accurate and explainable approach not only at predicting post-embolization recanalization but also at discovering unknown features in the future.

Abstract: Despite existing several techniques for distributed sensing (temperature and strain) using standard Single Mode optical Fiber (SMF), compensating or decoupling both effects is mandatory for many applications. Currently, most of the decoupling techniques require special optical fibers and are difficult to implement with high spatial resolution distributed techniques, such as ϕ-PA-OFDR. So, this work’s objective is to study the feasibility of decoupling temperature and strain out of a ϕ-PA-OFDR readouts taken over an SMF. For this purpose, the readouts will be subjected to a study using several Machine Learning algorithms, among them, Deep Neural Networks. The motivation which underlies this target is the current blockage in the widespread use of Fiber Optic Sensors in situations where both strain and temperature change, due to the coupled dependence of currently developed sensing methods. Instead of using other types of sensors or even other interrogation methods, the objective of this work is to analyze the available information in order to develop a sensing method capable of providing information about strain and temperature simultaneously.

The aim of Predictive Maintenance, within the field of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM), is to identify and anticipate potential issues in the equipment before these become critical. The main challenge to be addressed is to assess the amount of time a piece of equipment will function effectively before it fails, which is known as Remaining Useful Life (RUL). Deep Learning (DL) models, such as Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, have been widely adopted to address the task, with great success. However, it is well known that this kind of black box models are opaque decision systems, and it may be hard to explain its outputs to stakeholders (experts in the industrial equipment). Due to the large number of parameters that determine the behavior of these complex models, understanding the reasoning behind the predictions is challenging. This work presents a critical and comparative revision on a number of XAI methods applied on time series regression model for PM. The aim is to explore XAI methods within time series regression, which have been less studied than those for time series classification. The model used during the experimentation is a DCNN trained to predict the RUL of an aircraft engine. The methods are reviewed and compared using a set of metrics that quantifies a number of desirable properties that any XAI method should fulfill. The results show that GRAD-CAM is the most robust method, and that the best layer is not the bottom one, as is commonly seen within the context of Image Processing.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) plays a vital role in increasing transparency and trust in machine learning models, particularly when applied to tabular data which is used in domains such as finance, healthcare, and marketing. This paper presents an extensive survey of XAI techniques used with tabular data and aims to analyze recent research developments since 2021. The survey classes and describes several XAI techniques pertinent to tabular data, it identifies challenges specific to this domain, and explores potential applications and emerging trends. Future research directions are outlined, concentrating on the need for clear definitions of terminology used, data security, user-centric explanations, enhanced interaction, robust evaluation metrics, and advancements in adversarial example-based analysis. The aim is to contribute to the evolving field of XAI, and provide insights for effective, trustworthy, and transparent decision-making using tabular data.

The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to considerable progress in Automated Fact Verification (AFV). This process involves collecting evidence for a statement, assessing its relevance, and predicting its accuracy. Recently, research has begun to explore automatic explanations as an integral part of the accuracy analysis process. However, the explainability within AFV is lagging compared to the wider field of explainable AI (XAI), which aims at making AI decisions more transparent. This study looks at the notion of explainability as a topic in the field of XAI, with a focus on how it applies to the specific task of Automatic Fact Verification. It examines the explainability of AFV, taking into account architectural, methodological, and dataset-related elements, with the aim of making AI more comprehensible and acceptable to the general society. Although there is a general consensus on the need for AI systems to be explainable, there a dearth of systems and processes to achieve it. In this research, we investigate the concept of explainable AI in general and demonstrate its various aspects through the particular task of Automated Fact Verification. We explore topic of faithfulness in the context of local and global explainability and how these correspond with architectural, methodological and data-based ways of achieving it. We examine these concepts for the specific case of AFV and analyze the current datasets used for AFV and how they can be adapted to further the identified aims on XAI. The paper concludes by highlighting the gaps and limitations in current data science practices and possible recommendations for modifications in architectural and data curation processes that would further the goals of XAI.

The last wave of Artificial Intelligence is dedicating particular emphasis to the line of explainability research. The potential of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) in producing trustworthy computer-aided-diagnosis systems and its usage for knowledge discovery are collecting interest in the Medical Imaging (MI) community to support the diagnostic process and the discovery of image biomarkers. Most of the existing XAI applications in MI were focused on interpreting the predictions returned by deep neural networks, typically including attribution techniques with saliency map approaches and other feature visualization methods. However, these are often criticized for providing incorrect and incomplete representations of the black-box models’ behaviour. This raises the attention in proposing models intentionally designed to be self-explanatory. In particular, part-prototype (PP) models are interpretable-by-design computer vision (CV) models that base their decision process in learning and identifying representative prototypical parts from the input images, and they are collecting increasing interest and results in MI applications. This narrative review provides a summary of existing PP networks, their application in MI analysis and current challenges.

Clustering is a very common analysis of data present in large datasets, with the aims of understanding and summarizing data, and discovering similarities, among others. However, despite the present success of subsymbolic methods for data clustering, the description of the obtained clusters cannot rely on the intricacies of the subsymbolic processing. For clusters of data expressed in the Resource Description Framework (RDF) we extend and implement an optimized previously proposed logic-based methodology which computed an RDF structure — called a Common Subsumer — describing the commonalities among all resources. We tested our implementation with two open, and very different RDF datasets: one devoted to Public Procurement, and the other devoted to drugs in Pharmacology. For both datasets, we were able to provide reasonably concise and readable descriptions of clusters up to 1800 resources. Our analysis shows the viability of our methodology and computation, and paves the way for general cluster explanations to lay users.

In recent years, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has received attention in the Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) field due to its ability to acquire images both day and night, combined with the superior resolution offered by the latest sensors. However, despite advances, there remains a deficiency in dataset quality and quantity. This has necessitated the use of simulated data to overcome challenges associated with obtaining large quantities of high-quality images of targets and their subsequent labeling. In this study, we trained a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) using a simulated dataset, subsequently employing it to classify real images from the MSTAR dataset. Traditional training methodologies often struggle with generalization when confronted with domain disparities between simulated and real data. To mitigate this, we exploited Margin Disparity Discrepancy (MDD), a domain adaptation technique not previously explored in SAR context. Findings from this study showcased a 13% increase in classification accuracy and improved generalization using MDD. Through Explainable AI (XAI) techniques such as t-SNE and other metrics like Kullback Leibler Divergence (KLD), we revealed a more distinct alignment of feature spaces between the two domains after domain adaptation, emphasizing MDD’s role in enhancing model accuracy and generalization.

Dementia is a group of detrimental diseases and conditions that damage the human brain and impair mental functioning. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to develop robust computer-aided diagnostic tools, particularly AI models for detection. However, their clinical implementation remains limited. One issue identified is that despite achieving high accuracy, AI-powered predictions have relied on single features or small sets of features in limited categories, hindering their robustness and generalizability. Moreover, the accuracy alone has not been sufficient to convince medical practitioners to adopt these tools, as they require transparent and scientifically grounded diagnostic processes. This study aims to improve the transparency and reliability of AI models in predicting dementia through three key steps: 1) compare a Machine Learning (ML) model's accuracy in detecting dementia when trained on a multi-domain dataset to when trained on subsets of features, 2) evaluate additional ML models for dementia detection using the multi-domain dataset, and 3) apply Explainable AI (XAI) to elucidate the importance of specific features in ML-based predictions, thereby enhancing transparency and interpretability. We hypothesize that utilizing multi-domain data will enhance the performance of ML models. Furthermore, XAI will demonstrate that features with high influence on the model's decisions are aligned with established indicators of dementia. This study contributes to the field by constructing lightweight predictive models that deliver highly accurate performance while enhancing transparency and interpretability, advancing toward clinically applicable AI-powered diagnosis.

In this study, we propose a scalable deep learning approach to automated phenotyping using UAV multispectral imagery, exemplified by yellow rust detection in winter wheat. We adopt a high granularity scoring method (1 to 9 scale) to align with international standards and plant breeders’ needs. Using a lower spatial resolution (60m flight height at 2.5cm GSD), we reduce the data volume by a factor of 3.4, making large-scale phenotyping faster and more cost-effective while obtaining results comparable to those of the state-of-the-art. Our model incorporates explainability components to optimise spectral bands and flight schedules, achieving top-3 accuracies of 0.87 for validation and 0.67 and 0.70 on two separate test sets. We demonstrate that a minimal set of bands (EVI, Red, and GNDVI) can achieve results comparable to more complex setups, highlighting the potential for cost-effective solutions. Additionally, we show that high performance can be maintained with fewer time steps, reducing operational complexity. Our interpretable model components improve performance through regularisation and provide actionable insights for agronomists and plant breeders. This scalable and explainable approach offers an efficient solution for yellow rust phenotyping and can be adapted for other phenotypes and species, with future work focusing on optimising the balance between spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions.

Disorders of swallowing often lead to pneumonia when material enters the airways (aspiration). Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) plays a key role in the diagnostics of aspiration but is prone to human errors. An AI-based tool could facilitate this process. Recent non-endoscopic/non-radiologic attempts to detect aspiration using machine-learning approaches have led to unsatisfying accuracy and show black box characteristics. Hence, for clinical users it is hard to trust in these model decisions. Our aim is to introduce an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approach to detect aspiration in FEES. Our approach is to teach the AI about the relevant anatomical structures like the vocal cords and the glottis based on 92 annotated FEES videos. Simultaneously, it is trained to detect bolus that passes the glottis and becomes aspirated. During testing, the AI successfully recognized glottis and vocal cords, but could not yet achieve satisfying aspiration detection quality. Albeit detection performance has to be optimized, our architecture results in a final model that explains its assessment by locating meaningful frames with relevant aspiration events and by highlighting the suspected bolus. In contrast to comparable AI tools, our framework is verifiable, interpretable and therefor accountable for clinical users.

Functional connectivity (FC) is a potential candidate that can increase the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in the elderly because of its compensatory role in neural circuits. However, it is difficult to decode FC by current machine learning techniques because of a lack of its physiological understanding. To investigate the suitability of FC in BCI for the elderly, we propose the decoding of lower- and higher-order FCs using a convolutional neural network (CNN) in six cognitive-motor tasks. The layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) method describes how age-related changes in FCs impact BCI applications for the elderly compared to younger adults. Seventeen younger (24.5±2.7 years) and twelve older (72.5±3.2 years) adults were recruited to perform tasks related to hand-force control with or without mental calculation. CNN yielded a six-class classification accuracy of 75.3% in the elderly, exceeding the 70.7% accuracy for the younger adults. In the elderly, the proposed method increases the classification accuracy by 88.3% compared to the filter-bank common spatial pattern (FBCSP). LRP results revealed that both lower- and higher-order FCs were dominantly overactivated in the prefrontal lobe depending on task type. These findings suggest a promising application of multi-order FC with deep learning on BCI systems for the elderly.

Malaria and Typhoid fever are prevalent diseases in tropical regions, exacerbated by unclear protocols, drug resistance, and environmental factors. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is crucial to improve accessibility and reduce mortality rates. Traditional diagnosis methods cannot effectively capture the complexities of these diseases due to the presence of confusable symptoms. Although machine learning (ML) models offer accurate predictions, they operate as "black boxes" with non-interpretable decision-making processes, making it challenging for healthcare providers to comprehend how the conclusions are reached. This study employs explainable AI (XAI) models such as Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME), and Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, to clarify diagnostic results for healthcare workers, building trust and transparency in medical diagnostics. The models were implemented on Google Colab and Visual Studio Code because of their rich libraries and extensions. Results showed that the Random Forest model outperformed Extreme Gradient Boost and Support Vector Machines and important features for predicting Malaria and Typhoid were identified with the LIME plots. Among LLMs, ChatGPT 3.5 demonstrates a comparative advantage over Gemini and Perplexity, hence highlighting how crucial it is to use a hybrid strategy that combines ML, XAI, and LLMs to improve diagnostic performance and reliability in healthcare applications. The study recommends implementing the integrated ML, LIME, and LLM processes because it streamlines the development and maintenance process's workflow overall, makes use of resources more effectively, and improves explainability by allowing the LLM to consider the complete context that LIME provides.

While increasing empirical evidence suggests that global time series forecasting models can achieve better forecasting performance than local ones, there is a research void regarding when and why the global models fail to provide a good forecast. This paper uses anomaly detection algorithms and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to answer when and why a forecast should not be trusted. To address this issue, a dashboard was built to inform the user regarding (i) the relevance of the features for that particular forecast, (ii) which training samples most likely influenced the forecast outcome, (iii) why the forecast is considered an outlier, and (iv) provide a range of counterfactual examples to understand value changes, in the feature vector or the predicted value, can lead to a different outcome. Moreover, a modular architecture and a methodology were developed to iteratively remove noisy data instances from the train set, to enhance the overall global time series forecasting model performance. Finally, to test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, it was validated on two publicly available real-world datasets.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) describes computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. Examples of AI techniques are machine learning, neural networks and deep learning. AI can be applied in many different areas, such as econometrics, biometry, e-commerce and the automotive industry. In recent years, AI has found its way into healthcare as well, helping doctors to make better decisions (‘clinical decision support’), localizing tumors in magnetic resonance images, reading and analyzing reports written by radiologists and pathologists, and much more. However, AI has one big risk: it can be perceived as a ‘black box’, limiting trust in its reliability, which is a very big issue in an area in which a decision can mean life or death. As a result, the term Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) has been gaining momentum. XAI tries to ensure that AI algorithms (and the resulting decisions) can be understood by humans. In this narrative review, we will have a look at the current status of XAI in healthcare, describe several issues around XAI, and discuss whether it can really help healthcare to advance, for example by increasing understanding and trust. Finally, alternatives to increase trust in AI are discussed, as well as future research possibilities in the area of XAI.

Advances in early detection of Breast cancer and treatment improvements have significant-ly increased survival rates. Traditional screening methods, including mammography, MRI, ultrasound, and biopsies, while effective, often come with high costs and risks. Recently, thermal imaging has gained attention due to its minimal risks compared to mammography, although it is not widely adopted as a primary detection tool since it depends on identifying skin temperature changes and lesions. The advent of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) has enhanced the effectiveness of breast cancer detection and diagnosis using this technology. In this study a novel methodology for developing an interpretable computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for breast cancer detection, leveraging explaina-ble Artificial Intelligence (XAI) throughout its various phases. To achieve these goals, we proposed a new multi-objective optimization approach named Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (HPSO) and Hybrid spider Monkey Optimization algorithm (HSMO). These algorithms simultaneously combine the continuous and binary representations of PSO and SMO to effectively manage trade-offs between Accuracy, feature selection and hyperparameter tuning. We evaluate several CAD models and investigate the impact of handcrafted methods such as Local Binary Patterns (LBP), Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Gabor filters, and edge detection. We further shedding light on the effect of feature selection and optimization on feature attribution and model decision-making processes using the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) framework, with a particular emphasis on cancer classification using the DMR-IR dataset. The results of our experiments demonstrate in all trials that the performance of the model is improved. Also with HSMO our models achieved a high accuracy of 98.27% and F1- score of 98.15% while selecting only 25.78% of the HOG features. This approach not only boosts the performance of CAD models but also ensures comprehensive interpretability. As the educational landscape evolves, understanding and fostering student adaptability has become increasingly critical. This study presents a comparative analysis of (XAI) techniques to interpret machine learning models aimed at classifying student adaptability levels. Leveraging a robust dataset, we employed several machine learning algorithms with a particular focus on Random Forest, which demonstrated a 91% accuracy. Our study utilizes (SHAP), (LIME), Anchors, (ALE), and counterfactual explanations to reveal the specific contributions of various features impacting adaptability predictions. Consistently, 'Class Duration' and 'Financial Condition' emerge as key factors, while the study also underscores the subtle effects of 'Institution Type' and 'Load-shedding'. This multi-faceted interpretability approach bridges the gap between machine learning performance and educational relevance, presenting a model that not only predicts but also explains the dynamic factors influencing student adaptability. The synthesized insights advocate for educational policies accommodating socioeconomic factors, instructional time, and infrastructure stability to enhance student adaptability. The implications extend to informed and personalized educational interventions, fostering an adaptable learning environment.
