The seedling plant factory requires precise environmental control to ensure uniform growth within a short time cultivation period. To provide optimal temperature, humidity, and airflow, it is necessary to interpret the internal aerodynamics. However, the analysis based on field experiments has limitations in interpreting the invisible flow patterns. To overcome this limitation, CFD simulations were employed. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a CFD model of the seedling plant factory with the porous panel for improving the internal environment and to identify the fluid dynamics issues using the validated model. Based on the field monitoring data obtained by 90 data loggers, the average temperature and humidity during the 16-hour light period and 8-hour dark period were maintained within 1% of the set values. However, regional differences occurred, which led to the design of a CFD model incorporating the porous panel to simulate these variations. The Realizable k-ε turbulence model, which exhibited an error of 4.0% in comparison with the field data, was selected through validation test among four different turbulence models with the same configuration of the seedling plant factory. The CFD simulation results were interpreted quantitatively and qualitatively, focusing on the airflow, temperature, and humidity distributions caused by the air conditioner and humidifier. Variations in average temperature of up to 0.5 degrees and velocity differences of 0.28 m/s were observed depending on the location of the cultivation shelves. The locations and causes of stagnant regions resulting from the airflow patterns were identified through the simulations.

This review discusses approaches and implementations of flowrate sensing and measurement in smart inhalers for effective respiratory disease management. It highlights the importance of compliance with proper inhaling techniques and consistent adherence for managing respiratory conditions. Methods and relevant commercial and prototype research-type devices for sensing and measuring inhalation flowrate in smart inhalers are studied and compared. The study argues that utilisation of acoustic analysis and air pressure sensing is a promising approach to detect and evaluate the inhaling action ultimately allowing to improve the treatment outcomes and life quality of patients with respiratory diseases.

Drying grains in a fixed bed can be an interesting alternative to prevent undesirable breaks and fractures of solids due to mechanical shocks, something that cannot be avoided when drying in moving beds. A disadvantage of fixed bed drying is that there can be significant gradients in the critical variables if the layer of particulate solids is thick. This work shows that periodically changing the direction of drying air flow is an effective technique to reduce differences within the bed and allow better uniformity of the product. Drying in a thick layer of 10 cm of sorghum grains was carried out at 50 and 60oC for air flow velocity of 2.1 m.s-1. The results showed that despite increasing the total drying time, the technique actually allowed a significant decrease in the temperature gradients and moisture content of the sorghum grains. The change in direction of the air flow caused the drying front to be displaced, sometimes towards the top, sometimes towards the base of the bed. At 50oC, drying lasted a total of 240 min, bringing the sorghum grains to an average overall moisture content of 0.13 on a dry basis.

Apart from headwind changes, crosswind changes may be hazardous to the aircraft operation. This paper presents two cases of recently observed crosswind changes from the range height indicator scans of ground-based remote-sensing meteorological equipment, namely, an X-band microwave radar and a short-range LIDAR. Rapidly evolving winds have been observed by the equipment in tropical cyclone situations, and they are found to have high level of turbulence and possibly to be associated with vertically propagating waves. In order to study the feasibility of predicting such disturbed airflow, mesoscale meteorological model and computational fluid dynamics model with high spatial resolution are used in this paper. It is found that the models could capture the rapidly evolving airflow features rather well, including the turbulence level, the waves, the rapidly changing wind speeds and the presence of reverse flow. This paper aims at providing a reference to the airports to consider the feasibility of performing high resolution numerical simulation of rapidly evolving airflow to alert the pilots in advance for airports in complex terrain and setup of buildings.

Over the years, researchers have been developing different ventilation strategies as a potential solution for controlling infectious airborne transmissions in healthcare facilities. The effects of ventilation systems on airflow characteristics have been extensively discussed among researchers since SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in 2019. Based on a bibliometric study of 154 publications from 1970 to 2021 retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database, this paper examines the research landscape on the effects of ventilation strategies on airflow analysis in healthcare facilities. Results show that China is the most productive country due to its significant contributions to the top prolific authors and funding agencies, which have promoted the research development of the topic. Several research hotspots were identified through keyword co-occurrence analysis. Cluster 1 highlights the ventilation studies involving ventilation layouts and ventilation rates in healthcare facilities. Cluster 2 underlines the computational analysis of ventilation performance for reducing the exposure risk of occupants, which promotes the development of infection control measures. Cluster 3 strengthens the knowledge of the emission and dispersion characteristics of respiratory droplets in healthcare facilities. Overall, this paper highlights the future direction of the current research field other than identifying strategic collaborators and suitable publication outlets for interested researchers.

Abstract: Circuit breakers are affected by multiple lightning strikes after the breaker has been tripped and can break down again, which will reduce the life of the circuit breaker and threaten the stable operation of the power system. Aiming at this problem, the paper obtained the temperature diffusion process of the inrush current process of circuit breaker opening and breaking through the schlieren technique, and combined with the existing image recognition technology to obtain the temperature characteristics of the airflow in the air gap of the contact, and the characteristics of the airflow flow. The results of the study show that the circuit breaker breakdown process generates a shock wave with a velocity approximately equal to the speed of sound under the same conditions. The maximum velocity of the airflow boundary diffusion is about 1/4 of the speed of sound under the same condition, and it decays very fast, reducing to the airflow drift velocity within 10ms after breakdown. The maximum temperature of the thermals is concentrated between 6000 and 8000 K and the temperature change is approximately inversely proportional to the square of time. The research provides the basis for the design of circuit breaker contact structure, opening speed optimization method, interrupter chamber and insulation design optimization.

The airflow carried by artificial aeration provides oxidant O2 for microbial growth and mineral dissolution in heap bioleaching. To investigate the effect of forced aeration rate on bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ores, column bioleaching experiments with six columns were conducted in the aeration range of 0~150 L/h at 30~45 ℃. The results showed that when the aeration rate was higher than 95 L/h, the proportions of heap settlement and fine particles mass were much greater than that without aeration. The final total Fe concentration and bacterial cell numbers in pregnant leach solution increased with the increase of aeration rate.The final concentrations of Cu2 + in the mother liquor under aeration conditions of 60-150 L / h were 1.411, 1.432, 1.498, 1.491 and 1.583 g / L, respectively, which were higher than 1.345 g / L under non-aeration conditions. When the aeration rate was 150 L / h, the final Cu leaching rate was 80.1 %, which was 11.4 % higher than that without aeration ( 68.7 % ). Furthermore, in the early stage of leaching, copper leaching rate with 95 L/h aeration rate remained the highest. 结论Artificial aeration accelerates the bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ores by improving porosity structure, temperature range of bacterial activity and microbial catalyzed dissolution of targeted minerals.

Polysaccharides such as alginate and gellan gum are biocompatible and easily accessible biopolymers with excellent properties to produce microparticles as drug delivery systems. However, the production methods often fail in reproducibility, compromising the translational potential of such systems. In this work, microparticles made from gellan gum and alginate were optimized using the coaxial air flow method, and an inexpensive and reproducible production method. A Design of Experiments was used to identify the main parameters that affect the microparticle’s production and optimization, focusing on the diameter and dispersibility. Airflow was the most significant factor for both parameters. Pump flow affected the diameter, whilst the gellan gum/alginate ratio affected dispersibility. After optimization, microparticle swelling, drug entrapment and release profile were analyzed at two pH, 7.4 and 6.5. Using methylene blue as a model drug, higher encapsulation and swelling indexes were obtained at pH 7.4, whilst a more pronounced release occurred at pH 6.5. The microparticle release profiles were studied by resorting to well-known models, showing a Fickian type release. The developed microparticles show promising results as drug-delivery vehicles for biomedical applications.

An energy model that correlates fan airflow, head, speed, and system power input is essential to detect device faults and optimize control strategies in fan systems. Since the application of variable frequency drives (VFDs) makes the motor efficiency data published by manufacturers inapplicable, the fan efficiency and drive (belt-motor-VFD) efficiency must be identified for each individual system to obtain accurate energy models. The objectives of this paper are to identify an energy model of existing VFD-motor-fan systems using available experimental data and demonstrate its applications in loose belt fault detection and virtual airflow meter development for optimal control. First, an approach is developed to identify the fan head, fan efficiency and drive efficiency curves using available fan head, speed, and system power input as well as temporarily measured airflow rate without measuring shaft power. Then the energy model is identified for an existing VFD-motor-fan system. Finally, the identified model is applied to detect the slipped belt faults and develop the virtual airflow meter. The experiment results reveal that the developed approach can effectively obtain the energy model of VFD-motor-fan systems and the model can be applied to effectively detect slipped belt faults and accurately calculate the fan airflow rate.

Introduction: The Elevation Training Mask 2.0 (ETM) has been introduced as a novel tool to allow for respiratory muscle training and altitude exposure during exercise that can improve performance and hematological markers in elite and well-trained athletes. Thus, the aim of the present study was to assess the effect of wearing ETM while training on erythropoietin (EPO), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), peak oxygen consumption (VO2max), lactate, and 1000-m kayaking performance in elite Kayaking girls. Methods: Thirty elite Kayaking girls (14 to 18-year-old) were equally and randomly assigned into mask, no mask, and control groups. The mask and no-mask groups completed 8 weeks of repeated sprint training, while the control group performed their routine kayaking training programs. Pre- and post-training tests included EPO, VEGF, VO2max, lactate, and 1000-m kayaking performance. Results: 1000-m time trial significantly decreased for mask (p < 0.001) and control (p = 0.035) groups, and was significantly lower in mask group than control (p = 0.014) and no mask (p = 0.009) groups. EPO did not show any significant changes for all groups. VEGF was increased significantly for mask (p = 0.04) and no mask (p = 0.014) groups. Lactate was decreased significantly for mask group (p = 0.025). VO2max increased significantly for no mask group (p = 0.021). Conclusion: Wearing the ETM while participating in 8 weeks of repeated sprint training might improve specific blood markers and endurance performance, especially anaerobic pathways. Performing repeated sprint training while wearing ETM has the potential to enhance performance in Kayak racing.

This paper experimented with a methodology of machine learning modelling using virtual samples generated by a fast CFD (Computational Fluid Duy) simulations, in order to predict the greenhouse natural ventilation. However, the output natural ventilation rates using fast two-dimensional (2D) CFD models are not always consistent with the three-dimensional (3D) one for all the scenarios. The first contribution of this paper is a proposed comparative modelling methodology between two-dimensional and three-dimensional CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) studies, regarding its validity, especially when buildings are in rows. The results show that the error on the ventilation rate prediction could exceed 50%, if 2D models are not properly used. Subsequently, in those scenarios where the 2D and the 3D model had equal accuracy, nearly one thousand samples were generated using fast 2D CFD simulations to train natural ventilation rate regression tree-model. This model is efficient to deal with the combined effect of wind pressure and thermal gradients under various vent configurations, with only four necessary inputs. In addition, by analyzing the wind speed distribution contour of the outdoor wind field around the greenhouse rows, the optimal wind speed measuring locations were determined to eliminate interference for predicting the natural ventilation rate.

Accurate measurement of low-level thoron gas and high-accuracy calibration of thoron measurement devices are essential for assessing and preventing thoron radiological risks. This study aimed to develop a thoron gas measurement technique using an airflow-through scintillation cell for both low-level measurement and high-accuracy calibration. To achieve this, a compartment model was developed to estimate the influence of progeny deposition and accumulation on the wall of the scintillation cell to prevent overestimation of thoron. A self-developed scintillation cell was utilized to implement and validate this technique. The lower detection limit and measurement uncertainty were then evaluated to assess the feasibility of the technique for low-level measurement and high-accuracy calibration. The results showed that the compartment model effectively addressed the influence of the progeny deposition. The measurement technique achieved a lower detection limit below 100 Bq m-3 even with the coexistence of 100 Bq m-3 of radon and attained a measurement uncertainty (k = 2) below 10% when the concentration of thoron exceeded 1,000 Bq m-3. In summary, this study developed a reliable and practical thoron gas measurement technique using an airflow-through scintillation cell with consideration for progeny deposition, and is expected to contribute to the assessment and prevention of thoron radiological risk.

Pharmaceutical aerosols play a key role in the treatment of lung disorders, but also systemic diseases, due to their ability to target specific areas of the respiratory system (RS). This article focuses on identifying and clarifying the influence of various factors involved in the generation of aerosol micro- and nanoparticles on their regional distribution and deposition in the RS. Attention is given to the importance of process parameters during aerosolization of liquids or powders and the role of aerosol flow dynamics in RS. The interaction of deposited particles with the fluid environment of the lung is also pointed out as an important step in the mass transfer of the drug to the RS surface. The analysis presented highlights the technical aspects of preparing the precursors to ensure that the properties of the aerosol are suitable for a given therapeutic target. Analyzing existing technical limitations, several potential strategies for enhancing the efficiency of targeted therapeutic delivery to or through the respiratory system are identified and presented, including the use of smart inhaling devices incorporating AI algorithms.

Computational rhinology is a specialized branch of biomechanics leveraging engineering techniques for mathematical modelling and simulation to complement the medical field of rhinology. Computational rhinology has already contributed significantly to advancing our understanding of the nasal function, including airflow patterns, mucosal cooling, particle deposition, and drug delivery, and is foreseen as a crucial element in e.g. the development of virtual surgery as a clinical, patient-specific decision support tool. The current paper delves into the field of computational rhinology from a nasal airflow perspective, highlighting the use of computational fluid dynamics to enhance diagnostics and treatment of breathing disorders. The paper consists of three distinct parts – an introduction to and review of the field of computational rhinology, a review of published literature on in vitro and in silico studies of nasal airflow, and the presentation and analysis of previously unpublished high fidelity CFD simulation data of in silico rhinomanometry. While the two first parts of the paper summarize the current status and challenges in the application of computational tools in rhinology, the last part addresses the gross disagreement commonly observed when comparing in silico and in vivo rhinomanometry results. It is concluded that this discrepancy cannot readily be explained by CFD model deficiencies caused by poor choice of turbulence model, insufficient spatial or temporal resolution, or neglecting transient effects. Hence, alternative explanations such as nasal cavity compliance or drag effects due to nasal hair should be investigated.

(1) Aim of the study was to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the airflow created by two commercially available non-contact tonometers, the CorvisST and the Ocular Re-sponse Analyser. (2) The airflow pressure was measured using a MEMS pressure sensor to inves-tigate the spatial and temporal distribution. The airflow from the CorvisST and Ocular Response Analyser were mapped to a 600µm and a 1mm resolution grid, respectively. (3) Central airflow pressure of the CorvisST (96.4 ± 1.4)mmHg was higher than the Ocular Response Analyser (91.7 ± 0.7)mmHg. The duration of the air-puffs also differed, with the CorvisST showing a shorter du-ration (21.483 ± 0.2881)ms than the ORA (23.061 ± 0.1872)ms. The rising edge of the CorvisST airflow pressure profile demonstrated a lower gradient (+8.94mmHg/ms) compared to the Oc-ular Response Analyser (+11.00mmHg/ms). Both had similar decay response edges; CorvisST -11.18mmHg/ms, Ocular Response Analyser -11.65mmHg/ms. (4) The study presents a valid method to investigate physical dimensions of the airflow pressure of non-contact tonometers. Novel findings relating to the magnitude, duration and spatial characteristics of the respective airflow pressures are reported. It is anticipated that this information will better inform clinical studies and theoretical models relating to ocular biomechanics.

Background: In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there are two known classifications for assessing what is called disease severity. One is the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) classification, which is based on the post-bronchodilator value of FEV1 (% reference). The other is the STaging of Airflow obstruction by Ratio (STAR). Methods: We reanalyzed data from our outpatient cohort study, which included 141 participants with COPD from 2015 to 2023. We compared mortality and COPD-specific health status between the GOLD 1 to 4 groups and the STAR 1 to 4 groups. Results: By simple calculation, GOLD and STAR severity classes coincided in 75 participants (53.2%). The weighted Bangdiwala B value with linear weights was 0.775. The participants were observed for up to 95 months, with a median of 54 months. Death was confirmed in 29 participants (20.5%). In univariate Cox proportional hazards analyses, there was a significant difference in mortality between the GOLD 1 and GOLD 3+4 groups, with the GOLD 1 group used as the reference [Hazard Ratio 4.222 (95% CI 1.298 - 13.733), p=0.017]. However, there was no statistically significant predictive relationship between STAR 1 and STAR 2, or between STAR 1 and STAR 3+4. The St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) Total and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores were significantly different between all GOLD groups, except for the CAT score between GOLD 1 and GOLD 2. The SGRQ Total and CAT scores were significantly different between STAR 1 and STAR 3+4, but not between STAR 1 and STAR 2. Conclusion: From the perspective of all-cause mortality and COPD-specific health status, the GOLD classification is more discriminative than STAR.
