Building a widely distributed hotspot network is a very tedious task due to its complexity. Providing security, fully distributed network services, and cost-conscious impact are the major challenges behind this goal. To overcome these issues, we have presented a novel distributed hotspot network architecture with five layers that can provide large-scale hotspot coverage as an assimilated result. Our contributions to this new architecture highlight important aspects. First, scalability can be increased by including many Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices with sensors and Wi-Fi and/or LoraWAN connectivity modules. Second, hotspot owners can rent out their hotspots to create a distributed hotspot network in which the hotspots can act as an ordinary data gateway, a full-fledged hotspot miner, and a lightweight hotspot miner to earn crypto tokens as rewards for certain activities. Third, the advantages of Wi-Fi and LoraWAN can be seamlessly leveraged to achieve optimal coverage, higher network security, and suitable data transmission rate for transferring sensor data from IoT devices to remote application servers and users. Fourth, blockchain is used to enhance the decentralized behavior of the architecture presented here by providing immutability and independence from a centralized regulator and making the network architecture more reliable and transparent. The main feature of our paper is the use of the tau-computing paradigm along with hotspots to improve availability, Internet backhaul-agnostic network coverage, and synchronous update capability, and tau-aware leasing to strengthen and improve coverage. We also discuss the key challenges and future roadmap that require further investment and deployment.

Background: Number of investigations, which are focused on arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) biodiversity is still limited. The analysis of AMF taxa in the North Caucasus, a temperate biodiversity hotspot, used to be limited by the genera level. The aim of this study was to define AMF biodiversity at the species level in the North Caucasus biotopes. Methods: Molecular genetic identification of fungi was carried out with ITS1 and ITS2 regions as barcodes, sequencing by Illumina MiSeq, analysis of phylogenetic trees for individual genera, searching the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with identification at the species level. Sequences from MaarjAM and NCBI GenBank were used as references. Results: We analyzed >10 million reads in soil samples for 3 biotopes to estimate fungal biodiversity. 50 AMF species from 20 genera were found. The valley biotopes (disturbed ecosystems, grasslands) were characterized by a greater AMF diversity, as well as the number of OTUs and species, in comparison with the forest biotopes. Conclusion: Our hypothesis is that high AMF biodiversity for the river valley can be associated with a higher percentage of annual plants in these biotopes, as well as with the active development of restorative successional processes.

Family planning (FP) services are crucial interventions for improving maternal and child health outcomes and promoting gender equity. However, ensuring equitable access to these services remains a significant challenge, particularly in countries like Pakistan, where sociocultural norms, economic disparities, and geographic barriers hinder FP uptake. This study utilized spatial analysis techniques, including hotspot analysis, to investigate geographic disparities in FP uptake in Pakistan using data from Pakistan Demographic and Health Surveys (PDHS) conducted between 2006 and 2017. ArcMap 10.1 was used for spatial analysis and Stata 12.0 for statistical analysis. Results revealed significant spatial variations in FP uptake, with urban areas generally exhibiting higher uptake rates than rural regions. Hotspot analysis identified dynamic changes in contraceptive prevalence rates (CPR), with significant clustering in some regions and dispersion in others. It also identified areas with high unmet need and their low intention to use FP services and preference for family size (>3 children), highlighting the need for targeted behavioral change interventions. This innovative spatial approach provides nuanced insights for policymakers and program planners to develop targeted interventions based on localized data to improve FP service delivery, mitigate disparities, and ultimately advance efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes. The application of geospatial analysis is an effective tool for enhancing program planning, evaluation, and resource allocation in diverse geographical contexts.

Heat shock protein 47kDa (HSP47) serves as a client-specific chaperone, essential for collagen biosynthesis and its folding and structural assembly. To date, there is no comprehensive study on mutational hotspots and protein network for human HSP47. Using five different human mutational databases, we deduced a comprehensive list of human HSP47 mutations and we found 24 67, 50, 43 and 2 deleterious mutations from the 1000 genomes data, gnomAD, COSMICv86, cBioPortal, and CanVar. We identified thirteen top-ranked missense mutations of HSP47 with the stringent cut-off of CADD score (>25) and Grantham score (≥151) as Ser76Trp, Arg103Cys, Arg116Cys, Ser159Phe, Arg167Cys, Arg280Cys, Trp293Cys, Gly323Trp, Arg339Cys, Arg373Cys, Arg377Cys, Ser399Phe, and Arg405Cys with the arginine-cysteine change as the predominant mutation. We also found that HSP47 is up-regulated and down-regulated in 11 and 4 of cancers types. Upon constructing protein interactome map of human HSP47, we found that a set of molecular chaperones is interaction partners of HSP47, which included two copies each of CREB binding proteins, HSP27, HSP40, HSP70, HSP90, ubiquitin proteins and one copy each of cartilage associated protein (CRTAP), HSPH1, HSBP1, FK506-binding protein B (FKBP), kruppel-like factor (KLF13), peptidyl-prolyl isomerase PIPB and Prolyl 4-hydroxylase beta subunit (P4HB). This suggested a cocktail of different chaperones interact with HSP47. These findings will assist in the evaluation of roles of HSP47 in human disease including different types of cancers.

Tropical island countries are often highly populated and deliver immense ecosystem service benefits. As human wellbeing depends on these ecosystems proper management is crucial in the resource-rich tropical lands where related research is less. Though the ecosystem service and biodiversity studies are a promising path to inform the ecosystem management for these mostly developing countries published evidence of using ecosystem service studies in decision-making is lacking. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of ecosystem services and related research in Sri Lanka examining trends and gaps and how these studies are conceptualized. Out of considered 139 peer-reviewed articles majority of articles 42.4% were terrestrial and forest related while coastal ecosystems were considered in 34.5% of studies. In most studies, the ecosystem service category was provisioning (33.8%) followed by regulatory service (30.9%). Studies investigating and quantifying ecosystem services, pressures on ecosystems, and their management were fewer compared to studies related to biodiversity or species introduction. Moreover, studies investigating the value of ecosystem services and biodiversity to the communities or involvement of stakeholders in the development of management actions regarding the ecosystem services were rare in Sri Lanka and intense focus of future studies in these aspects are timely and necessary.

Driven by industrialization and urbanization, urban air pollution can increase respiratory, heart, and cerebrovascular diseases, and thus mortality rates; as such, it is necessary to improve air quality through the consideration of individual pollutants and emissions sources. In South Korea, national and local governments have installed urban and roadside air quality monitoring systems. However, stations are lacking outside metropolitan regions, and roadside stations are sparsely distributed, limiting comparisons of pollutant concentrations with vehicle traffic and floating population levels. Local governments have begun using mobile laboratories (MLs) to supplement the fixed measurement network and investigate road pollution source characteristics based on their spatiotemporal distribution; however, the collected data cannot be used effectively if they are not visualized. Here, we propose a method to collect and visualize global information system (GIS)-based air quality data overlayed with environmental variables to support air quality management measures. Spatiotemporal analyses of ML-derived data from Bucheon, Korea, confirmed that particulate and gaseous pollutant concentrations were high during typical commuting hours, at intersections, and at a specially managed road. During commuting hours, the maximum PM10 concentration reached 200.7 µg/m³ in the Nae-dong, Gyeongin-ro, and Ojeong-dong ready-mix concrete complex areas, and the maximum PM_2.5 concentration was 161.7 µg/m³. The maximum NOx, NO₂, and NO levels of 1.34 ppm, 0.18 ppm, and 1.18 ppm, respectively, were also detected during commuting hours. These findings support the need for targeted management of air pollution in this region, and highlight the benefit of comprehensively comparing road levels, driving speed, and traffic levels when identifying hotspots of air pollution. Such analyses will contribute to the development of air quality management measures customized to regional characteristics.

Studies on animal virome have mainly concentrated on chordates and medically significant invertebrates, often overlooking sylvatic mosquitoes, constituting the major part of mosquito species diversity. Despite their potential role in arbovirus transmission, the viromes of sylvatic mosquitoes remain largely unexplored. These mosquitoes may also harbor insect-specific viruses (ISVs), affecting arboviral transmission dynamics. The Cerrado biome, known for rapid deforestation and its status as a biodiversity hotspot, offers an ideal setting for investigating mosquito viromes due to potential zoonotic spillover risks from land use changes. This study aimed to characterize the viromes of sylvatic mosquitoes collected from various locations within Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Total RNA was extracted from mosquito pools of Psorophora albipes, Sabethes albiprivus, Sa. chloropterus, Psorophora ferox, and Coquillettidia venezuelensis species, followed by high-throughput sequencing (HTS). Bioinformatic analysis included quality control, contig assembly, and viral detection. Sequencing data analysis revealed 11 near-complete viral genomes (new viruses are indicated with asterisks) across seven viral families and one unassigned genus. These included: Xinmoviridae (Ferox mosquito mononega-like virus* and Albipes mosquito Gordis-like virus*), Phasmaviridae (Sabethes albiprivus phasmavirus*), Lispiviridae (Pedras lispivirus isolate MG), Iflaviridae (Sabethes albiprivus iflavivirus*), Virgaviridae (Buriti virga-like virus isolate MG and Sabethes albiprivus virgavirus 1*), Flaviviridae (Psorophora ferox flavivirus*), Mesoniviridae (Alphamesonivirus cavallyense isolate MG), and the genus Negevirus (Biggie virus isolate MG virus and Coquillettidia venezuelensis negevirus*). Phylogenetic analyses revealed evolutionary relationships with varying degrees of similarity to known sequences in distinct host species. In some cases, new viruses and potential new genera were discovered, emphasizing the importance of studying sylvatic mosquito virome to understand viral diversity and evolution in ecologically sensitive regions. Moreover, the presence of ISVs and potential novel arboviruses underscores the need for ongoing surveillance and control strategies to mitigate the risk of emerging infectious diseases.

Recently, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been shown to act as precursors of secondary organic particles that react with ultraviolet rays in the atmosphere and contribute to photochemical smog, global warming, odor, and human health risks, highlighting the importance of VOC management. In this study, we measured VOC concentrations in various contexts including industrial and residential areas of Bucheon, Korea, through mobile laboratory and proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry methods to determine winter VOC concentrations, visualized the data based on spatial information, and used the results to develop an air quality management plan. For this purpose, global information system (GIS)-based air quality data and various environmental variables were comprehensively reviewed to assess spatial and temporal concentrations in three dimensions rather than in tables and graphs. Among VOCs, the levels of toluene, methanol, and n+i-butene were relatively high, with average concentrations of 48.3 ± 67.2, 34.4 ± 102.7, and 32.6 ± 57.7 ppb, respectively, at the end of the working day. The highest concentrations occurred near the Ojeong Industrial Complex. Mobile pollution sources are also a major driver of VOCs, highlighting the necessity of comprehensively reviewing traffic variables such as road level, estimated traffic volume, and average speed when identifying hotspots of air pollution. GIS-based visualization analysis techniques will improve the efficiency of air quality management.

Since 2015, community forests have been promoted in Togo as an alternative to protected areas degradation and as a means of contributing to forest landscape restoration. The study focuses on the Nakpadjouak Community Forest (NCF) in Tami (Togo, West Africa) which contributes to community forests sustainable management. It aims in (i) mapping forest ecosystems and analysing their dynamic and (ii) characterizing the floristic diversity of the NCF. The ecosystems were mapped and their dynamic evaluated based on Google Earth images of 2014 and 2020. Floristic and forestry inventories were carried out using the transect technique in a sample of 20 plots of 50 m x 20 m. The NCF was made up mainly by wooded/shrub savannahs (95.37%) and croplands/fallow (4.63%) in 2014. These two land use types undergone changes over the 6 years prior to 2020. By 2020, the NCF had 3 land use types: wooded/shrub savannahs (77.59%), open forest/wooded savannahs (22.23%), and croplands/fallows (0.18%). A total of 89 plant species belonging to 70 genera and 28 families were recorded within the NCF. The dominant species are: Hetopogon contortus (L.) P.Beauv. and Combretum collinum Fresen. followed by Pteleopsis suberosa Engl. & Diels, Annona senegalensis Pers. The most common species are: Lannea acida A.Rich. s.l., A. senegalensis, Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertner subsp. paradoxa, C. collinum and Acacia dudgeonii Craib ex Holland. Due to its small area of just 40 hectares and its diverse plant life, this community forest of Savannahs Region is a significant biodiversity hotspot and warrants conservation efforts.

Sierra Madre Mountain Range (SMMR) is the backbone of Luzon Islands that contains high concentration of highly important ecological resources distributed among the 68 protected areas therewith. The present study aimed to assess the tree species composition and diversity in a secondary forest within the SMMR. A 2.25-km transect with 10 900-m2 was established to record tree species with a diameter at breast height of at least 10 cm. The findings revealed 148 individuals of trees from 38 morphospecies, 28 genera, and 20 families. Importance values unveiled the Aurora endemic Macaranga stonei Whitmore as the most important species in terms of the relative values of its abundance, frequency, and dominance. The area was also found to be home for 33 natives, 12 endemics, five IUCN threatened species, and nine Philippine threatened trees. Furthermore, the study site was also found to have a considerably high diversity with Shannon Weiner Index value of 3.269 and a relatively even distribution of individuals among species supported by the Simpson’s Evenness index value of 0.9453. Significant correlational relationships were also found among species richness, Shannon Weinder index, and Simpson’s Evenness index with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.881 to .934 all significant at p < .001. Lastly, the study was able to produce a distribution map necessary in implementing targeted conservation strategies. These findings provided valuable implications for future research and implementation of targeted and participatory biodiversity conservation and protection strategies.

The clumping index (CI) is a key structural parameter that quantifies the nonrandomness of the spatial distribution of vegetation canopy leaves. Investigating seasonal variations in the CI is crucial, especially for estimating the leaf area index (LAI) and studying global carbon and water cycles. However, accurate estimations of the seasonal CI have substantial challenges, e.g., from the need for accurate hot spot measurements, i.e., the typical feature of the bidirectional reflectance distribution fumnction (BRDF) shape in the current CI algorithm framework. Therefore, deriving a phenologically simplified stable CI product from a high-frequency CI product (e.g., 8 days) to reduce the uncertainty of CI seasonality and simplify CI applications remains important. In this study, we applied the discrete Fourier transform and an improved dynamic threshold method to estimate the start of season (SOS) and end of season (EOS) from the CI time series and indicated that the CI exhibits significant seasonal variation characteristics that are generally consistent with the MODIS land surface phenology (LSP) product (MCD12Q2), although seasonal differences between them probably exist. Second, we divided the vegetation cycle into two phenological stages based on the MODIS LSP product, ignoring the differences mentioned above, i.e., the leaf-on season (LOS, from greenup to dormancy) and the leaf-off season (LFS, after dormancy and before greenup of the next vegetation cycle), and developed the phenologically simplified two-stage CI product using the MODIS 8-day CI product suite. Finally, we assessed the accuracy of this CI product (RMSE = 0.06, bias = 0.01) via 95 datasets from 14 field-measured sites globally. This study revealed that the CI exhibited an approximately inverse trend in terms of phenological variation compared with the NDVI. Globally, based on the phenologically simplified two-stage CI product, the CILOS is smaller than the CILFS across all land cover types. Compared with the LFS stage, the quality for this CI product is better in the LOS stage, where the QA is basically identified as 0 and 1, accounting for more than ~90% of the total quality flag, which is significantly higher than that in the LFS stage (~60%). This study provides relatively reliable CI datasets that capture the general trend of seasonal CI variations and simplify potential applications in modeling ecological, meteorological, and other surface processes at both global and regional scales. Therefore, this study provides both new perspectives and datasets for future research in relation to CI and other biophysical parameters, e.g., the LAI.

Myanmar is located in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, but lacks understanding of the bio-diversity hotspots and protected areas within its borders. Climate change affects the effective-ness of protected areas and the potential distribution range of species. Based on Myanmar's re-gional characteristics, endangered status, and representativeness, this paper selects species and identifies biodiversity hotspots using the MaxEnt model. We studied the biodiversity within the terrestrial protected area network in Myanmar, as well as the potential for cross-boundary range shifts among protected areas under different climate scenarios. Species populations outside My-anmar's protected area network may not be able to find suitable habitats in the future, further exacerbating climate-related extinction risks. Additionally, some protected areas in Myanmar may not be fully utilizing their biodiversity representation potential, and with scientific spatial planning, Myanmar's protected areas could support a large number of species. In the context of continued warming, identifying new protected areas that encompass the future and current climatic niches of protected areas can increase the capacity for sustained biodiversity conservation. We hope that this study provides insights for increasing the effectiveness of Myanmar's protect-ed area network and emphasizes the urgency of coordinated protection of protected areas and biodiversity hotspots.

Conservation of tropical endemic amphibians largely suffers from Wallacean shortfall, a gap to which predictive species distribution models have contributed significantly to bridge by delineating probable distribution and the underlying suitable habitat within their distributional range. However, rarely is a prediction model ground-truthed to evaluate their predictive performance. Here we present a species distribution modeling approach using maximum entropy algorithm corrected for smaller sample size, in guiding explorative surveys aimed at optimizing survey effort and discovering unrecorded populations of Zhangixalus suffry, a rhacophorid tree-frog endemic to the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent along with the factors limiting their distribution. With only 16 established historical locality data to model for (after spatial thinning to reduce autocorrelation) and a set of environmental predictors (climatic, topographic, and landscape composition), our model prediction enabled the successful discovery of seven new population records from unreported landscapes, extending its southernmost distributional limit over a considerable distance. The final composite distribution model combining all the locality records (n=23) predicted similar core areas of suitable habitat consistent with the known geographic distribution of the species but showed poor representation under existing coverage of Protected Area (PA) network in the Region with only 7% representation of suitable habitat under protection. Habitat suitability of a site was significantly governed by factors related to precipitation (precipitation seasonality and precipitation of the warmest quarter) and topographic factors that can influence it (elevation and aspect). This corroborates with the known ecology of Rhacophorid frogs, especially concerning their seasonal explosive reproductive strategy and foam nest-building behavior.Through this study, we propose explorative surveys guided by species distribution models to expedite unknown population discovery of rare, tropical endemic amphibians and using such taxa as surrogates in identifying conservation priority zones that can be directly applied to reserve design and conservation and management planning.

The interaction between different regions normally is reflected by the form of the stream. For example, the interaction of the flow of people and flow of information between different regions can reflect the structure of cities’ network, and also can reflect how the cities function and connect to each other. Since big data has become increasingly popular, it is much easier to acquire flow data for various types of individuals. Currently, it is a hot research topic to apply the regional interaction model, which is based on the summary level of individual flow data mining. So far, previous research on spatial interaction methods focused on point-to-point and area-to-area interaction patterns. However, there are a few scholars who study the hotspot interaction pattern between two regional groups with some predefined neighborhood relationship by starting with two regions. In this paper, a method for identifying a similar hotspot interaction pattern between two regional groups has been proposed, and the Geo-Information-Tupu methods are applied to visualize the interaction patterns. For an example of an empirical analysis, we discuss China’s air traffic flow data, so this method can be used to find and analyze any hotspot interaction patterns between regional groups with adjoining relationships across China. Our research results indicate that this method is efficient in identifying hotspot interaction flow patterns between regional groups. Moreover, it can be applied to any analysis of flow space that is used to excavate regional group hotspot interaction patterns.

In this paper, we investigated transducer placement strategies for detecting crack in primary aircraft structures using ultrasonic Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The approach developed is for an expected damage location based on fracture mechanics, for example fatigue crack growth in a high stress location. To assess the performance of the developed approach, finite-element (FE) modelling of a damage tolerant aluminum fuselage has been performed by introducing an artificial crack at a rivet hole into the structural FE model and assessing its influence on the Lamb wave propagation, compared to a baseline measurement simulation. The efficient practical sensor position was determined from the largest change in area that is covered by reflected and missing wave scatter using an additive color model. Blob detection algorithms were employed in order to determine the boundaries of this area and to calculate the blob centroid. To demonstrate that the technique can be generalized, the results from different crack lengths and from tilted crack are also presented.

PitNETs, although typically benign, comprise a small percentage of therapy-resistant aggressive, occasionally metastatic tumors, underpinning a need to identify novel therapeutic targets. PitNETs carry few mutations but associate with conditions that promote alternative splicing as an oncogenic alternative and express the TrkA neurotrophin receptor, which exhibits oncogenic alternative TrkAIII splicing in other tumors. Alternative TrkAIII splicing was assessed by RT-PCR in 53 PitNETs and compared to HIF1a, HIF2a, SF3B1, SRSF2, U2AF1 and JCPyV large T antigen mRNA expression, unconventional Xbp1 splicing, SF3B1 mutation, and TrkA isoform(s) immunoreactivity by confocal immunofluorescence (IF). Alternative TrkAIII mRNA splicing was detected in all invasive PitNET phenotypes, was significantly elevated in invasive compared to non-invasive PIT1 PitNETs, relatively high in invasive and non-invasive SF1 and TPIT PitNETs, and was associated with IF consistent with intracellular TrkAIII activation but not with hotspot SF3B1 mutations, altered SF3B1, SRSF2 and U2AF1 splice factor mRNA expression, JCPyV large T antigen expression or unconventional Xbp1 splicing. A potential role for hypoxia in TrkAIII mRNA splicing was supported by significant elevation of HIF2a mRNA expression in invasive PIT1 PitNETs. These data demonstrate that alternative TrkAIII splicing, potentially promoted by hypoxia, occurs frequently in PitNETs and may associate with IF consistent with intracellular TrkAIII activation, supporting a potential role for TrkAIII in PitNET pathogenesis and progression, identifying TrkAIII as a novel potential target in refractory PitNETs.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is commonly used for super-selective analysis through nanostructured silver layers in the environment, food quality, biomedicine, and materials science. To fabricate a high-sensitivity but more accessible device of SERS, dc magnetron sputtering technology was used to realize high sensitivity, low cost, stable deposition rate, and rapid mass production. This study investigated various thicknesses of a silver film ranging from 3.0 to 12.1 nm by field-emission-scanning-electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the rhodamine 6G (R6G) testing irradiated by a He-Ne laser beam, the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of 9.35x108, the limit of detection (LOD) of 10-8 M, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.61% were better than other SERS substrates fabricated by the same dc sputtering process because the results show that the 6 nm thickness silver layer has the highest sensitivity, stability, and lifetime. The paraquat and acetylcholine analytes were further investigated and high sensitivity was also achievable. The proposed SERS samples were evaluated and stored in a low humidity environment for up to forty weeks, and no spectrum attenuation could be detected. Soon, the proposed technology to fabricate high sensitivity, repeatability, and robust SERS substrate will be an optimized process technology in multiple applications.
