This article focuses on generating an alternative in order to identify traffic officers during driving. This research employed the latest You Only Look Once (YOLO) model, using a six-phase methodology: data collection, data preparation involving resizing and labeling, implementation of various filters to avoid overfitting, model training, prediction evaluation, and result interpretation. The YOLO model was applied across three iterations using a dataset of 1862 images. To enhance training efficiency and detection speed, the graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration was utilized, further enhancing the experimental process. The results of this study revealed that the YOLOv8x variant produced the most promising results. This proposed model attained a remarkable F1 score of 0.95, bolstered by a confidence score of 0.631, with the potential for an increase to 0.80 in confidence without significantly compromising the F1-score. These findings are poised to make a substantial contribution to the broader research landscape, particularly in advancing the effectiveness of detection models for traffic officers.

Real time camouflaged object detection so far using CAMO or COD10K datset has been able to achieve mAP50 less than 64%. We present a fourier transfom and Milkyway filament extraction based method extracting shape and edges of camouflaged object, achieving 88%+ mAP50 while continuing to deliver real time detection using YOLOv8s based models. This allows for search and rescue of wilelife and humans in smoke, fog, natural disasters possible by combining low compute Yolov8s model on headup display for rescue workers such as firefighters, first reponders etc.

Strip steel surface defect recognition research has important research significance in industrial production. Aiming at the problems of defect feature extraction difficulty, slow detection speed and insufficient dataset, YOLOv5 is improved on the basis of YOLOv5, and YOLO-LFPD (Lightweight fine particle detection) model is proposed. By introducing the RepVGG (Re-param VGG) module, the robustness of the model to the surface defect features of strip steel is enhanced, and the expressive ability of the model is improved. FasterNet is used to replace the backbone network, which ensures the accuracy and accelerates the inference speed, making the model more suitable for real-time monitoring. The use of pruning, GA genetic algorithm with OTA loss function method further reduces the model size while better learning the strip steel defect feature information, thus improving the generalisation ability and accuracy of the model. The experimental results show that the introduction of the RepVGG module and the use of FasterNet can well improve the model performance, with a reduction of 48% in the number of parameters, a reduction of 13% in the number of GFLOPs, an inference time of 77% of the original, and an optimal accuracy compared with the network models in recent years. The experimental results on the NEU-DET dataset show that the accuracy of YOLO-LFPD is improved by 3% to 81.2%, which is better than other models, and provides new ideas and references for the lightweight strip steel surface defect detection scenarios and application deployment.

Automating pruning tasks entails overcoming several challenges, encompassing not only robotic manipulation but also environment perception and detection. To achieve efficient pruning, robotic systems must accurately identify the correct cutting points. A possible method to define these points is to choose the cutting location based on the number of nodes present on the targeted cane. For this purpose, in grapevine pruning, it is required to correctly identify the nodes present on the primary canes of the grapevines. In this paper, a novel method of node detection in grapevines is proposed with four distinct state-of-the-art versions of the YOLO detection model: YOLOv7, YOLOv8, YOLOv9 and YOLOv10. These models were trained on a public dataset with images containing artificial backgrounds and afterwards validated on different cultivars of grapevines from two distinct Portuguese viticulture regions with cluttered backgrounds. This allowed to evaluate the robustness of the algorithms on the detection of nodes in diverse environments, compare the performance of the YOLO models used, as well as create a publicly available dataset of grapevines obtained in Portuguese vineyards for node detection. Overall, all used models were capable of achieving correct node detection on images of grapevines from the three distinct datasets. Considering the trade-off between accuracy and inference speed, the YOLOv7 model demonstrated to be the most robust in detecting nodes in 2D images of grapevines, achieving F1-Score values between 70 % and 86.5 % with inference times of around 89 ms for an input size of 1280×1280 px. Considering these results, this work contributes with an efficient approach for real-time node detection for further implementation on an autonomous robotic pruning system.

With the rapid development of space programs in various countries, the number of satellites in space is increasing, resulting in an increasingly complex space environment. Therefore, improving space object identification technology has become highly important. We proposes a method of applying deep learning to intelligent detection of space object. We utilize 49 authentic 3D satellite models including 16 scenarios to generate a dataset comprising 17,942 images, which contains over 500 actual satellite photos. Additionally, we acquired a substantial amount of annotated data using a semi-automatic labeling method, which resulted in significant labor cost savings, and obtained a total of 39,000 labels. We validate the feasibility of the dataset using YOLOv3 and YOLOv7 models. What's more, we optimize the YOLOv7 model by integrating deformable convolution RepPoint into the YOLOv7 backbone to obtain the YOLOv7-R model. Through training with these two models, experimental results show that YOLOv3 achieves an accuracy of 0.927, YOLOv7 reaches an accuracy of 0.964, and YOLOv7-R achieves the highest accuracy at 0.983. This provides an effective solution for intelligent space object detection.

In traffic scene, pedestrian target detection faces significant issues of misdetection and omission due to factors such as crowd density and obstacle occlusion. To address these challenges and enhance detection accuracy, we propose an improved CCW-YOLO algorithm. The algorithm first introduces a lightweight convolutional layer using GhostConv and incorporates an enhanced C2f module to improve the network's detection performance. Additionally, it integrates the Coordinate Attention module to better capture key points of the targets. Next, the bounding box loss function CIoU Loss at the output of YOLOv5 is replaced with WiseIoU Loss to enhance adaptability to various detection scenarios, thereby further improving accuracy. Finally, we develop a pedestrian count detection system by using PyQt5 to enhance human-computer interaction. Experimental results on the INRIA public dataset show that our algorithm achieves a detection accuracy of 95.6%, representing a 8.7% improvement over the original YOLOv5s algorithm. This advancement significantly enhances the detection of small objects in images and effectively addresses misdetection and omission issues in complex environments. These findings have important practical implications for ensuring traffic safety and optimizing traffic flow.

Detecting people and technical objects in various situations, such as natural disasters and warfare, is critical to search and rescue operations and the safety of the civilian. A fast and accurate detection for people and equipment can significantly increase the effectiveness of search and rescue missions and provide timely assistance to people. Computer vision and deep learning technologies play a key role in detecting the required objects due to their ability to analyse big volumes of visual data in real time. The performance of the neural networks such as YOLOv4-v8, Faster R-CNN, SSD, and EfficientDet has been analysed using COCO2017, SARD, SeaDronesSee, and VisDrone2019 datasets. Main criteria for comparison were mAP, Precision, Recall, F1-Score, and the ability of the neural network to work in real time. The most important metrics for evaluating the efficiency and performance of models for a given task are accuracy (mAP), F1-Score, and processing speed (FPS). These metrics allow us to evaluate both the accuracy of object recognition and the ability to use the models in real-world environments where high processing speed is important. Although different neural networks perform better on certain types of metrics, YOLO outperforms them on all metrics, showing the best results of mAP-0.88, F1 - 0.88, and FPS - 48, so the focus was on these models.

Gastrointestinal (GI) tract disorders, ranging from benign polyps to aggressive forms of cancer, pose significant health challenges globally. Early detection and precise classification of these conditions are crucial for effective treatment and improving patient survival rates. This study employs the Hyper-Kvasir dataset, a comprehensive collection of endoscopic images, to develop deep learning models that harness the power of the YOLO (You Only Look Once) architecture for real-time detection and classification of GI abnormalities. The focus is on overcoming inherent challenges such as class imbalance and limited annotated data availability. Advanced machine learning strategies, including data augmentation and semi-supervised learning, are utilized to enhance the model's performance. Our experiments demonstrate notable improvements in the detection of pre-cancerous lesions and other GI abnormalities, confirming the potential of integrating AI into endoscopic practices to support clinicians, reduce diagnostic errors, and contribute to more accurate and timely diagnoses. The implications of these findings are significant, offering a pathway to more reliable diagnostic processes and ultimately, better patient management in gastroenterology.

Aiming at the problem of small size of some spots on apple leaves and the difficulty of accurate detection of spot targets brought by the complex background of the orchard, this paper takes the alternaria leaf spot, rust, brown spot, grey spot and frog eye leaf spot on apple leaves as the research object, and proposes a high-accuracy detection model YOLOv5-Res and lightweight detection model YOLOv5-Res4 are proposed. Firstly, a multiscale feature extraction module ResBlock is designed by combining the Inception multi-branch structure and ResNet residual idea. Secondly, a lightweight feature fusion module C4 is designed to reduce the number of model parameters while improving the detection ability of small targets. Finally, a parameter streamlining strategy based on optimized model architecture is proposed. The experimental results show that the performance of YOLOv5-Res model and YOLOv5-Res4 model is significantly improved, the mAP@0.5 value is improved by 2.8% and 2.2% compared with YOLOv5s model and YOLOv5n model, respectively, and the size of YOLOv5-Res model and YOLOv5-Res4 model is only 10.8MB and 2.4MB, and the number of model parameters is reduced compared with YOLOv5s model and YOLOv5n model. counts are reduced by 22% and 38.3% compared to the YOLOv5s model and YOLOv5n model.

Camouflage evaluation typically involves human visual search and detection experiments that are time-consuming and expensive. Hence, there is a need for models that compute camouflage effectiveness from digital imagery. Convolutional neural networks are a powerful tool for automatic object detection and recognition. We investigated whether such a network (YOLO) can also provide a measure of camouflage effectiveness that is related to human perception. To this end, human performance measures of camouflage effectiveness such as detection time and target conspicuity were obtained in observer experiments and compared with the performance of the (standard, i.e. pre-trained) YOLO-V4-tiny algorithm. YOLO provides the probability that a detected object is correctly classified, and this is adopted as our measure of camouflage effectiveness. We compared the YOLO-predicted classification probability for a person in camouflage clothing moving through rural and urban scenes to human detection performance. Overall, camouflage effectiveness predicted by YOLO correlates with human observer performance. At close distances, YOLO’s classification performance appears sensitive to high-contrast shape-breaking elements of a camouflage pattern. This suggests that YOLO may be adapted to assess camouflage effectiveness for a wide range of applications, such as evaluating or optimizing one’s signature and predicting optimal hiding locations in a given environment. Further research is required to fully establish YOLO’s limitations and applicability for this purpose.

The relative position of the orchard robot to the rows of fruit trees is an important parameter for achieving autonomous navigations. The current methods for estimating the position parameters between rows of orchard robots obtain low parameter accuracy, and to address this problem, this paper proposes a machine vision-based method for detecting the relative position of orchard robots and fruit tree rows. Firstly, the fruit tree trunk is identified based on the improved YOLOv4 model; secondly, the camera coordinates of the tree trunk are calculated from the principle of binocular camera triangulation, and the ground projection coordinates of the tree trunk are obtained through coordinate conversion; finally, the midpoints of the projection coordinates of different sides are combined and the navigation path is obtained by linear fitting with the least squares method, and the position parameters of the orchard robot are obtained through calculation. The experimental results show that the average accuracy and average recall of the improved YOLOv4 model for fruit tree trunk detection are 97.05% and 95.42%, respectively, which are 5.92 and 7.91 percentage points higher than those of the original YOLOv4 model. The average errors of heading angle and lateral deviation estimates obtained based on the method in this paper are 0.57° and 0.02 m. The method can accurately calculate heading angle and lateral deviation values at different positions between rows, and can provide a reference for autonomous visual navigation of orchard robots.

Construction projects' unsatisfactory performance has been linked to factors influencing individuals' well-being and mental alertness on projects. Drowsiness is a significant indicator of sleep deprivation and fatigue, being able to identify the cognitive and physical preparedness of workers on site to engage in construction tasks. As a consequence of the strenuous nature of the work involved in construction, long work hours, and environmental conditions, drowsiness is commonplace and has received less attention despite being a leading cause of accidents occurring on-site. Detecting drowsiness is essential for determining the safety and well-being of site workers. This study presents a vision-based approach using an improved version of the You Only Look Once (YOLOv8) algorithm for real-time drowsiness exposure among construction workers. The proposed method leverages computer vision techniques to analyse facial and eye features, enabling early detection of drowsiness signs, effectively preventing accidents, and enhancing on-site safety. The model showed significant precision and efficiency in detecting drowsiness from the given dataset, accomplishing a drowsiness class with a mean average precision (mAP) of 92%. However, it also exhibited difficulties handling imbalanced classes, particularly the underrepresented 'Awake with PPE' class, which was detected with high precision but comparatively lower recall and mAP. This highlighted the necessity of balanced datasets for optimal deep learning performance. The YOLOv8 model's average mAP of 78% in drowsiness detection compared favourably with other studies employing different methodologies. The vision-based drowsiness detection system has broad applications in the construction industry. It can be integrated into existing safety protocols, enabling real-time alerts to supervisors or workers when drowsiness is detected. The system improves productivity and reduces costs by preventing accidents and enhancing worker safety. However, limitations, such as sensitivity to lighting conditions and occlusions, must be addressed in future iterations.

The metaverse is gradually expanding. There is a growing number of photo and video recordings of metaverse virtual worlds being used in multiple domains, with growing collections. An essential element of the metaverse and its recordings are avatars. In this paper, we present a novel task of avatar detection in metaverse recordings, supporting semantic retrieval in collections of metaverse recordings and other use cases. Our work addresses the characterizations and definitions of avatars and presents a new model supporting avatar detection. The latest object detection algorithms are trained and tested on a variety of avatar types in metaverse recordings. Our work achieves a higher level of accuracy than existing models, which encourages further research in this field.

The detection accuracy of bridge superficial defect using the deep neural network approach decreases significantly under light variation and weak texture condition. To address these issues, an enhanced intelligent detection method based on the YOLOv8 deep neural network is proposed in this study. Firstly, multi-branch coordinate attention (MBCA) is proposed to improve the accuracy of coordinate positioning by introducing a global perception module in coordinate attention mechanism. Furthermore, a deformable convolution based on MBCA is developed to improve the adaptability for complex feature shapes. Lastly, the deformable convolutional network-attention-YOLO (DAC-YOLO) detection algorithm is formed by replacing the deep C2F structure in the YOLOv8 architecture with deformable convolution. A supervised dataset consisting of 4794 bridge surface damage images is employed to verify the proposed method, and results show that it achieves improvements of 2.0% and 3.4% in mAP and R. Meanwhile, the model complexity decreases by 1.2G, increasing the detection speed by 3.5/f·s-1.

Object detection systems are widely used in various fields such as autonomous vehicles and facial recognition. In particular, object detection using deep learning networks enables real-time processing in low-performance edge devices, and can maintain high detection rates. However, edge devices that operate far from administrators are vulnerable to various physical attacks by malicious adversaries. In this paper, we implement a function for detecting traffic signs by using three versions of You Only Look Once (YOLO) and Faster-RCNN, which can be adopted by edge devices of autonomous vehicles. Then, assuming the role of a malicious attacker, we executed adversarial patch attacks with Adv-Patch and Dpatch. As a result of experimenting with misdetection of traffic stop signs using Adv-Patch and Dpatch, we confirmed the attacks can succeed with a high probability. To defeat these attacks, we propose an image reconstruction method using an autoencoder and the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM). We confirm that the proposed method can sufficiently defend against an attack, attaining an AP above 91.46% even when two adversarial attacks are launched.

The agricultural industry places a high priority on crop protection, especially when it comes to protecting cotton crops against pink bollworm infestations. Rapid disease identification is essential for effective crop management at the same time. In order to overcome these difficulties, this study offers a thorough process for utilizing the Robot Operating System (ROS) to deploy an autonomous robot. The robot is intended to identify infestations of pink bollworm in addition to counting and tracking red Disease that impact cotton harvests. Drones are used to check the condition of cotton fields, and the autonomous robot's path planning component is closely related to this process. Large fields are photographed by these drones in multispectral mode, and the robot's course planning technique is done by calculating the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based on these images. This approach ensures targeted surveillance and intervention, optimizing the use of resources. A customized dataset was created especially for this application to improve the robot's detecting abilities. The dataset was utilized to train a YOLOV8 model, a state-of-the-art object detection architecture. Performance characteristics of the trained model are impressive; it has a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 67.1%, Precision of 67.9%, and Recall of 61.8%. These metrics highlight how well the model works to precisely locate and measure interesting occurrences in the cotton fields. In order to address the particular challenges presented by pink bollworm infestations and crop diseases in the context of cotton cultivation, this research contributes a comprehensive solution for autonomous crop monitoring and protection by seamlessly integrating ROS, drones, NDVI calculations, and a robust detection model.

Abstract: For the problem of small target of printed circuit board surface defects and low detection accuracy, the printed circuit board surface defect detection network DCR-YOLO is designed to meet the premise of real-time detection speed and effectively improve the detection accuracy. Firstly, the backbone feature extraction network DCR-backbone, consisting of two CR residual blocks and one common residual block, is used for small target defect extraction on printed circuit boards. Secondly, the SDDT-FPN feature fusion module is responsible for the fusion of high level features to low level features, while enhancing feature fusion for the feature fusion layer where the small target prediction head YOLO Head-P3 is located to further enhance the low level feature representation. the PCR module enhances the feature fusion mechanism between the backbone feature extraction network and the SDDT-FPN feature fusion module at different scales of feature layers. the C5ECA module is responsible for adaptive adjustment of feature weights and adaptive attention to the requirements of small target defect information, further enhancing the adaptive feature extraction capability of the feature fusion module. Finally, three YOLO-Heads are responsible for predicting small target defects for different scales. Experiments show that the DCR-YOLO network model detection Map reaches 98.58%, the model size is 7.73MB, which meets the lightweight requirement, and the detection speed reaches 103.15fps, which meets the application requirements for real-time detection of small target defects.

Surface defect detection is a crucial step in the process of automotive wheel production. However, the task possesses challenges due to complex background and a wide range of defect types. In order to detect the defects on the wheel surface accurately and quickly, this paper proposes a YOLOv5-based algorithm for automotive wheel surface defect detection. The algorithm trains and tests the YOLOv5s model using the self-created automotive wheel surface defect dataset, which contains four kinds of defects: linear, dotted, sludge, pinhole. The extensive experimental results demonstrate that the deep learning network trained by our method can achieve an average accuracy of 71.7% and 57.14 FPS. Our findings prove that this detection algorithm performs better than other common target detection algorithms and meets the real-time requirements of industrial applications.

Traffic sign detection plays a pivotal role in autonomous driving systems. The intricacy of the detection model necessitates high-performance hardware. Real-world traffic environments exhibit considerable variability and diversity, posing challenges for effective feature extraction by the model. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a detection model that is not only highly accurate but also lightweight. In this paper, we proposed YOLO-ADual, a novel lightweight model. Our method leverages the C3Dual and Adown lightweight modules as replacements for CPS and CBL modules in YOLOv5. The Adown module effectively mitigates feature loss during downsampling while reducing computational costs. Meanwhile, C3Dual optimizes the processing power for kernel feature extraction, enhancing computation efficiency while preserving network depth and feature extraction capability. Furthermore, the inclusion of the CBAM module enables the network to focus on salient information within the image, thus augmenting its feature representation capability. Our proposed algorithm achieves a mAP@0.5 of 70.1% while significantly reducing the number of parameters and computational requirements to 51.83% and 64.73% of the original model, respectively. Compared to various lightweight models, our approach demonstrates competitive performance in terms of both computational efficiency and accuracy.

Accurate segmentation of the Left Ventricle (LV) in Echocardiogram (Echo) images is essential for cardiovascular analysis. Conventional techniques are labor-intensive and exhibit inter-observer variability. Deep learning has emerged as a powerful tool for automated medical image segmentation, offering advantages in speed and potentially superior accuracy. This study explores the efficacy of employing the YOLO (You Only Look Once) segmentation model for automated LV segmentation in Echo images. YOLO, a cutting-edge object detection model, achieves exceptional speed-accuracy balance through its well-designed architecture. It utilizes efficient dilated convolutional layers and bottleneck blocks for feature extraction, while incorporating innovations like path aggregation and spatial attention mechanisms. These attributes make YOLO a compelling candidate for adaptation to LV segmentation in Echo images. We posit that by fine-tuning a pre-trained YOLO based model on a well-annotated Echo image dataset, we can leverage the model's strengths in real-time processing and precise object localization to achieve robust LV segmentation. The proposed approach entails fine-tuning a pre-trained YOLO model on a rigorously labeled Echo image dataset. Model performance has been evaluated using established metrics such as mean Average Precision (mAP) at an Intersection over Union (IoU) threshold of 50% (mAP50) with 98.31%and across a range of IoU thresholds from 50% to 95% (mAP50:95) with 75.27%. Successful implementation of YOLO for LV segmentation has the potential to significantly expedite and standardize Echo image analysis. This advancement could translate to improved clinical decision-making and enhanced patient care.

In this paper we develop and explore a methodical pipeline for swimmer localisation in outdoor environments. The developed framework is intended to be used for enhancing swimmer safety. A main issue we deal with by the proposed approach is the lack of real world training data in such outdoor environments. Natural lighting changes, dynamic water textures and possibly barely visible swimming persons are key elements to approach. We account for these difficulties by adopting an effective background removal technique with available training data. This allows us to edit swimmers into natural environment backgrounds for the use in subsequent image augmentation. We created 17 training datasets with real images, synthetic images and a mixture of both to investigate different aspects and characteristics of the proposed approach. The datasets are used to train a YOLO architecture for the possible future application in real-time detection. The trained framework is then tested and evaluated on outdoor environment imagery acquired by a safety drone to investigate and confirm the usefulness for outdoor swimmer localisation.

In areas where conventional fundus cameras are logistically unaffordable, the smartphone-based approach is considered as a promising future of glaucoma screening due to their affordability and ease-of-use. Optic disc localization is a critical stage during glaucoma screenings. For fundus images captured with standard fundus cameras, the majority of the models available out there can locate the optic disc with satisfactory performance. However, for images that are captured with smartphone-based fundus cameras, the inherent noise and lower quality of the fundus image makes it difficult for models to detect the optic disc region. In this study, we have proposed to utilize YOLOv8n for optic disc localization due to the model’s cutting-edge performance in diverse tasks and its lightweight nature. We have used a public dataset which has 2000 low quality fundus images that are captured using a smartphone-based fundoscopy device. From these, 60% of the data was used for fine-tuning the model, and 25% for testing. By using a confidence of 50% set as threshold, the model was able to detect the optic disc successfully on over 97% of test images with intersection over union of above 0.85. These results highlight the potential of the lightweight YOLOv8n model for deployment on resource-constrained environments, offering a promising performance on accurately localizing the OD and enhancing the feasibility of affordable glaucoma screening on smartphones.

Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Deep Learning (DL), and computer vision have revolutionized various industrial processes through image classification and object detection. State-of-the-art Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Object Detection (OD) technologies, such as YOLO and PaddleOCR, have emerged as powerful solutions for addressing challenges in recognizing textual and non-textual information on printed stickers. However, a well-established framework integrating these cutting-edge technologies for industrial applications still needs to be discovered. In this paper, we propose an innovative framework that combines advanced OCR and OD techniques to automate visual inspection processes in an industrial context. Our primary contribution is a comprehensive framework adept at detecting and recognizing textual and non-textual information on printed stickers within a company, harnessing the latest AI tools and technologies for sticker information recognition. Our experiments reveal an overall macro accuracy of 0.88 for the sticker OCR across three distinct patterns. Furthermore, the proposed system goes beyond traditional Printed Character Recognition (PCR) by extracting supplementary information, such as barcodes and QR codes present in the image, significantly streamlining industrial workflows and minimizing manual labor demands.

In this study, we aim to enhance the accuracy of product quality inspection and counting in the manufacturing process by integrating image processing and human body detection algorithms. We employed the SIFT algorithm combined with traditional image comparison metrics such as SSIM, PSNR, and MSE to develop a defect detection system that is robust against variations in rotation and scale. Additionally, the YOLO v8 Pose algorithm was used to detect and correct errors in product counting caused by human interference on the load cell in real-time. By applying the image differencing technique, we accurately calculated the unit weight of products and determined their total count. In our experiments conducted on products weighing over 1kg, we achieved a high accuracy of 99.268%. The integration of our algorithms with the load cell-based counting system demonstrates reliable real-time quality inspection and automated counting in manufacturing environments.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) framework, a transformative one-stage object detection algorithm renowned for its remarkable balance between speed and accuracy. Since its inception, YOLO has evolved significantly, with versions spanning from YOLOv1 to the most recent YOLOv11, each introducing pivotal innovations in feature extraction, bounding box prediction, and optimization techniques. These advancements, particularly in the backbone, neck, and head components, have positioned YOLO as a leading solution for real-time object detection across a variety of domains. In this review, we explore YOLO's diverse applications, including its critical role in medical imaging for COVID-19 detection, breast cancer identification, and tumor localization, where it has significantly enhanced diagnostic efficiency. YOLO's robust performance in autonomous vehicles is also highlighted, as it excels in challenging conditions like fog, rain, and low-light environments, thereby contributing to improved road safety and autonomous driving systems. In the agricultural sector, YOLO has transformed precision farming by enabling early detection of pests, diseases, and crop health issues, promoting more sustainable farming practices. Additionally, we provide an in-depth performance analysis of YOLO models—such as YOLOv9, YOLO-NAS, YOLOv10, and YOLOv11—across multiple benchmark datasets. This analysis compares their suitability for a range of applications, from lightweight embedded systems to high-resolution, complex object detection tasks. The paper also addresses YOLO's challenges, such as occlusion, small object detection, and dataset biases, while discussing recent advancements that aim to mitigate these limitations. Moreover, we examine the ethical implications of YOLO's deployment, particularly in surveillance and monitoring applications, raising concerns about privacy, algorithmic biases, and the potential to perpetuate societal inequities. These ethical considerations are critical in domains like law enforcement, where biased object detection models can have serious repercussions. Moving object detection plays a crucial role in various applications, particularly in traffic surveillance and collision warning systems. However, the high cost of training and slow detection pose significant challenges to the practicality and real-time performance of existing methods. These challenges hinder the practicality and real-time performance of existing methods. The need for a reliable and efficient moving object detection system prompts the search for cost-effective strategies. Enhancing detection speed without sacrificing accuracy is crucial for real-time applications. Overcoming these challenges is essential to advance the field of moving object detection and improve its applicability in various domains. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the literature on moving object detection, proposes novel strategies to overcome the challenges of high training costs and slow detection. The study emphasizes the importance of reliable speed monitoring systems and advancements in control systems to enhance driver assistance on urban highways. Each frame in the dataset undergoes YOLOv6 processing to detect and classify objects, generating bounding box predictions and class probabilities. Optical flow, specifically the Lucas-Kanade method, is then utilized to compute motion vectors between consecutive frames. These motion vectors facilitate object tracking across frames, enabling refined bounding box positions and improving overall object tracking accuracy. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique in reducing training costs, improving detection speed, and maintaining a high level of accuracy when compared to existing methods. The paper concludes by summarizing the findings and highlighting the potential of the proposed strategy for precise and reliable moving object recognition in real-world traffic scenarios

Cancer is a condition in which the body's cells proliferate unchecked. Skin cancer is one of the deadliest diseases that impacts the skin on many levels. There are several different types of the disease, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanocytic nevus. Due to its increased prevalence, skin cancer, in particular melanoma, is be-coming a serious health problem. Early identification of skin lesions is crucial for successful treatment. Due to their resemblance, many skin lesions are misclassified, which is a severe issue. Researchers seek computer-aided diagnostic tools for early malignant tumor detection. First, a new model based on the combination of "you only look once" (YOLOv5) and "ResNet50" is proposed for melanoma detection with its degree using humans against a machine with 10,000 training images (HAM10000). Second, feature maps integrate gradient change, which allows rapid inference, boosts precision, and reduces the number of hyperparameters in the model, making it smaller. Finally, to get the desired outcomes, the current YOLOv5 model is changed by adding new classes for dermatoscopic images of typical lesions with pigmented skin. The pro-posed approach improves melanoma detection with a real-time speed of 0.4 ms non-maximum suppression (NMS) per image. The performance metrics average is 99.0%, 98.6%, 98.8%, 99.5, 98.3%, and 98.7% for precision, recall, dice similarity coefficient (DSC), accuracy, mean average precision (MAP) from 0.0 to 0.5, and MAP from 0.5 to 0.95, respectively. Compared to cur-rent melanoma detection approaches, the provided approach is more efficient using deep fea-tures.

Ship detection using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been extensively utilized in both the military and civilian fields. On account of complex backgrounds, large scale variations, small-scale targets, and other challenges, it is difficult for current SAR ship detection methods to strike a balance between detection accuracy and computation efficiency. To overcome those challenges, ESarDet, an efficient SAR ship detection method based on context information and large effective receptive field (ERF) is proposed. We introduce the anchor-free object detection method YOLOX-tiny as a baseline model and make several improvements on it. First, the CAA-Net, which has a large ERF, is proposed to better merge the context and semantic information of ships in SAR images to improve ship detection, particularly for small-scale ships with complex backgrounds. Further, to prevent the loss of semantic information regarding ship targets in SAR images, we redesign a new spatial pyramid pooling network, namely A2SPPF. Finally, in consideration of the challenge posed by the large variation in ship scale in SAR images, we design a novel convolution block, called A2CSPlayer, to enhance the fusion of feature maps from different scales. Extensive experiments are conducted on three publicly available SAR ship datasets, DSSDD, SSDD, and HRSID, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed ESarDet. The experimental results demonstrate that ESarDet has distinct advantages over current state-of-the-art (SOTA) detectors in terms of detection accuracy, generalization capability, computational complexity, and detection speed.

You Only Look One (YOLO) and its variants have emerged as the most popular real-time object detection algorithms. They have been widely used in real-time smart transportation applications due to their low-latency detection and high accuracy. However, because of the diverse characteristics of YOLO models, choosing selecting the optimal model according to various applications and environments in smart transportation is critical. In this article, we conduct an empirical evaluation and analysis study for most YOLO versions to assess their performance in smart transportation. To achieve this, we first measure the average precision of YOLO models across multiple datasets (e.g., COCO, PASCAL VOC). Second, we analyze the performance of YOLO models on multiple object categories within each dataset, focusing on classes relevant to road transportation such as those commonly used in smart transportation applications. Third, multiple intersection-over-union (IoU) thresholds are considered in our performance measurement and analysis. By examining the performance of various YOLO models across datasets, IoU thresholds, and object classes, we make six observations on these three aspects while aiming to identify optimal models for road transportation scenarios. Thus, YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 outperform other models in all three aspects due to their novel performance features. For instance, YOLOv5 achieves stable performance thanks to its cross-stage partial darknet-53 (CSPDarknet53) backbone, auto-anchor mechanism, and efficient loss functions including IoU loss, complete IoU loss, focal loss, gradient harmonizing mechanism loss. Similarly, YOLOv8 outperforms others with its upgraded CSPDarknet53 backbone, anchor-free mechanism, and efficient loss functions like complete IoU loss and distribution focal loss.

With the increasing demand for security surveillance, assisted driving, and remote sensing, target detection networks with rich environmental perception capabilities and high detection accuracy have become a research hotspot. However, detection techniques based on single-modality images face limitations in environmental adaptability, as they are easily affected by lighting conditions, as well as obstacles such as smoke, rain, and vegetation, leading to information loss and failing to meet the required accuracy. To address these issues, we propose a target detection network—IV-YOLO, which integrates features from both visible and infrared images. We built a dual-branch fusion network based on YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once v8) that combines infrared and visible images for target detection. On this foundation, we designed a Bidirectional Pyramid Feature Fusion structure (Bi-Fusion) to fully integrate complementary features from different modalities, reducing detection errors caused by feature redundancy and extracting fine-grained features of small targets through dual-modal fusion. Additionally, we developed the Shuffle-SPP structure, which combines channel and spatial attention mechanisms to enhance focus on deep features and further aggregate upsampling, extracting richer features. To improve the model’s expressive power, we designed a loss function tailored for multi-scale target detection boxes, accelerating the network’s convergence during training. Experimental results show that the proposed IV-YOLO network achieves an average precision (mAP) of 74.6% on the UAV remote sensing dataset, 75.4% on the KAIST pedestrian dataset, and 84.8% on the FLIR dataset. While ensuring detection accuracy, our model significantly reduces computational load, making it well-suited to meet real-time requirements. This architecture is expected to find broad application in fields such as autonomous driving, public safety, and others.

Recently, various applications of indoor location-based services using Wi-Fi fingerprint data have been studied. However, since fingerprint data collected at a specific location does not have continuous information between signals and correlation information between signals, path data cannot exist in principle. Therefore, most indoor positioning technologies are based on predicting the position of a stationary positioner at a specific location based on signal data collected at a specific location in the indoor space. Due to the discontinuous nature of these signals, they are unable to account for user movement. Therefore, there is a need for techniques to improve the accuracy of indoor positioning in moving situations. This paper proposes a method for enriching all data points with relevant information to obtain improved indoor positioning results and an improved technique for generating movement path data. The proposed technique generates relevant information with continuity by expressing data points as Bounding Boxes (BB) and subsequently clustering them using grid cells. Through the proposed method, we represented and expanded the indoor location data, which consists of data points, as BB. However, data points represented by BB do not have any adjacency information with each other, and as a result, it is not possible to create a movement path between neighboring BB. To solve the problem, we used clustering, a machine learning technique that categorizes data points into groups, to group BBs. This was done by constructing a YOLO (You Only Look Once) grid cell that included all BBs and clustered them into grid cells that were divided into specific regions through the suggestion phase. The clustering results align with the indoor structure of the building, indicating that the data points have been appropriately clustered. BBs inside a grid cell are contained within a moveable area and have related information. We also generated association information between neighboring grid cells through the proposal technique, and then generated path information that can be traveled between grid cells. In this paper, we use the movement path information generated from a dataset as training data for machine learning, and through this, we propose an enhanced indoor positioning technology.

Interaction between multiple phases especially liquid-gas is one of the most common phenomena in industrial systems. Computer Vision enables modern systems to derive an automated and robust image-processing technique to address this issue. However, diverse experimental conditions still make it a challenging task to overcome. In Deep Learning, instance segmentation has created a niche in various computer vision applications as it aims to provide different instance IDs to objects belonging to the same class. In this paper, we propose a novel approach employing the YOLO (You Look Only Once) an end-to-end deep learning architecture for the detection and segmentation of bubbles in fluid flows. YOLOv5 offers significant improvements in both speed and accuracy compared to its predecessors like YOLOv3. Therefore, we train the YOLOv5 network on a dataset consisting of annotated images representing instances of bubbles across varied fluid flow environments. This paper provides both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of three YOLOv5 networks (small, medium, and extra-large) in detecting and segmenting bubbles with high accuracy and efficiency. Based on the metrics all three YOLOv5 models achieved high precision above 0.98 for bounding box detection and 0.97 for segmentation mask, and high recall value greater than 0.97 for box and 0.96 for mask quality was achieved. The achieved results indicate that the models accurately localize bubbles within the image frame, and distinguish bubble pixels from the background. Also, mean average precision (mAP50-95) consistently exceeds 0.84 across all models for the bounding box and 0.73 for the segmentation mask. The ascertained results emphasize the potential of YOLOv5 architecture as a powerful tool for automated bubble analysis in real-world applications. Our research contributes to advancing the field of deep neural networks in fluid systems and provides a fresh approach for future developments in automated bubble analysis.

To investigate this issue, we assess the performance of two state-of-the-art CNN algorithms, namely Faster R-CNN, which is the most popular region-based algorithm, and YOLOv3, which is known to be the fastest detection algorithm. We analyze two datasets with different characteristics to check the impact of various factors, such as UAV's altitude, camera resolution, and object size. The objective of this work is to conduct a robust comparison between these two cutting-edge algorithms. By using a variety of metrics, we show that YOLOv3 yields better performance in most configurations, except that it exhibits a lower recall and less confident detections when object sizes and scales in the testing dataset differ largely from those in the training dataset.

Scoring targets in shooting sports is a crucial and time-consuming task that relies on manually counting bullet holes. This paper introduced an automatic score detection model using object detection techniques. The performance of seven models belonging to two different architectural setups was compared. Models like YOLOv8n, YOLOv8s, YOLOv8m, RetinaNet-50, and RetinaNet-101 are single-shot detectors, while Faster RCNN-50 and Faster RCNN-101 belong to the two-shot detectors category. The dataset was manually captured from the shooting range and expanded by generating more versatile data using Python code. Before the dataset was trained to develop models, it was resized (640x640) and augmented using Roboflow API. The trained models were then assessed on the test dataset, and their performance was compared using matrices like mAP50, mAP50-90, precision, and recall. The results showed that YOLOv8 models can detect multiple objects with good confidence scores. Among all, YOLOv8m performed the best with the highest mAP50 value of 96.7%, followed by the performance of YOLOv8s with the mAP50 value of 96.5%. It is suggested that if the system is to be implemented in a real-time environment, YOLOv8s is a better choice since it took significantly less inference time (2.3ms) than YOLOv8m (5.7ms) and yet generated the competitive mAP50.

Craters are the most prominent geomorphological features on the surface of celestial bodies, which is playing a crucial role in studying the formation and evolution of celestial bodies, as well as in landing and planning for surface exploration. Currently, the main automatic crater detection models and datasets focus on the detection of large and medium craters. In this paper, we created 23 small lunar crater datasets for model training based on the Chang’E-2 (CE-2) DOM, DEM, Slope, and integrated data with 7 kinds of visualization stretching methods. And then, we proposed the YOLO-Crater model for Lunar and Martian small crater detection by replacing EioU and VariFocal loss to solve the crater samples imbalance problem and introducing a CBAM attention mechanism to mitigate interference from the complex extraterrestrial environment. The results show that the accuracy (P = 87.86%, R = 66.04%, and F1 = 75.41%) of the Lunar YOLO-Crater model based on the DOM-MMS (Maximum-Minimum Stretching) dataset is the highest and better than that of YOLOX model. And the Martian YOLO-Crater, trained by the Martian dataset from the 2022 GeoAI Martian Challenge, achieves good performance with P = 88.37%, R = 69.25%, and F1 = 77.65%. It indicates that the YOLO-Crater model has a strong transferability and generalization capability, which can be applied to detect small craters on the Moon and other celestial bodies.

Leader-follower autonomy (LFA) systems have so far only focused on vehicles following other vehicles. Though there have been several decades of research into this topic, there has not yet been any work on human-vehicle leader-follower systems. We present a system in which an autonomous vehicle — our ACTor 1 platform — can follow a human leader who controls the vehicle through gestures. We successfully developed a modular pipeline that uses artificial intelligence/deep learning to recognize hand-and-body gestures from a user in view of the vehicle’s camera and translate those gestures into physical action by the vehicle. We demonstrate our work using our ACTor 1 platform, a modified Polaris Gem 2 electric vehicle. This work has numerous applications, such as material transport in industrial contexts.

Intestinal parasitic infections pose a significant public health challenge in Northern Nigeria, with prevalence rates ranging from 20% to 70%. Traditional diagnostic methods, primarily microscopic examination of stool samples, face limitations such as low sensitivity and high costs. This research addresses these challenges by proposing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based platform for the identification and counting of intestinal parasites. A total of 651 samples were collected from the 7 Northern State of Nigeria along with questionnaire collecting data on demographic, socio-economic, hygiene habits and environmental factors. Leveraging the You Only Look Once (YOLO) V8 model, trained on a dataset of 360 pre-processed and 467 annotated images, the AI model demonstrated promising performance metrics. Information-Theory-Based approaches including (CIFE, CMIM, DISR and ICAP) were used on various machine learning models (Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine and Decision Tree) to analyse the risk factors associated with the parasitic disease. The precision-recall curve, average precision, mean average precision, and F1 score indicated reliable detection and classification across various parasite classes. The accuracy (97%) and AUC (99%) scores shows that CIFE with Random Forest has the best performance indicating the significant risk factors associated with the parasitic diseases. The model exhibited a well-balanced trade-off between precision and recall, showcasing its potential as a cost-effective and accessible tool for improving the diagnosis and treatment of intestinal parasitic infections in resource-limited settings.

Machine Learning can be used for social good. In this paper, we discuss how it can be used to combat climate change and facilitate land management and farming in developing countries and in particular in Côte d’Ivoire. This paper explores models that improve land and water management and agricultural farming cultivation to contrast climate change. Côte d’Ivoire is the largest producer of cocoa beans (43%) in the world, but deforestation, lack of rainfall, drought, and climate change threaten crops and the already fragile economy of Ivorian farmers. It is important to combat climate change with methods and techniques that are affordable to the local farmers and also induce positive effects in production. We discuss the use of low-cost sensors to collect data on the soil and open data and open source software to develop AI tools. We show that using deep neural networks (YOLOv5m) is effective for detecting healthy plants and pods of cocoa from damaged ones only using mobile phone images. Focusing on a single land is not enough to combat climate change, which has different causes and involves also knowledge at a higher scale. We propose a new method of forecasting for the analysis of remote sensors. Remote sensor data come from GRACE NASA Mission and ERA5 produced by the Copernicus Climate Change Service at ECMWF. We implement a new deep neural network architecture named CIWA-net. It is based on a Fully Convolutional Neural Network (FCN) [ 1] and it is a U-net like architecture [2]. The aim of CIWA-net is to forecast Total Water Storage Anomalies (TWSA). We show the quality of our model with a comparison to a vanilla Convolutional Neural Network. CIWA-net could be used also for the detection of lands that interfere with agricultural work and yields, such as deserted areas, water-soaking soil areas, zones at risk of desertification, and poor land use. The employment of AI at the service of agriculture can decrease crop losses and waste, lower the inputs onto the soil of fertilizers, responsible for the increase of Greenhouse Gases. It could be useful to help the small farmers (at a local scale) and also the policy-makers and farmers’ cooperatives (at the regional scale) to take valid and coordinated countermeasures to improve the correct use of the lands, helping to contrast and adapt to climate change.

The exploring comprehensive review of cutting-edge techniques for securing cloud-stored data and managing sensitive information in the context of smart cities through the application of Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE). It highlights the innovative integration of blockchain technology with CP-ABE, which introduces a decentralized and tamper-resistant key management system, thereby enhancing the overall security framework in cloud environments where data sharing is prevalent. Introducing an online/offline multi-authority CP-ABE scheme, characterized by hidden policies, offers significant advancements in protecting user attributes and access structures, ensuring that sensitive information remains confidential even during encryption and decryption processes. This dual approach not only fortifies security but also optimizes the efficiency of data-sharing mechanisms. Furthermore, the paper delves into implementing hidden sensitive policies and keyword search techniques within smart city infrastructures, which are designed to facilitate secure and efficient data retrieval. These techniques ensure that while data remains accessible to authorized users, privacy is rigorously maintained. Collectively, these approaches represent significant strides in bolstering the security and confidentiality of data in both cloud-based and smart city applications, addressing the growing demand for robust and efficient data management solutions in increasingly interconnected environments.

Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents, the cause of these distractions may include drowsiness, using cell phone, smoking a cigarette, etc. The proposed paper aims at monitoring the attentiveness of the driver and alerting the driver when his/her alertness goes below a certain threshold. It uses image processing using OpenCV (Computer Vision) and You Look Only Once (YOLO) algorithm to detect the eyes and object respectively and sounds an alarm when the driver is either drowsy or using his cell phone or smoking a cigarette.

This review systematically examines the progression of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) object detection algorithms from YOLOv1 to the recently unveiled YOLOv10. Employing a reverse chronological analysis, this study examines the advancements introduced by YOLO algorithms, beginning with YOLOv10 and progressing through YOLOv9, YOLOv8, and subsequent versions to explore each version's contributions to enhancing speed, accuracy, and computational efficiency in real-time object detection. The study highlights the transformative impact of YOLO across five critical application areas: automotive safety, healthcare, industrial manufacturing, surveillance, and agriculture. By detailing the incremental technological advancements that each iteration brought, this review not only chronicles the evolution of YOLO but also discusses the challenges and limitations observed in each earlier versions. The evolution signifies a path towards integrating YOLO with multimodal, context-aware, and General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) systems for the next YOLO decade, promising significant implications for future developments in AI-driven applications.
