This paper presents the latest developments in microCT, both globally and locally, for supporting the additive manufacturing industry. There are a number of recently developed capabilities which are especially relevant to the non-destructive quality inspection of additive manufactured parts; and also for advanced process optimization. These new capabilities are all locally available but not yet utilized to their full potential, most likely due to a lack of knowledge of these capabilities. The aim of this paper is therefore to fill this gap and provide an overview of these latest capabilities, showcasing numerous local examples.

With an increased interest in applications that require a clean background image, such as video surveillance, object tracking, street view imaging and location-based services on web-based maps, multiple algorithms have been developed to reconstruct a background image from cluttered scenes. Traditionally, statistical measures and existing image quality techniques have been applied for evaluating the quality of the reconstructed background images. Though these quality assessment methods have been widely used in the past, their performance in evaluating the perceived quality of the reconstructed background image has not been verified. In this work, we discuss the shortcomings in existing metrics and propose a full reference Reconstructed Background image Quality Index (RBQI) that combines color and structural information at multiple scales using a probability summation model to predict the perceived quality in the reconstructed background image given a reference image. To compare the performance of the proposed quality index with existing image quality assessment measures, we construct two different datasets consisting of reconstructed background images and corresponding subjective scores. The quality assessment measures are evaluated by correlating their objective scores with human subjective ratings. The correlation results show that the proposed RBQI outperforms all the existing approaches. Additionally, the constructed datasets and the corresponding subjective scores provide a benchmark to evaluate the performance of future metrics that are developed to evaluate the perceived quality of reconstructed background images.

Infrared and visible light image fusion technology integrates image feature information from two different modalities to generate an image that integrates complementary information from the source images. However, in low-light scenarios, the degradation of lighting in visible light images leads to existing fusion methods being unable to effectively extract texture detail information from the scene. At this time, the target prominence information provided by infrared images alone is far from sufficient. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a lightweight infrared and visible light image fusion method based on low-light enhancement, named LLE-Fuse. Firstly, the method improves the MobileOne Block by embedding the Sobel operator in the Edge-MobileOne Block to perform feature extraction and downsampling on the source images. Then, intermediate features of different scales are obtained and fused through a cross-modal attention fusion module, followed by image reconstruction using a decoder with upsampling. Next, the CLAHE algorithm is used for image enhancement of infrared and visible light images, and the enhanced loss guides the network model to learn the capability of low-light enhancement. Finally, upon completion of the network training, the method optimizes the Edge-MobileOne Block into the direct connection structure of MobileNetV1 through structural re-parameterization, effectively reducing the computational resource consumption of the model network. Through extensive experimental comparisons, this paper's method demonstrates excellent performance in both visual appeal and evaluation metrics, providing satisfactory fusion results even in low-light scenarios.

This paper describes the first results of an Image Recognition Based Location (IRBL) for mobile application focusing on the procedure to generate a Database of range images (RGB-D). In an indoor environment, to estimate the camera position and orientation, a prior spatial knowledge of the surrounding is needed. In order to achieve this objective a complete 3D survey of two different environment (Bangbae metro station of Seoul and E.T.R.I. building in Daejeon – Republic of Korea) was performed using LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) instrument and the obtained scans were processed in order to obtain a spatial model of the environments. From this, two databases of reference images were generated using a specific software realized by the Geomatics group of Politecnico di Torino (ScanToRGBDImage). This tool allow to generate synthetically different RGB-D images) centered in the each scan position in the environment. Later, the external parameters (X, Y, Z, ω, φ, κ) and the range information extracted from the DB images retrieved, are used as reference information for pose estimation of a set of acquired mobile pictures in the IRBL procedure. In this paper the survey operations, the approach for generating the RGB-D images and the IRB strategy are reported. Finally the analysis of the results and the validation test are described.

The hydroacoustic in-water stations of the International Monitoring System (IMS) network consist of three hydrophones placed at Sound Fixing and Ranging (SOFAR) channel depths and about 2 km away from each other. Whale signals recorded in the vicinity of a hydrophone triplet offer the opportunity to verify simple models of propagation in the immediate neighborhood of the triplet, by comparing arrival times and amplitudes between the three hydrophones. Two examples of whales passing by hydrophone triplets are presented and conclusions drawn about waveform coherency and amplitude of the signals recorded at the three hydrophones in the 0-50 Hz frequency band. On the examples recorded at the HA11 IMS hydroacoustic station, the amplitude decay law of one over the distance is verified, and analysis of hundreds of calls located almost above the hydrophone triplet lead to the possibility that the H11S3 hydrophone may be located further from H11S1 and H11S2, and the H11S1 hydrophone’s depth may be deeper than expected from the published locations.

Disaster issue consultation is crucial for effective emergency management, requiring timely and accurate information to support decision-making processes. This paper explores the integration of large language models (LLMs) with advanced prompt engineering to enhance the performance of AI systems in disaster management. We propose a novel multi-round prompt engineering approach that guides LLMs to iteratively refine their responses based on evolving disaster scenarios. Our method leverages diverse disaster-related datasets and employs a combination of accuracy metrics and a customized GPT-4 scoring system for evaluation. We conduct comprehensive experiments across multiple LLM platforms, including Qwen2, ChatGPT, Claude, and GPT-4, comparing our approach with baseline models and the Tree of Thoughts (ToT) method. The results demonstrate significant improvements in both accuracy and response quality, highlighting the effectiveness of our method in providing contextually relevant and actionable insights. Additional analysis confirms the robustness and generalizability of our approach across various disaster scenarios, establishing it as a valuable tool for enhancing disaster management practices.

In the dynamic landscape of E-commerce, the proliferation of user-generated queries regarding products highlights the critical need for advanced automatic question answering (AQA) systems. These systems are instrumental in harnessing the vast array of information available online to deliver immediate and informative responses to potential buyers. Recognizing the complexity of such queries, which often require synthesis of reviews, product specifications, and responses to similar questions, we introduce a sophisticated model, the Comprehensive E-commerce Answer Generation System (CEAGS). This model adeptly navigates the challenges posed by irrelevant data and sentiment ambiguity in user-generated content. Our approach leverages a dual-phase process of relevance determination and sentiment clarity, setting the stage for a transformative response generation mechanism. Empirical analyses reveal the superiority of CEAGS, with our relevance assessment framework outstripping existing models by a notable margin in precision metrics, and our answer generation module achieving unprecedented gains in content preservation and coherence. Notably, CEAGS marks a pioneering contribution to the E-commerce domain by integrating disparate information sources to formulate responses that are not only accurate but also contextually rich and user-centric.

Summary: PURPOSE. Development of a drainless energy-saving technology for the processing of high-moisture iron-containing sludge from metallurgical production. RESEARCH METHOD. The regularities of the combined process of chemical dehydration of high-moisture iron-containing sludge by powdered waste of lime and dolomite, hardening and agglomeration by pressing in a single technological cycle on the developed experimental plant were studied. In the course of laboratory studies, the temperature of the mass, the rate of dehydration, the chemical composition of the mixtures, the appearance of the resulting briquettes, the weight loss during agglomeration-humidity of the mixtures, and mechanical strength of the briquettes were measured. RESULTS. New patterns have been established that have made it possible to develop a nonfiring method for producing iron-containing materials and self-healing briquettes. The essence of his method, which is one of the main provisions of scientific novel provisions, is to combine dehydration and self-hardening of the mixture with the process of shaping by applying external pressure to the hardening mixture in molds to obtain agglomerated material in the form of briquettes in a single technological cycle. The proposed technology does not require drying or firing, and a set of strength properties occurs as the material is cooled in air during the day. A new energy-efficient and drainless method for the production of iron-containing briquettes has been developed, which combines the processes of chemical dehydration and agglomeration in one technological cycle. CONCLUSION. The proposed project and technology will allow organization of production for the processing of high-moisture iron-containing sludge and the production a complex iron-containing material as a secondary metal-containing raw material for metallurgical plants for the production of steel and rolled metal. and dolomite dust from dry gas cleaning as dehydrating and binding materials, as well as screening of coke and coal as a reducing agents. The proposed technology also solves the problems of environmental pollution and land acquisition for the storage of production waste.

This study introduces an original comprehensive system centered on identifying specific terms that indicate a user's position, particularly the discrete values representing latitude and longitude. This system not only detects these terms but also retrieves the corresponding numerical data for accurate and efficient determination of locations. The importance of this study can be applied various fields, notably aiding offline operations of military personnel, who often lack internet access. In such scenarios, precise awareness of location is vital for strategic manoeuvres, rescue operations, and navigating unfamiliar landscapes. The system allows these personnel by allowing them to extract exact location coordinates from spoken terms, thereby enhancing their awareness even in challenging surroundings. Apart from its military utility, the project holds broader significance. Teams responding to emergencies, personnel involved in disaster management, and exploratory missions can all gain from this technology during disruptions in communication infrastructure. Furthermore, travelers, adventurers, and outdoor enthusiasts can utilize this system to accurately determine their positions in remote areas without relying on online maps. We used offline speech recognition techniques to precisely transcribe spoken terms, achieving an accuracy of over 91.3% and a word error rate of 4.2%. For sound recognition, the OpenAI Whisper model was used, and a conversion process from SpeechRecognition to AudioSegmentation was implemented, followed by transforming the audio into .wav format, we have also developed the interface of the app to use it efficiently using Streamlit. This was done to ensure seamless compatibility with the Whisper model and uninterrupted audio input. By training the system to identify specific linguistic linked to location, it achieves robust detection and extraction of relevant terms. This approach eliminates the necessity for constant internet connectivity, rendering it exceptionally useful in remote, offline, and resource-limited situations.

Microwave photonic (MWP) signal processors, which process microwave signals based on photonic technologies, bring advantages intrinsic to photonics such as low loss, large processing bandwidth, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. Optical microcombs can offer a large number of wavelength channels and compact device footprints, which make them powerful multi-wavelength sources for MWP signal processors to realize a variety of processing functions. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the capability of microcomb-based MWP signal processors to handle diverse input signal waveforms. In addition, we quantify the processing accuracy for different input signal waveforms, including Gaussian, triangle, parabolic, super Gaussian, and nearly square waveforms. Finally, we analyze the factors contributing to the difference in the processing accuracy among the different input waveforms, and our theoretical analysis well elucidates the experimental results. These results provide a guidance for microcomb-based MWP signal processors when processing microwave signals of various waveforms.

The daVinci Surgical Robot has revolutionized minimally invasive surgery by enabling greater accuracy and less invasive procedures. However, the system lacks advanced features and autonomy necessary for it to function as a true partner. To enhance its usability, we introduce the implementation of a ChatGPT-based natural language robot interface. Overall, our integration of a ChatGPT-enabled daVinci Surgical Robot has potential to expand the utility of the surgical platform by supplying a more accessible interface. Our system can listen to the operator speak and, through the ChatGPT-enabled interface, translate the sentence and context to execute specific commands to alter the robot’s behavior or to activate certain features. For instance, the surgeon could say (even in Spanish) “please track my left tool” and the system will translate the sentence into a specific track command. This specific error-checked command will then be sent to the hardware which will respond by controlling the camera of the system to continuously adjust to center the left tool in the field of view. We have implemented many commands including “Find my tools” (tools that are not in the field of view) or start/stop recording that can be triggered based on a natural conversational context. Here, we present details of our prototype system, give some accuracy results, and explore its potential implications and limitations. We also discuss how artificial intelligence tools (such as ChatGPT) of the future could be leveraged by robotic surgeons to reduce errors and enhance the efficiency and safety of surgical procedures and even ask for help.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), with 10.4 million new cases per year reported in the human population. Recent studies on the Mtb transcriptome have revealed the abundance of noncoding RNAs expressed at various phases of mycobacteria growth, in culture, in infected mammalian cells and in patients. Among these noncoding RNAs are both small RNAs (sRNAs) between 50-350 nts in length and smaller RNAs (sncRNA) <50 nts. In this review, we provide an up-to-date synopsis of the identification, designation, and function of these Mtb-encoded sRNAs and sncRNAs. The methodological advances including RNA sequencing strategies, small RNA antagonists and locked nucleic acid sequence specific RNA probes advancing the studies on these small RNA are described. Initial insights into the regulation of the small RNA expression and putative processing enzymes required for their synthesis and function are discussed. There are many open questions remaining about the biological and pathogenic roles of these small non-coding RNAs, and potential research directions needed to define the role of these mycobacterial noncoding RNAs summarized.

Mercury is a toxic metal, thus, it is an element which has more and more restrictions in its uses, but despite the above, the removal of this metal, from whatever the form in which it is encountered (zero valent metal, inorganic or organic compounds), and from different sources, is of a widespread interest. In the case of Hg(II), or Hg²⁺, the investigations about the treatment of Hg(II)-bearing liquid effluents (real or in most cases synthetic solutions) appear not to end, and from the various separation technologies, adsorption is the most popular among researchers. In this topic, and in the 2019 year, more than 100 publications had been devote to this field: Hg(II)-removal-adsorption. This work examined all of them.

The principal aim of a spectral observer is twofold: the reconstruction of a signal of time via state estimation and the decomposition of such a signal into the frequencies that make it up. A spectral observer can be catalogued as an online algorithm for time-frequency analysis because is a method that can compute on the fly the Fourier transform (FT) of a signal, without having the entire signal available from the start. In this regard, this paper presents a novel spectral observer with an adjustable constant gain for reconstructing a given signal by means of the recursive identification of the coefficients of a Fourier series. The reconstruction or estimation of a signal in the context of this work means to find the coefficients of a linear combination of sines a cosines that fits a signal such that it can be reproduced. The design procedure of the spectral observer is presented along with the following applications: (1) the reconstruction of a simple periodical signal, (2) the approximation of both a square and a triangular signal, (3) the edge detection in signals by using the Fourier coefficients, (4) the fitting of the historical Bitcoin market data from 2014-12-01 to 2018-01-08 and (5) the estimation of a input force acting upon a Duffing oscillator. To round out this paper, we present a detailed discussion about the results of the applications as well as a comparative analysis of the proposed spectral observer vis-à-vis the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), which is a well-known method for time-frequency analysis.

The copper mining industry is increasingly using artificial intelligence methods to improve cop-per production processes. Recent studies reveal the use of algorithms such as Artificial Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest, among others, to develop models for predicting product quality. Other studies compare the predictive models developed with these machine learning algorithms in the mining industry, as a whole. However, not many copper mining studies published compare the results of machine learning techniques for copper recovery prediction. This study makes a detailed comparison between three models for predicting copper recovery by leaching, using four datasets resulting from mining operations in northern Chile. The algorithms used for developing the models were Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Artificial Neural Network. To validate these models, four indicators or values of merit were used: accuracy (acc), precision (p), recall (r), and Matthew’s correlation coefficient (mcc). This paper describes dataset preparation and the refinement of the threshold values used for the predictive variable most influential on the class (the copper recovery). Results show both a precision over 98.50% and also the model with the best behavior between the predicted and the real. Finally, the models obtained show the following mean values: acc=94.32, p=88.47, r=99.59, and mcc=2.31. These values are highly competitive as compared with those obtained in similar studies using other approaches in the context.

Statement of problem: The stereo-optical method can be used for assessment of strains and deformations of different fixed or removable prosthodontic constructions. Material and methods: The study used two master casts of a lower jaw with bilateral terminal edentulous seats. Their topography was identical, with missing lower molars, the left lower second premolar, and the right canine and incisors, indicating a partially edentulous lower jaw according to Eichner's B3 (and C2) classification (i.e. Kennedy class 1). The control cast had conventional oval copings for overdenture. The experimental cast was almost the same as the control, with the exception of the surfaces simulating three specific milled copings covering the remaining tooth substance. Controlled loading was measured using a gnathodynamometer. Loading stages were at 400, 800, and 1000 N. Measurements of strain and displacement were provided by the Digital Image Correlation Method and the associated software. ‘Wilcoxon Lambda’ two sample tests based on the simple linear rank statistics were used in the analysis of differences in the displacement and deformation between the control rounded and experimental milled copings under loading numerical values. Results: It was found that smaller values of deformations are measured on milled copings when compared to the controls. There were statistically significant differences in displacement between the control rounded and experimental milled copings (Pr > |Z| = 0.001) as well as in deformations (Pr > |Z| = 0.0298). Conclusions: Experimental milled copings are less susceptible to deformation compared to the control conventional oval copings. These findings may have clinical significance in improvements of primary and secondary retention of overdentures on milled copings.

The computer program "Histropy" is an interactive Python program for the quantification of selected features of two-dimensional (2D) images/patterns (in either JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or baseline TIF/TIFF formats) by means of calculations based on the pixel intensities in this data, their histograms, and user-selected sections of those histograms. The histograms of these images display pixel-intensity values along the x-axis (of a 2D Cartesian plot), with the frequency of each intensity value within the image represented along the y-axis. The images need to be of 8-bit or 16-bit information depth and can be of arbitrary size. (Up to 1024 pixels maximum on both sides is recommended as larger images tend to significantly slow the program’s performance). Histropy generates an image’s histogram surrounded by a graphical user interface that allows one to select any range of image-pixel intensity levels, i.e. sections along the histograms’ x-axis, using either the computer mouse or numerical text entries. The program subsequently calculates the (so-called Monkey Model) Shannon entropy and root-mean-square contrast for the selected section and displays them as part of what we call a "histogram-workspace-plot." To support the visual identification of small peaks in the histograms, the user can switch between a linear and log-base-10 display scale for the y-axis of the histograms. Pixel intensity data from different images can be overlaid onto the same histogram-workspace-plot for visual comparisons. The visual outputs of the program can be saved as histogram-workspace-plots in the PNG format for future usage. The source code of the program and a brief user manual are published in the supporting materials as well as on GitHub . Instead of taking only 2D images as inputs, the program’s functionality could be extended by a few lines of code to other potential uses employing data tables with one or two dimensions in the CSV format.

X-ray tomography is an effective non-destructive testing method for industrial quality control. Limited angle tomography can be used to reduce the amount of data that needs to be acquired and thus speed up the process. In some industrial applications, however, objects are flat and layered, and laminography is preferred. It can deliver 2D images of the structure of a layered object at a particular depth from very limited data. An image at a particular depth is obtained by summing those parts of the data that contribute to that slice. This produces a sharp image of that slice while superimposing a blurred version of structures present at other depths. In this paper, we investigate an optimal experimental design (OED) problem for laminography that aims to determine the optimal source positions. Not only can this be used to mitigate imaging artifacts, it can also speed up the acquisition process in case where moving the source and detector is time consuming (e.g., in robotic arm imaging systems). We investigate the imaging artifacts in detail through a modified Fourier Slice Theorem. We address the experimental design problem within the Bayesian risk framework using empirical Bayes risk minimization. Finally, we present numerical experiments on simulated data.

Hyperspectral (HS) imaging plays a pivotal role in various fields, including medical diagnostics, where precise human vein detection is crucial. Hyperspectral image data are very large and can cause computational complexities. Dimensionality reduction techniques are often employed to streamline HS image data processing. This paper investigates the effectiveness of three dimensionality reduction techniques, namely: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Folded PCA (FPCA), and Ward’s Linkage Strategy using Mutual Information (WaLuMI) for vein detection using HS images. A HS image dataset, encompassing left and right-hand images captured from 100 subjects with varying skin tones was created and annotated using anatomical data to represent vein and non-vein areas within the images. To generate experimental results, the HS image dataset was divided into train and test datasets. Optimum performing parameters for each of the dimensionality reduction techniques in conjunction with The Support Vector Machine binary classification were determined using the Training dataset. The performance of the three dimensionality reduction based vein detection methods was then assessed and compared using the test image dataset. Results show that the FPCA-based method outperforms the other two methods in terms of accuracy. For visualization purposes, the classification prediction image for each technique is post-processed using morphological operators, and results show the significant potential of HS imaging in vein detection.

There is growing recognition of the adverse effects of body image dissatisfaction (BID) and eating disorder (ED) symptoms on adolescent health. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of ED symptoms, BID, and their relationship in adolescents from public schools in Southern Brazil. A total of 782 schoolchildren (male: n=420, female: n=362); age: 15 ± 0,4 years) answered a self-administrated questionnaire to identify sociodemographic data. Children´s Figure Rating Scale was adopted to identify body image and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) was applied to investigate ED symptoms. Inferential statistics and hierarchical model-controlled logistic regression were used for association between variables. Most of the schoolchildren reported being satisfied with their bodies. However, we observed a higher prevalence of dissatisfaction among girls for being overweight and thinness among boys. Female students and students from schools located in the central area of the city showed higher chances of developing ED symptoms, and the absence of symptoms of ED appeared to act as a protective factor against BID in schoolchildren. Results of this study show the need to reflect on these factors that influence the development of ED and non-acceptance of their own body in a population concerned with their physical appearance.

Autonomous image recognition has numerous potential applications in the field of planetary science and geology. For instance, having the ability to classify images of rocks would allow geologists to have immediate feedback without having to bring back samples to the laboratory. Also, planetary rovers could classify rocks in remote places and even in other planets without needing human intervention. Shu et al. classified 9 different types of rock images using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with the image features extracted autonomously. Through this method, the authors achieved a test accuracy of 96.71%. In this research, Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) have been used to classify the same set of rock images. Results show that a 3-layer network obtains an average accuracy of 99.60% across 10 trials on the test set. A version of Self-taught Learning was also implemented to prove the generalizability of the features extracted by the CNN. Finally, one model has been chosen to be deployed on a mobile device to demonstrate practicality and portability. The deployed model achieves a perfect classification accuracy on the test set, while taking only 0.068 seconds to make a prediction, equivalent to about 14 frames per second.

The development of unmanned satellite space technology is increasingly willing, the emergence of medium resolution satellites with sensitivity and spectral variants such as Landsat is very effective in observing environmental changes, while the purpose of this study is to monitor the development of built-in land using image transformation techniques, estimating built-in land changes. The research method uses the NDVI image transformation technique, NDBI and Built Up Index, with Landsat satellite image data obtained from USGS. Accuracy sampling is done by purposive sampling with confusion matrix accuracy test technique. The research results were found. developed land for the period 2004 - 2010 with a percentage of 19.25%, for stages 2010 - 2018 with a percentage of 30.25%. The land development was built based on the area of ​​the highest sub-district in the Kubung area in the early period with a percentage of 7.20% then in the second period with a percentage of 32.23%. The quality of the accuracy of the results of image analysis using confusion matrix technique with an image accuracy level in a field sample of 185 with an image accuracy of 86.04%.

The focus of this study is to identify whether resilience and sustainable development can be used as an image for strategic planning of the city marketing. Resilience is about building and planning for future proof the cities. How urban challenges and crisis have the lowest impact and the maximum of bounce back and evolution. Resilience is part of the sustainable development. Thus, it is important for the decision-makers to define the mission on their strategic planning in a holistically way taking into consideration the basic assets of a city, the environment, the economy and the society and how can all of them can be combined to marketing the city and take into consideration the internal and external environment. As the past few years’ city marketing has become an important tool for the urban development. The main goal is to show how city marketing can be applied on a city that tries to be more resilient and more sustainable by using strategic urban planning to set the vision, to identify the challenges and the problematic areas and to set new goals and objectives in order to plan and build to future proof the complexity of an urban system. For answering the questions of this article we use two case studies Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Thessaloniki (Greece), using a literature review and researches conducted alongside with a benchmarking of their resilient strategies as both of the cities are members of the Resilient Cities Network. From a different perspective of resilient thinking, both of the cities have managed to use resilience as a marketing image for further sustainable development.

In this paper, a technique of image watermarking using multiple images as watermarks is presented. The technique is based on transform domain functions including discrete wavelet transform (DWT), discrete cosine transform (DCT) and singular value decomposition (SVD) with an image as the host signal i.e. the watermarks will be used as proofs of the authenticity of the host image. The technique is executed by performing multilevel DWT followed by applying DCT and SVD to both the host and watermark. Multiple watermarks are used for the insurance of better security level. The scheme is immune to common image processing operations & some attacks and exhibits PSNR of 108.3781dB, normalized cross correlation (NCC) over 0.99 and normalized correlation (NC) over 0.99.

The aim of the research was getting to know the risk of dependency on physical exercising in individual sportspeople and the relationship with body dissatisfaction and motivation. 225 triathletes, swimmers, cyclists and athletes- with ages going from 18 to 63 years old took part in the research, of which 145 were men (M = 35.57 ±10.46 years) and 80 women (M = 32.83 ±10.31 years). The EDS-R was used to study the dependency on exercising, BSQ to study body dissatisfaction, BREQ-3 to know the motivation of participants and BIAQ to analyse conducts of avoidance to body image. The obtained results show that 8.5% of the subjects had risk of dependency on exercising and that 18.2% tend to have corporal dissatisfaction, without meaningful differences in the kind of sport they practiced. However, there were important differences concerning the dependency on physical exercise (15% vs 4.8%) and body dissatisfaction (31.1% vs 11%) in relation to sex, being the higher percentage referring to women. The introjected regulation and the conduct of food restriction were the predictor variables of the dependency on exercising and corporal dissatisfaction.

Much has been learned about the interaction between myosin and actin through biochemistry, in vitro motility assays and cryo-electron microscopy of F-actin decorated with myosin heads. Comparatively less is known about actin-myosin interactions within the filament lattice of muscle, where myosin heads function as independent force generators and thus most measurements report an average signal from multiple biochemical and mechanical states. All of the 3-D imaging by electron microscopy that has revealed the interplay of the regular array of actin subunits and myosin heads within the filament lattice has been accomplished using the flight muscle of the large waterbug Lethocerus sp. Lethocerus flight muscle possesses a particularly favorable filament arrangement that enables all the myosin cross-bridges contacting the actin filament to be visualized in a thin section. This review covers the history of this effort and the progress toward visualizing the complex set of conformational changes that myosin heads make when binding to actin in several static states as well as fast frozen actively contracting muscle. The efforts have revealed a consistent pattern of changes to the myosin head structures determined by X-ray crystallography needed to explain the structure of the different acto-myosin interactions observed in situ.

At present, business strategies in SMEs (Small and medium enterprises) are crucial for consolidation in highly competitive markets, in achieving a better image and in business profitability. One of the strategies that have the most success and business success are sustainable practices and social responsibility such as: ISO 14001 and ISO 26001. The literature related to sustainable business is based mainly on the theory of resources and capabilities, and in theory based on Stakeholders. These currents state that companies should focus on profitable strategies to ensure significant and long-term results, in order to achieve organizational and financial results for stakeholders. In this work, the sample consists of 215 companies from the commerce, services and industry sectors, located in the southern region of the State of Sonora in Mexico. The objective of the work is to analyze the influence of ISO 14001 and 26001 standards on the image and profitability of SMEs. The statistical analysis of the data has been carried out through the linear regression technique by OLS (Ordinary Least Squares). The findings prove that the ISO 14001 standard is the one that most influences the improvement of the business image and the level of profitability of the SME. In addition, we discovered that ISO 26001 has a partial influence on the image and profitability of the SME.

As the demand for a more sustainable society increases, adopting a sustainable banking approach serves as a competitive advantage for banks that are focused on attaining bank loyalty. This study revolves around understanding the role of sustainable banking practices on bank loyalty, while exploring the mediating effect of corporate image in the relationship between sustainable banking practices and bank loyalty. 511 data derived from customers of the banking sector was adopted for this study. Result from the structural equation modeling shows that sustainable banking practices positively and directly affects bank loyalty and corporate image, corporate image directly and positively affect bank loyalty, and also mediates in the relationship between sustainable banking practices and bank loyalty.

An effective on-board cloud detection method in small satellites would greatly improve the downlink data transmission efficiency and reduce the memory cost. In this paper, an ensemble method combining a lightweight U-Net with wavelet image compression is proposed and evaluated. The red, green, blue and infrared waveband images from Landsat-8 dataset are trained and tested to estimate the performance of proposed method. The LeGall-5/3 wavelet transform is applied on the dataset to accelerate the neural network and improve the feasibility of on-board implement. The experiment results illustrate that the overall accuracy of the proposed model achieves 97.45% by utilizing only four bands. Tests on low coefficients of compressed dataset have shown that the overall accuracy of the proposed method is still higher than 95%, while its inference speed is accelerated to 0.055 second per million pixels and maximum memory cost reduces to 2Mb. By taking advantage of mature image compression system in small satellites, the proposed method provides a good possibility of on-board cloud detection based on deep learning.

This study presents a method for the rapid and accurate generation of two-dimensional (2D) orthomosaic maps using selected image data collected by drone-captured video. The focus is on developing a real-time method capable of creating maps more quickly than image selection. The scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm is applied to drone images to extract features in various scale regions. For feature point matching, a matching method based on the fast library for approximate nearest neighbors (FLANN) was adopted. A comparison of the computational speed of the FLANN with that of the k-nearest neighbors (KNN) and brute force matcher during the matching process revealed FLANN's superior capability for real-time data processing. The random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm was employed to enhance the accuracy of the matching by removing outliers, effectively identifying and eliminating mismatches, and reinforcing the reliability of feature point matching. The combination of SIFT, FLANN, and RANSAC algorithms demonstrates the capacity to process drone-captured image data in real time, facilitating the generation of precise 2D orthomosaic maps. The proposed method was assessed and validated using imagery obtained as the drone executed curvilinear and straight flight paths, confirming its accuracy and operational efficiency concurrently with the image capture process.

The deterioration of living conditions is highlighting the benefits of urban greenery for creating sustainable cities. Using Washington D.C. as a case, we demonstrate the performance of GVI and examine disparities in greening surrounding affordable housing. With the pre-trained segmentation model, we generated GVI based on 54,691 Street View images and applied the Spearman’s correlation analysis to examine LST cooling effect. We found that LST shows significant negative correlations (p<0.001) with GVI and newly developed GVI-3D with coefficients of -0.60 and -0.73. The distribution of GVI in residential zoning was polarised, affordable housing projects have less greenery. In conclusion, we argue that it is of practical significance to monitor GVI instead of large scale NDVI for urban environments due to its controllability and human-centric attributes.

Popular geo-computer vision works make use of aerial imager with sizes ranging from 64 × 64 to 1024 × 1024 pixels without any overlap, although the learning process of deep learning models can be affected by the reduced semantic context or the lack of information near image boundaries. In this work, the impact of three image sizes (256 × 256, 512 × 512, and 1024 × 1024 pixels) and two image overlap levels (no overlap and 12.5% overlap) on the performance of road classification models was statistically evaluated. For this, two convolutional neural networks used in various tasks of geospatial object extraction were trained (using the same hyperparameters) on a large dataset (containing aerial image data covering 8650 km² of the Spanish territory that was labelled with binary road information) under twelve different scenarios, each scenario featuring a different combination of tile size and overlap. To assess their generalisation capacity, the performance of all resulting models was evaluated on a data from novel areas covering approximately 825 km². The performance metrics obtained were analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to evaluate the impact of the performance at distinct levels of the fixed factors (tile size, tile overlap, neural network architecture). Statistical tests were applied to study the main and interaction effects of the fixed factors on the performance. A significance level of 0.05 was applied to all the null hypothesis tests. The results were highly significant for the main effects (p-values lower than 0.001), while the two-way and three-way interaction effects among them had different levels of significance. The results indicate that the training of road classification models on images with a higher tile size (more semantic context) and tile overlap (additional border context and continuity) significantly impacts their performance. The best model was trained on a dataset featuring tiles with a size of 1024 × 1024 pixels and a 12.5% overlap and achieved a loss value of 0.0984, an F1 score of 0.8728, and an ROC-AUC score of 0.9766, together with an error rate of 3.5% on the test set.

The paper describes the new method for image compression based on coordinated group signal transformation. The algorithm is a type of difference coding. Coordinated processing significantly simplifies the difference signal conversion scheme using a single group codec for all signals. The described method considers color channels as correlated signals of a multi-channel communication system. The specifics of the processed data required modification of the coordinated group processing algorithm. First, we changed how to calculate the difference signals to prevent data loss. Secondly, the group codec was supplemented with a neural network to improve the quality of reconstructed images. We considered the following types of neural networks: fully connected, recurrent, convolution, and convolution in the Fourier space. Based on the simulation results, it is best to use fully connected neural networks if the goal is to minimize processing delay time. These networks have a response time of 13 ms. On the other hand, if the priority is to improve quality in cases where delays are not critical, then convolution neural networks in the Fourier space should be used. These networks have a response time of 140 ms and are of significant interest.

Detector-based spectral CT offers the possibility of obtaining spectral information from which discrete acquisitions at different energy levels can be derived, yielding so-called virtual monoenergetic images (VMI). In this study, we aimed to develop a jointly optimized deep learning framework based on dual-energy CT pulmonary angiography (DE-CTPA) data to generate synthetic monoenergetic images (SMI) for improving automatic pulmonary embolism (PE) detection in single-energy CTPA scans. For this purpose, we used two data sets: our institutional DE-CTPA data set D1 comprising polyenergetic arterial series and the corresponding VMI at low-energy levels (40 keV) with 7,892 image pairs, and a 10% subset of the 2020 RSNA Pulmonary Embolism Detection Challenge data set D2, which consisted of 161,253 polyenergetic images with dichotomous slice-wise annotations (PE/no PE). We trained a fully convolutional encoder-decoder on D1 to generate SMI from single-energy CTPA scans of D2, which were then fed into a ResNet50 network for training of the downstream PE classification task. The quantitative results on the reconstruction ability of our framework revealed high-quality visual SMI predictions with reconstruction results of 0.984 ± 0.002 (structural similarity) and 41.706 ± 0.547 dB (peak-signal-to-noise ratio). PE classification resulted in an AUC of 0.84 for our model, which achieved improved performance compared to other naive approaches with AUCs up to 0.81. Our study stresses the role of using joint optimization strategies for deep learning algorithms to improve automatic PE detection. The proposed pipeline may prove to be beneficial for computer-aided detection systems and could help rescue CTPA studies with suboptimal opacification of the pulmonary arteries from single-energy CT scanners.

Advancements in deep learning and availability of medical imaging data have led to use of CNN based architectures in disease diagnostic assisted systems. In spite of the abundant use of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) based tests in COVID-19 diagnosis, CT images offer an applicable supplement with its high sensitivity rates. Here, we study classification of COVID-19 pneumonia (CP) and non-COVID-19 pneumonia (NCP) in chest CT scans using efficient deep learning methods to be readily implemented by any hospital. We report our deep network framework design that encompasses Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and bidirectional Long Short Term Memory (biLSTM) architectures. Our study achieved high specificity (CP: 98.3%, NCP: 96.2% Healthy: 89.3%) and high sensitivity (CP: 84.0%, NCP: 93.9% Healthy: 94.9%) in classifying COVID-19 pneumonia, non-COVID-19 pneumonia and healthy patients. Next, we provide visual explanations for the CNN predictions with gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM). The results provided a model explainability by showing that Ground Glass Opacities (GGO), indicators of COVID-19 pneumonia disease, were captured by our CNN network. Finally, we have implemented our approach in three hospitals proving its compatibility and efficiency.

This paper presents novel feature descriptors and classification algorithms for automated scoring of HER2 in Whole Slide Images (WSI) of breast cancer histology slides. Since a large amount of processing is involved in analyzing WSI images, the primary design goal has been to keep the computational complexity to the minimum possible level and to use simple, yet robust feature descriptors that can provide accurate classification of the slides. We propose two types of feature descriptors that encode important information about staining patterns and the percentage of staining present in ImmunoHistoChemistry (IHC) stained slides. The first descriptor is called a characteristic curve which is a smooth non-increasing curve that represents the variation of percentage of staining with saturation levels. The second new descriptor introduced in this paper is an LBP feature curve which is also a non-increasing smooth curve that represents the local texture of the staining patterns. Both descriptors show excellent interclass variance and intraclass correlation, and are suitable for the design of automatic HER2 classification algorithms. This paper gives the detailed theoretical aspects of the feature descriptors and also provides experimental results and comparative analysis.

Speckle noise reduction is an important area of research in the field of ultrasound image processing. Several algorithms for speckle noise characterization and analysis have been recently proposed in the area. Synthetic ultrasound images can play a key role in noise evaluation methods as they can be used to generate a variety of speckle noise models under different interpolation and sampling schemes, and can also provide valuable ground truth data for estimating the accuracy of the chosen methods. However, not much work has been done in the area of modelling synthetic ultrasound images, and in simulating speckle noise generation to get images that are as close as possible to real ultrasound images. An important aspect of simulated synthetic ultrasound images is the requirement for extensive quality assessment for ensuring that they have the texture characteristics and gray-tone features of real images. This paper presents texture feature analysis of synthetic ultrasound images using local binary patterns (LBP) and demonstrates the usefulness of a set of LBP features for image quality assessment. Experimental results presented in the paper clearly show how these features could provide an accurate quality metric that correlates very well with subjective evaluations performed by clinical experts.

In the rapidly evolving field of natural language processing (NLP), the processing of the Chinese language, with its unique complexities, presents significant challenges, especially in the context of Large Language Models (LLMs) like LLaMA2. These challenges are further exacerbated by the presence of non-standardized text prevalent across digital Chinese content. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel hybrid approach that seamlessly integrates deep contextual embeddings with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to enhance the processing of standardized Chinese text. Our approach involves a multi-stage process wherein deep contextual embeddings are first utilized to capture the nuanced semantic relationships within text. Following this, CNNs are employed to identify and exploit structural and syntactic patterns, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the text. This hybrid model significantly improves LLaMA2’s efficiency and accuracy across various Chinese text processing tasks by ensuring that both semantic depth and structural nuances are accurately captured. The effectiveness of our model is demonstrated through rigorous testing across several benchmarks, showcasing its superiority in processing Chinese text with enhanced accuracy and speed. This research not only contributes to the advancement of text processing capabilities of LLMs but also opens new avenues for their application in tasks such as automated translation and sentiment analysis.

Due to the substantial growth of internet users and its spontaneous access via electronic devices, the amount of electronic contents is growing enormously in recent years through instant messaging, social networking posts, blogs, online portals, and other digital platforms. Unfortunately, the misapplication of technologies has boosted with this rapid growth of online content which leads to the rise in suspicious activities. People misuse the web media to disseminate malicious activity, perform the illegal movement, abuse other people, and publicize suspicious contents on the web. The suspicious contents usually available in the form of text, audio or video, whereas text contents have been used in most of the cases to perform suspicious activities. Thus, one of the most challenging issues for NLP researchers is to develop a system that can identify suspicious text efficiently from the specific contents. In this paper, a Machine Learning (ML)-based classification model is proposed (hereafter called STD) to classify Bengali text into non-suspicious and suspicious categories based on its original contents. A set of ML classifiers with various features has been used on our developed corpus, consisting of 7000 Bengali text documents where 5600 documents used for training and 1400 documents used for testing. The performance of the proposed system is compared with the human baseline and existing ML techniques. The SGD classifier `tf-idf’ with the combination of unigram and bigram features are used to achieve the highest accuracy of 84.57%.

With the development of satellite load technology and very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit technology, on-board real-time synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging systems have facilitated rapid response to disasters. Limited by severe size, weight, and power consumption constraints, a key challenge of on-board SAR imaging system design is to achieve high real-time processing performance. In addition, with the rise of multi-mode SAR applications, the reconfiguration of the on-board processing system is beginning to receive widespread attention. This paper presents a multi-mode SAR imaging chip with SoC architecture based on the reconfigurable double-operation engines and multilayer switching network. We decompose the commonly used extend chirp scaling (CS) SAR imaging algorithm into 8 types of double-operation engines according to the computing orders, and design a three-level switching network to connect these engines for data transition. The CPU is responsible for engine scheduling based on data flow driven with instructions to implement each part of the CS algorithm. Thus, multi-mode floating-point SAR imaging processing can be integrated into a single Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip instead of relying on distributed technologies. As a proof of concept, a prototype measurement system with chip-included board is implemented, and the performance of the proposed design is demonstrated on Chinese Gaofen-3 stripmap continuous imaging. A chip requires 9.2 s, 50.6 s and 7.4 s for a stripmap with 16,384×16,384 granularity, multi-channel stripmap with 65.536×8192 granularity and multi-channel scan mode with 32,768×4096 granularity and 6.9 W for the system hardware to process the SAR raw data.

This work investigates into the enhancement of iris recognition systems through a two-module approach focusing on low level image preprocessing techniques and advanced feature extraction. The first module is dedicated to the preprocessing of iris images, leveraging the Canny algorithm for edge detection followed by the circle-based Hough transform for precise iris extraction. This process, integral to our methodology, ensures the quality and consistency necessary for the subsequent Binary Statistical Image Features (BSIF) analysis. The second module employs the BSIF technique, incorporating domain-specific filters trained on iris-specific data, for robust biometric identification. By combining these advanced image preprocessing techniques, the proposed method addresses key challenges in iris recognition, such as occlusions, varying pigmentation, and textural diversity. Experimental results on the Human-inspired Domain-specific Binarized Image Features (HDBIF) Dataset composed of 1892 iris images demonstrate the effectiveness of the developped approach, with potential future improvements including adaptive algorithms and machine learning integrations for enhanced performance in diverse and unpredictable real-world applications. The novel contributions of this paper lie in the provision of a reproducible research framework, making the iris-domain-specific BSIF filters, training patches, testing database, and source codes publicly available for further application and study.

Radiotherapy commonly utilizes CBCT for patient positioning and treatment monitoring. CBCT is deemed to be secure for patients, making it suitable for the delivery of fractional doses. However, limitations such as a narrow field of view, beam hardening, scattered radiation artifacts, and variability in pixel intensity hinder the direct use of raw CBCT for dose recalculation during treatment. To address this issue, reliable correction techniques are necessary to remove artifacts and remap pixel intensity into HU values. This study proposes a deep-learning framework for calibrating CBCT images acquired with narrow FOV systems and demonstrates its potential use in proton treatment planning updates. Cycle-consistent GAN processes raw CBCT to reduce scatter and remap HU. Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate CBCT scans, enabling the possibility to focus solely on the algorithm’s ability to reduce artifacts and cupping effects without considering intra-patient longitudinal variability and producing a fair comparison between planning CT and calibrated CBCT dosimetry. To showcase the viability of the approach using real-world data, experiments were also conducted using real CBCT. Tests were performed on a publicly available dataset of 40 patients who received ablative radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer. The simulated CBCT calibration led to a difference in proton dosimetry of less than 2%, compared to the planning CT. The potential toxicity effect on the organs at risk decreased from about 50% (uncalibrated) up the 2% (calibrated). The gamma pass rate at 3%/2mm produced an improvement of about 37% in replicating the prescribed dose before and after calibration (53.78% vs 90.26%). Real data also confirmed this with slightly inferior performances for the same criteria (65.36% vs 87.20%). These results may confirm that generative artificial intelligence brings the use of narrow FOV CBCT scans incrementally closer to clinical translation in proton therapy planning updates.

Skin image analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) has recently attracted significant research interest, particularly for analyzing skin images captured by mobile devices. Acne is one of the most common skin conditions with profound effects in severe cases. In this study, we developed an AI system called AcneDet for automatic acne object detection and acne severity grading using facial images captured by smartphones. AcneDet includes two models for conducting two tasks: (1) a Faster R-CNN-based deep learning model for the detection of acne lesion objects of four types including blackheads/whiteheads, papules/pustules, nodules/cysts, and acne scars; and (2) a LightGBM machine learning model for grading acne severity using the Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA) scale. The output of the Faster R-CNN model, i.e., the counts of each acne type, were used as input for the LightGBM model for acne severity grading. A dataset consisting of 1,572 labeled facial images captured by both iOS and Android smartphones was used for training. The results show that the Faster R-CNN model achieves a mAP of 0.54 for acne object detection. The mean accuracy of acne severity grading by the LightGBM model is 0.85. With this study, we hope to contribute to the development of artificial intelligent systems that are able to help acne patients understand more about their conditions and support doctors in acne diagnosis.

Deep Learning is a recent and important addition to the computational toolbox available for image reconstruction in fluorescence microscopy. We review state-of-the-art applications such as image restoration, super-resolution, and light-field imaging, and discuss how the latest Deep Learning research can be applied to other image reconstruction tasks such as structured illumination, spectral deconvolution, and sample stabilisation. Despite its successes, Deep Learning also poses significant challenges, has often misunderstood capabilities, and overlooked limits. We will address key questions, such as: What are the challenges in obtaining training data? Can we discover structures not present in the training data? And, what is the danger of inferring unsubstantiated image details?

The key to simulating soil erosion is to calculate the vegetation cover (C) factor. Methods that apply remote sensing to calculate C factor at regional scale cannot directly use the C factor formula. That is because the C factor formula is obtained by experiment, and needs the coverage ratio data of croplands, woodlands and grasslands at standard plot scale. In this paper, we present a C factor conversion method from a standard plot to a km-sized grid based on large sample theory and multi-scale remote sensing. Results show that: 1) Compared with the existing C factor formula, our method is based on the coverage ratio of croplands, woodlands and grasslands on a km-sized grid, takes the C factor formula obtained from the standard plot experiment and applies it to regional scale. This method improves the applicability of the C factor formula, and can satisfy the need to simulate soil erosion in large areas. 2) The vegetation coverage obtained by remote sensing interpretation is significantly consistent (paired samples t-test, t = −0.03, df = 0.12, 2-tail significance p < 0.05) and significantly correlated with the measured vegetation coverage. 3) The C factor of the study area is smaller in the middle, southern and northern regions, and larger in the eastern and western regions. The main reason for that is the distribution of woodlands, the Hunshandake and Horqin sandy lands and the valleys affected by human activities. 4) The method presented in this paper is more meticulous than the C factor method based on the vegetation index, improves the applicability of the C factor formula, and can be used to simulate soil erosion on large scale and provide strong support for regional soil and water conservation planning.

Sentiment analysis has emerged as a vital application of Natural Language Processing (NLP), enabling the extraction of subjective information from textual data. This study conducts a comparative analysis of various machine learning algorithms employed in sentiment analysis, including traditional models such as Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Decision Trees, as well as contemporary techniques such as Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and deep learning approaches like Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. Using a comprehensive dataset sourced from social media platforms and product reviews, we evaluate the performance of these algorithms based on accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Our findings highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm in handling sentiment classification tasks, emphasizing the influence of feature extraction techniques, such as Bag of Words and Word Embeddings, on model performance. The results indicate that while deep learning models generally outperform traditional algorithms, the choice of algorithm should be tailored to the specific context and requirements of the analysis. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the efficacy of machine learning methods in NLP, offering insights that can guide researchers and practitioners in selecting appropriate algorithms for sentiment analysis tasks.

This paper presents a method for filtering and extracting noise from ECG signals using a Butterworth filter. The aim is to enhance signal qual- ity, enabling more accurate analysis in biomedical contexts, particularly in arrhythmia detection and other cardiac assessments.

In the digital age, social media platforms have become a significant source of both information and misinformation, presenting challenges and opportunities for threat intelligence. Natural Language Processing (NLP) has emerged as a powerful tool for extracting actionable insights from the vast amounts of unstructured text generated on these platforms. This paper explores the application of NLP techniques to enhance social media threat intelligence, focusing on methodologies for detecting and analyzing threats such as disinformation, cyberbullying, and extremist content. We examine various NLP approaches, including sentiment analysis, topic modeling, and entity recognition, and their effectiveness in identifying and mitigating potential risks. The paper also addresses the challenges associated with processing social media data, such as dealing with slang, context, and multilingual content. By leveraging NLP, organizations can improve their ability to monitor and respond to emerging threats in real-time, ultimately enhancing their overall security posture. The findings suggest that while NLP offers significant benefits, it must be complemented by human expertise and ethical considerations to ensure accurate and responsible threat assessment.

Limiting training data in low-resource languages is a barrier to Natural Language Processing (NLP). Regardless, languages with thousands of users worldwide require improved NLP capabilities. The Table-to-Text task—typically develops natural language descriptions using data tables, tests model reasoning abilities—although it is especially tough in multi-language settings. System output frequently lack credit to their underlying data. Intermediate planning strategies—which include Question-Answer (QA) blueprints—improving summarization tasks by presenting related QA pair prior to verbalization. Therefore, this study analyses whether QA blueprints improve multilingual Table-to-Text output attribution. An enlarged multilingual dataset, encompassing African languages, contains QA blueprints that were produced and filtered heuristically. This dataset is used to fine-tune sequence-to-sequence model (transformers)—both with and without blueprints. Two configurations are evaluated—English reference blueprints with language target verbalization and modified blueprints. These results show that English-only models benefit from blueprints, whereas multi language models cannot. Errors in machine-translating blueprints provide challenges, as do models that rely on their generated blueprints.

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) stands as a persistent challenge within the Natural Language Processing (NLP) community. While various NLP packages exist, the Lesk algorithm in the NLTK library, a widely recognized tool, demonstrates suboptimal accuracy. Conversely, the application of deep neural networks offers heightened classification precision, yet their practical utility is constrained by demanding memory requirements. This research paper introduces an innovative method addressing WSD challenges by optimizing memory usage without compromising state-of-the-art accuracy. The presented methodology facilitates the development of WSD system that seamlessly integrates into NLP tasks, resembling the functionality offered by the NLTK library. Furthermore, this paper advocates treating the BERT language model as a gold standard, proposing modifications to manually annotated datasets and semantic dictionaries such as WordNet to enhance WSD accuracy. The empirical validation through a series of experiments establishes the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving state-of-the-art performance across multiple WSD datasets. This contribution represents advancement in mitigating the challenges associated with WSD, offering a practical solution for integration into NLP applications.

Nowadays, inquiries are one of the most important tasks to be executed in order to get valued information. When an inquiry is done to gather information about a human behavior there are some problems inherent to it. One of the main problems is how the information about many different persons can be processed to give good information about their environment. Most of the information gathered by these inquiries is used to analyze the behavior of the respondents. It can be used to estimate the success of a certain product on the market or just to validate the satisfaction of current costumers. The veracity of this information can be critical to model environments with some acceptable level of precision. Modelling environments through Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is highly common because ANN’s are excellent to model predictable environments using a set of data. ANN’s are good in deal with sets of data with some noise, but they are fundamentally surjective mathematical functions and they aren’t able to give different results for the same input. So if an ANN is trained using data where the same input has different images which can be the case of survey data, this can be a problem for the success of modelling the environment. Therefore is necessary to process the data in order to adjust and eliminate invalid data.

The exploration and understanding of sentiments and emotions through textual analysis are foundational to advancements in natural language processing (NLP). While sentiment analysis, which involves discerning the polarity of text, has been extensively explored, the nuanced detection of complex emotions within textual content is still an emerging area of study. In this paper, we introduce EmoLeverage, a model leveraging Transformer architecture and enhanced with a novel Fusion Adapter module. This model aims to deepen emotion detection capabilities by drawing insights from fundamental sentiment analysis tasks, focusing exclusively on textual data. EmoLeverage sets a new standard in the field by demonstrating that deep, nuanced understanding of emotions is achievable through text alone, challenging and surpassing existing methodologies in emotion identification on key datasets. This is a significant step forward, considering the complexity of human emotions and the subtleties involved in their expression through language. By concentrating on textual input, EmoLeverage offers a promising avenue for applications where audio or visual data is not available, highlighting the versatility and potential of text-based emotional analysis. Our approach illustrates the untapped potential of leveraging sophisticated NLP techniques to enhance the detection and comprehension of a wide array of emotions from text. The success of EmoLeverage in outperforming conventional models in emotion recognition tasks underscores the model's effectiveness in parsing and understanding the intricate expressions of human emotions through linguistic cues alone. This achievement paves the way for more accurate, efficient, and nuanced emotion detection tools, potentially transforming various sectors by providing deeper insights into human emotional states through text.

Grain legumes are fair sources of protein, amino acids and energy, and can be used as a replacement for soybean meal in poultry feed formulations as the soybean meal becomes short in supply and costly. However, a concern associated with the use of grain legumes in poultry feeding is the presence of antinutritional factors. Effective processing and utilisation of these grain legumes in poultry feeding are well documented. The current review focuses on four selected grain legumes (lupins [Lupinus albus and Lupinus angustifolius], field peas [Phaseolus vulgaris], faba beans [Vicia faba] and chickpeas [Cicer arietinum]) and their nutrient content, the presence of antinutritional factors, processing methods and feeding value, including updated data based on recent research findings.

We report a dual-polarization radio frequency (RF) channelizer based on microcombs. With the tailored mismatch between the FSRs of the active and passive MRRs, wideband RF spectra can be channelized into multiple segments featuring digital-compatible bandwidths via the Vernier effect. Due to the use of dual-polarization states, the number of channelized spectral segments, and thus the RF instantaneous bandwidth (with a certain spectral resolution), can be doubled. In our experiments, we used 20 microcomb lines with ~ 49 GHz FSR to achieve 20 channels for each polarization, with high RF spectra slicing resolutions at 144 MHz (TE) and 163 MHz (TM), respectively; achieving an instantaneous RF operation bandwidth of 3.1 GHz (TE) and 2.2 GHz (TM). Our approach paves the path towards monolithically integrated photonic RF receivers (the key components—active and passive MRRs are all fabricated on the same platform) with reduced complexity, size, and unprecedented performance, which is important for wide RF applications with digital-compatible signal detection.

Interhemispheric and frontoparietal functional connectivity have been reported to increase during explicit information processing. However, it is unclear how and when interhemispheric and frontoparietal functional connectivity interact during explicit semantic processing. Here, we tested the neural coupling hypothesis that explicit semantic processing promotes neural activity in the nondominant right hemispheric areas owing to synchronization with enhanced frontoparietal functional connectivity at later processing stages. We analyzed electroencephalogram data obtained using a semantic priming paradigm, which comprised visual priming and target words successively presented under direct or indirect attention to semantic association. Scalp potential analysis demonstrated that the explicit processing of congruent targets reduced negative event-related potentials, as previously reported. Current source density analysis showed that explicit semantic processing activated the right temporal area during later temporal intervals. Subsequent dynamic functional connectivity and neural coupling analyses revealed that explicit semantic processing increased the correlation between right temporal source activities and frontoparietal functional connectivity in later temporal intervals. These findings indicate that explicit semantic processing increases neural coupling between the interhemispheric and frontoparietal functional connectivity during later processing stages.

In recent decades, microwave photonic channelization has developed rapidly. Characterized by low loss, high versatility, large instantaneous bandwidth, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, microwave photonic channelization techniques coincides with the requirements of modern radar and electronic warfare for receivers. The advanced microresonator-based optical frequency combs are promising platforms for the research of the photonic channelized receivers, which take full advantage of multicarrier and large bandwidth, and accelerate the integration process of microwave photonic channelized receivers. In this paper, we review the research progress and trends in microwave photonic channelization, focusing on schemes that utilize integrated microcombs. Finally, we discuss the potentials of microcomb-based RF channelization, as well as the challenges and limitations, and provide routes and perspectives for future developments in the context of on-chip silicon-based photonics.

The graph model enables a broad range of analysis, thus graph processing is an invaluable tool in data analytics. At the heart of every graph processing system lies a concurrent graph data structure that stores the graph. Such a data structure needs to be highly efficient for both graph algorithms and queries. Due to the continuous evolution, the sparsity, and the scale-free nature of real-world graphs, graph processing systems face the challenge of providing an appropriate graph data structure that enables both fast analytical workloads and low-memory fast graph mutations. Existing graph structures offer a hard tradeoff between read-only performance, update friendliness, and memory consumption upon updates. In this paper, we introduce CSR++, a new graph data structure that removes these tradeoffs and enables both fast read-only analytics and quick and memory-friendly mutations. CSR++ combines ideas from CSR, the fastest read-only data structure, and adjacency lists to achieve the best of both worlds. We compare CSR++ to CSR, adjacency lists from the Boost Graph Library, as well as state-of-the-art update-friendly graph structures: LLAMA, STINGER, GraphOne, and Teseo. In our evaluation, which is based on popular graph processing algorithms executed over real-world graphs, we show that CSR++ remains close to CSR in read-only concurrent performance (within 10% on average), while significantly outperforming CSR (by an order of magnitude) and LLAMA (by almost 2×) with frequent updates. We also show that both CSR++’s update throughput and analytics performance exceed that of several state-of-the-art graph structures, while maintaining low memory consumption when the workload includes updates.

Commercially available multispectral and thermal imagers are commonly deployed for environmental monitoring on small uncrewed aerial systems (sUAS, <55 lbs). Our team assessed the challenges of deploying these imagers on a Group 3 classification UAS (weight: 55-1320 lbs, maximum altitude: 18,000 ft MSL, maximum speed: 250 kts) for the purpose of land-atmosphere interaction studies. A Micasense Altum multispectral imager was deployed on two very similar mid-sized (Group 3) UAS, a Mississippi State University (MSU) TigerShark XP and the Department of Energy (DOE) ArcticShark. This paper examines the effects of flight on imaging systems mounted on UASs flying at higher altitudes, faster speeds, and for longer duration, which near future technology will make more the norm. For these platforms we found that the acquisition rate may need to be higher to achieve a minimum 75% overlap, as required by certain post-processing algorithms. Additionally pre-flight calibration panel referencing was found to be problematic for converting flight images to reflectance, due to the changing illumination conditions during the extended duration flights. We developed an automated workflow to correct the image frames via data from an onboard hemispherical solar sensor mounted on the top of the airframe, and we assessed these data against known spectral ground targets and independent sources. Finally, this manuscript may be used as a reference for collecting similar datasets in the future. The datasets described within this manuscript may be used as a starting point for future research.

Microwave transversal filters, which are implemented based on the transversal filter structure in digital signal processing, offer a high reconfigurability for achieving a variety of signal processing functions without changing hardware. When implemented using microwave photonic (MWP) technologies, also known as MWP transversal filters, they provide competitive advantages over their electrical counterparts, such as low loss, large operation bandwidth, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. Recent advances in high-performance optical microcombs provide compact and powerful multi-wavelength sources for MWP transversal filters that require a larger number of wavelength channels to achieve high performance, allowing for the demonstration of a diverse range of filter functions with improved performance and new features. Here, we present a comprehensive performance analysis for microcomb-based MWP spectral filters based on the transversal filter approach. First, we investigate the theoretical limitations in the filter spectral response induced by finite tap numbers. Next, we analyze the distortions in the filter spectral response resulting from experimental error sources. Finally, we assess the influence of input signal’s bandwidth on the filtering errors. These results provide a valuable guide for the design and optimization of microcomb-based MWP transversal filters for a variety of applications.

Abstract. Indonesia has developed several superior soybean varieties. Each soybean variety has different physical and chemical properties that can affect processed products and soybean quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical, chemical, and functional properties of three superior early-maturing soybean varieties. The research was conducted in Maros, Indonesia in 2022 by planting the Dega-1, Grobogan, and Gepak Kuning varieties and repeated them 6 times. The yields of the three soybean varieties Dega-1, Grobogan, and Gepak Kuning were taken at 1 kg each and 3 repeated, then further analysis of chemical compounds is carried out in the laboratory. The results showed that for physical characteristics, the largest seed size was in Dega-1 (18.57 g per 100 seeds) and the smallest in Gepak Kuning (8.29 g). The highest bulk density of soybean seeds was in the Grobogan and Dega-1 varieties (0.79 kg per m3) and the lowest was in Gepak Kuning (0.77 kg per m3 ), and the lowest number of damaged seeds was in Dega-1 (6.67%) and the highest in Grobogan (11.33). %). Chemical characteristics, highest protein content in Gepak Kuning (39.72%) and lowest in Dega-1 (36.62%), lowest fat content in Dega-1 (12.63%) and highest in Gepak Kuning (14.49%), highest phosphorus content in Gepak Kuning (0.59%) and the lowest was in Grobogan (0.53%), the highest calcium content was in Gepak Kuning (0.40%), and the highest FFA value was in Dega-1 (0.93) and the lowest in Gepak Kuning (0.81). Based on physical properties, Dega-1 is the best compared to the other two soybeans. Meanwhile, based on the size of starch granules, Gepak Kuning gave the best results. For chemical characteristics, in general, GepakKuning has the best quality compared to Grobogan and Dega-1. It can be concluded that Gepak Kuning has the most potential to be developed in supporting food and non-food products, especially in Indonesia.

Microwave photonic (MWP) transversal signal processors offer a compelling solution for realizing versatile high-speed information processing by combining the advantages of reconfigurable electrical digital signal processing and high-bandwidth photonic processing. With the capability of generating a number of discrete wavelengths from micro-scale resonators, optical microcombs are powerful multi-wavelength sources for implementing MWP transversal signal processors with significantly reduced size, power consumption, and complexity. By using microcomb-based MWP transversal signal processors, a diverse range of signal processing functions have been demonstrated recently. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis for the processing inaccuracy that are induced by the imperfect response of experimental components. First, we investigate the errors arising from different sources including imperfections in the microcombs, the chirp of electro-optic modulators, chromatic dispersion of the dispersive module, shaping errors of the optical spectral shapers, and noise of the photodetector. Next, we provide a global picture quantifying the impact of different error sources on the overall system performance. Finally, we introduce feedback control to compensate the errors caused by experimental imperfections and achieve significantly improved accuracy. These results provide a guide for optimizing the accuracy of microcomb-based MWP transversal signal processors.

Retweet prediction is an important task related to different problems such as information spreading analysis, the automatic detection of fake news, social media monitoring, etc. In this study we explore the possibilities of retweet prediction based on heterogeneous data sources. In order to classify the tweet according to the amount of retweets, we combine features extracted from the multilayer network and the text. More specifically, we introduce a multilayer framework that proposes the multilayer network representation of Twitter. This formalism captures different users' actions and complex relationships as well as other key properties of communication on Twitter. We select a set of local network measures from each layer and construct a set of multilayer network features. In addition, we adopt a BERT-based language model, namely Cro-CoV-cseBERT to capture high-level semantics and structure of tweets as a set of text features. Then, we train six machine learning (ML) algorithms: random forest, multilayer perceptron, light gradient boosting machine, category embedding model, neural oblivious decision ensembles and attentive interpretable tabular learning model in the task of retweet prediction. We compare the performance of all six algorithms in three different setups (i) using only text features, (ii) using only multilayer network features and (iii) using both sets of features. We evaluate all setups in terms of standard evaluation measures i.e. precision, recall, F1-score and accuracy. For this task, we first prepare and use an empirical dataset of 199,431 tweets in the Croatian language posted during the period between January 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021. Our results indicate that by integrating multilayer network features with text features the prediction model would perform better than using just one set of features.

In the past decades, a significant rise in the adoption of streaming applications has changed the decision-making process for the industry and academia sectors. This movement led to the emergence of a plurality of Big Data technologies such as Apache Storm, Spark, Heron, Samza, Flink, and other systems to provide in-memory processing for real-time Big Data analysis at high throughput. Spark Streaming represents one of the most popular open-source implementations which handles an ever-increasing data ingestion and processing by using the Unified Memory Manager to manage memory occupancy between storage and processing regions dynamically, which is the focus of this study. The problem behind memory management for data-intensive stream processing pipelines is that the incoming data is faster than the downstream operators can consume. Consequently, the backpressure of Spark acts in the opposite direction of downstream operators. In such a case, the incoming data overwhelms the memory manager and provokes memory leak issues. As a result, it affects the performance of applications generating, e.g., high latency, low throughput, or even data loss. In such a case, the initial intuition motivating our work is that memory management became the critical factor in keeping processing at scale and system stability of Spark. This work provides a deep dive into Spark backpressure, evaluates its structure, presents the main characteristics to support data-intensive streaming pipelines, and investigates the current in-memory-based performance issues.

Documenting cultural heritage by using artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for preserving the memory of the past and a key point for future knowledge. However, modern AI technologies make use of statistical learners that lead to self-empiricist logic, which, unlike human minds, use learned non-symbolic representations. Nevertheless, it seems that it is not the right way to progress in AI. If we want to rely on AI for these tasks, it is essential to understand what lies behind these models. Among the ways to discover AI there are the senses and the intellect. We could consider AI as an intelligence. Intelligence has an essence, but we do not know whether it can be considered “something” or “someone”. Important issues in the analysis of AI concern the structure of symbols -operations with which the intellectual solution is carried out- and the search for strategic reference points, aspiring to create models with human-like intelligence. For many years, humans, seeing language as innate, have carried out symbolic theories. Everything seems to have skipped with the advent of Machine Learning. In this paper, after a long analysis of history, the rule-based and the learning-based vision, we propose KERMIT as a unit of investigation for a possible meeting point between the different learning theories. Finally, we propose a new vision of knowledge in AI models based on a combination of rules, learning and human knowledge.

The Open Access (OA) publishing model that is based on article processing charges (APC) is often associated with the potential for more transparency regarding the expenditures for publications. However, the extent to which transparency can be achieved depends not least on the completeness of data in APC monitoring systems. This article investigates two blind spots of the largest collection of APC payment information, OpenAPC. It aims to identify likely APC-liable publications for German universities that contribute to this system and for those that do not provide data to it. The calculation combines data from Web of Science, the ISSN-Gold-OA-list and OpenAPC. The results show that for the group of universities contributing to the monitoring system, more than half of the APC payments are not covered by it and the average payments for non-covered APCs is higher than for APCs covered by the system. In addition, the group of universities that does not contribute to OpenAPC accounts for two thirds of the number of APC-liable publications recorded for contributing universities. Regarding the size of these blind spots, the value of the monitoring system is limited at present.

Recent years have seen the growing adoption of non-relational data models for representing diverse, incomplete data. Among these, the RDF graph-based data model has seen ever-broadening adoption, particularly on the Web. This adoption has prompted the standardization of the SPARQL query language for RDF, as well as the development of a variety of local and distributed engines for processing queries over RDF graphs. These engines implement a diverse range of specialized techniques for storage, indexing, and query processing. A number of benchmarks, based on both synthetic and real-world data, have also emerged to allow for contrasting the performance of different query engines, often at large scale. This survey paper draws together these developments, providing a comprehensive review of the techniques, engines and benchmarks for querying RDF knowledge graphs.

Deep neural networks are hegemonic approaches to many machine learning areas, including natural language processing (NLP). Thanks to the availability of large corpora collections and the capability of deep architectures to shape internal language mechanisms in self-supervised learning processes (also known as "pre-training"), versatile and performing models are released continuously for every new network design. But these networks, somehow, learn a probability distribution of words and relations across the training collection used, inheriting the potential flaws, inconsistencies and biases contained in such a collection. As pre-trained models have found to be very useful approaches to transfer learning, dealing with bias has become a relevant issue in this new scenario. We introduce bias in a formal way and explore how it has been treated in several networks, in terms of detection and correction. Also, available resources are identified and a strategy to deal with bias in deep NLP is proposed.

For the first time in scientific and engineering practice, it is logically and mathematically substantiated, computationally verified and metrologically confirmed that classic and quantum physics, analytical and quantum chemistry, as well as continuous symbolic and discrete digital mathematical analysis, all have computational limits of information entropy, upper 1/10^16 and lower 1/10^64. Mutual displacement of these limits relatively center of Euclidean three-dimensional and of Cartesian two-dimensional space generate sets of quantum dots of mesh topology and weighted average harmonic units of quantum metrics of internal atomic and outer cosmic space, as well as determines limits of communication speed, clock frequency, calculation power and accuracy for any computing machine with subatomic elements of memory. The matrices of functional density and entropy of energy and information fields reconciles classic and quantum physics with continuous and discrete mathematics of special and general relativity.

The recently proposed and logically developed paradigm of deep genetical affinity of scientific terms "energy-entropy-information" harmonizes classical and quantum physics with general and special theories of relativity. For the first time in engineering practice, a complex vector-tensor-matrix description of gravitational, thermal and electromagnetic fields in ideal solid, liquid and gaseous media was performed analytically and without preliminary measurements. The basic set of fundamental quantum constants of the standard physical model has been computed with an extreme precision of 1/10^64, which is a natural limit arising due to elementary recursive arithmetic and elementary functional analysis in digital notation.

We demonstrate a photonic RF integrator based on an integrated soliton crystal micro-comb source. By multicasting and progressively delaying the input RF signal using a transversal structure, the input RF signal is integrated discretely. Up to 81 wavelengths are provided by the microcomb source, which enable a large integration time window of ~6.8 ns, together with a time resolution as fast as ~84 ps. We perform signal integration of a diverse range of input RF signals including Gaussian pulses with varying time widths, dual pulses with varying time intervals and a square waveform. The experimental results show good agreement with theory. These results verify our microcomb-based integrator as a competitive approach for RF signal integration with high performance and potentially lower cost and footprint.

In this paper, the effect of multi-pass friction stir processing on the mechanical properties of AZ91 alloy has been studied. For the numerical investigation, this process has been simulated with the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on the ABAQUS/Explicit. This simulation involves the Johnson-Cook models for defining the material behavior during this intense plastic deformation and investigating the fracture criterion. The tool plunging and stirring phases in the two-pass process has been simulated. To prevent too much distortion of elements during modeling, the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian technique for automatically re-meshing of distorted elements has been used. The model was calibrated using the experimental results from the previous works. This model can predict the transient temperature distribution and residual stress field during FSP on AZ91. The results show that the maximum temperature in the advancing-side region is more than that in the retreating-side region. In addition, numerical results show that at the end position of the process, the tool during the lift-up leaves the keyhole region in the compressive stress state. The experimental results investigated the effect of multi-pass FSP on the microstructure, microhardness, tensile and creep properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy. The FSP is performed by applying 50% overlapping. The tensile, and creep tests are conducted at several temperatures from 25 to 210 °C. The optical microscopy and scanning electron micrograph (SEM) were used to study the microstructure of the samples after performing multi-pass friction stir processing. The experimental results indicate that on average, the tensile strength, microhardness, and creep strength of the processed samples increased by about 29, 23, and 38 %, respectively compared to the unprocessed ones.

RAxML-NG is a new phylogentic inference tool that replaces the widely-used RAxML and ExaMLtree inference codes. Compared to its predecessors, RAxML-NG offers improvements in accur-acy, flexibility, speed, scalability, and user-friendliness. In this chapter, we provide practicalrecommendations for the most common use cases of RAxML-NG: tree inference, branch supportestimation via non-parametric bootstrapping, and parameter optimization on a fixed tree topo-logy. We also describe best practices for achieving optimal performance with RAxML-NG, inparticular, with respect to parallel tree inferences on computer clusters and supercomputers. We generalize the point information gain (PIG) and derived quantities, i.e., point information gain entropy (PIE) and point information gain entropy density (PIED), for the case of the Rényi entropy and simulate the behavior of PIG for typical distributions. We also use these methods for the analysis of multidimensional datasets. We demonstrate the main properties of PIE/PIED spectra for the real data on the example of several images, and discuss further possible utilizations in other fields of data processing.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is common in the elderly. This paper introduces the overview of Alzheimer's disease and the application of relevant signal processing methods in its detection. Signal processing is a technique that converts raw data into meaningful information and is widely used in the medical field. This paper lists common signal processing techniques, including Fourier transform, time-frequency analysis and statistical signal processing, and discusses their applications in the detection of Alzheimer's disease. Fourier transform can convert time domain signals into frequency domain representations, providing an effective tool for the study of EEG in Alzheimer's disease. Time-frequency analysis can perform a combined time and frequency analysis of the signal to help detect the signal characteristics of Alzheimer's disease. Statistical signal processing methods can be used to identify the features of Alzheimer's disease by building mathematical models. Finally, the challenges of Alzheimer's disease detection are discussed, including signal noise, diversity, and insufficient data volume. Through in-depth research and development of signal processing methods, it is expected to improve the accuracy and efficiency of early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

This research delves into the realm of predictive modeling within artificial intelligence (AI) and introduces an innovative ensemble approach designed to enhance prognostic precision. The proposed methodology, characterized by its ebullient nature, leverages the collective wisdom of diverse predictive models, synthesizing a comprehensive and robust framework. The pursuit of parsimony are paramount, underscoring the need for efficient model architectures that balance predictive acuracy and computational efficiency. Our study meticulously explores the amalgamation of diverse algorithms, encapsulating the intrinsic complexity of real-world phenomena. We navigate the intricate landscape of feature selection, algorithmic diversity, and model combination, fostering a holistic understanding of the prognostic process. The ebullient ensemble emerges as a dynamic solution, harnessing the synergy of constituent models while mitigating the risk of overfitting. To validate the efficacy of our approach, extensive experiments are conducted on diverse datasets, spanning domains such as healthcare, finance, and natural language processing. Comparative analyses demonstrate the superior predictive performance of our ensemble model in comparison to individual algorithms and traditional ensemble methods. Additionally, we delve into interpretability aspects, elucidating the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the model's prognostic prowess. Our research advances the frontier of predictive modeling in AI, offering a nuanced and sophisticated paradigm for prognostication. The ebullient ensemble approach stands as a testament to the synergy achievable through the amalgamation of diverse predictive models, providing a pragmatic and parsimonious avenue for enhanced prognostic acuracy in artificial intelligence applications.

Explainability is essential for AI models, especially in clinical settings where understanding the model's decisions is crucial. Despite their impressive performance, black-box AI models are unsuitable for clinical use if their operations cannot be explained to clinicians. While deep neural networks (DNNs) represent the forefront of model performance, their explanations are often not easily interpretable by humans. On the other hand, using hand-crafted features extracted to represent different aspects of the input data and traditional machine learning models are generally more understandable. However, they often lack the effectiveness of advanced models due to human limitations in feature design. To address this, we propose ExShall-CNN, a novel explainable shallow convolutional neural network for medical image processing. This model enhances hand-crafted features to maintain human interpretability while achieving performance levels comparable to advanced deep convolutional networks, such as U-Net, for medical image segmentation. Deep learning methods have been widely applied to time series classification tasks. Although deep learning methods perform excellently on these tasks, they require much training data. Labeling time series data for training is very time-consuming and labor-intensive. Active learning can be used to select the most informative data for labeling in time series classification tasks to save human labeling efforts. In this paper, we propose a new active learning (AL) framework for time series data. First, a temporal classifier for pixel-level temporal classification tasks is designed. Next, We propose an effective active learning method to select informative time series samples for labeling, which combines representativeness and uncertainty. For representativeness, We use the K-shape method to cluster time series data. For uncertainty, we construct an auxiliary deep network to evaluate the uncertainty of unlabeled data. The features of the middle hidden layer with rich temporal information of the classifier will be fed into the auxiliary deep network, which is equipped with a self-attention mechanism to utilize the temporal dependencies of time series data fully. Then, we define a new loss function with the aim of improving the deep model’s performance. Finally, the proposed method in this paper was evaluated on two temporal remote-sensing image datasets. Resilience is an important determinant of the quality of life in adults, among others in the sphere of cognitive activities. Developments in brain imaging technology make it possible to acquire a more accurate understanding of the neuronal mechanisms of these correlations. The aim of this study was to verify whether the level of mental resilience would differentiate reading comprehension performance when using different information carriers. More than 150 adults were surveyed with the use of two questionnaires (original and standardised) and near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The results obtained did not show differences in correct responses between the groups of individuals with different levels of resilience, however, the results in the group of subjects with moderate levels were differentiated by the type of carrier. Further analysis showed that the results referred to above resulted from different neuronal mechanisms. The differences affected many areas of the brain and also depended on the type of information carrier (medium). They affected, among others, attentional areas as well as areas directly involved in the reading process. This may result in increased energy consumption during the examined activities, which can result in greater fatigue, accelerated job burnout and progressive concentration difficulties.

Our study focused on investigating the impact of Instagram use on body satisfaction and self-esteem among participants aged 20 to 40 years (N = 95) through a cross-sectional survey design in which the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), and ad hoc designed questions were administered. The results highlight the influence of Instagram on body dissatisfaction (p = .005) but not on self-esteem (p = .211). Gender was not found to be an influential factor (p = .173). However, it was found that greater body satisfaction correlates with higher self-esteem and vice versa (p < .001). Finally, we concluded that the number of hours users in the sample spend on Instagram is related to greater body dissatisfaction but not to lower self-esteem.

A free-fall baited camera lander was launched for the first time on the Cosmonaut Sea shelf of East Antarctica at the depth of 694 m during the 38th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) in 2022. We identified 31 unique taxa (23 of invertebrates and 8 of fishes) belonging to 8 phyla from 2403 pictures and 40 videos. The Antarctic jonasfish (Notolepis coatsi) was the most frequently observed fish taxa. Ten species of vulnerable marine ecosystem (VME) taxa were observed, accounting for 32% of all species. The maximum number (MaxN) of Natatolana meridionalis individuals per image frame was ten, and they were attracted to the bait. The macrobenthic community type was sessile suspension feeders with associated fauna (SSFA), which was shaped by the muddy substrata with scattered rocks. Rocks served as the best habitats for sessile fauna. The study reveals the megafauna community and their habitat by image survey in the Cosmonaut Sea for the first time. It helped us obtain Antarctic biodiversity baselines and monitoring data for future’s ecosystem health assessment and better protection.

Olive fruits at different ripening stages give rise to various table olive products and oil qualities. Therefore, developing an efficient method for recognizing and sorting olive fruits based on their ripening stages can greatly facilitate postharvest processing. This study introduces an automatic computer vision system that utilizes deep learning technology to classify the `Roghani` Iranian olive cultivar into five ripening stages using color images. The developed model employs convolutional neural networks (CNN) and transfer learning based on the Xception architecture and ImageNet weights as the base network. The model was fine-tuned by testing multiple configurations of well-known CNN layers. To minimize overfitting and enhance model generality, data augmentation techniques were employed. By considering different optimizers and two image sizes, four final candidate models were generated. These models were then compared in terms of loss and accuracy on the test dataset, classification performance (classification report and confusion matrix), and generality. All four candidates exhibited high accuracies ranging from 86.93% to 93.46% and comparable classification performance. In all models, at least one class was recognized with 100% accuracy. However, by taking into account the risk of overfitting, two models were discarded. Finally, a model with an image size of 224 × 224 and an SGD optimizer, which had a loss of 1.23 and an accuracy of 86.93%, was selected as the preferred option. The results of this study offer robust tools for automatic olive sorting systems, simplifying the differentiation of olives at various ripening levels for different post-harvest products.

In recent years, significant advancements in the field of machine learning have influenced the domain of image restoration. While these technological advancements present prospects for improving the quality of images, they also present difficulties, particularly the proliferation of manipulated or counterfeit multimedia information on the internet. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of existing inpainting algorithms and forgery detections, with a specific emphasis on techniques that are designed for the purpose of removing objects from digital images. In this study, we will examine various techniques encompassing conventional texture synthesis methods, as well as those based on neural networks. Furthermore, we will explore the artifacts associated with the identification of modified photos and present the artifacts frequently introduced by the inpainting procedure and assess the state-of-the-art technology for detecting such modifications. Lastly, we shall look at the available datasets and how the methods compare with each other. Having covered all of the above, the final outcome of this study is to provide a comprehensive perspective on the abilities and constraints to detect images for which an inpainting object removal method was applied.

The study focuses on the crucial aspect of lossless compression for FAST pulsar search data. The deep generative model PixelCNN, stacking multiple masked convolutional layers, achieves neural network autoregressive modeling, making it one of the most excellent image density estimators. However, the local nature of convolutional networks causes PixelCNN to concentrate only on nearby information, neglecting important information at greater distances. Although deepening the network can broaden the receptive field, excessive depth can compromise model stability, leading to issues like gradient degradation. To address these challenges, the study combines causal attention modules with residual connections, proposing the Causal Residual Attention Module to enhance the PixelCNN model. This innovation not only resolves convergence problems arising from network deepening but also widens the receptive field. It effectively utilizes global features, particularly capturing vertically correlated features prominently present in subgraphs of candidates. This significantly enhances its capability to model pulsar data.In the experiments, the model is trained and validated using the HTRU1 dataset. The study compares the average negative log-likelihood score with baseline models like GMM, STM, and PixelCNN. The results demonstrate the superior performance of the our model over other models. Finally, the study introduces the practical compression encoding process by combining the proposed model with arithmetic coding.

Many university female students are concerned about their bodies. Body image perception has become a public health issue globally. This study aimed to explore factors contributing to body image dissatisfaction among female students at the University of Venda. The study was qualitative in nature and employed exploratory research design. A sample of 10 female students enrolled at the University of Venda were identified using convenience sampling method. A pre-tested, semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data and thematic content analysis technique was used to analyse the collected data. The findings of the study showed that body comparison, societal beauty standards, social media, and body shaming by family and friends were the main factors contributing to student’s body image dissatisfaction. The findings further revealed that lack of self-confidence, stress, avoidance, anxiety and depressive symptoms were the challenges faced by students with body image dissatisfaction. Acceptance. Self-care, and healthy diet were identified as coping strategies to help deal with the challenges of student’s body image dissatisfaction. Conclusively, students should be encouraged to seek professional help timeously, to help navigate their body image concerns to avoid decline in their daily functioning.

Colombia is noteworthy as a biodiversity hotspot, featuring an extraordinary number of en-demic orchids, birds, and butterflies. This exploratory study examines the perceptions of desti-nation image considering the cognitive and affective image in predicting behavioral intentions of ecotourists through symmetric data analysis. Using Partial Least Squares (PLS), the author(s) analyzed 64 survey responses collected of rural areas, including a new 15 statement scale spe-cialized on birdwatching. The findings support the reliability of the model, symmetric analysis presents the higher influence of emotions and affections in increasing intentions of recommen-dation, considering birdwatching as based on personal relationships. Additionally, the cognitive image for the birders despite representing destination attributes or sets of destination resources of a mental picture does not have the same impact on behavioral intentions. Therefore, manag-ers should develop positioning strategies based on the generation of emotions, because bird-watching tourists seek to have more emotional experiences.

In this study, we explore the potential of using a straightforward neural network inspired by the retina model to efficiently restore low-light images. The retina model imitates the neurophysiological principles and dynamics of various optical neurons. Our proposed neural network model reduces the computational overhead compared to traditional signal-processing models while achieving results similar to complex deep learning models from a subjective perceptual perspective. By directly simulating retinal neuron functionalities with neural networks, we not only avoid manual parameter optimization but also lay the groundwork for constructing artificial versions of specific neurobiological organizations.

Recent advancements in Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly in Large Language Models (LLMs), associated with deep learning-based computer vision techniques, have shown substantial potential for automating a variety of tasks. One notable model is Visual ChatGPT, which combines ChatGPT’s LLM capabilities with visual computation to enable effective image analysis. The model’s ability to process images based on textual inputs can revolutionize diverse fields. However, its application in the remote sensing domain remains unexplored. This is the first paper to examine the potential of Visual ChatGPT, a cutting-edge LLM founded on the GPT architecture, to tackle the aspects of image processing related to the remote sensing domain. Among its current capabilities, Visual ChatGPT can generate textual descriptions of images, perform canny edge and straight line detection, and conduct image segmentation. These offer valuable insights into image content and facilitate the interpretation and extraction of information. By exploring the applicability of these techniques within publicly available datasets of satellite images, we demonstrate the current model’s limitations in dealing with remote sensing images, highlighting its challenges and future prospects. Although still in early development, we believe that the combination of LLMs and visual models holds a significant potential to transform remote sensing image processing, creating accessible and practical application opportunities in the field.

Vision loss can be avoided if diabetic retinopathy (DR) is diagnosed and treated promptly. Following are the main 5 DR stages: none, moderate, mild, proliferate, and severe. In this study, a deep learning (DL) model is presented that diagnoses all 5 stages of DR with more accuracy than previous methods. The suggested method presents two scenarios: case 1 with image enhancement using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) filtering algorithm in conjunction with an Enhanced Super-resolution generative adversarial network (ESRGAN), and case 2 without image enhancement; augmentation techniques are then performed to generate a balanced dataset utilizing the same parameters for both cases. Using Inception-V3 applied to the Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society (APTOS) datasets, the developed model achieved an accuracy of 98.7% for case 1 and 80.87% for case 2, which is greater than existing methods for detecting the five stages of DR. It was demonstrated that using CLAHE and ESRGAN improves a model's performance and learning ability.

In the field of forensic imaging, it is important to be able to extract a “camera fingerprint” from one or a small set of images known to have been taken by the same camera (image sensor). Ideally, that fingerprint would be used to identify an individual source camera. Camera fingerprint is based on certain kind of random noise present in all image sensors that is due to manufacturing imperfections and thus unique and impossible to avoid. PRNU (Photo-Response Non-Uniformity) has become the most widely used method for SCI (Source Camera Identification). In this paper, we design a set of “attacks” to a PRNU based SCI system and we measure the success of each method. We understand an attack method as any processing that alters minimally image quality and that is designed to fool PRNU detectors (or, generalizing, any camera fingerprint detector). The PRNU based SCI system was taken from an outstanding reference that is publicly available.

Depth maps produced by LiDAR based approaches are sparse. Even high-end LiDAR sensors produce highly sparse depth maps, which are also noisy around the object boundaries. Depth completion is the task of generating a dense depth map from a sparse depth map. While the traditional approaches focus on directly completing this sparsity from the sparse depth maps, modern techniques use RGB images as a guidance tool to resolve this problem. Whilst many others rely on affinity matrices for depth completion. Based on these approaches, we have sub-divided the literature into two major categories; traditional approaches and backbone-based approaches. The latter is further sub-divided into two-branch, and spatial propagation approaches. The two-branch approaches still have a sub-category named guided-kernel approaches. In this paper, for the first time ever we present a comprehensive survey of depth completion methods. We present a novel taxonomy of depth completion approaches, review and detail different state-of-the art techniques within each category for depth completion of LiDAR data, and provide quantitative results for the approaches on KITTI and NYUv2 depth completion benchmark datasets.

Video editing is a high-required job, for it requires skilled artists or workers equipped with plentiful physical strength and multidisciplinary knowledge, such as cinematography, aesthetics. Thus gradually, more and more researches focus on proposing semi-automatical and even fully automatical solutions to reduce workloads. Since those conventional methods are usually designed to follow some simple guidelines, they lack flexibility and capability to learn complex ones. Fortunately, the advances of computer vision and machine learning make up the shortages of traditional approaches and make AI editing feasible. There is no survey to conclude those emerging researches yet. This paper summaries the development history of automatic video editing, and especially the applications of AI in partial and full workflows. We emphasizes video editing and discuss related works from multiple aspects: modality, type of input videos, methology, optimization, dataset, and evaluation metric. Besides, we also summarize the progresses in image editing domain, i.e., style transferring, retargeting, and colorization, and seek for the possibility to transfer those techniques to video domain. Finally, we give a brief conclusion about this survey and explore some open problems.

Microscopes based on dielectric mesoscale particles, using the effect of a photonic jet or terajet in the terahertz range, are a promising tool for overcoming the diffraction limit. However, the image they generate has limited contrast, which limits the application of this method. In this letter, we demonstrate that it is possible to increase the contrast of an image based on dielectric mesoscale particles that provide the formation of photonic hooks. In this case, the illumination of the object is carried out by an oblique incidence of subwavelength terajet, which significantly (more than 2 times) increases the contrast of the image.

Forest fire identification is important for forest resource protection. Effective monitoring of forest fires requires the deployment of multiple monitors with different viewpoints, while most traditional recognition models can only recognize images from a single source. By ignoring the information from images with different viewpoints, these models produce high rates of missed and false alarms. In this paper, we propose a graph neural network model based on the similarity of dynamic features of multi-view images to improve the accuracy of forest fire recognition. The input features of the nodes on the graph are converted into relational features of different gallery pairs by establishing pairs (nodes) representing different viewpoint images and gallery images. The new feature library relationship is used to update the image gallery with dynamic features in order to achieve the estimation of similarity between images and improve the image recognition rate of the model. In addition, to reduce the complexity of image pre-processing process and extract key features in images effectively, this paper also proposes a dynamic feature extraction method for fire regions based on image segment ability. By setting the threshold value of HSV color space, the fire region is segmented from the image, and the dynamic features of successive frames of the fire region are extracted. The experimental results show that, compared with the baseline method Resnet, this paper's method is more effective in identifying forest fires, and its recognition accuracy is improved by 2%. And the scheme of this paper can adapt to different forest fire scenes, with better generalization ability and anti-interference ability.

The concept of destination image is closely related to the brand image of the destination. A good image is a step in branding the destination. The image of the destination can be a primary, sec-ondary or global one, the latter incorporating the first two. The sustainability of a positive image of the destination is based on both a positive secondary image and a positive global image. The purpose of this research is to analyze separately the two types of images for a given tourist des-tination that has registered in recent years a remarkable increase in the number of visitors. The research is based on a questionnaire-based survey of a sample of 607 people. The collected data were processed with SPSS and the results show significant differences between the two types of images (secondary image and global image), a dangerous situation in the medium and long term for destination management. The nuances in the perception of the image of the destination on the two types of respondents (who experienced respectively who did not experience the destination) can be explained by the aggressive strategy of promoting the tourist destination, but inefficient strategy for younger age groups. The study allows the formulation of conclusions and measures to correct the situation.

The genetic development of commercial broiler led to body misconfiguration and consequent walking disabilities, mainly at the slaughter age. The present study aimed to identify broiler locomotion ability using image analysis automatically. A total of 40 broiler 40 d-old were placed to walk on a specially built runway, and their locomotion was recorded. An image segmentation algorithm was developed, and the coordinates of the bird's center of mass were extracted from the segmented images for each frame analyzed, and the Unrest Index (UI) was applied. We calculated the center of mass's movement of the broiler walking's lateral images, therefore, capturing the bird's displacement speed in the onward direction. Results indicated that broiler speed on the runway tends to decrease with the increase of the gait score. The locomotion did not differ between males or females. The proposed algorithm was efficient if predicting the broiler gait score based on their displacement speed.

This work presents an analytical methodology to predict meat juiciness (discriminant semi-quantitative analysis using groups of intervals of intramuscular fat) and intramuscular fat (regression analysis) in Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle of Bísaro pigs using as independent variables the animal carcass weight and parameters from color and image analysis. These are non-invasive and non-destructive techniques which allow development of rapid, easy and inexpensive methodologies to evaluate pork meat quality in a slaughterhouse. The proposed predictive supervised multivariate models were non-linear. Discriminant mixture analysis to evaluate meat juiciness by classified samples into three groups—0.6 to 1.1%; 1.25 to 1.5%; and, greater than 1.5%. The obtained model allowed 100% of correct classifications (92% in cross-validation with seven-folds with five repetitions). Polynomial support vector machine regression to determine the intramuscular fat presented R2 and RMSE values of 0.88 and 0.12, respectively in cross-validation with seven-folds with five repetitions. This quantitative model (model’s polynomial kernel optimized to degree of three with a scale factor of 0.1 and a cost value of one) presented R2 and RSE values of 0.999 and 0.04, respectively. The overall predictive results demonstrated the relevance of photographic image and color measurements of the muscle to evaluate the intramuscular fat, rarther than the usual time-consuming and expensive chemical analysis.

In rye, there is a considerable variety of grain color which is determined by the diversity of compounds localized in different parts of the grain (caryopsis) - pericarp, testa, and aleurone. The localization of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins was analyzed in 26 rye samples with identified anthocyanin genes, along with the analysis of CIE color coordinates. The Grain Scan program [1] was used to analyze images of individual grains. The localization of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins was studied on longitudinal and cross sections of grains using light microscopy and MALDI-imaging. The violet-grained samples contain anthocyanins in the pericarp, and the green-grained samples contain anthocyanins in the aleurone layer. The green, violet and yellow-grained rye, with the exception of two anthocyaninless mutants vi3 and vi6, shows the presence of proanthocyanidins in the brown-colored testa. Four main color groups of the rye grains (yellow, green, brown, violet) could be differentiated using the color coordinate h° (hue angle). Interspecies and intraspecies variability for the localization of colored flavonoids in cereal grains is discussed.

Within the spectrum of a natural image, the amplitude of modulation decreases with spatial frequency. The speed of such an amplitude decrease, or the amplitude spectrum slope, of an image affects the perceived aesthetic value. Additionally, a human observer would consider a symmetric image more appealing than they do an asymmetric one. We investigated how these two factors jointly affect aesthetic preferences by manipulating both the amplitude spectrum slope and the symmetric level of images to assess their effects on aesthetic preference on a 6-point Likert scale. Our results showed that the preference ratings increased with the symmetry level but had an inverted U-shape relation to amplitude spectrum slope. In addition, a strong interaction existed between symmetry level and amplitude spectrum slope on preference rating, in that symmetry can amplify the amplitude spectrum slope’s effects. Such effects can be described by a quadratic function of the spectrum slope. That is, preference is an inverted U-shape function of spectrum slope whose intercept is determined by the number of symmetry axis. In addition, the interaction between the two factors is manifested as the modulation depth of the quadratic function.

Online social networking techniques and large-scale multimedia retrieval are developing rapidly, which not only has brought great convenience to our daily life, but generated, collected, and stored large-scale multimedia data as well. This trend has put forward higher requirements and greater challenges on massive multimedia retrieval. In this paper, we investigate the problem of image similarity measurement, which is one of the key problems of multimedia retrieval. Firstly, the definition of similarity measurement of images and the related notions are proposed. Then, an efficient similarity measurement framework is proposed. Besides, we present a novel basic method of similarity measurement named SMIN. To improve the performance of similarity measurement, we carefully design a novel indexing structure called SMI Temp Index (SMII for short). Moreover, we establish an index of potential similar visual words off-line to solve to problem that the index cannot be reused. Experimental evaluations on two real image datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-arts.
