Adversarial Classification (AC) is a major subfield within the increasingly important domain of adversarial machine learning (AML). Most approaches to AC so far have followed a classical game-theoretic framework. This requires unrealistic common knowledge conditions untenable in the security settings typical of the AML realm. After reviewing such approaches, we present alternative perspectives on AC based on Adversarial Risk Analysis.

State-of-the-art remote sensing scene classification methods employ different Convolutional Neural Network architectures for achieving very high classification performance. A trait shared by the majority of these methods is that the class associated with each example is ascertained by examining the activations of the last fully connected layer, and the networks are trained to minimize the cross-entropy between predictions extracted from this layer and ground-truth annotations. In this work, we extend this paradigm by introducing an additional output branch which maps the inputs to low dimensional representations, effectively extracting additional feature representations of the inputs. The proposed model imposes additional distance constrains on these representations with respect to identified class representatives, in addition to the traditional categorical cross-entropy between predictions and ground-truth. By extending the typical cross-entropy loss function with a distance learning function, our proposed approach achieves significant gains across a wide set of benchmark datasets in terms of classification, while providing additional evidence related to class membership and classification confidence.

Limnologists often adhere to a discretized view of waterbodies—they classify them, divide them into zones, promote discrete management targets, and use research tools, experimental designs, and statistical analyses focused on discretization. This approach to limnology has profoundly benefited the way we understand, manage, and communicate about waterbodies. But the research questions and the research tools in limnology are changing rapidly with consequences for the relevance of our current discretization schemes. Here, I examine how and why we discretize and argue that selectively rethinking the extent to which we must discretize gives us an exceptional chance to advance limnology in new ways.

A method for classification is introduced in this article, and it is tested on ADNI database to diagnose alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is obvious that tunning the performance of a classification to get better results is a complicated problem, and when we want model’s accuracy or other peformance measurments higher than 90%, the problem will be more complicated. In this study, we tried and succeeded to discover a method to solve this problem. The final feature set can be used clustering too, because outgrowth feature set of the proposed method is invigorated. In the recent years, a lot of activities is done to develop computer aided systems (CAD) for alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. Most of these recently developed systems concenterated on extracting and combining features from MRI, PET, CSF, and …; in this article, we made attempt to do so and utilized one more technique to increase classification performance. Finding and producing the best features to solve three binary classification problems of AD vs. Normal Control (NC), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) vs. NC, and MCI vs. AD are the purposes of this article. Experiments indicate performance and effectiveness rates of the proposed method, which are accuracies of 98.81%, 81.61%, and 81.40% for AD vs. NC, MCI vs. NC, and AD vs. MCI classification problems, respectively. As can be seen, using this method increased the performance of the three binary problems incredibly.

The fatty-acid profiles of five main commercial pistachio cultivars, including Ahmad-Aghaei, Akbari, Chrok, Kalle-Ghouchi and Ohadi, were determined by gas chromatography: palmitic (C16:0), palmitoleic (C16:1), stearic (C18:0), oleic (C18:1), linoleic (C18:2), linolenic (C18:3) arachidic (C20:0) and gondoic (C20:1) acid. Based on the oleic to linoleic acid (O/L) ratio, a quality index was determined for these five cultivars: Ohadi (2.40) < Ahmad-Aghaei (2.60) < Kale-Ghouchi (2.94) < Chrok (3.05) < Akbari (3.66). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the fatty-acid data yielded three significant PCs, which together account for 80.0% of the total variance in the data set. A linear discriminant analysis (LDA) model evaluated with cross validation correctly classified almost all samples: the average percent accuracy for the prediction set was 98.0%. The high predictive power for the prediction set shows the ability to indicate the cultivar of an unknown sample based on its fatty-acid chromatographic fingerprint.

The aim of this paper is to develop an intelligent event-driven Electrocardiogram (ECG) processing module in order to achieve an efficient solution for diagnosis of the cardiac diseases. The suggested method acquires the signal with an event-driven A/D converter (EDADC). The output of EDADC is passed through the activity selection and interpolation blocks. It allows focusing only on the important signal parts and resampling it uniformly. Later on, the signal is de-noised. The autoregressive (AR) method is used to extract the classifiable features of the de-noised signal. Afterwards, the output is classified by employing different robust classification techniques such as support vector machines (SVMs), K- Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The event-driven feature enables to adapt the system processing load according to the signal temporal variations. This interesting feature of the devised system aptitudes a drastic reduction in its processing activity and therefore in the power consumption as compared to the traditional ones. A comparison of the performance of different classifiers is also made in terms of accuracy. Results show that the proposed system is a potential candidate for an automatic diagnosis of the cardiac diseases.

Accurate, detailed and recent Information about land cover/use is important and much more needed for different aspects of sustainable development and environmental management. As remote sensing datasets are becomes one of the most important and effective tools to generate such information, this study aimed to generating land cover map for sub area in Al-Ahasaa Oasis, Saudi Arabia, by using and classifying a subset of Landsat-ETM+ image of the selected study area, as bases and required input for future studies and researches. Different image preprocessing techniques in addition to a will-known and widely used classification method (i.e., Maximum Likelihood classifier) were applied. To be reliable with the final product, accuracy assessment was carried out with 89% agreement and accepted according to the applied method. Different land cover classes were found in the study area, which includes (Sand dunes, Water bodies, Sabakha, Bare soil, Urban, and Agricultural lands). The study also revealed that the dominant land cover class is sand dunes with approximately ± 70% in area. The study strongly indicated that the area has long been affected by sand movement. Finally, the study suggested that, further researches with more advanced methods rather than traditional methods are needed in the future to support the findings of this study, with high degree of accuracy.

The early-season area estimation of the winter wheat crop as a strategic product is important for decision makers. Classification of multi-temporal images is an approach which is affected by many factors like appropriate training sample size, proper frequency and acquisition times, vegetation indices (VIs) type, temporal gradient of spectral bands and VIs, appropriate classifier and missed values because of cloudy conditions. This paper addresses the impact of appropriate frequency and acquisition times and VIs type along with the spectral and VI gradient on random forest (RF) classifier when missed values exist in multi-temporal images. To investigate the appropriate temporal resolution for image acquisition, the study area was selected on an overlapping area between two LDCM paths. In our developed method, the miss values of cloudy bands for each pixel are retrieved by the mean of k-nearest ordinary pixels. Then the multi-temporal image analysis is performed by considering different scenarios provided by decision makers in terms of desired crop types that should be extracted at early-season in the study areas. The classification results obtained by the RF decrease by 1.6% when temporally missed values retrieved by the proposed method, which is an acceptable result. Moreover, the experimental results demonstrated that if temporal resolution of Landsat 8 increased to one week the classification task can be conducted earlier with almost better results in terms of OA and kappa. The impact of incorporating VIs along with the temporal gradients of spectral bands and VIs as new features in RF demonstrated that the OA and Kappa are improved 3.1% and 6.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the obtained result showed that if only one image from seasonal changes of crops is available, the temporal gradient of VIs and spectral bands play the main role to discriminate remarkably wheat from barley. The experiments also demonstrated that if both wheat and barley merge to a single class the crop area can be estimated two months earlier with 97.1 and 93.5 in terms of OA and kappa, respectively.

Regulators require financial institutions to estimate counterparty default risks from liquid CDS quotes for the valuation and risk management of OTC derivatives. However, the vast majority of counterparties do not have liquid CDS quotes and need proxy CDS rates. Existing methods cannot account for counterparty-specific default risks; we propose to construct proxy CDS rates by associating to illiquid counterparty liquid CDS Proxy based on Machine Learning Techniques. After testing 156 classifiers from 8 most popular classifier families, we found that some classifiers achieve highly satisfactory accuracy rates. Furthermore, we have rank-ordered the performances and investigated performance variations amongst and within the 8 classifier families. This paper is, to the best of our knowledge, the first systematic study of CDS Proxy construction by Machine Learning techniques, and the first systematic classifier comparison study based entirely on financial market data. Its findings both confirm and contrast existing classifier performance literature. Given the typically highly correlated nature of financial data, we investigated the impact of correlation on classifier performance. The techniques used in this paper should be of interest for financial institutions seeking a CDS Proxy method, and can serve for proxy construction for other financial variables. Some directions for future research are indicated.

Machine learning and computer vision have proven to be valuable tools for farmers to streamline their resource utilization to lead to more sustainable and efficient agricultural production. These techniques have been applied to strawberry cultivation in the past with limited success. To build on this past work, in this study two separate sets of strawberry images, along with their associated diseases, were collected and subjected to, resizing, and augmentation. Subsequently, a combined dataset consisting of 9 classes was utilized to fine-tune three distinct pre-trained models: Vision Transformer (ViT), MobileNetV2, and ResNet18. To address the imbalanced class distribution in the dataset, each class was assigned weights to ensure nearly equal impact during the training process. To enhance the outcomes, new images were generated by removing backgrounds, reducing noise, and flipping them. The performances of ViT, MobileNetV2, and ResNet18 were compared after being selected. Customization specific to the task was applied to all three algorithms, and their performances were assessed. Throughout this experiment, none of the layers were frozen, ensuring all layers remained active during training. Attention heads were incorporated into the first 5 and last 5 layers of MobileNetV2 and ResNet18, while the architecture of ViT was modified. The results indicated accuracy factors of 98.4%, 98.1%, and 97.9% for ViT, MobileNetV2, and ResNet18, respectively. Despite the data being imbalanced, the precision, which indicates the proportion of correctly identified positive instances among all predicted positive instances, approached nearly 99% with the ViT. MobileNetV2 and ResNet18 demonstrated similar results. Overall, the analysis revealed that the Vision Transformer model exhibited superior performance in strawberry ripeness and disease classification. The inclusion of attention heads in the early layers of ResNet18 and MobileNet18, along with the inherent attention mechanism in ViT, improved the accuracy of image identification. These findings offer the potential for farmers to enhance strawberry cultivation through passive camera monitoring alone, promoting the health and well-being of the population.

Text classification is one of the most important task in natural language processing, In this research, we carried out several experimental research on three (3) of the most popular Text classification NLP classifier in Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB), and Support Vector Machine (SVN). In the presence of enough training data, Deep Learning CNN works best in all parameters for evaluation with 77% accuracy, followed by SVM with accuracy of 76%, and multinomial Bayes with least performance of 69% accuracy. CNN has the best performance in the presence of large enough training dataset because of the presence of filter/ kernels which help to indentify patterns in text data regardless of their position in the sentence. We repeated the training again with just one-third of our data, at this point SVM comes with the best performance, the performance of CNN noticeably drops but still better than Multinomial Naive Bayes, the reason why SVM works best when we reduce the training data was because of its ability to look for a hyper-plane that creates a boundary between different classes of data so as to properly classify them, so we believed that getting the hyper-plane was more efficient when we reduce the dataset, hence reason for the good performance. Multinomial Naive Bayes have the least performance which we attributed to its assumption of independency between the features which sometimes does not hold true. We concluded that availability of data should be an important factor when choosing classifier for Natural Language Processing Text Classification task. CNN should be use in the presence of enough dataset, and SVM should be use when data is not enough. Multinomial Naive Bayes must not be trusted with state of the art NLP task due to its assumption of independency between the features.

In this study we investigated the association between weather types (WTs) and the Urban Heat Island Intensity (UHII) in the region of Attica (Greece). The application of the methodology results in ten WTs over Attica region. The UHII was calculated for every hour of the day from 2008 to 2017, using a new air temperature dataset produced by Copernicus Climate Change Service. To have more clear results concerning the association between WTs and UHII, we have used also the upper 5% of UHII (Urban Overheating-UO). The UO have been estimated for two-time intervals (daytime and nighttime) and for the warm period (June-September). The UHII frequency distribution as well as the spatial characteristics of the UO were also investigated. It was found that UO was amplified under WT2 during the night while, WT10 was mainly responsible for exacerbated UO magnitude at daytime, in all months. Furthermore, analysis results revealed that the UO effect is more pronounced in Athens during the night, especially at Athens center. The daytime hot-spots identified mainly in sub-urban and rural areas. Therefore, this methodology may help for heat mitigation strategies and climate adaptation measures, in urban environments.

Data sets for medical images are generally imbalanced and limited in sample size because of high data collection costs, time-consuming annotations, and patient privacy concerns. The training of deep neural network classification models on these data sets to improve the generalization ability does not produce the desired results for classifying the medical condition accurately and often overfit the data on the majority of class samples. To address the issue, we propose a framework for improving the classification performance metrics of deep neural network classification models using transfer learning: pre-trained models, such as Xception, InceptionResNet, DenseNet along with the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) – based data augmentation. Then, we trained the network by combining traditional data augmentation techniques, such as randomly flipping the image left to right and GAN-based data augmentation, and then fine-tuned the hyper-parameters of the transfer learning models, such as the learning rate, batch size, and the number of epochs. With these configurations, the Xception model outperformed all other pre-trained models achieving a test accuracy of 98.7%, the precision of 99%, recall of 99.3%, f1-score of 99.1%, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) - area under the curve (AUC) of 98.2%.

In data-scarce regions, prudent planning and precise decision-making for sustainable development especially in agriculture remains a challenging task due to the lack of correct information. Remotely sensed satellite images provide a powerful source for assessing land use land cover (LULC) classes and crop identification. Applying Remote Sensing (RS) in conjunction with the Geographical Information System (GIS) and modern tools/ algorithms of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning has been proven effective for strategic planning and integrated resources management. The (this)study was conducted in the canal command area of the Lower Chenab Canal system in Punjab, Pakistan. Crop features/ classes were assessed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm. The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) 250 m and Landsat 5 TM (thematic mapper) images were deployed for NDVI time-series analysis with unsupervised classification technique to get LULC classes that helped to discern cropping pattern, crop rotation, and the area of specific crops, which were then used as a key input for agricultural mechanization planning and resources management. The accuracy of the LULC map was 78%, assessed by the error matrix approach. Limitations of high-resolution RS data availability and the accuracy of the results are the concerns observed in this study that could be managed by the availability of good quality local sources and advanced techniques of processing, which will make it more useful and applicable for regional agriculture and environmental management.

This paper proposes a novel approach, based on the adaptive rate processing and analysis, for the isolated speech recognition. The idea is to smartly combine the event-driven signal acquisition and windowing along with adaptive rate processing, analysis and classification for realizing an effective isolated speech recognition. The incoming speech signal is digitized with an event-driven A/D converter (EDADC). The output of EDADC is windowed with an activity selection process. These windows are later on resampled uniformly with an adaptive rate interpolator. The resampled windows are de-noised with an adaptive rate filter and their spectrum are computed with an adaptive resolution short time Fourier transform (ARSTFT). Later on, the magnitude, Delta and Delta-Delta spectral coefficients are extracted. The Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) technique is employed to compare these extracted features with the reference templates. The comparison outcomes are used to make the classification decision. The system functionality is tested for a case study and results are presented. An 8.2 times reduction in acquired number of samples is achieved by the devised approach as compared to the classical one. It aptitudes a significant computational gain and power consumption reduction of the proposed system over the counter classical ones. An average subject dependent isolated speech recognition accuracy of 96.8% is achieved. It shows that the proposed approach is a potential candidate for the automatic speech recognition applications like rehabilitation centers, smart call centers, smart homes, etc.

Effective solar forecasting has become a critical topic in the scholarly literature in recent years due to the rapid growth of photovoltaic energy production worldwide and the inherent variability of this source of energy. Due to the technological and econonomic limitations of energy storage solutions, using other, mosty conventional, sources to cover energy shortfalls and at the same time utilising solar surpluses production becomes necessary. The need to optimize energy systems, ensuring power continuity, and balancing energy supply and demand has led to the development of various forecasting methods and approaches based on meteorological data or photovoltaic plant characteristics. This article presents the results of a meta-review of the solar forecasting literature, including the current state of knowledge and methodological discussion. It presents a comprehensive set of forecasting methods, evaluates current classifications, and proposes a new synthetic typology. The article emphasizes the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques in improving forecast accuracy, alongside traditional statistical and physical models. It explores the challenges of hybrid and ensemble models, which combine multiple forecasting approaches to enhance performance. The paper addresses the emerging trends in solar forecasting research, such as the integration of big data and advanced computational tools. Additionally, from a methodological perspective, the article outlines a rigorous approach to the meta-review research procedure, addresses the scientific challenges associated with conducting bibliometric research, and highlights best practices and principles. This includes defining research questions, selecting eligibility criteria, literature search, data extraction, synthesis, and assessing bias and quality. The article contributes to the solar forecasting field by providing up-to-date knowledge, along with insights on the emerging trends, future research directions, and anticipating implications for the theory and practicce.

One of the most important challenges in the Machine and Deep Learning areas today is to build good models using small datasets, because sometimes it is not possible to have large ones. Several techniques have been proposed in the literature to address this challenge. This paper aims at studying the different available Deep Learning techniques and performing a thorough experimentation to analyze which technique or combination thereof improves the performance and effectiveness of the models. A complete comparison with classical Machine Learning techniques was carried out, to contrast the results obtained using both techniques when working with small datasets. Thirteen algorithms were implemented and trained using three different small datasets (MNIST, Fashion MNIST, and CIFAR-10). Each experiment was evaluated using a well-established set of metrics (Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1, and the Matthews correlation coefficient). The experimentation allowed concluding that it is possible to find a technique or combination of them to mitigate a lack of data, but this depends on the nature of the dataset, the amount of data, and the metrics used to evaluate them.

To enhance the overall reliability of the power system, engineers have redirected their focus toward health monitoring and early detection of faults in transformers. Among these faults, transformer core defects demand particular attention. While fault simulation using software has traditionally been the preferred approach, these methods suffer from data inaccuracies in real-world conditions. Consequently, conducting actual experimental setups with induced faults is imperative to investigate core issues. This study uses Hilbert Transform (HT) as a signal processing technique to extract crucial data characteristics, thereby enhancing the performance of the classifier model. The research involves analyzing electric current signals from a single-phase 1kVA transformer. A comparative assessment of our proposed model was conducted using raw data and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), evaluating accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and computational time. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in all metrics for the classifier models, particularly the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm, which exhibited values of 83.89%, 84.39%, 83.89%, 83.79%, and 0.0156 seconds, respectively. Future work aims to extend this analysis under different loading conditions.

Interest in drone solutions in forestry applications is growing. Using drones, datasets can be captured flexibly and at high spatial and temporal resolutions when needed. In forestry applications, fundamental tasks include the detection of individual trees, tree species classification, bio-mass estimation, etc. Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have shown superior results when comparing with conventional machine learning methods such as Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) in cases of huge input data. The objective of this research was to investigate 3D convolutional neural networks (3D-CNN) to classify three major tree species in a boreal forest: pine, spruce, and birch. The proposed 3D-CNN models were employed to classify tree species in a test site in Finland. The classifiers were trained with a dataset of 3039 manually labelled trees. Then the accuracies were assessed by employing independent datasets of 803 records. To find the most efficient set of feature combination, we compare the performances of 3D-CNN models trained with hyperspectral (HS) channels, RGB channels, and canopy height model (CHM), separately and combined. It is demonstrated that the proposed 3D-CNN model with RGB and HS layers produces the highest classification accuracy. The producer accuracy of the best 3D-CNN classifier on the test dataset were 99.6%, 94.8%, and 97.4% for pines, spruces, and birches, respectively. The best 3D-CNN classifier produced ~5% better classification accuracy than the MLP with all layers. Our results suggest that the proposed method provides excellent classification results with acceptable performance metrics for HS datasets. Our results show that pine class was detectable in most layers. Spruce was most detectable in RGB data, while birch was most detectable in the HS layers. Furthermore, the RGB datasets provide acceptable results for many low-accuracy applications.

Satellite-based data classification performance remains a challenge for research community in the field of land use/land cover mapping. Here we investigated supervised per-pixel classifications performance under different scenarios, based on single and seasonal multispectral data combi-nations of different sensors (Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2 MSI). In case of Landsat, seasonal spectral indices (EVI and NDMI) were included. A typical Mediterranean watershed with a complex landscape comprised of various forest and wetland ecosystems, crops, artificial surfaces, and lake water was selected to test our approach. All available geospatial data from national databases (Forest Map, LPIS, Natura2000 habitats, cadastral parcels, etc.) are used as ancillary data for clas-sification training and validation. We examined and compared the performance of ML, RF, KNN and SVM classifiers under different scenarios for land use/land cover mapping, according to Copernicus Land Cover (CLC2018) nomenclature. In total, eight land use/land cover classes were identified in Landsat-8 OLI and nine in Sentinel-2a MSI for an acceptable overall accuracy over 85%. A comparison of the overall classification accuracies shows that Sentinel-2a overall accuracy was slightly higher than Landsat-8 (96.68% vs. 93.02%). Respectively, the best-performed algorithm was ML in Sentinel-2 while in Landsat-8 was KNN. However, machine-learning algorithms have similar results regardless the type of sensor. We concluded that best classification performances achieved using seasonal multispectral data. Future research should be oriented towards inte-grating time-series multispectral data of different sensors and geospatial ancillary data for land use/land cover mapping.

The Supersymmetry Genetic code (SSyGC) table is based on five physicochemical symmetries: 1) double mirror symmetry on the principle of the horizontal and vertical mirror symmetry axis between all bases (purines [A, G) and pyrimidines (U, C)], and 2) of bases in form of codons 3) direct – complement like codon/anticodon symmetry in the sixteen alternating boxes of the genetic code columns, 4) A+T rich and C+G rich alternate codons in the same row between both columns of the genetic code, 5) the same position between divided and undivided codon boxes in relation to horizontal mirror symmetry axes. The SSyGC table has a unique physicochemical purine – pyrimidine symmetry net which is as the core symmetry common for all, more than thirty different nuclear and mitochondrial genetic codes. This net is present in the SSyGC table of all RNA and DNA living species. None of these symmetries is present in the Standard Genetic Code (SGC) table which is constructed on the alphabetic horizontal and vertical U-C-A-G order of bases. Here we show that the free energy value of each codon incorporated as fundamentally mapping the “energy code” in the SSyGC table is compatible with mirror symmetry. On the other hand, in the SGC table the same free energy values of codons are dispersed and a mirror symmetry between them is not recognizable. At the same time the mirror symmetry of the SSyGC table and the DNA quadruplets together with our classification of codons/trinucleotides are perfectly imbedded in the mirror symmetry energy mapping of codons/trinucleotides and point out in favor of maintaining the integrity of the genetic code and DNA genome. We also argue that physicochemical symmetries of the SSyGC table in the manner of the purine – pyrimidine symmetry net, the quadruplet symmetry of DNA molecule and the free energy of codons have remined unchanged during all of evolution. The unchangeable and universal symmetry properties of the genetic code, DNA molecule and energy code are decreasing disorder between codons/trinucleotides and shed a new light on evolution. Diversity in all living species on Earth is broad, but the symmetries of the Supersymmetry Genetic Code as the code of life and the DNA quadruplets related to the” energy code” are unique, unchangeable and have the power of natural laws.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is going to launch Advanced Land Observing Satellite 3 (ALOS-3) after 2022. ALOS-3 satellite is capable of observing global land areas with wide swath (4000 km along-track direction and 70 km cross-track direction) at high spatial resolution (panchromatic: 0.8m, multispectral: 3.2m). Maintenance and updating of land cover and vegetation information at national level is one of the major goals of the ALOS-3 mission. This paper presents the potential of simulated ALOS-3 images for the classification and mapping of land cover and vegetation types at Genus-Physiognomy-Ecosystem (GPE) level. We acquired and simulated WorldView-3 images according to the configuration of the ALOS-3 satellite sensor and the simulated ALOS-3 images were utilized for the classification and mapping of land cover and vegetation types in three sites (Hakkoda, Zao, and Shiranuka) in northern Japan. This research dealt with 17 land cover and vegetation types in Hakkoda site, 25 land cover and vegetation types in Zao site, and 12 land cover and vegetation types in Shiranuka site. Ground truth data were newly collected in three sites, and we employed eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifier with the implementation of 10-fold cross-validation method for assessing the potential of ALOS-3S images. The classification accuracies obtained in Hakkoda, Zao, and Shiranuka sites in terms of f1-score were 0.810, 0.729, and 0.805 respectively. The fine scale (3.2m) land cover and vegetation maps produced in the study sites showed clear and detailed view of the distribution of plant communities. Regardless of the limited number of the temporal images, ALOS-3S images showed high potential (at least 0.729 F1-score) for the land cover and vegetation classification in all three sites. The availability of more cloud free temporal scenes is expected for improved classification and mapping in the future.

Understanding clinical significance of variants of unknown significance (VUS) reported in next-generation sequencing (NGS) has become essential in cancer treatment. Our study examined six widely used in silico tools: PolyPhen-2, Align-GVGD, MutationTaster2, CADD, REVEL, and Chat-GPT. We utilized a dataset of gene variants known to potentially affect immune therapy. No single tool could comprehensively determine mutation variant pathogenicity. MutationTaster2021 showed the highest overall accuracy and MCC among the tools. Notably, REVEL and Chat-GPT exhibited 100% specificity, suggesting their proficiency in accurately identifying pathogenic variants and minimizing false positives. In contrast, CADD displayed optimal sensitivity, making it suitable for effectively ruling out benign variants.

Photoelectric smoke detectors are the most cost-effective devices for very early fire alarms. However, due to different light intensity response values for different fire smoke and interference from interferential aerosols, they have a high false alarm rate, which limits their popularity in Chinese homes. To address these issues, an embedded spatial-temporal convolutional neural network (EST-CNN) model is proposed for real fire smokes identification and aerosols (fire smokes and interferential aerosol) classification. EST-CNN consists of three modules including information fusion, scattering feature extraction, and aerosol classification. Moreover, a two dimensional spatial-temporal scattering (2D-TS) matrix is designed to fuse the scattered light intensities in different channels and adjacent time slices, which is the output of the information fusion module and the input of the scattering feature extraction module. EST-CNN is trained and tested with experimental data measured on the established fire test platform using the developed dual-wavelength dual-angle photoelectric smoke detector. The optimal network parameters are selected through extensive experiments resulting in an average classification accuracy of 95.6% for different aerosols with only 66 kB network parameters. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the designed EST-CNN model to be directly installed in existing commercial photoelectric smoke detectors to realize aerosol classification.

In the field of computer vision, large-scale image classification tasks are both important and highly challenging. With the ongoing advances in deep learning and optical character recognition (OCR) technologies, neural networks designed to perform large-scale classification play an essential role in facilitating OCR systems. In this study, we developed an automatic OCR system designed to identify up to 13,070 large-scale printed Chinese characters by using deep learning neural networks and fine-tuning techniques. The proposed framework comprises four components, including training dataset synthesis and background simulation, image preprocessing and data augmentation, the process of training the model, and transfer learning. The training data synthesis procedure is composed of a character font generation step and a background simulation process. Three background models are proposed to simulate the factors of the background noise and anti-counterfeiting patterns on ID cards. To expand the diversity of the synthesized training dataset, rotation and zooming data augmentation are applied. A massive dataset comprising more than 19.6 million images was thus created to accommodate the variations in the input images and improve the learning capacity of the CNN model. Subsequently, we modified the GoogLeNet neural architecture by replacing the FC layer with a global average pooling layer to avoid overfitting caused by a massive amount of training data. Consequently, the number of model parameters was reduced. Finally, we employed the transfer learning technique to further refine the CNN model using a small number of real data samples. Experimental results show that the overall recognition performance of the proposed approach is significantly better than that of prior methods and thus demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed framework, which exhibited a recognition accuracy as high as 99.39% on the constructed real ID card dataset.

Functional Connectivity analysis using Electroencephalography signals is common. The EEG signals are converted to networks by transforming the signals into a correlation matrix and analyzing the resulting networks. Here, four learning models, namely, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Recurrent Neural Networks, are implemented on the correlation matrix data to classify them either on their psychometric assessment or the effect of therapy; The EEG data is trail-based/event-related. The classifications based on RNN provided higher accuracy( 74-88%) than the other three models( 50-78%). Instead of using individual graph features, a correlation matrix provides an initial test of the data. When compared with the time-resolved correlation matrix, it offered a 4-5% higher accuracy. The time-resolved correlation matrix is better suited for dynamic studies here; it provides lower accuracy when compared to the correlation matrix, a static feature.

The objective of the study was to analyze the climate change experienced in Spain between 1971 and 2022 and to estimate the future climate (2050). The main objectives were: 1) to analyze the temporal evolution of temperature from 1971 to the present, to quantify the warming process experienced in the case study and to evaluate the increase in ex-treme heat events (heatwaves); 2) to study the evolution of the precipitation regime to determine whether there is a statistically representative trend towards a drier climate and an increase in extreme precipitation; 3) to investigate the interaction between annual precipitation and the continuous increase in temperature; and 4) to estimate the future climate scenario for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands towards 2050, analyzing the trends in land aridity and predicting a possible change from a Mediterranean climate to a warm steppe climate, according to the Köppen classi-fication. In this study, we used the E-OBS dataset provided by the European Climate Assessment and Dataset (ECA&D) project. E-OBS is a high-resolution gridded daily climate dataset. Its advantage over other databases is that it is based on direct climate information from the weather stations included in the Copernicus ECA&D. Furthermore, a detailed interpolation and refinement process allows a complete, uniform view of the studied territory. This dataset has pro-vided daily weather information since 1950 and is presented as a complete dataset of the European region. It is availa-ble on a regular grid of 0.1 and 0.25 degrees for the elements of daily average temperature (TG), daily minimum tem-perature (TN), daily maximum temperature (TX) and the sum of daily precipitation (RR), among other climatic varia-bles. In this study, we obtained daily temperature data, including the average, maximum and minimum temperature, and precipitation from 1971 to 2022, using the 27.0e dataset. We used information from E-OBS from 1 January 1971 to 31 December 2022, with a resolution of 0.25 degrees. The main purpose of this study was to analyze whether there is a temporal evolution of the precipitation regime in Spain towards less precipitation, and to study the relationship between annual precipitation and the tendency to-wards progressive warming. Specifically, the aim was to test the hypothesis that the increase in temperature resulting from the global warming process implies a tendency towards progressive drought. The hypothesis is + T  - RR. Given the extreme annual variability of the climate, in addition to the ordinary least squares methodology, the techniques mainly used in this study were the Mann-Kendall test and the Kendall-Theil-Sen regression. The Mann-Kendall test confirmed the statistical significance of the relationship between RR and TX, with a statistical relia-bility close to 99.9%. The KTS regression predicted a reduction of 38.25 mm for each 1°C increase. If the warming trend experienced in recent years (1973– 2022) continues, it is foreseeable that by 2050 there will be a reduction in precipitation in Spain of between 14% and 23% with respect to the precipitation of the reference period (understood as the average between 1971 and 2000). Spain’s climate is likely to vary from Mediterranean to warm steppe in the Köppen classification system (from “C” to “B”).

With the rapid development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), vehicle type classification, as a key link in Automatic Toll Collection systems (ATC), is of great significance in improving traffic efficiency and reducing economic losses. This study proposes an intelligent vehicle classification system based on deep learning and multi-sensor data fusion to address the accuracy issues existing in vehicle classification methods based on optical sensors (OS) and human observers. The system significantly improves the accuracy and robustness of vehicle classification by combining deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), LiDAR sensors, and machine learning algorithms. We first constructed a large-scale annotated dataset containing multiple vehicle types and complex traffic scenes to improve our model's capability to identify different vehicle characteristics. Next, CNN models based on different architectures were designed to extract global and local features of the vehicle, respectively. In addition, the LiDAR sensor was used to achieve the spatial structure architectures of the vehicle and combined with the output of the CNN model to improve classification performance under occlusion and complex scenes.

Humans learn from a lot of information sources to make decisions. Once this information is learned in the brain, spatio-temporal associations are made, connecting all these sources (variables) in space and time represented as brain connectivity. In reality, to make a decision, we usually have only part of the infor-mation, either as a limited number of variables, or limited time to make the decision, or both. The brain functions as spatio-temporal associative memory. Inspired by the ability of the human brain, a brain-inspired spatio-temporal associative memory was proposed earlier, that utilizes the NeuCube brain-inspired spiking neural network framework. Here we apply the STAM framework to develop STAM for neuroimaging data, on the cases of EEG and fMRI, resulting in STAM-EEG and STAM-fMRI. The paper shows that once a NeuCube STAM classification model is trained on a complete spatio-temporal EEG or fMRI data, it can be recalled using only part of the time series, or/and only part of the used variables. We evaluate accordingly the temporal association accuracy and spatial association accuracy. This is a pilot study that opens the field for the development of multimodal classification systems on other multimodal neuroimaging data, such as the also shown longitudinal MRI data, trained on complete data, but recalled on partial data collected across different settings, in different labs and clinics, that may vary in terms of variables, time of data collection, and other parameters. The proposed methods will allow also for brain diagnostic/prognostic marker discovery using spatio-temporal neuroimaging data.

Hyperspectral image and LiDAR image fusion plays a crucial role in remote sensing by capturing spatial relationships and modeling semantic information for accurate classification and recognition. However, existing methods, like Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), face challenges in constructing effective graph structures due to variations in local semantic information and limited receptiveness to large-scale contextual structures. To overcome these limitations, we proposed a invariant attribute-driven binary bi-branch classification (IABC) method which is a unified network that combines binary Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and GCN with invariant attributes. Our approach utilizes a joint detection framework that can simultaneously learn features from small-scale regular regions and large-scale irregular regions, resulting in an enhanced structured representation of HSI and LiDAR images in the spectral-spatial domain. This approach not only improves the accuracy of classification and recognition but also reduces storage requirements and enables real-time decision-making, which is crucial for effectively processing large-scale remote sensing data. Extensive experiments demonstrates the superior performance of our proposed method in hyperspectral image analysis tasks. The combination of CNNs and GCNs allows for accurate modeling of spatial relationships and effective construction of graph structures. Furthermore, the integration of binary quantization enhances computational efficiency, enabling real-time processing of large-scale data. Therefore, our approach presents a promising opportunity for advancing remote sensing applications using deep learning techniques.

A timely inventory of agricultural areas and crop types is an essential requirement for ensuring global food security. Satellite remote sensing has proven to be an increasingly more reliable tool to identify crop types. With the Copernicus program and its Sentinel satellites, a growing source of satellite remote sensing data is publicly available at no charge. Here we use joint Sentinel-1 radar and Sentinel-2 optical imagery to create a crop map for Belgium. To ensure homogenous radar and optical input across the country, Sentinel-1 12-day backscatter composites were created after incidence angle normalization, and Sentinel-2 NDVI images were smoothed to yield dekadal cloud-free composites. An optimized random forest classifier predicted the 8 crop types with a maximum accuracy of 82% and a kappa coefficient of 0.77. We found that a combination of radar and optical imagery always outperformed a classification based on single-sensor inputs, and that classification performance increased throughout the season until July, when differences between crop types are largest. Furthermore we showed that the concept of classification confidence derived from the random forest classifier provided insight in the reliability of the predicted class for each pixel, clearly showing that parcel borders have a lower classification confidence. We concluded that the synergistic use of radar and optical data for crop classification led to richer information increasing classification accuracies compared to optical-only classification. Further work should focus on object-level classification and crop monitoring to exploit the rich potential of combined radar and optical observations.

The growth rate in academic and scientific publications increased very fast. Researchers must choose a good representative and significant literature in publications, which has become challenging worldwide. Usually, the paper citation number indicates this paper's potential influence and importance. However, this standard metric of citation numbers cannot be used as a measurement to judge the popularity and significance of the recently published papers. To address this challenge, this paper presents an effective prediction method called FutureCite to predict the future citation level of research articles. FutureCite combines machine learning with text and graph mining techniques, leveraging their abilities in classification, datasets in-depth analysis, and feature extraction. FutureCite aims to predict future citation levels of research articles applying a multilabel classification approach. FutureCite can extract significant semantic features and capture the interconnection relationships found in scientific articles during feature extraction using textual content, citation networks, and metadata as feature resources. Our goal is to contribute to the advancement of substantial effective approaches impacting the citation counts in scientific publications by enhancing the precision of future citations. We conducted several experiments using a comprehensive publication dataset to evaluate our method and determine the impact of using a variety of machine learning algorithms. FutureCite demonstrated its robustness and efficiency and showed promising results based on different evaluation metrics. Using the FutureCite model has significant implications in improving the researchers' ability to determine targeted literature for their research and better understand the potential impact of research publications.

In this study, we introduce an innovative framework for multimodal learning that leverages enhanced fusion gate units within gated neural network architectures. The proposed Fusion Gate Unit (FGU) serves as a pivotal component in neural network designs, aiming to derive a comprehensive intermediate representation by amalgamating data from diverse modalities. The FGU is adept at determining the extent to which each modality influences the unit's activation through the utilization of multiplicative gating mechanisms. We conducted evaluations on a multilabel genre classification task for movies, utilizing both plot summaries and poster images as input modalities. The results demonstrate that the FGU significantly elevates the macro F-score compared to single-modality approaches and surpasses existing fusion techniques, including mixture of experts models. Additionally, we present the MM-IMDb dataset alongside this publication, which, to our knowledge, represents the most extensive publicly accessible multimodal dataset for movie genre prediction to date. This dataset is expected to facilitate further research and development in the field of multimodal information processing.

Target recognition and fine-grained ship classification in remote sensing face the challenges of high inter-class similarity and sample scarcity. A transfer fusion-based ship image harmonization algorithm is proposed to overcome these challenges. This algorithm designs a feature transfer fusion strategy based on the combination of region aware instantiation and attention mechanism. Implement adversarial learning through image harmony generator and discriminator module to generate realistic remote sensing ship harmony images. Furthermore, the do-main encoder and domain discriminator modules are responsible for extracting feature representations of foreground and background, and further aligning ship foreground with remote sensing ocean background features through feature discrimination. Compared with other advanced image conversion techniques, our algorithm delivers more realistic visuals, improving classification accuracy for six ship types by 3% and twelve types by 2.94%, outperforming Sim2RealNet. Finally, a mixed dataset containing data augmentation and harmonizing samples and real data was proposed for the fine-grained classification task of remote sensing ships. Evaluation experiments were conducted on 8 typical fine-grained classification algorithms, and the accuracy of fine-grained classification for all categories of ships was analyzed. The experimental results show that the mixed dataset proposed in this paper effectively alleviates the long tail problem in real datasets, and the proposed remote sensing ship data augmentation framework performs better than state-of-the-art data augmentation methods in fine-grained ship classification tasks.

Submerged aquatic vegetation, also referred to as submerged macrophytes, provides important habitats and serves as a significant ecological indicator for assessing the condition of water bodies and for gaining insights into the impacts of climate change. In this study, we introduce a novel approach for the extensive monitoring of submerged vegetation, validated against established monitoring techniques. Employing full waveform airborne laser scanning, frequently used for topographic mapping and forestry applications on dry land, we extend its application to the detection of underwater vegetation in Lake Constance. The primary focus of this research lies in the automatic classification of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) point clouds, distinguishing the three vegetation classes (i) Low Vegetation, (ii) High Vegetation, and (iii) Vegetation Canopy based on their height. The results reveal detailed three-dimensional representation of submerged vegetation, enabling the identification of vegetation structures and inference of vegetation types with reference to pre-existing knowledge. While the results within training areas demonstrate high precision and alignment with comparative data, the findings in test areas exhibit comprehensible deficiencies that are likely addressable through corrective measures in the future.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide, primarily affecting women, while histopathological image analysis is one of the possibilities used to determine tumor malignancy. Regarding image analysis, the application of deep learning has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. However, a significant issue is the unbalanced nature of available datasets, with some classes having more images than others, which may impact the performance of the models due to poorer generalisability. A possible strategy to avoid this problem is downsampling the class with the most images to create a balanced dataset. Nevertheless, this approach is not recommended for small datasets as it can lead to poor model performance. Instead, techniques such as data augmentation are traditionally used to address this issue. These techniques apply simple transformations, such as translation or rotation, to the images to increase variability in the dataset. Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have emerged, which can generate images from a relatively small training set. This work aims to enhance the model’s performance in classifying histopathological images by applying data augmentation using GANs instead of traditional techniques.

Evolution remains an incessant process in viruses, allowing them to elude host immune response and induce severe diseases, impacting the diagnostic and vaccine effectiveness. Predicting emerging viral genomes is crucial, particularly in diseases like dengue, where viruses disrupt host cells, leading to fatal outcomes. Deep learning has been applied to predict dengue fever cases; there has been relatively less emphasis on its significance in forecasting emerging Dengue Virus (DENV) serotype. While Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) were originally designed for modeling temporal sequences, our proposed DL-DVE generative and classification model, trained on complete genome data of DENV, transcends traditional approaches by learning semantic relationships between nucleotides in a continuous vector space instead of representing contextual meaning of nucleotide characters. Leveraging 2000 publicly available DENV complete genome sequences, our Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based generative and Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) based classification DL-DVE model showcases proficiency in learning intricate patterns and generating sequences for emerging serotype of DENV. The generative model showed accuracy of 93% and the classification model provided insight into the specific serotype label, corroborated by BLAST search verification. Evaluation metrics such as ROC-AUC value 0.818, accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score all to be around 99.00%, demonstrated the classification model’s reliability.  Our model classified the generated sequences as DENV-4, exhibiting 65.99% similarity to DENV-4 and around 63-65% similarity with other serotypes, indicating notable distinction from other serotypes. Moreover, the intra-serotype divergence of sequences with a minimum 90% similarity underscored their uniqueness. We analyzed the conserved motifs in the genome through MEME Suite (version 5.5.5). Our research strives to contribute to the ongoing fight against the Dengue virus by offering predictive insights into its genomic evolution. Looking ahead, proactive predictive modeling before mutations occur holds potential for guiding vaccine design and diagnostic kit development.

In recent years, researches on combining wavelet decomposition and convolutional neural network (CNN) together to classify hyperspectral images (HSI) have emerged, and some effective classification models have been proposed and achieved good classification results. However, there are two problems for most of the proposed models. One is the heavy training parameters and the other is that there is no distinction between the classification effectiveness of low frequency and high frequency features after wavelet decomposition. In this paper, a new light-weighted HSI classification model (LLFWCNN) is proposed, which performs multi-layer wavelet decomposition for HSI after dimensionality reduction, and only arranges the low frequency features in a specific stack mode, then classifies them through a well-designed convolutional neural network. Compared with other classification models, the number of parameters is only 2.5% of that of other models. And only the low frequency features after wavelet decomposition are used, while the high frequency features are abandoned. The results showed that compared with the state-of-the-art classification models, LLFWCNN could obtain the same or even better classification results with fewer network parameters and proved that the low frequency features after wavelet decomposition provide LLFWCNN with more favorable information for HSI classification as well.

Audio classification using deep learning models, essential for applications like voice assistants and music analysis, faces challenges when deployed on edge devices due to their limited computational resources and memory. Achieving a balance between performance, efficiency, and accuracy is a significant obstacle in optimizing these models for such constrained environments. In this investigation, we evaluate diverse deep learning architectures, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), for audio classification tasks on the ESC 50, UrbanSound8k, and Audio Set datasets. Our empirical findings indicate that Mel Spectrograms outperform raw audio data, attributing this enhancement to their synergistic alignment with advanced image classification algorithms and their congruence with human auditory perception. To address the constraints of model size, we apply model compression techniques, notably magnitude pruning, Taylor Pruning, and 8-bit quantization. The research demonstrates that a hybrid pruned model achieves a commendable accuracy rate of 89 percent, which, although marginally lower than the 92 percent accuracy of the uncompressed CNN, strikingly illustrates an equilibrium between efficiency and performance. Subsequently, we deploy the optimized model on Raspberry Pi 4 and NVIDIA Jetson Nano platforms for audio classification tasks. These findings highlight the significant potential of model compression strategies in enabling effective deep learning applications on resource-limited devices, with minimal compromise on accuracy.

We performed arthroscopically assisted coracoclavicular (CC) stabilization using a suture button device for modified Neer type IIb lateral clavicle fractures accompanied by CC ligament injury. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the radiological and clinical outcomes of this procedure. Six consecutive patients with modified Neer type IIb fractures were treated with the technique and followed for 12 months. Postoperative ranges of motion (ROMs) and X-rays were evaluated every 3 months. Shoulder functional scores (University of California Los Angeles score, Japanese Orthopedics Association score), visual analog scale (VAS) scores for pain at rest, at night, and during motion, and VAS score for satisfaction were analyzed at 12 months after surgery. For the clinical outcomes, early ROM recovery and excellent outcomes were achieved. For the radiological outcomes, all patients accomplished bone union, slight superior displacement was noted in the CC distance and Dog Bone distance, and bone hole dilation was observed in the superior coracoid and inferior clavicle, but there were no critical complications. The present findings indicate that arthroscopically assisted CC stabilization with a suture button device for unstable lateral clavicle fractures can produce satisfactory radiological and clinical results.

Artificial intelligence techniques are now widely used in various agricultural applications, including the detection of devastating diseases such as late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and early blight (Alternaria solani) affecting potato (Solanum Tuberorsum L.) crops. In this paper, we present a mobile application for potato crop pest detection based on deep neural networks. The images were taken from the PlantVillage dataset with a batch of 1000 images for each of the three identified classes. An exploratory analysis of the architectures used for early and late blight diagnosis in potatoes was performed, achieving an accuracy of 98.76%, with MobileNetv2. Based on the results obtained, an offline mobile application was implemented, supported on devices with Android 4.1 or later, also featuring an information section on the 27 pests affecting potato crops and a gallery of symptoms. For future work, segmentation techniques will be used to highlight the damaged region in the potato leaf by evaluating its extent and possibly identifying different types of pests affecting the same plant.

Academic researchers publish their work in various formats, such as papers, patents, and research reports, on different academic sites. When searching for a particular researcher's work, it can be challenging to pinpoint the right individual, especially when there are multiple researchers with the same name. In order to handle this issue, we propose a name disambiguation scheme of researchers with the same name based on heterogeneous academic sites. The proposed scheme collects and integrates research results from these varied academic sites, focusing on attributes crucial for disambiguation. It then employs clustering techniques to identify individuals who share the same name. Additionally, the proposed rule-based algorithm name disambiguation method and the existing deep learning-based identification method. This approach allows for the selection of the most accurate disambiguation scheme, taking into account the metadata available in the academic sites, using a multiclass classification approach. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct various performance evaluations, measuring accuracy, recall, and the F1-measure, highlighting the scheme's superior performance in the name disambiguation.

Facial emotion detection is a challenging task that deals with emotion recognition. It has applications in various domains, such as behavior analysis, surveillance systems and human-computer interaction (HCI). Numerous studies have been implemented to detect emotions, including classical machine learning algorithms and advanced deep learning algorithms. For the machine learning algorithm, the hand-crafted feature needs to be extracted, which is a tiring task and requires human effort. Whereas in deep learning models, automated feature extraction is employed from samples. Therefore, in this study, we have proposed a novel and efficient deep learning model based on Neural Architecture Search Network utilizing superior artificial networks such as RNN and child networks. We performed the training utilizing the FER 2013 dataset comprising seven classes: happy, angry, neutral, sad, surprise, fear, and disgust. Furthermore, we analyzed the robustness of the proposed model on CK+ datasets and comparing with existing techniques. Due to the implication of reinforcement learning in the network, most representative features are extracted from the sample network. It extracts all key features without losing the key information. Our proposed model is based on one stage classifier and performs efficient classification. Our technique outperformed the existing models attaining an accuracy of 98.14%, recall of 97.57%, and precision of 97.84%.

Recently a measure termed F* was described, as an interpretable transformation of the F measure, also known as the Dice coefficient. Using elementary mathematical methods, it is shown that F* is in fact identical to a previously described measure, monotonically related to the F measure, and variously termed in previous publications, dating from the late 19^th to the late 20^th century, as the ratio of verification, the Jaccard similarity measure or index, the threat score, the Tanimoto index, and the critical success index. The origins of these different terms in different disciplines (weather forecasting, ecology, machine learning) may explain the repeated independent redescription of this measure.

Olive Anthracnose (OA) is the most important fungal disease of olive fruits worldwide. In the context of integrated pest management, the development of predictive models could be used for early diagnosis and control. In the current study, a dataset representing 58 cases (6 locations with 12 olive cultivars) was used to study the relationship between ΟΑ incidence (OAI) and 35 heterogeneous variables, including orchard characteristics, olive fruit parameters, foliar and soil nutrients, soil parameters and soil texture classes. The Random Forest-Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross Validation (RF-RFECV) feature selection method identified Location, Water Content, P, Ca, Mg, Exchangeable Mg, Trace Zn, Trace Cu as possible new indicators associated with OAI. Six different classification algorithms, namely Decision Tree (DT), Gradient Boosting (GB), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), were developed for predicting conditions leading to OAI >0% and 10%. Hyperparameter optimization using grid search was used to optimize the parameters of the models and finally the best parameters were applied to predict the OAI. The final models were evaluated in terms of several standard metrics, such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and ROC AUC score. Findings suggested that GB performance was superior compared to the other models for the prediction of the occurrence of OA disease (OAI>0%) with an accuracy of 86.7%, a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 75% and a ROC-AUC score of 93%, while for the prediction of the spread of the disease (OAI>10%), DT stood out with an accuracy of 86.7%, a sensitivity of 81.8%, a specificity of 100% and a ROC-AUC score of 91%. RF classifier performed very well in both cases, with an accuracy of 80%, a sensitivity of 85.7%, a specificity of 75% and a ROC-AUC score of 93% for the prediction of the occurrence of the disease (OAI>0%), and an accuracy of 86.7%, a sensitivity of 90.9%, a specificity of 75% and a ROC-AUC score of 84% for the prediction of the spread of the disease (OAI>10%).

Deep neural networks with powerful auto-optimization tools have been widely applied in various research fields, e.g., NLP and computer vision. However, existing neural network architectures typically are constructed using different inductive biases, e.g., preconceptions, expecting to decrease parameter search space during training, reduce computational cost or introduce expert knowledge in the neural network design. As an alternative, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) provides much better freedom for exploration, has a lower inductive bias than convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and offers good flexibility in learning complex patterns. Even though, such neural architectures are commonly built in a flat Euclidean space, which is not necessarily the optimal space for any data, and is especially not good for modeling hierarchical correlations. Hyperbolic neural networks (HNNs) have gained attention for their ability to capture hierarchical structures present in complex data types like graphs. Recently, there has been an increasing interest to extend HNNs to computer vision tasks, motivated by the observations that images possess rich hierarchical relations. However, this is generally applied by employing a Euclidean backbone for learning higher-level semantic representations and only incorporating a hyperbolic classifier for classification, which, we argue, does not make full use of the advantage of hyperbolic space. Considering the recovery of the attention-free Multilayer Perceptron(MLP), in this paper, we extend it to non-Euclidean space and propose a novel architecture, named Hyperbolic Res-MLP (HR-MLP), that leverages fully hyperbolic layers to learn feature embeddings and perform image classification in an end-to-end fashion. With the help of the proposed Lorentz cross-patch and cross-channel layers, we can directly perform operations in the hyperbolic domain with fewer parameters, making it faster to train and providing comparatively better performance than its Euclidean counterpart. Experiments on CIFAR10, CIFAR100, and MiniImageNet demonstrate a comparable and superior performance when compared to Euclidean baselines. A single paragraph of about 200 words maximum. Electroencephalography (EEG) accumulates the electrical activities of human brain. It is an easy and cost effective tool to characterize motor imagery (MI) task used in brain computer interface (BCI) implementation. The MI task is represented by short time trial of multichannel EEG. In this paper, the raw EEG is decomposed into a finite set of narrowband signals obtained from individual EEG channels using Fourier transformation based bandpass filter. Each of the subband signals represents narrowband rhythmic components which characterize the brain activities related to motor imagery. The subband signals are arranged to extent the dimension of EEG trial in spatial domain. The spatial features are extracted from the set of extended trials using common spatial pattern (CSP). An optimum number of features are used to classify the motor imagery tasks represented by EEG trials. Artificial neural network is used to classify MI tasks. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using two publicly available benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that it performs better than the recently developed algorithms.

Deep learning has been widely used in various tasks such as computer vision, natural language processing, and predictive analysis, recommendation systems in the past decade. However, practical scenarios often lack labeled data, posing challenges for traditional supervised methods. Semi-supervised classification methods address this by leveraging both labeled and unlabeled data to enhance model performance, but they face challenges in effectively utilizing unlabeled data and distinguishing reliable information from unreliable sources. This paper introduces ReliaMatch, a semi-supervised classification method that addresses these challenges by using a confidence threshold. It incorporates a curriculum learning stage, feature filtering, and pseudo-label filtering to improve classification accuracy and reliability. The feature filtering module eliminates ambiguous semantic features by comparing labeled and unlabeled data in the feature space. The pseudo-label filtering module removes unreliable pseudo-labels with low confidence, enhancing algorithm reliability. ReliaMatch employs a curriculum learning training mode, gradually increasing training dataset difficulty by combining selected samples and pseudo-labels with labeled data. This supervised approach enhances classification performance. Experimental results show that ReliaMatch effectively overcomes challenges associated with the underutilization of unlabeled data and the introduction of error information, outperforming the pseudo-label strategy in semi-supervised classification.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) are favored methods widely used in medical image processing due to their assured shown performance. Recently, the emergence of new lung diseases and the possibility of early detection of their symptoms has attracted many researchers to classify diseases by training deep CNNs on lung CT images. The trained networks are expected to distinguish between lung indications in different diseases, especially at the early stages of them. With the hope of achieving this purpose, we proposed an efficient deep CNN called AFEX-Net with adaptive feature extraction layers that successfully extract distinguishing features and classify chest CT images. The efficiency of the proposed network has two aspects: it is a lightweight network with low number of parameters and fast training and it has adaptive pooling layers and adaptive activation functions to increase its level of compatibility to the input data. The proposed network has been evaluated on a dataset with more than 10K chest CT slices, while an efficient pre-processing method is developed to remove any bias from the images. Additionally, we evaluated the performance of the proposed model on the public COVID-CTset dataset to prove the generalisability of our model. The obtained results confirm the competence of the proposed network in confronting medical images, where prompt and accurate learning is required.

With the growing popularity of smartphones, user identification has become an essential component of maintaining security and privacy. This study investigates how smartphone accelerometer data can be used to identify users, and it makes recommendations for the ideal application parts. Accelerometer data from the HMOG public dataset was used to train deep learning, conventional classifiers, and voting classifiers, which were then utilized to identify users. To enhance performance, feature selection and pre-processing techniques were researched. The results show that RFE feature selection outperforms other approaches and that LSTM followed by XGBoost has the best identification performance as indicated by a relatively large number of machine learning performance measures. The proposed identification system nevertheless performed well and outperformed existing methods, which were principally created and tested on the same HMOG public smartphone dataset, even with a larger number of users. Further work would be necessary for such an application to reach its full potential, though.

Soccer is type of sport that carries a high risk of injury. Injury is not only cause in the unlucky soccer carrier and also team performance as well as financial effects can be worse since soccer is a team-based game. The duration of recovery from a soccer injury typically relies on its type and severity. Therefore, we conduct this research in order to predict the probability of players injury type using machine learning technologies in this paper. Furthermore, we compare different machine learning models to find the best fit model. Supervised classification machine learning models are applied in this paper. We gathered information about 54 professional soccer players who are playing in the top five European leagues based on their career history.

In this paper we use quantum machine learning to detect and classify ocular diseases across age related macular degradation, cataract, diabetic, glaucoma, hypertension, and patological myopia categories versus a control group. We analyze fundus imagery from 1000 patients. Early findings indicate there may be benefit in terms of accuracy and loss function minimization of 2.07% and 1.979x respectively compared to a similar method implemented using traditional computers.

Introduction Kasai procedure in children with biliary atresia (BA) is associated with several complications in the short-term. The Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) is a validated metric in adult surgery for the analysis of complication and morbidity in surgical patients. We aimed to analyze the CCI for the first time in BA infants and to corelate its association with the outcome. Material and Methods Retrospective review of medical records of infants with type III BA undergoing Kasai procedure between January 2011 and December 2021 at our institution. All unexpected events were ranked according to the Clavien-Dindo classification and the CCI per patient was subsequently calculated. Clavien-Dindo grades, individual events, the CCI and the total event number per patient were correlated with the one- and two-year outcome post Kasai. Results 131 events were identified in 101 patients (range 0 – 11 per patient). Forty-four Grade I (33.6%), 67 Grade II (51.1%), 18 Grade III (13.7%) and two sentinel events [> Grade IV] (1.5%) were documented according to Clavien-Dindo, including one death in a cardiac-associated BA patient. None of the complications correlated significantly with a poor outcome. Sixty-three (62.4%) CCI were calculated (range 0 – 100). The mean CCI during the in-patient treatment post Kasai, was significantly higher in patients with a poorer outcome compared to patients with native liver survival at one- and two-year follow-up (22.7 21.7 vs 13.2 18.1; p=0.02). Conclusion Not the severity of complications, but the accumulation of numerous events related to Kasai procedure are associated with a poorer outcome. Therefore, the CCI is an excellent instrument for the postoperative morbidity assessment of BA patients.

This paper introduces a multi-class hand gesture recognition model developed to identify a set of defined hand gesture sequences in two-dimensional RGB video recordings. The work presents an action detection classifier that looks at both appearance and spatiotemporal parameters of consecutive frames. The classifier utilizes a convolutional-based network combined with a long-short-term memory unit. To leverage the need for a large-scale dataset, the model uses an available dataset to then adopt a technique known as transfer learning to fine-tune the model on the hand gestures of relevance. Validation curves performed over a batch size of 64 indicate an accuracy of 93.95% (± 0.37) with a mean Jaccard index of 0.812 (± 0.105) for 22 participants. The presented model illustrates the possibility of training a model with a small set of data (113,410 fully labelled frames). The proposed pipeline embraces a small-sized architecture that could facilitate its adoption.

Deep neural networks have been extensively researched in the field of document image classification to improve classification performance and have shown excellent results. However, there is little research in this area that addresses the question of how well these models would perform in a real-world environment, where the data the models are confronted with often exhibits various types of noise or distortion. In this work, we present two separate benchmark datasets, namely RVL-CDIP-D and Tobacco3482-D, to evaluate the robustness of existing state-of-the-art document image classifiers to different types of data distortions that are commonly encountered in the real world. The proposed benchmarks are generated by inserting 21 different types of data distortions with varying severity levels into the well-known document datasets RVL-CDIP and Tobacco3482, respectively, which are then used to quantitatively evaluate the impact of the different distortion types on the performance of latest document image classifiers. In doing so, we show that while the higher accuracy models also exhibit relatively higher robustness, they still severely underperform on some specific distortions, with their classification accuracies dropping from ~90% to as low as ~40% in some cases. We also show that some of these high accuracy models perform even worse than the baseline AlexNet model in the presence of distortions, with the relative decline in their accuracy sometimes reaching as high as 300-450% that of AlexNet. The proposed robustness benchmarks are made available to the community and may aid future research in this area.

Exploring new ways to represent and discover organic molecules is critical for developing novel therapies. With recent advances in bioinformatics, virtual screening of databases is possible. However, biochemical data must be encoded using computer algorithms to make them machine-readable, taking into account distance and similarity measures to support tasks such as similarity searching. Motivated by the ubiquity of the carbon element and the structured patterns that emerge, we propose a parametric approach to molecular encodings of carbon-based multilevel atomic neighborhoods. It implements a walk along the carbon chain of an organic molecule to compute different representations of its feature encoding in the form of a binary or numerical array that can be exported later into an image. Resulting encodings are reproducible and readily formatted for various domain tasks including machine learning tasks. This approach was evaluated using a 10-fold stratified cross validation for binary classification with eight data sets and six different encodings (384 models) in the domain knowledge of cell-penetrating peptides. The parametric approach is built on open-source software and is implemented as a Python package (cmangoes). Source code and documentation are available at https://github.com/ghattab/cmangoes.

：Sleep stage on the whole night is not steady. Sleepers generally pass through three to five cycles. In each cycle, there are occur four typical sleep stages, such as wake stage (WS), light stage (LS), deep sleep (DS), rapid eye movement sleep stage (REM). According to the natural routine, in this paper, we investigate the stage transition and analyze the feature of stage transition using the local cluster Algorithm (LCA). Two-cycle sleep model (TCSM) is proposed to automatically classify sleep stages using over-night continuous heart rate variability (HRV) data. The generated model is based on the characteristics of the nested cycle's sleep stage distribution and the transition probabilities of sleep stages. Experiments were conducted using a public data set including 400 healthy subjects (female 239, male 161) and the model’s classification accuracy was evaluated for four sleep stages: WS, LS, DS, REM. The experimental results showed that based on the TCSM model, the segmentation classification of pure sleep is 5.2% higher than that of the traditional method, and the accuracy of segmentation classification is 11.2% higher than the traditional sleep staging accuracy. The experimental performance is promising in terms of the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity rates compared with the ones of the state-of-the-art methods. The study contributes to improve the quality of sleep monitoring in daily life using easy-to-wear HRV sensors.

Selection of biologically relevant genes from high dimensional expression data is a key research problem in gene expression genomics. Most of the available gene selection methods are either based on relevancy or redundancy measure, which are usually adjudged through post selection classification accuracy. Through these methods the ranking of genes was done on a single high-dimensional expression data, which leads to the selection of spuriously associated and redundant genes. Hence, we developed a statistical approach through combining Support Vector Machine with Maximum Relevance and Minimum Redundancy under a sound statistical setup for the selection of biologically relevant genes. Here, the genes are selected through statistical significance values computed using a non-parametric test statistic under a bootstrap based subject sampling model. Further, a systematic and rigorous evaluation of the proposed approach with nine existing competitive methods was carried on six different real crop gene expression datasets. This performance analysis was carried out under three comparison settings, i.e. subject classification, biological relevant criteria based on quantitative trait loci, and gene ontology. Our analytical results showed that the proposed approach selects genes that are more biologically relevant as compared to the existing methods. Moreover, the proposed approach was also found to be better with respect to the competitive existing methods. The proposed statistical approach provides a framework for combining filter, and wrapper methods of gene selection.

The article describes a classification solution for amber stones. The problem of classifying amber is known for a long time among jewelers and artisans of amber art. Existing solutions can classify amber pieces according to color, but a need to classify by shape and texture is not satisfied up to now. The proposed solution is capable of classifying the gemstones according to a shape. Amber can be considered as a specific object since the form is difficult to define unambiguously. Data for amber experiments was gathered from amber art craftsmen. In the proposed solution amber form can be classified into 10 different classes (7 classes chosen during the experiment).

A pixel-based segmentation method was demonstrated to be confounded by developmental stage in estimation of flowering of mango. Categorization of panicles into three developmental stages was undertaken with a single and a two-stage deep learning framework (YOLO and R2CNN), using either upright or rotated bounding boxes. For a validation image set and for total panicle count, the models MangoYOLO(-upright), MangoYOLO-rotated, YOLOv3-rotated, R2CNN(-rotated) and R2CNN-upright achieved: (i) RMSEs of 25.6, 16.0, 15.4, 25.8 and 32.3 panicles per tree image, (ii) Mean average precision (mAP) scores of 72.2, 69.1, 65.0, 62.5 and 70.9% and (iii) weighted F1-scores of 76.5, 76.1, 74.9, 74.0 and 82.0, respectively. For a test set of images involving a different orchard and cultivar and use of a different camera, the R2 for machine vision to human count of panicles per tree was 0.86, 0.80, 0.83, 0.81 and 0.76 for the same models, respectively. Thus, models generalised well, but with no consistent benefit from use of rotated over upright bounding boxes. While the YOLOv3-rotated model was superior in terms of total panicle count, the R2CNN-upright model was more accurate for panicle stage classification. To demonstrate practical application, panicle counts were made weekly for an orchard of 994 trees, with a peak detection routine applied to document multiple flowering events.

Automation is at the core of modern industry. It aims to increase production rates, decrease production costs, and reduce human intervention in order to avoid human mistakes and time delays during manufacturing. On the other hand, human assistance is usually required to customize products and reconfigure control systems through a special process interface called Human Machine Interface (HMI). Machine Learning (ML) algorithms can effectively be used to resolve this tradeoff between full automation and human assistance. This paper provides an example of the industrial application of ML algorithms to help human operators save their mental effort and avoid time delays and unintended mistakes for the sake of high production rates. Based on real-time sensor measurements, several ML algorithms have been tried to classify paper rolls according to paper grammage in a white paper mill. The performance evaluation shows that the AdaBoost algorithm is the best ML algorithm for this application with classification accuracy (CA), precision, and recall of 97.1%. The generalization of the proposed approach for achieving a cost-effective mill construction by reducing the total number of the required physical sensors will be the subject of our future research.

1) Background: One of the most common cancer that affects men worldwide and North American men is prostate cancer. Gleason score is a pathological grading system to examine the potential aggressiveness of the disease in the prostate tissue. The advancement in computing and next-generation sequencing technology now allow us to study the genomic profiles of patients in association with their different Gleason score more accurately and effectively. 2) Methods: In this study, we used a novel machine learning method to analyze gene expression of prostate tumors with different Gleason scores, and identify potential genetic biomarkers for each Gleason group. We obtained a publicly-available RNA-Seq dataset of a cohort of 104 prostate cancer patients from the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI) Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository, and categorized patients based on their Gleason scores to create a hierarchy of disease progression. A hierarchical model with standard classifiers in different Gleason groups, also known as nodes, was developed to identify and predict nodes based on their mRNA or gene expression. In each node, patient samples were analyzed via class imbalance and hybrid feature selection techniques to build the prediction model. The outcome from analysis of each node is a set of genes that can differentiate each Gleason group from the remaining groups. To validate the proposed method, the set of identified genes are used to classify a second dataset of 499 prostate cancer patients collected from cBioportal [1]. 3) Results: The overall accuracy of applying this novel method to the first dataset was 93.3%, and further validated to 87% accuracy using the second dataset. This method also identified genes that were not previously reported as potential biomarkers for specific Gleason groups. In particular, PIAS3 was identified as a potential biomarker for Gleason score 4+3=7, and UBE2V2 for Gleason score 6. 4) Insight: Previous reports show that the genes predicted by this newly proposed method strongly correlate with prostate cancer development and progression. Furthermore, pathway analysis shows that both PIAS3 and UBE2V2 share similar protein interaction pathways, the JAK/STAT signaling process.

It is demonstrated in this study that PhabrOmeter creates genuine wrinkle on fabrics comparable to that in AATCC specifications, and measures fabric wrinkle recovery values fast with repeatable and reliable results with high resolution, over wide range of fabric types. It thus provides an appealing alternative to the existing test methods that are known to be slow, insensitive and unreliable. In addition, with enormous varieties of fabrics, we used a new criterion termed fabric linear density λ so that fabrics can in general be divided into relatively homogeneous groups for further study. The calculation and application of this parameter are showed in this report.

Retinoid X receptor (RXR) antagonists are not only useful as chemical tools for biological research, but also are candidate drugs for treatment of various diseases, including diabetes and allergy, although no RXR antagonist has yet been approved for clinical use. In this review, we describe currently available RXR antagonists, their structural classification, and their evaluation, focusing on the latest research.

This paper address the development of a new technic in the sleep analysis domain. Sleep is defined as a periodic physiological state during which vigilance is suspended and reactivity to external stimulations diminished. We sleep on average between six and nine hours per night and our sleep is composed of four to six cycles of about 90-minutes each. Each of these cycles is composed of a succession of several stages of sleep, more or less deep. The analysis of sleep is usually done using a polysomnography. This examination consists of recording, among other things, electrical cerebral activity by electroencephalography (EEG), ocular movements by electrooculography (EOG) and chin muscle tone by electromyography (EMG). The recording is done mostly in a hospital, more specifically in a service for monitoring the pathologies related to sleep. The readings are then interpreted manually by an expert to generate a hypnogram, a curve showing the succession of sleep stages during the night in 30-second epochs. The proposed method is based on the follow-up of the thermal signature that makes it possible to classify the activity into three classes: "awakening", "calm sleep" and "agitated sleep". The contribution of this non-invasive method is part of the screening of sleep disorders, to be validated by a more complete analysis of the sleep. The measure provided by this new system, based on temperature monitoring (patient and ambient), aims to be integrated into the tele-medicine platform developed within the framework of the Smart-EEG project by the SYEL - SYstèmes ELectroniques team. Analysis of the data collected during the first surveys carried out with this method showed a correlation between thermal signature and activity during sleep. The advantage of this method lies in its simplicity and the possibility of carrying out measurements of activity during sleep and without direct contact with the patient at home or hospitals.

Abstract: The traditional model of closed circuit ball milling systems has been used for several decades, however, if the classifier of the closed circuit ball mill system performs the duties of both pre-classification and check-classification, the characterization error of the traditional model is large. To address this problem, a new model is obtained by modifying and supplementing the traditional one. The most important feature of the new model compared to the traditional model is that the circulating load is considered to be the fresh feed for the entire system rather than the ball mill. The error between the slurry level height calculated using the traditional model and the actual is 52.31%, which is 13.77 times higher than that of the new model. When the relative capacity varies greatly, that of the ball mill calculated by the traditional model fluctuates between 0.95 and 1.15, while the new model is 0.6 to 1.4. The new model has a higher accuracy than the traditional model in characterizing the production status of the grinding system, which is of some significance for industrial production.

Wearable technology will become available and allow prolonged electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring in the home environment of patients with epilepsy. Neurologists analyse the EEG visually and annotate all seizures, which patients often under report. Visual analysis of a 24 hour EEG recording typically takes one to two hours. Reliable automated seizure detection algorithms will be crucial to reduce this analysis. We study a dataset of behind-the-ear EEG measurements. Our first aim was to develop a methodology to reduce the EEG dataset by classifying part of the data automatically, while retaining 100% detection sensitivity (DS). Prediction confidences are determined by temperature scaling of the classification model outputs and trust scores. A DS of approximately 90% (99%) can be achieved when automatically classifying around 90% (60%) of the data. Perfect DS can be achieved when automatically classifying 50% of the data. Our second contribution demonstrates that a common modelling strategy, where predictions from several short EEG segments are used to obtain a final prediction, can be improved by filtering out untrustworthy segments with low trust scores. The false detection rate shows a relative decrease between 21% and 43%, and the DS shows a small increase or decrease.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has actualized human papillomavirus (HPV) virome profiling for in-depth investigation of viral evolution and pathogenesis. However, viral computational analysis remains a bottleneck due to semantic discrepancies between computational tools and curated reference genomes. To address this, we developed and tested automated workflows for HPV taxonomic profiling and visualization using a customized Papillomavirus database in CLC Microbial Genomics Module. HPV genomes from Papilloma Virus Episteme were customized and incorporated into CLC “ready-to-use” workflows for stepwise data processing to include: 1) Taxonomic Analysis, 2) Estimate Alpha/Beta Diversities, and 3) Map Reads to Reference. Low-grade (n = 95) and high-grade (n = 60) Pap smears were tested with ensuing collective runtimes: Taxonomic Analysis (36 min); Alpha/Beta Diversities (5 sec); Map Reads (45 min). Tabular output conversion to visualizations entailed 1-2 keystrokes. Biodiversity analysis between low- (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) revealed loss of species richness and gain of dominance by HPV-16 in HSIL. Integrating clinically relevant, taxonomized HPV reference genomes within automated workflows proved to be an ultra-fast method of virome profiling. The entire process named “HPV DeepSeq” provides a simple, accurate and practical means of NGS data analysis for a broad range of applications in viral research.

The quality and quantity of potatoes are significantly impacted by several diseases, such as early blight and late blight, and manual interpretation of these leaf diseases is time-consuming and inconvenient. Fortunately, leaf appearance is used to detect diseases in potato plants. Productivity will considerably rise if the infections are detected early. Different types of image processing methods and machine learning methods are used for early recognition of those diseases from leaf images so that the product losses are decreased significantly. For the incredible and marvelous performance of CNN, it is the most popular deep learning method that is used immensely for the recognition of leaf diseases from images. Several pretrained deep learning models, such as VGG16, ResNet50, InceptionV3, MobileNetV2, Xception, and a deep learning model developed using CNN, are employed for potato leaf disease classification and recognition on the same dataset. The transfer learning technique is applied to the pretrained model and the data augmentation technique is applied to the Proposed CNN model for potato disease classification from leaf samples. Compared to pretrained models, the proposed CNN model offers the lowest loss and highest accuracy for potato leaf disease detection while using fewer parameters and layers. It achieves the best performance with a test accuracy of 99.33% compared to other Pretrained models used in the diagnosis of potato leaf disease.

It is important for food recognition to separate each ingredient within a food image at the pixel level. In this paper, we propose a new approach to segment ingredients by utilizing a CNN-based Single-Ingredient Classification Model. In detail, we firstly introduce a standardized biological-based hierarchical ingredient structure and construct a single-ingredient image dataset based on this structure. Then, we build a single-ingredient classification model based on a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that utilizes an attention mechanism. Afterwards, we propose a new framework for segmentation using the above single-ingredient classification model as the backbone. In this framework, two methods are involved in segmenting ingredients in the food images. We introduce five evaluation metrics (IoU, Dice, Purity, Entirety, Loss of GTs) to assess the performance of ingredient segmentation in terms of ingredient classification. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving an maximal mIoU of 0.65, mDice of 0.77, mPurity of 0.83, mEntirety of 0.80, and mLoGTs of 0.06 on the FoodSeg103 dataset. The results confirm that our CNN-based architecture achieves higher segmentation performance compared to ResNet18 and EfficientNet-B0 when used as the backbone for ingredient segmentation. We believe that our ingredient segmentation approach lays the foundation for subsequent ingredient recognition.

During the last years some new variants of Permutation entropy have been introduced and applied to EEG analysis, among them a conditional variant and variants using some additional metric information or being based on entropies different from the Shannon entropy. In some situations it is not completely clear what kind of information the new measures and their algorithmic implementations provide. We discuss the new developments and illustrate them for EEG data.

Drones are being used more and more frequently and in various ways to attack people and critical infrastructures, which increases their level of danger and makes early detection and risk assessment even more difficult. There is no ultimate drone sensor. Rather, drones can only be effectively detected, if suitable sensor technologies are integrated within a system. Among the best suited sensorics for this purpose are radar and optical sensors, because the advantage of the radar, given by the long detection range, can be well combined with the additional visual-based information gained from a camera in the mid- and short-range, where usually the radar fails detecting micro drones. In this paper, a modular drone detection and assistance system MODEAS is presented, which can be used to automatically detect and track drones within a range up to some kilometers on the sky, but also in complex urban environments, where buildings and vegetation offer a perfect background for camouflage. The system provides an early detection of flying objects as potential drones, when those are not at all or only as small dots visible for the human eye. Main strengths of the system are the robust AI detection to differentiate such an object against clutter (birds, clouds) and its further classification by model and payload recognition, the latter aspect being considered as an indication of dangerousness. Moreover, once a drone is detected, the system follows it automatically, precisely and smoothly with a high-resolution pan-tilt-camera, measuring the distance to the sensor station with a laser rangefinder, compute the geocoordinates and visualize them live on a map. To improve the precision of the detection, a multisensorial fusion of all sensor detections is performed. Furthermore, alarms may be generated when a drone enters a restricted area.

In this paper, we present the idea of Self Supervised learning on the Shape Completion and Classification of point clouds. Most 3D shape completion pipelines utilize autoencoders to extract features from point clouds used in downstream tasks such as Classification, Segmentation, Detection, and other related applications. Our idea is to add Contrastive Learning into Auto-Encoders to learn both global and local feature representations of point clouds. We use a combination of Triplet Loss and Chamfer distance to learn global and local feature representations. To evaluate the performance of embeddings for Classification, we utilize the PointNet classifier. We also extend the number of classes to evaluate our model from 4 to 10 to show the generalization ability of learned features. Based on our results, embedding generated from the Contrastive autoencoder enhances Shape Completion and Classification performance from 84.2% to 84.9% of point clouds achieving the state-of-the-art results with 10 classes.

Historic sites are important components of every city's cultural history because they preserve rich historical knowledge and distinctive values passed down from previous generations to the present. Due to the progress of urbanization and modernization, many historic sites face pressure from damage and transformation. In this paper, a method for assessing cultural heritage damage was developed to measure the extent of spatial damage in historic sites. Using sample data obtained in Xiyang, Qixian, and Xiaoyi, all historic cities in Shanxi Province, Mainland China, and combined weights were estimated using the Delphi technique and the CRITIC weight method. Following this, the Spatial Damage Degree Model (SDDM) based on K-means cluster analysis and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classification was developed. The findings show that the model efficiently solves the problem of assessing spatial damage levels in historic sites. Through multiple linear regression analysis, it was shown that the damage to historic sites was predominantly caused by three factors: natural erosion, construction damage, and planning and policy. SDDM was used to calculate the spatial damage levels of historic sites, allowing conservators to fully comprehend the features and concerns related to historic sites. As a result, more scientific and rational preservation approaches may be developed, improving the efficiency of historic site restoration and conservation and encouraging the sustainable development of urban and rural heritage.

Cancer is a condition in which the body's cells proliferate unchecked. Skin cancer is one of the deadliest diseases that impacts the skin on many levels. There are several different types of the disease, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanocytic nevus. Due to its increased prevalence, skin cancer, in particular melanoma, is be-coming a serious health problem. Early identification of skin lesions is crucial for successful treatment. Due to their resemblance, many skin lesions are misclassified, which is a severe issue. Researchers seek computer-aided diagnostic tools for early malignant tumor detection. First, a new model based on the combination of "you only look once" (YOLOv5) and "ResNet50" is proposed for melanoma detection with its degree using humans against a machine with 10,000 training images (HAM10000). Second, feature maps integrate gradient change, which allows rapid inference, boosts precision, and reduces the number of hyperparameters in the model, making it smaller. Finally, to get the desired outcomes, the current YOLOv5 model is changed by adding new classes for dermatoscopic images of typical lesions with pigmented skin. The pro-posed approach improves melanoma detection with a real-time speed of 0.4 ms non-maximum suppression (NMS) per image. The performance metrics average is 99.0%, 98.6%, 98.8%, 99.5, 98.3%, and 98.7% for precision, recall, dice similarity coefficient (DSC), accuracy, mean average precision (MAP) from 0.0 to 0.5, and MAP from 0.5 to 0.95, respectively. Compared to cur-rent melanoma detection approaches, the provided approach is more efficient using deep fea-tures.

Advances in DNA sequencing technology are facilitating genomic analyses of unprecedented scope and scale, widening the gap between our abilities to generate and fully exploit biological sequence data. Comparable analytical challenges are encountered in other data-intensive fields involving sequential data, such as signal processing, in which dimensionality reduction (i.e., compression) methods are routinely used to lessen the computational burden of analyses. In this work we explore the application of dimensionality reduction methods to numerically represent high-throughput sequence data for three important biological applications of virus sequence data: reference-based mapping, short sequence classification and de novo assembly. Despite using highly compressed sequence transformations to accelerate the processes, our sequence processing approach yielded comparable accuracy to existing approaches, and are ideally suited for sequences originating from highly diverse virus populations. We demonstrate the application of our methodology to both synthetic and real viral pathogen sequence data. Our results show that the use of highly compressed sequence approximations can provide accurate results and that useful analytical performance can be retained and even enhanced through appropriate dimensionality reduction of sequence data.

This comparative analysis highlights the distinctive advantages of each method, their performance across various domains such as healthcare, finance, and risk assessment, and the growing potential of hybrid models that combine the strengths of these techniques. The paper concludes by discussing future research opportunities, particularly in enhancing model interpretability and scalability while addressing domain-specific challenges.

. Identifying students who might have difficulty in their course of studies ahead of time is crucial. There can be many reasons for performance issues, such as personality, family, social, and/or economic. We advocate that educational systems should use machine learning to predict students’ performance based on performance factors. This would allow educational professionals and institutions to put in place a preventive plan to help students towards achievements of their educational goals and success. In this chapter, we propose a student performance prediction method and evaluate its performance. We provide a taxonomy of performance factors that help to gauge students performance from different perspectives and give insights on the categories and features that have more significant impact on students’ performance. The results of this work can be used by education institutions to put in place a student-centric approach to tackle performance issues before they create long-term effects on student’s life. In addition, it will help education policymakers to introduce a tailored approach for the population in specific areas.

Colonoscopy is used for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Extracting details of the colonoscopy findings from free text in electronic health records (EHRs) can be used to determine patient risk for CRC and colorectal screening strategies. In this study, we developed and evaluated the accuracy of a deep learning model framework to extract information for the clinical decision support system to analyze relevant free-text colonoscopy reports, including indications, pathology, and findings notes. The Bio-Bi-LSTM-CRF framework was developed using Bidirectional Long Short-term Memory (Bi-LSTM) and Conditional Random Fields (CRF) to extract several clinical features from these free-text reports, including indications for the colonoscopy, findings during the colonoscopy, and pathology of the resected material. We then trained the Bio-Bi-LSTM-CRF and existing Bi-LSTM-CRF models on 80% of 4,000 manually annotated notes obtained from the colonoscopy reports of 3,867 patients. The clinical notes were from a group of patients aged over 40 years old enrolled in four Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. A total of 10% of the remaining annotated notes were used to train hyperparameter, while the remaining 10% were used to evaluate the accuracy of our model (Bio-Bi-LSTM-CRF) and to compare the results with the outcomes obtained using Bi-LSTM-CRF. The results of our experiments showed that the bidirectional encoder representations by integrating dictionary function vector from Bio-Bi-LSTM-CRF and strategies character sequence embedding approach is an effective way to identify colonoscopy features from EHR-extracted clinical notes. Therefore, the Bio-Bi-LSTM-CRF model is concluded to be capable of creating new opportunities to identify patients at risk for colon cancer and to study their health outcomes.

This research assesses the classification of Arabic coffee into three primary variations (light, medium, and dark) using simulated data based on actual measurements of color information, antioxidant laboratory tests, and chemical composition tests. Two types of simulated data were generated, with the standard deviation of the measures varied. Multiple classifiers were used for classification. The findings demonstrate the use of color information in accurately distinguishing Arabic coffee types. The different CIE color values, as well as the excellent connection between color information and coffee classes, lead to flawless classification results. However, depending primarily on antioxidant information results in lower classification performance, with variability amongst classifiers due to increasing data complexity. Chemical composition information, on the other hand, possesses outstanding discriminatory strength, allowing faultless classification on its own. Certain characteristics, such as crude protein and crude fiber, show strong correlations and are critical in the classification of coffee types. Based on the findings, it is recommended to create a mobile application that uses image recognition to analyze coffee color while providing chemical composition information. End users, such as consumers, will be able to make informed judgments regarding their coffee preferences owing to this application.

This paper presents novel feature descriptors and classification algorithms for automated scoring of HER2 in Whole Slide Images (WSI) of breast cancer histology slides. Since a large amount of processing is involved in analyzing WSI images, the primary design goal has been to keep the computational complexity to the minimum possible level and to use simple, yet robust feature descriptors that can provide accurate classification of the slides. We propose two types of feature descriptors that encode important information about staining patterns and the percentage of staining present in ImmunoHistoChemistry (IHC) stained slides. The first descriptor is called a characteristic curve which is a smooth non-increasing curve that represents the variation of percentage of staining with saturation levels. The second new descriptor introduced in this paper is an LBP feature curve which is also a non-increasing smooth curve that represents the local texture of the staining patterns. Both descriptors show excellent interclass variance and intraclass correlation, and are suitable for the design of automatic HER2 classification algorithms. This paper gives the detailed theoretical aspects of the feature descriptors and also provides experimental results and comparative analysis.

Microarray gene expression analysis is a powerful technique used in cancer classification and research to identify and understand gene expression patterns that can differentiate between different cancer types, subtypes, and stages. However, microarray databases are highly redundant, inherently nonlinear, and noisy. Therefore, extracting meaningful information from such a huge database is a challenging one. The paper adopts the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Mixture Model (MM) for dimensionality reduction and utilizes the Dragonfly optimization algorithm as the feature selection technique. The classifiers employed in this research are Nonlinear Regression, Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree, Random Forest and SVM (RBF). The classifiers' performances are analyzed with and without feature selection methods. Finally, Adaptive Moment Estimation (Adam) and Random Adaptive Moment Estimation (RanAdam) hyper-parameter tuning techniques are used as improvisation techniques for classifiers. The SVM (RBF) classifier with the Fast Fourier Transform Dimensionality Reduction method and Dragonfly feature selection achieved the highest accuracy of 98.343% with RanAdam hyperparameter tuning compared to other classifiers.

The changing of land use and land cover (LULC) are both affected by climate and human activity and affect climate, biological diversity, and human well-being. Accurate and timely information about the LULC pattern and change is crucial for land management decision-making, ecosystem monitoring, and urban planning, especially in developing economies undergoing industrialization, urbanization, and globalization. Biodiversity degradation and urban expansion in eastern China are research hot-spots. However, the influence of LULC changes on the region remains largely unexplored. Here, an object-based and multi-temporal image analysis approach was developed to detect how LULC changes during 1985-2015 in the Tiaoxi watershed (Zhejiang province, eastern China) using Landsat TM and OLI data. The main objective of this study is to improve the accuracy of unsupervised change detection from object-based and multi-temporal images. To this end, a total of seven LULC maps are generated with multi-temporal images. A random stratified sample design was used for assessing change detection accuracy. The proposed method achieved an overall accuracy of 91.86%, 92.14%, 92.00%, and 93.86% for 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, respectively. Nevertheless, the proposed method, in conjunction with object-oriented and multi-temporal satellite images, offers a robust and flexible approach to LULC changes mapping that helps with emergency response and government management. Urbanization and agriculture efficiency are the main reasons for LULC changes in the region. We anticipate that this freely available data will improve the modeling for surface forcing, provide evidence of changes in LULC, and inform water-management decision-making.

This paper presents an Artificial Intelligence approach to mining context and emotions related to olfactory cultural heritage narratives, in particular to fairy tales. We provide an overview of the role of smell and emotions in literature, as well as highlight the importance of olfactory experience and emotions from psychology and linguistic perspectives. We introduce a methodology for extracting smells and emotions from text, as well as demonstrate the context-based visualizations related to smells and emotions implemented in a novel Smell Tracker tool. The evaluation is performed using a collection of fairy tales from Grimm and Andersen. We find out that fairy tales often connect smell with emotional charge of situations. The experimental results show that we can detect smells and emotions with F1 score of 92.7 and 79.2, respectively.

Tsetlin machine (TM) is a novel machine learning approach that implements propositional logic to perform different tasks like classification and regression. The TM can not only achieves competitive accuracy in these tasks but it is also able to provide results that are explainable and easy to implement using simple hardware. The TM learns using clauses based off the features of the data. Final classification is done using a combination of the clauses. In this paper, we propose the novel idea of adding regularizers to TM, called as Regularized TM (RegTM), to improve generalization. Regularizers have been widely used in machine learning to improve accuracy. We explore different regularization strategies and how they would influence performance. We show the feasibility of our methodology by different experiments on benchmark datasets.

Machine learning methods used for classification can face challenges due to class imbalance, where a certain class is underrepresented. Over/under-sampling of minority/majority class observations, or model selection for ensemble methods alone, may not be effective if the class imbalance ratio is very high. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method called enhance tree ensemble (ETE) based on generating synthetic data for minority class observations in conjunction with tree selection based on their performance on the training data. The proposed method first generates minority class instances to balance the training data and then uses the idea of tree selection by leveraging out-of-bag (〖ETE〗_OOB) and sub-samples (〖ETE〗_SS) observations, respectively. The efficacy of the proposed method is assessed using twenty benchmark problems for binary classification with moderate to extreme class imbalance, comparing it against other well-known methods such as optimal tree ensemble (OTE), SMOTE random forest (〖RF〗_SMOTE), over-sampling random forest (〖RF〗_OS), under-sampling random forest (〖RF〗_US), k-nearest-neighbor (k-NN), support vector machine (SVM), tree, and artificial neural network (ANN). Performance metrics such as classification error rate and precision are used for evaluation purposes. The analyses of the study revealed that the proposed method, based on data balancing and model selection, yielded better results than the other methods.

With a growing number of PCMs and new, suitable PCM candidates, an overview is not only important, but also increasingly complex. Classification of PCM was thus changed significantly in the past decades. A review of classification of PCMs from recent years shows that not only different classification criteria are used, but more important that they are often mixed, used inconsistently, even without a clear goal. Focusing on the main goal of current classification schemes, to give an overview of the material options for the search for new, suitable PCM candidates, including already established PCMs, a consistent classification is developed in a desktop study. For this, first, the general options for classification criteria are reviewed, and then the appropriate ones selected. Then, based on them a new, revised PCM classification is suggested. It is specifically detailed with regard to mixtures; for binary mixtures it is based on a literature review performed within the study. The result also stresses the importance of specific R&D: for pure substances the sources and the chemical modification, and for mixtures their optimization by new compositions, additives, etc.

In the realm of agribusiness, transformative shifts are underway, propelled by the growing demands and expanding scales of grain production. This evolution calls for a critical reevaluation of the existing paradigms in coffee production and marketing paradigms, with a specific focus on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI). This work aims to review, synthesize, and summarize the available data regarding how Machine Learning (ML) has been used to detect and classify characteristics in coffee beans and leaves. For this purpose, a comprehensive literature review of the most significant research contributions describing the application of AI for advanced classification techniques in coffee agriculture has been carried out. Our analysis suggests that implementing AI technologies allows the classification of coffee, encompassing various attributes such as maturity, roast intensity, disease identification, flavor profiles, and overall quality. More largely, this technological advancement holds the potential to revolutionize coffee farming by providing producers and agricultural specialists with sophisticated tools to enhance production efficiency, minimize costs, and improve the accuracy and confidence of their decision-making processes.

Accurate crop diseases classification is crucial for ensuring food security and enhancing agricultural productivity. However, existing crop disease classification algorithms primarily focus on a single image modality and typically require a large number of samples. Our research counters these issues by using pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLMs), which enhances multimodal synergy for better crop disease classification than traditional unimodal approaches. Firstly, we apply the multimodal model Qwen-VL to generate meticulous textual descriptions for representative disease images selected through clustering from the training set, which will serve as prompt text for generating classifier weights. Compared to using solely the language model for prompt text generation, this approach better captures and conveys fine-grained and image-specific information, thereby enhancing prompt quality. Secondly, we integrate the cross-attention and the SE (Squeeze-and-Excitation) attention into the training-free mode VLCD (Vision-Language model for Crop Diseases classification) and the training-required mode VLCD-T (VLCD-Training) respectively for prompt text processing, enhancing classifier weights by emphasizing key text features. Experimental outcomes conclusively prove our method’s heightened classification effectiveness in few-shot crop disease scenarios, tackling data limitations and intricate disease recognition issues. It offers a pragmatic tool for agricultural pathology and reinforces the smart farming surveillance infrastructure.

Traffic accidents are among the most common causes of death worldwide. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), 50 million people are involved in traffic accidents every year. Canada, particularly Montreal, is not immune to this problem. Data from the Société de l’Assurance Automobile du Québec (SAAQ) shows that there were 392 deaths on Québec roads in 2022, 38 of them related to the city of Montreal. This value represents an increase of 29.3% for the city of Montreal compared to the average for the years 2017 to 2021. In this context, it is important to take concrete measures to improve traffic safety in the city of Montreal. In this article, we present a web-based solution based on machine learning that predicts the severity of traffic accidents in the city of Montreal. This solution uses dataset of traffic accidents that occurred in Montreal between 2012 and 2021. Classification algorithms such as eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting (GB) were used to develop the prediction model. When evaluating the prediction model, performance metrics such as precision, recall, F1 score, and accuracy are taken into account. The performance analysis shows an excellent accuracy of 96% for the prediction model based on the XGBoost classifier. The other models (CatBoost, RF, GB) achieved 95%, 93% and 89% accuracy, respectively. The prediction model based on the XGBoost classifier was deployed using a client-server web application managed by Swagger-UI and the Flask Python framework.

The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and focus on their management. The therapeutic options differ in each case depending on the location, size, and adjacent anatomical content of the AVM. The surgical resection by microsurgery is the preferred therapeutic option for a small and superficial AVM not related to an eloquent area (e.g., Spetzler-Martin grades I and II). On the other hand, when facing a very large AVM (e.g., Spetzler-Martin grades IV and V), the conservative and symptomatic treatment remains the most common management option due to the high risk-benefit ratio of any intervention. The management of AVMs with features between these two extremes (e.g., Spetzler-Martin grade III) remains less stablished. Stereotactic radiosurgery usually is the option for deep and small AVMs. Embolization has been usually considered before surgery for occlusion of deep arterial supplies of an AVM or to decrease its nidus size. Young patients and AVMs with compact nidus are features that weight in favor of a surgical approach. For the minority of cases that have the AVM diagnosed before bleeding the most common recommendation is to treat conservatively and particularly to avoid embolization. In summary, surgery is the gold-standard approach to cure an AVM and the choice for small AVMs located in non-eloquent area and with superficial venous drainage; large AVMs are mostly treated conservatively; the treatment of AVM with intermediate features is tailored, chosen with the guidance of classification systems, and encompasses radiosurgery and pre-operative embolization.

Most common classifications for acetabular bone defects are based on radiographic two-dimension imaging, with low reliability and reproducibility. With the rise of modern processing techniques based on 3D modelling, methodologies for volumetric quantification of acetabular bone loss are available. Our study aims to describe a new methodology for quantitative assess-ment of acetabular defects, based on 3D modelling, focused on the surface analysis of the integrity of the main anatomical structures of the acetabulum represented by four corresponding sectors (posterior, superior, anterior, and medial). The defect entity is measured as the Area Increase Ra-tio (AIR) detected in all the sectors analyzed on three planes of view (frontal, sagittal and axial) compared to healthy hemipelvises. The analysis was performed on 3D-models from the CT-scan of six exemplary specimens with a unilateral pathological hemipelvis. AIR between the native and the pathological hemipelvis was calculated for each sector, for a total of 48 analysis (range, +0.93% - +171.35%). AIR of >50% were found in 22/48(45.8%) sectors and affected mostly the posterior, medial and superior sectors (20/22, 90.9%). Qualitative analysis showed consistency of the data with the morphological features of the defects. Further studies with larger samples are needed to validate the methodology and potentially develop a new classification scheme.

The electrical energy supply relies on the satisfactory operation of insulators. The ultrasound recorded from insulators in different conditions has a time series output, which can be used to classify faulty insulators. The random convolutional kernel transform (Rocket) algorithms use convolutional filters to extract various features from time series data. This paper proposes the combination of Rocket algorithms, machine learning classifiers, and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) methods, such as complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN), empirical wavelet transform (EWT), and variational mode decomposition (VMD). The results show that the EMD methods combined with MiniRocket, significantly improve the accuracy of logistic regression in insulator fault diagnosis. The proposed strategy achieves respectively an accuracy of 0.992 using CEEMDAN, 0.995 with EWT, and 0.980 with VMD. These results highlight the potential of incorporating EMD methods in insulator failure detection models to enhance the safety and dependability of power systems.

Evolutionary Machine Learning (EML) has demonstrated its effectiveness in modeling various real-world application domains, including the dynamics of diseases and the creation of predictive models across diverse fields. However, the challenge of data imbalance adversely impacts the performance of EML models. While strategies involving misclassification costs or cost-sensitive learning exist to address this issue, their integration into EML has yet to be thoroughly explored. This paper aims to fill this gap by investigating the application of cost-sensitive EML for intelligent health risk prediction. More specifically, this paper delves into the utilization of cost-sensitive genetic programming (CSGP) and cost-sensitive genetic algorithms (CSGA), which are among the most widely used algorithms in the EML category. The study entails training CSGP and CSGA to predict the early onset of three chronic conditions (hypertension, diabetes, and fatty acid-related disorders) through the development of an EML model. Subsequently, the model's performance is evaluated through standard fitness functions such as sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score. From the experimental results, EML models demonstrate promising results in identifying the occurrence of chronic diseases. Further optimization of the cost-sensitive EML model holds the potential for enhanced outcomes in modeling medical problems.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is known as one of the dominant cardiac disease that is associated with severe consequences such as risk of strokes. This cardiac arrhythmia can be efficiently diagnosed using EEG signals. However, AF episodes in EEG records are not always permanent for all subjects. In addition, lengthy subject preparation and ECG recording sessions makes this practice time consuming and not attractive for efficient diagnosis. One attractive solution for this problem will be the use of wearable Internet of Medical Things IoMT devices for EEG recording and AF detection. From another side the use machine learning for efficient diagnosis could provide high accurate diagnosis. However, the deployment of these wireless wearable devices faces the problems of limited processing capabilities and of energy scarcity. In this context, the design of energy efficient accurate on-sensor AF detection scheme using machine learning algorithms still requires a focused research effort. This paper proposes a wearable solution for ECG-based processing scheme for embedded AF detection. The proposed method achieved 100% sensitivity and 94.5% of specificity and accuracy of around 97.4 % for wide range of subjects while showing low energy-consumption. The obtained results show the efficiency of using Logistic Regression algorithm for accurate AF detection and attest about practical feasibility of the proposed approach in wearable IoMT devices.

This proposed research explores a novel approach to image classification by deploying a complex-valued neural network (CVNN) on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), specifically for classifying 2D images transformed into polar form. The aim of this research is to address the limitations of existing neural network models in terms of energy and resource efficiency, by exploring the potential of FPGA-based hardware acceleration in conjunction with advanced neural network architectures like CVNNs. The methodological innovation of this research lies in the Cartesian to polar transformation of 2D images, effectively reducing the input data volume required for neural network processing. Subsequent efforts focused on constructing a CVNN model optimized for FPGA implementation, emphasizing the enhancement of computational efficiency and overall performance. The experimental findings provide empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of the image classification system developed in this study. One of the developed models, CVNN_128, achieves an accuracy of 88.3% with an inference time of just 1.6ms and a power consumption of 4.66mW for the classification of the MNIST test dataset consists of 10,000 frames. While there is a slight concession in accuracy compared to recent FPGA implementations that achieve 94.43%, our model significantly excels in classification speed and power efficiency—surpassing existing models by more than a factor of 100. In conclusion, the paper demonstrates the substantial advantages of FPGA-implementation of CVNNs for image classification tasks, particularly in scenarios where speed, resource, and power consumption are critical. In the realm of the five-category classification endeavor, there has been limited exploration into applied techniques for classifying Arabic text. These methods have primarily leaned on singletask learning, incorporating manually crafted features that lack robust sentence representations. Recently, the Transformer paradigm has emerged as a highly promising alternative. However, when these models are trained using single-task learning, they often face challenges in achieving outstanding performance and generating robust latent feature representations, especially when dealing with small datasets. This issue is particularly pronounced in the context of the Arabic dialect, which has a scarcity of available resources. Given these constraints, this study introduces an innovative approach to dissecting sentiment in Arabic text. This approach combines Inductive Transfer (INT) with the Transformer paradigm to augment the adaptability of the model and refine the representation of sentences. By employing self-attention SE-A and feed-forward sub-layers as a shared Transformer encoder for both the five-category and three-category Arabic text classification tasks, this proposed model adeptly discerns sentiment in Arabic dialect sentences. The empirical findings underscore the commendable performance of the proposed model, as demonstrated in assessments of the Hotel Arabic-Reviews Dataset, the Book Reviews Arabic Dataset, and the LARB dataset.

One of the most important applications in the wireless sensor networks (WSN) is to classify mobile targets in the monitoring area. In this paper, a multi-DBN weighted voting classification algorithm is proposed on the basis of the Deep Belief Network (DBN) classifier and combined with the idea of voting method, which is implemented on the nodes of the WSN monitoring system by means of "upper training, lower transplantation" appraoch. The performance of the algorithm is verified by using real-world experimental data, and the results show that the proposed method has a higher accuracy in classifying the target signal features, achieving an average classification accuracy of 84.63% across four different types of moving targets. The experiment reveals that the multi-DBN weighted voting algorithm enhances the target classification accuracy by approximately 5% in comparison to the single DBN classifier, but the memory and computation time required for the algorithm to run are also increased at the same time. Compared to the FFNN classifier, which exhibited the highest classification accuracy among the four selected methods, the algorithm achieves an improvement of approximately 8.8% in classification accuracy. However, it incurs greater time overhead to run.

For the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan (Russia), a spatial model of forest communities was built as a basis for assessing the sequestration potential of ecosystems. Combination of multi-temporal and multi-spectral satellite imagery from the Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 platform as input data and Google Earth Engine cloud platform were used. The set of 292 vegetation indices and metrics computed from the pre-processed imagery, were combined into dataset. The Weka X-Means clustering algorithm was trained and applied to study area. The unsupervised classification was carried out by vegetation classes in the Braun-Blanquet system. The results of unsupervised classification were verified using data from more than 17,000 relevés with geographic references from the Flora database. For automatic classification, the EuroVeg Checklist expert system in the JUICE 7.1 package was used. The proposed methodology for obtaining initial data and unsupervised classification, supported by an automated expert system, made it possible to obtain a picture of the vegetation distribution in the study area with sufficient accuracy, and in the future, it will be used to assess the sequestration potential of the ecosystems of the region under study.
