The use of credit cards and online banking is expanding exponentially. As more individuals use debit cards, credit cards, and internet banking, the likelihood of falling victim to various forms of fraud also rises. Due to ignorance, credit card company customers have provided their card details, personal information, and one-time password to an unknown bogus caller on several occasions in the recent past. One of the biggest issues facing financial institutions and customers alike is credit card theft. It may result in large financial losses and harm to the financial institution's image. While there are several ways to identify credit card fraud, one of the best is machine learning.By using past data, machine learning algorithms may be trained to recognize trends and abnormalities that point to fraud. The state-of-the-art in machine learning for credit card fraud detection is reviewed in this study. Numerous research on the same subject have been conducted in the past with a variety of well-known machine-learning techniques. However, with a grasp of the notion of hybrid machine learning, we will now examine how well hybrid machine learning performs on the same problem statement.

In this study, we present a novel approach to estimate the Hurst exponent of time series data using a variety of machine learning algorithms. The Hurst exponent is a crucial parameter in characterizing long-range dependence in time series, and traditional methods such as Rescaled Range (R/S) analysis and Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) have been widely used for its estimation. However, these methods have certain limitations, which we sought to address by modifying the R/S approach to distinguish between fractional Lévy and fractional Brownian motion, and by demonstrating the inadequacy of DFA and similar methods for data that resembles fractional Lévy motion. This inspired us to utilize machine learning techniques to improve the estimation process. In an unprecedented step, we train various machine learning models, including LightGBM, MLP, and AdaBoost, on synthetic data generated from random walks, namely fractional Brownian motion and fractional Lévy motion, where the ground truth Hurst exponent is known. Meaning that we can initialize and create these stochastic processes with a scaling Hurst/scaling exponent which, is then used as the ground truth for training. Furthermore, we perform the continuous estimation of the scaling exponent directly from the time series, without resorting to the calculation of the power spectrum or other sophisticated preprocessing steps, as done in past approaches. Our experiments reveal that the machine learning-based estimators outperform traditional R/S analysis and DFA methods in estimating the Hurst exponent, particularly for data akin to fractional Lévy motion. Validating our approach on real-world financial data, we observe a divergence between the estimated Hurst/scaling exponents and results reported in the literature. Nevertheless, the confirmation provided by known ground truths reinforces the superiority of our approach in terms of accuracy. This work highlights the potential of machine learning algorithms for accurately estimating the Hurst exponent, paving new paths for time series analysis. By marrying traditional finance methods with the capabilities of machine learning, our study provides a novel contribution towards the future of time series data analysis.

Within this paper, a machine learning algorithm is used to investigate the importance of certain setpoints and parameters in the filtration processes of a large-scale water treatment facility. Previously, a model for the filtration process based on Run-to-Run Control was proposed and tested against sample data from the treatment plant, but it was quickly found that such a model was incompatible for successfully computing setpoints of operation which minimize the energy cost of running the filtration systems. The machine learning model described herein is an attempt to elucidate the importance of the available data on the filtration systems and to identify the most important variables that influence the filtration run time.

In the present-day digital landscape, websites have increasingly relied on digital marketing practices, notably search engine optimization (SEO), as a vital component in promoting sustainable growth. The traffic a website receives directly determines its development and success. As such, website owners frequently engage the services of SEO experts to enhance their website's visibility and increase traffic. These specialists employ premium SEO audit tools that crawl the website's source code to identify structural changes necessary to comply with specific ranking criteria, commonly called SEO factors. Working collaboratively with developers, SEO specialists implement technical changes to the source code and await the results. The cost of purchasing premium SEO audit tools or hiring an SEO specialist typically ranges in the thousands of dollars per year. Against this backdrop, this research endeavors to provide an open-source Python-based Machine Learning SEO software tool to the general public, catering to the needs of both website owners and SEO specialists. The tool analyzes the top-ranking websites for a given search term, assessing their on-page and off-page SEO strategies, and provides recommendations to enhance a website's performance to surpass its competition. The tool yields remarkable results, boosting average daily organic traffic from 10 to 143 visitors.

Many spatial decision support systems suffer from user adoption issues in practice due to lack of trust, technical expertise, and resources. Automated machine learning has recently allowed non-experts to explore and apply machine learning models in the industry without requiring abundant expert knowledge and resources. This paper reviews recent literature from 136 papers, and proposes a general framework for integrating spatial decision support systems with automated machine learning to lower major user adoption barriers. Challenges of data quality, model interpretability, and practical usefulness were discussed as general considerations for system implementation. Research opportunities related to spatially explicit models in AutoML, and resource-aware, collaborative/connected, and human-centered systems were also discussed to address these challenges. This paper argues that integrating spatial decision support systems with automated machine learning can not only encourage user adoption, but also mutually benefit research in both fields — bridging human-related and technical advancements for fostering future developments in spatial decision support systems and automated machine learning.

Electromyographic (EMG) signals provide information about a person's muscle activity. For hand movements, in particular, the execution of each gesture involves the activation of different combinations of the forearm muscles, which generate distinct electrical patterns. Conversely, the analysis of these muscle activation patterns, represented by EMG signals, allows recognizing which gesture is being performed. In this study, we aimed to implement an automatic identification system of hand or wrist gestures based on supervised Machine Learning (ML) techniques. We trained different computational models and determined which of these showed the best capacity to identify six hand or wrist gestures and generalize between different subjects. We used an open access database containing recordings of EMG signals from 36 subjects. Among the results obtained, we highlight the performance of the Random Forest model, with an accuracy of 95.39%, and the performance of a convolutional neural network with an accuracy of 94.77%.

The ASCE-EWRI reference evapotranspiration (ETo) equation is recommended as a standardized method for reference crop ETo estimation. However, various climate data as input variables to the standardized ETo method are considered limiting factors in most cases and restrict the ETo estimation. This paper assessed the potential of different machine learning (ML) models for ETo estimation using limited meteorological data. The ML models used to estimate daily ETo included Gene Expression Programming (GEP), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multiple Linear Regression (LR), and Random Forest (RF). Three input combinations of daily maximum and minimum temperature (Tmax and Tmin), wind speed (W) with Tmax and Tmin, and solar radiation (Rs) with Tmax and Tmin were considered using meteorological data during 2003–2016 from six weather stations in the Red River Valley. To understand the performance of the applied models with the various combinations, station, and yearly based tests were assessed with local and spatial approaches. Considering the local and spatial approaches analysis, the LR and RF models illustrated the lowest rate of improvement compared to GEP and SVM. The spatial RF and SVM approaches showed the lowest and highest values of the scatter index as 0.333 and 0.457, respectively. As a result, the radiation-based combination and the RF model showed the best performance with higher accuracy for all stations either locally or spatially, and the spatial SVM and GEP illustrated the lowest performance among models and approaches.

Evaluation of road safety is a critical issue having to be conducted for successful safety management in road transport systems, whereas safety management is considered in road transportation systems as a challenging task according to the dynamic of this issue and the presence of a large number of effective parameters on road safety. Therefore, evaluation and analysis of important contributing factors affecting the number of crashes play a key role in increasing the efficiency of road safety. For this purpose, in this research work, two machine learning algorithms including the group method of data handling (GMDH)-type neural network and a combination of support vector machine (SVM) and the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) are employed for evaluating the number of vehicles involved in the accident based on the seven factors affecting transport safety including the Daylight (DL), Weekday (W), Type of accident (TA), Location (L), Speed limit (SL), Average speed (AS) and Annual average daily traffic (AADT) of rural roads of Cosenza in southern Italy. In this study, 564 data sets of rural areas were investigated and relevant effective parameters were measured. In the next stage, several models were developed to investigate the parameters affecting the safety management of road transportation for rural areas. The results obtained demonstrated that "Average speed" has the highest level and "Weekday" has the lowest level of importance in the investigated rural area. Finally, although the results of both algorithms were the same, the GOA-SVM model showed a better degree of accuracy and robustness than the GMDH model.

The quality of wine depends upon the quality of the grapes, which, in turn, are affected by different viticulture aspects and the climate during the grape-growing season. Obtaining wine professionals’ judgments of the intrinsic qualities of selected wine products is a time-consuming task. It is also expensive. Instead of waiting for the wine to be produced, it is better to have an idea of the quality before harvesting, so that wine growers and wine manufacturers can use high-quality grapes. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the use of machine learning aspects in predicting wine quality and to develop a pipeline which represents the major steps from vineyards to wine quality indices. This pipeline outputs the predicted yield, values for basic parameters of grape juice composition, values for basic parameters of the wine composition, and quality. We also found that the yield could be predicted because of input data related to the characteristics of the vineyards. Finally, through the creation of a web-based application, we have investigated the balance berry yield and wine quality. Using these tools further developed, vineyard owners should be able to predict the quality of the wine they intend to produce from their vineyards before the grapes are even harvested.

The following article analyses the relationship between the mental health index and the variables of the Environment, Social and Governance-ESG model in the Italian regions between 2004 and 2023. First of all, a static analysis is proposed aimed at identifying trends relating to mental health in the Italian regions with indication of the regional gaps. Subsequently, a clustering with k-Means algorithm is proposed. Below is a comparison of 11 machine learning algorithms for predicting the performance of the mental health index. Finally, the article offers some economic policy suggestions. The results are critically discussed in light of the scientific literature.

It is crucial to select the right machine learning classifier for image classification and face recog-nition. This study examines the effectiveness of four different face recognition classifiers - Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Neural Networks. An analysis of the Large Faces in the Wild (LFW) dataset was carried out using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Classifiers are rigorously trained and evaluated based on the extracted features. Comparison of classifier performance is an insightful way to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. Having a visual representation of the classifier's performance gives a complete understanding of its capabilities. Through the selection of the most appropriate classifier, study results contribute to advancements in image classification, recognition, and biometric identification. The comparison study demonstrated that the Neural Network classifier was exceptionally accurate and proficient in recognizing faces from the LFW dataset when used in conjunction with PCA for feature extraction. According to the comparative analysis, the Neural Network classifier proved exceptionally accurate and proficient at identifying faces from the LFW dataset when combined with PCA for feature extraction.

It is difficult to obtain necessary information accurately from Social Networking Service (SNS) while raising children, and it is thought that there is a certain demand for the development of a system that presents appropriate information to users according to the child's developmental stage. There are still few examples of research on knowledge extraction that focuses on childcare. This research aims to develop a system that extracts and presents useful knowledge for people who are actually raising children, using texts about childcare posted on Twitter. In many systems numbers in text data are just strings like words and are normalized to zero or simply ignored. In this paper, we created a set of tweet texts and a set of profiles created according to the developmental stages of infants from "0-year-old child" to "6-year-old child". For each set, we used ML algorithms such as NB (Naive Bayes), LR (Logistic Regression), ANN (Approximate Nearest Neighbor algorithms search), XGboost, RF (random forest), decision trees, and SVM (Support Vector Machine) to compare with BERT, a neural language model, to construct a classification model that predicts numbers from "0" to "6" from sentences. The accuracy rate predicted by the BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) classifier was slightly higher than that of the NB, LR, ANN, XGboost, RF, decision trees, and SVM classifiers, indicating that the BERT classification method was better.

Porous materials can be characterized by well-trained neural networks. In this study, fibrous paper-type gas diffusion layers were trained with artificial data created by a stochastic geometry model. The features of the data were calculated by means of transport simulations using the Lattice–Boltzmann method based on stochastic micro-structures. A convolutional neural network was developed that can predict the permeability and tortuosity of the material, through-plane and in-plane. The characteristics of real data, both uncompressed and compressed, were predicted. The data was represented by reconstructed images of different sizes and image resolutions. Image artifacts are also a source of potential errors in the prediction. The Kozeny–Carman trend was used to evaluate the prediction of permeability and tortuosity of compressed real data. Using this method, it was possible to decide if the predictions on compressed data were appropriate.

Background: Machine learning has revolutionized situational awareness during disaster management by classifying, clustering, and predicting impacted locations and people. Despite its importance, no review has been conducted on machine learning tools for food assistance efforts during emergency or non-emergency situations. The purpose of this scoping review is to address that gap. Methods: Keywords were defined within the concepts of food assistance and machine learning. After the database searches, PRISMA guidelines were followed to perform a partnered, two-round scoping literature review. Text mining and Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling algorithms were used to determine trends. Results: 28 articles met criteria and were included in the analysis. The types of study designs included: model development (42.9%), non-study (i.e., text and opinion) (28.6%), qualitative research (14.3%), case study (10.7%), and meta-analysis (3.6%). There were no quantitative studies. The machine learning tools’ main functions were improving SNAP programs (32.1%), detecting needs and resources (25%), predicting food insecurity (21.4%), and situational awareness of current food insecurity issues (21.4%). None of these studies took place during a disaster or explicitly addressed emergency mitigation, preparedness, or recovery. All of the studies were in early phases of development and implementation. Conclusion: Machine learning tools for improving situational awareness, resource allocation, policymaking, and prediction have the potential to improve food assistance, but there is a lack of implementation and evaluation during all disaster phases. Also needed is more formative work on generating food-related queries and defining variables and features of food security.

Transfer learning has proven to be a valuable technique for deploying machine learning models on edge devices and embedded systems. By leveraging pre-trained models and fine-tuning them on specific tasks, practitioners can effectively adapt existing models to the constraints and requirements of their application. In the process of adapting an existing model, a practitioner may make adjustments to the model architecture, including the input layers, output layers, and intermediate layers. In this study, we examine the effects of these adjustments on the runtime and energy performance of an edge processor performing inferences. Based on our observations, we make recommendations for how to adjust convolutional neural networks during transfer learning to maintain runtime performance. We observe that the Edge TPU is generally more efficient than a CPU at performing inferences on convolutional neural networks, and continues to outperform a CPU as the depth and width of the convolutional network increases. We explore multiple strategies for adjusting the input and output layers of an existing model and demonstrate important performance cliffs for practitioners to consider when modifying a convolutional neural network model.

Machine learning (ML) is growing in popularity for various particle accelerator applications including anomaly detection such as faulty beam position monitor or RF fault identification, for non-invasive diagnostics, and for creating surrogate models. ML methods such as neural networks (NN) are useful because they can learn input-output relationships in large complex systems based on large data sets. Once they are trained, methods such as NNs give instant predictions of complex phenomenon, which makes their use as surrogate models especially appealing for speeding up large parameter space searches which otherwise require computationally expensive simulations. However, quickly time varying systems are challenging for ML-based approaches because the actual system dynamics quickly drifts away from the description provided by any fixed data set, degrading the predictive power of any ML method, and limits their applicability for real time feedback control of quickly time-varying accelerator components and beams. In contrast to ML methods, adaptive model-independent feedback algorithms are by design robust to un-modeled changes and disturbances in dynamic systems, but are usually local in nature and susceptible to local extrema. In this work, we propose that the combination of adaptive feedback and machine learning, adaptive machine learning (AML), is a way to combine the global feature learning power of ML methods such as deep neural networks with the robustness of model-independent control. We present an overview of several ML and adaptive control methods, their strengths and limitations, and an overview of AML approaches. Lymphoma diagnoses in the U.S. are substantial, with an estimated 89,380 new cases in 2023, necessitating innovative treatment approaches. Phase 1 clinical trials play a pivotal role in this context. We developed a binary predictive model to assess trial adherence to expected average durations, analyzing 1,089 completed Phase 1 lymphoma trials from clinicaltrials.gov. Using machine learning, the Random Forest model demonstrated high efficacy with an accuracy of 0.7248 and ROC-AUC of 0.7701 for lymphoma trials. Importantly, this model maintained an accuracy of 0.7405 when applied to lung cancer trials, showcasing its versatility. A key insight is the correlation between higher predicted probabilities and extended trial durations, offering nuanced insights beyond binary predictions. Our research contributes to enhanced clinical research planning and potential improvements in patient outcomes in oncology.

Big data technologies are disruptive technologies that affect every business, including those in the construction industry. The Thai government has also been affected, and attempted to use machine learning techniques with the analytics of big data technologies to predict which construction projects have a winning price over the project budget. However, this technology was never developed, and the government did not implement it because they had data obtained via a traditional data collection process. In this study, traditional data were processed to predict behavior in Thai government construction projects using a machine learning model. The data were collected from the government procurement system in 2019. There were seven input data, including project owner department, type of construction project, bidding method, project duration, project level, winning price over estimated price, and winning price over budget. A range of classification techniques, including an artificial neural network (ANN), a decision tree (DC), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN), were used in this study (ANN). According to the results, after hyperparameter tuning, ANN had the greatest prediction accuracy with 78.9 percent. This study confirms that data from the Thai government procurement system can be investigated using machine learning techniques from big data technologies.

Cloud computing has revolutionized how industries store, process, and access data. However, the increasing adoption of cloud technology has also raised concerns regarding data security. Machine learning (ML) is a promising technique to enhance cloud computing security. This paper focuses on utilizing ML techniques (Support Vector Machine, XGBoost, and Artificial Neural Networks) to progress cloud computing security in the industry. The selection of 11 important features for the ML study satisfies the study's objectives. This study focused on identifying gaps in utilizing ML techniques in cloud cyber security. Moreover. this study aims at developing a practical strategy for predicting the employment of machine learning in an Industrial Cloud environment regarding trust and privacy issues. The efficiency of the employed models is assessed by applying validation matrices of Precision, Accuracy, Recall values, F1 score, R.O.C. curves, and Confusion matrix. The results demonstrated that the X.G.B. model outperformed in terms of all the matrices with an Accuracy of 97.50 %, 97.60 % Precision, 97.60 % Recall values, and 97.50 % F1 score. This research highlights the potential of ML algorithms in enhancing cloud computing security for industries. It emphasizes the need for continued research and development to create more advanced and efficient security solutions for cloud computing.

Count data analysis presents unique challenges due to its discrete nature, often exhibiting excessive zeros and overdispersion. To address these complexities, count models, such as Poisson regression and Negative Binomial regression, have been developed, enabling modeling and prediction of count-based phenomena. Additionally, it’s important to notice that zero inflation, a phenomenon commonly observed in count data, requires specialized techniques for robust analysis. This article provides an overview of count data and count models, explores zero inflation, introduces Likelihood Ratio Tests, and explains how the Vuong Test can be used as a model selection criteria. Furthermore, we created a Vuong Test implementation from scratch using the Python programming language. This implementation enhances the accessibility and applicability of the Vuong Test in real-world scenarios, providing a valuable contribution to the academic community, since Python didn’t have an implementation of this statistical test.

Age estimation in dental radiographs Orthopantomography (OPG) is a medical imaging technique that physicians and pathologists utilise for disease identification and legal matters. For example, for estimating post-mortem interval, detecting child abuse, drug trafficking, and identifying an unknown body. Recent development in automated image processing models improved the age estimation's limited precision to an approximate range of +/- one year. While this estimation is often accepted as accurate measurement, age estimation should be as precise as possible in most serious matters, such as homicide. Current age estimation techniques are highly dependent on manual and time-consuming image processing. Age estimation is often a time-sensitive matter in which the image processing time is vital. Recent development in Machine learning-based data processing methods has decreased the imaging time processing; however, the accuracy of these techniques remains to be further improved. We proposed an ensemble method of image classifiers and transfer learning techniques to enhance the accuracy of age estimation using OPGs from one year to a couple of months (1-3-6). This hybrid model is based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and K nearest neighbours (KNN). The hybrid (HCNN-KNN) model was used to investigate 1,922 panoramic dental radiographs of patients aged 15 to 23. These OPGs were obtained from the various teaching institutes and private dental clinics in Malaysia. To minimise the chance of overfitting in our model, we used the principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm and eliminated the features with high correlation. To further enhance the performance of our hybrid model, we performed systematic image pre-processing. We applied a series of classifications to train our model. We have successfully demonstrated that combining these innovative approaches has improved the classification and segmentation and thus the age-estimation outcome of the model. Our findings suggest that our innovative model, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, successfully estimated the age in classified studies of one year old, six months, three months and one-month-old cases with accuracies of 99.98, 99.96, 99.87, and 98.78 respectively.

In this report, we present a study demonstrating how machine learning methods can reveal the interaction of different risk factors of post-transplant leukemic relapse and obtain robust predictions even with a modest clinical dataset. Using a cohort of 63 pediatric patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and 46 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who underwent stem cell transplant at a single institution, we built predictive models of leukemic relapse with both pretransplant and posttransplant patient variables (specifically lineage-specific chimerism) using the random forest classifier. The random forest classifier revealed different important predictive factors between ALL and AML in our relapse models consistent with previous knowledge. Furthermore, it also distinguished donor CD34 chimerism as most impactful in relapse prediction compare to donor chimerism of other cellular lineages in our dataset for ALL but CD3 for AML. Our models greatly improved sensitivity and specificity at predicting relapses in cross validation compared to a reference model based on our own institutional incidence of relapse and inferential statistical principles. Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations, an interpretable machine learning tool, confirmed our Random Forest Classification result and provided an intuitive explanation of how our machine learning models made the relapse prediction for each individual patient.

Researchers are always looking to find ways to use energy more efficiently while keeping people comfortable at home. They've tried different methods like fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms to do this. In this paper, we introduce a novel model that combines different techniques like data smoothing, optimization, machine learning, and control algorithms to reach this goal in smart homes. The proposed model is made up of three main parts: smoothing, optimization, and control. The smoothing part uses the Kalman filter to get rid of any unnecessary noise and make sure the data used to predict energy use is clean and smooth. The optimization part uses both genetic with firefly algorithms and artificial neural networks to minimize the gap between the actual environmental conditions and the conditions users find comfortable. It adjusts the comfort settings in real-time using machine learning. The control part uses Mamdani fuzzy logic to make sure energy is delivered in the best way possible to the systems that control temperature, lighting, etc., making the home comfortable and saving energy at the same time. Comparative analyses demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model over existing algorithms, including the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Additionally, the paper discusses the importance of adaptive controllers in addressing issues associated with incorrect PID controller selection and highlights the benefits of using the FA-GA in energy optimization and comfort improvement. Overall, the proposed model offers an effective solution for efficient energy consumption optimization and enhanced user comfort in diverse settings through the integration of advanced algorithms and optimization modules.

This paper explores the application of various machine learning techniques for predicting customer churn in the telecommunications sector. We utilized a publicly accessible dataset and implemented several models, including Artificial Neural Networks, Decision Trees, Support Vector Machines, Random Forests, Logistic Regression, and gradient boosting techniques (XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost). To mitigate the challenges posed by imbalanced datasets, we adopted different data sampling strategies, namely SMOTE, SMOTE combined with Tomek Links, and SMOTE combined with Edited Nearest Neighbors. Moreover, hyperparameter tuning was employed to enhance model performance. Our evaluation employed standard metrics such as Precision, Recall, F1-Score, and the Receiver Operating Characteristic Area Under Curve (ROC AUC). Regarding the F1-Score metric, CatBoost demonstrates superior performance compared to other machine learning models, achieving an outstanding 93% following the application of Optuna hyperparameter optimization. In the context of the ROC AUC metric, both XGBoost and CatBoost exhibit exceptional performance, recording remarkable scores of 91%. This achievement for XGBoost is attained after implementing a combination of SMOTE with Tomek Links, while CatBoost reaches this level of performance after the application of Optuna hyperparameter optimization.

By 2024, artificial intelligence (AI) will have had a revolutionary impact on cyber security, putting the sector at a critical turning point. This article explores the significant influence AI has had on cyber security procedures, outlining the progress made as well as the difficulties faced. artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed threat detection and response systems, allowing for proactive security tactics against a constantly changing array of cyber threats. By utilizing neural networks and machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI) systems can predict possible security breaches, detect unusual trends, and automatically reduce risks in real-time. These capabilities are unparalleled. Nevertheless, despite these impressive advancements, worries about data privacy, adversarial attacks, and ethical ramifications remain significant. Moreover, the never-ending game of cat and mouse between cyber attackers and defenders continues, requiring constant innovation and adaptability in cyber security strategies driven by Artificial Intelligence. In addition to providing insights into its implications for protecting digital assets and bolstering resilience against cyber threats in the changing cyber security scenario of 2024, this paper summarizes the current state of the artificial intelligence revolution in cyber security.

This research project aimed to address the growing concern about methane emissions from seaweed by developing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model capable of accurately predicting these emissions. The study used PANDAS to read and analyze the dataset, incorporating statistical measures like mean, median, and standard deviation to understand the dataset. The CNN model was trained using the ReLU activation function and mean absolute error as the loss function. Model performance was evaluated through MAPE graphs, comparing the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) between training and validation sets and between true and predicted emissions, and analyzing trends in yearly greenhouse gas emissions. The results demonstrated that the CNN model achieved a high level of accuracy in predicting methane emissions, with a low MAPE between the expected and actual values. This approach should enhance our understanding of methane emissions from Sargassum, contributing to more accurate environmental impact assessments and effective mitigation strategies.

Landslides, resulting from disturbances in slope equilibrium, pose a significant threat to landscapes, infrastructure, and human life. Triggered by factors such as intense precipitation, seismic activities, or volcanic eruptions, these events can cause extensive damage and endanger nearby communities. A comprehensive understanding of landslide characteristics, including spatio-temporal patterns, dimensions, and morphology, is vital for effective landslide-disaster management. Existing Remote Sensing approaches mostly use either optical or Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors. Integrating information from both these types of sensors promises greater accuracy for identifying and locating landslides. This study proposes a novel approach, the ML-LaDeCORsat (Machine Learning-based coseismic Landslide Detection using Combined Optical and Radar Satellite Imagery), that integrates freely available Sentinel-1, Palsar-2, and Sentinel-2 imagery data, along with relevant spectral indices and suitable bands using machine-learning-based classification for coseismic landslide detection implemented in Google Earth Engine (GEE). The approach includes a robust and reproducible training and validation strategy. Using landslides from four different earthquake case studies, we demonstrate the superiority of our approach over existing solutions in coseismic landslide iden-tification and localization, providing a detection accuracy of 87-92%. ML-LaDeCORsat can be adapted to other landslide events (GEE script is provided). Transfer learning experiments proofed that our model can be applied to other coseismic landslide events without the need for additional training data. Our novel approach therefore facilitates quick and reliable identification of co-seismic landslides, highlighting its potential to contribute towards more effective disaster management.

The visual perception of leisure spaces between residences in cold regions is important for public health. To compensate for the existing researches` lack of ignoring the cold snow season`s influence, this study selected two types of outdoor leisure space environments in non-snow and snow seasons as research objects. An eye tracker combined with a Semantic Difference (SD) questionnaire was used to verify the feasibility of the application of virtual reality technology, screen out leisure gaze characteristics, and reveal the environmental factors related to leisure visual perception. In snow season, spatial aspect ratio (SAR), building elevation saturation (BS), and grass proportion in the field of view (GP) showed strong correlation to the leisure visual perception scores (W). In non-snow season, apart from the above three factors, roof height difference (RHD), tall tree height (TTH) and color contrast (HC) also influenced W obviously. The effects of factors on W were revealed in immersive virtual en-vironment (IVE) orthogonal experiments and genetic algorithm (GA) and k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN) were combined to optimized the environmental factors. The optimized threshold ranges in the non-snow season environment were SAR: 1.82‒2.15, RHD: 10.81 m‒20.09 m, BS: 48.53‒61.01, TTH: 14.18 m‒18.29 m, GP: 0.12‒0.15, and HC: 18.64‒26.83. In the snow season environment, the optimized threshold ranges were SAR: 2.22‒2.54, BS: 68.47‒82.34, and GP: 0.1‒0.14.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is an attractive technology for manufacturing industry due to flexibility in design and functionality, but inconsistency in quality is one of the major limitations that does not allow utilizing this technology for production of end-use parts. Prediction of mechanical properties can be one of the possible ways to improve the repeatability of the results. The part placement, part orientation, and STL model properties (number of mesh triangles, surface, and volume) are used to predict tensile modulus, nominal stress and elongation at break for polyamide 2200 (also known as PA12). EOS P395 polymer powder bed fusion system was used to fabricate 217 specimens in two identical builds (434 specimens in total). Prediction is performed for XYZ, XZY, ZYX, and Angle orientations separately, and all orientations together. The different non-linear models based on machine learning methods have higher prediction accuracy compared with linear regression models. Linear regression models have prediction accuracy higher than 80% only for Tensile Modulus and Elongation at break in Angle orientation. Since orientation-based modeling has low prediction accuracy due to a small number of data points and lack of information about material properties, these models need to be improved in the future based on additional experimental work.

Human often cross their legs unconsciously while sitting, which can lead to issues like shifting the center of gravity, lower back pain, decreased blood flow and pelvic distortion. Detecting unconscious leg-crossing is important for maintaining correct posture. In this study, we explored the detection of leg-crossing postures using machine learning on data from body pressure distribution sensors. Collected 180 seconds of pressure data from 4 male subjects (25.8 ± 6.29 y.o.) in three conditions: no leg crossing, right leg crossed, and left leg crossed. Seven classifiers, including SVM and RF, were evaluated using Accuracy, Recall, Precision, and Specificity. As a result, SVM was difficult to classify.

Efficient classification of body position is crucial for monitoring infants’ motor development. It may fast-track the early detection of developmental issues related not only to the acquisition of motor milestones but also to postural stability and movement patterns. In turn, this may facilitate and enhance opportunities for early intervention that are crucial for promoting healthy growth and development. Manual classification of human body position based on video recordings is labour-intensive, leading to the adoption of Inertial Motion Unit (IMU) sensors. IMUs measure acceleration, angular velocity, and magnetic field intensity, enabling automated classification of body position. Many research teams are currently employing supervised machine learning classifiers that utilise hand-crafted features for data segment classification. In this study, we used a longitudinal dataset of IMU recordings made in the lab in three different play activities of infants aged 4-12 months. The classification was conducted based on manually annotated video recordings. We found superior performance of the CatBoost Classifier over the Random Forest Classifier in the task of classifying five positions based on IMU sensor data from infants, yielding excellent classification accuracy of Supine (97.7%), Sitting (93.5%) and Prone (89.9%) position. Moreover, using data ablation experiments and analysing the SHAP values, the study assessed the importance of various groups of features from both time and frequency domains. The results highlight that both accelerometer and magnetometer data, especially their statistical characteristics, are critical contributors to improving the accuracy of body position classification.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry allows the generation of orthophoto and digital surface model (DSM) rasters of a terrain. However, DSMs of water bodies mapped using this technique often reveal distortions in the water surface, thereby impeding the accurate sampling of water surface elevation (WSE) from DSMs. This study investigates the capability of deep neural networks to accommodate the aforementioned perturbations and effectively estimate WSE from photogrammetric rasters. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were employed for this purpose. Two regression approaches utilizing CNNs were explored: direct regression employing an encoder and solution based on prediction of the weight mask by an encoder-decoder architecture, subse-quently used to sample values from the photogrammetric DSM. The dataset employed in this study comprises data collected from five case studies of small lowland streams in Poland and Denmark, consisting of 322 DSM and orthophoto raster samples. Each sample corresponds to a 10 by 10 meter area of the stream channel and adjacent land. A grid search was employed to identify the optimal combination of encoder, mask generation architecture, and batch size among multiple candidates. Solutions were evaluated using two cross-validation methods: stratified k-fold cross-validation, where validation subsets maintained the same proportion of samples from all case studies, and leave-one-case-out cross-validation, where the validation dataset originates entirely from a single case study, and the training set consists of samples from other case studies. The proposed solution was compared with existing methods for measuring WSE in small streams using a drone. The results indicate that the solution outperforms previous photogrammetry-based methods and is second only to the radar-based method, which is considered the most accurate method available. The solution is characterized by a high degree of explainability and generalization.

In response to the growing challenges in drone security and airspace management, this study introduces an advanced drone classifier, capable of detecting and categorizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) based on acoustic signatures. Utilizing a comprehensive database of drone sounds across EU-defined classes (C0 to C3), this research leverages machine learning (ML) techniques for effective UAV identification. The study primarily focuses on the impact of data augmentation methods—pitch shifting, time delays, harmonic distortion, and ambient noise integration—on classifier performance. These techniques aim to mimic real-world acoustic variations, thus enhancing the classifier's robustness and practical applicability. Results indicate that moderate levels of augmentation significantly improve classification accuracy. However, excessive application of these methods can negatively affect performance. The study concludes that sophisticated acoustic data augmentation can substantially enhance ML-driven drone detection, providing a versatile and efficient tool for managing drone-related security risks. This research contributes to UAV detection technology, presenting a model that not only identifies but also categorizes drones, underscoring its potential for diverse operational environments.

Predicting nurse turnover is a growing challenge within the healthcare sector, profoundly impacting healthcare quality and the nursing profession. This study employs the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to address class imbalance issues in the 2018 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN) dataset and predict nurse turnover using machine learning (ML) algorithms. Four ML algorithms, namely logistic regression (LR), random forests (RF), decision tree (DT), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), are applied to the SMOTE-enhanced dataset. The data is randomly split into an 80% training set and a 20% validation set. Eighteen carefully selected variables from the NSSRN database serve as predictive features, and the machine learning model identifies feature importance concerning nurse turnover. The study includes a performance comparison based on metrics such as Accuracy, Precision, Recall (Sensitivity), F1-score, and AUC. In summary, the results demonstrate that SMOTE-enhanced random forests (SMOTE_RT) exhibit the most robust predictive power, both in the classical approach (with all 18 predictive variables) and an optimized approach (utilizing eight key predictive variables). XGBoost, decision tree, and logistic regression follow in performance. Notably, age emerges as the most influential factor in nurse turnover, with working hours, EHR/EMR usability, individual income, and region also playing significant roles. This research offers valuable insights for healthcare researchers and stakeholders, aiding in selecting suitable ML algorithms for nurse turnover prediction.

Neutral facial expression recognition is of great importance in various domains and applications. This study introduces a data-centric approach for neutral facial expression recognition, presenting a comprehensive study that explores different methodologies, techniques, and challenges in the field to foster a deeper understanding. The results show that data augmentation plays a crucial role in improving dataset performance. Additionally, the study investigates different model architectures and training techniques to identify the most effective approach, with the InceptionV3 model achieving the highest accuracy of 72%. Furthermore, the research examines the influence of preprocessing methods on the performance of both InceptionV3 and a simplified CNN model. Interestingly, the results indicate that preprocessing techniques positively affect the performance of the simpler CNN model but negatively impact the InceptionV3 model. The implemented system, used to evaluate the findings, demonstrates promising results, correctly classifying 77% of neutral expressions. However, there are still areas for improvement. Creating a specialized dataset that includes both neutral and non-neutral expressions would greatly enhance the accuracy of the system. By addressing limitations and implementing suggested improvements, neutral facial expression recognition can be significantly enhanced, leading to more effective and accurate results.

Machine Learning techniques can be used to identify whether deficits in cognitive functions contribute to antisocial and aggressive behavior. This paper initially presents the results of tests conducted on delinquent and non-delinquent youths to assess their cognitive functions. The dataset extracted from these assessments, consisting of 37 predictor variables and one target. was used to train three algorithms that aim to predict whether the data corresponds to that of a young offender or a non-offending youth. Prior to this, statistical tests were conducted on the data to identify characteristics that exhibited significant differences in order to select the most relevant features and optimize the prediction results. Additionally, other feature selection methods, such as Boruta, RFE, and Filter, were applied, and their effects on the accuracy of each of the three machine learning models used (SVM, RF, and KNN) were compared. 80% of the data were utilized for training, while the remaining 20% were used for validation. The best result was achieved by the K-NN model trained with 19 features selected by the Boruta method, followed by the SVM model trained with 24 features selected by the filter method.

Wet granulation is a frequent process in the pharmaceutical industry. As a starting point for numerous dosage forms, the quality of the granulation not only affects subsequent production steps but also impacts the quality of the final product. It is thus crucial and economical to monitor this operation thoroughly. Here, we report on identifying different phases of a granulation process using a machine learning approach. The phases reflect the water content which in turn influences the processability and quality of the granule mass. We used two kinds of microphones and an acceleration sensor to capture acoustic emissions and vibrations. We trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify the different phases using transformed sound recordings as the input. We achieved a classification accuracy of up to 90 % using vibrational data and an accuracy of up to 97 % using the audible microphone data. Our results indicate the suitability of using audible sound and machine learning to monitor pharmaceutical processes. Moreover, since recording acoustic emissions is contactless, it readily complies with legal regulations and present Good Manufacturing Practices.

The communication link between the base station and the mobile sensor networks, such as multi-agent systems for collaborative tasks which include ground mobile robots and drones, is crucial for localization and success of tasks in indoor environments. The Power-domain Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (P-NOMA) is an emerging multiplexing technique that enables the base station to accumulate signals for different agents using the same time-frequency channel. The environment information such as distance from the base station is required at the base station to calculate communication channel gains and allocate suitable signal power to each agent. The accurate estimate of the position for power allocation of P-NOMA in a dynamic environment is challenging due to changing location of the end-agent and shadowing. In this paper, we take advantage of the two-way Visible Light Communication (VLC) link to: (1) estimate the position of the end-agent in a real-time indoor environment based on the signal power received at the base station and (2) allocate resources using the Simplified Gain Ratio Power Allocation (S-GRPA) scheme with the look-up table method. In addition, we use the Euclidean Distance Matrix (EDM) to estimate the location of the end-agent whose signal was lost due to shadowing.

This paper offers a comprehensive examination of the process involved in developing and automating supervised end-to-end machine learning workflows for forecasting and classification purposes. It offers a complete overview of the components (i.e. feature engineering, model selection, etc), principles (i.e. bias-variance decomposition, model complexity, overfitting, model sensitivity to feature assumptions and scaling, output interpretability, etc), models (i.e. neural networks, regression models, etc), methods (i.e. Cross-Validation, data augmentation, etc), metrics (i.e. Mean Squared Error, F1-score, etc) and tools that rule most supervised learning applications with numerical and categorical data, as well as their integration, automation, and deployment. The end goal and contribution of this paper is the education and guidance of the non-AI expert academic community over complete and rigorous machine learning pipelines and data science practices, from problem scoping to design and state-of-the-art automation tools, including basic principles and reasoning in the choice of methods. The paper delves into the critical stages of supervised machine learning workflow development, many of which are often omitted by researchers due to brevity, and covers foundational concepts essential for understanding and optimizing a functional machine learning workflow, thereby offering a holistic view of task-specific application development for applied researchers who are not AI experts.

Inland waters pose a unique challenge for water quality monitoring by remote sensing techniques due to their complicated spectral features and small-scale variability. At the same time, collecting the high-quality reference data needed to calibrate remote sensing data products is both time consuming and expensive. In this study, we present the further development of a robotic team composed of an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) providing in situ reference measurements and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a hyperspectral imager. Together, this team is able to address the limitations of existing approaches by enabling the simultaneous collection of comprehensive in situ data together with high-resolution hyperspectral imagery. We showcase the capabilities of this team using data collected in a north Texas pond during three collections in the fall of 2020. Machine learning models for 13 variables are trained using the data set of paired in situ measurements and coincident reflectance spectra. These models can successfully estimate physical variables, including temperature, conductivity, pH, and turbidity, as well as the concentrations of blue-green algae, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), chlorophyll-a, crude oil, optical brighteners and the ions Ca2+, Cl−, and Na+. We extend the training procedure to utilize conformal prediction to estimate 90% confidence intervals for the output of each trained model. The maps generated by applying each trained model to the collected images reveal the small-scale spatial variability within the pond. Additionally, the permutation importance computed for each feature of the trained models highlights the spectral features relevant to each water quality variable.

The lunar calendar is often overlooked in time series data modelling, despite its importance in understanding seasonal patterns as well as economic, natural phenomena, and consumer behavior. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the lunar calendar in modelling and forecasting rainfall levels using various machine learning methods. The methods employed included Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) models to test the accuracy of rainfall forecasts based on the lunar calendar compared to those based on the Gregorian calendar. The results indicated that machine learning models incorporating the lunar calendar generally pro-vided greater accuracy in forecasting for periods of 3, 4, 6, and 12 months compared to models using the Gregorian calendar. These findings contributed to the advancement of forecasting techniques, machine learning, and the adaptation to non-Gregorian calendar systems, while also opening new opportunities for further research into lunar calendar applications across various domains.

The advancements in social networking have empowered open expression on micro blogging platforms like Twitter. Traditional Twitter Sentiment Analysis (TSA) faced challenges due to rule-based or dictionary algorithms, dealing with feature selection, ambiguity, sparse data, and language variations. This study proposed a classification framework for Twitter sentiment data using word count vectorization and machine learning techniques to reduce the difficulties addressed on annotated sentiment-labelled tweets. Various classifiers (Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, K Nearest Neighbours, Logistic Regression, and Random Forest) were evaluated based on Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1-score, and Specificity. Random Forest outperformed others with an Area under Curve (AUC) value of 0.96, and an Average Precision (AP) score of 0.96 in sentiment classification, especially effective with minimal Twitter-specific features.

In this paper, solar irradiance and wind speed forecasts were performed considering time horizons ranging from 10 min to 60 min, under a 10 min time-step. Global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and wind speed were computed using four forecasting models (Random Forest, k-Nearest Neighbours, Support Vector Regression, and Elastic Net) to compare their performance against two alternative dynamic ensemble methods (windowing and arbitrating). Forecasting models and dynamic forecasting ensembles were implemented in Python for performance evaluation. The performance comparison between the prediction models and the dynamic ensemble methods was carried out by evaluating the RMSE, MAE, R² and MAPE, to evaluate whether the dynamic ensemble forecasting method obtained greater. According to the results obtained windowing dynamic ensemble method was the most efficient among the tested. For the wind speed data, by varying its parameter λ (from 1 to 100), a variable performance profile was obtained, where from λ =1 to λ = 74, windowing proved to be the most efficient, reaching maximum efficiency for λ = 19. Windowing was the best method for the GHI analysis, reaching its best performance for λ = 1. The efficiency gain using windowing was 0.56% when using the wind speed model and 1.96% for GHI.

Olive Anthracnose (OA) is the most important fungal disease of olive fruits worldwide. In the context of integrated pest management, the development of predictive models could be used for early diagnosis and control. In the current study, a dataset representing 58 cases (6 locations with 12 olive cultivars) was used to study the relationship between ΟΑ incidence (OAI) and 35 heterogeneous variables, including orchard characteristics, olive fruit parameters, foliar and soil nutrients, soil parameters and soil texture classes. The Random Forest-Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross Validation (RF-RFECV) feature selection method identified Location, Water Content, P, Ca, Mg, Exchangeable Mg, Trace Zn, Trace Cu as possible new indicators associated with OAI. Six different classification algorithms, namely Decision Tree (DT), Gradient Boosting (GB), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), were developed for predicting conditions leading to OAI >0% and 10%. Hyperparameter optimization using grid search was used to optimize the parameters of the models and finally the best parameters were applied to predict the OAI. The final models were evaluated in terms of several standard metrics, such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and ROC AUC score. Findings suggested that GB performance was superior compared to the other models for the prediction of the occurrence of OA disease (OAI>0%) with an accuracy of 86.7%, a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 75% and a ROC-AUC score of 93%, while for the prediction of the spread of the disease (OAI>10%), DT stood out with an accuracy of 86.7%, a sensitivity of 81.8%, a specificity of 100% and a ROC-AUC score of 91%. RF classifier performed very well in both cases, with an accuracy of 80%, a sensitivity of 85.7%, a specificity of 75% and a ROC-AUC score of 93% for the prediction of the occurrence of the disease (OAI>0%), and an accuracy of 86.7%, a sensitivity of 90.9%, a specificity of 75% and a ROC-AUC score of 84% for the prediction of the spread of the disease (OAI>10%).

Real estate market analysis and place-based decision-making can both benefit from understanding house price development. Although considerable amounts of interest have been devoted to housing price modelling, the assessment of house price fluctuation still requires further comparing studies. Housing price prediction is challenging as contributing factors are quite dynamic and subject to a variety of regulating elements. The future understanding of the housing market trends not only provides sufficient customers’ investment trust potential but also enables the financial support to progress more realistic in advance. In this study, a comprehensive data-informed framework is developed to investigate and anticipate real estate house prices using historical data by combining explanatory features. We examined about 500 houses in the Boston area as a case study and discussed how the increase in housing prices could vary by each of the contributing components. Fourteen Machine Learning (ML) regressors imply to the dataset and lead to a comparative study of the accuracy of all the models. ML-based regressors forecast real estate home prices as a function of thirteen influencing factors. The most informative features were also selected by conducting the Permutation Feature Importance technique on all the features The study provides a comprehensive tool for evaluating the robustness and efficiency of ML models for housing price predictions. The results highlighted Random Forest as the best model has an R2 equals to 0.88 and Voting Regressor as the second highest rated model has R2 equals to 0.87. Results of multivariate exploratory data analysis also implied that the average number of rooms and percentage of the lower status of the population have the most significant impact on the price range predictions.

The forecast of electricity demand has been a recurrent research topic for decades, due to its economical and strategic relevance. Several Machine Learning (ML) techniques have evolved in parallel with the complexity of the electric grid. This paper reviews a wide selection of approaches that have used Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to forecast electricity demand, aiming to help newcomers and experienced researchers to appraise the common practices and to detect areas where there is room for improvement in the face of the current widespread deployment of smart meters and sensors, which yields an unprecedented amount of data to work with. The review looks at the specific problems tackled by each one of the selected papers, at the results attained by their algorithms, and at the strategies followed to validate and compare the results. This way, it is possible to highlight some peculiarities and algorithm configurations that seem to consistently outperform others in specific settings.

Currently, the Bangladeshi financial sector is undergoing significant transformations. With the expansion of the infrastructure and the increasing prevalence of digital banking services, it is essential to take measures to prevent cyberattacks. These threats can be effectively mitigated through the utilization of deep learning and machine learning techniques. Through the analysis of massive amounts of banking data in real-time, these methods make it possible to detect and prevent malicious software, fraud, and security breaches that are proactive. Because the government is actively pushing for financial inclusion and digitalization, strong cybersecurity measures are more important than they have ever been. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the application of deep learning and machine learning to improve the cybersecurity environment of Bangladesh’s banking sector in light of the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of death in the United States in women. 1 in 8 women in their lifetime has a risk of developing breast cancer. With advances in omics technology, more data is available for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The help of Machine Learning algorithms, a subdomain of Artificial Intelligence, would allow for a better clinical support tool. Machine Learning could be the key to answering a complex problem in BC. The methodology of this research question involves collecting and finding data such as RNA-Seq datasets, selecting and training appropriate machine learning algorithms, and evaluating the performance of the algorithms in predicting BC prognosis. Also, the study explores and tries to identify the most relevant genes and pathways through feature selection extraction and dimensionality reduction techniques. After applying feature extraction, the top 10 genes were extracted using the Univariate Feature Selection (UFS) method, precisely the SelectKBest technique. After employing different machine learning algorithms, such as Networks, Random Forest, Linear SVM, Logistic Regression, and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), we found QDA was the best model in classifying the RNA-seq dataset with a 96% accuracy rate and 94% ROC AUC. This study suggests that AK2 and CD68 have a positive correlation with each other, and it could potentially be a biomarker and therapeutic target for BC.

(1) Background: Colon polyps are common protrusions in the colon’s lumen with potential risks of developing colorectal cancer. Early detection and intervention of these polyps are vital for reducing colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates. This research aims to evaluate and compare the performance of three machine-learning image classification models’ performance in detecting and classifying colon polyps. (2) Methods: The performance of three machine learning image classification models, Google Teachable Machine (GTM), Roboflow3 (RF3), and You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOV8), in the detection and classification of colon polyps were evaluated. The study used a dataset of colonoscopy images of normal colon, polyps, and resected polyps. The study assessed the models’ ability to correctly classify the images into their respective classes using precision, recall, and F1 score generated from confusion matrix analysis and performance graphs. (3) Results: All three models successfully distinguished between normal colon, polyps, and resected polyps in colonoscopy images. GTM achieved the highest accuracies: 0.99, with consistent precision, recall, and F1 scores of 1.00 for the `normal’ class, 0.97 - 1.00 for `polyps,’ and 0.97 - 1.00 for `resected polyps.’ While GTM exclusively classified images into these three categories, both YOLOV8 and RF3 extended their capabilities to detect normal colonic tissue, polyps, and resected polyps, with YOLOV8 and RF3 achieving overall accuracies of 0.84 and 0.87, respectively. (4) Conclusions: Machine learning, particularly models like GTM, shows promising results in ensuring comprehensive detection of polyps during colonoscopies.

This article presents a systematic mapping study dedicated to conduct a literature review on machine learning and IoT applied in the identification of diseases through heart sounds. This research was conducted between January 2010 and July 2021, considering IEEE Xplore, PubMed Central, ACM Digital Library, JMIR- Journal of Medical Internet Research, Springer Library, and Science Direct. The initial search resulted in 4,372 papers, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 58 papers were selected for full reading to answer the research questions. The main results are: of the 58 articles selected, 46 (79.31%) mention heart rate observation methods with wearable sensors and digital stethoscopes, and 34 (58.62%) mention care with machine learning algorithms. The analysis of the studies based on the bibliometric network generated by the VOSviewer showed in 13 studies (22.41%) a trend related to the use of intelligent services in the prediction of diagnoses related to cardiovascular disorders.

In the Agriculture sector, control of plant leaf diseases is crucial as it influences the quality and production of plant species with an impact on the economy of any country. Therefore, automated identification and classification of plant leaf disease at an early stage is essential to reduce economic loss and to conserve the specific species. Previously, to detect and classify plant leaf disease, various Machine Learning models have been proposed; however, they lack usability due to hardware incompatibility, limited scalability and inefficiency in practical usage. Our proposed DeepLens Classification and Detection Model (DCDM) approach deal with such limitations by introducing automated detection and classification of the leaf diseases in fruits (apple, grapes, peach and strawberry) and vegetables (potato and tomato) via scalable transfer learning on A.W.S. SageMaker and importing it on AWS DeepLens for real-time practical usability. Cloud integration provides scalability and ubiquitous access to our approach. Our experiments on extensive image data set of healthy and unhealthy leaves of fruits and vegetables showed an accuracy of 98.78% with a real-time diagnosis of plant leaves diseases. We used forty thousand images for the training of deep learning model and then evaluated it on ten thousand images. The process of testing an image for disease diagnosis and classification using AWS DeepLens on average took 0.349s, providing disease information to the user in less than a second.

The study provides a comprehensive review of current methodologies, highlighting key innovations and their applications in financial market prediction. Techniques such as neural networks, support vector machines, random forests, and ensemble methods are examined in the context of their ability to analyze vast amounts of financial data, identify patterns, and generate actionable insights. Additionally, the research delves into the integration of alternative data sources, such as social media sentiment, news articles, and macroeconomic indicators, to improve prediction models. Through empirical analysis and case studies, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of advanced machine learning models in predicting stock prices, currency exchange rates, and commodity prices. It also discusses the challenges associated with these techniques, including overfitting, data quality issues, and the need for interpretability in model outputs. Findings suggest that machine learning techniques can significantly enhance the predictive power of financial models, offering more accurate and timely insights for investors and financial analysts. The study concludes with recommendations for future research directions, emphasizing the importance of model transparency, the incorporation of diverse data sets, and the continuous adaptation of machine learning algorithms to evolving market conditions.

Pilots can be one of the factors in many air traffic accidents. When one or both pilots are impaired (e.g. fatigue, drunk), disabled, capable but wrong-headed, don’t have sufficient training, distracted, miscommunicate with the air traffic controller, or follow wrong instructions from the air traffic controller, the risk of accident will increase dramatically. In some of these cases, the risk can be mitigated by using big data and machine learning. The system will collect and analyze large amount of data about the state of the aircraft, e.g., the flight path, the immediate environment around the aircraft, the weather and terrain information, and the pilots’ input to control the aircraft. Additional sensors such as eye tracking devices and biological monitor can also be added to determine the condition of the pilots. If the pilots’ input do not match proper reaction to the situation or the pilots are impaired, the learning machine will first provide an advisory to the pilots. If both pilots are impaired or incapable, a warning will be sent to the flight attendants and air traffic controllers so that they can take appropriate actions. The learning machine will be trained by both accident database and an automatic training system.

Over the past decade, the volume and quality of data in the oil and gas industry have exploded, breeding exciting opportunities to implement machine learning for better data- driven decisions. One critical example is hydraulic fracturing (HF), given our ever-growing reliance on HF to meet global hydrocarbon demand. This paper systematically explores the work of several researchers to apply ML techniques (including linear regression, neural networks, support vector machine, decision trees, and more) to HF-related operations, from production forecast to HF design. Furthermore, this study examines how optimization algorithms (including gradient-free, differential evolution, and surrogate-based optimizations) are incorporated with different ML techniques for selecting optimal HF parameters (like fracture number, proppant concentration, and more) during the planning process. The paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview without delving too deeply into technical intricacies to ensure accessibility for a broader audience. Additionally, it introduces innovative techniques currently being integrated into the industry and offers a clear understanding of the processes involved. Ultimately, the analysis concludes that machine learning is an accurate and cost-effective alternative for hydraulic fracturing optimization.

Osteoporosis is a common problem in orthopedic medicine, and it has become an important medical issue in orthopedics as Taiwan is gradually becoming an aging society. In the diagnosis of osteoporosis, the bone mineral density (BMD) derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the main criterion for orthopedic diagnosis of osteoporosis, but due to the high cost of this equipment and the lower penetration rate of the equipment compared to the X-ray images, the problem of osteoporosis has not been effectively solved for many people who suffer from osteoporosis, however, at present, in clinical diagnosis, doctors are not yet able to accurately interpret X-ray images for osteoporosis manually, and must rely on the data obtained from DXA. In recent years, with the continuous development of artificial intelligence, especially in machine learning and deep learning, significant progress has been made in image recognition. Therefore, it is worthwhile to revisit whether it is possible to use a convolutional neural network model to read a hip X-ray image and then predict the patient's BMD. In this study, we proposed a hip X-ray image segmentation model and a hip X-ray image recognition classification model. First, we used the U-Net model as a framework to segment the femoral neck, greater trochanter, wards triangle, and the total hip in the hip X-ray images. We then performed image matting and data augmentation. Finally, we constructed a predictive model for osteoporosis using deep learning algorithms. In the segmentation experiments, we used intersection over union (IoU) as the evaluation metric for image segmentation, and both the U-Net and U-Net++ models achieved segmentation results greater than or equal to 0.5. In the classification experiments, using the T-score as the classification basis, the total hip using the DenseNet121 model has the highest accuracy of 74%.

Water quality assessments are crucial for human health and environmental safeguards. The utilization of a subset of artificial intelligence such as Machine Learning (ML) presents significant impacts to enhance the prediction and classification of water quality. In this research, a set of diverse ML algorithms was evaluated to handle a comprehensive dataset of water quality measurements over an extended period. The aim was to develop a robust approach for accurately forecasting water quality. This approach employed machine learning classifiers such as Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Gaussian Process Classification (GPC), Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB), Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), XGBoost, and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). The water quality parameters assessed for pH, hardness, solids, chloramines, sulfate, conductivity, organic carbon, trihalomethanes and turbidity. The XGBoost model exhibited the highest accuracy of 89.47% among the classifiers and Stacked Ensemble Classifiers (SEC) improved the prediction further to 92.98%. The findings suggest that XGBoost and the SEC hold promise as reliable approaches for water quality assessments in contrast of artificial intelligence.

The discovery of interesting inter-relationships between the different malaria epidemiological parameters is essential towards the disease control. However, existing associative rule-based machine learning algorithms for pattern discovery are slow while working on high-dimensional Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) data, with the further challenge of data under fitting and inadequate result visualization. Hence, this work proposed a novel and efficient associative rule-based machine-learning algorithm with enhanced graphical visualization capacity for rigorous and confident biological result interpretation for malaria control. Through empirical and asymptotic comparative time-complexity performance evaluations, the proposed algorithm scaled better than other existing associative rule-based machine learning algorithms while maintaining its accuracy. The algorithm was applied to two real MIS data sets obtained from the Demographic and Health Survey repository and other supplementary literature source using Nigeria as a case study. The resulting interesting malaria epidemiological discovered novel trends were: a) the malaria disease might not be associated with the anemia symptom; b) there was no significant association between the anemia symptom and the wealth indices of individuals; c) there were other parameters associated with the insecticide resistance capacity of the malaria vector asides the knock down resistance alleles; d) the population dynamics of the malaria vector was not associated with the malaria disease endemicity. In conclusion, this work developed a computationally efficient and user-friendly associative rule-based machine-learning algorithm called E_Apriori for the control of the malaria disease.

Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow, a spongy tissue that secretes into the bones and serves as the site for the production of blood cells. One of the most prevalent kinds of leukemia in adults is acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Leukemia has non-specific signs and symptoms that are also similar to those of other interpersonal illnesses. The only way to accurately diagnose leukemia is by manually examining a stained blood smear or bone marrow aspirate under the microscope. However, this approach takes more time and is less precise. This paper describes a method for the automatic recognition and classification of AML in blood smears. Classification techniques include decision trees, logistic regression, support vector machines, and naive bayes.

The drug discovery process is a rigorous and time-consuming endeavor, typically requiring several years of extensive research and development. Although classical machine learning (ML) has proven successful in this field, its computational demands in terms of speed and resources are significant. In recent years, researchers have sought to explore the potential benefits of quantum computing (QC) in the context of ML, leading to the emergence of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) as a distinct research field. The objective of the current study is twofold: first, to present a review of the proposed QML algorithms for application in the drug discovery pipeline, and second, to compare QML algorithms with their classical and hybrid counterparts in terms of their efficiency. A query-based search of various databases took place, and five different categories of algorithms were identified in which QML was implemented. The majority of QML applications in drug discovery are primarily focused on the initial stages of the drug discovery pipeline, particularly with regard to the identification of novel drug-like molecules. Comparison results revealed that QML algorithms are strong rivals against the classical ones and a hybrid solution is the recommended approach at present.

(1) Background: We aim to construct a machine learning (ML) algorithm to predict the risk of distant metastasis (DM) of T1 and T2gallbladder cancer (GBC); (2) Demographic and clinical pathological data of T1 and T2 GBC patients were extracted from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2004 and 2015 to develop seven ML algorithm models. Models were evaluated based on accuracy, precision, recall rate, F1- score, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC); (3) Results:A total of 4371 patients were included in the study, of whom 764 (17.4%) developed DM. Multivariate logistic regression showed that age, histology, tumor size, T and N stages were independent factors in GBC with DM. A novel nomogram was established to predict distant metastasis in early T stage GBC patients. Evaluation indicators of the best model Random Forest (RF) were as follows: accuracy (0.828), recall rate (0.862), precision (0.811), F1- score (0.836), and AUC value (0.913); (4) Con-clusions: The RF model constructed in this study could accurately predict distant metastasis in GBC patients, which may provide clinicians with more personalized clinical decision-making recom-mendations.

With the continuous advancement of digital transformation, digital payments are playing an increasingly important role in the financial industry. This study aims to utilize machine learning models to predict and analyze digital payment behavior. Initially, the background and significance of digital payments in the financial sector are introduced. Subsequently, the current status and trends of traditional digital payment distribution are reviewed, alongside related work on digital payment behavior prediction. Methodologically, principles and applications of machine learning models such as logistic regression, decision trees, and random forests are elaborated, along with experimental design and data preprocessing methods. The experimental results and discussion section illustrates the performance of each model in digital payment prediction and explores their impact on credit decisions. This exploration equips financial institutions with more effective user behavior analysis and risk management tools, thereby fostering future development and application of digital payment technologies.

Financial fraud poses a severe threat to the integrity of corporate financial statements and market efficiency. While auditors play a crucial role in detecting and preventing such fraud, the unique characteristics of this domain, including class imbalance, high misclassification costs, and am-biguous attributes, pose significant challenges. Traditional classification algorithms may not be optimally suited for this task. This paper proposes a novel stacking ensemble learning approach to enhanced detecting of Financial Statement Scam. By combining the strengths of multiple base learners, including Random Forest, XGBoost, and Gradient Boosting Decision Trees, our model leverages their diverse predictions to improve overall performance. A Logistic Regression me-ta-learner is employed to integrate the outputs of the base learners, capturing their collective wisdom while mitigating individual weaknesses. Extensive experimentation using a real-world dataset shown the superiority of our approach, achieving remarkable recall, precision, accuracy, and area under the curve metrics. The proposed model outperforms individual base learners, under-scoring the efficacy of ensemble learning in tackling the intricate problem of financial fraud detection. This research contributes to the creation of substantial and robust fraud detection systems, fostering trust and transparency in financial markets.

Hepatitis C presents a significant global health challenge, necessitating early diagnosis and precise severity classification for timely medical intervention. This study explores the application of machine learning techniques to predict the severity of hepatitis C, leveraging an extensive dataset. Our approach encompasses rigorous data preprocessing, advanced model development, and fine-tuned hyperparameter optimization to ensure accurate and reliable predictions. We evaluated four classification models: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Support Vector Machine (SVM), comparing their accuracy in classifying patients. The results showed that the Random Forest and Gradient Boosting models outperformed the others with an accuracy of approximately 93.50%, demonstrating their potential in assisting Hepatitis C diagnosis. Further model enhancements through hyperparameter tuning and feature engineering can improve the precision of Hepatitis C diagnosis, contributing to better patient care.

This paper presents the development and implementation of a machine learning model to estimate the future price of commodities in the Brazilian market from technical analysis indicators. For this, two databases were obtained regarding the commodities sugar, cotton, corn, soybean and wheat, which were submitted to the steps of data cleaning, pre-processing and subdivision. From the pre-processed data, recurrent neural networks of the long short-term memory type were used to perform the prediction of data in the interval of 1 and 3 days ahead. These models were evaluated using mean squared error, obtaining an accuracy between 0.00010 and 0.00037 on the test data for 1 day ahead and 0.00015 to 0.00041 for 3 days ahead. However, based on the results obtained, it can be stated that the developed model obtained a good prediction performance for all commodities evaluated.

Solar radiation prediction is an important process in ensuring optimal exploitation of solar energy power. Numerous models have been applied to this problem, such as numerical weather prediction models and artificial intelligence models. However, well-designed hybridization approaches that combine numerical models with artificial intelligence models to yield a more powerful model can provide a significant improvement in prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose novel hybrid machine learning approaches that exploit auxiliary numerical data. The proposed hybrid methods invoke different machine learning paradigms, including feature selection, classification, and regression. Additionally, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are used in the proposed hybrid models. Feature selection is used for feature space dimension reduction to reduce the large number of recorded parameters that affect estimation and prediction processes. The rough set theory is applied for attribute reduction and the dependency degree is used as a fitness function. We investigate the effect of the attribute reduction process with thirty different classification and prediction models in addition to the proposed hybrid model. Then, different machine learning models are constructed based on classification and regression techniques to predict solar radiation. Moreover, other hybrid prediction models are formulated to use the output of the numerical model of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) as learning elements in order to improve the prediction accuracy. The proposed methodologies are evaluated using a data set that is collected from different regions in Saudi Arabia.

Due to the digitization and Internet of Things revolutions, the present electronic world has a wealth of cybersecurity data. Efficiently resolving cyber anomalies and attacks is becoming a growing concern in today's cyber security industry all over the world. Traditional security solutions are insufficient to address contemporary security issues due to the rapid proliferation of many sorts of cyber-attacks and threats. Utilizing artificial intelligence knowledge, especially machine learning technology, is essential to providing a dynamically enhanced, automated, and up-to-date security system through analyzing security data. In this paper, we provide an extensive view of machine learning algorithms, emphasizing how they can be employed for intelligent data analysis and automation in cybersecurity through their potential to extract valuable insights from cyber data. We also explore a number of potential real-world use cases where data-driven intelligence, automation, and decision-making enable next-generation cyber protection that is more proactive than traditional approaches. The future prospects of machine learning in cybersecurity are eventually emphasized based on our study, along with relevant research directions. Overall, our goal is to explore not only the current state of machine learning and relevant methodologies but also their applicability for future cybersecurity breakthroughs.

This research work describes an architecture for building a system that guide a user from a forecast generated by a machine learning model through a sequence of decision-making steps. The system is demonstrated in manufacturing demand forecasting use case and can be extended to other domains. In addition, the system provides means for knowledge acquisition by gathering data from users. Finally, it implements an active learning component and compares multiple strategies to recommend media news to the user. Such media news aims to provide additional context to demand forecasts and enhance judgment on decision-making.

The Latin American Giant Observatory (LAGO) is a ground-based extended cosmic rays observatory designed to study transient astrophysical events, the role of the atmosphere on the formation of secondary particles, and space-weather-related phenomena. With the use of a network of Water Cherenkov Detectors, LAGO measures the secondary particle flux, a consequence of the interaction of astroparticles impinging on the Earth with the atmosphere. These interactions yield a flux of secondary particles that can be grouped into three distinct basic constituents: the electromagnetic, muonic, and hadronic components. In this work we extend our previous research by using detailed simulations of the expected atmospheric response to the primary flux and the corresponding response of our WCDs to atmospheric radiation. After implemented OPTICS, a density-based clustering algorithm, to identify patterns in data collected by a single WCD, we have further refined our approach by implementing a method that categorizes and differentiates particle groups using advanced unsupervised machine learning techniques. Our analysis demonstrates that applying our enhanced methodology can accurately identify the originating particle with a high degree of confidence on a single-pulse basis, highlighting its precision and reliability. These promising results suggest the feasibility of implementing machine-learning-based models throughout LAGO distributed detection network and other astroparticles observatories for semi-automated, onboard and real-time data analysis. When a particle enters a Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD), it generates a measurable signal characterized by unique features correlating to the particle’s type and the detector’s specific response. The resulting charge histograms from these signals provide valuable insights into the flux of primary astroparticles and their key characteristics. However, this data is insufficient to effectively distinguish between the contributions of different secondary particles. This research extends our previous investigations, wherein we implemented OPTICS, a density-based clustering algorithm, to identify patterns in data collected by a single WCD. We have further refined our approach by implementing a method that categorizes and differentiates particle groups using advanced unsupervised machine learning techniques. This methodology facilitates the differentiation among particle types and utilizes the detector’s nuanced response to each particle type, thus pinpointing the principal contributors within each group. In this work, we utilize OPTICS to analyze simulated data, further validating the proposed method. We created a simulated dataset by combining the outputs of the ARTI and MEIGA frameworks. This dataset simulates the expected WCD signals produced by the flux of secondary particles during one day at the LAGO site in Bariloche, Argentina, situated at 865 meters above sea level. To achieve this, real-time magnetospheric and local atmospheric conditions for February and March of 2012 were analyzed, and the resultant atmospheric secondary-particle flux was integrated into a specific MEIGA application featuring a comprehensive Geant4 model of the WCD at this LAGO location. The output from MEIGA was modified for effective integration into our machine learning pipeline. Our analysis demonstrates that applying our enhanced methodology can accurately identify the originating particle with a high degree of confidence on a single-pulse basis, highlighting its precision and reliability. These promising results suggest the feasibility of implementing machine-learning-based models throughout the LAGO distributed detection network for semi-automated, onboard and real-time data analysis. Wind energy is becoming an essential source of power for countries which have the aim to reduce greenhouse gases emission and mitigate the effects of global warming. The Wind Turbines (WTs) installed around the globe is increasing significantly every year. The dramatic increase in wind power has encountered quite a few challenges, among which the major issues are availability and reliability. The unexpected failure in WTs Gearbox (GB) ultimately increases the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cost. The identification of faults in the earlier stages before it turns to catastrophic damage to other components of WT is crucial. This research deals with the prediction of WT failures by using a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The main aim is to forecast the temperature of the WTs GB to predict the impending overheating of the GB at an early stage. The earlier prediction will help to optimize the maintenance period and to save maintenance expenses and, even more important, generate warnings in due time to avoid major damages or even technical disasters. In the proposed method we compared six different machine learning (ML) models based on error and accuracy of prediction. The bagging regressor is the best ML model, which results in the mean square error of 0.33 and R of 99.8 on training data. The bagging regressor is then used to predict the fault in the WT GB, which detected the anomalous behavior of WT GB 59 days earlier than the actual failure. This model also detects the extremely unusual behavior of the GB 9 days earlier than a complete failure.

The Internet of Things technology opens the horizon for a broader scope of intelligent applications in smart cities. However, the massive amount of traffic exchanged among devices may cause security risks, significantly when devices are compromised or vulnerable to cyber-attack. An intrusion detection system is the most powerful tool to detect unauthorized attempts to access smart systems. It identifies malicious and benign traffic by analyzing network traffic. In most cases, only a fraction of network traffic can be considered malicious. As a result, it is difficult for an intrusion detection system to detect attacks at high detection rates while maintaining a low false alarm rate. This work proposes an integrated framework to detect suspicious traffic to address secure data communication in smart cities. This paper presents an approach to developing an intrusion detection system to detect various attack types. It can be done by implementing a Principal Component Analysis method that eliminates redundancy and reduces system dimensionality. Furthermore, the proposed model shows how to improve intrusion detection system performance by implementing an ensemble model.

A 'little brother' of pain, itch is an unpleasant sensation that creates a specific urge to scratch. To date, various machine-learning based image classifiers (MBICs) have been proposed for quantitative analysis of itch-induced scratch behaviour of laboratory animals in an automated, non-invasive, inexpensive and real-time manner. In spite of MBICs' advantages, the overall performances (accuracy, sensitivity and specificity) of current MBIC approaches remains inconsistent, with their values varying from ~50% to ~99%, for which the reasons underlying have yet to be investigated further, both computationally and experimentally. To look into the variation of the performance of MBICs in automated detection of itch-induced scratch, this article focuses on the experimental data recording step, and reports here for the first time that MBICs' overall performance is inextricably linked to the sharpness of experimentally recorded video of laboratory animal scratch behaviour. This article furthermore demonstrates for the first time that a linearly correlated relationship exists between video sharpness and overall performance (accuracy and specificity, but not sensitivity) of MBICs, and highlight the primary role of experimental data recording in rapid, accurate and consistent quantitative assessment of laboratory animal itch.

This study aimed to ascertain the applicability of a machine learning approach to the description of residential mobility patterns of households in the Seoul metropolitan region (SMR). The spatial range and temporal scope of the empirical study were set to 2015 to review the most recent residential mobility patterns in the SMR. The analysis data used in this study involve the microdata of Internal Migration Statistics provided by the Microdata Integrated Service of Statistics Korea. We analysed the residential relocation distance of households in the SMR by using machine learning techniques such as ordinary least squares regression and decision tree regression. The results of this study showed that a decision tree model can be more advantageous than ordinary least squares regression in terms of the explanatory power and estimation of moving distance. A large number of residential movements are mainly related to the accessibility to employment markets and some household characteristics. The shortest movements occur when households with two or more members move into densely populated districts. In contrast, job-based residential movements have relatively longer distance. Furthermore, we derived knowledge on residential relocation distance, which can provide significant information on the urban management of metropolitan residential districts and the construction of reasonable housing policies.

A novel machine learning approach is presented in this paper, based on extracting latent information and using it to assist decision making on ambulance attendance and conveyance to a hospital. The approach includes two steps: in the first, a forward model analyzes the clinical and, possibly, non-clinical factors (explanatory variables), predicting whether positive decisions (response variables) should be given to the ambulance call, or not; in the second, a backward model analyzes the latent variables extracted from the forward model to infer the decision making procedure. The forward model is implemented through a machine, or deep learning technique, whilst the backward model is implemented through unsupervised learning. An experimental study is presented, which illustrates the obtained results, by investigating emergency ambulance calls to people in nursing and residential care homes, over a one-year period, using an anonymized data set provided by East Midlands Ambulance Service in United Kingdom.

Industrial pig farming is associated with negative technological pressure on the bodies of pigs. Leg weakness and lameness are the sources of significant economic loss in raising pigs. Therefore, it is important to identify predictors of limb condition. This work presents assessments of the state of limbs using indicators of growth and meat characteristics of pigs based on machine learning algorithms. We have evaluated and compared the accuracy of prediction for several ML classification algorithms (Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, Artificial Neural Networks, C50Tree, Support Vector Machines, Naive Bayes, Generalized Linear Models, Boost, and Linear Discriminant Analysis) and have identified the Random Forest and K-Nearest Neighbors as the best performing algorithms for predicting pig leg weakness using a small set of simple measurements that can be taken at an early stage of animal development. Muscle Thickness, Back Fat amount, and Average Daily Gain serve as significant predictors of conformation of pig limbs. Our work demonstrates the utility and relative ease of using machine learning algorithms to assess the state of limbs in pigs based on growth rate and meat characteristics.

Viral infections cause metabolic dysregulation in the infected organism. The present study used metabolomics techniques and machine learning algorithms to retrospectively analyze the alter-ations of a broad panel of metabolites in the serum and urine of a cohort of 126 patients hospi-talized with COVID-19. Results were compared with those of 50 healthy subjects and 45 COVID-19 negative patients but with bacterial infectious diseases. Metabolites were analyzed by gas chro-matography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The main metabolites al-tered in the sera of COVID-19 patients were those of pentose glucuronate interconversion, ascorbate and fructose metabolism, nucleotide sugars, and nucleotide and amino acid metabolism. Alterations in serum maltose, mannonic acid, xylitol, or glyceric acid metabolites segregated positive patients from the control group with high diagnostic accuracy, while succinic acid seg-regated positive patients from those with other disparate infectious diseases. Increased lauric acid concentrations were associated with severity of infection and death. Urine analyses could not discriminate between groups. Targeted metabolomics and machine learning algorithms facilitated the exploration of the metabolic alterations underlying COVID-19 infection, and to identify po-tential biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease.

As renewable energy generation prediction systems have been introduced into the energy trading market, accurate prediction of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy generation has become a crucial challenge for ensuring stable trade of variable energy. Therefore, it is essential to quantitatively investigate and analyze current prediction technology and develop more advanced prediction systems. In this study, three models for predicting PV energy generation were investigated. Multiple regression, random forest, and gradient boosting machine (GBM) models were con-structed for 15 utility-scale power plants throughout South Korea. Model performance was evaluated in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). The multiple regression-based model had an RMSE of 12.00% and MAE of 9.06%. The random forest model had an RMSE of 11.69% and MAE of 8.61%. The GBM model had an RMSE of 11.34% and MAE of 8.18%, indicating its superior accuracy among the three models in predicting PV energy generation. These findings provide valuable insights that may contribute to the development of advanced PV energy generation models and their application in grid operations.

Machine Learning is increasingly and ubiquitously being used in the medical domain. Evaluation metrics like accuracy, precision, and recall may indicate the performance of the models but not necessarily the reliability of their outcomes. This paper assesses the effectiveness of a number of machine learning algorithms applied to an important dataset in the medical domain, specifically, mental health, by employing explainability methodologies. Using multiple machine learning algorithms and model explainability techniques, the project provides insights into the model workings to help determine the reliability of the machine learning algorithm predictions. The results are not intuitive. It was found that the models were focusing significantly on less relevant features and at times, unsound ranking of the features to make the predictions. The paper therefore argues that it is important for research in applied machine learning to provide insights into explainability of the models in addition to other performance metrics like accuracy. This is particularly important for applications in critical domains such as healthcare. A future direction is to investigate methods to quantify the effectiveness of the machine learning models in terms of the insights from their explainability.

Startups are playing increasingly influential roles in the technology sector of the world. India has been a rapidly growing economy and hosts over one hundred thousand total startups. Investors have been increasingly investing in the Indian technology sector. However, the Indian startup ecosystem is different to the American startup ecosystem and requires a separate analysis to determine important influences for their success. Through this research with responsible machine learning, entrepreneurs will be empowered to better understand how to successfully raise their company. I collected data from Crunchbase and defined a successful startup as one who has acquired another company, was acquired, or went public. I used Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost to predict the success of the startups. To determine the most important factors, I used the feature importance tools provided by the models. I compared these results and found that the time taken between the founding and first funding of the company, commonly referred to as seed lag, was the most pivotal factor to every model’s prediction of success.

Sleep disorder is a disease that can be categorized as both an emotional and physical problem. It imposes several difficulties and problems, such as distress during the day, sleep-wake disorders, anxiety, and several other problems. Hence, the main objective of this research is to utilize the strong capabilities of machine learning in the prediction of sleep disorders. In specific, this research aims to meet three main objectives. These objectives are to identify the best regression model, the best classification model, and the best learning strategy that highly suits sleep disorder datasets. Considering two related datasets and several evaluation metrics that are related to the tasks of regression and classification, the results revealed the superiority of the MultilayerPerceptron, SMOreg, and KStar regression models compared with the other twenty-three regression models. Also, IBK, RandomForest, and RandomizableFilteredClassifier showed superior performance compared with other classification models that belong to several learning strategies. Finally, the Function learning strategy showed the best predictive performance among the six considered strategies in both datasets and with respect to the most evaluation metrics.

An accurate and timely precipitation forecast is essential for water resources management in hydropower, irrigation, and reservoir control. The conventional methods are limited by their inability to capture the high precipitation variability in time and space. In the present work, a wavelet-based deep learning approach is adopted to forecast precipitation using the lagged monthly rainfall, local climate variables, and global teleconnections such as IOD, PDO, NAO, and Nino 3.4 as predictors. The method was tested and validated over the Krishna River Basin in India. Overall, the forecasting accuracy was higher using the wavelet-based hybrid models than the single-scale models. The proposed multi-scale model was then applied to the different climatic regions of the country, and it was shown that the model could forecast the rainfall at reasonable accuracy for different climate zones of the country.

Background: Risk of metastatic recurrence of breast cancer after initial diagnosis and treatment depends on the presence of a number of risk factors. Although most univariate risk factors have been identified using classical methods, machine-learning methods are also being conducted to tease out non-obvious contributors to a patient’s individual risk of developing late distant metastasis. Bayesian-network algorithms may predict not only risk factors but also interactions among these risks, which consequently lead to metastatic breast cancer. We proposed to apply a previously developed machine-learning method to predict risk factors of 5-, 10- and 15-year metastasis. Methods: We applied a previously validated algorithm named the Markov Blanket and Interactive risk factor Learner (MBIL) on the electronic health record (EHR)-based Lynn Sage database (LSDB) from the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. This algorithm provided an output of both single and interactive risk factors of 5-, 10-, and 15-year metastasis from LSDB. We individually examined and interpreted the clinical relevance of these interactions based on years to metastasis and the reliance on interactivity between risk factors. Results: We found that with lower alpha values (low interactivity score), the prevalence of variables with an independent influence on long term metastasis was higher (i.e., HER2, TNEG). As the value of alpha increased to 480, stronger interactions were needed to define clusters of factors that increased the risk of metastasis (i.e., ER, smoking, race, alcohol usage). Conclusion: MBIL identified single and interacting risk factors of metastatic breast cancer, many of which were supported by clinical evidence. These results strongly recommend the development of further large data studies with different databases to validate the degree to which some of these variables impact metastatic breast cancer in the long term.

Identifying dust aerosols from passive satellite images is of great interest for many applications. In this study, we developed 5 different machine-learning (ML) and deep-learning (DL) based algorithms, including Logistic Regression, K Nearest Neighbor, Random Forest (RF), Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), to identify dust aerosols in the daytime satellite images from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) under cloud-free conditions on a global scale. In order to train the ML and DL algorithms, we collocated the state-of-the-art dust detection product from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) with the VIIRS observations along the CALIOP track. The 16 VIIRS M-band observations with the center wavelength ranging from deep blue to thermal infrared, together with solar-viewing geometries and pixel time and locations, are used as the predictor variables. Four different sets of training input data are constructed based on different combinations of VIIRS pixel and predictor variables. The validation and comparison results based on the collocated CALIOP data indicates that the FFNN method based on all available predictor variables is the best performing one among all methods. It has an averaged dust detection accuracy of about 81 %, 89 % and 85 % over land, ocean and whole globe, respectively, compared with collocated CALIOP. When applied to off-track VIIRS pixels, the FFNN method retrieves geographical distributions of dust that are in good agreement with on-track results as well as CALIOP statistics. For further evaluation, we compared our results based on the ML and DL algorithms to NOAA’s Aerosol Detection Product (ADP) , which is a product that classifies dust, smoke and ash using physical-based methods. The comparison reveals both similarity and differences. Overall, this study demonstrates the great potential of ML and DL methods for dust detection and proves that these methods can be trained on the CALIOP track and then applied to the whole granule of VIIRS granule.

In this work, a tailored extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm to enhance the overall robustness of gas analyzer based on the tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) method is presented. The ELM model is tailored through activation function selection, input weight and bias searching, and cross validation method to address the analyzer robustness issues for industrial process analysis field application. The two particular issues are the inaccurate gas concentration measurement caused by the process gas background components variation, and the inaccurate spectra shift calculation caused by spectral interference. By using our algorithm, the concentration error is reduced by one order of magnitude over a much larger stream pressure and component range compared with that obtained by classical least square (CLS) fitting methods based on reference curves. Additionally, it is shown that with our algorithm, the wavelength shift accuracy is improved to less than 1 count over 1000 counts spectra length. In order to test the viability of our algorithm, a trace ethylene (C₂H₄) TDLAS analyzer with coexisting methane was implemented, and its experimental measurements support analyzing robustness enhancement effect.

The aim was to assess the precision and accuracy of cephalometric analyses performed by artificial intelligence (AI) with and without human augmentation. Four dental professionals with varying experience levels and AI identified 31 landmarks on 30 cephalometric radiographs twice. These landmarks were re-identified by all examiners with the aid of AI. Precision and accuracy were assessed by using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and mean absolute errors (MAEs). AI revealed the highest precision with a mean ICC of 0.97, while the dental student had the lowest (mean ICC: 0.77). AI/human augmentation method significantly improved precision of the orthodontist, resident, dentist, and dental student by 3.26%, 2.17%, 19.75%, and 23.38%, respectively. The orthodontist demonstrated the highest accuracy with a MAE of 1.57 mm/˚. AI/human augmentation method improved the accuracy of the orthodontist, resident, dentist, and dental student by 12.74%, 19.10%, 35.69%, and 33.96%, respectively. AI demonstrated excellent precision and good accuracy in automated cephalometric analysis. The precision and accuracy of the examiners with the aid of AI improved by 10.47% and 27.27%, respectively. The AI/human augmentation method significantly improved the precision and accuracy of less experienced dental professionals to that of an experienced orthodontist.

Due to the substantial growth of internet users and its spontaneous access via electronic devices, the amount of electronic contents is growing enormously in recent years through instant messaging, social networking posts, blogs, online portals, and other digital platforms. Unfortunately, the misapplication of technologies has boosted with this rapid growth of online content which leads to the rise in suspicious activities. People misuse the web media to disseminate malicious activity, perform the illegal movement, abuse other people, and publicize suspicious contents on the web. The suspicious contents usually available in the form of text, audio or video, whereas text contents have been used in most of the cases to perform suspicious activities. Thus, one of the most challenging issues for NLP researchers is to develop a system that can identify suspicious text efficiently from the specific contents. In this paper, a Machine Learning (ML)-based classification model is proposed (hereafter called STD) to classify Bengali text into non-suspicious and suspicious categories based on its original contents. A set of ML classifiers with various features has been used on our developed corpus, consisting of 7000 Bengali text documents where 5600 documents used for training and 1400 documents used for testing. The performance of the proposed system is compared with the human baseline and existing ML techniques. The SGD classifier `tf-idf’ with the combination of unigram and bigram features are used to achieve the highest accuracy of 84.57%.

Skin cancer is one of the most common and potentially deadly forms of cancer, making early and accurate detection crucial for effective treatment. In this context, leveraging advanced machine learning techniques can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. This paper presents an intelligent system for monitoring skin cancer, leveraging a deep feature extraction approach based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) combined with a Random Forest (RF) classifier. The system processes skin cancer images to extract features using three pre-trained CNN models: ResNet18, Darknet19, and MobileNetv2, which are then used to train an RF classifier for accurate skin cancer detection. The proposed model is designed for edge deployment, making it suitable for real-time applications. Experiments were conducted using the "Skin Cancer: Malignant vs. Benign" dataset, specifically curated for skin cancer classification. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, achieving an accuracy of 82.85%, with a precision of 82.69%, a sensitivity of 82.86%, a specificity of 82.86%, and an F1-Score of 82.75%.

Since the advent of artificial intelligence, it has not only transformed the way we live, but is also accelerating the transformation of production methods. Machine learning is a pivotal technology that endows computers with intelligence. The primary driving force behind its advancement is the pursuit of rapid and precise knowledge acquisition. Nevertheless, the existing enterprise risk decision support system is inadequate in terms of both timeliness and effectiveness when confronted with the task of analysing vast quantities of data. Furthermore, it lacks the capacity to assimilate the expertise of managers and to facilitate interaction in an intuitive manner.By combining a variety of machine learning models, the ensemble learning method effectively leverages the advantages of different algorithms, thereby improving the accuracy and stability of risk prediction. Each model provides a unique perspective and decision-making boundaries when dealing with complex enterprise risk data, but a single model may not be adequate when faced with a particular data set or a particular type of risk. The ensemble method overcomes the problem of bias or overfitting that may be caused by a single model by combining the prediction results of multiple models, so as to obtain a more robust prediction effect. These methods optimize the final prediction results based on how well they perform during training by giving different weights to each model. This convergence strategy significantly improves the accuracy of enterprise risk assessment and helps to provide decision-makers with more reliable data support to make more informed risk management decisions in complex business environments.

Despite the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, the global pandemic remains a significant health challenge. Timely detection of the virus is crucial for effective containment efforts, prompting the exploration of machine learning (ML) models for COVID-19 detection. highlights the ongoing significance of COVID-19 as a global health crisis despite the availability of vaccines. To address the need for timely virus detection, the study explores the efficacy of machine learning (ML) models, including DNN, Voting, Bagging, SVC_rbf, SVC_linear, SVC_polynomial, and SVC_sigmoid, in predicting COVID-19 infection probability. With a dataset comprising 4000 samples split into 3200 for training and 800 for testing, the analysis reveals that DNN and Voting models demonstrate the highest performance, achieving an impressive accuracy of 89%. These results underscore the potential of ML techniques, particularly DNN and ensemble methods like Voting, in facilitating early COVID-19 detection and contributing to effective pandemic management. The study emphasizes the importance of continued research to further refine and optimize ML-based COVID-19 detection systems.

Analysis of land use/land cover (LULC) in the catchment areas is the first action toward safeguarding the freshwater resources. The LULC information in the watershed has gained popularity in the natural science field as it helps water resource managers and environmental health specialists develop natural resource conservation strategies based on available quantitative information. Thus, remote sensing is the cornerstone in addressing environmental-related issues at the catchment level. In this study, the performance of four machine learning algorithms (MLAs), such as Random Forests (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Naïve Bayes (NB) was investigated to classify the catchment into nine relevant classes of the undulating watershed landscape using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (L8-OLI) imagery. The assessment of the MLAs were based on the visual inspection of the analyst and the commonly used assessment metrics, such as user’s accuracy (UA), producers’ accuracy (PA), overall accuracy (OA), and kappa coefficient. The MLAs produced good results, where RF (OA= 97.02%, Kappa= 0.96), SVM (OA= 89.74 %, Kappa= 0.88), ANN (OA= 87%, Kappa= 0.86), and NB (OA= 68.64 Kappa= 0.58). The results show the outstanding performance of the RF model over SVM and ANN with a small margin. While NB yielded satisfactory results, which could be primarily influenced by its sensitivity to limited training samples. In contrast, the robust performance of RF could be due to an ability to classify high-dimensional data with limited training data.

Water pollution is a common problem for dams situated within an urban or agricultural catchment. This can negatively affect the hydro ecosystem, drinking, recreational and other uses of water. In this study, the drinking water quality class of the Roodeplaat Dam, South Africa which faces pollution problems was modeled using machine learning algorisms in Python Jupyter Notebook 6.0.0. Eleven monthly water quality parameters recorded at five sampling stations from January 1981 to September 2017 were used for training and testing the model. Five machine learning classifiers: Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Linear Regression (LR) at a test size of 20%, 25%, 30%, and 40% were used to classify water into five classes (Excellent to Very bad). It was investigated that the dam water has only three classes good, medium, and bad. The prediction accuracies of machine learning algorithms from the highest to the lowest were 96.39%, 96.17%, 92.25%, 90.20, and 54.19% for KNN, DT, SVM, GNB, and LR, respectively. Therefore, KNN at a test size of 30% was recommended to classify the water quality of Roodeplat Dam accurately. Hence, machine learning algorithms can be used to identify the class of water quality before the water is treated and distributed for drinking use.

In recent years, there has been a rise in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The diagnosis of ASD requires behavioral observation and standardized testing completed by highly trained experts. Early intervention for ASD can begin as early as 1-2 years of age, but ASD diagnoses are not typically made until ages 2-5 years, thus delaying the start of intervention. There is an urgent need for non-invasive biomarkers to detect ASD in infancy. While previous research using physiological recordings has focused on brain-based biomarkers of ASD, this study investigated the potential of electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings as an ASD biomarker in 3-6-month-old infants. We recorded heart activity of infants at typical and elevated familial likelihood for ASD during naturalistic interactions with objects and caregivers. After obtaining the ECG signals, features such as heart rate variability (HRV) and sympathetic and parasympathetic activities were extracted from them. Then we evaluated the effectiveness of multiple machine learning classifiers for the classification of ASD likelihood. Our findings support our hypothesis that infant ECG signals contain a significant amount of information about ASD familial likelihood. Among the various machine learning algorithms tested, XGBoost performed best according to sensitivity (0.76±0.12), f1-score (0.75±0.12), precision (0.79±0. 12), classification accuracy (0.77±0.12, p-value = 0.01) and AUC (0.76±0.12, p-value = 0.02). These results suggest that ECG signals contains relevant information about the likelihood of an infant to develop ASD. Future studies should consider the potential of information contained in ECG, and other indices of autonomic control, for the development of biomarkers of ASD in infancy.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the whole world, but not all countries were impacted equally. This opens the question of what factors can explain the initial faster spread in some countries compared to others. Many such factors are overshadowed by the effect of the countermeasures, so we studied the early phases of the infection when countermeasures have not yet taken place. We collected the most diverse dataset of potentially relevant factors and infection metrics to date for this task. Using it, we show the importance of different factors and factor categories as determined by both statistical methods and machine learning (ML) feature selection (FS) approaches. Factors related to culture (e.g., individualism, openness), development, and travel proved the most important. A more thorough factor analysis was then made using a novel rule discovery algorithm. We also show how interconnected these factors are and caution against relying on ML analysis in isolation. Importantly, we explore potential pitfalls found in the methodology of similar work and demonstrate their impact on COVID-19 data analysis. Our best models using the decision tree classifier can predict the infection class with roughly 80% accuracy.

Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a representation of elevation data that represent terrain with or without overlaying objects of the Earth. It is the ideal and most widely used method for determining topography. DEMs are generated from various techniques such as traditional Surveying, Photogrammetry, InSAR, LiDAR, Clinometry and radargrammetry. It has been observed that mostly LiDAR-generated DEMs provide the best accuracy. The unavailability of LiDAR data in most of the region restricts global researchers from high-resolution and accurate DEMs. The recent launch of ICESat-2 with a 13m beam footprint and 0.7m pulse interval, promises elevations at high orbital precision. Its accuracy is of the order of few centimeters in complex topography, because of this ICESat-2 proves to be a good source to generate high-accuracy DEMs. ICESat-2 provides discrete photon data with elevations of points on the Earth’s surface. Traditional interpolation techniques tend to over-smooth the estimated space and still are unable to justify the complicated continuity in the topographical data. Machine learning algorithms are widely being used to extract patterns and spatial extent in geographic data. To estimate a DEM from ICESat-2 LiDAR point data, machine learning regression algorithms are implemented in this study. The present study has been performed for a plain region of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Studies have shown that Cartosat-1 DEM V3 R1 product provides an accuracy of the order of 2m in predominantly plain regions, hence taken for this region. Current work focuses on comparing various regression-based machine-learning techniques to interpolate DEM from ICESat-2 data The RMSE of the interpolated DEM resulted from the Gradient Boosting Regressor, Random Forest Regressor, Decision Tree Regressor, and Multi-Layer Perceptron Regressor was 7.13m, 7.01m, 7.15m, and 3.76m, respectively when evaluated against the TANDEM-X DEM of the same region. The MLP Regressor is found to perform the best among the four algorithms tested.

Recent advancements in Software Defined Networking (SDN) makes it possible to overcome the management challenges of traditional network by logically centralizing control plane and decoupling it from forwarding plane. Through centralized controllers, SDN can prevent security breach, but it also brings in new threats and vulnerabilities. Central controller can be a single point of failure. Hence, flow-based anomaly detection system in OpenFlow Controller can secure SDN to a great extent. In this paper, we investigated two different approaches of flow-based intrusion detection system in OpenFlow Controller. The first of which is based on machine-learning algorithm where NSL-KDD dataset with feature selection ensures the accuracy of 82% with Random Forest classifier using Gain Ratio feature selection evaluator. In the later phase, the second approach is combined with Gated Recurrent Unit Long Short-Term Memory based intrusion detection model based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) where we applied an appropriate ANOVA F-Test and Recursive Feature Elimination feature selection method to improve the classifier performance and achieved an accuracy of 88%. Substantial experiments with comparative analysis clearly show that, deep learning would be a better choice for intrusion detection in OpenFlow Controller.

Background. Gastrointestinal (GI) distress is prevalent and often persistent among cancer survivors, impacting their quality of life, nutrition, daily function, and mortality. GI health screening is important to prevent and manage this distress. However, accurate classification methods for GI health remain unexplored. We aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models to classify GI health status (better vs. worse) by incorporating biological aging and social determinants of health (SDOH) indicators in cancer survivors. Methods. We included 645 adult cancer survivors from the 1999-2002 NHANES survey. Using training and test datasets, we employed six ML models to classify GI health conditions (better vs. worse). These models incorporated leukocyte telomere length (TL), SDOH, and demographic/clinical data. Results. Among the ML models, the random forest (RF) performed the best, achieving a high area under the curve (AUC = 0.98) in the training dataset. The gradient boosting machine (GBM) demonstrated excellent classification performance with a high AUC (0.80) in the test dataset. TL, several socio-economic factors, cancer risk behaviors (including lifestyle choices), and inflammatory markers were associated with GI health. The most significant input features for better GI health in our ML models were longer TL and an annual household income above the poverty level, followed by routine physical activity, low white blood cell counts, and food security. Conclusions. Our findings provide valuable insights into classifying and identifying risk factors related to GI health, including biological aging and SDOH indicators. To enhance model predictability, further longitudinal studies and external clinical validations are necessary.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total hip and knee arthroplasty remains an extremely challenging and relatively high complication. This study aims to develop, validate and evaluate the use of machine learning (ML) algorithm to predict PJI in patients undergoing revision arthroplasties. Methods: A comprehensive review of patients undergoing hip or knee revision arthroplasty from 1 January 2015 to 31 March 2021 was conducted. Clinical data coming from preoperative patients history, laboratory analysis and demographic characteristics of patients were screened. Final data have been used to train a Logistic Regression model with the aim of predicting PJI preoperatively. Results: 1360 patients were enrolled, 1141 in the aseptic cohort and 219 in the infected cohort were included. ML demonstrated good discriminatory performance in predicting PJI in the selected patients (area under the curve 0.770 ± 0.006 in the training set and 0.720 ± 0.057 in the test set), and identified 3 significant predictors of PJI. Conclusion: ML algorithm trained using preoperative clinical data accurately predicted PJI. The incorporation of ML models into preoperative assessment of patients undergoing prosthetic revision procedures are useful in providing specific risk assessment to aid individualised counselling, shared decision making and presurgical optimization.

In the realm of agribusiness, transformative shifts are underway, propelled by the growing demands and expanding scales of grain production. This evolution calls for a critical reevaluation of the existing paradigms in coffee production and marketing paradigms, with a specific focus on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI). This work aims to review, synthesize, and summarize the available data regarding how Machine Learning (ML) has been used to detect and classify characteristics in coffee beans and leaves. For this purpose, a comprehensive literature review of the most significant research contributions describing the application of AI for advanced classification techniques in coffee agriculture has been carried out. Our analysis suggests that implementing AI technologies allows the classification of coffee, encompassing various attributes such as maturity, roast intensity, disease identification, flavor profiles, and overall quality. More largely, this technological advancement holds the potential to revolutionize coffee farming by providing producers and agricultural specialists with sophisticated tools to enhance production efficiency, minimize costs, and improve the accuracy and confidence of their decision-making processes.

Droughts have a substantial effect on water resources, agriculture, and ecosystems on a worldwide scale. In the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, droughts exacerbated by climate change are significantly endangering the region's agricultural sustainability and output. Conventional forecasting techniques frequently do not capture the intricate dynamics of meteorological phenomena associated to drought effectively, prompting the exploration of more advanced methodologies. This work utilises artificial intelligence, par-ticularly machine learning methods like Gradient Boosting and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), to enhance drought pre-diction in the Mekong Delta. The study utilises data from 11 meteorological stations spanning from 1990 to 2022 to create and evaluate Machine Learning models based on several climatic factors. We utilise Gradient Boosting and XGBoost algorithms to estimate the Standardised Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and evaluate their effectiveness in comparison to con-ventional forecasting techniques. The results show that Machine Learning, particularly XGBoost, surpasses traditional approaches in predicting SPEI accuracy at various time scales. XGBoost demonstrates skill in understanding the complex relationships between climatic factors, with R² values falling between 0.90 and 0.94 for 1-month forecasts. The progress highlights the potential of Machine Learning in improving drought management and adaptation tactics, proposing the incorporation of Machine Learning forecasting models into decision-making processes to enhance drought resistance in susceptible areas.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurological illness that worsens gradually. It is known as the most frequent cause of dementia. Moreover, Alzheimer's disease is a general term for memory loss and other cognitive impairments severe enough to disrupt daily life. The disease often grows in middle-aged and elderly people with the gradual loss of cognitive ability. Since the diagnosis of the illness is time consuming, a novel machine learning approach is proposed in this research to diagnose Alzheimer's levels based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). More specifically, to provide distinct information for classification we have implemented the proposed method on a native MRI scans dataset containing three MRI channels; namely T1, T2, and, T2 tirm, which are shown in red, blue and green, respectively. The five middle layers of these three types of MRI scans are combined to form five RGB layers. In addition, we use a Convolutional Neural Network to classify each composed layer, and the final disease type is predicted using majority voting. finally, the F1-Score has been used to assess method performance, indicated that 92% of predictions of the proposed model were accurate.
