This study addresses the prediction of recurring failures in water supply networks, a complex and costly task, but essential for the effective maintenance of these vital infrastructures. Using historical failure data provided by Companhia de Água e Esgotos da Paraíba (CAGEPA), the research focuses on predicting the time until the next failure at specific points in the network. The authors divided the failures into two categories: Occurrences of New Faults (ONF) and Recurrences of Faults (RF). To make the predictions, they used predictive models based on Machine Learning, more specifically on MLP (Multi Layer Perceptron) neural networks. The study revealed that, by analyzing data from past failures and considering factors such as altitude, number of failures on the same street and days between failures, it is possible to achieve an accuracy greater than 80% in predicting failures within a 90-day interval. This demonstrates the feasibility of using fault history to predict future water supply outages with significant accuracy. These forecasts allow water utilities to plan and optimize their maintenance, minimizing inconvenience and losses. The article contributes to the field of water infrastructure management by suggesting that the data-driven approach can be applied in other cities or in networks of different types, such as energy or communication networks. The conclusions highlight the importance of data collection and analysis in preventing failures and optimizing water utilities’ resources.

Quantum computing (QC) has opened the door to advancements in machine learning (ML) tasks that are currently implemented in the classical domain. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are classical ML architectures that exploit data locality and possess a simpler structure than fully-connected multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) without compromising the accuracy of classification. However, the concept of preserving data locality is usually overlooked in the existing quantum counterparts of CNNs, particularly for extracting multi-features in multidimensional data. In this paper, we present a multidimensional quantum convolutional classifier (MQCC) that performs multidimensional and multi-feature quantum convolution with average and Euclidean pooling and thus adapting the CNN structure to a variational quantum algorithm (VQA). Average pooling is based on the quantum Haar transform (QHT) and Euclidean pooling is based on partial quantum measurement. The experimental work was conducted using multidimensional data to validate the correctness and demonstrate the scalability of the proposed method utilizing both noisy and noise-free quantum simulations. We evaluated the MQCC model with reference to reported work on state-of-the-art quantum simulators from IBM Quantum and Xanadu using a variety of standard ML datasets. The experimental results showed favorable characteristics of our proposed techniques compared to existing work with respect to a number of quantitative metrics such as the number of training parameters, cross-entropy loss, classification accuracy, circuit depth, and quantum gate count.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) approaches that could learn from large data sources have been identified as useful tools to support clinicians in their decisional process; AI and ML implementations have had a rapid acceleration during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. However, many ML classifiers are “black box” to the final user, since their underlying reasoning process is often obscure. Additionally, the performance of such models suffer from poor generalization ability in presence of dataset shift. Here, we present a comparison between an explainable-by-design (“white box”) model (Bayesian Network (BN)) versus a black-box model (Random Forest), both studied with the aim to support clinicians of Policlinico San Matteo University Hospital in Pavia (Italy) during the triage of COVID-19 patients. Our aim is to evaluate whether the BN predictive performances are comparable with those of a widely used but less explainable ML model such as Random Forest and to test the generalization ability of the ML models across different waves of the pandemic.

Ensuring optimal performance and reliability in rotor-bearing systems is crucial for industrial applications. Imbalance and shaft bow in these systems can lead to decreased efficiency and increased vibrations. Early detection and mitigation of a rotor’s faults are essential, and model-based fault identification has gained much attention in the manufacturing industry for years. Over the past two decades, however, the development of fault diagnosis rules with data-driven and artificial intelligence (AI) has become a trend, and in the foreseeable future, AI combined with big data will become mainstream. Nevertheless, the critical role of rotating machinery in manufacturing introduces a challenge, as the availability of fault data is often insufficient. This limitation renders the establishment of diagnostic rules using data-driven methods and AI technologies impractical. In light of these challenges, this study proposes a novel hybrid approach, that combines a physical model with machine learning (ML) techniques for the diagnosis of multi-faults (imbalance and shaft-bow demonstrated) in a Jeffcott rotor. To overcome the lack of real-world faulted, labeled datasets, a physics-based Jeffcott rotor model is first derived and then used to generate abundant fault datasets for ML. Subsequently, simulated data are employed for the training of an artificial neural network (ANN), enabling the network to learn from and analyze the vast array of generated data. The results prove that a well-trained feed-forward neural network (FNN) can accurately isolate and diagnose the imbalance and shaft-bow faults using the simulated data and the real data from the Jeffcott rotor experiment. These physics-based and ML approaches prove effective particularly for multi-fault, offering new possibilities for advanced rotor system monitoring and maintenance strategies in industrial applications.

Considering that cryptocurrencies are now present in practically every financial transaction because they are widely accepted as an alternate means of making payments and exchanging currencies, academics and economists have more opportunities to study cryptocurrency prices. Over the years, investors, traders and investment banks have found it difficult to predict the closing daily price of Ethereum due to its rapid price fluctuation. The daily closing price of cryptocurrency is essential to consider when trading or investing in Ethereum. This report focuses on carrying out a comparative study of the predictive capabilities of deep machine learning algorithms with a stacking ensemble modelling framework using daily historical observations of the price of Ethereum obtained from Coindesk, tweets extracted from Twitter ranging from the 1st of August 2022 to the 8th of August 2022 and other five covariates (closing price lag1, closing price lag2, noltrend, daytype and month) engineered from the closing price of Ethereum. Seven models are used to compute the forecasts for the daily closing price of Ethereum; these are the recurrent neural network, ensemble stacked recurrent neural network, gradient boosting machine, generalized linear model, distributed random forest, deep neural networks and stacked ensemble for gradient boosting machine, generalized linear model, distributed random forest and deep neural networks. The main evaluation metric used is the mean absolute error. According to MAE, RNN forecasts outperform the other model’s forecasts in this study, producing an MAE of 0.0309.

There is a need to develop tools for mastitis management in goats and to measure the effects of milking machines on teats. Infrared thermography (IRT), as shown in cows, was a good candidate for early detection of mastitis and focusing on milking equipment and settings implicated in potential problems. The aim of this study was to test IRT to detect udder inflammation and the effects of mechanical milking on teats in relation to inflammation status, udder balance and teat shape in Alpine goats. IRT spectra were compared before and after milking in 551 goats from three commercial herds compared to their individual SCC (somatic cell count). Groundwater represents a pivotal asset in conserving natural water reservoirs for potable consumption, irrigation, and diverse industrial uses. Nevertheless, human activities intertwined with industry and agriculture contribute significantly to groundwater contamination, highlighting the critical necessity to appraise water quality for safe drinking and effective irrigation. This research primarily focused on employing the Water Quality Index (WQI) to gauge water's appropriateness for these purposes. However, the generation of an accurate WQI can prove time-intensive owing to potential errors in sub-index calculations. In response to this challenge, an artificial intelligence (AI) forecasting model was devised, aiming to streamline the process while mitigating errors. The study collected 422 data samples from Mirpurkash, a city nestled in the province of Sindh, for a comprehensive exploration of the region's WQI attributes. Furthermore, the study probed into unraveling the interdependencies amidst variables in the physiochemical analysis of water. Diverse machine learning classifiers were employed for WQI prediction, with findings revealing that random forest and gradient boosting eclipsed other algorithms, achieving an accuracy rate of 99%. In close pursuit were SVM and XGBoost, registering accuracy scores of approximately 95% and 93%, respectively, while KNN and Decision Trees garnered accuracy rates of 88% and 87%, respectively. In addition to WQI prediction, the study conducted an uncertainty analysis of the models using the R-factor, providing insights into the reliability and consistency of predictions. This dual approach, combining accurate WQI prediction with uncertainty assessment, contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of water quality in Mirpurkash and enhances the reliability of decision-making processes related to groundwater utilization

The TROPOMI XCH4 data product requires rigorous cloud filtering to achieve a product accuracy of <1%. To this end, the operational XCH4 data processing has been based on SUOMI-NPP VIIRS cloud observations. However, SUOMI-NPP is nearing at the end of its operational life and has encountered malfunctions in 2022 and 2023. In this study, we introduce a novel machine learning cloud clearing approach based on a random forest classifier (RFC). The RFC is trained on collocated TROPOMI and SUOMI-NPP VIIRS data to emulate VIIRS-like cloud clearing. After training, cloud masking requires only TROPOMI data, and so becomes operationally independent of SUOMI-NPP. We demonstrate the RFC approach by applying cloud clearing to operational TROPOMI XCH4 data for August 2022, a period in which VIIRS was not operational. For validation, we analyze the TROPOMI XCH4 data at 12 TCCON stations. Comparison of cloud clearing using the RFC and the original VIIRS method reveals excellent agreement with a similar station-to-station bias (-7.4 ppb versus -5.6 ppb), a similar standard deviation of the station-to-station bias (11.6 ppb versus 12 ppb), and the same Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.9. Remarkably, the RFC cloud clearing provides a slightly higher volume of data (2182 versus 2035 daily means) and appears to have fewer outliers. Since November 21, 2023, the RFC approach is part of ESA’s operational processing chain. For now the default practice is to utilize SNPP-VIIRS when accessible. Only in cases where VIIRS data is unavailable do we resort to the RFC cloud mask.

The fast-paced evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), large language model (LLM) applications, and generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) have set the stage for improved and autonomous project scheduling models. This study demonstrates how project scheduling can be enhanced by employing building information modeling (BIM) to predict reliable schedules for each project element. The research is based on design science research (DSR) methodology and focus group discussion. The proposed system consists of six components: project analyzer, data warehouse, activity identifier and sequencing, activity magnitude and direct cost calculator, activity duration calculator, and schedule analyzer. Unlike other solutions, the proposed solution sequences activities based on an ML model rather than constraint matrices. The proposed solution thus enhances project performance through proactive planning and risk management. Integrating the autonomous project scheduling solution with the other components of an autonomous project management system would surmount schedule challenges and would result in greater cost efficiency and fewer delays.

In this study, we introduce a neural-learning based approach for the early detection of Parkinson Disease using DaT SPECT imaging, a promising technique in neurodegenerative disease diagnosis. Leveraging the advanced capabilities of deep learning, we developed a convolutional neural network model based on the Inception V3 architecture, which has been enhanced by modulating custom layers to fine-tune the model specifically for the analysis of DaT SPECT images. The imaging dataset was obtained through the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), and the model was trained to classify whether a patient had Parkinson Disease through a binary classification of their DaT SPECT Scan using the fine-tuned InceptionV3 model. This specialized adaptation allows for more accurate and nuanced interpretation of the scans, a crucial factor in early and reliable diagnosis of Parkinsonian syndromes. Our model underwent rigorous hyperparameter tuning, focusing on learning rates, the number of neurons in the dense layer, and dropout rates, to ensure optimal performance. Remarkably, the proposed model demonstrated a significant improvement in accuracy, achieving 74.65%, compared to a standard Sequential Model, which only reached an accuracy of 51.41%. Diagnosis of Parkinson Disease through DaT SPECT Scans is a promising approach not only as a more effective diagnostic tool but also as a beacon for future research in the application of deep learning to medical imaging for neurodegenerative diseases. By building layers on the InceptionV3 Architecture, we achieve a higher accuracy on DaT SPECT Scan diagnosis and pave the way for automated diagnosis of patients with Parkinson Disease, allowing for easier medical accessibility and paving the way for advancements in early diagnosis and personalized medicine strategies for Parkinson's disease and related disorders.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations present a sophisticated nano-scale computational approach that can play a critical role in material design for next generation batteries. One critical piece of information needed for MD simulations is the non-bonded potential parameters, which can be obtained through quantum mechanics (QM) calculations or experimental methods. However, experimental data is not available for exploratory and novel materials to derive the potential parameters. Also, the QM approach needs significant computational power and is too time consuming for large systems. On the other hand, current Artificial Intelligence techniques are faster, but they cannot be generalized across molecules and properties. As a result, there is a significant barrier to discovering and exploring new materials. Overcoming this barrier, in this work, we propose a Machine Learning (ML) based technique that can learn inter-atomic potential parameters for various particle-particle interactions employing QM calculations. This ML model can be used as an alternative for QM calculations for predicting non-bonded interactions in a computationally efficient manner. Using these parameters as input to MD simulations, we can predict a diverse range of properties, enabling researchers to design new and novel materials suitable for various applications in the absence of experimental data. We employ our ML-based technique to learn the Buckingham potential, a non-bonded interatomic potential. Subsequently, we utilize these predicted values to compute the densities of four distinct molecules, achieving an accuracy exceeding 93%. This serves as a strong demonstration of the efficacy of our proposed approach.

Advances in biomimetic triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have significant implications for electronic skin (e-skin) and human-machine interaction (HMI). Emphasizing the need to mimic complex functionalities of natural systems, particularly human skin, TENGs leverage triboelectricity and electrostatic induction to bridge the gap in traditional electronic devices' responsiveness and adaptability. The exploration begins with an overview of TENGs' operational principles and modes, transitioning into structural and material biomimicry inspired by plant and animal models, proteins, fibers, and hydrogels. Key applications in tactile sensing, motion sensing, and intelligent control within e-skins and HMI systems are highlighted, showcasing TENGs' potential in revolutionizing wearable technologies and robotic systems. This review also addresses the challenges in performance enhancement, scalability, and system integration of TENGs. It points to future research directions, including optimizing energy conversion efficiency, discovering new materials, and employing micro-nanostructuring techniques for enhanced triboelectric charges and energy conversion. The scalability and cost-effectiveness of TENG production, pivotal for mainstream application, are discussed along with the need for versatile integration with various electronic systems. The review underlines the significance of making bioinspired TENGs more accessible and applicable in everyday technology, focusing on compatibility, user comfort, and durability. Conclusively, it underscores the role of bioinspired TENGs in advancing wearable technology and interactive systems, indicating a bright future for these innovations in practical applications.

The power system has rapidly grown and expanded over the past decades and has been experiencing major changes and challenges. The increase in energy demand and the modern advancements in the smart grid, such as solar and wind energies and electric vehicles, have led to complexity and complications for utilities. A further layer of complexity and difficulty was added by the rapid expansion of behind-the-meter (BTM) photovoltaic (PV) systems with various designs and characteristic features. The rapid increase and the invisible solar power (BTM) have led to fluctuations in power grid stability and reliability and to inefficiency. Accurate forecasting of load generation will help to assure optimal planning, minimize the negative effects of the PV systems, and minimize the operational and maintenance costs. The authors propose a solution that uses combinations of K-means clustering with neural network machine learning models, AMI real-world PV load generation, and weather data to forecast the generation load at customer locations to achieve a 2.49% error between actual and predicted generation load.

In recent years, Neural networks are increasingly deployed in various fields to learn complex patterns and make accurate predictions. However, designing an effective neural network model is a challenging task that requires careful consideration of various factors, including architecture, optimization method, and regularization technique. This paper aims to comprehensively overview the state-of-the-art artificial neural network (ANN) generation and highlight key challenges and opportunities in machine learning applications. It provides a critical analysis of current neural network model design methodologies, focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. Also, it explores the use of different learning approaches, including convolutional neural networks (CNN), deep neural networks (DNN), and recurrent neural networks (RNN) in image recognition, natural language processing, and time series analysis. Besides, it discusses the benefits of choosing the ideal values for the different components of ANN, such as the number of Input/output layers, hidden layers number, activation function type, epochs number, and model type selection, which help improve the model performance and generalization. Furthermore, it identifies some common pitfalls and limitations of existing design methodologies, such as overfitting, lack of interpretability, and computational complexity. Finally, it proposes some directions for future research, such as developing more efficient and interpretable neural network architectures, improving the scalability of training algorithms, and exploring the potential of new paradigms, such as Spiking Neural Networks, quantum neural networks, and neuromorphic computing.

Soil organic matter is an important component that reflects soil fertility and promotes plant growth. The soil of typical Chinese tea plantations was used as the research object in this work, and by combining soil hyperspectral data and image texture characteristics, a quantitative prediction model of soil organic matter based on machine vision and hyperspectral imaging technology was built. Three methods, standard normalized variate (SNV), multisource scattering correction (MSC) and smoothing, were first used to preprocess the spectra. After that, random frog (RF), variable combination population analysis (VCPA) and variable combination population analysis and iterative retained information variable algorithm (VCPA-IRIV) algorithms were used to extract the characteristic bands. Finally, the quantitative prediction model of nonlinear support vector regression (SVR) and linear partial least squares regression (PLSR) for soil organic matter was established by combining nine color features and five texture features of hyperspectral images. The outcomes demonstrate that, in comparison to single spectral data, fusion data may greatly increase the performance of the prediction model, with MSC+VCPA-IRIV+SVR (R2C=0.995, R2P=0.986, RPD=8.155) being the optimal approach combination. This work offers excellent justification for more investigation into nondestructive methods for determining the amount of organic matter in soil.

Machine Learning (ML) has proved its capabilities in different scientific and industrial fields, but it needs to be further investigated in the construction industry for practical utilization. One of the use cases of ML is delegating the structural calculation process. In this study, to discuss ML’s capabilities in performing the work of a structural designer, calculations of concrete sections based on ACI (American Concrete Institute) as a case study were selected. At first, all manual design steps and standard considerations for a concrete beam section were coded parametrically in MATLAB. After comparing with structural design references to prove the accuracy of codes in calculating shear and bending capacities, the parametric results were used as initial data (Look−up table) for training the ML operators. Regarding different types of ML techniques and as a comparison between them, in the next steps, all essential codes for Fuzzy Logic (FL), Neural Network (NN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) were coded in the same platform. The performance of the three coded ML operators to replace (delegate) standard calculations compared to direct calculations was individually investigated and displayed through parametric examples. After initial examples, the influences of the number of parameters and size of the Look−up table on the accuracy of each operator were discussed. The study concluded that although all three operators can delegate the standard calculation, the precision of the results differs considerably. In case of the desirable size of the Look−up table, ANFIS operators can represent the standard calculations with a different number of parameters and entirely high precision.

Stock market prediction is a challenging task to perform, as we know the fluctuations that take place in the market makes it versatile and hard to predict the prices. In this research, we have explored the power of usage of hybrid ensemble algorithms to improve the predictive accuracy in the stock market forecasting. Our research comprises construction and evaluation of diverse hybrid models using different algorithms. The methodology presented in the paper involves comprehensive data preparation, feature engineering, and model normalization. Evaluating the different hybrid models, one stands out distinctly: LSTM (long short-term memory networks) + GRU (Gated recurrent units) + Conv1D (one-dimensional convolutional layer) hybrid. It illustrated its potential to revolutionize decision-making tools for investors and financial analysts in stock market analytics. The harmonious integration of algorithms not only underscores the effectiveness of hybrid modeling but also beckons for further exploration within the ever-evolving domain of predictive modeling, driven by the pursuit of precision and accuracy. This model shows a remarkable accuracy metrics including a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.95, a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 2.1222, a Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 1.52, and a R-squared (R2) score of 0.9982.

This paper presents a novel approach for the recognition of multiple sclerosis (MS) using wavelet entropy and a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-based neural network. MS is a complex neurological disorder with diverse clinical manifestations, often challenging to diagnose accurately. In this study, we leverage wavelet entropy (WE) as a feature extraction method to capture intricate patterns within brain imaging data. These extracted features are then employed to train a neural network model optimized through PSO to enhance classification accuracy. Experimental results on a dataset comprising MS and healthy control subjects demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, viz., WE-PSONN, which achieves a sensitivity of 91.95±1.15, a specificity of 92.36±0.88, a precision of 92.28±0.88, an accuracy of 92.16±0.90. The combination of advanced signal processing techniques and machine learning optimization holds promise for improving the early diagnosis and management of MS, offering potential benefits to both patients and healthcare providers.

The management and classification of solid waste is one of the most important challenges around the world, in order to sustain economic growth and preserve the environment. The objective is to propose the use of Smart Ecological Points as a strategy to address the problem related to the solid waste management system at the source, which has become one of the biggest problems globally and Colombia is no exception. The article describes the current state of the problem in the country and in turn, presents the possibility of developing a prototype corresponding to a low-cost Smart Ecological Point supported by the use of an experimental capacitive sensor and Machine Learning algorithms, which will reduce the time necessary for the classification of recyclable and non recyclable waste, minimizing the health risks and increasing the percentage of waste that can be reused, by reducing the probability of being contaminated at the source, an aspect that is very common when done manually. According to the results obtained, it was evident that the proposed prototype made an adequate classification of waste, generating the possibility of being manufactured with existing technology in the environment, in order to promote adequate waste classification at the source.

Malaria is one of the life-threatening disease caused by the Anopheles mosquitoes affecting the human red blood cells. It is the global health concern which is quite common in tropical as well as sub-tropical parts of the World. Therefore, it is an important to have an effective computer aided system in place for early detection and treatment. State of the art machine learning techniques are used to detect the infected malaria cells from the pool of images. As the visual heterogeneity of the malaria dataset is highly complex and dynamic, therefore higher number of images are needed to train the machine learning models effectively. However, hospitals as well as medical institutions do not share the medical image data for collaboration due to general data protection regulation (GDPR) and data protection act (DPA). To overcome this collaborative challenge, our research is inspired to use the real-time medical image data while using the framework of federated learning (FL) framework that will ensure the data privacy while mutual collaboration of hospitals and medical institutes. We have used the state of the art machine learning models that include the Resnet50 and densenet in a federated learning framework. We have experimented both models in different settings and our preliminary results showed that the densenet model performed better in accuracy (75%) in contrast to resnet50 (72%) while considering 8 clients, while the trend is observed common in 4 clients with the similar accuracy of 94% and 6 client showed that the densenet model performed quite well with the accuracy of 92% while resnet50 achieving only 72%.

Background: Machine learning can analyze vast amounts of data and make predictions for events in the future. Our group created machine learning models for vital sign predictions. To transport the information of these predictions without numbers and numerical values and make them easily usable for human caregivers, we aimed to integrate them into the Philips Visual-Patient-avatar, an avatar-based visualization of patient monitoring. Methods: We conducted a computer-based simulation study with 70 participants in three European university hospitals. We validated the vital sign prediction visualizations by testing their identification by anesthesiologists and intensivists. Each prediction visualization consisted of a condition (e.g., blood pressure low) and an urgency (a visual indication of the timespan in which the condition is expected to occur). To obtain qualitative user feedback, we also conducted standardised interviews and derived statements that participants later rated in an online survey. Results: The mixed logistic regression model showed 77.9% (95%CI 73.2-82.0%) correct identification of prediction visualizations (i.e. condition and urgency both correctly identified) and 93.8% (95%CI 93.7-93.8%) for conditions only (i.e. without considering urgencies). Forty-nine of 70 participants completed the online survey. The online survey participants agreed that the prediction visualizations were fun to use (32/49, 65.3%), and that they could imagine working with them in the future (30/49, 61.2%). They also agreed that identifying the urgencies was difficult (32/49, 65.3%). Conclusions: This study found that care providers correctly identified >90% of the conditions (i.e. without considering urgencies). The accuracy of identification decreased when considering urgencies in addition to conditions. Therefore, in future development of the technology, we will focus on either only displaying conditions (without urgencies) or improve the visualizations of urgency to enhance usability for human users.

In this research, we present a comprehensive methodology to categorize perfumes based on their fragrance profiles and subsequently aid in creating innovative odoriferous molecules using advanced neural networks. Drawing from data on Parfumo and the Good Scents Company webpage (Parfumo, 2008; The Good Scents Company, 2021), the study employs sophisticated web scraping techniques to gather diverse perfume attributes. Following this, a k-means algorithm is applied for perfume clustering, paving the way for recommending similar scents to consumers. The process then bridges customer preferences to molecular design by incorporating their feedback into generating new molecules via graph neural networks (GNNs). Through converting the Simple Molecular Input Line Entry System (SMILES) representation into graph structures, the GNN facilitates the creation of new molecular designs attuned to consumer desires. The proposed approach offers promising avenues for consumers to pinpoint similar perfume choices, incorporating feedback, and for manufacturers to conceptualize new fragrant molecules with a high likelihood of market resonance.

Landslide is one of the most common geological disasters in China, which is characterized by suddenness and uncertainty, and it is difficult to realize accurate identification, early warning and forecasting of landslide disaster by conventional means. With the development of high-resolution remote sensing satellites and InSAR surface deformation monitoring technology, the traditional means of landslide monitoring data sources are limited, and there is a lack of effective methods to excavate the characteristics of the spatial distribution of landslide hazards and their triggering factors and other issues. In this paper, the area extending 10 km outside the VII isobar of the Gengma earthquake is taken as the study area, and 13 evaluation factors are screened out by integrating the factors of InSAR surface deformation, topography and geological environment, and the Bayesian Optimized Convolutional Neural Network (BO-CNN) is used for the evaluation of landslide susceptibility, and the BO-RF and PSO-SVM models are selected for the comparative analysis. The model accuracy evaluation was carried out by three indexes: ROC curve, AUC value and FR value, in which the ROC curves of PSO-SVM, BO-RF and BO-CNN were all close to the upper-left corner of the corner, and the AUC values were 0.9388, 0.9529, and 0.9535, respectively, and the FR value of landslide in the high susceptibility area of BO-CNN was as high as 14.9, and was higher than that of PSO-SVM and BO-RF, respectively. SVM and BO-RF model is 4.55 and 3.69 higher, the experimental results show that the BO-CNN model used in this paper has a better effect in landslide susceptibility evaluation, and the research results of the local government's disaster prevention and mitigation measures are of great significance.

In addition to identifying and prosecuting cyber attackers, attack attribution activities can provide valuable information guiding the defenders’ security procedures and giving them greater confidence in incident response and remediation. However, technical analysis involved in cyberattack attribution requires high skills, experience, access to up-to-date Cyber Threat Intelligence, and significant investigators’ effort. Attribution results are not always reliable, and skilful attackers often work hard to cover their traces and mislead or confuse investigators. In this article, we present a tool designed to support technical attack attribution and implemented as a machine learning model extending the OpenCTI platform. We also discuss the tool’s performance in the investigation of a recent cyberattack.

Surface defect detection is a crucial step in the process of automotive wheel production. However, the task possesses challenges due to complex background and a wide range of defect types. In order to detect the defects on the wheel surface accurately and quickly, this paper proposes a YOLOv5-based algorithm for automotive wheel surface defect detection. The algorithm trains and tests the YOLOv5s model using the self-created automotive wheel surface defect dataset, which contains four kinds of defects: linear, dotted, sludge, pinhole. The extensive experimental results demonstrate that the deep learning network trained by our method can achieve an average accuracy of 71.7% and 57.14 FPS. Our findings prove that this detection algorithm performs better than other common target detection algorithms and meets the real-time requirements of industrial applications.

Coastal areas situated at lower elevations are becoming more vulnerable to flooding as a result of the accelerating global sea level rise. As the sea level rises, so does the groundwater. Barriers designed to shield against marine flooding do not provide protection against flooding caused by rising groundwater. Despite the increasing threat of groundwater flooding, there is limited knowledge about the relationship between sea level rise and groundwater fluctuations. This hinders the ability to adequately consider sea level rise induced groundwater flooding in adaptation initiatives. This study aims to investigate how local groundwater in Juelsminde, Denmark, responds to changes in sea level and to evaluate the predictability of these changes using a machine learning model. The influence of the sea on the shallow groundwater level has been investigated using six groundwater loggers located between 45 and 210 m from the coast. An initial manual analysis of the data revealed a systematic delay in the rise of water levels from the coast to inland areas, with a delay of approximately 15–17 hours per 50 m of distance. Subsequently, a support vector regression model was used to predict groundwater levels 24 hours into the future. This study shows how the groundwater level in Juelsminde is affected by sea level fluctuations. Results suggest a need for increased emphasis on this topic.

Shallow landslides pose serious threats to human existence and economic development, especially in the Himalayan areas. Landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) is a proven way for minimizing the hazard and risk of landslides. Modeling as an essential step, various algorithms have been applied to LSM. In this study, information value (IV) and logistic regression (LR) were selected as representatives of the conventional algorithms, categorical boosting (CatBoost) and conventional neural networks (CNN) as the advanced algorithms, for LSM in Yadong county, and their performance was compared. To begin with, 496 historical landslide events were compiled into a landslide inventory map, followed by a list of 11 conditioning factors, forming a data set. Secondly, the data set was randomly divided into two parts, 80% of which was used for modeling and 20% for validation. Finally, the area under the curve (AUC) and statistical metrics were applied to validate and compare the performance of the models. The results showed that the CNN model performed the best (AUC 0.974 and accuracy=93.3%), while the LR model performed the worst (AUC 0.974 and accuracy=93.3%) and CatBoost model performed better (AUC 0.974 and accuracy=93.3%). Besides, the LSM constructed by the CNN model did a more reasonable prediction of the distribution of susceptible areas. As for feature selection, did a more detailed analysis of conditioning factors but the results were uncertain. The result analyzed by GI may be more reliable but fluctuates with the amount of data. The conclusion reveals that the accuracy of LSM can be further improved with the advancement of algorithms, by determining more representative features, which serve as a more effective guide for land use planning in the study area or other highlands where landslides are frequent.

In order to realize the accurate measurement of wearable sphygmomanometer, this paper selects the micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensor with small size, low cost and high accuracy, and proposes a flexible packaging method combining Parylene and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The flexible packaging sensor protects the sensor chip while ensuring the comfort of the measured person. It can be worn for a long time, and the encapsulated sensor has good accuracy and sensitivity. At the same time, the encapsulated MEMS pressure sensor was used to collect good pulse signals and extract multiple pulse wave characteristic parameters. A blood pressure measurement method based on the combination of arterial tonometry method and pulse wave parameters method was proposed, and multiple machine learning algorithms were compared and analyzed to select the algorithm model with the smallest error as the optimal regressor. The experimental results show that the blood pressure measurement method combining the arterial tonometry method and the pulse wave parameters method can effectively improve the accuracy of blood pressure measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that the combination of arterial tonometry and pulse wave parameter methods can effectively enhance the accuracy of blood pressure measurement, with the random forest model serving as the optimal regressor. The average deviation between the systolic blood pressure measured by our self-made sphygmomanometer and the commercial sphygmomanometer was 0.86mmHg, with a standard deviation of 4.04mmHg. The average deviation of diastolic blood pressure was 0.63mmHg, with a standard deviation of 5.15mmHg, meeting the AAMI standard for clinical practice.

Importance and need for cyber security have increased in folds since a decade. Indirectly, the country’s security depends on the country’s cyber-physical systems. Attackers are becoming more innovative, and attacks are becoming undetectable, causing huge risks to the systems. In this scenario, intelligent and evolving detection methods should be introduced to replace the basic and outworn ones. This article discusses about new-age intelligence and smart techniques dealing with artificial intelligence (AI) models. Artificial intelligence for cyber security is reviewed, and the performance of machine learning models (ML) and deep learning (DL) models are analysed. A real-time case study of stealthy local covert attacks with false data injection attacks is implemented on the DC-DC converter. A deep learning model is designed to mitigate cyber attacks, and its performance is evaluated.

Machine learning (ML) is widely used in the field of crop-growing information identification based on high-resolution remote sensing images. With Baoying County in Jiangsu Province, China, as the study area, this paper used Sentinel-2 images during the winter wheat growth period to construct its spectral, textural, and topographic features during its growth period and proposes a winter wheat-growing area extraction method based on the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, which was compared with traditional ML algorithms such as the support vector machine (SVM), classification and regression tree (CART), and random forest (RF) algorithms. The results indicated that (1) a winter wheat-growing area identification model based on the XGBoost algorithm was successfully constructed based on Sentinel-2 images, considering 27 spectral, textural, and topographic features; (2) the constructed model could effectively extract winter wheat in the study area with an overall accuracy of 93.43% and only a small error compared with the actual winter wheat-growing area in Baoying County, meeting the accuracy requirement for crop identification in the study area; and (3) the deep learning algorithm XGBoost outperformed the three traditional ML algorithms, among which the RF algorithm was better than the SVM and CART algorithms, both of which had poor identification performance and a large error compared with the actual growing area. This paper provides a scientific basis for the accurate extraction of winter wheat-growing areas and further research on winter wheat growth monitoring and yield estimation.

Machine learning forks into three main branches such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning where reinforcement learning is much potential to artificial intelligence (AI) applications because it solves real problems by progressive process in which possible solutions are improved and finetuned continuously. The progressive approach, which reflects ability of adaptation, is appropriate to the real world where most events occur and change continuously and unexpectedly. Moreover, data is getting too huge for supervised learning and unsupervised learning to draw valuable knowledge from such huge data at one time. Bayesian optimization (BO) models an optimization problem as a probabilistic form called surrogate model and then directly maximizes an acquisition function created from such surrogate model in order to maximize implicitly and indirectly the target function for finding out solution of the optimization problem. A popular surrogate model is Gaussian process regression model. The process of maximizing acquisition function is based on updating posterior probability of surrogate model repeatedly, which is improved after every iteration. Taking advantages of acquisition function or utility function is also common in decision theory but the semantic meaning behind BO is that BO solves problems by progressive and adaptive approach via updating surrogate model from a small piece of data at each time, according to ideology of reinforcement learning. Undoubtedly, BO is a reinforcement learning algorithm with many potential applications and thus it is surveyed in this research with attention to its mathematical ideas. Moreover, the solution of optimization problem is important to not only applied mathematics but also AI.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe personality disorder whose neural bases are still unclear. Indeed, previous studies reported inconsistent findings concerning alterations in cortical and subcortical areas. In the present study we applied for the first time an unsupervised machine learning approach known as mCCA+jICA, in combination with a supervised machine learning approach known as Random Forest, to possibly find covarying GM-WM circuits that separate BPD from controls and that are also predictive of this diagnosis. To this aim, we analyzed the structural images of patients with BPD and matched HCs. Results showed that two GM-WM covarying circuits, including basal ganglia, amygdala, and portions of the temporal lobes and of the orbitofrontal cortex, correctly classified BPD against HC. Notably, these circuits are affected by specific child traumatic experiences (emotional and physical neglect, and physical abuse) and predict symptoms severity in the interpersonal and impulsivity domains. These results support that BPD is characterized by anomalies in GM and WM circuits related to early traumatic experiences and specific symptoms.

In this study, we demonstrate how the incorporation of appropriate feature engineering together with the selection of a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm that best suits the available dataset, leads to the development of a predictive model for transformation temperatures that can be applied to a wide range of shape memory alloys. We develop a gradient boosting ML surrogate model capable of predicting Martensite Start, Martensite Finish, Austenite Start, and Austenite Finish transformation temperatures with an average accuracy of more than 95% by explicitly taking care of potential distribution changes when modeling different alloy systems. We included heat treatment, rolling, extrusion processing parameters, and alloy system categorical features in the model input features to achieve more accurate and realistic results. In addition, using Shapley values, which are calculated based on the average marginal contribution of features to all possible coalitions, this study was able to gain insights into the governing features and their effect on predicted transformation temperatures, providing a unique opportunity to examine the critical parameters and features in martensite transformation temperatures.

Accurate retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis (LNM) prediction in early-stage testicular germ cell tumours (TGCT) harbours the potential to significantly reduce over- or undertreatment and treatment-related morbidity in this group of young patients as an important survivorship imperative. We investigated the role of computed tomography (CT) radiomics models integrating clinical predictors for the individualized prediction of LNM in early-stage TGCT. Ninety-one patients with surgically proven testicular germ cell tumours and contrast-enhanced CT were included in this retrospective study. Dedicated radiomics software was used to segment 273 retroperitoneal lymph nodes and extract features. After feature selection, radiomics-based machine learning models were developed to predict LN metastasis. The robustness of the procedure was controlled by 10-fold cross-validation. Using multivariable logistic regression modelling, we developed three prediction models: A radiomics-only model, a clinical-only model and a combined radiomics-clinical model. The models' performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Finally, decision curve analysis was performed to estimate the clinical usefulness of the predictive model. The radiomics-only model for predicting lymph node metastasis reached a greater discrimination power than the clinical-only model, with an AUC of 0.84 (± 0.17; 95% CI ) vs 0.60 (± 0.22; 95% CI) in our study cohort. The combined model integrating clinical risk factors and selected radiomics features outperformed the clinical-only and the radiomics-only prediction models and showed good discrimination with an area under the curve of 0.94 ( ± 0.10; 95% CI). The decision curve analysis demonstrated the clinical usefulness of our proposed combined model. The presented combined CT-based radiomics-clinical model represents an exciting non-invasive prediction tool for individualized prediction of LN metastasis in testicular germ cell tumours. Multi-centre validation is required to generate high-quality evidence for its clinical application.

Predicting Length of Stay (LoS) and understanding its underlying factors is essential to minimize the risk of hospital-acquired conditions, improve financial, operational, and clinical outcomes, and to better manage future pandemics. The purpose of this study is to forecast patients’ LoS using a deep learning model and analyze cohorts of risk factors minimizing or maximizing LoS. We employed various pre-processing techniques, SMOTE-N to balance data, and Tab-Transformer model to forecast LoS. Finally, Apriori algorithm was applied to analyze cohorts of risk factors influencing LoS at hospital. The Tab-Transformer outperformed the base Machine Learning models with an F1-score (.92), precision (.83), recall (.93), and accuracy (.73) for discharge dataset, and F1-score (.84), precision (.75), recall (.98), and accuracy (.77) for deceased dataset. The association mining algorithm was able to identify significant risk factors/indicators belonging to lab, X-Ray, and clinical data such as elevated LDH, and D-Dimer, lymphocytes count, and comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes responsible for extending patients LoS. It also reveals what treatments has reduced the symptoms of COVID-19 patients leading to reduction in LoS particularly when no vaccines or medication such as Paxlovid were available.

The advancement in network security threats led to the development of new Intrusion Detection Systems(IDS) that rely on deep learning algorithms known as deep IDS. Along with other systems based on deep learning, deep IDS suffer from adversarial examples: malicious inputs aiming to change the prediction of a machine learning/deep learning model. Protecting deep learning against adversarial examples remains an open challenge. In this paper, we propose “NIDS-Defend” a framework to enhance the robustness of Network IDS against adversarial attacks. Our framework is composed of two layers: a statistical test and a classifier that together detect adversarial examples in real-time. The detection process consists of two steps: (1) flagging flows that contain adversarial examples with a statistical test, and (2) extracting individual adversarial examples in the previously flagged flows with a classifier. Our approach is evaluated on binary IDS with the NSL-KDD dataset. To generate adversarial examples, the crafting methods used are (1) Boundary attack and (2) HopSkipJumpAttack. We investigate the vulnerabilities of a Network IDS against adversarial examples, then apply our defense. The statistical test can confidently distinguish adversarial flows with more than 95% accuracy, and the classifier detects individual adversarial examples with more than 80% accuracy. We also show that our framework detects adversarial examples crafted by an adversary aware of the defense and confirm the effectiveness of our solution against adversarial attacks.

Structure–function relationships in proteins have been one of the crucial scientific topics. Heme proteins have diverse and pivotal biological functions. Therefore, clarifying their structure–function correlation is significant to understand their functional mechanism and is informative for various fields of science. In this study, we constructed convolutional neural network models for predicting protein functions from the tertiary structures of heme-binding sites (active sites) of heme proteins to examine the structure–function correlation. As a result, we succeeded in the classification of oxygen-binding protein (OB), oxidoreductase (OR), proteins with both functions (OB–OR), and electron transport protein (ET) with high accuracy. Although the misclassification rate for OR and ET was high, the rates between OB and ET and between OB and OR were almost zero, indicating that the prediction model works well between protein groups with very different functions. However, predicting the function of proteins modified with amino acid mutation(s) remains a challenge. Our findings indicate a structure–function correlation in the active site of heme proteins. This study is expected to be applied to the prediction of more detailed protein functions such as catalytic reactions.

The quality of yarn is essential in the control of the fabrics processes. There is some commercial equipment that measures the quality of yarn based on sensors, of different types, used for collecting data about some yarn characteristic parameters. The existing equipment, for the above-mentioned purpose, is characterized by its high size and cost, and for allowing the analysis of only few yarn quality parameters. Thus, this paper presents the development and results obtained with the design of a mechatronic prototype integrating a computer vision system that allows, among other parameters, the analysis and classification, in real time, of the hairs of the yarn using artificial intelligence techniques. The system also determines other characteristics inherent to the yarn quality analysis, such as: linear mass, diameter, volume, twist orientation, twist step, average mass deviation, coefficient of variation, hairiness coefficient, average hairiness deviation and standard hairiness deviation, as well as performs spectral analysis. A comparison of the obtained results with the designed system and a commercial equipment was performed validating the undertaken methodology.

Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) devices and applications have rapidly expanded worldwide due to their benefits in improving the business environment, industrial environment, and people's daily lives. However, the IoT devices are not immune to malicious network traffic, which causes potential negative consequences and sabotages IoT operating devices. Therefore, developing a method for screening network traffic is necessary to detect and classify malicious activity to mitigate its negative impacts. Therefore, this research proposes a predictive machine learning model to detect and classify network activity in an IoT system. Specifically, our model distinguishes between normal and anomaly network activity. Furthermore, it classifies network traffic into five categories, normal, Mirai attack, denial of service (DoS) attack, Scan attack, and man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack. Five supervised learning models were implemented to characterize their performance in detecting and classifying network activities for IoT systems. This includes models shallow neural networks (SNN), decision trees (DT), bagging trees (BT), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (kNN). The learning models were evaluated on a new and broad dataset for IoT attacks, the IoTID20 dataset. Besides, a deep feature engineering process was applied to the dataset to improve the accuracy of the learning models. Our experimental evaluation exhibited an accuracy of 100% recorded for the detection using all implemented models and an accuracy of 99.4%-99.9% recorded for the classification process.

Computer-aided image diagnostics (CAD) have been used in many fields of diagnostic medicine. It relies heavily on classical computer vision and artificial intelligence. Quantum neural network (QNN) has been introduced by many researchers around the world and presented recently by research corporations such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM. In this paper, the investigation of the validity of using the QNN algorithm for machine-based breast cancer detection was performed. To validate the learnability of the QNN, a series of learnability tests were performed alongside with classical convolutional neural network (CCNN). QNN is built using the Cirq library to perform the assimilation of quantum computation on classical computers. Series of investigations were performed to study the learnability characteristics of QNN and CCNN under the same computational conditions. The comparison was performed for real Mammogram data sets. The investigations showed success in terms of recognizing the data and training. Our work shows better performance of QNN in terms of successfully training and producing a valid model for smaller data set compared to CCNN.

Recent years have witnessed a rapid growth of code-reuse attacks in advance persistent threats and cyberspace crimes. Carefully crafted code-reuse exploits circumvent modern protection mechanisms and hijack the execution flow of a program to perform expected functionalities by chaining together existing codes. The sophistication and intrication of code-reuse exploits hinder the scrutinization and dissection on them. Although the previous literature has introduced some feasible approaches, effectiveness and reliability in practical applications remain severe challenges. To address this issue, we propose Horus, a data-driven framework for effective and reliable detection on code-reuse exploits. In order to raise the effectiveness against underlying noises, we comprehensively leverage the strengths of time-series and frequency-domain analysis, and propose a learning-based detector that synthesizes the contemporary twofold features. Then we employ a lightweight interpreter to speculatively and tentatively translate the suspicious bytes to open the black box and enhance the reliability and interpretability. Additionally, a functionality-preserving data augmentation is adopted to increase the diversity of limited training data and raise the generality for real-world deployment. Comparative experiments and ablation studies are conducted on a dataset composed of real-world instances to verify and prove the prevalence of Horus. The experimental results illustrate that Horus outperform existing methods on the identification of code-reuse exploits from data stream with an acceptable overhead. Horus does not rely on any dynamic executions and can be easily integrated into existing defense systems. Moreover, Horus is able to provide tentative interpretations about attack semantics irrespective of target program, which further improve system's effectiveness and reliability.

Background: Digital clinical measures collected via various digital sensing technologies such as smartphones, smartwatches, wearables, ingestible, and implantable are increasingly used by individuals and clinicians to capture health outcomes or behavioral and physiological characteristics of individuals. Time series classification (TSC) is very commonly used in modeling digital clinical measures. While deep learning models for TSC are very common and powerful, there exist some fundamental challenges. This review presents non-deep learning models commonly used for time series classification in biomedical applications that achieve high performance. Objective: We performed a systematic review to characterize the techniques used in time series classification of digital clinical measures throughout all stages of data processing and model building. Methods: We conducted a literature search on PubMed, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases using a range of search terms to retrieve peer-reviewed articles reporting academic research on digital clinical measures in the five year period between June 2016 and June 2021. We identified and categorized research studies based on the types of classification algorithms and sensor input types. Results: We found 452 papers in total from four different databases: PubMed, IEEE, Web of Science Database, and SCOPUS. After removing duplicates and irrelevant papers, 135 articles remained for detailed review and data extraction. Among these, engineered features using time series methods that were subsequently fed into widely-used machine learning classifiers was the most commonly used technique and also most frequently achieved the best performance metrics (77 out of 135 articles). Statistical modeling (24 out of 135 articles) algorithms were the second most common and also second best classification technique. Wavelet-based classification models (8 out of 135 articles) were also common. Electroencephalogram (29 out of 135 articles) was the most common data type used as an input. Accuracy was the most commonly reported performance metric, with 67.65% of articles reporting on accuracy. In this review paper, we provide summaries of signal pre-processing methods, feature engineering and selection methods, time series models, as well as model interpretations. Importantly, we found that about 50% of the papers only report one performance metric, which may result in a skewed view of overall performance. Conclusion: While high time series classification performance has been achieved in digital clinical, physiological, or biomedical measures, no standard benchmark datasets, modeling methods, or reporting methodology exist. There is no single widely used method for time series model development or feature interpretation– many different methods have proven successful.

Pharmacophores are an established concept for the modelling of ligand-receptor interactions based on the abstract representations of stereoelectronic molecular features. They became widely popular as filters for the fast virtual screening of large compound libraries. Until today a lot of effort has been put into the development of sophisticated algorithms and strategies to increase the computational efficiency of the screening process. However, hardly any focus was put on the development of automated procedures that optimise pharmacophores towards higher discriminatory power, which until today still has to be done manually by a human expert. In the age of machine learning, the researcher has become the decision-maker at the top level, outsourcing analysis tasks and recurrent work to advanced algorithms and automation workflows. Here we propose an algorithm for the automated selection of features driving pharmacophore model quality using SAR information extracted from validated QPhAR models. By integrating the developed method into an end-to-end workflow, we present a fully automated method that is able to derive best-quality pharmacophores from a given input dataset. Finally, we show how the QPhAR-generated models can be used to guide the researcher with insights regarding (un-)favourable interactions for compounds of interest.

Understanding neck pain is an important societal issue. Kinematic data from sensors may help to gain insight on the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with neck pain through a quantitative sensorimotor assessment of one patient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential usefulness of artificial intelligence with several Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in assessing neck sensorimotor performance. Angular velocity and acceleration measured by an inertial sensor placed on the forehead during the DidRen laser test in thirty-eight acute and subacute non-specific neck pain (ANSP) patients were compared to forty-two healthy control participants (HCP). Seven supervised ML algorithms were chosen for the predictions. The most informative kinematic features were computed using Sequential Feature Selection methods. The best performing algorithm is the Linear Support Vector Machine with an accuracy of 82% and Area Under Curve of 84%. The best discriminative kinematic feature between ANSP patients and HCP is the first quartile of head pitch angular velocity. This study has shown that supervised ML algorithms could be used to classify ANSP patients and identify discriminatory kinematic features potentially useful for the clinicians in the assessment and monitoring of the neck sensorimotor performance in ANSP patients.

Ransomware is one of the most dangerous types of malware, which is frequently intended to spread through a network to damage the designated client by encrypting the client’s vulnerable data. Conventional signature-based ransomware detection technique falls behind because it can only detect known anomalies. When it comes to new and non-familiar ransomware traditional system unveils huge shortcomings. For detecting unknown patterns and sorts of new ransomware families,behavior-based anomaly detection approaches are likely to be the most efficient approach. In the wake of this alarming condition, this paper presents an ensemble classification model consisting of three widely used machine learning techniques that include Decision Tree (DT), RandomForest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN). To achieve the best outcome ensemble soft voting and hard voting techniques are used while classifying ransomware families based on attack attributes. Performance analysis is done by comparing our proposed ensemble models with standalone models on behavioral attributes based ransomware dataset..

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are one of the most rapidly evolving types of solvents, appearing in a broad range of applications such as nanotechnology, electrochemistry, biomass transformation, pharmaceuticals, membrane technology, biocomposite development, modern 3D-printing, and many others. The range of their applicability continues to expand, which demands the development of new DESs with improved properties. To do so requires an understanding of the fundamental relationship between the structure and properties of DESs. Computer simulation and machine learning techniques provide a fruitful approach as they can provide predictions, reveal physical mechanisms and readily be linked to experiments. This review is devoted to the computational research of DESs and describes technical features of DES simulations and the corresponding perspectives on various DES applications. The aim is to demonstrate the current frontiers of computational research of DESs and discuss future perspectives.

The herd effect is a common phenomenon in social society. The detection of this phenomenon is of great significance in many tasks based on social network analysis such as recommendation. However, the research on social network and natural language processing seldom focuses on this issue. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised data mining method to detect herding in social networks. Taking shopping review as an example, our algorithm can identify other reviews which are affected by some previous reviews and detect a herd effect chain. From the overall perspective, the cross effects of all views form the herd effect graph. This algorithm can be widely used in various social network analysis methods through graph structure, which provides new useful features for many tasks.

Defect detection and identification from fruits and vegetables are particularly challenging for Indian agriculture. Defect Detection is a process to identify the defects or damages in vegetables and fruits, based on the shapes, colors and textures. The local market finds it difficult to cope with the defects and other infections in fruits and vegetables as quality evaluations and classification of vegetables and fruits have become tedious process. Recently, several approaches based on Image processing, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence methods have been proposed for the purpose of defect detection. On the basis of classifying the types of defects, related pathogens, and physical and morphological characteristics descriptors, we review the different approaches based on a corpus of 57 articles between 2016 and 2021. In the process of describing the defect analysis, steps from the target articles, algorithms, and methods including qualitative and quantitative evaluation are mainly summarized. The aim of this current review work is to present-day novel images and collects recent defective area calculation methods to detect surface defects of fruits and vegetables using RGB images and to classify whether the fruit is defected or fresh. A rigorous evaluation of many new algorithms provided for quality assurance by researcher’s probes of vegetables and fruits have been conducted in this work. This review work conveys that using the recent identification features will help to decrease the disadvantages in fruit storeroom owing to storage of the affected vegetables and fruits, ie. Preventing the spread of defects and other infections from the infected fruits and vegetables to the fresh ones.

The world of science is drowned in a wealth of information. How to make sense of this wealth of published articles, blog posts and abstracts has become an important challenge given the importance of science to different aspects of societal function. At the crux of the issue lies the increasing trend where scientific discovery informs decision making at the societal level. One example, is the elucidation of the ozone hole to the promulgation of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, and documenting increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration led to climate action and signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Hence, understanding a research field becomes an important need for many decision makers across different sectors of society. But, the scientific literature is cryptic and esoteric, and presents a significant barrier to comprehension. One approach to ameliorate the problem is statistical machine reading, which provides the critical capability of identifying key concepts that underpins a research field. Such important concepts help provide an incision point to gain further understanding of the field and initiating further conversation about the field. This work sought to validate the concept of whether applying statistical machine reading to a body of literature comprising short blog posts and abstracts of published articles help in understanding the field of metabolic engineering. One important angle pursued in this research is whether the tabulated list of terms and phrases identified by statistical machine reading could be creatively analyzed to gain a deeper understanding of the research field. For example, the most frequently occurring terms and phrases could describe key concepts of the research field. Moving down in frequency occurrence would be terms and phrases that describe methodologies and approaches of the field. Finally, less frequently occurring terms and phrases may be tools and resources used in the research field. Results validated the utility of statistical machine reading in identifying important terms and phrases associated with the research field. But the small dataset of blog posts and abstracts used in this study severely hampered the identification of most of the key concepts of metabolic engineering, which is a fairly broad field of research. Overall, statistical machine reading shows utility in identifying terms and phrases that could describe a field. However, the level of understanding is closely tied in to the breadth and depth of reading material available, which meant that the methodology is data intensive in nature. Future use of supercomputing or quantum computing could help alleviate constraints of computational capacity, and help tackle the exponential rise in computational complexity as the size of the reading material for machine reading expands.

Experimental test facilities are generally characterised using linear transfer functions to relate the wavemaker forcing amplitude to wave elevation at a probe located in the wavetank. Second and third order correction methods are becoming available but are limited to certain ranges of waves in their applicability. Artificial intelligence has been shown to be a suitable tool to find even highly nonlinear functional relationships. This paper reports on a numerical wavetank implemented using the OpenFOAM software package which is characterised using artificial intelligence. The aim of the research is to train neural networks to represent non-linear transfer functions mapping a desired surface-elevation time-trace at a probe to the wavemaker input required to create it. These first results already demonstrate the viability of the approach and the suitability of a single setup to find solutions over a wide range of sea states and wave characteristics.

Ramsey’s theory (RAM) from combinatorics and network theory goes looking for regularities and repeated patterns inside structures equipped with nodes and edges. RAM represents the outcome of a dual methodological commitment: by one side a top-down approach evaluates the possible arrangement of specific subgraphs when the number of graph’s vertices is already known, by another side a bottom-up approach calculates the possible number of graph’s vertices when the arrangement of specific subgraphs is already known. Since natural neural networks are often represented in terms of graphs, we suggest to utilize RAM for the analytical and computational assessment of a peculiar structure supplied with neuronal vertices and axonal edges, i.e., the human brain connectome. We discuss how a RAM approach in neuroscientific issues might be able to locate and trace unexplored motifs shared between different cortical and subcortical subareas. Furthermore, we will describe how notable RAM outcomes, such as the Ramsey’s theorem and the Ramsey’s number, could contribute to uncover still unknown anatomical connexions endowed in neuronal networks and unexpected functional interactions among grey zones of the human brain.

Since its advent in the mid-twentieth century, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has been heavily influenced by biology. From the structure of the brain to evolution by natural selection, core biological concepts underpin many of the fundamental breakthroughs in modern AI. Here, focusing specifically on artificial neural networks (ANNs) that have become commonplace in machine learning, we show the numerous connections between theories based on coevolution, multi-level selection, modularity and competition and related developments in ANNs. Our aim is to illuminate the valuable but often overlooked inspiration biologists have provided AI research and to spark future contributions at this intersection of biology and computer science. Although recent advances in AI have been swift, many significant challenges remain requiring innovative solutions. Thankfully, biology in all its forms still has a lot to teach us, especially when trying to create truly intelligent machines.

The diffusion of molecules in aqueous solutions in the domain of membrane technology is very critical in the efficiency of chemical engineering and purification processes. In this study, the diffusion in high and low concentration regions is simulated with finite difference method (FDM), and then the results of numerical computations are coupled with adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and bilayered neural network method (BNNM). Machine learning approach can individually predict diffusion phenomena across the domain based on understanding of the machine instead of the discretization of an ordinary differential equation (ODE). The findings of the machine learning method are in good agreement with those of FDM at different times of the simulation. In addition to numerical computation, the error of the system is computed for different iterations. The results show that by increasing the number of iterations and training datasets, all errors reduce significantly for both training and testing. BNN method is also used to train the prediction process of diffusion for a more accurate comparison. This technique is similar to ANFIS method in terms of prediction capability. According to the findings, ANFIS approach predicts diffusion slightly better than BNN method. In this regard, ANFIS technique produces R>0.99 while BNN method produces R around 0.98. Both machine learning methods are accurate enough to predict diffusion throughout the domain for different time steps. The computational time for both algorithms is less than that of FDM method to predict low and high concentrations in the domain. Besides, based on the results, artificial intelligence (AI) can find the relationship between inputs and outputs and determine which input has the main influence on the output in this study to optimize the process. As such, future studies can be focused on AI and other methods for faster prediction and optimization processes.

Brain, the most complex object known in the universe, uses few watts of power. To mimic it a nuclear power plant will be required and this power house controls the human body, single handedly. Surprisingly, “On the left side, nothing is right and on the right side there is nothing left”. Typically, there are two lateral halves of the brain: Left hemisphere and right hemisphere working distinctly. Left hemisphere is inclined towards logic; Right hemisphere is the root cause of imagination added with critical thinking. In situations like the current pandemic, COVID-19, it is the right half which tends to dominate the processing. This gives birth to mental stress, anxiety thus, aggravating the existing medical condition. Considering this pattern, a survey was conducted in Durg district of Chhattisgarh, which is one of the most hard hit epicentre of the COVID-19 second wave in India. According to this survey, it was revealed that largely women of all age groups (10-25, 26-40, 40 above) were right brained i.e. dominance of right over left hemisphere. Being more imaginative and creative thinkers they are more likely to suffer from mental issues than males. The aim of this research is to improve the mental wellbeing of the citizens in such threatening conditions. To prevent this situation awareness is a must and some stress relieving games have also been created.

Predicting trip purpose from comprehensive and continuous smart card data is beneficial for transport and city planners in investigating travel behaviours and urban mobility. Here we propose a framework, ActivityNET, using machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict passengers’ trip purpose from smart card data and Points-of-Interest (POIs) data. The feasibility of the framework is demonstrated in two phases. Phase I focuses on extracting activities from individuals’ daily travel patterns from smart card data and combining them with POIs using the proposed ‘activity-POIs consolidation algorithm’. Phase II feeds the extracted features into an artificial neural network (ANN) with multiple scenarios and predicts trip purpose under primary activities (home and work) and secondary activities (entertainment, eating, shopping, child drop-offs/pick-ups and part-time work) with high accuracy. As a case study, the proposed ActivityNET framework is applied in Greater London and illustrates a robust competence to predict trip purpose. The promising outcomes demonstrate that the cost-effective framework offers high predictive accuracy and valuable insights into transport planning.

Drilling of wells for oil and gas production is a highly complex and expensive part of reservoir development. Thus, together with injury prevention, there is a goal to save cost expenditures on downtime and repair of drilling equipment. Nowadays companies have begun to look for ways to improve the efficiency of drilling and minimize non-production time with the help of new technologies. To support decisions in a narrow time frame, it is valuable to have an early warning system. Such a decision support system will help an engineer to intervene in the drilling process and prevent high expenses of unproductive time and equipment repair due to a problem. This work is describing a comparison of machine learning algorithms for anomaly detection during well drilling. Tested models classify drilling problems based on historical data from previously drilled wells. To validate anomaly detection algorithms, we use historical logs of drilling problems for 67 wells at a large brownfield in Siberia, Russia. Wells with problems were selected and analyzed. It should be noted that out of the 67 wells, 20 wells were drilled without expenses for unproductive time. Experiential results illustrated that a model based on gradient boosting can classify the complications in the drilling process best of all.

Extensive, but remote oil and gas fields of the United States, Canada, and Russia require the construction and operation of extremely long pipelines. Global warming and local heating effects lead to rising soil temperatures and thus a reduction in the sub-grade capacity of the soils; this causes changes in the spatial positions and forms of the pipelines, consequently increasing the number of accidents. Oil operators are compelled to monitor the soil temperature along the routes of the remoted pipelines in order to be able to perform remedial measures in time. They are therefore seeking methods for the analysis of volumetric diagnostic information. To forecast soil temperatures at the different depths we propose compiling a multidimensional dataset, defining descriptive statistics; selecting uncorrelated time series; generating synthetic features; robust scaling temperature series, tuning the additive regression model to forecast soil temperatures.

Stress has been identified as one of the major causes of automobile crashes which then lead to high rates of fatalities and injuries each year. Stress can be measured via physiological measurements and in this study the focus will be based on the features that can be extracted by common wearable devices. Hence the study will be mainly focusing on the heart rate variability (HRV). This study is aimed to develop a good predictive model that can accurately classify stress levels from ECG-derived HRV features, obtained from automobile drivers, testing different machine learning methodologies such as K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting (GB). Moreover, the models obtained with highest predictive power will be used as reference for the development of a machine learning model that would be used to classify stress from HRV features derived from HRV measurements obtained from wearable devices. We demonstrate that MLP was the ideal stress classifier by achieving a Recall of 80%. The proposed method can be also used on all applications in which is important to monitor the stress level e. g. in physical rehabilitation, anxiety relief or mental wellbeing.

In large infrastructures such as dams, which have a relatively high economic value, ensuring the proper operation of the associated hydraulic facilities in different operating conditions is of utmost importance. To ensure the correct and successful operation of the dam's hydraulic equipment and prevent possible damages, including gates and downstream tunnel, to build laboratory models and perform some tests are essential (the advancement of the smart sensors based on artificial intelligence is essential). One of the causes of damage to dam bottom outlets is cavitation in downstream and between the gates, which can impact on dam facilities, and air aeration can be a solution to improve it. In the present study, six dams in different provinces in Iran has been chosen to evaluate the air entrainment in the downstream tunnel experimentally. Three artificial neural networks (ANN) based machine learning (ML) algorithms are used to model and predict the air aeration in the bottom outlet. The proposed models are trained with genetic algorithms (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), i.e., ANN-GA, ANN-PSO, and ANFIS-PSO. Two hydrodynamic variables, namely volume rate and opening percentage of the gate, are used as inputs into all bottom outlet models. The results showed that the most optimal model is ANFIS-PSO to predict the dependent value compared with ANN-GA and ANN-PSO. The importance of the volume rate and opening percentage of the dams' gate parameters is more effective for suitable air aeration.

In addition, the device will provide a consumer with a smart smartphone application with accurate pulse beat and body temperature data in real time. MAX 30100 and LM35 are primarily used for the detection of human heart and temperature. The performance of these sensors is generated by an arrhythmia algorithm in the esp32 segment.

Conditional generative adversarial networks (CGANs) learn a mapping from conditional input to observed image and perform tasks in image generation, manipulation and translation. In-situ monitoring uses sensors to obtain real-time information of additive manufacturing (AM) processes that relate to process stability and part quality. Understanding the correlations between process inputs and in-situ process signatures through machine learning can enable experimental-driven predictions of future process inputs. In this research, in-situ data obtained during a metallic powder bed fusion AM process is mapped with a CGAN. A single build of two turbine blades is monitored using EOSTATE Exposure OT, a near-infrared optical tomography system of the EOS M290 system. Layerwise images generated from the in-situ monitoring system were paired with a conditional image that labeled the specimen cross-section, laser-scan stripe overlap and z-distance to part surfaces. A CGAN was trained using the turbine blade data set and employed to generate new in-situ layerwise images for unseen conditional inputs.

In the manufacturing industry, orders are typically scheduled and delivered through batches, and the probability of machine failure under high-load operation is high. On this basis, we focus on a single machine batch scheduling problem with a maintenance interval (SMBSP-MI). The studied problem is expressed by three-field representation as 1|B,MI|\sum{F_j+\mu}m, and the optimization objective is to minimize total flow time and delivery costs. Firstly, 1|B,MI|\sum{F_j+\mu}m is proved to be NP-hard by Turing reduction. Secondly, shortest processing time (SPT) order is shown the optimal scheduling of SMBSP-MI, and a dynamic programming algorithm based on SPT (DPA-SPT) with the time complexity of O(n^3T_1) is proposed. A small-scale example is designed to verify the feasibility of DPA-SPT. Finally, DPA-SPT is approximated to a fully-polynomial dynamic programming approximation algorithm based on SPT (FDPAA-SPT) by intervals partitioning technique. The proposed FDPAA-SPT runs in O(\frac{n^5}{\varepsilon^2})\ time with the approximation (1+\varepsilon).

In this paper, a metal cutting machine position control have been designed and simulated using Matlab/Simulink Toolbox successfully. The open loop response of the system analysis shows that the system needs performance improvement. Static output feedback and full state feedback H₂ controllers have been used to increase the performance of the system. Comparison of the metal cutting machine position using static output feedback and full state feedback H₂ controllers have been done to track a set point position using step and sine wave input signals and a promising results have been analyzed.

Modeling has been utilized broadly by every national government and the World Health Organization in choosing the best procedures to seek after in relieving the impacts of COVID-19. Many epidemiological models are studied to understand the spread of the illness and its prediction to find maximum capacity for human-to-human transmission so that control techniques can be adopted. Also, arrangements for the medical facilities required such as hospital beds and medical supplies can be made in advance. Many models are used to anticipate the results keeping in view the present scenario. There is an urgent need to study the various models and their impacts. In this study, we present a systematic literature review on epidemiological models for the outbreak of novel coronavirus in India. The epidemiological dynamics of COVID-19 is also studied. Here, In addition, an attempt to take out the results from the exploration and comparing it with the real data. The study helps to choose the models that are progressive and dependable to predict and give legitimate methods for various strategies.

Brain Tumor is one of the severe diseases and occurrence of this disease threats human life. Detection of brain tumor in advance can secure patient’s life from unwanted loss. Well-timed and swift disease detection and treatment strategy can lead to improved quality of life in these patients. This paper attempts to use Machine Learning based ensemble approaches for recognising patients with brain tumor. Ensemble technique based AdaBoost classifier and 10-fold stratified cross-validation method are assembled in single platform is proposed in this paper for prediction of brain tumor. This prediction is compared against three baseline classifiers such as Gradient Boost, Random Forest and Extra Trees classifier. Experimental result implies the superiority of this model with an accuracy of 98.97%, f1-score of 0.99, kappa statistics score of 0.95 and MSE of 0.0103.

Background: There are major air pollution monitoring gaps in sub-Saharan Africa. Developing capacity in the region to conduct air monitoring in the region can help estimate exposure to air pollution for epidemiology research. The purpose of our study is to develop a land use regression (LUR) model using low-cost air quality sensors developed by a research group in Uganda (AirQo). Methods: Using these low-cost sensors, we collected continuous measurements of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) between May 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020 at 22 monitoring sites across urban municipalities of Uganda. We compared average monthly PM2.5 concentrations from the AirQo sensors with measurements from a BAM-1020 reference monitor operated at the US Embassy in Kampala. Monthly PM2.5 concentrations were used for LUR modeling. We used eight Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and ensemble modeling; using 10-fold cross validation and root mean squared error (RMSE) to evaluate model performance. Results: Monthly PM2.5 concentration was 60.2 µg/m³ (IQR: 45.4-73.0 µg/m³; median= 57.5 µg/m³). For the ML LUR models, RMSE values ranged between 5.43 µg/m³ - 15.43 µg/m³ and explained between 28% and 92% of monthly PM2.5 variability. Generalized additive models explained the largest amount of PM2.5 variability (R²=0.92) and produced the lowest RMSE (5.43 µg/m³) in the held-out test set. The most important predictors of monthly PM2.5 concentrations included monthly precipitation, major roadway density, population density, latitude, greenness, and percentage of households using solid fuels. Conclusion: To our knowledge, ours is the first study to model the spatial distribution of urban air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa using air monitors developed from the region itself. Non-parametric ML for LUR modeling performed with high accuracy for prediction of monthly PM2.5 levels. Our analysis suggests that locally produced low-cost air quality sensors can help build capacity to conduct air pollution epidemiology research in the region.

This paper proposes a model based on gene expression programming for predicting discharge coefficient of triangular labyrinth weirs. The parameters influencing discharge coefficient prediction were first examined and presented as crest height ratio to the head over the crest of the weir (p/y), crest length of water to channel width (L/W), crest length of water to the head over the crest of the weir (L/y), Froude number (F=V/√(gy)) and vertex angle () dimensionless parameters. Different models were then presented using sensitivity analysis in order to examine each of the dimensionless parameters presented in this study. In addition, an equation was presented through the use of nonlinear regression (NLR) for the purpose of comparison with GEP. The results of the studies conducted by using different statistical indexes indicated that GEP is more capable than NLR. This is to the extent that GEP predicts the discharge coefficient with an average relative error of approximately 2.5% in such a manner that the predicted values have less than 5% relative error in the worst model.

Several researchers have contemplated deep learning-based post-filters to increase the quality of statistical parametric speech synthesis, which perform a mapping of the synthetic speech to the natural speech, considering the different parameters separately and trying to reduce the gap between them. The Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) Neural Networks have been applied successfully in this purpose, but there are still many aspects to improve in the results and in the process itself. In this paper, we introduce a new pre-training approach for the LSTM, with the objective of enhancing the quality of the synthesized speech, particularly in the spectrum, in a more efficient manner. Our approach begins with an auto-associative training of one LSTM network, which is used as an initialization for the post-filters. We show the advantages of this initialization for the enhancing of the Mel-Frequency Cepstral parameters of synthetic speech. Results show that the initialization succeeds in achieving better results in enhancing the statistical parametric speech spectrum in most cases when compared to the common random initialization approach of the networks.

Crowd density estimation is an important task for crowd monitoring. Many efforts have been done to automate the process of estimating crowd density from images and videos. Despite series of efforts, it remains a challenging task. In this paper, we proposes a new texture feature-based approach for the estimation of crowd density based on Completed Local Binary Pattern (CLBP). We first divide the image into blocks and then re-divide the blocks into cells. For each cell, we compute CLBP and then concatenate them to describe the texture of the corresponding block. We then train a multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, which classifies each block of image into one of four categories, i.e. Very Low, Low, Medium, and High. We evaluate our technique on the PETS 2009 dataset, and from the experiments, we show to achieve 95% accuracy for the proposed descriptor. We also compare other state-of-the-art texture descriptors and from the experimental results, we show that our proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

Intelligent algorithms are recently used in the optimization process in chemical engineering and application of multiphase flows such as bubbling flow. This overview of modeling can be a great replacement with complex numerical methods or very time-consuming and disruptive measurement experimental process. In this study, we develop the adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) method for mapping inputs and outputs together and understand the behavior of the fluid flow from other output parameters of the bubble column reactor. Neural cells can fully learn the process in their memory and after the training stage, the fuzzy structure predicts the multiphase flow data. Four inputs such as x coordinate, y coordinate, z coordinate, and air superficial velocity and one output such as pressure gradient are considered in the learning process of the ANFIS method. During the learning process, the different number of the membership function, type of membership functions and the number of inputs are examined to achieve the intelligent algorithm with high accuracy. The results show that as the number of inputs increases the accuracy of the ANFIS method rises up to almost for all cases, while the increment in the number of rules has a effect on the intelligence of artificial algorithm. This finding shows that the density of neural objects or higher input parameters enables the moded for better understanding. We also proposed a new evaluation of data in the bubble column reactor by mapping inputs and outputs and shuffle all parameters together to understand the behaviour of the multiphase flow as a function of either inputs or outputs. This new process of mapping inputs and outputs data provides a framework to fully understand the flow in the fluid domain in a short time of fuzzy structure calculation.

Clustering is an important task in data mining that has become more challenging due to the ever-increasing size of available datasets. To cope with these big data scenarios, a high-performance clustering approach is required. Sparse grid clustering is a density-based clustering method that uses a sparse grid density estimation as its central building block. The underlying density estimation approach enables the detection of clusters with non-convex shapes and without a predetermined number of clusters. In this work, we introduce a new distributed and performance-portable variant of the sparse grid clustering algorithm that is suited for big data settings. Our compute kernels were implemented in OpenCL to enable portability across a wide range of architectures. For distributed environments, we added a manager-worker scheme that was implemented using MPI. In experiments on two supercomputers, Piz Daint and Hazel Hen, with up to 100 million data points in a 10-dimensional dataset, we show the performance and scalability of our approach. The dataset with 100 million data points was clustered in 1198s using 128 nodes of Piz Daint. This translates to an overall performance of 352TFLOPS. On the node-level, we provide results for two GPUs, Nvidia's Tesla P100 and the AMD FirePro W8100, and one processor-based platform that uses Intel Xeon E5-2680v3 processors. In these experiments, we achieved between 43% and 66% of the peak performance across all compute kernels and devices, demonstrating the performance portability of our approach.

Big Data classification has recently received a great deal of attention due to the main properties of Big Data, which are volume, variety, and velocity. The furthest-pair-based binary search tree (FPBST) shows a great potential for Big Data classification. This work attempts to improve the performance the FPBST in terms of computation time, space consumed and accuracy. The major enhancement of the FPBST includes converting the resultant BST to a decision tree, in order to remove the need for the slow K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and to obtain a smaller tree, which is useful for memory usage, speeding both training and testing phases and increasing the classification accuracy. The proposed decision trees are based on calculating the probabilities of each class at each node using various methods; these probabilities are then used by the testing phase to classify an unseen example. The experimental results on some (small, intermediate and big) machine learning datasets show the efficiency of the proposed methods, in terms of space, speed and accuracy compared to the FPBST, which shows great potential for further enhancements of the proposed methods to be used in practice.

Solar Energy has enormous potential to fulfill the energy requirements of the world and can be extracted using solar cells. However, the solar cells are affected by poor efficiency and further affected by wind speed, orientation of the panel, temperature and dust deposition. There are different cleaning technologies devised by many industry experts to clean the solar panels. However, they are facing drawbacks when deployed in the solar farm. An efficient cleaning system, along with an added cooling system must be devised, so that the solar panels must be cleaned and cooled often to maximize the energy production. This paper presents a low-cost, energy-efficient, smart and innovative dust cleaning and cooling system for Photovoltaic (PV) Panels. The system is designed, fabricated, fully-automated using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and tested successfully. A battery-charging kiosk, capable of charging two, 24V Lead Acid Batteries embedded within this prototype, shall provide clean-energy in a sustainable manner to the rural communities of the developing nations. The user can check the status of the battery such as battery voltage, battery temperature, and state of charge on the Human Machine Interface (HMI) panel while charging the batteries

This study investigated the breakdown trend in an automated production with an aim to recommend the application of Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) for an improved productivity via a new preventive maintenance (PM) program. Individual Section-forming machine (ISM): a glass blowing machine for making glass bottles was used as the case study of an automated production system. The machine parts and the working mechanisms were analysed with a special focus on methods of processes and procedures that will enable the ISM maintenance department run more effective and achieve its essential goal of ensuring effective machine operation and reducing machine downtime. In this work, information is provided on the steps and procedures to identify critical components of the ISM using Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) as a tool to develop an optimal maintenance program based on the reliability data of the equipment’s functional components. A relationship was established between the failure rate of the machine components and the maintenance costs such that using the recommended PM program, an evidence of improvement in the machine’s availability, safety and cost-effectiveness will result into an increase in the company’s profit margin.

Formally specifying hedonic well-being is difficult, but relevant to utilitarian theories of morality. In this paper we describe a starting point based on attitudinal hedonism, which posits that hedonic well-being is determined by the extent to which a moral patient believes her preferences to be fulfilled. While this assumption probably does not capture the sought-out notion of well-being fully, our formalization seems to be relevant first step towards more satisfactory definition of hedonic well-being.

This paper discusses about control of the linear switched reluctance machines (LSRMs) network for the zero phase-difference tracking to a sinusoidal reference. The dynamics of each LSRM is derived by online system identification and modeled as a second-order linear system. Accordingly, based on the coupled harmonic oscillators synchronization manner, a distributed control is proposed to synchronize each LSRM state to a virtual LSRM node representing the external sinusoidal reference for tracking it with zero phase-difference. Subsequently, a simulation scenario and an experimental platform with the identical parameter setup are designed to investigate the tracking performance of the LSRMs network constructed by the proposed distributed control. Finally, the simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed LSRMs network controller, and also prove that the coupled harmonic oscillators synchronization method can improve the synchronization tracking performance and precision.

This paper presents a state machine based architecture which enhances flexibility and reusability of industrial robots, more concretely dual-arm multisensor robots. The proposed architecture, in addition to allowing absolute control of the execution, eases the programming of new applications by increasing the reusability of the developed modules. Through an easy-to-use graphical user interface, operators are able to create, modify, reuse and maintain industrial processes increasing the flexibility of the cell. Moreover, the proposed approach is applied in a real use case in order to demonstrate its capabilities and feasibility in industrial environments. A comparative analysis is presented for evaluating presented approach versus traditional robot programming techniques.

Turnovers in the National Football League (NFL) occur whenever a team loses possession of the ball due to a fumble, or an interception. Turnovers disrupt momentum of the offensive team, and represent lost opportunities to advance downfield and score. Teams with a positive differential turnover margin in a given game win $70\%$ of the time. Turnovers are statistically rare events, occurring apparently randomly. These characteristics make them difficult to predict. This investigation advances the hypothesis that turnovers are predictable in NFL football. Machine learning models are developed to learn the concept: At any point within a football game, what is the likelihood that a turnover will be observed on the next play from scrimmage? Results presented suggest evidence to support the working hypothesis. Under certain conditions, both fumbles and interceptions can be anticipated at low false discovery rates (less than $15\%$). This approach may be useful to inform in-game strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of turnovers by an offensive team, or to maximize their probability by a defensive squad.

Accurate forecasting of icing thickness has a great significance for ensuring the security and stability of power grid. In order to improve the forecasting accuracy, this paper proposes an icing forecasting system based on fireworks algorithm and weighted least square support vector machine (W-LSSVM). The method of fireworks algorithm is employed to select the proper input features with the purpose of eliminating the redundant influence. In addition, the aim of W-LSSVM model is to train and test the historical data-set with the selected features. The capability of this proposed icing forecasting model and framework is tested through the simulation experiments using real-world icing data from monitoring center of key laboratory of anti-ice disaster, Hunan, South China. The results show that the proposed W-LSSVM-FA method has a higher prediction accuracy and it may be a promising alternative for icing thickness forecasting.

In this paper we propose and study in the setting of a Hilbert space an averaged Halpern type algorithm for approximating the solution of a common fixed point problem for a couple of nonexpansive and demicontractive mappings with a variational inequality constraint. The strong convergence of the sequence generated by the algorithm is established under feasible assumptions on the parameters involved. In particular, we also obtain the common solution of the fixed point problem for nonexpansive or demicontractive mappings and of a variational inequality problem. Our results extend and generalize various important related results in literature that were established for the pairs (nonexpansive, nonspreading) or (nonexpansive, strongly quasi-nonexpansive) mappings. Numerical tests to illustrate the superiority of our algorithm over the ones existing in literature are also reported.

We examine data assimilation coupling between meteorology and chemistry in the stratosphere from both weak and strong coupling strategies. The study was performed with the Canadian operational weather prediction Global Environmental Multiscale (GEM) model coupled online with the photochemical stratospheric chemistry developed at the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, described in Part I. Here, the Canadian Meteorological Centre’s operational variational assimilation system was extended to include errors of chemical variables and cross-covariances between meteorological and chemical variables in a 3D-Var configuration, and we added the adjoint of tracer advection in the 4D-Var configuration. Our results show that the assimilation of limb sounding observations from the MIPAS instrument on board Envisat can be used to anchor the AMSU-A radiance bias correction scheme. Also, the added value of limb sounding temperature observations on meteorology and transport is shown to be significant. Weak coupling data assimilation with ozone-radiation interaction is shown to give comparable on meteorology whether a simplified linearized or comprehensive ozone chemistry scheme is used. Strong coupling data assimilation, using static error cross-covariances between ozone and temperature in a 3D-Var context, produced inconclusive results with the approximations we used. We have also conducted the assimilation of long-lived species observations using 4D-Var to infer winds. Our results showed the added value of assimilating several long-lived species, and an improvement in the zonal wind in the Tropics within the troposphere and lower stratosphere. 4D-Var assimilation also induced a correction of zonal wind in the surf zone and a temperature bias in the lower tropical stratosphere

In the domain of software engineering, the accurate and effective classification of requirements is of paramount importance. Proper classifications of these requirements enable developers to create robust and error-free software solution. Traditional methods of user requirements classification face the issue of the reliance on manual processes, which are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to human error. The limitations of traditional methods underscore the need for more automated, scalable, and robust approaches to user requirements classification in order to meet the demands of modern software development practices. To improve the classification process, we employed a Deep Learning (DL) methodology termed the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) model to conduct feature extraction, after which we merged these feature vectors into ML classifiers. Our research methodology is structured around a five-step process. Initially, the textual input is tokenized and converted to lowercase. Subsequently, we eliminate all punctuation. The pre-processed text is then subjected to a Bi-LSTM (Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory) model for feature vector extraction. After that, this feature vector is fed into different classifiers such as Medium KNN, Cubic KNN, Linear SVM, Quadratic SVM, and Cubic SVM and obtained an accuracy of around 99.60% to 99.80% on a publicly available dataset of requirements.

Satellite-derived high-resolution soil moisture and precipitation data have become widely adopted in natural hazard and climate change research. Landslide susceptibility mapping, which often relies on static predisposing factors, faces challenges in accounting for temporal changes, limiting its efficacy in accurately identifying potential locations for landslide occurrences. A key challenge is the lack of sufficient ground-based monitoring networks for soil moisture and precipitation, especially in remote areas with limited access to rain gauge data. This study addresses these limitations by integrating static landslide conditioning factors—such as topography, geology, and landscape features—with high-resolution dynamic satellite data, including soil moisture and precipitation. Using machine learning techniques, particularly the Random Forest (RF) algorithm, the approach enables the generation of dynamic landslide susceptibility maps that incorporate both spatial and temporal variations. The work validates the method by analyzing two major landslide events and their relationship to hydrological factors, occurred during two rainfall events in 2019 in Italy. The results successfully identified high-probability landslide areas by accounting for multiple hydrogeological factors and capturing the unique patterns of rainfall and soil moisture distribution and intensity. The findings emphasize the need for further research to refine the use of high-resolution satellite precipitation and soil moisture data, particularly in identifying the optimal temporal and spatial resolutions for landslide susceptibility mapping.

The extent of single- and multi-cropping systems in any region, and potential changes to it, have consequences on food and resource use, raising important policy questions. However, addressing these questions is limited by a lack of reliable data on multi-cropping practices at a high spatial resolution, especially in areas with high crop diversity. In this paper, we describe a relatively low-cost and scalable method to identify double-cropping at the field-scale using satellite (Landsat) imagery. The process combines machine learning methods with expert labeling. We demonstrate the process by measuring double-cropping extent in a portion of Washington State in the Pacific Northwest United States--- a region with significant production of more than 60 distinct types of crops including hay, fruits, vegetables, and grains in irrigated settings. Our results indicate that the current state-of-the-art methods for identifying cropping intensity---that apply simpler rule-based thresholds on vegetation indices---do not work well in regions with a high crop diversity, and likely significantly overestimate double-cropped extent. Multiple machine learning models were able to perform better by capturing nuances that the simple rule-based approaches are unable to. In particular, our (image-based) deep learning model was able to capture nuances in this crop-diverse environment and achieve a high accuracy (96-99% overall accuracy and 83– 93% producer accuracy for the double-cropped class with standard error of less than 2.5%) while also identifying double-cropping in the right crop types and locations based on expert knowledge. Our expert labeling process worked well and has potential as a relatively low-cost, scalable approach for remote sensing applications. The product developed here is valuable to inform several policy questions related to food production and resource use.

In February of 2024, Dr. Jun Zhuang and Dr. Casey Kennington published a paper (Zhuang and Kennington, 2024) in which they classified large language model (LLM) survey papers into different taxonomies utilizing graph learning. In this paper, I evaluate the dataset they created and used and propose that in its current state, there is not enough samples to classify other survey papers into specific categories.

This paper surveys the landscape of security and data attacks on machine unlearning, with a focus on financial and e-commerce applications. We discuss key privacy threats such as Membership Inference Attacks and Data Reconstruction Attacks, where adversaries attempt to infer or reconstruct data that should have been removed. In addition, we explore security attacks including Machine Unlearning Data Poisoning, Unlearning Request Attacks, and Machine Unlearning Jailbreak Attacks, which target the underlying mechanisms of unlearning to manipulate or corrupt the model. To mitigate these risks, various defense strategies are examined, including differential privacy, robust cryptographic guarantees, and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs), offering verifiable and tamper-proof unlearning mechanisms. These approaches are essential for safeguarding data integrity and privacy in high-stakes financial and e-commerce contexts, where compromised models can lead to fraud, data leaks, and reputational damage. This survey highlights the need for continued research and innovation in secure machine unlearning, as well as the importance of developing strong defenses against evolving attack vectors.

Phakopsora pachyrhizi, the causative agent of the Asian Soybean Rust, is one of the most prominent causes of yield loss in soybean production worldwide. In this study, a combination of hyperspectral imaging with advanced data analysis methodology is shown to accurately detect soybean rust symptoms in early stages and differentiate them from other factors at leaf scale. Data analysis was performed with neural networks based on training data from a small subset of the respective experiments and compared with classical machine learning methods for its accuracy and early disease detection capabilities. Results show that even with a comparably small subset of training data the analysis through neural networks can outperform classical machine learning methods in a complex dataset with high variability in the designated classes. In two separate experiments it was possible to accurately detect disease in inoculated leaves before symptoms were visible to the human eye. These results do not only show the potential of this methodology for precision farming applications, but also allow accurate and objective assessment of symptom severity and development for scientific studies and resistance breeding.

The use of digital twin and shadow concepts for industrial material processes have promoted new notions to bridge the gap between physical and cyber manufacturing processes. Hence, many multi-disciplinary areas like advanced sensor technologies, material science, data analytics, and machine learning algorithms are employed to create such hybrid systems. On the other hand, new additive manufacturing (AM) processes for metals and polymers based on novel emerging technologies have already shown a promising horizon for manufacturing of sophisticated parts with complex geometries. These processes are going through a major transformation with the emergence of digital technology, hybrid physical-data driven modelling and fast reduced models. This paper presents a fresh look at the hybrid physical-data driven and reduced order modelling (ROM) techniques for digitalization of AM processes within a digital-twin concept. The main contribution is to show the benefits of ROM and machine learning (ML) technology for process data handling, optimization\controlling and their integration into the real-time assessment of AM processes. Hence, a novel combination of efficient data solver technology and architecturally designed neural network (NN) module has been developed for the transient manufacturing processes with high heating\cooling rates. Furthermore, a real-world case study has been presented where the combination of hybrid modelling along with ROM and ML schemes are used for an industrial wire arc AM (WAAM) process.

Background: Ensemble tree-based models such as Xgboost are highly prognostic in cardiovascular medicine, as measured by the Clinical Effectiveness Metric (CEM). However, their ability to handle correlated data, such as hospital-level effects, are limited. Objectives: The aim of this work is to develop a binary outcome mixed effects Xgboost (BME) model that integrates random effects at the hospital level. To ascertain how well the model handles correlated data in cardiovascular outcomes, we aims to assess its performance and compare it to fixed effects Xgboost and traditional logistic regression models. Methods: A total of 227,087 patients over 17 years of age, undergoing cardiac surgery from 42 UK hospitals between 1 Jan 2012 and 31 Mar 2019 were included. The dataset was split into two cohorts: Training/Validation (n = 157196; 2012-2016) and Holdout (n = 69891; 2017-2019). The outcome variable was 30 days mortality with hospitals considered as clustering variable. The logistic regression, mixed effects logistic regression, Xgboost and binary outcome mixed effects Xgboost (BME) were fitted to both standardized and unstandardized datasets across a range of sample sizes and the estimated prediction power metrics were compared to identify the best approach. Results: The exploratory study found high variability in hospital-related mortality across datasets, which supported the adoption of mixed effects models. Unstandardized Xgboost BME demonstrated marked improvements in predictor power over the Xgboost model at small sample size ranges, but performance differences decreased as dataset sizes increased. Generalized linear models (glm) and generalized linear mixed-effects models (glmer) models followed similar results, with Xgboost models excelling also at greater sample sizes. Conclusions: These findings suggest that integrating mixed effects into machine learning models can enhance their applicability in clinical settings where sample size is small such as rare conditions.

In the recent years, with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) traditional methods have seen a significant transformation in the agriculture sector, especially in soil management. Soil management involves practices that maintains and improves the physical, chemical as well as the biological properties of the soil. Soil health management is essential for both the environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture production, ensuring the soil productivity and functional aspects associated with the ecosystem. Soil health management is one of the most important aspects of agriculture and food production, hence preserving and enhancing the soil health is an essential factor for supporting agriculture. Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies with soil health management offers the potential to enhance agricultural sustainability, productivity, adapt to the climatic changes and resource constraints. The study of AI tools that can help improve soil health management by providing more accurate and efficient monitoring, analysis and decision-making capabilities. This paper studies the potential AI technologies including machine learning, robotics, and remote sensing in enhancing soil health, raising crop yields, and lowering environmental concerns by examining previous research and case studies.

Predictive maintenance (PdM) represents a transformative approach to ensuring the security and reliability of critical infrastructure systems. This proactive maintenance strategy leverages advanced data analytics, machine learning, and sensor technology to anticipate and address potential failures before they occur. By continuously monitoring the health of infrastructure components and analyzing performance data, predictive maintenance enables timely interventions, minimizes unplanned downtimes, and enhances overall system resilience. This paper explores the application of predictive maintenance in safeguarding critical infrastructure, focusing on its impact on security, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Case studies demonstrate how PdM has been successfully implemented across various sectors, including transportation, energy, and utilities, highlighting its role in mitigating risks and extending the lifespan of essential assets. The findings underscore the importance of integrating predictive maintenance into security strategies to protect vital infrastructure from emerging threats and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) has revolutionized structural biology by enabling the determination of high-resolution 3- Dimensional (3D) structures of large biological macromolecules. Protein particle picking, the process of identifying individual protein particles in cryo-EM micrographs for building protein structures, has progressed from manual and template-based methods to sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI)-driven approaches in recent years. This review critically examines the evolution and current state of cryo-EM particle picking methods, with an emphasis on the impact of AI. We conducted a comparative evaluation of popular AI-based particle picking methods, using both general machine learning (ML) metrics and specific cryo-EM structure determination metrics. This analysis involved constructing the 3D density map from the picked protein particles and assessing the obtained resolution and particle orientation diversity, underscoring the significant impact of AI on cryo-EM particle picking. Despite the advancements, we also identified key obstacles, such as handling complex micrographs with small proteins. The analysis provides insights into the future development of more sophisticated and fully automated AI methods in cryo-EM particle recognition.

This paper explores the application of machine learning (ML) in predicting functional recovery in patients with ischemic stroke. As technology advances, ML shows significant potential in the field of stroke medicine, especially in the areas of big data analytics and personalized medicine. Studies have shown that ML algorithms can improve the accuracy of stroke image analysis, subtype classification, risk assessment, treatment guidance, and prognosis prediction. However, the widespread use of ML still faces challenges such as data standardization, model validation, privacy, and bias. This paper reviews the current application status of ML in the field of stroke, discusses the challenges faced, and looks forward to the future development direction, aiming to promote the practical application of ML technology in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke to improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients.

Building small populations mortality tables has great practical importance in actuarial applications. In recent years, several works in literature explored different methodologies to quantify and assess longevity and mortality risk, especially within the context of small populations: many models dealing with this problem usually use a two-population approach, modelling a mortality spread between a larger reference population and the population of interest, via likelihood-based techniques. To broaden the tools at actuaries’ disposal to build small population mortality tables, a general structure for a two-step two-populations model is proposed, its main element of novelty residing in a machine-learning based approach to mortality spread estimation. In order to obtain this, Contrast Trees and related Estimation Contrast Boosting techniques have been applied. A quite general machine learning-based model has then been adapted in order to generalize Italian actuarial practice in company tables estimation and implemented using data from Human Mortality Database. Finally, results from the ML-based model have been compared to those obtained from the traditional model.

Accurate fire severity mapping is essential for understanding the impacts of wildfires on vegetation dynamics in arid savannas. The frequent wildfires in these biomes often cause topkill, where vegetation experiences above-ground combustion, but the below-ground root structures survive, allowing for subsequent regrowth post-burn. Investigating post-fire regrowth is crucial for maintaining ecological balance, elucidating fire regimes, and enhancing the knowledge base of land managers regarding vegetation response. This study examined the relationship between bush fire severity and post-burn coppicing/regeneration events of woody vegetation in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. Utilizing UAV-derived RGB imagery combined with a Random Forest (RF) classification algorithm, we aimed to enhance the precision of burn severity mapping at a fine spatial resolution. Our research focused on a 1 km2 plot within the Modisa Wildlife Reserve, extensively burnt by the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Fire of 2021. The UAV imagery, captured at various intervals post-burn, provided detailed orthomosaics and canopy height models, facilitating precise land cover classification and burn severity assessment. The RF model achieved an overall accuracy of 79.5% and effectively identified key burn severity indicators, including green vegetation, charred grass, and ash deposits. Our analysis revealed a >50% probability of woody vegetation regrowth in high severity burn areas six months post-burn, highlighting the resilience of these ecosystems. This study demonstrates the efficacy of low-cost UAV photogrammetry for fine scale burn severity assessment and provides valuable insights into post-fire vegetation recovery, thereby aiding land management and conservation efforts in savannas.

To address the issue of intelligent optimization algorithms being prone to local optima, resulting in insufficient feature extraction and low fault type recognition rates when optimizing Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) parameters, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method based on an improved Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimization (GTO) algorithm. The GTO algorithm is enhanced using Logistic chaotic mapping, a linear decreasing weight factor, the global exploration strategy of the Osprey Optimization Algorithm, and the Levy flight strategy, improving its ability to escape local optima, adaptability, and convergence accuracy. This algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of VMD and SVM for fault diagnosis. Experiments on fault diagnosis with two datasets of different sample sizes show that the proposed method achieves a diagnostic accuracy of no less than 98% for samples of varying sizes, with stable and reliable results.

In recent years, cryptocurrencies have received substantial attention from investors, researchers and the media due to their volatile behaviour and potential for high returns. This interest has led to an expanding body of research aimed at predicting cryptocurrency prices, which are notably influenced by a wide array of technical, sentimental, and legal factors. This paper reviews scholarly content from 2014 to 2024, employing a systematic approach to explore advanced quantitative methods for cryptocurrency price prediction. It encompasses a broad spectrum of predictive models, from early statistical analyses to sophisticated machine and deep learning algorithms. Notably, this review identifies and discusses the integration of emerging technologies such as Transformers and hybrid deep learning models, which offer new avenues for enhancing prediction accuracy and practical applicability in real-world scenarios. By thoroughly investigating various methodologies and parameters influencing cryptocurrency price predictions, including market sentiment, technical indicators, and blockchain features, this review highlights the field’s complexity and rapid evolution. The analysis identifies significant research gaps and under-explored areas, providing a foundational guideline for future studies. These guidelines aim to connect theoretical advancements with practical, profit-driven applications in cryptocurrency trading, ensuring that future research is both innovative and applicable.

Behavior analysis is a widely used non-invasive tool in the practical production routine, as the animal acts as a biosensor capable of reflecting its degree of adaptation and discomfort to some environmental challenge. Predominantly, conventional statistics use occurrence data for behavioral evaluation and well-being estimation, disregarding the temporal sequence of events. The Generalized Sequential Pattern (GSP) algorithm is a data mining method that identifies recurrent sequences that exceed a user-specified support threshold, whose potential has not yet been investigated for broiler chickens in enriched environments. Enrichment aims to increase environmental complexity with promising effects on animal welfare, stimulating priority behaviors and potentially reducing the deleterious effects of heat stress. The objective was to validate the application of the GSP algorithm to identify temporal correlations between heat stress and the behavior of broiler chickens in enriched environments through proof of concept. Video image collection was carried out automatically for 48 continuous hours, analyzing a continuous period of seven hours, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, during two consecutive days of tests for chickens housed in enriched and non-enriched environments under comfort and stress temperatures. Chickens at comfort temperature showed high motivation to perform the behaviors of Preening (P), Foraging (F), Lying down (Ld), Eating (E), and Walking (W) whose sequences <{Ld,P}>; <{Ld,F}>; <{P,F,P}>; <{Ld,P,F}> and <{E,W,F}> were the only ones observed in both treatments. All other sequential patterns (comfort and stress) were distinct, suggesting that environmental enrichment alters the behavioral pattern of broiler chickens. Heat stress drastically reduced the sequential patterns found at the 20% threshold level in the tested environments. The behavior of lying laterally "Ll" is a strong indicator of heat stress in broilers and was only frequent in the non-enriched environment, which may suggest that environmental enrichment provides the animal with better opportunities to adapt to stress-inducing challenges, such as heat.

Securing the structural safety of blades has become crucial, owing to the increasing size and weight of blades resulting from the recent development of large wind turbines. Composites are primarily used for blade manufacturing because of their high specific strength and specific stiff-ness. However, in composite blades, joints may experience fractures from the loads generated during wind turbine operation, leading to deformation caused by changes in the structural stiff-ness. In this study, 7,132 debonding damage data, classified by damage type, position, and size, are selected to predict debonding damage based on natural frequency. The change in the natural frequency caused by debonding damage is acquired through finite element (FE) modeling and modal analysis. Synchronization between the FE analysis model and manufactured blades is achieved through modal testing and data analysis. Finally, the relationship between the debond-ing damage and the change in natural frequency is examined using artificial neural network techniques
