Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer accounts for a significant proportion of cases. While various treatments are available, endocrine therapies are often the first-line treatment for this type of breast cancer. However, the development of drug resistance poses a significant challenge in managing this disease. ESR1 mutations have been identified as a common mechanism of endocrine therapy resistance in ER+ breast cancer. The first-generation selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) fulvestrant has shown some activity against ESR1 mutant tumors. However, due to its poor bioavailability and need for intramuscular injection, it may not be the optimal therapy for patients. Second-generation SERDs have been developed to overcome these limitations. These newer drugs have improved oral bioavailability and pharmacokinetics, making them more convenient and effective for patients. Several oral SERDs are now in phase III trials for early and advanced ER+ breast cancer. This review summarizes the background of oral SERD development, the current status, and future perspectives.

Rationale: Astroglial cells (astrocytes), previously considered mere support cells in the central nervous system, are now understood to be key players in integrating neuronal inputs and modulating synaptic density. Astrocytic processes surround the perikaryons and neuronal processes including dendritic spines and by extension or retraction, respectively, lyse or facilitate increases in number or size of synapses. Astrocytes express estrogen receptors and in animal models, including monkeys, have been shown to respond to estradiol by changing the disposition of their processes in a manner opposite to the number of synapses. Experimental: Our objective was to examine the effects of estradiol and two other clinically available Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs; tamoxifen and raloxifene) on astrocyte processes in human brain tissue. To accomplish this goal, we used simultaneous immunostaining of the glial cytoskeletal marker glial acidic protein (GFAP) and ezrin, a membrane-cytoskeletal linker, plus light microscopy image analysis to study the thinness and branching of randomly selected human temporal lobe neocortical astrocytes after a 60-minute incubation of 400µ temporal lobe slices. Effects of estradiol (10 nM), raloxifene and tamoxifen (1.0 µM) were compared with untreated control slices. Results: Changes were confirmed in the branchings of temporal lobe astrocytes during the 60-minute incubation period. Astrocytes in control slices extended their branches and became thinner. Parallel changes were present in tamoxifen-cultured slices. Raloxifene-treated slices showed significant reduction of astrocyte branching and thinning compared to controls (p = 0.01, 0.01, 0.06 for primary, secondary, and tertiary processes, respectively). An intermediate reduction of astroglial process size was present following estradiol treatment, but not at a statistically significant level compared to controls. Conclusions: These preliminary results support estrogen receptor modulator regulation of human astroglial processes in a manner consistent with previous reports on animals in which changes in glial spreading plays a role in synaptic changes. Neuroendocrinological implications are discussed.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in blood cancer treatment despite their multiple adverse effects. Biological response to GCs is mediated by glucocorticoid receptor (GR) by transactivation (TA), associated with side effects, and transrepression (TR), mediating anticancer effects. Selective GR agonists (SEGRAs) preferentially activating GR TR could be better option for cancer treatment. One of well-characterized SEGRAs is 2-(4-acetoxyphenyl)-2-chloro-N-methylethylammonium-chloride (CpdA), demonstrated anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo, however its translational potential is limited due to chemical instability. CpdA derivatives CpdA-01-08 were designed by two synthetic strategies. Derivative CpdA-03 demonstrated superior GR affinity and stability compared to CpdA. Analysis of CpdA-03 ligand properties in lymphoma Granta and leukemia CEM cell lines revealed its SEGRA profile: it induced GR TR without triggering GR TA, as evidenced by changes in expression of GR target genes. Effects of CpdA-03 on cell viability, growth, and apoptosis were similar to reference GR ligand, dexamethasone (Dex), and the proto-type compound CpdA. In vivo testing of CpdA-03 anti-lymphoma activity in transplantable P388 murine lymphoma model showed that CpdA-03 reduced tumor volume threefold, outperforming Dex and CpdA. In conclusion, this work introduces CpdA-03 as promising new SEGRA with potential for further development as anti-lymphoma drug with fewer side effects.

Small molecule modulators of neurotensin receptor 1 (NTSR1), a class A G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), has been emerging as promising therapeutics for psychiatric disorders and cancer. Interestingly, a chemical group substitution of NTSR1 modulators can launch different downstream regulation, highlighting the significance of deciphering the internal fine-tuning mechanism. Here, we conducted synergistic application of Gaussian accelerated molecular dynamics simulation, conventional molecular dynamics simulation, and Markov state models (MSM) to investigate the underpinning mechanism of ‘driver chemical groups’ of modulators triggering inverse signaling. The result indicated that the flexibility of leucine moiety in NTSR1 agonists contributes to the inward displacement of TM7 through a loosely coupled allosteric pathway, while the rigidity of adamantane moiety in NTSR1 antagonists leads to unfavorable downward transduction of agonistic signaling. Furthermore, we found that R3226.54, Y3196.51, F3537.42, R1483.32, S3567.45 and S3577.46 may play a key role in inducing the activation of NTSR1. Together, our findings not only highlight the ingenious signal transduction within class A GPCRs, but also lay a foundation for the development of targeted drugs harboring different regulatory function of NTSR1.

This research investigates Haifa ports emissions’ contribution to the existing daily emission inventory level in the area. This research based on developed full bottom-up model framework that looks at the single vessel daily voyage through its port call stages. The main data sources for vessels movements used in this research are the Israel Navy`s movements log and Israel Administration of Shipping and Ports’ (ASP) operational vessel movements and cargo log. The Fuel Consumption (FC) data and Sulfur Content (SC) levels are based on an official Israel ASP survey data. Observation years in this research are 2010 - 2018 with focus on the Ocean-Going Vessels (OGV) type only. The results show that the vessel fleet calling at Israel ports is mainly vessels that have a lower engine Tier grade (i.e., Tier 0 and 1) which is considered a heavy contributor to Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) pollutant. The study recommends on an additional cost charged (selective tariff) to reflect the external social cost linked to the single vessel air pollution combined with supportive technological infrastructure and economic incentive tools (e.g. electric subsidy) to attract or influence vessel owners to assign vessels equipped with new engine Tier grades for calls at Israeli ports.

Recently, Indium Tin Oxide, a highly transparent, well conductive, and CMOS-compatible material, has been paying strong attention to the thermo-optic controlled silicon photonics industry because it allows a miniature of the gap between the core silicon and the heater, thus enabling reducing the electric power consumption and enhancing the switching speed. In this article, we propose an ultralow loss and small-size ITO microheater for the phase shift tuning. The designated microheater is manipulated in realizing a numerical co-design of compact and high bandwidth three-mode converter and three-mode selective router. Simulation results illustrate the 3-dB bandwidth for the three-mode converter and three-mode selective router as much as 100-nm and 40-nm during crosstalk under -25 dB, respectively. Besides, co-designed devices attain relatively large fabrication tolerances corresponding to width and height tolerances of ±50 nm and ±5 nm. In addition, the proposed devices consumed less than 90 mW total power consumption and took a fast switching time below 8 μs. Moreover, both two co-designs can be integrated into an estimated compact footprint of 8 μm2160 μm. Such excellent performances demonstrate the attractive potential of ITO as low-loss thermo-optic phase shifters and open an alternative way for enabling ultrafast and high-speed mode division multiplexing systems and very large-scale photonic integrated circuits.

This research provides an in-depth analysis of the effectiveness of sheep farming, with a particular focus on the Awassi breed in the harsh environments of the Middle East. Investigations were conducted at the Fjaj sheep station in Jordan, with emphasis on how various factors, including lambing type, lamb sex, parity, age at lambing, and the ram affect the weight characteristics of 2,263 records. Advanced statistical models, both fixed and mixed were employed to estimate genetic and breeding values, particularly in relation to the number of lambs per ram. The findings underscore the crucial role that both genetic and environmental factors play towards improving weigh traits and overall flock performance. Similar strategies may be effective in other breeds and in other regions with diverse environmental conditions. The study concludes that when farmers prioritize selective breeding and environmental management they can significantly enhance weight traits, boost profitability, and achieve sustainable economic success in sheep farming.

Conservation agriculture and conservation tillage have drawn the attention not only of scientists but of politicians and societies worldwide. This paper aims to present a method for selecting re-search studies on conservation agriculture, conservation tillage, and the role of straw residues on soil health and soil stability against climatic hazards. VOSviewer version 1.6.18 free software tool was used in this study to achieve the bibliometric and mapping approach for studies on the effects of climate change in terms of conservation, tillage, soil health, and straw and microbe or straw and climate interaction or other paradigms. Scopus database (accessed July 7, 2023) indexed a total of 752.2018 bibliographic items classified into 15 paradigms e.g., Carbon (AND Straw) or Microbes (AND Straw). From the examination of the selected papers, it was concluded that straw residue has an impact on soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties and the environment in general.

Autophagy was initially recognized as a bulk degradation process that randomly sequesters and degrades cytoplasmic material in lysosomes (vacuoles in yeast). In recent years, various selective autophagy pathways have been discovered. Glycophagy, the selective autophagy of glycogen granules, is one of them. It is an important contributor to Pompe disease, a type of lysosomal storage disorder with lysosomal accumulation of glycogen. Here, we developed the Komagataella phaffii yeast as a simple model of glycogen autophagy under nitrogen starvation conditions. For this, we turned the self-glucosylating initiator of glycogen synthesis, Glg1, which is covalently bound to glycogen, into the Glg1-GFP autophagic reporter. Our results revealed that vacuolar delivery of Glg1-GFP and its processing to free GFP were strictly dependent on autophagic machinery and vacuolar proteolysis. Notably, this process was independent of Atg11, the scaffold protein common for many selective autophagy pathways. Importantly, the non-mutated Glg1-GFP (which synthesizes and marks glycogen) and mutated Glg1Y212F-GFP (which does not synthesize glycogen and is degraded by non-selective autophagy as cytosolic Pgk1-GFP) were equally well delivered to the vacuole and had similar levels of released GFP. Therefore, we concluded that glycogen autophagy is a non-selective process in K. phaffii yeast under nitrogen starvation conditions.

As one of toxic Volatile Organic Pollutant (TVOCs), formaldehyde has a toxic effect on microorganisms, and then inhibits the biochemical process of formaldehyde wastewater treatment. Therefore, the selective degradation of formaldehyde is of great significance to achieve formaldehyde wastewater high-efficiency and low-cost treatment. This study constructed a heterogeneous Fe-ZSM-5/H2O2 Fenton system for selective degradation to target compounds. By bonding Fe3+ onto the surface of ZSM-5 molecular sieve, Fe-ZSM-5 was prepared successfully. XRD, BET and FT-IR spectral studies shown the prepared Fe-ZSM-5 was mainly composed of micropores. The influences of different variables on formaldehyde selective heterogeneous Fenton degradation performance were studied. The 93.72% formaldehyde degradation and the 98.15% selectivity of formaldehyde compared with glucose had demonstrated in the optimized Fenton system after 360 min. Notably, the resultant selective Fenton oxidation system had a wide range of pH suitability from 3.0 to 10.0. Also, the Fe-ZSM-5 was used in 5 consecutive cycles, while the degradation efficiency of formaldehyde did not drop dramatically. Using reactive oxygen species scavengers, hydroxyl radical was the main active substance to degrade formaldehyde. Furthermore, the great degradation performance of this system to high concentration of formaldehyde was acquired, and the degrading efficiency was more than 95%.

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are promising carriers for constructing drug delivery systems (DDSs) in disease treatments. Previous studies have suggested that lipid composition and biophysical properties of LNPs can significantly impact their interaction with cells and tissues, allowing for the development of suitable LNPs for precise drug delivery. Our previous study proposed the concept and facile preparation of reconstituted lipid nanoparticles (rLNPs), which not only have the advantages of traditional LNPs but also contain the lipids of mother cell/tissue. In this study, we have found that brain-derived rLNPs (B-rLNPs) can have much better accumulation to the ischemic area of the ischemic stroke (IS) model than liver-derived rLNPs (L-rLNPs). This homing effect hopefully makes rLNPs a useful tool for developing highly accessible devices with homologous targeting ability for precise drug delivery.

4-(thiazol-2-yldiazenyl)phenol (L₁) and 2-((4-hydroxyphenyl) diazenyl)-5-nitrophenol (L₂) based on azo phenol were synthesised and used as selective colorimetric sensor for CN^- and AcO⁻ ion in DMSO/H₂O-HEPES (v/v; 1:1, pH–7.3 ± 0.2) and showed good sensitivity with large red shifts and nanomolar detection limit for CN^- and AcO^- ion. The stoichiometry of L₁ with CN⁻/AcO⁻ ion was found to be 1:1 and L₂ with CN⁻/AcO⁻ ion was found to be 1:2. Binding constant for L₁+ CN⁻, L₁ + AcO⁻, L₂ + CN⁻ and L₂ + AcO⁻ were calculated by B-H plot as 1.6 × 10³, 8.0 × 10², 8.4 × 10³ and 1.7 × 10² respectively. L₂ showed high selectivity towards CN⁻ ion with low detection limit of 81 nM and large binding constant. In addition, ¹H NMR titration and DFT studies also supported the deprotonation mechanism of receptors in the presence of selective anions.

The growing global threat of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has been exacerbated by inadequate antibiotic consumption and the difficulty in developing new therapeutic strategies. Selective Digestive Decontamination (SDD) is presented as an encouraging measure to prevent the appearance and colonization of MDR bacteria. We compared the pattern of antibiotic consumption in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of our hospital before and after the implementation of the SDD protocol. This quasi-experimental study was conducted in an ICU from June-2021 to June-2023. The incidence of nosocomial infections, colonizations, and the number of isolated MDR bacteria, as well as the defined-daily-dose (DDD), were monitored. A total of 3266 patients were included, with 1532 in the pre-intervention group and 1734 in the post-intervention group. The median age was 62 years, 66% were male, and the average APACHE II and SOFA scores were 15 and 6.5, respectively. There was a significant reduction in overall antibiotic consumption in the post-SDD group (p= 0.028), highlighting a decrease in Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) (p= 0.0099). There was also a reduction in colonization incidence density and nosocomial infections. Implementing the SDD protocol significantly reduced antibiotic consumption in the ICU, suggesting important implications for infection control and antimicrobial resistance management.

GDF5 gene is involved in the development of skeletal elements, synovial joint formation, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Several polymorphisms are present within the gene and two of them, rs143384 and 143383, have been reported as correlated with osteoarticular disease or muscle flexibility. The aim of this research is to verify if the worldwide distribution among human populations of rs143384 polymorphism has been shaped by selective pressure, or if it’s the result of random genetic drift events. Ninety-four individuals of both sexes, 18-28 years old, from Sardinia were analyzed. We observed the following genotype frequencies: 28.72% of homozygotes AA, 13.83% of homozygotes GG, and 57.45% of heterozygotes AG. Allele frequencies were 0.574 for allele A and 0.426 for alle G. Relationships between populations were verified by Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). Our data show: i) a clear heterogeneity within the African populations; ii) a strong differentiation between Africans and the other populations: iii) the Sardinian population is placed withing the European cluster. To reveal possible traces of selective pressure, Population Branch Statistic (PBS) was calculated; both SNPs rs143384 and 143383 have low PBS values, suggesting that there are no signals of selective pressure in those areas of the gene.

Chronic wasting disease is a fatal transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of cervids caused by a misfolded variant of the normal cellular prion protein, and is closely related to sheep scrapie. Variations in a host’s prion gene, PRNP, and its primary protein structure, dramatically affect susceptibility to specific prion disorders, and breeding for PRNP variants that prevent scrapie infection has led to steep declines in the disease in North American and European sheep. While resistant alleles have been identified in cervids, a PRNP variant that completely prevents CWD has not yet been identified. Thus, control of the disease in farmed herds traditionally relies on quarantine and depopulation. In CWD-endemic areas, depopulation of private herds becomes challenging to justify, leading to opportunities to manage the disease in situ. In the present study, we developed a selective breeding program for farmed white-tailed deer in a CWD-endemic area, focused on reducing frequencies of highly susceptible PRNP variants and introducing animals with less-susceptible variants into historically high prevalence areas. We found that breeding followed predictable Mendelian inheritance, and early data support our project’s utility in reducing CWD prevalence. This project represents a novel approach to CWD management, with future efforts building on these findings.

Malassezia species are fastidious and slow-growing yeasts whose isolation from polymicrobial samples is hampered by fast-growing microorganisms. Malassezia selective culture media are needed because Malassezia are resistant to cycloheximide, but some fungi, including the chief human commensal Candida albicans resist to this compound. This study aimed to test whether the macrolide rapamycin could be used in combination with cycloheximide to develop a Malassezia-selective culture medium. Rapamycin susceptibility testing was performed via microdilution assays in modified Dixon against M. furfur and five Candida spp. The MIC was the lowest concentration producing 90% growth inhibition. Rapamycin medium ± cycloheximide 500 mg/L was also added to FastFung solid and yeast suspensions were inoculated and incubated for 72h. Rapamycin MICs against Candida spp. ranged from 0.5 to 2 mg/L, except for C. krusei whose MIC was >32 mg/L. M. furfur stains were rapamycin resistant. Rapamycin and cycloheximide supplementation of the FastFung medium effectively inhibited the growth of non-Malassezia yeast, including the cycloheximide-resistant C. albicans and C. tropicalis. Based on our findings, we recommend using this “MalaSelect” medium for Malassezia isolation and culture from polymicrobial samples.

Metallic thin-film materials and nanoparticles (mainly Silver (Ag)-based) are recently being used in many nano-technological applications including sensors, reflective heat-mirror coatings, and antibacterial coatings as well. The physical vapor deposition technique attracts significant attention for Ag-based nanocomposites with tailoring the structural and optical properties of metallic thin films thus allowing further improvements and application possibilities in various existing fields namely electronics, catalysis, magnetics, optics in alongside the environment and health and new emergent fields in, particularly thin-film coatings. This study highlights the preparation, characterization, properties, and possible future application directions of several types of Silver (Ag)-based nanocomposite thin films prepared by using physical vapor deposition techniques.

In standard construction of hyperrational numbers using ultra-power we assume that the ultralter is selective. It makes possible toassign real value to any nite hyperrational number. So, we can consider hyperrational numbers with selective ultralter as extension of traditional real numbers. Also proved the existence of strictly monotonic or stationary representing sequence for any hyperrational number.

Ecological and environmental damage caused by oil spillage has attracted great attention. Used cigarette filter (CF) has also caused negative environmental consequences. Converting CF to economical materials is a feasible way to address these problems. In this study, we demonstrate a simple method for production of a highly hydrophobic absorbent from CF. CF was modified by using different volume ratios of octadecyltrichlorosilane and methyltrimethoxysilane. When the volume ratio was 3:2, the modified CF had the high water contact angle of 155°. It could selectively and completely absorb silicone oil from an oil-water mixture and showed a good absorption capacity of 38.3 g/g. The absorbed oil was readily and rapidly recovered by simple mechanical squeezing, and it could be reused immediately without any additional treatments. The as-obtained superhydrophobic modified CF retained an absorption capacity of 80% for pump oil and 82% for silicone oil after 10 cycles. The modified CF showed good elasticity in the test of repeated use. The present study provides novel design of a functional material for development of hydrophobic absorbents from used CF via a facile method toward oil spillage cleanup as well as a new recycling method of CF to alleviate the environmental impact.

A study has been carried out on Ta and Nb recovery by liquid-liquid extraction process using 4-methylacetophenone (4-MAcPh) as organic phase. The 4-MAcPh was compared to methylisobutylketone (MIBK) with respect to extraction efficiencies (kD values) at different concentrations of H2SO4 in the aqueous phase. The results showed a similar extraction of Nb for both solvents. However, for Ta extraction efficiency is increased by a factor of 1.3 for 4-MAcPh. In addition, the MIBK solubilized completely after 6 mol L-1 of H2SO4 against only a loss of 0.14 to 4% for 4-MAcPh between 6 and 9 mol L-1 of H2SO4. The potential of 4-MAcPh has also been studied to selectively recover Ta from a model capacitor waste solution. The results showed a selectivity for Ta in the presence of impurities such as Fe, Ni, Mn. The 4-MAcPh also presents the advantage of having physicochemical properties adapted to its use in liquid-liquid extraction technologies such as mixer-settlers.

The selectivity in selective autophagy pathways is achieved via the selective autophagy receptors (SARs) – proteins that bind a ligand on the substrate to be degraded and the Atg8-family protein on the growing autophagic membrane, phagophore, effectively bridging them. In mammals, the most common ligand of SARs is ubiquitin, a small protein modifier that tags substrates for their preferential degradation by autophagy. Consequently, the most common SARs are the ubiquitin-binding SARs, such as SQSTM1/p62 (sequestosome 1). Surprisingly, there is only one SAR of this type in yeast – Cue5, which acts as a receptor for aggrephagy and proteaphagy – pathways that remove the ubiquitinated protein aggregates and proteasomes, respectively. However, recent studies described the ubiquitin-dependent autophagic pathways that do not require Cue5, e.g. stationary phase lipophagy for intracellular lipid droplets and nitrogen starvation-induced mitophagy for mitochondria. What is the role of ubiquitin in these pathways? Here, we propose that the ubiquitinated lipid droplets and mitochondria are recognized by the alternative ubiquitin-binding SARs. Our analysis identifies the proteins that could potentially fulfill this role in yeast. We think that matching of the ubiquitin-dependent (but Cue5-independent) autophagic pathways with the ubiquitin-and-Atg8-binding proteins enlisted here might uncover the novel ubiquitin-binding SARs in yeast.

Lupus, also known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic autoimmune disease that can lead to inflammation and damage to multiple organs and tissues in the body. The symptoms vary from patient to patient, which makes the disease manifest very differently, resulting in difficulty in diagnosing and treating patients. Some may experience fatigue, hair loss, joint pain, and more. In the past, a general approach of blanket immunosuppression was commonly used to treat lupus. These immunosuppressive drugs would broadly target the immune system and focus on reducing symptoms. However, recent research has shown that selective immunotherapies such as monoclonal antibodies (anifrolumab and belimumab) which target specific components of the immune system are more effective in managing lupus because of their ability to reach specific cells in the immune system rather than easing symptoms. Anifrolumab blocks the activity of type I interferons, while belimumab neutralizes BLyS to reduce the production of autoantibodies, the root cause of SLE.¹⁻² This paper will introduce the immunology of the disease, explore how the more traditional approach of blanket immunosuppressive drugs work compared to the newer selective immunotherapies, and review the results from the clinical trials of anifrolumab and belimumab.

Based on some experiments, the paper describes with the help of polarization the physic-chemical processes that take place in the contact area of friction pairs, during the selective transfer as a result of the change in the input speed of the lubricant (glycerin), as well as how it influences their wear. Through polarization, the quantitative and qualitative transformations of glycerin are studied during frictional stress with selective transfer, the determination of the properties of the selective solution, and the damage to the metals and alloys of the friction pairs, but also after frictional stress.

Purpose: To analyze the clinical efficacy of superselective renal artery embolization and retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for the treatment of ruptured hemorrhagic renal angiomyolipoma and to provide a reference for the selection of treatment methods for ruptured hemorrhagic renal angiomyolipoma. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 24 patients who were diagnosed with ruptured hemorrhagic renal angiomyolipoma at the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University between January 2019 and December 2021. Among them, 10 patients were treated with superselective arterial embolization (SAE), and 14 patients were treated with retroperitoneal laparoscopic part nephrectomy (RLPN). The differences between the two treatment methods in terms of hospital stay, hospital costs, anesthesia method, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative bed rest time, antibiotic dosage, postoperative complication rate, tumor diameter changes, creatinine value changes, hemoglobin value changes, tumor recurrence rate, and reoperation rate were compared. Results: All patients completed the treatment and were discharged. There were no significant differences in length of hospital stay, hospital costs, creatinine change values, or postoperative complication rates between the two groups (P > 0.05). However, there were statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) in surgical time (85.50±19.94 min vs. 141.07±76.33 min), intraoperative blood loss (21.50±14.72 ml vs. 153.57±97.00 ml), postoperative bed rest time (22.7±1.56 h vs. 41.21±3.57 h), preoperative hemoglobin levels (94.7 ±23.62 g/L vs. 113.79 ±17.83 g/L), and hemoglobin changes (-6.60 ±10.36 g/L vs. -15.21 ±8.79 g/L) between the two groups. Both groups of patients had an average follow-up period of 22 months, and patients in the SAE group had a mean reduction of 3.33 cm in tumor diameter within the follow-up period compared with the preembolization period (P < 0.05). None of the patients in the SAE group experienced rebleeding, and there was no tumor recurrence in either group. Conclusion: SAE and RLPN are effective treatments for ruptured renal angiomyolipoma with good outcomes. Furthermore, compared to RLPN, SAE offers advantages such as simplicity of operation, minimal trauma, shorter surgical time, minimal impact on hemoglobin levels, shorter bed rest time, faster postoperative recovery, and maximal preservation of renal units.

The digital model of airborne frequency selective surface radomes (AFSSRs) is the basis of design, simulation analysis, manufacturing, and other related research of AFSSRs. This paper proposes a rapid modeling method of AFSSRs based on dynamic customizable primitives. Firstly, a layered digital model construction scheme of AFSSR is presented based on the typical radome wall structure. Then, according to the characteristics of various surface configurations and complex wireframe information of AFSSRs, the dynamic primitives are raised to express the boundary and contour information of all kinds of radomes. Focusing on the undevelopable characteristics of the aero-dynamic shape surface of the AFSSR, the arrangement solution and mapping method for frequency selective elements on undevelopable surfaces are proposed. Furthermore, the imple-mentation logic of this method on the creation of each layer model and the assembly of the whole machine model is introduced. Finally, according to this method, a rapid modeling system (RMS) is established, and the modeling effect and efficiency of the RMS are demonstrated and compared, which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of this method.

Porcine sapovirus (PoSaV) is a significant pathogen causing diarrhea with high morbidity and mortality rates. Given its zoonotic characteristics, this study conducts a comprehensive genetic evolutionary analysis of PoSaV. Results confirmed PoSaV as the primary RNA virus in piglet feces (27.54%). Phylogenetic analysis identifies the prevalent PoSaV strain SHCM/Mega2023 in the GIII genogroup, involving a recombinant event with MK962338 and KT922089. The time tree revealed that the GIII genogroup exhibits the widest divergence time span, indicating a high likelihood of viral recombination. Further selective pressure calculations demonstrate that PoSaV was under purifying selection (dN/dS &lt; 1), with seven positively selected sites in VP1 protein which might be related to the antigencity. In conclusion, this study presents a novel genomic evolution of PoSaV, offering valuable insights into antigenicity and vaccine research.

Selective laser sintering (SLS) has drawn attention for the fabrication of three-dimensional oral dosage forms due to the plurality of drug formulations that can be processed. The aim of this work was to employ SLS with a CO2 laser for the manufacturing of carvedilol personalised dos-age forms of various strengths. Carvedilol (CVD) and vinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer (Kollidon VA64) blends of various ratios were sintered to produce CVD tablets of 3.125, 6.25 and 12.5 mg. The tuning of the SLS processing parameter laser intensity, improved printability and impacted the tablet hardness, friability, CVD dissolution rate, and the total amount of drug re-leased. Physicochemical characterization showed the presence of CVD in the amorphous state. X-ray micro-CT analysis demonstrated that the applied CO2 intensity affected the total tablet po-rosity, which was reduced with increased laser intensity. The study demonstrated that SLS is a suitable technology for the development of personalised medicines that meet the required specifications and patient needs.

Delayed atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ZnO, i.e., area selective (AS)-ALD, was successfully achieved on silicon wafers (Si/SiO2) terminated with tris(dimethylamino)methylsilane (TDMAMS). This resist molecule was deposited in a home-built, near atmospheric pressure, flow-through , gas-phase reactor. TDMAMS has been shown to react with Si/SiO2 in a single cycle/reaction and to drastically reduce the number of silanols that remain at the surface. ZnO was deposited in a commercial ALD system using dimethylzinc (DMZ) as the zinc precursor and H2O as the coreactant. Deposition of TDMAMS was confirmed by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and wetting. ALD of ZnO, including its selectivity on TDMAMS – terminated Si/SiO2 (Si/SiO2/TDMAMS), was confirmed by in situ ellipsometry, ex situ SE, XPS, and/or high sensitivity – low energy ion scattering (HS-LEIS). The thermal stability of the TDMAMS resist layer, which is an important parameter for AS-ALD, was investigated by heating Si/SiO2/TDMAMS in air and nitrogen at 330 ºC. ALD of ZnO takes place more readily on Si/SiO2/TDMAMS heated in the air than in N2, suggesting greater damage to the surface heated in the air. To better understand the in situ ALD of ZnO, the data were also plotted as the normalized growth per cycle and to show the selectivity. Even one, short pulse of TDMAMS effectively passivates Si/SiO2. TDMAMS can be an effective small molecule inhibitor of ALD of ZnO on Si/SiO2 surfaces.

The effects of build orientation and heat treatment on the crack growth behavior of 316L stainless steel (SS) fabricated via a selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing process were investigated. Significant growth of available research results of additively manufactured metallic parts still needs to be improved. The most important issue connected with properties after additive manufacturing is properties high anisotropy, especially from the fatigue point of view. The research included crack growth behavior of additively manufactured 316L in comparison to conventionally made reference material. Both groups of samples were obtained using precipitation heat treatment. Different build orientation in additively manufactured samples and rolling direction in reference samples were taken into account as well. Precipitation heat treatment of additively manufactured parts allowed to reach similar microstructure and tensile properties to elements conventionally made. The heat treatment positively affected fatigue properties. Additionally, precipitation heat treatment of additively manufactured elements significantly affected the reduction of fatigue cracking velocity and changed the fatigue cracking mechanism.

Applied electrostatic engineering can be used to construct greenhouses that prevent entry of insect pests. Two types of electric field screen were used to exclude pests from the greenhouse: single- and double-charged dipolar electric field screens (S- and D-screen, respectively). The S-screen consisted of iron insulated conductor wires (ICWs) arrayed in parallel (ICW-layer), a grounded metal net on either side of the ICW-layer, and a direct current voltage generator. S-screens were attached to the side windows of the greenhouse to repel whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) that approached the nets. The D-screen was installed in a small anteroom at the greenhouse entrance to capture whiteflies entering through it. The ICW-layers of the D-screen were oppositely charged with equal voltages and arrayed alternately, and an insulator board or grounded metal net was placed on one side of the ICW-layer. The ICW-layers captured whiteflies entering the electric field of the double-charged dipolar electric field. Three screens equipped with yellow or gray boards or a grounded metal net were installed in the anteroom based on the airflow inside the room, as most whiteflies were brought in by air when the door was opened. Two D-screens with boards were useful for directing the airflow toward the wall with the netted D-screen. This screen eliminated the insects and the pest-free air was circulated inside the greenhouse. The D-screen with the yellow board attracted the whiteflies and was effective for trapping them when there was no wind. Our method kept the greenhouse pest-free throughout the entire period of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivation.

The application of solvent method in the preparation of polypropylene powders was investigated, including the influence of various technological conditions, such as the raw material melt index of polypropylene, processing temperature, dosage of the solvent and the packing pressure. The experimental data show that using solvent method can effectively produce polypropylene powder, and the optimal technological conditions are: melt index of polypropylene being about 17.8 g/10min, processing temperature being about 166.0 ℃, dosage of the solvent being about 0.067g/ml and the packing pressure being about 0.7MPa.Under this technological conditions, polypropylene powder with excellent sphericity could be prepared, the apparent density of powder can reach 0.40 g/cm3 and the prepared powder displayed a narrow size distribution with the mean size of about 42.7 µm.

This study reports a 50-year-old patient presented with eczematous drug-eruption induced by selpercatinib after the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The patient has symmetric erythematous papules and plaques all over the body with dry, scaly skin accompanied by severe pruritus and visible scarring. After systemic treatment with glucocorticoids, the skin lesions of the patient were well reduced. Currently, the medical literature on the incidence of selpercatinib-induced cutaneous eczematous reactions and their clinical management is scarce. Therefore, this study provides novel evidence for the treatment of selpercatinib-induced cutaneous eczematous reactions.

In this study, AlSi12 alloy was fabricated using the selective laser melting (SLM) technique to produce high density components with complex and customized parts for railway applications. Nonetheless, the production of dense samples necessitates the optimization of production process parameters. As a statistical design of experimental technique, the response surface methodology was used to optimise different combination of SLM parameters. The results were analysed using analyse of variance (ANOVA) and the signal-to-noise(S/N) ratios. The relationship between the hardness response to the process parameters (scanning speed and lase power) for determining the optimal processing conditions were examined. A hardness value of 133 HV was obtained. The process parameters were successfully optimized and the relationship between the parameters and the structures of the fabricated samples were reported.

Hydrodechlorination reaction of 3-(benzo-1,3-dioxol-5-yl)-3-chloro-2-methylacrylaldehyde in the presence of different low metal content heterogeneous mono- or bi-metallic catalysts was tested for the synthesis of the fragrance Helional® (3-[3,4-methylendioxyphenyl]-2-methyl-propionaldehyde). In particular, mono Pd/Al2O3, Rh/Al2O3 or bi-metallic Pd-Cu/Al2O3, Rh-Cu/Al2O3 catalysts were tested in different reaction conditions from which it emerged that mono-Rh/Al2O3 was the best performing catalyst allowing to achieve 100% substrate conversion and 99% selectivity towards Helional® in 24h at 80°C, p(H2) 1.0 MPa in the presence of a base. To establish correlations between atomic structure and catalytic activity, catalysts were characterized by Cu, Rh and Pd K-edge XANES, EXAFS analysis. These characterizations allowed to verify that the formation of Pd-Cu alloys and the presence of Cu oxide/hydroxide species on the surface of the Al2O3 support, are responsible for the very low catalytic efficiency of bimetallic species tested.

Advanced paternal age increases the risk of transmitting de novo germline mutations, particularly missense mutations activating the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling pathway, exemplified by the FGFR3 mutation linked to achondroplasia (ACH). This risk is attributed to the expansion of spermatogonial stem cells carrying the mutation, forming sub-clonal clusters in the ageing testis, thereby increasing the frequency of mutant sperm and the number of affected offspring from older fathers. While prior studies proposed a correlation between sub-clonal cluster expansion in the testis and elevated mutant sperm production in older donors, limited data exist on the universality of this phenomenon. Our study addresses this gap by examining the testis expansion patterns, as well as increases of mutations in sperm for two FGFR3 variants: c.1138G>A (p.G380R) and c.1948A>G (p.K650E)- associated with ACH or thanatophoric dysplasia (TDII), respectively. Unlike the ACH mutation, which showed sub-clonal expansion events in an aged testis and a significant increase of mutant sperm with the donor’s age, the TDII mutation formed sub-clonal clusters, but exhibited reduced transmission into sperm and no significant age-related increase. The mechanism behind this divergence remains unclear, suggesting potential pleiotropic effects of aberrant RTK signaling in the male germline, possibly hindering differentiation requiring meiosis. This study provides further insights into transmission risks of micro-mosaics associated with advanced paternal age in the male germline.

Biodiesel is one of the most popular biofuels as it is a promising substitute of the conventional diesel fuel, but for now it cannot be used as a stand-alone fuel due to its low oxidative stability. For this reason, the last years there have been efforts for its upgrading through the partial hydrogenation of the fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) that biodiesel consists of. This procedure succeeds in resolving the problem of low oxidative stability, but in some cases a new problem arises as the non-selective hydrogenation is deteriorating the fuel’s cold flow properties, which are crucial for its operation without damaging the vehicle’s engine. More specifically, the problem of deteriorated cold flow properties is caused by the formation of trans-monounsaturated FAMEs and fully saturated FAMEs while the hydrogenation reaction is taking place. The hydrogenated biodiesels are preferred to contain more cis-monounsaturated FAMEs, because these are considered to have the best combination between high oxidative stability and good cold flow properties. As a result, various systems and methods have been tested in order to achieve a selective partial hydrogenation of biodiesel’s FAMEs. In this review article, the catalytic systems and methods that stood out in various researches are presented and the factors that lead to the best possible outcome are investigated and discussed.

The mechanical properties, structure, and morphology of milled and 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V alloys produced by selective laser melting were investigated in this study. The mechanical properties were investigated by means of nanoindentation, a tensile test, and a three-point bending test. The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to study the surface topography and roughness of both titanium alloys. The surface structure and phase analysis were studied by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results from the nanoindentation experiments showed that the 3D-printed sample has higher indentation hardness and modulus than the milled one. The AFM observation of the surface topography of the samples showed that the milled sample has a higher roughness than the 3D-printed one. The tensile test results showed that the 3D printed sample by means of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology has about 26% higher tensile strength and smaller elongation than the milled one. The 3-point bending test revealed that the 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V sample has higher flexural strength than the milled one. It was found that the 3D-printed sample has a smaller crystal size than the milled one, which, according to the Hall-Petch relationship, leads to its higher indentation hardness.

In this research, a novel collector cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) was used to separate hematite from quartz via reverse flotation for the first time. Micro-flotation tests showed that CTAC had a strong ability to selectively collect quartz and a separation of hematite from quartz could be accomplished with a concentration of 0.00263 mmol/L CTAC. Zeta-potential measurements indicated that the positive CTAC+ species could selectively increase the surface potential of quartz, but it had rather a weak effect on the hematite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detection indicated that CTAC had a stronger binding affinity to oxygen sites on the surface of quartz than that of hematite, resulting in a large amount of CTAC predominantly adsorbed on quartz rather than hematite.

The concept of targeted drug delivery can be described in terms of the drug’s ability to mimic the other biological objects’ property to localize to target cells or tissues. For example, drug delivery systems based on red blood cells or mimicking some of their useful features, such as long circulation in stealth mode, have been known for decades. On the contrary, therapeutic strategies based on macrophages have gained very limited attention until recently. Here we review two biomimetic strategies associated with macrophages, that can be used to develop new therapeutic modalities: First, the mimicry of certain types of macrophages (i.e., the use of macrophages, including tumor-associated, or macrophage-like particles as a carrier for targeted delivery of therapeutic agents); and Second, the mimicry of ligands, naturally absorbed by macrophages (i.e., the use of therapeutic agents specifically targeted at macrophages). We discuss potential applications of biomimetic systems involving macrophages for the new advancements in treatment of infections, inflammatory diseases, and cancer.

Firocoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug specifically formulated for veterinary medicine and selectively acts on inhibiting the cyclooxygenase 2 enzyme(COX-2). This study aimed to evaluate the possible adverse effects of administering oral therapeutic firocoxib on gastric mucosa, hematological parameters, coagulation cascade, and hepatic and renal biochemistry in healthy horses. Nine clinically healthy Arabian horses, approximately nine years old, received 0.1mg/kg of oral firocoxib for 14 days. Before beginning treatment, a gastroscopic examination was conducted, and venous blood samples were obtained for laboratory tests on D0. Follow-up blood samples and gastroscopic examinations were taken on D7 and D14 after starting treatment and one week after completing treatment on D21. No changes were found in the gastroscopic and hematological tests. Additionally, coagulation and serum biochemistry levels remain between normal values for this particular species. However, the increased activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prothrombin time (PT) indicate reduced blood coagulation capacity, which contradicts the expected effect of treatment with selective COX-2 inhibitors, as these drugs theoretically promote coagulation. Administering Firocoxib to horses is safe as it does not cause any significant adverse reactions. Therefore, it is a suitable option for managing inflammatory conditions in these animals.

The study presents the synthesis and characterization of dual-layer sulfonated polyphenylenesulfone (SPPSu) nanocomposite hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes incorporating titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles using the phase inversion technique. The newly developed membranes were systematically characterized using advanced tools and methods to evaluate their properties and performance. The study focused on investigating the effects of TiO2 addition in the SPPSu inner layer on pure water permeability, and salt rejection. The nanocomposite hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes exhibited a significant enhancement in pure water permeability, with a three-fold increase compared to the pristine membranes, achieving a flux of 5.4 L/m2h.bar. The addition of TiO2 also led to an improvement in the mechanical properties of the membranes, as evidenced by the increase in the expected tensile strength from 2.4 to 3.9 MPa. To evaluate the salt rejection performance, rejection tests were conducted using a laboratory-scale filtration setup in recycle mode. Aqueous solutions containing different divalent ions, specifically magnesium sulfate (Mg2SO4) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) at a concentration of 500 ppm, were used as the feed solution. The modified dual-layer hollow fiber nanocomposite membranes exhibited a maximal rejection of 95% for Mg2SO4, demonstrating their effective separation capabilities for divalent ions. The findings of this study highlight the successful synthesis and characterization of dual-layer SPPSu nanocomposite hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles. The incorporation of TiO2 resulted in improved pure water flux, mechanical strength, and salt rejection performance. These enhanced properties make the developed nanocomposite membranes promising candidates for applications in nanofiltration processes, particularly for the selective separation of divalent ions from aqueous solutions.

Molluscan aquaculture is a major contributor to global seafood production, but is hampered by infectious disease outbreaks which can cause serious economic losses. Selective breeding has been widely used to improve disease resistance in major agricultural and aquaculture species, and has clear potential in molluscs, albeit its commercial application remains at a formative stage. Advances in genomic technologies, especially development of cost-efficient genomic selection, have potential to accelerate genetic improvement. However, tailored approaches are required due to the distinctive reproductive and lifecycle characteristics of molluscan species. Transgenesis and genome editing, in particular CRISPR/Cas systems, have been successfully trialled in molluscs, and may further understanding and improvement of genetic resistance to disease through targeted changes to the host genome. Whole organism genome editing is achievable on a much greater scale compared to other farmed species, making genome-wide CRISPR screening approaches plausible. This review discusses the current state and future potential of selective breeding, genomic tools, and genome editing approaches to understand and improve host resistance to infectious disease in molluscs.

Selective laser melting is an emerging Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology for metals. Intricate three-dimensional parts can be generated from the powder bed by selectively melting the desired location of the powders. The process is repeated for each layer until the part is built. The necessary heat is provided by a laser. Temperature magnitude and history during SLM directly determine the molten pool dimensions, thermal stress, residual stress, balling effect, and dimensional accuracy. Laser-matter interaction is a crucial physical phenomenon in the SLM process. In this paper, five different heat source models are introduced to predict the three-dimensional temperature field analytically. These models are known as steady state moving point heat source, transient moving point heat source, semi-elliptical moving heat source, double elliptical moving heat source, and uniform moving heat source. The analytical temperature model for all of the heat source models are solved using three-dimensional differential equation of heat conduction with different approaches. The Steady state and transient moving heat source are solved using separation of variables approach. However, the rest of models are solved by employing the Green’s functions. Due to the high magnitude of the temperature in the presence of the laser, the temperature gradient is usually high which has a substantial impact on thermal material properties. Consequently, the temperature field is predicted by considering the temperature sensitivity thermal material properties. Moreover, due to the repeated heating and cooling, the part usually undergoes several melting and solidification cycles, this physical phenomenon is considered by modifying the heat capacity using latent heat of melting. Furthermore, the multi-layer aspect of metal AM process is considered by incorporating the temperature history from the previous layer since the interaction of the layers have an impact on heat transfer mechanisms. The proposed temperature field models based on different heat source approaches are validated using experimental measurement of melt pool geometry from independent experimentations. The detailed explanation of the comparison of models is also provided. Moreover, the effect of process parameters on the balling effect is also discussed.

We have studied on the stress measurement by making use of salivary nitrate, which can be a candidate of stress markers, with ion-selective field-effect transistors (ISFETs). ISFETs are suitable for on-site single-drop analysis of salivary nitrate within 10 seconds. However, when ISFETs are used for salivary nitrate, ISFETs have a problem which is called the initial drift. The initial drift makes it difficult for determination of an accurate nitrate monitoring. Thus, the purpose of this study is to suppress an initial drift and to search for new easy polymer to possess more performance of sensor responses than conventional matrix membrane such as PVC. In this research, we investigated ISFETs using specific matrix membrane for example, KP-13, Pellethane^® and P7281-PU. The initial drift was evaluated from the fluctuation of the response values generated by ISFETs which are immersed in saliva or aqueous solution. As a result, P7281-PU showed its suppression effect for the initial drift in the whole saliva and various solutions. Furthermore, the cause of drift may be H⁺ diffusion, and drift suppression effect of P7281-PU may be affected by urethane bond capturing H⁺ in ion-selective membrane. This result suggests a continuous nitrate monitoring and development of wearable sensors.

Using nanoindentation under various strain rates, the mechanical properties of a selective laser melted (SLM) SKD61 at the 800 mm/s scan speed was investigated and compared to SLM H13. No obvious pile-up due to the ratio of the residual depth (h_f) and the maximum depth (h_max) being lower than 0.7 and no cracking were observed on any of the indenter surfaces. The nanoindentation strain-rate sensitivity (m) of SLM SKD61 was found to be 0.034, with hardness increasing from 8.65 GPa to 9.93 GPa as the strain rate increased between 0.002 s⁻¹ and 0.1 s⁻¹. At the same scan speed, the m value of SLM H13 (m = 0.028) was lower than that of SLM SKD61, indicating that the mechanical behavior of SLM SKD61 was more critically affected by the strain rate compared to SLM H13. SLM processing for SKD61therefore shows higher potential for advanced tool design than for H13.

Research Highlights: The study determined that selective thinning causes different responses, the initial size of the tree released is an influential factor in the growth of species. The temporality of climate and physiological conditions of each species are influential in the growth. It is evident that the defoliation of certain species is an important factor that limits the growth of the species causing thinning to have a negative response. Background and Objectives: The objective is to analyze the behavior of nine timber species, respective to diametric growth after their liberation. This research aims to answer the following questions: (i) How do the selected tree species react to the liberation? (ii) Can the productivity of the trees (diametric growth) be enhanced by liberation? (iii) Are there other factors that influence the diametric growth of the released trees? Materials and Methods: The study was executed in the “Reserva Biológica San Francisco” were 488 trees were monitored, including nine timber species. Therefore, 197 trees were released (removal of competitors) and 251 trees served as reference. To check whether the initial DBH or other factors, like the selective thinning or climate conditions, determine the diameter growth a linear mixed model GLMM was applied. To adjust the linear mixed model a one-way Anova test was executed. Results: Timber species responded differently to the thinning in comparing to reference trees. Therefore, the species analyzed were separated into three groups (positive, negative, and no response to liberation). Conclusions: Liberation potentiates the growth of certain timber species that do not defoliate and considered semi-tolerant to shade. Precipitation and temperature affect all species, but in the defoliate species, it would not be convenient to release them or at least the evidence of these first three years does not show clear differences with control trees. Increase in trees released are higher in trees of the first two diametric classes in all species, this means that larger trees (i.e., older) release does not affect them in a positive way so release should occur in the youngest trees.

A study of photovoltaic solar window technologies is reported, focusing on their structural features, functional materials, system development, and suitability for use in practical field applications, e.g. public infrastructures and agricultural installations. Energy generation performance characteristics are summarized and compared to theory-limit predictions. Working examples of pilot-trial solar window-based installations are described. We also report on achieving electric power outputs of about 25 W_p/m² from clear and transparent large-area glass-based solar windows.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of a freeform fabrication of porous ceramic parts through selective laser sintering (SLS). SLS was proposed to manufacture ceramic green parts because this additive manufacturing technique can be used to fabricate three-dimensional objects directly without a mold, and the technique has the capability of generating porous ceramics with controlled porosity. However, ceramic printing has yet fully achieved its 3D fabrication capabilities without using polymer binder. Except for the limitation of high melting point, brittleness and low thermal shock resistance from instinct ceramic material properties, the key hurdle lies on very poor absorptivity of oxide ceramics to fiber laser which is widely installed in the commercial SLS equipment. An alternative solution to overcome the poor laser absorptivity via improving material compositions was presented in this study. The positive effect of carbon additive on the absorptivity of silica powder to fiber laser will be discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the SLS process, 3D porous silica structures were successfully prepared and characterized.

This paper presents a new algorithm to solve the optimal reconfiguration problem in distribution networks, using the algorithm called Improved Simulated Annealing combined with Hybrid Cooling (ISA-HC) and Selective Space Search, which leverages the capabilities of the Open Distribution System Simulator (OpenDSS) software and the selective space search concept to enhance performance and reduce the search space. The ISA-HC algorithm determines an adequate starting point for the temperature and initial solution according to the size of the system. For adequate cooling, a three-stage cooling approach was employed to achieve effective cooling, combining two methods widely used in the literature. Overall, the ISA-HC algorithm is a promising method for solving the optimal reconfiguration problem in distribution networks. The algorithm was tested on the systems of 5, 33, 69, and 94 buses and compared to other existing methods in the literature. The results show that the proposed method is more robust and efficient, providing better convergence and reliably achieving good-quality global solutions

A new Mg-Zn-Zr-Ca alloy in powder state was obtained via mechanical alloying method, from pure elemental powder. Further, the obtained powder-alloy was processed by selective laser melting (SLM) procedure to obtain 3D printed samples for small biodegradable implants. A series of microstructural, mechanical and corrosion analysis were performed. The SEM analysis of powder-alloy reveal a good dimensional homogeneity, with uniform colored, no agglutinated and almost rounded particles, suitable for selective laser melting procedure. Further, the SLM samples reveal a robust and unbreakable morphology, with a suitable porosity and without undesirable balling effect. The tested Young’s modulus of the SLM samples, of 42 GPa, is close to cortical bone one, of 30 GPa. The corrosion tests performed in PBS (Phosphate-buffered saline) solution show that the corrosion parameters have a satisfactory evolution.

Statistical analysis of mechanical properties of thin-walled samples (~500 microns) obtained by selective laser melting from AlSi10Mg material and subjected to heat treatment for 1 hour at temperatures from 260 °C to 440 °C (step of aging temperature change 30 °C) has shown that the maximum strain hardening in the stretching diagram section from yield strength to tensile strength is achieved at the heat treatment temperature equal to 290 °C. At carrying out of correlation analysis statistically significant positive correlation between deformation corresponding to yield strength and the sum of heights of the largest protrusions and depths of the largest depressions of the surface roughness profile within the basic length of the sample (Rz) and the full height of the surface roughness profile (Rmax) was established. It was found that the reason for the correlation is the presence of cohesive states between the extreme values of the surface roughness profile that persist along the entire length of the specimen.

RNA interference (RNAi) using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) is a powerful tool to target any protein of interest and is becoming more implementable for in vivo applications due to recent developments in RNA delivery systems. To exploit RNAi for cancer treatment, it is expedient to increase its selectivity by e.g. a prodrug approach to activate the siRNAs upon external triggering, e.g. by using light. Red light is especially well suitable for in vivo applications due to its low toxicity and higher tissue penetration. Known molecular (not nanoparticle based) red light activatable siRNA prodrugs rely on singlet oxygen (1O2) mediated chemistry. 1O2 is highly cytotoxic. Additionally one of the side products in the activation of the known siRNA prodrugs is anthraquinone, which is also toxic. We here report on an improved red light activatable siRNA prodrug, which do not require 1O2 for their activation. The 5’ terminus of its antisense strand is protected with an electron-rich azobenzene promoiety. It gets reduced and cleaved upon red light exposure in the presence of Sn(IV)(pyropheophorbide a)dichloride acting as a catalyst and ascorbate required as a bulk reducing agent producing active siRNAs.

The high entropy alloy (HEA) of equiatomic composition CrNiFeCoMn and with FCC crystal structure was additively manufactured with a selective laser melting (SLM) process starting from mechanically alloyed powders. The as produced alloy shows finenitride and  phase pre-cipitates, which are Cr-rich and stable up to about 900 K. The precipitates increase in number and dimensions after long-period annealing at 900-1300 K, with a change in the HEA mechanical properties. Higher aging temperatures in furnace, above 1300 K, turn the alloy in a single FCC structure, with disappearance of the nitrate and  phase precipitates inside the grains and at the grain boundaries, but with still a presence of a finer Cr-rich nitride precipitation phase. These re-sults suggest that the as-produced HEA is a supersatured solid solution at low and intermediate temperature with nitrides and  nanostructures.

The mechanical properties and stability of hydrophobic surface structures prepared by traditional methods are still the main technical bottlenecks restricting the broad application of hydrophobic systems on workpiece surfaces. In this contribution, we propose a technique called selective laser shock peening (SLSP) to enable large-scale high efficient, low-cost manufacturing of hydrophobic metal surfaces with enhanced mechanical properties for durable applications. Using the method of experimental investigation combined with numerical calculation, the hydrophobic properties, mechanical properties, and tribological properties of the samples prepared under SLSP, all-laser shock peening (ALSP), and non-laser shock peening (NLSP) are studied. The SLSP process could prepare a 3D gradient structure material with surface structures, a two-phase (strong phase, soft phase) distribution on the surface, and a multi-level gradient distribution in the thickness direction. Compared with the 2D gradient structure prepared by the traditional process, 3D gradient structures by SLSP have more significant advantages in improving the wetting behavior and the mechanical properties of the material, which proves SLSP to be a novel method to fabricate functional metal surface structures, with highly high engineering application value.

The current study evaluates the selection signals in the evolution of mitochondrial DNA of voles, subfamily Arvicolinae, during the colonization of subterranean environments. The comparative sequence analysis of mitochondrial protein-coding genes of eight subterranean vole species (Prometheomys schaposchnikowi, three species of the genus Ellobius: E. talpinus, E. fuscocapillus and E. lutescens, two species of the genus Terricola: T. subterraneus and T. daghestanicus, Lasiopodomys mandarinus and Hyperacrius fertilis) and their closest aboveground relatives using codon-substitution models was applied. The highest number of selection signatures was detected in genes ATP8 and CYTB. The relaxation of selection was observed in most mtDNA protein-coding genes. In mole voles (genus Ellobius) the signatures of adaptive evolution of mitochondrial genes related to subterranean niche were most pronounced. The number of selection signatures was found to be independent of the evolutionary age of the lineage but fits the degree of specialization to the subterranean niche. The common trends of selective pressures were observed among the evolutionary ancient and highly specialized subterranean rodent families and phylogenetically young lineages of voles. It suggests that the signatures of adaptations in individual mitochondrial protein-coding genes associated with the colonization of the subterranean niche may appear within a rather short evolutionary timespan.

The corrosion morphology in grade 2205 duplex stainless steel wire has been studied to understand the nature of pitting and the causes of the ferrite phase's selective corrosion in acidic NaCl solution. It is shown that the corrosion mechanism is always pitting, which either manifests lacy cover perforation or densely-arrayed selective cavities developing on the ferrite phase. Pits with a lacy metal cover form in concentrated chloride solutions, whereas the ferrite phase's selective corrosion develops in diluted electrolytes, showing dependency on the chloride-ion concentration. The pit perforation is probabilistic and occurs on both austenite and ferrite grains. The lacy metal covers collapse in concentrated solutions but remain intact in diluted electrolytes. The collapse of the lacy metal cover happens due to hydrogen embrittlement. Pit evolution is deterministic and occurs selectively in the ferrite phase in light chloride solutions.

The energy transfer process of laser selective melting is very complex. To study the effect of la-ser selective melting on the microstructure and properties of 18Ni-300 martensitic steel, ABAQUS was used to simulate the temperature of laser cladding 18Ni-300 martensitic steel at different time points and different laser power. The results show that the cross-section shape of the molten pool changes from round to oval With the increase of laser power, the higher the peak value of temperature time curve, the greater the temperature gradient; and the laser clad-ding experiment of 18Ni-300 martensitic steel was carried out, and the microstructure and me-chanical properties of the samples under different laser power were analyzed. The results show that with the increase of laser power, the grain size of the cladding layer becomes smaller and the microstructure becomes more compact; the hardness of the side surface of the sample is higher than that of the upper surface, and the tensile strength and elongation show a trend of first increasing and then decreasing.

Gender differences have been documented in the prevalence of psychological symptoms. Tic disorders and ASD are more common in male clinical samples, while selective mutism and trichotillomania are more common in female clinical samples. In a review of 84 published case studies of Japanese children, this study explores gender differences in the prevalence of four categories of symptoms and expressions made in therapy for tics, selective mutism, trichotillomania, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Case studies were evaluated using both qualitative coding and statistical analysis. The findings were mostly consistent with epidemiological surveys and empirical research on adults. The gender differences in symptom prevalence and their expression can be summarized as differences in more direct aggression for boys versus indirect aggression for girls. The objective and progress in the therapy are to control impulsive energy for boys and to express energy for girls.

Abstract: The quantitative analysis of the chromatographic behavior of basic compounds was performed in silico. The liquid chromatography (LC) data measured with pentyl-, hexenyl-, and octyl-bonded silica gels were analyzed in silico employing model phases. The main retention force was the van der Waals (VW) interaction, and the main desorption force was an electrostatic (ES) interaction. The contribution of hydrogen bonding (HB) was weak compared to that for acidic compounds. The quantitative explanation was achieved utilizing the calculated VW, HB, and ES energy values obtained from a molecular mechanics program. The electron localization was observed at the molecular interaction-site calculated MOPAC program. This fundamental approach was like that of explaining chemical reactions. The difference was electron localization in chromatography or electron transfer in a chemical reaction.

Glucocorticoids (GC) are widely used in the treatment of hematological malignancies; however, the long-term treatment lead to atrophic and metabolic adverse effects. Selective glucocorticoid receptor agonists (SEGRA) with reduced side effects could be the better GC alternative. More than 30 SEGRA were described but none of them reached clinical trials as anticancer treatment. In the present work, we proposed the novel approach to broaden the list of potential SEGRA by synthesis of derivatives of synephrine, the molecule of natural origin. We synthesized 26 compounds from the class of synephrine derivatives, and studied their anticancer effect in vitro in leukemia and lymphoma cells with MTT assay as well as their potential affinity to glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in silico using molecular docking approach. Novel derivative 1-[4-(benzyloxy)phenyl]-2-(hexylamino)ethanol (10S-E2) with the highest GR affinity in silico revealed the micromolar range cytotoxicity in lymphoma and leukemia cells after 24 h of treatment. The other compound, 2-(hexylamino)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)ethanol (13S-G2) with high GR affinity demonstrated cytotoxicity in the range of 50-70 µM. Overall, our results provide the rationale for the development and further investigation of synephrine derivatives as SEGRA with anticancer activity.

SPH5030 is developed to improve the selectivity of irreversible HER2 inhibitors, which shows excellent activity and better HER2 selectivity against four common HER2 mutants than neratinib and pyrotinib, and consumed to attenuate the off-target adverse events in patients. To comprehensively evaluate SPH5030, the preclinical pharmacokinetic studies of SPH5030 were systematically completed, including in vivo pharmacokinetic, tissue distribution and excretion in Sprague Dawley rats and Cynomolgus monkeys, as well as in vitro drug-drug interaction assessment and metabolite identification in different species. The results showed low clearance, reasonable bioavailability and widely tissues distributed properties, and mainly excreted in the feces in rats. In vitro studies SPH5030 showed stable metabolism and metabolized mainly by CYP3A4/5 and CYP2C8, with no or weak inhibitory potential on CYP450 enzymes and efflux transporters. In Phase I clinical trials, SPH5030 also showed well tolerated at doses ranging from 50 to 600mg and is expected to have an ideal clinical application prospect in the future.

Wavelength selective switches (WSSs) are essential elements for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks, as they offer cost-effective, high port-count and flexible spectral channel switching. This work proposes a new hybrid WSS architecture that leverages the beam shaping and steering features of uniform silicon nitride (SiN) based end-fire optical phased arrays (OPAs). By introducing beamforming to a WSS system, the spectral channels on the liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) panel can be tailored and arranged properly, depending on the optical configuration, using the beam control capabilities of OPAs. Combining 3D-FDTD and ray tracing simulations, the study shows that by reducing the input beam dimensions with proper sizing of the OPAs, the WSS design with the null-steering OPAs layout and 4×No switch size features increased spectral resolution. This extensive beamforming study on the steering-enabled layout reveals the acquirement of an even higher input channel number, achieving up to the 8×No WSS scheme with flexible channel routing on the LCoS panel. Such implementation of beamsteerers can unlock an extra degree of freedom for the switching capabilities of hybrid WSS devices. The results show great promise for the introduction of OPAs in WSS systems and provide valuable insight for the design of future wireless communication links and WDM systems.

We introduce a novel method for fabricating perovskite solar modules using selective spin-coating on various Au/ITO patterned substrates. These patterns were engineered for twofold purposes: (1) to enhance selectivity of monolayers primarily self-assembling on the Au electrode, and (2) to enable seamless interconnection between cells through direct contact of the top electrode and the hydrophobic Au connection electrode. Utilizing SAMs-treated Au/ITO, we achieved sequential selective deposition of the electron transport layer (ETL) and the perovskite layer on the hydrophilic amino-terminated ITO, while the hole transport layer (HTL) was deposited on the hydrophobic CH3-terminated Au connection electrodes. Importantly, our approach had negligible impact on the series resistance of the solar cells, as evidenced by the measured specific contact resistivity of the multilayers. A significant outcome was the production of a 6-cell series-connected solar module with a notable average PCE of 8.32%, providing a viable alternative to the conventional laser scribing technique.

In this study, the effect of increasing exposure time on microstructures, defectiveness, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of selective laser melted sample Al-Si10-Mg powder have been investigated. The sample were processed at the same power (375 W) and scan speed (2000 mm/s) but with increasing exposure time. Exposure time equal to 40, 50 and 60 µs was applied. The features of the analyzed samples show that with increasing exposure time a better efficiency of the heat input has been obtained with larger size of melting pool and Si particles and lower defectiveness. Moreover, being the coarser microstructure associated a to lower level of voids, the average hardness is similar for the analyzed samples. The potentiodynamic curves of the samples show that the voids occurrence is more significant with respect to the scale of micro-structure on corrosion behavior being the sample processed at the highest exposure time the more resistant to corrosion. The experimental techniques used in the present study were Optical microscope, Sem microscope, Hardness and X-Ray Computed Tomography.

Enterocins are bacteriocins synthesized by Enterococcus strains that show an interesting antimi-crobial effectiveness against foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes. The objectives of this study were identify and analyze the expression of enterocin genes of Enterococcus isolated from breast-fed infants and evaluate the ability to inhibit three human isolates of virulent Lis-teria monocytogenes, as well as some probiotic bacteria. The susceptibility of the strains of L. mon-ocytogenes to fifteen antibiotics was tested, detecting resistance to cefoxitin (constitutive-ly resistant), oxacillin and clindamycin. Production of enterocins A, B and P were observed in Enterococcus faecium isolates, and enterocin AS-48 in an Enterococcus faecalis isolate. AS-48 showed antilisterial activity by itself, while the joint action of enterocins A and B, or B and P was neces-sary for inhibiting L. monocytogenes, demonstrating a synergistic effect of those combinations. The presence of multiple enterocin genes does not assured the inhibition of L. monocytogenes strains. However, the expression of multiple enterocin genes showed a good correlation with the inhibition capacity of these strains. Furthermore the potential beneficial strains of lactobacil-li and bifidobacteria examined were not inhibited by any of the enterocins produced individu-ally or in combination, with the exception of Bifidobacterium longum BB536, which was inhibited by enterocin AS-48 and the joint production of enterocins A and B or B and P. The enterocins studied here could be candidates for developing alternative treatments against antibi-otic-resistant bacterial infections. Moreover, these selected enterocin-producing E. faecium strains isolated from breast-fed infants could be used as probiotic strains due to their antilisterial effect as well as the absence of virulence factors.

The development of the additive manufacturing (AM) technology proffers challenging requirements for forming accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, a hybrid additive manufacturing technology combining fusion-based selective laser melting (SLM) and solid-state cold spraying (CS) was proposed in order to enable the fast production of near-net-shape metal parts. The idea is to fabricate a bulk deposit with a rough contour first via “fast” CS process and then add fine structures and complex features through “slow” SLM. The experimental results show that it is feasible to deposit SLM part onto CS part with good interfacial bonding. However, the CS parts must be subject to heat treatment to improve their cohesion strength before being sending for SLM processing. Otherwise, the high tensile residual stress generated during SLM process will cause fracture and cracks in the CS part. After heat treatment, pure copper deposited by CS undergoes grain growth and recrystallization, resulting in improved cohesive strength and release of the residual stress in the CS parts is released. The tensile test on the SLM/CS interfacial region indicates that the bonding strength increased by 38% from 45±7 MPa to 62±1 MPa after the CS part is subject to heat treatment, and the SLM/CS interfacial bonding strength is higher than the CS parts. This study demonstrates that the proposed hybrid AM process is feasible and promising for manufacturing free-standing SLM-CS components.

Since Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) was recognized as a gas transmitter, its detection and quantifica-tion have become a hot research topic among chemists and biologists. In this area. fluorescent probes have shown great advantages: fast and strong responds, low detection limit and easy ma-nipulation. Here we developed a new fluorescent probe that detected H2S selectively among various bioactive and inorganic salts. This probe was based on the core structure of fluorescein and reacted with H2S through azide-reduction. Great linearity was achieved correlating fluores-cence intensity and H2S concentrations in solution. The detection of H2S in cancer cells was also achieved.

The substrate N1, N3, N5 -tris(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (Sensor A) was prepared in the reaction of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (trimesic acid) and o-aminophenol in ethanol. The prepared organic sensor fulfills the chemiluminescent requirements including luminophore, spacer, and suitable binding receptor that distress the probe's luminescent features, providing selective and sensitive detection of mercury and iron ions in aqueous solutions. The sensor selectively detects mercury and iron ions in a water matrix containing various metal ions including sodium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and nickel. Strong and immediate binding was observed between mercury ions and the substrate at pH 7.0 with a binding affinity toward Hg (II) enhanced by nine folds higher than that observed for iron sensor binding affinity, which makes the substrate a distinctive luminescence sensor for mercury detection at ambient conditions. The sensor shows a linear response toward Hg (II) in the concentration range from 4.2 x 10-5 to 2.0 x 10-8 M with a limit of detection of 1.0 x 10-8 M. Further, Sensor A provides linear detection for iron ions in the range from 1.5 x 10-3 to 1.5 x 10-8 M. The measured adsorption capacity of Sensor A toward mercury ions ranged from 1.25 to 1.97 mg/g and the removal efficiency from water samples reached 98.8% at pH 7.0. The data demonstrate that Sensor A is an excellent probe for detecting and removing mercury ions from water bodies.

Abstract: The high entropy alloy (HEA) of equiatomic composition CrNiFeCoMn and with FCC 11 crystal structure was prepared by either induction melting and additive manufacturing with a se- 12 lective laser melting (SLM) process, starting from mechanically alloyed powders. Unlike induction 13 melting, the as-produced SLM alloy showed fine nitride and Cr-rich s phase precipitates. Mechan- 14 ical spectroscopy measurements were performed on specimens cold worked and/or recrystallized. 15 Young’s modulus values of (140±10) GPa and (90±10) GPa were measured at 300 K for induction 16 melted and SLM samples, respectively. The values increased to (160±10) GPa and (170±10) GPa for 17 recrystallized samples. Damping measurements as a function of temperature showed two peaks 18 which were attributed to dislocations bending and grain boundaries sliding. The peaks were super- 19 posed on a temperature increasing background.

In order to understand the evolution of multicellularity, we must understand how and why selection favors the first steps in this process: the evolution of simple multicellular groups. Multicellularity has evolved many times in independent lineages with fundamentally different ecologies, yet no work has yet systematically examined these diverse selective drivers. Here we review recent developments in systematics, comparative biology, paleontology, synthetic biology, theory, and experimental evolution, highlighting ten selective drivers of simple multicellularity. Our survey highlights the many ecological opportunities available for simple multicellularity, and stresses the need for additional work examining how these first steps impact the subsequent evolution of complex multicellularity.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is a commonly used laser powder bed technique where the final properties are influenced by many different powder related properties, such as particle size distribution, chemical composition and flowability. In applications where high hardness, wear resistance, strength and good heat properties are required, high speed steels (HSS) are widely used today. HSS has high carbon content and are therefore considered as unweldable. The rapidly growing implementation of AM technologies has led to a growing range of new applications and demands for new alloys and properties. The interest in being able to manufacture HSS by SLM without cracking is therefore increasing. In SLM, it is possible to preheat the base plate to a few hundred degrees Celsius which has been used for HSS and proved successful due to reduced thermal gradients. In this study, the properties of SLM produced high speed steel PEARL Micro®2012 with a carbon content of 0.61 wt.-% have been investigated and compared to those of a forged and rolled PM-HIP counterpart ASP®2012.

Ti6Al4V samples obtained by selective laser melting were subjected to acid treatment, chemical oxidation in hydrogen peroxide solution and subsequent thermochemical treatment. The effect of temperature and time of acid etching of Ti6Al4V samples on surface roughness, morphology, topography and chemical and phase composition after the thermochemical treatment was studied. The surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and contact profilometry. Pore and protrusion sizes were measured. Acid etching modified the elemental composition and surface roughness of the alloy. Temperature had a greater influence on the morphology, topography and surface roughness of samples than time. Increases in roughness values were observed when applying successive chemical oxidation and thermochemical treatment compared to the values observed on surfaces with acid etching. After the thermochemical treatment, the samples with acid etching at a temperature of 80 °C showed a multiscale topography. In addition, a network-shaped structure was obtained on all surfaces, both on their protrusions and pores previously formed during the acid etching.

Despite the implementation of control strategies, the invasive parasitic mite Varroa destructor remains one of the principal causes of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colony losses in numerous countries. For this reason, the parasite represents a serious threat to beekeeping and to agro-ecosystems that benefit from the pollination services provided by honey bees. Numerous selection programmes have been initiated over the last three decades with the aim of promoting the establishment of balance in the host–parasite relationship and, thus, helping European honey bees to survive in the presence of the parasite without the need for acaricide treatments. Such programmes have focused on either selective breeding for putative resistance traits or natural selection. To date, no clear overview of these attempts has been available, which has prevented building on past successes or failures and, therefore, hindered the development of a sustainable strategy for solving the V. destructor problem. In the present study, we review past and current selection strategies, report on their outcomes and discuss their limitations. Based on this state-of-the-art knowledge, we propose a strategy for increasing response to selection and colony survival against V. destructor infestations. Developing in-depth knowledge regarding the selected traits, optimising selection programmes and communicating their outcomes are all crucial to our efforts to establish a balanced relationship between the invasive parasite and its new host.

Temperature field is an essential attribute of metal additive manufacturing in view of its bearings on the prediction, control, and optimization of residual stress, part distortion, fatigue, balling effect, etc. This work provides an analytical physics-based approach to investigate the effect of scan strategy parameters including time delay between two irradiations and hatching space on thermal material properties and melt pool geometry. This approach is performed through the analysis of the distribution of material properties and temperature profile in three-dimensional space. The moving point heat source approach is used to predict the temperature field. To predict the temperature field during the additive manufacturing process some important phenomena are considered. 1) Due to the high magnitude of temperature in the presence of the laser, the temperature gradient is usually high which has a crucial influence on thermal material properties. Consequently, the thermal material properties of stainless steel grade 316L are considered to be temperature-dependent. 2) Due to the repeated heating and cooling, part usually undergoes several melting and solidification cycles. This physical phenomenon is considered by modifying the heat capacity using the latent heat of melting. 3) The multi-layer aspect of metal AM process is considered by incorporating the temperature history from the previous layer since the interaction of the successive layers has an impact on heat transfer mechanisms. 4) Effect of heat affected zone on thermal material properties is considered by the superposition of material properties in regions where the temperature fields of two consecutive irradiations have an overlap since the consecutive irradiations change the behavior of the material properties. The goals are to 1) investigate the effects of temperature-sensitive material properties and constant material properties on the temperature field. 2) Study the behavior of thermal material properties under different scan strategies. 3) Study the importance of considering the effect of heat affected zone on thermal material through the prediction of melt pool geometry. 4) Investigate the effect of hatching space on melt pool geometry. This work is purely employed physics-based analytical models to predict the behavior of material properties and temperature field under different process conditions, and no finite element modeling is used.

The dopamine D3 receptor is an important CNS target for the treatment of a variety of neurological diseases. Selective dopamine D3 receptor antagonists modulate the improvement of psychostimulant addiction and relapse. In this study, five and six featured pharmacophore models of D3R antagonists were generated and evaluated with the post-hoc score combining two survival scores of active and inactive. Among Top 10 models, APRRR215 and AHPRRR104 were chosen based on the coefficient of determination (APRRR215: R2training = 0.80; AHPRRR104: R2training = 0.82) and predictability (APRRR215: Q2test = 0.73, R2predictive = 0.82; AHPRRR104: Q2test = 0.86, R2predictive = 0.74) of their 3D-quantitative structure–activity relationship models. Pharmacophore-based virtual screening of a large compound library from eMolecules (> 3 million compounds) using two optimal models expedited the search process 100-fold speed increase compared to the docking-based screening (HTVS scoring function in Glide) and identified a series of hit compounds having promising novel scaffolds. After the screening, docking scores, as an adjuvant predictor, were added to two fitness scores (from the pharmacophore models) and predicted Ki (from PLSs of the QSAR models) to improve accuracy. Final selection of the most promising hit compounds were also evaluated for CNS-like properties as well as expected D3R antagonism.

For decades, the discoverability and visibility of a paper relied on the readership of the academic journal where the publication was issued. The public's increasing interest in scientific research, particularly in biomedicine, has led news media outlets to play a significant role in disseminating scientific advances. This investigation, which explores the potential impact of news media stories on the citations and altmetrics of a paper, was conducted with thoroughness and rigour. A total of 2020 open access biomedical research papers, all published in the same year, 2015, and in journals with an impact factor between 10 and 14, were investigated. The papers were split into two groups based on the sole criterion of receiving or not receiving news media coverage. Papers with news media coverage accounted for 44% of the total. They received, on average, 60% more citations, 104% more blogs, 150% more X posts, 106% more Facebook reports, 40% more Wikipedia references, 85% more videos, and 51% more Mendeley readers than papers without news media coverage. The correlation between news media outlets and increased citations and altmetrics is evident. However, the broader societal impact of news media coverage, in terms of bringing scientific matters or discoveries to the public eye, appears to be more robust when compared to the reactions of the scientific community.

Structural and functional materials are subjected to harsh oxidizing environments that lead to a rapid decline in their surface chemical stability. At high-temperatures, the diffusion of atoms is erratic; thus, the reactive elements (REs) get a chance to migrate to the surface and look for oxygen-reactive sites. Their migration from the lattice sites creates vacancies in the matrix and thus weakens the bond, making the material prone to environmental degrading factors. Subsequently, the inward diffusion of oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, or carbon may occupy these vacancies, resulting in undesired precipitation at the grain boundary, which is usually brittle. The solubility and dissociation of attacking species and corrosion products play the most critical role in corrosion in high-temperature water. To evade such situations, Ti, Al, and Cr are added in Ni/Fe-based alloys, forming a dense oxide layer on the surface that impedes further surface migration of ions. The stability of the alloys is then determined by the capability of these oxide layers to heal or reform during spalling/cracking. This review attempts to understand the migration of REs at the interfaces to prepare structural materials in any unexpected set of oxidizing service conditions. This review will also try to establish the interaction mechanism of REs novel/conventionally added in the alloys with the oxidizing elements in the environments to design better degradation-resistant high-temperature alloys.

Lattice structures have emerged as promising materials for aerospace structures applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratios, customizable properties, and efficient use of materials. These properties make them at-tractive for use in anti-ice systems, where lightweight and heat exchanging are essential. This paper presents an extensive experimental investigation into mechanical compression properties of lattice trusses fabricated from AlSi10Mg powder alloy, a material commonly used in casted aerospace parts. The truss structures were manufactured using additive manufacturing Selective Laser Melting technique and subjected to uniaxial compressive loading to assess their performance. The results demonstrate that AlSi10Mg lattice trusses exhibit remarkable compressive strength with strong correlations depending upon both topology and cells’ parameters setup. The finding described highlights the potential of AlSi10Mg alloy as a promising material for custom truss fabrication, offering customizable cost-effective and lightweight solutions for aerospace market. The paper also emphasizes the role of additive manufacturing in producing complex structures with pointwise tailored mechanical properties.

An original approach has been proposed for designing a nanofibrous (NFs) layer using UV-cured polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a matrix, incorporating mesoporous graphene carbon (MGC) nanopowder both inside and outside the fibres, creating a sandwich-like structure. This architecture is intended to selectively adsorb and detect acetic acid vapours, which are known to cause health issues in exposed workers. The nanocomposite MGC-PVP-NFs layer was fabricated through electrospinning deposition onto interdigitated microelectrodes (IDEs) and stabilised under UV-light irradiation. To enhance the adhesion of MGC onto the surface of the nanocomposite polymeric fibres, the layer was dipped in a suspension of polyethylenimine (PEI) and MGC. The resulting structure demonstrated promising electrical and sensing properties, including rapid responses, high sensitivity, good linearity, reversibility, repeatability, and selectivity towards acetic acid vapours. Initial testing was conducted in a laboratory using a bench electrometer, followed by validation in a portable sensing device based on consumer electronic components (by ARDUINO®). This portable system was designed to provide a compact, cost-effective solution with high sensing capabilities. Under room temperature and ambient air conditions, both laboratory and portable tests exhibited favourable linear responses, with detection limits of 0.16 and 1 ppm, respectively.

A review on planar printed structures that are based on Matryoshka-like geometries is presented. These structures use the well-known principle of Matryoshka dolls that are successively nested inside each other. The well-known advantages of the planar printed technology and of the meandered nested Matryoshka geometries are combined to generate miniaturized, multi-resonance and/or wideband configurations. Both metal and complementary slot structures are considered. Closed and open configurations are analyzed. The working principles are explored do get physical insight of their behavior. Low cost and single layer applications as frequency selective surfaces, filters, antennas, and sensors, in the microwave frequency region, are reviewed. Potential future research perspectives and new applications are discussed.

Crystalline phase engineering is a prominent strategy for synergistically optimizing the sur-face-body phases of a catalyst. In this work, TiO2 nanosheets assembled into nanotubes (TNSTs) with two-phases of anatase and rutile were firstly synthesized via crystal engineering by simple thermal annealing, and subsequently loaded with Ru nanoparticles to create efficient benzene hydrogenation catalyst Ru/TNSTs. The well- designed nanosheet-tubes structure boasts large specific surface area and excellent transmission channels, which effectively prevents the ag-glomeration and deactivation of loaded Ru nanoparticles, as well as promotes the internal diffu-sion in the reaction process of benzene hydrogenation to cyclohexene. Furthermore, titanium dioxide nanosheet-tubes contain numerous Ti3+ defects, which not only improves the overall generation rate of cyclohexene, but also enhances the suppression of cyclohexene adsorption. Most importantly, the two-phases of titanium dioxide increases the ratio of the electron defi-ciencies of Ru and promotes cyclohexene desorption. These synergistic properties enhance the selectivity and efficiency of the Ru/TNSTs catalysts, resulting in excellent performance in the hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene. Especially the Ru/TNSTs-4 catalyst achieves a 95% in-itial selectivity and 51% yield of cyclohexene in the reaction, outperforming most supported Ru-based catalysts. This work may provide new perspectives for designing efficient benzene hydrogenation catalysts via crystalline phase engineering.

The objective of the present report is the dissemination of information acquired during the application of ISO 6579-1:2017 for the isolation of Salmonella spp. from swine samples. ISO 6579-1:2017 is the officially recommended by the EU protocol for the isolation of Salmonella spp., aiming in the harmonization of effective successful control of Salmonella infection in food producing animals. Successful control of animal salmonellosis is highly dependent on the sensitivity of the biochemical methods reliably detecting the presence of the pathogen in various stages of food production. Application of ISO 6579-1:2017 resulted in the isolation of twelve Salmonella spp. and eighteen other members of the family of Enterobacteriaceae biochemically and antigenically resembling salmonellae. The findings necessitated in the depth evaluation of the culture media xylose-lysine-desoxycholate agar (XLD), Salmonella-Shigella Agar (SS), Brilliant Green Agar (BGA), Salmonella Chromogenic Agar (SCA), Triple Sugar Iron (TSI) and modified semi-solid Rappaport–Vassiliadis (MSRV) agar. The evaluation showed that these culture selective media differed significantly in their performance regarding the isolation of Salmonella from swine samples. It was concluded that the presence of atypical Salmonella strains negatively affects the prevalence of Salmonella, thus the identification of carrier pigs, eventually affecting the efficiency of control programs. Thus, doubtful results require additional biochemical testing for confirming the accuracy of such universally recommended isolation methods.

In this work, a ferrocene-containing gallic acid derivative modified carbon nanotubes paste electrode (Gal-Fc-CNT) obtained by simple mechanical mixing was studied for fast simultaneous voltammetric detection of doxorubicin (DOX), capecitabine (CPB) and cyclophosphamide (CPP) as cytostatic index by cumulative signal and selective detection of DOX. The electrochemical behaviors of individual and simultaneous DOX, CPB and CPP studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) on Gal-Fc-CNT electrode at various pHs and potential ranges allowed the development of simple simultaneous detection method as cytostatic index at pH of 12 using square-wave voltammetry technique operated at modulation amplitude of 100 mV, step potential of 4 mV, frequency of 25 Hz and 100 mV·s−1 potential scan rate that allowed better performance than reported electrodes. Faster and selective detection of DOX with the lowest limit of detection of 75 ng⸱L-1 was achieved using square-wave voltammetry technique operated at modulation amplitude of 100 mV, step potential of 4 mV, frequency of 50 Hz and 200 mV·s−1 potential scan rate. The good results obtained for real tap water assessment indicated the utility of Gal-Fc-CNT paste electrode for practical applications (water samples, pharmaceutical formulations).

Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are being used extensively in modern industries that require high strength-to-weight ratio such as aerospace, automotive, motorsport, and sports equipment. However, although reinforcement with carbon fibers improves the mechanical properties of polymer, this comes on the expense of abrasive wear resistance. Therefore, to efficiently utilize CFRPs in dry sliding contacts, solid lubricant is used as a filler. Further, to facilitate fabrication of objects with complex geometries, selective laser sintering (SLS) can be employed. Accordingly, in the present work, graphite-filled carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide 12 (CFR-PA12) specimens were prepared using SLS process to explore the dry sliding friction and wear characteristics of the composite. The test specimens were aligned along four different orientations in the build chamber of SLS machine to determine the orientation-dependent tribological properties. The experiments were conducted using pin-on-disc tribometer to measure the coefficient of friction (COF), interface temperature, friction-induced noise, and specific wear rate. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tribo-surfaces was conducted to specify the dominant wear pattern. The results indicated that the steady state COF, contact temperature, and wear pattern of graphite-filled CFR-PA12 are orientation-independent, and that the contact temperature is likely to approach an asymptote far below the glass transition temperature of amorphous PA12 zones, thus eliminating the possibility of matrix softening. Additionally, the results showed that the Z-oriented specimen exhibits the lowest level of friction-induced noise along with the highest wear resistance. Moreover, SEM of tribo-surfaces determined that abrasive wear is the dominant wear pattern.

The electrical performance of the back-channel etched Indium–Gallium–Zinc–Oxide (IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with copper (Cu) source and drain (S/D) which are patterned by a selective etchant was investigated. The Cu S/D were fabricated on molybdenum (Mo) layer to prevent the Cu diffusion to the active layer (IGZO). We deposited the Cu layer using thermal evaporation and performed the selective wet etching of Cu using non-acidic special etchant without damaging the IGZO active layer. We fabricated the IGZO TFTs and compare the performance in terms of linear and saturation region mobility, threshold voltage and ON current (ION). The IGZO TFTs with Mo/Cu S/D exhibits good electrical properties as the linear region mobility is 12.3 cm2/V-s, saturation region mobility is 11 cm2/V-s, threshold voltage is 1.2 V and ION is 3.16 x 10-6 A. We patterned all the layers by photolithography process. Finally, we introduced SiO2-ESL layer to protect the device from the external influence. The results show that the prevention of Cu and introduced ESL layer enhances the electrical properties of IGZO TFTs.

Primary hyperoxalurias (PHs) are a group of inherited alterations of the hepatic glyoxylate metabolism. PHs classification based on gene mutations parallel a variety of enzymatic defects, and all involve the harmful accumulation of calcium oxalate crystals that produce systemic damage. These geographically widespread rare diseases have a deep impact in the life quality of the patients. Until recently, treatments were limited to palliative measures and kidney/liver transplants in the most severe forms. Efforts made to develop pharmacological treatments succeeded with the biotechnological agent lumasiran, a siRNA product against glycolate oxidase, which has become the first effective therapy to treat PH1. However, small molecule drugs have classically been preferred since they benefit from experience and have better pharmacological properties. The development of small molecule inhibitors designed against key enzymes of glyoxylate metabolism is on the focus of research. Enzyme inhibitors are successful and widely used in several diseases and their pharmacokinetic advantages are well known. In PHs, effective enzymatic targets have been determined and characterized for drug design and interesting inhibitory activities have been achieved both in vitro and in vivo. This review describes the most recent advances towards the development of small molecule enzyme inhibitors in the treatment of PHs, introducing the multi-target approach as a more effective and safe therapeutic option.

At different heat treatment temperatures, the hardness and flexural strength of M2 high-speed steel selective laser melting (SLM) parts show mixed trends. When the heat treatment temperature is 260°C, the hardness and flexural strength of the M2 high-speed steel SLM part are decreased, but the hardness difference between the upper and lower surfaces of the M2 high-speed steel SLM part is also reduced. When the heat treatment temperature is 560°C, the hardness and flexural strength of the M2 high-speed steel SLM part are almost close to that of the original M2 high-speed steel SLM part, and the performance gradient in the sample is improved, and the overall structure is uniform. When the subsequent heat treatment temperature is 860 °C, the hardness of the SLM parts reaches a minimum, with an average value of 24 HRC. However, the flexural strength exceeds that of the original SLM parts. Moreover, the microstructure of the sample is uniform, which significantly improves the anisotropy of performance.

Industries that rely on additive manufacturing of metallic elements, especially biomedical companies, require material science-based knowledge of how process parameters and methods affect element properties, but such phenomena are incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the influence of selective laser melting (SLM) process parameters and additional heat treatment on mechanical properties. The research included structural analysis of residual stress, microstructure, and scleronomic hardness in low-depth measurements. Tensile tests with element deformation analysis using digital image correlation (DIC) were performed as well. Experiment results showed it was possible to observe the porosity growth mechanism and its influence on material strength. Elements manufactured with 20% lower energy density had almost half the elongation, which was directly connected with porosity growth during energy density reduction. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) treatment allowed for a significant reduction of porosity and helped achieve properties similar to elements manufactured using different levels of energy density.

Although the concept of additive manufacturing has been proposed for several decades, momentum of selective laser melting (SLM) is finally starting to build. In SLM, density and surface roughness, as the important quality indexes of SLMed parts, are dependent on the processing parameters. However, there are few studies on their collaborative optimization in SLM to obtain high relative density and low surface roughness simultaneously in the previous literature. In this work, the response surface method was adopted to study the influences of different processing parameters (laser power, scanning speed and hatch space) on density and surface roughness of 316L stainless steel parts fabricated by SLM. The statistical relationship model between processing parameters and manufacturing quality is established. A multi-objective collaborative optimization strategy considering both density and surface roughness is proposed. The experimental results show that the main effects of processing parameters on the density and surface roughness are similar. It is noted that the effects of the laser power and scanning speed on the above objective quality show highly significant, while hatch space behaves an insignificant impact. Based on the above optimization, 316L stainless steel parts with excellent surface roughness and relative density can be obtained by SLM with optimized processing parameters.

Cellular substructure has been widely observed in the sample fabricated by selective laser melting, while its growth direction and the crystallographic orientation have seldom been studied. This research tries to build a general model to construct the substructure from its two dimensional morphology. All the three Bunge Euler angles to specify a unique growth direction are determined, and the crystallographic orientation corresponding to the growth direction is also obtained. Based on the crystallographic orientation, the substructure in the single track is distinguished between cell-like dendrite and cell. It is found that, with the increase of scanning velocity, the substructure transits from cell-like dendrite to cell. The critical growth rate of the transition can be around 0.31 ms^-1.

Recent state-of-the-art scene text recognition methods have primarily focused on horizontal text in images. However, in several Asian countries, including China, large amounts of text in signs, books, and TV commercials are vertically directed. Because the horizontal and vertical texts exhibit different characteristics, developing an algorithm that can simultaneously recognize both types of text in real environments is necessary. To address this problem, we adopted the direction encoding mask (DEM) and selective attention network (SAN) methods based on supervised learning. DEM contains directional information to compensate in cases that lack text direction; therefore, our network is trained using this information to handle the vertical text. The SAN method is designed to work individually for both types of text. To train the network to recognize both types of text and to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed model, we prepared a new synthetic vertical text dataset and collected an actual vertical text dataset (VTD142) from the Web. Using these datasets, we proved that our proposed model can accurately recognize both vertical and horizontal text and can achieve state-of-the-art results in experiments using benchmark datasets, including the street view test (SVT), IIIT-5k, and ICDAR. Although our model is relatively simple as compared to its predecessors, it maintains the accuracy and is trained in an end-to-end manner.

The limitations of investment casting of cobalt-based alloys are claimed to be less problematic with significant improvements in metal additive manufacturing by selective laser melting (SLM). Despite these advantages, the metallic devices are likely to display mechanical anisotropy in relation to build orientations, which could consequently affect their performance ‘in vivo’. In addition, there are inconclusive evidence concerning the requisite composition and post-processing steps (e.g. heat-treatment to relieve stress) that must be completed prior to the devices being used. In the current paper, we evaluate the microstructure of ternary cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) and cobalt-chromium-tungsten (Co-Cr-W) alloys built with Direct Metal Printing and LaserCUSING SLM systems respectively at 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° inclinations (Φ) in as-built (AB) and heat-treated (HT) conditions. The study also examines the tensile properties (Young's modulus, E; yield strength, R_P0.2; elongation at failure, A_t and ultimate tensile strength, R_m), relative density (RD), and micro-hardness (HV5) and macro-hardness (HV20) as relevant physico-mechanical properties of the alloys. Data obtained indicate improved tensile properties and HV values after short and cost-effective heat-treatment cycle of Co-Cr-Mo alloy; however, the process did not homogenize the microstructure of the alloy. Annealing heat-treatment of Co-Cr-W led to significant isotropic characteristics with increased E and A_t (except for Φ = 90º) in contrast to decreased R_P0.2, R_m and HV values, compared to the AB form. Similarly, the interlaced weld-bead structures in AB Co-Cr-W were removed during heat-treatment, which led to a complete recrystallization in the microstructure. Both alloys exhibited defect-free microstructures with RD exceeding 99.5%.

Almost all modern inorganic light-emitting diode (LED) designs are based on double heterojunctions (DHJs) whose structure and current injection principle have remained essentially unchanged for decades. Although highly efficient devices based on the DHJ design have been developed and commercialized for energy-efficient general lighting, the conventional DHJ design requires burying the active region (AR) inside a pn-junction. This has hindered the development of emitters utilizing nanostructured ARs located close to device surfaces such as nanowires or surface quantum wells. Modern DHJ III-N LEDs also exhibit resistive losses which arise from the DHJ device geometry. The recently introduced diffusion-driven charge transport (DDCT) emitter design offers a novel way to transport charge carriers to unconventionally placed ARs. In a DDCT device, the AR is located apart from the pn-junction and the charge carriers are injected into the AR by bipolar diffusion. This device design allows the integration of surface ARs to semiconductor LEDs and offers a promising method to reduce resistive losses in high power devices. In this work, we present a review of the recent progress in gallium nitride (GaN) based DDCT devices, and an outlook of potential DDCT has for opto- and microelectronics.

This case report describes the innovative treatment of a 73-year-old woman with a Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) using Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) with Yttrium-90 resin microspheres. SFTs are rare tumors that pose significant treatment challenges, particularly in cases of recurrence or when the disease has metastasized. Systemic therapies often have limited effectiveness. In this case, the patient initially presented with a pelvic mass that was surgically resected, but she later developed metastatic disease in the liver. After experiencing severe side effects from targeted therapy with sunitinib, SIRT was chosen as an alternative treatment. Remarkably, the patient achieved substantial tumor reduction and symptom relief following this novel intervention. To our knowledge and following extensive literature search, this is the first documented instance of treating SFT with SIRT. It provides new insights into its potential as a therapeutic strategy, especially for cases where conventional treatments are inadequate or cause intolerable side effects. The success of SIRT, in this case, highlights its potential as a less invasive, locally targeted treatment option and may offer new hope for patients with similar conditions.

The utilization of selective laser melting (SLM) for high entropy alloys (HEAs) holds significant promise in commercial applications, and substantial experimental research efforts have been directed toward this domain. To take advantage of the reported experimental data of SLM manufactured (SLM-ed) HEAs and reduce unnecessary experimentation, this study incorporates machine learning (ML) techniques for the phase and tensile properties prediction of SLM-ed HEAs, thus presenting a novel avenue for accelerating the discovery of new SLM-ed HEAs. Through the adjustment of material descriptors and machine learning models, a model has been developed with an impressive accuracy of 93.8% in distinguishing between face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and dual-phase (FCC+BCC). Additionally, optimized models have been devised for the prediction of tensile properties, namely ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS), and elongation (δ), achieving noteworthy MAPEs (mean absolute percentage errors) of 10.33%, 8.55%, and 28.48%, respectively. Furthermore, several HEAs were fabricated using SLM, and the experimental outcomes exhibited a favorable alignment with the predicted results. These efforts carry significant implications in advancing the utilization of SLM for HEAs.

To enhance the applicability of dual-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) like Fe32Cr33Ni29Al3Ti3, fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM), a focus on improving their mechanical properties is essential. As part of this effort, heat treatment was explored. This study compares the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-printed sample with those cooled in water after undergoing heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1200 ℃ for 1 hour. Both pre- and post-treatment samples reveal a dual-phase microstructure comprising FCC and BCC phases. Although heat treatment led to a reduction in tensile and yield strength, it significantly increased ductility compared to the as-printed sample. This strength-ductility trade-off is related to changes in grain sizes with ultrafine grains enhancing strength and micron grains optimizing ductility, also the influence of the content of FCC/BCC phases and dislocation density. In particular, the sample heat-treated at 1000 °C for 1 hour and then water-cooled exhibited a better combination of strength and ductility, a yield strength of 790 MPa, and an elongation of 13%. This research offers innovative perspectives on crafting dual-phase HEA of Fe32Cr33Ni29Al3Ti3, allowing for tailorable microstructure and mechanical properties through a synergistic approach involving SLM and heat treatment.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and Sc are concentrated in aluminum production byproducts. The novel REEs recovery approach, which involves leaching by acid at a pH > 3 in the presence of MgSO4, results in the formation of a pregnant leach solution (PLS) with a low concentration of iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) and a large quantity of valuable elements. The ion exchange method was acknowledged as the most favorable method used to separate the REEs from PLS. This work studies the application of chelating resin Puromet МТS9580 in the sorption recovery of Sc from sulfate solutions. To analyze the static Sc sorption data, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models were used. The Langmuir isotherm model was the best fitted to the experimental data, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.983. The dynamic adsorption experiment was conducted using a PLS and a simulate solution without contaminants. Adsorption of Sc from the simulate solution was better fitted to the Thomas model with a Sc capacity greater than 7 mg mL–1. Because Ti had a gradual decrease in C/C0, which the Thomas model was unable to simulate, the modified dose-response (MDR) model fitted better with PLS. The NaHCO3 solution (200 g L–1) effectively desorbed Sc (&gt;98 %) from simulated and PLS solutions after 1.5 h of stirring in a batch mode.

An ultraviolet (UV) nanosecond pulsed laser with a wavelength of 355 nm was applied to anneal amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFT) at various laser beam powers ranging from 0 to 280 mW. Laser irradiation was selectively carried out on the a-IGZO channel area using the beam scanning method after the a-IGZO TFT was formed through indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode patterning and a subsequent lift-off process. After laser annealing, negative shifts in the threshold voltages and enhanced on-currents were observed at laser-beam powers ranging from 54 to 120 mW. No meaningful parameters were investigated for laser beams higher than 200 mW. By extracting the energy band gap and work function of a-IGZO from the transmittance and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) results, the ITO electrode/a-IGZO channel energy band structures were established under different laser annealing conditions, and the electron injection mechanism from the ITO to the a-IGZO channel was analyzed and optimized at a laser beam power of 120 mW. The results show that the electrical characteristics of the a-IGZO TFTs can be improved without any heat damage to the substrate because of the selective annealing process.

Transparent and high-hardness materials have become the object of wide interest. Most notably, it concerns technical glasses and crystals. A notable example is a sapphire – one of the most rigid materials having impressive mechanical stability and good optical properties. Nonetheless, using this material for 3D micro-fabrication is not straightforward due to its brittle nature. On the microscale, selective laser etching (SLE) technology is an appropriate approach for such media. Therefore, we present our research on c-cut crystalline sapphire microprocessing by using femtosecond radiation-induced SLE. Here we demonstrate a comparison between different wavelength radiation (1030 nm, 515 nm, 343 nm) usage for modification inscription and various etchants (Hydrofloridic acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide and Sulphuric and Phosphoric acid mixture) comparison. We show that regular SLE etchants such as Hydrofluoric acid or Potassium Hydroxide are unsuitable materials for selective sapphire laser etching. Meanwhile, a 78% sulphuric and 22% phosphoric acid mixture at 270°C temperature is a good alternative for this process. We present the changes in the material after the separate processing steps. Finally, a protocol for advanced sapphire structure formation and a few exemplary structures are presented.

Multilayer absorbers based on Cr2O3 and Cr, designed to improve the Solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency at mid temperatures in high vacuum flat thermal panel, are fabricated via sputtering deposition on bulk copper substrates and characterized by thermal and optical analysis. The refractive index of the single layers has been measured and used to estimate absorber thermal efficiency at the operating temperatures. Multilayers have been produced via sputtering deposition on bulk copper substrates. The absorber multilayers can be 10% more efficient than the commercial alternative at 250 °C operating temperatures, reaching 380 °C stagnation temperature without Sun concentration. The thermal stability has been checked at temperature of 400 °C in vacuum for four hours. High vacuum flat thermal collectors, equipped with the produced selective solar absorbers can obtain unprecedented performances and can give important contribution to the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy for efficient heat production.
