The experimental investigation of plant growth under space conditions is a necessary prerequisite of long-term space missions. Besides experiments in space, many studies are performed under simulated microgravity, using a clinostat. However, the Earth magnetic field is usually not taken into account in such investigations. Here, a self-designed and constructed system of coupled devices – a clinostat and a Helmholtz cage – is presented. The clinostat can, on the average, cancel the effective gravity field by using two independent rotations, enabling simulated zero-valued gravity experiments. Additionally, appropriately symmetrically mounted Helmholtz cage can be used to cancel the natural Earth magnetic field in the volume where the clinostat is located. The combination of these two devices offers the opportunity, e.g. for bio-inspired experiments in which plant cultivation can be carried out in conditions that imitate space environment. We provide information about the experimental setup and show first experimental results of growth tests.

Cellular therapies exhibit immense potential in treating complex diseases with sustained response. Manufacture of cell therapies involves purification and engineering of specific cells from a donor or patient to achieve a therapeutic response upon injection. Magnetic cell sorting targeting the presence or absence of surface markers is commonly used for upfront purification. However, emerging research is showing that optimal therapeutic phenotypes are characterized not only by the presence or absence of specific antigens but also on antigen density. Unfortunately, current cell purification tools like magnetic or fluorescence activated cell sorting lack the resolution to differentiate populations based on antigen density while maintaining scalability. Utilizing a technique known as Digital Magnetic Sorting (DMS) we demonstrate proof of concept for a scalable, magnetic based approach to fractionate cell populations based on antigen density level. Targeting CD4 on human leukocytes, DMS demonstrated fractionation into CD4High T cells and CD4Low monocytes/neutrophils as quantified by flow cytometry and single cell RNA sequencing. DMS also demonstrated high throughput processing at throughputs 5-10X faster than flow cytometry. We believe DMS can be leveraged and scaled to enable antigen density-based sorting in cell therapy manufacturing, leading to the production of more potent and sustainable cellular therapies.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS, has been an innovative method of demure neuromodulation. This paper aims to delve into the different forms of its existence and to evaluate the use of TMS in five psychiatric disorders; Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder, and major anxiety disorder. Literature pertaining to the use of TMS in treating these specific diseases will be analyzed, and its efficacy and mechanisms will be explored. The literature will be evaluated through sources with established facts and research studies demonstrating function, potency, or inefficacy. TMS poses a method to have a more explicit effect on the regions of the brain, and the exploration of its use in the treatment of psychiatric diseases poses new possibilities in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Venturing into the options it could have in a sole or combinatorial setting could provide penetrating insight into innovative forms of treatment and research.

The prevalence of cardiac amyloidosis (CA), especially as a cause of heart failure, has significantly increased in recent years. Early detection and accurate assessment of the disease burden are crucial for initiating timely treatment and ensuring precise prognosis. CA primarily results from the infiltration of the myocardium by either immunoglobulin light chain fibrils (AL) or transthyretin fibrils (ATTR), leading to restrictive cardiomyopathy and eventual death if untreated. Over the past decade, advancements in diagnostic imaging and heightened clinical awareness have revealed a substantial presence of CA, particularly ATTR, among the elderly. These diagnostic improvements encompass echocardiography, cardiac computerized tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, and radionuclide scintigraphy with bone-avid tracers. Concurrently, significant progress has been made in therapeutic options, with new disease-modifying treatments now available that can dramatically alter the disease trajectory and improve survival rates when administered early. However, despite these advancements, there remains an urgent need for the early and accurate detection of CA to ensure that patients can fully benefit from these emerging therapies.

Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with (3-aminopropylo)trietoksysilan (APTES) or N-carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) were proposed as nanocarriers of methotrexate (MTX) against ovarian cancer cell lines. The successful functionalization of the obtained nanostructures was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. Their potential zeta, magnetization, and hyperthermic properties were also explored. MTX was conjugated with nanocarriers by ionic bonds or by amide bonds. For all three types of nanostructures, the drug release kinetics were examined at different pH and temperatures. The MTT assay showed no toxicity of MNPs[APTES] and MNPs[CMC]. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the nanostructures with MTX attached was measured towards the ovarian cancer cells model sensitivity and resistance to methotrexate in simplistic 2D and spheroid 3D conditions. The results of cytotoxicity tests of the tested nanostructures showed similar values for inhibiting the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells as methotrexate in its free form. Conjugating MTX with nanoparticles allows the drug to be directed to the target site using an external magnetic field, reducing overall toxicity. Combining this approach with hyperthermia could enhance the therapeutic effect in vivo compared to free MTX, though further research on advanced 3D models is needed.

Magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) are traditionally applied to investigate the electronic structure of metals. In layered quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) materials the MQO have several qualitative features giving additional useful information, provided their theoretical description is developed. Within the framework of the Kubo formula and the self-consistent Born approximation, we reconsider the phase of beats in the amplitude of Shubnikov oscillations of interlayer conductivity in Q2D metals. We show that the phase shift of beats of the Shubnikov (conductivity) oscillations relative to the de Haas - van Alphen (magnetization) oscillations is larger than expected previously and, under certain conditions, can reach the value of π/2, as observed experimentally. We explain the phase inversion of MQO during the 3D - 2D crossover and predict the decrease of relative MQO amplitude of interlayer magnetoresistance in a strong magnetic field, larger than the beat frequency.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related mortality worldwide. In order to improve its overall survival, early diagnosis is required. Since current screening methods still face some pitfalls, such as high false positive rates for low-dose computed tomography, researchers are still looking for early biomarkers to complement existing screening techniques in order to provide a safe, faster and more accurate diagnosis. Biomarkers are biological molecules found in body fluids, such as plasma, that can be used to diagnose a condition or disease. Metabolomics has already shown to be a powerful tool in the search for cancer biomarkers since cancer cells are characterised by impaired metabolism, resulting in an adapted plasma metabolite profile. The metabolite profile can be determined using nuclear magnetic resonance, or NMR. Although metabolomics and NMR metabolite profiling of blood plasma are still under investigation, there is already evidence for its potential for early-stage lung cancer diagnosis, therapy response, and follow-up monitoring. This review highlights some key breakthroughs in this research field, where the most significant biomarkers will be discussed in relation with their metabolic pathways and in light of the altered cancer metabolism.

An association between subtle changes in T2 white matter hyper-intense signals (WMHS) de-tected in fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging (fbMRI) and congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has been established. The research aim of this study is to compare children with congenital CMV infection with neurodevelopment outcome and hearing deficit with and with-out WMHS in a prospective historic cohort of 58 fbMRIs. Of these, WMHS was detected in 21. The median infection week of the WMHS group was earlier than the normal fbMRI group (8 and 17 weeks of gestation respectively). The proportion of infants treated with valganciclovir in the WMHS group was distinctly higher. Hearing impairment was not significantly different be-tween the groups. VABS scores in all 4 domains were within normal range in both groups. The median score of the motor skills corrected for week of infection was better in the WMHS group. A multivariate analysis using week of infection interaction variable of WMHS and valganciclo-vir treatment showed better motor score outcomes in the valganciclovir treatment group despite earlier week of infection. WMHS was not associated with neurodevelopmental outcome and hearing deficit. In our cohort valganciclovir treatment may have a protective effect on fetuses with WMHS by improving neurodevelopment outcome.

This article theoretically derives the magnetic field and vector potential produced by a steady current I flowing in an arbitrary plane loop at an arbitrary point r. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the behavior of the magnetic field produced by loops of various shapes such as polygons, circles, ellipses, and p-norm balls. Taking the limit as the loop shrinks to a point and the current I grows to infinity so that the magnetic dipole moment m of the loop (defined as the current I times the vector area of the loop) is kept constant, the magnetic field and vector potential are theoretically shown to converge to those of an ideal point magnetic dipole m.

This study aimed to evaluate potential posttreatment changes in ADC values within the tissue surrounding the enhancing lesion, particularly in areas not exhibiting MRI characteristics of in-volvement. Additionally, the objective was to investigate the correlation between ADC values, treatment response, and survival outcomes in individuals diagnosed with gliomas. This retrospective study included a total of 49 patients that underwent either stereotactic biopsy or maximal surgical resection. Histologically confirmed as Grade III or IV gliomas, all cases adhered to the 2016 and 2021 WHO classifications, with subsequent radio-chemotherapy administered post-surgery. Patients were divided into two groups: short and long survival group. Baseline and follow-up MRI scans were obtained on a 1.5T MRI scanner. Two ROI circles were positioned near the enhancing area, one ROI in the NAWM ipsilateral to the neoplasm and another symmetrically in the contralateral hemisphere on ADC maps. At follow-up there was a significant difference in both ipsilateral and contralateral NAWM be-tween the two groups, -0.0857 (p=0.004) and -0.0607 (p=0.037), respectively. There was a weak negative correlation between survival and ADC values in ipsilateral and contralateral NAWM at the baseline with the correlation coefficient -0.328 (p=0.02) and -0.302 (p=0.04), respectively. The correlation was stronger at the follow-up. The findings indicate that ADC values in normal appearing white matter (NAWM) may function as a prognostic biomarker in patients with diffuse gliomas.

The transition region is a very thin but most peculiar layer in the solar atmosphere, located between the solar chromosphere and the corona. It is a key region for understanding the coronal heating, the solar eruptions triggering, and the origin of solar winds. Here, the gradients of all physical parameters are very high, including plasma density, ionization degree, temperature, and magnetic fields, etc. Therefore, the transition region should be highly dynamic, such as fast energy releasing and transporting, plasma heating, and even particle accelerating. They include two physical aspects: thermal and non-thermal processes. The thermal processes can be observed from the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission by multi-wavelength images. The non-thermal processes, however, should be related to radio emissions especially at millimeter wavelengths, and the frequency range should span from several GHz to beyond 300 GHz, and the emission mechanism should be highly related to the magnetic fields and variations. The ultra-wide broadband spectral observations at millimeter wavelengths with high spectral resolutions may provide rich dynamic information about the transition region, such as non-thermal energy release and transmission, the flows of plasma and energetic particles, the magnetic fields and their variations, the generation and transportation of various waves, and the formation and evolution of the source regions of solar eruptions. Here, we discussed the spectral characteristics of millimeter-wave emission from the transition region and proposed a new conception of ultra-wide broadband millimeter-wave spectrometers to observe them.

SmCo5 constitutes one of the strongest class of permanent magnets, which exhibit enormous uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and have a high Curie temperature. However, the performance of SmCo5 permanent magnets is hindered by a limited energy product and relatively high supply risk. Sm is a moderately expensive element among its group, and Co is a material more expensive than Fe, making SmCo5 magnets the most expensive class of permanent magnets. Subsequently, the need for new materials, with less content in critical and thus expensive resources, is obvious. A promising path of producing new compounds that meet these requirements is the chemically modification of established materials used in PM towards the reduction of expensive resources, for example reducing Co content with transition metals (like Fe, Ni) or using as substitutes raw rare earth materials with abundance greater than their demand, like Ce and La. Important instrument to achieve these goals are theoretical calculations, like Ab-initio methods, and especially DFT based calculations in predicting the possible stable RE-TM intermetallic compounds and their magnetic properties. This review aims to present the progress of recent years in the production of improved SmCo5 type magnets.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of fluctuations in the solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field parameters observed by Solar Orbiter and WIND spacecraft at different scales, ranging from ~10^3 to 10^7 km. We investigated two long observation intervals when the spacecraft were near the Sun-Earth line, during which the distance between the spacecraft was 0.1 and 0.5 AU respectively. It is analyzed how the fluctuation properties in different types of SW, associated with quasi-stationary and transient solar phenomena, transform on the way from the Sun to the Earth. It is shown that the time series behavior of the bulk speed subject to the least change even at the large distance between the observation points, while the time series of the IMF magnitude, components and proton density were significantly transformed even at the relatively short distance. Regardless of the assumed change in the absolute value of the parameters, the conducted statistical analysis shows that the characteristics of their fluctuations (including the level of intermittency) remains near constant regardless of the distance between the observation points and depends mostly on the type of the solar wind.

Active magnetic bearings have higher efficiency than other bearings because there is no physical contact. However, this benefit is mitigated by the addition of electrical power consumption. It is therefore important for magnetic bearings to have efficient power electronics. Gallium nitride-based transistors are a relatively new form of transistor which have shown to be more efficient than MOSFETs. There is an insufficient body of literature in the area of application of these transistors for magnetic levitation. This work presents a simple 1 degree-of-freedom voltage controlled levitation experiment in which levitation is achieved with both a gallium nitride transistor and a MOSFET.
Voltage losses and current consumption are measured when using each transistor during levitation. In particular, transients during open-to-closed and closed-to-open states are measured for PWM pulsing. It is found that the
gallium nitride transistor is superior in both switching time and efficiency in situ for magnetic levitation.

We studied the performance of a quantum magnetic Stirling cycle that uses a working substance composed of two entangled antiferromagnetic qubits (J) under the influence of an external magnetic field (Bz) and an uniaxial anisotropy field (K) along the total spin in the y-direction. The efficiency and work were calculated as a function of Bz and for different values of the anisotropy constant K given hot and cold reservoir temperatures. The anisotropy has been shown to extend the region of the external magnetic field in which the Stirling cycle is more efficient compared to the ideal case.

High-quality optical Fano resonances, which exist in a spherical dielectric microparticle in the spatial configurations of the "whispering-gallery modes" (WGMs) and recently are referred to as the “super-resonances”, possess extremal sensitivity not only to the micro-cavity size and shape but also to the optical properties of the particulate material. The increase in the power of light radiation coupling into a super-resonance can lead to the manifestation of strong optical nonlinearity of the resonator material due to the cubic nonlinearity (optical Kerr effect) and generation of free electron plasma in certain regions of the spherical microcavity. In fact, an optically linear medium of the resonance cavity transforms into a Drude-Kerr-type medium with a strong dependence on input laser intensity. With the help of the finite-elements numerical simulations, we theoretically analyze the transformations of the resonant contour for a number of high-quality WGMs excited in a lanthanum-glass microsphere exposed to an optical radiation of different intensity. We show that in a certain input intensity range, the competition of Kerr and plasma optical nonlinearities can stop and even reverse the Stokes shift of the super-resonance observed in a pure Kerr medium. Additionally, optical ionization and plasma generation within the mode volume significantly reduce the strength of the magnetic super-resonance and lead to its spoiling and frequency splitting.

Embryological development of pancreas is a complex phenomenon and therefore, it can have multiple developmental aberrations. Fortunately, majority of these pancreatic ductal anomalies are asymptomatic with no clinical relevance and are incidentally detected during diagnostic cross sectional imaging or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) or autopsy. Occasionally, pancreatic duct anomalies can result in symptoms like abdominal pain or recurrent pancreatitis. Also, accurate pre-operative diagnosis of ductal anomalies can prevent inadvertent duct injury during surgery. Conventionally, ERCP had been used for accurate diagnosis of pancreatic duct anomalies. However, because of being invasive and associated with risk of pancreatitis, it has been replaced with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). MRCP has demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of ductal anomalies which can be further improved with use of secretin enhanced MRCP. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a new diagnostic and interventional tool in the armamentarium of endoscopists and has demonstrated promising results in detection of pancreatic duct variations and anomalies. In this article, we will focus on the role of EUS in diagnosis of various pancreatic duct anomalies.

Background and objectivesː Physical examination is the predominant method for evaluating pelvic floor defects. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a radiological technique useful to identify the underlying defects of pelvic floor structures that require surgery. The primary aim was to find correspondence between the clinical and radiological staging of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) before and after vaginal surgery. A secondary endpoint was to investigate, through clinical and MRI findings if surgery influences continence mechanisms. Finally, we reported changes in the quality of life in women who underwent surgery for prolapse. Materials and methodsː Twenty-five women with prolapse stage ≥ 2 POP-Q were recruited in this prospective study. They underwent preoperative clinical examination, MRI at rest and under the Valsalva maneuver, and quality of life questionnaires. Three months after vaginal surgery they repeated clinical and radiological evaluation. Resultsː Twenty women completed the study. Both clinical and MRI evaluations showed an improvement in prolapse and symptoms after surgery. There were some discrepancies between clinical and radiological staging. MRI parameters did not show differences between pre and postoperative at rest; under the Valsalva maneuver instead, the measurements changed after surgery. Continence was not worsening by the widening of the vesicourethral angle. Patients reported improvement in quality of life. Conclusionsː MRI is an accurate and objective method to define the stage of prolapse but the clinical evaluation alone is sufficient to stage prolapse before surgery and evaluate the result at follow-up. It is an accurate method to visualize some pelvic structures that can be compromised because of pelvic organ prolapse. MRI showed that vaginal surgery doesn’t affect continence mechanisms.

Co-Zr amorphous alloys exhibit soft magnetic properties, whereas Co-rich crystalline magnetic phases in this alloy system display hard magnetic behaviour. In this study, an initial two-phase Co-Zr composite with an overall composition of 75 at.% Co and 25 at.% Zr was processed by high pressure torsion (HPT) and the effects of severe plastic deformation and subsequent thermal treatment on the structural evolution and its magnetic properties have been investigated. HPT processing allowed us to achieve an amorphous microstructure in the as-deformed state with low coercivity. To further tune magnetic properties and study the alloys’ crystallization behaviour, various annealed states are investigated. Microstructural properties are correlated to the magnetic properties and a decreasing coercivity with increasing annealing temperature is observed despite the onset of crystallization in the amorphous alloy. At higher annealing temperatures, coercivity increases again. The results appear promising to obtain tuneable rare-earth free magnetic materials by severe plastic deformation.

Breast cancer is the foremost common in women, and its early diagnosis will help treat and increase patients' survival. This review article aims to studies on recent findings of standard imaging techniques and their characteristics for breast cancer diagnosis and recent nanoparticles (NPs) which are used for breast cancer detection. Herein, The search was performed in the literature through scientific citation websites, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science until May 2023. A comprehensive study on different imaging modalities and NPs for breast cancer diagnosis is reviewed, and their successes, challenges, and limitations are discussed.

In this paper, a quick and efficient method for preparation of scopolamine hydrobromide with high purity was introduced, named as magnetic field induced crystallization. Based on the solubility difference between scopolamine and scopolamine hydrobromide, salifying crystallization was selected and then treated with the synergistic effect of magnetic field to achieve the aim of scopolamine purification. The effects of crystallization solvents and magnetic field intensity on the crystallization process of scopolamine hydrobromide, as well as the influnence of magnetic field on the crystal growth direction were investigated. The results revealed that after treatment under magnetic field, the shortened induction time (25.64%-75.46%), the increased purity of crystals (0.95%-2.92%) and the improved recovery rate (4.51%-10.78%) were achieved. Furthermore, we also found that magnetic field could destroy the hydrogen bond in the solution, and change the physical properties of the mother liquid, so as to promote the nucleation formation and crystal growth. The above experiments suggested that the external magnetic field has the potential to be a feasible method for scopolamine preparation.

Background: We designed a prospective study of diagnostic accuracy which compared pelvic MRI and 3D-EAUS versus pelvic MRI alone in the preoperative evaluation and postoperative outcomes of patients with perianal fistulas. Methods: The sample size was 72 patients and was divided into two imaging groups. MRI alone was performed in the first group. Both MRI and 3D-EAUS were performed in a parallel fashion in the second group. Surgical exploration took place after two weeks and was the standard reference. Park’s classification, presence of a concomitant abscess or a secondary tract and location of the internal opening were recorded. All patients were re-evaluated for complete fistula healing and fecal incontinence six months postoperatively. All the collected data was subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Group MRI included 36 patients with 42 fistulas. Group MRI + 3D-EAUS included 36 patients with 46 fistulas. The adjusted sensitivity and negative predictive value were 1.00 for most fistula types in the group of combined imaging. The adjusted specificity improved on intersphincteric fistulas in the same group. The adjusted balanced accuracy improved on all fistula types, except for rectovaginal. The combination of imaging methods showed improved diagnostic accuracy only on the detection of a secondary tract. Healing rate at six months was 100%. Fecal incontinence at six months didn’t present a statistically significant difference between the two groups (Fisher's exact test p-value > 0.9). Patients with complex perianal fistulas had a statistically significant higher probability to undergo a second surgery (x² test p-value=0.019). Conclusion: The combination of pelvic MRI and 3D-EAUS showed improved metrics of diagnostic accuracy and should be used in the preoperative evaluation of all patients with perianal fistulas, especially in those with complex type.

Our aim was to compare the inter-rater agreement of Transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) regarding diagnosing adenomyosis and for various predefined imaging features of adenomyosis in the same set of women. MRIs were assessed by four experienced radiologists and 2D TVS videoclips and 3D ultrasound volumes were assessed by five experienced sonographers. Each rater subjectively evaluated the presence or absence of adenomyosis, assessed various imaging. Fleiss kappa (κ) was used to reflect inter-rater agreement for categorical data and the Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to reflect the reliability of quantitative data. Agreement between raters for diagnosing adenomyosis was higher for TVS than for MRI (κ =0.42 vs.0.28). MRI had a higher inter-rater agreement in assessing wall asymmetry irregular Junctional Zone (JZ) presence of myometrial cysts, while TVU had a better agreement for globular shape. MRI showed a moderate-good reliability for measuring the JZ (ICC=0.57-0.82). For TVS, JZ was unmeasurable in > 50% of cases and the remaining cases had a low reliability (ICC=-0.31-0.08). We found that Inter-rater agreement for diagnosing adenomyosis was higher for TVS than for MRI, despite that MRI showed a higher inter-rater agreement in most specific features. Measurements of JZ in the coronal plane with 3D TVS were unreliable and thus unlikely to be useful for diagnosing adenomyosis.

In this study, the motion characteristics of soft alginate microrobots were investigated with wireless magnetic fields in complex fluidic environments. Our aim is to explore the various motion modes that arise as a result of shear forces in viscoelastic fluids. Polyacrylamide (PAA), a water-soluble polymer, was characterized to produce a dynamic environment with a non-Newtonian fluid. The robots were fabricated by an extrusion-based microcentrifugal droplet method. We successfully demonstrated the feasibility of both wiggling and tumbling motions using snowman-shaped microbots. It is found that wiggling motion is primarily influenced by the interaction between the viscoelastic fluid environment and the non-uniform magnetization of the microbots. Additionally, it is discovered that modifying the viscoelasticity properties of the fluid can affect the motion behavior of the microbots. Furthermore, we observed that swarms of microbots exhibit non-uniform behavior within complex environments. Our velocity analysis has provided valuable insights into the relationship between applied magnetic fields and motion characteristics, enabling a more realistic understanding of surface locomotion in the context of targeted drug delivery.

This study aimed to evaluate contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and compare breast lesions on CEM and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using 5 features. We propose to create a flowchart for BI-RADS classification of breast lesions on CEM based on the Kaiser score (KS) flowchart for breast MRI. Included were 68 subjects (women and men; median age 61.4 ± 11.6 years) who were suspected of having a malignant process in the breast based on digital mammography (MG) findings. The patients underwent breast ultrasound (US), CEM, MRI, and biopsy of the suspicious lesion. There were 47 patients with malignant lesions confirmed by biopsy and 21 patients with benign lesions, for each of which a KS was calculated. In the patients with malignant lesions, the MRI-derived KS was 9 (IQR 8-9), its CEM equivalent was 9 (IQR 8-9), and BI-RADS was 5 (IQR 4-5). In patients with benign lesions, MRI-derived KS was 3 (IQR 2-3), its CEM equivalent was 3 (IQR 1.7-5), and BI-RADS was 3 (IQR 0-4). There was no significant difference between the ROC-AUC of CEM and MRI (P=0.749). In conclusion, there were no significant differences in KS results between CEM and breast MRI. The KS flowchart is useful for evaluating breast lesions on CEM.

Fe rich soft magnetic alloys are candidates for applications as magnetic sensors and actuators. These alloys can also be added to hard magnetic compounds to obtain spring magnets. In this work we produce two nanocrystalline Fe-Zr-B-Cu alloys by the powder metallurgy powder technology of mechanical alloying. The increase of the boron content favors the reduction of the crystalline size. Thermal analysis (by differential scanning calorimetry) shows at temperatures between 450 and 650 K wide exothermic processes, associated with the relaxation of tensions of the alloys produced by milling. At high temperatures, a main crystallization peak is found. The apparent activation of this process was determined by Kissinger and isoconversional methods. The values are compared with those found in the scientific literature. Likewise, adapted thermogravimetry permits to determine the Curie temperature. The functional response has been analyzed by hysteresis loop cycles. According to the composition, the decrease of the Fe/B ratio diminishes the magnetic soft behavior.

The magnetic heating effect for the superconducting quarter-wave resonator (QWR) cavities is investigated, and the Q slopes of the superconducting cavities are measured with an increasing accelerating field. Physical phenomena for zero-temperature limit are introduced. Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) resistance and Casimir force are calculated for the zero-temperature limit. The vertical test is shown for the performance test of the quarter-wave resonator (QWR) cavities. The parameters for the quarter-wave resonator (QWR) cavity are presented. The Q slopes are measured as a function of an accelerating electric field at 4.2 K. The surface resistance of the superconducting cavity increases with an increasing peak magnetic field. The magnetic defects cause the degradation for the quality factor. From the magnetic degradation, we can find the magnetic moments of the superconducting cavities. All the quarter-wave resonator (QWR) cryomodules are installed in the tunnel, and beam commissioning is performed successfully.

In this study, a simple, easy and convenient fluorescent sensing system for detection of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) based on VEGF aptamers, aptamer-complementary fluorescence-labeled probe and streptavidin magnetic beads was developed in only one single tube. The VEGF is the most important biomarker in cancer angiogenesis, and is investigated that serum VEGF level was various according to the different type and course of cancers. Hence, efficient quantification of VEGF is able to improve the accuracy of cancer diagnosis and precision of disease surveillance. In this research, the VEGF aptamer was designed to be able to bind with the VEGF by forming G-quadruplex secondary structures, and then the magnetic beads would capture the none-binding aptamers due to none steric interference, and finally, the fluorescence-labeled probes were hybridized with the aptamers captured by the magnetic beads. Therefore, the fluorescent intensity in the supernatant would specifically reflect the present of VEGF. After an overall optimization, the optimal conditions for detection of VEGF were as followed, KCl, 50 μM; pH 7.0; aptamer, 0.1 μM and magnetic beads, 10 μL (4 μg/μL). The VEGF could be well quantified within a range of 0.2-2.0 ng/ml in plasma, and the calibration curve possessed a good linearity (y = 1.0391x + 0.5471, r = 0.998). The detection limit (LOD) was calculated to be 0.0445 ng/mL according to the formula (LOD = 3.3×σ/S). The specificity of this method was also investigated under the appearance of many other serum proteins, and the data showed the good specificity in this aptasensor-based magnetic sensing system. This strategy provided a simple, sensitive and selective biosensing platform for detection of serum VEGF. Finally, it was expected that this detection technique can be promoted to more clinical applications.

Graphene is perhaps the most prominent “Dirac material,” a class of systems whose electronic structure gives rise to charge carriers that behave as relativistic fermions. In multilayer graphene several crystal sheets are stacked such that the honeycomb lattice of each layer is displaced along one of the lattice edges. When subject to an external magnetic field, the scaling of the multilayer energy spectrum with the magnetic field, and thus the system’s thermodynamic behavior, depends strongly on the number of layers. With this in mind, we examine the performance of a finite-time endoreversible Otto cycle with multilayer graphene as its working medium. We show that there exists a simple relationship between the engine efficiency and the number of layers, and that the efficiency at maximum power can exceed that of a classical endoreversible Otto cycle.

In this study, the influence of the environment on soil conditions, e.g. heavy metals and soil magnetic susceptibility, on the total number of bacteria and the species of Bradyrhizobium in the field cultivation of the soybean variety Lissabon, the seeds of which had been inoculated with HiStick®Soy, were evaluated. Field experiments were carried out with the random plot method on the Cambisol with a texture of silt loam. The experiment consisted of 24 objects in six combinations and four replications using sewage sludge and fly ash. In the soil samples, the total number of bacteria and the number of the species of Bradyrhizobium were determined using the culture-plate method. The total content of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr, Hg, Fe) in the analyzed objects, compared to the limit values, allowed them to be classified as uncontaminated soils despite the application of sewage sludge and fly ash according to the experimental scheme, showed a significant difference between them. The study of the magnetic parameter χ indicated a significant differentiation between objects from 34.0 to 65.8 × 10-8m3kg-1. High correlation coefficients between χ and Fe (r = 0.789), Zn (r = 0.653), Cr (r = 0.617) and TOC (r = 0.949) indicated that the source of these elements was external organic matter. Biological tests (total content of bacteria and species of Bradyrhizobium) in different experimental variants indicated significant relationships between them and showed the resistance of the microbial community in the field cultivation of Lissabon soybean to heavy metal contamination from sewage sludge and fly ash.

Considerable efforts have been made in recent years to identify an optimal treatment method for the removal of antibiotics from wastewaters. A series of supramolecular organic-inorganic magnetic composites containing Zn-modified MgAl LDHs and Cu-phthalocyanine as photosensitizer have been prepared with the scope to β-lactam antibiotics removal from aqueous solutions. The characterization of these materials confirmed the anchorage of Cu-phthalocyanine onto the edges of the LDH lamellae, with a negligible part inserted in the interlayer space. The removal of β-lactam antibiotics occurred via a concerted adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. The efficiency of the composites was depending on i) the LDH: magnetic nanoparticle (MP) ratio, that is strongly correlated to the textural properties of the catalysts, and ii) the phthalocyanine loading in the final composite. A maximum of the efficiency was achieved with a removal of ~93% of antibiotics after 2h of reaction.

Inflationary model provides a conceptual explanation of the horizon problem, the flatness problem and may also suppress the over abundant magnetic monopoles predicted by Grand Unified Theories. Although various inflationary models have been proposed since 1981, difficulties like fine tuning is not only unsolved but also becomes severer in confrontation with data of Planck Satellite. This paper proposes an alternative model of inflation: the spontaneous symmetry breaking phase transition at early universe is only responsible for the production of magnetic monopoles expected by Grand Unified Theories; it is the subsequent energy release of monopole annihilation that drives the inflation. As a result, the early universe underwent a free expansion with a heat source originating in the annihilation, which expects a smooth, plateau-like potential consistent with the observational data. Beside interpreting a number of long standing inflationary problems, the new scenario predicts a significant increase of entropy during the inflation, and tends to produce large scale structures exceed scale of 300 million light-years correlated with a CMB smoothen and flatten by a simple dynamical mechanism.

A 9.4 T/400 MHz superconducting magnet with a warm bore of 60 mm is being designed. The 400 MHz NMR magnet is composed of 9 coaxial coils to generate a central field of 9.4 T. The magnetic field homogeneity is better than 4 ppm for 50 mm diameter spherical volume (DSV) and better than 1 ppb for 5 mm DSV. Three types of NbTi strands were used to reduce the cost of the superconducting materials. A preload with 80 MPa was exerted on the superconducting coils and over-banding with stainless steel was adopted to release the stress from the electromagnetic forces. The magnet will be operated in persistent mode with superconducting joints to reduce the field decay. The pulse tube cryocooler with a cooling capacity of 1 W at 4.2 K can be used to reduce the liquid helium evaporation and vibration during operation. The magnet will be equipped with Bi2223/AgAu HTS current leads to reduce the heat losses. In this paper, the design of the 9.4 T NMR superconducting coils, electromagnetic field calculations, and stress analysis of the superconducting coils were presented.

It is shown that the four fundamental physical forces, i.e. weak interaction, strong interaction, electromagnetism and gravity, all have their origin in the quark as the single true elementary particle.This requires conceiving the quark as a Dirac particle in a pseudo-tachyon mode, which possesses two real dipole moments: the common one associated with its angular momentum and a second one that is polarisable in a scalar field. This Dirac particle carries a regular charge magnetic monopole without Dirac’s string, theorized by Comay. The boson carrier of its field of energy is the gluon showing an exponential decay of its spatial range because of the influence of an omni-present energetic background field, known as the Higgs field, in this article interpreted as the Lambda in Einstein’s Field Equation.

In ref. [1], we pointed out that certain anomalies observed in the published data for ac magnetic susceptibility of a room temperature superconductor reported in Nature 586, 373 (2020) [2] would be cleared up once the measured raw data were made available. Part of the measured raw data were recently posted in arXiv:2111.15017 [3]. Here we report the results of our analysis of these raw data and our conclusion that they are incompatible with the published data. Implications of these results to the claim that the material is a room temperature superconductor are discussed.

Room temperature superconductivity has recently been reported for a carbonaceous sulfur hydride (CSH) under high pressure by Snider et al [1]. The paper reports sharp drops in magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature for five different pressures, that are interpreted as signaling a superconducting transition. Here I question the validity and faithfulness of the magnetic susceptibility data presented in the paper by comparison with the measured raw data reported by two of the authors of ref. [2]. This invalidates the assertion of the paper [1] that the susceptibility measurements support the case for superconductivity in this compound.

Brain development during the prenatal period is rapid and unparalleled by any other time during development. Biological systems undergoing rapid development are at higher risk for disorganizing influences. Therefore, certain prenatal exposures impact brain development, increasing risk for negative neurodevelopmental outcome. While prenatal exposures have been associated with cognitive and behavioral outcomes later in life, the underlying macroscopic brain pathways remain unclear. Here, we review studies investigating the association between prenatal exposures and infant brain development focusing on prenatal exposures via maternal physical health factors, maternal mental health factors, and maternal drug and medication use. Further, we discuss the need for studies to consider multiple prenatal exposures in parallel and suggest future directions for this body of research.

In this paper, after reviewing some of the most important concepts about Dark Matter and methods of its registration, in particular by using SQUIDs, a toy uniform model for Dark Matter and Dark Energy is proposed. In the frame of the model Dark Matter particles is interpreted as an excitation of Dark Energy field. The devices based on SQUID, in particular the SQUID-paramagnetic absorber and the SQUID-magnetostrictor systems, both suitable for investigations of above problems, are considered. Estimates, is carried out within this model, indicate the possibility of experimental detection of the "ether wind" pressure, created by the non-corpuscular incoming flow, corresponding to the galactic orbital motion of the Earth.

There are numerous challenges involved in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Globally, majority of people suffers from cancerous disease involving throat cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, cancerous brain tumor. Among these the most common ones is the lung cancer or lung carcinoma. The leading cause of the lung cancer is the smoking. Around 80% to 90% of deaths are caused due to Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The inadequate diagnostic techniques and low chances for the survival of lung cancer patients results from the lack of an early prognosis and incompetency in traditional therapies. However, such challenges involved in the prognosis and treatment of lung cancer are on decline with the progression in magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) technology. Many break-through discoveries and inventions have been made in the field of cancer therapy by using magnetic nanoparticles. The implication of nanotechnology has led to the recent advancement in nanomedicine field. This has encouraged the improvement in different therapeutic and diagnosis strategies employing nanotechnology. The generation of immense technological benefits for nanoparticles systems has been accredited to its remarkable nanoscale physico-chemical properties. This in turns provides the early detection of lung cancer and active drugs delivery for an improved theranostics strategy. The present review provides a general idea of the current progression in the therapeutic and prognosis purpose of magnetic nanoparticles. Further, we disclose the development in the lung cancer theranostics by functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles. The established importance of magnetic nanoparticles in the theranostics centers for lung cancer has been revealed in this paper. The challenges existing in the theranostics of lung cancer are addressed through the functioning of magnetic nanoparticles in the process.

Within the study, magnetic/polyetherimide-acrylonitrile composite nanofibers membrane with effective adsorption of nickel ions in aqueous solution were established, through a simple electrospinning method. Iron oxide nanoparticles were stirred and ultrasonically dispersed into polyetherimide-acrylonitrile solution for homogenous suspension. Afterwards, the polyetherimide-acrylonitrile solution with uniform suspension of iron nanoparticles was used in electrospinning machine to produce uniform and smooth nanofibers composite membrane. The confirmation of nanoparticles incorporation into polymeric membrane were characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD and nanoparticles aqueous stability through leach out test. The high adsorption capability of the composite membranes on nickel ions was mainly attributed to the combination of magnetic nanoparticles, polyetherimide-acrylonitrile matrix and nano-sized structure of membrane. Membrane containing magnetic nanoparticles demonstrate the maximum adsorption capabilities (102 mg/g) for nickel ions from aqueous solution. Different kinetics and isotherm models were applied to understand the adsorption behavior during adsorption process, amongst them pseudo second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model were well fitted. Additionally, EDX, FTIR and XRD results confirmed the presence of nickel ions onto membrane after adsorption process. Polyetherimide-acrylonitrile composite nanofibers membranes containing magnetic nanoparticles may use as an environmentally-friendly and non-toxic adsorbent for the removal of nickel ions in aqueous medium due to its ease of preparation, easy to use and stability in aqueous medium by retaining the nanoparticles inside the nanofibers membranes.

Abstract We aim to describe the diagnosis and surgical management of urinary tract endometriosis (UTE). We detail current diagnostic tools including advanced transvaginal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and surgical diagnostic tools such as cystourethroscopy. While discussing surgical treatment options, we emphasize the importance of an interdisciplinary team, for complex cases that involve the urinary tract. While bladder DE is more straightforward in its surgical treatment, ureteral DE requires a high level of surgical skill. Specialists should be aware of the important entity of UTE due to the serious health implications for women. When UTE exists, it is important to work within a interdisciplinary radiological and surgical team.

In a vacuum tube two identical and parallel Ag-O-Cs emitters A and B (work function 0.8eV) ceaselessly emit thermal electrons at room temperature. The thermal electrons are controlled by a static uniform magnetic field so that the number of electrons migrate from A to B exceeds the one from B to A (or vice versa). The net migration of thermal electrons from A to B quickly results in a charge distribution of A charged positively and B negatively, and a potential difference between A and B emerges, enabling a continuous output current and a stable power to an external load (e.g., a resistor). Thus, the tube cools down (slightly). The (slightly) cooled tube extracts heat from ambient air, and all the heat is converted into electric energy without other effect. We believe the experiment is in contradiction to the Kelvin statement of the second law.

Nonlinear electrodynamics with two dimensional parameters is studied. The range of electromagnetic fields when principles of causality, unitarity and the classical stability hold are obtained. A singularity of the electric field at the center of charges is absent within our model and there are corrections to the Coulomb law as $r\rightarrow\infty$. The universe inflation takes place in the background of stochastic magnetic fields. The second stage of the universe evolution is the radiation era so that the graceful exit exists. We estimated the spectral index, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the running of the spectral index that are in an approximate agreement with the PLANK and WMAP data.

The industry of the counterfeit goods is one of the largest underground business in the world and it is rapidly growing. Counterfeits can lead not only to loss of profit for honest producers but also have a negative impact on consumers who receive poor quality goods at an excessive price and may be exposed to health damages and safety issues. Perfume industry is constantly exposed to the problem of counterfeits with the fast developing parallel market of inspired perfumes being an important issue. It prompts for the identification of methods that classify the quality of this type of products. In this paper the application of proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is employed for the authentication of perfumery products for the first time. Molecular composition of several types of authentic brand fragrances for women were compared with their cheaper inspired equivalents and fake products. Our approach offers the prospect of a fast and simple method for discrimination and counterfeit detection of perfumes using 1H NMR spectroscopy.

The current study focused on reviewing the rapid growing of using magnetic water in different fields of science and measure the influence of several intensities of magnetization on the chemical and electrical properties of tap water treated by reverse osmosis. The work includes circulation of water for 24 h. in magnetic fields of intensity 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 G. The magnetization of water causes increasing some positive and negative ions in water such as (Mg, K, Na, Cl¯, Alkaline and SiO₂) and decreasing some positive and negative ions (Ca and SO₃). In the near future, the application of concepts of sustainability development in civil engineering have the to produce structures in harmony with these concepts through using of high-performance materials with less impacts on the environmental and have low cost. The main application of using magnetic water is improvement the geotechnical properties of soil through precipitation of calcite which increases the bond between soil particles and then strength of soil.

Domain walls were studied for permalloy wires with different depth trenches (500 nm wide, 30 nm thick, 7.5 µm long, the depth of the trench was 0, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15nm). Permalloy (Ni80Fe20) wires were fabricated by electron beam lithography and Ar ion milling. When the depth of trench is smaller than 12 nm, the switching field (Hs) is increasing with the deeper trench. However, the depth of trench is bigger than half depth of thickness, the Hs is decreasing with the deeper trench. We believed that Hs increased as the trench depth increased was because the magnetic diploes force increased between the magnetic poles on two sides of the trench. The domains of the wires were divided by the trenches and the domain walls were pinned on the trenches these were confirmed by magnetic force microscopy images.

In atomic GdFe$_2$ films capped by 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition metals, we show that skyrmions with diameters smaller than 12 nm can emerge. The Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI), exchange energy, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) energy were investigated based on density functional theory. Since DMI and MCA are caused by spin--orbit coupling (SOC), they are increased with 5$d$ capping layers which exhibit strong SOC strength. We discover a skyrmion phase by using atomistic spin dynamic simulations at small magnetic fields of $\sim$1 T. In addition, a ground state that a spin spiral phase is remained even at zero magnetic field for both films with 4$d$ and 5$d$ capping layers.

Modern radio spectrometers make measurement of polarized intensity as a function of Faraday depth possible. I investigate the effect of depolarization along a model line of sight. I model sightlines with two components informed by observations: a diffuse interstellar medium with a lognormal electron density distribution and a narrow, denser component simulating a spiral arm or H~{\sc ii} region, all with synchrotron-emitting gas mixed in. I then calculate the polarized intensity from 300-1800 MHz and calculate the resulting Faraday depth spectrum. The idealized synthetic observations show far more Faraday complexity than is observed in Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey observations. In a model with a very nearby H~{\sc ii} region observed at low frequencies, most of the effects of a ``depolarization wall'' are evident: the H~{\sc ii} region depolarizes background emission and less (but not zero) information from beyond the H~{\sc ii} region reaches the observer. In other cases, the effects are not so clear, as significant amounts of information reach the observer even through significant depolarization, and it is not clear that low-frequency observations sample largely different volumes of the interstellar medium than high-frequency observations. The observed Faraday depth can be randomized such that it does not always have any correlation with the true Faraday depth.

Inorganic nanoparticles based on magnetite improve the mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties of microporous cryogel polymer composites. Here we report the synthesis of microporous cryogel based on the crosslinked sodium vinyl sulfonate (Na-VS) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid sodium salt (Na-AMPS). The magnetite nanoparticles were inserted into Na-VS/Na-AMPS cryogel either during its crosslinking polymerization or by in-situ technique after its crosslinking. The morphology, particle sizes, thermal stability and magnetite contents of Na-VS/Na-AMPS cryogel and its magnetite composites were investigated. The prepared Na-VS/Na-AMPS cryogel and its magnetite composites were used as adsorbents for methylene blue (MB) cationic dye using optimum conditions. The magnetite Na-VS/Na-AMPS cryogel composite prepared by in-situ technique achieved the best adsorption MB removal capacity for 7 cycles among the other adsorbents via chemical adsorption mechanism at room temperature.

Background: Diabetes is among the most prevalent diseases worldwide, of all the affected individuals a significant proportion of the population remains undiagnosed because of a lack of specific symptoms early in this disorder and inadequate diagnostics. Diabetes and its associated sequela, i.e., comorbidity are associated with microvascular and macrovascular complications. As diabetes is characterized by an altered metabolism of key metabolites and regulatory pathways. Metabolic phenotyping can provide us with a better understanding of the unique set of regulatory perturbations that predispose to diabetes and its associated comorbidities. Methodology: The present study utilizes the analytical platform NMR spectroscopy coupled with Random Forest statistical analysis to identify the discriminatory metabolites of diabetes (DB) and diabetes-related comorbidity (DC) along with the healthy control (HC) subjects. A combined and pairwise analysis was performed, between the serum samples of HC (n=50), and DB (n=38), and DC (n=35) individuals to identify the discriminatory metabolites responsible for class separation. The perturbed metabolites were further rigorously validated using t-test, AUROC analysis to examine the statistical significance of the identified metabolites. Results: The DB and DC patients were well discriminated from HC. However, 15 metabolites were found to be significantly perturbed in DC patients compared to DB, the identified panel of metabolites are TCA cycle (succinate, citrate), methylamine metabolism (trimethylamine, methylamine, betaine), -intermediates; energy metabolites (glucose, lactate, pyruvate); and amino acids (valine, arginine, glutamate, methionine, proline and threonine). The metabolites were further used to identify the perturbed metabolic pathway and correlation of metabolites in DC patients. Conclusion: The 1H NMR metabolomics may prove a promising technique to differentiate and predict diabetes and its comorbidities on their onset or progression by determining the altered levels of the metabolites in serum.

Metal nanoparticles are extensively studied due to their unique chemical and physical properties, which differ from the properties of their respective bulk materials. Likewise, the properties of heterogeneous bimetallic structures are far more attractive than those of single-component nanoparticles. The incorporation of a second metal into the nanoparticle structure alters the surface plasmon resonance and magnetic properties of the bimetallic composite. This review focuses on the enhanced optical and magnetic properties offered by bimetallic nanoparticles and their corresponding impact on biological applications. We summarize the predominant structures of bimetallic nanoparticles, outline their synthesis methods, and highlight their use in biological applications, both diagnostic and therapeutic, which are dictated by their various optical and magnetic properties.

Pollution caused by copper is one of the key factors of environment contamination. As one of heavy metals, copper is hard to decompose in nature, the biological enrichment of which may lead to severe damage to health. Cu²⁺ detection, thus, possesses a bright application prospect both in environment protection and in human health. In this paper, a dual-functional fluorescence-magnetic composite nano-platform has been designed to sensitively detect, meanwhile capture and remove Cu²⁺ in the solution of water and ethanol (1:1, v/v). The core-shell structure nanoparticle synthesized by using Fe₃O₄ as core and SiO₂ as shell, is covalently bonded with rhodamine derivatives on the silica layer to construct the nano-platform. The emission is increased upon the addition of Cu²⁺, showing fluorescence turn on effect for the detection, and the limit of detection which was as low as 1.68 nM. Meanwhile, Cu²⁺ ions are captured by the coordination with rhodamine derivatives, and can be removable with the help of magnetic field.

The synthesis of new collagen, chitosan and chitosan-collagen coated magnetic nanoparticles have been done. Two types of cross-linkers for polymer shell stabilization were used: glutaraldehyde (Gla) as a standard cross-linker and new one – squaric acid (SqA). Structure and morphology of prepared nanoparticles were characterized by ATR-FT IR, XRD and TEM analysis. The immobilization of lipase from Candida rugosa was performed on the nanoparticles surface. The amount of immobilized enzyme was quantified by the Bradford method. All of lipase-biopolymers coated nanoparticles were characterized with good activity recovery. A little hyperactivation of lipase immobilized on nanoparticles with SqA was observed. All of prepared lipase-immobilized nanoparticles were characterized with very good reusability.

The general-purpose Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN studies a production of new particles in the proton-proton collisions at the LHC center of mass energy 13.6 TeV. The detector includes the magnet based on the 6 m diameter superconducting solenoid coil operating with the current of 18.164 kA. This current creates a central magnetic flux density of 3.8 T that allows to measure momenta of the produced in collisions charged particles with tracking and muon subdetectors at a high precision. The CMS magnet contains a 10,000 ton flux-return yoke made of construction steel that bends muons in steel blocks magnetized with the solenoid returned magnetic flux. To reconstruct the muon trajectories, and thus, to measure the muon momenta, the drift tube and cathode strip chambers are located between the layers of the steel blocks and serve for this purpose. To describe the distribution of the magnetic flux in the magnet yoke layers, a three-dimensional computer model of the CMS magnet is used. To prove the calculations, the special measurements are performed with the flux loops wound in 22 cross-sections of the flux-return yoke blocks. The measured voltages induced in the flux loops during the CMS magnet ramp ups and downs, as well as during the superconducting coil fast discharges with the 190 s time constant, are integrated over time to obtain the initial magnetic flux densities in the flux loop cross-sections. The measurements obtained during the seven standard ramp downs of the magnet have been analyzed in 2018. From that time three fast discharges are occurred during the standard ramp downs of the magnet. This allows to single out the contributions of the eddy currents, induced in steel, to the flux loop voltages registered during the fast discharges of the coil. Accounting for these contributions to the flux loop measurements during manually triggered fast discharges in 2006 allows to perform the validation of the CMS magnet computer model with a better precision. The technique of the flux loop measurements, and the obtained results are presented and discussed.

Magnetic nanoparticles are met across many biological species ranging from magnetosensitive bacteria, fishes, bees, bats, rats, birds, to humans. They can be both of biogenetic origin and due to environmental contamination, being either in paramagnetic or ferromagnetic state. The energy of such naturally occurring single-domain magnetic nanoparticles can reach up to 10-20 room k_BT in the magnetic field of the Earth, which naturally led to supposition that they can serve as sensory elements in various animals. This work explores within a stochastic modeling framework a fascinating hypothesis of magnetosensitive ion channels with magnetic nanoparticles serving as sensory elements, especially, how realistic it is given a highly dissipative viscoelastic interior of living cells and typical sizes of nanoparticles possibly involved.

Electromagnetic actuation can support many fields of technology, such as robotics or biomedical applications. In this context, fully understanding the system behavior and proposing a low-cost package for feedback control is challenging. Modeling the electromagnetic force is particularly tricky because it is a nonlinear function of the actuated object’s position and coil’s current. Measuring in real time the position of the actuated object with the precision required for accurate motion control is also nontrivial. In this study, we propose a novel, cost-effective electromagnetic set-up to achieve position control via visual feedback. We actuate vertically and under different experimental conditions a 10 mm diameter steel ball hanging on a low-stiffness spring, demonstrating good tracking performance (the position error remains within ±0.5 mm with a negligible phase delay in the best scenarios). The experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed set-up, which is characterized by minimum complexity and realized with off-the-shelf and cost-effective components. For these reasons, such a contribution helps to understand and apply electromagnetic actuation even further.

The paper presents an analysis of the method of recording the magnetic component of the Earth’s natural pulse electromagnetic field in an urban environment. This method of recording has already proved itself to be a method that allocates the stressed sections of rock mass at mining and, therefore, authors suppose its effectiveness for allocating active tectonic disturbances and forecasting accidents at underground utilities, what will help reduce the potential environmental hazard of these objects.

The present paper reports exact results for the muon self-energy and anomalous g-factor. A unique to the muon cut-off terms that remove the radial singularity in the system and regularize the corresponding electrodynamics are presented. Equations of motion and a transcendental equation satisfied by the muon anomalous g-factor are derived, with solution a_m=0.0011659201231(18). The obtained value matches the latest experimental one found in the literature to about 0.46 ppb ruling out a possible tension between theory and experiment.

This study presents a novel predictive model to address the churn problem in the motor insurance sector using a dual-phase framework. The first phase employs a cave-degree perturbation technique for effective feature selection, while the second phase applies the Magnetic Force Perturbation Technique (MFPT) to optimize the search process and avoid local optima traps. Two metaheuristics are proposed: the Adaptive Random Forest-Assisted Large Neighborhood Feature Optimizer (ARALFO) and the Adaptive Random Forest Particle Swarm Optimizer (ARFPSO) to enhance churn prediction accuracy. The model was evaluated on two real-world motor insurance datasets, achieving a 95% accuracy rate and outperforming state-of-the-art algorithms. An ablation study confirmed the significant impact of the cave-degree and MFPT techniques in boosting predictive performance.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can be functionalized with antibodies to give them an affinity for a biomarker of interest. Functionalized MNPs (fMNPs) cluster in the presence of a multivalent target, causing a change in their magnetization. Target concentration can be proportional to the third harmonic phase of the fMNP magnetization signal. fMNP clustering can also be induced with salt. Generally, salt can alter the stability of charge stabilized fMNPs causing a change in magnetization that is not proportional to the target concentration. We have developed a model system consisting of biotinylated MNPs (biotin-MNPs) that target streptavidin to study the effects of salt concentration on fMNP-based biosensing in simulated in vivo conditions. We have found that biotin-MNP streptavidin targeting was independent of salt concentration for 0.005x to 1.00x phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solutions. Additionally, we show that our biosensor’s measurable concentration range (dynamic range) can be tuned with biotin density. Our results can be leveraged to design an in vivo nanoparticle (NP)-based biosensor with enhanced efficacy in the event of varying salt concentrations.

A Co–doped porous carbon was successfully fabricated by a facile carbonizing procedure using coal hydrogasification semi-coke (SC) as the carbon and cobalt nitrate as the magnetic precursors, respectively. The microwave absorption (MA) performances were regulated by adjusting the mass ratio of the precursors. The dielectric loss from the carbon framework, the magnetic loss from nano–sized Co particles coupled with multiple scattering from the residual pores synergistically contribute to the favorable MA capabilities. When the initial mass ratio of cobalt nitrate and SC was 1:1, the Co/C composite showed the lowest reflection loss of -33.45 dB at the thickness of 4.0 mm. The effective absorbing bandwidth (EAB) could achieve 3.5 GHz at 2 mm in thickness. This work not only exploits a new avenue for the structural design and facile fabrication of dielectric and magnetic loss combinations, but also opens up another way for the high value–added utilization of SC.

This study explores the application of AncorLam HR (Höganäs, Sweden), a soft magnetic composite (SMC) material, in the stator core of an axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) drive motor. Building on previous research that provided mechanical and thermal properties of AncorLam HR, the study focuses on analyzing how the manufacturing process affects the motor core's shape. A bulk prototype was created based on Case 3, which demonstrated the least deviation in density and internal stress. The prototypes were produced under the specified conditions of SPM 7 and 90°C, resulting in an average density and simulation density error of 0.54%, which confirms the effectiveness of the process. To further verify the reliability, the microstructure of the AncorLam HR powder and the resulting bulk prototype was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements at 5mm, 20mm, and 25mm on Sample 2, which had the highest density, confirmed the consistency between simulation and prototype density trends. Additionally, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis revealed a random orientation of the powder, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed consistent iron (Fe) peaks at 44.9°, 65.0°, and 82.3° in both the powder and bulk prototypes, indicating no significant change in the internal phase structure. Further analysis using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) identified that the phosphorus (P) content was eliminated during the molding process, which led to the destruction of the insulating layer, a critical performance factor for SMC materials. In AFPM motor simulations, the average torque was measured at 34.5 mN·m, with core loss increasing as frequency increased. The observation of iron loss spikes during motor startup indicates the need for further research to optimize material selection. This study confirms the viability of using AncorLam HR in electric vehicle motor cores and provides essential data for improving the performance of AFPM motors. Future research should prioritize optimizing SMC materials to enhance the performance and efficiency of AFPM motor applications.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an important animal model for a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases. However, obtaining the cellular resolution that is essential for studying the zebrafish brain remains challenging as it requires high-spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). In the current study, we present the first MRI results of the zebrafish brain at the state-of-the-art magnetic field strength of 28.2 T. The performance of MRI at 28.2 T was compared to 17.6 T. A 20% improvement in SNR was observed at 28.2 T as compared to 17.6 T. Excellent contrast, resolution, and SNR allowed the identification of several brain structures. The normative T1 and T2 relaxation values were established over different zebrafish brain structures at 28.2 T. To zoom into the white matter structures, we applied diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and obtained axial, radial, and mean diffusivity, as well as fractional anisotropy at a very high spatial resolution. Visualization of white matter structures was achieved by short-track track-density imaging by applying the constrained spherical deconvolution method (stTDI CSD). For the first time, an algorithm for stTDI with multi-shell multi-tissue (msmt) CSD was tested on zebrafish brain data. A significant reduction of false-positive tracks from grey matter signals was observed compared to stTDI with single-shell single-tissue (ssst) CSD. This allowed the non-invasive identification of white matter structures at high resolution and contrast. Our results show that ultra-high field DTI and tractography provide reproducible and quantitative maps of fibre organization from tiny zebrafish brains, which can be implemented in the future for a mechanistic understanding of disease-related microstructural changes in zebrafish models of various brain diseases.

Potential permanent magnet (Fe0.7Co0.3)2B has large saturation magnetization and high Curie temperature but a moderate magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and displays relatively low coercivity. One way to improve coercivity is to combine the contribution from magnetocrystalline- and magnetic shape anisotropy by preparing (Fe0.7Co0.3)2B nanowires. We study the effect of size, morphology, and surface defect on the hard magnetic properties of nanowires using micromagnetic simulation. The hard magnetic properties of (Fe0.7Co0.3)2B nanowire bonded magnet have been estimated, including the role of inter-wire magnetostatic interaction. By considering the existence of local reduction of MCA energy up to 30% on the surface layer of nanowires, the anisotropic bonded magnet with 65% vol. of (Fe0.7Co0.3)2B nanowires displays typical magnetic properties of remanence Br=8.4 kG, coercivity Hci=9.9 kOe, and maximum energy product (BH)m=17.8 MGOe. Developing effective technology for synthesizing nanowires and fabricating corresponding bonded magnets is promising for manufacturing practical magnets based on magnetic phase with relatively low or moderate MCA, such as (Fe0.7Co0.3)2B.

Aquaculture contributes to the sustainable development of food security, marine resource conservation, and economy. Shifting aquaculture feed from fish meal and oil to terrestrial plant-derivatives may result in cost savings. However, many carnivorous fish cannot be sustained on plant-derived materials, necessitating the need for the identification of important factors for farmed fish growth and to investigate whether components derived from terrestrial plants can be used in feed. Herein, we focused on the carnivorous fish leopard coral grouper (P. leopardus) to identify the essential growth factors and clarify their intake timing from feeds. Furthermore, we evaluated the functionality of starch, which are easily produced by terrestrial plants. Results reveal that carbohydrates, which are not considered essential for carnivorous fish, can be introduced as a major part of artificial diet. The development of artificial feed using starch offers the possibility of increasing the growth of carnivorous fish in aquaculture.

Background and Objectives To compare navigator-gated three-dimensional T1-weighted gradient-echo sequences (NG-3D T1W-GRE) with standard breath-hold T1W-GRE (BH T1W-GRE) for the detection of HCC nodules in patients with chronic viral hepatitis which undergo at magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using gadoxetic acid. Methods and materials We evaluated 58 patients with hepatic nodules at least 1 cm in diameter detected by ultrasound who underwent liver MRI including NG-3D T1W-GRE sequences and breath hold T1-weighted gradient-echo sequences with different flip angles(FA) at 10-25-40° after contrast administration of gadoxetic acid at magnetic scanner operating at1.5 Tesla. Image quality and relative hepatic and nodular enhancement were evaluated by three blinded reviewers. Results In these patients, image quality of NG-3D T1W-GRE was assessed significantly better than quality of BHT1W- GRE (P < 0.005) and relative enhancement was significantly higher than that of BH- T1W-GRE ( P

Laser-plasma interactions of ultra-short laser pulses with solid targets can generate highly intense pulses of protons and ions with energies of several MeV. The spectra of these particles are spread over a wide range following a Maxwellian distribution. We report on the design and testing of a magnetic chicane for the selection of protons within a limited energy window. It consists in two successive, anti-parallel dipole fields generated by cost-effective, permanent C-magnets with customized configuration and longitudinal positions. The chicane has been implemented into the target vessel of a petawatt laser facility under constraints on the direction of the incoming laser beam and guidance of the outgoing particles through a vacuum port. The separation of protons and carbon ions within distinct energy intervals has been demonstrated and compared to a ray tracing code.

The complex dynamics of the neocortex, the outermost layer of the brain, have been a subject of intense research in neuroscience. Recent studies have suggested that magnetic fields generated by neuronal activity may play a significant role in neocortical dynamics. This paper presents a simplified mathematical model that explores the hypothesized interactions between magnetic dynamos, nondissipative systems, Hamiltonian equations, and the Lorenz force in the context of neocortical dynamics. The proposed model is based on a set of coupled Hamiltonian equations inspired by the Lorenz system, a well-known chaotic dynamical system. The generalized coordinates in the model represent the magnetic field components, while the generalized momenta are related to the electric field components or other relevant quantities. The Hamiltonian equations describe the conservative dynamics of the system, and the coupling terms in the equations are interpreted as representing the interactions between the magnetic and electric field components, analogous to the Lorenz force in electromagnetism. The model is implemented using Python, and the Hamiltonian equations are numerically solved using the odeint function from the scipy.integrate module. The resulting dynamics of the magnetic field components are visualized using matplotlib. While the model is highly simplified and does not capture the full complexity of neocortical dynamics, it serves as a starting point for investigating the potential role of magnetic dynamos and Lorenz force interactions in the brain. The paper discusses the limitations of the current model and highlights the need for further refinements, such as incorporating more realistic biological constraints, considering energy dissipation and compensation mechanisms, and validating the model against experimental data. Future work should focus on developing a more comprehensive and biologically plausible model that integrates the latest findings from neuroscience, physics, and computational modeling. By presenting this simplified Hamiltonian model, the paper aims to stimulate further research and discussion on the potential significance of magnetic dynamos and Lorenz force interactions in neocortical dynamics. The model provides a framework for exploring these hypothesized mechanisms and may guide future experimental and theoretical investigations in this emerging field of neuroscience

Risk stratification for malignant ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death is a daunting task for physicians in daily practice. Multiparametric mapping sequences obtained via cardio-vascular magnetic resonance imaging can improve the risk for malignant ventricular arrhythmias by unveiling the presence of pathophysiological pro-arrhythmogenic processes. However, their employment in clinical practice is still restricted. The present review explores the current evidence supporting the association between mapping abnormalities and the risk of ventricular arrhyth-mias in several cardiovascular diseases. The key message is that further clinical studies are needed to test the additional value of mapping techniques beyond conventional cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging for selecting patients eligible for an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

Magnetic pulse welding (MPW) employs high pulsed magnetic field to accelerate parts against each other thus forming an impact joining. Single-turn tool coils and field-shapers (FS) used in MPW operate under the most demanding conditions: a magnetic field of 40-50 T with a period of tens of microseconds. For conventional copper and bronze coils intense thermo-mechanical stresses lead to rapid degradation of the working bore. This work is aimed to improve the efficiency of field-shapers and focused on development of 2- and 4-slit FS with nanocomposite Cu 18Nb wire brazed as FS inner current-carrying layer. The measured ratio of magnetic field to discharge current was 56.3 and 50.6 T/MA for 2- and 4-slit FS respectively. FEM calculations of magnetic field generation showed its 6-9% and 3% variation for 2- and 4-slit FS respectively. The results of copper tube compression have shown an ovality of 27% and 7% for 2- and 4-slit FS respectively. The measured deviation of weld joining length was 11% and 1.4% in 2- and 4-slit FS respectively. Compared to the previous experiments on the whole steel inductor, the novel FS showed significantly better results in terms of efficiency and homogeneity of the magnetic field.

The spread of high-performance personal computers, frequently equipped with powerful Graphic Processing Units (GPU), raised the interest on a set of techniques able to extract models of electromagnetic phenomena (and devices) directly from available examples of the desired behavior. Such approaches are collectively referred to as Machine Learning (ML). A typical representative ML approach is the so called “Neural Network” (NN). Using such data-driven models allows evaluating the output in a much shorter time when a theoretical model is available, or allows predicting the behavior of the systems and devices when no theoretical model is available. With reference to a simple yet representative benchmark electromagnetic problem, some of the possibilities and the pitfalls of the use of NN for the interpretation of measurements (inverse problem) or to obtain the required measurements (optimal design problem) are discussed. The investigated aspects include the choice of the NN model; the generation of the dataset(s); the selection of hyperparameters (hidden layers, training paradigm). Finally, the capabilities in the handling of ill-posed problems are critically revised.

Neuropathic pain is caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system and is one of the most incapacitating pain types, representing a significant non met medical need. Due to the increase in research in the field and since innovative therapeutic strategies are required, namely in intractable neuropathic pain, neurostimulation has been used. Within this approaches, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) that uses a transient magnetic field to produce electrical currents over the cortex emerges in the literature. Since this is an area in expansion and due to the putative role of TMS, we performed a bibliometric analysis in Scopus with the primary objective of identify the scientific production related to the use of TMS to manage neuropathic pain. The research had no restrictions and the analysis focused on the characteristics of the literature retrieved, scientific collaboration and main research topics from inception to July 6, 2023. A total of 474 articles were collected. A biggest co-occurrence between the terms “neuropathic pain” and “transcranial magnetic stimulation” was obtained. The journal “Clinical Neurophysiology” leads the Top 5 most productive sources. The United States is the most productive country with 50% of the documents being “review articles” followed by France with 56% of the documents being “original articles”. Lefaucheur, JP and Saitoh, Y are the two most influents authors. The most frequent type of documents was “original article”. This study allows to perform a general overview in the field of TMS application for neuropathic pain and is useful to establish future directions of research in this field.

In recent years, magnetic fields have emerged as a non-thermophysical treatment with a signifi-cant impact on microbial fermentation processes. Brassica trispora is a microorganism known for its indus-trial-scale production of lycopene and high yield of single cells. This study aimed to in-vestigate the impact of low frequency magnetic fields on lycopene synthesis by Brassica trispora and elucidate the underlying mechanism for enhancing lycopene yield. The results indicated that both the intensity and duration of the magnetic field treatment influenced the cell. Exposing the cell to a 0.5 mT magnetic field for 48 hours on the second day of fermentation resulted in a lyco-pene yield of 1473.16 mg/L, representing a re-markable increase of 216.1% compared to the con-trol group. Transcriptome analysis revealed that al-ternating magnetic field significantly up-regulated genes related to ROS and cell membrane structure, leading to a substantial increase in lycopene production. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the magnetic field treatment resulted in rough, loose, wrinkled surface morphology of the mycelium, along with a few mi-cropores, thereby altering the cell membrane permeability to some extent. Moreover, there was a significant increase in intracellular ROS content, cell membrane permeability, key enzyme activi-ty involved in lycopene metabolism, and ROS-related enzyme activity. In conclusion, the alter-nating fre-quency magnetic field can activate a self-protective mechanism that enhances lyco-pene synthesis by modulating intracellular ROS content and cell membrane structure. These find-ings not only deepen our understanding of the impact of magnetic fields on microbial growth and metabolism but also provide valuable insights for developing innovative approaches to en-hance carotenoid fermentation.

Epitaxial lithium ferrite (LiFe5O8) films with different thicknesses have been successfully fabricated on SrTiO3 (001) substrates by magnetron sputtering deposition technique. The microstructural and magnetic properties are characterized by advanced transmission electron microscope and magnetic measurement device. It was found that the formation of structural defects can be influenced by the thickness of the film. Apart from the misfit dislocations, the orientation domains form in thinner film and twin boundaries appear in thicker film, respectively, contributing to the misfit strain relaxation in the heterosystem. The magnetic measurement shows that the thinner films have enhanced magnetization and a relatively lower coercive field compared with the thicker films containing the antiferromagnetic twin boundaries. Our results provide a way for tuning the microstructure and magnetic properties of lithium ferrite films by changing the film thickness.

Multiple entities use unmanned underwater drones for various functions, but how can they navigate underwater at such depths without a pilot? It is essential to understand how different unmanned underwater drones, such as remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, function with underwater sensing technology. As each unmanned underwater drone has its function, the combination or chief use of the sensors is equally essential to recognize. Different underwater drone designs can be more cost-effective when a human is not on board as it can lead to a smaller, streamlined design in which oxygen and pressure control need not be a factor. Without considering oxygen limitations, these underwater drones can remain submerged for extended periods. These underwater vehicles operate autonomously or in conditions that may leave the individuals controlling the trajectory relying upon these sensors. It is also necessary to review how these sensors work, how they are implemented, and how they can help the public. This review was performed to address these research questions and provide an overview of sensors employed by unmanned underwater vehicles.

Rectal cancer presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, with neoadjuvant therapy playing a pivotal role in improving resectability and patient outcomes. MRI serves as a critical tool in assessing treatment response. However, differentiating viable tumor tissue from therapy-induced changes on MRI remains a complex task. In this comprehensive review, we explore treatment options for rectal cancer based on resectability status, focusing on the role of MRI in guiding therapeutic decisions. We delve into the nuances of MRI-based evaluation of treatment response following neoadjuvant therapy, with particular attention to emerging techniques like radiomics. Drawing from current literature and insights, we provide essential recommendations for post-neoadjuvant therapy management in rectal cancer, all within the context of MRI-based findings.

Present study focuses on the synthesis and characterisation of a lightweight ceramic material with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties, achieved using mullite containing micrometer-sized hollow spheres (cenospheres) and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. The research explores compositions with varying CoFe2O4 content, ranging from 0 up to 20 wt.%. Сonventional sintering in an air atmosphere is carried out at a temperature between 1100-1300 °C. The addition of ferrite nanoparticles was found to enhance the sintering process of cenospheres, resulting in improved material density and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the study reveals a direct correlation between the concentration of ferrite nanoparticles and the electromagnetic properties of the. By increasing the concentration of ferrite nanoparticles, the electromagnetic shielding effect of the material (saturation magnetization (Ms) and remanent magnetization (Mr)) was observed to strengthen. These findings provide valuable insights into the design and development of lightweight ceramic materials with enhanced electromagnetic shielding capabilities. The synthesized ceramic material holds promise for various applications that require effective electromagnetic shielding, such as in electronics, telecommunications, and aerospace industries.

Measuring magnetic fields in the inner corona, the interface between the solar chromosphere and outer corona, is of paramount importance if we aim at understanding the energetic transformations taking place there and which is at the origin of processes that lead to coronal heating, solar wind acceleration, and of most of the phenomena relevant to space weather. However, these measurements are more difficult than mere imaging because polarimetry requires differential photometry. The Coronal Magnetograph mission (CMAG) has been designed to map the vector magnetic field, line-of-sight velocities, and plane-of-the-sky velocities of the inner corona with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions from space. This will be achieved through full vector spectropolarimetric observations using a coronal magnetograph as the sole instrument on board a spacecraft, combined with an external occulter installed on another spacecraft. The two spacecraft will maintain a formation flight distance of 430 meters for coronagraphic observations, which requires a 2 m occulter disk radius. The mission will be preferentially located at the Lagrangian L5 point, offering a significant advantage for solar physics and space weather research. Existing ground-based instruments face limitations such as atmospheric turbulence, solar scattered light, and long integration times when performing coronal magnetic field measurements. CMAG overcomes these limitations by performing spectropolarimetric measurements from space with an external occulter and high-image stability maintained over time. It achieves the necessary sensitivity and offers a spatial resolution of 2.5 arcseconds and a temporal resolution of approximately one minute, in its nominal mode, covering the range from 1.02 solar radii to 2.5 radii. CMAG relies on proven European technologies and can be adapted to enhance any other solar mission, offering potential significant advancements in coronal physics and space weather modeling and monitoring.

The general-purpose Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN includes the hadronic calorimeter to register the energies of the charged and neutral hadrons produced in the proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a center of mass energy 13.6 TeV. The calorimeter is located inside the superconducting solenoid of 6 m in diameter and 12.5 m in length creating the central magnetic flux density of 3.8 T. For operating optimally in the high pileup and high radiation environment of the High Luminosity LHC, the existing CMS endcap calorimeters will be replaced with a new high granularity calorimeter (HGCal) comprising of an electromagnetic and a hadronic section in each of the two endcaps. The hadronic section of the HGCAL will include 44 stainless steel absorber plates with a relative permeability value well below 1.05. The volume occupied by 22 plates in each endcap is about 21 m3. The calculation of the axial electromagnetic forces on the absorber plates is a crucial element in designing the mechanical construction of the device. With a three-dimensional computer model of the CMS magnet, the axial forces on each absorber plate are calculated and the dependence of forces on the central magnetic flux density value is presented. The method of calculation and the obtained results are discussed.

The Atlantic puffin is a medium-sized seabird with black and white plumage and orange feet. It is distributed mainly along the northern Atlantic Ocean and due, among other reasons, to human activities, it is in a threatened situation and classified as a vulnerable species according to the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In this study, we used a total of 20 carcasses of juvenile Atlantic puffins to perform anatomical cross sections and magnetic resonance images. Thus, an adequate description of the head was made, providing valuable information that could be helpful as a diagnostic tool for veterinary clinicians, who increasingly treat these birds in zoos, rehabilitation centers and even in the wild.

New complexes of manganese(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate [Mn(hfac)2] with 2-(1-R-3-pyrazol-4-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-imidazoline-3-oxide-1-oxyl (R = CHF2, CH2CH2F, CH2CHF2 or CH2CF3) were synthesised and characterised structurally and magnetically. All complexes were prepared under similar conditions. Nonetheless, their crystal structures were considerably different. Depending on the structure of fluorinated alkyl substituent R, the complexation reaction led to complexes of three types: chain-polymeric complexes with the head-to-head or head-to-tail motif and complexes of molecular structure. All complexes show strong antiferromagnetic behaviour in a high-temperature region (150−300 K) and weak ferro- or antiferromagnetic exchange interactions at low temperatures. The stronger antiferromagnetic exchange, –101.7 ± 1.5 or –136 ± 10 cm–1, –82.3 ± 1.3 cm–1 and –87.4 ± 1.3 cm–1, was attributed to the magnetic interaction in three- or two-spin clusters: {&gt;N∸O–Mn2+–O∸N&lt;} or {&gt;N∸O–Mn2+}, respectively. The weaker antiferromagnetic interaction, –0.005, between three-spin clusters or ferromagnetic interactions, 0.18–0.81 cm–1, between two-spin clusters are realised through the pyrazole ring or intermolecular contacts.

Simple summary: The noninvasive differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) remains challenging. In recent years, the number of studies on the application of radiomics in liver cancer has grown dramatically. However, there have been very few studies on the differentiation of HCC from ICC based on multisequence magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiomics. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a radiomic model based on preoperative fat suppression T2-weighted imaging (FS-T2WI) and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI features in the arterial phase (A) and portal venous phase (P) for the differentiation of HCC from ICC. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiomics in differentiating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). The clinical and MRI data of 129 pathologically confirmed HCC cases and 48 ICC cases from April 2016 to December 2021 at the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College were retrospectively analyzed. Included cases were randomly divided at a ratio of 7:3 into a training group of 124 cases (90 HCC cases and 34 ICC cases) and a validation group of 53 cases (39 HCC cases and 14 ICC cases). Radiomic features were extracted from axial fat-suppression T2-weighted imaging (FS-T2WI) and axial arterial-phase (A) and portal-venous-phase (P) dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI sequences, and the corresponding datasets were generated. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was used to select the best radiomic features. Logistic regression was used to establish a radiomic model for each sequence (FS-T2WI, A, and P models) and a joint model (M model) integrating the radiomic features of all the sequences. The performance of each model was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The AUC of the FS-T2WI, A, P, and M models for distinguishing HCC from ICC was 0.693, 0.863, 0.818, and 0.914 in the training group and 0.690, 0.784, 0.727, and 0.802 in the validation group, respectively. The results of this study suggest that MRI-based radiomics may help noninvasively differentiate HCC from ICC. The model integrating the radiomic features of multiple sequences showed further improvement in performance.

The suspension cross-linking technique has been utilized to create the magnetic chitosan nanoparticles, which were then applied to the magnetic carrier method at 80°C. First the FeCl2 and FeCl3 solution co-precipitated and synthesized Fe3O4 for utilization in the formation of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles, it has been characterized by utilizing DLS (Dynamic light scattering), XRD (X-ray diffraction spectrometer), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), which identified structure, size, FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope) and HR-TEM (High-resolution transmission electron microscopy) which identified structure and particle size whereas magnetic behavior of chitosan nanoparticles was determined by VSM (Vibrating sample magnetometer). According to the results collected, the magnetic chitosan nanoparticles have been spherical in form and size ranging from around 250 to 400 nm.

In this study, we investigate the magnetization behavior of coaxial nanowires fabricated through the sol-gel electrospinning method. Our analysis uncovers a significant reduction in coercivity for CoFe2O4 nanowires when BaTiO3 is used as the shell material, effectively transforming them from hard to soft magnetic. This intriguing behavior is attributed to the magnetization reversal effect at the interface between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions, and it is also observed in NiFe2O4 and Fe2O3 nanowires. Surprisingly, introducing a GdBa2Cu3O7 shell induces a similar effect. Additionally, we employ magnetic impedance measurements on the coaxial nanowires, unveiling their potential for magnetic field sensing applications.

Resonant light scattering by mesoscale dielectric spheres has received enormous attention and found many interesting applications. The recently emerged field of Mesotronics provides novel opportunities for wavelength-scaled optics and new fundamental aspects are still being uncovered. It has recently been demonstrated that high-order Mie resonances can be excited in homogeneous low-dissipation mesoscale dielectric spheres, leading to the generation of intense magnetic fields. This Letter describes a simple and effective way to drastically enhance the superresonance effect. Proof-of-principle results for the first time show that yet one more novel phenomenon of increasing the intensity of the magnetic field without changing the resonant Mie size parameter of the sphere by introducing an air cavity. In such a dielectric cenosphere (from two Greek words “kenos” - hollow and “sphaira” - sphere), by correct choosing of the air cavity size, it is possible to increase the intensity of the electromagnetic fields at the poles of the sphere by an order of magnitude due to increasing of amplitude of resonant partial wave coefficient.

These years, disease-causing and disabling diseases have caused great concern. Neurological, musculoskeletal disorders are diverse and affect people of a wide range of ages. And the lack of comprehensive diagnostic methods places a huge burden on healthcare systems and social economies. In this paper, the current status of clinical research on neuromuscular diseases is introduced, and the advantages of magnetic field measurement compared with clinical diagnostic methods are illustrated. The paper makes a comprehensive description about the related technology of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), magnetic field detection noise suppression scheme, the development trend of sensor detection system, and the application and model establishment of neuromuscular magnetic field. The current researches and developments in the worldwide are compared simultaneously in this paper and finally the conclusions and outlook are put forward. This review will be very interesting and helpful to the scientific community.

Recent dissection studies resulted in the introduction of the term “chiasma antebrachii”, which represents an intersection of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendons for digit 2 and 3 in the distal third of the forearm. This retrospective investigation aimed to provide an MRI-based morphologic analysis of the chiasma antebrachii. In 89 patients (41 women, 39.3±21.3 years), MRI examinations of the forearm (2010–2021) were reviewed by two radiologists, who evaluated all studies for the presence and length of the chiasma as well as its distance from the distal radioulnar and elbow joint. The chiasma antebrachii was identified in the distal third of the forearm in 88 patients (98.9%), while one intersection was located more proximally in the middle part. The chiasma had a median length of 28 mm (interquartile range: 24–35 mm). Its distances to the distal radioulnar and elbow joint were 16 mm (8–25 mm) and 215 mm (187–227 mm), respectively. T1-weighted post-contrast sequences were found to be superior to T2- or proton density-weighted sequences in 71 cases (79.8%). Concluding, the chiasma antebrachii is part of the standard FDS anatomy. Knowledge of its morphology is important, e.g. in targeted injections of therapeutics or reconstructive surgery.

Hydrotalcites (HTlc) represents a class of nanostructured layered materials that may be employed in a variety of applications, from green to bio technologies. In this paper, we report an investigation on HTlc made of Mg and Fe, recently employed to improve the growth in vitro of osteoblasts within a keratin sponge. We have carried out an analysis of powder materials and of HTlc dispersed in keratin and spin-coated on a Si/SiO2 substrate at different temperatures. A DC magnetic study of the powders has been carried out with a Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System, equipped with a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. The data gathered prove that these HTlc are fully paramagnetic, and keratin shows a very small magnetic response. Optical and Atomic Force Microscopy analyses of the thin films provide a detailed picture of clusters randomly dispersed in the films with various dimensions. The magnetic properties of these films have been characterized using the Nano Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (NanoMOKE) down to 7.5K. The data collected show that the local magnetic properties can be mapped with a micrometric resolution distinguishing HTlc regions from keratin ones. This approach opens new perspectives in the characterization of these composite materials.

The Gulong shale oil reservoir is formed in freshwater to slightly saline lacustrine basins, mainly consisting of pure shale geological structure, which is quite different from other shale reservoirs around the world. Currently, the development of Gulong shale oil mainly relies on hydraulic fracturing, while the subsequent shut-in period for imbibition has been proven to be an effective method for enhancing shale oil recovery. To clarify the characteristics of fluid occurrence space and the variation of fluid occurrence during saltwater imbibition in Gulong shale, this paper carried out porosity and permeability tests on Gulong shale cores, and analyzed the fluid occurrence space characteristics and imbibition oil recovery based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In the porosity and permeability tests, the porosity measured by saturation method was calibrated using NMR T2 spectra. Combined with the identification of fractures in shale cores using micro-CT and the analysis of porosity and permeability parameters, it was found that the permeability of shale cores was related to the development of fractures in shale cores. Through the testing and analysis of NMR T1-T2 two-dimensional spectra of the shale cores before and after saturation with oil, it was found that the shale mainly contains heavy oil, light oil, and clay-bound water, and they were distributed in different positions in the T1-T2 spectrum. Finally, the T1-T2 two-dimensional spectra of the shale core at different imbibition stages were analyzed, and it was found that the saltwater mainly entered the minuscule inorganic pores of clay minerals during the imbibition process, and squeezed the larger-sized inorganic pores containing light oil through the hydration expansion effect, thus expelling the light oil from the shale core and achieving the purpose of enhanced oil recovery.

Spacetime torsion is known to be highly suppressed at the end of inflation, called preheating. Of course this fact does not avoid that metric could affect the cosmic dynamos at preheating phase as was showed by Bassett et al, in the general relativity (GR) case. In this paper, is to show that a torsionful magnetogenesis in QED effective lagrangean, drives either a torsion damping or an amplification mechanism or dynamo effect, depending upon torsion chirality. The present extension of Basset et al theory yields a new magnetic field expression $B\sim{a^{(1\pm{\beta})}}$, obtained from dynamo equation in QED. Here a cosmic factor ${\beta}=g_{T}{\eta}k$ is present. In a second example we find Higgs inlationary fields in Einstein-Cartan gravity thick domain walls (DWs). Recently a moodified Einstein-Cartan gravity was given by M Shaposhnikov et al [PRL (2020)] to obtain higgs like inflatons as a portal to dark energy.

The paper concerns the distribution of apparent magnetic susceptibility in soil profiles located in the areas of topsoil magnetic susceptibility anomalies in Krakow. The type of land use, possible sources of magnetic carriers, and the type of soil were taken into account. Additionally, at each soil profile, a comparison between soil magnetic susceptibility and the results of geochemical analyzes of soil samples was made. The study shows very characteristic changes in magnetic susceptibility with depth, reflecting the interdependencies between natural and anthropogenic factors. A visible magnetic susceptibility maximum at the depth of 10-30 cm is observed at each soil profile. The maximum is associated mainly with the deposition of atmospheric dust and its vertical range depends on the level of anthropopression and natural conditions of soils. At the depth above 40 cm in the eastern part of Krakow, a correlation between the magnetic susceptibility and the soil type (chernozems de-veloped on loess) was found. All indicates that the thicknesses of contaminated upper horizons are not accidental and they depend on human interactions with the environment and the type of soil. An attempt at template establishment with the sources of magnetic particle carriers for different places in the city was made. As the result, in high urbanized sites, the extreme values of magnet-ic susceptibility rapidly change in short vertical distances can identify the richness of anthropo-genic layers with various types of anthropogenic ferrous material and/or additionally Fe-carrying objects buried in soils. In industrialized sites, anthropogenic input plays the most important role in the creation of soil magnetic characteristics. What is more, industrial pollution hides the natural magnetic properties of chernozems. In opposite, the studies at the sites under low anthropopression (mainly located in forests) allow for better insight into magnetic proper-ties arising during pedogenic processes, indirectly giving information about soil conditions. In the forest areas, the lowest values of soil magnetic susceptibility were measured. Additionally, the influence of pedogenic and lithogenic factors on forest soils is manifested in the results. Among the sites concerned, particular attention should be paid to the vicinity of the steel plant because of the agricultural land in the surroundings.

The development and improvement of methods for the synthesis of environmentally friendly catalysts based on base metals is currently an urgent and promising task of modern catalysis. Catalysts based on nanoscale magnetite and maghemite have fast adsorption-desorption kinetics and high chemical activity. The purpose of this work was to obtain magnetic composites, determine their physicochemical characteristics and verify their activity in the process of liquid-phase oxidation of phenol with oxygen. Magnetic nanocomposites were obtained by chemical co-deposition of salts of ferrous and trivalent iron. The synthesized magnetic composites were studied by X-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and Mössbauer spectroscopy, IR-Fourier spectroscopy, elemental analysis. To increase the catalytic activity in oxidative processes, the magnetite surfaces were modified using cobalt nitrate salt. Further, CoFe2O4 was stabilized by adding polyethylenimine (PEI) as a surfactant. Preliminary studies of the oxidation of phenol with oxygen, as the most typical environmental pollutant were carried out on the obtained Fe3O4, CuFe2O4, CoFe2O4/PEI catalysts. The spectrum of the reaction product shows the presence of CH in the aromatic ring and double C=C bonds, stretching vibrations of the C=O groups of carbonyl compounds; the band at 3059 cm–1 corresponds to the presence of double C=C bonds, the band at 3424 cm–1 hydroquinone compounds. The band at 1678 cm–1 and the intense band at 1646 cm–1 refer to vibrations of the С=О bonds of the carbonyl group of benzoquinone. Peaks at 1366 cm–1 and 1310 cm–1 can be related to the vibrations of C–H and C–C bonds of the quinone ring. Thus it was demonstrated that produced magnetic composites based on iron oxide are quite effective in the oxidation of phenol with oxygen.

Brain tissue segmentation is an important component of clinical diagnosis of brain diseases by means of multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MR). Brain tissue segmentation is developed by many unsupervised methods in literature. The most commonly used unsupervised methods are: K-Means, Expectation Maximization and Fuzzy Clustering. Fuzzy clustering methods offer considerable benefits compared with the aforementioned methods as they are capable of handling brain images which are complex, largely uncertain and imprecise in nature. However, this approach suffers from the intrinsic noise and intensity inhomogeneity (IIH) in the data resulted from the acquisition process. To resolve these issues, we propose a fuzzy consensus clustering algorithm that defines a membership function resulted from a voting schema to cluster the pixels. In particular, we first pre-process the MRI data and employ several segmentation techniques based on traditional fuzzy sets and intuitionistic sets. Then, we adopted a voting schema to fuse the results of the applied clustering methods. Finally, to evaluate the proposed method, we used the well-known performance measures (boundary measure, overlap measure and volume measure) on two publicly available datasets (OASIS and IBSR18). The experimental results show the superior performance of the proposed method in comparison with the recent state of the arts.

Granular superconductivity at high temperatures in graphite can emerge at certain two-dimensional (2D) stacking faults (SFs) between regions with twisted (around the c-axis) or untwisted crystalline regions with Bernal (ABA...) and/or rhombohedral (ABCABCA...) stacking order. One way to observe experimentally such 2D superconductivity is to measure the frozen magnetic flux produced by a permanent current loop that remains after removing an external magnetic field applied normal to the SFs. Magnetic force microscopy was used to localize and characterize such a permanent current path found in one natural graphite sample out of ∼50 measured graphite samples of different origins. The position of the current path drifts with time and roughly follows a logarithmic time dependence similar to the one for flux creep in type II superconductors. We demonstrate that a ≃10nm deep scratch on the sample surface at the position of the current path causes a change in its location. A further scratch was enough to irreversibly destroy the remanent state of the sample at room temperature. Our studies clarify some of the reasons for the difficulties of finding a trapped flux in remanent state at room temperature in graphite samples with SFs.

In this paper, we have shown the electronic circuit equivalence of a mechanical system consists of two oscillators coupled with each other. The mechanical design has the effects of the magnetic, resistance forces and the spring constant of the system is periodically varying. We have shown that the system’s state variables, such as the displacements and the velocities, under the effects of different forces, lead to some nonlinear behaviors, like a transition from the fixed point attractor to the chaotic attractor through the periodic and quasi-periodic attractors. We have constructed the equivalent electronic circuit of this mechanical system and have verified the numerically obtained behaviors using the electronic circuit.

Simultaneously being a non-radiative and non-invasive technique makes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) one of the highly sought imaging techniques for the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Despite more than four decades of research on finding a suitable imaging agent from fluorine for clinical applications, it still lingers as a challenge to get the regulatory approval compared to its hydrogen counterpart. The pertinent hurdle is the simultaneous intrinsic hydrophobicity and lipophobicity of fluorine and its derivatives that make them insoluble in any liquids, strongly limiting their application in areas such as targeted delivery. A blossoming technique to circumvent the unfavorable physicochemical characteristics of perfluorocarbon compounds (PFCs) and guarantee a high local concentration of fluorine in the desired body part is to encapsulate them in nanosystems. In this review, we will be emphasizing different types of nanocarrier systems studied to encapsulate various PFCs and fluorinated compounds, headway to be applied as a contrast agent (CA) in fluorine-19 MRI (19F MRI). We would also scrutinize the different types of PFCs and their specific applications and limitations concerning the nanoparticle (NP) system used to encapsulate them studied over the last decade. A critical evaluation for future opportunities would be speculated.

Amyloid-beta plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. Aberrant amyloid-beta and tau accumulation induce neuroinflammation, cerebrovascular alterations, synaptic deficits, functional deficits, and neurodegeneration, leading to cognitive impairment. Animal models recapitulating the amyloid-beta pathology such as transgenic, knock-in mouse and rat models have facilitated the understanding of disease mechanisms and development of therapeutics targeting at amyloid-beta. There is a rapid advance in high-field MR in small animals. Versatile high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences such as diffusion tensor imaging, arterial spin labelling, resting-state functional MRI, anatomical MRI, MR spectroscopy as well as contrast agents have been developed for the applications in animal models. These tools have enabled high-resolution in vivo structural, functional, and molecular readouts with a whole brain field-of-view. MRI have been utilized to visualize non-invasively the amyloid-beta deposits, synaptic deficits, regional brain atrophy, impairment in white matter integrity, functional connectivity, cerebrovascular and glymphatic system in animal models of amyloidosis. Many of the readouts are translational in clinical MRI in the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. In this review, we summarize the recent advance of using MRI for visualizing the pathophysiology in amyloidosis animal model. We discuss the outstanding challenges in brain imaging using MRI in small animal and propose future outlook in visualizing amyloid-beta-related alterations in brain of animal models.

Appling the controlling relative permittivity and permeability in the equations for the gravitational-magnetic-electric field interaction, a very large variation of the gravitational acceleration of the Earth by electric/magnetic field could be arrived at. This conclusion may be supported by some of the experiments for the gravitational effect of superconductivity.

The liver is a key node of whole-body nutrient and fuel metabolism and is also the principal site for detoxification of xenobiotic compounds. As such, hepatic metabolite concentrations and/or turnover rates inform the status of both hepatic and systemic metabolic diseases as well as the disposition of medications. As a tool to better understand liver metabolism in these settings, in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) offers a non-invasive means of monitoring hepatic metabolic activity in real time both by direct observation of concentrations and dynamics of specific metabolites as well as by observation of their enrichment by stable isotope tracers. This review summarizes the applications and advances in human liver metabolic studies by in vivo MRS over the past 35 years and discusses future directions and opportunities that will be opened by the development of ultra-high field MR systems and by hyperpolarized stable isotope tracers.

In this paper, the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) type of neural networks is used for the inductance calculation of variable inductors. The relation between the inductance of the inductor in the linear and nonlinear regions is investigated, and parameters such as the voltage across the inductor, bias current, and ac current are taken into account. The experimental setup is used for generating the data needed for training the neural network. Over 800 experiments were conducted and were used for training and validation of the neural network results. The results are compared with the reluctance equivalent circuit method, and they show a much better accuracy. The proposed method can be used for the calculation of various magnetic components, and it is not limited to variable inductors.
