Net CO2 emissions and sequestration from European forests are the result of removal and growth of flora. To arrive at aggregated measurements of these processes at a country's level, local observations of increments and harvest rates are up-scaled to national forest areas. Each country releases these statistics through their individual National Forest Inventory using their particular definitions and methodologies. In addition, five international processes deal with the harmonization and comparability of such forest datasets in Europe, namely the IPCC, SOEF, FAOSTAT, HPFFRE, FRA (definitions follow in the article). In this study, we retrieved living biomass dynamics from each of these sources for 27 European Union member states. To demonstrate the reproducibility of our method, we release an open source python package that allows for automated data retrieval and analysis, as new data becomes available. The comparison of the published values shows discrepancies in the magnitude of forest biomass changes for several countries. In some cases, the direction of these changes also differ between sources. The scarcity of the data provided, along with the low spatial resolution, forbids the creation or calibration of a pan-European forest dynamics model, which could ultimately be used to simulate future scenarios and support policy decisions. To attain these goals, an improvement in forest data availability and harmonization is needed.

The road traffic injuries risk factors such as driving offenses and average speed are concerns for health organizations to reduce the number of injuries. Without any comprehensive view of each road, one cannot decide about the effective policy. In this manner, the data-driven policy will help to improve and assess the decisions. The count data near the road of two airports is surveyed for investigating the time-varying speed zones. The descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and functional data analysis were used. The hourly data of traffic counts for four different locations at the entrance of the two airports, international and domestics, were collected for one the year 2018 to 2019.The hourly pattern of driving offenses for each road was assessed and the to and from airport roads had different peaks (<0.05). The hour, weekdays, type of airport, direction and their interactions were statistically significant (<0.05) for the chance of driving offenses. The speed average during the day was statistically different (<0.5) by the number of different types of vehicles. The traffic count data is a great resource for decision making in safe driving subjects such as driving offenses. With functional data analysis, we can analyze them to get the most of the characteristics of this data. The airports are public places with high traffic demand in all countries that yields the different pattern of traffic transportation, therefore we extract the factors that affect the driving offenses. Finally, we conclude that conducting a time-varying speed zone near the airports seems vital.

Dyadic data which is also called co-occurrence data (COD) contains co-occurrences of objects. Searching for statistical models to represent dyadic data is necessary. Fortunately, finite mixture model is a solid statistical model to learn and make inference on dyadic data because mixture model is built smoothly and reliably by expectation maximization (EM) algorithm which is suitable to inherent spareness of dyadic data. This research summarizes mixture models for dyadic data. When each co-occurrence in dyadic data is associated with a value, there are many unaccomplished values because a lot of co-occurrences are inexistent. In this research, these unaccomplished values are estimated as mean (expectation) of random variable given partial probabilistic distributions inside dyadic mixture model.

Over the years, there has been a significant rise in the world's scientific knowledge. However, most of it lacks structure and is often termed as Dark Data. Both humans and expert systems have continually faced difficulty in analyzing and comprehending such overwhelming amounts of information which is crucial in solving several real-world problems. Information and data visualization techniques proffer a promising solution to explore such data by allowing quick comprehension of information, the discovery of emerging trends, identification of relationships and patterns, etc. In this tutorial, we utilize the rich corpus of PubMed comprising of more than 30 million citations from biomedical literature to visually explore and understand the underlying key-insights using various information visualization techniques. With this study, we aim to diminish the limitation of human cognition and perception in handling and examining such large volumes of data by speeding up the process of decision making and pattern recognition and enabling decision-makers to fully understand data insights and make informed decisions.

Data papers have emerged as a powerful instrument for open data publishing, obtaining credit, and establishing priority for datasets generated in scientific experiments. Academic publishing improves data and metadata quality through peer-review and increases the impact of datasets by enhancing their visibility, accessibility, and re-usability. We aimed to establish a new type of article structure and template for omics studies: the omics data paper. To improve data interoperability and further incentivise researchers to publish high-quality data sets, we created a workflow for streamlined import of omics metadata directly into a data paper manuscript. An omics data paper template was designed by defining key article sections which encourage the description of omics datasets and methodologies. The workflow was based on REpresentational State Transfer services and Xpath to extract information from the European Nucleotide Archive, ArrayExpress and BioSamples databases, which follow community-agreed standards. The workflow for automatic import of standard-compliant metadata into an omics data paper manuscript facilitates the authoring process. It demonstrates the importance and potential of creating machine-readable and standard-compliant metadata. The omics data paper structure and workflow to import omics metadata improves the data publishing landscape by providing a novel mechanism for creating high-quality, enhanced metadata records, peer reviewing and publishing of these. It constitutes a powerful addition for distribution, visibility, reproducibility and re-usability of scientific data. We hope that streamlined metadata re-use for scholarly publishing encourages authors to improve the quality of their metadata to achieve a truly FAIR data world.

While Twitter has been touted to provide up-to-date information about hazard events, the reliability of tweets is still a concern. Our previous publication extracted relevant tweets containing information about the 2013 Colorado flood event and its impacts. Using the relevant tweets, this research further examined the reliability (accuracy and trueness) of the tweets by examining the text and image content and comparing them to other publicly available data sources. Both manual identification of text information and automated (Google Cloud Vision API) extraction of images were implemented to balance accurate information verification and efficient processing time. The results showed that both the text and images contained useful information about damaged/flooded roads/street networks. This information will help emergency response coordination efforts and informed allocation of resources when enough tweets contain geocoordinates or locations/venue names. This research will help identify reliable crowdsourced risk information to enable near-real time emergency response through better use of crowdsourced risk communication platforms.

The mobile devices caused a constant struggle for the pursuit of data privacy. Nowadays, it appears that the number of mobile devices in the world is increasing. With this increase and technological evolution, thousands of data associated with everyone are generated and stored remotely. Thus, the topic of data privacy is highlighted in several areas. There is a need for control and management of data in circulation inherent to this theme. This article presents an approach of the interaction between the individual and the public environment, where this interaction will determine the access to information. This analysis was based on a data privacy management model in public environments created after reading and analyzing the current technologies. A mobile application based on location via Global Positioning System (GPS) was created to substantiate this model, which it considers the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to control and manage access to the data of each individual.

Big Data in medicine includes possibly fast processing of large data sets, both current and historical in purpose supporting the diagnosis and therapy of patients' diseases. Support systems for these activities may include pre-programmed rules based on data obtained from the interview medical and automatic analysis of test results diagnostic results will lead to classification of observations to a specific disease entity. The current revolution using Big Data significantly expands the role of computer science in achieving these goals, which is why we propose a Big Data computer data processing system using artificial intelligence to analyze and process medical images.

In recent years, Web APIs have become a de facto standard for exchanging machine-readable data on the Web. Despite this success though, they often fail in making resource descriptions interoperable due to the fact that they rely on proprietary vocabularies that lack formal semantics. The Linked Data principles similarly seek the massive publication of data on the Web, yet with the specific goal of ensuring semantic interoperability. Given their complementary goals, it is commonly admitted that cross-fertilization could stem from the automatic combination of Linked Data and Web APIs. Towards this goal, in this paper we leverage the micro-service architectural principles to define a SPARQL Micro-Service architecture, aimed at querying Web APIs using SPARQL. A SPARQL micro-service is a lightweight SPARQL endpoint that provides access to a small, resource-centric, virtual graph. In this context, we argue that full SPARQL Query expressiveness can be supported efficiently without jeopardizing servers availability. Furthermore, we demonstrate how this architecture can be used to dynamically assign dereferenceable URIs to Web API resources that do not have URIs beforehand, thus literally ``bringing'' Web APIs into the Web of Data. We believe that the emergence of an ecosystem of SPARQL micro-services published by independent providers would enable Linked Data-based applications to easily glean pieces of data from a wealth of distributed, scalable and reliable services. We describe a working prototype implementation and we finally illustrate the use of SPARQL micro-services in the context of two real-life use cases related to the biodiversity domain, developed in collaboration with the French National Museum of Natural History.

Transportation of goods is as old as human civilizations : past networks and their evolution shed light on long term trends. Transportation impact on climate change is measured as major, as well as the impact on spreading a pandemic. These two reasons motivate the importance of providing relevant and reliable historical geographic datasets of these networks. This paper focuses on reconstructing the railway network in France at its maximal extent, a century ago. The active stations and lines are well documented by the French SNCF, in open public data. However, that information ignores past stations (ante 1980), which represent probably more than what is recorded in public data. Additional open data, individual or collaborative (eg. Wikipedia) are particularly valuable, but they are not always geo-coded, and two more sources are necessary to completing that geo-coding: ancient maps and aerial photography. Therefore, remote sensing and volunteer geographic information are the two pillars of past railway reconstruction. The methods developed are adapted to the extraction of information from these sources: automated parsing of Wikipedia Infoboxes, data extraction from simple tables, even from simple text. That series of sparse procedures can be merged into a comprehensive computer-assisted process. Beyond this, a huge effort in quality control is necessary when merging these data: automated wherever possible, or finally visually controlled by observation of remote sensing information. The main output is a reliable dataset, under ODbl, of more than 9100 stations, which can be combined with the information about the 35000 communes of France, for a large variety of studies. This work demonstrates two thesis: (a) it is possible to reconstruct transport network data from the past, and generic computer assisted methods can be developed; (b) the value of remote sensing and volunteered geo info is considerable (what archeologists already know).

Species distribution models (SDMs) are usually used to predict current species’ geographic distributions and to forecast the impact of climate change, with different aims, such as conservation, and biodiversity management. SDMs use has been increasing in the last decades, however, they are vulnerable to parametrization and data quality input. Thus, inappropriate input can lead to potential unreliability in results. In this context, the most used data and methodologies in SDM, and putative deviations from the consensual best practices, were identified, by analysing recent literature (2018 to 2022). Results show that the parameters presented more consistently are the chosen algorithm (MaxEnt was used in 98% of the studies), the accuracy measures, and the time windows. Many papers fail to specify other parameters, limiting the reproducibility of the studies. Some papers also fail to provide information about the target species: only a fraction of the species' range is considered, or no justification for including specific variables in the model is provided. These options can decrease reliability in predictions under future scenarios since data provided to the model is inaccurate from the start or there is insufficient information for outputs discussion.

Springs play a significant role in maintaining hydrological balance in the mountain ecosystem. The communities living in the mountain tops rely entirely on spring water for their daily needs. In recent decades, spring water discharges have decreased drastically in the Himalayan regions and become seasonal. Remote sensing and geographical information system techniques have proved to be essential for understanding the sustainable development of groundwater, particularly where people rely solely on spring water in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas. This study employs the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to identify groundwater potential zones. It involves overlaying seven thematic layers concerning elements of physical features and land-use/land-cover of the region, using the weighted overlay toolbox in ArcGIS, with each layer being assigned a weight based on its importance. Based on the results, groundwater potential zones have been classified into five categories: poor, fair, good, very good, and excellent. The study found that poor groundwater potential zones cover 1.1% of the area, fair zones cover 27.8%, good zones cover 23.3%, very good zones cover 26.6%, and excellent zones cover 21.2% of the total area. The excellent to very good potential zones are associated with perennial springs that have higher discharge (4.30-30.92 l/m), lineaments, rainfall, forested land, and porous soils, favoring the potentiality of the springs. The fair and poor groundwater potential zones are associated with seasonal flowing springs, consisting of barren land, less rainfall, and low fracture density are influencing the potentiality groundwater. The validation of the groundwater potential zones indicated an Area Under Curve (AUC) value of 0.88, which shows good agreement with observed spring water locations. The identified groundwater potential zones are valuable for prioritizing the area for the sustainable development of spring water. Particularly, it is helpful for the stakeholder departments to involved in developing strategies for sustainable water management at the micro-watershed level and safeguarding spring water resources using integrated watershed management.

This paper presents the findings of an exploratory study on the continuously generating Big Data on Twitter related to the sharing of information, news, views, opinions, ideas, knowledge, feedback, and experiences about the COVID-19 pandemic, with a specific focus on the Omicron variant, which is the globally dominant variant of SARS-CoV-2 at this time. A total of 12028 tweets about the Omicron variant were studied, and the specific characteristics of tweets that were analyzed include - sentiment, language, source, type, and embedded URLs. The findings of this study are manifold. First, from sentiment analysis, it was observed that 50.5% of tweets had the ‘neutral’ emotion. The other emotions - ‘bad’, ‘good’, ‘terrible’, and ‘great’ were found in 15.6%, 14.0%, 12.5%, and 7.5% of the tweets, respectively. Second, the findings of language interpretation showed that 65.9% of the tweets were posted in English. It was followed by Spanish or Castillian, French, Italian, Japanese, and other languages, which were found in 10.5%, 5.1%, 3.3%, 2.5%, and <2% of the tweets, respectively. Third, the findings from source tracking showed that “Twitter for Android” was associated with 35.2% of tweets. It was followed by “Twitter Web App”, “Twitter for iPhone”, “Twitter for iPad”, “TweetDeck”, and all other sources that accounted for 29.2%, 25.8%, 3.8%, 1.6%, and <1% of the tweets, respectively. Fourth, studying the type of tweets revealed that retweets accounted for 60.8% of the tweets, it was followed by original tweets and replies that accounted for 19.8% and 19.4% of the tweets, respectively. Fifth, in terms of embedded URL analysis, the most common domains embedded in the tweets were found to be twitter.com, which was followed by biorxiv.org, nature.com, wapo.st, nzherald.co.nz, recvprofits.com, science.org, and other URLs. Finally, to support similar research and development in this field centered around the analysis of tweets, we have developed an open-access Twitter dataset that comprises tweets about the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant since the first detected case of this variant on November 24, 2021.

This study explores the potential of digital technologies for preserving cultural heritage through the case study of the Raya Gopura, an incomplete monument in Melukote, India. Employing a combination of terrestrial photogrammetry, drone-based photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning, the research team captured highly detailed 3D models of the structure. This non-destructive approach offers a comprehensive digital record for future research and preservation. Furthermore, for the conjecture for the Raya Gopura two possible purposes: an entrance to a planned fort or a gateway to the temple are perceived through the collective intelligence (CI) approach. These insights inform a conjectural architectural drawing of the potentially completed monument. The 3D models hold significant potential for various applications, including tourism, education, and architectural research, with the potential for immersive experiences through VR and AR technologies. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of digital tools in heritage preservation, not only safeguarding the Raya Gopura but also offering valuable in-sights for future research and public engagements.

With the increasing incidents of fatal road injuries, there is an urgent need for developing effective road safety management systems. The study aims to develop predictive models based on machine learning to forecast the likelihood of road collisions depending on factors like weather, road condition, time, and driver behaviour in Chicago, USA. A machine learning approach has been applied to the crash dataset to evaluate the factors affecting the prevalence of road accidents. Python programming and the Jupyter Notebook platform have been used for performing descriptive statistics, correlation and three classification algorithms (Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Decision Tree and MLP Classification). Obtained accuracy of the KNN classifier is slightly higher than the other two classification models. The research explored insights into collision patterns related to roads, locations, and intersections. The study helps to increase road safety through targeted interventions with resource prioritisation, reducing the frequency and severity of traffic incidents by leveraging historical accident data with diverse spatial analysis techniques.

Background: Fold change is widely used in biomedical research to quantify the magnitude of group differences in omics variables. However, the exact calculation method is often not reported, leading to inconsistent results. This study re-evaluates different fold-change calculation methods and provides a clear preference. Methods: Data scenarios with different distributions of treatment/test and reference data were created to challenge the assumption of interchangeable calculation methods. The main difference lies in the definition of the expected values of the groups used to calculate the log ratio, which is the basis of the fold change calculation. In addition, a multi-omics biomedical dataset was analyzed. Results: Using the arithmetic mean as the expected value for the treatment and reference groups resulted in incorrect fold change values more frequently than other methods, especially when the standard deviations between subgroups differed widely. Conclusions: The inferior arithmetic mean method is often perceived as the standard, although mathematically different equations are possible that differ mainly in the estimation of the expected value. Alternatives that define expectation by median, geometric mean, or paired fold change combinations are less susceptible to violations of equal variances or similar treatment/reference distributions.

A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser was focused on Pb-Ti alloy samples in several Laser Induced Breakdown experiments in order to measure the Stark parameters of several spectral lines (58) of single ionized Titanium including the 3504.89 Å, and the 3510.83 Ålines (where we aported new experimental and theoretical values).Diagnostics of the laser induced plasmas (electron density and electron temperature) was performed using Balmer’s H alpha line (6562.7 Å).Temperatures were obtained by the Boltzmann Plot technique with spectral lines of Pb I (after correction for its evident self-absorption).Subsequently, calculations by the Griem approach of the Stark broadening parameters for several spectral lines were performed using the Gaunt factors proposed by Van Regemorter and those proposed by Douglas H. Sampson. In the latter cases the values obtained were very close to the experimental values. It allows us to assume that the calculations made for the spectral lines of Ti II, without experimental information, are more accurate using the Gaunt factors proposed by Sampson.

Objectives: Data sharing has become a requirement of many funding bodies and is becoming a scientific standard in many disciplines. In medical research, however, data sharing can conflict with clinicians’ obligation to protect patients’ privacy. General recommendations on data sharing exist also for clinical research, but so far lack practical and Swiss-specific aspects. The objective of this document is to provide practical recommendations for all relevant aspects of data sharing in agreement with legislation in Switzerland. Methods: This document was written by members of the Swiss CTU Network, a network of academic clinical trial units. The process did not follow a formalized Delphi process. After an internal consensus round, this report is now published as pre-print for external review. A second version will incorporate external comments. We plan to publish this document as a text in progress, as we expect relevant changes in related fields such as the development of further dedicated medical repositories or methodological advances in anonymization techniques. Results: We developed principles and practical recommendations with respect to informed consent, data management plan, anonymization, data structure and format, coding of variables, metadata and documentation, version control, selection of repository, requesting and use of data. We also provide a summary of legal aspects relevant for the Swiss context. Conclusions: The intension to share data has an impact not only after a clinical trial or an observational study is completed, but also during the planning period, the conduct and the analysis phase. Clinical researchers need to be aware at the beginning of a study on how to inform patients and at least the amount of work related to preparing data for sharing, metadata, and any further documentation. This report provides details of aspects to be considered, suggests decision criteria, and provides examples and checklists, in order to support data sharing in practice.

The advent of the era of big data has led to the emergence of heterogeneous network data fusion as a prominent area of research. Heterogeneous network data is characterised by multi-modality, multi-source, and high dimensionality, which presents significant challenges for traditional data fusion methods. These methods often encounter difficulties in processing such data, including issues such as information redundancy, data inconsistency, and high computational complexity. This paper proposes a heterogeneous network data fusion model based on a deep neural network. The model employs the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) as its fundamental framework, utilising the deep neural network to facilitate joint feature representation learning on data from disparate modalities. The Adaptive Feature Reconstruction Module enables the model to learn the interrelationships between different modalities and to balance the importance of different modal features in the fusion process in a dynamic manner. Furthermore, we introduce an innovative cross-modal attention mechanism, which is capable of effectively capturing the coupling relationship between deep features in heterogeneous data, thereby enhancing the expressiveness and data fusion efficacy of the model. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model markedly enhances the accuracy of classification and regression tasks in comparison to traditional methodologies.

An information-theoretic data mining method is employed to analyze categorical spatiotemporal Geographic Information System land use data. Reconstructability Analysis (RA) is a maximum-entropy-based data modeling methodology that works exclusively with discrete data such as those in the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The NLCD are organized into a spatial (raster) grid, and are available in consistent format for every five years from 2001 to 2021. An NLCD tool reports how much change occurred for each category of land use; for the study area examined the most dynamic class is Evergreen Forest (EFO), so the presence or absence of EFO in 2021 was chosen as the dependent variable that our data modeling attempts to predict. RA predicts the outcome with approximately 80% accuracy using a sparse set of cells from a spacetime data cube consisting of neighboring lagged-time cells. When the predicting cells are all Shrubs &amp; Grasses there is a high probability for a 2021 state of EFO, while when the predicting cells are all EFO, there is a high probability that the 2021 state will be not-EFO. These findings are interpreted as detecting forest clear-cut cycles that show up in the data, and explain why this class is so dynamic. This study introduces a new approach to analyzing GIS categorical data and expands the range of applications that this entropy-based methodology can successfully model.

It underscores the importance of a proactive approach to internet regulation, emphasizing the critical need for robust mechanisms to uphold individual privacy rights while fostering responsible information dissemination.

Quantum computing represents a paradigm shift in computational power, promising exponential speedups for solving certain classes of problems. However, harnessing the full potential of quantum computers requires effective utilization of data science techniques. In this review paper, we explore the intersection of data science and quantum computing, focusing on the role of data analytics in advancing quantum computing applications. We begin with an overview of quantum computing fundamentals, including quantum mechanics principles and quantum algorithms. We then delve into topics such as quantum data representation, manipulation, and machine learning algorithms tailored for quantum computing environments. Additionally, we discuss quantum error correction and noise mitigation strategies essential for reliable quantum computation. Furthermore, we survey the landscape of quantum software development tools and frameworks, highlighting their importance in facilitating quantum algorithm design and optimization. Through case studies and examples, we demonstrate the practical applications of data science techniques in quantum computing, including quantum cryptography and quantum-enhanced data analysis. Finally, we identify future research directions and challenges in the field, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration between the data science and quantum computing communities to unlock the full potential of quantum data science.

The company strategic procurement function makes a significant contribution to overall corporate success, and yet remains under-researched in terms of digitalisation and digital maturity. This research adopts an inductive case study approach, using qualitative data from in-depth inter-views with industry practitioners, to develop and apply a digital maturity model for the deployment of strategic procurement analytics. The research presents a snapshot of the digital maturity of the strategic procurement function of a global aircraft manufacturer, and finds that current exploitation of analytics remains constrained by a range of factors, including the need for close compliance with regulatory norms. Thematic analysis of the interview material provides the basis for the development of the maturity model, which - although geared to a specific industry context - is nevertheless of relevance in other business environments. The research thus con-tributes to the existing literature in this field, and will also be of interest to procurement professionals. However, the research clearly has its limitations, not least in that it is based on just one industry case, and cross-industry generalisations from the findings must therefore be treated with caution.

This paper presents a systematic approach to developing big data analytics for manufacturing process-relevant decision-making activities from the perspective of smart manufacturing. The proposed analytics consists of five integrated system components: 1) data preparation system, 2) data exploration system, 3) data visualization system, 4) data analysis system, and 5) knowledge extraction system. The functional requirements of the integrated systems are elucidated. In addition, JAVA- and spreadsheet-based systems are developed to realize the proposed integrated system components. Finally, the efficacy of the analytics is demonstrated using a case study where the goal is to determine the optimal material removal conditions of a dry electrical discharge machining operation. The analytics identified the variables (among voltage, current, pulse-off time, gas pressure, and rotational speed) that effectively maximize the material removal rate. It also identified the variables that do not contribute to the optimization process. The analytics also quantified the underlying uncertainty. In synopsis, the proposed approach results in transparent, big-data-inequality-free, and less resource-dependent data analytics, which is desirable for small and medium enterprises—the actual sites where machining is carried out.

Cloud computing appears to be the dreamed vision of the healthcare industry; it refers to means of storing and accessing data and programs over the internet instead of the computer’s hard drive. However, the adoption of cloud computing requires solving several issues and infor-mation privacy is a major one. This work proposes a cloud architecture design for the healthcare information system. The proposed architecture enables for storing and sharing information in a privacy-preserving manner. Patients’ information in the proposed architecture is divided into four categories identified in the case study data analysis. User identity management protocol (U-IDM) is employed for controlling the access to patients’ information, and patients have means of control over who can access their information. A scenario-based instantiation validated the proposed architecture's privacy-preserving patient data exchange. The instantiation proved that the proposed architecture allows sharing healthcare information without violating the privacy of patients.

Outliers can influence regression model parameters and change the direction of the estimated effect, over-estimating or under-estimating the strength of the association between a response variable and an exposure of interest. Identifying visit-level outliers from longitudinal data with continuous time-dependent covariates is important especially when the distribution of such variable is highly skewed at follow-up visits. The primary objective was to identify potential outliers at follow-up visits using interquartile range (IQR) statistic, motivated by a large TEDDY dietary longitudinal and time-to-event data with a continuous time varying vitamin B12 intake as the exposure of interest and time to developing Islet Autoimmunity (IA) as the response variable. The IQR method was also applied to simulated data. To assess the impact of IQR-method detected outliers, data was analyzed using Cox-proportional hazard model with robust sandwich estimator. Partial residual diagnostic plots were used to detect highly influential outliers. Results showed how some of the detected outliers had large influence on the Cox regression model and changed both the direction of hazard ratios and the strength of association with the risk of developing IA. In conclusion, the IQR method is useful in identifying potential outliers at visit-level which can be further investigated.

The abundance of information in academic articles, reports, and studies can make it challenging for researchers to gain insights from the existing literature. To address this issue, there is a growing demand for tools that can help researchers effectively parse and analyze large volumes of data. One such tool is DataDiscoveryLab, a software system that utilizes computer vision algorithms and NLP techniques to parse academic articles into text and figures, creating three separate databases. These databases allow researchers to quickly identify articles that may be relevant to their research questions, gain a deeper understanding of the research presented, and analyze visual data. The integration of article mining and computer vision in the DataDiscoveryLab software system provides researchers with a powerful tool for navigating the vast amount of scientific literature available today. Yet, as we will discuss in the latter papers these databases’ purpose is to create a bridge between researchers’ data and practically unlimited scientific publications. Yet, in this article, we will discuss how we plan to do that, and our efforts on integrating deep learning modes. After all, unlike already existing AI models, DataDiscoveryLab can be their combination and the first Generative AI in academia that can encompass every part of the natural sciences.

Natural hazards threaten millions of people all over the world. To address the risk, exposure and vulnerability models with high resolution data are essential. However, in many areas of the world, exposure models are rather coarse and aggregated over large areas. Although OpenStreetMap (OSM) offers great potential to assess risk at a detailed building-by-building level, completeness of OSM building footprints is still heterogeneous. We present an approach to close this gap by means of crowdsourcing based on the mobile App MapSwipe, where volunteers swipe through satellite images of a region collecting user feedback on classification tasks. For our application, MapSwipe was extended by a completeness feature that allows to classify a tile as “no building”, “complete” or “incomplete”. To assess the quality of the produced data, the completeness feature was applied at four regions. Our results show that the crowdsourced approach yields a reasonable classification performance of the completeness of OSM building footprints. Nevertheless, this study also revealed that volunteers tend to classify nearly completely mapped tiles as “complete”, especially in areas with a high OSM building density. Another factor that influenced the classification performance was the level of alignment of the OSM layer with the satellite imagery.

Functional Data Analysis (FDA) is a relatively new field of statistics dealing with data expressed in the form of functions. FDA methodologies can be easily extended to the study of imaging data, an application proposed in Wang et al. (2020), where the authors settle the mathematical groundwork and properties of the proposed estimators. This methodology allows for the estimation of mean functions and simultaneous confidence corridors (SCC), also known as simultaneous confidence bands, for imaging data and for the difference between two groups of images. This is especially relevant for the field of medical imaging, as one of the most extended research setups consists on the comparison between two groups of images, a pathological set against a control set. FDA applied to medical imaging presents at least two advantages compared to previous methodologies: it avoids loss of information in complex data structures and avoids the multiple comparison problem arising from traditional pixel-to-pixel comparisons. Nonetheless, computing times for this technique have only been explored in reduced and simulated setups (Arias-López et al., 2021). In the present article, we apply this procedure to a practical case with data extracted from open neuroimaging databases and then measure computing times for the construction of Delaunay triangulations, and for the computation of mean function and SCC for one-group and two-group approaches. The results suggest that previous researcher has been too conservative in its parameter selection and that computing times for this methodology are reasonable, confirming that this method should be further studied and applied to the field of medical imaging.

The Benford method can be used to detect manipulation of epidemiological or trial data during the validation of new drugs. We extend here the Benford method after having detected particular properties for the Fibonacci values 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 of the first decimal of 10 runs of official epidemiological data published in France and Italy (positive cases, intensive care, and deaths) for the periods of March 1 to May 30, 2020 and 2021, each with 91 raw data. This new method – called “BFP” for Benford-Fibonacci-Perez - is positive in all 10 cases (i.e. 910 values) with an average of favorable cases close to 80%, which, in our opinion, would validate the reliability of these basic data.

The analysis of microscopy images has always been an important yet time consuming process in in materials science. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been very successfully used for a number of tasks, such as image segmentation. However, training a CNN requires a large amount of hand annotated data, which can be a problem for material science data. We present a procedure to generate synthetic data based on ad-hoc parametric data modelling for enhancing generalization of trained neural network models. Especially for situations where it is not possible to gather a lot of data, such an approach is beneficial and may enable to train a neural network reasonably. Furthermore, we show that targeted data generation by adaptively sampling the parameter space of the generative models gives superior results compared to generating random data points.

The 'big data revolution' has enabled novel types of analyses in the life sciences, facilitated by public sharing and reuse of datasets. Here, we review the prodigious potential of reusing publicly available datasets and the challenges, limitations and risks associated with it. Possible solutions to issues and research integrity considerations are also discussed. Due to the prominence, abundance and wide distribution of sequencing data, we focus on the reuse of publicly available sequence datasets. We define ‘successful reuse’ as the use of previously published data to enable novel scientific findings and use selected examples of such reuse from different disciplines to illustrate the enormous potential of the practice, while acknowledging their respective limitations and risks. A checklist to determine the reuse value and potential of a particular dataset is also provided. The open discussion of data reuse and the establishment of the practice as a norm has the potential to benefit all stakeholders in the life sciences.

In this paper, the set-membership affine projection (SM-AP) algorithm is utilized to censor non-informative data in big data applications. To this end, the probability distribution of the additive noise signal and the excess of mean-squared error (EMSE) in steady-state are employed in order to estimate the threshold parameter of the single threshold SM-AP (ST-SM-AP) algorithm aiming at attaining the desired update rate. Furthermore, by defining an acceptable range for the error signal, the double threshold SM-AP (DT-SM-AP) algorithm is proposed to detect very large errors due to the irrelevant data such as outliers. The DT-SM-AP algorithm can censor non-informative and irrelevant data in big data applications, and it can improve misalignment and convergence rate of the learning process with high computational efficiency. The simulation and numerical results corroborate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over traditional algorithms.

The increasing rate of adoption of innovative technological achievements along with the penetration of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the water sector, are leading to a shift to a Water-Smart Society. New challenges have emerged in terms of data interoperability, sharing, and trustworthiness due to the rapidly increasing volume of heterogeneous data generated by multiple technologies. Hence, there is a need for efficient harmonisation and smart modeling of the data to foster advanced AI analytical processes which will lead to efficient water data management. The main objective of this work is to propose two Smart Data Models focusing on the modeling of the Satellite Imaginary data and the Flood Risk Assessment processes. The utilisation of those models reinforces the fusion and homogenisation of diverse information and data facilitating the adoption of AI technologies for flood mapping and monitoring. Furthermore, a holistic framework has been developed and evaluated via qualitative and quantitative performance indicators revealing the efficacy of the proposed models concerning the usage of the models in real cases. The framework is based on the well-known and compatible technologies on NGSI-LD standards which are customised and applicable easily to support the water data management processes effectively.

In computer networks, loss of data packets is inevitable, in particular, because of the buffer memory overflow of at least one of the nodes located on the path from the source to the receiver, including the latter. Such losses associated with overflows are hereinafter referred to as congestion of network nodes. There are many ways to prevent and eliminate overloads; these methods, in the majority, are based on the management of data flows. A special place is taken by the maintenance of packages, taking into account their priorities. The article considers a number of original technical solutions to improve the quality of control and reduce the required amount of buffer memory of network nodes. The ideas of these solutions are quite simple for their implementation in the development of appropriate software and hardware for telecommunication devices.

The nature of contemporary Spatial Data Infrastructures lies in the provision of geospatial information in an on-demand fashion. Though recent applications identified the need to react to real-time information in a time-critical way. In particular, research efforts in the field of geospatial Internet of Things have identified substantial gaps in this context, ranging from a lack of standardization for event-based architectures to the meaningful handling of real-time information as ''events''. This manuscript presents work in the field of Event-driven Spatial Data Infrastructures with a particular focus on sensor networks and the devices capturing in-situ measurements. The current landscape of Spatial Data Infrastructures is outlined and used as the basis for identifying existing gaps that retain certain geospatial applications from using real-time information. We present a selection of approaches - developed in different research projects - to overcome these gaps. Being designed for specific application domains, these approaches share commonalities as well as orthogonal solutions and can build the foundation of an overall Event-driven Spatial Data Infrastructure.

Sensors available on mobile devices allow the automatic identification of Activities of Daily Living (ADL). This paper describes an approach for the creation of a framework for the identification of ADL, taking in account several concepts, including data acquisition, data processing, data fusion, pattern recognition, and machine learning. These concepts can be mapped in a module of the framework, including the use and creation of several algorithms. For the development of a framework that works in several conditions, e.g., without Internet connection, these algorithms should take in account the hardware and software limitations of the mobile devices to run all main tasks locally. The main purpose of this paper is related to the presentation the sensors, algorithms, and architecture of the proposed approach.

As an important part of coastal wetlands, tidal flats provide unique ecosystem services and functions. China's tidal flats are significantly threatened by industrialization, urbanization, aquaculture expansion and coastline reconstruction, and there is an urgent need for sustainable strategies to balance the protection and utilization of tidal flats. Remote sensing technology can realize large-scale spatiotemporal research of tidal flats, comprehensively improve the ecological environment of coastal zones, and help achieve the overall planning goals of major projects for the protection and restoration of important ecosystems in China. In this study, based on GEE (Google Earth Engine) platform, Sentinel-2 (MSI), Landsat 8 (OLI) and Landsat 9 (OLI-2) remote sensing images were used to construct multi-source intensive time series remote sensing image collection, combined with MSIC-OA algorithm. The tidal flat data of China in 2018 and 2023 are extracted and analyzed. The results show as follows: 1) The overall classification accuracy of the tidal flat in 2023 is 95.19%, and the Kappa coefficient is 0.89; In 2018, they were 92.77% and 0.83 respectively. 2) The total tidal flat area in 2018 and 2023 is 8300.34km2 and 8151.54km2, respectively, a decrease of 148.80km2; 3) In 2023, estuarine and bay tidal flats will account for 54.88% of the total area, and most of the tidal flats will be distributed near river inlets and bays; 4) In 2023, the total length of the coastline adjacent to the tidal flat is 10196.17km, of which the artificial shoreline accounts for 67.06%, and the development degree of the tidal flat is 2.04, indicating that most of the tidal flat has been developed and utilized. The research results provide valuable reference for the scientific planning and rational utilization of tidal flat resources in China.

Purpose: To evaluate prognostic factors for visual outcome in patients with diabetes who have undergone vitrectomy (PPV) for severe proliferative diabetic vitreo-retinopathy (PDVR) in at least one eye in the past 15 years. Methods: Medical records of 132 eyes of 66 patients were analyzed (median age 52ys 21-80; patients with type 1/2 diabetes 40/26, median follow-up 38 months 9-125). Correlation between final good visual outcome defined as 0.5≤ best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and prognostic factors (age, sex, type and duration of diabetes, metabolic status, BCVA, diabetic retinopathy status, data of preoperative management, data of vitrectomy, postoperative complications) were analyzed. Results: BCVA improved significantly in the entire study cohort (from median 0.05 min-max 0.001-1 to 0.32 0.001-1, p <0.000). Visual stabilization was achieved in the majority of patients, and relatively good visual acuity (0.5≤BCVA) was maintained in more than one third of eyes. Multivariable GEE statistics showed that in addition to duration of diabetes and stable HbA1c values, only preoperative tractional macular detachment proved to be an independent significant predictor of visual outcome. Conclusions: Pars plana vitrectomy is a useful tool when performed early before tractional macular detachment. However, long-term visual stability can only be achieved with good metabolic control.

Data privacy is a critical concern in health informatics, where the management of sensitive patient information requires robust and secure database systems. This study aims to explore the data privacy challenges faced in health informatics and conduct a comparative analysis of popular Database Management Systems (DBMS), including MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Oracle, with a focus on their effectiveness in safeguarding patient data. Through a review of existing literature, case studies, and interviews with database administrators, the research identifies common privacy threats such as data breaches and unauthorized access. It examines the security features of each DBMS, such as encryption methods, access controls, and user authentication mechanisms. The findings reveal variations in the privacy protection capabilities of different DBMS, highlighting the trade-offs between security, performance, and usability. The study provides recommendations for healthcare organizations in selecting a DBMS that balances privacy with operational needs and offers insights for policymakers to improve regulatory frameworks in health data security. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on enhancing data privacy in health informatics and suggests directions for future studies to integrate emerging technologies for more secure health data management.

This study introduces a data obfuscation technique, leveraging the exponential map associated with the generators of Lie groups. Originating from quantum machine learning frameworks, our method illustrates the practical application of quantum mechanics principles in data processing. Specifically, it employs the exponential map of a generator algebra to introduce controlled noise into the data, achieving obfuscated data while preserving its utility for machine learning tasks. This strategy is shown to safeguard privacy in sensitive datasets, such as discussed medical records, and to enhance dataset volume and diversity through augmentation. Our empirical analysis, benchmarked against standard machine learning approaches, demonstrates that our method can maintain or even improve the predictive accuracy of the original data. This research highlights the potential of Lie group theory for advancing data privacy in medicine, marking a significant contribution to machine learning methodologies by offering the dual benefits of data obfuscation and enrichment. Through this synthesis of algebraic structures and machine learning, we propose new pathways for the secure and effective use of data in sensitive areas.

Over the last few years, Earth Observation (EO) data has shifted towards increased use to produce official statistics, particularly in the agriculture sector. National statistics offices worldwide, including in Asia and the Pacific, are expanding their use of EO data to produce agricultural statistics such as crop classification, yield estimation, irrigation mapping, and crop loss estimation. The advances in image classification, such as pixel-based and phenology-based classifications, and machine learning create new opportunities for researchers to analyze EO data applied to agriculture statistics. However, it requires the ground truth (GT) data because classification result mainly depends on the quality of GT. Therefore, in this study, we introduced a random sampling approach to design and collect GT data using EO imagery and ancillary data. As a result of data collection, GT data improve the algorithms and validates classification results. Nevertheless, despite the importance of GT data, they are rarely disseminated as a data product in themselves. Thus, this results in an untapped opportunity to share GT data as a global public good, and improved use of survey and census data as a source of GT data.

The Release of government dataset for public use can potentially strengthen the relationship between the government and its constituents. However, research shows that there are several challenges for open data effectiveness. This paper reviews current determinants and issues associated with the open government data (OGD) procedures. The review concentrates on two ends of the spectrum: First, from the perspective of the preparation by the government, focusing on the organization of traditional governmental datasets and how the recording of the data is administered. Second, from the perspective of the users, focusing on the way in which the data is released to the general public and on human-computer interaction (HCI) issues between end-user and data-consumption interfaces. Following a thorough analysis of these two opposing challenges, the paper proposes approaches to mitigate them. This review and subsequent recommendations contribute and expand current understanding of open government data effectiveness and can lead to public policy changes, development of new procedures and strategies, and ultimately improvements at both ends of the federal open data endeavor.

Aims: To compare traditional versus dry wipes hygiene in hospitalized, bedridden patients with regard to economic and environmental impact and patient and professional satisfaction. Background: Evidence shows that dry hygiene with disposable wipes can reduce the risk of infection compared to traditional hygiene with soap and water. However, there is a need to compare the costs and environmental impact (waste) between the two methods. Design: Environmental impact and patient and user satisfaction were assessed through an ad hoc survey and cost minimization analysis in accordance with the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards. Methods: The environmental impact and costs associated with traditional versus dry hygiene were compared in an observational analysis. A single-center, randomized controlled trial was performed in a tertiary hospital to assess patient and professional satisfaction in patients with a urinary catheter recovering from heart surgery between January 2019 and February 2020. Results: Direct hygiene costs were similar using traditional (€15.82) and dry (€14.35) methods. However, the analysis of indirect costs, including those related to the probability of contracting catheter-associated urinary tract infections, showed that the total cost per hygiene session was €1345 higher with the traditional method. When using a high-efficiency energy system from a guaranteed renewable source, dry hygiene does not lead to a higher environmental impact (220.07 g CO2 traditional vs. 215.17g CO2 dry). However, emissions from conventional energy systems are 840.14 g CO2 higher when using traditional hygiene. Both patients and professionals express greater satisfaction with the dry method. Conclusion: Dry hygiene is not inferior to traditional hygiene in terms of satisfaction, and it can provide environmental benefits at a significantly lower cost. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: This study provides evidence supporting the introduction of the dry hygiene method, with is associated with higher user and professional satisfaction, lower economic cost, and similar or lower environmental impact compared to soap and water.

Big data quality is all about ensuring that the huge amounts of data are accurate, reliable, and useful. It is important because decisions made based on this data can affect many things, like business strategies, customer experiences, and even public policies. Many researchers are studying data quality in the context of big data. This study aims to analyze the research trends and patterns within the domain of big data quality. This method reveals hidden themes in large datasets, helping to understand data quality better. The findings show that Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is effective for topic modeling in big data, highlighting data quality challenges and opportunities. The research identified key trends and effective assessment methods. For researchers, using LDA in a systematic review helps summarize existing studies and find gaps, guiding future research. Practitioners and future researchers get useful direction for managing data quality and improving efficiency and decisions in various industries.

The exponential growth of publicly available omics data presents both an opportunity and a challenge for biomedical researchers, particularly those in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Collective Omics Data to Knowledge (CD2K) initiative aims to address this challenge by providing an accessible framework for biomedical research training. This review describes the development and implementation of the CD2K program, which comprises three core modules: COD1 (reductionist interpretation of collective omics data), COD2 (creation of curated dataset collections), and COD3 (re-analysis of omics data on a global scale). The CD2K approach emphasizes the reuse and reinterpretation of public data, integrating literature mining and emerging technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs). A key feature of the program is its focus on accessibility, designed to make the exploitation of large-scale datasets amenable to researchers without extensive data science skills. The curriculum aims to equip trainees with a range of skills, from basic data interpretation to more advanced bioinformatics analysis, with an emphasis on producing tangible outputs such as peer-reviewed publications, which directly address career development needs. The CD2K initiative has involved researchers from multiple institutions across several countries, resulting in several publications and publicly available dataset collections. While still in its early stages, the program shows promise in providing a structured framework for leveraging public omics data in biomedical research. This review also discusses the current limitations of the CD2K approach and ongoing efforts to expand its reach. By offering an accessible model for building research capacity, the CD2K initiative represents a step towards fostering data-driven discovery in global biomedical research, particularly in resource-limited settings.

This paper systematically discusses the application and development of federated learning in data privacy protection and data value sharing. With the rapid development of global information technology, especially the explosive growth of data from Internet of Things devices, data security and privacy protection are facing unprecedented challenges. This paper first analyzes the growth trend of global data volume and its importance to next generation technologies such as artificial intelligence technologies such as deep learning. Second, the paper provides an in-depth look at the impact of current data privacy regulations on data flows and value creation, particularly the EU's GDPR and China's Data Security and Personal Information Protection Law. Then, this paper introduces in detail federated learning, as a new distributed machine learning paradigm, which effectively solves the contradiction between existing data sharing and privacy protection by protecting individual data privacy and realizing global model collaborative construction. Finally, this paper discusses the combination of blockchain technology and federated learning, and proposes BeFL architecture as a new secure, decentralized and trusted federated learning system, which is expected to provide a comprehensive solution for large-scale data processing and value creation in multi-party scenarios. The research in this paper not only deepens the understanding of federation learning in theory, but also provides important reference and enlightenment for future research and application in related fields.

The concept of Research Integrity and research ethics are linked to the scientific research process and its communication. Presenting the results objectively is essential. It turns out that few scientists use manipulation of results and consequently other types of misconduct such as data Fabrication, Falsification, and Plagiarism (FFP). In this article, we show the definitions of these and different aspects of behavior that should be avoided, which affect principles of research reliability. We present, through a brief literature review, the concept of Research Integrity, FFP, and its relations with Publish or Perish. Editorial disputes are linked to the power that scientists have to remain in the field of research, governed by clear rules to increase their intellectual capital. We discussed that scientists tend to want their papers published in journals with better impact and well-evaluated, seeking prominence in the publishing sector. We have seen that both scientists and journals can have sequelae and problems in the face of the Publish or Perish movement, which can call into question the quality of the editorial process, peer review, and the journal itself.

The extent of access to energy of displaced populations in settlements and camps in Africa is largely 14 unknown. A multitude of contextual factors, such as the location and the characteristics of housing, 15 the legal status, the socio-cultural background, and the availability of humanitarian and public ser- 16 vices impact the living conditions and the needed energy services. Limitations in accessing energy 17 services have direct, multilayered, and far-reaching implications, including impacts on health, nu- 18 trition, education, protection, and livelihood. The objective of this article is to contribute to a more 19 comprehensive overview of the current state of energy access in displacement contexts on the Afri- 20 can continent by identifying and utilizing existing data. After a screening of the vast and various 21 available information, setting up of a database, consolidating the gathered data as well as assessing 22 the quality through a quality assessment method, the currently available information is visualized 23 and discussed. Considerable differences in the access to electricity for displaced persons across the 24 countries are found. For both electricity and clean cooking, the availability for displaced persons 25 ranges from nearly no access at all up to an access rate of 100%. More strikingly, the results also 26 show that besides South Africa and countries in the Maghreb region, the access to both clean cook- 27 ing and electricity for displaced persons is very low. At the same time, the fragmented data availa- 28 bility, the poor data quality, and the questionable expediency of available data allows neither solid 29 theoretical conclusions nor planning of effective practical implementation measures. Novel inter- 30 disciplinary research, conceptual frameworks and indicators are needed for the purpose of compa- 31 rability and consistency. Future research has the potential to more comprehensively capture the 32 current state of access to energy in displacements contexts and in a next step to examine how energy 33 is interwoven in the lives of displaced people to derive a set of more detailed context-sensitive en- 34 ergy indicators. It is essential that the concerned persons, the displaced persons themselves are in- 35 cluded in the research in a meaningful way.

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are integral to managing and optimizing processes in various industries, including manufacturing, power generation, and more. However, the scarcity of widely adopted ICS datasets hampers research efforts in areas like optimization and security. This scarcity arises due to the substantial cost and technical expertise required to create physical ICS environments. In response to these challenges, this paper presents a groundbreaking approach to generating synthetic ICS data through a data-driven ICS network simulation. We circumvent the need for expensive hardware by recreating the entire ICS environment in software. Moreover, rather than manually replicating the control logic of ICS components, we leverage existing data to autonomously generate control logic. The core of our method involves the stochastic setting of setpoints, which introduces randomness into the generated data. Setpoints serve as target values for controlling the operation of the ICS process. This approach enables us to augment existing ICS datasets and cater to the data requirements of machine learning-based ICS intrusion detection systems and other data-driven applications. Our simulated ICS environment employs virtualized containers to mimic the behavior of real-world PLCs and SCADA systems, while control logic is deduced from publicly available ICS datasets. Setpoints are generated probabilistically to ensure data diversity. Experimental results validate the fidelity of our synthetic data, emphasizing its ability to closely replicate temporal and statistical characteristics of real-world ICS networks. In conclusion, this innovative data-driven ICS network simulation offers a cost-effective and scalable solution for generating synthetic ICS data. It empowers researchers in the field of ICS optimization and security with diverse, realistic datasets, furthering advancements in this critical domain. Future work may involve refining the simulation model and exploring additional applications for synthetic ICS data.

The rapid development of digital multimedia has resulted in a massive storm of large-scale data. The data compression method reduces data size and lowers transmission costs. As a result, data-hiding research in the compression domain poses significant challenges to researchers. This paper proposes a highly imperceptible data-hiding scheme for a compressed image of Absolute Moment Block Truncation Coding (AMBTC). The combination theory is implemented to ensure the high imperceptibility of the modified compressed images. By only modifying one pixel in a block to embed secret bits, the experimental results show that the proposed method achieved high imperceptibility and high hiding capacity.

The monitoring of surface-water quality followed by water-quality modeling and analysis is essential for generating effective strategies in water-resource management. However, worldwide, particularly in developing countries, water-quality studies are limited due to the lack of a complete and reliable dataset of surface-water-quality variables. In this context, several statistical and machine-learning models were assessed for imputing water-quality data at six monitoring stations located in the Santa Lucía Chico river (Uruguay), a mixed lotic and lentic river system. The challenge of this study is represented by the high percentage of missing data (between 50% and 70%) and the high temporal and spatial variability that characterizes the water-quality variables. The competing algorithms implemented belonged to both univariate and multivariate imputation methods (inverse distance weighting (IDW), Random Forest Regressor (RFR), Ridge (R), Bayesian Ridge (BR), AdaBoost (AB), Hubber Regressor (HR), Support Vector Regressor (SVR), and K-nearest neighbors Regressor (KNNR)). According to the results, more than 76% of the imputation outcomes are considered satisfactory (NSE > 0.45). The imputation performance shows better results at the monitoring stations located inside the reservoir than the ones positioned along the mainstream. IDW was the most chosen model for data imputation.

This research proposed in this paper focuses on gathering evidence from devices with Windows 10 operating systems in order to discover and collect artifacts left by cloud storage applications that suggest their use even after the deletion of the Google client application. We show where and what type of data remnants can be found using our analysis which can be used as evidence in a digital forensic investigations.

In Data Science we are concerned with the integration of relevant sciences in observed and empirical contexts. This results in the unification of analytical methodologies, and of observed and empirical data contexts. Given the dynamic nature of convergence, described are the origins and many evolutions of the Data Science theme. The following are covered in this article: the rapidly growing post-graduate university course provisioning for Data Science; a preliminary study of employability requirements, and how past eminent work in the social sciences and other areas, certainly mathematics, can be of immediate and direct relevance and benefit for innovative methodology, and for facing and addressing the ethical aspect of Big Data analytics, relating to data aggregation and scale effects. Associated also with Data Science is how direct and indirect outcomes and consequences of Data Science include decision support and policy making, and both qualitative as well as quantitative outcomes. For such reasons, the importance is noted of how Data Science builds collaboratively on other domains, potentially with innovative methodologies and practice. Further sections point towards some of the most major current research issues.

The present grievous situation of the tuberculosis disease can be improved by efficient case management and timely follow-up evaluations. With the advent of digital technology this can be achieved by quick summarization of the patient-centric data. The aim of our study was to assess the effectiveness of the ODK Scan paper-to-digital system during testing period of three months. A sequential, explanatory mixed-method research approach was employed to elucidate technology use. Training, smartphones, application and 3G enabled SIMs were provided to the four field workers. At the beginning, baseline measures of the data management aspects were recorded and compared with endline measures to see the impact of ODK Scan. Additionally, at the end, users’ feedback was collected regarding app usability, user interface design and workflow changes. 122 patients’ records were retrieved from the server and analysed for quality. It was found that ODK Scan recognized 99.2% of multiple choice bubble responses and 79.4% of numerical digit responses correctly. However, the overall quality of the digital data was decreased in comparison to manually entered data. Using ODK Scan, a significant time reduction is observed in data aggregation and data transfer activities, however, data verification and form filling activities took more time. Interviews revealed that field workers saw value in using ODK Scan, however, they were more concerned about the time consuming aspects of the use of ODK Scan. Therefore, it is concluded that minimal disturbance in the existing workflow, continuous feedback and value additions are the important considerations for the implementing organization to ensure technology adoption and workflow improvements.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF)-based manufacturing is a growing area of research, with a particular focus on evaluating constraints in printed products. This research emphasises the importance of considering various factors—including mechanical properties and support structures—that influence the final product during the design phase. Specifically, the design of microchannel heat exchangers is highlighted, where all constraints are critical. This article will present a method for analysing channel pressure limitations and report findings about mechanical properties loss from examining tube porosity. This includes a summary of results and the establishment of an experimental device system.

This article affords the question of methane emissions in the context of the ESG framework at the global level. The World Bank ESG-Environmental, Social, and Governance database was used. The data refers to 193 countries for a period between 2011 and 2020. The econometric models used are Panel Data with Random Effects, Panel Data with Fixed Effects, Pooled Ordinary Least Squares-OLS, and Weighted Least Squares-WLS. The impact of methane on the ESG model was calculated through three equations capable of analyzing the impact of methane emissions, respectively, con-cerning the E-Environmental, S-Social, and G-Governance components of the ESG model. The re-sults show that methane emissions tend to increase even in the improvement of ESG conditions at world level.

Big Epidemiology is an innovative framework that extends the interdisciplinary approach of Big History to understand disease patterns, causes, and effects across human history on a global scale. This comprehensive methodology integrates epidemiology, genetics, environmental science, sociology, history, and data science to address contemporary and future public health challenges through a broad historical and societal lens. The foundational research agenda involves mapping the historical occurrence of diseases and their impacts on societies over time, utilizing archaeological findings, biological data, and historical records. By analyzing skeletal remains, ancient DNA, and artifacts, researchers can trace the origins and spread of diseases, such as Yersinia pestis in the Black Death. Historical documents, including chronicles and medical treatises, provide contextual narratives and quantitative data on past disease outbreaks, societal responses, and disruptions. Modern genetic studies reveal the evolution and migration patterns of pathogens and human adaptations to diseases, offering insights into co-evolutionary dynamics. This integrative approach allows for temporal and spatial mapping of disease patterns, linking them to social upheavals, population changes, and economic transformations. Big Epidemiology also examines the roles of environmental changes and socioeconomic factors in disease emergence and re-emergence, incorporating climate science, urban development, and economic history to inform public health strategies. The framework reviews historical and contemporary policy responses to pandemics, aiming to enhance future global health governance. By addressing ethical, legal, and social implications, Big Epidemiology seeks to ensure responsible and effective epidemiological research and interventions. This approach aims to profoundly impact how we understand, prevent, and respond to diseases, leveraging historical perspectives to enrich modern scientific inquiry and global public health strategies.

It is important to consider both requirements and limitations for the generation and sharing of genomic data. For example, human genomic sequence data should typically not be deposited publicly without the appropriate "explicit consent" to do so. This includes genetic identifying data that may exist within raw reads for bulk RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq) data and genomic data from cell lines that are available to purchase. At the same time, data sharing is important for re-analysis and reproducibility/replication in the scientific community. A review of known rules and guidelines for genomic data sharing is provided. This includes specific rules for NIH-funded data for controlled access deposit of HeLa cell line data, including bulk RNA-Seq data. The ability to create “partial” Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) public deposits with only processed data is described, with search criteria that can identify many “partial” GEO deposits for a variety of data types where reads were not made public for patient privacy concerns. However, it is the opinion of the author that this should be considered a short-term solution, and additional considerations and action should be carried out for genomic data generated in future experiments. Information about how to learn more about what is known for consent for cell line samples is also briefly provided, along with search results for genomic data from widely available cell lines that is deposited in controlled access databases. Finally, it should be made clear that this article presents some amount of opinion. Additionally, open feedback for this preprint is encouraged to further enhance knowledge and communication.

This paper reviews recent literature on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for remote sensing, aiming to provide a comprehensive analysis of the state-of-the-art practices, challenges, and future directions. It also tries to find out if current projects and initiatives involving the exploitation of satellite remote sensing are still framed in the SDI concepts.

Construction productivity entails a wide range of work combinations. When human resources are scarce, it is critical to replace manpower with machinery, and calculating machinery productivity is crucial. Traditional labor productivity methods, however, cannot address dredging complex multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) problems. Aiming to address the limitations of the traditional labor productivity method, this paper extends the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and proposes a new dredging productivity evaluation method. The proposed method can solve the problem of evaluating various combinations of factors (single-input, multiple-input, sin-gle-output, and multiple-output) and the problem suggesting that the efficiency of the DEA method'scalculation results is equal to 1. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified using reservoir dredging examples. The simulation results show that the proposed method has broad applicability, can accurately evaluate the related dredging performance issues, and provide directions for construction managers to improve labor productivity.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has showcased the implications of using virtual private networks (VPNs) as home-working is now common. Establishing the current state of knowledge on VPNs and their processes is vital. This corroborates an up to date understanding on the fundamentals of VPNs and their usage in today’s society; it informs on how to better use VPNs too. Insight into the security issues VPNs face and possible solutions to these allows for the identification of gaps for potential future research. Addressing these gaps would then indicate how to further improve VPNs, making sure VPNs are indeed beneficial to users.

Abstract: Our research analyzed the characteristics of phase IV clinical trials in oncology using data from the ClinicalTrials.gov registry. The included trials were conducted between January 2013 and December 2022 and were examined for key characteristics, including outcome measures, interventions, sample sizes, and study design, different cancer types, and geographic regions. Our analysis included 368 phase IV oncology studies. We found that 50% of these studies aimed to examine both safety and efficacy, while 43.5% only reported efficacy outcome measures, and 6.5% only described safety outcome measures. Only 16.9% of studies were powered to detect adverse events with a frequency of 1 in 100. Targeted therapies accounted for the majority of included studies (53.5%), with breast (32.91%) and hematological cancers (25.82%) being the most frequently investigated malignancies. Most phase IV oncology studies lacked sufficient power to detect rare adverse events due to their small sample sizes and instead focused on effectiveness. To ensure that there is no gap in drug safety data collection and detection of rare adverse events due to limited phase IV clinical trials, there is a significant need for additional education and participations by both health care providers and patients in spontaneous reporting processes.

The harrowing second wave of COVID-19 in India has led to much discussion over the quality and timeliness of reporting of deaths attributed to the pandemic. In this brief report, we aim to present the existing evidence, as well as the broader complexities surrounding the mortality burden of COVID-19 in India. This article sheds light on the following epidemiological issues: (1) general and India-specific challenges to COVID-19 death reporting, (2) latest COVID-19 mortality estimates in India as of May 16, 2021, (3) the apparent scale of uncaptured COVID-19 deaths, and (4) the role of disaggregated historic mortality trends in quantification of excess deaths attributed to COVID-19. We conclude with a set of high-level policy recommendations for improving the vital surveillance system and tracking of causes of death in India. We encourage direct efforts to integrate health data and indirect strategies for cross-validation of registered deaths. Such system-wide advances would drastically aid epidemiological research efforts and strengthen India’s position to overcome future public health crises.

Background. Predisposition to HIV+ is influenced by a wide range of correlated economic, environmental, demographic, social, and behavioral factors. While evidence among a candidate handful have strong evidence, there is lack of a consensus among the vast array of variables measured in large surveys. Methods. We performed a comprehensive data-driven search for correlates of HIV positivity in >600,000 participants of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) across 29 sub-Saharan African countries from 2003 to 2017. We associated a total of 7,251 and of 6,288 unique variables with HIV+ in females and males respectively in each of the 50 surveys. We performed a meta-analysis within countries to attain 29 country-specific associations. Results. We identified 344 (5.4% out possible) and 373 (5.1%) associations with HIV+ in males and females, respectively, with robust statistical support. The identified associations are consistent in directionality across countries and sexes. The association sizes among individual correlates and their predictive capability was low to modest, but comparable to established factors. Among the identified associations, variables identifying being head of household among females was identified in 17 countries with a mean odds ratio (OR) of 2.5 (OR range: 1.1-3.5, R² = 0.01). Other common associations were identified with marital status, education, age, and ownership of land or livestock. Conclusions. Our continent-wide search for variables has identified under-recognized variables associated with HIV+ that are consistent across the continent and sex. Many of the association sizes are as high as established risk factors for HIV+, including male circumcision.

Micro-combs [1-4] - optical frequency combs generated by integrated micro-cavity resonators – offer the full potential of their bulk counterparts [5,6], but in an integrated footprint. The discovery of temporal soliton states (DKS – dissipative Kerr solitons) [4,7-11] as a means of mode-locking micro-combs has enabled breakthroughs in many fields including spectroscopy [12,13], microwave photonics [14], frequency synthesis [15], optical ranging [16,17], quantum sources [18,19], metrology [20,21] and more. One of their most promising applications has been optical fibre communications where they have enabled massively parallel ultrahigh capacity multiplexed data transmission [22,23]. Here, by using a new and powerful class of micro-comb called “soliton crystals” [11], we achieve unprecedented data transmission over standard optical fibre using a single integrated chip source. We demonstrate a line rate of 44.2 Terabits per second (Tb/s) using the telecommunications C-band at 1550nm with a spectral efficiency – a critically important performance metric - of 10.4 bits/s/Hz. Soliton crystals exhibit robust and stable generation and operation as well as a high intrinsic efficiency that, together with a low soliton micro-comb spacing of 48.9 GHz enable the use of a very high coherent data modulation format of 64 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulated). We demonstrate error free transmission over 75 km of standard optical fibre in the laboratory as well as in a field trial over an installed metropolitan optical fibre network. These experiments were greatly aided by the ability of the soliton crystals to operate without stabilization or feedback control. This work demonstrates the capability of optical soliton crystal micro-combs to perform in demanding and practical optical communications networks.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has been a widely-used technology in biomedical research for understanding the role of molecular genetics of cells in health and disease. A variety of computational tools have been developed to analyse the vastly growing NGS data, which often require bioinformatics skills, tedious work and significant amount of time. To facilitate data processing steps minding the gap between biologists and bioinformaticians, we developed CSI NGS Portal, an online platform which gathers established bioinformatics pipelines to provide fully automated NGS data analysis and sharing in a user-friendly website. The portal currently provides 16 standard pipelines for analysing data from DNA, RNA, smallRNA, ChIP, RIP, 4C, SHAPE, circRNA, eCLIP, Bisulfite and scRNA sequencing, and is flexible to expand with new pipelines. The users can upload raw data in fastq format and submit jobs in a few clicks, and the results will be self-accessible via the portal to view/download/share in real-time. The output can be readily used as the final report or as input for other tools depending on the pipeline. Overall, CSI NGS Portal helps researchers rapidly analyse their NGS data and share results with colleagues without the aid of a bioinformatician. This study attempts to assess the impact of corruption on economic growth in the Mediterranean countries, during the period from 1998 to 2007. Econometric analysis using panel regression has been adopted to test this effect. Individual effects models such as random effects model and fixed effects model were applied to the study sample of 160 observations, and to choose the suitable model, we implemented several tests. For our analysis, we used a basic model that includes the dependent variable GDP per capita as a factor of economic growth and the corruption perception index as the independent variable concerned. Then we completed the model with several standardized macroeconomic control variables mentioned above and applied the individual effects models. The outcomes illustrate that corruption has a negative impact on the selected Mediterranean countries’ economic growth.

The production of olives and olive oil in the Mediterranean region is one of the most important cultivation. The continuous changes of the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) towards strengthening the influence of market forces, has increased the necessity for assessing the efficiency of production protocols or patterns being implemented by the farmers. The case of olive trees cultivation, despite the fact that it is very important for both farmers and consumers, has not been in depth analyzed regarding the efficiency of inputs being used during the production process. This study evaluates the efficiency rates of 100 agricultural holding specialized on olive trees cultivation in Greece, by implementing a DEA input oriented model. The inputs being used are land, fertilizers, agrochemicals, labour, and energy. The output being used is the revenue of each holding. The results quantify the significant differentiation of efficiency scores, providing evidence that there is space for restructuring the production process, in order to improve efficiency and decrease by this way the production cost of inefficient farmers.

In era of ever-expanding data and knowledge, we lack a centralized system that maps all the faculties to their research works. This problem has not been addressed in the past and it becomes challenging for students to connect with the right faculty of their domain. Since we have so many colleges and faculties this lies in the category of big data problem. In this paper, we present a model which works on the distributed computing environment to tackle big data. The proposed model uses apache spark as an execution engine and hive as database. The results are visualized with the help of Tableau that is connected to Apache Hive to achieve distributed computing.

The work presented in this paper makes multiple scientific contributions with a specific focus on the analysis of misinformation about COVID-19 on YouTube. First, the results of topic modeling performed on the video descriptions of YouTube videos containing misinformation about COVID-19 revealed four distinct themes or focus areas - Promotion and Outreach Efforts, Treatment for COVID-19, Conspiracy Theories regarding COVID-19, and COVID-19 and Politics. Second, the results of topic-specific sentiment analysis revealed the sentiment associated with each of these themes. For the videos belonging to the theme of Promotion and Outreach Efforts, 45.8% were neutral, 39.8% were positive, and 14.4% were negative, for the videos belonging to the theme of Treatment for COVID-19, 38.113% were positive, 31.343% were neutral, and 30.544% were negative, for the videos belonging to the theme of Conspiracy Theories regarding COVID-19, 46.9% were positive, 31.0% were neutral, and 22.1% were negative, and for the videos belonging to the theme of COVID-19 and Politics, 35.70% were positive, 32.86% were negative, and 31.44% were negative. Third, topic-specific language analysis was performed to detect the various languages in which the video descriptions per topic were published on YouTube. This analysis revealed multiple novel insights. For instance, for all the themes, English and Spanish were the most widely used and second-most widely used languages, respectively. Fourth, the patterns of sharing these videos on other social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter were also investigated. The results revealed that videos containing video descriptions in English were shared the highest number of times on Facebook and Twitter. Finally, correlation analysis was performed by taking into account multiple characteristics of these videos. The results revealed that the correlation between the length of the video title and the number of Tweets as well as the correlation between the length of the video title and the number of Facebook posts was statistically significant.

This paper introduces a novel ensemble adjustment Kalman filter (EAKF) that integrates a machine-learning approach. The approach employs nonlinear variable relationships established by a deep neural network (DNN) during the analysis stage of the EAKF. This process nonlinearly projects observation increments into the state variable space. The newly developed DNN-EAKF algorithm can be applied to coupled data assimilation using coupled ocean-atmosphere models. It enhances cross-component updates in strongly coupled data assimilation (SCDA) by diminishing errors in estimating cross-component error covariance arising from insufficient ensemble members, thereby improving the SCDA analysis. This paper employs a conceptual model to conduct twin experiments, validating the DNN-EAKF’s capability to utilize cross-component observation information in SCDA effectively. The approach is anticipated to offer insights for future methodological integrations of machine learning and data assimilation and provide methods for SCDA applications in coupled general circulation models.

This paper focuses on a joint model to analyse longitudinal proportion and survival data. After transforming the longitudinal proportional data by a logit function, we adopt a partially linear mixed-effect model for it, in which nonlinear function of time is fitted via using B-splines technique and a centered Dirichlet Process Mixture Model (CDPMM) is specified for a general distribution of random effects. The survival data is assumed to a Cox proportional hazard model, the sharing random effects joint model is developed for the two types of data. Combining the Gibbs sampler and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, we propose a Bayesian Lasso (BLasso) method to simultaneously estimate unknown parameters and select important covariates. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed methods. An example from the MA.5 research experiment is used to illustrate the proposed methodologies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) models are expected to have a great impact in the manufacturing industry, optimizing time and resource cost by enabling applications such as predictive maintenance (PM) of production machines. A necessary condition for this is the availability of high quality data collected as close as possible to the process in question. With the advent of 5G equipped multi sensor platforms (MSPs), high sampling rate data can be collected and transmitted for processing in real time. This poses a data security challenge, since this data may give valuable insight into confidential business information of companies. Federated learning (FL) enables the training of AI models with data from multiple sources without it leaving the shop floor, by utilizing distributed computing resources available on premise. This paper introduces an architecture of FL based on data collected from 5G MSPs for enabling PM in industrial environments and discusses its potential benefits and challenges.

The study is based on the notion that big data predictive analytics is important for developing strategic alliances performance of companies. this study investigates the relationship between big data predictive analytics, big data culture, and competitive strategies 'techniques were adopted, such as descriptive statistics, correlation,regression, etc. using SPSS and SmartPLS statistical software. Hypotheses were tested with bootstrapped analysis using SEM (through SmartPLS). The study developed a structural equation model by using the SEM analysis. The results of the SEM analysis suggested the hypothesized model of the study was valid. The results supported all the hypotheses of the study.Through empirical analysis, demonstrated the conclusion is that the big data predictive analytics has a positive and significant relationship with strategic alliance performance

During the night between 9 and 10 September 2017, multiple flash floods associated to a heavy-precipitation event affected the town of Livorno, located in Tuscany, Italy. Accumulated precipitation exceeding 200 mm in two hours, associated with a return period higher than 200 years, caused all the largest streams of the Livorno municipality to flood several areas of the town. We used the limited-area Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, in a convection-permitting setup, to reconstruct the extreme event leading to the flash floods. We evaluated possible forecasting improvements emerging from the assimilation of local ground stations and X- and S-band radar data into the WRF, using the configuration operational at the meteorological center of Tuscany region (LaMMA) at the time of the event. Simulations were verified against weather station observations, through an innovative method aimed at disentangling the positioning and intensity errors of precipitation forecasts. By providing more accurate descriptions of the low-level flow and a better assessment of the atmospheric water vapour, the results demonstrate that assimilating radar data improved the quantitative precipitation forecasts.

1) Background: The use of linked data in Semantic Web are promising approaches to add value to nutrition research. An ontology, which defines the logical relationships between well-defined taxonomic terms, enables linking and harmonizing research output. To enable the description of domain-specific output in nutritional epidemiology, we propose the Ontology for Nutritional Epidemiology (ONE) according to authoritative guidance for nutritional epidemiologic research; 2) Methods: First, a scoping review was conducted to identify existing ontology terms for reuse in ONE. Second, existing data standards and manuscript reporting guidelines for nutritional epidemiology were converted into ontology, and the terms used in the standards were summarized and listed separately in a taxonomic hierarchy. Third, the ontologies of the nutritional epidemiologic standards, reporting guidelines and the core concepts were gathered in ONE. Three case studies were illustrated for its potential applications. (i) annotation of existing manuscripts and data, (ii) ontology-based inference, and (iii) estimation of reporting completeness in a sample of nine manuscripts; 3) Results: Ontologies for “food and nutrition” (n=33), “disease and special population” (n=86), “data description” (n=21), “research description” (n=32) and “supplementary (meta) data description” (n=44) were reviewed and listed. ONE consists of 339 classes (79 new classes to describe nutrition data and 24 new classes to describe the content of nutrition manuscripts). The case studies demonstrated the application of ONE. 4) Conclusion: ONE is a resource to automate data integration, searching and browsing, and can be used to assess reporting completeness in nutritional epidemiology.

Using Internet of Things (IoT) applications has been a growing trend in the last few years. They have been deployed in several areas of life including secure and sensitive sectors like military and health. In these sectors, sensory data is the main factor in any decision-making process. This introduces the need to ensure the integrity of data. Secure techniques are needed to detect any data injection attempt before catastrophic effects happen. Sensors have limited computational and power resources. This limitation creates a challenge to design a security mechanism that is both secure and energy-efficient. This work presents a Randomized Watermarking Filtering Scheme (RWFS) for IoT applications that provides en-route filtering to get rid of any injected data at an early stage of the communication. Filtering injected data is based on a watermark that is generated from the original data and embedded directly in random places throughout the packet's payload. The scheme uses homomorphic encryption techniques to conceal the report's measurement from any adversary. The advantage of homomorphic encryption is that it allows the data to be aggregated and, thus, decreases the packet's size. The results of our proposed scheme proved that it improves the security and energy consumption of the system as it mitigates some of the limitations in the existing works.

In networked driving simulation, two or more human drivers participate interactively within a shared virtual environment. Thereby, typical applications of driving simulation can be extended to consider multi-driver scenarios, where a much closer approximation of reality with its unpredictability is achieved. However, the utilized network is typically prone to a considerable amount of message traffic. In addition to restricted system scalability, the resulting degradation of network performance leads to invalid simulation outcomes or unacceptable system behavior. High-level architecture (HLA) is an IEEE standard for networked simulation. Data distribution management (DDM) is one of the service groups provided by HLA standard. The aim of the DDM service is to reduce network traffic and to save effort required to process unnecessary received data. However, different approaches for current DDM implementations show major drawbacks in terms of utilization complexity, inefficiency, and yet added network overhead. This paper presents a concept of an interest manager that takes over the DDM functionality and avoids these drawbacks. Simulation data is exchanged between the participating driving simulators only when it is necessary according to the driving situations. The concept is validated by analyzing the network load of two driving maneuvers with and without the interest manager.

Digital federated platforms and data cooperatives for secure, trusted and sovereign data exchange will play a central role in the construction industry of the future. With the help of platforms, cooperatives and their novel value creation, the digital transformation and the degree of organization of the construction value chain can be taken to a new level of collaboration. The goal of this research project was to develop an experimental prototype for a federated innovation data platform along with a suitable exemplary use case. The prototype is to serve the construction industry as a demonstrator for further developments and form the basis for an innovation platform. It exemplifies how an overall concept is concretely implemented along one or more use cases that address high-priority industry pain points. This concept will create a blueprint and a framework for further developments, which will then be further established in the market. The research project illuminates the perspective of various governance innovations to increase industry collaboration, productivity and capital project performance and transparency as well as the overall potential of possible platform business models. However, a comprehensive expert survey revealed that there are considerable obstacles to trust-based data exchange between the key stakeholders in the industry value network. The obstacles to cooperation are predominantly not of a technical nature, but of a competitive, predominantly trust-related nature. To overcome these obstacles and create a pre-competitive space of trust, the authors therefore propose the governance structure of a data cooperative model, which is discussed in detail in this paper.

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our lives in the last two decades, leaving a digital trace of our activities and communication. This study aims to develop a data processing framework to evaluate human mobility and socioeconomic status based on call detail records. The methodology proposed first calculates radius of gyration and entropy for each user, then estimates the socioeconomic status by the price and age of the subscribers' phones. Finally, an unsupervised machine learning algorithm was used to group the cells into clusters based on their mobility and socioeconomic metrics. The research showed differences between Buda and Pest during a large scale social event using mobile phone ages and prices. Additionally, the clustering results revealed homogenous groups of cells around Budapest, with similar mobility and socioeconomic metrics. The main conclusion is that mobile network data combined with mobile phone properties offer a useful tool for characterising urban mobility and socioeconomic status.

This paper presents a hybrid probability distribution known as the FCD, which is based on the hazard functions of the Fréchet and Chen distributions. A notable characteristic of the FCD is its ability to model monotonic (increasing and decreasing) and non-monotonic (bathtub-shaped) behaviors, commonly linked to electrical and electronic device failure times in reliability analysis. The paper explores the statistical properties relevant to the reliability analysis of these devices. It proposes a Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) and Bayesian Analysis equations for estimating the parameters of the FCD. Three case studies of electronic device lifetimes with varying behaviors were analyzed to validate the proposed methodology. The FCD was compared to other distributions with similar characteristics, and the results from each case study demonstrated that the proposed distribution yields competitive outcomes, closely reflecting the behavior of the devices analyzed, making it a valuable option for reliability engineering practitioners in warranty and maintenance time evaluations

Additionally, it examines the improvements in customer service through real-time support, sentiment analysis, and predictive assistance, which collectively contribute to a more responsive and customer-centric approach. The research also addresses how big data analytics optimizes operational efficiency by streamlining workflows, improving resource allocation, and reducing costs, thus enhancing overall organizational performance. Strategic decision-making benefits from data-driven insights into market trends, pricing strategies, and competitive positioning, allowing organizations to adapt and thrive in a competitive environment. However, the study also acknowledges the challenges associated with data quality, privacy, and investment, emphasizing the need for robust measures to address these issues. Furthermore, the integration of big data with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain presents new opportunities and complexities in enhancing customer experience. Overall, this research underscores the transformative potential of big data analytics while highlighting the importance of addressing its associated challenges to fully capitalize on its benefits.

The rapid urbanization in China has significantly contributed to the vast expansion of urban built-up areas. Precisely extracting and monitoring these areas is crucial for understanding and optimizing the developmental process and spatial attributes of smart, compact cities. However, most existing studies tend to focus narrowly on a single city or global scale with a single dimension, often ignoring mesoscale analysis across multiple urban agglomerations. In contrast, our study employs GIS and image processing techniques to integrate multi-source data for the identification of built-up areas. We specifically compare and analyze two representative urban agglomerations in China: the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in the east and the Chengdu-Chongqing (CC) region in the west. We use different methods to extract built-up areas from socio-economic factors, natural surfaces, and traffic network dimensions. Additionally, we utilize a high-precision built-up area dataset of China as a reference for verification and comparison. Our findings reveal several significant insights: (1) The multi-source data fusion approach effectively enhances the extraction of built-up areas within urban agglomerations, achieving higher accuracy than previously employed methods. (2) Our research methodology performs particularly well in the CC urban agglomeration. The average precision rate in CC is 96.03%, while the average precision rate in YRD is lower at 80.33%. This study provides an objective and accurate assessment of distribution characteristics and internal spatial structure of built-up areas within urban agglomerations. This method offers a new perspective for identifying and monitoring built-up areas in Chinese urban agglomerations.

The ongoing expansion in volume, velocity and variety of geospatial data has stimulated the development of artificial intelligence applications and associated online cartographic visualizations. In this context, the cartographic communication through peer-reviewed media evolved to incorporate Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Re-usability (FAIR) principles. In this paper, we review the functionalities proposed by current international peer-reviewed media for accessing, exploring and re-using geospatial data, and situate them on a diagram conceived for peer-reviewed cartography in the artificial intelligence era. We then present an overview of the cartographic infrastructure and workflow currently available in the Terra Digitalis journal for the online publication of massive spatiotemporal data. This free and opensource based solution allows a smooth integration, from data submission to final peer reviewed publication, of dynamic, interactive 2D and 3D maps. As a proof of concept, we present two maps derived from massive spatiotemporal data, related, respectively, to a climate numerical model (raster data) and a bike sharing system’s origin-destination dataset (vector data). We argue that the combination of technologies used in the journal provides an efficient and low-cost solution, unmatched by other publication media, to boost the accessibility and FAIR principles for geospatial big data.

At the beginning of 2019, the petroleum crisis impacted many economies dependent on this industry. The Mexican government started programs to identify points and government officials involved in the gasoline stealing from PEMEX (Petróleos Mexicanos), the country’s leading government petroleum company. The programs consisted of supervising and monitoring the Mexican country network of gasoline ducts to detect points where gasoline was being stolen. Consequently, large urban regions faced a lack and shortage of gasoline. This situation generated several reactions in social media and many open data in news media. Although the government provided open data about stealing gasoline locations related to crimes, it did not analyze the collected data to identify patterns, insights, and the spatio-temporal characterization of this phenomenon. This paper presents a study to deal with the regional semantics described in the social media locations of gasoline stealing. Thus, a framework to discover the trends that emerge from social media and how it is correlated with the government’s open data is also presented—the proposed methodology used machine learning techniques based on linguistic and semantic technologies. The analysis was applied to a dataset of 24,317 geo-referenced tweets. The obtained results reflected the Mexican thinking opinion regarding discovered social topics, polarization maps, and regional insights. According to discovered trends, there were long fuel lines between 1.5 and 5 kilometers (on average) at fuel stations in different Mexican states.

This work analyzes a new indoor laboratory data set looking at early fire indicators in controlled and realistic experiments representing different incipient fire scenarios. The experiments were performed within the confines of an indoor laboratory setting using multiple distributed sensor nodes on different room positions. Each sensor node collected data of particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOC), CO, CO2, H2, UV, air temperature and humidity in terms of a multivariate time series. These data hold immense value for researchers within the machine learning and data science communities who are keen on exploring innovative advanced statistical and machine learning techniques. They serve as a valuable resource for the development of early fire detection systems. The analysis of the collected data was carried out in dependence of the manhattan distance between the fire source and the sensor node. We found that especially larger particles (&gt; 0.5 μm) and VOCs show a significant dependency with respect to the intensity as a function of the manhattan distance to the source. Moreover, we observed differences in the propagation behavior of VOCs, PM, and CO, which are particularly relevant in incipient fire scenarios due to the presence of strand popagation effects.

Semantic interoperability facilitates exchange and access of health data that is being documented in EHRs with various semantic features. In the EU, the regulation proposal of European health data space requires development of semantic interoperability. To achieve a fully integrated EHDS ecosystem leveraging the value of health data, stakeholders need to overcome challenges of implementing common standards and other semantic interoperability features. We aimed to research what scientific evidence is available on developing semantic interoperability. Our research questions focused specifically on key features and approaches for semantic interoperability and on possible benefits of these choices. For that purpose, we performed a systematic literature review by defining our study framework based on previous research. Our results consisted of 10 studies where data models, ontologies, terminologies, classifications, and standards were applied for building interoperability. Through increased access to interoperable patient information, a better quality and outcomes in care can be achieved. Better communication based on easily accessible data is facilitated between health professionals and between clinicians and the patients. When heading towards semantic harmonization as outlined in the EHDS proposal, more experiences and analyses are needed to assess how applicable the chosen solutions are for semantic interoperability of European health care data.

The current availability of electronic health records represents an excellent research opportunity on multimorbidity, one of the most relevant public health problems nowadays. However, it also poses a methodological challenge due to the current lack of tools to access, harmonize and reuse research datasets. In FAIR4Health, a European Horizon 2020 project, a workflow to implement the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) principles on health datasets was developed, as well as two tools aimed at facilitating the transformation of raw datasets into FAIR ones and the preservation of data privacy. As part of this project, we conducted a multicentric retrospective observational study to apply the aforementioned FAIR implementation workflow and tools to five European health datasets for research on multimorbidity. We applied a federated frequent pattern growth association algorithm to identify the most frequent combinations of chronic diseases and their association with mortality risk. We identified several multimorbidity patterns clinically plausible and consistent with the bibliography, some of which were strongly associated with mortality. Our results show the usefulness of the solution developed in FAIR4Health to overcome the difficulties in data management and highlight the importance of implementing a FAIR data policy to accelerate responsible health research.

Advances in DNA sequencing technology are facilitating genomic analyses of unprecedented scope and scale, widening the gap between our abilities to generate and fully exploit biological sequence data. Comparable analytical challenges are encountered in other data-intensive fields involving sequential data, such as signal processing, in which dimensionality reduction (i.e., compression) methods are routinely used to lessen the computational burden of analyses. In this work we explore the application of dimensionality reduction methods to numerically represent high-throughput sequence data for three important biological applications of virus sequence data: reference-based mapping, short sequence classification and de novo assembly. Despite using highly compressed sequence transformations to accelerate the processes, our sequence processing approach yielded comparable accuracy to existing approaches, and are ideally suited for sequences originating from highly diverse virus populations. We demonstrate the application of our methodology to both synthetic and real viral pathogen sequence data. Our results show that the use of highly compressed sequence approximations can provide accurate results and that useful analytical performance can be retained and even enhanced through appropriate dimensionality reduction of sequence data.

This qualitative research explores Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) within the context of subscription-based e-commerce models. Through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the study investigates key elements such as trust, collaboration, technology integration, sustainability, risk management, cultural alignment, innovation, cost management, globalization, supplier selection, and performance measurement. Findings reveal that trust is foundational in fostering reliable interactions and open communication between e-commerce businesses and suppliers. Collaboration emerges as crucial for innovation and operational efficiency, facilitating co-development and shared risk management. Technology integration, including AI and blockchain, enhances supply chain visibility and decision-making capabilities. Sustainability considerations drive businesses to engage with suppliers adhering to environmental standards, enhancing brand reputation and consumer loyalty. Effective risk management strategies mitigate disruptions and ensure supply chain resilience. Cultural alignment fosters harmonious partnerships and mutual understanding across diverse global markets. Innovation through supplier collaboration drives product development and market responsiveness. Cost management practices optimize operational efficiency and strategic supplier relationships. Globalization necessitates adaptive strategies to manage diverse cultural and regulatory landscapes. Strategic supplier selection and continuous performance measurement drive ongoing improvement and alignment with business objectives. This study contributes empirical insights and practical implications for enhancing SRM in subscription-based e-commerce, informing strategies to navigate challenges and leverage opportunities in a competitive marketplace.

The accumulation of space debris, including defunct satellites, rocket stages, and fragments, poses a severe threat to current and future space operations. Addressing this issue requires innovative approaches for active debris removal. This paper presents a new method for detumbling and deorbiting large, non-cooperative tumbling debris, such as those from Russian 'Kosmos 3M' launchers. We propose a detumbling device combining three harpoons with a nanosatellite, which attaches to debris and uses thrusters to reduce its angular velocity, facilitating subsequent removal. A high-fidelity coupled dynamics model of the system is developed to account for external disturbances and inertial changes due to fuel consumption. Additionally, an adaptive sliding mode control strategy with pulse-width pulse-frequency (PWPF) modulation is proposed to manage uncertainties and disturbances during the detumbling process. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method, achieving successful detumbling within 4000 seconds.

Recent advancements in semantic communication (SC) have shown the potential to surpass the limitations of the Shannon theorem, by leveraging an understanding of the meaning of data instead of the data itself. In networks, data-aided sensing (DAS) presents a powerful tool that can significantly reduce communication overhead, aligning perfectly with the goals of SC by providing more powerful semantic messages. This survey explores the synergy between DAS and SC and investigates how their convergence can lead to more efficient and effective communication.

Student attrition poses significant societal and economic challenges, leading to unemployment, lower earnings, and other adverse outcomes for individuals and communities. To address this, predictive systems leveraging machine learning and Big Data aim to identify at-risk students early and intervene effectively. This project focuses on extracting key parameters from past dropout data to construct a predictive model and alert authorities to intervene promptly. Two preliminary trials refine machine learning models, establish evaluation standards, and optimize hyperparameters. These trials facilitate systematic exploration of model performance and data quality assessment. Achieving 100% accuracy in dropout prediction, the study identifies academic performance as the primary influencer, with early-year subjects like Mechanics and Materials, Design of Machine Elements, and Instrumentation and Control having significant impact. The longitudinal effect of these subjects on attrition underscores the importance of early intervention. Proposed solutions include early engagement and support or restructuring courses to better accommodate novice learners, aiming to reduce attrition rates.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization and continues as one of the world’s top ten causes of death. TB diagnosis is more critical in developing countries where demanded infrastructure for detection, and treatment complicates the efforts against the disease. These aspects related to limited resources are significant, especially in areas away from the main cities, with few mechanisms to make a timely diagnosis that contributes to successfully addressing the possible patients. Artificial intelligence has begun to be essential in providing additional strategies in the diagnosis processes for health professionals’ support. This paper uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques to create models that can supply TB diagnosis when the needed infrastructure is unavailable. Two different sources were explored: text extracted from electronic medical records (EMR) and patient clinical data (CD). Four proposals using five different machine learning models were implemented. The first two models employed ML and each data source independently. Then, two additional approaches developed a data fusion from both sources. This strategy’s employment was analyzed with physicians according to their pertinence in the process and understanding of the EMR. Finally, the results of the data fusion were compared to each source, obtaining better performance at using only the CD, where an area under the ROC curve of 69.9±2.3% was obtained. However, the advantage of analyzing physician’s reports is the availability of this information contrasted to clinical-specific data, which can be more useful in places far from the main cities without enough basic structure for its obtaining.

Design plays a critical role and creates a positive user experience, establishing a solid brand identity and staying competitive in the digital world. This research investigates the impact of user data collecting and analysis in improving user experience. The Data-driven User interface design can create an optimized and relevant UI with individual preferences, which leads to increasing user engagement and usability. The proposal explores methodologies to implement data collection and user research for tailoring digital products.

In this short communication, a concept has been presented to model geographical data to predict future temperature of Tabuk, region. Machine learning has been applied to the weather station data to develop a prediction model. The preliminary results are promising and encouraging and are envisaging to further this research towards the determination of unknown temperature rise in the region. This is important to mention here, that the problem has been formulated as a Regression problem, NOT as a classification problem. Hence, applying Convolutional neural networks is not possible, due to the non-existence of classes or converting the temperature values to classes does not make any sense. Hence, this is defined as a regression problem which achieved encouraging desirable results.
