The metaverse is gradually expanding. There is a growing number of photo and video recordings of metaverse virtual worlds being used in multiple domains, with growing collections. An essential element of the metaverse and its recordings are avatars. In this paper, we present a novel task of avatar detection in metaverse recordings, supporting semantic retrieval in collections of metaverse recordings and other use cases. Our work addresses the characterizations and definitions of avatars and presents a new model supporting avatar detection. The latest object detection algorithms are trained and tested on a variety of avatar types in metaverse recordings. Our work achieves a higher level of accuracy than existing models, which encourages further research in this field.

Procedural and reporting guidelines frame the process of scientific practices and communications among researchers and the community at large. In the pursuit of fostering reproducibility, several methodological frameworks have been proposed by several initiatives. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate that data leakage and reproducibility are still prominent challenges. Recent studies have shown the transforming potential of incorporating the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles in the work-flow of different context such as software and machine learning model development stages to cultivate open science. In this work, we introduce a framework to calibrate reporting guidelines against the FAIR principles in order to foster reproducibility and open science. We adapted the “Best fit” framework synthesis approach to develop the calibration framework. We propose a series of defined workflows to calibrate reporting guidelines with FAIR principles and a use case to demonstrate the process. By integrating FAIR principles with established reporting guidelines, the proposed framework bridges the gap in accommodating both FAIR metrics and reporting guidelines and benefits from advantages of these major integrated components.

The use of artificial intelligence algorithms (AI) has gained importance for dental applications in recent years. Analyzing using IA information from different sensor data such as images or X-ray radiographs can help to improve medical decisions and to achieve early diagnosis of different dental pathologies. In particular, the use of deep learning (DL) techniques based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has obtained promising results in dental applications based on images, in which approaches based on classification, detection, and segmentation are being studied with growing interest. However, there are still several challenges to be tackled, such as the data quality and quantity, the variability among categories, and the analysis of the possible bias and variance associated with each dataset distribution. In this work, we compare three different DL object detection models, which are Faster R-CNN, YOLO V2, and SSD. Each object detection architecture was trained, calibrated, validated, and tested with three different feature extraction CNNs which are ResNet-18, ResNet-50, and ResNet-101, which were the networks that best fit our dataset distribution. Based on such detection networks, we detect four different categories of angles in third molars using X-ray panoramic radiographs by using Winter's classification criterion. This criterion characterizes the third molar's position regarding the second molar's longitudinal axis. The detected categories for the third molars are distoangular, vertical, mesioangular, and horizontal. For training, we used a total of 644 panoramic X-ray images. The results obtained in the testing dataset reached up to 99% mean average accuracy performance, demonstrating the YOLOV2 obtained higher effectiveness in solving the third molar angle detection problem. These results demonstrate that the use of CNNs for object detection in panoramic X-rays represents a promising solution in dental applications.

The National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is used worldwide to classify stroke severity as ‘mild’, ‘moderate’ or ‘severe’ based on neurological impairment. Yet stroke survivors argue that the classification of ‘mild’ does not represent the holistic experience and impact of stroke on their daily lives. In this observational cohort study, we aimed to identify different types of impairment among stroke survivors classified as mild. We used mild stroke survivors’ data from the START longitudinal stroke cohort (n=73) with measures related to sensorimotor, cognition, depression, functional disability, physical activity, work and social adjustment over 12 months. Given the multi-source, multi-granular and unlabelled nature of data, we utilised a structure-adapting, unsupervised machine learning approach, the Growing Self-organising Map (GSOM) algorithm to generate distinct clinical profiles. These diverse impairment profiles revealed that mild stroke survivors experience varying degrees of impairment and impact (cognitive, depression, physical activity, work/social adjustment) at different time points, despite the uniformity implied by their NIHSS-classified ‘mild’ stroke. This emphasises the necessity of creating a holistic and comprehensive representation of mild stroke survivors’ needs over the first-year post-stroke to improve rehabilitation and post-stroke care.

The early beginnings from the 1960s to the 1980s laid the groundwork for modern cybersecurity, with the development of ARPANET, TCP/IP, public-key cryptography, and the first antivirus programs. The 1990s marked a transformative era, driven by the commercialization of the Internet and the emergence of web-based services. As the Internet grew, so did the range and sophistication of cyber threats, leading to advancements in security technologies such as the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, password protection, and firewalls. Current practices in website information security involve a multi-layered approach, including encryption, secure coding practices, regular security audits, and user education. The future of website information security is expected to be shaped by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and quantum computing, as well as the increasing importance of international cooperation and standardization efforts. As cyber threats continue to evolve, ongoing research and innovation in website information security will be essential to protect sensitive information and maintain trust in the digital world.

Objective: With just ten questions, the Berlin questionnaire (BQ) stands out as one of the simplest and most widely implemented non-invasive screening tools for detecting subjects at high risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a still underdiagnosed syndrome characterized by partial or complete obstruction of the upper airways during sleep. The main aim of this study was to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the BQ through Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Methods: A ML classifier (hereafter, ML-10) was trained using the ten questions of the standard BQ. A simplified variant of the BQ, BQ-2, which comprises only two questions out of the total of ten, was also assessed in a ML context. A 10-fold cross validation scheme was used. Ground truth was provided by the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) measured by Home Sleep Apnea Testing. Model performance was determined comparing ML-10 and BQ-2 with the standard BQ by the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC), Area Under the Curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Results: ML-10 demonstrated superior performance in predicting the risk for OSA compared to the standard BQ and was also capable in classifying OSA with two different AHI thresholds (AHI>=15, AHI>=30), typically used in clinical practice. Remarkably, BQ-2 was also better in sensibility to assess moderate to severe OSA (AHI≥ 15) compared to the ML-10. Conclusions: The study underscores the importance of integrating ML techniques for early OSA detection, suggesting a direction for future research to improve diagnostic processes and patient outcomes in sleep medicine.

Methotrexate is an antimetabolic agent with proliferative and immunosuppressive activity. It has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children. However, there is evidence of an association between methotrexate and toxicity risks, which influences the personalization of treatment, particularly in the case of childhood ALL. This article presents the development and implementation of an algorithm based on artificial neural networks to detect methotrexate toxicity in pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The algorithm utilizes historical clinical and laboratory data, with an effectiveness of 99% in the tests performed with the patients dataset. The use of neural networks in medicine is often linked to disease diagnosis systems. However, neural networks are not only capable of recognizing examples, but also hold very important information. For this reason, one of the main areas of application of neural networks is the interpretation of medical data. In this article we diagnose with the application of neural networks in medicine with a concrete example: Detecting Methotrexate in Pediatric Patient in its early stages.

Chili peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) are economically important crop worldwide. Pepper yellow leaf cure Thailand virus (PepYLCTHV), a Begomovirus causing yellow leaf mosaic disease of chili pepper has been reported to damage 95% economic loss under favorable epidemic conditions. Thirty-one chili genotypes were screened for resistance to PepYLCTHV disease through challenge inoculation using 10-15 viruliferous whiteflies per plant. We purified two resistant lines (PEP6 and PEP12) through four generations of selfing and selection through challenged inoculations. At the 28 days after inoculations two chili genotypes showed symptoms less based on disease severity and percentage of disease incidence of 30 plants PEP6 showed a disease severity 3.64 with 69.33 % DI and PEP12 showed a disease severity 3.83 with 77.67 % DI. PEP6 and PEP12 were selected for pure-line development for four cycles.Both varieties showed an increase in percentage of the resistant plant 12.78 % and 16.77 %, respectively. These lines have potential for release as resistant lines for improvement chili pepper resistance to PepYLCTHV and for developing maker associated with the resistant trait.

Background: Fingertip injuries with volar pulp tissue defects are challenging to manage due to the complex anatomy and critical role of the fingertip in sensory and motor functions. Traditional surgical approaches are associated with donor site morbidity, prolonged immobilization, and suboptimal functional outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a conservative treatment protocol using artificial dermis and semi-occlusive dressing for these injuries. Methods: A single-center, prospective study was conducted on 31 patients with fingertip injuries involving volar pulp defects. The treatment protocol involved wound debridement, application of artificial dermis (Pelnac®), and semi-occlusive dressing (IV3000®). Outcomes were assessed using subjective questionnaires and objective measures, including fingerprint regeneration, sensory function, pain, and cosmetic appearance. The impact of injury characteristics on outcomes and treatment duration was evaluated. Complications were recorded, and patient satisfaction was assessed. Results: The mean treatment duration was 45.29 days (SD=17.53), with no significant differences based on injury characteristics. Complications were minimal, with only one case (3.22%) directly attributable to the treatment. Fingerprint regeneration was considerable (mean score=2.58, SD=0.67), with slightly better scores in bone-exposed injuries. Sensory disturbances were minimal, with no significant differences across injury types. Post-treatment pain was low (mean=0.45, SD=0.67), and cosmetic satisfaction was high (mean=4.09, SD=0.94). Overall patient satisfaction was high (mean=4.41, SD=0.67), regardless of injury severity. Discussion: This study demonstrates the efficacy of a conservative approach using artificial dermis and semi-occlusive dressing for fingertip injuries with volar pulp defects. The treatment protocol achieved favorable outcomes in tissue regeneration, sensory recovery, pain management, and cosmetic appearance while minimizing complications and morbidity associated with traditional surgical interventions. The high patient satisfaction across all injury types highlights the patient-centered nature of this approach. Conclusions: The conservative treatment protocol using artificial dermis and semi-occlusive dressing is a promising strategy for managing fingertip injuries with volar pulp defects. This approach harnesses the body's regenerative potential, minimizes surgical morbidity, and achieves excellent functional and aesthetic outcomes. Further research is needed to optimize treatment protocols and investigate long-term outcomes.

Autonomous mobile robots are essential to the industry, and human-robot interactions are becoming more common nowadays. These interactions require that the robots navigate scenarios with static and dynamic obstacles in a safely manner, avoiding collisions. This paper presents a physical implementation of a method for dynamic obstacle avoidance using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network that obtains information from the mobile robot’s LiDAR for it to be capable of navigating through scenarios with static and dynamic obstacles while avoiding collisions and reaching its goal. The model is implemented using a TurtleBot3 mobile robot within an OptiTrack Motion Capture (MoCap) system for obtaining its position at any given time. The user operates the robot through these scenarios, recording its LiDAR readings, target point, position inside the MoCap system, and its linear and angular velocities, all of which serve as the input for the LSTM network. The model is trained on data from multiple user-operated trajectories across five different scenarios, outputting the linear and angular velocities for the mobile robot. Physical experiments prove that the model is successful in allowing the mobile robot to reach the target point in each scenario while avoiding the dynamic obstacle, with a validation accuracy of 98.02%.

The opportunities and advantages of implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to optimize the process control of wastewater treatment in the Oil and Gas industry are discussed in this work. Discussion is centered around five major points: 1) Various types of Oil and Gas wastewater (Sour, Oily, Produced) and industry standards/methods for treatment, including specific case studies and challenges when treating certain wastewater. This section aims at the common types of wastewater in the Oil and Gas industry and how they are generally treated. 2) How AI/ML has been implemented in wastewater treatment in various industries; summary of which AI/ML languages were used along with a brief overview of how they work. This article focused on an understanding of the specific case studies and AI explanations to understand the effectiveness of wastewater treatment using AI/ML. 3) AI that is currently implemented in Oil and Gas such as personal protective equipment (PPE), smartwatches radiofrequency identification etc. This showed that AI/ML already plays a successful role in the Oil and Gas industry and has proven to help optimize many processes and components. Many of these AI/ML implementations are now industry standards and have greatly benefitted the industry. This section demonstrates that the implementation and the use of AI/ML have been proven to be a successful endeavor and that expanding the role of AI/ML would be beneficial. 5) Using the established points from the previous sections the paper outlines why AI/ML is ideal for Oil and Gas wastewater treatment; this argument centers around fit-for-purpose treatment, and the possible uses of the treated water. A determination of the best-suited AI languages, possible implementation scenarios, and how this would shift the way Oil and Gas industries treat and approach wastewater is presented to the reader.

The healthcare situation in Africa is characterized by limited resources and a high burden of disease, presenting significant challenges to the healthcare systems in the region. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in African healthcare holds immense potential for addressing these challenges and improving health outcomes. The objective of this review article is to not only highlight the potential benefits that AI can bring to African healthcare but also to emphasize the urgent need for action and collaboration in implementing and scaling up AI innovations in the region. By doing so, African countries can pave the way for improved health outcomes and ensure that their populations receive the healthcare services they deserve.

Dengue is one the most significant mosquito-borne viral diseases globally, with its prevalence extending across tropical and subtropical regions, exerting a considerable financial strain on health systems. Despite decades of research leading to the development of a vaccine implemented in endemic countries, its usage remains restricted to a fraction of the population at risk of contracting dengue. Due to these limitations, there is a growing focus on research aimed at unraveling the cellular mechanisms crucial for Dengue virus (DENV) infection to pinpoint potential host targets. Multiple studies propose a pivotal role of cytoskeletal remodeling in DENV infection. Specifically, DENV alters the organization of actin to facilitate viral entry, replication, and release. In this study, we investigated the involvement of the protein c-Abl, a kinase crucial in actin dynamics, in the context of DENV infection. Our findings suggest that either silencing or pharmacological inhibition of the kinase c-Abl leads to accumulation of dengue ENV protein in vitro, associated with actin remodeling. These results illuminate cellular mechanisms that could serve as potential therapeutic alternatives for dengue management.

The aim of this study is to develop an African Neutral Network (ANN) model for predicting temperature and relative humidity in the greenhouse during the calendar year. Input data are ambient temperature and relative humidity outside of the greenhouse chosen for a typical meteorological year for the location of the object and the values of temperature and relative humidity of the air in the greenhouse, obtained as a result of a TRNSYS dynamic simulation of the thermal load of the facility. The goal was to show that our ANN model is capable of making predictions over extended time period. The TRNSYS model was created on a real object, taking into account all relevant parameters, in order to describe the dynamic behavior of the object as good as possible. The ANN model is formed of 3 layers, where the number of neurons in the hidden layer is obtained by training different types in order to reach the optimal number of neurons, and the values of the learning rate and epochs are also varied. The activation functions were respectively the hyperbolic tangent in the hidden layer and the linear function in the output layer. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Correlation Coefficient were chosen as the statistical criteria for measuring of the network performance. MAE and RMSE showed that the model with 6 neurons in the hidden layer gave the best results of data prediction in relation to the input data. Statistical analysis of output shows that, the RMSE and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) between the measured and predicted temperature was 0.3166 °C and 0.1002°, and the relative humidity RMSE and MAE was 5.9% and 3.4%, respectively, which can satisfy the demand of greenhouse climate control. The results of the study showed that the model can be used with satisfactory accuracy to predict the parameters of the internal environment, in relation to the complex simulation of the thermal load of the object.

The prediction of hydrological flows (rainfall-depth or rainfall-discharge) is becoming increasingly important in the management of hydrological risks such as floods. In this study, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, a state-of-the-art algorithm dedicated to time series, is applied to predict the daily water level of lake Nokoue in Benin. This paper aims to provide an effective and reliable method enable of reproducing the future daily water level of Lake Nokoue, which is influenced by a combination of two phenomena: rainfall and river flow (runoff from the Ouémé River, the Sô River, the Porto-Novo lagoon, and the Atlantic Ocean). Performance analysis based on the forecasting horizon indicates that LSTM can predict the water level of Nokoué Lake up to a forecast horizon of t+10 days. Performance metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), coefficient of correlation (R²), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) agree on a forecast horizon of up to t+3 days. The values of these metrics remain stable for forecast horizons of t+1 days, t+2 days, and t+3 days. The values of R² and NSE are greater than 0.97 during the training and testing phases in the Nokoué Lake basin. Based on the evaluation indices used to assess the model's performance for the appropriate forecast horizon of water level in the Nokoué lake basin, the forecast horizon of t+3 days is chosen for predicting future daily water levels.

Nowadays the dynamism induced by the constant change of strategic decisions on the markets produces an extra difficulty in the management of an organization. The strategic decisions made by managers can become obsolete in a short period of time. One of the major difficulties in managing a commercial organization is to predict, with some precision degree, the impact some strategic decisions have on the financial results. Business Intelligence (BI) is an area widely used to help managers to make strategic decisions. But the methods used, behind the scenes, to achieve the conclusions are kept secret by BI company-based services. Modelling the environment can be a good option to study the impact of an action, provided by a strategic decision, in a real environment. A good model should give an approximate result of an action applied to a previous state of the environment. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are proven to be excellent in modeling environments with some level of data noise. The same strategic action can have different results in different organizations. A tool that allows an evaluation of a strategic action applied to an environment should have a major importance in the management scope. Modeling the environment should save time and money for the organization to improve the performance of the strategic plan. If one evaluates the state of the environment after a strategic action being applied, it can be possible to mitigate the risk of failure of the strategic plan. As we will be able to verify, it is possible to use ANNs to model strategic environments that should allow the prediction of sales and operating results by the used strategies with some precision, although the level of success will be directly related with the user’s necessity.

In the dynamic landscape of modern education, characterized by an increasingly active involvement of IT technologies in learning, the imperative to transfer to students the skills necessary to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the process represents an important goal. This paper presents a novel framework for knowledge transfer, diverging from traditional programming language-centric approaches by integrating PSoC 6 microcontroller technology. This framework establishes a cyclical learning cycle encompassing theoretical fundamentals and practical experimentation, fostering AI literacy at the edge. Through a structured combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on experimentation, students develop proficiency in understanding and harnessing AI capabilities. Emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, this approach equips students with the tools to navigate the complexities of real-world AI applications effectively. By leveraging PSoC 6 as an educational tool, a new generation of individuals is efficiently cultivated with essential AI skills. These individuals are adept at leveraging AI technologies to address societal challenges and drive innovation, thereby contributing to long-term sustainability initiatives. Specific strategies for experiential learning, curriculum recommendations, and results of knowledge application are presented, aimed at preparing students to excel in a future where AI will be omnipresent and indispensable.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a powerful catalyst poised to reshape the global sustaina-bility landscape by facilitating the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This comprehensive Delphi study meticulously probes the insights of domain experts, shedding light on the strategic utilization of AI to advance these critical sustainability objectives. Employing rigorous statistical techniques, encompassing measures of central tendency and interquartile de-viation, this research scrutinizes consensus dynamics among experts and elucidates potential variations in their viewpoints. The findings resoundingly convey experts' collective positive perspective regarding AI's pivotal role in propelling the SDGs forward. Through two iterative rounds of extensive discussions, a compelling consensus crystallizes—AI indeed exerts an overall positive impact, exemplified by a robust mean score of 78.8%. Intriguingly, distinct SDGs manifest varied propensities toward AI intervention, with Goals 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 15 basking in the radiance of highly positive impacts. Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 12 exhibit positive impact scores, indicating a juncture ripe for positive advancements. Meanwhile, Goal 16 and Goal 17 languish with neutral scores, signifying a juncture demanding nuanced deliberations about AI's impact on peace, justice, and strong institutions as well as on partnerships for the goals respectively. This paper underscores AI as a formidable instrument poised to address humanity's most pressing challenges while harmonizing seamlessly with the overarching SDG objectives. It gracefully dovetails into established practices across pivotal domains such as health, education, and resilient infrastructures, amplifying the collective global endeavor to navigate the path toward a more sustainable future.

Accurate estimations of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) are fundamental for various environmental issues. Artificial Intelligence-based models are considered a promising alternative to the most common direct ETa estimation techniques and indirect methods by remote sensing (RS)-based surface energy balance models. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are proven to be suitable for predicting reference evapotranspiration and ETa based on RS data. The aim of this study is to develop a methodology based on ANNs for estimating daily ETa values using NDVI and land surface temperature, coupled with limited site-specific climatic variables at a large irrigation catchment. Two scenarios were implemented by the ANN model. Data from only the 38 days of satellite overpass dates was selected in Scenario-I, while the 769-day data included the satellite overpass dates and other days located between two satellite overpass acquisitions in Scenario-II. An irrigation scheme in the Mediterranean region of Turkiye was selected, and a total of 38 Landsat images, and local climatic data were used in 2021 and 2022. Results showed that R2 values in Scenario-I and II were acknowledgeably high for training (0.79 and 0.86), testing (0.75 and 0.81), and the entire dataset (0.76 and 0.84), respectively. Results of the new model in two scenarios showed acceptable agreement with ETa-METRIC values. The proposed ANN model demonstrated the potential of obtaining daily ETa using limited climatic data and RS imagery.

Background: The growth of arthroplasty procedures requires innovative strategies to reduce inpatients Length of Stay (LOS). This study aims to develop a machine learning prediction model that may aid to predict LOS after hip or knee arthroplasties. Methods: A collection of all the clinical notes of patients undergoing elective primary or revision arthroplasty from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019 was performed. The hospitalization has been classified as “Short LOS” if it was less than or equal to 6 days and “Long LOS” if it was greater than 7 days. Clinical data coming from pre-operative laboratory analysis, vital parameters, demographic characteristics of patients were screened. Final data have been used to train a Logistic Regression model with the aim of predicting short or long LOS. Results: Final dataset was composed of 1517 patients (795 “LONG”, 722 “SHORT”, p = 0.3196) with a total of 1541 admissions (729 “LONG”, 812 “SHORT”, p < 0.000). Complete model had a prediction efficacy of 78,99% (AUC 0.7899). Conclusions: Machine learning may facilitate day-by-day clinical practice predicting which patients are suitable for a shorter LOS, from those with a longer LOS in which a cautious approach could be recommended.

The accurate and timely assessment of lymph node involvement is paramount in the management of patients with malignant tumors, owing to its direct correlation with cancer staging, therapeutic strategy formulation, and prognostication. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), as a burgeoning imaging modality, has shown promising results in the diagnosis and prediction of preoperative metastatic lymph nodes in recent years. This article aims to explore the application of DECT in identifying metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) across various cancer types, including but not limited to thyroid carcinoma (focusing on papillary thyroid carcinoma), lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. Through this narrative review, we aim to elucidate the clinical relevance and utility of DECT in the detection and predictive assessment of lymph node metastasis in malignant tumors, thereby contributing to the broader academic discourse in oncologic radiology and diagnostic precision.

Breast cancer has become the most diagnosed cancer in women globally with 2.3 million new diagnosis each year. Accurate early staging is essential for improving survival rates with metastatic spread from loco regional to distant metastasis decreasing rates by 50%. Current guidelines do not advice the routine use of Positron Emission Tomography (PET)-Computed Tomography (CT) in staging of early breast cancer in the absence of symptoms. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that PET-CT used in this early stage can benefit the patient by improving staging and as a result treatment and outcome as well as psychological burden without increasing costs to the health service. Ongoing research in PET radiomics and artificial intelligence is showing promising future prospects in its use in diagnosis, staging, prognosticatication and assessing response to treatment in breast cancer. Furthermore ongoing research to address current limitations of PET-CT by improving techniques and tracers is encouraging.

The effect of climate change plays a significant role on groundwater level variations and crop yield. The change in climate leading to increased temperatures, decreased rainfalls and extreme drought conditions ultimately cause low groundwater level and crop yield. Judicious groundwater management technology viz., water recharge options, need based irrigation, crop selection, must be adapted for further increasing the water table level in soil ecosystem. Additionally, climate change impacts combined with changes in agricultural water use can affect groundwater dynamics. Increased irrigation demand and decreased summer precipitation can lower groundwater levels, impacting crop production. Overall, climate change affects both groundwater resources and crop yield highlighting the need for sustainable water management practices and consideration of soil properties in agricultural modelling. The authors carefully selected relevant research articles addressing the impact of climate change on ground water level in Asian countries. The review highlights the use of machine learning method to ground water level and crop yield modelling. According to the study, machine learning techniques have made significant contributions to predicting groundwater level changes and crop yield with higher accuracies, high performance and less running time.

The purpose of this study is to ​​explore the use of a custom Transformer model in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that translate the neural activity present when an individual with limited verbal and fine-motor skills attempts to handwrite. As found in previous studies, Transformers have performed better than recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in translation tasks which are similar to its usage here in decoding neural signals into intended handwritten text. Due to the known benefits of a Transformer, the hypothesis was that the Transformer would show promise in the context of a BCI through the recorded metrics. The neural signals of a tetraplegic individual, when they attempted to handwrite, were provided by existing research. Four trials were conducted using data with or without augmentation which the model used when training to separately minimize training loss and validation loss. When comparing the results of a BCI with the implementation of a Transformer model with the original RNN BCI (the original data source), the Transformer model performed less favorably across all four trials. Although the results do not indicate that the Transformer model currently outperforms an RNN BCI, it is important to note that further testing of the model's capabilities (such as training it with a larger and more preferable dataset and/or for longer, comparing training times between the RNN and Transformer, and/or seeing how the Transformer is improved with an offline autocorrect feature) is necessary before determining whether Transformers can enhance communication in this manner.

Generative AI has gained enormous interest nowadays due to new applications like chatGPT, DALL E, Stable Difussion and Deep Fake. Particularly DALL E, Stable Difussion and others (Adobe Firefly, ImagineArt...) are able to create images from a text prompt and are also able to recreate real photographs. Due to this fact, intense research has arisen to create new image forensics applications able to distinguish between real captured images and videos and artificial ones. Detecting forgeries made with Deep Fake is one of the most researched issues. This paper is about another kind of forgery detection. The purpose of this research aims to detect photo realistic AI created images versus real photos coming from a physical camera. For this purpose, techniques that perform a pixel level feature extraction are used. First one is Photo Response Non-Uniformity (PRNU). PRNU is a special noise due to imperfections on the camera sensor that is used for source camera identification. The underlying idea is that AI images will have a different PRNU pattern. Second one is Error level analysis (ELA). This is other type of feature extraction traditionally used for detecting image editions. In fact, ELA is being used nowadays by photographers to detect manually AI created images. Both kinds of features are used to train Convolutional Neural Networks to differentiate between AI images and real photographs. Good results are obtained achieving accuracy rates over 95%. Both extraction methods are carefully assessed by computing precision/recall and F1-score measurements.

The present work fronts the human pose estimation problem, developing a method that enables automated ergonomic risk assessment. A research methodology is developed to calculate joint angles from digital snapshots or videos by using computer vision and machine learning techniques to get a more accurate ergonomic risk assessment. Starting from an ergonomic analysis, the study explores the use of a semi-supervised training method to detect the skeletons of workers. The research methodology developed aims to infer the positions and angles of the joints, to calculate the criticality index based on the RULA scores and fuzzy rules. Then, to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD), improve production capacity and decrease the ergonomic risk, the system uses joint with a collaborative robot to support the worker in carrying out the most critical operations. The method has been tested on a real industrial case in which manual assembly activities of electrical components are conducted. The approach developed can overcome the limitations of recent developments based on computer vision or wearable measurement, sensors by performing an assessment with an objective and flexible ap-proach to postural analysis development.

The aims of this paper can be traced back to goals number seven, twelve and thirteen introduced by Agenda 2030, namely "affordable and clean energy", “responsible consumption and production” and "climate action”, respectively. This is due to the fact that the present work supports decarbonization processes acting in a direct way on the electricity consumption achieved by plants pertaining to the waste industry; in fact, this study aims at the realization of a machine learning model for predicting the energy consumption achieved by a mechanical biological treatment (MBT) waste plant located in central Italy, given the distribution of the entering waste. This model is implemented in MATLAB. The model can be used to tune the distribution of the entering waste in order to adapt the plant energy consumption to the capability of the energy sources and can serve as a play-ground model for other energy transformation plants. The results of the study, which feed the literature on the application of artificial intelligence to real industrial plants, could be used to determine energy efficiency actions that could be incorporated into Property’s strategic planning.

Wirobond C is a commercial dental casting alloy suitable for the fabrication of crowns, bridges as well as metal-ceramic restorations. This work aims with the study of the effect of ready-to-use Listerine® and Meridol® mouthwashes and sodium fluoride on corrosion resistance of the CoCrMo dental alloy to electrochemical corrosion in artificial saliva at 37 °C. SEM, EDS, SKP, and microhardness investigations were carried out to characterize the material under study. In vitro corrosion resistance of the CoCrMo alloy was conducted by the open circuit potential method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and anodic polarization curves. The presence of Co 59.8(8) wt.%, Cr 31.5(4) wt.%, and Mo 8.8(6) wt.% was confirmed. The CoCrMo alloy was characterized by Vickers microhardness of 445(31) µHV0.3. Based on EIS data, the capacitive behavior and high corrosion resistance of CoCrMo alloy was revealed. The kinetics of pitting corrosion in the artificial saliva was lower after the modification with NaF and Listerine and Meridol mouthwashes. The potentiodynamic characteristics revealed the passive behavior of CoCrMo alloy in all solutions. Based on the SKP measurements of the CoCrMo alloy after corrosion tests, the effect of artificial saliva modification on electronic properties of Bego Wirobond C dental alloy was found.

The combined efect of shape and electrostatic complementarities (Sc, EC) at the interface of the interacting protein partners (PPI) serves as the physical basis for such associations and is a strong detterminant of their binding energetics. EnCPdock (https://www.scinetmol.in/EnCPdock/) presents a comprehensive web-platform for the direct conjoint comparative analyses of complementarity and binding energetics in PPIs. It elegantly interlinks the dual nature of local (Sc) and non-local complementarity (EC) in PPIs using the Complementarity Plot. It further derives an AI-based ∆G_binding with a prediction accuracy comparable to the state-of-the-art. This book-chapter presents a practical manual to conceptualize and implement EnCPdock with its various features and functionalities, collectively having the potential to serve as a valuable protein engineering tool in the design of novel protein interfaces.

Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder with considerable risks, including physical impairment and irreversible brain damage from seizures. Given these challenges, the urgency for prompt and accurate seizure detection cannot be overstated. Traditionally, experts have relied on manual EEG signal analyses for seizure detection, which is labor-intensive and prone to hu-man error. Recognizing this limitation, the rise of deep learning methods has been heralded as a promising avenue, offering more refined diagnostic precision. On the other hand, the prevailing challenge in many models is their constrained emphasis on specific domains, potentially diminishing their robustness and precision in complex real-world environments. This paper presents a novel model that seamlessly integrates the salient features from the time-frequency domain alongside pivotal statistical attributes derived from EEG signals. This fusion process involves the integration of essential statistics, including the mean, median, and variance, combined with the rich data from compressed time-frequency (CWT) images processed using auto-encoders. This multidimensional feature set provides a robust foundation for subsequent analytic steps. A long short-term memory (LSTM) network, meticulously optimized for the renowned Bonn Epilepsy dataset, was used to enhance the capability of the proposed model. Preliminary evaluations underscore the prowess of the proposed model: remarkable 100% accuracy in most of the binary classifications, impressive performance exceeding 95% for three-class and four-class challenges, and a commendable rate exceeding 93.5% for the five-class classification.

The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to considerable progress in Automated Fact Verification (AFV). This process involves collecting evidence for a statement, assessing its relevance, and predicting its accuracy. Recently, research has begun to explore automatic explanations as an integral part of the accuracy analysis process. However, the explainability within AFV is lagging compared to the wider field of explainable AI (XAI), which aims at making AI decisions more transparent. This study looks at the notion of explainability as a topic in the field of XAI, with a focus on how it applies to the specific task of Automatic Fact Verification. It examines the explainability of AFV, taking into account architectural, methodological, and dataset-related elements, with the aim of making AI more comprehensible and acceptable to the general society. Although there is a general consensus on the need for AI systems to be explainable, there a dearth of systems and processes to achieve it. In this research, we investigate the concept of explainable AI in general and demonstrate its various aspects through the particular task of Automated Fact Verification. We explore topic of faithfulness in the context of local and global explainability and how these correspond with architectural, methodological and data-based ways of achieving it. We examine these concepts for the specific case of AFV and analyze the current datasets used for AFV and how they can be adapted to further the identified aims on XAI. The paper concludes by highlighting the gaps and limitations in current data science practices and possible recommendations for modifications in architectural and data curation processes that would further the goals of XAI.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI), in particular large language models such as ChatGPT have reached public consciousness with a wide-ranging discussion of their capabilities and suitability for various professions. The extant literature on the ethics of generative AI revolves around its usage and application, rather than the ethical framework of the responses provided. In the education sector, concerns have been raised with regard to the ability of these language models to aid in student assignment writing with the potentially concomitant student misconduct of such work is submitted for assessment. Based on a series of ‘conversations’ with multiple replicates, using a range of discussion prompts, this paper examines the capability of ChatGPT to provide advice on how to cheat in assessments. Since its public release in November 2022, numerous authors have developed ‘jailbreaking’ techniques to trick ChatGPT into answering questions in ways other than the default mode. While the default mode activates a safety awareness mechanism that prevents ChatGPT from providing unethical advice, other modes partially or fully bypass the this mechanism and elicit answers that are outside expected ethical boundaries. ChatGPT provided a wide range of suggestions on how to best cheat in university assignments, with some solutions common to most replicates (‘plausible deniability,’ language adjustment of contract written text’). Some of ChatGPT’s solutions to avoid cheating being detected were cunning, if not slightly devious. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Parametric form findings of free-form space structures and qualitative assessment of their aesthetics are among the concerns of architects. This study aims to evaluate the aesthetic aspect of these structures using ML algorithms based on the expert's experiences. First, various datasets of forms were produced using a parametric algorithm of free-form space structures written in Grasshopper. Then, three multilayer perceptron ANN models were adjusted in their most optimal modes using the results of the preference test based on the aesthetic criteria including simplicity, complexity, and practicality. The results indicate that the ANN models can quantitatively evaluate the aesthetic value of free-form space structures.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is the loss of neurological function due to a sudden reduction in cerebral blood flow and is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. In recent years, the field of radiological imaging has experienced an explosion that may reach unprecedented heights with the advent of artificial intelligence. One of the latest innovations in artificial intelligence is radiomics, which is based on the fact that a large amount of quantitative data can be extracted from radiological images, from which patterns can be identified and associated with specific pathologies. Since its inception, radiomics has been particularly associated with the field of oncology, with promising results in a wide range of clinical situations. The performance of radiomics in non-tumour pathologies has been increasingly explored in recent years and the results continue to be promising. The aim of this review is to explore the potential applications of radiomics in AIS patients and to theorise how radiomics may change the paradigm for these patients in the coming years.

Background: Producing, distributing or discussing child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) is often committed through the dark web in order to remain hidden from search engines and regular users. Additionally, on the dark web, the CSAM creators employ various techniques to avoid detection and conceal their activities. The large volume of CSAM on the dark web presents a global social problem and poses a significant challenge for helplines, hotlines and law enforcement agencies. Objective: Identifying CSAM discussions on the dark web and uncovering associated metadata insights into characteristics, behaviours and motivation of CSAM creators. Participants and Setting: We have conducted an analysis of more than 353,000 posts generated by 35,400 distinct users and written in 118 different languages across eight dark web forums in 2022. Out of these, approximately 221,000 posts were written in English and contributed by around 29,500 unique users. Method: We propose a CSAM detection intelligence system. The system uses a manually labelled dataset to train, evaluate and select an efficient CSAM classification model. Once we identify CSAM creators and victims through CSAM posts on the dark web, we proceed to analyze, visualize and uncover information concerning the behaviors of CSAM creators and victims. Result: The CSAM classifier, based on Support Vector Machine model, exhibited good performance, achieving the highest precision of 92.3\%, accuracy of 87.6\% and recall of 84.2\%. Its prediction time is fast, taking only 0.3 milliseconds to process a single post on our laptop. While, the Naive Bayes combination is the best in term of recall, achieving 89\%, and its prediction time is just 0.1 microseconds per post. Across the eight forums in 2022, our Support Vector Machine model detected around 63,000 English CSAM posts and identified near 10,500 English CSAM creators. The analysis of metadata of CSAM posts revealed meaningful information about CSAM creators and their victims, such as: (1) the ages and nationalities of the victims typically mentioned by CSAM creators, (2) forum topics where the CSAM creators assign their posts, and (3) online platforms preferred by CSAM creators for sharing or uploading CSAM. Conclusion: Our CSAM detection system exhibits high performance in precision, recall, and accuracy in real-time when classifying CSAM and non-CSAM posts. Additionally, it can extract and visualize valuable and unique insights about CSAM creators and victims by employing advanced statistical methods. These insights prove beneficial to our partners, i.e. national hotlines and child agencies.

The opportunities and potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Environmental Assessment (EA) are often mentioned. However, do we in the EA field understand the implications of what is happening in other biological sciences, and are we preparing for the changes that are coming? This interdisciplinary letter focuses on AI-driven developments in biodiversity data and analysis as a starting point for stimulating discussion about what AI means in practice for the field of EA. We highlight implications for training, transformation of practice and decision making as first steps in a research agenda.

The deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems in decentralized environments is on the rise, yet representation of shared conceptualization in such scenarios remains a challenging issue. The absence of a shared understanding can lead to suboptimal performance of AI systems and hinders the ability to comprehend the knowledge and beliefs of agents in the domain. This paper proposes a formal model for modeling conceptualization in AI systems that integrates ontology, epistemology, and epistemic logic. The model aims to address the gap in representing shared conceptualization in decentralized environments and enhance the performance of AI systems operating in such environments. The proposed model is a hybrid structure that blends extensional and intensional structures and leverages logic-based languages for modeling purposes. A case study in the healthcare sector is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed model. The study contributes to the existing literature by providing a formal model for representing shared conceptualization in decentralized environments, which can be utilized to optimize the performance of AI systems in these environments.

This research investigates the potential benefits of integrating machine learning algorithms and IoT sensors in modern agriculture. The focus is on optimizing crop production and reducing waste through informed decisions about planting, watering, and harvesting crops. The paper discusses the current state of machine learning and IoT in agriculture, highlighting key challenges and opportunities. It also presents experimental results that demonstrate the impact of changing labels on the accuracy of data analysis algorithms. The findings recommend that by analyzing wide-ranging data collected from farms, including real-time data from IoT sensors, farmers can make more informed verdicts about factors that affect crop growth. Eventually, the integration of these technologies can transform modern agriculture by increasing crop yields while minimizing waste. In our studies, we achieve a classification accuracy of 99.59% using the Bayes Net algorithm and 99. 46% using Naïve Bayes Classifier, and Hoeffding Tree algorithms. Our results indicate that we achieved high accuracy results in our experiments in order to increase crop growth.

A low-profile broadband dual-polarized antenna is investigated for base station applications. It consists of two orthogonal dipoles, fork-shaped feeding lines, an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC), and parasitic strips. By utilizing the dispersion Brillouin diagram, the AMC is designed as the antenna reflector. It has a wide in-phase reflection bandwidth of 54.7% (1.54-2.70 GHz) and a surface wave bound range of 0-2.65 GHz. This design effectively reduces the antenna profile by over 50% compared to traditional antennas without an AMC. For demonstration, a prototype is fabricated for 2G/3G/LTE base station applications. Good agreement between simulations and measurements is observed. The measured -10-dB impedance bandwidth of our antenna is 55.4% (1.58 –2.79 GHz), with a stable gain of 9.5 dBi and high isolation of more than 30 dB across the impedance passband. As a result, this antenna is an excellent candidate for miniaturized base station antenna applications.

The study's Methodology consists of three key stages: data acquisition, pre-processing, and Model Building.

Jaundice is a common condition for newborns, and its complications can be severe and cause permanent damage to the patient’s brain if no action is taken at its early stages. Current methods for jaundice detection are invasive, which include collecting blood samples from the patient, which can be painful and stressful and may cause some complications. Alternatively, a non-invasive approach can be used to diagnose jaundice through image-processing and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, requiring a database of infant images to achieve a high-accuracy diagnosis. This data article provides a collection of newborn images, called NJN, with various birthweight and skin tones, with ages ranging from 2 to 8 days, and an excel sheet file in CSV format for the values of RGB and YCrCb channels and the status for each raw which is freely accessible at (https://sites.google.com/view/neonataljaundice). It also provides Python code for data testing using different AI techniques. Thus, this article offers a unique resource for all AI researchers to train their AI system and develop algorithms to help neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) healthcare specialists monitor neonates and provide fast, real-time, non-invasive, and accurate jaundice diagnosis.

In this paper we use quantum machine learning to detect and classify ocular diseases across age related macular degradation, cataract, diabetic, glaucoma, hypertension, and patological myopia categories versus a control group. We analyze fundus imagery from 1000 patients. Early findings indicate there may be benefit in terms of accuracy and loss function minimization of 2.07% and 1.979x respectively compared to a similar method implemented using traditional computers.

This article proposes application of a new mathematical model of spots for solving inverse problems using a learning method, which is similar to using the deep learning. In general, the spots represent vague figures in abstract “information spaces” or crisp figures with lack of in-formation about their shapes and are adequate for representation human mental images and reasoning in Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, crisp figures are regarded as a special and limiting case of spots. A basic mathematical apparatus, basing on L4 numbers, has been developed for the representation and processing of qualitative information of elementary spatial relations between spots. Also, we defined L4 vectors, L4 matrices, and mathematical operations on them. Developed apparatus can be used in AI, in particular, for knowledge representation and for modeling qualitative reasoning and learning. Another application area is the solution of inverse problems by learning. For example, this can be applied to image reconstruction using ultrasound, X-ray, magnetic resonance, or radar scan data. The introduced apparatus was verified by solving problems of reconstruction of images, utilizing only qualitative data of its elementary relations with some scanning figures. This article also demonstrates application of spot-based inverse Radon algorithm for binary image reconstruction.

Without the use of medicine drones, users are responsible for transporting goods at a high cost. The goal of this patient monitoring system is to identify people's health and, if necessary, administer medicine. The transportation drone is capable of finding healthcare information in a 360-degree rotation within the transportation infrastructure. IoT: Drone doctors are critical for the transportation of small gadgets such as drug treatments, blood leakages, and vaccines in the critical conditions of a heart patient, in the event of failure of traffic location infrastructure, highway roads, or hospitals due to intense climate or site visitor congestion, and for the transportation of small gadgets such as drug treatments, blood leakages, and vaccines. When transmission is difficult, the self-maintaining drone is the format for quickly transporting drug treatments to the appropriate locations. The shipping drone equipped with an Ardupilot can drive in autopilot mode, which guides the drone to its destination. It has a 7-minute flying period and can deliver up to 2 kg of medicine. When the detected heartbeat is 94bpm and the fever range is 101 degrees, a method has been presented in which an IoT Drone Doctor (IDD) System distributes the first AID box to vulnerable patients and heart patients.

Real estate market analysis and place-based decision-making can both benefit from understanding house price development. Although considerable amounts of interest have been devoted to housing price modelling, the assessment of house price fluctuation still requires further comparing studies. Housing price prediction is challenging as contributing factors are quite dynamic and subject to a variety of regulating elements. The future understanding of the housing market trends not only provides sufficient customers’ investment trust potential but also enables the financial support to progress more realistic in advance. In this study, a comprehensive data-informed framework is developed to investigate and anticipate real estate house prices using historical data by combining explanatory features. We examined about 500 houses in the Boston area as a case study and discussed how the increase in housing prices could vary by each of the contributing components. Fourteen Machine Learning (ML) regressors imply to the dataset and lead to a comparative study of the accuracy of all the models. ML-based regressors forecast real estate home prices as a function of thirteen influencing factors. The most informative features were also selected by conducting the Permutation Feature Importance technique on all the features The study provides a comprehensive tool for evaluating the robustness and efficiency of ML models for housing price predictions. The results highlighted Random Forest as the best model has an R2 equals to 0.88 and Voting Regressor as the second highest rated model has R2 equals to 0.87. Results of multivariate exploratory data analysis also implied that the average number of rooms and percentage of the lower status of the population have the most significant impact on the price range predictions.

When computers start to become a dominant part of technology around the 1950s, fundamental questions about reliable designs and robustness were of great relevance. Their development gave rise to the exploration of new questions such as what made brains reliable (since neurons can die) and how computers could get inspiration from neural systems. In parallel, the first Artificial Neural Networks came to life. Since then, the comparative view between brains and computers has been developed in new, sometimes unsuspected directions. With the rise of deep learning and the development of connectomics, an evolutionary look at how both hardware and neural complexity have evolved or designed is required. In this paper, we argue that important similarities have resulted both from convergent evolution (the inevitable outcome of architectural constraints) and inspiration of hardware and software principles guided by toy pictures of neurobiology. Moreover, dissimilarities and gaps originate from the lack of major innovations that have paved the way to biological computing (including brains) that are completely absent within the artificial domain. As it occurs within synthetic biocomputation, we can also ask whether alternative minds can emerge from A.I.\ designs. Here we take an evolutionary view of the problem and discuss the remarkable convergences between living and artificial designs and what are the pre-conditions to achieve artificial intelligence.

In the past two decades, metaheuristic optimization algorithms (MOAs) have been increasingly popular, particularly in logistic, science, and engineering problems. The fundamental characteristics of such algorithms are that they are dependent on a parameter or a strategy. Some online and offline strategies are employed in order to obtain optimal configurations of the algorithms. Adaptive operator selection is one of them, and it determines whether or not to update a strategy from the strategy pool during the search process. In the filed of machine learning, Reinforcement Learning (RL) refers to goal-oriented algorithms, which learn from the environment how to achieve a goal. On MOAs, reinforcement learning has been utilised to control the operator selection process. Existing research, however, fails to show that learned information may be transferred from one problem-solving procedure to another. The primary goal of the proposed research is to determine the impact of transfer learning on RL and MOAs. As a test problem, a set union knapsack problem with 30 separate benchmark problem instances is used. The results are statistically compared in depth. The learning process, according to the findings, improved the convergence speed while significantly reducing the CPU time.

Making computing machines mimic living organisms has captured the imagination of many since the dawn of digital computers. However, today’s artificial intelligence technologies fall short in replicating even the basic autopoietic and cognitive behaviors found in primitive biological systems. According Charles Darwin, the difference in mind between humans and the higher animals, great as it is, certainly is one of degree and not of kind. Autopoiesis refers to the behavior of a system that replicates itself and maintains its own identity and stability while facing fluctuations caused by external influences. Cognitive behaviors model the system’s state, sense internal and external changes, analyze, predict and take action to mitigate any risk to its functional fulfilment. How did intelligence evolve? what is the relationship between the mind and body? Answers to these questions should guide us to infuse autopoietic and cognitive behaviors into digital machines. In this paper we use recent advances in our understanding of general theory of information, and the role of structures in managing the transformations between information and knowledge to pave the path to infuse autopoietic and cognitive functions into digital computing and build a new class of intelligent machines going beyond the current state of the art.

Landslides are serious geological hazards that become a disaster worldwide, causing a large number of casualties and economic losses every year. There are many factors affecting landslide susceptibility, such as rainfall, soil and slope. Each of them has an important role in the process of slope losing stability. In this paper, the effects of rainfall intensity, rainfall pattern, slope gradient and soil type on landslide susceptibility are studied. In the process of rainfall-induced landslide, the relevant physical quantities of soil changes continuously. Their values and processes are closely related to the time of landslide occurrence. Hence, the variation of soil volumetric water content, matrix suction, pore water pressure and total stress throughout the rainfall are measured. As the results, soil type, slope gradient and rainfall intensity have a large influence on landslide susceptibility. The occurrence of landslides has a prerequisite that the slope is greater than or equal to 15°. The rainfall intensity needs to be not less than 80 mm/h. The difference of rainfall pattern also affects the landslide susceptibility. The rainfall pattern with rainfall intensity peak at the later stage is more likely to induce landslide. Coarser soils with gravels are prone to landslides when other conditions are the same. Steeper slopes, stronger rainfall, and coarser soils can all increase the amount of sediment yield.

Resistance spot welding is an established joining process in the production of safety-relevant components in the automotive industry. Therefore, a consecutive process monitoring is essential to meet the high-quality requirements. Artificial neural networks can be used to evaluate the process parameters and signals to ensure the individual spot weld quality. The predictive accuracy of such algorithms depends on the provided training data set and the prediction of untrained data is challenging. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extrapolation capability of the multi-layer perceptron model. That means, that the predictive performance of the model will be tested with data that clearly differs from the training data in terms of material and coating composition. Therefore, three multi-layer perceptron regression models were implemented to predict the nugget diameter from process data. The three models were able to predict the trained datasets very well. The models, which were provided with features from the dynamic resistance curve predicted the new dataset better than the model with only process parameters. This study shows the beneficial influence of the process signals on the predictive accuracy and robustness of artificial neural network algorithms. Especially, when predicting a data set from outside of the training space.

Today, across the most critical problems faced by hospitals and health centers are those caused by the existence of patients who do not attend their appointments. Among others, this practice generates waste of resources and increases the patients’ waiting list. To handle these problems, hospitals are actively trying to implement methods to reduce the idle time caused by patient no-shows. Many scheduling systems developed require predicting whether a patient will show up for an appointment or not. Although, a challenging problem resides in obtaining these estimates precisely. The goal of this work is to analyze how objective factors influence a patient not to attending their appointment, to identify the main causes that contribute to a patient’s decision, and to be able to predict whether or not the patient will attend the scheduled appointment. As a result, the obtained model is tested on a real dataset collected in a health center linked to the University of Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), which includes 25 features and about 5000 samples. The algorithm that produced the best results for the available dataset is the Random Forest classifier. It reveals the best recall rate (0.91), since it measures the ability of a classifier to find all the positive instances and achieves a receiver operating characteristic curve rate of 0.969.

The aerosol optical depth is an important indicator of aerosol particle properties and associated radiative impacts. AOD determination is therefore very important to achieve relevant climate modeling. Most remote sensing techniques to retrieve aerosol optical depth are applicable to daytime given the high level of light available. The night represents half of the time but in such conditions only a few remote sensing techniques are available. Among these techniques, the most reliable are moon photometers and star photometers. In this paper, we attempt to fill gaps in the aerosol detection performed with the aforementioned techniques using night sky brightness measurements during moonless nights with the novel CoSQM: a portable, low cost and open-source multispectral photometer. In this paper, we present an innovative method for estimating the aerosol optical depth by using an empirical relationship between the zenith night sky brightness measured at night with the CoSQM and the aerosol optical depth retrieved at daytime from the AErosol Robotic NETwork. Such a method is especially suited to light-polluted regions with light pollution sources located within a few kilometers of the observation site. A coherent day-to-night aerosol optical depth and Ångström Exponent evolution in a set of 354 days and nights from August 2019 to February 2021 was verified at the location of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the island of Tenerife, Spain. The preliminary uncertainty of this technique was evaluated using the variance under stable day-to-night conditions, set at 0.02 for aerosol optical depth and 0.75 for Ångström Exponent. These results indicate the set of CoSQM and the proposed methodology appear to be a promising tool to add new information on the aerosol optical properties at night, which could be of key importance to improve climate predictions.

One of the key geophysical technologies for the energy industry during energy transition to zero footprint is fluid imaging. Knowledge of fluid distribution allows better, more optimized production reducing thus CO2 footprint per barrel produced and for CO2 storage the knowledge of where stored fluids go is mandatory to monitor reservoir seals. Electromagnetic is the preferred way to image fluid due to its strong coupling to the fluid resistivity. Unfortunately, acquiring and interpreting the data takes too long to contribute significantly to field operation and cost optimization. Using artificial intelligence and Cloud based data acquisition we can reduce the operational feedback to near real time and for the interpretation to close to 24 h. This then opens new door for the usefulness of this technology from exploration, monitoring and allows the application envelope to be enlarged to much noisier environment where real time acquisition can be optimized based on the acquired data.

This study presents the consecutive modification of orange peel (OP) by NaOH and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) for simultaneous elimination of basic dyes from the binary system and modeling the adsorption process using an intelligent tool. The natural and modified biosorbents were characterized by variety of analyses such as: field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray, N2 physisorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. The influence of various variables on dye removal like pH, the quantity of biosorbents, dyes concentration, contact time, and temperature in the binary system were investigated and optimized by an artificial neural network (ANN) model as an intelligent tool. The optimum quantity of the sorbent was found to be 0.30 g for orange peel (OP) and 0.25 g for NaOH-treated OP (NOP) and SDS-decorated NOP (SNOP) at pH = 7. The kinetics and thermodynamics investigations showed that the removal of dyes obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and were spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Moreover, in order to describe the mechanism of sorption process, desorption studies of dyes were carried out. The desorption percentages of methylene blue (MB) in water and HCl were found to be in the range of 1.93%–4.76% and 18.87%–28.76%, respectively; in addition, the desorption percentages of crystal violet (CV) in water and HCl were obtained to be in the range of 4.11%–7.41% and 32.84%–43.00%, respectively; which could be a recommendation ion exchange or electrostatic attachment of dyes onto biosorbents. The ANN predictions matched with the experimental data very well (0.95308 < R2 < 0.99191 and 0.98335 < R2 < 0.99773 for MB and CV, respectively) which indicated high accuracy of the ANN model. In addition, the relative importance of each parameter was calculated by Garson’s equation.

The forecast of electricity demand has been a recurrent research topic for decades, due to its economical and strategic relevance. Several Machine Learning (ML) techniques have evolved in parallel with the complexity of the electric grid. This paper reviews a wide selection of approaches that have used Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to forecast electricity demand, aiming to help newcomers and experienced researchers to appraise the common practices and to detect areas where there is room for improvement in the face of the current widespread deployment of smart meters and sensors, which yields an unprecedented amount of data to work with. The review looks at the specific problems tackled by each one of the selected papers, at the results attained by their algorithms, and at the strategies followed to validate and compare the results. This way, it is possible to highlight some peculiarities and algorithm configurations that seem to consistently outperform others in specific settings.

Purpose - Soil aggregates are of great significance to soil and water conservation and ecological environment construction in arid area of northwest district．Methods - Exploring the effects of different vegetation includes types and land use methods on the stability of soil aggregates in the Loess Plateau, and provide reference for the rational use and management of land, also the improvement of soil structure in the region. Select 9 types of samples of 0-30 cm of typical soil plots as the research objects, compare and analyze the particle size index, stability differences and anti-erodibility of soil aggregates under various vegetation cover. Results - The results show that P value, MWD value, GMD value, D value, and AI value of the 0-10cm surface soil all show the maximum value. As the depth increases, the size distribution of the above index values of each soil sample in the 10-20cm and 20-30cm layers is different; P value in the 0-30cm depth layer is linearly positively correlated with the AI value and MWD value, and linearly negatively correlated with the D value. The correlation coefficient R between each variable is in the range of 0.78-0.97, and the D value reflects the Loess Plateau area stability and erosion resistance of soil aggregates better. GMD and MWD value show an exponential relationship, the correlation coefficient R value of 10-20cm height layer is 0.46; AI and MWD value in 0-10cm, 20-30cm height layer have a power function relationship, 10-20cm height layer has a polynomial function, the correlation coefficient R value is 0.97. The scour coefficient of different soil samples has a high degree of dispersion, the maximum CV value is 1.92, and the minimum value is 0.49. Conclusions - The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the ecological and hydrological benefit evaluation of slope erosion control and vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau.

Machine Learning has completely transformed health care system, which transmits medical data through IOT sensors. So it is very important to encrypt them to protect patient data. encrypting medical images from a performance perspective consumes time; hence the use of an auto encoder is essential. An auto encoder is used in this work to compress the image as a vector prior to the encryption process. The digital image passes across description function and a decoder to get back the image in the proposed work; various experiments are carried out on hyper parameters to achieve the highest outcome of the classification. The findings demonstrate that the combination of Mean Square Logarithmic Error as the loss function, ADA grad as an optimizer, two layers for the encoder, and another reverse for the decoder, RELU as the activation function generates the best auto encoder results. The combination of Mean square error (lose function), RMS prop (optimizer), three layers for the encoder and another reverse for the decoder, and RELU (activation function) has the best classification result. All the experiments with different hyper parameter has run almost very close to each other even when changing the number of layers. The running time is between 9 and 16 second for each epoch.

Machine learning research has been able to solve problems in multiple aspects. An open area of research is machine learning for solving optimisation problems. An optimisation problem can be solved using a metaheuristic algorithm, which is able to find a solution in a reasonable amount of time. However, there is a problem, the time required to find an appropriate metaheuristic algorithm, that would have the convenient configurations to solve a set of optimisation problems properly. A solution approach is shown here, using a proposal that automatically creates metaheuristic algorithms aided by a reinforced learning approach. Based on the experiments performed, the approach succeeded in creating a metaheuristic algorithm that managed to solve a large number of different continuous domain optimisation problems. This work's implications are immediate because they describe a basis for the generation of metaheuristic algorithms in real-time.

This study presents a modest attempt to interpret, formulate, and manipulate emotion of robots within the precepts of quantum mechanics. Our proposed framework encodes the emotion information as a superposition state whilst unitary operators are used to manipulate the transition of the emotion states which are recovered via appropriate quantum measurement operations. The framework described provides essential steps towards exploiting the potency of quantum mechanics in a quantum affective computing paradigm. Further, the emotions of multi-robots in a specified communication scenario are fused using quantum entanglement thereby reducing the number of qubits required to capture the emotion states of all the robots in the environment, and fewer quantum gates are needed to transform the emotion of all or part of the robots from one state to another. In addition to the mathematical rigours expected of the proposed framework, we present a few simulation-based demonstrations to illustrate its feasibility and effectiveness. This exposition is an important step in the transition of formulations of emotional intelligence to the quantum era.

Learning systems have been very focused on creating models that are capable of obtaining the best results in error metrics. Recently, the focus has shifted to improvement in order to interpret and explain their results. The need for interpretation is greater when these models are used to support decision making. In some areas this becomes an indispensable requirement, such as in medicine. This paper focuses on the prediction of cardiovascular disease by analyzing the well-known Statlog (Heart) Data Set from the UCI’s Automated Learning Repository. This study will analyze the cost of making predictions easier to interpret by reducing the number of features that explain the classification of health status versus the cost in accuracy. It will be analyzed on a large set of classification techniques and performance metrics. Demonstrating that it is possible to make explainable and reliable models that have a good commitment to predictive performance.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the second most common type of hematological disease and, although it is rare among patients under 40 years of age, its incidence rises in elderly subject. MM manifestations are usually known with the abbreviation CRAB (hyperCalcemia, Renal failure, Anaemia, and lytic Bone lesions). In particular, the extent of the bone disease is negatively related to a decreased patients’ quality of life and, in general, bone disease in MM increases both morbidity and mortality. The detection of lytic bone lesions on imaging, especially CT and MRI, is becoming crucial from the clinical viewpoint to separate asymptomatic from symptomatic MM patients and the detection of focal lytic lesion in these imaging data is becoming relevant even when no clinical symptoms are present. Therefore, radiology is pivotal in the staging and accurate management of patients with MM even in early phases of the disease. In this review we describe the opportunities offered by quantitative imaging and radiomics in multiple myeloma. At present time there is still high variability in the choice between various imaging methods to study MM patients and high variability in image interpretation with suboptimal agreement among readers even in tertiary centres. Therefore, the potential of medical imaging for patients affected by MM is still to be completely unveiled. In the next years, new insights to study MM with medical imaging will derive from artificial intelligence (AI) and radiomics usage in different bone lesions and from the wide implementations of quantitative methods to report CT and MRI. Eventually, medical imaging data can be integrated with the patient's outcomes with the purpose to find radiological biomarkers for predicting the disease prognostic flow and its therapeutic response.

The main parameters for calculation of relative humidity are the wet-bulb depression and dry bulb temperature. In this work, easy-to-used predictive tools based on statistical learning concepts, i.e., the Adaptive Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) are developed for calculating relative humidity in terms of wet bulb depression and dry bulb temperature. To evaluate the aforementioned models, some statistical analyses have been done between the actual and estimated data points. Results obtained from the present models showed their capabilities to calculate relative humidity for divers values of dry bulb temperatures and also wet-bulb depression. The obtained values of MSE and MRE were 0.132 and 0.931, 0.193 and 1.291 for the LSSVM and ANFIS approaches respectively. These developed tools are user-friend and can be of massive value for scientists especially, those dealing with air conditioning and wet cooling towers systems to have a noble check of the relative humidity in terms of wet bulb depression and dry bulb temperatures.

This paper investigates the use of deep learning techniques to perform energy demand forecasting. Specifically, the authors have adapted a deep neural network originally thought for image classification and composed of a convolutional neural network (CNN) followed by a multilayered fully connected artificial neural network (ANN). The convolutional part of the network was fed with a grid of temperature forecasting data distributed in the area of interest in order to extract a featured temperature. The subsequent ANN is then fed with this calculated temperature along with other data related to the timing of the forecast. The proposed structure was first trained and then used in a real setting aimed to provide the French energy demand forecast using ARPEGE forecasting weather data. The results show that the performance of this approach is in the line of the performance provided by the reference RTE subscription-based service, which opens the possibility to obtain high accuracy forecasting using widely accessible deep learning techniques through open-source machine learning platforms.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbroke in Wuhan has imposed a huge influence onto the society in term of the public heath and economy. However, so far, no effective drugs or vaccines have been developed. Whereas, the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been considered as a promising supplementary treatment for the disease owing to its clinically proven performance on many diseases even like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Meanwhile, many side-effect (SE) reports suggest the SE of the TCM prescriptions cannot be ignored in curing the COVID-19, especially because COVID-19 always simultaneously leads to dramatic degradation of the patients’ physical condition. How to evaluate the TCM regarding to their latent SE is a urgent challenge. Aim of the study: In this study, we use an ontology-based side-effect prediction framework (OSPF) developed in our previous work and Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based deep learning to evaluate the TCM prescriptions that are officially recommended in China for novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Materials and methods: Firstly, we adopted the OSPF developed in our previous work, where an ontology-based model separate all the ingredients in a TCM prescription into two categories: hot and cold. Then, we established a database by converting each TCM prescription into a vector containing the ingredient dosage and the according hot/cold attribution as well as the safe/unsafe label. And, we trained the ANN model using this database, after which a safety indicator (SI), as the complementary percentage of side-effect (SE) possibility, is then given for each TCM prescription. According to the proposed SI from high to low, we re-organize the recommended prescription list. Secondly, by using this method, we also evaluate the safety indicators of some other famous TCM prescriptions that are not in the recommended list but are used traditionally to cure flu-like diseases for extending the potential treatments. Results: Based on the SI generated in the ANN model, FTS, PMSP, and SF are the safest ones in recommended list, which all own a more-than-0.8 SI. Whereas, JHQG, LHQW, SFJD, XBJ, and SHL are the prescriptions that are most likely unsafe, where the indicators are all below 0.2. In the extra list, the indicators of XC, XQRS, CC, and CHBX are all above 0.8, and at the meantime, XZXS, SJ, QW, and KBD’s indicators are all below 0.2. Conclusions: In total, there are seven TCM prescriptions which own the indicators more than 0.8, suggesting these prescriptions should be considered firstly in curing COVID-19, if suitable. We believe this work will provide a reasonable suggestion for the society to choose proper TCM as the supplementary treatment for COVID-19. Besides, this work also introduces a pilot and enlightening method for creating a more reasonable recommendation list of TCM to other diseases.

As the problem of light pollution becomes more serious, more and more scholars pay attention to this issue and carry out related research. In the perspective of cities, the measurements of light pollution mainly focus on the brightness of the sky or artificial lighting on the ground. However, there is lack of research on the whole urban space. With the two-dimensional brightness analyses, this paper processes the changes of the light environment of the whole urban space into image quantization. It gets the 3D and 2D light environment changes of luminance distribution, color temperature distribution and chromaticity in the three space layers, the ground layer, the urban canopy layer and the sky layer, from dusk with natural light to night with artificial lighting completely. It is found that the brightness difference between the light environments among the three city levels gradually reduces with the measuring time, and the final values maintain at 0.11~0.25 cd/m². In the ground layer, the light environment is mainly affected by the lighting facilities, and vegetation can prevent the light from scattering up. The light environment of the urban canopy layer is the brightest in the whole city space and has the largest influence on the sky layer. The color concentrates in the range of yellow and red. The color temperature near the ground distributes in 3000K~15000K, and near the sky distributes in 2300K~2700K which is warmer than the natural night sky. The sky brightness of Dalian city is about 951 times than the natural night sky.

With the growing size and use of night lights time series from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day/Night Band (DNB), it is important to understand the stability of the dataset. All satellites observe differences in pixel values during repeat observations. In the case of night lights data, these changes can be due to both environmental effects and changes in light emission. Here we examine the stability of individual locations of particular large scale light sources (e.g. airports, prisons) in the monthly composites of DNB data from April 2012 to September 2017. The radiances for individual pixels of most large light emitters are approximately normally distributed, with a standard deviation of typically 15-20% of the mean. We observe geospatial autocorrelation in the monthly variations for nearby sites, while the correlation for sites separated by large distances is small. This suggests that local factors contribute most to the variation in the pixel radiances, and furthermore that averaging radiances over large areas will reduce the total variation. A better understanding of the causes of temporal variation would improve the sensitivity of DNB to lighting changes.

This paper is an interdisciplinary study of novel applications of techniques and tools of an area of brain science, known as Synesthesia (involving associations and/or confusion between distinct senses), to area of Computer Science known as Immersive Virtual Reality (VR), that makes the subject’s awareness of physical self be diminished by being surrounded in an engrossing artificial environment. Natural Synesthesia has for the last decade been an important emerging area in brain science but is present in only a small proportion of the population. For example a person with Natural Synesthesia, when viewing a grapheme, may perceive a color additionally to be associated to the grapheme. In contrast, Artificial synesthesia (also known as virtual synesthesia or synthetic synesthesia) has been defined as the sensory joining due a cross-modal mapping device, where information of one sense is accompanied by an induced perception in another sense. In particular, we propose use of a multimodal manner of displaying information in VR to increase and concentrate attention. Artificial Synesthesia to synthetically create induced associations between senses, allowing Artificial Synesthesia to be experienced by anyone using a VR system. The paper describes the enhancement of immersive VR by use of Artificial Synesthesia to improve the system’s performance at steering and directing the attention of the user. We describe techniques for an enhanced immersive VR that displays associations between a variety of senses: between colors and characters, also between colors and sounds, and between sounds and the position of tactile sensations. The sense association provided by Artificial Synesthesia allows the system to better capture the user’s attention and better direct that attention. A major application of our work in VR-induced Artificial Synesthesia is to provide an enhanced methodology for controlling the attention of the subject, and to improve the direction of attention of subjects undergoing guided imagery therapies for pain relief. Other potential high-impact applications include improved immersive VR, more programmable human/computer interfaces and other medical therapies.

In wild habitats, fruit dehiscence is a critical strategy for seed dispersal; however, in cultivated crops it is one of the major sources of yield loss. Therefore, indehiscence of fruits, pods, etc., was likely to be one of the first traits strongly selected in crop domestication. Even with the historical selection against dehiscence in early domesticates, it is a trait still targeted in many breeding programs, particularly in minor or underutilized crops. Here, we review of this trait in pulse (grain legume) crops, which are of growing importance as a source of protein in human and livestock diets, and which have received less attention than cereal crops and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We specifically focus on the i) history of indehiscence in domestication across legumes, ii) structures and the mechanisms involved in shattering, iii) the molecular pathways underlying this important trait, iv) an overview of the extent of crop losses due to shattering, and the effects of environmental factors on shattering, and, v) efforts to reduce shattering in crops. While our focus is mainly pulse crops, we also included comparisons to crucifers and cereals because there is extensive research on shattering in these taxa.

The main restriction of the Semantic Web is the difficult of the SPARQL language, that is necessary to extract information from the Knowledge Representation also known as ontology. Making the Semantic Web accessible for people who do not know SPARQL, is essential the use of friendlier interfaces and a good alternative is Natural Language. This paper shows the implementation of a friendly prototype interface to query and retrieve, by voice, information from website building with the Semantic Web tools. In that way, the end users avoid the complicated SPARQL language. To achieve this, the interface recognizes a speech query and converts it into text, it processes the text through a java program and identifies keywords, generates a SPARQL query, extracts the information from the website and read it in voice, for the user. In our work Google Cloud Speech API makes Speech-to-Text conversions and Text-to Speech conversions are made with SVOX Pico. As results, we have measured three variables: The success rate in queries, the response time of query and a usability survey. The values of the variables allows the evaluation of our prototype. Finally the interface proposed provides us a new approach in the problem, using the Cloud like a Service, reducing barriers of access to the Semantic Web for people without technical knowledge of Semantic Web technologies.

Many dioecious plants have sex chromosomes that are cytologically heteromorphic, but about half of species lack cytological differences between males and females and are thus homomorphic. Very little is known about the size and content of the non-recombining sex-determining region (SDR) in these species. Here, we assess the size and content of the SDR of the diploid dioecious herb Mercurialis annua, which has homomorphic sex chromosomes and shows signatures of mild Y-chromosome degeneration. We used RNAseq to identify new Y-linked markers for M. annua. Twelve of 24 transcripts with male-specific and male-biased expression could only be PCR-amplified from males and are thus Y-linked. We found a further six Y-linked sequences that were present in males but not females using genome capture data from multiple populations. We used the Y-linked sequences to identify and sequence 17 sex-linked bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs), which form 11 groups of non-overlapping sequence, covering a total sequence length of about 1.5 Mb. Content analysis of this region suggests it is enriched for repeats, has a low gene density and contains few candidate sex-determining genes. The BACs map to a subset of the sex-linked region of the genetic map, which is estimated to be at least 14.5 Mb. This is substantially larger than estimates for other dioecious plants with homomorphic sex chromosomes, especially given the small genome size of M. annua. Our data provide a rare, high-resolution view of the homomorphic Y chromosome of a dioecious plant.

In this work, we studied light-output properties, efficiency function as well as PSD capability of p-Terphenyl scintillator. The selected solid cylindrical scintillation detector has a size of (45 x 45) mm with PSD properties. Recently presented studies of light-output functions have been meas-ured only for low neutron energies. Our motivation has been to determine more accurate the light output function for p-Terphenyl scintillator over a wider neutron energy range. The measurements have been carried out with mono-energetic neutron beams in the wide energy range from 2.5 to 19 MeV. The neutron-gamma spectrometric system, which we developed has been used for the measurement. The input analogue signal from the detector is digitized with fast 12-bits analogue to digital converter with sampling frequency of 1 GHz. Measured data from the detector are processed into gamma and neutron spectra. The light output function for protons has been determined by finding the position of the protons for given neutron energies. The more accurate light output function for p-Therphenyl scintillator has been calculated. The pulse-shape discrimination capability as well as efficiency of p-Terphenyl scintillator in comparison with NE-213 equivalent detector is lower.

Silica aerogels and their derivatives have outstanding thermal properties with exceptional values in the thermal insulation industry. However, the brittle nature restricts its large-scale commercialization. Thus, enhancing their mechanical strength without affecting their thermal insulating properties is essential. Therefore, for the first time, highly thermally stable Poly(acrylamide-Co-acrylic acid) partial sodium salt is used as a reinforcing polymer to synthesize hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-silica aerogels via epoxy ring-opening polymerization in the present study. Functional groups in P(AAm-CO-AAc) partial sodium salts, such as CONH2 and COOH, acted as nucleophiles for the epoxy ring-opening reaction with (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane, which resulted in a seven-fold enhancement in mechanical strength compared to that of a pristine silica aerogel while maintaining the thermal conductivity at less than 30.6 mW/mK and porosity of more than 93.68%. Moreover, the hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-silica aerogel demonstrated improved thermal stability up to 343 ⁰C owing to the synergetic effect between P(AAm-CO-AAc) and the silica aerogel, corresponding to thermal stability and strong covalent bonding among them. These excellent results illustrate that this new synthetic approach for producing hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-silica aerogels is useful for enhancing the mechanical strength of a pristine silica aerogel without impairing its thermal insulating property and shows potential as an industrial heat insulation material.

In this paper, a study of modeling PV cell (solar cell), PV module (solar modules) and PV array solar array) using Matlab/Simulink software is presented. This study is focused on the study to design photovoltaic cell, photovoltaic modules, photovoltaic panels and PV array (solar array) and to analyze the change in PV performance according to changes in different parameters such temperature, solar irradiation, reverse saturation current, series resistance and shunt resistance. This study shows the PV and IV characteristics curve for each model from which MPP (maximum power point) is determined. In this study, different PV and IV characteristic curves are gained for varying temperatures with specified solar irradiation conditions,s and then the MPP is tracked. The highest power output is also compared between the designed PV module and the selected PV module (MX Solar USA MX60-245)

The main goal of the present paper is to construct some families of the Carlitz’s q-Bernoulli polynomials and numbers. We firstly introduce the modified Carlitz’s q-Bernoulli polynomials and numbers with weight (α, β) and investigate their some explicit properties and identities arising from the bosonic q-Volkenborn integral on ℤ_p. We then define the modified degenerate Carlitz’s q-Bernoulli polynomials and numbers with weight (α, β) and obtain some recurrence relations and other identities. Moreover, we derive some correlations with the modified Carlitz’s q-Bernoulli polynomials with weight (α, β), the modified degenerate Carlitz’s q-Bernoulli polynomials with weight (α, β), the Stirling numbers of the first kind and second kind.

The integration of artificial intelligence, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), has the potential to significantly enhance therapeutic decision-making in clinical oncology. Initial studies across various disciplines have demonstrated that LLM based treatment recommendations can rival those of multidisciplinary tumor boards (MTBs); however, such data are currently lacking for urological cancers. This study provides the methodological foundation for the prospective CONCORDIA trial, which will generate this data for the first time. In this preliminary work, we evaluated the proposed measurement tool for the CONCORDIA study -the System-Causability-Scale (SCS) and its modified version (mSCS) - based on recommendations from ChatGPT-4 and an MTB for 40 urological cancer-scenarios. Both scales demonstrated strong validity, reliability (all aggregated Cohen’s K &gt; 0.74), and internal consistency (all Cronbach’s Alpha &gt; 0.9), with the mSCS showing superior reliability, internal consistency, and clinical applicability (p&lt;0.01). Two Delphi processes were used to define the LLMs to be tested in the CONCORDIA study (ChatGPT-4 and Claude 3.5 Sonnet) and to establish the acceptable non-inferiority margin for LLM recommendations compared to MTB recommendations. The forthcoming ethics-approved and registered CONCORDIA non-inferiority trial will require 110 urological cancer scenarios, with an mSCS difference threshold of 0.15, a Bonferroni corrected alpha of 0.025, and a beta of 0.1. Blinded mSCS assessments of MTB recommendations will then be compared to those of the LLMs. In summary, this work establishes the necessary prerequisites prior to initiating the CONCORDIA study and validates a modified score with high applicability and reliability for this and future trials.

Epigenetic mechanisms, including histone post-translational modifications (PTMs), play a critical role in regulating pain perception and the pathophysiology of burn injury. However, the epigenetic regulation and molecular mechanisms underlying burn injury-induced pain remain insufficiently explored. Spinal dynorphinergic (Pdyn) neurons contribute to heat hyperalgesia induced by severe scalding-type burn injury through p-S10H3-dependent signaling. Beyond p-S10H3, burn injury may impact various other histone H3 PTMs. Double immunofluorescent staining and histone H3 protein analyses demonstrated significant hypermethylation at H3K4me1 and H3K4me3 sites and hyperphosphorylation at S10H3 within the spinal cord. By analyzing Pdyn neurons in the spinal dorsal horn, we found evidence of chromatin activation with a significant elevation in p-S10H3 immunoreactivity. We used RNA-seq analysis to compare the effects of burn injury and forma-lin-induced inflammatory pain on spinal cord transcriptomic profiles. We identified 98 DEGs for burn injury and 86 DEGs for formalin-induced inflammatory pain. A limited number of shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) suggest distinct central pain processing mechanisms between burn injury and formalin models. KEGG pathway analysis supported this divergence, with burn injury activating Wnt signaling. This study enhances our understanding of burn injury mechanisms and uncovers converging and diverging pathways in pain models with different origins.

Alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (AMPT; also referred as metyrosine) is an approved medication for the treatment of pheochromocytoma. As a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor AMPT may be a potential candidate for the treatment of diseases involving catecholamine alterations. However, only small-scale clinical trials have tested AMPT repurposing in few other illnesses. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is an heterogenous disorder with genetically associated vulnerability of catecholamine metabolism (e.g. catechol O-methyltransferase polymorphisms) holding an important impact of environmental factors. The current case report compiles genetic and longitudinal biochemical data for over a year follow-up of one patient sequentially diagnosed with sustained overstress, neurasthenia, CFS, and POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) over a 10-year period, and reports patient’s symptom improvement in response to low-medium doses of AMPT.

Motivated by Kurt's work [Filomat 30 (4) 921-927, 2016], we first consider a class of a new generating function for (p, q)-analog of Apostol type polynomials of order a including Apostol-Bernoulli, Apostol-Euler and Apostol-Genocchi polynomials of order a. By making use of their generating function, we derive some useful identities. We also introduce (p, q)-analog of Stirling numbers of second kind of order v by which we construct a relation including aforementioned polynomials.

This paper presents the development of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for the generation of synthetic dental panoramic radiographs to address the scarcity of data in dental research and education. A Deep Convolutional GAN (DCGAN) with Wasserstein Loss and Gradient Penalty (WGAN-GP) was trained on a dataset of 2322 radiographs of varying quality. The focus for this study was on the dentoalveolar part of the radiographs; other structures were cropped out. Significant data cleaning and preprocessing was conducted to standardize input formats while maintaining anatomical variability. Four candidate models were identified by varying the critic iterations, number of features and the use of denoising prior to training. To assess the quality of the generated images, a clinical expert evaluated generated synthetic radiographs using a ranking system based on visibility and realism from 1 (Very Poor) to 5 (Excellent). It was found that most generated radiographs showed moderate depictions of dentoalveolar anatomical structures, although they were considerably impaired by artifacts. After averaging evaluation scores, a trade-off was observed between the model trained on non-denoised data, which showed the highest subjective quality for finer structures such as the Mandibular Canal and Trabecular Bone, and one of the models trained on denoised data, which offered better overall image quality, especially for Clarity &amp; Sharpness, and Overall Realism. The outcome serves as a foundation for further research into GAN architectures for dental applications. The Bridge Health Index (BHI) serves as an essential tool for assessing the structural and functional condition of bridges, calculated based on the condition of structural components and the serviceability of the bridge. Its primary purpose is to identify the most deteriorated structures in an asset inventory and prioritize those in most urgent need of repair. However, a frequently cited issue is the lack of accurate and objective data, with the determination of BHI often heavily reliant on expert opinions and engineering judgment. Furthermore, the BHI systems used in most countries are dependent on the current state of bridge components, making it challenging to use as a proactive indicator for factors such as the rate of bridge aging. To address this issue, this study introduces a novel BHI as a quantitative evaluation metric for reinforced concrete slab bridges and details the process of deriving the BHI based on deterioration models. The deterioration models are derived by preprocessing the deterioration data of reinforced concrete (RC) slab bridges, wherein the relationship between time and deterioration is directly employed for training a long short-term memory model. The BHI was validated through a case study involving six RC-slab bridges, wherein accuracies of &gt;93% were achieved, confirming that the proposed quantitative evaluation methodology can significantly contribute to maintenance decisions for bridges.

Big data-driven machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) is not all computational social sciences (CSS) have. Agent-based modeling (ABM) or multi-agent system (MAS) is another fundamentally different but equally useful approach in CSS. In fact, the two approaches start from very different orientations and their differences have deeper root in ontology. ML/AI aims to imitate and then surpass human capacities, from sensing to perceiving, reasoning, calculating, and acting. In contrast, ABM seeks to simulate how social outcomes emerge from the complex interactions of agents’ actions within a specific environment. Yet, precisely because these two technologies are different, they can be complementary to each other. There is a bright future for integrating ABM with ML/AI for tackling real world challenges.

Service quality has been one of the most significant concepts in marketing literature over the last two decades, empirically linked with customer satisfaction and long-term sustainability for businesses. The purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive review of the evolution of marketing-related articles in service quality and development. The review synthesis has shown that the Grönroos and SERVQUAL were some of the earliest service quality models to broaden intangibles within services and homogenise user experience outcomes between industries. Service quality research has evolved with technological evolution and digitalisation, which has changed customer experience parameters and created new dimensions. New-age digital trends dictate high-quality services based on personalisation, customisation habits, and the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Customer preferences and loyalty have more to do with sustainability and ethical con-siderations. The service quality concept implications include the drivers of value co-creation and which emerging technologies could inform how services are delivered to customers. The review also highlights some challenges and opportunities for service quality research, including new frontiers that consider the interaction between humans and machines and social infrastructure and physical environment contexts in which services are delivered. To address the issue of the lack of an integrated perspective, this study utilises findings from the literature, particularly those emphasising human-AI interactions. The study's implication is to give a more complete theoretical framework of service quality and to combine findings from different points of view. This will give practitioners more leverage to implement service-level strategies in changing market conditions.

This study discussion point of this paper is to make an in-depth analysis of the development impact of the Internet of Things combined with edge computing and artificial intelligence. In the analysis process, the importance and criticality of data processing and decision making of edge computing as well as the challenges faced should be elaborated respectively. With the rapid popularization and development of Internet of Things devices, edge computing has brought more innovative solutions for different application scenarios such as intelligent furniture industrialization, automatic driving and intelligent transportation by reducing the delay of processing data and improving the characteristics of security data, film and television. Resource and energy efficiency have certain limitations, so it is necessary to combine artificial intelligence to enhance edge computing devices, hardware accelerators, and its utility and federated learning technologies, which can effectively improve the performance and scalability of edge computing and promote the development of more self-service network systems for smart devices. The core of this study is how to promote the Internet through AI-driven edge computing to further develop and provide insights for research priorities and suggest related future research directions.

Anxiety-based cognitive distortions pertaining to somatic perception (ABCD-SPs)—primarily catastrophizing, fear avoidance, and kinesiophobia—have been repeatedly linked to worsening chronic, non-cancer pain (CNCP) outcomes of increased disability, amplified pain, ineffective opioid use, and opioid misuse. Several studies have suggested that treating ABCD-SPs can improve pain outcomes, yet identification and targeting of ABCD-SPs are not part of the standard medical pain assessment and treatment plan. Utilizing a narrative review of proposed mechanisms, published patient perspectives, and study correlations connecting these cognitive distortions with CNCP outcomes, an approach for better practice in the delivery of standard medical CNCP care can be deduced and formulated into a Belief and Behavior Action Plan (BBAP) for medical clinicians treating CNCP to implement into initial and maintenance care planning. These recommendations require relatively few resources to implement and have the potential to disseminate more effective CNCP treatment on a large scale now and in the future with the new frontier of cognitive computing in medicine.

Remote sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide significant opportunities for monitoring and managing natural resources across various temporal, spectral, and spatial resolutions. There is a critical need for natural resource managers to understand the expanding capabilities of image sources, analysis techniques, and in-situ validation methods. This article reviews a range of image analysis tools applicable to natural resource management, including agriculture, water, forests, soil, and natural hazards, and compares their functionalities. Our study highlights that Google Earth Engine (GEE) is favored for wide-area analysis due to its extensive coverage and free access. Global Mapper excels in 3D and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data, environment for visualizing images (ENVI) specializes in multi- and hyperspectral image processing, ERDAS IMAGINE is optimal for radar data, and eCognition is used for object-based image analysis. The article emphasizes the importance of in-situ validation data, which provides essential ground truth information to calibrate and validate RS models, thereby enhancing accuracy. Understanding these tools and integrating them with in-situ validation techniques enables natural resource managers to improve their monitoring and decision-making processes, facilitating effective collaboration with RS researchers.

This article describes a new application of the global optimization method HQF ASA to the investigation of the Riemann hypothesis, in the sense of searching for zeros of the Riemann zeta function ζ outside the critical line but inside the (open) subset of the critical strip ((0,1/2)∪(1/2,1))×(−∞,∞). The underlying idea is very simple: a complex root r of a given complex function f : C → C must satisfy the condition ||f(r)|| = 0, that is, f(r) must have 2-dimensional Eu- clidean norm equal to 0, considering r as a point of R2. In the opposite direction, for any r ∈ C, ||f(r)|| = 0 implies f(r) = 0 and r is a root of f. Focusing again on the Riemann zeta function ζ, the open and simply connected region Rc = (1/2,1)×(0,∞) is used along the text, taking into account the symmetries of zeros of ζ in the critical strip. In this fashion, finding a global optimizer for ||ζ|| is equivalent to finding a root of ζ. Therefore, and taking into account the well-known efficacy of HQF ASA, a good sign of the trueness of RH would be not finding global minima in several optimization sessions with expanding subsets of Rc. In practical terms, several optimization sessions are executed using QMF ASA with increasing subsets of Rc, searching for global minima of ||ζ||. After presenting numerical results and figures, the adequacy of the proposed approach as a tool for preliminary empirical analysis for this type of problem is discussed.

AI-driven analysis of reaction parameters, optical properties, and structural characteristics enables real-time monitoring and adaptive optimization of photochemical reactions.The developed framework utilizes deep learning techniques to correlate reaction conditions with nanoparticle size, shape, and composition, facilitating the synthesis of tailored nanoparticles for various applications. Results show improved monodispersity, increased yield, and reduced synthesis time compared to traditional methods.This innovative approach paves the way for the rapid development of high-performance nanoparticles in fields such as biomedical imaging, energy storage, and catalysis. By harnessing the power of AI in information technology, this research unlocks new possibilities for the precise and efficient synthesis of nanoparticles via photochemical methods.

The proliferation of intelligent monitoring devices has led to the widespread adoption of background extraction technology across a multitude of domains, including intelligent transportation, video surveillance, human-computer interaction, and medical diagnosis. In this work, the model employs a multi-layer convolutional neural network structure, which enables the extraction and fusion of scene features from different scales in a layer-by-layer manner. This approach facilitates the comprehensive capture of complex scene information. The convolutional network comprises multiple layers, with each layer responsible for extracting features at a specific scale. The shallower layers capture more detailed feature information, whereas the deeper layers focus on more global scene features. The strategy of multi-scale feature fusion allows the model to fully capture multi-level and multi-dimensional information in the context of large-scale scenes. Furthermore, the incorporation of an attention mechanism enables the model to adaptively allocate attention to salient regions, thereby enhancing its capacity to discern intricate scenes by assigning greater significance to pivotal features. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in practice, as evidenced by its performance on public datasets.

In the face of increasing environmental protection requirements, modeling emissions from older vehicles presents a significant challenge. This paper introduces an innovative methodology for developing emission models for older vehicles by employing advanced AI and machine learning techniques. The study utilized algorithms, including gradient boosting, to analyze data from road tests and the OBDII diagnostic interface, allowing the creation of precise models for CO₂, CO, THC and NOx emissions. A key achievement is the implementation of input data clustering, which significantly enhances the accuracy of emission forecasts. Model validation demonstrated high precision, with notable R² coefficients and mean squared errors. The developed models serve as a crucial tool for analyzing and managing emissions in the context of an aging vehicle fleet, providing new opportunities to shape transportation policy and strategies for pollution reduction.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming integral to medical practice, potentially enhancing outcomes in thoracic surgery. AI-driven models have shown significant accuracy in diagnosing non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), predicting lymph node metastasis, and aiding in the efficient extraction of electronic medical records (EMR) data. Moreover, AI applications in robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) and perioperative management reveal potential in improving surgical precision, patient safety, and overall care efficiency. Despite these advancements, challenges such as data privacy, biases, and ethical concerns remain. This manuscript explores AI applications, particularly machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP), in thoracic surgery, emphasizing their role in diagnosis and peri-operative management. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the current state, benefits, and limitations of AI in thoracic surgery, highlighting future directions in the field.

Artificial intelligence has garnered significant attention in recent years as a rapidly advancing field of computer technology. With the continual advancement of computer hardware, deep learning has made breakthrough developments within the realm of artificial intelligence. Over the past few years, applying deep learning architecture in medicine and Industrial anomaly inspection has significantly contributed to solving numerous challenges related to efficiency and accuracy. Despite excellent results in radiological, pathological, endoscopic, ultrasonic, and biochemical examinations, this paper utilizes deep learning combined with image processing to identify spinal canal and vertebral foramen dimensions. In existing research, technologies such as corrosion and expansion in magnetic resonance image (MRI) processing have also strengthening the accuracy of results. Indicators such as area and Intersection over Union (IoU)are also provided for assessment. Among them, the mean average precision (mAP), for identifying intervertebral foramen (IVF) and intervertebral disc (IVD) through YOLOv4 is 95.6%. Resnet50 mixing U-Net was employed to identify the spinal canal and intervertebral foramen and achieved IoU scores of 79.11% and 80.89%.

Real time condition monitoring and precision health assessment system is a mandatory need for effective maintenance program in industrial sector. Rapid advancement in the information technology and other engineering technologies have invited more proactive attention from research and development in industrial sectors and particularly in condition monitoring of machines and related Industrial processes. In this work, drill bit condition monitoring techniques have been developed based on wavelet analysis and artificial neural networks (ANN) for automatic drill bit fault detection and classification. An experimental work has been conducted to capture the vibration signals for analysis. In this experiment, the CNC drill machine is used with high carbon steel drill bit and mild steel material as work piece. The cutting condition parameters are kept constant and the wear level is varied from 0.2 to 0.6 mm. The Data Acquisition system (DAQ) with Lab VIEW software is used to capture the vibration signals for drill bit with different wear conditions using accelerometer. The captured vibrations data are analyzed using continuous wavelet transform (CWT) with Morlet wavelet and Daubechies wavelet as a prime function. In general, the CWT coefficient is used to generate the inputs features to ANN for automatic tool condition classification, with two outputs (0, 1) for healthy and (1, 0) for faulty. The outcome of ANN showed 98% of accuracy in the wear prediction and this results show the effectiveness of the combed WT and ANN for automatic classification of tool wear conditions with high success rate.

Clustering is a very common analysis of data present in large datasets, with the aims of understanding and summarizing data, and discovering similarities, among others. However, despite the present success of subsymbolic methods for data clustering, the description of the obtained clusters cannot rely on the intricacies of the subsymbolic processing. For clusters of data expressed in the Resource Description Framework (RDF) we extend and implement an optimized previously proposed logic-based methodology which computed an RDF structure — called a Common Subsumer — describing the commonalities among all resources. We tested our implementation with two open, and very different RDF datasets: one devoted to Public Procurement, and the other devoted to drugs in Pharmacology. For both datasets, we were able to provide reasonably concise and readable descriptions of clusters up to 1800 resources. Our analysis shows the viability of our methodology and computation, and paves the way for general cluster explanations to lay users.

False news refers to false, fake, or misleading information presented as real news. In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in false news on the Internet. The goal of this paper was to study the automatic detection of such false news using machine learning and natural language processing techniques and to determine which techniques work the most effectively. This article first studies what constitutes false news, and how it differs from other types of misleading information. We also study the results achieved by other researchers on the same topic. After building a foundation to understand false news, and the various ways of automatically detecting it, this article provides its own experiments. These experiments were done on four different datasets, one that was made just for this article, and using 10 different machine learning methods. The results of this article were satisfactory and provided answers to the original research questions set up at the beginning of this article. This article could determine from the experiments that passive-aggressive algorithms, support vector machines, and random forests are the most efficient methods for automatic false news detection. This article also concluded that more complex experiments, such as using multiple levels of identifying false news or detecting computer-generated false news, require more complex machine learning models.

The two combined technologies WPT and AI still have huge prospects for several industries such as consumer electronics and industry. This paper looks at the recent developments in WPT, particularly concerning AI-improved efficiency, range, and reliability. AI-driven also works to control power, manage device alignment, and test when maintenance is necessary, this makes powering smarter and more efficient. Accuracy is given by deploying machine learning and computer vision, and on the other hand, the maintenance procedure is done through predictions. Furthermore, the ability of the management system to include the use of AI in power regulation enables the control of consumption based on the load. In this study, the positive future effect of AI is discussed concerning improvements in WPT technologies, which is paramount in subsequent applications. Based on the results, it is essential to continue the investigation of the topic within this interdisciplinary science to advance existing problems and discover novel possibilities for evolution. Data based on experiments shows a significant improvement in the efficiency of information transfer where AI is used with rates up to 25% higher than those using the traditional ways. Additionally, advanced maintenance forecasting algorithms improve system availability by cutting down on 30% of the downtimes when applied in real-life applications of AI technology. The study also looks at the possibilities of the outlook to the future including emergence of the distributed artificial intelligence for autonomous WPT network, and additional potential of quantum computing for the use to improve the algorithm. This indicates that there is a new era for the convergence of WPT and AI to enhance the progress of power transfer system in conditions of elegant, efficient, and robust.

The symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) are determined by the location of demyelinating lesions in the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most common tool for diagnosing MS, understanding the course of the disease, and analyzing the effects of treatments. However, undesirable components may appear during the generation of MRI, such as noise or intensity variations. Mathematical morphology (MM) is a powerful image analysis technique that helps to filter the image and extract relevant structures. Granulometry is an image measurement tool of MM that determines the size distribution of objects in an image without explicitly segmenting each object. While, several methods have been proposed for the automatic segmentation of MS lesions in MRI, in some cases only simple data preprocessing, such as image resizing to standardize the input dimensions, has been performed before the algorithm training. Therefore, this paper proposes an MRI preprocessing algorithm performing elementary morphological transformations in brain images of MS patients and healthy individuals to delete undesirable components and extract the relevant structures such as MS lesions. Also, the algorithm computes the granulometry in MRI to describe the size qualities of lesions and trains two artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict MS diagnosis. The computing of differences in granulometry measurements of an image with MS lesions and a reference image (without lesions) can determine the size characterization of the lesions. Then, the ANNs were evaluated with the validation set and the performance results (test accuracy = 0.9753, and cross-entropy loss = 0.0247) show the proposed algorithm can support the decision of specialists for diagnosing MS and estimating the disease progress, based on granulometry values.

Anthropogenic lighting elicits positive phototaxis responses (i.e., attraction) in birds, insects, and many other species across ecosystems. Impacts from lights in marine systems are poorly understood, despite evidence that vessel lighting can cause seabird disorientation and collisions, potentially leading to injury or mortality. The level of attraction generated by different types of lighting, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), is also not well understood in most seabirds. Using fairy prions (Pachyptila turtur), a species showing strong positive phototaxis particularly to artificial lights on vessels, we investigated the effects of LED colour and lumen output at a colony during the breeding season. We used six random treatment groups (control (dark), red light, amber low lumen, amber high lumen, white low lumen, and white high lumen) and measured attraction and disorientation. Data was analysed using generalised linear mixed-effects models while accounting for environmental variables. Results showed that the control (“dark”) and red light attracted fewest birds, and attraction/disorientation did not differ between these. Medium responses were elicited by amber low/high and white low, while white high lumen induced the highest abundance and attraction/disorientation response. These results agreed with our desktop study, which predicted response rankings based on each light treatment’s colour spectrum and lumen output and a related species’ spectral response. Furthermore, time of night increased bird counts, as did higher humidity, increased moon illumination, and reduced moon visibility. Our data highlight the need to consider LED colour, lumen output, and time of night to reduce anthropogenic lighting impacts on land and at sea.

Background: Despite recent advancements, medical technology has not yet reached its peak. Precision medicine is growing rapidly, thanks to machine learning breakthroughs powered by increased computational capabilities. This article explores a deep-learning application for computer-aided diagnosis in dermatology. Methods: Using a custom model based on EfficientNetB3 and deep learning, we propose an approach for skin lesion classification that offers superior results with smaller, cheaper, and faster inference times compared to other models. The skin images dataset used for this research includes 8,222 files selected from the authors' collection and the ISIC2019 archive, covering six dermatological conditions. Results: The model achieved 95.4% validation accuracy on four categories—melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, benign keratosis-like lesions, and melanocytic nevi—using an average of 1,600 images per category. Adding two categories with fewer images (about 700 each)—squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratoses—reduced the validation accuracy to 88.8%. The model maintained accuracy on new clinical test images taken under the same conditions as the training dataset. Conclusions: The custom model demonstrated excellent performance on the diverse skin lesions dataset, with significant potential for further enhancements.
