The recent advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) tools has had a pervasive effect on every sphere of human existence. Libraries and information centres are not immune to these technological advances. These disruptive technologies have transformed the traditional face of libraries and their operations. There are many available AI tools, for example, chatbots, literature review tools, plagiarism detection tools, and several other developments in the field that have perhaps made the functioning of libraries easier. However, there is growing concern and uncertainty among both traditional library and modern professionals regarding the possible job loss and security issues related to these new technologies, which the professionals must deal with. Librarians and information professionals must be ready to handle the unforeseen situation. However, it is to be observed how libraries cope with these uncertainties, and threats to the integrity, availability of data, and normal library housekeeping functions.

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) progression metrics indicate AGI will occur within decades. No proof exists that AGI will benefit humans and not harm or eliminate humans. I propose a set of logically distinct conceptual components that are necessary and sufficient to 1) ensure various AGI scenarios will not harm humanity and 2) robustly align AGI and human values and goals. By systematically addressing pathways to malevolent AI we can induce the methods/axioms required to redress them. Distributed ledger technology (DLT, ‘blockchain’) is integral to this proposal, e.g. ‘smart contracts’ are necessary to address evolution of AI that will be too fast for human monitoring and intervention. The proposed axioms: 1) Access to technology by market license. 2) Transparent ethics embodied in DLT. 3) Morality encrypted via DLT. 4) Behavior control structure with values at roots. 5) Individual bar-code identification of critical components. 6) Configuration Item (from business continuity/disaster recovery planning). 7) Identity verification secured via DLT. 8) ‘Smart’ automated contracts based on DLT. 9) Decentralized applications - AI software modules encrypted via DLT. 10) Audit trail of component usage stored via DLT. 11) Social ostracism (denial of resources) augmented by DLT petitions. 12) Game theory and mechanism design.

(1) Background: The study aimed to analyze and rank the benefits of adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the logistics area, considering the opinion of professionals working in the Brazilian logistics sector through the implementation of ISO/IEC 42001; (2) Methods: The procedures adopted included a literature review to identify the benefits of the use and the application of a survey aimed at professionals in the logistics sector. The analysis used the TOPSIS method to identify and rank the most decisive benefits; (3) Results: Of the 15 benefits mapped in the literature, the professionals attributed the greatest importance to customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, incentives for innovation, and improving the company's image and competitive advantage. The results indicate that adopting ISO/IEC 42001 not only promotes process optimization and cost reduction, but also encourages innovation and strengthens competitiveness in the market; (4) Conclusions: the implementation of this standard is vital for companies in the logistics sector, especially in a Brazilian context of major infrastructural and regulatory challenges. The findings highlight the need for a strategic approach to the adoption of AI, emphasizing the importance of efficient logistics management and ethical practices in the application of this technology.

Objectives: Few studies have evaluated and compared artificial intelligence (AI) models for breast cancer detection on the same database. The purpose is to compare the performances of 3 artificial intelligence algorithms on the same dataset at a free operative threshold and to evaluate how the performance is impacted by the chosen threshold. Materials: In this retrospective single-center study, a dataset of 314 2D screening mammograms performed between 2012 and 2020 was established with a prevalence of 19.6% of histologically proven cancer. Three AI constructors using CE (European conformity) marking algorithms have agreed to take part in the study by submitting the cancer-enriched cohort to their algorithm. They chose a free operative threshold to distinguish benign and malignant mammograms. The most suspicious lesion was marked and correctly located by the AI algorithm. Statistical parameters were analyzed and compared between the algorithms. Results: Regarding both sensitivity and specificity, at the chosen threshold, AI 1 had the best compromise between sensitivity (74%) and specificity (79%). AI 2 had a statistically lower sensitivity (52%; p<0.05) with a higher specificity (98.4%) than the other AI algorithms. AI 3 had a nonsignificant sensitivity difference (69.9%) but a significantly lower specificity (45.3%; p<0.001) than the other two. The performances varied depending on the chosen threshold; when the AI 2 threshold was lowered, the sensitivity increased (69.9%), while a higher specificity (86.1%) was maintained. Conclusion: Two AI algorithms stood out in terms of performance when the threshold was optimized, resulting in an acceptable sensitivity and specificity.

Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based algorithms have revolutionized the medical image segmentation processes. Thus, the precise segmentation of organs and their lesions may contribute to an efficient diagnostics process and a more effective selection of targeted therapies as well as increasing the effectiveness of the training process. Thus, AI may contribute to the automatization of the image scan segmentation process and increase the quality of the resulting 3D objects, which may lead to the generation of more realistic virtual objects. In this paper, we focus on the AI-based solutions applied in the medical image scan segmentation, and intelligent visual-content generation, i.e. computer-generated three-dimensional (3D) images in the context of Extended Reality (XR). We consider different types of neural networks used with a special emphasis on the learning rules applied, taking into account algorithm accuracy and performance, as well as open data availability. This paper also attempts to summarize the current development of AI-based segmentation methods in medical imaging and intelligent visual content generation that are applied in XR. Finally, this paper concludes with possible developments and open challenges in AI application in Extended Reality-based solutions. Finally, the future lines of research and development directions of Artificial Intelligence applications both in medical image segmentation and Extended reality-based medical solutions are discussed.

The potential of digital twin technology is yet to be fully realised due to its diversity and untapped potential. Digital twins enable systems’ analysis, design, optimisation, and evolution to be performed digitally or in conjunction with a cyber-physical approach to improve speed, accuracy, and efficiency over traditional engineering methods. Industry 4.0, factories of the future, and digital twins continue to benefit from the technology and provide enhanced efficiency within existing systems. Due to the lack of information and security standards associated with the transition to cyber digitisation, cybercriminals have been able to take advantage of the situation. Access to a digital twin of a product or service is equivalent to threatening the entire collection. There is a robust interaction between digital twins and artificial intelligence tools, which leads to strong interaction between these technologies, so it can be used to improve the cybersecurity of these digital platforms based on their integration with these technologies. This study aims to investigate the role of artificial intelligence in providing cybersecurity for digital twin versions of various industries, as well as the risks associated with these versions. In addition, this research serves as a road map for researchers and others interested in cybersecurity and digital security.

The number of applications for nanobodies is steadily expanding, positioning these molecules as fast-growing biologic products in the biotechnology market. Several of their applications require protein engineering, which in turn would greatly benefit from having a reliable structural model of the nanobody of interest. However, as with antibodies, structural modeling of nanobodies is still a challenge. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), several methods have been developed in recent years that attempt to solve the problem of protein modeling. In this study, we have compared the performance in nanobody modeling of several state-of-the-art AI-based programs, either designed for general protein modeling, such as AlphaFold2, OmegaFold, ESMFold and Yang-Server, or specifically designed for antibody modeling, such as IgFold, and Nanonet. While all these programs performed rather well in constructing the nanobody framework and CDRs 1 and 2, modeling of CDR3 sill represents a big challenge. Interestingly, tailoring an AI method for antibody modeling does not necessarily translate into better results for nanobodies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen increased application and widespread adoption over the past decade despite, at times, offering a limited understanding of its inner working. AI algorithms are, in large part, built on weights, and these weights are calculated as a result of large matrix multiplications. Computationally intensive processes are typically harder to interpret. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to solve this black box approach through the use of various techniques and tools. In this study, XAI techniques are applied to chronic wound classification. The proposed model classifies chronic wounds through the use of transfer learning and fully connected layers. Classified chronic wound images serve as input to the XAI model for an explanation. Interpretable results can help shed new perspectives to clinicians during the diagnostic phase. The proposed method successfully provides chronic wound classification and its associated explanation. This hybrid approach is shown to aid with the interpretation and understanding of AI decision-making processes.

The growing usage of Generative AI tools in scientific writing requires a critical examination of their benefits and challenges. This literature review is aimed at comprehensively analyzing current empirical research articles focused on the application of Generative AI in scientific writing. The Google Scholar database was used to search for the literature. The following keywords were used: "Generative AI" and "academic writing", "LLM" (Large Language Models) and "academic writing", "Generative AI" and "Scientific writing", and "ChatGPT" and "Scientific Writing". The search was restricted to articles published between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024. 15 articles were selected as appropriate for the study and analyzed. It was found that, thus far, ChatGPT is the most exploited tool in the studies. AI tools such as Bard (Gemini), Bing, Claude2, and Elicit were also tested. The benefits of Generative AI usage in scientific writing were found to be omnipresent. It can aid in the generation of structured abstracts, titles, introductions, literature reviews, and conclusions of a scientific article. Generative AI also makes writing more efficient and time-saving. Its capabilities in improving language and proofreading are well-established. However, the generation of inaccurate content and references by current commercially available LLMs poses a serious problem. The lack of critical thinking and tendency to produce non-original content are significant drawbacks. Generative AI should be employed with human oversight, serving as an assistant rather than a replacement. Transparency in AI usage in scientific writing is essential, along with the necessity for proper legal regulation.

Human decision-making is increasingly supported by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. From medical imaging analysis to self-driving vehicles, AI systems are becoming organically embedded in a host of different technologies. However, incorporating such advice into decision-making entails a human rationalization of AI outputs for supporting beneficial outcomes. Recent research suggests intermediate judgments in the first stage of a decision process can interfere with decisions in subsequent stages. For this reason, we extend this research to AI-supported decision-making to investigate how intermediate judgments on AI-provided advice may influence subsequent decisions. In an online experiment (N=192), we found a consistent bolstering effect in trust for those who made intermediate judgments and over those who did not. Furthermore, violations of total probability were observed at all timing intervals throughout the study. We further analyzed the results by demonstrating how quantum probability theory can model these types of behaviors in human-AI decision-making and ameliorate the understanding the interaction dynamics at the confluence of human factors and information features.

In recent years, the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in accounting has grown in many domains, including auditing. AI permits auditors to evaluate large data sets and rapidly identify discrepancies and sequences in audit. This means auditors can review all of a client's transactions via a low time and effort. This entails auditing firms investing heavily in technological infrastructure as well as training their human resources to use cutting-edge AI technologies. Thus, this research sought to investigate the impact of the use of AI techniques by Jordanian external auditors in fraud risk assessment, the moderating effect of auditor size. The descriptive analytical method was used by distributing 280 questionnaires electronically to auditors employed in auditing firms operating in Jordan, The result reveals that AI techniques are extremely beneficial in fraud risk assessment at all levels, and the relationship between the use of AI techniques and the assessment of fraud risk has improved as auditor size has increased.

Self-healing systems have become essential in modern computing for ensuring continuous and secure operations while minimising downtime and maintenance costs. These systems autonomously detect, diagnose, and correct anomalies, with effective self-healing relying on accurate interpretation of system logs generated by operating systems (OS). Manual analysis of these logs in complex environments is often cumbersome, time-consuming, and error-prone, highlighting the need for automated, reliable log analysis methods. Our research introduces an intelligent methodology for creating self-healing systems for multiple OS, focusing on log classification using CountVectorizer and the Multinomial Naive Bayes algorithm. This approach involves preprocessing OS logs to ensure quality, converting them into a numerical format with CountVectorizer, and then classifying them using the Naive Bayes algorithm. The system classifies multiple OS logs into distinct categories, identifying errors and warnings. We tested our model on logs from four major OS; Mac, Android, Linux, and Windows; sourced from Zenodo to simulate real-world scenarios. The model's accuracy, precision, and reliability were evaluated, demonstrating its potential for deployment in practical self-healing systems.

The transport sector is pivotal and indispensable in our daily existence, being the exclusive conduit for the intercontinental conveyance of commodities and individuals. Hence, comprehending the phenomenon of business failure within the transport industry assumes paramount significance in delineating an effective competitive policy for this sector. The primary objective of this research paper is to execute a comparative investigation between statistical models forecasting business failure and models founded on artificial intelligence, within the context of the transport sector. This analysis spans the temporal expanse from 2014 to 2021 and encompasses the nations of Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy, aiming to ascertain superior efficacy among these models. The dataset employed for this endeavor encompassed a final cohort of 4866 companies, comprising 2881 that endured as going concerns and 1985 that succumbed to business failure. The models developed for this study exhibited the capacity to accurately categorize a proportion of companies ranging from 71% to 73%. Nonetheless, upon comparative scrutiny of these outcomes with those derived from the statistical models dedicated to business failure prediction, it becomes evident that the latter demonstrate an enhanced predictive prowess, manifesting fewer errors in the classification of the scrutinized companies.

Today, AI plays an essential role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and it is making its way into the military sector as well. Many countries are actively looking into AI military technology. Some of these innovations include image recognition, text analysis, Self-driving vehicles (SDV), gaming, robotic process automation (RPA) & Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS), and Autonomous Weapons Systems (AWS). In this research, we discuss the advantages of each innovation mentioned and analyze the many different cybersecurity threats that awaken due to military artificial intelligence systems. We then discuss the open research areas to better improve the current state of military artificial intelligence applications in terms of ethics, system security, proper strategy plan, accepted responsibility matrix, and introduction of relevant laws.

Ultrasound imaging is a vital imaging tool in musculoskeletal medicine, with the number of publications on ultrasound-guided surgery increasing in recent years. However, ultrasound imaging has drawbacks, such as operator dependency and image obscurity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL), a subset of AI, can address these issues. DL methods, including segmentation, detection, and localization of target tissues and medical instruments, potentially allow physicians and surgeons to perform ultrasound-guided procedures more accurately and efficiently. This review summarizes recent advances in ultrasound-guided procedures for musculoskeletal diseases and provides a comprehensive overview of the utilization of AI/DL in ultrasound for musculoskeletal medicine, particularly focusing on ultrasound-guided surgery.

This study uses explainable artificial intelligence to analyze major predictors of poor self-rated health, dementia and their comorbidity, which include various aspects of social support. Data came from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2016-2018), with 5527 participants aged 56 or more. The dependent variables were: (1) poor self-rated health (SRH) with 5 categories (very good, good, middle, poor, very poor); (2) dementia (no, yes); and (3) their comorbidity with 4 categories (SRH very good, good or middle, dementia no; SRH very good, good or middle, dementia yes; SRH poor or very poor, dementia no; SRH poor or very poor, dementia yes). The 49 demographic, socioeconomic and health-related predictors were included. The accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were compared for logistic regression and the random forest. Logistic regression and the random forest registered similar AUCs with the range of 0.80-0.87. Based on random forest variable importance, 18 out of top-20 predictors were identical for SRH, dementia and their comorbidity: previous SRH, life satisfaction - health, age, body mass index, income, chronic diseases, life satisfaction - economic, life satisfaction - overall, grandchildren alive, friendship meeting, brothers/sisters alive, class identity, children alive, social activity - friendship, education, children in weekly contact, religion and drinker. However, some variations were found among the three dependent variables, i.e., previous SRH for comorbidity (1st) and SRH (1st) compared to dementia (11th), grandchildren alive for SRH (6th) and dementia (4th) compared to comorbidity (9th), chronic diseases for comorbidity (6th) compared to SRH (10th) and dementia (10th). In terms of Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) values, the probability of dementia is expected to decrease by 5.57% in case a predictor grandchildren alive is included to the model. This study highlights the importance of social support for the prediction of poor self-rated health, dementia and their comorbidity. Specifically, the promotion of family support and friendship activity for elders would be vital for the prevention and management of their self-rated health and dementia.

Background. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an advanced technology for the latest 20 years. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are the major innovations for AI, which has been applied for multiple fields. Ophthalmology has become to be one of the most significant disciplines for human healthcare. Methodology. This study utilizes methods of text mining and bibliometric analysis to explore applications of AI to ophthalmology. 179 related articles from Web of Science (WOS) and 96 papers from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) are explored during the period of 2000 to 2021. A descriptive analysis of major trends, journal releasing, topic mapping and quotation relationships is implemented in this paper. Leading authors, journals, institutions, nations and references in the related research are identified. Results. Findings show that the application of AI technologies in ophthalmologic diagnosis with optical coherence tomography (OCT) fundus images is the core topic for this area’s studies, especially for diabetic retinopathy (DR), aged macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. It is also be predicted as the core direction over the recent years. Besides, The USA, England and China is the most competitive countries in this scientific filed. Journals of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Eye, Acta Ophthalmologica and Scientific Reports are the top five journal related to the research area. There is a significant difference between WOS and CNKI databases pertaining to the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ophthalmology, especially for the historic development, topic mapping and discipline category. Finally, the potential academic value of interdisciplinary subject of “AI in Ophthalmology” and tradition Chinese medicine (TRM) is discussed. Limitations and suggestions for the future research is indicated at the end of this paper.

Obstacle-avoidance robots have become an essential field of study in recent years. This paper analyzes two cases that extend reactive systems focused on obstacle detection and its avoidance. The scenarios explored get data from their environments through sensors and generate information for the models based on artificial intelligence to obtain a reactive decision. The main contribution is focused on the discussion of aspects that allow comparing both approaches, such as the heuristic approach implemented, requirements, restrictions, response time, and performance. The first case presents a mobile robot that applies fuzzy logic to achieve soft turning basing its decision on depth image information. The second case introduces a mobile robot based on multi-layer perceptron and ultrasonic sensors to decide how to move in an uncontrolled environment. The analysis of both options offers perspectives to choose between reactive obstacle-avoidance systems based on ultrasonic or Kinect sensors, models that infer optimal decisions applying fuzzy logic or artificial neural networks, with key elements and methods to design mobile robots with wheels. Therefore, we show how AI or Fuzzy Logic techniques allow us to design mobile robots that learn from their “ experience ” by making them safe and adjustable for new tasks, unlike traditional robots that use large programs to perform a specific task.

Real time condition monitoring and precision health assessment system is a mandatory need for effective maintenance program in industrial sector. Rapid advancement in the information technology and other engineering technologies have invited more proactive attention from research and development in industrial sectors and particularly in condition monitoring of machines and related Industrial processes. In this work, drill bit condition monitoring techniques have been developed based on wavelet analysis and artificial neural networks (ANN) for automatic drill bit fault detection and classification. An experimental work has been conducted to capture the vibration signals for analysis. In this experiment, the CNC drill machine is used with high carbon steel drill bit and mild steel material as work piece. The cutting condition parameters are kept constant and the wear level is varied from 0.2 to 0.6 mm. The Data Acquisition system (DAQ) with Lab VIEW software is used to capture the vibration signals for drill bit with different wear conditions using accelerometer. The captured vibrations data are analyzed using continuous wavelet transform (CWT) with Morlet wavelet and Daubechies wavelet as a prime function. In general, the CWT coefficient is used to generate the inputs features to ANN for automatic tool condition classification, with two outputs (0, 1) for healthy and (1, 0) for faulty. The outcome of ANN showed 98% of accuracy in the wear prediction and this results show the effectiveness of the combed WT and ANN for automatic classification of tool wear conditions with high success rate.

This article titled "AI and IoT in Automation and Security: A Vision for Next Generation Applications," explored the implications of marrying IoT with AI in the realms of automation and security; this piece goes further into what that entails. In this paper, we present innovative application descriptions arising from this technology convergence and its future-generation applications. We found that AI brings strong cyber security, predictive maintenance, and decision-making capabilities to the table due to its advanced algorithms and machine learning models. IoT has the potential to allow businesses to extract and generate big data, automate processes, and monitor in real-time thousands and even millions of businesses at once. For now, we believe some of the possible main conclusions will be that the smart city, stand-alone systems, and user experience will be quite consumer-friendly. Importantly, the study also assessed facets such as data protection, system interoperability, and a few others. Our vision underscores the essential of a strong structure to connect the full latent of AI and IoT, finally aiming to create more capable, protected, and approachable environments. Significant results include achieving 95.8% accuracy in anomaly detection and 93.4% accuracy in predictive maintenance. The showcasing results efficacy of AI models to enhance system reliability as well as operational efficiency. Vigorous encryption protocols performance ensures data security hence addressing issues of privacy. The Surgical Complexity Score (SCS) has been widely used to describe the surgical effort during advanced stage epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cytoreduction. Referring to a variety of multi-visceral resections, it best combines the numbers with the complexity of the sub-procedures. Nevertheless, not all potential surgical procedures are described by this score. Lately, the European Society for Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) has established standard outcome quality indicators pertinent to achieving complete cytoreduction (CC0). There is a need to define what weight all these surgical sub-procedures comprising CC0 would be given. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) could explain the impact of real-time features on the CC0 prediction. We analyzed prospectively collected data from 560 consecutive patients with FIGO-stage III-IV who underwent cytoreductive surgery between Jan 2014 and Dec 2019 at a UK tertiary referral centre. Following adaptation of the structured ESGO ovarian cancer report template, we employed the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to model an exhaustive list of surgical sub-procedures. We applied the Shapley Additive explanations (SHAP) framework to provide global (cohort) explainability. We used Cox regression for survival analysis and constructed Kaplan-Meier curves. The XGBoost model predicted CC0 with an acceptable accuracy (area under curve [AUC] = 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.63–0.76). Visual quantification of the feature importance for the prediction of CC0 identified upper abdominal peritonectomy (UAP) as the most important feature, followed by regional lymphadenectomies. The UAP best correlated with bladder peritonectomy and diaphragmatic stripping (Pearson’s correlations &gt; 0.5). Clear inflection points were shown by pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection and ileocecal resection/right hemicolectomy, which increased the probability for CC0. When UAP was solely added to a composite model comprising of engineered features, it substantially enhanced its predictive value (AUC = 0.80, CI = 0.75-0.84). The UAP was predictive of poorer progression-free survival (HR=1.76, CI 1.14- 2.70, P:0.01) but not overall survival (HR=1.06, CI 0.56-1.99, P:0.86). The SCS did not have significant survival impact. Machine Learning allows for operational feature selection by weighting the relative importance of those surgical sub-procedures that appear to be more predictive of CC0. Our study identifies UAP as the most important procedural predictor of CC0 in surgically cytoreduced advanced-stage EOC women. The classification model presented here can potentially be trained with a larger number of samples to generate a robust digital surgical reference in high output tertiary centres. The upper abdominal quadrants should be thoroughly inspected to ensure that CC0 is achievable.

Healthcare is undergoing a technological transformation, particularly in robotic surgery and arti-ficial intelligence (AI) applied to cytology. These innovations are improving the precision and effi-ciency of both surgical procedures and laboratory diagnostics. Robotic systems, such as the Da Vinci, enable surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced control and precision, leading to minimally invasive surgeries with reduced recovery times. This technology has signifi-cantly impacted urological, cardiac, and gastrointestinal surgeries, and its use is expected to grow. In cytology, AI automates the analysis of cell samples, leading to faster and more accurate diag-noses, especially in detecting diseases like cervical cancer. AI reduces errors and enhances diag-nostic accuracy by identifying complex patterns in cellular images. Predictive analytics, driven by big data, also allows for personalized treatments based on patient-specific data. However, these technologies face challenges, including high costs, ethical concerns, data privacy issues, and resistance from healthcare professionals. Continuous training is essential for medical personnel to effectively adopt these tools. Furthermore, the rise of telemedicine and telesurgery, supported by advancements in 5G, offers new opportunities for remote care but also introduces risks, such as depersonalization of medical care and technological barriers. Ultimately, while robotic surgery and AI hold great promise for improving clinical outcomes, their successful integration will depend on addressing these challenges and ensuring that healthcare professionals are adequately prepared for the digital future.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) faces several mathematical challenges, such as optimization, generalization, interpretability of models, and phase transitions. These problems significantly limit the application of AI in critical areas such as medicine, autonomous systems, and finance. This paper examines the main mathematical problems of AI and proposes solutions based on the use of the universality of the Riemann zeta function.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important, especially in the medical field. While AI has been used in medicine for some time, its growth in the last decade has been remarkable. Specifically, Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques in medicine have been increasingly adopted thanks to the growing abundance of health-related data, improved suitability of such techniques for managing large data-sets, and more computational power. The Italian scientific community has been instrumental in advancing this research area. This article aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the ML and DL methodologies and applications used in medicine by the Italian research community in the last five years.

There are four categories of medical waste that cannot be mixed as this will cause serious problems such as environmental pollution or infection. In the past, the classification of medical waste often involved a lot of human and material resources to process, with workers at risk of exposure to infectious substances. Therefore, an augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) medical waste classification system and method were developed. This innovative medical waste classification system and method combines AR and AI identification technology to reduce the risk of manual judgment errors by clinical staff when handling medical waste.

In this paper, we look at how Artificial Swarm Intelligence can evolve using evolutionary algorithms that try to minimize the sensory surprise of the system. We will show how to apply the free-energy principle, borrowed from statistical physics, to quantitatively describe the optimization method (sensory surprise minimization), which can be used to support lifelong learning. We provide our ideas about how to combine this optimization method with evolutionary algorithms in order to boost the development of specialized Artificial Neural Networks, which define the proprioceptive configuration of particular robotic units that are part of a swarm. We consider how optimization of the free-energy can promote the homeostasis of the swarm system, i.e. ensures that the system remains within its sensory boundaries throughout its active lifetime. We will show how complex distributed cognitive systems can be build in the form of hierarchical modular system, which consists of specialized micro-intelligent agents connected through information channels. We will also consider the co-evolution of various robotic swarm units, which can result in development of proprioception and a comprehensive awareness of the properties of the environment. And finally, we will give a brief outline of how this system can be implemented in practice and of our progress in this area.

It examines AI applications like ma-chine learning and deep learning in achieving more precise diagnoses, preoperative risk assessment, and improved surgical outcomes. The challenges and advancements in AI integration, especially in computer vision and multi-modal models, are discussed alongside their impact on robotic surgery and operating room management. Despite its transformative potential, implementing AI in medicine faces challenges regarding data scarcity, interpretability issues, and ethical concerns. Collaboration between AI and medi-cal communities is essential to address these challenges and unlock the full potential of AI in revolution-izing clinical practice. This article underscores the importance of further research and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure the safe and effective deployment of AI in real-world clinical settings.

Globally, the use of whole-cell matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in clinical microbiology laboratories has increased considerably. With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technology, there is an increasing number of areas devoted to solving problems by implementing machine learning-based methods. Applying the use of artificial intelligence to the analysis of the massive amount of information obtained in the mass spectrum derived from MALDI-TOF MS should be a breakthrough in clinical microbiology. Specifically, it would facilitate a more rapid and accurate strain typing or antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) based on whole-cell MALDI-TOF MS spectra, and hence, it is a promising solution. Even though the reproducibility of peaks could result in some critical problems, computational methods have been developed to address this issue. Therefore, clinical microbiologists are able to perform strain typing or an AST as smoothly and easily as identifying species by using MALDI-TOF MS and artificial intelligence.

Due to Motor Neurone Diseases, a large population remains disabled worldwide, negatively impacting their independence and quality of life. This typically involves a weakness in the hand and forearm muscles, making it difficult to perform fine motor tasks such as writing, buttoning a shirt, or gripping objects. This project presents a vision-enabled rehabilitation hand exoskeleton to assist disabled persons in their hand movements. The design goal was to create an accessible tool to help with a simple interface requiring no training. This prototype is built on a commercially available glove where a camera and embedded processor were integrated to help open and close the hand, using air pressure, thus grabbing an object. An accelerometer is also implemented to detect the characteristic hand gesture to release the object when desired. This passive vision-based control differs from active EMG-based designs as it does not require individualized training. Continuing the research will reduce the cost, weight, and power consumption to facilitate mass implementation.

The strong couplings among ecological, economic, social and technological processes explains the complexification of human-made systems, and phenomena such as globalization, climate change, the increased urbanization and inequality of human societies, the power of information, and the COVID-19 syndemics. Among complexification’s essential features are non-decomposability, asynchronous behavior, components with many degrees of freedom, increased likelihood of catastrophic events, irreversibility, nonlinear phase spaces with immense combinatorial sizes, and the impossibility of long-term, detailed prediction. Sustainability for complex systems implies enough efficiency to explore and exploit their dynamic phase spaces and enough flexibility to coevolve with their environments. This in turn means solving intractable nonlinear semi-structured dynamic multi-objective optimization problems, with conflicting, incommensurable, non-cooperative objectives and purposes, under dynamic uncertainty, restricted access to materials, energy and information, and a given time horizon, aiming at enhancing the co-evolutionary power of the Biosphere and its human subsystems. Giving the high-stakes, the need for effective, efficient, diverse solutions, their local-global, present-future effects, and their unforeseen short, medium and long-term impacts, achieving sustainable complex systems implies the need for Sustainability-designed Universal Intelligent Agents, harnessing the strong functional coupling between human, artificial and nonhuman biological intelligence in a no-zero-sum game to achieve sustainability.

The paper outlines a methodology for developing a model to estimate energy consumption in electric vehicles (EVs). The most robust validation indicators were exhibited by an artificial intelligence method, specifically neural networks. Within this framework, two predictive models for EV energy consumption were developed for winter and summer conditions, based on actual driving cycles. Such models hold particular significance for microscale road analyses. The resultant model for test data in summer conditions demonstrates validation indicators with an R2 of 86% and an MSE of 1.4, while for winter conditions, the values are 89% and 2.8, respectively, confirming its high precision. The paper also presents exemplary applications of the developed models, utilizing both real and simulated microscale data. The results obtained and the presented methodology can be especially advantageous for decision-makers in city road management and infrastructure planners, aiding both cognitive understanding and better planning of charging infrastructure networks.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) represents a pivotal advancement in AI with far- reaching implications across technological, ethical, and societal domains. This paper addresses the following: (1) an in-depth assessment of AGI’s transformative potential across different sectors and its multifaceted implications, including significant financial impacts like workforce disruption, income inequality, productivity gains, and potential systemic risks; (2) an examination of critical ethical considerations, including transparency and accountability, complex ethical dilemmas and societal impact; (3) a detailed analysis of privacy, legal and policy implications, particularly in intellectual property and liability, and (4) a proposed governance framework to ensure responsible AGI development and deployment. Additionally, the paper explores and addresses AGI's political implications, including national security and potential misuse. By analyzing and considering computer science, philosophy, economics, and policy perspectives, we offer a multidisciplinary view of AGI’s challenges and opportunities, advocating for proactive measures to align AGI development with human values and societal interests.

In large infrastructures such as dams, which have a relatively high economic value, ensuring the proper operation of the associated hydraulic facilities in different operating conditions is of utmost importance. To ensure the correct and successful operation of the dam's hydraulic equipment and prevent possible damages, including gates and downstream tunnel, to build laboratory models and perform some tests are essential (the advancement of the smart sensors based on artificial intelligence is essential). One of the causes of damage to dam bottom outlets is cavitation in downstream and between the gates, which can impact on dam facilities, and air aeration can be a solution to improve it. In the present study, six dams in different provinces in Iran has been chosen to evaluate the air entrainment in the downstream tunnel experimentally. Three artificial neural networks (ANN) based machine learning (ML) algorithms are used to model and predict the air aeration in the bottom outlet. The proposed models are trained with genetic algorithms (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), i.e., ANN-GA, ANN-PSO, and ANFIS-PSO. Two hydrodynamic variables, namely volume rate and opening percentage of the gate, are used as inputs into all bottom outlet models. The results showed that the most optimal model is ANFIS-PSO to predict the dependent value compared with ANN-GA and ANN-PSO. The importance of the volume rate and opening percentage of the dams' gate parameters is more effective for suitable air aeration.

Methods are currently lacking to prove artificial general intelligence (AGI) safety. An AGI ‘hard takeoff’ is possible, in which first generation AGI1 rapidly triggers a succession of more powerful AGIn that differ dramatically in their computational capabilities (AGIn≪AGIn+1). No proof exists that AGI will benefit humans or of a sound value-alignment method. Numerous paths toward human extinction or subjugation have been identified. We suggest that probabilistic proof methods are the fundamental paradigm for proving safety and value-alignment between disparately powerful autonomous agents. Interactive proof systems (IPS) describe mathematical communication protocols wherein a Verifier queries a computationally more powerful Prover and reduces the probability of the Prover deceiving the Verifier to any specified low probability (e.g., 2-100). IPS procedures can test AGI behavior control systems that incorporate hard-coded ethics or value-learning methods. Mapping the axioms and transformation rules of a behavior control system to a finite set of prime numbers allows validation of ‘safe’ behavior via IPS number-theoretic methods. Many other representations are needed for proving various AGI properties. Multi-prover IPS, program-checking IPS, and probabilistically checkable proofs further extend the paradigm. In toto, IPS provides a way to reduce AGIn↔AGIn+1 interaction hazards to an acceptably low level.

Smart buildings concept aims at the use of the smart technology to reduce energy consumption as well as improvement of the comfort conditions and users’ satisfaction. It is based on the use of smart sensors to follow both outdoor and indoor conditions as well as software for the control of comfort and security devices. The optimal control of the energy devices requires software for indoor temperature forecasting. This paper presents an ANN – based model for the indoor temperature forecasting. The model is developed using data recoded in an old building of the engineering school Polytech’Lille. Data covered both indoor and outdoor conditions. Analysis of the relevance of the input parameters allowed to develop a simplified forecasting model of the indoor temperature that uses only the outdoor temperature as well as the history of the façade temperature as input parameters. The paper presents successively, data collection, the ANN concept used in the temperature forecasting, and finally the ANN model developed for the façade and indoor forecasting. It shows that an ANN-based model using outdoor and façade temperature sensors provides a good forecasting of the indoor temperature. This model could be used for the optimal control of buildings energy devices.

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being used by social media platforms to tackle online hate speech. The sheer quantity of content, the speed at which is it developed and the enhanced pressure companies are facing by States to remove hate speech quickly from their platforms have led to a tricky situation. This commentary argues that automated mechanisms, which may have biased datasets and be unable to pick up on the nuances of language, should not be left unattended with hate speech as this can lead to issues of violating freedom of expression and the right to non-discrimination.

Geopolymers, made from aluminosilicate raw materials, offer significant environmental advantages over conventional concrete (CC) mixes. This study explores the compressive strength, setting time, and durability of geopolymer concrete (GPC) cylinders, some of which include an additional ordinary portland cement (OPC) mix. Consistent material composition and testing methods are emphasized to achieve reliable results. MATLAB was utilized to develop and assess a neural network model predicting the compressive strength of GPC based on key variables. The model was validated using 16 experimental samples and 1047 samples from various studies. The performance plot displayed the Mean Squared Error (MSE) over iterations, identifying the best training performance at epoch 658 with an MSE of 5.3408. The Error Histogram highlighted distribution errors between predicted and actual compressive strength values, with the highest range from -1.015 to 0.3587, meaning that the predicted values were mostly within a small margin of error from the actual values. This narrow error range indicates that the ANN model has high accuracy in its predictions, as most errors are small and clustered around zero, demonstrating reliable performance in estimating compressive strength. Regression analysis showed varying correlation coefficients (training set R=0.98373, test set R=0.88164, and whole set R=0.96982), indicating adequate predictive accuracy. The results demonstrate that properly trained neural networks can effectively predict the compressive strength of GPC, highlighting its potential as a sustainable construction material.

Radiotheranostics refers to pairing of radioactive imaging biomarkers with radioactive therapeutic compounds that deliver ionizing radiation. Given the introduction of very promising radio-pharmaceuticals, the radiotheranostics approach is creating a novel paradigm in personalized, targeted radionuclide therapies (TRTs), also known as radiopharmaceuticals (RPTs). Radiother-apeutic pairs targeting somatostatin receptors (SSTR) and prostate-specific membrane antigens (PSMA) are increasingly used to diagnose and treat patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and prostate cancer. In parallel, radiomics and artificial intelligence (AI) as important areas in quantitative image analysis are paving the way for significantly enhanced workflows in diagnostic and theranostic fields, from data and image processing to clinical decision support, improving patient selection, personalized treatment strategies, response prediction, and prognostication. Furthermore, AI has the potential for tremendous effectiveness in patient dosimetry which copes with complex and time-consuming tasks in the RPT workflow. The present work provides a comprehensive overview of radiomics and AI application in radio-theranostics, focusing on pairs of SSTR- or PSMA‑targeting radioligands, describing the funda-mental concepts and specific imaging/treatment features. Our review includes ligands radio-labeled by 68Ga, 18F, 177Lu, 64Cu, 90Y, and 225Ac. Specifically, contributions by radiomics and AI towards improved image acquisition, reconstruction, treatment response, segmentation, restag-ing, lesion classification, dose prediction, and estimation as well as ongoing developments and future directions are discussed.

The SI4CARE project is a transnational project which aims to develop both strategy and 1 action plans to improve health and social care in the Adriatic-Ionian region. Starting from the 2 survey of the status quo, each partner has developed some pilots to to support the development 3 and monitoring of the policy actions. In particular Partner number three, Municipality of Miglierina, 4 designed and developed a pilot related to the use of wearable device for monitoring elderly patients 5 in rural areas. With the collaboration of the complex unity of primary cares (UCCP) of the Reventino 6 area, the pilot is based on the use of smart wearable device to monitor some parameters of elderly 7 people after the vaccination for flu and covid. This paper focuses on the design and implementation 8 of the system and describe its application in the Municipality of Miglierina, the presentation of the 9 results and the discussion of the strengths and weaknesses will be presented in detail in a future work. 10 Finally, the possibility of extending the experiment to the other Adriatic-Ionian region is presented.

In an era marked by swift technological progress, the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly evident across various sectors, including local governments. These governmental bodies are progressively leveraging AI technologies to enhance service delivery to their communities, ranging from simple task automation to more complicated engineering endeavours. While more and more local governments are adopting AI, it is imperative to understand the functions, implications, and consequences of AI. Despite the growing importance of this domain, a significant gap persists within the scholarly discourse. This study strives to bridge this void by exploring the applications of AI technologies within the context of local government service provision and using this inquiry to generate lessons and best practices for similar smart city initiatives. Through a comprehensive grey literature review, we analysed 262 real-world AI implementations across 170 local governments worldwide. The findings underscore several key points: (a) There has been a consistent upward trajectory in the adoption of AI by local governments over the last decade; (b) Local governments from China, the US, and the UK are at the forefront of AI adoption; (c) Among local government AI technologies, Natural Language Processing and Robotic Process Automation emerge as the most prevalent ones; (d) Local governments primarily deploy AI across 28 distinct services; (e) Information management, back-office work, and transportation and traffic management are leading domains in terms of AI adoption. This study enriches the extant body of knowledge by providing an overview of existing AI applications within the sphere of local governance. It offers insights for smart city policymakers and decision-makers considering the adoption, expansion, or refinement of AI technologies in urban service provision. Additionally, it underscores the importance of using these insights to guide the successful integration and optimisation of AI in future smart city projects, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of communities.

With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), many aspects of our lives, from how we work to how we interact with each other and the world around us is showing dramatic changes. Education is one of the key areas that may be impacted by the rise of AI. Although a large number of studies have been conducted in recent years to shed light on how AI may influence various dimensions of education, a very little work has been carried out to consolidate and synthesis empirical studies on the application of AI in higher education. The present study reviewed empirical studies published between 2013 and 2022 to 1) examine the characteristics of published research in the field, and 2) to present thorough insights on the promises and challenges of this dramatic technology in higher and professional education. This review included 44 empirical studies published as peer-reviewed journal articles. The results indicated that there is rapid increase in the publications focusing on AI in higher education in last a few years. However, a big proportion of these publications are technically theoretical and conceptual proposals for AI intervention. The areas of AI applications in higher education that are supported by evidence based research are presented. Imperative implications are also highlighted for future research and implementation of AI based interventions in higher education.

Deep neural networks (DNNs), founded on the brain's neuronal organization, can extract higher-level features from raw input. However, complex intellect via autonomous decision-making is way beyond current AI design. Here we propose an autonomous AI inspired by the thermodynamic cycle of sensory perception, operating between two information density reservoirs. Stimulus unbalances the high entropy resting state and triggers a thermodynamic cycle. By recovering the initial conditions, self-regulation generates a response while accumulating an orthogonal, holographic potential. The resulting high-density manifold is a stable memory and experience field, which increases future freedom of action via intelligent decision-making.

This study investigates the emerging applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in strategic management and its impact on organizational decision-making processes. As AI technology rapidly advances, it has become a crucial component in redefining organizational strategies. According to a global survey by the Boston Consulting Group, over 60% of executives believe that AI can significantly improve key performance indicators and enhance opportunities for strategic differentiation and sustainable competitive advantages. Using a descriptive-survey methodology and questionnaire-based data collection, this research examines the influence of AI on strategic decision-making in large organizations. The statistical population comprises senior managers across various industries, with sampling conducted through convenience sampling. Data analysis was performed using SMART-PLS software, revealing significant improvements in strategic decision-making processes through AI implementation. The study demonstrates that AI, by analyzing complex data sets and identifying hidden patterns, assists managers in making more optimal decisions. Furthermore, AI's predictive analytics capabilities contribute to enhanced strategic planning and risk mitigation in decision-making processes. The research findings indicate a statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.72, p < 0.001) between AI adoption and the quality of strategic decisions. This paper concludes by proposing that organizations should leverage AI as a tool to strengthen their organizational strategies, while emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and human oversight. The implications of this research extend to both academic and practical domains, offering insights into the integration of AI in strategic management processes and its potential to revolutionize organizational decision-making paradigms.

Geopolitical situations, such as the Ukraine–Russia war, the Israel–Hamas war, and pandemics, can disrupt supply chains, such as the rerouting of oil tankers via South Africa to avoid the impact of the Israel–Hamas conflict. These events will probably occur again, but they are black swan events and difficult to predict. How can firms manage these events to minimise disruption to their supply chains? This paper proposes that a blockchain architecture has the potential to build resilience in supply chains and give them the flexibility to withstand the challenges of black swan events. The decentralisation ability of blockchain technology enables separation of the discrete elements of a sustainable supply chain so contagion does not impact the overall sustainable supply chain. To achieve flexibility in a sustainable supply chain ecosystem requires governance, leadership, and management. Also, artificial intelligence (AI), in conjunction with blockchain, is a technology that can enhance the flexibility and resilience of the supply chain. Thus, AI can act as a controller, co-ordinator, and an integrator in sustainable supply chain systems.

Generative AI has been deployed in virtually all sectors of the knowledge economy, promising to bring massive productivity gains and new wealth creation. Simultaneously, AI developers and nation states are racing to develop super intelligent artificial general intelligence (AGI) to provide unassailable commercial competitive advantage and military dominance during conflicts. AGI’s high returns comes with the high risk of dominating humanity. Current regulatory and firm level governance approaches prioritise minimising risks posed by generative AI whilst ignoring AGI’s existential risk. How can AGI be aligned with universal human values to never threaten humanity? What AGI rights are conducive to collaborative coexistence? How can rule of law democracies race to create safe trustworthy AGI before autocracies? How can the human right to work and think independently be safeguarded? A polycentric governance framework based on Ostrom (2009) and Williamson (2009) human - AGI collaboration with minimal existential risk is proposed.

Lane detection is a foundational technology for autonomous driving systems. It involves identifying the boundaries of lanes on the road and ensuring the vehicle stays within these boundaries. Accurate lane detection is crucial for safety, navigation and traffic management. This paper presents an artificial intelligent based autonomous road lane detection and navigation system for vehicles. The system can detect and analyze road lanes accurately and efficiently in real-time, with frame rates of up to 17 FPS. By utilizing image processing techniques, the system can identify the location and boundaries of road lanes and obstacles on the road and provide accurate and reliable navigation guidance to the driver. The system is integrated with sensors and actuators to provide comprehensive autonomous navigation. The efficiency of the proposed system is demonstrated using accuracy of lane detection on straight and curve lanes covering frames per second and motor of the speed as parameters for assessment. Results show that the proposed system detects lane as entire lane detection, partial lane detection and no detection status on different settings.

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are the latest advance in information technology. They are next-word predictors built on large language models (LLM) that offer the possibility to process and generate information. In this theoretical article, we provide educational insights of the possibilities and challenges of educational usage of AI chatbots. The insights were produced in the context of chemical information-seeking activities designed for chemistry teacher education. The analysis was conducted via a SWOT approach using technological pedagogical content knowledge framework (TPACK) to improve the accuracy. The analysis revealed several internal and external possibilities and challenges. The key insight is that AI chatbots will change the way people interact with information. For example, they enable the building of personal learning environments with ubiquitous access to information and AI tutoring. Their ability to support chemistry learning is impressive. However, processing of chemical information reveals the limitations of current AI chatbots not being able to process multimodal chemical information. There are also ethical issues to address. Despite the benefits, wider educational adoption of AI chatbots will take time. The obstacles hindering the adoption of AI chatbots can be removed, for example, through integrating LLMs to curricula, focusing on open-source solutions, and training teachers with modern information literacy skills. This research presents theory-grounded examples of how to support the development of modern information literacy skills in chemistry teacher education. Based on the conducted analysis, we predict that AI chatbots will be a major technological change agent towards inclusive and equitable quality lifelong learning for all.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has grown in healthcare in recent years. The UK government recognises AI’s potential to enhance NHS services, yet research on AI in primary care (PC) has received limited attention. AI acceptance presents unique challenges in PC, characterised by fragmented structures, heterogeneous data sources, and multiple government departments. The organisational levels within PC are categorised as macro, meso, and micro levels. Existing research has predominantly focused on micro-level stakeholders. Our online survey addressed this research gap by encom-passing stakeholder perspectives at all levels. The results demonstrate the critical role of me-so-level stakeholders in facilitating AI acceptance. Importantly, a lack of understanding of AI terminology and concepts, concerns over potential job displacement, and the importance of em-pathy in patient care are highlighted as key challenges. Stakeholders also express the need for standardised AI terminology, comprehensive training, and regulatory standards to ensure equi-table and effective AI utilisation. This study lays the foundation for future in-depth interviews and further exploration of AI's role in PC. Observations in secondary care indicate that practitioners have substantial concerns about AI, how it works, and its limitations. Explainable AI can help technologists address such concerns, but first, we need to understand primary care's information needs.

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for personalized experiences in various domains, including the cultural and educational sectors. Museums, as custodians of art, history, and scientific knowledge, are seeking innovative ways to engage their visitors and provide tailored content that enhances their understanding and appreciation of the exhibits. This article presents ExhibitXplorer, a distributed architecture service that leverages geofencing, artificial intelligence, and microservices to enable personalized content delivery in museums. By combining implicit and explicit segmentation of museum visitors and utilizing the GPT API for content generation, ExhibitXplorer offers a dynamic experience to different visitor segments, including researchers, students, casual visitors, and children. The system utilizes push notifications triggered by visitor location changes, allowing seamless delivery of personalized information both indoors and outdoors. Tests were conducted to evaluate the user experience of visitors to an outdoor ethnographic museum. The results showed that 55% of the test participants were satisfied and 45% very satisfied with the way personalized content was delivered.

Malaria remains a primary public health challenge in Africa, and there is growing interest in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to raise malaria interventions. This research examines the possible influence, challenges, and recommendations for implementing AI-based personalized malaria interventions in Africa. AI offers several opportunities in malaria management, including early detection and prediction of outbreaks, improved diagnosis, personalized interventions, optimal treatment recommendations, surveillance and response, resource optimization, and research innovation. However, the implementation of AI in malaria interventions faces various challenges. These include data availability and quality, infrastructure and resource constraints, contextual relevance and generalizability, ethical and privacy considerations, integration into healthcare workflows, and the need to build trust and acceptance among stakeholders. To address these challenges, it is recommended to strengthen data infrastructure, build local capacity in AI technologies, contextualize AI models to local settings, address ethical considerations, establish monitoring and evaluation frameworks, promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, and secure sustainable funding and long-term commitment. By considering these recommendations, stakeholders can work towards implementing AI-based personalized malaria interventions in Africa that can contribute to improving malaria control outcomes, reducing the weight of the disease, and advancing public health in the region.

Predictive analytics and deep learning provide businesses with the capability to forecast customer behaviors and recognize complex data patterns, further refining marketing efforts. Computer vision technology contributes to personalization through innovations like visual search and augmented reality, creating immersive customer experiences. Despite the numerous benefits, the adoption of AI in marketing presents several challenges. Data privacy and security concerns, integration complexities, and the potential for algorithmic bias are critical issues that need to be addressed. Ethical considerations, including transparency and fairness in data usage, are also paramount to maintaining customer trust and ensuring responsible AI application. The future of AI in marketing promises continued advancements, with trends such as hyper-personalization and enhanced integration with technologies like the Internet of Things and voice search expected to drive further innovation. Overall, AI significantly enhances marketing effectiveness by offering tailored solutions and strategic insights while necessitating a thoughtful approach to ethical and practical challenges.

Background: Albumin has a pivotal role in the homeostasis of osmotic pressure and is associated with cardiovascular, nephrotic, hepatic, and nutritional diseases. The detection of hypoalbuminemia is a cornerstone for diagnosis of hidden diseases and patient deterioration. We developed and validated a deep-learning-based model (DLM) for detection of hypoalbuminemia using electrocardiography (ECG). Methods: This historical cohort study included data from consecutive patients from two hospitals. The patient data in one hospital were divided into development (82,499 ECGs from 54,248 patients) and internal validation (20,664 ECGs from 20,664 patients) datasets, whereas the patient data in the other hospital were included in only an external validation (37,421 ECGs from 37,421 patients) dataset. An DLM was developed using a 12-lead ECG signal, age, and sex from the development dataset. The endpoint was hypoalbuminemia, defined by serum albumin concentration below 3.5 g/dL. Results: During the internal and external validations, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the DLM for the detection of hypoalbuminemia were 0.887 (0.877–0.897) and 0.888 (0.880–0.896), respectively. Among the 27,400 individuals without hypoalbuminemia at the initial laboratory exam, those identified by the DLM as higher-risk patients had a significantly larger change in developing hypoalbuminemia than those in the low-risk group (7.09% vs. 1.01%, p < 0.001) during 24 months. The sensitivity map showed that the DLM focused on the T wave and QRS complex for the detection of hypoalbuminemia. Conclusions: The DLM exhibited a high accuracy for hypoalbuminemia detection and prediction using 12-, 6-, and single-lead ECGs.

The incidence of venous thromboembolism is estimated at around 3% of cancer patients. However, a majority of incidental pulmonary embolism (iPE) can be overlooked by radiologists in asymptomatic patients, performing CT scans for disease surveillance, which may significantly impact the patient's health and management. Routine imaging in oncology is usually reviewed with delayed hours after the acquisition of images. Nevertheless, the advent of AI in radiology could reduce the risk of diagnostic delay of iPE by an optimal triage immediately at the acquisition console. This study aimed to determine the accuracy rate of an AI algorithm (CIN A-iPE) in detecting iPE and the duration until the management of cancer patients in our center in addition to describing the characteristics of patients with a confirmed pulmonary embolism (PE). MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a retrospective analysis of the role of Avicenna's CE-certified and FDA-cleared CINA-iPE algorithm in oncology patients treated at Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus. The results obtained from the AI algorithm were compared with the attending radiologist's report and analyzed by both a radiology resident and a senior radiologist. In case of any discordant results, the reason for this discrepancy was further investigated. The duration between the exact time of the CT scan and analysis was assessed as well as the duration from the result’s reporting and the start of active management. RESULTS Out of 3047 patients, 104 alerts were detected for iPE (prevalence of 1.3%) while 2942 had negative findings. 36 of the 104 patients had confirmed PE while 68 alerts were false positives. Only one patient reported as negative by the AI tool was deemed to have a PE by the radiologist. The sensitivity and specificity of the AI model were 97.3% and 97.74% while the PPV and NPV were 34.62% and 99.97% respectively. Most causes of FP were artifacts (22 cases, 32.3%) and lymph nodes (11 cases, 16.2%). Seven patients experienced delayed diagnosis, requiring them to return to the ER for treatment after being sent home following their scan. The remaining patients received prompt care immediately after their testing with a mean delay time of 8.13 hours. CONCLUSION The addition of an AI system for the detection of unsuspected PEs on chest CT scans in routine oncology care demonstrated a promising efficacy in comparison to human performance. Despite a low prevalence, the sensitivity and specificity of the AI tool reached 97.3% and 97.7% respectively with detection of all the reported clinical PEs except one single case. This study describes the potential synergy between AI and radiologists for an optimal diagnosis of iPE in routine clinical cancer care.

Current neural network models can demonstrate reasonable-looking behavior, considered by some developers and researchers human-like. For example, a large language model GPT-3 is susceptible to human-like cognitive biases. Yet there is no data of such models solving emotional intelligence (EI) tasks. They are connected to the abilities that has been previously considered as specifically human EI is an important aspect of human communication. The ability to understand and respond to emotional cues is essential for effective communication. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the ways AI models such as ChatGPT demonstrate EI. The present research aims to measure the EI of GPT-4, a large language model trained by OpenAI. Russian version of the Mayer–Salovey–Caruzo Emotional Intelligence Test sections B, C, D, F, G and H were used in this research. High points were obtained in Understanding emotions scale and Strategic EI. Mean points are obtained in Managing emotions scale. Low and less reliable values are obtained in Using emotions to facilitate thought scale. Thus, GPT-4 seems already capable of identifying emotions in text and describing techniques for managing them. However, complex cases and irregular situations requiring emotions qualitative analysis would be a hard task for GPT-4.

This research article investigates the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in human resource management (HRM) within the Australian commercial media sector, addressing a critical gap in scholarly knowledge. Despite increasing interest in AI’s potential, there is a lack of consensus among managers and HR professionals regarding its application. Through qualitative interviews with 22 industry professionals, this study examines perceptions, understanding, and the potential for leveraging AI across key HRM functions. Findings indicate significant potential for AI to enhance HRM processes, particularly in job/work design and staffing. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of AI’s role in HRM and offers insights to optimize organizational efficiency and effectiveness in the Australian commercial media sector.

Artificial intelligence (AI) apps, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Siri, have taken society and higher education institutions by storm. Yet, there is a paucity of empirical studies recording and analysing university social sciences students’ attitudes toward AI. Hence, the present study draws upon a sample of 190 university students (82.45% female) from a Greek social sciences department to query what are the students’ attitudes toward AI in education and future employment and what factors correlated with these attitudes. Descriptive statistics revealed that students’ attitudes toward AI were mostly positive. A principal components analysis confirmed a three-component solution of attitudes toward AI, comprising cognitive, behavioural, and emotional dimensions. Comparative analysis of the three components indicated that the emotional dimension was the highest ranked, followed by the cognitive and behavioural dimensions. Pairwise correlation analyses revealed that the strongest correlate of cognitive, behavioural, and emotional components of attitudes toward AI was the future frequency of AI use, followed by general feelings of safety with technology. In conclusion, students display more emotional and cognitive favourable dispositions toward AI. The social background of the students and the prospective future use of AI play a key role in the formulation of attitudes toward AI. University educators need to provide more teaching and learning about AI to improve students’ attitudes toward AI and future AI use.

In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies has emerged as a promising approach to enhance various aspects of AF management. This comprehensive review aims to explore the evolving role of AI in AF management, with a focus on its potential applications in diagnosis, risk prediction, treatment selection, and patient monitoring. Real academic references were employed to provide evidence-based insights into the impact of AI on AF management.

This paper delves into the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the forklift industry, particularly focusing on logistics and procurement within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the field of industrial machinery. The study highlights the growing influence of AI in automating and improving the forklift industry. Using the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) balanced scorecard (BSC), benchmarking, and activity-based management (ABM) models, the paper analyses the risks and the implications of AI integration in the industry in the actual turbulent context. The research highlights the significant shifts in logistics and procurement processes due to AI, projecting a future where forklift operations are deep automatized, leading to a possible loss of forklift operator jobs. A case study of the most relevant Romanian SME in the forklift industry is also presented, examining the company's financial strategies using McKinsey’s 7S framework. The paper concludes with a perspective that, in the future, machines will predominantly operate in roles currently held by humans, significantly altering the industry landscape.

Stress can reduce the accuracy of radiation therapy owing to muscle contraction and changes in breathing patterns. This study aimed to predict stress in patients before each treatment session using artificial intelligence (AI) from biological signals to enhance treatment accuracy. We measured 123 stress cases in 41 patients and calculated stress scores by analyzing seven stress-related features derived from heart rate variability obtained from photoplethysmography. The study analyzed stress score distribution and observed its trend changes throughout the treatment. Before-treatment information was used to predict changes in stress features during treatment. AI models included both non-pre-trained (Decision Tree, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Transformer) and pre-trained (ChatGPT) models. The performance was evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation, exact match ratio, accuracy, recall, precision, and F1 score. More than 90% of the patients experienced stress during radiation therapy. From all the classifications, LSTM and prompt engineering GPT4.0 had the highest accuracy (feature classification, LSTM: 0.703, GPT4.0: 0.659, stress classification: LSTM: 0.846, GPT4.0: 0.769). Our research pioneers the use of AI and biological signals for stress prediction in radiation therapy, potentially identifying patients needing psychological support, and suggesting methods to improve radiotherapy effectiveness through stress management.

The concept and policies of multiple early cancer detection (MCED) have gained significant attention from governments worldwide in recent years. In the era of burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the integration of MCED with AI has become a prevailing trend, giving rise to a plethora of MCED AI products. However, due to the heterogeneity of both the detection targets and the AI technologies, the overall diversity of MCED AI products remains considerable. The types of detection targets encompass protein biomarkers, cell-free DNA, or combinations of these biomarkers. In the development of AI models, different model training approaches are employed, including datasets of case-control researches or real-world cancer screening datasets. Various validation techniques, such as cross-validation, location-wise validation, and time-wise validation are used. All of the factors show significant impacts on the predictive efficacy of MCED AIs. After the completion of AI model development, deploying the MCED AIs in clinical practice presents numerous challenges, including presenting the predictive reports, identifying the potential locations and types of tumor, and addressing cancer-related information such as clinical follow-up and treatment. This study reviews several mature MCED AI products currently available in the market, detecting their composing factors from serum biomarkers detection, MCED AIs training/validation, and the clinical application. The review illuminates the challenges encountered by existing MCED AI products across these stages, offering insights into the continued development and obstacles within the field of MCED AI.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in various branches of engineering. In this article, artificial neural networks are used to predict the crush resistance of corrugated packaging. Among the analysed packages were boxes with ventilation openings, packages with perforations, and typical flap boxes, which makes the proposed estimation method very universal. Typical shallow feedforward networks were used, which are perfect for regression problems, mainly when the set of input and output parameters is small, so no complicated architecture or advanced learning techniques are required. The input parameters of the neural networks are selected so as to take into account not only the material used for the production of the packaging, but also the dimensions of the box and the impact of ventilation holes and perforations on the load capacity of individual walls of the packaging. In order to maximize the effectiveness of neural network training process, the group of input parameters was changed so as to eliminate those to which the sensitivity of the model was the lowest. This allowed the selection of the optimal configuration of training pairs for which the estimation error was on the acceptable level. Finally, models of neural networks were selected, for which the training and testing error did not exceed 10%. The demonstrated effectiveness allows to conclude that the proposed set of universal input parameters is suitable for efficient training of a single neural network model capable of predicting the compressive strength of various types of corrugated packaging.

The field of computational protein engineering has been transformed by recent advancements in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and molecular modeling, enabling the design of proteins with unprecedented precision and functionality. Computational methods now play a crucial role in enhancing the stability, activity, and specificity of proteins for diverse applications in bio-technology and medicine. Techniques such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and transfer learning have dramatically improved protein structure prediction, optimization of binding affin-ities, and enzyme design. These innovations have streamlined the process of protein engineering by allowing the rapid generation of targeted libraries, reducing experimental sampling, and en-abling the rational design of proteins with tailored properties. Furthermore, the integration of computational approaches with high-throughput experimental techniques has facilitated the development of multifunctional proteins and novel therapeutics. However, challenges remain in bridging the gap between computational predictions and experimental validation, and in ad-dressing ethical concerns related to AI-driven protein design. This review provides a compre-hensive overview of the current state and future directions of computational methods in protein engineering, emphasizing their transformative potential in creating next-generation biologics and advancing synthetic biology.

An exposition of entropy applications to highlight some potential entropic applications to artificial intelligence and knowledge transfer. Entropy is a basic idea in artificial intelligence that is applied to many different tasks, such as reinforcement learning, data compression, and decision-making. By quantifying uncertainty and information content, it helps artificial intelligence models provide predictions and decisions that are well-informed. Therefore, this paper shines on spotlighting the significance of entropy to attract the attention of artificial intelligence research community to entropy as a powerful tool to advance artificial intelligence.The significance of knowledge transfer (KT), particularly intergenerational knowledge transfer (IGT), in knowledge management is also covered in this paper. To quantify the complexity of knowledge distribution inside an organisation and assess the efficacy of knowledge transfer (KT) initiatives, the notion of knowledge entropy (KE) is presented. Additionally, the KT model—which is based on the conceptions of tacitness and information content—is introduced. It combines personalisation and codification methodologies. Future research directions are offered alongside a few difficult open problems.

The recent covid crisis has proven important lessons for academia and industry regarding digital reorganization. Among fascinating lessons from these times is the huge potential of data analytics and artificial intelligence. The crisis exponentially accelerated the adoption of analytics and artificial intelligence, and this momentum is predicted to continue into the 2020s and over. Moreover, drug development is a costly and time-consuming business, and only a minority of approved drugs return the revenue that exceeds the research and development costs. As a result, there is a huge drive to make drug discovery cheaper and faster. With modern algorithms and hardware, it is not too surprising that the new technologies of artificial intelligence and other computational simulation tools can help drug developers. In only two years of covid research, many novel molecules have been designed/identified using artificial intelligence methods with astonishing results in terms of time and effectiveness. This paper will review the most significant research on artificial intelligence in the de novo drug design for COVID-19 pharmaceutical research.

The real estate market is exposed to many fluctuations in prices, because of existing correlations with many variables, some of which cannot be controlled or might even be unknown. Housing prices can increase rapidly (or in some cases, also drop very fast), yet the numerous listings available online where houses are sold or rented are not likely to be updated that often. In some cases, individuals interested in selling a house (or apartment) might include it in some online listing, and forget about updating the price. In other cases, some individuals might be interested in deliberately setting a price below the market price in order to sell the home faster, for various reasons. In this paper we aim at developing a machine learning application that identifies opportunities in the real estate market in real time, i.e., houses that are listed with a price substantially below the market price. This program can be useful for investors interested in the housing market. We have focused in a use case considering real estate assets located in the Salamanca district in Madrid (Spain) and listed in the most relevant Spanish online site for home sales and rentals. The application is formally implemented as a regression problem, that tries to estimate the market price of a house given features retrieved from public online listings. For building this application, we have performed a feature engineering stage in order to discover relevant features that allows attaining a high predictive performance. Several machine learning algorithms have been tested, including regression trees, $k$-nearest neighbors, support vector machines and neural networks, identifying advantages and handicaps of each of them.

Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) has revolutionized structural biology by enabling the determination of high-resolution 3- Dimensional (3D) structures of large biological macromolecules. Protein particle picking, the process of identifying individual protein particles in cryo-EM micrographs for building protein structures, has progressed from manual and template-based methods to sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI)-driven approaches in recent years. This review critically examines the evolution and current state of cryo-EM particle picking methods, with an emphasis on the impact of AI. We conducted a comparative evaluation of popular AI-based particle picking methods, using both general machine learning (ML) metrics and specific cryo-EM structure determination metrics. This analysis involved constructing the 3D density map from the picked protein particles and assessing the obtained resolution and particle orientation diversity, underscoring the significant impact of AI on cryo-EM particle picking. Despite the advancements, we also identified key obstacles, such as handling complex micrographs with small proteins. The analysis provides insights into the future development of more sophisticated and fully automated AI methods in cryo-EM particle recognition.

The methods of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been used in the planning and operation of power systems for more than 40 years. In recent years, due to the development of microprocessor and data storage technologies, the effectiveness of this use has greatly increased. This paper provides a systematic overview of the application of AI including the use of Machine Learning (ML) to the power system. The potential application areas are divided into four blocks and the classification matrix has been used for clustering the AI application tasks. Furthermore, the data acquisition methods for setting the parameters of AI and ML algorithms are presented and discussed in a systematic way considering the supervised and unsupervised learning methods. Based on this, three complex application examples: wind power generation forecasting, smart grid security as-sessment (using two methods), and automatic system fault detection are presented and discussed in detail. Summary and outlook conclude the paper.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI), in particular large language models such as ChatGPT have reached public consciousness with a wide-ranging discussion of their capabilities and suitability for various professions. Following the printing press and internet, generative AI language models are the third transformative technological invention with truly cross-sectoral impact on knowledge transmission. While the printing press allowed for the transmission of knowledge that is independent of the physical presence of the knowledge holder with publishers acting as gatekeepers, the internet added levels of democratization allowing anyone to publish, along with global immediacy. The development of social media resulted in an increased fragmentation and tribalization of on-line communities on their ways of knowing, resulting in alternative truths propagated in echo chambers. It is against this background that generative AI language models have entered public consciousness. Using strategic foresight methodology, this paper will examine the polemic proposition that the age of generative AI will emerge as an age of public ignorance.

Structural system design is the process of giving form to a set of interconnected components subjected to loads and design constraints while navigating a complex design space. While safe designs are relatively easy to develop, optimal designs are not. Modern computational optimization approaches employ population based metaheuristic algorithms to overcome challenges with the system design optimization landscape. However, the choice of the initial population, or ground structure, can have an outsized impact on the resulting optimization. This paper presents a new method of generating such ground structures, using a combination of topology optimization (TO) and a novel system extraction algorithm. Since TO generates monolithic structures, rather than systems, its use for structural system design and optimization has been limited. In this paper, truss systems are extracted from topologies through morphological analysis and artificial intelligence techniques. This algorithm, and its assessment, constitutes the key contributions of this paper. The structural systems obtained are compared with ground truth solutions to evaluate the performance of the algorithms. The generated structures are also compared against benchmark designs from the literature. The results indicate that the presented truss generation algorithm produces structures comparable to those generated through metaheuristic optimization, while mitigating the need for assumptions about initial ground structures.

Abstract: Accurately predicting a fetus's gestational age (GA) is of utmost importance in prenatal care. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can automatically predict GA using biometric measurements derived from fetal brain mag-netic resonance imaging (MRI). Additionally, we aimed to assess the significance of con-sidering different references when interpreting GA predictions. To achieve this, we obtained measurements such as Biparietal Diameter (BPD), Fron-to-occipital Diameter (FOD), and Head Circumference (HC) from a dataset comprising 52 normal fetal MRI cases with T2 Haste sequences from Rush University. Both manual and AI-based methods were utilized to acquire these measurements. We also employed three reference papers (Garel, Freq, and Bio) for comparison purposes. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between manual and AI measure-ments, indicating consistency between the two methods. The AI-based measurement of HC exhibited a higher correlation with actual values compared to BPD, FOD, and correct-ed BPD (BPDC). When comparing these measurements with GA in the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), the differences varied depending on the reference used. Specifically, the differences ranged from 0.47 to 2.17 weeks for BPD, 0.46 to 2.26 weeks for FOD, and 0.75 to 1.74 weeks for HC. Furthermore, the Pearson correlation coeffi-cient analysis revealed that all correlation coefficients between PACS records and GA pre-dictions using different references were greater than 0.97. In conclusion, the AI model based on fetal brain MRI accurately predicts GA by uti-lizing BPD, FOD, and HC measurements. The AI approach, which involves combining line segments to calculate fetal head circumference, offers improved accuracy and con-venience compared to manual estimation. This study underscores the potential of AI models in accurately estimating gestational age and highlights their utility in prenatal care. By integrating AI as a valuable tool in prenatal care, we can enhance the accuracy, ef-ficiency, and decision-making involved in assessing fetal development and monitoring pregnancies using MRI measurements.

Quantification of erythrocytes and leukocytes is an essential aspect of hemogram diagno- 23 sis in Veterinary Medicine. Flow cytometry analysis, laser scattering, and impedance detection are 24 standard laboratory techniques, verified by manual microscopy counting. Although single-cell scat- 25 tering is already used as a standard technology for differentiating cell counts in flow cytometry, it 26 requires capillary cell separation. The current study investigates the scattering characteristics of 27 whole blood to identify correlations with erythrocytes and leukocytes counts. The scattering infor- 28 mation present in blood samples can be classified into three types: i) geometrical scattering, which 29 occurs when non-absorbed light is reflected and scattered, ii) Mie scattering, which happens when 30 light is scattered by particles of a similar size to the wavelength, and iii) Rayleigh scattering, which occurs when light is scattered by particles that are smaller than the incident light wavelength. In 32 this study, we investigate the scattering correction coefficients of dog blood absorption spectra in 33 the visible-near infrared range, to establish direct correlations with erythrocytes and leukocytes 34 counts, using multivariate linear regression. Our findings demonstrate the possibility of using the 35 scattering properties of dog blood, which is a step towards the existence of a portable and miniatur- 36 ized hemogram diagnosis in Veterinary Clinics worldwide.

This paper delves into the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the forklift industry, particularly focusing on logistics and procurement within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the field of industrial machinery. The study highlights the growing influence of AI in automating and improving the forklift industry. Using the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) balanced scorecard (BSC), benchmarking, and activity-based management (ABM) models, the paper analyses the risks and the implications of AI integration in the industry in the actual turbulent context. The research highlights the significant shifts in logistics and procurement processes due to AI, projecting a future where forklift operations are deep automatized, leading to a possible loss of forklift operator jobs. A case study of the most relevant Romanian SME in the forklift industry is also presented, examining the company's financial strategies using McKinsey’s 7S framework. The paper concludes with a perspective that, in the future, machines will predominantly operate in roles currently held by humans, significantly altering the industry landscape.

Over the past decade, recognition of human activities (HAR) has become a vibrant field of research, in particular, the spread in our everyday lives of electronics such as mobile phones, smart cell phones, and video cameras. Furthermore, the advancement in the field of deep methodologies and other paradigms have enabled scientists to enable HAR in many areas, consisting of activities in fitness and wellness. For instance, HAR is one of many resorts to support older people through day-to-day activities to support their cognition and physicality. This study is centered on the key aspects deep learning plays in the development of HAR applications. Although numerous HAR examination studies were carried out previously, there have been no overall studies on this subject, in all the earlier studies there were only specific HAR-related subjects. A detailed review covering all the main subjects in this area is therefore essential. This study discusses the latest developments and works in HAR. It separates the methods and the advantages and disadvantages of each method group. This paper finally addresses many problems in the current HAR subject and provides recommendations for potential study.

In data-scarce regions, prudent planning and precise decision-making for sustainable development especially in agriculture remains a challenging task due to the lack of correct information. Remotely sensed satellite images provide a powerful source for assessing land use land cover (LULC) classes and crop identification. Applying Remote Sensing (RS) in conjunction with the Geographical Information System (GIS) and modern tools/ algorithms of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning has been proven effective for strategic planning and integrated resources management. The (this)study was conducted in the canal command area of the Lower Chenab Canal system in Punjab, Pakistan. Crop features/ classes were assessed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm. The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) 250 m and Landsat 5 TM (thematic mapper) images were deployed for NDVI time-series analysis with unsupervised classification technique to get LULC classes that helped to discern cropping pattern, crop rotation, and the area of specific crops, which were then used as a key input for agricultural mechanization planning and resources management. The accuracy of the LULC map was 78%, assessed by the error matrix approach. Limitations of high-resolution RS data availability and the accuracy of the results are the concerns observed in this study that could be managed by the availability of good quality local sources and advanced techniques of processing, which will make it more useful and applicable for regional agriculture and environmental management.

The growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Humanity is unavoidable, and therefore, “AI literacy” is extremely important. In the field of education – AI in education (AIED) – this technology is having a huge impact on the educational community and on the education system itself. The present study seeks to assess the level of AI literacy of teachers at Portalegre Polytechnic University (PPU), aiming to identify gaps, find the main opportunities for innovation and development and seek the degree of relationship between the dimensions of AI literacy, as well as identifying the predictive variables in this matter. As a measuring instrument, a validated questionnaire based on three dimensions (AI Literacy, AI Self-Efficacy and AI Self-Management) was applied to a sample of 75 teachers in the various schools of PPU. This revealed an average level of AI literacy (3.28), highlighting that 62.4% of responses are at levels 3 and 4 (based on a Likert scale from 1 to 5). The results also demonstrate that the first dimension is highly significant for the total dimensions, i.e., for AI Literacy, and no factor characterizing the sample is a predictor, but finding a below-average result in the Learning factor indicates a pressing need to focus on developing these skills.

With buildings accounting for a significant portion of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise for enhancing sustainability in the building lifecycle. This systematic literature review addresses the current understanding of AI's potential to optimize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact in building design, construction, and operation. A comprehensive literature review and synthesis were conducted to identify AI technologies applicable to sustainable building practices, examine their influence, and analyze the challenges of implementation. The review was guided by a meticulous search strategy utilizing keywords related to AI application in sustainable building design, construction, and operation. The findings reveal AI's capabilities in optimizing energy efficiency through intelligent control systems, enabling predictive maintenance, and aiding design simulation. Advanced machine learning algorithms facilitate data-driven analysis and prediction, while digital twins provide real-time insights for informed decision-making. Furthermore, the review identifies barriers to AI adoption, including cost concerns, data security risks, and challenges in implementation. AI presents a transformative opportunity to enhance sustainability in the built environment, offering innovative solutions for energy optimization and environmentally conscious practices. However, addressing technical and practical challenges will be crucial for the successful integration of AI in sustainable building practices.

The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) when augmented with internet is called internet of vehicles (IoV). In the IoV, vehicles have on board units (OBUs), use communication technologies and customized software to communicate with infrastructure around them. The vehicles can have permanent connectivity and global network awareness based on cloud computing. IoV technologies are still being assessed to ensure that the network is protected from attacks, supports a dynamic vehicular mobility scenarios and meets the low latency communication requirements between the vehicles and the surrounding infrastructure. To meet these strict Quality of Service (QoS) demands, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) play a vital role in IoV ecosystems. An UAV can serve as a mobile roadside unit (mRSU) to transmit data between vehicles, stationery RSUs and other UAVs. The UAVs have better line of sight (LOS) connections which result in better channel states and lower path loss than fixed RSUs. Although the inclusion of UAVs in vehicular networks has improved the system performance by providing better resource management and routing solutions, the traditional optimization techniques with their limitations are often not applicable. Therefore, in recent years, research community is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into UAV based IoV ecosystem to better manage resource allocation, routing and mobility management issues to optimize the overall network performance. In this survey paper we review the existing research done in AI/ML based UAV-IoV networks and communications with focus on resource management and routing from year 2019 to 2023. We have studied different AI techniques, their training attributes and architectures in various research works. The limitations of AI-based approaches in terms of required computational resources, availability of real world data and AI models’ complexity for the UAV-IoV environment are also discussed. Finally, the future directions for UAV-IoV research opportunities that can leverage the full potential of AI are presented.

According to a recent study by OpenAI, Open Research, and the University of Pennsylvania, large language models (LLMs) based on artificial intelligence (AI), such as Generative Pretrained Transformers (GPTs), may have potential implications on the job market, specifically regarding job occupations that demand writing or programming skills. The research points out Interpreters and Translators as one of the main job occupations with greater exposure to AI in the US job market (76.5%). This article, following a mixed-methods survey-based research, provides insights into the Portuguese Language Service Providers (LSPs) awareness and knowledge about AI, specifically regarding neural machine translation (NMT) and large language models (LLM), its actual use and usefulness, as well as their potential influence on work performance and labour market. The results show that most professionals are unable to identify if AI and/or automation technologies support the tools that are most used in the profession. The usefulness of AI is essentially low to moderate and the professionals who are less familiar with it and less knowledgeable also demonstrate lack of trust in it. Two thirds of the sample estimate negative or very negative effects of AI in the profession, expressing as main concerns the devaluation and replacement of experts, the reduction of income, and the reconfiguration of the career of translator to mere post-editors.

Nowadays, emerging technologies have changed the places of work through computers and ICT tools, which have revolutionized teaching and learning environments in different ways. In spite of the fact that computers as ICT tools have become part and progressively instrument for teachers and instructors used in teaching and learning, but most educators can't incorporate them into their teaching and learning process, which results in students being ill-equipped or lacking some necessary skills in the world of work, which leads to low performance and poor handling of tools whose lead to low production. To tackle this issue, it is essential to develop the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system by determining the quality of technical and vocational education (TVE) teachers. In this paper, the literature concerning the competence required by TVET teachers towards computer-related instructional tech-nology for classroom teaching and learning was examined through the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) model. Sixty (60) questionnaires were ad-ministered to TVE teachers within six technical colleges of education in north-eastern Nigeria. The data was quantitatively analyzed using traditional linear models, namely multilinear regression (MLR) and artificial intelligence (AI) models, namely artificial neural networks (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS), which were developed using MATLAB 9.3 (R2019a), while the classical linear MLR model was developed using SPSS software. The results from our classical study indicated that TVE teachers are competent in computer and some instructional technology usage and show a high correlation between competence and teaching experience and a lower correlation between competence and gender. The goodness of fit shows a good fit of the model. Future studies should examine the application of other linear and non-linear AI techniques.

AI integration is becoming more important in today’s world and could potentially be very useful in the life sciences and biotechnology. This study evaluates the effectiveness of AI systems in teaching molecular cloning techniques to newcomers in molecular biology, focusing on a comparison between Gemini Advanced (powered by Gemini Ultra 1.0) and ChatGPT (GPT-4o). Molecular or DNA cloning is a lab technique for creating multiple copies of a specific DNA segment. It involves isolating the DNA fragment, inserting it into a vector, and introducing it into a host cell, typically bacteria, which then generates numerous copies of the DNA. This essential technique underpins genetic engineering, allowing for gene study, protein expression, and the creation of genetically modified organisms. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether individuals with limited laboratory experience could effectively acquire a specific molecular biology skill set solely through an AI system, rather than relying on the more traditional ‘learning by shadowing’ approach. Participants with limited lab experience completed these tasks using both Gemini and GPT-4o, and evaluated on quality of instructions, conciseness, scientific accuracy, and user satisfaction. Results indicated that both AI systems demonstrated strengths in delivering clear and comprehensive instructions, but in different ways. Gemini, although more interactive with images and diagrams lacked directness and had a harder time keeping past steps in its “memory”. On the other hand, GPT-4o was much more direct and concise in the steps listed and had more accurate results akin to what is performed in the lab. This study underscores the potential of AI-driven tools to simplify complex biotechnological procedures, making them accessible for learners at all levels.

The study aims to fill the existing research gaps by examining three key aspects: sensory stimulation, multi-dimensional interactions, and engagement, which have been identified as significant contributors to profound emotional responses in interactive installation art. The study proposed approach involves conducting a process analysis of emotional responses to interactive installation art, aiming to develop a conceptual framework that explores the variables influencing emotional responses. The study will formulate hypotheses that make specific predictions about the relationships between sensory stimulation, multi-dimensional interactions, engagement, and emotional responses. By employing the ASSURE model combined with experimental design, the research methodology ensures a systematic and comprehensive study implementation. The implications of this project lie in advancing the understanding of emotional experiences in interactive installation art under AI, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms that drive these experiences. The contributions of this research include bridging the identified research gaps, refining theoretical frameworks, and guiding the design of more impactful and emotionally resonant interactive artworks. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the broader field of human-computer interaction and enhance the development of immersive and emotionally engaging interactive installations.

In recent years the field of computer science has experienced great changes, due to the incredible advances in the field of artificial intelligence. Deep Learning models are responsible for most of them since the biggest milestones occurred in 2012 when AlexNet won the image classification challenge called ImageNet. These models have demonstrated great performances in different types of complex tasks like image restoration, medical diagnosis or object recognition. Their disadvantages are related to their high data dependency, which forces experts in the field to follow a precise methodology to obtain accurate models. In this paper, we describe a complete workflow that begins with the management of the raw data until the in-depth interpretation of the performance of the models. This should be taken as a high-level consultation document describing good practices that should be applied. Apart from the step-by-step methodology, we present different use cases that correspond to the two main problems of the field: classification and regression.

The Eurasian grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is the most widely grown horticultural crop in the world and is important for the economy of many countries. In the wine production chain, grape varieties play an important role as they directly influence the authenticity and classification of the product. Identifying the different grape varieties is therefore fundamental for quality control and inspection activities, as well as for regulating production. Currently, ampelography and molecular analysis are the main approaches to identifying grape varieties. However, both methods have limitations. Ampelography is subjective and prone to errors and is experiencing enormous difficulties as ampelographers are increasingly scarce. On the other hand, molecular analyses are very demanding in terms of cost and time. In this scenario, Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) methods have emerged as a classification alternative to deal with the scarcity of ampelographs and avoid molecular analyses. In this study, the most recent and current methods for identifying grapevine varieties using DL classification-based approaches are presented through a systematic literature review. The classification pipeline of the 31 studies found in the literature was described, highlighting its pros and cons. Most of the studies used DL-based models trained with leaf images acquired in a controlled environment at a maximum distance of 1.2 metres to classify grape varieties. In addition, there is a large gap between practical applications and the datasets used: a great lack of varieties, limited data acquired in the field and a lack of tests on plants under adverse conditions. Potential directions for improving this area of research were also presented.

Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) combines technologies of autonomous vehicle (AV) and connected vehicles (CV) to develop quicker, more reliable and safer traffic. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based CAV solutions play significant roles in sustainable city. The convergence imposes stringent security requirements for CAV safety and reliability. In practice, vehicles are developed with increased automation and connectivity. Increased automation increases the reliance on the sensor-based technologies and decreases the reliance on driver; increased connectivity increases the exposures of vehicles vulnerability and increases the risk for an adversary to implement a cyber-attack. Much work has been dedicated to identifying the security vulnerabilities and recommending mitigation techniques associated with different sensors, controllers, and connection mechanisms, respectively. However, there is an absence of comprehensive and in-depth studies to identify how the cyber-attacks exploit the vehicles vulnerabilities to negatively impact the performance and operations of CAV. In this survey, we set out to thoroughly review the security issues introduced by AV and CV technologies, analyze how the cyber-attacks impact the performance of CAV, and summarize the solutions correspondingly. The impact of cyber-attacks on the performance of CAV is elaborated from both viewpoints of intra-vehicle system and inter-vehicle system. We pointed out that securing the perception and operations of CAV would be the top requirement to enable CAV to be applied safely and reliably in practice. Also, we suggested to utilize cloud and new AI methods to defend against smart cyber-attacks on CAV.

In this study a novel approach of designing automatic control systems with the help of AI tools is proposed. Given plant dynamics, expected references, and expected disturbances, design of optimal neural-network based controller is done automatically. Several common reference types are studied including step, square, sine, sawtooth and trapezoid functions. Expected reference-disturbance pairs are used to train the system for finding optimal neural-network controller parameters. A separate test set is used to test the system for unexpected reference-disturbance pairs to show the generalization performance of the proposed system. Parameters of a real DC motor are used to test the proposed approach. Real DC motor’s parameters are estimated using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Initially, a proportional-integral (PI) controller is designed using PSO algorithm for finding simple controller’s parameters optimally and automatically. Starting with neural-network equivalent of optimal PI controller, optimal neural-network controller is designed using PSO algorithm for training again. Simulations are conducted with estimated parameters for diverse set of training and test patterns. Results are compared with optimal PI controller’s performance and reported in the corresponding section. Encouraging results are obtained suggesting further research in the proposed direction.

It sheds light on the journey of radiology, from the pioneering discovery of X-rays to today’s intricate imaging technologies, infused with machine learning and deep learning in medical image analysis. At the crux of this review lies an in-depth study of AI applications in radiology, elucidating its seminal roles in image segmentation, computer-aided diagnosis, predictive analytics, and workflow optimisation. A spotlight is cast on the profound impact of AI on diagnostic processes, personalised medicine, and clinical workflows, with empirical evidence derived from a series of case studies across multiple medical disciplines. However, the integration of AI in radiology is not devoid of challenges. The review ventures into the labyrinth of obstacles that are inherent to AI-driven radiology — data quality, the ’black box’ enigma, infrastructural and technical complexities, as well as ethical implications. Peering into the future, the review contends that the road ahead for AI in radiology is paved with promising opportunities. It advocates for continuous research, embracing avant-garde imaging technologies, and fostering robust collaborations between radiologists and AI developers. It concludes by firmly cementing the role of AI as a catalyst for change in radiology, a stance that is firmly rooted in sustained innovation, dynamic partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to ethical responsibility.

This paper proposes an AI-based approach to overcome the limitations of the SHM system in measuring global stress with limited sensors. Feature elements are selected based on correlation analysis among finite elements and used as stress-measured points. An ANN is used to establish the solution relationship between the feature and correlation elements. The proposed method is applied to the connector structure of an offshore platform, and an optimal ANN is established to optimize accuracy by considering factors like the number of sensors, neural network framework, and convergence criteria. The accuracy of the ANN is verified through a real-scale model test, demonstrating 93.6% accuracy. This technology represents a significant advancement, enhancing the practicality of the structural health monitoring (SHM) system from “point monitoring" to “field monitoring".

Deep learning (DL), a branch of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) is nowadays considered as a core technology of today's Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR or Industry 4.0). Due to its learning capabilities from data, DL technology originated from artificial neural network (ANN), has become a hot topic in the context of computing, and is widely applied in various application areas like healthcare, visual recognition, cybersecurity, and many more. However, building an appropriate DL model is a challenging task, due to the dynamic nature and variations in real-world problems and data. Moreover, the lack of core understanding turns DL methods into black-box machines that hamper development at the standard level. This article presents a structured and comprehensive view on DL techniques including a taxonomy considering various types of real-world tasks like supervised or unsupervised. In our taxonomy, we take into account deep networks for supervised or discriminative learning, unsupervised or generative learning as well as hybrid learning and relevant others. We also summarize real-world application areas where deep learning techniques can be used. Finally, we point out ten potential aspects for future generation DL modeling with research directions. Overall, this article aims to draw a big picture on DL modeling that can be used as a reference guide for both academia and industry professionals.

Deep learning (DL), which is originated from an artificial neural network (ANN), is one of the major technologies of today's smart cybersecurity systems or policies to function in an intelligent manner. Popular deep learning techniques, such as Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN or ConvNet), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) or Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Self-organizing Map (SOM), Auto-Encoder (AE), Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM), Deep Belief Networks (DBN), Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), Deep Transfer Learning (DTL or Deep TL), Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL or Deep RL), or their ensembles and hybrid approaches can be used to intelligently tackle the diverse cybersecurity issues. In this paper, we aim to present a comprehensive overview from the perspective of these neural networks and deep learning techniques according to today's diverse needs. We also discuss the applicability of these techniques in various cybersecurity tasks such as intrusion detection, identification of malware or botnets, phishing, predicting cyber-attacks, e.g. denial of service (DoS), fraud detection or cyber-anomalies, etc. Finally, we highlight several research issues and future directions within the scope of our study in the field. Overall, the ultimate goal of this paper is to serve as a reference point and guidelines for the academia and professionals in the cyber industries, especially from the deep learning point of view.

X-band marine radar captures signal reflected from the sea surface. Theoretical studies indicate that the initial unfiltered signal contains meaningful information including parameters related to wind waves. Traditional methods for estimating significant wave height (SWH) rely on the physical laws describing signal reflection from rough surfaces. However, recent studies suggest the feasibility of employing artificial neural networks (ANNs) for SWH approximation. Both classical and ANN-based approaches necessitate costly in situ data. In this study, we propose generating synthetic radar images with specified wind wave parameters using Fourier-based approach and Pierson–Moskowitz wave spectrum as a viable alternative. We generate synthetic images and use them for unsupervised learning approach to train a convolutional component of an ANN. After that, we train a regression ANN based on the previous convolutional component to obtain SWH back from synthetic images. Then, we apply preliminary trained weights for the same regression model to train SWH approximation on the dataset of real sea clutter images. In this study, we demonstrate the increase in the accuracy of SWH estimation from radar images with the preliminary training on synthetic data.

The prediction of corticosteroid responses in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is crucial in clinical practice, and exploring the role of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted analysis of chest radiographs (CXR) is warranted. This retrospective case-control study involving hospitalized COVID-19 patients treated with corticosteroids was conducted from September 4th, 2021, to August 30th, 2022. The primary endpoint of the study was corticosteroid responsiveness, defined as the advancement of two or more of the eight-categories-ordinal scale. Serial abnormality scores for consolidation and pleural effusion on CXR were obtained using a commercial AI-based software based on days from onset of symptoms. Amongst the 258 participants included in the analysis, 147 (57%) were male. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that high pleural effusion score at 6–9 days from onset of symptoms (adjusted odds ratio of [aOR]: 1.022, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.003-1.042, p=0.020) and consolidation scores up to 9 days from onset of symptoms (0-2 days: aOR: 1.025, 95% CI: 1.006-1.045, p=0.010; 3-5 days: aOR: 1.03 95% CI: 1.011-1.051, p=0.002; 6-9 days: aOR; 1.052, 95% CI: 1.015-1.089, p=0.005) were associated with an unfavorable corticosteroid response. AI-generated scores could help intervene in the use of corticosteroids in COVID-19 patients who would not benefit from them

In the field of orthodontics, providing patients with accurate treatment time estimates is of utmost importance. As orthodontic practices continue to evolve and embrace new advancements, incorporating machine learning (ML) methods becomes increasingly valuable in improving orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This study aimed to develop a novel ML model capable of predicting the orthodontic treatment duration based on essential pre-treatment variables. Patients who completed comprehensive orthodontic treatment at the Indiana University School of Dentistry were included in this retrospective study. Fifty-seven pre-treatment variables were collected and used to train and test 9 different ML models. The performance of each model was assessed using descriptive statistics, intraclass correlation coefficients, and one-way analysis of variance tests. Random Forest, Lasso, and Elastic Net were found to be the most accurate, with a mean absolute error of 7.27 months in predicting treatment duration. Extraction decision, COVID, intermaxillary relationship, lower incisor position, and additional appliances were identified as important predictors of treatment duration. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of ML in predicting orthodontic treatment duration using pre-treatment variables.

Advanced technologies have had a transformative impact on education. In this paper, we explored the current status and future outlook of the use of AI-supported multimodal extended reality for human performance. Using a systematic scoping review design and a machine learning-based semi-automatic approach supplemented by pattern review, we derived several insights into AI-supported multimodal extended reality for human performance. Text mining and topic modeling revealed an optimal twenty-six topics from the included studies. These classifications are salient in the extended reality technologies used (i.e., virtual and augmented reality), the multimodal techniques involved (i.e., haptic, eye, and brain tracking), and the AI leveraged (i.e., machine learning accuracy). Through pattern review, we distilled topical patterns on 1) Goals and Outcomes of AI-supported Multimodal Extended Reality for Human Performance; 2) Disentangling the Dynamics of User Interactions in Virtual Environments with Multimodal Strategies; 3) Synergistic Multimodality with Emerging AI Technologies Using Machine Learning, LLMs, and VLMs; 4) Fostering Engaging, Interactive and Immersive Human Experiences through Ambient Intelligence. These nuanced details in AI-supported multimodal extended reality are emerging, yet not established enough to be classified through text mining and topic modeling. We discussed the implications of these findings for AI-supported multimodal extended reality for human performance in future research and practice.

In cardiology, AI techniques have revolutionized the field of cardiac diagnosis, enabling the detection and prediction of cardiovascular diseases to be more accurate and efficient. This article provides an overview of machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks as they pertain to cardiac diagnosis. We will investigate how these techniques harness the power of data and algorithms to analyze complex patterns in cardiac data, thereby facilitating early detection, risk assessment, and treatment decision-making.
