Alzheimer’s disease has become a major concern in the healthcare domain as it is growing rapidly. Many researches have been conducted to detect it from MRI images through various deep-learning approaches. However, the problem of the availability of medical data and the privacy of the patients still exists. To mitigate this issue in Alzheimer’s disease detection, we have implemented the federated approach which is found to be more efficient, robust, and consistent compared to the conventional approach. For this, we needed deep excavation on various orientations of MRI images and transfer learning architectures. Then, we utilized the publicly available two datasets (OASIS, and ADNI), and designed various cases to evaluate the performance of the federated approach. In almost all of them, the federated approach achieved better accuracy and sensitivity. In distinguishing between two classes equally, the capability of the models was better in the found model when trained with federated approach compared to the conventional approach. In this approach. MobileNet, which is a low-cost transfer learning architecture, achieved the highest 95.24%, 81.94%, and 83.97% accuracy in OASIS, ADNI, and merged (ADNI+OASIS) test set, which was way higher than the achieved performance in Conventional approach. Moreover, in this approach, only the weights of the model were shared which keeps the original MRI images in their respective hospital or institutions, mitigating the privacy concern in the healthcare domain.

The classification of vessel types in SAR imagery is of crucial importance for maritime applications. However, the ability to use real SAR imagery for deep learning classification is limited, due to the general lack of such data and/or the labor-intensive nature of labeling them. Simulating SAR images can overcome these limitations, allowing the generation of an infinite number of datasets. In this contribution, we present a synthetic SAR imagery dataset with ship wakes, which comprises 46080 images for ten different real vessel models. The variety of simulation parameters includes 16 ship heading directions, 6 ship velocities, 8 wind directions, 2 wind velocities, and 3 incidence angles. In addition, we extensively investigate classification performance for noise-free, noisy, and denoised ship wake scenes. We utilize the standard AlexNet architecture and employ training from scratch. To achieve the best classification performance, we conduct Bayesian optimization to determine hyperparameters. Results demonstrate that the classification of vessel types based on their SAR signatures is highly efficient, with maximum accuracies of 96.16%, 92.7%, and 93.59%, when training using noise-free, noisy, and denoised datasets respectively. Thus, we conclude that the best strategy in practical applications should be to train convolutional neural networks on denoised SAR datasets. The results show that the versatility of the SAR simulator can open up new horizons in the application of machine learning to a variety of SAR platforms.

Body-Esteem Scale is an assessment tool for adolescents and adults that evaluate three dimensions of self-evaluations of one’s body. Body-Esteem Scale has been translated and validated in some countries since America down to Europe. Lack of translation and reliability evidence in Portugal was detected. This study aimed to translate and test the validity and reliability of the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA) in students in the context of Portuguese higher educa-tion. A total of 173 students (60.7% are female) with a mean age of 19.7 (standard deviation = 2.2) years participated. Categorical Principal Component Analysis was used to assess the underlying dimensions of BESAA. Construct validity was evaluated through correlation with the Appearance Schemas Inventory – Revised and a three-factor model (“Appearance”, ‘‘Weight’’ and “Attribu-tion’’) was established. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to verify the construct validity of the instrument. Items that had factor weights (λ)<.40 were removed, as well as those that were considered redundant by the modification indices estimated by the Lagrange Multipliers (LM) method (LM>11, p<.001). We observed high correlations between theoretically similar factors, and low correlations between different factors. The Portuguese BESAA showed adequate validity and reliability.

The effect of the strain rate on damage in carbon black filled EPDM stretched during single and multiple uniaxial loading is investigated. This has been performed by analysing the stress-strain response, the evolution of damage by Digital Image Correlation (DIC), the associated dissipative heat source by InfraRed thermography (IR), and the chains network damage by swelling. The strain rates were selected to cover the transition from quasi-static to medium strain rate conditions. In single loading conditions, the increase of the strain rate yields in a preferential damage of the filler network while rubber network is preserved. Such damage is accompanied by a stress softening and an adiabatic heat source rise. Conversely, increasing the strain rate in cyclic loading conditions yields in a filler network accommodation and a high self-heating whose combined effect is proposed as a possible cause of the ability of filled EPDM to limit damage, by reducing cavities opening during loading and favoring cavities closing upon unloading.

In research applications across several areas, noise removal is indispensable for accuracy of final results. Noise is caused due to physical principals, such as background electronic noise, quantum effect, and wave rebound effect to name a few. Noise removal can help improve results in medical, astronomy, defense, and numerous other fields. Addressing this limitation would result in potentially low cost, automatic, and reliable systems. In this paper, a generalized new approach i.e. Multi-Frame Noise Removal (MFNR) is proposed for noise removal. Given any type of data, the probability density function (PDF) of the noise can be determined. Herein, we extracted the noise PDF parameters using KDE (Kernel Density Estimation). Because the data is corrupted by “deterministic” noise, hence can be cleaned. This could be used as a general purpose noise removal tool. The data point with same position in multiple frames helps us determine the noise PDF characteristics and hence making it possible to remove noise. The conventional wisdom which states that noise removal and detail preservation are contrary to each other is not true for MFNR. Experimental results validate our proposed method which showed practically complete noise reduction based on number of frames used, as compared to existing benchmark methods.

In this paper, our goal is to perform a virtual restoration of an ancient coin from its image. The present work is the first one to propose this problem, and it is motivated by two key promising applications. The first of these emerges from the recently recognised dependence of automatic image based coin type matching on the condition of the imaged coins; the algorithm introduced herein could be used as a pre-processing step, aimed at overcoming the aforementioned weakness. The second application concerns the utility both to professional and hobby numismatists of being able to visualise and study an ancient coin in a state closer to its original (minted) appearance. To address the conceptual problem at hand, we introduce a framework which comprises a deep learning based method using Generative Adversarial Networks, capable of learning the range of appearance variation of different semantic elements artistically depicted on coins, and a complementary algorithm used to collect, correctly label, and prepare for processing a large numbers of images (here 100,000) of ancient coins needed to facilitate the training of the aforementioned learning method. Empirical evaluation performed on a withheld subset of the data demonstrates extremely promising performance of the proposed methodology and shows that our algorithm correctly learns the spectra of appearance variation across different semantic elements, and despite the enormous variability present reconstructs the missing (damaged) detail while matching the surrounding semantic content and artistic style.

The lack of defect image data is one of the main factors affecting the accuracy of supervised deep learning-based defect detection models. In response to the insufficient training data of defect images with complex backgrounds such as rust and surface oil leakage in substation equipment, leading to poor performance of the detection model, this paper proposed a novel adversarial deep learning model for substation defect generation: ADD-GAN. In comparison to existing generative adversarial networks, this model generates defect images based on effectively segmented local areas of substation equipment images, avoiding image distortion caused by global style changes. Additionally, the model utilizes a joint discriminator for overall image and defect image to address the issue of low attention to local defect areas, thereby improving the loss of image features. This enhances the overall quality of generated images as well as locally generated defect images, ultimately improving image realism. Experimental results demonstrate that the YOLOV7 object detection model trained on the dataset generated using the ADD-GAN method achieves an mAP of 81.5% on the test dataset, representing an improvement of 9.6% over the original dataset, 5.7% over traditional augmentation methods, and 7% over typical adversarial deep learning methods. This confirms that the ADD-GAN method can generate a high-fidelity dataset of substation equipment defects.

Early detection of cervical cancer is the need of the hour to stop the fatality from this disease. There have been various CAD approaches in the past that promise to detect cervical cancer in an early stage, each of them having some constraints.This study proposes a novel ensemble deep learning model, VLR (variable learning rate), aimed at enhancing the accuracy of cervical cancer classification. The model architecture integrates VGG16, Logistic Regression, and ResNet50, combining their strengths in an offbeat ensemble design. VLR learns in two ways: firstly, by dynamic weights from three base models, each of them trained separately; secondly, by attention mechanisms used in the dense layer of the base models. Hyperparameter tuning is applied to further reduce loss, fine tune the model’s performance, and maximize classification accuracy. We performed K-fold cross-validation on VLR to evaluate any improvements in metric values resulting from hyperparameter fine tuning. We have also validated our model on images captured in three different solutions and on a secondary dataset. Our proposed VLR model outperformed existing methods in cervical cancer classification, achieving a remarkable training accuracy of 99.95% and a testing accuracy of 99.89%.

Railway transportation is one of the main modes of long-distance coal transportation, and it is inevitable to cause environmental pollution during the transportation process. In order to improve the environment along the railway and increase the utilization rate of coal resources, this paper proposes a detection algorithm for scattered coal solidification layer during transportation based on the YOLO v8 model, and designs an intelligent recognition model suitable for coal solidification layer detection devices by combining fluorescence detection methods. Through experimental analysis, the model meets the requirements of practical detection and plays a crucial role in environmental protection, with strong practical application value.

To ensure the security of highly sensitive remote sensing images (RSI) during their transmission, it is essential to implement effective content security protection methods. Generally, secure distribution schemes for remote sensing images often employ cryptographic techniques. However, sending encrypted data exposes communication behavior, which poses significant security risks to the distribution of remote sensing images. Therefore, this paper introduces deep information hiding to achieve secure distribution of remote sensing images, which can serve as an effective alternative in certain specific scenarios. Specifically, the Deep Information Hiding for RSI Distribution (hereinafter referred to as DIH4RSID) based on encoder-decoder network architecture with Parallel Attention Mechanisms (PAM) by adversarial training was proposed. Our model is constructed with four main components: a preprocessing network (PN), an embedding network (EN), a revealing network (RN) and a discriminating network (DN). The PN module is primarily based on Inception to capture more details of RSI and targets of different scales. The PAM module obtains features in two spatial directions to realize feature enhancement and context information integration. The experimental results indicate that our proposed algorithm achieves relatively higher visual quality and secure level compared to related methods. Additionally, after extracting the concealed content from hidden images, the average classification accuracy is unaffected.

To support pathologists in breast tumor diagnosis, deep learning plays a crucial role in the development of histological whole slide image (WSI) classification methods. However, automatic classification is challenging due to the high-resolution data and the scarcity of representative training data. To tackle these limitations, we propose a deep learning-based breast tumor gigapixel histological image multi-classifier integrated with a high-resolution data augmentation model to process the entire slide by exploring its local and global information and generating its different synthetic versions. The key idea is to perform classification and augmentation in feature latent space, reducing the computational cost while preserving the class label of the input. We adopt a deep learning-based multi-classification method and evaluate the contribution given by a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network-based data augmentation model on the classifier’s performance for three tumor classes in the BRIGHT Challenge dataset. The proposed method has allowed us to achieve an average F1 equal to 69.5, considering only the WSI dataset of the Challenge. The results are comparable to those obtained by the Challenge winning method (71.6), also trained on the annotated tumor region dataset of the Challenge.

With the development of remote sensing satellite technology for Earth observation, remote sensing stereo images have been used for three-dimensional reconstruction in various fields, such as urban planning and construction. However, remote sensing images often include noise, occluded regions, weakly textured areas and repeated textures, which can lead to reduced accuracy in stereo matching and affect the quality of the 3D reconstruction results. To reduce the impact of complex scenes in remote sensing images on stereo matching and to ensure both speed and accuracy, we propose a new end-to-end stereo matching network based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The proposed stereo matching network can learn features at different scales from the original images and construct cost volumes with varying scales to obtain richer scale information. Additionally, when constructing the cost volume, we introduce negative disparity to adapt to the common occurrence of both negative and nonnegative disparities in remote sensing stereo image pairs. For cost aggregation, we employ a 3D convolution-based encoder-decoder structure that allows the network to adaptively aggregate information. Before feature aggregation, we also introduce an attention module to retain more valuable feature information, enhance feature representation, and obtain a higher-quality disparity map. By training on the publicly available US3D dataset, we obtain the accuracy that 1.115 pixel in end-point error (EPE) and 5.32% in the error pixel ratio (D1) on the test dataset, and the inference speed is 92 ms. Comparing our model with existing state-of-the-art models, we achieve higher accuracy, and the network is beneficial for the three-dimensional reconstruction of remote sensing images.

Near Earth Asteroids represent potential threats to human life because their trajectories may bring them in the proximity of the Earth. Monitoring these objects could help predict future impact events, but such efforts are hindered by the large numbers of objects that pass through the Earth’s vicinity. Additionally, there is also the problem of distinguishing asteroids from other objects in the night sky, which implies sifting through large sets of telescope image data. Within this context, we believe that employing machine learning techniques could greatly improve the detection process by sorting out the most likely asteroid candidates to be reviewed by human experts. At the moment, the use of machine learning techniques is still limited in the field of astronomy and the main goal of the present paper is to study the effectiveness of deep CNNs for the classification of astronomical objects, asteroids in this particular case, by comparing some of the well-known deep convolutional neural networks, including InceptionV3, Xception, InceptionResNetV2 and ResNet152V2. We have applied transfer learning and fine-tuning on these pre-existing deep convolutional networks and from the results that we have obtained one can see the potential of using deep convolutional neural networks in the process of asteroid classification. The InceptionV3 model has the best results in the asteroid class, meaning that by using it, we loose the least number of valid asteroids.

The unique characteristics of frescoes on overseas Chinese buildings can attest to the integration and historical background of Chinese and Western cultures. Reasonable analysis and preservation of overseas Chinese frescoes can provide sustainable development for culture and history. This research adopts the image analysis technology based on artificial intelligence, and proposes a ResNet-34 model and method integrating transfer learning. This deep learning model can identify and classify the source of the frescoes of the emigrants, and can effectively deal with the problems such as the small number of fresco images on the emigrants' buildings, poor quality, difficulty in feature extraction, and similar pattern text and style. The experimental results show that the training process of the model proposed in this article is stable. On the constructed Jiangmen and Haikou fresco JHD datasets, the final accuracy is 98.41%, and the recall rate is 98.53%. The above evaluation indicators are superior to classic models such as AlexNet, GoogLeNet, and VGGNet. It can be seen that the model in this article has strong generalization ability and is not prone to overfitting. It can effectively identify and classify the cultural connotations and regions of frescoes.

Shape of supracondylar fracture of the humeral of pediatric patients is analysed with Procrustes method. XR–images of fractures are considered both in anterio-posterior (AP) view (66 images) and in a lateral (L) view (24 images). Applying Procrustes method for both views mean images are constructed and compared. Variability of shapes is quantified with a shape principal component analysis. Non-parametric tests (permutational and bootstrap) do not indicate statistical difference between Procrustes mean shapes in anterio-posterior and lateral projections. It is shown, however, that AP and L shapes of humeral fractures differ in their variability quantified by shape principal components.

CNN-based off-the-shelf features have shown themselves as a good baseline for trademark retrieval. However, in recent years, the computer vision area was transitioning from CNNs to a new architecture – Vision Transformer. In this paper, we investigate the performance of off-the-shelf features extracted with vision transformers and explore the effects of pre, post-processing, and pre-training on big datasets. We propose a method of joint usage of global and local features, which leverages the best aspects of both approaches. Experimental results on METU Trademark Dataset show that off-the-shelf features extracted with ViT-based models outperform off-the-shelf features from CNN-based models. The proposed method achieves the mAP value of 31.23, surpassing previous state-of-the-art results. We assume that the proposed approach for the trademark similarity evaluation will allow one to improve the protection of such data with the help of artificial intelligence methods. Moreover, this approach will allow one to identify cases of unfair use of such data and form an evidence base for litigation.

Translation of basic animal research to find effective methods of diagnosing and treating human neurological disorders requires parallel analysis infrastructures. Small animals such as mice provide exploratory animal disease models. However, many interventions developed using small animal models fail to translate to human use due to physical or biological differences. Recently, large-animal minipigs have emerged in neuroscience due to both brain similarity and economic advantages. Medical image processing is a crucial part of research as it allows researchers to monitor their experiments and understand disease development. However, although many algorithms are created and optimized for MR analysis of human data, those tools are not directly applicable or sufficiently sensitive to measure minipig data. In this work, we propose PigSNIPE - a pipeline for the automated handling, processing, and analyzing of large-scale data sets of minipig MR images. The pipeline allows for image registration, AC-PC alignment, landmark detection, skull stripping, brainmasks and intracranial volume segmentation (DICE 0.98), tissue segmentation (DICE 0.82), and caudate-putamen brain segmentation (DICE 0.8) in under two minutes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first automated pipeline tool aimed at large animal images.

Intracranial hemorrhage is a serious medical problem that requires rapid and often intensive medical care. Identifying the location and type of any hemorrhage present is a critical step in the treatment of the patient. Diagnosis requires an urgent procedure, and the detection of hemorrhage is a difficult and time-consuming process for human experts. In this paper, we propose methods based on EfficientDet’s deep-learning technology that can be applied to the diagnosis of hemorrhages and thus become a decision-support system. Our proposal is two-fold. On the one hand, the proposed technique classifies slices of computed tomography scans for the presence hemorrhage or its lack, achieving 92.7% accuracy and 0.978 ROC-AUC. On the other hand, our methodology provides visual explanations of the classification chosen using the Grad-CAM methodology.

Diatom identification and counting by light microscopy is a fundamental method in ecological and water quality investigations. Here we present a new variant of this method based on “digital virtual slides”, and compare it to the traditional, non-digitized light microscopy workflow. We analysed three replicates of six samples using two methods: 1) working directly on a light microscope (the “traditional” counting method), and 2) preparing “virtual digital slides” by high-resolution slide scanning and subsequently identifying and labelling individual valves or frustules using a web browser-based image annotation platform (the digital method). Both methods led to comparable results in terms of species richness, diatom indices and diatom community composition. Although counting by digital microscopy was slightly more time consuming, our experience points out that the digital workflow can not only improve the transparency and reusability of diatom counts but it can also increase taxonomic precision. The introduced digital workflow can also be applied for taxonomic inter-expert calibration through the web, and for producing training image sets for deep-learning-based diatom identification, making it a promising and versatile alternative or extension to traditional light microscopic diatom analyses in the future.

Spectrometers have a wide range of applications ranging from optical to non-optical spectroscopy. The need for compact, portable, and user-friendly spectrometers has been the pivot of attention from small laboratories to the industrial scale. Here, the Czerny Turner configuration-based optical spectrometer simulation design is carried out using ZEMAX OpticStudio. A compact and low-cost optical spectrometer in the visible range has been developed by using diffraction grating as a dispersive element and USB-type WebCAM CCD (Charge-coupled device) as a detector instead of an expensive commercial diffraction grating and detector. Using National Instruments LabVIEW, data acquisition, processing, and displaying techniques are made possible. We have employed different virtual images in LabVIEW programs to collect the pixel-to-pixel information and wavelength-intensity information from the image captured using the WebCAM CCD. Finally, we have shown that the OpticStudio-based spectrometer and experimental measurements of the developed spectrometer are in good agreement.

This paper presents a robust method based on graph topology to find the topologically correct and consistent subset of inter-robot relative pose measurements for multi-robot map fusion. However, the absence of good prior gives a severe challenge to distinguish the inliers and outliers, and wrong loop closures can seriously corrupt the fused global map. Existing works mainly rely on the consistency of spatial dimension to select inter-robot measurements, which does not always hold. In this paper, we propose a fast inter-robot loop closure selection method that integrates the consistency and topology relationship of measurements, which both conform to the continuity characteristics of similar scenes and spatiotemporal consistency. The traditional high-dimensional consistency matrix is decomposed into the sub-matrix blocks corresponding to the overlapping trajectory area. Building on this logic, a clustering method involving topology correctness of inter-robot loop closures is introduced to split the entire measurement set into multiple clusters. We define the weight function to find the maximum cardinality subset with topologically correct and consistent, then convert the weight function to a maximum clique problem in the graph and solve it. We evaluate the performance of our method in a simulation and in a real-world experiment. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, the results show that our method can achieve competitive performance in accuracy while reducing computation time by 75%.

Boosted by the progress in deep learning, Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR) has gained a lot of interest in the Remote Sensing community, who sees it as an oportunity to compensate for satellite's ever-limited spatial resolution with respect to end users needs. While there has been a great amount of work on network architures in the latest years, deep learning based SISR in remote sensing is still limited by the availability of the large training sets it requires. The lack of publicly available large datasets with the required variability in terms of landscapes and seasons pushes researchers to simulate their own dataset by means of downsampling. This may impair the applicability of the trained model on real world data at the target input resolution. In this paper, we propose an open-data licenced dataset composed of 10m and 20m cloud-free surface reflectance patches from Sentinel-2, with their reference spatially-registered surface reflectance patches at 5 meter resolution acquired on the same day by the VENµS satellite. This dataset covers 29 locations on earth with a total of 132 955 patches of 256x256 pixels at 5 meters resolution, and can be used for the training of super-resolution algorithms to bring the spatial resolution of 8 of the Sentinel-2 bands down to 5 meters.

A convolutional neural network (CNN) is sometimes understood as a black box in the sense that while it can approximate any function, studying its structure will not give us any insights into the nature of the function being approximated. In other terms, the discriminative ability does not reveal much about the latent representation of a network. This research aims to establish a framework for interpreting the CNNs by profiling them in terms of interpretable visual concepts and verifying them by means of Integrated Gradient. We also ask the question, "Do different input classes have a relationship or are they unrelated?" For instance, could there be an overlapping set of highly active neurons to identify different classes? Could there be a set of neurons that are useful for one input class whereas misleading for a different one? Intuition answers these questions positively, implying the existence of a structured set of neurons inclined to a particular class. Knowing this structure has significant values; it provides a principled way for identifying redundancies across the classes. Here the interpretability profiling has been done by evaluating the correspondence between individual hidden neurons and a set of human-understandable visual semantic concepts. We also propose an integrated gradient-based class-specific relevance mapping approach that takes the spatial position of the region of interest in the input image. Our relevance score verifies the interpretability scores in terms of neurons tuned to a particular concept/class. Further, we perform network ablation and measure the performance of the network based on our approach.

With the recent coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) online sales of clothing retail have become a necessity to survive in the market. It is for this reason that the objective of the research was to know the purchase intention of clothing by young consumers through the online channel of small and micro companies (MiPyMe) located in the countries of Mexico, Colombia and Peru. To do this, using a structural equations model, it was intended to analyze the relationships between the variables trust, satisfaction, perceived value, quality of interaction and image in the electronic context as antecedent variables of online purchase intention, in accordance with the theoretical framework. 638 surveys were applied to young consumers in Mexico, Colombia and Peru. Sociodemographic characteristics included gender, age, country, and knowledge of a MiPyMe online clothing store. The results reveal that, of the total of young people surveyed, 62.7% stated that they did not know of any online clothing store of a MiPyMe. The contrasting of the hypotheses indicates that the quality of interaction directly and positively influences perceived value, that the image directly and positively influences the satisfaction and purchase intention of the consumer of the MiPyMe of Colombia, Mexico and Peru. These results may be useful for entrepreneurs in this business sector to rethink their online business strategies, as well as for the governments of these nations to promote this sector with training and specialized technical assistance.

Background: Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a model organism emerged for the study of human cancer. Compared with the murine model, the zebrafish model has several properties ideal for personalized therapies. The transparency of the zebrafish embryos and the development of the pigment-deficient “casper” zebrafish line give the capacity to directly observe cancer formation and progression in the living animal. Automatic quantification of cellular proliferation in vivo is critical to the development of personalized medicine. Methods: A new methodology was defined to automatically quantify the cancer cellular evolution. ZFTool was developed to establish a base threshold that eliminates the embryo auto-fluorescence and automatically measures the area and intensity of GFP (green-fluorescent protein) marked cells and define a proliferation index. Results: Proliferation index automatically computed on different targets demonstrates the efficiency of ZFTool to provide a good automatic quantification of cancer cell evolution and dissemination. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that ZFTool is a reliable tool for the automatic quantification of the proliferation index, being a measure of cancer mass evolution in zebrafish eliminating the influence of its autofluorescence.

The present work proposed a low-cost portable device as an enabling technology for Smart Farms using multispectral imaging and Machine Learning in soil texture. Clay is an important factor for the verification and monitoring of soil use due to its fast reaction to chemical and surface changes. The system developed uses the analysis of reflectance in wavebands for clay prediction. The selection of each wavelength is performed through an LED lamp panel. A NoIR microcamera controlled by a Raspberry Pi device is employed to acquire the image and unfold it in RGB histograms. Results showed an good prediction performance with R2 of 0.96, RMSEC of 3.66% and RMSECV of 16.87%. The high portability allows the equipment to be used in a field providing strategic information related to soil sciences.

This article described the technology of determining earthquake epicenter with radar remote sensing on the example of Sentinel-1A/B. To determine the epicenter of the earthquake, the Earth's crust displacements were analyzed using radar remote sensing data obtained for the ascending and descending flight orbits. Coordinates of Earthquake epicenters were found according to line-of-sight displacement images via its maximum value. Displacement of the Earth's crust was obtained by processing in the GMTSAR package in the VirtualBox virtual machine of the Linux Ubuntu 16.04 operation system. Two earthquakes that occurred in 2020 were studied to determine the accuracy of finding epicenters using the ascending and descending orbits Sentinel-1A/B. These earthquakes occurred in Western Xizang, China, and Doganyol, Turkey. The maximum deviation from the officially registered epicenter coordinates was 15.38 km for Doganyol and 3.2 km for the Western Xizang earthquake. The negative displacement was 90 mm for Doganyol and 50 mm for Western Xizang.

The color and NIR spectrum are key to build an oil estimation model, thus it requires individual olives clustering before the Sohlext oil extraction method can be applied. The objective was to analyze an OC estimation model of individual olives, based on cluster of similar color and NIR spectrum in different combination of the first and/or the second season. This study was performed with Chilean Arbequina olives in 2016 and 2017. The descriptor of the cluster consisted of the 3 color channels of c1, c2, c3 color model plus 11 reflectance points between 1710 and 1735 nm of each olive, normalized with the Z-score index. Clusters of similar color and NIR spectrum were formed with the k-means++ algorithm, leaving a sufficient amount of olives to be able to perform the Sohlext analysis of OC, as reference value. The estimation models were based on the Support Vector Machine. The test was carried out with the Leave One-Out Cross Validation in different training-testing combinations. The best model predicted the OC with 6% and 13%deviation respect to the real value in one season by itself and when one season tested with another season, respectively. The use of clustering in estimation model is discussed.

Precision agriculture is a technology used by farmers to help food sustainability amidst growing population. One of the tools of precision agriculture is yield monitoring, which helps a farmer manage his production. Yield monitoring is usually done during harvest, however it could also be done early in the growing season. Early prediction of yield, specifically for fruit trees, aids the farmer in the marketing of their product and assists in managing production logistics such as labor requirement and storage needs. In this study, a machine vision system is developed to estimate fruit yield early in the season. The machine vision system uses a color camera to capture images of fruit trees during the full bloom period. An image segmentation algorithm based on an artificial neural network was developed to recognize and count the blossoms on the tree. The artificial neural network segmentation algorithm uses color information and position as input. The resulting correlation between the blossom count and the actual number of fruits on the tree shows the potential of this method to be used for early prediction of fruit yield.

3D-mapping-aided (3DMA) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning that improves positioning performance in dense urban areas has been under development in the recent years, but it still faces many challenges. This paper details a new algorithm that explores the potential of using building boundary for positioning. Rather than applying complex simulations to analyze and correct signal reflections by buildings, the approach utilizes a convolutional neural network to differentiate between the sky and building in a sky-pointing fisheye image. A new skymask matching algorithm is then proposed to match the segmented fisheye images with skymasks generated from a 3D building model. Each matched skymask holds a latitude and longitude coordinate to determine the precise location of the fisheye image. The results are then compared with the conventional GNSS and advanced 3DMA GNSS positioning methods. The aims of the proposed algorithm are to increase positioning and heading accuracy in a rich urban environment.

Nutrient estimation in forest ecosystems through satellite images allows us to obtain accurate data, starting with data transformation from forest stands and the existing relationship with the spectral information of the image through modeling. The objective of the study was to quantify and validate the content of C, N, H in aboveground tree biomass in managed stands using spatial modeling and satellite images. This study was conducted during 2017-2018 in managed forest stands in San Juan Lachao, Oaxaca, Mexico. Fifteen 400 m2 experimental sites were selectively established, using a completely randomized experimental design of five silvicultural treatments with three replications. As part of data preprocessing, normality and homogeneity of variances assumptions were checked using the Shapiro-Wilk and Bartlett tests, respectively. From the pixels, data of the average of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) that surrounded the sampling sites were contrasted against the data obtained from forest inventory and the regression models to estimate C, N, H and biomass were generated. Models were validated by NDVI. With the models we estimated 0.95 t ha-1 biomass, which contains between 0.61 and 0.63 of C, 0.44-0.46 of N and 0.24 of H. The models generated had coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.85 to 0.87, which are significant parameters (p ≤ 0.0001). These results confirm that the use of Sentinel satellite images in the estimation of these elements in forest ecosystems based on the relationship between data inventory and the NDVI is highly reliable.

In order to realize rapid and nondestructive monitoring of wheat biomass in field, field experiments based on different densities, nitrogen fertilizer and variety treatments were studied. RGB images of wheat in the main growth stage were obtained by UAV, and wheat color and texture feature indices were obtained by image processing, and wheat biomass was obtained by field sampling in the same period. Then the relationship between different color and texture feature indices and wheat biomass was analyzed to select the color and texture feature index suitable for wheat biomass estimation. The results showed that there was a high correlation between image color index and wheat biomass in different stages, and most of them reached a very significant correlation level. However, the correlation between image texture feature index and wheat biomass was poor, only a few indexes reached significant or extremely significant correlation level. Based on the above results, the color indices with the highest correlation to wheat biomass or the combining indices of color and texture feature in different growth stage were used to construct estimation model of wheat biomass. The models were validated using independently measured biomass data, and the correlation between simulated and measured values reached the significant level, RMSE were smaller. This indicated that the estimated results by the models were reliable and accurate. It also showed that the estimation models of wheat biomass combined with color and texture feature indices of UAV image were better than the single color index models. The results would provide a new method for real-time monitoring of wheat field growth and biomass estimation.

The objective to fast-track the mapping and registration of large numbers of unrecorded land rights globally, leads to the experimental application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the domain of land administration, and specifically the application of automated visual cognition techniques for cadastral mapping tasks. In this research, we applied and compared the ability of rule-based systems within Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA), as opposed to human analysis, to extract visible cadastral boundaries from Very high resolution (VHR) World View-2 image, in both rural and urban settings. From our experiments, machine-based techniques were able to automatically delineate a good proportion of rural parcels with explicit polygons where the correctness of the automatically extracted boundaries was 47.4% against 74.24% for humans and the completeness of 45% for machine, as against 70.4% for humans. On the contrary, in the urban area, automatic results were counterintuitive: even though urban plots and buildings are clearly marked with visible features such as fences, roads and tacitly perceptible to eyes, automation resulted in geometrically and topologically poorly structured data, that could neither be geometrically compared with human digitised, nor actual cadastral data from the field. These results provide an updated snapshot with regards to the performance of contemporary machine-drive feature extraction techniques compared to conventional manual digitising.

In the fashion field, the use of electroplated small metal parts such as studs, clips and buckles is widespread. The plate is often made of precious metal, such as gold or platinum. Due to the high cost of these materials, it is strategically relevant and of primary importance for manufacturers to avoid any waste by depositing only the strictly necessary amount of material. To this aim, Companies need to be aware of the overall number of items to be electroplated so that it is possible to properly set the parameters driving the galvanic process. Accordingly, the present paper describes a Machine Vision-based method able to automatically count small metal parts arranged on a galvanic frame. The devised method relies on the definition of a proper acquisition system and on the development of image processing-based routines. Such a system is then implemented on a counting machine is meant to be adopted in the galvanic industrial practice to properly define a suitable set or working parameters (such as current, voltage and deposition time) for the electroplating machine and, thereby, to assure the desired plate thickness from one side and to avoid material waste on the other.

Spike shape and morphometric characteristics are among the key characteristics of cultivated cereals associated with their productivity. Identification of the genes controlling these traits requires morphometric data harvesting and analysis for numerous plants, which is automatable using technologies of digital image analysis. A method for wheat spike morphometry utilizing 2D image analysis is proposed. Digital images are acquired in two variants: a spike on a table (one projection) or fixed with a clip (four projections). The method identifies spike and awns in the image and estimates their quantitative characteristics (area in image, length, width, circularity, etc.). Models of sections, quadrilaterals, and radial model are proposed for describing spike shape. Parameters of these models are used to predict spike shape type (spelt, normal, or compact) by machine learning. The mean error in spike density prediction for the images in one projection is 4.61 (~18%) versus 3.33 (~13%) for the parameters obtained using four projections. F1 measure in automated spike classification into three types is 0.78 using logistic regression (one projection) and 0.85 using random forest method (four projections). Global food security for the increasing world population not only requires increased sustainable production of food but a significant reduction in pre- and post-harvest waste. The timing of when a fruit is harvested is critical for reducing waste along the supply chain and increasing fruit quality for consumers. The early in field assessment of fruit ripeness and prediction of the harvest date and yield by non-destructive technologies have the potential to revolutionize farming practices and enable the consumer to eat the tastiest and freshest fruit possible. A variety of non-destructive techniques have been applied to estimate the ripeness or maturity but not all of them are applicable for in situ (field or glasshouse) assessment. This review focuses on the non-destructive methods which are promising, or have already been, applied to the pre-harvest in field measurement including colorimetry, visible imaging, spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging. Machine learning and regression models used in assessing ripeness are also discussed.

Sports video analysis is an interesting and emerging field in the domain of computer vision. It has become a very popular subject among scholars all over the world in the last decade due to the need of automated classification of events such as offsides, in/out situations, goals and so on. The most important problem in sports video analysis is detection and tracking of ball and players. Extraction of court lines is also another important problem since it is necessary in the classification of aforementioned events. In this study, considering some of the previous work on the subject, we develop a method for tracking the ball and players in tennis videos where the camera position and orientation is supposed fixed.

Edge detection is one of the key issues in the field of computer vision and remote sensing image analysis. Although many different edge-detection methods have been proposed for gray-scale, color, and multispectral images, they still face difficulties when extracting edge features from hyperspectral images (HSIs) that contain a large number of bands with very narrow gap in the spectral domain. Inspired by the clustering characteristic of the gravitation, a novel edge-detection algorithm for HSIs is presented in this paper. In the proposed method, we first construct a joint feature space by combining the spatial and spectral features. Each pixel of HSI is assumed to be a celestial object in the joint feature space, which exerts gravitational force to each of its neighboring pixel. Accordingly, each object travels in the joint feature space until it reaches a stable equilibrium. At the equilibrium, the image is smoothed and the edges are enhanced, where the edge pixels can be easily distinguished by calculating the gravitational potential energy. The proposed edge-detection method is tested on several benchmark HSIs and the obtained results were compared with those of three state-of-the-art approaches. The experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed method

Recent developments in microfluidics and biomaterials have enabled the creation of organs-on-chips (OoCs), which provide a controlled and lifelike in vitro microenvironment resembling an actual organ. Organ-on-a-chip technology offers a tremendous opportunity for efficient, cost-effective, and ethical drug testing and research. However, the high throughput and large quantities of data these complex microenvironments produce make it difficult for researchers to effectively analyze the data and draw valuable conclusions. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are most aptly positioned to address many of OoC’s challenges because of their ability to interpret microscopic images and facilitate the analytical process. Despite the growing field of AI, there have been a limited number of studies summarizing the various applications of CNNs in OoCs. This review aims to provide 1) an overview of the technology involved with CNNs and OoCs 2) an insight into the state-of-the-art applications of CNNs in OoCs including device parameters, predicting and tracking cell trajectories, super-resolution image segmentation, and image classification, and 3) an overview of existing challenges and opportunities ahead for clinical translation of this technology. Various applications of CNNs have been classified by the type of task. Different CNN models such as Faster R-CNNs, fully convolutional networks (FCNs), and Mask R-CNNs are explained and highlighted. This review article can be used as a resource for a better understanding of the potential of CNNs in biomedical research and clinical applications, particularly OoCs.

In recent years, demand has been increasing for target detection and tracking from aerial imagery via drones using onboard powered sensors and devices. We propose a very effective method for this application based on a deep learning framework. A state-of-art embedded hardware system empowers small flying robots to carry out the real-time onboard computation necessary for object tracking. Two types of embedded modules were developed: one is designed using a Jetson TX or AGX Xavier, and the other is based on an Intel Neural Compute Stick. These are suitable for real-time onboard computing power on small flying drones with limited space. A comparative analysis of current state-of-art deep-learning-based multi-object detection algorithms was carried out utilizing the designated GPU-based embedded computing modules to obtain detailed metric data about frame rates as well as the computation power. We also introduce an effective target tracking approach for moving objects. The algorithm for tracking moving objects is based on the extension of simple online and real-time tracking. It was developed by integrating a deep-learning-based association metric approach (Deep SORT), which uses a hypothesis tracking methodology with Kalman filtering and a deep-learning-based association metric. In addition, a guidance system that tracks the target position using a GPU-based algorithm is introduced. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms by real-time experiments with a small multi-rotor drone.

Bone fractures are common injuries that require quick and accurate diagnosis to provide the right medical care. The “convolutional neural network” technique relies mostly on manual inspection, by radiologists and can be laborious and prone to error. The objective of this work was to increase the efficiency and accuracy of fracture identification by automating the examination of X-ray images using convolutional neural networks. A “convolutional neural network” model created to detect bone fractures in X-ray images was used in the present study. The model was trained and validated using an extensive dataset of X-ray images, which included both fractured and nonfractured bones. Multiple convolutional layers were used in the “convolutional neural network” architecture for feature extraction, and pooling and fully connected layers were added for classification. The main measures used to assess the model's performance were sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. In regard to identifying bone fractures, the “convolutional neural network”-based model outperformed the conventional technique. With significant gains in sensitivity and specificity, this approach achieved a high accuracy rate and decreased the frequency of false positives and false negatives. We used “convolutional neural network” tool in PyTorch for bone fracture detection and we outlined the important considerations that must be considered when attempting to achieve this goal Additionally, we contrasted every study with our baseline. Here our maximum accuracies were 99.05%, 98.60%, 99.45% and 99.74% for epochs 8, 9, 10 and 11, respectively. These findings highlight the model's ability to improve the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy in clinical settings. Using “convolutional neural network” to identify bone fractures from X-ray images is a promising development in medical imaging. In the end, our method improves patient outcomes by ensuring faster and more reliable fracture diagnosis while also lessening the diagnostic burden on radiologists. Subsequent investigations will focus on incorporating this system into clinical procedures and investigating its utilization in real-time emergency situations. Since there was no medical intervention on human subjects in this investigation, trial registration regulations were not applied.

Discovered as an apparent pattern, a universal relation between geometry and information called the holographic principle has yet to be explained. This relation is unfolded in the present paper. As it is demonstrated there, the origin of the holographic principle lies in the fact that a geometry of physical space has only a finite number of points. Furthermore, it is shown that the puzzlement of the holographic principle can be explained by a magnification of grid cells used to discretize geometrical magnitudes such as areas and volumes into sets of points. To wit, when grid cells of the Planck scale are projected from the surface of the observable universe into its interior, they become enlarged. For that reason, the space inside the observable universe is described by the set of points whose cardinality is equal to the number of points that constitute the universe’s surface.

In the field of 2-D image processing and computer vision, accurately detecting and segmenting objects in scenarios where they overlap or are obscured remains a challenge. This difficulty is worse in the analysis of shoeprints used in forensic investigations because they are embedded in noisy environments such as the ground and can be indistinct. Traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), despite their success in various image analysis tasks, struggle with accurately delineating overlapping objects due to the complexity of segmenting intertwined textures and boundaries against a background of noise. This study introduces employs the YOLO (You Only Look Once) model enhanced by edge detection and image segmentation techniques to improve the detection of overlapping shoeprints. By focusing on the critical boundary information between shoeprint textures and the ground, our method demonstrates improvements in sensitivity and precision, achieving confidence levels above 85% for minimally overlapped images and maintaining above 70% for extensively overlapped instances. Heatmaps of convolution layers were generated to show how the network converges towards successful detection using these enhancements. This research may provide a potential methodology for addressing the broader challenge of detecting multiple overlapping objects against noisy backgrounds.

Utilizing deep learning for semantic segmentation of cropland from remote sensing imagery has become a crucial technique in land surveys. Cropland illustrates diverse morphologies and degrees of fragmentation on the Earth’s surface, underscoring the importance of accurately perceiving the complex boundaries of cropland which are crucial for effective segmentation. This paper introduces a UNet-like boundary-aware compensation model BAFormer. Cropland boundaries typically exhibit rapid transformations in pixel values and texture features, often appearing as high-frequency features in remote-sensing images. To enhance the recognition of these high-frequency features as represented by cropland boundaries, the proposed BAFormer integrates a Feature Adaptive Mixer (FAM) and develops a Deep Wide Large Kernel Multi-Layer Perceptron (DWLK-MLP) to enrich the global and local cropland boundaries features separately. Specifically, FAM adaptively mixes high-frequency and low-frequency features through the advantages of convolution and self-attention; DWLK-MLP expands the convolutional receptive field by deeply decomposing large kernel convolutions. The efficacy of BAFormer has been evaluated on the Vaihingen, Potsdam, and LoveDA public datasets, as well as the Mapcup dataset. It has demonstrated advanced performance, achieving mIoU scores of 84.5%, 87.3%, 53.5%, and 83.1% on these datasets respectively. Notably, BAFormer-T, the lightweight iteration of the model, surpasses other lightweight models on the Vaihingen dataset with scores of 91.3% F1 and 84.1% mIoU. Cloud-induced atmospheric extinction and occlusion have a major effect on the effectiveness and quality of telescope observations. Real-time cloud cover distribution and long-term statistical data are essential for astronomical siting and telescope operations. At ground-based astronomical telescope sites, cloud cover distribution is currently analyzed using manual observation methods. However, the main disadvantages of manual observation methods are human subjective, heavy workloads and poor real-time performance. Therefore, a real-time automatic cloud images classification method is desperately needed. This paper presents a new cloud identification method, which is named PSO+XGBoost model by combining eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The entire cloud image is divided into 37 sub-regions in order to more precisely identify the distribution of the clouds. 19 features are then extracted, including the sky background, star density, lighting conditions, and subregion grayscale values. The experimental results have shown that the overall classification accuracy of 96.91% and our model is able to outperform several state-of-the-art baseline methods. Our approach achieves high accuracy in comparison with the manual observation methods. Moreover, this method meets telescope real-time scheduling requirements.

Image stitching is a crucial aspect of image processing. However, factors like perspective and environment often lead to irregular shapes in stitched images. Cropping or completion methods typically result in substantial loss of information. This paper proposes a method for rectifying irregularly images into rectangles using deformable meshes and residual networks. The method utilizes a convolutional neural network to quantify rigid structures of images. Choosing the most suitable mesh structure based on the extraction results, offering options such as triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal. Subsequently, the irregularly image, predefined mesh structure, and predicted mesh structure are input into a wide residual neural network for regression. The loss function comprises local and global, aimed at minimizing the loss of image information within the mesh and global target. This method not only significantly reduces information loss during rectification but also adapting to different images with various rigid structures. Validation on the DIR-D dataset shows this method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in image rectification.

Caring for dolphins is a delicate process that requires experienced caretakers to pay close attention to their behavioral characteristics. However, caretakers may sometimes lack experience or not be able to give their full attention, which can lead to misjudgment or oversight. To address these issues, a dolphin behavior analysis system has been designed to assist caretakers in making accurate assessments. The study utilized image preprocessing techniques to reduce sunlight reflection in the pool and enhance the outline of dolphins, making it easier to analyze their movements. The dolphins were divided into 11 keypoints using an open-source tool called DeepLabCut, which helped accurately mark various body parts for skeletal detection. The AquaAI Dolphin Decoder (ADD) was then used to analyze six dolphin behaviors. To improve behavior recognition accuracy, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network was introduced. The ADD and LSTM models were integrated to form the ADD-LSTM system. Several classification models, including unidirectional and bidirectional LSTM, GRU, and SVM, were compared. The results showed that the ADD module combined with a double-layer bidirectional LSTM method achieved high accuracy in dolphin behavior analysis. The accuracy rates for each behavior were over 90%.

Background: The variability of the obtained results of manual tests assessing the angle of strabismus depends on the experience, skills, and training of the examiner. The authors hope that the new measuring device will provide a more sensitive and repeatable method for detecting small strabismus angles compared to the gold standard – PCT. The purpose of this article is to present an innovative strabismus angle demonstration device, called Strabiscan, to present automated measurements of eye deviation, and to compare the obtained results of these measurements to the traditional manual method. Methods: In patients with the manifest strabismic disease (n = 30) and a group of healthy subjects (n = 30), a detailed history was taken and routine ophthalmologic examinations were performed, including best-corrected distance visual acuity, assessment of refractive error using an autorefractometer after cycloplegia, biomicroscopic evaluation of the anterior segment of the eye, and evaluation of the eye fundus by indirect ophthalmoscopy. Subsequently, each patient and healthy subjects were subjected to a prismatic cover-uncover test using a manual method, and then the presence of strabismus was detected and its angle assessed using demonstration Strabiscan device. Results: In the control group, using the Strabiscan demonstration device, small-angle latent strabismus ≤3DP was diagnosed in 83% of patients, and >3DP in 13%. In contrast, using the prismatic cover-uncover test, latent strabismus ≤3DP was diagnosed in only 13% of patients, and latent strabismus with an angle >3DP in 13% of patients. No statistically significant differences were noted in the measurements of strabismus angles made by the different methods. Conclusions: The Strabiscan demonstration device allows quick and accurate assessment of the strabismus angle. Compared to the prismatic cover-uncover test, it has a higher sensitivity for detecting low-angle latent strabismus. Measurements with the Strabiscan do not require the presence of additional co-assistants for the test.

To improve the adaptability of aerial reflective opto-mechanical structures to low-temperature environments, an optimized thermal control design is proposed. Firstly, the relationship be-tween conventional heating methods and axial/radial temperature differences of mirrors with different shapes is analyzed. Based on heat transfer analyses, it is pointed out that optimized thermal control design is necessary to ensure the temperature uniformity of the fused silica mirror and take into account the temperature level when working in low temperature environ-ments. A thermal control scheme based on temperature negative feedback variable power zone heating is proposed for the characteristics of aerial electro-optics systems. Using the thermal control scheme at low temperatures ensures that the average temperature of the mirror fluctu-ates slowly and slightly around 20℃. At the same time, the temperature differences within a mirror and between the primary mirror and the secondary mirror can be controlled within 5℃. Thereby, satisfactory image quality is obtained.

(1) Background: This study aimed to explore how prolonged mask use during the COVID-19 pandemic affected appearance anxiety; (2) Methods: It implemented a quantitative–qualitative mixed-research approach based on a convenience sample of young people in Taiwan; (3) Results: A total of 1,118 participants completed the online questionnaire. A total of 49 participants reached the 55-point threshold of Appearance Anxiety Scale. Higher score of appearance anxiety was correlated to higher state anxiety statistically (r = 0.4, p < 0.001). Ten participants were interviewed and qualitative content analysis revealed 5 main themes and 16 subthemes. Three of the main themes were related to the positive effects of wearing masks for pandemic prevention and reducing appearance anxiety: “Wearing masks indicates compliance with the epidemic prevention requirement,” “Wearing masks functions as protection against lack of confidence in appearance,” and “Wearing masks helps mitigate the fear of being judged by others.” The remaining two “Wearing masks shifts attention from appearance to figure” and “Prolonged mask wearing exacerbates the anxiety about taking it off” were related to the impacts of long-term mask use; (4) Conclusions: results enhance understanding of negative emotional experiences and anxiety related to physical appearance.

In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), generative systems, most notably Midjourney, have tremendous power to generate creative images of buildings and sites of Islamic architectural heritage through text-to-image generation based on the internet. The AI-generated representations have significant potential for architects, specialists, and common users. However, the system has considerable limitations when generating images for some buildings and sites where the representations appear too far from their original represented structures. This research article attempts to answer the question: What are the limitations of using the AI system of Midjourney in producing images similar to the original buildings and sites of the Islamic architectural heritage? The research employs prompt engineering techniques based on historical sources as inputs to examine the accuracy of the output of the AI-generated images of selected examples of structures of the Islamic tradition. It compares the output with the original look by employing direct observation and critical analysis of human intelligence (HI). It categorizes these limitations into four groups: (1) limits of the prompt, (2) limits of fame, (3) limits of regionality and historical styles, and (4) limits of architectural elements and details. It concludes that while Midjourney has great capability to represent high-end AI-generated images inspired by the Islamic tradition, it currently falls short of presenting the actual appearance of some of their original structures.

Artificial intelligence techniques are now widely used in various agricultural applications, including the detection of devastating diseases such as late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and early blight (Alternaria solani) affecting potato (Solanum Tuberorsum L.) crops. In this paper, we present a mobile application for potato crop pest detection based on deep neural networks. The images were taken from the PlantVillage dataset with a batch of 1000 images for each of the three identified classes. An exploratory analysis of the architectures used for early and late blight diagnosis in potatoes was performed, achieving an accuracy of 98.76%, with MobileNetv2. Based on the results obtained, an offline mobile application was implemented, supported on devices with Android 4.1 or later, also featuring an information section on the 27 pests affecting potato crops and a gallery of symptoms. For future work, segmentation techniques will be used to highlight the damaged region in the potato leaf by evaluating its extent and possibly identifying different types of pests affecting the same plant.

A number of accidents at sea are primarily caused by low visibility due to sea fog therefore, it is important to estimate sea fog intensity and visibility in real-time in the ocean environment. However, the existing estimation systems have significant costs so that it is not viable to install them at various locations, such as small vessels, minor ports, and a number of buoys. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm called RDCP (Reduced Dark Channel Prior) which provides the estimation at a low complexity and a low cost. For the estimation, the RDCP algorithm firstly acquires dark channels from an ocean image, then applies an optimized threshold value to the dark channels, and crops out the sky region in the ocean image. For the estimation performance evaluation, 320 raw images captured from cameras at four different ports in South Korea are used rather than artificially composed images. Considering facilities in oceans which are usually operated in the power limited environment, the processing time performance of PDCP are also examined. The experiments demonstrate that the RDCP algorithm provides reliable estimation performance in real-time.

Global Earth Observation (EO) is becoming increasingly important in understanding and addressing critical aspects of life on our planet about environmental issues, natural disasters, sustainable development and others. EO plays a key role in making informed decisions on applying or reforming land use, responding to disasters, shaping climate adaptation policies etc. EO is also becoming a useful tool for helping professionals make the most profitable decisions, e.g., in real estate or the investment sector. Finding similarities in landscapes may provide useful information regarding applying contiguous policies, taking alike decisions or learning from best practices on events and happenings that have already occurred in similar landscapes in the past. However, current applications of similar landscape retrieval are limited by moderate performance and the need for time-consuming and costly annotations. We propose splitting the similar landscape retrieval task into a set of smaller tasks that aim at identifying individual concepts inherent to satellite images. Our approach relies on several models trained with Unsupervised Representation Learning (URL) on Google Earth images to identify these concepts. We show the efficacy of matching individual concepts for tackling the task of retrieving similar landscape(s) to a user-selected satellite image with a proof-of-concept application of the proposed approach on the geographical territory of the Republic of Cyprus. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of breaking up the landscape similarity task into individual concepts closely related to remote sensing instead of trying to capture all concepts and image semantics with a single model like a single RGB semantics model.

Track fasteners play a pivotal role in infrastructure inspection for high-speed rail. Yet, images taken by drones often capture shadows cast by electrical towers flanking the high-speed rail tracks. These shadows can hinder the visibility of the track fasteners, thereby impacting detection efficiency and accuracy considerably. The present paper introduces an end-to-end shadow removal algorithm, rooted in generative adversarial network training. The comprehensive network framework is segmented into three sub-networks: pseudo-mask generation, shadow removal, and result refinement. We have integrated a Fourier convolutional residual module to bolster the feature extraction capability of the generator network. This integration ensures the network retains a global receptive field, even in its more superficial layers. By employing an overall weighted loss function, we enhance the quality of the images produced without shadows. Further, a perceptual loss function has been incorporated to retain the structural information of objects, setting the stage for subsequent defect detection. Our results highlight that Pse-ShadowNet adeptly eradicates fastener shadows while maintaining vital visual features, including object position, structure, texture, edges, and other key visual elements. Consequently, the reconstructed images are detailed and showcase superior image quality.

Deep networks-based hashing has gained significant popularity in recent years, particularly in the field of image retrieval. However, most existing methods only focus on extracting semantic information from the final layer, disregarding valuable structural information that contains important semantic details crucial for effective hash learning. To address this limitation and improve image retrieval accuracy, we propose a novel deep hashing method called Deep Supervised Hashing by Fusing Multiscale Deep Features (DSHFMDF). Our approach involves extracting multiscale features from multiple convolutional layers and fusing them to generate more robust representations for efficient image retrieval. Experimental results on CIFAR10 and NUS-WIDE datasets demonstrate that our method surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art hashing techniques.

Identification of plants is a challenging task which aims to identify the family, genus, and species level according to morphological features. Automated deep learning-based computer vision algorithms are widely used for identifying plants and can help users to narrow down the possibilities. However, numerous morphological similarities between and within species make the classification difficult. In this paper, we tested a custom convolution neural network (CNN) and vision transformer (ViT) based models using the PyTorch framework to classify plants. We used a large dataset of 88K and 16K images for classifying plants at genus and species levels respectively. Our results show that for classifying plants at the genus level, ViT models perform better compared to CNN-based models ResNet50 and ResNet-RS-420, and other state-of-the-art CNN-based models suggested in previous studies on a similar dataset. The ViT model achieved top accuracy of 83.3% for classifying plants at the genus level. ViT models also perform better for classifying plants at the species level compared to CNN-based models ResNet50 and ResNet-RS-420, with a top accuracy of 92.5%. We show that the correct set of augmentation techniques plays an important role in classification success.

This paper presents a novel dynamic camera parameter control method for position and posture estimation of highly miniaturized AR markers (micro AR markers) using a low cost general camera. The proposed method performs iterative calculation of the marker’s position and posture to converge them to specified accuracy with dynamically updating the camera’s zoom, focus and other parameter values based on the detected marker’s depth distances. For a 10 mm square micro AR marker, the proposed system demonstrated recognition accuracy of better than ±1.0% for depth distance and 2.5∘ for posture angle with a maximum recognition range of 1.0 m. In addition, the iterative calculation time was at most 0.7 seconds in an initial detection of the marker. These experimental results suggest that the proposed method and system can be applied to a robotic precise handling of small objects with low cost.

Remote sensing imagery is of great significance for policy decisions, especially for disaster assessment and disaster relief. To ensure the privacy and inviolability of personal buildings, the information containing these buildings must be anonymized during the remote sensing mapping process. Traditional processing methods for these targets in remote sensing mapping are mainly based on manual retrieval and image editing tools, which are inefficient. Deep learning provides a new direction for target hiding. Although the image inpainting method based on deep learning is faster than the manual method, the cost of training calculation is a disadvantage. And the element-wise product operation used in the model increases the risk of vanished or exploded gradients. We propose a Residual Attention Target Hiding (RATH) model for remote sensing target hiding based on deep learning. RATH uses residual attention modules to replace gated convolutions, reducing parameters and mitigating gradient issues. The residual attention module preserves gated convolution performance but provides an adjustable kernel size. RATH retains gated convolutions for dynamic feature selection and balances model depth and width. Furthermore, this paper modifies the contextual attention layer by adjusting the fusion process to enlarge the fusion patch size. Finally, we extend the edge-guided function to preserve the original target information and confound viewers. Ablation studies on an open dataset prove RATH’s efficiency for image inpainting and target hiding. RATH achieves state-of-the-art results with lower complexity. And it has the highest similarity for edge-guided target hiding. RATH enables robust, efficient target hiding for privacy protection in remote sensing imagery while balancing performance and complexity. Experiments show RATH's superiority over existing methods in hiding arbitrary-shaped targets.

As one of the main equipment of coal transportation, the belt conveyor with detection system is an important direction for the development of intelligent mine. The occurrences of non-coal foreign objects making contact with belts are common phenomenon in complex production environments and improper human operations. In order to avoid major safety accidents caused by scratches, deviation and breakage of the belt, a foreign object detection method is proposed for belt conveyor in this work. Firstly, a foreign object image dataset is collected and established, and IAT image enhancement module and attention mechanism of CBAM are proposed to enhance image data sample. Moreover, to predict the angle information of foreign objects with large aspect ratios, a rotating decoupling head is designed, and a MO-YOLOX network structure is constructed. Some experiments are carried out with the belt conveyor in the mine intelligent mining equipment laboratory, and the detections of different foreign objects are analyzed. Experimental results show that the accuracy, recall, and mAP50 of the proposed rotating frame foreign object detection method reaches 93.87%, 93.69%, and 93.72%, and the average inference time of foreign object detection is 25 ms.

Grain yield prediction affects policy making in various aspects such as agricultural production planning, food security assurance, and adjustment of foreign trade. Accurately predicting grain yield is of great significance in ensuring global food security. This paper is based on the MODIS remote sensing image data products from 2010 to 2020, and adds band information such as vegetation index and temperature to form composite remote sensing data as a data set. Aiming at the lack of models for large-scale forecasting and the need for human intervention in traditional models, this paper proposes a grain production estimation model based on deep learning. First, image cropping and yield mapping techniques are used to process the data to generate training samples. Then the channel and spatial attention mechanism (Convolutional Block Attention Module, CBAM) is added for extracting spatial information in different remote sensing bands to improve the efficiency of the model. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks is also added to obtain feature information in the time dimension. Finally, a national-scale grain yield prediction model is constructed. The proposed model was tested on data from 2018 to 2020 showing an average R2 of 0.940 and an average RMSE of 80,020 tons, indicating that it can predict Chinese grain yield better. The model proposed in this paper extracts grain yield information directly from the composite remote sensing data, and solves the problem of small-scale research and imprecise yield prediction in an end-to-end manner.

The corrugated board is a versatile and durable material that is widely used in the packaging industry. Its unique structure provides strength and cushioning, while its recyclability and bio-degradability make it an environmentally friendly option. The strength of corrugated board depends on many factors, including the type of individual papers on flat and corrugated layers, the geometry of the flute, temperature, humidity, etc. This paper presents a new approach to analysis geometric features of corrugated boards based on the images. It allows for precise determination of the geometry of the corrugated layer, as well as the thickness of individual papers in all cardboard layers. The experimental set used in the work and the created software are characterized by high reliability and precision of measurement thanks to the use of an identification procedure based on image analysis and evolutionary algorithms. This allows to quickly find the main geometric characteristics of the corrugated board, which in turn leads to the possibility of performing numerical analyzes taking into account the real model of the corrugated board. Calculations made on a real (correctly mapped geometrically) model allow, for example, a more reliable analysis of the composition of the cardboard, and thus also to obtain greater savings in the optimization process.

It is widely acknowledged that adolescent females are particularly at risk of low body-esteem. Low body-esteem is associated with poor mental health and other negative outcomes. Interventions to help raise body-image could have considerable impact, especially if the intervention is low-cost, easy to implement and scalable. We investigated the efficacy of an intervention where participnants could chose their own clothes to wear during a Physical Education (PE lesson) on changes in body-esteem. We hypothesized that body-esteem would improve with choice. To show that body-esteem is not a transient construct, we tested its stability when assessed in a test-retest design when completed in a classroom setting, hypothesizing body-esteem would be stable. Participants (N =110; Mage =14.9; SDage = 0.68) females completed a 14-item body-esteem scale 4 times; a) wearing school uniform in an assembly, b) during a PE lesson separated by a 2-week gap. The intervention was implemented where students got a choice of PE kit and could wear their own clothes. Findings indicate that body-esteem was stable in the classroom setting where clothes and context were stable, but improved significantly when participants were given a free choice of kit to wear during PE. We argue that this low-cost and scalable intervention represents a useful start point for helping support low body-esteem among a potentially vulnerable population.

Disease control programs need to identify breeding sites of mosquitoes which transmit malaria and other diseases to target interventions and identify environmental risk factors. Increasing availability of very high resolution drone data provides new opportunities to find and characterize these vector breeding sites. Within this study, we identified land cover types associated with malaria vector breeding sites in West Africa. Drone images from two malaria endemic regions in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire were assembled and labeled using open-source tools. We developed and applied a workflow using region of interest-based and deep learning methods to classify these habitat types from very high resolution natural color imagery. Analysis methods achieved a dice coefficient ranging between 0.68 and 0.88 for different vector habitat types; however, this classifier consistently identified the presence of specific habitat types of interest. This establishes a framework for developing deep learning approaches to identify vector breeding sites and highlights the need to evaluate how results will be used by control programs.

This article proposes application of a new mathematical model of spots for solving inverse problems using a learning method, which is similar to using the deep learning. In general, the spots represent vague figures in abstract “information spaces” or crisp figures with lack of in-formation about their shapes and are adequate for representation human mental images and reasoning in Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, crisp figures are regarded as a special and limiting case of spots. A basic mathematical apparatus, basing on L4 numbers, has been developed for the representation and processing of qualitative information of elementary spatial relations between spots. Also, we defined L4 vectors, L4 matrices, and mathematical operations on them. Developed apparatus can be used in AI, in particular, for knowledge representation and for modeling qualitative reasoning and learning. Another application area is the solution of inverse problems by learning. For example, this can be applied to image reconstruction using ultrasound, X-ray, magnetic resonance, or radar scan data. The introduced apparatus was verified by solving problems of reconstruction of images, utilizing only qualitative data of its elementary relations with some scanning figures. This article also demonstrates application of spot-based inverse Radon algorithm for binary image reconstruction.

With the continuous development of urbanization and industrialization in the world, concrete is widely used in various engineering constructions as an engineering material. However, the consequent problem of durability of concrete structures is also becoming increasingly prominent. As an important additional measures, protective coating can effectively improve the durability of concrete performance. Moreover, the uniformity of the concrete surface coating will directly affect its protective effect. Therefore, we propose a nondestructive inspection and evaluation method of coating uniformity based on infrared imaging and cluster analysis for concrete surface coating uniformity detection and evaluation. Based on the obtained infrared images, a series of processing and analysis of the images were carried out using MATLAB software to obtain the characteristics of the infrared images of concrete surface. Finally, by extracting the temperature distribution data of the pixel points on the concrete surface, an evaluation method of concrete surface coating uniformity based on a combination of cluster analysis and hierarchical analysis was established. The evaluation results show that the determination results obtained by this method are consistent with the actual situation. This study has a positive contribution to the testing of concrete surface coating uniformity and its evaluation.

TThe passion of bodybuilding athletes for a symmetric, lean, heavily muscled body leads them to carry out exhausting exercise programs and restrictive eating regimens, sometimes resulting in disordered eating behaviors. This study investigates potential exacerbators on the development of disordered eating in bodybuilding and strength athletes. The study involved 103 Cypriot bodybuilding athletes of both sexes, performing at three levels: professional, recreational and strength athletes. The Eating Attitude Test 26 (EAT-26) and The Three Factor Eating Question-naire (TFEQ-R21) were used to evaluate disordered eating and eating behaviors respectively. The current study was performed under the auspices of the Hellenic Center of Education & Treatment of Eating Disorders (KEADD). The degree of deviation between the perceived ideal body weight and the actual body weight was associated with increased risk of eating disorder. Athletes who desired a lower body weight recorded higher scores on EAT-26 overall, (p=0.001), and the subscales of dieting (p=0.01) and bulimia. (p=0.001). Cognitive restraint and emotional eating scales of TFEQ-R21 were more pronounced in the non-professional athletes. (p=0.01). The emotional eating score was higher in women. There is a need for appropriate sport-specific, gender-specific preventive intervention to deescalate the risk of eating disorder, in both profes-sional and non-professional bodybuilding athletes.

In this study, we aimed to develop a deep learning model for identifying bacterial keratitis (BK) and fungal keratitis (FK) by using slit-lamp images. We retrospectively collected slit-lamp images of patients with culture-proven microbial keratitis between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019, from two medical centers in Taiwan. We constructed a deep learning algorithm, consisting of a segmentation model for cropping cornea images and a classification model that applies convolutional neural networks to differentiate between FK and BK. The model performance was evaluated and presented as the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curves. A gradient-weighted class activation mapping technique was used to plot the heatmap of the model. By using 1330 images from 580 patients, the deep learning algorithm achieved an average diagnostic accuracy of 80.00%. The diagnostic accuracy for BK ranged from 79.59% to 95.91% and that for FK ranged from 26.31% to 63.15%. DenseNet169 showed the best model performance, with an AUC of 0.78 for both BK and FK. The heat maps revealed that the model was able to identify the corneal infiltrations. The model showed better diagnostic accuracy than the previously reported diagnostic performance of both general ophthalmologists and corneal specialists.

The article focuses on derivation of simplified predictive models for identification of overall compressive stiffness and strength of corrugated cardboards. As a representative example an unsymmetrical 5-ply sample (with E and B flute) was used in this study. In order to exclude unreliable displacement measurement in the standard edge crush test, the virtual strain gauges are used. Video extensometry is employed here to collect measurements from the outer surfaces of the sample on both sides. Additional data allows for obtaining real force-displacement curves, which are used in the validation procedure. To emulate the experimental results, beside simple analytical model, also a 3D numerical model fully reflecting the geometry of the corrugated board, based on finite elements method was also built. In both cases a good agreement between the experimental results and the analytical and numerical calculations was observed. This proves that the proposed analytical model can be successfully used to determine the overall stiffness and compressive strength of the corrugated board, provided that the geometry and properties of all the layers of the board are known. The simple model presented in this work enables quick and reliable design and prototyping of new assemblies without the need to manufacture them.

Plant breeding primarily focuses on improving conventional agronomic traits, e.g. yield, quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress; however, genetic improvement methods are being rapidly enhanced through genomics and phenomics. In the Genomics-Phenomics-Agronomics (GPA) paradigm, diverse research approaches have been conducted to bridge any two of these elements, and recently, all of them together. This review first highlights the progress to link i) genomics to agronomics; ii) genomics to phenomics; and iii) phenomics to agronomics. Secondly, the GPA domain is dissected into different layers, each addressing the three elements simultaneously. These dissected layers include genetic dissection through gene mapping using genome-wide association studies and genomic selection using Best Linear Unbiased Prediction, Bayesian approaches, and machine learning. The objective of the review is to help readers to grasp the core developments among the exponentially growing literature in each of these fields. Through this review, the connections among the three elements of the GPA paradigm are coherently integrated toward the prospect of sustainable development of agronomic traits through both genomics and phenomics.

Recent evidence suggests that among behavioral-lifestyle factors, adherence to a healthy dietary pattern such as the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) is linked not only to better psychological health and mental positive status but also to increased subjective well-being (SWB). Nevertheless, this association has been unexplored among individuals with excessive weight. This study explored whether adherence to the MedDiet and the intake of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables (FV) are associated with increased happiness and life satisfaction among Spanish adults with overweight or obesity when weight, body image, and body satisfaction are also considered. A convenience sample of adult individuals with excessive weight completed self-reports on the study variables, and weight and BMI were measured by bioimpedance. No evidence of a relationship with SWB indicators was obtained for MedDiet global indicators, probably due to the low adherence to a healthy diet by these individuals. In contrast, FV intake, as a powerful indicator of healthy eating, was associated with life satisfaction when BMI and body image dimensions were considered, among which body satisfaction also had a key role. Moreover, life satisfaction fully mediated the relationship between FV consumption and happiness. Our findings are expected to make a relevant contribution to knowledge on the positive correlates or protective factors for overall well-being in obesity, including dietary habits and body appreciation. Our results may inform obesity management actions focused on inclusive, positive aesthetic models and promoting a healthy lifestyle for happiness in obesity.

Machine Learning has completely transformed health care system, which transmits medical data through IOT sensors. So it is very important to encrypt them to protect patient data. encrypting medical images from a performance perspective consumes time; hence the use of an auto encoder is essential. An auto encoder is used in this work to compress the image as a vector prior to the encryption process. The digital image passes across description function and a decoder to get back the image in the proposed work; various experiments are carried out on hyper parameters to achieve the highest outcome of the classification. The findings demonstrate that the combination of Mean Square Logarithmic Error as the loss function, ADA grad as an optimizer, two layers for the encoder, and another reverse for the decoder, RELU as the activation function generates the best auto encoder results. The combination of Mean square error (lose function), RMS prop (optimizer), three layers for the encoder and another reverse for the decoder, and RELU (activation function) has the best classification result. All the experiments with different hyper parameter has run almost very close to each other even when changing the number of layers. The running time is between 9 and 16 second for each epoch.

Gwosch et al. (2020) and Balzarotti et al. (2017) purport MINFLUX as the next revolutionary fluorescence microscopy technique claiming a spatial resolution in the range of 1-3 nm in fixed and living cells. Though the claim of molecular resolution is attractive, I am concerned whether true 1 nm resolution has been attained. Here, I compare the performance with other super-resolution methods focussing particularly on spatial resolution claims, atypical image rendering, visualisation enhancement, subjective filtering of localizations, detection vs labelling efficiency and the possible limitations when imaging biological samples containing densely labelled structures. I hope the analysis and evaluation parameters presented here are not only useful for future research directions but also microscope users, developers and core facility managers when deciding on an investment for the next 'state-of-the-art' instrument.

Retinopathy is a human eye disease that causes changes in retinal blood vessels that leads to bleed, leak fluid and vision impairment. Symptoms of retinopathy are blurred vision, changes in color perception, red spots, and eye pain. In this paper, a new methodology based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) is developed and proposed to diagnose and give a decision about the presence of retinopathy. The CNN model is trained by different images of eyes that have retinopathy and those which do not have retinopathy. The performance of the proposed model is compared with the related methods of DREAM, KNN, GD-CNN and SVM. Experimental results show that the proposed CNN performs better.

Single-level Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and multi-level PCA (mPCA) methods are applied here to a set of (2D frontal) facial images from a group of 80 Finnish subjects (34 male; 46 female) with two different facial expressions (smiling and neutral) per subject. Inspection of eigenvalues gives insight into the importance of different factors affecting shapes, including: biological sex, facial expression (neutral versus smiling), and all other variations. Biological sex and facial expression are shown to be reflected in those components at appropriate levels of the mPCA model. Dynamic 3D shape data for all phases of a smile made up a second dataset sampled from 60 adult British subjects (31 male; 29 female). Modes of variation reflected the act of smiling at the correct level of the mPCA model. Seven phases of the dynamic smiles are identified: rest pre-smile, onset 1 (acceleration), onset 2 (deceleration), apex, offset 1 (acceleration), offset 2 (deceleration), and rest post-smile. A clear cycle is observed in standardized scores at an appropriate level for mPCA and in single-level PCA. mPCA can be used to study static shapes and images, as well as dynamic changes in shape. It gave us much insight into the question “what’s in a smile?”

Over the years, artificial intelligence (AI) is spreading its roots in different areas by utilizing the concept of making the computers learn and handle complex tasks that previously require substantial laborious tasks by human beings. With better accuracy and speed, AI is helping lawyers to streamline work processing. New legal AI software tools like Catalyst, Ross intelligence, and Matlab along with natural language processing provide effective quarrel resolution, better legal clearness, and superior admittance to justice and fresh challenges to conventional law firms providing legal services using leveraged cohort correlate model. This paper discusses current applications of legal AI and suggests deep learning and machine learning techniques that can be applied in future to simplify the cumbersome legal tasks.

This paper investigates existing mathematical morphology based techniques applied for performing malaria parasites detection and identification in both Giemsa and Leishman stained blood smears images. Malaria is an epidemic health disease and a rapid, accurate diagnosis is necessary for proper intervention. Generally, pathologists visually examine blood stained slides for malaria diagnosis; this kind of visual inspection is subjective, errorprone and time consuming. In order to cope with such issues, computer-aided methods have been increasingly evolved for abnormal erythrocyte and/or parasites detection, segmentation and semi/fully automated classification. The aim of this paper is to present a review of recent mathematical morphology based methods for malaria parasite detection.

One of the tools for optimal crop production is regular monitoring and assessment of crops. During the growing season of fruit trees, the bloom period has increased photosynthetic rates that correlate with the fruiting process. This paper presents the development of an image processing algorithm to detect peach blossoms on trees. Images of an experimental peach orchard were acquired from the Parma Research and Extension Center of the University of Idaho using an off-the-shelf unmanned aerial system (UAS), equipped with a multispectral camera (Near-infrared, Green, Blue). The orchard has different stone fruit varieties and different plant training system. Individual tree images (high-resolution) and arrays of trees images (low-resolution) were acquired to evaluate the detection capability. The image processing algorithm was based on different vegetation indices. Initial results showed that the image processing algorithm could detect peach blossoms and demonstrate good potential as a monitoring tool for orchard management.

This paper describes a proposed fractional filter-based multi-scale underwater and hazy image enhancement algorithm. The proposed system combines a modified global contrast operator with fractional order-based multi-scale filters used to generate several images, which are fused based on entropy and standard deviation. The multi-scale-global enhancement technique enables fully adaptive and controlled colour correction and contrast enhancement without over exposure of highlights when processing hazy and underwater images. This in addition to illumination/reflectance estimation coupled with global and local contrast enhancement. The proposed algorithm is also compared with the most recent available state-of-the-art multi-scale fusion de-hazing algorithm. Experimental comparisons indicate that the proposed approach yields better edge and contrast enhancement results without halo effect, colour degradation and is faster and more adaptive than all other algorithms from the literature.

This study presents the Bayesian-Optimized Attentive Neural Network (BOANN), a novel approach enhancing image classification performance by integrating Bayesian optimization with channel and spatial attention mechanisms. Traditional image classification struggles with the extensive data in today's big data era. Bayesian optimization has been integrated into neural networks in recent years to enhance model generalization, while channel and spatial attention mechanisms improve feature extraction capabilities. This paper introduces a model combining Bayesian optimization with these attention mechanisms to boost image classification performance. Bayesian optimization optimizes hyperparameter selection, accelerating model convergence and accuracy; the attention mechanisms augment feature extraction. Compared to traditional deep learning models, our model utilizes attention mechanisms for initial feature extraction, followed by a Bayesian-optimized neural network. On the CIFAR-100 dataset, our model outperforms classical models in metrics such as accuracy, loss, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving an accuracy of 77.6%. These technologies have potential for broader application in image classification and other computer vision domains.

Artificial intelligence has garnered significant attention in recent years as a rapidly advancing field of computer technology. With the continual advancement of computer hardware, deep learning has made breakthrough developments within the realm of artificial intelligence. Over the past few years, applying deep learning architecture in medicine and Industrial anomaly inspection has significantly contributed to solving numerous challenges related to efficiency and accuracy. Despite excellent results in radiological, pathological, endoscopic, ultrasonic, and biochemical examinations, this paper utilizes deep learning combined with image processing to identify spinal canal and vertebral foramen dimensions. In existing research, technologies such as corrosion and expansion in magnetic resonance image (MRI) processing have also strengthening the accuracy of results. Indicators such as area and Intersection over Union (IoU)are also provided for assessment. Among them, the mean average precision (mAP), for identifying intervertebral foramen (IVF) and intervertebral disc (IVD) through YOLOv4 is 95.6%. Resnet50 mixing U-Net was employed to identify the spinal canal and intervertebral foramen and achieved IoU scores of 79.11% and 80.89%.

The human eye is a vital source of collecting information worldwide via daily observation. The computer science area recognizes it in research as a human-computer interaction. Human blink is an integral part of this observation as a research topic. Several studies have been conducted on eye blinking and left-right eye movements. Previous studies conducted on the eye blink consider the availability of hardware devices high in the budget, high Precision, and low light expo-sure, unlike our study, which uses low-budget devices as simple as a webcam and more versatile usable techniques, incredibly both dim and high light to name a few. This study offers the observational approach via ResNet101v2, VGG-19, and Convolution Neural Network (CNN) architectures. Outperforming both VGG-19 and CNN in this study, ResNet101v2 achieves an impressive accuracy of 98.2%. In contemporary times, deep learning in AI is taking an advanced form. This study attempts to provide a new insight into the real-world implementation of the eye blink.

Image clustering and classification are fundamental tasks in computer vision, critical for applications overlap image retrieval, object recognition, and image classification. However, the robustness of clustering algorithms against adversarial attacks remains interesting topic. In this paper, we investigate how adversarial attacks on image classification algorithms impact Image Clustering, similarity obtained using the Dot Product, KNN, HNSW algorithms and model Gradient-Weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM). In our work was proposed a targeted study of the impact of adversarial attacks on the clustering ability of ResNet50 under various adversarial scenarios. Was used ResNet50 as the basis for the experiments, a widely used architecture known for its effectiveness in image classification. This network was subjected to various adversarial attacks in order to understand how these perturbations affect its clustering capabilities. By thoroughly examining the resultant clustering outcomes under different attack scenarios, we aim to uncover vulnerabilities and nuances inherent in clustering algorithms and similarity metrics when confronted with adversarial input.

Image restoration plays a vital role in image processing and pattern recognition in producing better recognition accuracy. It was observed that, most of the traditional restoration algorithms were meant for removing a single type of noise and efforts have been made towards the use of partial differential equation model (PDE), to restore different types of images such as super-resolution, bleeding through and deblurring. This research work deployed hybridized shock filter, shock diffusion of higher order PDE to remove degraded images that have been affected by atmospheric turbulence and water smear images. Degraded images of different types were acquired from various sources. The degraded images were subjected to shock filter algorithm, shock diffusion of higher order PDE. The shock filter was combined with PDE, likewise the shock diffusion was also combined with PDE, and the three algorithms were also combined to test the efficiency of the hybridized method on different degraded images. The result was validated using Mean Square Error, Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), Peak-to-Noise-Signal -Ratio (PNSR) and universal quality index (UQI). From the result, it was observed that the combination of many image restoration algorithms does not give better results whereas, the combination of two of the algorithms has really proved effective.

Wagyu beef is gaining worldwide popularity, primarily due to the fineness of its marbling. Cur-rently, the evaluation of this marbling is performed visually by graders. This method has several issues: varying evaluation standards among graders, reduced accuracy due to long working hours and external factors causing fatigue, and fluctuations in grading standards due to the grader's mood at the time. This paper proposes the use of fractal analysis for the grading evaluation of beef marbling to achieve automatic grading without the inconsistencies caused by human factors. In the experiments, cross-sectional images of the parts used for visual judgment were taken, and fractal analysis was performed on these images to evaluate them using fractal dimensions. The results confirmed a correlation between the marbling evaluation and the fractal dimensions, demonstrating that quantitative evaluation can be achieved, moving away from qualitative visual assessments.

In strawberry cultivation, precise disease management is crucial for maximizing yields and reducing unnecessary fungicide use. Traditional methods for measuring Leaf Wetness Duration (LWD), a critical factor in assessing the risk of fungal diseases such as botrytis fruit rot and anthracnose, have been reliant on sensors with known limitations in accuracy and reliability and difficulties with calibrating. To overcome these limitations, this study introduced an innovative algorithm for leaf wetness detection systems employing high-resolution imaging and deep learning technologies, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Implemented at the University of Florida's Plant Science Research and Education Unit (PSREU) in Citra, Florida, USA and expanded to three additional locations across Florida, USA, the system captured and analyzed images of a reference plate to accurately determine the wetness and, consequently, the LWD. The comparison of system outputs with manual observations across diverse environmental conditions demonstrated the enhanced accuracy and reliability of the artificial intelligence-driven approach. By integrating this system into the Strawberry Advisory System (SAS), this study provided an efficient solution to improve disease risk assessment and fungicide application strategies, promising significant economic benefits and sustainability advances in strawberry production.

Lane detection is a foundational technology for autonomous driving systems. It involves identifying the boundaries of lanes on the road and ensuring the vehicle stays within these boundaries. Accurate lane detection is crucial for safety, navigation and traffic management. This paper presents an artificial intelligent based autonomous road lane detection and navigation system for vehicles. The system can detect and analyze road lanes accurately and efficiently in real-time, with frame rates of up to 17 FPS. By utilizing image processing techniques, the system can identify the location and boundaries of road lanes and obstacles on the road and provide accurate and reliable navigation guidance to the driver. The system is integrated with sensors and actuators to provide comprehensive autonomous navigation. The efficiency of the proposed system is demonstrated using accuracy of lane detection on straight and curve lanes covering frames per second and motor of the speed as parameters for assessment. Results show that the proposed system detects lane as entire lane detection, partial lane detection and no detection status on different settings.

With the advancement of technology, signal modulation types are becoming increasingly diverse and complex. The phenomenon of signal time-frequency overlap during transmission poses significant challenges for the classification and recognition of mixed signals, including poor recognition capabilities and low generality. This paper presents a recognition model for fine-grained analysis of mixed signal characteristics, proposing a Geometry Coordinate attention mechanism and introducing a low-rank bilinear pooling module to more effectively extract signal features for classification. The model employs a residual neural network as its backbone architecture and utilizes the Geometry Coordinate attention mechanism for time-frequency weighted analysis based on information geometry theory. This analysis targets multiple-scale features within the architecture, producing time-frequency weighted features of the signal. These weighted features are further analyzed through a low-rank bilinear pooling module, combined with the backbone features, to achieve fine-grained feature fusion. This results in a fused feature vector for mixed signal classification. Experiments were conducted on a simulated dataset comprising 39,600 mixed signal time-frequency plots. The model was benchmarked against a baseline using a residual neural network. The experimental outcomes demonstrated an improvement of 9% in the exact match ratio and 5% in the Hamming score. These results indicate that the proposed model significantly enhances the recognition capability and generalizability of mixed signal classification.

Mapping building roof plane structures is an active research direction in urban-related studies, as understanding roof structure provides essential information for generating highly detailed 3D building models. Traditional deep learning models have been the main focus of most recent research endeavours aiming to extract pixel-based building roof plane areas from remote sensing imagery. However, significant challenges arise, such as delineating complex roof boundaries and invisible boundaries. Additionally, challenges during the post-processing phase, where pix-el-based building roof plane maps are vectorized, often result in polygons with irregular shapes. In order to address this issue, this study explores a state-of-the-art method for planar graph reconstruction applied to building roof plane extraction. We propose a framework for reconstructing regularized building roof plane structures using aerial imagery and cadastral information. Our framework employs a holistic edge classification architecture based on an attention-based neural network to detect corners and edges between them from aerial imagery. Our experiments focused on three distinct study areas characterized by different roof structure topologies: Stadsveld – 't Zwering neighbourhood and Oude Markt area, located in Enschede, The Netherlands, and the Lozenets district in Sofia, Bulgaria. The outcomes of our experiments revealed that a model trained with a combined dataset of two different study areas demonstrated superior performance, capable of delineating edges obscured by shadows or canopy. Our experiment in the Oude Markt area resulted in building roof plane delineation with an F-score value of 0.43 when the model trained on the combined dataset was used. In comparison, the model trained only on the Stadsveld – 't Zwering dataset achieved an F-score value of 0.37, and the model trained only on the Lozenets dataset achieved an F-score value of 0.32. The results from the developed approach are promising and can be used for 3D city modelling in different urban settings.

The studied Khanbogd pluton of peralkaline granite is located in southern Mongolia and occupies an area of ~1000 sq. km. Previously, two ring-shaped bodies were constructed in a flattened shape pluton. However, this shape was not used for the genesis of this pluton. A recent study of Landsat image showed a several elliptical intrusions in two bodies. Chemistry interpretation shows that each intrusion differs in ASI, CIPW norms, 87Sr/86Sri and δ18O isotopes. Elliptical intrusions, uplifted country rocks between them, and roof pendants suggest magma penetration along fractured country rocks. Furthermore, two adjacent intrusive bodies and undeformed host rocks at the front part of the pluton are consistent with underplating magmatic factors during duplex-type thrusting. This magma event is also supported by low of Sr, Ba, Eu and high of Th, U, Pb anomalies and a few amount of garnet crystals in the granites, implying vapor absent melt crystallization associated with underplating. Multiple melt sources, as well as from mantle and recycled sea floor rocks, are identified by ratio of 87Sr /86Sri and δ18O values. The low isotope values, the thrust nature and 295–286 Ma ages of the alkali granites, indicate an underplate magma evidenced during Permian rifting.

Weeds are unwanted and invasive plants that proliferate and compete for resources such as space, water, nutrients, and sunlight, affecting the quality and productivity of the desired crops. Weed detection is crucial for the application of precision agriculture methods and for this purpose machine learning techniques can be used, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNN). This study focuses on the search for CNN architectures and technology used to detect and identify weeds in different crops; 61 articles applying CNN architectures and technology were analyzed in the last five years (2019-2023). The results show the used of different devices to acquire the image for training, such as digital cameras, smartphones, and drone cameras. Additionally, the YOLO family and algorithms are the most widely adopted architectures, followed by VGG, ResNet, Faster R-CNN, AlexNet, and MobileNet, respectively. This study provides an update on CNNs that will serve as a starting point for researchers wishing to implement these weed detection and identification techniques.

Hyperspectral anomaly detection is to recognize anomalies from complex scene in an unsupervised way. Currently, many spectral-spatial detection methods have been proposed with a cascaded manner. However, they often neglect complementary characteristics between spectral and spatial dimensions, which easily leads to yield high false alarm rate. To alleviate this issue, a spectral-spatial information fusion (SSIF) method is designed for hyperspectral anomaly detection. First, an isolation forest is exploited to obtain spectral anomaly map, in which the object-level feature is constructed with entropy rate segmentation algorithm. Then, a local spatial saliency detection scheme is proposed to produce spatial anomaly result. Finally, the spectral and spatial anomaly scores are integrated together followed by a domain transform recursive filtering to generate the final detection result. Experiments on five hyperspectral datasets prove that the proposed SSIF produces superior detection result over other state-of-the-art detection techniques.

Person Re-identification is the task of recognizing comparable subjects across a network of nonoverlapping cameras. This is typically achieved by extracting from the source image a vector of characteristic features of the specific person captured by the camera. Learning a good set of robust, invariant and discriminative features is a complex task, often leveraging contrastive learning. In this article, we explore a different approach, learning the representation of an individual as the conditioning information required to generate images of the specific person starting from random noise. In this way we decouple the identity of the individual from any other information relative to a specific instance (pose, background, etc.), allowing interesting transformations from one identity to another. As generative models, we use the recent diffusion models that have already proven their sensibility to conditioning in many different contexts. The results presented in this article serve as a proof-of-concept. While our current performance on common benchmarks is lower than state-of-the-art techniques, the approach is intriguing and rich of innovative insights, suggesting a wide range of potential improvements along various lines of investigation.

This research addresses the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm newborns, caused by insufficient surfactant synthesis, which can lead to serious complications, including pneumothorax, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary hemorrhage, increasing the risk of a fatal outcome. By analyzing chest radiographs and blood gases, we specifically focus on the significant contributions of these parameters to the diagnosis and analysis of the recovery of patients with RDS. The study involved 32 preterm newborns, and the analysis of gas parameters before and after the administration of surfactants and inhalation corticosteroid therapy revealed statistically significant changes in values of parameters such as FiO2, pH, pCO2, HCO3 and BE (Sig.&lt;0.05), ehile the pO2 parameter showed a potential change (Sig.=0.061). Parallel to this, the research emphasizes the development of a lung segmentation algorithm implemented in the MATLAB programming environment. The key steps of the algorithm include preprocessing, segmentation, and visualization for a more detailed understanding of the recovery dynamics after RDS. These algorithms have achieved promising results, with a global accuracy of 0.93±0.06, precision 0.81±0.16 and an F-score of 0.82±0.14. These results highlight the potential application of algorithms in the analysis and monitoring of recovery in newborns with RDS, also underscoring the need for further development of software solutions in medicine, particularly in neonatology, to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of preterm newborns with respiratory distress syndrome.

Mindful Eating (ME) is an increasingly popular dietary practice that may mediate the sympto-matology of Eating Disorders (EDs). Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a recently proposed eating dis-order characterized by excessive concern for healthy eating and calorie control. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between ME and Psychological Distress (PD) with EDs and ON. In a cross-sectional study involving 407 adults, this research explored the interplay between ME, PD, and EDs, notably ON. Utilizing validated scales for ME (MES-16), EDs (EDE-QS), ON (ORTO-R), and PD, subcategorized in depression, anxiety, and stress (DASS-21), alongside inquiries into Instagram usage, significant correlations emerged. ME demonstrated a robust negative asso-ciation with both EDE-QS (r=-0.501, p<0.001) and ORTO-R (r=-0.519, p<0.001), while EDE-Q and ORTO-R showed significant correlations with depression, anxiety, and stress (p<0.001). Variations in ORTO-R mean scores were notably distinct across different ME categories (p<0.001), emphasizing the relationship between ME and ON. Additionally, participants with extensive daily Instagram use displayed significantly higher ON scores compared to minimal users (p<0.05). These findings sug-gest a negative link between ME with EDs and ON, highlighting ME's potential role in reducing ON tendencies. Furthermore, Instagram use seems associated with PD and elevated ON levels.

Techniques and tools meant to aid fire management activities in the Cerrado, such as accurately determining fuel load and composition spatially and temporally, are pretty scarce. The need to have fuel information for more efficient management in a considerably heterogeneous, biodiverse, and fire-dependent environment makes a constant search for the improvement of the use of remote sensing techniques in determining fuel characteristics. This study presents the following objectives: (1) to assess the use of data from Landsat 8 OLI images to estimate the fine surface fuel load of the Cerrado during the dry season by adjusting multiple linear regression equations; (2) to estimate fuel load through Random Forest and k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithms in comparison with re-gression analyses; and (3) to evaluate the importance of predictor variables from satellite images. Therefore, 64 sampling units were collected, and the pixel values associated with the field plots were extracted in a 3 x 3 pixel window surrounding the reference pixel. For the multiple linear regression analyses, the R² values ranged from 0.63 to 0.78, and the models fitted by the Random Forest al-gorithm ranged from 0.52 to 0.83, while those fitted by k-NN ranged from 0.30 to 0.68. Adopting the Random Forest algorithm resulted in improvements in the statistical metrics of evaluation of the fuel load estimates for Cerrado grassland relative to the multiple linear regression analyses.

This study proposes an image recognition method to assist swine farm managers in collecting health data related to pig feeding and excretion. Analyzing the correlation between sow health data and indoor air quality in the pigsties revealed significant influences of air quality indicators on sow health. Increased levels of TVOC, CO2, and temperature were found to negatively affect feeding health, while increased temperature, humidity, and PM10 were found to negatively impact excretion health. These findings provide a basis for evaluating variables when constructing future sow disease prediction models. Analyzing the correlation between pig health status and air quality can help swine farm managers improve sow production environments, reduce disease risks, enhance production efficiency, and provide valuable insights for future research on disease prediction models.

Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow, a spongy tissue that secretes into the bones and serves as the site for the production of blood cells. One of the most prevalent kinds of leukemia in adults is acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Leukemia has non-specific signs and symptoms that are also similar to those of other interpersonal illnesses. The only way to accurately diagnose leukemia is by manually examining a stained blood smear or bone marrow aspirate under the microscope. However, this approach takes more time and is less precise. This paper describes a method for the automatic recognition and classification of AML in blood smears. Classification techniques include decision trees, logistic regression, support vector machines, and naive bayes.

Loess is a special soil with high water sensitivity, which covers a large area in northwest China. Cracks are prone to generate in loess under the arid and semi-arid climate, which will provide the preferential channel for water and reduce the mechanical properties of soils. It is of great significance to understand the evolution characteristics and mechanisms of the cracks in loess areas. At present, the researches on cracks in soils are mainly concentrated in the characteristics of different cracking patterns. However, the spacing cracks are mostly discussed in materials like rock and concrete, rather than soils. The cracking characteristics and mechanisms of spacing cracks in loess is still inadequate. In this research, the drying tests of loess are carried out with different sizes of specimens. The parameters of spacing cracks and local strain distributions of the loess samples are obtained via PCAS and DIC methods during desiccation, respectively. The cracking modes, space cracking laws like insertion and saturation of spacing cracks are revealed. Finally, the size effect on the characteristics of spacing cracks is verified with a discrete element software MatDEM.
