We investigated whether cigarette smoking and dietary acid load (DAL) are associated with the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in middle-aged healthy Korean men. Healthy men without diagnosed chronic disease (40-64 yrs) from the KNHANES-VI (2013–2015) included in the analysis (n=774) were subdivided by smoking status and DAL levels as estimated by the net endogenous acid production (NEAP) quartile. Current smokers tended to have a higher risk of COPD than non-smokers before and after the adjustment. When divided by the DAL quartile, the Q4 tended to have a higher risk of COPD than the Q1. Additionally, current smokers with lower (Q2), modest (Q3), and highest NEAP scores (Q4) showed more than 4-fold higher risks of COPD than the non-smokers with the lowest NEAP scores (Q1). Ex–smokers with higher NEAP scores (Q3 and Q4) showed more than 4-fold higher risks of COPD than the Q1. Interestingly, the risk of COPD was also more than 6-fold higher in non-smokers with the highest NEAP scores compared to the Q1. NEAP scores and smoking status synergistically increased the risk of COPD in middle-aged healthy Korean men. It suggests that DAL levels are an important factor for the prevention and management of COPD.

The seasonal variation in fatty acids and minerals concentrations was investigated through the analysis of Pecorino Romano cheese samples collected in January, April, and June. A fraction of samples contained missing values in their fatty acid profile. Probabilistic Principal component analysis coupled with Linear Discriminant Analysis was employed to classify cheese samples on a production season basis while accounting for missing data and quantifying the missing Fatty acids concentration for the sample in which they were absent. The levels of rumenic acid, vac-cenic acid and omega-3 compounds were positively correlated with the spring season, while the length of the saturated fatty acids increased throughout the production seasons. Concerning the classification performances, the optimal number of principal components (i.e., 5) achieved an ac-curacy in cross-validation equal to 98 %. Then, when the model was tasked to impute the lacking Fatty acid concentration values, the optimal number of principal components resulted in an R2 value in cross-validation of 99.53%

Cosmetics have various characters, but there have been no studies which classified the properties of cosmetics based on their effects on skin-domesticated bacteria. In this study, we established an anaerobic culture and short-chain fatty acid measurement system using Staphylococcus epidermidis, a representative bacterium of indigenous skin bacteria. Furthermore, this system was used to extract and classify the characteristics of 9 cosmetics. Cosmetics containing ferments of rice and soy were clustered in the vicinity, although one cosmetic containing soy ferment was clustered distant from other similar cosmetics. Cosmetics from South Asia and those containing natural plant extracts were clustered in the vicinity. These results show that this method can be utilized as a cosmetics pattern map, and will provide a method to prevent growth of opportunistic bacteria.

The leaves of Ligustrum robustum have been applied as Ku-Ding-Cha, a functional tea to clear heat and remove toxins; and served as a folk medicine to deal with diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters, which were isolated from the leaves of L. robustum, might be a new resource to prevent diabetes and its complications because of their strong -glucosidase and fatty acid synthase (FAS) inhibitory activities and antioxidant effect. However, the quantitative analytical method for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in the leaves of L. robustum hasn’t been reported so far. In addition, it was difficult and troublesome to analyze no less than 34 trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters by usual HPLC. Therefore, a new HPLC-UV method using hydrolyzation with sodium hydroxide for quantitation of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in the leaves of L. robustum was developed in the present study. The optimal hydrolyzation conditions were as follows: 1 mL sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (1 M) was added into 1 mL the extract of L. robustum and incubated at 80 °C for 2 h , and then 1 mL hydrochloride (1 M) solution was added. HPLC analysis was performed in reverse phase mode using a C-18 column, eluting with methanol-0.1% acetic acid aqueous solution (40:60, v/v) in isocratic mode at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, and detecting at 310 nm. The analytical method was simple and rapid, which simplified greatly the analytical process. The method was validated in terms of linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy. High linearity was demonstrated with correlation coefficient of 1.000 for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid. The LOD and LOQ values were 1.55 and 4.69 μg/mL, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of intra-day and inter-day variabilities for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid were less than 2%. The percentage recovery of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid was 101.2% ± 0.8%. Finally, the proposed method was applied successfully to the determination and comparison of the contents of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in various extracts of the leaves of L. robustum. The 60%-70% ethanol extracts of L. robustum showed the highest contents of free trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid (3.96-3.99 mg/g), and the 50%-80% ethanol extracts of L. robustum displayed the highest contents of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters (202.6-210.6 mg/g). The method can be applied also to the quality control of the products of L. robustum.

High purity TiO2 and CuO powders were synthesized by the Pechini method, an inexpensive and easy-to-implement procedure to synthetize metal oxides. The variables of synthesis were the ethylene glycol:citric acid molar ratio and the pH. High reproducibility of the anatase and tenorite phase was obtained for all synthesis routes. The degree of purity of the powders was confirmed by XRD, FTIR, UV-vis absorption and XPS spectra. SEM and TEM images revealed the powders are composed by micrometer grains that can have a spherical shape (only in the TiO2) or formed by a non-compacted nanocrystalline conglomerate. FTIR spectra only vibrational modes associated to the TiO2 or CuO with a nanoparticle behavior. UV-vis absorption spectra revealed the values of maximum absorbance percentage of both systems are reached in the ultraviolet region, with percentages above 83 % throughout the entire visible light spectrum for the CuO system, a relevant result for solar cell applications. Finally, XPS experiments allow the observation of the valence bands and the calculation of the energy bands of all oxides.

The rise in prevalence of obesity in women of reproductive age in both developed and developing countries might propagate intergenerational cycles of detrimental effects on metabolic health, contributing to substantial economic burden on society. Placental lipid metabolism might be disrupted by maternal obesity, which possibly affects the life-long health of the offspring. Here, we investigated placental lipid metabolism and handling from women with pre-gestational obesity as a sole pregnancy complication and compared to placental responses of lean women. Open profile and targeted lipidomics were used to assess placental lipids and oxidized products of docosahexahenoic acid (DHA), neuroprostanes, and arachidonic acid (AA), isoprostanes. Placental fatty acid transporters FABP1, FABP3 and endothelial lipase protein were measured. Despite no signs of overall alterations in lipid content, increased contents of DHA, AA, DHA-derived neuroprostanes and AA-derived isoprostanes and decreased content of FABP1 protein were found in placentas from obese women. Multivariate analyses suggested that these oxidised fatty acids are associated with maternal and placental inflammation and also with birth weight. These results might shed light on the molecular mechanisms associated with altered fatty acid metabolism and lipid handling in maternal pre-gestational obesity, placing these oxidized fatty acids as novel mediators of placental function.

Red mud is a hazardous waste of alumina industry that contains high amounts of iron, aluminum, titanium and REEs. One of the promising methods for the extraction of iron from red mud is car-bothermic reduction with the addition of sodium salts. This research focuses on the process of hy-drochloric high-pressure acid leaching using 10–20% HCl of two samples of non-magnetic tailings obtained by 60-minute carbothermic roasting of red mud at 1300 °C and the mixture of 84.6 wt. % of red mud and 15.4 wt. % Na2SO4 at 1150 °C, respectively, with subsequent magnetic separation of metallic iron. An influence of temperature, leaching duration, solid-to-liquid-ratio and acid con-centration on dissolution behavior of Al, Ti, Mg, Ca, Si, Fe, Na, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sc, Zr were studied. Based on the investigation of the obtained residues, mechanism of passing of valuable elements into the solution was proposed. It has shown that 90% Al, 91% Sc and above 80% of other REEs can be dissolved under optimal conditions; Ti can be extracted into the solution or the residue depending on the leaching temperature and acid concentration. Based on the research results, novel flowsheets for red mud treatment were developed.

Lambertianic acid (LA) is a biologically active compound from the leaves of Pinus koraiensis. In the present study, apoptotic mechanisms of LA plus TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) were elucidated in non-small cell lung cancer cells (NSCLCs). Cytotoxicity assay, flow cytometry, immunoprecipitation and Western blotting were performed. Here, combined treatment of LA and TRAIL increased cytotoxicity, sub-G1 population and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and caspase3/8/9 in A549 and H1299 cells compared to LA or TRAIL alone. Furthermore, combined treatment of LA and TRAIL significantly decreased anti-apoptotic proteins such as B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Fas-like inhibitor protein (FLIP) and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) and enhanced the activation of pro-apoptotic proteins Bid compared to LA or TRAIL alone. In addition, combined treatment of LA and TRAIL upregulated the expression of Death receptor 4 (DR4) and downregulated phosphorylation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (p-NF-B), inhibitory protein of kB family (p-IB) and FLIP in A549 and H1299 cells along with disrupted binding of XIAP with caspase3 or NF-B. Overall, these findings suggest that lambertianic acid enhances TRAIL-induced apoptosis via inhibition of XIAP/NF-B in TRAIL resistant NSCLCs.

The historical and cultural use of food as a remedy for diseases is evident in societies, such as using Hibiscus sabdariffa to address conditions like hypertension and high blood glucose. The natural biocompounds in this plant, including Delphinidin-3-Sambubioside (DS3), Quercetin (QRC), and Hibiscus Acid (HA), have been linked to various health benefits. Despite individual attention, molecular targets for these compounds remain unclear. In this study, in-silico analysis employed bioinformatic tools; including Swiss Target Prediction, ShinnyGo 0.77, KEGG, and Stringdb, to identify molecular targets, pathways, and hub genes. A PubMed literature search complemented the results. DS3 demonstrated potential modifications in genes related to nitrogen and glucose metabolism, inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation, particularly affecting the PI3K-AKT pathway. QRC displayed interconnected targets across multiple pathways, with overlap with DS3 and a focus on cancer-related pathways. HA showed distinct targets, particularly associated with nervous system-related pathways. These findings highlight the need for targeted research on the molecular effects of DS3, QRC, and HA, providing valuable insights into potential therapeutic pathways.

Mechanical robustness and high energy efficiency of composite materials are immensely important in modern stretchable, self-powered electronic devices. However, the availability of these materials and their toxicities are challenging factors. This paper presents the mechanical and energy-harvesting performances of low-cost natural rubber composites made of stearic acid-modified diatomaceous earth (mDE) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The obtained mechanical properties were significantly better than those of unfilled rubber. Compared to pristine diatomaceous earth, mDE has higher reinforcing efficiencies in terms of mechanical properties because of the effective chemical surface modification by stearic acid and enhanced filler-rubber interactions. The addition of a small amount of CNT as a component in the hybrid filler systems not only improves the mechanical properties but also improves the electrical properties of the rubber composites and has electromechanical sensitivity. For example, the fracture toughness of unfilled rubber (9.74 MJ/m3) can be enhanced by approximately 484% in a composite (56.86 MJ/m3) with 40 phr (per hundred grams of rubber) hybrid filler, whereas the composite showed electrical conductivity. At a similar mechanical load, the energy-harvesting efficiency of the composite containing 57 phr mDE and 3 phr CNT hybrid filler was nearly double that of the only 3 phr CNT-containing composite. The higher energy-harvesting efficiency of the mDE-filled conductive composites may be due to their increased dielectric behaviour. Because of their bio-based materials, rubber composites made by mDE can be considered eco-friendly composites for mechanical and energy harvesting applications and suitable electronic health monitoring devices.

Optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) is a beautiful analytical technique for the study of chiral molecules and polymers. In this study, ORD was applied successfully to follow the degree of polycondensation of l-(+)-lactic acid toward the formation of poly(lactic acid) oligomers (PLAO) and high molecular weight poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) in a simple esterification reaction equipment. PLLA is a biodegradable polymer obtainable from renewable raw materials. The racemization of the intrinsically isotactic PLLA through thermal treatment can be easily followed through the use of ORD spectroscopy. Organic or molecular electronics is a hot topic dealing with the combination of π-conjugated organic compounds and polymers with specific properties (e.g. chirality) which can be exploited to construct optoelectronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photovoltaic (OPV) high efficiency cells, switchable chirality devices, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and so on. ORD spectroscopy was applied to study either the gigantic optical rotation of PLLA films as well as to detect successfully the excitonic coupling occurring in thin solid PLLA green film loaded with a combination of two dyes: SY96 (a pyrazolone dye) and PB16 (the metal-free phthalocyanine pigment). The latter compound PLLA loaded with SY96 and PB16 shows a really gigantic optical activity in addition to typical ORD signal due to exciton coupling and may be considered as a simple and easily accessible model composite of a chiral polymer matrix combined with π-conjugated dyes for molecular electronics studies.

This study was conducted to determine the dynamic effects of dietary crude protein (CP) intake on nitrogen (N) balance, ileal amino acid digestibility, and gene expression levels of digestive enzymes at three stages in pigs. In Experiment 1, 18 growing pigs (average body weight (BW) = 9.5 kg) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments (n = 6/treatment group), including normal (20% CP), low (17% CP), and very low (14% CP) protein intake. In Experiment 2, 18 growing pigs (average BW = 30 kg) were allotted randomly to one of three treatments (n = 6/treatment group), including normal (18% CP), low (15% CP), and very low (12% CP) protein intake. In Experiment 3, 18 growing pigs (average BW = 45 kg) were assigned randomly to one of three treatments (n = 6/treatment group), including normal (16% CP), low (13% CP), and very low (10% CP) protein intake. Growing pigs fed the 14% CP and 17% CP diets had lower final BW (P < 0.05) and average daily gain (ADG) (P < 0.05) compared to pigs fed the 20% CP diet. Reducing the dietary CP level from 20 to 14% decreased urinary N excretion by 52.8% (P < 0.001) in Experiment 1. Reducing the dietary CP level from 18 to 12% decreased urinary N excretion by 55.3% (P < 0.001) and reduced fecal N excretion by 34% (P < 0.05) in Experiment 2. Reducing the dietary CP level from 16 to 10% decreased urinary N excretion by 56.4% (P < 0.001) and fecal N excretion by 47.1% (P < 0.001) in Experiment 3. Pigs fed the very low (14%, 12%, and 10% CP) diets showed higher digestibility for CP (P < 0.05), His (P < 0.05), Ile (P < 0.05), Phe (P < 0.05), Thr (P < 0.05), Trp (P < 0.05), Glu (P < 0.05), and Ser (P < 0.05) compared to pigs fed the normal (20%, 18%, and 16% CP) diets among the three experiments. Pigs fed the very low (14%, 12%, and 10% CP) diets showed higher mRNA levels for chymotrypsin C (P < 0.01 in Experiment 1 and 2; P < 0.05 in Experiment 3) compared to pigs fed the normal (20%, 18%, and 16% CP) diets among the three experiments. These results indicated that a reduction in dietary CP by 6% limited the growth performance of growing pigs, and a reduction of dietary CP by 3% supplemented with essential amino acids could reduce the excretion of N into the environment without affecting weight gain.

Presence and identity of secondary metabolites are two of the main components of lichen taxonomy. Aromatic compounds formed via the acetyl-polymalonate pathway are the most studied lichen substances. In addition, compounds derived from the mevalonic acid pathway (e.g., terpenes and steroids) are sometimes detected in the medulla. However, their identity and value as diagnostic characters in the genus Usnea are yet poorly understood despite the fact that they were mentioned in several taxonomical papers. We conclude that i) aside from the previously recognized polyphenolic compounds, carbohydrates and steroids are also detected in the medulla of some Usnea species; ii) the use of sulfuric anisaldehyde reagent greatly improves the detection of terpenes, carbohydrates and steroids compared with the sulfuric acid reagent routinely used in thin layer chromatography; iii) among carbohydrates, we detected arabitol and sucrose in the medulla; iv) steroids and terpenes remain unidentified and deserve further investigations.

Ginkgolic acids (GA) have been reported to exhibit anticancer properties, however, the mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the mechanisms of GA C13:0 that was isolated from Ginkgo biloba exocarp (GBE) for anti-proliferation, pro-apoptosis and anti-migration effects in human MCF-7 and mouse 4T-1 breast cancer cells. The cytotoxic effect, apoptosis induction and migration inhibition were measured using MTT, TUNEL and Wound healing assays. The expression of mRNA and protein were determined using qPCR and Western blot. Our results showed that no cytotoxicity was found at concentrations of C13:0 below 100µM. The effects of GA C13:0 was further demonstrated by up-regulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 apoptosis pathway and the expression of Apaf-1 protein in the mitochondria. In addition, GA C13:0 also suppressed cell migration and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) with the increase of E-cadherin expression accompanied by the decrease of Snail, MMP-2, MMP-9 and Vimentin expression. Moreover, GA C13:0 induced cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1B1 expression in aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway. Notably, the up-regulation of CYP1B1 also might play a pivotal regulatory role in mitochondrial and EMT pathways in MCF-7 and 4T-1 cells. Our results may have implications for the development of anticancer agents containing GA as functional additives.

Background: On 1 January 2024, the Noto Peninsula was struck by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake. In the previous article, The food provided in the evacuee shelters proved insufficient in energy and protein for the older adults, 65% of whom visited our emergency clinic. Methods: (1) analyze the amino acid and fatty acid composition of 11 evacuation meals using the "Duplicated Combination" Model, (2) assess the adequacy of the amino acid and fatty acid composition, the digestible essential amino acid score (DIAAS) was calculated and analyzed in relation to the half-life determined by the N-terminal amino acid of the proteins.. Linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) levels were compared with EFSA recommendations, (3) The national survey of emergency food stocks in hospitals and social care institutions conducted in Jan, 2024 was analyzed. Results: (1) DIAAS was less than 1.00 for all 11 foods provided and was considered inadequate, (2) the half-life of the protein, whose N-terminal valine has a half-life of 100 hours, must be considered a possible deficiency when living in a shelter for more than a week, (3) LA and ALA levels were less than 40% of EFSA recommended, (4) the nationwide survey found that 80% of people have a 3-day supply and are likely to be energy and protein deficient. Conclusion: Analysis of foods in evacuation shelters after the Noto Peninsula earthquake revealed that the quality of amino acids and fatty acids seem inadequate according to DIAAS and EFSA recommendations. The “Duplicated Combination” Model might be useful to investigate the quality of foods in the shelters.

The vast quantities of bauxite residue generated globally necessitate environmentally responsible disposal strategies. This study investigated the long-term (5-year) behavior of modified bauxite residue (MBR) with an initial pH of 8.5, using lysimeters to test various configurations: raw MBR, sand/soil capping, revegetation, and used MBR (UMBR) previously applied for acid mine drainage remediation. Throughout the 5-year experiment and across all configurations, the pH of the leachates stabilized between 7 and 8 and their salinity decreased. Their low sodium absorption ratio (SAR) indicated minimal material clogging risk and suitability for salt-tolerant plant growth. Emission of potentially toxic elements (except V) decreased rapidly after the first year to low levels. Leachate concentrations consistently remained below LD50 for Hyelella Azteca, at least an order of magnitude lower by the experiment's end (except for first-year Cr). Sand capping performed poorly, while revegetation and soil capping slightly increased emissions, though these were negligible given the low final emission levels. Revegetated MBR shows promise as a suitable and sustainable solution for managing bauxite residues, provided the pH is maintained above 6.5. This study highlights the importance of long-term assessments and appropriate management strategies for bauxite residue disposal.

In the previous work, the pure fatigue behavior of AM60 magnesium alloy (PF-AM60) was compared with the corrosion fatigue behavior of these specimens (CF-AM60). In this research, in continuation of the previous job, the pure fatigue behaviors of AM60 with polylactic acid (PLA) coating (PF-AM60-PLA) and also, corrosion fatigue behaviors of magnesium alloy with PLA coating (CF-AM60-PLA) were evaluated. Polymer coating was made by fused deposition modeling (FDM) with a 3D printer and attached to standard fatigue test specimens with a glue. Then, they were immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 27 days. In the end, a high-cycle bending fatigue test was performed on samples. The fracture surface of the samples was also observed using the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Due to corrosion, the weight of the specimens redcued by an average of 35%. The corrosion rate decreased in the first 7 days and then increased. PF samples with coating had an average of 49% increase in fatigue lifetime. Regarding the CF samples, despite the use of a 10 times stronger solution, the fatigue lifetime of these samples decreased by only 35%. FESEM results also showed cleavage plates and striations. In addition, the separation of the glue from the coating and Mg was observed. Corrosion products including microcracks and holes were seen on the fracture surface of CF specimens, which caused stress concentration and crack growth. Holes caused by the release of gases were also observed in polymer coatings.

Oral and parenteral delivery of first-line anticonvulsant Valproic cid (VA) are associated with serious adverse effects, high hepatic metabolism, high clearance, and low bioavailability in brain. GastroPlus program was used to predict in vivo performance of immediate (IR) and sustained release (SR) products in human. HSPiP software predicted excipients with maximum possible miscibility of the drug. Based on GastroPlus and HSPiP program, various excipients were screened for experimental solubility study and prepared cationic nanoemulsions and respective gels for nasal to brain delivery. These were characterised for size, size distribution, polydispersity index, zeta potential, morphology, pH, % transmittance, drug content, and viscosity. In vitro drug release, ex vivo permeation profile (goat nasal mucosa), and penetration studies were conducted. Result showed that in-vivo oral drug dissolution and absorption were predicted as 98.6 mg and 18.8 mg, respectively from both tablets (IR and SR) at 8 h using GastroPlus. The drug access to the portal vein was relatively predicted high in IR (115 mg) as compared to SR (82.6 mg). Plasma drug concentration-time profile predicted was in good agreement with published reports. The program predicted duodenum and jejunum as the prime site of drug absorption and no effect of nanonization on Tmax for sustained release formulation. Hansen parameters suggested suitable selection of excipients. The program recommended for nasal to brain delivery of the drug using cationic mucoadhesive product. The optimized stable CVE6 was associated with optimal size (113 nm), low PDI (0.26), high zeta potential (+34.7 mV), high transmittance (97.8%), and high strength (0.7 %w/w). In vitro release and ex vivo permeation of CVE6 were found to be substantially high as compared to anionic AVE6 and respective gels. Penetration study executed high fluorescence intensity with CVE6 and CVE6-gel as compared to suspension and ANE6 which may be attributed to electrostatic interaction between mucosal membrane and nanoglobules. Thus, cationic nanoemulsion and respective mucoadhesive gel are promising strategy for delivery of VA to brain through intransal administration for the treatment of seizure and convulsion.

Sulphuric acid is a widely used raw material in the chemical industry. Its corrosive effect on materials varies considerably, depending on impurities, temperature and water content. Accordingly, good corrosion resistance under all conditions is very difficult to achieve. This is especially an issue for micro process apparatus with very thin walls. Furthermore, such devices are often joint by diffusion bonding what may alter materials properties due to high temperatures and long dwell times. In fact, for each new material, the diffusion bonding parameters must be optimized and the impact on mechanical as well as corrosion properties must be investigated. In this paper, two high molybdenum alloys, namely Hastelloy B3 and BC-1, were evaluated. Diffusion bonding tests were performed using ten layers of sheet material in between round stock. Corrosion tests were performed in 70 % sulphuric acid at 100°C for 1000 h. Tensile tests on both alloys were carried out for different material conditions, to determine the change in mechanical strength and elongation at fracture values. In general, independent of the condition of the materials, the fracture behavior of both alloys was found to be ductile and the specimens show the typical dimple structure, in the case of diffusion bonded samples, interrupted by weak spots or rather non-bonded areas. These areas are obviously causing the onset of material failure and thus, a degradation of mechanical properties. Tensile samples, that were aged in 70% sulphuric acid at 100°C for 1000 hours showed local corrosion attacks at the grain boundaries at the circumferential surfaces and especially at the joining planes – for Hastelloy B3 much more pronounced than for Hastelloy BC-1. Accordingly, a further decrease of both, the stress- and elongation at fracture values is observed. However, the typical material parameters like 0.2 % yield strength used for dimensioning components are found to be sufficient high, even when operating the materials under such harsh conditions. When concluding the results, at least Hastelloy BC-1 reveals both sufficient good mechanical properties and an excellent corrosion resistance, regardless of the heat treatment, and could be considered for manufacturing micro-process engineering apparatuses operated in a sulphuric acid environment. This is a significant advance compared to the results obtained within a AiF project, previously carried out on four different materials to investigate the corrosion resistance in sulphuric acid.

Nanoparticles of graphene and carbon nanotubes are attractive materials for improvement of mechanical and barrier properties and functionality of biodegradable polymers for food packaging applications. However, the increase of the manufacture and consumption increases the probability of exposure of human and environment to such nanomaterials, this rising questions about the risks of nanomaterials since they can be toxic. For a risk assessment, it is crucial to know whether airborne nanoparticles of graphene and carbon nanotubes can be released from nanocomposites into the environment at their end-life, or they remain embedded in the matrix. In this work the release of graphene and carbon nanotubes from the poly(lactic) acid nanocomposite films were studied for the scenarios of: (i) biodegradation of matrix polymer at the disposal of wastes; and (ii) combustion and fire of nanocomposite wastes. Thermogravimetric analysis in air atmosphere, TEM, AFM and SEM were used to verify the release of nanoparticles from nanocomposite films. The three factors model was applied for the quantitative and qualitative risk assessment to the release of graphene and carbon nanotubes from nanocomposite wastes for these scenarios. Safety concern is discussed in respect to the existing regulations for nanowastes stream.

Background & Aims: This RCT aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of MF4637, a medical food comprising highly concentrated, highly purified, long chain (LC) omega-3 fatty acids, (460 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 380 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) in correcting the omega-3 fatty acid nutritional deficiency present in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The potential for MF4637 to reduce liver fat was evaluated in a subset of patients. Methods: 176 subjects with NAFLD were randomised to receive 3 g/d of LC-omega-3 fatty acids (n=87) or placebo (olive oil; n=89) for 24 weeks, in addition to following standard-of-care dietary guidelines for these patients. Thus, interventions were given on top of the dietary advice. The omega-3 index, omega-6:omega-3 fatty acid ratio (primary outcome) and quantitative measurements of red blood cell (RBC) EPA and DHA (secondary outcome) were determined at baseline and study completion. Magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) assessment of change in liver fat fraction was conducted in a subset of patients. Results: Of the 176 randomised subjects, 167 were analysed for the primary and secondary outcomes (n=81 in the MF4637 group; n=86 in the placebo group). Supplementation with MF4637 for 24 weeks significantly increased the omega-3 index and absolute values of RBC EPA and DHA, and decreased the omega-6:omega-3 fatty acid ratio in NAFLD patients compared to placebo (p<0.0001). There was a statistically significant reduction in liver fat content within both groups with no difference between them. An inverse relationship between change in absolute RBC EPA+DHA and change in liver fat, AST and ALT levels was seen suggesting that a greater increase in omega-3 content was associated with a reduction for both liver fat content and improvement in liver enzyme levels. Additionally, a significant liver fat-lowering effect of MF4637 compared to placebo was demonstrated in a subset of patients with baseline fatty liver index (FLI) score ≥ 40. There were no serious adverse events related to study interventions. Conclusions: The study results demonstrate that the medical food MF4637, was able to correct the nutritional deficiency of omega-3 in NAFLD patients above and beyond that obtained with nutritional counselling. This demonstrates that MF4637 is beneficial in raising the low omega-3 index observed in these patients. A reduction in hepatic steatosis was demonstrated with both intervention groups although no distinction between groups was seen. Further analyses demonstrate the potential to identify omega-3 sensitive patients using an easily available clinical tool for steatosis prediction.

Recently, we published that the monoclonal antibody (D12 mAb) recognizes gp63 of L. mexicana, it is responsible for COX activity. This D12 mAb exhibited cross-reactivity with Trypanosoma cruzi, Entamoeba histolytica, Acanthamoeba castellanii, and Naegleria fowleri. COX activity assays performed in these parasites suggested the potential presence of such enzymatic activity. In our investigation, we confirmed that wild-type recombinant gp63 exhibits COX-like activity, in contrast to a mutated recombinant gp63 variant. Consequently, our objective was to identify sequences orthologous to gp63 and subsequently analyze the binding of arachidonic acid (AA) to the putative active sites of these proteins. Given the absence of a crystallized structure for this protein in the Protein Data Bank (PDB), it was imperative to first obtain a three-dimensional structure by homology modeling, using leishmanolysin (PDB ID: LML1) as a template in the Swiss model. Database. The results obtained through molecular docking simulations revealed the primary interactions of AA close to the Zinc atom present in the catalytic site of gp63-like molecules of several parasites, predominantly mediated by hydrogen bonds with HIS264, HIS268 and HIS334. Furthermore, COX activity was evaluated in commensal species such as E. dispar and during the encystment process of E. invadens.

A testable hypothesis with quantitative predictions is put forward, proposing that strong acids produced on land at a rate correlated with global population are an increas-ing cause of increasing atmospheric CO2 pressure (pCO2). This hypothesis widens the imbalance assumed between the global uptake of CO2 by photosynthesis and emissions of CO2 from all sources, including the combustion of fossil fuels, causing greater atmos-pheric pCO2. Our modelling tests for reactions of dissolved inorganic carbon show that increasing atmospheric CO2 is caused thermodynamically by falling land surface pH values, but only with bicarbonate present. Strong acids generated by oxygen from re-duced inorganic compounds of nitrogen and sulphur emit CO2 almost stoichiometrically from dissolved bicarbonate in the pH range of most global soils, between 6 to above 8. We show that each decrease of aqueous pH value of 0.01 units from acidification of sur-face water near pH 8 potentially increases the pCO2 in the atmosphere by about 7 ppmv. The surface pH value of the ocean near 8.10 in 2000 has been shown to decrease at this rate, a result of equilibrating with the rising atmospheric pCO2. Therefore, our qualita-tive estimates of increasing atmospheric CO2 driven by irreversible acidification on land are critical and need broad scale validation. Unfortunately, these acidifying processes on land from excessive nitrogen fertiliser, export of alkaline produce from farmlands and other processes were not considered by previous biogeochemical reviews. However, several very recent research studies showing CO2 emissions from soil during nitrifica-tion are consistent with our hypothesis. Despite counter measures to curb excessive CO2 emissions, including carbon capture and geological storage, the increasing Keeling curve for pCO2 may continue to rise because zero carbon policies do not address these causes. We recommend that this hypothesis be further tested by in situ experiments in neutral soils and water, designed to compare CO2 emissions under the acidifying conditions de-scribed in this article. Corrective counter measures can then be designed and applied.

The chemical reaction between the quinolone antibiotic oxolinic acid (OA) and Fe(III), Zn(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II) ions results in the formation of metal-based complexes with the following formulas: [Fe(OA)(H2O)2Cl2]2H2O, [Zn(OA)(H2O)Cl]2H2O, [Ca(OA)(H2O)Cl], and [Mg(OA)(H2O)Cl]. We used analytical (C, N, H, Cl, metal analysis) and spectral (FT-IR, 1H NMR, UV-visible) data to structurally characterize the synthesized metal-based complexes of the OA molecule. We found that the OA molecule utilizes the two oxygen atoms of the carboxylate group and the pyridone C=O group to bind the investigated metal ions. The morphological properties of the synthesized OA complexes were assessed using X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The biological properties, specifically antibacterial and antifungal activity, of the synthesized complexes were evaluated in vitro using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion protocol with five bacterial and three fungal strains. The complex containing Ca(II) ions exhibited remarkable antibacterial and antifungal activity against all tested microbial strains, surpassing or equaling the potency of the standard drugs (streptomycin for antibacterial assays and ketoconazole for antifungal assays).

A simple and rapid method for the extraction of D-series resolvins (RvD1, RvD2, RvD3, RvD4, RvD5) released into Leibovitz's L-15 complete medium by head kidney cells from Atlantic salmon and further liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry determination is proposed. A three-level factorial design was proposed to select the optimal concentrations of internal standards that were used in the evaluation of the performance parameters such as linear range (0.1-50 ng/mL), limits of detection and quantification (0.05 and 0.1 ng/mL, respectively) and recovery values (98.99±0.00). The optimized method was used to determine the stimulated production of resolvins by head kidney cells exposed to docosahexaenoic acid, and the results indicated that it is possible that the production was controlled by circadian responses.

Despite the numerous advances in target therapy for the treatment of colorectal cancer, aggressive colorectal cancer remains an incurable disease whose negative modulation of the immune system in the tumor microenvironment is still critical for improving the patient's prognosis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have received attention for their use as cell-membrane-camouflaged nanoparticles and drug delivery systems in nanomedicine derived by nearly all cell types for intercellular communication and regulation in the tumor microenvironment (TME). In this study, M1 Macrophage EVs (M1EVs) were used as nanocarriers of oxaliplatin (M1EV1) associated with retinoic acid (M1EV2) and Libidibia ferrea (M1EV3), or combined together with retinoic acid and Libidibia ferrea (M1EV4) to evaluate their antiproliferative and immunomodulatory potential on CT-26 and MC-38 colorectal cancer cell lines, as well as their capacity to prevent metastases in mouse models of colorectal cancer such as allographic and peritoneal. Tumors were evaluated by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. The cell death profile and epithelial-mesenchymal transition process (EMT) were analyzed in vitro in colorectal cancer cell lines. Polarization of murine macrophages (RAW264.7 cells) was also carried out. M1EV2 and M1EV3 used alone or especially combined (M1EV4) downregulated the tumor progression by TME immunomodulation, leading to a decrease in primary tumor size and metastases in peritoneum, liver and lungs. STAT3, NF-kB and AKT were the major genes downregulated by systems of M1EVs. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) switched M2 phenotype (CD163) towards M1 (CD68) reducing levels of IL-10, TGF-β and CCL22. Furthermore, malignant cells showed overexpression of FADD, APAF-1, caspase-3, and E-cadherin, and decreased expression of MDR-1, survivin, vimentin, CXCR4, and PD-L1 after treatment with systems of M1EVs. The results obtained in this study provided evidence that EVs from M1 antitumor macrophages can transport drugs and increase their immunomodulatory and antitumor activity by stimulating activation or blockage of pathways involved in cell proliferation, migration, cell survival, and drug resistance processes.

A face serum composed of a combination of biologically active compounds was evaluated for safety and efficacy in vitro, in a repeat insult patch test and in a human clinical efficacy trial. The serum inhibited tyrosinase activity modestly, decreased collagenase activity and exhibited notable free radical scavenging activity in vitro. It is gentle to the skin, as the serum did not irritate the skin or produce symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis in the 55 healthy adults that participated in the repeat insult patch test. In the efficacy trial, daily application of the face serum for 30 days significantly increased skin hydration, with all 35 volunteers experiencing improvement. Substantial improvements in skin elasticity, roughness (fine lines and wrinkles), and brightness also occurred during the trial. Dermatological examination also revealed a trend for reduced comedone count with use of the serum. Self-assessment responses revealed that all volunteers experienced improvements in multiple skin quality parameters and that participant perceptions are consistent with the results of the instrumental analyses. These findings indicated that the measured improvements in skin quality are not only statistically significant but are also clinically relevant as they were great enough for users of the face serum to feel and recognize.

The development of a highly specific drug delivery system (DDS) for anti-cancer therapeutics is an area of intense research focus. Chemical engineering of a “smart” DDS to specifically target tumor cells has gained interest, designed for safer, more efficient, and effective use of chemotherapeutics for the treatment of cancer. However, the selective targeting and choosing the critical cancer surface biomarker are essential for targeted treatments to work. The folic acid receptor alpha (FRalpha) has gained popularity as a potential target in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). We have previously reported on a functionalized folic acid (FA)-conjugated amphiphilic alternating copolymer poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (FA-DABA-SMA) via a biodegradable linker 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DABA) that has the essential features for efficient “smart” DDS. This biocompatible DDS self-assembles in a pH-dependent manner, providing stimuli-responsive, active targeting, extended-release of hydrophobic chemotherapeutic agents, and can effectively penetrate the inner core of 3-dimensional cancer spheroid models. The empty FA-DABA-SMA decreased spheroid volume, revealing a previously unknown mechanism of action. Upon further investigation, a size- and shape-dependent interaction FA-DABA-SMA with FR reduced the expression of p53, the product of the highly mutated TP53 gene, and additional oncogenic c-Myc and STAT3 proteins. Here, we investigated how this copolymer influences FR behavior and disrupting the receptor’s functions. Results indicate that FA-DABA-SMA increases FR expression levels in breast MDA MB-231 cancer cells and disrupting FR signaling by the reduction in HES1 and NOTCH1 protein expression levels. Also, FA-DABA-SMA induces apoptosis and further causes a change in the morphology of the MDA MB-231 cells, as well as significantly reduces their ability to migrate in a Scratch wound assay. Collectively, these findings provide a novel insight into the functionalized FA-DABA-SMA copolymer. The 350 kDa and 20 kDa copolymers actively target FRα to initialize internationalization. However, only the large size and sheet-shaped 350 kDa copolymers disrupt FRα signaling. The significance of these novel findings reveals the intracellular activity of the copolymer that is critically dependent on the size and structural shape. This report offers novel therapeutic insight into a dual mechanism of FA-DABA-SMA copolymer for its therapeutic potential for the treatment of cancer.

Fructose in beverages has adverse effects on lipids, glucose and insulin sensitivity after acute and chronic ingestion. There is limited data showing that chronic consumption of fructose in solid foods has harmful effects. We hypothesized that a moderate amount of fructose compared with sucrose in solid food consumed for a month would not adversely influence fasting or postprandial lipids and glucose after an acute fat and carbohydrate load. Twenty-five men and women with prediabetes and/or obesity and overweight consumed in random order two acute test meals of muffins sweetened with either fructose or sucrose, followed by 4-week chronic consumption of 42g/day of either fructose or sucrose in low fat muffins after which the 2 meal tests were repeated. Subjects were randomised to sugar type in the chronic feeding period. Sugar type had no effect on the incremental area under the curve for triglyceride or uric acid at either time point (P=0.4 and P=0.9). There was no overall difference between meal tests at baseline and after 1 month and no effect of consuming sucrose or fructose muffins for 1 month. Fasting triglyceride increased after chronic consumption of fructose by 0.31±0.37 mmol/L compared with sucrose in people with IFG/IGT only (P=0.004). Fructose at a moderate intake of <10% of energy in solid food has no different effects on postprandial triglyceride and uric acid compared with sucrose although fasting triglyceride was increased in people with IFG/IGT after 1 month of fructose muffins suggesting the need for caution.

This study assessed bio-equivalence of high-quality, plant-based protein blends versus Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) in healthy, resistance-trained men. The primary endpoint was incremental area under the curve (iAUC) of blood essential Amino Acids (eAAs) 4 hours after consumption of each product. Cmax and Tmax of blood leucine were secondary outcomes. Subjects (n=18) consumed three plant-based protein blends and WPI (control). Analysis of Variance model was used to assess for bio-equivalence of total sum of blood eAA concentrations. The total blood eAA iAUC ratios of the three blends were: [90% CI]: #1: 0.66 [0.58-0.76]; #2: 0.71 [0.62-0.82]; #3: 0.60 [0.52-0.69], not completely within the pre-defined equivalence range [0.80-1.25], indicative of 30-40% lower iAUC versus WPI. Leucine Cmax of the three blends was not equivalent to WPI, #1: 0.70 [0.67-0.73]; #2: 0.72 [0.68-0.75]; #3: 0.65 [0.62 – 0.68], indicative of a 28-35% lower response. Leucine Tmax for two blends were similar to WPI (#1: 0.94 [0.73-1.18]; #2: 1.56 [1.28-1.92]; #3: 1.19 [0.95-1.48]). The plant-based protein blends were not bio-equivalent. However, blood leucine kinetic data across the blends approximately doubled from fasting concentrations whereas blood Tmax data across two blends was similar to WPI. This suggests evidence of rapid hyperleucinemia, which correlates with a protein’s anabolic potential.

Background: Skin- (SSM) and nipple-sparing (NSM) mastectomies are frequently performed surgeries with a considerable risk for post-operative hematoma or seroma. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a potent antifibrinolytic drug commonly used in many surgical fields but rather novel in plastic and specifically breast surgery. This study investigates the influence of TXA in patients undergoing SSM or NSM with expander-based reconstruction (EbR) on post-operative outcomes. Methodology: A retrospective study was conducted on 132 patients undergoing uni- or bilateral SSM or NSM with EbR between May 2015 and March 2022. Patients receiving systemic TXA treatment for 48 hours following a standardized protocol were compared to those who received no treatment. Multivariable linear regression was performed to identify influencing factors and quantify their effect on drainage volume, duration of drain placement, length of hospital stay, post-operative bleeding, and seroma formation. Results: 132 patients underwent a total of 155 mastectomies (72 in the TXA group, 83 in the control group). TXA significantly reduced drainage volume (-22.3ml, P=0.011). Duration of drain placement and length of hospital stay were significantly shorter in the TXA group (P&lt;0.001 and P=0.001). No significant side effects were reported. Conclusion: TXA is a safe drug if administered respecting the well-defined contraindications. Systemic TXA administration significantly reduces drainage volume in patients undergoing SSM or NSM and should encourage surgeons to reconsider using drains in post-operative protocols. Duration of drain placement and length of hospital stay were significantly reduced in the TXA group but other factors like resection weight might have a more substantial impact.

Glioma is the most common primary malignant brain tumors. Despite advances in surgical techniques and treatment regimens, the therapeutic effects remain unsatisfactory. Immunotherapy has brought new hope to glioma patients, but the immunosuppressive nature of the tumor microenvironment (TME) has limited the therapeutic outcomes. This study aims to reveal the subpopulations and functional characteristics of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), to explore the regulatory effects of chlorogenic acid on the immune microenvironment, and investigate its potential for clinical application. In this study, Chlorogenic acid slowed tumor growth in the mouse model and extended the survival time of the mice. ScRNA-seq analysis elucidated the differentiation trajectories and functional characteristics of BMDMs and microglia, revealing the regulatory effects of chlorogenic acid on these two populations. It enhanced the antigen-presenting function of macrophages and the gene expression related to T-cell immune activation, activated microglia through the JAK-STAT pathway, and improved antitumor functions. Using the target prediction database, a PPI and molecular docking model were constructed, confirming the good affinity of chlorogenic acid with STAT1. A case of a patient treated with chlorogenic acid was reviewed, who survived for 5 years and 6 months, achieved partial remission (PR) after 9 months of treatment, and remains alive with no new symptoms or toxic side effects. Our study revealed the subtypes and differentiation trajectories of tumor-associated macrophages. Chlorogenic acid significantly improved the immune microenvironment of glioma by modulating the function of bone marrow-derived mono-macrophages (BMDMs) and microglia, demonstrating good antitumor effects. This study provides new insights for targeting the regulation of the TME and offers theoretical and practical support for the clinical application of chlorogenic acid.

Diopatra neapolitana (Delle Chiaje, 1841) is one of the most exploited polychaete species in European waters, particularly in Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon in mainland Portugal, where the overexploitation of this resource has led to a generalized decline of local populations. In an attempt to reduce the impact of harvesting, several management actions were implemented, but, illegal poaching still fuels a parallel economy that threats the sustainable use of this marine resource. The present study evaluated the combination of fatty acid profiles and elemental fingerprints of the whole body and jaws, respectively, of D. neapolitana collected from four harvesting locations within Ria de Aveiro in order to determine if their geographic origin could be correctly assigned post-harvesting. Results showed that both fatty acid profiles and elemental fingerprints differ significantly among locations, discriminating the geographic origin with higher accuracy when combining these two natural barcodes than when employing each individually. The present work can therefore contribute for the implementation of an effective management plan for the sustainable use of this marine resource, making possible to detect if D. neapolitana was sourced from no take zones and if it was collected from the place of origin claimed by live baits traders.

Background: The presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms in the gene encoding key en-zyme in the folate pathway methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), causes methylation disorders associated with CAD development. Methods: Study group: 42 patients with CAD con-firmed by coronary angiography. Controls: 16 patients without CAD symptoms or significant coronary artery stenosis, based on invasive coronary angiography or multislice computed to-mography with coronary artery calcification scoring. Real-time PCR genotyping was assessed using TaqMan™ probes. Folic acid and 5-MTHF concentrations in blood serum were determined by LC-MS. Results: c.[1286A>C];[1286A>C] MTHFR polymorphism occurred significantly more often in (CAD+) patients compared to (CAD-) cohort and to the European population. The con-centration of 5-MTHF and folic acid in the subgroups of patients with methylation disorders di-vided by genotypes and (CAD+) was lower compared to (CAD-). Conclusions: The homozygous c.1286 A>C MTHFR variant can be considered as CAD genetic marker. In the subjects with the c.1286 A>C heterozygous and homozygous genotypes, lower concentrations of methyltetrahy-drofolate (5-MTHF) were observed. 5-MTHF can be considered as a biomarker of CAD. Identifi-cation of people at high risk of CAD using genetic tests can contribute to personalized therapy using active (methylated) form of folic acid (5-MTHF) in CAD patients with MTHFR polymor-phisms.

Abstract: This paper outlines the methodology and results for a two species finite volume scalar computational drug transport model developed for simulating the mass transport of Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) ) from a half-embedded single strut implanted in a coronary arterial vessel wall. The mathematical drug transport model incorporates the convection-diffusion equation in scalar form (dimensionless) with a two species (free-drug and bound-drug) mass transport setup including reversible equilibrium reaction source terms for the free and bound-drug states to account for the pharmaco-kinetic reactions in the arterial wall. The relative reaction rates of the added source terms control the interconversion of drug between the free and bound-drug states. The model is solved by a 2-D finite-volume method for discretizing and solving the free and bound drug transport equations with anisotropic vascular drug diffusivities. This model is an improvement over our previously developed model using the finite-difference method. A dimensionless characteristic scaling pre-analysis was conducted a priori to evaluate the significance of implementing the reaction source terms in the transport equations. This paper reports the findings of an investigation of the interstitial flow profile into the arterial wall and the free and bound drug diffusion profiles with a parametric study of varying polymer drug concentration (low and high), tortuosity, porosity, and Peclet and DamKöhler numbers over the course of 400 hours (16.67 days). The results also reveal how a single species drug delivery model that neglects both a reversible binding reaction source term and the porosity and tortuosity of the arterial wall cannot accurately predict the distribution of both the free and bound drug.

Novel pH responsive semi-interpenetrating polymer hydrogels based on tamarind gum-co-poly(acrylamidoglycolic acid) (TMGA) polymers have been synthesized using simple free radical polymerization in the presence of bis[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate as a crosslinker and potassium persulfate as a initiator. In addition, these hydrogels have been used as templates for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (13.4±3.6 nm in diameter, TMGA-Ag) by using leaf extract of Teminalia bellirica as reducing agent. Swelling kinetics and equilibrium swelling behavior of the TMGA hydrogels have been investigated in various pH environment the maxium % equilibrium swelling behavior observed i.e., 2882±1.2. The synthesized hydrogels and silver nanocomposites have been characterized by the UV, FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. TMGA and TMGA-Ag hydrogels have been investigated to study the characteristics of drug delivery and antimicrobial study. Doxorubicin hydrochloride, a chemotherapeutic agent successfully encapsulated with maximum encapulstaion efficiency i.e., 69.20±1.2 and performed in vitro release studies in pH physiological and gastric environment at 37 ℃. The drug release behavior is examined with kinetic models such as zero order, first order, Higuchi, Hixson Crowell, Korsmeyer-Peppas. These release data was the best fitted with the Korsemeyer-Peppas transport mechanism with n=0.91. Treatment effect on HCT116 Cell, human colon cancer cells were assessed with cell viability and cell cycle analysis. Antimicrobial activity of TMGA-Ag hydrogels is studied against to Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia. Finally, the results demonstrate that TMGA and TMGA-Ag are promising candidates for anti-cancer drug delivery and inactivation of pathogenic bacteria, respectively.

There are numerous approaches to model an influence of manufacturing parameters on the dissolution and disintegration of solid dosage forms. A modern approach for modelling and simulating complex and heterogeneous systems such as pharmaceutical tablets focuses on computationally-intensive finite-element or discreet element methods. Industrial challenges such as Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Quality by Design are stimulating computer-based technologies to design, control and improve the quality of pharmaceutical compacts and their performance. In this study the disintegration and dissolution model based on the numerical solutions of the Noyes-Whitney equation and cellular automata supported disintegration model are proposed and evaluated. The results from in vitro release studies of the mefenamic acid formulations were compared to the calculated release patterns from the tablet structures obtained from microtomography experiments and the purely algorithmically created virtual tablets.

In the European Union, according to Regulation (EU) n. 305/11 (Construction Product Regulation, or CPR), cables permanently installed in buildings need additional classification for acidity, performing EN 60754-2. The research on PVC compounds with low smoke acidity helps to produce cables in the best additional classes for acidity, giving the PVC cables the possibility to be used in medium and high fire risk locations. In this paper, some acid scavengers at high temperatures are tested to verify their possible scavenging mechanism and their efficiency in performing EN 60754-2 at different temperatures.

Dietary intake of Wistar rats of biofortified with 8-hydroxy-7-iodo-5-quinolinesulfonic acid (8-OH-7-I-5QSA) kale of both cultivars ‘Oldenbor F1’ and ‘Redbor F1’ for 8 weeks resulted in sig-nificantly higher iodine concentrations in the urine and kidneys of rats, which proves iodine bio-availability. Rats diets with 'Oldenbor F1' and 'Redbor F1' kale non- and -biofortified with 8-OH-7-I-5QSA had a significantly lower or a tendency for lower concentration of TSH, triglyc-eride, total and direct bilirubin, TBARs, uric acid, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) concentrations in serum. Dietary intake of 'Oldenbor F1' and 'Redbor F1' kale biofortified with 8-OH-7-I-5QSA significantly increased the total antioxidant status (TAS). The study confirms that kale biofortified with iodine in organic form iodoquinoline 8-OH-7-I-5QSA is bioavailable and well absorbed by the Wistar rat and has a positive effect on selected biochemical parameters.

Catalytic hydrogenation of a biomass-derived molecule, levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) has been getting a lot of attention from researchers across the globe recently. This is because GVL has been identified as one of the potential molecules for the replacement of fossil fuels. For instance, GVL can be catalytically converted into liquid alkenes in the molecular weight range close to that found in transportation fuels via a process that does not require an external hydrogen source. Noble and non-noble metals have been used as catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of LA to GVL. Of these, Ru has been reported to be the most active metal for this reaction. The type of metal supports and solvents has been proved to affect the activity, selectivity, and yields of GVL. Water has been identified as a potential, effective “green” solvent for the hydrogenation of LA to GVL. The use of different sources of H2 other than molecular hydrogen (such as formic acid) has also been explored. In a few instances, the product, GVL, is hydrogenated further to other useful products such as 1,4-pentanediol (PD) and methyl tetrahydrofuran (MTHF). This review selectively focuses on the potential of immobilized Ru catalysts as a potential superior catalyst for selective hydrogenation of LA to GVL.

In PVC compounds, hydrogen chloride plays a fundamental role in .H and .OH radical trapping lowering the flame energy during combustion. Furthermore, it yields actual Lewis acids promoting the cross-linking of the polyene sequences from PVC degradation and bringing a char layer, protecting PVC items from flames. Therefore, PVC is inherently flame retarded. However, plasticized PVC requires flame retardants and smoke suppressants to enhance fire performance. Low smoke acidity PVC compounds contain potent acid scavengers capable of acting at high temperatures. They react with hydrogen chloride in the condensed phase, making it unavailable in the gas and even in the condensed phase, compromising the reaction to fire and enhancing the smoke produced during the combustion. The effect of the sequestration of hydrogen chloride in PVC compounds for cables by potent acid scavengers has been studied in this paper through measurements of oxygen index, heat release, and smoke production. It is shown that potent acid scavengers strongly affect parameters like fire growth rate in cone calorimetry, specific (total) heat capacity, and specific heat of combustion of fuel gases in micro combustion calorimetry. They neutralize the action of antimony trioxide and Lewis acid precursors commonly used as flame retardants and smoke suppressants in PVC items, making them prone to ignite, release smoke, and spread flame. A new generation of flame retardants and smoke suppressants is necessary to keep low smoke acidity and high fire performances together in PVC items

Binary mixtures of surfactants build a binary mixed micelle in which the ratio of surfactants usually differs from the initial ratio of surfactants in their binary mixture. The thermodynamic stabilization of the binary mixed micellar pseudophase about the hypothetical ideal state (intermolecular interactions between the different particles and the conformational states of the particles are identical to those of monocomponent states) is described by the molar excess Gibbs free energy (gE). The dependence of gE on the molar fraction of surfactant i (xi) from the binary mixed micelle can be described by a symmetric function (symmetry is described to the line parallel to the y-axis and passes through xi = 0.5) or by an asymmetric function. Theoretical analysis (canonical partition function, conformational analysis) examines how the presence of different polar functional groups, some of which are sterically shielded from the steroid skeleton of bile salt (surfactant), affect the symmetry of the function gE of the binary mixed micelle of the cholic acid anion (bile salt) and classical cationic surfactant (hydrophobic tail and polar head). Suppose the steroid skeleton of the bile salt contains non-sterically shielded polar groups (or the temperature is relatively high). In that case, gE is a symmetric function. At the same time, if the steroid skeleton also contains sterically shielded polar groups, then the gE function is asymmetric.

When traditional joint structures are used to widen multi-span continuous concrete box girder bridges, excessive lateral deformation often occurs at the girder ends, typically leading to the squeezing and cracking of seismic blocks by the girder webs. To address these technical challenges, this paper investigates a new type of slide-rail lateral joint structure that can create a longitudinal sliding effect between two bridge decks of the old and new bridge box girders, thereby effectively reducing the lateral deformation at the girder ends. First, this paper employs the finite element method to conduct a numerical analysis of a real-world bridge widen-ing project, exploring the working mechanism and application feasibility of this novel connection method. The results show that, in the case study, if the traditional joint method is used, the lateral displacement at the girder ends can reach up to 40mm after three years of widening. However, when the slide-rail joint structure is employed, the lateral displacement at the girder ends is limited to no more than 6mm. This demonstrates that the new joint method can indeed effectively address the issue of excessive lateral deformation at the ends of the widened struc-ture. Second, given that the slide-rail lateral joint structure is a relatively precise engineering structure, this paper exam-ines the lateral load transfer mechanism under loads such as wheel loads and foundation settlement differences. It discusses the load-bearing characteristics of various components, including square steel pipes, lateral connection rebars, concrete flange plates, and embedded rebars. Finally, through a parameter sensitivity analysis, it is found that the torsional stiffness of the square steel pipes is a critical parameter for ensuring the load-bearing capacity of the structure. Therefore, it is recommended to set the wall thickness of the square steel pipes to 5mm. Based on these research findings, this paper theoretically demon-strates that the new slide-rail lateral joint structure can effectively solve the technical challenges encountered dur-ing the lateral joint widening of multi-span long-span concrete continuous box girder bridges, providing a new solution for this field.

Despite great progress in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF), especially with the development of increasingly effective invasive techniques, many questions remain unanswered regarding the pathogenic mechanism of the arrhythmia and its prevention methods. The development of AF is based on anatomical and functional changes in the myocardium that result from disturbed ion flows and altered electrophysiology of the cardiomyocyte. Electrical instability and electrical remodeling underlying arrhythmia may result from oxidative stress, caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. The role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of AF is not yet completely clarified; however, it is emphasized by the reduction of AF burden after therapeutic interventions that improve mitochondrial well-being. This selected review aims to summarize the mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction related to AF and current pharmacological treatment options tar-geting mitochondria to prevent or improve the outcome of AF.

(1) Background: The recovery method would be important and decisive in the training system. This study aimed to assess the effects of various post-training recovery methods on muscle damage and strength indicators in Paralympic powerlifting athletes; (2) Methods: For this, a crossover study was conducted involving eleven male athletes (25.4±3.3 years, 70.3±12.1 kg). Muscle damage was assessed using blood biochemical markers (cytokines: Th1/Th2 - IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-) and isometric force indicators, including Maximum Isometric Force (MIF), Time to MIF, and Rate of Force Development. These assessments were performed before, immediately after, and at 24 and 48 hours after the recovery protocol: a) Passive Recovery (RP) or b) Cold-Water immersion (CWI). The main results indicated that maximum isometric strength (MIF) significantly improved after 48 hours of CWI application (p&lt;0.05; for all comparison); (3) Results: The analysis of biochemical markers did not yield significant differences between the recovery methods at different time points (p&gt;0.05). There was a significant increase in IL-6 2 hours after (p=0.045) for the CWI condition; (4) Conclusions: CWI significantly improved post-resistance training muscle damage and strength in Paralympic powerlifting athletes.

The true parakeets (Aratinga jandaya) inhabit the northern and central-eastern regions of South America, where their survival is increasingly threatened by illegal wildlife trafficking and anthropogenic activities. These pressures force the birds to seek new habitats, increasing their exposure to heavy metal ingestion in urban environments. This study presents the first documented cases of heavy metal poisoning and its treatment in two A. jandaya specimens rescued and treated at a university hospital in Castanhal, Pará, Brazil. Clinically, bird 1 exhibited dry nostrils and diarrhea, while bird 2 showed wing weakness, slight opisthotonos, a tilted posture, and more erect feathers. Radiographs and blood tests confirmed the presence of metallic content in the ventriculus of both birds. Chelation therapy with calcium edetate at a dose of 70 mg/kg, administered twice daily via oral route for 7 and 10 days, respectively, resulted in the successful elimination of the metal. Both birds were discharged after 1 month and 6 days of treatment, and subsequently released. The chosen chelation protocol proved effective without the need for invasive procedures, marking a significant step in the management of heavy metal toxicity in A. jandaya.

Anemia is common in hospitalized cardiac patients and affects prognosis. Even moderate levels of anemia can be associated with high cardiovascular mortality when compared to normal hemoglobin levels in cases of patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Background: Anemia is a comorbidity potentially treatable, with significant prognostic implications. A restrictive transfusion is triggered by hemoglobin is ≤8g/dl (severe anemia) and a liberal transfusion is considered when hemoglobin ≤10 g/dL. Methods: We perform a retrospective analysis of the patients hospitalized in the Cardiology Department of Constanta County Hospital who required blood derivatives transfusions, between 1st of January 2021 - 31st of December 2021. Results: Out of the total 270 patients, 170 received a single unit of resuspended erythrocyte concentrate within the same month, while 100 required multiple transfusions, receiving between 2 and 5 units during a single hospitalization to correct anemia. Before transfusions, the mean hemoglobin (Hb) level was 7.60 g/dl, with values ranging from 6.50 g/dl to 9.10 g/dl. Men show a higher prevalence (64%) than women (36%), likely due to gender differences in susceptibility to heart conditions. After transfusions, the mean Hb reached 10.05 g/dl (minimum/maximum values of 7.40 and 12.70 g/dl). CKD patients consistently experience higher in-hospital mortality across LVEF sub-groups, while CRS patients have relatively lower mortality rates, with significant associations observed between reduced LVEF and increased mortality across all patient groups. Conclusions: Anemia in heart failure patients is linked to worsening symptoms, including decreased exercise tolerance, increased cardiovascular events, decreased kidney function and higher hospitalization and mortality rates, especially in those with associated acute or chronic kidney failure. The findings aim to inform and optimize clinical decision making, particularly regarding transfusion strategies and risk management in this high-risk population.

Recent advancements in technology, particularly in artificial intelligence and privacy-preserving tools, have facilitated the development of more sophisticated and secure approaches to addressing this challenge. This paper introduces FedWell, a novel privacy-preserving Federated occupant Stress monitoring approach for smart building environments. Our system integrates physiological data from smart yoga pillows (SaYoPillow) and wearable environmental sensors to train a lightweight, edge-deployable Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. The FedWell framework ensures data privacy while enabling collaborative learning across distributed clients using Federated Averaging (FedAvg) aggregation. We conducted experiments using a comprehensive dataset of physiological parameters for stress level detection. The results demonstrate the global model’s exceptional performance, achieving 99.95% accuracy in stress level recognition, with precision of 99.95%, recall of 99.93%, and an F1-score of 99.94%. The global model exhibits a minimal loss of 0.0019% and a low communication cost of 0.08 Mb, highlighting its efficiency for real-time applications.

On-chip integration of 2D materials with exceptional optical properties provides an attractive solution for next-generation photonic integrated circuits to address the limitations of conventional bulk integrated platforms. Over the past two decades, significant advancements have been made in the interdisciplinary field of 2D material integrated photonics, greatly narrowing the gap between laboratory research and industrial applications. In this paper, we provide a perspective on the developments of this field towards industrial manufacturing and commercialization. First, we review recent progress towards commercialization. Next, we provide an overview of cutting-edge fabrication techniques, which are categorized into large-scale integration, precise patterning, dynamic tuning, and device packaging. Both the advantages and limitations of these techniques are discussed in relation to industrial manufacturing. Finally, we highlight some important issues related to commercialization, including fabrication standards, recycling, service life, and environmental implications.

The drug discovery process tends to be grueling, lengthy and expensive, with cost estimates approximating $2.6 billion, consuming over 10 years to complete. Such drawbacks have set many eyes locked onto reducing the costs and accelerating the development. The emergence of Deep Reinforced Learning (DRL) within cheminformatics and bioinformatics has broadens the horizons of de novo drug design. Realizing the full potential of DRL in molecular generation requires selecting the appropriate reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm. In this work, we address these problems by utilizing Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm within the DRL framework for molecular generation. We proposed a new method by utilizing PPO algorithm within the DRL framework, termed PSQ, to enable the generation of new chemical compounds with desired properties. This methodology has demonstrated significant potential in exploring and generating specific molecules by optimizing for targeted characteristics. The PPO algorithm's superior performance in exploring the chemical space and generating compounds with diverse pharmacophore features, functional groups, and biological activities underscores its potential in drug discovery and chemical synthesis. By systematically comparing the outputs of PPO and REINFORCE, we highlighted the robustness and efficiency of PPO in optimizing molecular properties for targeted therapeutic applications.

Catamenial pneumothorax (CP) is an uncommon condition, usually associated with thoracic endometriosis syndrome (TES). TES is characterized by the presence of endometriotic lesions in pleura and lung parenchyma and presents with various clinical signs and symptoms, including catamenial pneumothorax. Their diagnosis is often delayed. Pulmonary endometric lesions, however, often detected in patients with hemothorax and hemoptysis, may be absent in a pro-portion of cases of pneumothorax. The typical presentation of CP includes signs and symptoms of pneumothorax, which occur along with menstruation, most commonly around 24 hours before and 48–72 hours after its onset. However, they may not occur during every menstrual cycle. Suggestive CP lesions on conventional radiography (RTG) include pneumoperitoneum accompanying right-sided pneumothorax, lung opacities, pleural effusion, and nodular infiltrates. Chest and abdomen computed tomography (CT), particularly contrast-enhanced, may additionally show pneumoperitoneum and diaphragmatic lesions. The management of CP includes supportive treatment of acute symptoms and causal treatment to prevent recurrent disease. The article pre-sents the pathophysiology of CP, an overview of diagnostic methods and current therapeutic approaches.

With the rapid development of urbanization, the ecological environment is being destroyed. Taking Barcelona Metropolitan Region as an example, this paper established an ecological environment quality assessment system suitable for different time and region based on remote sensing to evaluate it from 2006 to 2018. And built various OLS models to analyze multiple variables affecting the ecological environment. Finally, the characteristic triangular space structure was used to explain the interaction between the two key variables. The results showed that the ecological quality was unevenly distributed. The largest green space contributed the most ecological benefits, but its area was decreasing and its shape was more fragmented. NDVI was the most significant natural variable related to the distribution of green space. Precipitation was the most closely related climate factor to NDVI. And there was a complex two-way interaction mechanism between the two, and its boundary value was getting higher and higher. In conclusion: The environmental quality of BMR needs to be improved. There is a two-way relationship between the two key factors. The characteristic triangle can successfully explain the interaction mechanism between precipitation and NDVI.

Google services have shifted the use of technology in our daily lives, enhancing our communication, collaboration and access information. Given this pervasive influence, the aim of this analysis is to compare the predictions of Alphabet’s stock price using various datasets and machine learning models and understand which models perform better, not only in terms of predictive accuracy, but also in terms of explainability and robustness. To this aim, we have built three different database, considering the existing economic literature and trying to integrate features deriving from the analysis of the context in which the company works and, in particular, R&D costs from Alphabet’s annual financial reports. We have applied to the database different state of the art machine learning models, ranging from statistical learning models (linear regression), improved with Ridge regularisation, to classic machine learning models such as Gradient Boosting and artificial neural networks, to more recent deep learning models such as recurrent neural networks. Additionally, the models have been compared in terms of the recently proposed S.A.F.E. AI model, which includes metrics that can assess the Sustainability, Accuracy, Fairness and Explainability of AI application in a unified manner, with a metrics that is related to the Lorenz curve and the Area Under the ROC Curve. Our empirical findings show that the choice of the best model to employ to predict Google stock prices depends on the desired objective. If it accuracy, the recurrent neural network is the best model. If it is robustness, the Ridge linear model is the most resilient to changes. If it is explainability, the Gradient Boosting model is the best choice.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are natural cyclic oligosaccharides with the ability to form inclusion complexes with various organic substances. In this paper, we investigate the potential of CD complex formation to enhance the antibacterial activity and antioxidant properties of poorly soluble bioactive agents, such as chalcones, chromenes, stilbenoids and xanthylium derivatives, serving as potential adjuvants, in comparison with standard antiseptics. The interaction of these potential adjuvants with the hydrophobic pocket of methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MCD) was confirmed using spectroscopic methods such as UV-vis, FTIR, and 1H NMR. These complexes, when used in combination with metronidazole, showed a synergy coefficient of 1.36 for chalcones, presumably, via efflux pump inhibition in bacterial cells. To explore the possibility to create theranostic formulation, we used fluorescent markers to visualize target cells, antiseptics to provide antibacterial activity, and natural bioactive agents as chalcones that act as adjuvants. Additionally, new antioxidant compounds were found such as Xanthylium derivative (R351) and 1-methyl-3-(2-amino-3-cyano-7-methoxychromene-4-yl)-pyridinium methanesulfate: the pronounced antioxidant properties of these substances are observed comparable to quercetin in the efficiency. Rhodamine 6G, gentian violet and Congo Red exhibit good antioxidant properties, although its activity is an order of magnitude lower than that of quercetin. However, they have remarkable potential due to their multifaceted nature, including the ability to visualize target cells. The most effective theranostic formulation is the combination of the main drug (metronidazole) + dye/fluorophore (methylene blue / rhodamine 6G) for visualization of target cells + adjuvant (chalcones or xanthylium derivatives) for antiinflammation effect. Formulation options using antiseptics are possible for local use. The presented formulas demonstrate therapeutic potential, allowing simultaneous visualization and therapeutic effect.

Biomarker-based tests are capable of predicting one’s biological age and mortality risk. To complement the suite of biomarker-based measurements, physical and cognitive performance tests can also improve the predictability of these measurement panels. Importantly, these measurements can be administered quite non-invasively and inexpensively, and training programs can be developed to improve parameters in aging. This will be a vital approach in improving the health of the aged and preventing massive healthcare expenditures at the end of life, which may become a serious fiscal issue if not addressed. This review touches on the ways people can measure function, the models that predict mortality based on this data, and the interventions that seek to improve these measures, subsequently extending lifespan and reducing mortality risk (as primary endpoints) and enhancing function and independence as secondary endpoints.

Invasion of plant species has been considered as one of the most dangerous force in biodiversity changes and alteration of soil properties. Due to their significant impacts on ecology and the economy, it is important to find an effective approaches to manage the invasive plants expansion and utilize them as beneficial biomass sources. This review focuses on the characterization of the negative and positive features of invasive plant species in general. Most studies targeted on invasive species removal and lacked an evaluation of their potentials in modern biotechnologies. Currently, there are studies aimed at their use in soil remediation, medicine, the chemical industry, the textile industry, and even gastronomy. Based on these reviews, we bring forward possible future development in this research field, which might serve as a theoretical premise for further researches.

This study evaluates the reliability of Fitbit in assessing frailty based on motor and heart rate (HR) parameters through a validated upper extremity function (UEF) test, which involves 20 seconds of rapid elbow flexion. For motor performance, participants completed six trials of full elbow flexion using their right arm, with and without weight. Fitbit and a commercial motion sensor were worn on the right arm. For HR measurements, an ECG system was placed on the left chest alongside the Fitbit on the left wrist. Motor parameters assessing speed, flexibility, weakness, exhaustion, and HR before, during, and after UEF were measured. A total of 42 participants (age=22.022.67) were recruited. For motor parameters, excellent agreement was observed between the wearable sensor and Fitbit, except for flexibility (ICC=0.870.09). For HR parameters, ICC values showed weak agreement between ECG and Fitbit for HR increase and recovery (ICC=0.240.11), while moderate to stronger agreement was seen for mean HR during baseline, task, and post-task (ICC=0.810.13). Fitbit is a reliable tool for assessing frailty through motor parameters and provides reasonably accurate HR estimates during baseline, task, and recovery periods. However, Fitbit ability to track rapid HR changes during activity is limited.

Compared with maize monocropping systems, maize double-cropping production systems have a much greater nitrogen extraction capacity. This study aims to assess if in these farming systems, animal manures could be applied, using adequate management practices, exceeding the maximum annual amount of livestock manure established in the European Nitrate Directive for vulnerable zones (170 kg N ha-1) without increasing the risk of water nitrate contamination. We compare the risk of nitrate leaching under two fertilisation strategies, one with synthetic fertilisers (M) and the second with maximized application of pig slurry (P). The study was conducted in two contrasting soil types, a deep and heavy-textured soil and a shallow and stony soil. Crop yields and N extractions were not affected by the fertilisation strategies. The nitrate concentrations in the soil below the crop root zone were lower in the deep soil than in the shallow soil, where values exceeded 1000 mg L-1. The soil nitrate concentration was not affected by fertilisation strategies at each site. The results show that pig slurry can be applied above the limit of 170 kg N ha-1, in the conditions of the study up to 360 kg N ha-1, without increasing the risk for nitrate leaching.

Using assembly theory of strings of any natural radix $b$ we find some of their salient regularities. In particular, we show that the upper bound of the assembly index depends quantitatively on the radix $b$ and the longest length $N$ of a string that has the assembly index of $N-k$ is given by $N_{(N-1)}=b^2+b+1$ and by $N_{(N-k)}=b^2+b+2k$ for $2 \le k \le 9$. We also provide particular forms of such strings. Knowing the latter bound, we conjecture that the maximum assembly index of a string of length $N_{(N-2)} \le N \le N_{\text{max}}$ is given by $a_{\text{max}}^{(N,b)} = \lfloor N/2 \rfloor + b(b+1)/2$, where $N_{\text{max}} = 4b^4$ if $b$ is even and $N_{\text{max}} = 4(b^4+1)$ otherwise. For $k=1$ such odd length strings are nearly balanced and there are four such different strings if $b=2$ and seventy-two if $b=3$. We also show that each $k$ copies of an $n$-plet contained in a string decrease its assembly index at least by $k(n-1) - a$, where $a$ is the assembly index of this $n$-plet. Finally, we show that the assembly depth of a minimum assembly index string is equal to the assembly index of this string, the assembly depth of a maximum assembly index string satisfies $d_{a_{\text{max}}}^{(N,b)} \ge \left\lceil \log_2(N) \right\rceil$. Since these results are, in general, also valid for $b=1$, assembly theory subsumes information theory.

Teucrium polium L. is a plant with various claims of ethnobotanical use, primarily for in-flammatory diseases. Chemical studies have already isolated different types of terpenes from the species, and studies have established the pharmacological potential. The present study evaluated the components of T. polium essential oil cultivated in Algerian Saharan Atlas. GC-MS identified the major components as Fenchone (31.25%), 3-Carene (15.77%), cis-Limonene oxide (9.77%), and Myrcene (9.15%). In the in silico prediction, molecules with more than 1% abundance were selected. Regarding Lipinski’s rule, all molecules fol-lowed the rule. All molecules were found to be toxic in at least one model, with some mol-ecules being non-genotoxic (6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13), others being non-mutagenic (5, 7, 9, 14). Three molecules were selected that showed the best results in pharmacokinetic and toxici-ty studies: the molecules that did not present carcinogenic potential (7 - Myrtenal; 9 - Myr-tenol; 14 – Verbenol). The molecular target was established and it seems that all three bind to the Nuclear Factor NF-kappa-B. Based on the docking and molecular dynamics results. These molecules have potential as anti-inflammatory agents, with further in vitro and in vivo studies needed to evaluate their activities and toxicity.

Estuaries are dynamic and resource-rich ecosystems renowned for their high productivity and ecological significance. The Rías Baixas, located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, consist of four highly productive estuaries that support the region's economy through key fisheries and aquaculture activities. Numerical modelling of biogeochemical processes in the rias is essential to address environmental and anthropogenic pressures, particularly in areas facing intense human development. This study presents a high-resolution water quality model developed using Delft3D software, integrating hydrodynamic (Delft3D-FLOW) and water quality (Delft3D-WAQ) modules. Calibration and validation demonstrate the robust performance and reliability of the model in simulating critical biogeochemical processes, such as nutrient cycling and phytoplankton dynamics. The model effectively captures seasonal and spatial variations in water quality parameters, including water temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a. Of the variables studied, the model performed best for dissolved oxygen, followed by nitrates, phosphates, ammonium, silicate and chlorophyll-a. While some discrepancies were observed in inner zones and deeper layers of the rias, overall performance metrics aligned closely with observed data, enhancing confidence in the model's utility for future research and resource management. These results highlight the model's value as a tool for research and managing water and marine resources in the Rías Baixas.

Women constitute most of the global horticulture workforce, where pesticide use is prevalent. Protecting their health, particularly during pregnancy, is essential. However, knowledge about practices among pregnant employees that cause exposure to pesticides is limited. This study aims to identify such practices and assess the impact of pesticide handling knowledge on exposure. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 432 small-scale horticulture women in Tanzania from October 2022 to April 2023. The women were interviewed using a self-reported questionnaire, with descriptive statistics, Pearson’s chi-square, and T-tests used for data analysis. In total, 86% of participants worked in horticulture during pregnancy, with 47.5% continuing into the third trimester. Many engaged in weeding within 24 hours of spraying (57.2%) and washing pesticide-contaminated clothes (51.6%). Most women (93.1%) had limited knowledge of pesticide handling, though some understood mixing (62.5%) and spraying (64.1%) instructions on labels. This study suggests that women working in horticulture engage in activities that expose them to pesticides during pregnancy and have low knowledge of pesticide handling. Such practices expose pregnant women and their offspring to hazardous pesticides. There is a need for deliberate efforts towards protecting women in dangerous workplaces such as agriculture.

Among the theoretical problems with the prevailing theory of cosmology, Lambda Cold Dark Matter (λCDM), the most serious appears to be the twofold problem with the cosmological constant lambda: Dark Energy and Hubble Tension. Despite a two-decade search for systematic errors in astrometry the problems have not been resolved. This paper posits a potential source of error that may have affected astrometry related to the current and past measurements of lambda.

The Business Model Canvas (BMC) and Value Chain have significantly impacted how companies and entrepreneurs develop their business strategies. BMC and the value chain provide a simple visual approach to effectively map out key elements in a business. BMC and the value chain have also been used as foundational models for ecosystem business models. Ecosystem business models are created by integrating the business model canvas and the pie model, known as the Integrated Business Model (IBM). Another method for generating an ecosystem business model is by integrating the value chain and the pie model, known as the Service-Dominant Business Model Radar (SDBM/R). Ecosystem business models with an organizational approach have also provided a broad view of the roles of each organization, divided into five actors: governor, input provider, aggregator, enabler, and end user. In this research, the perspective of the ecosystem business model originates from an ecological analogy. The ecological concept consists of community ecology and ecosystem ecology. Community ecology relates to the types of actors that play roles in the ecosystem, while ecosystem ecology relates to the value chain processes within the ecosystem. This research will discuss the advantages and limitations of BMC, the value chain, and organization as foundational models for ecosystem business models, as well as opportunities to create new ecosystem business models based on the concepts of community ecology and ecosystem ecology. The new business model formed will be applied to electric vehicles in sustainable tourism areas.

Prostate cancer (PCa) pathogenesis relies on intercellular communication, which can involve tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs). TNTs and EVs have been reported to transfer critical cargo involved in cellular function and signalling, prompting us to investigate the extent of organelle and protein transfer in PCa cells and the potential involvement of the androgen receptor. Using live cell imaging microscopy, we observed extensive formation of TNTs and EVs operating between PCa, non-malignant and immune cells. PCa cells were capable of transferring lysosomes, mitochondria, lipids and endoplasmic reticulum as well as syndecan-1, sortilin, Glut1 and Glut4. In mechanistic studies, androgen sensitive PCa cells exhibited changes in cell morphology when stimulated by R1881 treatment. Overexpression assays of a newly designed androgen receptor (AR) plasmid revealed its novel localization in PCa cellular vesicles, which were also transferred to neighbouring cells. Selected molecular machinery, thought to be involved in intercellular communication, was investigated by knockdown studies and Western blotting/immunofluorescence/scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PCa TNTs and EVs transported proteins and organelles, which may contain specialist signalling, programming and energy requirements that support cancer growth and progression. This makes these important intercellular communication systems ideal potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

A total of 96 strains of Nostocales (Cyanobacteria) were established from the laurel forest phyllosphere in the Canary Islands (Spain) and Azores (Portugal) using enrichment media lacking combined nitrogen. The strains were characterized by light microscopy and SSU rRNA gene comparisons. Morphologically, most strains belonged to two different morphotypes, termed “Nostoc-type” and “Tolypothrix-type”. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of 527 SSU rRNA gene sequences of cyanobacteria (95 sequences established during this study plus 392 sequences from Nostocales and 40 sequences from non-heterocyte-forming cyanobacteria retrieved from the databases) revealed that none of the SSU rRNA gene sequences from the laurel forest phyllosphere was identical to a database sequence. In addition, the genetic diversity of the isolated strains was high with 42 different genotypes (44% of the sequences), recognized. Among the new genotypes were also terrestrial members of genus Nodularia as well as members of genus Brasilonema. It is concluded that heterocyte-forming cyanobacteria represent a still largely undersampled component of the phyllosphere in subtropical/tropical forests.

In an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, the challenge of maintaining social cohesion and cultivating a sense of belonging and inclusion within diverse societies has become a critical priority. Traditional notions of social cohesion, often centered on cultural homogeneity and the assimilation of minority groups, have proven inadequate in the face of rising social, cultural, and demographic complexities. This article proposes a transformative approach to redefining social cohesion through the lens of inclusion and belonging – an orientation that embraces diversity, promotes equity, and empowers marginalized communities as active agents of change. Drawing on a comprehensive review of interdisciplinary literature, the article examines the theoretical foundations and multifaceted dimensions of inclusive social cohesion. The analysis synthesizes insights from social identity theory, intergroup contact theory, the capabilities approach, and institutional theory to develop a holistic conceptual framework. This framework comprises four interrelated pillars: (1) promoting equitable access to resources and opportunities; (2) facilitating meaningful intercultural exchange and mutual understanding; (3) empowering marginalized communities and amplifying their voices; and (4) strengthening institutional responsiveness and adaptive governance. The article then presents a systematic review of innovative case studies from diverse global contexts to illustrate the transformative potential of this inclusive social cohesion approach. The case analyses highlight how these multi-dimensional initiatives have enhanced belonging, challenged structural inequalities, and fostered more equitable and resilient societies. Finally, the article outlines policy recommendations and future research directions to advance the agenda of inclusive social cohesion and catalyze positive societal transformations worldwide. By redefining social cohesion through the lens of inclusion and belonging, this article offers a groundbreaking contribution to the scholarly discourse and policy debates on managing diversity, promoting social integration, and building more inclusive and sustainable communities.

Wheat has to face the effects of global warming standing on the thread worldwide, and competing with many crops in the Rabi season (15 Oct to 15 Mar). Wheat is Bangladesh’s second staple, meeting 13.6% of the country's cereal demand. However, despite an annual demand of 7.5 million metric tons (MMT), domestic wheat production in the 2023-24 season was only 1.19 MMT, covering just 15.9% of its demand and necessitating imports costing $2.21 billion. Demand continues to rise by 7-13% each year. Wheat production has declined from 1.99 in the 1998-99 season to 1.19 MMT in the 2023-24 season due to high crop competition with Boro rice, maize, mustard, and other crops during the Rabi season. Wheat production is reduced by other factors, such as low prices and insufficient mechanization, lack of time decision, etc. to purchase wheat grains by the government and businessmen which discourage framers from its cultivation. Expanding wheat cultivation with high-yielding stress-tolerant varieties in fallow lands and non-traditional areas would reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, malnutrition, groundwater harvesting, etc. Our study aims to offer new insights to policymakers and national and international benevolent agencies regarding the reasons behind the decline in wheat production and potential strategies to increase it. Additionally, this content will provide guidelines for policymakers and other stakeholders on how to reduce severe malnutrition and minimize greenhouse gas emissions and groundwater harvesting, thereby supporting the implementation of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This research article investigates the recycling of end-of-life solar photovoltaic (PV) panels by analyzing various mechanical methods, including Crushing, High Voltage Pulse Crushing, Electrostatic Separation, Hot Knife Cutting, Water Jet Cutting, and Magnetic Separation. Each method's effectiveness in extracting materials such as glass, silicon, metals (copper, aluminum, silver, tin, lead), and EVA was evaluated. The analysis reveals that no single method is entirely sufficient for comprehensive material recovery. Based on the data analysis, a new hypothetical hybrid method Laser and High Voltage Pulse (L&HVP) is proposed, which integrates the precision of laser irradiation with the robustness of high voltage pulse crushing. The laser irradiation step would theoretically facilitate the removal of the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulant, preparing the materials for subsequent separation. The high-voltage pulse crushing would then selectively fragment and separate the remaining components, potentially enhancing material recovery efficiency while minimizing contamination. The proposed approach is grounded in the observed limitations of existing techniques. This method aims to offer a more comprehensive and sustainable solution for solar PV module recycling. Further research and experimentation are necessary to validate the effectiveness of the L&HVP method and its potential impact on the field of solar PV recycling.

The migration of cells during the healing process is supported by an electrical potential difference that develops between the edges of skin wounds and the center of the wound. The electrical potential in cells' membranes is responsible for their migration in an electric field. The transmembrane electrochemical gradient differences cause this potential., Concomitant blockade of potassium and calcium channels by amiodarone at a medium dosage favored wound healing [1,2], but the effect was less intense than in the case of selective blocking of potassium channels. This suggested that blocking calcium channels partially antagonizes the effect of blocking potassium channels [8,9]. Since nimodipine blocks both L-type and T-type calcium channels, we decided to study which of these calcium channels are involved in wound healing. Hence, we performed an experimental study in which nimodipine was used in 3 concentrations: 200nM, which block only L-type calcium channels, 1000nM that block both L-type and T-type calcium channels and 10,000 nM, respectively, that block calcium channels and activate CB1 cannabinoid receptors. Blocking of calcium channels favored wound healing under our experimental conditions, but this happened only by simultaneously blocking of the L-type and T-type calcium channels, because only the medium nimodipine concentration had a statistically significant effect.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the mechanical properties of a non-cushioned minimalistic shoe and cushioned shoe during walking at 6 and running at 10 and 14 km∙h-1 in habituated female runners. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the spatio-temporal and kinetic variables of gait in these two shoe conditions. Methods: Twelve habituated female runners completed two trials (cushioned shoe vs. minimalist shoe) with three within-trial speeds (6, 10 and 14 km∙h-1) in a counter-balanced design. Flexible pressure insole sensors were used to determine kinetic variables (peak vertical impact force, average loading rate, active vertical peak force, time to active peak vertical force, and impulse) and spatio-temporal variables (stride duration, cadence, ground contact time, swing time and time to mid stance). Results: Cushioned running shoes exhibited greater energy absorption (690%), recovered energy (920%), and heat dissipation (350%). These differences resulted in the cushioned shoes significantly reducing peak vertical impact (~12%) and average loading rate (~11%) at running speeds 10-14 km∙h-1 while not affecting peak active force, impulse, stride duration, ground contact or swing time. Conclusion: Cushioned running shoes provide significant benefits in energy absorption, energy recovery and heat dissipation, which decreases impact-related forces and loading rates in female runners without changing spatio-temporal variables of gait.

Strong motion records from full-scale structures provide the ultimate evidence of how real structures, in situ, respond to earthquakes. The most effective method for visualizing the recorded response is by animation. This paper presents a novel method for visualization of the motion of a building that is densely instrumented with triaxial accelerometers and rotational seismometers. The method is based on one- and two-dimensional biharmonic spline interpolation of the motion between multiple sensors on a floor or along the building height. It is demonstrated on a 50-story skyscraper uniquely instrumented with multiple triaxial accelerometers per floor, approximately at every five floors above ground and at two basement levels, and two borehole arrays measuring the motion of the soil very near the building foundation. The animations provide valuable insight into the three-dimensional structural response, including wave propagation through the structure and the interplay between translations and rotations, which will be useful for testing existing and developing new methods for structural health monitoring of buildings and for the further development of building design codes. Abstract: This study examines the legal implications of implementing wearable technology in professional sports, focusing on European football leagues. As the adoption of wearable devices in sports continues to grow, it raises significant legal concerns regarding privacy, data protection, and athlete rights. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative analysis of legal frameworks and quantitative survey data from 150 professional footballers across top European leagues. Key findings reveal that 78% of surveyed athletes express concerns about the potential misuse of their biometric data collected through wearable devices (p < 0.001). The study identifies three primary legal challenges: (1) data ownership and control, (2) informed consent and voluntary participation, and (3) potential discrimination based on biometric data in contract negotiations. A comparative analysis of regulatory approaches in different European countries shows significant variations, with only 40% having specific legislation addressing wearable technology in sports.The research also explores the intersection of wearable technology with existing sports law, including doping regulations and fair play principles. A chi-square test indicates a significant association between athletes' awareness of legal rights and their willingness to use wearable technology (χ2 = 15.7, p < 0.01).This study contributes to the growing body of literature on sports law and technology by providing empirical evidence and legal analysis specific to the European football context. The findings have important implications for policymakers, sport’s governing bodies, and athletes' unions in developing comprehensive frameworks to address the legal challenges posed by wearable technology in professional sports.

This report examines the evolving role of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in Japan, especially in light of reduced public concern following the reclassification of COVID-19 as a Category 5 infectious disease in May 2023. With over half of the population estimated to have hybrid immunity from prior infections and vaccinations, this report evaluates the necessity and frequency of additional booster doses. Despite strong recommendations from Japanese medical societies to continue vaccinations, public skepticism remains due to financial burdens, adverse reactions, and the perceived limited benefit of frequent boosters. Studies of antibody responses reveal that individuals with hybrid immunity maintain robust protection, with significantly elevated antibody titers that persist over extended periods. Case studies indicate durable immunity among individuals who have both been vaccinated and experienced breakthrough infections, raising questions about the need for uniform booster policies. This report also discusses the newly approved replicon-type vaccines, currently available only in Japan, which have generated public and professional debate regarding their efficacy and safety.A more personalized approach to vaccination—taking into account antibody titers, prior infection history, and individual choice—is recommended. Ultimately, this report underscores the importance of aligning vaccination policies with scientific evidence and public sentiment to optimize COVID-19 countermeasures in Japan.

Low back pain has frequently been mentioned as the most common sort of chronic pain and numerous studies have confirmed its influence on Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between age, pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, depression, anxiety, pain-related anxiety, chronic pain acceptance and psychological and physical dimensions of HRQoL in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Data were collected from 201 patients with CLBP using sociodemografic data, the SF-36 Health Status Questionnaire (SF-36), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale Short Form 20 (PASS-20), the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ-8) and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NRS). The linear regression model for dependent variable Physical Health (SF-36 PhyH) was statistically significant (F(7,201) = 38.951, p &lt;0.05), explained 57.6% of variance regarding Physical Health dimension of HRQL in patients with CLBP. The linear regression model for dependent variable Phychological Health (SF-36 PsyH) was statistically significant (F(7,200) = 39.049, p &lt;0.05), explained 57.7% of variance regarding Psychological Health dimension of HRQL in patients with CLBP. The findings of this study confirm that age, pain intensity, depression, pain-related anxiety, and chronic pain acceptance are significant predictors of the physical dimension of HRQoL, while pain intensity, anxiety, and depression proved to be significant predictors of the psychological dimension of HRQoL in patients with CLBP.

This study explores Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) by investigating user experiences with two types of robots: Pepper, a social humanoid robot, and Double 3, a self-driving telepresence robot. Conducted in a controlled setting with a specific participant group, this research aims to understand how different robot embodiments affect user perception, interaction patterns, and emotional responses. The findings underscore the role of adaptability, effective communication, autonomy, and perceived credibility in user-centered robot design. Despite limitations in sample size, the study provides insights into the ethical and social considerations of integrating AI in public and professional spaces, highlighting implications for enhancing user-centered design and expanding applications for Social and Telepresence robots in society.

Background: Rhein, an anthraquinone derivative, and gold nanoparticles have demonstrated significant potential in facilitating the theranostics of breast cancer. Rhein inhibits breast cancer by exhibiting a strong binding affinity to the estrogen receptor. In addition, gold nanoparticles, when used as nanocarriers, may enhance the therapeutic effects against breast cancer. This study out-lines the preparation of [124I]rhein-gold for position emission tomography (PET) imaging in a breast cancer mouse model. Method: Gold nanoparticles (30 nm) were prepared using the citrate reduction method. Second, the anthraquinone derivative rhein-cysteine complex was synthesized using the carbodiimide coupling method. Third, the radiosynthesis of [124I]rhein-Cys-gold nanocomposites (RCGs) was performed using the chloramine T method. Specifically, 1 mg of RCGs in dimethylformamide was mixed with Na124I (37 MBq) at pH 12 along with chloramine T (5 mg). The reaction was allowed to proceed for 15 min at room temperature. To remove free 124I, the mixture was purified via centrifugation for 10 min at 10,000 rpm. Results: The radiochemical yield of [124I]RCGs was 65% ± 8.2%, with a radiochemical purity of > 98%. In vivo [124I]RCGs targeted MCF-7 cells in a hormone-dependent manner, with cellular uptake values of 25.4 ± 1.59% at 15 min, 27.1 ± 1.27% at 30 min, 28.6 ± 0.38% at 60 min, and 15.97 ± 0.66% at 120 min. In vivo small-animal PET images of [124I]RCGs showed significant uptake in human breast cancer and MCF-7 tumors. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the synthesis and biological evaluation of [124I]RCGs. [124I]RCGs showed high cellular uptake in a time-dependent manner. PET images of [124I]RCGs confirmed their high affinity for MCF-7 tumors in mice from 1 h to 24 h. These results suggest that [124I]RCGs are promising radiopharmaceuticals, demonstrating potential both as an imaging agent and therapeutic option for estrogen-receptor-targeted breast cancer treatment.

The escalating use of plastic materials in agricultural practices has substantially increased the amount of plastic waste directed to landfills, leading to significant environmental and ecological challenges. Conventional disposal methods have been found to release hazardous pollutants, including microplastics and toxic chemicals, exacerbating these concerns. This study aims to address the environmental impact of agricultural plastic waste by exploring advanced reprocessing technologies and characterising the processed waste to assess its physical, mechanical and thermal properties. Synthetic polymer-based bale twine (BT) waste, commonly used in livestock farming, was processed using an economically viable melting machine developed by Ritchie Technology. The BT and processed bale twine (PBT) were analysed to understand their properties. Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy revealed that the waste primarily consisted of polypropylene (PP). Thermal analysis indicated that the melting temperature of the PBT was 162.49 °C, similar to virgin PP. Additionally, tensile testing revealed that the PBT had a strength of 13.06 MPa and Young's modulus of 434.07 MPa. The PBT was further transformed into a bench that can be applicable in outdoor applications. Furthermore, PBT was extruded into 3D printable filament. Therefore, it is evident that bale twine waste can be given a second life through an economically viable technology.

The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed digital advertising, advancing precision, efficiency, and scalability far beyond the capabilities of traditional advertising methods. We examine the evolution of AI in digital marketing, explore current trends, and assess emerging technologies such as federated learning and transfer learning, emphasizing their role in real-time ad personalization, campaign optimization, and enhanced user engagement. Through an exploration of AI-driven strategies used by major corporations such as Google, IBM, and Coca-Cola, this paper underscores AI’s transformative impact on advertising and anticipates future trends that may further revolutionize the field. Additionally, we address key challenges of deploying AI at scale, including issues of interpretability, ethical considerations, and data privacy, offering potential solutions.

The article addresses the issues of scalability and security in blockchain networks, with a focus on sharding algorithms and decentralized data storage. Key challenges include the low throughput and high transaction latency in public networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Sharding is examined as a method to enhance performance through data distribution, but it raises concerns regarding node management and reliability. Sharding schemes, such as Elastico, OmniLedger, Pyramid, RepChain, and SSchain, are analyzed, each presenting its own advantages and drawbacks. Alternative architectures like Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) demonstrate potential for improved scalability but require further refinement to ensure decentralization and security. Protocols such as Brokerchain, Meepo, AHL, Benzene, and CycLedger offer unique approaches to addressing performance and transaction consistency issues. The article emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach, including dynamic sharding, multi-level consensus, and inter-shard coordination. Additionally, a conceptual model is proposed that incorporates sharding of transactions, states, and networks, which enables greater scalability and efficiency.

Taking AI workloads over a decentralized network could bring better fault tolerance, guarantee data safety, and increased privacy. This research explores the challenges of centralized AI, such as data confidentiality, scalability, and accessibility, while discussing the promise of decentralized AI. Combining IPFS with decentralized systems improves scalability, data protection, and fault tolerance.

Agro-industrial lignocellulosic waste can be bioconverted to fungal biomass and then utilized as a high nutritional value food alternative for ruminants, with potential for ruminal methane (CH4) mitigation. This study was carried out to evaluate the changes in the enzymatic expression and nutritional value of palm kernel cake fermented with Pleurotus ostreatus (FPKC), as well as the differences in the in vitro fermentation parameters and methane production in diets based on tropical forages with the inclusion of 20% FPKC. The highest activity of laccases and cellulases occurred on day 13 with values of 0.75 ± 0.09 U/g and 266.7 ± 20.8 U/g; respectively. The biological pretreatment decreased the contents of (p< 0.05) neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and lignin (LIG) by 29%, 20.5% and 46.6% respectively, while those of crude protein (CP) increased by 69.65%. Climate Change is among the greatest threats to health in the 21st century, requiring urgent scale-up of adaptation interventions. We aim to summarize adaptation interventions that were funded by the Belmont Forum and the European Union, the largest global funders of climate change and health research. A systematic search was conducted (updated February 2023) to identify articles on adaptation interventions for health within this funding network. Data extracted included study characteristics, types of interventions, and study outcomes. Results were synthesised narratively within the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. 197 articles were screened, with 37 reporting on adaptation interventions. The majority of interventions focused on the general population (n=17), with few studies examining high-risk populations such as pregnant women and children (n=4) or migrants (n=0). Targeted interventions were mostly aimed at behaviour change (n=8) and health system strengthening (n=6), while interventions with mitigation co-benefits such as nature-based solutions (n=1) or the built environment (n=0) were limited. The most studied climate change hazard was extreme heat (n=26). Several studies reported promising findings, principally on interventions to counter heat impacts in workers and pregnant women, and improving risk awareness in communities. These findings provide a platform on which to expand research and public health interventions towards safeguarding public health from the effects of climate change.

This study examines the relationship between safety climate and safety performance in large-scale construction sites in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,203workers from 22 large-scale construction sites. The Nordic Safety Climate Questionnaire was administered using interviews. A model was hypothesized to determine the interrelations between safety climate and performance; examined and validated using confirmatory factor analysis. The results show that the mean score of the seven safety climate dimensions was low: 2.70, ranging from 2.33 to 3.08. Similarly, the mean score of the safety performance construct was 2.95 for safety participation and 3.58 for safety compliance. The model predicts a strong positive correlation between safety climate and the safety performance constructs with 29.2% of the variance in safety involvement and 28.6% of the variance in safety compliance. The suggested association between self-reported injuries and safety climate was not confirmed. Nonetheless, a Pearson correlation analysis demonstrates a statistically significant negative correlation with safety climate. In conclusion, a low score for all the safety climate dimensions shows safety in the construction sector needs improvement. Safety climate positively influences employees’ safety behavior (safety compliance and safety participation) and minimizes occupational injuries.

Achieving Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)-free status without vaccination marks a significant milestone for Brazil, a major agricultural powerhouse with extensive cattle herds and vast borders. This certification represents not only a scientific and logistical achievement but also an oppor-tunity for enhanced market access and strengthened biosecurity. However, transitioning to this status involves challenges, including maintaining stringent monitoring and surveillance, man-aging porous border regions, and mitigating risks from neighboring regions with varying FMD statuses. This review explores the expectations surrounding Brazil’s new status, including antic-ipated economic benefits, the influence on Brazil’s international trade position, and the role of sustainable disease management practices. We also discuss potential risks, such as accidental re-introduction and surveillance gaps, which could impact livestock health and trade dynamics. With a focus on effective biosecurity, regional cooperation, and advanced diagnostic capabilities, Bra-zil’s journey to maintaining FMD-free status highlights both the opportunities and complexities of disease control in a nation deeply reliant on its agricultural sector. This status demands ongoing surveillance to support Brazil’s agricultural economy and ensure long-term health security for its livestock industries.

This study proposes indicators based on urban, demographic, and hydrological parameters to assess the effectiveness of low-impact development (LID) techniques, such as rooftop rainwater harvesting, aimed at reducing water scarcity in a residential area vulnerable to water shortages in a semi-arid city in the Global South. In the study area, the necessary water demand is identified according to land use requirements established by national and local regulations, and an urban configuration pinpoints spaces suitable for rainwater harvesting for self-consumption. Additionally, hydrological design conditions are defined to evaluate the potential volumes of recoverable water. Accordingly, indicators of infiltrated water, availabel water for consumption, runoff water, and sufficient water are established, enabling the proposal of strategies to mitigate water scarcity and enhance water management.

(1) Background: A new type of capillary refill time measurement system is proposed to be designed to achieve non-invasive, mechanised and standardised measurement of the microcirculatory status of the human body; (2) Methods: First, a mechanical measurement device based on electromagnetic pressurisation technology was designed for the measurement of microcirculation monitoring indexes such as capillary refill time, and the measurement control logic was set based on clinical application scenarios; second, the haemoglobin content in the arterial blood flow in the distal capillary bed was continuously monitored, and a software system was designed for the automatic acquisition, transmission, analysis, computation, and storage of the raw data and noise removal algorithms were proposed for the mutational noise present in the data; finally, healthy adult subjects were recruited to carry out a preliminary clinical observational study to evaluate the reproducibility and reliability of the measured parameters; (3) Results: A capillary refill time meter test machine was developed with good CRT reproducibility, both between different observers and between different numbers of observations for a uniform observer; (4) Conclusions: Rapid non-invasive monitoring of microcirculation has been successfully achieved, making non-invasive monitoring of microcirculation further mechanised and standardised, with the advantages of simple measurement and high accuracy.

The use of centrifugal pumps for water supply and distribution applications is evident in every industry as they efficiently transport fluid from a certain point. However, the sector faces severe concerns regarding its operating efficiency due to accumulated losses and sudden power consumption growth. Thus, it is crucial to find a remedy to mitigate these concerns and improve the performance of the centrifugal pump. This study aims to provide an improved design of centrifugal water pumps by analyzing the effects of changing its design parameters. Splitter blades, with a length of 80% of the main blade, will be included in the design. Using ANSYS software to generate a baseline design model, CFD analysis will be conducted. Then, an optimization study will be performed using the Response Surface Method (RSM) to formulate an optimized design. Results indicate that finding a perfect balance between the placement of the splitter blades, the design of the volute tongue clearance and thickness, and configuring the ellipse ratio of the splitter blades improves the pump's performance. The optimal design results in 27.35%, 15.70%, 28.18%, 16.67%, and 8.36% improvement in total efficiency, total head, static efficiency, static head, and power consumption, respectively.

In the AQbD framework, DOE plays a very important role as it provides information about how experimental input variables influence the critical method attributes. Based on the information obtained from the DOE, mathematical models are generated and used to build the MODR a robust region of operability. Data treatment steps are usually carried out in software such as Fusion QbD, Minitab, StaEase 360, among others. Although there are many papers in the literature using DOE, none of them address important aspect of data treatment for optimization and MODR generation and compare different software calculations. The purpose of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of data treatment aspects that are frequently misread or not fully understood, such as model selection, ANOVA results and residual analysis. The discussion will be guided using the separation of curcuminoids by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and eight quality attribute as responses. The results highlighted the importance of the correct selection and evaluation of the models due to their influence the generation of the MODR and emphasizes the insertion of the uncertainty in the contour plots to proper obtain the MODR regarding the definitions of the USP General Chapter &lt;1220&gt; and ICH Q14 guidelines.

Falls among older adults pose significant public health challenges associated with severe physical, psychological, and economic consequences. Exercise interventions are crucial for reducing fall risk through diverse biomechanical, physiological, and psychological mechanisms. This integrative review synthesizes evidence from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, and cohort studies published between 2004 and 2024, sourced from databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, EBSCO (EDS), and Google Scholar. Key findings highlight that balance and strength training enhances postural control, gait stability, and joint mobility while promoting neuromuscular coordination. Resistance training is particularly effective in mitigating sarcopenia and improving muscle strength and joint function, aiding quick responses to balance perturbations. Cognitive exercises enhance attention, spatial awareness, and decision-making, reinforcing fall prevention. Psychological benefits include reduced fear of falling, increased confidence, improved mood, support adherence and social engagement, and sustaining physical activity. Holistic models demonstrate the efficacy of integrating physical, cognitive, and social elements for comprehensive fall prevention. The review emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary strategies and underscores the need for continued cross-disciplinary research to refine evidence-based practices that optimize outcomes for older adults, thereby highlighting the ongoing nature of the research and the potential for further advancements in the field.

This paper presents a novel approach to relativistic kinetic energy through the lens of the Hypergeometrical Universe (HU) Theory, introducing an Absolute Reference Frame (ARF) that fundamentally reinterprets the Lorentz transformation. HU suggests that the physics underlying Lorentz transformations is not an intrinsic time dilation or relativistic mass increase but rather an Absolute-Velocity-Dependent Force. This force diminishes at high velocities, effectively tapering off particle interactions and yielding a bounded kinetic energy that matches classical expectations at the speed of light: KE = mc**2 /2. This model contrasts sharply with conventional relativity, which predicts unbounded kinetic energy as velocity approaches c. This theoretical divergence finds a compelling empirical anchor in the unusual case of Soviet scientist Anatoli Bugorski, who survived exposure to a high-energy proton beam. While relativistic models would predict an energy deposition near 4.6 kJ, likely resulting in fatal damage, Bugorski’s injuries aligned closely with HU’s prediction of a capped energy deposition, around 0.285 J. The HU model explains this outcome as a natural consequence of diminished force interactions at relativistic speeds, leading to reduced energy transfer upon impact. This reframing has significant implications for high-energy physics and particle penetration in solid materials. According to HU, reduced force efficiency at high velocities leads to phenomena traditionally interpreted as time dilation and relativistic mass. For example, at near-light speeds, particles encounter lower interaction cross-sections, resulting in greater penetration, not because of a true mass increase but due to a physical tapering of the HU force. The paper proposes calorimetric experiments in particle accelerators to empirically differentiate between HU and relativistic predictions. By measuring thermal energy deposition instead of relying on penetration depth, these experiments could directly observe the Absolute-Velocity-Dependent Force in action. This approach could profoundly impact our understanding of high-energy dynamics, particularly in applications like spacecraft shielding. This work invites experimental physicists and theorists to explore HU’s framework through accessible computational models and experimental designs provided in accompanying GitHub repositories. This innovative model challenges the established foundations of relativity and offers a new perspective on high-velocity particle interactions, making it a pivotal contribution to modern physics and potential aerospace applications.

Sonoelastography, a novel ultrasound-based technique, is emerging as a valuable tool in prenatal diagnostics by quantifying tissue elasticity and stiffness in vivo. This review explores the application of sonoelastography in assessing maternal and fetal health, with a focus on cervical, placental, pelvic floor, and fetal tissue evaluations. In the cervix, sonoelastography aids in predicting preterm birth and assessing labor induction success. For the placenta, it provides insights into conditions like preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction through elasticity measurements. Assessing fetal tissues, including the lungs, liver, and brain, sonoelastography offers a non-invasive method for evaluating organ maturity and detecting developmental anomalies. Additionally, pelvic floor assessments enable better management of childbirth-related injuries and postpartum recovery. While current studies support its safety when used within established limits, further research is necessary to confirm long-term effects. Future advancements include refining protocols, integrating machine learning, and combining sonoelastography with other diagnostic methods to enhance its predictive power. Sonoelastography holds promise as an impactful adjunct to conventional ultrasound, providing quantitative insights that can improve maternal and fetal outcomes in prenatal care.

This paper explores the overall picture regarding security systems in healthcare through an extensive review of the literature. As the healthcare sector has now become digitalized, the security of healthcare systems and, by extension, the protection of patient data is a key concern in the modern era of technological advances. Therefore, a secure and integrated system is now essential. Thus, to evaluate the relationship between security systems and healthcare quality, we conducted literature research to identify studies reporting their association. The timeline of our review is based on published studies covering the period from 2018 to 2024, with entries identified through a search of the relevant literature, focusing on the most recent developments due to advances in artificial intelligence and algorithmic approaches. Thirty-three studies were included in our final survey. Our findings underscore the critical role of security systems in healthcare that significantly improve patient outcomes and maintain the integrity of healthcare services. According to our approach, the studies analyzed highlight the growing importance of advanced security frameworks, especially those incorporating artificial intelligence and algorithmic methodologies, in safeguarding healthcare systems while enhancing patient care quality. According to this study, most of the research analyzed uses algorithmic technology approaches, many researchers prove that ransomware is the most common threat to hospital information systems, and more studies are needed to evaluate the performance of the systems created against this attack.

This study presents the development of zirconium polycarboxylate gel systems as substrates for advanced fluorescence sensing devices. Zirconium-based metal-organic gels (MOGs) offer a promising alternative due to the robustness of the Zr-O bond, which provides enhanced chemical stability. In this work, zirconium polycarboxylate gels were synthesized using green solvents in a rapid room temperature method. Fluorescein, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and 4,4',4'',4'''-(porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakisbenzoic acid were incorporated as fluorophores to give the gel luminescent properties, enabling it to be used as a sensor. These fluorophores produce specific changes in the perceived colour and intensity of the fluorescence emission upon interaction with different analytes in solution, allowing a qualitative identification of different solvents and compounds. However, the fragile structure of neat gels hinders reproducible quantitative analysis of fluorescence emission, so to increase mechanical stability during manipulation, a composite material was developed by combining the MOGs with quartz microcrystals, which proved to be a more reliable fluorescent system. The results show that the material can identify univocally different solvents and analytes in aqueous solutions by the quantitative analysis of the emissions intensities. This work presents an innovative approach to create advanced fluorescence sensors with improved mechanical properties and stability using zirconium polycarboxylate gels and multiple fluorophores.

Background/Objectives: Hospitalization among older adults represents an increasingly significant challenge in Mexico due to the high prevalence of chronic diseases and the current strain on the country’s public healthcare services. This study aims to develop a predictive model for hospitalization using longitudinal data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. Methods: Three machine learning models based on RF were designed and evaluated under different data partition configurations, with and without interaction between inputs. The models were validated using nested cross-validation to ensure robustness and prevent overfitting. Evaluation metrics included sensitivity, specificity, and the kappa coefficient, along with their respective standard errors. Results: The M2 model, which included interaction and a 20% test proportion, achieved the best balance between sensitivity (0.7215, standard error ±0.0038) and specificity (0.4935, standard error ±0.0039), despite the imbalance in the dataset and the heterogeneity of the population. This ability of the model to balance performance allows it to handle the complexities of predicting hospitalizations well across different patient profiles. Conclusions: The M2 model shows great potential for clinical application by enabling the anticipation of hospital demand and enhancing resource planning. This suggests substantial benefits for healthcare systems, particularly in optimizing the care of older adults. Future research will focus on integrating subgroups based on comorbidities and applying advanced techniques for handling missing data to further optimize predictive capacity.

In September 2024, bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) was first identified in Portugal, specifi-cally in the Alentejo region (Évora District), using molecular diagnostic methods. The initial case involved a sheep exhibiting severe clinical symptoms, including head oedema, prostration, nasal discharge, and significant respiratory distress. A subsequent case was documented in another sheep from a different farm within the same district, which presented with high fever (41.5°C), nasal discharge, and arthritis, ultimately resulting in mortality. Within one month of these initial detections, additional cases in both sheep and cattle were reported in neighboring districts, indi-cating the virus rapid spread within the region. In response to this emerging threat, extensive monitoring efforts are being undertaken to delineate the distribution of BTV-3, and vaccination campaigns targeting this serotype have been initiated. These measures aim to mitigate the impact of the virus on livestock health and prevent further transmission.

The transition to sustainable systems often faces significant challenges, with polarisation emerging as a critical obstacle due to divergent views on sustainability. Understanding the underlying drivers of polarisation and promoting inclusivity in decision-making processes is essential for fostering collective action. This study uses the agent-based HUMAT framework to develop a dialogue tool to explore the complexities of community opinion dynamics such as polarisation and potential pathways to reconciliation in divided communities. By simulating scenarios such as unsatisfied, divided, and reconciled communities, the tool provides key insights into how individual characteristics—such as assertiveness and openness to change—affect community cohesion, satisfaction, and collective decision-making outcomes. Moreover, the study examines intervention strategies that reduce polarisation, offering actionable pathways toward consensus. The visual representation of dynamics across different scenarios has the potential to engage stakeholders in the decision-making process, encouraging deeper reflection on community collaboration and participation. While limitations such as simplified assumptions and the lack of empirical calibration limit its predictive accuracy, the dialogue tool shows strong potential for both educational and policy applications. It offers valuable insights into social influences, conformity, and opinion dynamics, making it a promising tool for fostering inclusive, informed decision-making processes and enhancing community engagement in sustainability transitions.

PRMT5 methyltranserase is an enzyme that produces monomethyl arginine (MMA) as well as symmetric dimethyl arginine (sDMA), posttranslational modifications that regulate several cellu-lar processes, including stage conversion in parasitic protozoa. Entamoeba histolytica, the etiologic agent of human amebiasis, has two stages in its life cycle, the trophozoite, which is the replicative form, and the cyst, corresponding to the infective phase. The study of the molecular mechanisms that regulate differentiation in this parasite has been overdue by the lack of efficient protocols for in vitro encystment. For this reason, Entamoeba invadens, a reptile parasite, has been used as a dif-ferentiation model system for the genus. Here, we demonstrated the presence of sDMA in E. in-vadens, which increases during encystment, and identified the PRMT5 protein of this microorgan-ism (EiPRMT5). In addition, we performed 3D modeling of this enzyme, as well as its molecular docking with the PRMT5 inhibitor EPZ015666, which predicted the affinity of the drug for the ac-tive site of the enzyme. In agreement, EPZ015666 reduced trophozoite viability and encystment. Therefore, EiPRMT5 is a potential target for the inhibition of amebiasis spread.
