This study investigates the impact of stakeholder participation on the efficiency of irrigation projects by the implementation of Farmers Water User Committees (FWUCs). Utilising a difference-in-difference methodology, the research analyses data from 79 irrigation projects over a 13-year period. The findings reveal a statistically significant positive correlation between FWUC establishment and improved project effectiveness, even when controlling for variables such as project size, age, and socio-economic factors. Smaller, newer projects exhibited higher effectiveness, whilst remote locations faced greater challenges. The temporal analysis indicates that the benefits of participation accrue gradually, underscoring the importance of sustained implementation. These results carry significant implications for public enterprise reform, particularly in irrigation management. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the efficacy of stakeholder participation in public enterprise management, offering valuable insights for policymakers seeking to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of irrigation systems.

In the fields of partnership research and social innovation, there have been an increasing number of calls for evidence regarding the kind of collaborative multi-level governance structures that might support large scale transformation processes, specially towards climate-neutral cities. This paper conceptualizes a new type of intermediary actor; the Systemic Collaborative Platform (SCP). Using the example of a multi-stakeholder arrangement set up to design and implement Madrid’s Climate Neutrality Roadmap, the key features of an SCP include a focus on multi-stakeholder and cross-sectoral collaboration for public policy development, in this case operating at both a systemic level and a city scale, and a strong link to a key actor within this regime (a city council). Our study reveals how a SCP can contribute to articulation of a shared mandate among city actors and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of a targeted transition by attracting, aligning and managing a wide and diverse organizational ecosystem through distributed facilitation, collaborative leadership and continuous learning.

Novel photocatalysts were synthesized through the association of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with commercial (P25) titanium dioxide (TiO2) by sonication. The resulting TiO2/CQDs compo-site was then incorporated into the polyamide 66 (PA66) biopolymer nanofibers using the elec-trospinning technique, considering a composite nanoparticles-to-polymer ratio of 1:2 in the elec-trospinning precursor solution. The produced nanofibers presented suitable morphology and were tested for the photocatalytic degradation under simulated solar radiation of 10 mg/L of amoxicillin (AMX) and sulfadiazine (SDZ), in phosphate buffer solution (pH 8.06) and river wa-ter, using 1.5 g/L of photocatalyst. The presence of the photocatalyst increased the removal of AMX in phosphate buffer solution by 30 times, reducing the AMX degradation half-life time from 62 ± 1 h (without catalyst) to 1.98 ± 0.06 h. Moreover, SDZ degradation half-life time in phosphate buffer solution was reduced from 5.4 ± 0.1 h (without catalyst) to 1.87 ± 0.05 h in the presence of the photocatalyst. Furthermore, the PA66/TiO2/CQDs were also efficient in river wa-ter samples, and maintained their performance in at least three cycles of SDZ photodegradation in river water. The presented results evidence that the produced photocatalyst can be a promis-ing and sustainable solution for antibiotics’ efficient removal from water.

The increasing adoption of distributed recycling via additive manufacturing (DRAM) has facilitated the revalorization of materials derived from waste streams for additive manufacturing. Recycled materials frequently contain impurities and mixed polymers, which can degrade their properties over multiple cycles. This degradation, particularly in rheological properties, limits their applicability in 3D printing. Consequently, there is a critical need for a tool that enables rapid assessment of the flowability of these recycled materials. This study presents the design, development, and manufacturing of an open-source melt flow index (MFI) apparatus. The proposed MFI tool offers a user-friendly and cost-effective solution for evaluating the flow properties of materials from waste streams, thereby enhancing their viability for additive manufacturing applications.

Historically, botanical preparations have been used to improve human health. Their active ingredients are influenced by multiple factors as intraspecies variations, environmental conditions, collection time and methods and the part of the plant used. To ensure the efficiency and safety of these herbal drugs, qualitative and quantitative analyses are required. Tessaria absinthioides decoction (DETa) was reported as hypocholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, antitumor, and antioxidant. This work aimed to analyze DETa, by correlating its chemical composition with cytotoxic and antioxidant properties, to promote its research as an anticancer agent. DETa collections (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022) were analyzed by UHPLC-UV-Vis, UHPLC-DAD-FLD and UPLC-MS/MS; cytotoxicity was assessed on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line, and antioxidant capacity was evaluated by DPPH and FRAP methods; correlation analysis was used to determine biological and chemical markers. The results evidence that biological activities were consistent across collections. Among the quantified compounds, apigenin, naringin, gallocatechin gallate, ginnalin A, myricetin, epicatechin, OH-tyrosol, quercetin, and chlorogenic, tessaric, p-coumaric, vanillic, caffeic, caftaric, ellagic and rosmarinic acids correlated as bioactive and chemical markers. Moreover, tessaric acid could be established as a species marker. Altogether, these findings add relevant information to DETa properties encouraging further exploration of its potential application as anticancer botanical.

BackgroundThe clean energy transition required for decarbonisation of our societies make policymakers targets for broad business and non-business advocacy to ensure one’s often conflicting interests are protected or taken into consideration in public policies. The concept of policy entrepreneurs foregrounds the role of agency in understanding such acts of advocacy. This paper compares strategies used by policy entrepreneurs from different social spheres, advocating policy change or status quo, in four longitudinal cases related to European Union energy and climate policy 2011–2023. ResultsPolicy entrepreneurship was mainly of a cultural-institutional nature, aiming at altering or diffusing people’s perceptions, beliefs, norms and cognitive frameworks, worldviews, or institutional logics. But the actions of the European Commission did also include structural entrepreneurship, aiming at overcoming structural barriers to enhance governance influence by altering the distribution of formal authority and factual and scientific information. Motifs of policy entrepreneurs in the four cases differ, but strategies do not differ significantly between the public, private and civic spheres of society. Results indicate that civil society policy entrepreneurs focus on building broader coalitions than public and private sector entrepreneurs. There is no indication that policy entrepreneurs from a certain sector would be more successful than others in setting the agenda, changing perceptions of policy actors, or influencing actual policy change. However, policy entrepreneurs advocating policy change are more active and use more elaborated strategies than policy entrepreneurs advocating status quo. ConclusionsIt is concluded that policy entrepreneurs advocating policy change are more active and use more elaborated strategies than policy entrepreneurs advocating status quo. Thus, they are more successful in influencing policy outcomes. The European Commission was the only policy entrepreneurs to use structural entrepreneurship. the Commission acts to expand its reach into areas where the European Union does not hold much legal competence according to the constitution of the European Union. This comes with democratic deficits related to accountability and legitimacy and should be combated to reinstate and reinforce the position and powers of both the national and European legislators in taking the important decisions that impact the lives of European citizens.

Snakebite envenoming represents a critical global health challenge, particularly prevalent in regions with limited access to healthcare resources, where venomous snakes pose a significant threat to human populations. Antivenom therapy which mainly rely on antibody production by immunization of large animals with venom components is labour intensive, time consuming and associated with various ethical concerns. Consequently, access to quality and affordable antivenom remains limited in many affected regions with high mortality associated with snakebites. In traditional medicine, many plant species have been ethnobotanically reported for their antivenom properties and are used to neutralize animal toxins. Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a diverse group of toxins found in various organisms, including plants that possess the ability to inhibit protein synthesis by irreversibly damaging the ribosomes. Even though considered to be harmful, the biological role of RIPs has gained increasing attention in recent years due to their potential therapeutic implications. With these insights, this review underscores the potential of RIPs as promising candidates for adjunct treatments in snakebite management strategies. In silico analysis by molecular docking of RIPs with major snake venom proteins resulted in effective binding and shows the interface residues involved in the interaction. This integrative approach enhances our understanding of snakebite pathophysiology, accelerating the development of novel next-generation antivenom therapies that are safer and more effective.

This study investigates the effect of different variables in the optimization of a hybrid air charging systems for marine diesel engines, exploring the potential for energy recovery and assistance using electric machines. The optimization parameters include turbine speed, compressor power, start of injection, turbomachine size, and valve timing. At low engine speeds, the larger improvements come from increasing compressor power, which increases air-to-fuel ratio compared with the baseline turbocharging. As free-floating turbocharged engines are known to have low air-to-fuel ratio at low engine speeds, the relative improvement of the hybrid architecture is large at low engine speeds, being near to 10% less BSFC. At high engine speeds, the largest influence is marked by the SOI, an early injection obtains a faster combustion, which improves gross efficiency. However, the relative improvement compared with baseline turbocharger is less than 1% at high engine speeds. Due to the distribution of relative improvement of BSFC, this architecture has a deeper impact on fuel consumption in vessel operating cycles that focus on low engine speeds and loads, such as those of tugboats.

Valles Marineris (VM), the most prominent example of a Martian Valley Network, has been extensively studied for over 50 years, yet no detailed examination of the principal azimuths of the system exists. To address this, two methods are presented to precisely calculate the principal azimuths, a Bezier Spline analysis, and a GIS technique. The medial axis of the main canyon of VM was determined analytically from cubic polynomial splines fitted to 93 coordinate points along both north and south edges of the canyon. These splines were optimized, and medial axis points were calculated through numerical techniques that ensured orthogonality between the tangents of each spline and their connecting normal lines. 1,000 medial axis points were extracted, and various regression models constructed, including fitting to sinusoidal and cubic polynomial curves, achieving accuracies with R² values of 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. Principal azimuths were obtained using the sinusoidal equation with the slope of the tangent at any point x simply determined by the derivative of the curve’s equation. This analytic approach was cross-validated by a GIS method (using QGIS software), where a vector medial axis was obtained which produced principal azimuths that agreed with values from the analytic study with a correlation coefficient of 1.00, and a p value of 6.43e-65. The findings demonstrate that an azimuthal framework can be rigorously constructed as a potential standard reference in VM geoscience, replacing less precise and ambiguous compass bearings with the accurate azimuths necessary for high-resolution spatial analysis for future investigations.

Crystallization of soluble salts represents a significant deterioration mechanism for porous building materials in cultural heritage, with substantial economic consequences. These salts can originate from geogenic sources (such as soil leachate, sea salt aerosols, and material incompatibilities in historical constructions) or anthropogenic sources (including environmental pollution and organic waste). This study investigates the capillary rise of retained and sustained water within soil, which is subsequently absorbed by calcareous rocks in monuments. This process leads to a range of damages, from superficial staining and efflorescence to more severe material degradation and mass loss. The paper examines the capillary rise phenomenon and analyzes the typology and origin of salts that predominantly impact the durability and mechanical resistance of calcareous rocks used in the construction of historic buildings in Spain.

Gastrointestinal cancers are still the leading cause of death worldwide. This is related, among other things, to non-specific symptoms, especially in the initial stages, and also to limited possibilities of treatment. Therefore, research is still being conducted to improve the detection of this type of cancer and increase the effectiveness of therapy. The potential application of natural compounds in cancer management deserves special attention. In the group of such products there are polyphenolic compounds which reveal e.g. anti-oxidative, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and neuroprotective properties. One of such polyphenols is rosmarinic acid, commonly found in plants such as Boraginaceae and Nepetoideae subfamilies of the Lamiaceae (mint) family, including Origanum vulgare, Rosmarinus officinalis Thymus masticmasti chinaythia koreana, Ocimum sanctum, and Hyptis pectinate. A number of studies considers the positive effects of rosmarinic acid in the treatment of many cancers, including gastrointestinal ones such as oral, stomach, pancreas, colon, and liver. The main aim of this paper was to focus on the summarized mechanisms of the action of rosmarinic acid in gastrointestinal cancers.

In the present paper and inspired with a similar construction on Hermite functions, we construct two series of Gelfand triplets each one spanned by Laguerre-Gauss functions with a fixed positive value of one of their parameters, considered as the fundamental one. We prove the continuity of different types of ladder operators on these triplets. Laguerre-Gauss functions with negative value of the fundamental parameter are proven to be continuous functionals on one of these triplets. Different sorts of coherent states are considered and proven to be in some spaces of test functions corresponding to Gelfand triplets.

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a significant global health concern, particularly in regions with high tuberculosis (TB) prevalence, such as South Africa. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of LTBI and assess patient knowledge about the condition in a primary healthcare clinic in rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. A cross-sectional design was used, and convenience sampling recruited outpatients aged 18 years and older with no prior history of TB. Blood samples were analyzed using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold assay to determine LTBI status, and a survey assessed patient knowledge of LTBI. Strong positive correlations were observed between what patients understand by the term LTBI and how is LTBI different from TB (0.70), patients understand by the term LTBI and the risk factors for developing LTBI (0.70), how is LTBI different from TB and the risk factors for developing LTBI (0.78), and how is LTBI different from TB and the recommended treatments for LTBI (0.79), indicating overlap in understanding. In contrast, negative correlations between if patients ever heard of latent LTBI before and patients understanding the term LTBI (-0.25), the risk factors for developing LTBI (-0.22), LTBI progressing to active TB (-0.27), and the recommended treatments for LTBI (-0.27). This divergence points to different dimensions of patient knowledge and awareness. Age, gender, occupation, comorbidities, and HIV status showed varying LTBI positivity trends. Among younger patients aged 20-29, 15.4% tested positive, while the 30-39 group showed a nearly equal split between positive (48.1%) and negative cases. A higher positivity rate was seen in females (39.1%) compared to males (31.6%). Unemployed individuals had higher positivity rates, suggesting socioeconomic factors' influence. Comorbidities, especially hypertension, diabetes, and asthma, correlated with higher LTBI positivity among females, but this was less evident in males. HIV-positive patients had a higher LTBI-negative rate compared to HIV-negative patients. These findings suggest that demographic and health factors, including age, gender, occupation, comorbidities, and HIV status, may predict LTBI positivity.

Background: The COVID infection became the source of serious disagreements between scientists, doctors, politicians and private citizens, directly after it’s detection in the population in January 2020. The pandemic had some very unusual properties as well as the people’s reaction to it. It was feared, that the virus might be used, intentionally or accidentally, to interfere with the usual, democratic way of the upcoming election. Objective: Re-search the original COVID statistic and metadata to obtain better understanding of the pandemic including the biological (viral) as well as the social (human) aspects of it. Provide a professional, independent, non-biased view of the pandemic, that is not polluted by political and media suggestions. Methods: Publicly available data – covering the first 5 months of the COVID pandemic, 2020 Jan-May - were collected and analyzed with the usual, common statistical methods, like student’s t-test and regression analyses.The political attitude of the states were characterized by a ratio (D/R) of the number of left, democrat (D) and right, republican (R) oriented citizens in the respective states, as determined by opinion research. Results: De novo statistical analyzes of publicly available data (covering the initial five months of the pandemic) suggests that the negative medical consequences of COVID pandemic were significantly more expressed in “democrat-dominated” (D) states than in “republican-dominated”, (R) states. The proportion of COVID test positive persons was higher in D-states (6.831 +/- 1605, n=14 and 1,165 +/- 323, n=13 respectively, p<0.001). The difference in mortality was even more striking, 8-times more person/million population died in COVID related conditions in solid D states than in solid R states (438 +/- 128, and 59 +/- 13; p<0.001, respectively). The COVID associated mortality increased two fold from right to left on the political scale of the states (2.7% +/- 0.3 vs. 5.3% +/- 0.5, p<0.001). The correlation between COVID deaths (mortality) and the age/pre-existing medical condition(s) of the diseased is very strong (R2= 0.98) and the overwhelming majority of COVID “victims” are persons who were close to death even independently of the epidemic. Conclusions: Alarming signals regarding the dangerousness of COVID infection seems to have originated in a few states with predominantly left oriented citizens (high D/R ratio). The COVID mortality statistic seems to be seen and analyzed with little or no respect for the context of mortality caused by other well-known diseases or even by the natural, age related deaths. We conclude that it is absolutely necessary to pay serious attention to the correct analyses and interpretation of the epidemic data to avoid being misled or manipulated by false circumstances.

No data on wild mammals run over along the roads in Osijek-Baranja County, in the north-eastern part of Croatia, have been available so far. Mammals run over from 2016 to 2024 on the Zmajevac-Osijek road, 33.4-km long, were recorded using the road sampling method while travelling back and forth from Zmajevac to Osijek. A total of 86 run-over specimens of wild mammals, classified into eight species and one subspecies, were recorded. The northern white-breasted hedgehog, Erinaceus roumanicus, topped the list with 38 individuals, followed by the European badger, Meles meles, with 23 individuals. Together, these two species amounted to 70.93% of the run-over mammal fauna. Other species and subspecies were recorded in lower numbers. The number of wild mammals run over per kilometer of the observed road section was on the rise from 0.09 to 0.20 in the period from 2016 to 2022, while in 2023 it increased to 0.77 and in 2024 to 0.86. The high proportion of run over wildlife per kilometer is likely due to the high volume of traffic, which disrupts wildlife activities during both day and night.

In the current environmental scenario, the proposal of alternatives for petroleum-based products has considerably increased, looking for bioproducts with interesting properties like biodegradability, sustainability and efficiency, among others. In this sense, the role of biolubricants is promising, offering a wide range of possibilities through different methods and operating conditions. Specifically, double transesterification could be a suitable process in a biorefinery context. The aim of this work was to produce a biolubricant through double transesterification with methanol and neopentyl glycol (NPG) under different reaction conditions, by using homogeneous catalysis (sodium methoxide). As a result, different catalyst concentrations, among other changes in reaction conditions, were used, getting high conversion values (96%) and a final product with viscosity values (20.7 cSt) that allow its use as engine oil (SAE 5W). In conclusion, biodiesel and biolubricant production was feasible through homogeneous catalysis, proving the feasibility of this process at laboratory scale. Further studies, including the use of different heterogeneous catalysts, as well as the implementation of this process at semi-industrial scale, is recommended.

The retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings with Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels presents a promising approach for enhancing seismic performance and overall structural resilience. However, effective integration of CLT with existing RC structures poses significant challenges, particularly concerning the design of connections between CLT panels and the RC structure. This paper introduces a novel connection that addresses these challenges by focusing on both structural and architectural considerations. Structurally, the connection is engineered to provide optimal stiffness, strength, and deformation capacity, ensuring robust performance under seismic and dynamic loads. Architecturally, the design incorporates a pre-defined weak component that facilitates easy access and rapid replacement of damaged parts, thereby reducing downtime and maintenance efforts. The proposed connection was evaluated through a series of monotonic and cyclic loading tests, demonstrating its structural efficiency and reliability. The results indicate that the new connection system not only meets the necessary structural requirements but also offers practical benefits for maintenance and repair, contributing to the overall sustainability and resilience of retrofitted RC buildings. This innovative approach represents a significant advancement in the field of structural retrofitting, providing a viable solution for integrating CLT panels into existing RC frameworks.

This paper presents the development and testing of the passive Almaty Ankle Exoskeleton V.2. The device features a new design with three electric linear actuators, and the shin and foot platforms are connected by links with spherical and universal joints. Functional testing demonstrates the prototype's ability to operate effectively within the natural range of ankle joint movements. Preliminary results indicate that the exoskeleton can reduce calf muscle activation in the work limb where the device is applied. In this the passive exoskeleton is designed for dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, whose operation with numerical results is highlighted by focusing on parameters such as angular velocity, linear acceleration, and angles. These measurements provide valuable information about the exoskeleton's performance and efficiency.

Polymers synthesized with end-of-life consideration allow for recovery and reprocessing. ”Living-anionic polymerization (LAP)” and hydrosilylation reaction were utilized to synthesize hair-end furan functionalized hairy nanoparticles (HNPs) with hard polystyrene (PS) core and soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via a one-pot approach. The synthesis was carried out by first preparing the living core through cross-linking styrene with divinylbenzene using sec-butyl lithium, followed by the addition of the hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) monomer to the living core. The living polymer was terminated by dimethylchlorosilane to obtain the HNPs with Si-H functional end groups. The furan functionalization was carried out by the hydrosilylation reaction between Si-H of the functionalized HNP and 2-vinyl furan. Additionally, furan functionalized polystyrene (PS) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were also synthesized by LAP. 1H NMR and ATR-IR spectra confirm the successful synthesis of the target polymers. Differential scanning calorimetry shows two glass transition temperatures indicative of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) soft phase and a poly(styrene) hard phase, suggesting that the HNPs are microphase separated. The furan functionalized HNPs form thermo-reversible networks upon cross-linking with bismaleimide (BMI) via a Diels−Alder coupling reaction. The kinetics of the forward Diels–Alder reaction between the functionalized polymer and BMI were studied at three different temperatures: 50 °, 60 °, and 70 °C by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The activation energy for the furan functionalized HNPs reaction with the bismaleimide was lower compared to the furan functionalized polystyrene and poly(dimethylsiloxane) linear polymers. The crosslinked polymer network formed from the Diels−Alder forward reaction dissociates at around 140 °–154 °C, and the HNPs are recovered. The recovered HNPs can be re-crosslinked at 50 °C. The results suggest that furan functionalized HNPs are promising building blocks for preparing thermo-reversible elastomeric networks.

Complexity of issues in cancer research has led to the introduction of powerful computational tools for helping experimental in vivo and in vitro methods. These tools, typically focused on studying cell behavior and dynamic cell populations, range from systems of differential equations solved numerically, to lattice models and agent-based simulations. In particular, agent-based models (ABMs) are increasingly used for they capability to incorporate multi-scale features ranging from the individual up to the population level, thus combining statistically aggregated assumptions with individual heterogeneity. In this work, we present an ABM that simulates tumor progression in a colonic crypt, with the aim of providing an experimental in silico environment for testing results achieved in traditional laboratory research and developing alternative scenarios of tumor development. The model also allows some speculations about causal relationships in biologically inspired systems.

Our main result is that chaos in dimension $n+1$ is a one-dimensional geometrical object embedded in a geometrical object of dimension $n$ which corresponds to a $n$ dimensional object which is either singular or non-singular. Our main result is then that this chaos occurs in the first case as either on an isolated or non-isolated singularity. In the first case this chaos is either boundary chaos or spherical chaos which is what happens also in the non-singular case. In the case of an isolated singular geometry one has chaos which can either be boundary, spherical or tubular chaos. We furthermore prove that the prime numbers display quantum behaviour.

This study investigates the pricing of exotic options, specifically Barrier and Asian options, through the application of Monte Carlo simulation. The research commences by establishing the theoretical foundations and closed-form solutions within the Black-Scholes framework. Subsequently, three distinct random walk models are introduced to generate underlying asset paths for simulation purposes. The antithetic variate technique is demonstrated to significantly reduce standard error and accelerate convergence in the pricing of both options, thereby enhancing the precision of Monte Carlo estimates. Notably, the selection of underlying random walk models is found to have a minimal impact on accuracy, suggesting avenues for further research in advanced variance reduction techniques. This study provides valuable insights into the pricing of exotic options, offering implications for finance professionals and researchers, and driving innovation in option pricing methodologies for dynamic financial markets. The research underscores the efficacy of Monte Carlo simulation and variance reduction techniques in pricing complex options, contributing to the advancement of financial modelling and derivatives pricing.

Heart rate and blood pressure, along with body temperature and respiratory rate, are two of the four parameters used to assess the state of bodily functions, as both measures are indicators of heart activity. Therefore, these measurements become a basic procedure in patient diagnosis, necessitating techniques that can obtain them accurately and reliably, while being as non-intrusive as possible for the patient. Using video data, these two vital signs can be determined at any time and place. To achieve this, artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning and deep learning 6 can be applied to overcome the main limitations of conventional remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). This document explains the technical and methodological aspects involved, including the acquisition and preprocessing of video data, the extraction of the rPPG signal, and its subsequent processing, as well as the artificial intelligence model for heart rate estimation and the mathematical modeling for blood pressure estimation. We compared the results for heart rate and blood pressure extracted from videos recorded by a basic smartphone front-camera to a blood pressure monitor and achieved results with reasonable accuracy and correlation. These results are part of the AIVA project, grant agreement 2021/C005/00145071. This project has been funded by Red.es through the Spanish 2021 call for grants aimed at research and development projects in artificial intelligence and other digital technologies.

The development of innovative materials, based on the modern technologies and processes, is the key factor to improve the energetic sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of the electrical equipment. In particular, modeling of magnetic hysteresis is crucial for the design and construction of electrical and electronic devices. In recent years, additive manufacturing techniques are playing a decisive role in the project and production of magnetic elements and circuits for applications in various engineering fields. To this aim, the use of Deep learning paradigm, integrated with the most common models of the magnetic hysteresis process, has become increasingly present in recent years. Particularly in the paper, different Neural networks used in scientific literature, integrated with various hysteretic mathematical models, including the well-known Preisach model, are compared. It is shown that this hybrid approach not only improves the modelling of hysteresis by significantly reducing computational time and efforts, but also offers new perspectives for analysis and prediction of the behavior of magnetic materials, with significant implications for the production of advanced devices.

This paper presents the redesign process of FLIC, a web application developed for creating personal learning pathways in higher education, now adapted for primary and secondary education as FLIC-IPAFLEX. This redesign addresses the need to personalise learning through flexible pathways and supports teachers in designing learning situations (LS) in accordance with the criteria established by the new Education Law (LOMLOE). The SCRUM model, integrated into Design-Based Research (DBR), was employed, implementing several iterative cycles involving teachers to validate the tool's utility. The platform facilitates the creation, publication, and reuse of LS by enabling the filtering of competencies, evaluation criteria, and basic knowledge, as well as integrating with Google Classroom, an application widely used by teachers. The results show a positive user evaluation, highlighting its ease of use and capacity to foster collaboration among teachers, thereby promoting the co-design of flexible and adaptive LS. FLIC-IPAFLEX aims to contribute to the field of learning design technologies, aligning with the demands of compulsory education and supporting collaborative processes within the educational environment.

The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in host metabolism, influencing the production of small metabolites from non-digestible compounds, which can accumulate in tissues and play important role in fatty acids synthesis for improving the meat quality. We investigate the breed-specific differences in longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle fatty acid profile, gut microbiota, and metabolites across the cecum, ileum, and rectum in Chinese Songliao Black pigs (SBP) and commercial Large White × Landrace crossbred pigs (LWLDP) and interactions. Significant correlations highlighting potential microbiota-metabolite interactions that contribute to muscle fatty acid composition. LWLDP pigs exhibited a higher number of significant fatty acids and maintained higher operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the cecum and rectum, with no differences observed in the ileum between breeds. Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Spirochaetes were the predominant phyla across both breeds. Differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were more abundant in the cecum and ileum of LWLDP, while rectum showed higher expression in SBP. Integrative analysis identified significant correlations between fatty acids, metabolites, and microbial taxa. DHA was linked to cecal metabolites and rectal microbial families, while saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were associated with different microbes and metabolites. This study demonstrates distinct breed-specific interactions between gut microbiota, metabolites, and fatty acid composition, offering insights into potential microbial interventions to enhance pork quality through fatty acid modulation.

Anaerobic digestion is a feasible solution for the treatment of organic wastes. The process can reduce the amount of biowaste by stabilizing the organic material and producing biogas susceptible to energetic valorization. However, the digestate needs further valorization when land application is considered unfeasible. Thermal treatments, such as gasification, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal carbonization, are alternatives capable of transforming this material into valuable syngas, obtaining, in many cases, a carbonized stream known as biochar. The feasibility of the process depends on the energy demand for the drying stage and the treatments available for removing contaminants from the syngas, attaining high-quality products, and treating the process-derived water. In the present manuscript, these critical aspects were reviewed considering the characteristics of digestates based on their origin, the modifications of this material during anaerobic digestion, and the way digestate structure affects the final thermal valorization outcome. Emphasis was placed on the energy demand of the global approach and by-product treatments.

Mercury, a toxic heavy metal produced through both natural and anthropogenic processes, is found in all major Earth’s systems. Mercury's bioaccumulation characteristics in the human body have a significant impact on the liver, kidneys, brain, and muscles. In order to detect Hg2+ ions, a highly sensitive and specific fluorescent biosensor has been developed using a novel, modified seven amino acid peptide, FY7. The tyrosine ring in the FY7 peptide sequence forms a 2:1 complex with Hg2+ ions that are present in the water-based sample. As a result, the peptide's fluorescence emission decreases with higher concentrations of Hg2+. The FY7 peptide's performance was tested in the presence of Hg2+ ions and other metal ions, revealing its sensitivity and stability despite high concentrations. Conformational changes to the FY7 structure were confirmed by FTIR studies. Simultaneously, we designed a miniaturized setup to support an in-house-developed micro-volume capillary container for volume fluorometry measurements. We compared and verified the results from the micro-volume system with those from the commercial setup. The micro-volume capillary system accommodated only 2.9 µL of sample volume, allowing for rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of toxic mercury (II) ions ranging from 0.02 µM.

This paper presents RMSPowerSims.jl, an open-source Julia package for time-domain simulation of power systems. The package is designed to be used in conjunction with PowerModels.jl, a widely used Julia package for power system optimization. RMSPowerSims.jl provides a framework for the simulation of power systems in the time domain, allowing for the study of transient stability, fault analysis, and other dynamic phenomena. The package is designed to be intuitive and flexible, allowing users to easily define custom models for network components and disturbances. The package has been verified against DIgSILENT PowerFactory and has produced results that are in close agreement with those obtained using PowerFactory. RMSPowerSims.jl is available under an open-source license and can be downloaded from the Julia package registry.

Menstruation is a significant periodical factor in women's lives, affecting them from menarche to menopause. This study investigates the menstrual status and its impact on the performance of Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) 1st Tour players using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). The study involved 119 female KLPGA tour license professionals who participated in over 30 tournaments annually, requiring them to manage their menstrual cycles during competitions. A questionnaire collected data on demographics, menstrual cycle characteristics, and training hours. Four distinct player profiles were identified based on self-esteem, anxiety, and perceived performance. Profile 4 exhibited the highest self-esteem and perceived performance with the lowest anxiety levels, while Profile 1 showed the highest anxiety levels and lowest self-esteem. Cross-tabulation and ANOVA analyses highlighted significant differences in practice hours and athletic experience across profiles. The findings suggest that regular menstrual cycles and athletic experience are crucial in defining player profiles. These insights are valuable for coaches and professionals to develop tailored training and management strategies to enhance performance. Future research should expand the sample size and employ longitudinal methods to validate these results.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Communication Skills Scale (CSS) among Peruvian nurses and its association with job insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. We explored five models of confirmatory factor analysis for the CSS and its four subscales and assessed the convergent validity and criterion validity of the scale by analyzing its connection with job insecurity through stepwise multiple regression. We used insights from a focus group for the cultural adaptation of the scale. In the psychometric phase, 225 nurses participated through a virtual survey. The psychometric analysis revealed that the CSS and its subscales have a robust internal structure—similar to the original questionnaire—and are optimally reliable in the Peruvian population. Furthermore, the results show that job insecurity was associated with contract type, communication skills, empathy, and job satisfaction. The CSS and its subscales are valid and reliable to be applied to Peruvian nurses. Initiatives should be undertaken to strengthen communication skills and increase job satisfaction among nursing professionals by improving their working conditions, especially in times of crisis, to reduce job insecurity and promote well-being.

A large amount of sea ice exists in the polar regions, which is prone to ship-ice collisions leading to ship breakage and sinking events. Complex environmental factors pose challenges to navigation safety, and it is particularly important to perceive the polar environment and make decisions in advance. In this paper, You only look once (YOLOv5) is targeted to be optimized according to the characteristics of ice remote sensing images, which includes adding Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanism, improving spatial pyramid pooling, and replacing Flexible Rectified Linear Unit (FReLU) activation function. In order to verify the effect of the optimized algorithm, ablation experiments are set up, and the accuracy of the optimized algorithm is improved by 3.5% com-pared with the original YOLOv5. Comparison experiments with other target identification algo-rithms are conducted, and the results show that the optimized YOLOv5 has higher accuracy and better robustness, and can identify small target sea ice that is difficult to identify in large-size re-mote sensing images. Polar ship path planning based on the identification results. The identifica-tion output of remote sensing ice images is used as the input for the construction of path planning maps, and raster maps corresponding to the actual polar scenes are built. Taking the path length, the number of ship turns, and the sea ice risk value as the objective function, the Any-Angle Path Planning on Grids (Theta*) algorithm is used to simulate the path planning under different sea conditions with different sea ice concentration, and a path with a shorter length, a smoother path, and a higher safety coefficient is found.

Background/Objectives: COVID-19 led to a pandemic that has brought misery to millions of people but more so to those with pre-existing conditions. For this infection, several antiviral drugs were employed, including remdesivir (R) and paxlovid [nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (NR)]; Methods: The current study compared the effectiveness of remdesivir and paxlovid treatment for COVID-19 patients with comorbid conditions. Data from a cohort of 151 adult patients with COVID-19 who also had associated comorbidities were used in this study. These patients were treated with antivirals according to local guidelines. The subjects included 78 case-patients assigned to group R and 73 to group NR; Results: In group NR, a considerable improvement in oxygen saturation was seen in the first 24 hours of treatment (p=0.010), but the levels were significantly higher from the second day of treatment (p &lt;0.001) in group R of patients. At the end of the 5 days of treatment, the oxygen saturation improved statistically significantly compared to the admission day, but only in the R group (95.11±1.80; 91.76±1.80; p&lt;0.001); Conclusions: Both drugs can be considered a breakthrough in the current treatment approach to the COVID-19 disease since they provide readily available options that can alleviate the severity of the disease and, hence, the prognosis of patients. That is why their effectiveness relies on the correct administration time and choosing the patient with suitable characteristics regarding the presence of comorbidities and the likelihood of the critical further development of the process.

The knee joint, a crucial element in human locomotion, is subjected to various mechanical loads during daily activities and athletic pursuits. It functions as a complex, weight-bearing structure, facilitating movement and absorbing the stresses and strains imposed by physical activities. This review delves into the knee joint's response to mechanical loading, with a particular emphasis on mechanotransduction—the intricate process by which cells within the joint convert mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals. These signals initiate a cascade of cellular responses that are fundamental to maintaining joint health, promoting repair, and adapting to changes in the mechanical environment. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of mechanotransduction is essential for developing effective rehabilitation strategies aimed at treating knee joint injuries and managing degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. These strategies are crucial in clinical settings to enhance recovery, improve joint function, and mitigate pain and disability associated with knee joint disorders. This comprehensive review synthesizes current research on the cellular and molecular pathways involved in knee joint mechanotransduction. It evaluates the impact of different mechanical loading modalities—such as compression, tension, shear, and hydrostatic pressure—on the various tissues within the knee joint, including cartilage, synovium, ligaments, and tendons. By examining how these different loading conditions affect cellular behavior and tissue integrity, the review aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the biomechanical and biological responses of the knee joint to mechanical stress. Furthermore, the review discusses the implications of these findings for rehabilitation practices. It explores how knowledge of mechanotransduction can be applied to develop targeted therapeutic interventions, including controlled loading protocols, exercise regimens, manual therapy techniques, and the use of orthotic devices. By leveraging these insights, clinicians can optimize rehabilitation strategies to enhance tissue repair, restore function, and prevent further joint degeneration. Mechanotransduction in the knee joint involves several key cellular components, such as mechanoreceptors, ion channels, and signaling pathways that are activated by mechanical stimuli. These components play significant roles in regulating the functions of chondrocytes, synoviocytes, and fibroblasts—the primary cell types within the knee joint. For instance, chondrocytes, which are the main cellular component of cartilage, respond to mechanical loading by adjusting the synthesis and degradation of extracellular matrix components, thereby maintaining cartilage integrity and function. The synovial fluid, produced by synoviocytes, lubricates the joint and provides essential nutrients to the avascular cartilage. Mechanical loading affects synoviocytes, modulating the production of synovial fluid components such as hyaluronic acid and lubricin, which are critical for joint lubrication and protection against wear. Similarly, fibroblasts in ligaments and tendons respond to mechanical stress by altering collagen production and remodeling the extracellular matrix, which is vital for maintaining the strength and elasticity of these structures. This review also addresses the role of various signaling pathways, including the MAPK, NF-κB, and Wnt pathways, in mediating the cellular responses to mechanical stimuli. These pathways orchestrate the complex interactions between mechanical forces and cellular activities, influencing gene expression, protein synthesis, and cellular metabolism. By understanding these pathways, researchers and clinicians can identify potential targets for therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing mechanotransduction and promoting tissue repair. In summary, this review highlights the importance of mechanotransduction in the knee joint's response to mechanical loading and underscores its relevance in designing effective rehabilitation approaches. Through a detailed analysis of current research, it aims to bridge the gap between basic mechanobiology and clinical practice, offering a comprehensive framework for understanding and improving knee joint health. By integrating insights from mechanobiology into rehabilitation strategies, clinicians can develop more effective treatments to support knee joint recovery, enhance functional outcomes, and prevent long-term degeneration.

Tryptophan is an essential aromatic amino acid widely used in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and food industries. Microbial fermentation, mainly using Escherichia coli, has become the preferred method for its production due to sustainability and lower costs. Optimizing tryptophan production requires careful control of various fermentation parameters, including nutrients, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. Glucose, as the primary carbon source, must be fed at controlled rates to avoid metabolic overflow, which leads to byproduct accumulation and reduced production efficiency. Nitrogen sources, both organic (such as yeast extract) and inorganic (like ammonium), influence biomass growth and tryptophan yield, with ammonium levels requiring careful regulation to avoid toxic accumulation. Phosphate enhances growth but can lead to byproduct formation if used excessively. pH is another critical factor, with an optimal range between 6.5 and 7.2, where enzyme activity is maximized. Temperature control promotes growth and production, particularly between 33°C and 36°C. High DO levels increase tryptophan titers by boosting the pentose phosphate pathway and reducing byproducts like acetate. Furthermore, surfactants and supplements such as betaine monohydrate and citrate help alleviate osmotic stress and enhance precursor availability, improving production efficiency. Careful manipulation of these parameters allows for high-density cell cultures and significant tryptophan accumulation, making microbial fermentation competitive for large-scale production.

For advancing manufacturing, arising AM, with an inverse philosophical approach compared to conventional procedures, has benefits that include intricate fabrication, reduced material waste, flexible design, and more. Regardless of its potential, AM must overcome several challenges due to multi-physical processes with miscellaneous physical stimuli in diverse materials systems and situations, such as anisotropic microstructure and mechanical properties, a restricted choice of materials, defects, and high cost. Unlike conventional experimental work that requires extensive trial and error resources and FEM, which generally consumes substantial computational power, the analytical approach based on physics is an exceptional choice. Understanding the relationship between the microstructure and material properties of the fabricated parts is a crucial focus in AM research. Texture is a vital factor in almost every modern industry. This study first proposed a physics-based model to foreshadow the multi-phase crystallographic orientation distribution in Ti-6Al-4V LPBF while considering the part boundary conditions due to the importance of part geometry in real industry. The thermal distribution obtained from this function operates as the information for the single-phase crystallographic texture model. In this model, we forerun and validate the orientations of single-phase materials utilizing three Euler Angles with the principles of CET and thermodynamics, as well as the intensity of the texture by approximating them with published results. Then, we transform the single-phase texture into a dual-phase texture in Bunge calculation, illustrating visualized by pole figures of both BCC and HCP phases. This texture evolution model provides a new paradigm for future researchers to model the texture or microstructure evolution semi-analytically and save many computational resources in a real-world perspective. Others have not yet done this work about simulating the multi-phase texture in an analytical approach, so this work bridges the gap in this field. Furthermore, this paper establishes the foundation for future research on materials properties affected by microstructure or texture in academic and industrial environments. The precision and dependability of the results obtained through this method make it a valuable tool for ongoing research and advancement.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) strictly regulates the penetration of substances into the brain, which, although important for maintaining brain homeostasis, may delay drug development because of the difficulties in predicting pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PKPD), toxicokinetics/toxicodynamics (TKTD), toxicity, safety, and efficacy in the central nervous system (CNS). Moreover, BBB functional proteins show species differences; therefore, humanized in vitro BBB models are urgently needed to improve the predictability of preclinical studies. Recently, international trends in the 3Rs in animal experiments and the approval of the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 have accelerated the application of microphysiological systems (MPSs) in preclinical studies, and in vitro BBB models have become synonymous with BBB-MPSs. Recently, we developed an industrialized humanized BBB-MPS, BBB-NET. In our previous report, we reproduced transferrin receptor (TfR)-mediated transcytosis with high efficiency and robustness with hydrogels that include fibrin and collagen I microfibers (CMFs). Herein, we investigated how adding CMFs to the fibrin gel benefits BBB-NETs, showed that CMFs accelerated capillary network formation and maturation by promoting astrocyte (AC) survival, and clarified that integrin 1 is involved in the mechanism of CMFs. Our data suggest that quality control (QC) of CMFs is important for ensuring the stable production of BBB-NETs.

Introduction: microRNA-181a (miR-181a) is a crucial post-transcriptional regulator of many mRNA transcripts and ncRNAs, influencing cell proliferation, cancer cell stemness, apoptosis, and immune responses. Its abnormal expression has been characterized in numerous cancers, making it a significant genomic vulnerability and biomarker in cancer research. Areas Covered: Here, we summarize miR-181a’s correlation with poor patient outcomes across numerous cancers, and the mechanisms governing miR-181a’s activity and processing. We comprehensively describe miR-181a’s involvement in multiple regulatory cancer signaling pathways, cellular processes, and the tumor microenvironment. We also discuss current therapeutic approaches to targeting miR-181a, highlighting their limitations and future potential. Expert Opinion: miR-181a is a clinically relevant pan-cancer biomarker with potential as a therapeutic target in cancer. Its regulatory control of tumorigenic signaling pathways and immune responses positions it as a promising candidate for more personalized treatments. The success of miR-181a as a target relies on the development of specific therapeutics platforms. Future research on miR-181a's role in the tumor microenvironment and the RNA binding proteins that regulate its stability will help uncover new techniques to targeting miR-181a. Further research into miR-181a serum levels in patients undergoing therapy will help to better stratify patients and enhance therapeutic success.

Effective inventory management is vital for both organizational success and customer satisfaction. This study explores how service crew commitment impacts inventory management efficiency in Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) in Quezon City, Philippines. Utilizing a quantitative descriptive-correlation approach, data were gathered from 171 participants through purposive sampling, using a structured questionnaire to assess service crew commitment, factors influencing it, and inventory management efficiency. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including regression and correlation analyses, were employed to analyze the data. The results revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.911, p < 0.001) between service crew commitment and inventory management efficiency. Key factors influencing this commitment included training, recognition, standardized procedures, resource availability, and organizational culture. Regression analysis showed that service crew commitment (Beta = 0.659, p < 0.001) and these related factors (Beta = 0.318, p < 0.001) significantly affect inventory management efficiency. These findings underscore the need to enhance service crew commitment through comprehensive training programs, effective recognition systems, clear and standardized procedures, optimized resource allocation, and a supportive organizational culture. Such improvements are crucial for optimizing inventory management processes, reducing operational costs, and enhancing overall supply chain performance. Recommendations focus on implementing regular training sessions, establishing robust recognition programs, maintaining clear procedures, ensuring adequate resources, and fostering a positive work environment to sustain high inventory management standards.

Reliable prediction of building-level energy demand is crucial for the building managers to optimize and regulate energy consumption. Conventional prediction models omit the uncertainties associated with demand over time; hence, they are mostly inaccurate and unreliable. In this study, a Bayesian neural network (BNN)-based probabilistic prediction model is proposed to tackle this challenge. By quantifying the uncertainty, BNNs provide probabilistic predictions that capture the variations in the energy demand. The proposed model is trained and evaluated on a subset of the building operations dataset of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Berkeley, California, which includes diverse attributes related to climate and key building performance indicators. We have performed thorough hyperparameter tuning and used fixed-horizon validation to evaluate trained models on various test data to assess generalization ability. To validate the results, quantile random forest (QRF) was used as a benchmark. The study compared BNN with LSTM, showing that BNN outperformed LSTM in uncertainty quantification.

Robotic exoskeletons are being actively applied to support the activities of daily living (ADL) for patients with hand motion impairments. In terms of actuation, soft materials and sensors have opened new alternatives upon conventional rigid body structures. In this arena, biomimetic soft systems are playing an important role for modeling and controlling the human hand kinematics without the restrictions of rigid mechanical joints, while having an entire deformable body with limitless points of actuation. In this paper, we address the computational limitations for modeling large-scale articulated systems for soft robotic exoskeletons, by integrating a parallel architecture to compute the exoskeleton’s dynamics equations of motion (EoM), obtaining a computation with O(log2n) complexity for the highly-articulated n degrees of freedom.

The transport sector is heavily relying on the use of fossil fuels that are causing major environmental concerns. Solutions relying on the direct or indirect use of electricity, through e-fuels production, are emerging to power the transport sector. To ensure environmental benefits over this transition, an accurate estimation of the impact of the use of electricity is needed. This work presents a temporal analysis of carbon intensity of e-fuels using grid electricity in countries members of the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E). It also provides an estimation of the potential load factor for to produce low-carbon e-fuels according to the European Union legislative framework. This was achieved, building on top of the existing EcoDynElec tool, by developing EcoDynElec_xr a python tool enabling, with an hourly time resolution, the calculation, visualisation and the analysis of the historical time-series of electricity mix from the ENTSO-E. The results highlight that, in 2023, a minority of European countries were reaching low carbon intensity of electricity that enables the use of grid electricity for green electrolytic hydrogen production. The methodological hypothesis to consider the consumed electricity mix instead of the production mix, and the considered time step, are of paramount importance and drastically impact the potential load factor of green hydrogen production. The developed tool and calculated data are released under an open-source license to ensure transparency, results reproducibility, reuse on newer data, or for other purposes.

After prolonged development, most domestic and international oilfields have entered a late stage of high water cut and high recovery, with a comprehensive water cut reaching up to 90%. Carbon-oxygen ratio logging can directly distinguish oil layers from water layers with low salinity, unknown salinity, or significantly varying salinity in cased wells. This makes it highly valuable for detecting oil and gas layers and locating and monitoring oil-water interfaces. It is currently one of the most effective methods for determining residual oil saturation in cased wells. This paper is based on two carbon-oxygen ratio spectrum interpretation models (the fan and ratio chart methods). It compares and analyzes these two methods and optimizes the interpretation parameters in the ratio chart model using an improved genetic algorithm. The results are effectively integrated with reservoir and conventional logging interpretation results, reducing the impact of lithology and physical properties on measurement values. This provides a theoretical foundation for improving the interpretation capability and accuracy of carbon-oxygen ratio logging, allowing for quicker and more accurate identification of water-flooded layers. This technical support aids in monitoring oil-water dynamics, determining water-flooded layers, and enhancing production potential during oilfield development.

We are interested in studying alterations in the regulatory circuitry that controls mRNA stability and function, and more specifically in the interactions among miRNAs and mRNAs. We have previously reported transcriptome-wide changes in mRNA expression in an animal model of atherosclerosis (ATS) progression, and reversion upon treatment with an αCD40 specific siRNA. In this work, we have used our data on mRNAs downregulated during these processes to study length dynamics as an adaptive mechanism to thwart miRNA activity. We show that ATS progression was characterized by the lengthening of the 5’UTR and 3’UTR regions of these mRNAs. Furthermore, 3’UTR lengthening (but not that of the 5’UTR) was shown to be partially reversed by the treatment with the αCD40 specific siRNA. Study of the exonic composition of the transcriptome of these mRNAs suggested a role for alternative/cryptic/latent splicing in the generation of length variants. This was confirmed by the detection, during ATS progression, of a transcript variant switching process in which specific isoforms were replaced by others that differed in their pattern of alternative splicing, mainly at their 5’ or 3’UTRs. This work highlights alternative splicing as a mechanism contributing to the generation of 5’/3’UTR length and sequence variability during ATS progression and calls attention on factors regulating alternative splicing as possible targets of therapeutical intervention.

Circular RNA (circRNA) vaccines are emerging as a revolutionary strategy in cancer immunotherapy, offering novel mechanisms for inducing robust and durable immune responses. Unlike traditional linear mRNA vaccines, circRNAs exhibit exceptional stability, enhanced translational efficiency, and resistance to exonuclease degradation, making them ideal candidates for vaccine development. This review delves into the fundamental principles underlying circRNA biology, highlighting their unique structural advantages and translational potential. We examine recent advancements in circRNA vaccine design, focusing on their application in oncology. As the circRNA-based cancer vaccine is a relatively novel approach, accounts of all the major studies describing the efficacy have been discussed. To maximize the anti-cancer effects of circRNA vaccines, we also investigate their combination with other immunotherapeutic modalities such as immune checkpoint inhibitors and adoptive cell therapies. Large-scale manufacturing, immunogenicity optimization, delivery systems, and other challenges and future directions in the sector are also discussed. This study aims to thoroughly analyse the state-of-the-art and potential future applications of circRNA vaccines in cancer immunotherapy, highlighting them as exciting possibilities for next-generation cancer therapies.

In this paper, we present findings from a recently completed research about the use of enterprise resource planning (ERP) in travel, trade, and tourism businesses. Initially, we selected twelve existing travel, trade, and tourism ERP systems and preform practical analysis and testing of these systems via JMETER and Google chrome Lighthouse tools. In addition to that, an online survey was conducted (with an e-mail invitation and telephone call reminder) to collect data from three Pakistani Travel, Trade, and Tourism organizations. Furthermore, we adopted qualitative research practices by going through various research papers and research studies from journals, books, and internet, etc. This study is constructed on only secondary statistics. The goal of this article is to look at ERP systems in terms of their concept and use, as well as how they affect the modern travel business. An ERP system is a business system that integrates several corporate processes into a single database, such as supply chain management, manufacturing, financial management, and project management. ERP systems are utilized in a variety of businesses around the world, including in the manufacturing and service industries. Across a range of industries, service firms have recently spent significant resources on the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and quality of service operations. To assist them to build their businesses, the travel, trade, and tourist industries all rely on an integrated information network. The work focuses on only one industry i-e Travel, Trade, and Tourism. This may limit the applicability of its broad conclusions to other industries or industries. The findings of this study compare and contrast the ERP implementation challenges faced by existing organizations of travel, trade, and tourism companies. This is the first empirical study on the difficulties surrounding ERP installation in travel, trade, and tourism companies. It is also the first study to compare ERP adoption in multiple companies in the areas of travel, trade, and tourism.

Background/Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between swallowing function and serum albumin levels in Japanese older people (age ≥ 75 years). Methods: A total of 3258 participants (1325 males, 1933 females; mean age, 80.8 years) who had a dental checkup in Gifu City, Japan, between April 2020 and March 2021 were recruited. Swallowing function was assessed using the repetitive saliva swallow test, with poor swallowing function defined as swallowing fewer than three times in 30 seconds. A serum albumin level &lt; 3.6 G/dL was considered low. Results: In total, 78 participants (2%) had a low serum albumin level. These participants were significantly more likely to be older (p &lt; 0.001), male (p = 0.030), to have circulatory disease (p &lt; 0.001), support/care-need certification (p &lt; 0.001), poor tongue and lip function (p &lt; 0.001), poor swallowing function (p &lt; 0.001), and number of present teeth ≥ 20 teeth (p = 0.001). Furthermore, after adjusting for age, gender, circulatory disease, support/care-need certification, number of present teeth, tongue and lip function, and swallowing function, a low serum albumin level was positively associated with older (odds ratio [OR]: 1.115; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.064–1.169), male (OR: 2.208; 95% CI: 1.360–3.584), circulatory disease (OR: 1.829; 95% CI: 1.079–3.099), support/care-need certification (OR: 2.087; 95% CI: 1.208–3.606), and poor swallowing function (OR: 2.379; CI: 1.377–4.112). Conclusions: These results suggest a positive relationship between poor swallowing function and low serum albumin levels in Japanese older people.

This study investigated the toxigenic genes and antimicrobial resistance profiles Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from 260 raw milk samples collected from dairy farms in Türkiye. Results indicated that 60.7% of staphylococcal enterotoxin genes (sea, seb, sed, seg, sei, sej, sek, seq, sem, seo, and seu) and 21.4% of the tst and eta genes were positive, with most enterotoxin-positive samples carrying more than one gene. The genes sec, see, seh, sel, sen, sep, and etb were not identified in any samples. The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (mecA, blaR, blaI, blaZ, vanA, ermT, tetK, aac/aph, ant, dfrA, tcaR, IS256, and IS257) was high at 89.2%, with bla being the most frequently detected gene (75%). The mecA gene was present in 14.2% of samples, while tcaR was detected in 78.5%. Nevertheless, the mecC was not identified. Disinfectant resistance genes (qacA/B, qacC, qacJ, smr) were detected in 21.4% of the samples. The results of the disc diffusion test showed that 64% of strains were resistant to penicillin G and ampicillin, with additional resistance found for cefoxitin, teicoplanin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, and other antibiotics. These findings highlight a significant public health and food safety risk associated with raw milk due to the presence of S. aureus strains with toxigenic genes and high antimicrobial resistance.

To explore cast HEAs reinforcement by MC carbides three equimolar CoNiFeCrC alloys without or with Carbon and either hafnium or tantalum were investigated. Their microstructures were specified and tests at 1100°C in oxidation by air and flexural creep tests were carried out. The HEAbase was single–phased. The HEAhfc and HEAtac contained eutectic script HfC and TaC carbides respectively, in the interdendritic spaces. After oxidation for 50h at 1100°C all alloys were covered by a (Cr,Mn)2O3 scale with various proportions in Cr and Mn. HfO2 or CrTaO4 also formed. The subsurface was depleted in Cr and especially in Mn. The HEAbase alloy deformed quickly. The MC carbides greatly improved the creep resistance, and divided deformation by five to ten times.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to compare croup management patterns between pediatricians and emergency medicine (EM) physicians to enhance pediatric emergency care and inform the training of future specialists. Methods: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted for 1,676 children diagnosed with croup who visited a single pediatric emergency department (PED) from March 2019 to February 2023. Patient characteristics, management patterns, and the impact of physician specialty on emergency care were analyzed. Results: EM physicians used injected dexamethasone monotherapy more frequently, whereas pediatricians favored combined use of nebulized epinephrine and dexamethasone. Pediatricians also prescribed oral antibiotics and corticosteroids at discharge more often. The appropriate use of nebulized epinephrine based on the Westley Croup Score was significantly higher in the EM physician group. Despite these differences, there were no significant disparities in PED length of stay or revisit rates within 48 hours. Conclusions: EM physicians adhered more closely to clinical guidelines for croup management. These findings underscore the need for standardized, evidence-based pediatric emergency care and provide valuable insights for training programs in this field.

Phase errors in magnetic resonance (MR) techniques, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), pose significant challenges to data accuracy and interpretation. As MR technologies advance, the demand for more sophisticated phase correction methods continues to grow, enhancing diagnostic precision and analytical outcomes. This review explores the evolution of phase correction models, beginning with simple global phase shifts, progressing through traditional linear statistical models, and culminating in modern machine learning techniques—specifically, neural networks. We also examine a range of optimization functions and optimizers, including both MR data-specific and common statistical approaches, applied in phase error correction. Despite notable progress, challenges remain in developing fully automatic phase error correction methods, particularly given the absence of ground truth in real-world MR data. This review highlights key methods, discusses their limitations, and proposes future pathways, including ensemble learning, that could guide further innovation in phase error correction.

Light pollution of the night sky is a phenomenon increasingly observed around the world and reported in the form of thematic maps. The major contributor to light pollution is ill-adjusted or inappropriately designed artificial lighting by outdoor light sources. The phenomenon occurs mainly over urban areas, but affects both the urban environment and the areas adjacent to it. The problem of excessive artificial light emission at night and the negative effects it causes has already become so serious and global in its impact that effective and comprehensible methods of cartographic presentation of this phenomenon have been explored. The literature on the subject provides examples of how to present the results of measurements of light pollution of the night sky, but these have been developed using different colour scales, often in discretionary ranges and units of measurement. This paper presents an overview of the measurement scales and units found in the literature to describe the phenomenon of light pollution that obscures the night sky. A proposal of the author’s color scale for the presentation of the phenomenon was proposed and shown by example. The differences between measurement scales and how they affect interpretation of results are discussed. Furthermore, a recommendation is made for a standardised method of cartographic visualisation of the spatial distribution and presentation of light smog measurement results.

The increasing global demand for biodiesel is due to the urgent need to replace mineral diesel with a fuel based on renewable energy sources. In this scenario, biocatalysis stands out as an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical catalysis. When associated with the use of immobilized enzymes, which allow their reuse in the process of obtaining biofuel, this approach makes production sustainable and reduces costs. In this sense, we investigated the use of the lipase produced by an Amazonian endophytic fungus in immobilized form as a biocatalyst in the transesterification of waste cooking oil for biodiesel production. The fungus Endomelanconiopsis endophytica QAT_7AC demonstrated high production of lipase. The lipolytic extract was precipitated in ethanol, which increased the specific enzyme activity by 28%. The lipolytic extract and the precipitated lipolytic extract were immobilized in calcium alginate beads. Immobilization efficiency was over 89%. The immobilized biocatalysts showed thermal stability (30-50 °C) and were used in the production of biodiesel using waste cooking oil and ethanol. It was possible to reuse them for up to four reaction cycles, with yields greater than 70%. These results prove the efficiency of immobilized biocatalysts in the production of ethyl esters from waste oils.

Glycogen, a branched polysaccharide organized into glycogen granules (GGs), is delivered from the cytoplasm to the lysosomes of hepatocytes by the STBD1-driven selective autophagy (glycophagy). Recently, we developed Komagataella phaffii yeast as a simple model of GG autophagy and found that it proceeds non-selectively under nitrogen starvation conditions. However, another group, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model, found that glycogen is a non-preferred cargo of the nitrogen-starvation induced bulk autophagy. To clarify cargo characteristics of K. phaffii GGs, we used the same glycogen synthase-based reporter (Gsy1-GFP) of GG autophagy in K. phaffii, as was used in S. cerevisiae. The K. phaffii Gsy1-GFP marked GGs and reported on their autophagic degradation during nitrogen starvation, as expected. However, unlike in S. cerevisiae, glycogen synthase-marked GGs were delivered to the vacuole and degraded there with the same efficiency as a cytosolic glycogen synthase in glycogen-deficient cells suggesting that glycogen is a neutral cargo of bulk autophagy in K. phaffii. We verified our findings with a new set of reporters based on the glycogen-binding CBM20 domain of human STBD1. The GFP-CBM20 and mCherry-CBM20 fusion proteins tagged GGs, reported about autophagy of GGs and confirmed that GGs in K. phaffii are neither preferred, nor non-preferred substrates of bulk autophagy. They are its neutral substrates.

This case represents the association between the presence of large fibroid tumor and pulmonary embolism in 47-year-old women. We highlight the diagnostic investigations and treatment methods for PE, followed by further evaluation of the underlying explanation of this pathology and eliminating other related risk factors.

The connection between a prefabricated reinforced concrete column and a pocket foundation is a case treated from a general perspective in the European Standard named EN 1992-1-1, and when the structural engineer deals with the dimensioning or verification of the connection, he tackles several unknowns. The present work aims to fill in the missing information by presenting detailed calculation models based on the strut-and-tie method for 4 of the widely used pocket foundations: pedestal pocket foundation with smooth, rough or keyed internal walls, and pad foundation with pocket possessing keyed internal walls. Additionally, detailed design prescriptions applicable to seismic areas are given. Afterwards, as a case study, a pocket foundation is designed in all 4 variations, having the structural design particularities, similitudes and differences pointed out. Finally, to conclude the advantages and disadvantages are mentioned for pocket foundations in respect to the type of internal wall surface used. Quantifiable data based on the case study undertaken is available.

The encapsulation of bacteria in emulsion droplets offer various advantages over other conventional methods of encapsulation such as improvement in bacterial viability and may served as microenvironments for bacterial growth. Nevertheless, changes in temperature may affect bacterial viability and droplet stability. In this study, the encapsulation of bacteria in single water-in-oil (W/O) and double water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) emulsions was investigated under cold storage with a study on temperature-modulated release. The microencapsulation of bacteria in emulsion droplets was achieved by using a flow-focusing microfluidic device. Droplets stability was determined by measuring changes in droplets size and creaming behaviour at different temperatures. Thermal properties of the samples were determined by using differential scanning calorimetry while the release of bacteria with change in temperature was determined by measuring colony form unit (CFU) of the released bacteria and fluorescence microscopy. Higher bacterial viability was observed for encapsulated samples as compared to free cells indicating the ability of emulsion system in improving the bacterial viability during cold temperature storage. Crystallization temperature was lowered in the presence of bacteria, but the melting temperature was similar with or without bacteria. Storage in freezing temperatures of -20°C and -80°C leads to an extensive droplet destabilization with immediate release of encapsulated bacteria upon thawing in which temperature modulated release of encapsulated bacteria was achieved. This study provides an overview of the potential application of emulsion droplets for encapsulation and controlled release that is beneficial for various applications such as food and pharmaceuticals.

Anaerobic digestion has the potential to convert organic waste materials into valuable energy. At the same time, using press water from biomass materials for energy generation, while taking advantage of the resulting cake for other purposes is an emerging approach. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the residual potential expected from a typical biogas feedstock in the West African context after it has been mechanically separated into liquid and solid phases. Hence, in this study, the rumen contents of ruminants (cow, goat and sheep) and their proportionate ratios were obtained from an abattoir in Ghana. Resource characterisation of the waste samples were carried out in the Central laboratory of the HFR, Germany. Anaerobic batch tests for biogas (biomethane) yield determination were set-up using the Hohenheim Biogas Yield Test (HBT). Inoculum used was obtained from an inoculum production unit at the Hohenheim University biogas laboratory. The trial involved two different forms of the sample: mixture of rumen contents, press water, and inoculum, each in four (4) replicates. The trial was carried out at a mesophilic temperature of 37°C. Results obtained over a seventy (70) day period were transformed into biogas yields. Overall, the results show that the current contents are suitable for biogas generation as an option, as opposed to the current form of disposal at a refuse dump. However, using these mixtures in their original forms is more technically viable than using press water without further treatment.

Background/Objectives: Actual urate-lowering therapies may cause serious side effects in patients. Thus, alternative treatments are needed to regulate uric acid (UA) levels in patients with hyperuricemia associated with kidney injury, and natural sources have demonstrated utility in this field. For the first time, our study evaluated the effects of an extract of Dactylopius opuntiae insects on hyperuricemia related to renal dysfunction in vitro and in mice. Methods: Insects were bred and collected, and two different extracts (D1 and D2) were obtained. For both extracts, xanthine oxidase (XO) and radical inhibitory assays were performed. Subsequently, serum purine levels and renal markers were quantified in male BALB/c mice who received potassium oxonate, hypoxanthine, and gentamicin. Results: The D2 extract contained 18,037.7 µg of carminic acid/mL, inhibited 53.2% of XO activity at one concentration, and showed IC50 values of 18,207.8 and 5729.6 µg/mL against ABTS and DPPH radicals. D2 administration reduced serum UA and creatinine levels, and it avoided the increased kidney weight and reduced renal antioxidant capacity caused by hyperuricemia and allopurinol use in mice. Despite the satisfactory results obtained in vitro, the D1 extract killed the animal models due to its citric acid content. Conclusions: The D2 insect extract can be used as an effective therapy for hyperuricemia associated with kidney dysfunction.

This paper focuses on the long-standing issue of galactic rotation, i.e. the discrepancy between observed rotation rates and predictions based on Newtonian gravity. While Newton's law holds within the solar system, it fails to explain the higher-than-expected rotation speeds of galaxies, particularly at greater distances from their centers. This study finds that Newton's gravitational formula applies only when gravitational lensing has a negligible impact. We examine the gravitational force on objects farther from the galactic center, where the lensing effect of a supermassive black hole becomes significant. This lensing causes the actual gravitational force to exceed Newtonian predictions, with the discrepancy increasing with distance. This effect offers an alternative explanation for the galactic rotation curve without the need for dark matter. Our findings suggest that Newton's formula requires revision to account for gravitational lensing, a key factor in understanding galactic dynamics and its broader cosmic implications.

This study investigated whether quantitative MRI and histology of the prostate reveals differences between races that can affect diagnosis. Cancer signal enhancement rate (α) on DCE-MRI was significantly higher for African Americans (AA) compared to Caucasian Americans (CA). Signal washout rate (β) was significantly lower in benign tissue in AAs and significantly elevated in cancers in AAs. However, no significant differences were found for ADC and T2. ROC analysis showed that ADC and T2 are slightly less effective in AA compared to CA. DCE significantly improves the differentiation of PCa from benign in AAs (α: 52%, β: 62% more effective in AA compared to CA). Histologic analysis showed cancers have a greater proportion of epithelium and lower lumen in AA compared to CA. This study shows that the different races have different quantitative MRI values and histologic makeup. Quantitative DCE-MRI is highly effective and improves PCa diagnosis in African Americans.

Enhancing the acoustical quality in learning environments is mandatory, especially for Hearing Aids (HAs) users. When in-field evaluations cannot be performed, Virtual Reality (VR) can be adopted for the acoustical quality assessment of existing and new buildings, contributing to the acquisition of subjective impressions in lab settings. To ensure an accurate spatial reproduction of the sound field in VR also for HAs users, multispeaker-based systems can be employed to auralize a given environment. However, most systems are effortful due to costs, size and construction. This work deals with the validation of a VR-system based on a 16-speaker-array synced with a VR-headset, arranged to be easily replicated in small non-anechoic spaces and suitable for HAs users. Both objective and subjective validations are performed against a real university lecture room of 800 m3 and with 2.3 s of Reverberation Time at mid-frequencies. Comparisons of binaural and monoaural room acoustic parameters are performed between measurements in the real lecture room and its lab reproduction. To validate the AudioVisual experience, 32 normal-hearing subjects were administered the Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ) on the overall sense of perceived presence. The outcomes confirm that the system is a promising and feasible tool to predict the perceived room acoustical quality.

Specific strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus can cause acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), a critical issue in shrimp aquaculture despite the application of several control strate-gies. The use of antibiotics is now restricted due to increasing bacterial resistance and overuse. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have shown potential in shrimp aquaculture, with applications in boosting immunity against certain types of pathogens, promoting growth, and improving sur-vival rates. However, an economically viable solution that protect the organisms has not been found, which is why the search for nanoparticles synthesized with plant extracts is necessary to generate environmentally friendly control strategies. In this study, we synthesized AgNPs from Larrea tridentata extract and administered them orally with feed over a 35-day period. Shrimps fed with AgNPs-enriched diets showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in mRNA expression of immune-related genes (CTL-5, MNK, SR, and GILT), particularly within the first 24–48 hours. No significant differences were observed in growth rates, but survival rates in a challenge against V. parahaemolyticus exceeded 85%, higher than the control group. Based on our findings and previ-ous literature, L. tridentata can effectively promote the synthesis of AgNPs and shows potential as an antimicrobial agent, without affecting the growth or survival of treated shrimp.

Cannabis sativa is known for producing over 120 distinct phytocannabinoids, with Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) being the most prominent, primarily in their acidic forms. Beyond Δ9-THC and CBD, a wide array of lesser-known phytocannabinoids, along with terpenes, flavonoids, and alkaloids, demonstrate diverse pharmacological activities, interacting with the endocannabinoid system (eCB) and other biological pathways. These com-pounds, characterized by phenolic structures and hydroxyl groups, possess lipophilic properties, allowing them to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) effectively. Notably, their antioxidant, an-ti-inflammatory, and neuro-modulatory effects position them as promising agents in treating neu-rodegenerative disorders. While research has extensively examined the neuropsychiatric and neuroprotective effects of Δ9-THC, other minor phytocannabinoids remain underexplored. Given the well-established neuroprotective potential of CBD, there is growing interest in the therapeutic benefits of non-psychotropic minor phytocannabinoids (NMPs) in brain disorders. This review highlights the emerging research on these lesser-known compounds and their neuroprotective potential. It offers insights into their therapeutic applications across various major neurological conditions.

Objective: The study aims to evaluate the correlation between 68Ga-PSMA uptake in PSMA PET/CT in primary prostate cancer (PC) and its histopathological grading (Gleason Score and ISUP grade). Additionally, we compared preoperative biopsy histopathological findings with definitive pathology results in radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 86 patients who underwent 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT for primary PC staging, of which 40 patients later underwent radical prostatectomy. PET/CT results, including SUVmax values, were correlated with GS and PSA concentrations. Histopathology reports were analyzed and compared between biopsy and final pathology results following RP. Results: A significant positive correlation was observed between SUVmax and ISUP grades (Pearson's ρ = 0.34, p < 0.001), with higher SUVmax values associated with more advanced grades. A cut-off SUVmax value of 5.64 was determined to predict upstaging in patients, yielding a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 60% (AUC = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70–0.94). Additionally, 57.5% of patients experienced a grade shift following RP, with a 35% upgrade and 22.5% downgrade in ISUP grades. Conclusion: 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT demonstrated high sensitivity in detecting high-risk prostate cancer, particularly in patients with GS > 7 or PSA levels ≥ 10 ng/ml. The findings suggest that this imaging modality may be less effective for staging of patients with lower GS or PSA values, that is low-risk PCa. Further prospective studies are necessary to validate these results.

Climate change is significantly reshaping global and regional climates, with profound impacts on local microclimates and agricultural productivity. This study investigates the effects of climate change on regional microclimates and examines how these shifts influence agricultural output, focusing on case studies from vulnerable regions. Utilizing secondary climate data from international agencies, this research applies statistical techniques, including time series analysis, correlation analysis, and extreme value theory, to assess changes in temperature, precipitation, and other environmental factors. The study employs spatial analysis to explore the geographic variability in these effects, and regression models to quantify the relationship between climatic changes and crop yields. Preliminary results indicate a marked shift in microclimate patterns, with significant consequences for farming practices, particularly in regions reliant on climate-sensitive crops. The findings underscore the need for adaptive strategies in agricultural sectors to mitigate the risks posed by climate change. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and farmers, emphasizing the importance of localized climate data in developing sustainable agricultural frameworks.

In the dynamic landscape of online shopping, predicting user behaviors such as clicks, cart additions, and orders is crucial for optimizing sales strategies. Traditional recommendation systems often focus on a single objective, limiting their effectiveness in a multifaceted e-commerce environment. This article proposes a multi-objective recommendation system that leverages previous events in user sessions to forecast these key metrics, addressing challenges such as imbalanced positive and negative samples, varying session lengths, and the need for effective sampling techniques. Our approach integrates LightGBM, XgBoost, and Recbole GRU4Rec through ensemble learning, combining the strengths of these models to enhance prediction performance. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our model outperforms existing methods, offering significant improvements in accuracy and robustness. This work provides a comprehensive solution for online retailers to better predict user behaviors and optimize their sales strategies, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction and business outcomes.

Retinal diseases are an important focus of in vivo gene therapy, for which adeno-associated virus is a preferred vector. Intravitreal injection is a highly desirable delivery route because it is much simpler, safer and inexpensive than the main alternative subretinal injection. However, existing capsids have low efficiency, require high doses and are susceptible to neutralization by antibodies that are present in the vitreous. Using AAV5 as starting material, we applied a combination of directed evolution and rational design to develop PT1, a novel AAV capsid capable of efficiently transducing the retina after intravitreal injection. The most striking property of PT1 is its remarkable ability to evade preexisting neutralizing antibodies, thanks to its multiple mutations spread over large areas of the capsid surface, disrupting several epitopes. Our results suggest that PT1 has a strong potential as a useful candidate capsid for human retinal gene therapy.

Understanding the relationship between urban fabrics and sustainability is critical for addressing contemporary urban challenges. Urban fabrics contain information that reveals the performance and spatial heterogeneity of urban systems. This study evaluates the variability and spatial patterns of sustainability indicators across different urban fabric typologies in Cuenca, Ecuador. Using a 150-radius hexagonal grid covering the study area, 30 sustainability indicators are assessed in this study, exploring their spatial patterns and relationships with urban fabrics trough spatial and statistical analyses and visualization techniques. Results reveal significant variability among urban fabrics, with built environment indicators playing a dominant role in overall sustainability. There is evidence of marked spatial heterogeneity, with inner-core areas showing higher sustainability, while fringe expansion areas lag, and transitional areas also identified. Spatial clusters of high or low sustainability fabrics tend to be homogeneous, whereas mid-range sustainability fabrics exhibit greater heterogeneity. This quantitative evidence highlights hidden patterns in urban morphology and sustainability, offering valuable insights to support and enhance evidence-based urban planning. The open-source data and tools reported are developed to allow for customisation as well as replication in other urban areas.

A large number of magnetic sensors, like superconducting quantum interference devices, optical pumping and nitrogen vacancy magnetometers, were shown to satisfy the energy resolution limit. This limit states that the magnetic sensitivity of the sensor, when translated into a product of energy with time, is bounded below by Planck’s constant, ħ. This bound implies a fundamental limitation as to what can be achieved in magnetic sensing. Here we explore biological magnetometers, in particular three magnetoreception mechanisms thought to underly animals’ geomagnetic field sensing: the radical-pair, the magnetite and the MagR mechanism. We address the question of how close these mechanisms approach the energy resolution limit. At the quantitative level, the utility of the energy resolution limit is that it informs the workings of magnetic sensing in model-independent ways, and thus can provide subtle consistency checks for theoretical models and estimated or measured parameter values, particularly needed in complex biological systems. At the qualitative level, the closer the energy resolution is to ħ, the more “quantum” is the sensor. This offers an alternative route towards understanding the quantum biology of magnetoreception. It also quantifies the room for improvement, illuminating what Nature has achieved, and stimulating the engineering of biomimetic sensors exceeding Nature’s magnetic sensing performance.

This research seeks to provide local governments with a comprehensive alternative for the proper maintenance of roads, focusing on the surface and functional evaluation of pavements. It com-pares conventional methods of the International Roughness Index (IRI) and the Pavement Condi-tion Index (PCI) with novel methodologies that employ smart technologies. Road maintenance is essential for economic development, facilitating the circulation of services and resources. This re-search analyzes the efficiency of smart technologies in the maintenance of local roads in Arequipa, taking as a case study a 2 km section of the AR-780 highway in Polobaya. The International Roughness Indices (IRI) obtained through the Merlin Roughness Meter and the Roadroid applica-tion were compared, finding a minimum variation of 4.007% in the left lane and 8.5% in the right lane. Roadroid turned out to be 60 times faster than the conventional method, with a cost differ-ence of 220.11 soles. Both methods classified the road condition (PSI) as GOOD, validating the accuracy of Roadroid. In addition, the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) was evaluated with con-ventional methods and a DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone, finding a variation of 6.89%. The cost difference between the methodologies was 1,047.73 soles, and the use of the drone proved to be 10 times faster than visual inspection. Finally, it can be said that this study contributes to closing the knowledge gap regarding the use of smart technologies for better pavement management on local roads, so that the actors in charge of the roads can make decisions based on science and thus con-tribute to the well-being of the population.

In the DC distribution networks, DC bus voltage is maintained by the grid-connected converter, the controllability and reliability of the grid-connected converter significantly affects the bus voltage characteristic. To address the problem of limited stability and frequent oscillations, this paper proposes a state feedback control method for the AC/DC converter. Conventional AC/DC converter adopts the voltage-current double-closed-loop control structure with the proportional integral (PI) controllers, which is the equivalent of the typical type II control system, but the typical type II control system cannot fully settle the stability and immunity problems. In contrast, the state feedback control strategy not only achieves the control objectives of the traditional double-closed-loop control, but also reduce the AC/DC converter system model to a typical I-type system, which improves the stability, thus enhances the oscillation suppression capability of the bus voltage. By selecting multiple state variables and designing the converter pole configuration range, the proposed single-loop state feedback control method manages to optimize both the dynamic and steady-state performances of the grid-connected AC/DC converter. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed single-loop state feedback control strategy has been verified by both the simulation and experiment results.

Interactive conversational agents, also known as chatbots, have the potential to increase the success rate of digital technology interventions to promote healthy behaviors. However, due to their newness and limited use, little is known about their integration, usefulness, and effectiveness in promoting smoking and vaping cessation. The aim of this mixed methods systematic review was to assess the effectiveness and characteristics of current interactive conversational agents in promoting and supporting smoking and vaping cessation. A mixed methods systematic review was conducted to identify studies published in the last 20 years in five relevant databases. Eight studies, including seven on smoking cessation and one on smoking and vaping cessation, were included. The results showed that, compared to other smoking cessation methods, chatbots can lead to better engagement in treatment, resulting in higher rates of sustained abstinence and improved quality of life. In addition, chatbots can be perceived as empathetic and establish a decent therapeutic alliance thanks to their communication skills. This knowledge could be useful for the development of interactive conversational agents to support smoking and/or vaping cessation. Alternative intervention tools targeting younger generations, such as chatbots, may offer an additional way for public health professionals to reach them.

Assessing handling qualities is crucial for ensuring the safety and operational efficiency of aircraft control characteristics. The growing interest in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) has increased the focus on electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft; however, a comprehensive assessment of eVTOL handling qualities remains a challenge. This paper proposed a handling qualities framework to assess eVTOL handling qualities, integrating pilot compensation, task performance, and qualitative comments. An experiment was conducted, where eye-tracking data and subjective ratings from 23 participants as they performed various Mission Task Elements (MTEs) in an eVTOL simulator were recorded. The relationship between pilot compensation and task workload was investigated based on eye metrics. Data mining results revealed that pilots' eye movement patterns and workload perception change when performing Mission Task Elements (MTEs) that involve aircraft deficiencies. Additionally, pupil size, pupil diameter, iris diameter, interpupillary distance, iris-to-pupil ratio, and gaze entropy are found to be correlated with both handling qualities and task workload. Furthermore, a handling qualities and pilot workload recognition model is developed based on Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM), which is subsequently trained and evaluated with experimental data, achieving an accuracy of 97%. A case study was conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Overall, the proposed framework addresses the limitations of the existing Handling Qualities Rating Method (HQRM), offering a more comprehensive approach to handling qualities assessment.

Explainable AI (XAI) has emerged as a pivotal tool in healthcare diagnostics, offering much-needed transparency and interpretability in complex AI models. XAI techniques, such as SHAP, Grad-CAM, and LIME, enable clinicians to understand AI-driven decisions, fostering greater trust and collaboration between human and machine in clinical settings. This review explores the key benefits of XAI in enhancing diagnostic accuracy, personalizing patient care, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. However, despite its advantages, XAI faces significant challenges, including balancing model accuracy with interpretability, scaling for real-time clinical use, and mitigating biases inherent in medical data. Ethical concerns, particularly surrounding fairness and accountability, are also discussed in relation to AI's growing role in healthcare. The review emphasizes the importance of developing hybrid models that combine high accuracy with improved interpretability and suggests that future research should focus on explainable-by-design systems, reducing computational costs, and addressing ethical issues. As AI continues to integrate into healthcare, XAI will play an essential role in ensuring that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and aligned with the ethical standards required in clinical practice.

Anaerobic digestion followed by microalgal cultivation is considered a promising renewable alternative for the production of biomethane with reduced effluent generation, thus lowering the environmental impact. In this arrangement, in addition to generating energy, the microalgae act by potentiating the refinement of the effluents generated via anaerobic digestion (digestates). In this study, the microalga Tetradesmus obliquus was cultivated in photobioreactors with the final digestate resulting from the codigestion of Arundo donax L. plant biomass and cattle wastewater. The biotechnological route used was efficient, and biogas production ranged from 50.20 to 94.69 mL gVS-1. The first-order kinetic model with variable dependence (FOMT) provided the best fit for the biogas production data. In the microalgal posttreatment, the removal values ranged from 81.5 to 93.8% for chemical oxygen demand, 92.0 to 95.3% for N-NH4+, and 41.7 to 83.3% for PO43- after 26 days. The macromolecular composition of the algal biomass reached lipid contents ranging from 33.4 to 42.7%. Thus, the proposed process mediated by microalgae can be considered promising for the bioremediation and recovery of effluents produced by agriculture through the use of microalgal biomass for bioproduct production.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a multifariousness syndrome, account-ing for over half of heart failure (HF) patients receiving clinical treatment. The prevalence of HFpEF is rapidly increasing in the coming decades as the global population ages. It is becoming clearer that HFpEF has a lot of different causes, which makes it challenging to find effective treatments. Currently, there are no proven treatments for people with deteriorating HF, or HFpEF. Although the pathophysiologic foundations of HFpEF are complex, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and increased oxidative stress caused by mitochondrial dys-function seem to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of HFpEF. Emerging evidence from an-imal models and human myocardial tissues from failed hearts shows that mitochondrial aberra-tions cause a marked increase in mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) production and oxidative stress. Furthermore, studies have reported that common HF medications like beta blockers, angioten-sin receptor blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists indirectly reduce the production of mtROS. Despite the harmful effects of ROS on cardiac remodelling, maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and cardiac functions requires small amounts of ROS. In this review, we will provide an overview and discussion of recent findings on mtROS production, its threshold for imbalance, and the subsequent dysfunction that leads to related cardiac and systemic phenotypes in the context of HFpEF. We will also focus on newly discovered cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying ROS dysregulation, current therapeutic options, and future perspectives for treating HFpEF by targeting mtROS and associ-ated signal molecules.

The number zero is happily used by mathematics, but not physics for various reasons. It should be incorrect to say that $\phi(x)= 0=\gamma(x)$, when there are two, different, physical meanings, such as fields for two very different kinds of particles, etc. That could lead to some kind of confusion in physics. In that case, it could even be necessary to {\bf reject} using the zero number in certain expressions, and instead, at least try to `go around them'. Do not forget that the number zero was {\it banned} for 1,500 years, long, long ago!

The plantar plate (PP) tear of the second metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is the most common reason for forefoot pain in clinical practice. PP is the main stabilizing structure of the joint and, together with collateral ligaments, is the key to maintaining the stability of MTPJ. Many surgical procedures have been described to repair PP tears. Currently, there is still controversy regarding which is the surgical superior option (direct versus indirect PP repair techniques). Transfer of the flexor digitorum longus tendon to the dorsum of the proximal phalanx is one of the surgical techniques described to treat PP tears associated with MTPJ instability. We present two cases that developed instability of the second MTPJ secondary to chronic PP tear with symptoms resolved after transfer of the flexor digitorum longus (FDL). Currently, the literature review shows that the procedure seems to be the most consistent surgical option in chronic cases of PP tears.

The Supportive and Palliative Indicators Tool (SPICT) was developed for timely identifying patients who may benefit from supportive and palliative care for a better treatment review, care plan discussion, and end-of-life care. Although the SPICT has been validated in different languages and patients living in different settings, it has not been validated in patients receiving home-based medical care (HBMC), or in the context of using traditional Chinese characters. The present study aimed to validate the Taiwan version of SPICT (SPICT-TW) and to measure its ability to predict six-month mortality in patients who received HBMC in Taiwan. Seven HBMC agents (five clinics and two hospitals) participated in this validation study. We recruited 129 patients aged ≥50 years who had been consistently receiving HBMC for &gt; two months. The results revealed that the SPICT-TW demonstrated similar reliability and validity compared to other language versions of SPICT. It may be an appropriate tool for healthcare professionals to timely detect the needs of palliative care in older people who received home healthcare. Furthermore, we found that a combination of four general indicators and one clinical indicator in SPCIT-TW has the best prediction ability at predicting six-month mortality in these HMBC recipients. This multicenter study validated the SPICT-TW among HBMC recipients in Taiwan. SPICT-TW demonstrated high reliability and validity and may be a practical tool for identifying older people at risk of dying within six months who would benefit from palliative care.

1) Background: Impeded resolution of inflammation contributes substantially to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD); consequently, resolving inflammation is pivotal to the amelioration of AD pathology. This can potentially be achieved by the treatment with specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs), which should resolve neuroinflammation in brains. 2) Methods: Here, we report the effects of long-term treatment with a SPM, maresin like 1 (MarL1), on AD pathogenesis in a transgenic 5xFAD mouse model. 3) Results: MarL1 treatment reduced Aβ overload, curbed the loss of neurons in brains especially cholinergic neurons associated with cleaved-caspase-3-associated apoptotic degeneration, reduced microgliosis and the pro-inflammatory M1 polarization of microglia, curbed the AD-associated decline in anti-inflammatory Iba1⁺Arg-1⁺-M2 microglia, inhibited phenotypic switching to pro-inflammatory N1 neutrophils, promoted the blood–brain-barrier-associated tight-junction protein claudin-5 and decreased neutrophil leakage in 5xFAD brains, and induced the switch of neutrophils toward the inflammation-resolving N2 phenotype. 4) Conclusion: Long-term administration of MarL1 mitigates AD-related neuropathogenesis in brains by curbing neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. These findings provided the preclinical leads and mechanistic insights for the development of MarL1 into an effective modality to ameliorate AD pathogenesis.

The study was conducted in the milking parlor of a cattle farm with a capacity of 400 cows of the Holstein-Friesian breed. The milking installation was a double 8 "Herringbone" type without windows, and the roof was constructed of glass. The reporting of temperature, air humidity and temperature-humidity index (THI) was performed three times during each milking (at the start, in the middle and at the end of milking) with measurements repeated during the morning, noon and evening milking. The highest mean and maximum daytime air temperature values were recorded in summer and spring. Although the average values for the spring season were lower than those for summer (by about 4 ⁰ C), the maximum values reached were equally high – 31.4 ⁰ C. In terms of relative air humidity, the highest mean values were reported for the winter sea-son – 82.39%. For the other seasons, the relative humidity values were on average high and close in value - from 62.51 to 67.46%. In THI, the highest average daily and maximum values were re-ported in the summer months - 73.41 and 80, respectively.

The emergence and re-emergence of pathogens with pandemic potential has been a persistent issue throughout history. Recent decades have seen significant outbreaks of zoonotic viruses from members of the Coronaviridae, Filoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Flaviviridae, and Togaviridae families, resulting in widespread infections. The continual emergence of zoonotic viral pathogens and associated infections highlights the need for prevention strategies and effective treatments. Central to this effort is the availability of suitable animal models, which are essential for understanding pathogenesis and assessment of transmission dynamics. These animals are also critical for evaluating the safety and efficacy of novel vaccines or therapeutics and are essential in facilitating regulatory approval of new products. Rapid development of animal models is an integral aspect of pandemic response and preparedness; however, their establishment is fraught by several rate-limiting steps, including selection of a suitable species, the logistical challenges associated with sharing and disseminating transgenic animals (e.g., the time-intensive nature of breeding and maintaining colonies), availability of technical expertise, as well as ethical and regulatory approvals. A method for rapid development of relevant animal models that has recently gained traction is the use of gene therapy vectors to express human viral receptors in readily accessible laboratory animals to enable virus infection and development of clinical disease. These models can be developed rapidly on any genetic background making mechanistic studies and accelerated evaluation of novel countermeasures possible. In this review, we will discuss important considerations for the effective development of animal models using viral vector approaches and review the current vector-based animal models for studying viral pathogenesis and evaluating prophylactic and therapeutic strategies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) faces several mathematical challenges, such as optimization, generalization, interpretability of models, and phase transitions. These problems significantly limit the application of AI in critical areas such as medicine, autonomous systems, and finance. This paper examines the main mathematical problems of AI and proposes solutions based on the use of the universality of the Riemann zeta function.

Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) are designed to provide adequate blood flow to patients suffering from heart failure. Once implanted, the patient becomes dependent on the VAD, making it unacceptable to have situations with the potential to cause harm to patients on circulatory support. The VADs can be categorized as Critical Systems (CS), as device malfunction or Adverse Events (AEs) can result in harm to the patient, including the risk of death. Undesirable situations can occur in two ways: deviations in the functionality of the VAD linked to failures or defects or deviations in the patient's physiological responses associated with AEs. The AEs can result in hospitalization, causing permanent harm to the patient, including the risk of death. Patient care is provided through in-person consultations, and reports of incidents are submitted through Medical Device Reports (MDRs), monitored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the crucial issue is that there is no real-time monitoring of AEs or supervision of patients. Therefore, an Open System for Supervising Critical Adverse Processes in Patients with Implanted Ventricular Assist Devices (OSCVAD) is proposed based on horizontal and vertical integration architecture. A method for structuring the processes in this system is proposed to address its complexity, involving different domains of operation: device, patient, and medical team, as well as the possible interactions between the entities that comprise the OSCVAD. In this context, the formalism of Interpreted Petri Nets was employed to synthesize diagnostic models for AEs and intervention models based on Intervention Protocols, utilizing the medical team's knowledge.

A comprehensive study (monitoring, thermodynamic modeling) of natural and anthropogenically polluted waters of the Lovozero Massif has been carried out. A thermodynamic study of the weathering of the Lovozero Massif within the “water-rock-atmosphere” system at a temperature of 5°C showed that the elements contained in the rocks of the studied massif influence the formation of the chemical composition of natural waters. It has been established that an increase in the degree of “water-rock” interaction leads to an increase in the concentrations of F, Cl, SО42-, HCO3- in the solution. This affects the mobility of lanthanum, cerium and other elements due to the formation of complex compounds with them. The relatively high content of fluorine, phosphorus, HCO3- (weak and medium acids) in the solution promotes the dissolution of silicates while Si, Al, P are released into the solution. Monitoring of water from a flooded mine in which there is an increase in the degree of interaction of water with rock showed higher pH values for the concentrations of Na, HCO3-, F-, P, Al, Si, V, U, La, Ce. The conclusions are relevant in the context of groundwater extraction for drinking water supply purposes. The obtained information is useful to evaluated the health of the population of the region under study.

In this work, we present two datasets for specific areas located in South Tyrol (Italy) and in Tyrol (Austria) that can be exploited to monitor and understand water resource dynamics in mountain regions. The idea is to provide the reader with information about the different sources of water supply over five defined test areas. The Snow Cover Fraction (SCF) and Soil Moisture Content (SMC) datasets are derived from machine learning algorithms based on remote sensing data. Both SCF and SMC products are characterized by a spatial resolution of 20 m and are provided for the period from October 2020 to May 2023 (SCF) and from October 2019 to September 2022 (SMC) respectively, each covering 3 seasons of interest, winter for SCF and spring-summer for SMC. For SCF maps, the validation with very high-resolution images shows high correlation coefficients of around 0.9. The SMC products were originally produced with an algorithm validated at global scale, but here, to obtain more insight in the specific alpine mountain environment, the values estimated from the maps are compared with ground measurements of automatic stations located at different altitudes and characterized by different aspects in the Val Mazia catchment in South Tyrol (Italy). In this case a MAE between 0.05 and 0.08 and an unbiased RMSE between 0.05 and 0.09 m3·m-3 were achieved. The datasets presented can be used as input for hydrological models as well as to hydrologically characterize the study alpine area starting from different sources of information.

The optimization, iteration and development of the new generation of intelligent equipment system and human-computer interaction interface put forward higher requirements for ensuring the safety of personnel, improving the efficiency of human-computer interaction and improving the efficiency of the system. Such as intelligent cabin adaptive cognitive decision aid system, how to adopt intelligent information display and human-computer interaction, optimize information processing, strengthen situational awareness; How to effectively present information and improve the efficiency of human-computer interaction, so that the system has good security, applicability and maximize its effectiveness; How to deal with man-machine matching and man-machine collaboration problems, so as to improve the efficiency of man-machine/unmanned collaborative work. Human factors throughout the life cycle of equipment systems must be fully considered. The human factor is considered in the system design, so that people, machines and the environment can work together and adapt to each other, so as to achieve benign interaction and feedback between people and equipment and interface and complete the full transmission and communication of human-machine intelligent interaction information. The development of new aircraft human-computer interaction systems combined with new technological methods has also gradually changed the role of pilots and staff. From the system operator gradually into the monitor and decision maker, especially with the improvement of the degree of intelligent flight, information technology, advanced complex airborne equipment is increasing, the amount of information that operators need to deal with is also increasing, and the allowed time for judgment and decision is very short, and the mental resources that pilots bear are gradually rising. As the mental load is a key factor affecting the allocation of cognitive tasks, when encountering emergency situations, the mental load overload caused by the increase of information processing tasks often occurs, which seriously affects the task performance of operators, physical and psychological comfort and flight safety, and thus affects the efficiency and safety of the entire aircraft man-machine system. This requires us to conduct real-time analysis of human-computer interaction situational awareness, especially the individual cognitive state as an uncontrollable factor.

An analysis of the current state of development in the agro-industrial complex (AIC) has established that freeze-drying is the most effective method for processing raw materials entering the drying stage. However, this drying method is hindered by the lack of modern, high-performance, energy-efficient drying technologies and equipment. The production of freeze-dried agricultural products will stimulate the development of AIC sectors. The implementation scheme of an automatic control system for a vacuum freeze-drying unit is considered, representing a promising and environmentally friendly direction in the processing of agricultural products. The drying equipment includes the following components and systems: a drying chamber, a cooling system, a vacuum pump, a control system, and a heating system. The product is placed on shelves in the drying chamber and frozen to a temperature that ensures the removal of 75-80% of the moisture contained in the product. The vacuum pump creates a pressure of 10-30 Pa and evacuates the spent air from the sublimator. Water vapor condensation occurs in the desublimator, and at the final stage of the drying process, the heating elements are activated to remove the remaining moisture. To validate the reliability of controlling the operating modes of the sublimator, experimental studies were conducted on the temperature dependence of the product on the surface and in the center over time. The graphs show temperature changes on the surface and in the center of the product throughout the drying process. The research results indicate that at a pressure of 20±5 Pa, the desublimator temperature should be below -20°C. The surface temperature of the product during the sublimation stage should be within the range of -25±5°C. Drying is completed when the chamber temperature reaches no more than 40°C, and the surface temperature of the product is around 30°C.

A basic limitation of the periodogram as frequency estimator is that any of its significant peaks may be produced by a diffuse (or spread) frequency component instead of a pure one. Diffuse components are common in applications such as channel estimation in which a given periodogram peak reveals the presence of a complex multipath distribution (unresolvable propagation paths or diffuse scattering, for example). We present a method to detect the presence of a diffuse component in a given peak based on analyzing the projection of the data vector onto the span of the signature’s derivatives up to a given order. Fundamentally, a diffuse component is detected if the energy in the derivatives’ subspace is too high at the peak’s frequency, and its spread is estimated as the ratio between this last energy and the peak’s energy. The method is based on exploiting the signature’s Vandermonde structure through the properties of discrete Chebyshev polynomials. We also present an efficient numerical procedure for computing the data component in the derivatives’ span based on barycentric interpolation. The paper contains a numerical assessment of the proposed estimator and detector.

Two new harziane diterpenes (1-2), five undescribed cyclonerane sesquiterpenes (3-7) and three known compounds, 11-cycloneren-3,7,10-triol (8), harziandione (9), and dehydroacetic acid (10) were isolated from Trichoderma hamatum b-3. Their structures were elucidated via comprehensive inspection of spectral evidences in HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR, the absolute configuration of 1-8 was confirmed by NMR, ECD calculation as well as Mosher's method. In vitro fungicidal activity showed that some compounds showed great inhibitory activity against pathogenic fungi including Fusarium graminearum, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Botrytis cinerea, and Rhizoctonia solani, among which compound 10 showed 100% inhibition of S. sclerotiorum and B. cinerea. In vivo activity test showed that compound 10 was 65.8% effective against B. cinerea and has the potential to be developed as a biocontrol pesticide.

Reliable soil moisture information is essential for accurate irrigation scheduling. A wide range of soil moisture sensors are currently available on the market, but their performance needs to be evaluated as most sensors are calibrated under limited laboratory conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of six commercially available moisture sensors (HydraProbe, Teros 10, Teros 11, EnviroPro, CS616 and Drill&Drop) and three tensiometers (Irrometer RSU-C-34, Teros 32 and Teros 21) and to establish calibration equations for a typical sandy soil of the Doñana National Park (Huelva, Spain). The calibration process for soil moisture sensors indicated dif-ferences between factory and corrected equations. All tested sensors improved with adjustments made to the factory calibration, except for the HydraProbe sensor which had a more accurate factory equation for a sandy soil. Among the various sensors tested, the Teros 10, Teros 11, and HydraProbe were found to be the easiest to install, typically positioned with an auger to prevent preferential pathways and ensure adequate sensor-soil contact. For tensiometers, the Teros 32 sensor requires specialized labor for its correct installation, as it must be positioned at a specific angle and maintained with distilled water. All tensiometers need a stabilization period after in-stallation.

Geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a crucial technology for mitigating global temperature rise. Near-depleted edge-bottom water reservoirs are attractive targets for CO2 storage, as they can not only enhance oil recovery (EOR) but also provide important potential candidates for geological storage. This study investigated CO2 enhanced oil recovery and storage for a typical near-depleted edge-bottom water reservoir that had been developed for a long time with a recovery factor of 51.93%. To improve the oil recovery and CO2 storage, new production scenarios are explored. At the near-depleted stage, by comparing the four different scenarios of water injection, gas injection, water alternating gas injection, and bi-directional injection, the highest additional recovery of 8.64% is achieved by the bi-directional injection scenario. Increasing the injection pressure leads to a higher gas-oil ratio and liquid production rate. After shifting from the near-depleted to depleted stage, the most effective approach to improve CO2 storage capacity is to increase reservoir pressure. At 1.4 times the initial reservoir pressure, the maximum storage capacity is 6.52×108 m3. However, excessive pressures boosting poses potential storage and leakage risks. Therefore, lower injection rates and longer intermittent injections are expected to achieve a larger amount of long-term CO2 storage. Through the numerical simulation study, a gas injection rate of 80,000 m3/day and a schedule of 4-6 years injection with 1 year shut-in was shown to be effective for the case considered. During 31 years of CO2 injection, the percentage dissolved CO2 increased from 5.46% to 6.23% during the near-depleted period, and to 7.76% during the depleted period. This study acts as a guide for the CO2 geological storage of typical near-depleted edge-bottom water reservoirs.

A lack of evidence exists regarding the intervention effect on motor performance, including the timing ability and health-related physical fitness, of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). We aimed to assess the effects of school-based intervention that improves fundamental motor skills (FMS) on the motor performance and health-related physical fitness of children with DCD. The participants were 55 children (age 8 – 9 years) with DCD. Children with DCD were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 27) or control group (n = 28). The intervention group participated in FMS training. The control group participated in a conventional physical education class. Motor performance was evaluated before and after the intervention using the Test of Gross Motor Development, second edition, Movement Assessment Battery for Children, second edition, and Interactive Metronome. Health-related physical fitness was assessed using the physical activity promotion system. A significant difference was observed when we considered the interaction effect of the intervention and time regarding motor performance and health-related physical fitness; however, no significant difference was observed regarding body composition. In conclusion, the intervention showed significant improvements in the parameters evaluated, suggesting that a school-based intervention to improve FMS may effectively improve the motor performance and health-related physical fitness of children with DCD.

Interdisciplinary research consists of many levels and pathways. One research level that has emerged since the early 21st century is called integration science. Specifically, we focus on a research pathway that structurally integrates social sciences with theoretical physics from perspectives of dynamic analysis. Building on nearly 20 years of prior work, this paper proposes a basic theory of integration science, laying the theoretical foundation for its subsequent development. The significance of integration science operates on three levels. First, identifying structural connections between different disciplines helps in our holistic understanding of natural and social phenomena. Second, generally speaking, the current level of conceptualization and modeling in natural sciences, especially physics, is ahead of social sciences. Integration science research can help elevate the level of conceptualization and modeling in social sciences. Third, the structural similarity across different disciplines reflects the shared thinking of scientists from various fields. Integration science is not simply a synthesis of knowledge from different disciplines. The standard of integration science is to enable social sciences and natural sciences to share the same mathematical structures, thereby possessing a unified mathematical language for description. The empirical basis of integration science is discussed, proposing a unified theory of interdisciplinary scientific observation. This includes concepts like the directionality of scientific observation and the orthogonal principle, the concept of observational disturbance and the diagonal law, defining low and high disturbance quadrants, and discussing why different disturbance quadrants follow their respective mathematical paths. The basic theory of integration science is proposed. The application of category theory in integration science is introduced, along with the necessary semantic supplements. The fundamental concepts of integration mathematics are proposed, defining concepts like integration points, lines, plans, and bulks, and discussing their algebraic and functional analysis methods, thereby laying the mathematical foundation for the integration science. The structural force hypothesis is proposed, along with an axiomatic system of structural forces, thereby laying the philosophical foundation for integrative science. Based on prior work, specific cases of integrative points, lines, plans, and bulks are provided.

With many Americans eager to resume travel after prolonged restrictions from the coronavirus pandemic, car rentals are on the rise. According to Auto Rental News, “2021 U.S. Car Rental Revenue Climbs 21% Year-Over-Year” (Brown, 2021). In conjunction with increased car rental, and associated travel, we can expect to see an increase in cyber security and data privacy attacks. In the digital age, enterprises have a responsibility to protect consumers’ personally identifiable information (PII). As it pertains to rental vehicles, when consumers connect their mobile devices to a rental vehicle’s Entertainment and Infotainment System or utilize the built-in navigation feature, they do so, unbeknownst to themselves that the information from their devices is transferring to the vehicle, where it will remain, unless properly expunged from the system. A large majority of consumers are blissfully unaware that their PII is being stored, and how easy it would be for an adversary to potentially breach their data security and privacy. To expand upon this hypothesis, I conducted a further investigation on the subject, by partaking in the rental of three different vehicles, each belonging to a different manufacturer (Nissan, Chrysler, and Maserati), from three different vehicle rental companies (Enterprise, Hertz and Turo). I then, as a consumer, tested my hypothesis to determine if, I was able to easily breach the prior consumers’ data security and privacy by viewing devices that had previously connected to the vehicle, as well as any of the previous consumers’ personal information. The results were undeniable; the PII of the previous consumers is not protected.

Background/Objectives: Energy availability (EA) is essential for maintaining physiological func-tions, significantly influencing athletes' health and performance. Nutritional behaviours, how-ever, vary across sports. This study aims to assess EA levels in athletes from different disciplines, focusing on the relationship between EA and body composition in endurance athletes compared to rugby players. Methods: The study involved 18 endurance athletes (15 men, 3 women) and 36 rugby players (all men). Data were gathered through interviews, questionnaires, and bioim-pedance analysis. Energy intake (EI) was measured with a 24-hour dietary recall, and exercise energy expenditure (EEE) was calculated using the IPAQ questionnaire. EA was calculated as EA = (EI - EEE) / fat-free mass (FFM), with results categorized into clinical, subclinical, and optimal ranges. Results: The endurance group had a lower average FFM (57.81 kg) compared to the rugby players (67.61 kg). EA was also significantly lower in endurance athletes (11.72 kcal/kg FFM) than in rugby players (35.44 kcal/kg FFM). Endurance athletes showed more restrictive nutritional behaviour with lower EI and higher EEE, but both groups maintained body composition within normal ranges. Conclusions: Endurance athletes exhibit greater nutritional restrictions compared to rugby players, though their body composition remains healthy. Further research is required to investigate the long-term effects of low EA on performance, injury risk, and potential impairment when EA falls below the optimal threshold of 45 kcal/kg FFM/day.

Background: Extensive-stage SCLC (ES-SCLC) treatment has recently been revolutionized by the advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors. This survey was conducted to evaluate the current pattern of care among Italian clinicians, in particular about the integration with radiation therapy (RT). Methods: In June 2023, 225 Italian cancer care professionals were invited to 21-question web-based survey about the ES-SCLC management through personal contacts and the Italian Association for Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO) network. Results: We received 90 responses, the majority were radiation oncologists (89%) with more than 10 years of experience (51%). Preferred management of ES-SCLC in patients with a good performance status was concomitant chemo-immunotherapy (84%). Almost all respondents recommended prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) (85%), taking into account age and thoracic response; PCI was performed mainly between the end of chemotherapy before starting immunotherapy (37%), with three-dimensional conformal technique (46%). Furthermore, 83% of respondents choose to deliver thoracic RT in case of both intrathoracic and extrathoracic response with a RT schedule of 30 Gy/10 fractions. Stereotactic RT is increasingly being used in oligoprogressions. Conclusions: Our analysis showed the variability of real-world management of ES-SCLC. Future clinical trials and developments are needed to improve the multidisciplinary treatment of these patients.

Thoracostomy and chest tube placement are key procedures in treating various pleural diseases involving the accumulation of fluids (e.g. malignant effusions, serous, pus, or blood) or air (pneumothorax) in the pleural cavity. Initially described by Hippocrates and refined through the centuries, chest drainage obtained historical milestones with the creation in the 19th century of closed drainage systems with methods to prevent the entry of air into the pleural space and to reduce infection risk. The introduction of plastic materials and the Heimlich valve further revolutionized chest tube design and function. Technological advancements led to the availability of various chest tube designs (straight, angled, pig-tail) and drainage systems, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and silicone tubes with radiopaque stripes for better radiological visualization. Modern chest drainage units (CDUs) can incorporate smart digital systems that monitor and graphically report pleural pressure and evacuated fluid/air, improving patient outcomes. The application of suction, whether via wall systems or portable digital devices, enhances the efficacy of pleural drainage, although careful regulation is needed to avoid complications such as reexpansion pulmonary edema or prolongation of air-leak. To prevent recurrent effusion, particularly due to malignancy, pleuroedsis agents can be applied through a chest tube into the pleural space. In other circumstances, such as non-expandable lung (NEL), maintaining a long-term chest drain may be the most appropriate approach and procedures such as placement of an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) can significantly improve quality of life. Continued innovations and rigorous training ensure that chest tube insertion remains a cornerstone of effective pleural disease management.

Metabolic diseases are major diseases affecting animal welfare, health and production of small ruminants´ flocks for dairy and meat purposes. In breeding females, they mainly occur from six to eight weeks before and after parturition, respectively. The pregnancy toxemia and lactational ketosis are manifestations of hyperketonemia, primarily due to energetic deficit. Hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia are related to the metabolic availably of calcium and magnesium, respectively. This review aimed to identify and discuss the current and most relevant aspects related to individual and herd heath management of these interrelated metabolic diseases with impact in the sheep and goats´ farm sustainability. These diseases are primarily due to nutritional deficit, but homeostatic and homeorhetic disruptions are responsible for clinical signs and forms. Currently, their clinical diagnosis and monitoring are mainly supported by biochemistry from animal fluids, and bromatological evaluation of the feed. Epidemiological studies, measuring risks factors, also contributes for their prevention. Nevertheless, research on specific biomarkers and composite indexes related to these diseases, in a context of herd health management and precision medicine, are new pathways driven to a suitable and efficient animal production.
