The segmentation of urban scene mobile laser scanning (MLS) data into meaningful street objects is a great challenge due to the scene complexity of street environments, especially in the vicinity of street objects such as poles and trees. This paper proposes a three-stage method for the segmentation of urban MLS data at the object level. The original unorganized point cloud is first voxelized, and all information needed is stored in the voxels. These voxels are then classified as ground and non-ground voxels. In the second stage, the whole scene is segmented into clusters by applying a density-based clustering method based on two key parameters: local density and minimum distance. In the third stage, a merging step and a re-assignment processing step are applied to address the over-segmentation problem and noise points, respectively. We tested the effectiveness of the proposed methods on two urban MLS datasets. The overall accuracies of the segmentation results for the two test sites are 98.3% and 97%, thereby validating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

It is increasingly common for experiments in biology and medicine to involve large numbers of hypothesis tests. A natural graphical method for visualizing these tests is to construct a histogram from the p-values of these tests. In this article, we examine the shapes, both normal and abnormal, that these histograms can take on, as well as present simple inferential procedures that help to interpret the shapes in terms of diagnosing potential problems with the experiment. We examine potential causes of these problems in detail, and discuss potential remedies. Throughout, examples of abnormal-looking p-value histograms are provided and based on case studies involving real biological experiments.

Background: Significant intraoperative and postoperative blood loss are rare but possibly life-threatening complications after lung resection surgery either during open or minimally invasive procedure. Microporous Polysaccharide Hemospheres (ARISTA™AH) have demonstrated time-efficient haemostasis, lower post-operative blood volumes and a lower blood transfusion requirement, without any identified adverse events across other specialities.The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of haemostatic agents on short-term postoperative outcomes in thoracic surgery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed a prospectively collected database of consecutive early-stage lung cancer patients surgically treated in two European centres(October 2020-December 2022).Exclusion criteria:open surgery,patients with coagulopathy/anticoagulant medication,major intraoperative bleeding,non-anatomical lung resection and age <18 years.The cohort was divided into 5 groups according to the haemostatic agent used.Propensity score matching was used to estimate the effect of ARISTA™AH on various intra- and post-operative parameters(continuous and binary outcome modelling). Results:482 patients(M/F:223/259; VATS 97/RATS 385)with a mean age of 68.9(±10.6)years were analysed.In 253 cases ARISTA™AH was intraoperatively used to control bleeding.This cohort of patients had a significant reduction in total drain volume by 135 mls(standard error 53.9; p=0.012).The use of ARISTA™AH did reduce the average length of hospital stay(-1.47 days)and duration of chest drainage(-0.596 days)albeit not significant.In the ARISTA™AH group,we observed no postoperative bleeding,no blood transfusion required,no 30-day mortality and no requirement for redo-surgery.The use of ARISTA™AH significantly reduced the odds of post-operative complications,need for transfusion and redo surgery. Conclusion: Our data showed that Microporous Polysaccharide Hemospheres are a safe and effective haemostatic device.Its use has a positive effect in short term postoperative outcomes of patients surgically treated for early-stage lung cancer.

This study investigates the impact of water stress on grapevines, specifically examining the role of rootstocks and aquaporins. Two experiments on potted plants were conducted in central Chile during the summer, under conditions of high water demand, involving various rootstock genotypes and combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) grafted onto rootstocks. Significant differences were observed among plants in terms of stem water potential, stomatal conductance, and growth rate. Notably, the CS/CS combination consistently displayed the slowest growth rate, regardless of the irrigation treatment. The study also analyzed the expression levels of plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) and tonoplast intrinsic proteins (TIPs) aquaporins in the leaves of grafted plants. Specifically, VvPIP2;2 aquaporins showed reduced expression after 14 days without irrigation, whereas VvTIP1;1 and VvTIP2;1 expression levels correlated positively with gs responses in grafted plants, suggesting their role in modulating water content in leaves under water stress. TIP aquaporins likely play a significant role in the differential responses of CS plants towards nearly isohydric or anisohydric behaviour. The CS/CS combination exhibited near isohydric behavior, correlating with lower TIP aquaporin expression, while the combination of CS onto 1103P and 101-14 showed higher expression, indicating anisohydric behavior. The findings suggest that grafted plants are more resilient to water stress, supporting the idea that rootstocks can mitigate the effects of water stress on the scion.

Breast cancer is currently the second leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 15% of all deaths (8.2 million deaths). Approximately 20% of breast cancer diagnoses are triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a type of cancer that lacks receptors for estrogen (ER negative), progesterone (PR negative), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2/neu negative). Consequently, TNBC doesn’t respond to hormonal or targeted therapies, making it challenging to treat due to its rapid growth, metastasis, and high recurrence rate within the first three years of therapy. Alternative chemotherapies are needed to address this problem. Pharmacological dose of vitamin C (high-dose VC) has been identified as a potential treatment for some cancer cells. The present study aimed to evaluate whether VC has a therapeutic effect on TNBC using MDA-MB-231 cells as the model. MTT assay, Hoechst 33342 staining, Nuclear ID Red/Green staining, Rhodamine 123 staining, and Western blot analysis were employed to test the hypothesis that pharmacological dose of VC can kill TNBC cells. Upregulation of Apaf-1, caspases -3, -6, -7, -8, and -9, inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9), reduction in cell cycle protein expression, and enhancement of tumor suppressor proteins such as p53 and p21 indicated that pharmacological dose of VC has promising anti-cancer properties in the treatment of TNBC.

By examining the strategies, priorities, outcomes, and challenges associated with implementing smart city initiatives in these cities, the study identifies areas of alignment and divergence with Qatar's own smart city policy framework. The research highlights potential opportunities for cross-learning and suggests how Qatar can leverage lessons from international best practices to enhance its smart city initiatives. Key areas of focus include fostering strategic partnerships, promoting innovation, and ensuring effective governance and data management systems. The findings provide actionable insights to improve the effectiveness of Qatar's smart city projects, aligning them with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

Recent studies with ApoE knockout (ApoE-/-) mice deficient for PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide) or its receptor PAC1 provide evidence for a possible involve-ment of immune- and vasoregulatoy PACAP signaling at the PAC1 receptor in atherogenesis and plaque associated vascular inflammation. Therefore, we tested the PAC1 receptor agonist Maxadilan and the PAC1 selective antagonist M65 on plaque development and lumen stenosis in the ApoE-/- atherosclerosis model for possible anti-atherogenic effects. Adult male ApoE-/- mice were fed a cholesterol-enriched diet (CED) or standard chow (SC) treat-ed with Maxadilan, M65 or Sham. Effects of treatment on atherosclerotic plaques, lumen stenosis, apoptosis and pro-inflammatory signatures were analyzed in the brachiocephalic trunk (BT). The percentage of Maxadilan treated mice exhibiting plaques under SC and CED was lower than that of Sham or M65 treatment indicating opposite effects of Maxadilan and M65. Maxadilan ap-plication inhibited lumen stenosis under SC and CED compared to Sham. In spite of significantly increased cholesterol levels, lumen stenosis of Maxadilan-treated mice was similar under CED and SC. In contrast, M65 under SC or CED did not reveal a significant influence on lumen steno-sis. Maxadilan significantly reduced the TNF-α+ area in the plaques under CED, but not under SC. In contrast, the IL-1β+ area was reduced after Maxadilan treatment under SC, but remained unchanged under CED compared to Sham. Maxadilan reduced the caspase-3+ area in the media under both SC and CED without affecting lipid content in plaques. Despite persisting hypercholesterolemia, Maxadilan reduces lumen stenosis, apoptosis and TNF-α driven inflammation. Our data suggest that Maxadilan provides atheroprotection by act-ing downstream of cholesterol-induced vascular inflammation. This implicates the potential of PAC1-specific agonist drugs against atherosclerosis even beyond statins and PCSK-9.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are a significant health concern, particularly in women, with almost half of them experiencing at least one UTI in their lifetime. This problem is further compounded by the high recurrence rate within 6-12 months. Postmenopausal women are especially vulnerable to recurrent UTI due to the natural decline in estrogen levels, which alters the urogenital epithelium and subsequently affects the urogenital microbiome. Methods: This study included 674 female patients that were admited at "Dr. Carol Davila" Central Military Emergency University Hospital in Bucharest over a period of 3 years. Results: Of the 674 women with urinary tract infection, 435 (79.3%) had more than one positive culture, and 239 (35.4%) experienced at least one recurrent urinary tract infection 6-12 months after the initial diagnosis. The mean age of women with urinary tract infection was 63 (± 15.61 years). Recurrent urinary tract infections were most prevalent in those aged 65-80 years (52%). Escherichia coli was detected in 71% of the positive cultures. Conclusions: The management of recurrent urinary tract infections in women presents a complex challenge that necessitates a multifaceted approach. The emerging understanding of the urobiome and its role in bladder health offers promising avenues for developing targeted interventions. As research in this field advances, it is imperative to integrate these new insights into clinical practice to balance traditional antibiotic treatments with novel strategies that consider the intricate microbial ecosystem of the urinary tract.

Disruptions in power quality have a negative impact on many energy consumers. These include lighting, where interference manifests itself, among others, in the form of light flickering. The article presents phenomena accompanying the operation of modern light sources against the background of exemplary results of studies on the flicker of conventional light sources, such as incandescent or fluorescent lamps. To assess the effects of these phenomena, it is necessary to use measures other than those traditionally used. The results of measurements carried out in accordance with different recommendations take into account both power supply disturbances and the properties of modern light sources.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease significantly impacting women, with disease severity often modulated by hormonal fluctuations. This review examines the influence of hormonal changes on the course of psoriasis in women, focusing on key life stages—including the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause—and their impact on disease progression and symptomatology. Estrogen, the principal female sex hormone, plays a critical role in immune modulation. Variations in estrogen levels, which occur naturally throughout a woman's life, are associated with fluctuations in psoriasis severity. Low estrogen levels, as seen during menstruation or menopause, are linked to symptom exacerbation, while elevated levels during pregnancy may reduce symptoms in some women. However, responses are variable, with others experiencing no change or worsening during pregnancy. Postpartum, the rapid decline in estrogen often triggers severe flare-ups, while menopause, marked by a sustained estrogen reduction, frequently correlates with increased disease severity and flare frequency. The review also addresses the profound impact of psoriasis on women’s quality of life, including physical discomfort, psychological distress, and social stigma. Additionally, fertility concerns are discussed, as severe psoriasis and associated treatments may increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Consideration is given to hormonal therapies, lifestyle modifications, and their effects on psoriasis, underscoring the need for personalized treatment approaches that account for hormonal influences. Understanding these hormonal dynamics is essential for developing targeted, effective management strategies that enhance quality of life for women affected by psoriasis.

introduction In the professional practice of nursing, differences have been described between the habitus shared in the academic training process and the professional practice developed in the field of health systems; in this scenario, nurses tend to be affected by how their professional habitus has been established, which, in some way, alters the cultural capital established in their academic training process. The research objective was to identify aspects that facilitate and limit the development of the theoretical component in nursing practice.Method: The research was based on a qualitative hermeneutic study addressed from a critical approach that linked Bourdieu's field theory. The study included 17 students, 11 nurses active in health services, and six university professors. Data were collected from a sociodemographic questionnaire, episodic interviews, and focus groups. The information collected was analyzed using the hermeneutic understanding process from the grounded theory.Results: The research revealed a central thematic core called clarification of the role of the nurse (professional habitus) and three secondary thematic cores related to the need to strengthen the nursing essence (identity habitus), the adjustment of training processes (optimization habitus) and, finally, the strengthening of the nurse's credibility (validation habitus).Conclusion: The professional habitus of nursing professionals is shaped by different elements of the social field of the health system. This field is repressed by hierarchical structures that succeed in disconnecting theory from praxis. Aspects such as subordination to the hegemonic biological discourse and the medical profession, the limited appreciation of humanized care, restrictions on the recognition of the nursing process by health institutions, and limited solidarity and leadership end up conditioning the accumulation of symbolic capital and social capital of nursing, which leads to the loss of autonomy and the advancement of professional development.

The present paper tackles the important issue of tensile ultimate strength of ceramic matrix composites, using a multiscale approach. The ultimate strength is investigated at the successive increasing length scales inherent to 2D woven SiC/SiC composites, i.e. single filaments, fiber tow, minicomposites reinforced with a single tow, and 2D woven composite. First experimental results on tensile behavior under strain-controlled conditions are summarized for tows, minicomposites and composites. Then, models of tow ultimate failure under controlled force and strain are presented. A criterion of tow failure is developed for filament fracture initiation and then propagation based on applied stress and on filament strength gradient. The model of ultimate failure of minicomposite under strain-controlled condition is based on the strength of filaments in the presence of matrix cracks and the overstress induced by interactions of broken filaments and the matrix. The variability of ultimate strengths of filaments, minicomposites and composites at various gauge lengths is described by linear p-quantile diagrams which indicates that the data follow normal distribution function. The contribution of structural effects to variability of composite and minicomposite strength under strain-controlled loading is analyzed. Their dependence on specimen size is related to reproducibility of critical flaw population and structural effects.

The proliferation of cloud computing has given rise to challenges in security that established perimeter-based models cannot easily adapt to. The new buzzword Zero Trust, which is based on the principle of "never trust, always verify," has been looked up as one of the promising solutions. Is Zero Trust a certainty or pie in the sky for security in the cloud? This is discussed further in this paper. This philosophical approach leads us through the earlier work and scientific literature available on the subject, presenting Zero Trust's capabilities, advantages when introduced into cloud security architecture, and obstacles about its incorporation. The study finds that Zero Trust holds the potential to enhance cloud security significantly, but it is no silver bullet and demands careful implementation and further studies to understand its intricacies as well as pitfalls.

Insurance companies need to calculate solvency capital requirements in order to ensure that they can meet their future obligations to policyholders and beneficiaries. The solvency capital requirement is a risk management tool essential for, when extreme catastrophic events occur, resulting in a high number of possibly interdependent claims. This paper studies the problem of aggregating the risks coming from several insurance business lines and analyses the effect of reinsurance in the level of risk. Our starting point is to use a Hierarchical Risk Aggregation method, which was initially based on 2-dimensional elliptical copulas. We then propose the use of copulas from the Archimedean family and a mixture of different copulas. Our results show that a mixture of copulas can provide a better fit to the data than an individual copula and consequently avoid over or underestimating of the capital requirement of an insurance company. We also investigate the significance of reinsurance in reducing the insurance company’s business risk and its effect on diversification. The results show that reinsurance does not always reduce the level of risk, but can also reduce the effect of diversification for insurance companies with multiple business lines.

The primary goal of Theory of Everything (ToE) is to unify General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, establishing a theoretical framework that explains all natural phenomena and fundamental laws of the universe. The rapid development of artificial intelligence in the 21st century presents new opportunities for the establishment of TOE. Research has revealed that the observer and the agent, as key concepts in physics and intelligence science respectively, share intrinsic consistency. Using this as a breakthrough point, we first proposed Standard Agent Model, which, from the perspective of information processing, establishes a unified structure for agents. This model posits that any agent possesses five essential capabilities: input, output, storage, creation, and control of these four capabilities.By setting the values of these five essential capabilities in Standard Agent Model to either zero or infinity, we identify two extreme states of agents: Absolute Zero Agent (α Point) and Omniscient and Omnipotent Agent (Ω Point). Based on the evolution of agents towards these two extreme states, we derive two driving forces for agent evolution: α Gravity and Ω Gravity. These elements collectively form General Model of Agent Evolution.Building on the first two models, we further derive Intelligent Universe Evolution Model, proposing that Universe, as an agent, evolves dynamically between α Point and Ω Point under the influence of α Field and Ω Field. These three models together constitute "Theory of Universal Intelligent Evolution," abbreviated as Ω Theory. According to Ω Theory, we demonstrate that the observer in physics and a wide range of research objects can be unified within the framework of Standard Agent Model. Additionally, we argue that the four fundamental forces have the potential to be unified into α Gravity and Ω Gravity.Within the framework of Ω Theory, through theoretical analysis and experimental validation, it has been demonstrated that the differences between classical mechanics, relativity, and quantum mechanics stem from the varying intelligence levels assigned to observers. Furthermore, it has been discovered that the differences in intelligent characteristics between the theoretical Universe proposed by these three major physical theories and Universe in which humanity currently resides are the root cause of the varying precision and limitations of these theories.

As the global economy pays increasing attention to sustainable development and environmental protection, the role of green finance in promoting regional technological innovation is becoming more and more prominent. This study aims to analyse the impact of green finance on regional technological innovation and its mechanism of action, with special attention to the mediating effect of R&D inputs and the moderating role of regional characteristics. By analysing the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2008 to 2021 with fixed and mediated effect models, the results show that green finance significantly promotes regional technological innovation. R&D investment intensity partially mediates this effect, while regional innovation and entrepreneurship capacity plays a significant moderating role in this relationship. Specifically, regional innovation and entrepreneurship capacity reinforces the positive impact of green finance on R&D investment, but the marginal effect of R&D investment is reduced in regions with stronger innovation and entrepreneurship capacity. The findings provide a theoretical basis for formulating relevant policies to promote green finance development and sustainable innovation in regional economies.

Here, we describe the bicomplex (p,q)- Fibonacci numbers and the bicomplex (p,q)- Fibonacci quaternions that are based on these numbers and give some of their equations, including the Binet formula, generating function, Catalan, Cassini, d’Ocagne’s identities, and some summation formulas for both of them. Finally, we create a matrix for bicomplex (p,q)- Fibonacci quaternions, and we obtain a determinant of a special matrix that gives the terms of that quaternion.

In this paper, some convexity properties and some inequalities for the (p,k)-analogue of the Gamma function, Г_p,k(x) are given. In particular, a (p,k)-analogue of the celebrated Bohr-Mollerup theorem is given. Furthermore, a (p,k)-analogue of the Riemann zeta function, ζ_p,k(x) is introduced and some associated inequalities are derived. The established results provide the (p,k)-generalizations of some known results concerning the classical Gamma function.

Explainability is essential for AI models, especially in clinical settings where understanding the model's decisions is crucial. Despite their impressive performance, black-box AI models are unsuitable for clinical use if their operations cannot be explained to clinicians. While deep neural networks (DNNs) represent the forefront of model performance, their explanations are often not easily interpretable by humans. On the other hand, using hand-crafted features extracted to represent different aspects of the input data and traditional machine learning models are generally more understandable. However, they often lack the effectiveness of advanced models due to human limitations in feature design. To address this, we propose ExShall-CNN, a novel explainable shallow convolutional neural network for medical image processing. This model enhances hand-crafted features to maintain human interpretability while achieving performance levels comparable to advanced deep convolutional networks, such as U-Net, for medical image segmentation. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique widely used in ophthalmology for visualizing retinal layers, aiding in early detection and monitoring of retinal diseases. OCT is useful for detecting diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME), which affect millions of people globally. Over the past decade, the area of application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Deep Learning (DL), has significantly increased. The number of medical applications is also rising, with solutions from other domains being increasingly applied to OCT. The segmentation of biomarkers is an essential problem that can enhance the quality of retinal disease diagnostics. For 3D OCT scans, AI is beneficial since manual segmentation is very labor-intensive. In this paper, we employ the new SAM 2 and MedSAM 2 for the segmentation of OCT volumes for two open-source datasets, comparing their performance with the traditional U-Net. The model achieved an overall Dice score of 0.913 and 0.902 for macular holes (MH) and intraretinal cysts (IRC) on OIMHS and 0.888 and 0.909 for intraretinal fluid (IRF) and pigment epithelial detachment (PED) on the AROI dataset, respectively.

Measuring cell confluence in high-throughput screening of pharmaceutics, cell culture monitoring, cancer research, and industrial applications requires quantitative and standardizable measures to minimize subjective observations and increase throughput1-12 . Over the past half-century, non-invasive specialized programs have been created to quantitatively assess cell confluence, and some software tools exist to meet these needs1,4,5,6,7,8,9 . However, many of these tools are expensive, computationally-demanding, or inaccessible to non-experts1,6. With the assistance of generative artificial intelligence, we have developed the Confluence Analysis Program (CAP), a modern tool designed to be precise, interactive, and user-friendly. CAP is written entirely in Python and runs in any command-line interface (CLI), including Terminal (OS) and Command Prompt (Windows). In addition to fetching all necessary external libraries automatically and prompting drag-and-drop image retrieval, CAP features live visual comparison of cell mass identification to the original image assay. Our results demonstrate robust performance of CAP on fluorescent micrographs of varying confluences ranging from low to high. CAP is provided as a free resource, accessible in the Supplementary Materials.

Our world is increasingly challenged by managing the impacts of natural disasters, particularly floods, which are frequent, dangerous, and costly. Traditional flood mapping methods, reliant on Optical satellites (MSI), struggle under cloud cover which is typical during such events. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offers a promising alternative with its cloud-penetrating capability, though its use has been limited due to complexity and data labeling challenges. This project aims to develop a SAR-based flood segmentation model that can rapidly and accurately map floods globally, with high adaptability to different flood types and regions. By utilizing deep learning and a novel transfer-learning technique that combines the strengths of Optical/MSI and SAR data, the model seeks to bypass the challenges of manual labeling and improve mapping accuracy. Initial results show the model's effective generalization across various flood events, with superior performance indicated by an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 0.72, outperforming existing methods and demonstrating promising capabilities in precise flood mapping.

We introduce a novel microscopic image dataset augmented with segmentation and detection labels specifically designed for microplastic analysis in sewage environments. Recognizing the increasing concern over microplastics — particles of synthetic polymers smaller than 5mm — and their detrimental effects on marine ecosystems and human health, our research focuses on enhancing detection and analytical methodologies through advanced computer vision and deep learning techniques. The dataset comprises high-resolution microscopic images of microplastics collected from sewage, meticulously labeled for both segmentation and detection tasks, aiming to facilitate accurate and efficient identification and quantification of microplastic pollution. In addition to dataset development, we present example deep learning models optimized for segmentation and detection of microplastics within complex sewage samples. The models demonstrate significant potential in automating the analysis of microplastic contamination, offering a scalable solution to environmental monitoring challenges. Furthermore, we ensure the accessibility and reproducibility of our research by making the dataset and model codes publicly available, accompanied by detailed documentation on GitHub and LabelBox. Semantic segmentation of remote sensing urban scene imagery is a pixel-wise prediction, which is applied to identify the land-cover or land-use category. However, semantic segmentation demands huge computation cost. In order to reduce the huge computation cost, a common method is to introduce transformer and CNN hybrid method to have a good trade-off between accuracy and computation cost. However, recent CNN-transformer hybrid methods often capture local-global context and cross-window interaction information simultaneously. Then they introduce the local-global context to fuse the local feature, which repeat fuse the local and global feature and result in the additional computation cost. And previous methods often ignore to filter the local and global feature. To fix the problem, we design a lightweight decoder-EDDformer, which is Efficient Global Value Transformer with Dynamic Gatefusion module. Efficient global value transformer only response for extracting global feature. Dynamic Gatefusion module filter the local and global semantic feature and fuse them to capture the local-global context in one time. Extensive experiments reveal that our method not only runs faster but also achieves higher accuracy compared with other state-of-the-art lightweight models.

This article presents a method that uses a semi-automatic algorithm for the detection and analysis of microcracks in steel test specimens using binarized image analysis. It obtains the length along the crack path in contrast to previous methods that have obtained linear length, thereby achieving a closer approximation to its actual value. Additionally, this method automatically calculates the COD and COA parameters with measurement deviations in micrometres, thus providing greater precision than previous methods proposed to date.

Accurate pose estimation is a fundamental ability that all mobile robots must posses in order to navigate a given environment. Much like a human, this ability is dependent on the robot's understanding of a given scene. For Autonomous Vehicles (AV's), detailed 3D maps created beforehand are widely used to augment the perceptive abilities and estimate pose based on current sensor measurements. This approach however is less suited for rural communities that are sparsely connected and cover large areas. Topological maps such as OpenStreetMaps have proven to be a useful alternative in these situations. However, vehicle localization using these maps is non-trivial, particularly for the global localization task, where the map spans large areas. To deal with this challenge, we propose road descriptors along with an initialization technique for localization that allows for fast global pose estimation. We test our algorithms on (real world) maps and benchmark them against other map based localization as well as SLAM algorithms. Our results show that the proposed method can narrow down the pose to within 50 centimeters of the ground truth significantly faster than the state of the art methods.

Foraminifera are single-celled marine organisms that construct shells that remain as fossils in the marine sediments. Classifying and counting these fossils are important in e.g. paleo-oceanographic and -climatological research. However, the identification and counting process has been performed manually since the 1800s and is laborious and time-consuming. In this work, we present a deep learning-based instance segmentation model for classifying, detecting, and segmenting microscopic foraminifera. Our model is based on the Mask R-CNN architecture, using model weight parameters that have learned on the COCO detection dataset. We use a fine-tuning approach to adapt the parameters on a novel object detection dataset of more than 7000 microscopic foraminifera and sediment grains. The model achieves a (COCO-style) average precision of 0.78±0.00 on the classification and detection task, and 0.80±0.00 on the segmentation task. When the model is evaluated without challenging sediment grain images, the average precision for both tasks increases to 0.84±0.00 and 0.86±0.00, respectively. Prediction results are analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively and discussed. Based on our findings we propose several directions for future work, and conclude that our proposed model is an important step towards automating the identification and counting of microscopic foraminifera.

Active contour models present a robust segmentation approach which make efficient use of specific information about objects in the input data rather than processing all the data. They have been widely used in many applications including image segmentation, object boundary localisation, motion tracking, shape modelling, stereo matching and object reconstruction. In this paper, we investigate the potential of active contour models in extracting roads from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) data. The categorisation of active contours based on their mathematical representation and implementation are discussed in detail. We discuss an integrated version in which active contour models are combined to overcome their limitations. We review various active contour based methodologies which have been developed to extract roads and other features from LiDAR and digital imaging datasets. We present a small case study in which an integrated version of active contour models is applied to automatically extract road edges from MLS dataset. An accurate extraction of left and right edges from the tested road section validates the use of active contour models. The present study provides a valuable insight on the potential of active contours for extracting roads and other infrastructures from 3D LiDAR point cloud data.

1) Introduction: Brain parcellation is an important processing step in the analysis of structural brain MRI. Existing software implementations are optimized for fully developed adult brains, and provide inadequate results when applied to neonatal brain imaging. 2) Methods: We developed a semi-automated pipeline, NeBSS, for extracting 50 discrete brain structures from neonatal brain MRI, using an atlas registration method that leverages the existing ALBERT neonatal atlas 3) Results: We demonstrate a simple linear workflow for neonatal brain parcellation. NeBSS is robust to variation in imaging acquisition protocol and magnet field strength. 4) Conclusion: NeBSS is a robust pipeline capable of parcellating neonatal brain MRIs using a simple processing workflow. NeBSS fills a need in clinical translational research in neonatal imaging, where existing automated or semi-automated implementations are too rigid to be successfully applied to multi-center neuroprotection studies and clinically heterogeneous cohorts. The software is open source and freely available.

We introduce the notion of p-adic equiangular lines and derive the first fundamental relation between common angle, dimension of the space and the number of lines. More precisely, we show that if {τj} n j=1 is p-adic γ-equiangular lines in Qd p , then (1) |n| 2 ≤ |d| max{|n|, γ2 }. We call Inequality (1) as the p-adic van Lint-Seidel relative bound. This article presents a proposed system that enables energy transfer from the dc grid to a single-phase onboard grid, operating at an hi frequency. In addition to the energy transfer function, it additionally enables compensation of reactive power in the ac grid when the converter operates at less than rated power. To operate in compensator mode, it is necessary to decouple the current from the grid into active and reactive components and control them independently. To achieve good dynamics, synchronizers that operate in the dq system are used. In the case of a single-phase grid, it requires such a synchronizer to generate virtual quadrature signals. The used systems based on second-order generalized integrator are good, but to improve dynamics in the work a quadrature generator based on trigonometric calculations was proposed. The developed system was implemented in a proportional resonant current control system. Tests performed in steady state and in dynamic states related to typical grid disturbances showed better dynamic properties than the standard integrator-based system.Keywords: power transfer; compensator; P+R controller

Arc sensors have been used in seam tracking and widely studied since the 80s; commercial arc sensing products for T and V shaped grooves have been developed. However, it is difficult to use these arc sensors in narrow gap welding because arc stability and sensing accuracy are not satisfactory. Pulse gas melting arc welding (P-GMAW) has been successfully applied in narrow gap welding and all position welding processes, so it is worthwhile to research P-GMAW arc sensing technology. In this paper, we derived a linear mathematical P-GMAW model for arc sensing, and the assumptions for the model are verified through experiments and finite element methods. Finally, the linear characteristics of the mathematical model were investigated. In torch height changing experiments, uphill experiments, and groove angle changing experiments the P-GMAW arc signals all satisfied the linear rules. In addition, the faster the welding speed, the higher the arc signal sensitivities; the smaller the groove angle, the greater the arc sensitivities. The arc signal variation rate needs to be modified according to the welding power, groove angles, and swing or rotate speed.

Pardosa pseudoannulata is one of the most common wandering spiders in agricultural fields and a potentially good bioindicator for heavy metal contamination. However, little is known about the mechanism by which spiders respond to heavy metals at the molecular level. In this study, high-throughput transcriptome sequencing was employed to characterize the de novo transcriptome of the spiders and to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after cadmium exposure. We obtained 60,489 assembled unigenes, 18,773 of which were annotated in the public databases. Ultimately, 3450 cDNA simple sequence repeats were identified and validated as potential molecular markers in the unigenes. A total of 2939, 2491 and 3759 DEGs were detected among the three libraries of two Cd-treated groups and the control. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that metabolism processes and digestive system function were predominately enriched in response to Cd stress. At the cellular and molecular levels, significantly enriched pathways in lysosomes and phagosomes as well as replication, recombination and repair demonstrated that oxidative damage resulted from Cd exposure. Based on the selected DEGs, certain critical genes involved in defence and detoxification were analysed. These results may elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying spiders' responses to heavy metal stress.

The emergence of mRNA vaccines represents a significant advancement in public health by conferring protection against a variety of infectious diseases. However, concerns regarding the potential risk of inducing or exacerbating autoimmune disorders, particularly connective tissue diseases (CTDs), have arisen. This paper explores the mechanisms by which mRNA vaccines may lead to the onset or worsening of CTDs, focusing on the immune responses induced by Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs), the interactions between Toll-like receptors 7/8 and 9 (TLR7/8 and TLR9), and the activation of self-reactive B cells. Furthermore, guidelines are suggested for administering vaccines to individuals at elevated risk, such as those with a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test or specific rheumatic disease genes. Our findings underscore the necessity for targeted vaccination strategies that mitigate risks while maintaining public health efficacy.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most significant arboviral infection in Croatia. The aim of the study was to analyse and correlate 17-year TBE seroprevalence data with winter temperature, precipitation and wildlife abundance to identify possible patterns that can be predictive of TBE incidence. TBE diagnosis was based on IgM/IgG anti-TBE antibodies and individual clinical interpretation of the results. Of the 19,094 analysed patients, 4.2% had acute TBE, significantly more often in older age (p<0.001) and in men (p<0.001). Overall seroprevalence of TBE among the tested population was 5.8%, and varied annually from 2.8% to 10.7%. The mean acute TBE incidence rate was 1.1 per 100.000 population with significant regional differences: 1.7 in the continental vs. 0.2 and 0.5 in the Mediterranean and Alpine regions, respectively. Particularly high incidence of 3.1 was recorded in northern Croatia. TBE displayed a seasonal pattern, peaking in June and July. Moderate negative correlations were observed between TBE acute cases and winter temperatures from December to February (r=-0.461; p=0.062), relative rodent abundance (r=-0.414; p=0.098) and yearly precipitation from one year before (r=-0.401; p=0.123). Considerable efforts are needed to understand the impact on TBE incidence to improve disease prevention.

Understanding the factors that contribute to slope failures, such as soil saturation, is essential for mitigating rainfall-induced landslides. Cost-effective capacitive soil moisture sensors have the po-tential to be widely implemented across multiple sites for landslide early warning systems. How-ever, these sensors need to be calibrated for specific applications to ensure high accuracy in readings. In this study, a soil-specific calibration was performed in a laboratory setting to integrate the soil moisture sensor with an automatic monitoring system using the Internet of Things (IoT). This re-search aims to evaluate a low-cost soil moisture sensor (SKU:SEN0193) and develop calibration equations for the purpose of slope model experiment under artificial rainfall condition using silica sand. The results indicate that a polynomial function is the best fit, with a coefficient of determi-nation (R²) ranging from 0.92 to 0.98 and a root mean square error (RMSE) ranging from 1.17 to 2.67. The calibration equation was validated through slope model experiments, with soil samples taken from the model after the experiment finished. Overall, the moisture content readings from the sensors showed approximately a 10% deviation from the actual moisture content. The findings suggest that the cost-effective capacitive soil moisture sensors has the potential to be used for the development of landslide early warning system.

In the present study, we introduce the two dimensional Chlodovsky type Bernstein operators based on (p,q)−integer. We examine approximation properties of our new operator by the help of Korovkin-type theorem. Further, we present the local approximation properties and establish the rates of convergence by means of the modulus of continuity and the Lipschitz type maximal function. Also, we give a Voronovskaja type theorem for this operators. And, we investigate weighted approximation properties of these operators and estimate rate of convergence in the same space. Finally, with the help of Maple, illustrative graphics show the rate of convergence of these operators to certain functions . The optimization of approximation speeds by operators during system control provides significant improvements in stability and performance. As a result, the control and modeling of dynamic systems become more efficient and effective through innovative methods. These advancements in the fields of modeling fractional differential equations and control theory offer substantial benefits to both modeling and optimization processes, expanding the range of applications in these areas.

This article advances the discourse on sustainable and energy-efficient software by examining the performance and energy efficiency of intelligent algorithms within the framework of green and sustainable computing. Building on previous research, it explores the theoretical implications of Bremermann's Limit on efforts to enhance computer performance through more extensive methods. The study presents an empirical investigation into heuristic methods for search and optimisation, demonstrating the energy efficiency of various algorithms in both simple and complex tasks. It also identifies key factors influencing the energy consumption of algorithms and their potential impact on computational processes. Furthermore, the article discusses cognitive concepts and their interplay with computational intelligence, highlighting the role of cognition in the evolution of intelligent algorithms. The conclusion offers insights into the future directions of research in this area, emphasising the need for continued exploration of energy-efficient computing methodologies.

Digital twins are gaining in popularity for simulating complex natural and urban environments. In this context, accurate segmentation of objects within 3D urban environments is of crucial importance. The aim of this project is to develop a methodology for extracting buildings from textured 3D meshes. To this end, PicassoNet-II, a semantic segmentation architecture is employed. The methodology also incorporates Markov field-based contextual analysis to assess post-segmentation features. In addition, building instantiation is performed using cluster analysis algorithms. Training this model to fit various datasets requires a large amount of annotated data, both from Quebec City, Canada, and from simulated data. Experimental results show that the use of simulated data improves segmentation accuracy, and the DBScan algorithm proves effective in extracting isolated buildings. This project paves the way for improved applications in 3D urban modeling, offering opportunities in fields ranging from urban planning to resource management. The positive results with simulated data reinforce the impact of this research on improving digital models of our ever-changing urban environments.

Pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers worldwide, necessitates improved therapeutics due to its low survival rate (12% in 5 years) and typically late-stage diagnosis [1]. This malignancy tends to present asymptomatically until advanced stages, leading to high rates of metastasis and limiting surgical options [2]. Genetic mutations in key genes like KRAS, CDKN2A, TP53, and SMAD4 are central to pancreatic cancer pathogenesis, driving uncontrolled cell proliferation and making treatment difficult [3]. Current treatment modalities include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and emerging immunotherapies. Surgery, particularly the Whipple procedure, offers the only potential cure but is applicable in just 15-20% of cases due to the late diagnosis [4]. Chemotherapy, though commonly used, offers limited long-term survival benefits [5]. Radiation therapy has seen advancements with techniques like stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), which shows promise in reducing toxicity and improving outcomes [6] . Immunotherapy, particularly mRNA vaccines, has demonstrated potential in prolonging recurrence-free survival (>18 months), especially when combined with traditional therapies (13.4 months with surgical resection alone) [7] . Combinations of different treatments have been found to be effective. The challenge of early pancreatic cancer diagnosis mirrors the difficulty of disease management. Prophylactic immunotherapies, like vaccines, could offer a crucial breakthrough for prevention and recurrence reduction. As pancreatic cancer remains difficult to treat effectively, continued research and development in preventative and therapeutic strategies are essential to improving outcomes.

In an outstanding article published in 2008, Suzuki obtained a nice generalization of the Banach contraction principle from which derived a characterization of metric completeness. Although Suzuki’s theorem has been successfully generalized and extended in several directions and contexts, we here show by means of a simple example that the problem of achieving, in an obvious way, its full extension to the framework of w-distances does not have an emphatic response. Motivated by this fact we introduce the concept of presymmetric w-distance on metric spaces, we give some properties and examples of this new structure and show that it provides a reasonable setting to obtain a real and hardly forced w-distance generalization of Suzuki’s theorem. This is realized in our main result, which is a fixed point theorem that involves presymmetric w-distances and certain contractions of Suzuki-type. We also discuss the relationship between our main result and the well-known w-distance full generalization of the Banach contraction principle, due to Suzuki and Takahashi. Connected to this approach we prove another fixed point result that compare with our main result through some examples. Finally, we state a characterization of metric completeness by using our fixed point results.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs) are environmental pollutants with a great persistence, capacity of bioaccumulation, and well known important toxic effects in humans and animals. Incinerators of hazardous, municipal and medical waste, chlorine bleaching of paper pulp, cement plants, and the traffic of motor vehicles are the most frequent emission sources of these compounds. The diet, followed at a great distance by inhalation, is generally the main way of human exposure to PCDD/Fs. Human biomonitoring is of a great importance to prevent potential adverse effects derived from exposure to chemicals such as PCDD/Fs. In relation to this, blood is among the most used biological monitors. In the current review, we have summarized the recent information (2000-2009) published in the scientific literature (databases: Scopus and PubMed) on the concentrations of PCDD/Fs in blood samples of non-occupationally exposed populations, as well as in some groups of occupationally exposed individuals. We have revised a number of studies conducted in various African American, Asian and European countries, and Australia. Unfortunately, the information is quite limited. No data are available for most countries over the world. Based on the results here reviewed –where available- the current health risks for the general populations do not seem to be of concern. Moreover, taking into account the important reductions observed in the levels of PCDD/Fs in foodstuffs, new decreases in the concentrations of PCDD/Fs in blood -and other biological tissues- are very probable in the immediate years.

The purpose of this article is to study a proposal for image processing and machine learning techniques to detect the pest Aleurothrixus floccosus in citrus in the area of Pedregal de Arequipa, Peru. Thus, in the collection of images a type of simple random sampling is adopted for the decrease of the bias in different citrus trees alternating and extracting leaves from the plantation also applying image processing techniques for noise reduction and edge smoothing, segmentation for the detection of the target and using machine learning algorithms that aims to perform the classification of the images, a methodology for the detection of the white fly or Aleurothrixus floccosus is achieved. It is necessary to understand that in the development of the article, it was possible to identify three stages of the pest in the plant, these being the presence of yellow areas, leaf rolling, and secretion of melase, likewise in the process it was possible to obtain a sample of 1200 images.

With the rapid developments that have been made in computer vision and computer technology, semantic segmentation of high-resolution images has emerged as a mainstream and challenging task. The, segmentation of water areas remains a complex task due to the similar features between water areas or between water areas and other land objects. Meanwhile, since coastlines and riverbanks are typically presented in irregular shapes, it is difficult to obtain the categories of pixels at boundaries. This paper proposed the use of a Water-Land Boundary Attention Network (WLBANet) to improve the accuracy of pixels at boundaries between water and land. This network also reinforced the performance of contextual information extraction into distinguishing between water areas and other land objects. To prove the validity of this proposed network, WLBANet was performed on the Water Land Dataset (WLD), which is also by this paper, and which contains water areas and other land objects categories. The results demonstrates that the proposed method has significant effectiveness.

A crucial component for developing an automated speaker or speech recognition system is voice preprocessing, which filters unwanted noise and detects the speech part. This study aimed to develop a computerized model to remove background noise and improve signal quality for future applications. This model was developed on a large longitudinal dataset containing varying real-world noise and validated on both a public dataset and a locally collected test dataset in different environments. An overall voice pre-processing pipeline is presented in this study, including denoising, segmentation, feature extraction, and ease of storage. The backbone of the denoising model is a Kalman filter, where the parameters were obtained from a grid search method; the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was used as the performance metric. Also, the segmentation was done to remove the pauses from the audio signal before the feature extraction. Finally, the data was stored as a template with the most common features. The SNR result suggested that the Kalman filter-based proposed method performed successfully across diverse datasets. Thus, this model provides a robust and adaptable solution for real-world scenarios and also ensures the data storing quality for future applications.

Open-vocabulary learning has recently gained prominence as a means to enable image segmentation for arbitrary categories based on textual descriptions. This advancement has extended the applicability of segmentation systems to a broader range of generally purpose scenarios. However, current methods often revolve around specialized architectures and parameters tailored to specific segmentation tasks, resulting in a fragmented landscape of segmentation models. In response to these challenges, we introduce OVAMTSeg, a versatile framework designed for Open-Vocabulary and Multitask Image Segmentation. OVAMTSeg harnesses adaptive prompt learning to empower the model to capture category-sensitive concepts, enhancing its robustness across diverse multi-task and scenario contexts. Text prompts are employed to effectively capture semantic and contextual features of the text, while cross-attention and cross-modal interactions enable the fusion of image and text features. Furthermore, a transformer-based decoder is incorporated for dense prediction. Extensive experimental results underscore the effectiveness of OVAMTSeg, showcasing its state-of-the-art performance and superior generalization capabilities across three segmentation tasks. Notable achievements include a 47.5 mIoU in referring expression segmentation, 51.6 mIoU on Pascal-VOC with four unseen classes, 46.6 mIoU on Pascal-Context in zero-shot segmentation, 65.9 mIoU on Pascal-5i, and 35.7 mIoU on COCO-20i datasets for one-shot segmentation.

Large datasets play a crucial role in the progression of surgical robotics, facilitating advancements in the fields of surgical task recognition and automation. Moreover, public datasets enable the comparative analysis of various algorithms and methodologies, thereby assessing their effectiveness and performance. The ROSMA (Robotics Surgical Maneuvers) dataset provides 206 trials of common surgical training tasks performed with the da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK). In this work, we extend ROSMA dataset with two annotated subsets: ROSMAT24, which contains bounding box annotations for instrument detection, and ROSMAG40, which contains high and low level gesture annotations. We propose an annotation method that provides independent labels for the right-handed tool and the left-handed tool. For instrument identification, we validate our proposal with a YOLOv4 model in two experimental scenarios. We demonstrate the generalization capabilities of the network to detect instruments in unseen scenarios. For gesture segmentation, we propose two label categories: high-level annotations that describe gestures at a maneuvers level, and low-level annotations that describe gestures at a fine-grain level. To validate this proposal, we have designed a recurrent neural network based on a bidirectional long-short term memory layer. We present results for four cross-validation experimental setups, reaching up to a 77.35% mAP.

Oncology has emerged as a crucial field of study and treatment in the domain of medicine. Computed tomography has gained widespread adoption as a radiological modality for the identification and characterisation of pathologies, particularly in oncology, enabling precise identification of affected organs and tissues. However, achieving accurate liver segmentation in computed tomography scans remains a challenge due to the presence of artefacts and the varying densities of soft tissues and adjacent organs. This paper compares artificial intelligence algorithms and traditional medical image processing techniques to assist radiologists in liver segmentation on computed tomography scans, and evaluates their accuracy and efficiency. It is noteworthy that although studies have been conducted on liver segmentation in computed tomography scans, they often lack an intuitive and visual component that allows healthcare professionals to manipulate and observe the results obtained, thereby limiting interaction with the outcomes. From the literature review, challenges such as under-segmentation, over-segmentation, and poor boundary detection, as well as the selection of methods to improve the accuracy and efficiency of liver segmentation in computed tomography scanners, are highlighted as needs to be addressed. The importance of future research in understanding the essential features for the study, generating more datasets, improving segmentation efficiency, and developing lightweight artificial intelligence frameworks for liver segmentation is outlined.

Iberian ham, a traditional Spanish meat product, is renowned for its unique nutritional and sensory attributes, garnering widespread appreciation both domestically and internationally [1]. It is one of the most outstanding Spanish gastronomic treasures, with very special nutritional and sensory properties that make it highly appreciated throughout the world [2]. Recent trends indicate a notable surge in its consumption, a pattern projected to persist [3]. For an enhanced online shopping experience, understanding the specific characteristics and requirements of various consumer segments is crucial. This study aims to scrutinize national Iberian ham consumption patterns and, through survey methodologies, discern the preferences and needs of online consumers purchasing whole Iberian hams. The subsequent cluster analysis will empower suppliers with insights to pinpoint business prospects and craft segment-specific online marketing strategies.

Machine learning models facilitate the search for non-linear relationships when modeling hydrological processes, but they are equally effective for automation at the data preparation stage. The tasks whose automation was analyzed consisted in estimating changes in the roughness of a mountain streambed and the extent of floods from images. The Segment Anything Model (SAM) developed this year by Meta was used for this purpose. Images from many years from the Wielka Puszcza mountain stream located in the Polish Carpathians were used as the only input data. The model was not additionally trained for the described tasks. The model can be run in several modes, but the two most appropriate were used in this study. The first one is available in the form of a web application, while the second one is available in the form of a Jupyter notebook run in the Google Colab environment. Both methods do not require specialized knowledge and can be used by virtually any hydrologist. In the roughness estimation task, the average Intersection over Union (IoU) ranges from 0.55 for grass to 0.82 for shrubs/trees. Ultimately, it was possible to estimate the roughness coefficient of the mountain streambed between 0.027 and 0.059 based solely on image data. In the task of estimation of the flood extent, when selecting appropriate images, one can expect IoU at the level of at least 0.94, which seems to be an excellent result considering that SAM is a general-purpose segmentation model. It can therefore be concluded that SAM model can be a useful tool for a hydrologist.

The integration of robotics and image processing has led to the realization of robot autonomy in dynamic environments through the provision of visual feedback. This paper presents the application of parallel and open-link robots in palletizing and shape drawing tasks as enhanced by visual feedback from image processing. In determining the set of joint angles that could be used to reach the desired position and orientation of the end effector, the geometric approach in which the spatial geometry of the robotic arms was decomposed into several plane geometry problems was employed. Image processing techniques were used to enhance the performance of the robotic manipulators. In one approach, Color-based segmentation was used to distinguish between different objects in the workspace by using predefined color markers as references in the L*a*b color space. Classification of each pixel in the workspace image was then done by calculating the Euclidean distance between that pixel and a predefined color marker. A second approach employed Edge detection to identify the boundaries of objects within the workspace image by employing the Hough Transform mathematical model to detect the abrupt changes in the image brightness pixel-wise. The pixel locations from Hough were then sorted sequentially to outline the detected object. The integration of image processing with the robotic tasks was expected to improve the precise detection of the position of objects as well as the outline of geometric shapes. The incorporation of visual feedback allowed for dynamic robot manipulation in which prior knowledge of the workspace was not requisite. This led to improved pick and place as well as shape detection as applied in palletizing and shape drawing tasks actuated by the parallel and serial link manipulators, respectively.

Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based algorithms have revolutionized the medical image segmentation processes. Thus, the precise segmentation of organs and their lesions may contribute to an efficient diagnostics process and a more effective selection of targeted therapies as well as increasing the effectiveness of the training process. Thus, AI may contribute to the automatization of the image scan segmentation process and increase the quality of the resulting 3D objects, which may lead to the generation of more realistic virtual objects. In this paper, we focus on the AI-based solutions applied in the medical image scan segmentation, and intelligent visual-content generation, i.e. computer-generated three-dimensional (3D) images in the context of Extended Reality (XR). We consider different types of neural networks used with a special emphasis on the learning rules applied, taking into account algorithm accuracy and performance, as well as open data availability. This paper also attempts to summarize the current development of AI-based segmentation methods in medical imaging and intelligent visual content generation that are applied in XR. Finally, this paper concludes with possible developments and open challenges in AI application in Extended Reality-based solutions. Finally, the future lines of research and development directions of Artificial Intelligence applications both in medical image segmentation and Extended reality-based medical solutions are discussed.

One of the most leading causes of death worldwide is Colorectal cancer(CRC). Polyp segmentation is the most important detected measure for preventing CRC. However, there is still a missing rate for diminutive polyps and multiple ones. In order to solve the phenomenon, we propose to introduce auxiliary attention module(AAM) that can enhance the learning of features related to multiple and diminutive polyps by focusing more on the located and detailed information. Meanwhile, we design to decrease missed rate of multiple and diminutive polyps by implementing an area adaptive loss(AAL) which adapts the weight according to the area and the number of polyps. Our proposed novel AAM and AAL concentrates on training with hard examples and localized information. To evaluate the effectiveness and generalization ability of our proposed model, We utilize three different datasets of variable sizes and a cross dataset. Our proposed method achieves the best results on the Kvasir-SEG dataset, the CVC-ClinicDB dataset and the cross dataset, particularly for the Kvasir-Sessile dataset consisting of small,flat and diminutive polyps. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed DoubleAANet surpass the performance of all existing state-of-the-art segmentation methods.

While there are several ways to identify customer behaviors, few extract this value from information already in a database, much less extract relevant characteristics. This paper presents the development of a prototype using the recency, frequency, and monetary attributes for customer segmentation of a retail database. For this purpose, the standard K-means, K-medoids, and MiniBatch K-means were evaluated. The standard K-means clustering algorithm was more appropriate for data clustering than other algorithms as it remained stable until solutions with 6 clusters. The evaluation of the clusters’ quality was obtained through the internal validation indexes: Silhouette, Calinski Harabasz, and Davies Bouldin. Once consensus was not obtained, three external validation indexes were applied: global stability, stability per cluster, and segment-level stability across solutions. Six customer segments were obtained, identified by their unique behavior: Lost customers, disinterested customers, recent customers, less recent customers, loyal customers, and best customers. Their behavior was evidenced and analyzed, indicating trends and preferences.

This paper explores the potential of using the SAM segmentator to enhance the segmentation capability of known methods. SAM is a promptable segmentation system that offers zero-shot generalization to unfamiliar objects and images, eliminating the need for additional training. The open-source nature of SAM on GitHub allows for easy access and implementation. In our experiments, we aim to improve the segmentation performance by providing SAM with checkpoints extracted from the masks produced by DeepLabv3+, then merging the segmentation masks provided by these two networks. Additionally, we examine the \enquote{oracle} method (as upper bound baseline performance), where segmentation masks are inferred only by SAM with checkpoints extracted from ground truth. In addition, we tested in the CAMO datasets an ensemble of PVTv2 transformers; combining the ensemble and SAM yields state-of-the-art performance in that dataset. The results of our study provide valuable insights into the potential of incorporating the SAM segmentator into existing segmentation techniques. We release with this paper the open-source implementation of our method.

Plant phenotype plays an important role in crop breeding and planting. Leaf phenotype is an important part of plant phenotype. In order to analyze the leaf phenotype, the target leaf is required to be segmented from the complex background image. In this paper, an automatic soybean leaf segmentation method based on object detection and interactive segmentation models is proposed. Firstly, the Libra R-CNN object detection algorithm is used to detect all soybean leaves in the image. Then, based on the idea that the target soybean leaf is located in the center of the image and the area is large, the detection bounding box of the target leaf is selected. In order not to destroy the segmentation result, the bounding box is optimized to completely enclose the whole leaf. Finally, according to the optimized bounding box, the prior channels of foreground and background are constructed using Gaussian model. The two channels together with the original image are as the input of the interactive object segmentation with inside-outside guidance model to segment the target soybean leaf. A large number of qualitative and quantitative experimental results show that the method has high segmentation accuracy and strong generalization capacity.

Sea ice extraction and segmentation of remote sensing images is the basis for sea ice monitoring. Machine learning-based image segmentation methods rely on manual sampling and require complex feature extraction. Deep-learning semantic segmentation methods have the advantages of high efficiency, intelligence, and automation. Sea ice segmentation using deep learning methods faces the following problems: in terms of datasets, the high cost of sea ice image label production leads to fewer datasets for sea ice segmentation; in terms of image quality, remote sensing image noise and Severe weather conditions affects image quality, which affects the ac-curacy of sea ice extraction. To address the quantity and quality of the dataset, this study used multiple data augmentation methods for data expansion. To improve the semantic segmentation accuracy, the SC-U2-Net network was constructed using multi-scale inflation convolution and a multi-layer Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) attention mechanism for the U2-Net network. The experiments showed that (1) data augmentation solved the problem of an insuffi-cient number of training samples to a certain extent and improved the accuracy of image seg-mentation. (2) This study designed a multilevel Gaussian noise data augmentation scheme to improve the network's ability to resist noise interference and achieve a more accurate segmenta-tion of images with different degrees of noise pollution. (3) The inclusion of a multi-scale inflation perceptron and multi-layer CBAM attention mechanism improved the ability of U2-Net network feature extraction and enhanced the model accuracy and generalization ability.

Fractures of the talar neck and body are associated with spine fractures and scoliosis deformity, which affect cosmetic appearance and cause difficulty in ambulation. The implant design for talus surgery is thriving as a functional alternative in case of severe talar destruction, focusing on segmentation and reconstruction of the talus’s shape. However, manual segmentation of the talus is time-consuming and subjective. In this study we exploited the automatic segmentation framework to efficiently train a deep learning-based model to accurately segment the talus based on computed tomography imaging. We developed three model configurations with nnU-Net and investigated their Dice similarity coefficients (DSC) and 95% Hausdorff distances (HD95) for talus segmentation on a CT image dataset. The three configurations performed well (DSC > 0.95, HD95 < 0.6). When tested on the same samples, one of the configurations was more efficient while ensuring higher accuracy. We propose to focus on talus anatomic variations with increasing age based on this framework and apply it to clinical trials at the next stage.

Convolutional neural network architectures have become increasingly complex, which has improved the performance slowly on well-known benchmark datasets in the recent years. In this research, we have analyzed the true need for such complexity. We have introduced G-Net light, a lightweight modified GoogleNet with improved filter count per layer to reduce feature overlaps and complexity. Additionally, by limiting the amount of pooling layers in the proposed architecture, we have exploited the skip connections to minimize the spatial information loss. The investigations on the proposed architecture are evaluated on three retinal vessel segmentation publicly available datasets. The proposed G-Net light outperforms other vessel segmentation architectures by reducing the number of trainable parameters..

Extensive growth in the volume of irregular brain cells is known as brain tumor. Human brain is surrounded by stiff skull. There are various issues that occur due to the growth of any tumor inside this restricted space. The malignant and benign are two main categories of the brain tumor. The skull is pressurized to enlarge from inside in case of growth of any benign or malignant tumor. This tumor leads to harm in brain and it may be dangerous to life also. The brain tumor is divided into two kinds - primary or secondary. The brain tumor detection techniques have various phases. In this paper, comparative study of CNN with GLCM approach and superpixel based spectral clustering is done tumor. This work takes into account metrics like accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for drawing the comparison between both the techniques.

Segmentation of brain tumor images is a major research topic in medical imaging to have a refined detection and understanding of abnormal masses in the brain. This paper proposes a new segmentation method, consisting of three main steps, to detect brain lesions using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the first step, the parts of the image delineating the skull bone are removed to exclude insignificant data. In the second step, which is the main contribution of this study, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is applied to detect the block that contains the brain lesions. The fitness function, used to determine the best block among all candidate blocks, is based on a two-way fixed-effects analysis of variance (ANOVA). In the last step of the algorithm, the K-means segmentation method is used in the lesion block to classify it as tumor or not. A thorough evaluation of the proposed algorithm is performed using the MRI database provided by the Kouba imaging center in Algiers, Algeria. Estimates of the selected fitness function are first compared to those based on the sum-of-absolute-differences (SAD) dissimilarity criterion and demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the ANOVA. The performance of the optimized brain tumor segmentation algorithm is then compared to the results of several state-of-the-art techniques, including fuzzy C-means, K-means, Otsu thresholding, local thresholding, and watershed segmentation. The results obtained using Dice coefficient, Jaccard distance, correlation coefficient, and root mean square error (RMSE) measurements demonstrate the superiority of the proposed optimized segmentation algorithm over equivalent techniques.

Orbital fractures are a common finding in facial trauma and serious complications may arise when orbital reconstruction is not done properly. The virtual planning can be used to manufacture patient-specific titanium orbital implants (PSI) through the process of selective laser melting. This method is currently considered the most accurate technique for orbital reconstruction. Even with the most accurate tehniques of bone reconstruction, there are still situations where enophthalmos is present after reconstruction which may be produced by intraorbital soft tissue atrophy. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the orbital soft tissue after postraumatic reconstruction of the orbital walls fractures. 10 patients diagnosed with unilateral orbital fractures were included in this study. A CT scan of the head region with thin slices (0.6mm) and soft and bone tissue windows was done. After data processing, the STL files were exported and the intraorbital fat tissue volume and the muscular tissue volume were masured. The volumes of affected orbit tissues were compared with the volumes of the healthy orbit tissues for each patient. Our findings conclude that a higher or a lower grade of fat and muscular tissue loss is present in all cases of reconstructed orbital fractures.

Anomaly detection and segmentation aim at distinguishing abnormal images from normal images and further localizing the anomalous regions. Feature reconstruction based method has become one of the mainstream methods for this task. This kind of method has two assumptions: (1) The features extracted by neural network is a good representation of the image. (2) The autoencoder solely trained on the features of normal images cannot reconstruct the features of anomalous regions well. But these two assumptions are hard to meet. In this paper, we propose a new anomaly segmentation method based on feature reconstruction. Our approach mainly consists of two parts: (1) We use a pretrained vision transformer (ViT) to extract the features of the input image. (2) We design a self-attention autoencoder to reconstruct the features. We regard that the self-attention operation which has a global receptive field is beneficial to the methods based on feature reconstruction both in feature extraction and reconstruction. The experiments show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches for anomaly segmentation on the MVTec dataset. It is both effective and time-efficient.

Human beatboxing is a vocal art making use of speech organs to produce vocal drum sounds and imitate musical instruments. Beatbox sound classification is a current challenge that can be used for automatic database annotation and music-information retrieval. In this study, a large-vocabulary humanbeatbox sound recognition system was developed with an adaptation of Kaldi toolbox, a widely-used tool for automatic speech recognition. The corpus consisted of eighty boxemes, which were recorded repeatedly by two beatboxers. The sounds were annotated and transcribed to the system by means of a beatbox specific morphographic writing system (Vocal Grammatics). The image processing techniques plays vital role on image Acquisition, image pre-processing, Clustering, Segmentation and Classification techniques with different kind of images such as Fruits, Medical, Vehicle and Digital text images etc. In this study the various images to remove unwanted noise and performs enhancement techniques such as contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization, Laplacian and Harr filtering, unsharp masking, sharpening, high boost filtering and color models then the Clustering algorithms are useful for data logically and extract pattern analysis, grouping, decision-making, and machine-learning techniques and Segment the regions using binary, K-means and OTSU segmentation algorithm. It Classifying the images with the help of SVM and K-Nearest Neighbour(KNN) Classifier to produce good results for those images.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition is a computer vision technology that provides a way to recognize the vehicles number plates without direct human intervention. Developing Automatic Number Plate Recognition methodologies is a widely studied topic among the computer vision community to increase the accuracy rates. Although there are many studies, the research in character segmentation and improving the recognition accuracy remains limited. In this study, a new methodology is proposed to reduce the character recognition errors of Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems. To achieve this, it will be determined whether the characters are letters or numbers, and the number plates will be expressed in the form of letters - digit. The method suggested for segmenting blobs correctly worked with an accuracy of 96.12% on the test dataset. The method suggested for generating letter-digit expression for the number plates correctly worked with an accuracy of 99.28% on the test dataset. The proposed methodology can work only on Turkish number plates. In the future studies, the proposed methodology can be expanded by using the number plate dataset of a different country.

White matter hyperintensity (WMH) has been considered the primary biomarker from small-vessel cerebrovascular disease to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and has been reported for its correlation of brain structural changes. To perform WMH related analysis with brain structure, both T1-weighted (T1w) and (Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery(FLAIR) are required. However, in a clinical situation, it is limited to obtain 3D T1w and FLAIR images simultaneously. Also, the most of brain segmentation technique supports 3D T1w only. Therefore, we introduced the semi-supervised learning method that can perform brain segmentation using FLAIR image only. Our method achieved a dice overlap score of 0.86 for brain tissue segmentation on FLAIR, with the relative volume difference between T1w and FLAIR segmentation under 4.8%, which is just as reliable as the segmentation done by its paired T1w image. We believe our semi-supervised learning method has a great potential to be used to other MRI sequences and provide encouragement to people who seek brain tissue segmentation from a non-T1w image.

Automated weeding is an important research area in agrorobotics. Weeds can be removed mechanically or with the precise usage of herbicides. Deep Learning techniques achieved state of the art results in many computer vision tasks, however their deployment on low-cost mobile computers is still challenging. These paper present an advanced version of the system presented in [1]. The described system contains several novelties, compared both with its previous version and related work. It is a part of a project of the automatic weeding machine, developed by Warsaw University of Technology and MCMS Warka Ltd. The obtained model reaches satisfying accuracy at over 10~FPS on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ computer. It was tested for four different plant species at different growth stadiums and lighting conditions. The system performing semantic segmentation is based on Convolutional Neural Networks. Its custom architecture mixes U-Net, MobileNets, DenseNet and ResNet concepts. Amount of needed manual ground truth labels was significantly decreased by the usage of knowledge distillation process, learning final model to mimic an ensemble of complex models on the large database of unlabeled data. Further decrease of the inference time was obtained by two custom modifications: in the usage of separable convolutions in DenseNet block and in the number of channels in each layer. In the authors’ opinion, described novelties can be easily transferred to other agrorobotics tasks.

Forest certification is considered a viable market-based policy instrument to promote forest sustainability. It has an important role of play in meeting the objective of modern forestry development in China, which is to sustain ecological and environmental benefits of forests. To understand differences in attitudes, opinions, and interests in forest certification, this study segmented respondents of a landowner’s survey in Shandong, China based on their level of interest in participating in forest certification under different program requirements. Multivariate cluster analysis revealed three distinct groups: likely-, potential-, and unlikely-landowners. We further examined the heterogeneity of these groups in terms of their demographics, ownership characteristics, management objectives, and perceived benefits and challenges with adopting forest certification. The results suggested the necessity of differentiating landowners in formulating and designing specific motivation-based incentives and tailor outreach efforts and communication strategies to improve their interests in forest certification. Findings are useful and interesting to forest policymakers interested in promoting forest certification among landowners in China and other countries facing similar circumstances.

Identifying the total number of fruits on trees has long been of interest in agricultural crop estimation work. Yield prediction of fruits in practical environment is one of the hard and significant tasks to obtain better results in crop management system to achieve more productivity with regard to moderate cost. Utilized color vision in machine vision system to identify citrus fruits, and estimated yield information of the citrus grove in-real time. Fruit recognition algorithms based on color features to estimate the number of fruit. In the current research work, some low complexity and efficient image analysis approach was proposed to count yield fruits image in the natural scene. Semi automatic segmentation and yield calculation of fruit based on shape analysis is presented. Color and shape analysis was utilized to segment the images of different fruits like apple, pomegranate obtained under different lighting conditions. First the input sectional tree image was converted from RGB colour space into the colour space transform (i.e., YUV, YIQ, or YCbCr). The resultant image was then applied to the algorithm for fruit segmentation. After it is applied Morphological Operations which is enhanced image then execute Blob counting method which identify the object and count the number of it. Accuracy of this algorithm used in this thesis is 82.21% for images that have been scanned.

The earthquake alert of the early warning systems is based on the delay that the S waves have in reference to the P waves and on the interpretation of the P waves’ specific parameters. One of the most used parameters for estimating the moment magnitude of an earthquake is the characteristic period measured in the first 3 seconds of the appearance of the P wave. The typical method determines the characteristic period in the time domain, based on the velocity wave and the displacement wave. In the present work, we present a method for estimating the frequency of the characteristic period. This method includes zero padding of the P wave sequence, conversion of the extended sequence from the time domain to the frequency domain, the identification of local frequency maxima and the calculation of the weighted average of the frequency based on the identified maxima. Tests conducted on synthetic signals, as well as standard deviation evaluation tests for simultaneous recordings on several stations, reveal better performance to the usual method.

Cell migration crucial contributor to metastasis, a critical process associated with the mortality of cancer patients. The initiation of metastasis is triggered by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), along with the changes of the expression of EMT marker proteins. Inflammation plays a significant role in carcinogenesis and metastasis. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a typical inflammatory agent, promoted the generation of superoxide through the activation of p-Tyr42 RhoA, Rho-dependent kinase 2 (ROCK2) and the phosphorylation of p47phox. In addition, p-Tyr42 RhoA activated phospholipase D1 (PLD1), with PLD1 and phosphatidic acid (PA) being involved in superoxide production. PA also regulated the expression of EMT maker proteins. Consequently, we have identified MHY9 (Miosin IIA, NMIIA) as a PA-binding protein in response to LPS. MYH9 also contributed cell migration and the alteration of the expression of EMT marker proteins. P-Tyr42 RhoA, PLD1 and MYH9 associated to form a complex, which was distributed in both the cytosol and nucleus. In addition, we have found that p-Tyr42 RhoA and PLD1 associated with the ZEB1 promoter. Taken together, we propose that p-Tyr42 RhoA and PLD1, responsible for producing PA, and PA-bound MYH9 are involved in the regulation of ZEB1 expression, thereby promoting cell migration.

Abstract: (1) Background: Surgery is the best curative option for Gastric Cancer (GC). However, morbimortality associated with surgery still a significant problem. Thus, it is essential to determine the preoperative surgical risk, to optimize outcomes in higher risk patients. (2) Methods: Patients who underwent curative gastrectomy between January 2010 and December 2013 were included, obtaining a sample of 131 patients, and the acuity of the scales understudy was evaluated. The predictive power of the scales was evaluated through calibration and discrimination. (3) Results and Conclusions: Regarding mortality, the scales demonstrated good calibration, with POSSUM and P-POSSUM obtaining the best O:E ratio. The scales presented good discrimination, with POSSUM showing the best result. Considering morbidity, the scales showed good calibration and discrimination. POSSUM and P-POSSUM seem to have potential in predicting morbidity and mortality when applied to the studied population, but there is a need for further studies in this area.

Emerging evidence has shown that microRNAs play pivotal roles in wound healing. MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) was previously found to upregulate in order to fulfill an anti-inflammation role for wounds. Exosomal miRNAs have been identified and explored as essential markers for diagnostic medicine. However, the role of exosomal miR-21 in wounds has yet to be well studied. In order to facilitate the early management of poorly healing wounds, we developed an easy-to-use, rapid, paper-based microfluidic-exosomal miR-21 extraction device to determine wound prognosis in a timely manner. We isolated and then quantitatively examined exosomal miR-21 in wound fluids from normal tissues, acute and chronic wounds. Eight improving wounds displayed lower levels of exosomal miR-21 expression after wound debridement. However, four instances of increased exosomal miR-21 expression levels were notably associated with patients with poor healing wounds despite aggressive wound debridement, indicating a predictive role of tissue exosomal miR-21 for wound outcome. Paper-based nucleic acid extraction device provides a rapid and user-friendly approach for evaluating exosomal miR-21 in wound fluids as a means of monitoring wounds. Our data suggest that tissue exosomal miR-21 is a reliable marker for determining current wound status.

This generalizes the notion of Smarandache group, where the group of order $\geq 2$ is a subsemigroup of a semigroup. In this paper we investigate a number of such pairings and we deduce a number of conclusions as a consequence.

Recommendations include policy reforms, increased funding, and the adoption of assistive technologies to support diverse learning needs. The research underscores the importance of a collaborative approach involving educators, parents, policymakers, and the community in creating an education system where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

The Median Based Unit Weibull is a new 2 parameter unit Weibull distribution defined on the unit interval (0,1). Estimation of the parameters using MLE encountered some problems like large variance. Using generalized method of moments (GMMs) and percentile method may ameliorate this condition. This paper introduces GMMs and the percentile methods for estimating the parameters of the new distribution with illustrative real data analysis.

Interspecific competition between mosquito larvae may affects adult vectorial capacity, potentially reducing disease transmission. It also influences population dynamics, cannibalistic and predatory behaviors. However, knowledge of interspecific competition between Ae. aegypti and Anopheles species is limited. The study examined interspecific competition between Ae. aegypti larvae and either An. arabiensis, An. gambiae, or An. funestus on individual fitness in semi-field settings. The experiments involved density combinations of 100:100, 200:0, and 0:200 (Ae. aegypti: Anopheles), reared with and without food, in small habitat (8.5 cm height × 15 cm diameter) with 0.5 litre and medium habitats (15 cm height × 35 cm diameter) with 1 litre of water. The first group received Tetramin® fish food (0.02 g), while the second group was unfed to assess cannibalism and predation. While, interspecific competition affected both genera, Anopheles species experienced greater effect, with reduced survival and delayed development, compared to Ae. aegypti. The mean wing lengths of all species were significantly small in small habitats in mixed population (p &lt; 0.001). The presence of food reduced cannibalism and predation compared to its absence. These interactions have implications for diseases transmission dynamics and can serve as biological indicators to signal the impacts of vector control interventions.

In response to a perceived epidemic of coronary heart disease, Ancel Keys introduced the lipid-heart hypothesis in 1953 which asserted that high intakes of total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol lead to atherosclerosis and that consuming less fat and cholesterol, and replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat, would reduce serum cholesterol and consequently the risk of heart disease. Keys proposed an equation that would predict the concentration of serum cholesterol (DChol.) from consumption of saturated fat (DS), polyunsaturated fat (DP), and cholesterol (DZ): ΔChol. = 1.2(2ΔS − ΔP) + 1.5ΔZ. However, the Keys equation conflated natural saturated fat and industrial trans-fat into a single parameter and considered only linoleic acid as the polyunsaturated fat. This ignored the widespread consumption of trans-fat and its effects on serum cholesterol and promoted an imbalance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. Numerous observational, epidemiological, interventional, and autopsy studies have failed to validate the Keys equation and the lipid-heart hypothesis. Nevertheless, these have been the cornerstone of national and international dietary guidelines which have focused disproportionately on heart disease and much less so on cancer and metabolic disorders, which have steadily increased since the adoption of this hypothesis.

In this paper, we define and investigate modified p-Leonardo, p-Leonardo-Lucas and p-Leonardo sequences as special cases of the generalized Leonardo sequence. We present Binet's formulas, generating functions, Simson formulas, and the summation formulas for these sequences. Moreover, we give some identities and matrices related with these sequences. Furthermore, we show that there are close relations between modified p-Leonardo, p-Leonardo-Lucas, p-Leonardo numbers and Fibonacci, Lucas numbers.

For evaluating probabilities of arbitrary random events with respect to a given multivariate probability distribution, specific techniques are of great interest. An important two-dimensional high risk limit law is the Gauss-exponential distribution whose probabilities can be dealt with based upon the Gauss-Laplace law. The latter will be considered here as an element of the newly introduced family of (p,q)-spherical distributions. Based upon a suitably defined non-Euclidean arc-length measure on (p,q)-circles we prove geometric and stochastic representations of these distributions and correspondingly distributed random vectors, respectively. These representations allow dealing with the new probability measures similarly like with elliptically contoured distributions and more general homogeneous star-shaped ones. This is demonstrated at hand of a generalization of the Box-Muller simulation method. En passant, we prove an extension of the sector and circle number functions.

In this research paper, we implement the theory of the primorial function, to develop the Supremum and Infimum bounds for the sum of (log(p))². There are, however, considerable computational difficulties related to these bounds. Therefore, from a pragmatic point of view, a set of Upper and Lower bounds had been developed to bypass this issue. Despite the increased estimation error, the Upper and Lower bounds are still considered sufficiently accurate, while facilitating an easy and fast computation of the estimate of the sum.

Polyhedral cages (p-cages) describe the geometry of some families of artificial protein cages. We identify the p-cages made out of families of equivalent polygonal faces such that the faces of 1 family has 5 neighbours and P_1 edges, while those of the other family have 6 neighbours and P_2 edges. We restrict ourselves to polyhedral cages where the holes are adjacent to at most 4 faces. We characterise all the p-cages with a deformation of the faces, compared to regular polygons, not exceeding 10%.

In our previous study of 291 cancer patients, we showed that 20% did not respond to two doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered six weeks apart. Here we investigated if psychological factors (distress, anxiety and depressive symptoms) affected antibody response and markers of vaccine activation (D-dimer) after 6 months from initial vaccination. Overall, 31 subjects (14.2%) had no antibody response at 6 months. Our analysis revealed significant predictors of vaccine failure, including stage of metastatic disease and high stress levels (OR=2.46, 95% CI, 1.05-5.77, p=0.04). Notably, nonresponders showed twice the prevalence of distress than responders (21% vs. 10%, p=0.04). Longitudinal measurements of IgG levels indicated that participants with high depressive symptoms at baseline maintained lower antibody levels over six months (p=0.003). In addition, women with high anxiety showed reduced levels of D-dimer at 6 month time (p=0.03). The data also showed that smokers and former smokers had significantly lower antibody levels than their nonsmoking counterparts (p=0.0004). At baseline, the high discomfort rate (≥5) was 34.4% in women and 23.8% in men; only men experienced an increase in median discomfort during the observation period. Moreover, higher educational level was related to increased distress among women (p=0.046). These findings underscore a critical association between elevated psychological distress and reduced immune responses to the COVID-19 vaccine, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted psychological and behavioral support within this vulnerable population.

CO₂-soluble surfactant foam systems have garnered significant attention in the fields of enhanced oil and gas recovery, environmental protection, and greenhouse gas emission reduction. This review provides a comprehensive explanation of the basic theory of CO₂-soluble surfactant foam, the mechanism of enhanced oil recovery, and the classification and application of various CO₂-soluble surfactants.The mechanism of enhanced oil recovery by CO₂-soluble surfactant foam involves the effective reduction of CO₂ fluidity, the decrease in oil-air flow ratio, and the stabilization of the displacement front. Foam plays a vital role in mitigating the issues of channeling and gravity separation often caused by simple CO₂ injection. The reduction in gas fluidity can be attributed to the increase in apparent viscosity and trapped gas fraction.Future research should prioritize the development of more efficient and environmentally-friendly CO₂-soluble surfactants. It is essential to further explore the advantages and challenges associated with their practical applications in order to maximize their potential impact.

Objectives: Cardiogenic shock [CS] is associated with a high-mortality. Suitable patients maybe successfully bridged using newer intravascular micro-axial left-ventricular assist devices [M-LVAD] for recovery or determination of definitive therapy. Methods: Between January-2020 and July-2024, 107 patients underwent placement of M-LVAD for CS. The cohort was divided into 4 groups based on their destination; group-1: 34 patients [32%] receiving transplant; group-2: 25 patients [23%] receiving durable LVAD; group-3: 42 patients [39%] bridging from post-cardiotomy CS [PCCS]; and group-4: 6 patients [5.6%] bridging decision/recovery [these were excluded from analysis]. Multivariable logistic-regression [MLR] and Cox-regression [MCR] models identified predictors of early-hospital and late mortality, with data reported as odds ratios [ORs], and hazard ratios [HRs], respectively. P<0.05 was statistically significant. Results: Complications included device-malfunction [n=6, 6%], gastrointestinal bleed [n=9, 9%], stroke [n=11, 11%]; long-term hemodialysis [n=21, 21%]. Early-hospital mortality included 13 patients [13%]: 2 in group-1, 1 in group-2 and 10 in group-3 [p=0.02]. In the MLR model, the category of cardiogenic shock requiring M-LVAD placement was statistically significant [OR=4.7 (0.9-24), P=0.05]. Patients were followed for up to 4.5-years, and 23 deaths occurred; group-1: 3 patients, group-2: 5 patients, and group-3: 15 patients [p=0.019]. At 4.5-years, actuarial survival was 90.7±5.1% in group-1, 79.2±8.3% in group-2, and 62.8%±7.7% in group-3 [P=0.01]. In the MCR model, M-LVAD category [HR=3.63 (1.03-12.9) P=0.04], and long-term postoperative dialysis [HR=3.9 (1.6-9) P=0.002], emerged as statistically significant predictors of long-term mortality. Conclusions: In cardiogenic shock, our mid-term outcomes demonstrate good survival with M-LVADs as bridge to transplant and durable LVAD, and reasonable survival as bridge to recovery following cardiotomy, reduced ECMO usage and early ambulation/rehabilitation.

Antimalarial drug resistance has become a real public health problem despite WHO measures. New sequencing technologies make it possible to investigate genomic variations associated with resistant phenotypes at the genome-wide scale. Based on the use of hemisynthetic nanopores, the PromethION technology from Oxford Nanopore Technologies can produce long-read sequences, in contrast to previous short-read technologies used as gold-standard to sequence Plasmodium. Two clones of P.falciparum (Pf3D7 and PfW2) were sequenced in long-read using the PromethION sequencer from Oxford Nanopore Technologies without genomic amplification. This made it possible to create a processing analysis pipeline for human Plasmodium with ONT Fastq only. De novo assembly revealed N50 lengths of 18,488 kb and 17,502 kb for the Pf3D7 and PfW2, respectively. The genome size was estimated at 23,235,407 base pairs for the Pf3D7 clone and 21,712,038 base pairs for the PfW2 clone. The average genome coverage depth was estimated at 787X and 653X for the Pf3D7 and PfW2 clones, respectively. This study proposes an assembly processing pipeline for the human Plasmodium genome using software’s adapted to large ONT data and the high AT percentage of Plasmodium. This search provides all the parameters, which have been optimized, for use with the software selected in the pipeline.

Early detection and precise characterization of brain tumors play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes and extending survival rates. Among neuroimaging modalities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for brain tumor diagnostics due to its ability to produce high-contrast images across a variety of sequences, each highlighting distinct tissue characteristics. This study focuses on enabling multimodal MRI sequences to advance the automatic segmentation of low-grade astrocytomas, a challenging task due to their diffuse and irregular growth patterns. A novel mutual-attention deep learning framework is proposed, which integrates complementary information from multiple MRI sequences, including T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences, to enhance the segmentation accuracy. Unlike conventional segmentation models, which treat each modality independently or simply concatenate them, our model introduces mutual attention mechanisms. This allows the network to dynamically focus on salient features across modalities by jointly learning interdependencies between imaging sequences, leading to more precise boundary delineations even in regions with subtle tumor signals. The proposed method is validated using the UCSF-PDGM dataset, which consists of 35 astrocytoma cases, presenting a realistic and clinically challenging dataset. The results demonstrate that T2w/FLAIR modalities contribute most significantly to the segmentation performance. The mutual-attention model achieves an average Dice coefficient of 0.87, outperforming traditional approaches. This study provides an innovative pathway toward improving segmentation of low-grade tumors by enabling context-aware fusion across imaging sequences. Furthermore, the study showcases the clinical relevance of integrating AI with multimodal MRI, potentially improving non-invasive tumor characterization and guiding future research in radiological diagnostics.

The growing use of drones in precision agriculture highlights the need for enhanced operational efficiency. Despite the ability of computer vision based on deep learning has made remarkable progress in the past ten years, when it comes to segmentation task on UAVs, there is always a conflict between the demand of high precision and low inference latency. Due to such a dilemma, we propose the IRB-YOLO, an efficiency model based on Inverted Residual Block, devoting to provide constructive strategies in real-time detection tasks of UAV camera. The working details of this paper are as follows: (1) This paper innovates with a IR-Block(Inverted Residual Block), integrated into a refined YOLOv8-seg structure to create IRB-YOLO. This model specializes in pixel-level classification of UAV-acquired RGB images, facilitating the creation of exact maps to guide agricultural strategies. (2)When it comes to the experiments on a Vatica dataset with any other light-weight segmentation model, IRB-YOLO achieve at least a 3.3% increase in mAP. Further validation using a diverse species dataset confirms its robust generalization. (3)Without overloading the complex attention mechanism and deeper and deeper network, a stem that incorporates efficient feature extraction components, inverted residual block, can still possess outstanding modeling capabilities. IRB-YOLO builds a bridge between academic research and edge deployment of drones, making it applicable in real-world scenarios.

Microscopic and ultra-microscopic vascular sutures are indispensable in the surgical procedures such as arm transplantation and finger reattachment. The state of the blood vessels after suturing, such as vascular patency, narrow, and blocked, determines the success rate of the operation. If we can grasp the golden window period after blood vessel suture and before muscle tissue suture to achieve accurate and objective assessment of blood vessel status, it can not only reduce medical costs but also improve social benefits. Doppler optical coherence tomography enables high-speed, high-resolution imaging of biological tissues, especially microscopic and ultra-microscopic blood vessels. Using Doppler optical coherence tomography to image the sutured blood vessels, not only the three-dimensional structure of the blood vessels, but also the blood flow information can be obtained. By extracting the contour of blood vessel wall and the contour of blood flow area, the three-dimensional shape of blood vessel can be reconstructed in three dimensions, which provides parameter support for the assessment of blood vessel status. In this work, we propose a neural network-based multi-classification deep learning model that can simultaneously and automatically extract blood vessel boundaries from Doppler OCT vessel intensity images and the contours of blood flow regions from corresponding Doppler OCT vessel phase images. Compared with the traditional random walk segmentation algorithm and cascade neural network method, the proposed model has better performance. This method is easier to realize system integration and has great potential for clinical evaluation. It is expected to be applied to the evaluation of microscopic and ultra-microscopic vascular status in microvascular anastomosis.

The fusion of global contextual information with local cropped block details is crucial for segmenting ultra-high resolution images. In this study, we introduce a novel fusion mechanism termed Global-Local Deep Fusion (GL-Deep Fusion) based on an enhanced transformer architecture, which efficiently integrates global contextual information and local details. Specifically, we propose the Global-Local Synthesis Networks (GLSNet), a dual-branch network where one branch processes the entire original image, while the other branch handles cropped local patches as input. The feature fusion of different branches in GLSNet is achieved through GL-Deep Fusion, significantly enhancing the accuracy of ultra-high resolution image segmentation. Particularly effective is GLSNet in identifying tiny overlapping items. To optimize GPU memory utilization, we meticulously design a dual-branch architecture that proficiently leverages the features it extracts, seamlessly integrating them into the enhanced transformer framework of GL-Deep Fusion. Extensive experiments conducted on challenging benchmarks, including DeepGlobe and Vaihingen datasets, demonstrate that GLSNet achieves a new state-of-the-art performance in terms of GPU memory utilization and segmentation accuracy tradeoff.

In recent years, the scientific and technological developments led to an explosion of available videos on the web, increasing the necessity of fast and effective video analysis and summarization. Video summarization methods aim to generate a synopsis by selecting the most informative parts of the video content. The user’s personal preferences, often involved in the expected results, should be taken into account in the video summaries. In this paper, we provide the first comprehensive survey on personalized video summarization relevant to the techniques and datasets used. In this context, we classify and review personalized video summary techniques based on the type of personalized summary, on criteria, on the video domain, on the source of information, on the time of summarization, and on the machine learning technique. Depending on the type of methodology used by the personalized video summarization techniques for the summary production process, we classify the techniques into five major categories, which are feature-based video summarization, key frame selection, shot selection-based approach, video summarization using trajectory analysis, and personalized video summarization using clustering. We also compare personalized video summarization methods and present 37 datasets used to evaluate personalized video summarization methods. Finally, we analyze opportunities and challenges in the field and suggest innovative research lines.

Semantic segmentation of high-resolution remote sensing images provides detailed and precise feature information, playing a pivotal role in decision-making and analysis in sectors such as water management, agriculture, military, and environmental protection. However, most methods merely combine features from various branches directly, without a mechanism for spatial location feature screening, and treat all extracted features as equally important. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel spatially adaptive interaction network (SAINet) for dynamic interaction across different features in remote sensing semantic segmentation task. Specifically, we propose a spatial refined module that leverages local context information to filter spatial locations and extract salient regions. Following this, we introduce an innovative spatial interaction module that uses a spatial adaptive modulation mechanism to dynamically select and allocate spatial position weights. This facilitates interaction between local salient areas and global information, allowing the network to focus more on relevant regions. This flexible approach enables the network to capture more informative features, thereby enhancing segmentation accuracy. Experiments conducted on the DeepGlobe, Vaihingen, and Potsdam public datasets confirm the effectiveness and capability of SAINet. Our code and models will be publicly available

Femur length (FL) is a biometric measurement of ultrasound images used to identify the growth patterns and abnormalities of the foetus. Automatic segmentation of FL can improve the efficiency and convenience of inexperienced users. The femur region in a low-cost ultrasound image is a small area with low contrast intensity compared with the non-femur region. This study proposed a fully automated framework for segmenting and measuring the FL in a portable ultrasound image. We utilized statistical modeling, employing Gaussian mixture functions for thresholding to extract the femur area from the background. We also used the localizing region-based active contour method to segment the femur region accurately. We also proposed a refinement step in this framework to obtain a more accurate femur area in the ultrasound image. Because the length and position of the femur are the main factors affecting foetal biometric measurement accuracy, we not only evaluated segmentation results using region-based methods, such as sensitivity, specificity, and dice similarity. We also applied the FL measurement approach to evaluate the angle and length accuracy relative to the ground truth. In terms of region-based segmentation performance, the proposed method provided the best average performance with a sensitivity of 0.78, specificity of 0.87, and dice similarity of 0.81. For FL measurement performance, the proposed framework achieved an average angle accuracy of 0.99, distance accuracy of 0.88, and length accuracy of 0.93.

In this paper, we present a general version of polygonal fitting problem called Unconstrained Polygonal Fitting (UPF). Our goal is to represent a given 2D shape S with an N-vertex polygonal curve P with a known number of vertices, so that the Intersection over Union (IoU) metric between S and P is maximized without any assumption or prior knowledge of the object structure and the location of the N-vertices of P that can be placed anywhere in the 2D space. The search space of the UPF problem is a superset of the classical polygonal approximation (PA) problem, where the vertices are constrained to belong in the boundary of the given 2D shape. Therefore, the resulting solutions of the UPF may better approximate the given curve than the solutions of the PA problem. For a given number of vertices N, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is used to maximize the IoU metric, which yields almost optimal solutions. Furthermore, the proposed method has also been implemented under the equal area principle so that the total area covered by P is equal to the area of the original 2D shape to measure how this constraint affects IoU metric. The quantitative results obtained on more than 2,800 2D shapes included in two standard datasets quantify the performance of the proposed methods and illustrate that their solutions outperform baselines from the literature.

Accurate weight measurement is pivotal for monitoring the growth and well-being of cattle. However, the conventional weighing process, which involves physically placing cattle on scales, is labor-intensive and distressing for the animals. Hence, the development of automated cattle weight prediction techniques assumes critical significance. This study proposes a weight prediction approach for Korean cattle using 3D segmentation-based feature extraction and regression machine learning techniques from incomplete 3D shapes acquired from real farm environments. In the initial phase, we generated mesh data of 3D Korean cattle shapes using a multiple-camera system. Subsequently, deep learning-based 3D segmentation with the PointNet network model was employed to segment two dominant parts of the cattle. From these segmented parts, three crucial dimensions of Korean cattle were extracted. Finally, we implemented five regression machine learning models (CatBoost regression, LightGBM, Polynomial regression, Random Forest regression, and XGBoost regression) for weight prediction. To validate our approach, we captured 270 Korean cattle in various poses, totaling 1190 poses of 270 cattle. The best result was achieved with mean absolute error (MAE) of 25.2 kg and mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 5.81% using the random forest regression model.

Nowadays, semantic segmentation is increasingly used in exploration by underwater robots, for example in autonomous navigation, so that the robot can recognise the nature and elements of its environment during the mission and act according to this classification to avoid collisions. Other applications can be found in the search for archaeological artefacts, in the inspection of underwater structures or in species monitoring. Therefore, it is necessary to try to improve the performance in these tasks as much as possible. To this end, we compare some methods for improving image quality and for data augmentation and test whether higher performance metrics can be achieved with both strategies. The experiments are performed with the SegNet implementations and the SUIM dataset with 8 common underwater classes to compare the obtained results with the already known ones. The results obtained with both strategies show that they are beneficial and lead to better performance results by achieving a mean IoU of 56% and an increased overall accuracy of 81.8%. The single result shows that there are 5 classes with an IoU value above 60% and only one class with an IoU value below 30%, which is a more reliable result and easier to use in real contexts.

As we all know, many more dynamic objects appear almost continuously in real world, which are immensely able to impair the performance of the majority of vision-based SLAM systems that are based on the static-world assumption. In order to improve the robustness and accuracy of visual SLAM in the high dynamic environment, a real-time and robust stereo SLAM system for dynamic scenes was proposed. To weaken influences of dynamic content, the moving object detection method was put forward in our visual odometry, then the semantic segmentation network was combined into our stereo SLAM to extract pixel-level contours of dynamic objects. Then influences of dynamic objects were extremely weaken and the performance of our system was increased markedly in dynamic, complex and crowed city spaces. Experiment with both on KITTI Odometry dataset and in a real-life scene, the results show that our method can dramatically decrease the tracking error or drift, improve the robustness and stability of our stereo SLAM in high dynamic outdoor scenarios.
