Candida glabrata (Nakaseomyces glabratus), the second most prevalent Candida pathogen globally, has emerged as a major clinical threat due to its ability to develop high-level azole resistance. In this study, two new 5,6-dihydrotetrazolo[1,5-c]quinazoline derivatives (c11 and c12) were synthesized and characterized using IR, LC-MS, 1Н and 13C NMR spectra. Along with 13 previously reported analogues, these compounds underwent in vitro antifungal testing against clinical C. glabrata isolates using a serial dilution method (0.125-64 mg/L). Remarkably, compounds c5 and c1 exhibited potent antifungal activity, with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.37 μM and 0.47 μM, respectively – about 20-fold improvement over standard drugs like amphotericin B, caspofungin, and micafungin. A detailed structure-activity relationship analysis revealed crucial molecular features enhancing antifungal potency. Extensive molecular docking studies across 18 protein targets explored potential binding pockets and affinities of the lead compounds. A robust 3D-QSAR model, incorporating molecular descriptors Mor26m and Mor29e, displayed good predictive ability for antifungal activity. In silico predictions indicated an absence of herbicidal effect, negligible environmental toxicity (to honeybees, avian species, and aquatic organisms), and mild human toxicity concerns for these compounds. This comprehensive approach aims to develop novel and effective antifungal compounds against the clinically relevant pathogen C. glabrata.

Breast cancer is the most common and the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide; treating invasive breast carcinomas is challenging due to the side effects of chemotherapeutics. Compounds isolated from natural sources have been proposed as potential molecules for cancer therapy; for instance, the homoisoflavonoid brazilin has shown pharmacological properties, including anti-tumoral and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, we isolated brazilin from the heartwood of Haematoxylum brasiletto (Pacific coast of Mexico and Central America); then, we performed a semi-synthesis by adding three methyl or acetyl groups to the core structure of brazilin. We confirmed brazilin and its derivatives identity by spectroscopic data (1H NMR and 13C NMR) and measured their purity by optical rotation. Then, we analyzed the effects of brazilin and derivatives in three mammary gland-derived cell lines: the TNBC MDA-MB-231, the ER(+) MCF7, and the non-tumorigenic MCF10A. We evaluated the cell viability by MTT assays, cell migration by wound-healing assays and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) activation by Western blot. Regarding biological assays, the MTT assay showed that brazilin and its derivatives showed cytotoxic effects on MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells at 20 µM but was not toxic in non-tumorigenic MCF10A mammary epithelial cells. These effects were dose and time-dependent, as well as a decrease in the levels of cell migration and FAK activation.

Solid propellants have significant applications in aerospace, and improving their combustion performance has become a hot research topic in recent years. Carbon black (CB) has been widely used in the field of catalytic pyrolysis due to its low cost, controllable morphology, and ease of modification. Herein, we first investigates the structure-activity relationship between the physicochemical properties of nine types of CB with a particle size range of 1-15 μm and a mass fraction of 5%, including oil absorption value, compression oil absorption value, and oxygen content, and the catalytic pyrolysis of ammonium perchlorate (AP), concluding that the function relationship between oil absorption value and high-temperature peak is Y1=1032.67-9.618x+0.038x2, the function relationship between compression oil absorption value and high-temperature peak is Y2=145.537+62.365ln(x), and the function relationship between oxygen content and high-temperature peak is Y3=e(6.085-0.02/x). Based on these, we further uses coal tar, which is abundant in sources, as the raw material to prepare five types of coal-based CB marked as CB1-CB5 at pyrolysis temperatures of 1000~1800 ℃. The relative error between the actual peak value and the predicted value of the CB/AP composite particles is less than 5%, proving that the peak temperature model of CB/AP composite particles can guide actual production. This study contributes to promoting CB application in improving the catalytic pyrolysis performance of ammonium perchlorate and enhancing the high added value utilization of coal-derived products.

Purpose: Medical experiments frequently involve observations of many variables. For instance, the results of a blood chemistry test are a set of such multivariate data. The study attempts to diagnose the occurrence of scoliosis based on the results of biochemical analyses of blood serum samples. Methods: The following hormones were measured: FSH, LH, E2, PROG, HGH and PTH. Osteocalcin, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D were also measured. Discriminant analysis and decision trees were applied to determine which of the measured parameters would allow the studied set to be divided naturally into four groups of patients. Result: After such a division, these techniques allowed for prognoses, and thus, for assigning new data to the four classes. The results of advanced statistical analyses are presented as classification functions and in a graphical form as a decision tree, as well as a set of decision rules. The study showed that diagnosing scoliosis is possible based on five (LH, E2, PROG, calcium and osteocalcin) out of ten available results of biochemical measurements. Conclusions: Statistical analysis allowed for classifying new medical cases with high probability, which may even increase after new data are introduced into the dataset and corrected classification systems are generated.

This study aimed to find alternative feeds or supplementary feeds that can perform similarly to the existing commercial feeds thereby reducing farmer expense and cutting down their cost of production and increasing their profitability. The formulations for the study included four grow-out treatments mainly: control (commercial feed), taro+control (powdered Colocasia esculenta+commercial fish feed), bloodmeal (formulated fish feed based on bloodmeal), banana stem+control (chopped banana stem+commercial fish feed). A total of 12,000 fingerlings initially weighing 16 g (TL=10 cm) individually were assigned randomly to the four treatments (3000 in each cage measuring 6 x 6 m). The result of the study showed no significant differences between feed treatments from 6^th week onwards, whether with weight [MS=0.130, df=3, F=1.14, P=0.333] or total length of the treatments [MS=0.008, df=3, F=0.40, P=0.75]. The FCR ratio showed bloodmeal (1.60) as lowest, followed by the control (1.65), and taro+commercial (1.71) and then banana stem+commercial (2.18). In terms of weight gain, fish from the bloodmeal treatment gained the highest (236.97 g), followed by control (223.33 g), then taro (217.67 g) and banana stem (196.99 g). As a result, we find that any of the tested treatments can serve as an alternative feed to using purely commercial fish feeds. Cost-benefit analysis showed that a better gross profit margin of 42% and cost-benefit ratio of 1.37 was observed in taro+commercial feed diet.

(1) Background: This study aimed to analyze the temporal dynamics of blood lactate concentration and oxy-gen consumption following supra-maximal efforts, providing insights into recovery kinetics and physiologi-cal responses. (2) Methods: Ten highly trained 100-meter sprinters participated. Each athlete completed a graded exercise test (GXT) and a 30-second Wingate Anaerobic Test. Blood lactate concentrations were meas-ured before, immediately after, and at intervals up to 20 minutes post-exercise. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was continuously monitored during and after the GXT. (3) Results: Peak blood lactate concentration was reached around 3 minutes post-exercise, averaging 14.9 ± 3.5 mmol/L. Lactate clearance followed a bi-exponential decay, with a rapid initial phase (τ1 = 60 seconds) and a slower secondary phase (τ2 = 300 seconds). Peak VO2 values were high (45.4 ± 4.1 ml/kg/min), reflecting significant aerobic capacity. VO2 re-covery also showed a bi-exponential pattern, suggesting efficient recovery mechanisms. (4) Conclusion: The findings support previous research by demonstrating a high anaerobic glycolytic contribution during sprint-ing and rapid lactate clearance due to effective recovery. The bi-exponential models for both lactate and VO2 kinetics provide deeper insight into metabolic responses and recovery profiles, which are crucial for optimiz-ing training in competitive sports. This study offers valuable data for improving recovery strategies and per-formance in sprint athletes.

The salt-controlled vertical segregation of the mixed polymer brushes in was studied using the self-consisting field approach. The brushes contained two types chains were considered. It was assumed that the selectivity to the solvent was varied for one type of chains carrying charge (polyelectrolyte chains) while the others polymer chains in brush remained hydrophilic and neutral. Solvent selectivity (i.e., the hydrophobicity of the polyelectrolyte chains) can be controlled by changing the temperature. At low salt concentrations, the polyelectrolyte chains swell and occupy the surface of the mixed brush. At high salt concentrations, the hydrophobic polyelectrolyte chains collapse and give place to neutral chains on the surface. By changing the selectivity of the solvent and the ionic strength of the solution, the surface properties of such mixed brushes can be controlled. Based on the numerical simulations results, it is shown how the critical selectivity corresponding to the segregation transition in polyelectrolyte/neutral brushes depends on the ionic strength of the solution. It is shown that at the same ionic strength, the critical selectivity increases with increasing chain grafting density and the degree of dissociation of charged groups, as well as with increasing share of polyelectrolyte chains in the mixed brush. Within the framework of the mean field theory, a two-parameter model has been constructed that quantitatively describes these dependencies.

The recent development of Wearable Exoskeletons has stressed their effectiveness in assisting humans for rehabilitation and augmentation purposes. These devices interact with the user, therefore their actuators and power transmission mechanisms are fundamental for improving physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI). The enhanced advancement of 3D-printing technology as a valuable approach for creating light and efficient gearboxes allows for exploring multiple reducers’ designs. However, to the authors’ knowledge, only sporadic implementations with relatively low reduction ratios are reported, and the respective experimental validations usually differ from each other, preventing a comprehensive evaluation of different design and implementation choices. In this paper, we design, develop, and examine experimentally multiple 3D-printed gearboxes conceived for wearable assistive devices. Two relevant transmission ratios (1:30 and 1:80) and multiple designs, that include single and double-stage compact cam cycloidal drives, compound planetary gearboxes, and the series of cycloidal and planetary architectures have been compared to assess the worth of 3D-printed reducers in Human-Robot Interaction applications. The resulting prototypes were examined by evaluating their weight, cost, back-driveability, friction, regularity of the reduction ratio, gear play, and stiffness. The results show that the developed gearboxes represent valuable alternatives for actuating wearable exoskeletons in multiple applications.

Flue gas oxygen content is one of the important parameters in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) process. And its stable control is closely related to the incineration efficiency and pollutant emission. The construction of a high-precision and interpretable flue gas oxygen content model is the basis for achieving its optimal control. However, the existing methods have problems such as poor interpretability, low model accuracy, and complex manual hyperparameter adjustment. In view of the above problems, the article proposes a flue gas oxygen content model based on Bayes-ian optimization (BO) main-complement ensemble algorithm. Firstly, the ensemble TS fuzzy re-gression tree (EnTSFRT) is used to construct the main model. Then, the long short term memory network (LSTM) is used to construct the compensation model with the error of the EnTSFRT model as the true value. The weighted value of the main and compensation models is used as the output. Finally, based on the BO algorithm, the hyperparameters of the constructed main-complement ensemble model are optimized to achieve high performance model. Experi-mental results based on real MSWI process data show that the proposed method has good per-formance.

Testosterone holds significant medical and economic importance, with the global market for testosterone replacement therapies valued at approximately $1.9 billion in 2023. This hormone is essential for the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics as well as bone and muscle health. It plays a key role in conditions such as hypogonadism, muscle disorders, and andropause. However, the industrial production of testosterone often involves complex chemical processes that result in low yields, high costs, and environmental damage. Microbial biotransformation of steroids presents an eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical synthesis. A knockout strain of Aspergillus nidulans deficient in steroid 11-α-hydroxylase activity was developed, rendering it incapable of hydroxylating androstenedione, progesterone, and testosterone. In this strain, two newly identified CYP450 enzymes—CYP68L1 from A. nidulans and CYP68L8 from Aspergillus ochraceus—were expressed to confirm their roles as steroid 11-α-hydroxylases. These enzymes successfully hydroxylated steroids such as androstenedione, progesterone, and testosterone. The availability of these 11-α-hydroxylases represents significant progress toward achieving efficient single-step steroid fermentation. Furthermore, the A. nidulans knockout strain is proposed as an effective model for studying the conversion of androstenedione to testosterone owing to its inability to hydroxylate the testosterone produced during bioconversion.

An earthquake with magnitude of Mw = 6.5–6.6 occurred on April 3, 2023 near the eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula (northwest of Pacific seismic belt) at a depth of H = 95 km, causing shaking with intensity of 6 points on the 12-point MSK-64 scale in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky geodynamic test site, where long-term observations of groundwater pressure in wells are carried out. In wells YuZ-5, E-1, 1303, M-1, located at epicentral distances de = 67–77 km (hypocentral distances dh = 116–122 km), various changes in groundwater pressure/level were recorded: (i) oscillations due to passage of seismic waves, (ii) coseismic jumps of water pressure caused by a change in the static stress state of water-bearing rocks during the formation of rupture in the earthquake source (coseismic effects); (iii) post-seismic effects. In the well E-1, within 93 days before earthquake, a hydrogeodynamic precursor was recording as a lowering in water level/pressure at increased rate. Using this precursor, identified in real time, a forecast conclusion on the strong earthquake possibility was submitted in advance to the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Expert Council for Earthquake Forecasting. The earthquake that occurred was consistent with the forecast in magnitude, time, and location. Seismo-hydrogeodynamic effects in water pressure/level changes recorded in wells YuZ-5 and E-1 corresponded to the previously created typifications of such phenomena for these wells. The issues of creation and verification of seismo-hydrogeodynamic effect typifications for individual observation wells for predicting strong earthquakes and studying the influence of seismicity on groundwater are discussing.

Drawing on corpus-based analysis of emo posts published in the social media network Sina micro blog, we investigate how such aesthetics and sociocultural meanings attached to being “Emo”serves as a metonymy that enables diverse representations of affective states as well as situated emotion enactments. The findings suggest that the term “Emo”has been stretched as it is no longer confined to emotional events within or possibly just beyond emo, with a broader range of listings reflecting different emotions in various contexts. The metonymical nature of the use of “Emo”in Chinese reflects a broader cultural and social phenomenon occurring today in China -- particularly among some young net users. The research underscores the emotional expression pattern of Chinese netizens, which renders a good reference to comprehensively understand the evolution of language type in digital context.

The Global Maritime Transportation System (GMTS) is a complex system of systems, encompassing port operations, shipping lines for both cargo and passengers, manufacturing, vessel traffic control, and the vessels themselves. In recent decades, cybersecurity incidents targeting the GMTS have grown significantly in both frequency and economic impact. In response to this escalating threat, we initiated a comprehensive effort in 2021 to systematically collect and catalog all publicly known cybersecurity incidents affecting the GMTS. Drawing from peer-reviewed research, news articles, and government reports, we compiled this data into the Maritime Cyber Attack Database (MCAD). Our dataset, spanning 2001 to 2023, includes over 290 cybersecurity incidents–representing a several-fold increase from the 46 incidents reported in previous research conducted in 2020. These incidents involve 54 countries and over 50 vessels, in addition to various GMTS-associated entities such as ports. The attribution of these incidents points to a range of known nation-state and criminal threat actors. This paper presents MCAD as a novel cyber threat intelligence tool and provides a high-level analysis of the collected data, offering insights into the evolving cyber threat landscape within the GMTS.

Freight price prediction is a complex problem with multiple determinants. Identifying the most important variables can be used to develop more accurate prediction models and increase the competitiveness of Brazilian soybeans. This study aims to assess the influence of various exogenous variables on the price of soybean road freight and how this influence varies across different distance ranges. A combination of machine learning techniques was employed to evaluate a dataset containing variables related to freight, region, production, fuel, storage, and commercialization. The results indicate that distance is the most significant variable in determining freight costs, aligning with operational expenses such as fuel and labor. Additionally, the exchange rate and export volume emerge as key factors, reflecting the macroeconomic context of Brazilian soybean exports. The stratified analysis highlights the differentiation between short, medium, and long-distance freights, showing that different variables influence the price. Short-distance transportation is mainly geared toward the domestic market, while longer distances are more related to export logistics.

Emanating from several decades of study into the effects of the aging process after spinal cord injury (SCI), "accelerated aging" has become a common expression as the SCI accelerates the onset of age-related pathologies. However, the aging process follows a distinct trajectory, characterized by unique patterns of decline that differ from those observed in the general population without SCI. Aging brings significant changes to muscles, bones, and hormones, impacting overall physical function. Muscle mass and strength begin to decrease with a reduction in muscle fibers and impaired repair mechanisms. Bones become susceptible to fractures as bone density decreases. Hormonal changes combined with decreased physical activity accelerate the reduction of muscle mass and increase in body fat. Muscle atrophy and skeletal muscle fiber type transformation occur rapidly and in a unique pattern after SCI. Bone loss develops more rapidly and results in an increased risk of fractures in body regions unique to individuals with SCI. Other factors, such as excessive adiposity, decreased testosterone and human growth hormone, and increased systemic inflammation, contribute to a higher risk of neuropathically driven obesity, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and increasing cardiovascular disease risk. Cardiorespiratory changes after SCI result in lower exercise heart rates, decreased oxygenation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. While it is important to acknowledge the accelerated aging processes after SCI, it is essential to recognize the distinct differences in the aging process between individuals without physical disabilities and those with SCI. These differences, influenced by neuropathology, indicate that it may be more accurate to describe the aging process in individuals with chronic SCI as neurogenic accelerated aging (NAA). Research should continue to address conditions associated with NAA and how to ameliorate the accelerated rate of premature age-related conditions. This review focuses on the processes of NAA and the differences compared to the aging process in those without SCI. Recommendations are provided to help slow the development of premature aging conditions.

Background/Objectives: Systematic quality review of ultrasound exams is recommended to assure accurate diagnosis. Our primary objectives were to develop a quantitative method for quality review of estimated fetal weight (EFW) and to assess accuracy of EFW for an entire practice and for individual personnel. A secondary objective was to evaluate accuracy of fetal sex determination. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Eligible ultrasound exams included singleton pregnancies with live birth and known birth weight (BW). A published method was used to predict BW from EFW for exams with ultrasound-to-delivery intervals up to 12 weeks. Mean error and median absolute error (AE) were compared between different personnel. Image audits were performed for exams with AE>30% and exams with reported fetal sex different than newborn sex. Results: We analyzed 1,938 exams from 890 patients. In the last exam before birth, median AE was 5.9% and predicted BW was within ±20% of actual BW in 97.2% of patients. AE was >30% in 28 exams (1.4%); image audit found correct caliper placement in all 28. Only 2 patients (0.2%) had AE>30% on the last exam before birth. One sonographer systematically over-measured head and abdominal circumferences, leading to EFWs that were overestimated. Reported fetal sex differed from newborn sex in 7 exams (0.4%), 5 patients (0.6%). Images in 4 of these patients were annotated with correct fetal sex but a clerical error was made in the report. In 1 patient, the unclear image was labeled “probably female” but the newborn was male. Conclusions: Accuracy of EFW in this practice was similar to literature reports. Quantitative analysis identified a sonographer with outlier measurements. Time-consuming image audits could be focused on a small number of exams with large errors. We suggest some enhancements to ultrasound reporting software that may help to reduce clerical errors. We provide tools to help other practices perform similar quality reviews.

Adeno-Associated Viruses (AAVs, genus Dependoparvovirus) are the leading gene therapy vector. Until recently, efforts to enhance their capacity for gene delivery had focused on their capsid. However, efforts are increasingly shifting towards improving the viral replicase, Rep78. We discovered that Rep78 and its shorter isoform Rep52 contain a strictly C-terminal sequence motif, DDx3EQ, conserved in most dependoparvoviruses. The motif is highly negatively charged and devoid of prolines. Its wide conservation suggests that it is required for the life cycle of dependoparvoviruses. Despite its short length, the motif’s strictly C-terminal position has the potential to endow it with a high recognition specificity. A candidate target of the DDx3EQ motif might be the DNA-binding interface of the origin-binding domain of Rep78, which is highly positively charged. Published studies suggest that the motif is not required for recombinant AAV production, but that substitutions within it might improve production.

Ziziphus tree species offer valuable socio-economic and ecological benefits but experience significant damage from insect pests. In Ethiopia, there is limited knowledge on the insects attacking Ziziphus fruits and a study aimed to identify these pests, assess their impact and understand how different land use types (LUTs), affect them were conducted. Sampling involved collecting fifty fruits and ten leaves from ten randomly chosen Ziziphus trees per LUT within each agroecological zone from August to December in 2022 and 2023. Samples were visually assessed for incidence and infestation levels, and the five morphotypes were identified using molecular techniques through phylogenetic analysis. Fruit pest incidence varied during the season yet a positive correlation (r = 0.84) was observed among the assessment months and years. Most fruits showed low to medium infestation levels (5–50%), while severe infestations (>75%) were predominant in the lowland agroecological zone. The insects attributed to the damage were identified as Carpomya incompleta (Becker), Drosophila hydei Sturtevant, D. simulans Sturtevant and Zaprionus indianus Gupta. Fruits showed higher incidence and infestation levels than leaves, indicating significant yield and income losses. Thus, implementing effective management strategies is vital to minimize these losses and achieve sustainable production in Ethiopia.

This study examines the temporal relationship between decentralisation and corruption in water supply schemes across two large Indian states. Utilising a difference-in-differences approach and experiential corruption measures, we analyse the impact of decentralising water utilities from state to local government control. Our findings challenge the prevailing assumption that decentralisation inherently reduces corruption. Instead, we observe a significant increase in corruption immediately following decentralisation. However, this surge diminishes substantially over time, though a residual rise continues in the medium term. These results suggest a nuanced connection between decentralisation and corruption, characterised by an initial learning curve for local governments. Our research contributes to the limited literature on sub-national decentralisation and corruption, offering insights into the dynamic nature of this relationship. The findings have important implications for policymakers and development practitioners, highlighting the need for targeted support during the transition to decentralised governance.

This study explores the shear-induced reversible gel behavior of suspensions containing silica na-noparticles and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). When subjected to vigorous shaking, these mixtures exhibit interesting shear thickening, transitioning from low-viscosity fluids to 'shake-gels' and then reverts to liquid after some time. Rheological measurements conducted at constant shear rates re-veal a significant increase in viscosity by several orders of magnitude occurring at specific time points during the process. Followed by the lowering of the shear rate implemented to understand the relaxation behavior. The investigation specifically examines the influence of various ions from the Hofmeister series on the gelation and relaxation dynamics of these suspensions. Results indicate that salts positioned on the right-hand side of the Hofmeister series, known as salting-in agents, facilitate quicker gelation and slower relaxation of the shake-gels. Conversely, salts on the left-hand side, referred to as salting-out agents, lead to slower gelation and faster relaxation. These observa-tions are attributed to the distinct effects that different salts exert on the conformation of PEO chains. Salting-in agents induce swelling of the polymer chains, enhancing their ability to interact and bridge between silica nanoparticles effectively, thus promoting rapid gelation and sustaining the gel structure for extended periods. In contrast, salting-out agents cause the polymer chains to collapse, reducing their bridging efficiency and resulting in delayed gelation along with a more rapid return to the fluid state during relaxation. Understanding the role of specific ions in modu-lating the gelation and relaxation behavior of colloidal-polymer suspensions provides valuable in-sights for tailoring material properties in various applications, including drug delivery, oil drilling, environmental restoration, coatings, and soft matter engineering.

Galactic rotation curve was formulated before the Sgr A* had been confirmed. The action of the Sgr A* on the rotation curve has not been considered. Now, it was observed that the fastest stars in the Milky Way is in the distance less than 0.5pc from the Sgr A*. It is contradicted with the current galactic rotation curve in which the orbital velocity near the center of the galaxy is the smallest. And, because of the advance of technology, it was observed that the circular velocity curve of the Milky Way from 5 to 30 kpc is with a significantly faster decline (Keplerian decline) compared to the inner parts. It is contradicted with the current curve in which the out parts could be larger or no decline. And, it was observed that the fast galaxy bar continue challenge the standard cosmology. For the reasons, we present an improved galactic rotation curve.

This paper aims to describe and analyze a relativistic engine that uses a permanent magnet and an electrically charged device. According to Newton’s third law, every action is met with an equal and opposite reaction, meaning the total force in a system unaffected by external forces is zero. However, relativity principles state that signals cannot travel faster than the speed of light, so actions and reactions cannot occur simultaneously. As a result, the total force cannot be zero at any given moment. This implies that the system gains mechanical momentum and energy over a finite period. The question then arises about how to uphold the law of momentum and energy conservation. It has been shown that the momentum is balanced by an equal and opposite momentum in the field, while the energy gained by the engine is offset by a reduction in the field’s energy. Previous analyses assumed that the bodies involved were macroscopically neutral, meaning the number of electrons and ions was equal in every volume element. This paper relaxes that assumption and examines charged bodies interacting with magnetic currents from permanent magnetic materials, exploring the implications for a charged relativistic engine based on a permanent magnet.

The skin, being the largest organ of the human body, serves as the primary barrier against external insults, including UV radiation, pollutants, and microbial pathogens. However, prolonged exposure to these environmental stressors can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress, inflammation, and ultimately, skin aging and diseases. Antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralizing ROS and preserving skin health by preventing oxidative damage. In recent years, nanotechnology has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing the delivery of an-tioxidants onto the skin. In particular, liposomal formulations have offered unique advantages such as improved stability, controlled release, and enhanced penetration through the skin barrier. This has led to a surge in research focused on developing liposomal-based antioxidant delivery systems tailored for skin health applications. Through a comprehensive analysis of the literature from the 2019-2024 period, this review provides an overview of emerging trends in the use of liposomal delivery systems developed for antioxidants aimed at improving skin health. It explores the latest advancements in liposomal formulation strategies, vesicles characterization and their applications in delivering antioxidants to combat oxidative stress-induced skin damage and other associated skin pathologies.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is increasingly recognized as a key factor in healthcare, where managing emotions is critical for job satisfaction, productivity, and interpersonal relationships. For nurses, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, EI plays a pivotal role in navigating emotional challenges and improving their quality of work-life (QoWL). This study aims to examine how EI moderates the relationship between nurses' preparedness to care for COVID-19 patients and their QoWL. A cross-sectional, correlational design was used, involving 267 nurses from various healthcare settings. Data were collected through the Emotional Intelligence Scale, the Quality of Nursing Work Life survey, and demographic questionnaires, and analyzed using hierarchical regression. The results showed that nurses' preparedness to care for COVID-19 patients did not initially predict QoWL (β = .034, p = .57). However, when EI was included, it significantly moderated this relationship, explaining 41% of the variance in QoWL. Both personal and social competence components of EI had a buffering effect, highlighting the importance of EI in improving nurses' work-life quality (β = .578, .665, p < .001). These findings suggest that fostering EI in nurses can enhance their resilience and work-life quality, particularly in high-stress healthcare environments like those experienced during the pandemic.

One of the factors leading to the slow decline in poverty in Indonesia is the lack of government at-tention to reduce income inequality. Fiscal policy and economic growth can effectively reduce poverty after lowering income inequality, so the inequality channel must be considered. Socioec-onomic and infrastructure differences between provinces can influence the effectiveness of eco-nomic growth and fiscal policy in reducing poverty. This study aims to assess the effects of eco-nomic growth and fiscal policy on spending and taxes on direct and indirect poverty reduction through lowering income inequality and how these variables influence poverty by province. This study employed secondary data, including panel data for 2010-2023 from 34 provinces in Indo-nesia, which were analyzed using an autoregressive cross-lagged SEM model. The study finds that economic growth and fiscal policy on spending on education and health are statistically sig-nificant in reducing poverty directly in non-Java but do not affect it through income inequality. Taxes increase income inequality, and the social safety net does not reduce poverty outside Java. Increased spending on education and health should continue, with improvements in targeting so-cial safety nets and tax reforms needed to make the system more progressive and reduce inequality

The combination of humans’ cognitive skills and dexterity with the endurance and repeatability of robots is a promising approach to modern assembly. However, planning an assembly sequence and efficiently allocating tasks between humans and robots is a manual, complex, and time-consuming challenge. This work presents a framework named “Extract-Enrich-Assess-Plan-Review" that facilitates holistic planning of human-robot assembly processes. The framework uses heterogeneous data sources to feed a planning algorithm that generates assembly sequences according to various boundary conditions such as resource capability, part dependency, sequencing, and adaptability to human behavior. An expert remains in the loop to enrich the data, review, and modify the automatically generated sequences. As an output, the framework creates assembly sequences with different ways in which humans and robots work together that can be selected depending on the purpose of the subsequent use. For our experimental results, we compare the achieved degree of automation using three different CAD formats. We also demonstrate and analyse multiple assembly sequence plans that are generated by our system. Those assembly plans incorporate different human-robot interaction modalities that are synchronised, cooperative, or collaborative.

This study investigates the physico-chemical characteristics, functional properties, and bioactive profiles of flours from four Thai pulses: black bean, red bean, mung bean, and white bean, with the aim of assessing their potential for health-oriented food products. Nutritional analysis showed significant differences among the flours in terms of protein, fiber, fat, and ash content. Black bean flour exhibited the highest phenolic (19.518 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (31.943 mg QE/g) content, alongside the strongest antioxidant activity measured by DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. Red bean flour had the greatest anthocyanin content (8.214 mg CyE/g) and water absorption capacity, while mung bean flour was distinguished by its high protein (25.965%) and fiber (17.460%) levels. Functional property assessments revealed variations in water absorption, solubility, and emulsifying properties, underscoring their versatility for different food applications. These results suggest that Thai pulse flours are promising ingredients for creating nutritionally enhanced foods with potential health benefits, including antioxidant-rich and low-glycemic products. Future research should focus on how cultivation and processing methods impact the stability and effectiveness of these bioactive compounds, further expanding their potential for use in the food industry.

As the demand for high-frequency and high-power electronic devices has increased, gallium nitride (GaN), particularly in the context of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs), has attracted considerable attention. However, the ‘self-heating effect' of GaN HEMTs represents a significant limitation in terms of both performance and reliability. Diamond, renowned for its exceptional thermal conductivity, represents an optimal material for the enhancement of thermal management in HEMTs. This paper puts forward a novel method for directly depositing diamond films onto N-polar GaN (NP-GaN) epitaxial layers. This eliminates the complexities of the traditional diamond growth process and the need for temporary substrate steps. Given the relative lag in N-polar material growth technologies, which are marked by surface roughness issues, and the recognition that the thermal boundary resistance (TBRGaN/diamond) represents a critical factor constraining efficient heat transfer, our study introduced a series of optimisations with the objective of enhancing the quality of the diamond nucleation layer while ensuring that the integrity of the GaN buffer layer remains intact. Moreover, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) technology was employed to effectively reduce the surface roughness of the NP-GaN base, thereby providing a more favourable foundation for diamond growth. The optimisation trends observed in the thermal performance test results were encouraging. The integration of diamond films onto highly smooth NP-GaN epitaxial layers demonstrated a reduction in TBRGaN/Diamond compared to diamond layers deposited onto NP-GaN with higher surface roughness that had undergone no prior process treatment.

Satellite-derived high-resolution soil moisture and precipitation data have become widely adopted in natural hazard and climate change research. Landslide susceptibility mapping, which often relies on static predisposing factors, faces challenges in accounting for temporal changes, limiting its efficacy in accurately identifying potential locations for landslide occurrences. A key challenge is the lack of sufficient ground-based monitoring networks for soil moisture and precipitation, especially in remote areas with limited access to rain gauge data. This study addresses these limitations by integrating static landslide conditioning factors—such as topography, geology, and landscape features—with high-resolution dynamic satellite data, including soil moisture and precipitation. Using machine learning techniques, particularly the Random Forest (RF) algorithm, the approach enables the generation of dynamic landslide susceptibility maps that incorporate both spatial and temporal variations. The work validates the method by analyzing two major landslide events and their relationship to hydrological factors, occurred during two rainfall events in 2019 in Italy. The results successfully identified high-probability landslide areas by accounting for multiple hydrogeological factors and capturing the unique patterns of rainfall and soil moisture distribution and intensity. The findings emphasize the need for further research to refine the use of high-resolution satellite precipitation and soil moisture data, particularly in identifying the optimal temporal and spatial resolutions for landslide susceptibility mapping.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat that undermines the effectiveness of global healthcare. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have identified numerous microbial organisms, particularly members of the ESKAPEE pathogens, as critical threats to global health and economic security. Many clinical isolates of these pathogens have become completely resistant to current antibiotics, making treatment nearly impossible. Herbal remedies, such as those found in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), have been practiced for thousands of years and successfully used to treat a wide range of ailments, including infectious diseases. Surprisingly, despite this extensive knowledge of folk medicine, no plant-derived antibacterial drugs are currently approved for clinical use. This study explores a comprehensive library comprising 664 extracts from 132 distinct TCM plant species for antimicrobial properties against gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus) bacteria using liquid and solid in vitro assays. Intriguingly, our results reveal 17 plant species with potent antimicrobial properties effective primarily against gram-positive organisms, including Streptococcus aureus and epidermidis. Our results indicate that phytobiotics from the identified plants may be potential candidates for novel antimicrobials.

Neurological disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Schizophrenia (SCH), Bipolar Disorder (BD), and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affect millions of people worldwide, yet their molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study applied the Comparative Analysis of Shapley values (CASh) to transcriptomic data from nine datasets associated with these complex disorders, demonstrating its effectiveness in identifying differentially expressed genes (DEGs). CASh, which integrates Game Theory with Bootstrap resampling, offers a robust alternative to traditional statistical methods by evaluating the contribution of each gene within the broader context of the entire dataset. Unlike conventional approaches, CASh is highly effective at detecting subtle but meaningful molecular patterns that are often missed. These findings highlight the potential of CASh to enhance the precision of transcriptomic analysis, providing deeper insights into the molecular signatures of these disorders and establishing a solid basis for improving diagnostic techniques and developing more targeted therapeutic interventions.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are essential in advancing medical diagnosis and treatment by providing non-invasive tools to assess neurological states. Among these, Motor Imagery (MI), where patients mentally simulate motor tasks without physical movement, has proven to be an effective paradigm for diagnosing and monitoring neurological conditions. Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used for MI data collection due to its high temporal resolution, cost-effectiveness, and portability. However, EEG signals can be noisy from a number of sources, including physiological artifacts and electromagnetic interference. They can also vary from person to person, which makes it harder to extract features and understand the signals. Additionally, this variability, influenced by genetic and cognitive factors, presents challenges for developing subject-independent solutions. To address these limitations, this paper presents a Multimodal and Explainable Deep Learning (MEDL) approach for MI-EEG classification and physiological interpretability. Our approach involves: i) evaluating different deep learning (DL) models for subject-dependent MI-EEG discrimination; ii) employing Class Activation Mapping (CAM) to visualize relevant MI-EEG features; and iii) utilizing a Questionnaire-MI Performance Canonical Correlation Analysis (QMIP-CCA) to provide multidomain interpretability. On the GIGAScience MI dataset, experiments show that shallow neural networks are good at classifying MI-EEG data, while the CAM-based method finds spatio-frequency patterns. Moreover, the QMIP-CCA framework successfully correlates physiological data with MI-EEG performance, offering an enhanced, interpretable solution for BCIs.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract may function as a sensory organ responding to changes in luminal content. Its ability to regulate physiological functions is, in part, determined by the bitter chemosensory capacity of the gut mucosa. We mapped the regional variation of GI tract bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) in order to better understand their relationship to GI function and the gut-brain axis. Mucosal biopsies from the stomach (fundus, body and antrum), duodenum (D2), proximal jejunum, terminal ileum, colon (ascending, transverse, and sigmoid), and rectum were collected from volunteers with no previous gut disorders who were undergoing routine screening by gastroscopy or colonoscopy. Nanostring^tm analysis of TAS2R transcription was conducted on 300 biopsies taken from 28 volunteers. TAS2Rs showed a diverse transcription profile throughout the human GI tract. Two archetypes of gut chemosensing existed with several individuals displaying a more complete TAS2R profile in all regions of the gut. Additionally, regional variation was observed in several TAS2Rs that correlated with cytogenetic location. These data show significant inter-individual and regional variation in gut bitter chemosensory systems reflecting differing luminal sensing capacity in different gut regions and between people.

Adopting an immune response and tissue-based nomenclature in food allergies brings the field closer to precision and personalized medicine. An updated classification of non-IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity highlights mechanisms through a complex pathophysiological perspective and endotype-driven framework. This approach aligns with the essential goals of discovering new diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers, enhancing the understanding of clinical presentations, and refining immunotherapy and targeted treatments, such as monoclonal antibodies and small molecule drugs, to improve patient management and quality of life. Endotype-focused and molecular-based decision-making also endows translational and clinical research, fostering the ongoing scientific quest for more innovative solutions.

The goal of the study presented in this work is to evaluate the performance of a proposed adaptive beamforming approach when combined with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in cell-free massive multiple input multiple output (CF m-MIMO) orientations. In this context, cooperative beamforming is employed taking into consideration the geographically adjacent access points (APs) of a virtual cell, aiming to minimize co-channel interference (CCI) among mobile stations (MSs) participating in NOMA transmission. Performance is evaluated statistically via extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in a two-tier wireless orientation. As results indicate, for high data rate services various key performance indicators (KPIs) can be improved compared to orthogonal multiple access, such as the minimum number of users in the topology as well as the available PRBs for downlink transmission. Although in NOMA transmission more directional beamforming configurations are required to compensate for the increased CCI levels, the increase in the number of hardware elements is reduced compared to the corresponding gain in the considered KPIs.

Our ongoing research focuses on developing imipridone derivatives capable of complete and selective eradication of cancer cells after relatively short treatment. We have synthetized systematically designed novel hybrids and evaluated their antiproliferative activity on PANC-1 and Fadu cell lines. We have also conducted preliminary studies on the mechanism including colony formation as well as dose-response tests in HEK293T wild-type (WT) and HEK293T CLPP-/- cells. Following gradual structural fine-tuning based on high throughput screening we identified two imipridone hybrids as the most potent derivatives. Their unique substitution pattern includes N-methylated propargylamine and ferrocenyl/phenyltriazole moieties on the benzyl groups attached to opposite sides of the imipridone core. The compounds with IC50 values similar to those of ONC201 were found capable of complete eradication of cancer cells at ca. 4 M, while ONC201 treatment at even higher concentrations left 30-50% of viable cells behind. Both compounds were found to exert equal activity in WT and CLPP-/- HEK293T cells, indicating a ClpP-independent mechanism. Further development is needed to improve the tumor selectivity of the two potent imipridone derivatives in order to develop novel drug candidates that evade resistance and can be applied in a sufficiently broad therapeutic window.

To address the issue of low prediction accuracy for sub-grid scale turbulence-radiation interaction (SGS-TRI) characteristics, which impacts the precision of remote infrared signal calculations for gas jet, a term for correlation of radiation-participating component fluctuations with temperature fluctuation was introduced into the current sub-grid Snegirev equation; Simultaneously, we established a new method that is more convenient in complex projects for solving the dynamic sub-grid model coefficients, e.g., dynamic Smagorinsky model and temperature variance model. The validity of these algorithms was confirmed through direct numerical simulations (DNS) for isotropic turbulence and test data of high-temperature air jet flow. The Multi-Scale Multi-Group Wide-Band (MSMGWB) k-distribution model was used to calculate radiative transfer in strongly non-isothermal and inhomogeneous media such as the remote infrared sensing of jet plume scenario considering influences of TRI and SGS-TRI. The study for axisymmetric jet plume revealed that the TRI accounts for more than 1/3 of total remote infrared signal in the 3-5micron band, with the SGS-TRI effect contributing more than 10%. Additionally, this influence was found to further increase with increasing detection distances.

Background: Breastfeeding self-efficacy is a critical factor influencing the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding among mothers. Low self-efficacy affects mothers’ ability to sustain breastfeeding. Several studies have investigated the factors influencing breastfeeding self-efficacy, but none have interconnected maternal, infant, and social support factors. Aims: This study aimed to measure the correlation between maternal and infant factors, social support, and breastfeeding self-efficacy. Methods: A cross-sectional approach was employed in Jember, Indonesia, among 200 breastfeeding mothers. The study population consisted of mothers 17-42 years old who were breastfeeding and who met the following inclusion criteria: mothers who have babies aged 1-6 months, term pregnancy history, wanted pregnancy, and baby weight born ≥ 2500 grams. Maternal and infant factors and social support were determined through interviews and questionnaires. Breastfeeding self-efficacy was examined using The Breastfeeding Self-efficacy Scale Short. The multiple logistic analysis was used for multivariate analysis. Results: Of a total of 200 breastfeeding mothers, 63% had low breastfeeding self-efficacy, and 59.5% of mothers did not exclusively breastfeed. The multiple logistic regression indicated that 74.2% of the factors included in the model influenced breastfeeding self-efficacy. Positive correlations were observed between breastfeeding self-efficacy and feeding type (OR=6.603), breastfeeding frequency (OR=6.220), breastfeeding intention (OR=4.993), and family type (OR=4.001). Conclusion: feeding type, breastfeeding frequency, and family support were the important factors that support breastfeeding self-efficacy.

Phenolic antioxidants such as tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) are widely used by manufacturers to prevent deterioration and more stable preservation of cooking oils. Cooking oil is a necessary substance that everyone needs to consume every day, but the overuse of TBHQ will harm the quality of food and public health, and many countries have set up limited standards for the use of TBHQ, therefore, it is very necessary to research and design an efficient detection technology for TBHQ. In this work, we grew NiAl-LDH, a nickel-aluminium double hydroxide, on glucose carbon spheres (GC), and formed porous carbon nanomaterials (named NiAl-LDH@GC-800) after the pyrolysis process. The NiAl-LDH@GC-800 material was fabricated on GCEs for sensors with remarkable sensitivity to TBHQ, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 8.2 nM and possessed excellent detection linear range (20 nM ~ 300 µM). The prepared electrochemical sensor successfully detected TBHQ detection in edible oils in life, including chilli oil, peanut oil, and canola oil.

Background: Chronic low-grade inflammation in obesity is linked to white adipose tissue (WAT) dysfunction. Plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activates Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), triggering NF-κB and worsening these disturbances. Previously, we showed that H3K27 epigenetic modifications affect WAT gene expression in high-fat diet mice, identifying key pathways in adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). This study explores whether NF-κB influences H3K27 modifiers in human ASCs and evaluates fish oil (FO) as a modulator. Methods: Human visceral WAT ASCs were stimulated with LPS and treated with FO enriched with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Flow cytometry, PCR array, RT-PCR, and Western blot assays were used. Results: LPS increased NF-κB activity, elevating KDM6B demethylase levels and H3K27 acetylation. These epigenetic modifications in LPS-stimulated ASCs were associated with persistent changes in the expression of genes involved in adipogenesis, metabolic regulation, and inflammation, even after LPS removal and cell differentiation. FO mitigated these effects, reducing H3K27 acetylation and promoting methylation. Conclusions: FO demonstrates potential in modulating inflammation-induced epigenetic changes and preserving adipocyte function.

In our country, the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is still very high (35.7-39.6%), especially in youths. We aimed to determine the efficacy of awareness campaigns to prevent DKA on multiple outcomes and identify success predictors. The review included studies that focused on children under 18 years old, and outcomes were measured by comparing before and after implementing the campaigns in the same area and between areas where interventions took place or not. Of 177 records identified, 15 were eligible for analysis. The pooled difference in DKA frequency after a campaign implementation was between 1% and 65.5%. A decrease in the rate of acute complications, such as cerebral edema, was reported. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) at onset showed a mean reduction of 0.7%- 5.1%; C-peptide increased in patients without DKA at diagnosis, and length of hospitalization decreased. Campaign costs were lower than costs of treating subjects with DKA. This review demonstrated that DKA awareness campaigns effectively reduce DKA incidence and improve other parameters, such as acute complications, HbA1c and C-peptide levels, length of hospitalization, and costs, among youths with T1D. To be effective, campaigns must follow specific principles of target population, modality, and minimal duration, reported in this review.

Ellagitannins (ETs) are the group of tannins found in fruits, nuts and seeds; they undergo hydrolysis in the human digestive tract to form ellagic acid (EA). EA further converted into various forms of Urolithin derivatives (A, B, C, D, M-5, M-6 and M-7) by gut micro biota. Perhaps, the pharmacological properties of said Urolithins were extensively studied, while, little is known about the therapeutic role of synthetic Urolithin-C on oxidative stress induced eryptosis and tissue damage. Therefore, in the current study we investigated the ameliorative role of chemically syn-thesized Urolithin-C on sodium nitrite and Diclofenac (DFC) induced eryptosis and vital organ damage respectively. Urolithin-C was synthesized using chemical method and characterized by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS). The synthesized Urolithin-C scavenged free radicals (DPPH, H2O2) and reduced ferric iron to ferrous iron, revealed its antioxidant activity. The observed antioxidant potential of Uro-lithin-C was investigated in sodium nitrite induced stress in RBC and Diclofenac induced tissue damage in rats. Interestingly, Urolithin-C normalized the sodium nitrate-induced oxidative stress in red blood cells by regulating stress markers, such as lipid peroxidation (LPO), total thiol (TT), and protein carbonyl content (PCC), and endogenous antioxidant enzymes superoxide dis-mutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in a dose dependent manner. Similar effect was also observed in the tissue homogenates of liver, kidney, heart and pancreas taken from the Diclofenac injected Sprague Dawley rats. The tissue sections (liver, kidney, heart and pancreas) obtained from the Diclofenac (DFC) received rats showed massive destruction of hepatocytes, nephrons, cardiocytes and pancreas. However, Urolithin-C received rats tissue sections showed normal histology compared to the positive (Silymarin) control treated groups. In addition, Urolithin-C regulated the key tissue specific biochemical markers in DFC injected Sprague Dawley rats serum strengthened its tissue protective role. In conclusion, chemically synthesized Urolithin-C regulated NaNO2 and diclofenac induced oxidative stress in RBC and vital organs through its antioxidant property.

The present study deals with an accident analysis of the “Chaira”- Bulgaria high pressure Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage (PHES), especially the failures of the Francis large scale Hydraulic Unit No. 4 (HU4). The causes of overloading and cracking of the stay vanes and their functionality are investigated. Despite many studies on the behavior of the runner and its safe operation the complete destruction of the system because of the stay vanes failure has not been sufficiently studied and published in the scientific literature. The aim is to assess the reasons that have led to this unprecedented accident of the “Chaira” PHES of total destructions of the stay vanes. Based on the historical data and the operating modes, as well as of the identification of the critical elements an objective assessment of the risks of damage of the stay vanes and of entire unit is proposed. A virtual prototype is built for simulation of the system behavior in working and emergency conditions. The loads, stresses and deformations are precisely calculated. The critical elements of the highly loaded blocks are evaluated. Low cycle material fatigue is with a high degree of confidence the dominated reason for the stay vane complete destruction. The results of the research are used to propose measures for possible rehabilitation and/or replacement of the unit.

Reliable fault detection in satellite attitude control systems stands as a critical aspect of ensuring the safety and success of space missions. Central to these systems, Reaction Wheels (RWs), despite being the most frequently used actuators, present a vulnerability given their susceptibility to faults - a factor with the potential to precipitate catastrophic failures such as total satellite loss. In light of this, we introduce a fault detection methodology grounded in deep learning techniques specifically designed for satellite attitude control systems. Our proposed method utilizes a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model adept at learning temporal patterns inherent to both healthy and faulty system behaviors. Incorporated into our model is a torque allocation algorithm designed to circumnavigate specific velocities known to induce torque disturbances, a factor known to influence LSTM performance adversely. To bolster the robustness of our fault detection technique, we also incorporate denoising autoencoders within the LSTM framework, thereby enabling the model to identify temporal patterns in healthy and faulty system behavior, even amidst the noise. Extensive evaluation of our proposed method on a simulated satellite attitude control system affirmed its ability to achieve commendable fault detection accuracy, demonstrating high system reliability and robustness to noisy input data. Our research underscores a stride in the evolution of fault detection and control strategies for satellite attitude control systems, holding promise to boost the reliability and efficiency of future space missions.

Agricultural soil environments contain different types of nematodes in all trophic levels that aid in balancing the soil food web. Beneficial free-living nematodes (FLNs) consist of bacterivores, fungivores, predators and omnivores that help in the mineralization of the soil and the top-down control of harmful plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs). Annually, $125 billion in worldwide crop losses are caused by PPNs, making them a plant pathogen of great concern for growers. Farmers have started to implement the use of cover crops in agricultural systems for the protection and enrichment of soil but research on how different cover crops affect nematode populations is lacking and in demand. This study aims to determine the effects of legume and grass cover crops, Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and Pearl Millet (Pennisetum glaucum), as well as their mixture on the abundance and diversity of FLN and PPN populations. Soil samples were collected at the time of cover crop maturity and spinach harvest to analyze nematode communities using both morphological and DNA metabarcoding analysis. Results showed that the application of Cowpea and Pearl Millet as well as their mixture in a spinach agricultural system led to the control of PPNs and proliferation of FLN communities, with each cover crop treatment demonstrating different advantages for the various nematode feeding groups. The choice of cover crop implementation by growers for spinach cultivation should thus be based on specific soil health conditions to promote soil fertility and a healthy nematode community.

This article presents a stochastic model for the effect of interference caused by a sudden increase in the number of users that access a QAM digital cellular communication system. As demonstrated, the rapid increase in the number of users that access the system causes a non-stationary traffic in the network. A stochastic differential approach is used to model the epidemic interference effect.

Three-dimensional (3D) models with improved biomimicry are essential to reduce animal experimentation and drive innovation in tissue engineering. In this study, we investigate the use of alginate-based materials as polymeric inks for 3D bioprinting of osteogenic models using human bone marrow stem/stromal cells (hBMSCs). A composite bioink incorporating alginate, nanohydroxyapatite (nHA), type I collagen (Col) and hBMSCs was developed and for extrude-based printing. Rheological tests perfomed on crosslinked hydrogels confirm the formation of solid-like structures, consistently indicating a superior storage modulus in relation to the loss modulus. The swelling behaviour analysis showed that the addition of Col and nHA into an alginate matrix can enhance the swelling rate of the resulting composite hydrogels, which maximizes cell proliferation within the structure. The LIVE/DEAD assay outcomes demonstrate that the inclusion of nHA and Col did not detrimentally affect the viability of hBMSCs over seven days post-printing. PrestoBlueTM revealed a higher hBMSCs viability in the alginate-nHA-Col hydrogel compared to the remaining groups. Gene expression analysis revealed that alginate-nHA-col bioink favoured a higher expression of osteogenic markers, including secreted phosphoprotein-1 (SPP1) and collagen type 1 alpha 2 chain (COL1A2), in hBMSCs after 14 days, indicating the pro-osteogenic differentiation potential of the hydrogel. This study demonstrates that the incorporation of nHA and Col into alginate enhances osteogenic potential and therefore provides a bioprinted model to systematically study osteogenesis and the early stages of tissue maturation in vitro.

The distortions and instability of high-symmetry configurations of polyatomic systems in nondegenerate states are usually ascribed to the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect (PJTE). The geometries of hypericin, isohypericin, and fringelite D were optimized within various symmetry groups. Group-theoretical treatment and (TD-)DFT calculations were used to identify the corresponding electronic states during the symmetry descent. The symmetry descent paths (up to the stable structures without any imaginary vibrations) were determined using the corresponding imaginary vibrations as their kernel subgroups starting from the highest possible symmetry group. The vibronic interaction between the ground and excited electronic states relates to an increasing energy difference of both states during the symmetry decrease. This criterion was used to identify possible PJTE. We have shown that the PJTE in these naturally occurring compounds explains only the symmetry descent paths C2v → C2 and C2v → Cs in hypericin, and the D2h → C2v, D2h → C2v → Cs, and D2h → C2h ones in fringelite D. The electric dipole moments of hypericin and its analogs are determined prevailingly by the mutual orientations of the hydroxyl groups. The same holds for the energies of frontier orbitals in these systems, but their changes during the symmetry descent are less significant.

The concept of Palliative Care (PC) is more and more known in medicine and the need for this type of approach is growing in a world with great longevity and exponentially increasing chronic diseases. More and more cases from internal medicine, gastroenterology or cardiology wards could benefit from a better care if their medical team would align with the PC concept and principles. In this sense we try to present the specifical needs for Romanian patients in accordance with the current standards of care and how they must be adapted to the reality of the medical system in which they are cared for. We consider also that for medical staff from chronic disease wards it may be necessary to recapitulate the most important principles that govern medical practice of palliation, emphasizing some important aspects of applicability in daily clinical activity.

It was assumed that only autogenous bone had appropriate osteoconductive and osteoindutive properties for bone regeneration, but this assumption has been challenged. Many studies have shown that synthetic biomaterials must be considered as the best choice for bone guided regeneration. The objective of this work is to compare the performances of nano-hydroxyapatite/β-Tricalcium phosphate (n-HA/β-TCP) composite and autogenous bone graft in bone regeneration applications. Th composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and used as an allograft in bone defects made in adult Wistar rats. The bone defects in the dorsal cranium were grafted with autogenous bone on one side and the n-HA/β-TCP composite on the other. Histomorphometry evaluation by different staining methods (Goldner trichrome, PAS, Sirius red) and TRAP histochemistry were performed. The immunohistomorphometries to OPN, Cathepsin-K, TRAP, Acid phosphatase, VEGF, NFκ-β, MMP-2, MMP-9, and TGF-β were carried out. The RT-PCR method to RANK-L, Osteocalcine, Alcaline Phosphatase, Osterix, and Runx2 were conducted as well. The results showed that all morphometric evaluations on the different staining methods, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, VEGF and NFκ-β, were higher on the n-HA/β-TCP composite group than in the autogenous bone graft group. The RT-PCR markers were higher in the autogenous bone group than on the n-HA/β-TCP composite group. The n-HA/β-TCP composite exhibited enhanced cell-matrix interactions in bone remodeling, higher adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, and increased vascularization. These results suggests that the n-HA/β-TCP composite induces faster bone formation than autogenous bone.

People experiencing homelessness face challenges that result in poorer health outcomes compared to those in stable housing. This study provides the results from over 40 health measures that capture the general physical and mental health of a group of people experiencing homelessness aged 22 to 84 years, in an inner-city location, invited to participate in a comprehensive assessment of physical and psychological health. We found evidence of accelerated ageing, with 44.2% of people being clinically frail, 63% had poor functional movement, and 36% had pain associated with oral health. Additionally, 90.6% of participants showed health risks due to nutrition deficiencies, over half reported poor sleep quality, 55.3% reported having psychological distress, and almost half reporting fair or poor overall dental health. This study presents a path to providing a relatively easily implemented group of health assessments to help respond to a group of underlying causes for accelerated ageing, among a group of inner-city people experiencing homelessness. This work can be used to inform the prioritisation and development of community-based health services to address functional deficits that may contribute to accelerated ageing.

Foam rolling is widespread and deeply rooted in exercise practice. Optimal duration and role of this treatment still lack scientific consensus. Relatively novel foam rolling treatment that combines vibration during application targets different muscle characteristics that are not well understood. Studies exploring this combined treatment are scarce therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of different duration vibration (15-s, 30-s and 60-s) foam rolling treatment on muscle skin temperature and surface muscle electromyography during Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction. Eighteen male subjects attended the research laboratory for three experimental sessions and performed four sets of three trials of maximal isometric heel rises. Repeated measures ANOVA determined that muscle skin temperature significant difference was only found for the 30-s treatment (p = 0.013 - 0.000). For surface muscle electromyography a 30-s treatment out of all three yielded the most significant results, between pretreatment set and post treatment set1 (p=0.01) small effect size (Cohen’s d= -0.33) and pretreatment set to post treatment set3 (p=0.01) small effect size (Cohen’s d= -0.30). All treatments did not produce significant difference during Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction heel rises. Future studies should investigate accute effects of longer duration treatment on changes in surface muscle temperature. Muscle activity could suggest that efficiency was improved taken into account of unchanged muscle strength, also downward trend of muscle activity caused by other two treatment durations could be of significance during rehabilitation process or during activites where this is a desired and indicated goal.

This systematic review explores how blockchain technology (BcT) can enhance the sustainability, efficiency, and transparency of 3D concrete printing (3DCP) in the construction industry. BcT offers promising solutions to persistent challenges such as resource inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and complex project management. 3DCP, as a cutting-edge construction method, has shown potential in reducing waste, optimizing resources, and enabling intricate designs that traditional methods struggle to achieve. However, its adoption is slowed by supply chain and execution issues. Blockchain’s decentralized and immutable nature allows for secure, traceable, and transparent data management, improving material tracking and automating workflows via smart contracts. Following PRISMA guidelines, an initial search identified 767 papers from Web of Science and Scopus, and through an extended search using additional keywords, a total of 3,227 materials were found. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 10 studies were analyzed through scientometric and content analysis. The review highlights blockchain’s potential to promote material reuse and support circular economy principles, improving 3DCP’s sustainability. While promising, the integration of these technologies lacks real-world case studies, underscoring the need for further research. This review positions blockchain as a key driver for advancing sustainable practices in 3DCP.

This article mainly discusses the prospects of DNA vaccines as a future form of immunization. DNA vaccines, also known as nucleic acid vaccines or gene vaccines, inject genes encoding specific protein antigens directly into animals. By utilizing recombinant eukaryotic expression vectors, they activate the immune system to produce specific humoral and cellular immune responses, providing comprehensive protection against specific pathogens. Compared with traditional vaccines, DNA vaccines have shown new promise in addressing many viral infections. Although no DNA vaccines have been approved for use in humans at present, research on DNA vaccines for specific human diseases, such as prostate cancer, is ongoing. Additionally, the delivery methods of DNA vaccines, including oral vaccines and particle-mediated epidermal vaccination, as well as the challenges and directions for improvement in their clinical application, are explored. Finally, despite these challenges, the research and application prospects of DNA vaccines are broad.

microRNAS (miRNAs) maintain cellular homeostasis by blocking mRNAs through binding with t-RNA to fine-tune the expression of genes across numerous biological pathways. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for the discovery of miRNA was long overdue and now we anticipate a deluge of research work involving miRNA to repeat the history with other RNA prizes. While miRNA therapies include several complex diseases, the realization that miRNA regulates genes, its role in addressing therapies of hundreds of diseases is expected but with advancement in drug discovery tools, we anticipate faster entry of new drug entities; to promote this, we provide details of the current science, logic, intellectual property, formulations and regulatory process with anticipation that now many more researchers will deliver novel therapies based on the discussion and advice provided in this paper.

Background: Decision, whether to de-label patient with suspected BL hypersensitivity, is based on the risk stratification. The aim of the study was to prepare a characteristic of diagnostic risk groups and to create a model enabling the identification of the low-risk diagnostic group. Methods: We analyzed medical records of patients hospitalized due to suspected hypersensitivity to BL antibiotics. Based on the history data, patients were divided into three diagnostic risk groups, using the criteria proposed by Shenoy et al. Univariate and multivariate analysis model were used to create a diagnostic tool. Results: Among 263 patients referred for BL hypersensitivity diagnosis, 88 (33.5%) were qualified to group I, 129 (49%) to group II, and 46 (17.5%) to group III. There were significant differences between diagnostic risk groups regarding history of hypersensitivity to penicillins (p<0.001), cephalosporins (p<0.001), >1 BL (p<0.05), several episodes of BL hypersensitivity (p<0.001), medical intervention (p<0.001), documented hypersensitivity (p<0.001), time from drug intake to symptoms (p<0.001), time from hypersensitivity to diagnosis (p<0.001). 81 patients (30.8%) were de-labeled: 52 (59.8%) in group I, 27 (20.9%) in group II and 2 (4.3%) in group III. In univariate analysis, model of the low diagnostic risk group applied to the de-labeled part showed 90% specificity and 21.93% sensitivity. NPV and PPV were estimated at 72.04% and 49.53%, respectively. Multivariate model had high specificity but low sensitivity; its NPV was 76% with 68% PPV. Conclusions: The tool enabling the identification of low diagnostic risk patients based on anamnesis is not sensitive enough, to de-label patients on its basis.

Rapid urbanization has facilitated socioeconomic development but has also exacerbated land use/cover change (LUCC), significantly impacting ecological environments. Timely, objective, and quantitative assessments of ecological quality changes resulting from LUCC are essential for safeguarding the natural environment and managing land resources. However, limited research has explored the potential interrelationships between the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of LUCC and ecological quality during urbanization. This study focuses on Xiong’an New Area, a region experiencing rapid urbanization, utilizing the remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) to monitor ecological quality dynamics from 2017 to 2023. To address the computational challenges associated with large-scale regions, a streamlined RSEI construction method was developed using Landsat imagery and implemented via Google Earth Engine (GEE). A geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis, integrated with Sentinel-2 land use data, was employed to examine the influence of LUCC on ecological quality. The findings reveal the following: (1) Ecological quality in Xiong’an New Area exhibited an overall positive trajectory, with improvements elevating the ecological status to above moderate levels. (2) Urban expansion resulted in a 17% reduction in farmland, primarily converted into construction land, which expanded by approximately 12%. (3) Ecological protection policies have facilitated the conversion of farmland into wetlands and urban green areas, which have emerged as the principal contributors to ecological quality enhancement. (4) A positive correlation was observed between changes in ecological land and ecological quality, while a negative correlation was identified between shifts in construction land and farmland and ecological quality. This research provides valuable scientific insights into ecological conservation and land use management, thereby establishing a foundation for the development of rational land resource planning and sustainable ecological development strategies in the Xiong’an New Area.

Background/Objectives: After the earthquakes in Turkey, many citizens were injured, and a long process requiring physiological and psychological treatments started in the ongoing process. The aim of this study was to observe the pain and psychological changes in earthquake victims in light of the QoR-15 score. Methods: After approval by the local ethics committee (Decision No. 2023-194), earthquake victims with catheters in trauma and reconstructive surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Demographic and catheterization data were collected. Baseline, 24-hour, and 72-hour QoR-15 (Quality of Recovery-15) and VAS (Visual Analog Scala) scores were compared for changes over time. Results: A total of 40 catheters were placed in 29 patients (after the exclusion of children, 36 catheters were evaluated in 26 (15 w/11 m) patients). The mean age of the patients was 35.57 ± 13.69 years, and the duration of catheterization was 8 (4.25–12.75) days. Infusion of 0.1% bupivacaine 0.5–1 mg/kg/24 h was started routinely. The QoR-15 scores of the patients at baseline, 24-hour, and 72-hour were 80.45 ± 17.76, 95.27 ± 15.16, and 101.06 ± 15.52, respectively (p<0.001). The VAS scores of the patients at baseline, 24-hour, and 72-hour were 4.61 ± 1.41, 1.79 ± 1.36, and 0.76 ± 0.86, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusions: In this study, a significant improvement in QoR-15 and VAS scores was achieved as a result of catheter insertion in earthquake victims. Considering that post-traumatic injuries require repeated surgeries and that pain aggravates the existing psychological state, it can be said that catheterization is beneficial.

Contemporary urban areas are often characterized by various forms of enclaves, isolated from their surrounding geographical context. Urban Green Infrastructures provide an opportunity to open these enclaves, establishing physical and functional connections with the broader city, while also contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation. This study examines the district of San Bartolomeo in the Italian city of Cagliari as an example of urban enclave and employs a participatory planning process to design a project that transforms it into a hub open to the wider city community. The result is a neighborhood shaped by its community, where social, economic, and environmental needs are balanced, fostering constant interaction between residents and the city as a whole.

The Gig Economy (GE) has revolutionized traditional employment structures, emphasizing flexibility and autonomy for workers. However, the absence of a standardized framework often leads to uncertainties regarding work arrangements (WA) and outcomes. In response, we pro-pose an Outcome-Based (O-B) approach tailored to the unique dynamics of the GE in an era marked by high volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). Drawing from an extensive literature review and industry insights, a comprehensive framework is developed, highlighting the integration of key elements such as task clarity, performance evaluation, and incentive mechanisms. Moreover, this framework considers the implications for various stake-holders, including gig workers, platform operators, and regulatory bodies. By aligning work ex-pectations with measurable outcomes, this approach seeks to enhance efficiency, accountability, and satisfaction within the GE ecosystem. The implications of adopting such a framework are discussed in terms of its potential to foster mutual trust, mitigate conflicts, and promote sus-tainable growth in the evolving landscape of flexible WA.

Background/Objectives: In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors implemented an innovative and alternative approach to practice learning for a Cohort of Year One Adult and Mental Health student nurses. The evaluation aimed to explore the effectiveness of virtual practice learning as a viable alternative to traditional practice placements and the impact on the student practice learning experience. Methods: All year one student nurses attending the four Simulated Practice Learning Experience (SPLE) weeks were invited to participate and complete a generated questionnaire within the virtual environment on their final day of each week. The evaluation employed a mixed methods approach to evaluate the effectiveness of the SPLE on student satisfaction and their overall practice learning experience. Results: A mean total of 205 student nurses completed the questionnaire, achieving a response rate of 98-100%. Students reported an overall satisfaction score of 88%, highlighting their preparedness and positive feedback on the organisation, delivery, and content of the SPLE. Qualitative analysis revealed key themes, including the development of transferable skills and personal growth, the value of peer learning, the benefits of a virtual environment, and appreciation of service user and healthcare professional input. Students reported significant personal growth, improved communication skills, and a deeper understanding of holistic care through interactive and collaborative learning experiences. Conclusions: This evaluation underscores the innovative potential of virtual practice learning to enhance nursing education, emphasising the importance of integrating emerging technologies and diverse pedagogical approaches. The findings suggest that SPLEs can effectively prepare nursing students for the complexities of clinical practice while addressing the evolving demands of healthcare education. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the sustained impact of virtual learning on clinical experiences and professional development.

The initial emergence of COVID-19 was observed in China on November 17, 2019, marking the likely starting point of the outbreak. It is estimated that a minimum of 266 individuals were infected with COVID-19 in China during 2019. Subsequently, the virus gradually disseminated across the globe. As of now, the global count of COVID-19 infections stands at 704,753,890, with a total of 7,010,681 fatalities. This pandemic has not only posed a threat to public healthcare but has also resulted in psychological complications. This article focuses on the approaches taken by the government of Bangladesh to address such mental health issues.

Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors can be used for gene delivery. AAV.CAP-Mac was recently developed; it can cross the blood-brain barrier and transduce cells throughout the CNS. However, some brain regions were not transduced in adult rhesus monkeys. Additionally, AAV vectors can only package 5 kb of DNA. Also, AAV vectors may be genotoxic and cytotoxic, especially at high doses. Finally, AAV vectors are very expensive to produce at sufficiently high titers for treatment. Off-the-shelf cell-based delivery systems wherein the cells can infiltrate the target tissue and be hyper-motile would be ideal. Also, mRNA-based gene editing would be a transient treatment, and thus be much safer.

In many conurbations, the pressure on the quality of living increases and affects the most vulnerable, human, and non-human populations the most. In this article we describe a mapping and designing investigation how a green metropolis can be developed. The approach used is to make a distinction between the landscape pain, the ways of healing and the opportunities to create environments that people can love. We found that this approach reveals concrete and widespread pain in the metropolis, such as interventions in natural landscapes (rivers and mountains), air pollution, ecological degradation, and hydrological disconnections. The strategy to heal this pain is to uncover the currently hidden and invisible creeks and rivers, then create an abundant zone of ecological space around it before integrating human activities and urban uses. In addition to this, specific design principles have been developed for hydro-ecological corridors, water retention, green islands, and greenways. These places can be replicated to support the healing strategy. These places create an environment that the urban residents love. The analysis of landscape pain, the healing strategies, and the local places to love, can be applied to enhance the quality of life for many urban residents and non-human ecologies in metropolitan areas around the globe.

Breathing in fine particulate matter with diameters less than 2.5 µm (PM_2.5) has greatly increased an individual’s risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. As climate change progresses, extreme weather events, including wildfires, are expected to rise, exacerbating air pollution. The 2023 Canadian wildfires highlighted the growing threat of PM_2.5 as smoke spread across U.S. cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. This research investigates the application of data augmentation techniques to improve the accuracy of PM_2.5 concentration forecasts in these urban environments. Models trained on imbalanced datasets often struggle to capture extreme pollution events, underestimating high PM_2.5 levels due to the model’s focus on more frequent, low-value samples. To address this, we implemented cluster-based undersampling and trained transformer models using various cutoff thresholds (12.1 µg/m³ and 35.5 µg/m³) and partial sampling ratios (10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50). Our results demonstrate that the 35.5 µg/m³ threshold, coupled with a 20/80 partial sampling ratio, provides the best performance regarding RMSE and R², particularly in capturing high PM2.5 events. Overall, models trained on augmented data significantly outperformed those trained on original data, highlighting the importance of resampling techniques in improving air quality forecasting accuracy, especially for high-pollution scenarios. These insights significantly contribute to a better understanding of PM_2.5 pollution with the hopes of more informed public health and environmental policies.

In the era of information explosion in e-commerce, users face an overload problem. Recommender systems alleviate this by filtering target products based on user preferences. Collaborative Filtering (CF) is a popular method but struggles with high-quality recommendations due to data sparsity. Utilizing review texts to capture user preferences has improved CF recommendations. This paper proposes a deep learning-based recommendation framework leveraging bidirectional gated recurrent units (Bi-GRUs) and an attention-based Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) structure. This framework addresses insufficient user rating data by utilizing user reviews to infer preferences. Experimental results on three datasets show that the proposed Bi-GRUCF model outperforms other state-of-the-art methods, achieving a 55.4% improvement in Mean Absolute Error (MAE) over traditional methods and a 77.8% improvement over other deep learning approaches. This demonstrates the framework's superior recommendation quality, particularly in sparse data scenarios.

Abstract The evolution of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS) represents one of the most remarkable examples of biological complexity emergence. This review traces the developmental trajectory of the CNS from early chordates to modern humans, highlighting key evolutionary innovations. The primitive nerve cord of early chordates evolved into increasingly specialized structures, with major transitions including the development of the tripartite brain, the emergence of the telencephalon, and the progressive elaboration of the cerebral cortex. Critical evolutionary adaptations included the development of neural crest cells, the regionalization of brain structures, and the remarkable expansion of associative areas. The mammalian radiation brought significant advances in brain organization, particularly in the neocortex. The primate lineage witnessed further elaboration of cortical areas, culminating in the human brain's unique features: expanded prefrontal cortex, enhanced connectivity, and sophisticated neural networks supporting advanced cognitive capabilities. This evolutionary journey illuminates how incremental changes in neural organization laid the foundation for human consciousness and cognitive complexity. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the predominant endocrine disorder among women of re-productive age and represents the leading cause of anovulatory infertility, which imposes a con-siderable health and economic burden. Currently, medications used to treat PCOS can lead to certain adverse reactions, such as affecting fertility and increasing the risk of venous thrombosis. Drug delivery systems utilizing nanomaterials, characterized by prolonged half-life, preci-sion-targeted delivery, enhanced bioavailability, and reduced toxicity, are currently being em-ployed in the management of PCOS. This innovative approach is gaining traction as a favored strategy for augmenting the therapeutic efficacy of medications. Consequently, this paper dis-cusses the roles of nanoparticles, nanocarriers, and targeted ligands within nanomaterial-based drug delivery systems, aiming to identify optimal methodologies for treating PCOS using nano-materials. Additionally, prospective research avenues concerning nanomaterial-based delivery systems in the context of PCOS, as well as the implications of existing insights on the advancement of novel therapies for PCOS, are highlighted.

Invasive species and plant diseases are critical threats to ecosystems and agriculture worldwide. Effective early detection of these threats can significantly mitigate their impact on biodiversity and crop yields. This paper presents a neural network-based model for detecting leaf diseases and identifying invasive species using advanced image processing techniques. The model integrates edge detection, color analysis, and morphological feature extraction to assess leaf health and species type. By automating the identification process, this approach offers an efficient and scalable solution for real-time ecological monitoring, contributing to conservation and agricultural sustainability efforts.

Background: Gastric carcinoma in the Belgian Shepherd dog varieties Tervueren and Groenendael is commonly recognized and carries a grave prognosis. Information on incidence and heritability is necessary to design an effective selection strategy against this disease. Methods: A database of cases and controls was built including cases with tier 1 (confirmed by endoscopy or post-mortem) and tier 2 evidence of gastric carcinoma. From the database, a birth cohort from dogs born in the Netherlands in the period 2000-2010 was used, together with pedigree information to calculate heritability using a mixed models approach. Univariate linear regression was used to test the influence of gastric carcinoma status of the parents on gastric carcinoma occurrence in offspring. Results: For Tervueren the 10-year cumulative incidence is 4.7%, for the Groenendael this was 2.1%. There was no sex predilection. The odds of gastric carcinoma were 5.0 (2.4-11.0) in offspring when at least one parent was known to be affected versus at least one parent was known to be unaffected. Heritability, based on analysis using pedigree information from 338 dogs with gastric carcinoma and 159 controls was 0.53 (se 0.15). Conclusions: Gastric carcinoma in the Belgian Shepherd Tervueren and Groenendael has a high incidence in the Dutch population and has a strong genetic component. Because it is a late onset disease, dogs are often already used for breeding before they are diagnosed. An effective breeding strategy for reducing the incidence therefore relies on the identification of genetic risk factors influencing the development of the disease.

The automotive industry is under growing pressure from regulatory agencies to improve the recyclability of their plastic components. Simultaneously, manufacturers are adopting natural fiber composites in vehicles to reduce carbon footprints and decrease reliance on petroleum-based materials. This presents a challenge at vehicle end-of-life however, as natural fiber-reinforced polymers are substantially more difficult to recycle than their unreinforced counterparts. This study investigated the development of a mechanical recycling process for paper fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites, focusing on the impact of injection molding parameters—specifically, injection temperature and rate—on the thermal, mechanical, and water uptake properties of the composites. The results showed that processing temperature had a greater influence on composite performance than injection rate, with some limited interaction effects between the two. Higher processing intensity damaged the paper fibers, increasing the number of nucleation sites and resulting in greater polypropylene crystallinity. These structural changes reduced tensile properties at higher intensities, while flexural properties improved. Objective function analysis was applied to identify optimal processing conditions, balancing these competing trends. Overall, the findings demonstrate that paper fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites can be recycled into automotive relevant injection molding compounds using conventional plastic manufacturing techniques, though careful tuning of processing parameters is essential to achieve optimal performance.

This study proposes parabolic dish-based toroidal structured fractal solar collectors. The potential of fractal geometry to increase heat transfer and the ability of the parabolic dish to concentrate solar rays form the basis of the proposed design for increasing the efficiency. In the study, the thermal and hydrodynamic behaviors of the proposed 3-row, 4-row and 5-row parabolic collectors were investigated comprehensively. Using theoretical modeling and experimental results, the performances of the proposed parabolic dish-based toroidal fractal solar collectors were evaluated and compared via numerical simulation methods. After the experimental studies of the 3-row toroidal fractal collector, the analysis studies were completed using the ANSYS-Fluent program. Then, simulations were carried out for other toroidal solar collectors using the results of these experimental studies. As a result of the converging numerical analyzes, the radiative, hydrodynamic and thermal analysis results of the toroidal absorbers in 3-row, 4-row and 5-row structures integrated with the parabolic dish were compared. In the temperature distribution analysis, it was observed that the parabolic dish effectively focuses on the sun rays and provides a gradual temperature increase of approximately 21 K for the fractal collector. It is observed that 96.84% convergence was achieved between the experimental and numerical results.

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy has been established as a viable treatment option for inoperable early-stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer or secondary lesions mainly in oligoprogressive/oligometastatic scenarios. Treating lesions in the so-called “no flight zone” has always been challenging and conflicting data never cleared how to safely treat these lesions. This is truer considering ultra-central lesions, i.e. directly abutting or whose PTV is overlapping critical mediastinal organs. While historical retrospective data is abundant but mostly heterogenous in terms of definition of ultra-central lesions, dosing regimens and outcomes, prospective data remains scarce, even though recently published studies have given new encouraging results for such delicate treatment scenarios. For this reason, we aimed to review and summarize current knowledge on stereotactic radiation treatment for ultra-central thoracic lesions, highlighting the most recent advances and the messages that can be taken from them. Lastly, we propose a workflow of the necessary steps to identify and treat such patients, therefore helping in elucidating them with advantages and caveats of such treatment option.

In this article, the linear non-equilibrium thermodynamic approach is used to analyze the energy regularities of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) taking into account iron losses. The IPMSM is considered a linear power converter (PC) that is multiple linearized at operating points with given angular velocity and load torque. A universal description of such a PC by a system of dimensionless parameters and characteristics made it possible to analyze the perfection of energy conversion in the object. For IPMSM, taking into account iron losses, a mathematical model of the corresponding PC has been built, and an algorithm and research program have been developed, which is valid in a wide range of machine speed regulations. This allows you to obtain the efficiency maps for IPMSM and choose the optimal points of PC operation according to the maximum efficiency criteria. The results of the studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for determining the optimal reference of the components d and q of the armature current for both the MTPA strategy at motor speed adjusting below the nominal value and for the FW strategy at its adjusting above the nominal value.

Background. Gastrointestinal (GI) distress is prevalent and often persistent among cancer survivors, impacting their quality of life, nutrition, daily function, and mortality. GI health screening is important to prevent and manage this distress. However, accurate classification methods for GI health remain unexplored. We aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models to classify GI health status (better vs. worse) by incorporating biological aging and social determinants of health (SDOH) indicators in cancer survivors. Methods. We included 645 adult cancer survivors from the 1999-2002 NHANES survey. Using training and test datasets, we employed six ML models to classify GI health conditions (better vs. worse). These models incorporated leukocyte telomere length (TL), SDOH, and demographic/clinical data. Results. Among the ML models, the random forest (RF) performed the best, achieving a high area under the curve (AUC = 0.98) in the training dataset. The gradient boosting machine (GBM) demonstrated excellent classification performance with a high AUC (0.80) in the test dataset. TL, several socio-economic factors, cancer risk behaviors (including lifestyle choices), and inflammatory markers were associated with GI health. The most significant input features for better GI health in our ML models were longer TL and an annual household income above the poverty level, followed by routine physical activity, low white blood cell counts, and food security. Conclusions. Our findings provide valuable insights into classifying and identifying risk factors related to GI health, including biological aging and SDOH indicators. To enhance model predictability, further longitudinal studies and external clinical validations are necessary.

Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation and iron accumulation, has been implicated in the progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in obesity. This study investigated the role of ferroptosis in the development of hepatic steatosis and MASH in obese mice and assessed the therapeutic potential of ferrostatin-1, a ferroptosis inhibitor. C57BL/6J wild-type mice (n = 8) and ob/ob (n = 16) were maintained on a standard chow diet. Mice were divided into three groups that included C57BL/6 (n = 8), ob/ob (n = 8), and ob/ob + ferrostatin-1 (FER) (n = 8), with the latter group receiving an intraperitoneal injection of 5 μM/kg ferrostatin three times per week for eight weeks. Following treatment, serum and tissue samples were collected for analysis. Significant hepatic steatosis and increased lipogenesis markers were observed in ob/ob mice, and this was normalized in the ob/ob + FER group treated with ferrostatin-1. Elevated oxidative stress was indicated by increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the ob/ob group, while glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) activity was significantly reduced. Ferrostatin-1 treatment decreases MDA levels and restores GPX4 activity. Additionally, ferrostatin mitigates iron overload and promotes macrophage polarization from M1 to M2, thereby reducing liver inflammation and fibrosis. Ferrostatin treatment reversed mitochondrial dysfunction in ob/ob mice Our findings revealed that ferroptosis plays a significant role in the progression of obesity to hepatic steatosis and MASH. Inhibiting ferroptosis using ferrostatin-1 effectively improves liver histology, reduces oxidative stress, normalizes lipogenesis, and modulates macrophage polarization. This study highlights the potential of targeting ferroptosis as a therapeutic strategy for obesity-related liver diseases, warranting further investigation in clinical settings.

This study investigates the shoreline evolution of the Tuscany coast (Italy) from 1878−83 to 2019. The 205 km sandy coastline, divided into 821 sectors each one 250 meters long, was analyzed to understand how human activities have altered this once-pristine coast. Sub-period analyses highlighted the impacts, both positive and negative, of various shore protection projects. Initially, regional beaches were undeveloped and accreting, except for some river deltas where alternating phases of erosion and accretion were observed. Coastal erosion began at these deltas due to reduced sediment input and expanded with the development of human settlements and tourism. Shore protection structures were quickly built to safeguard these areas: some succeeded but others increased erosion rates in downdrift sectors. Beach nourishment projects added about 1 million cubic meters of sediment since the 1980s, mostly from inland quarries. Currently, 57.8% of beaches are larger than in the 1880s, 9.4% remained the same, and 32.8% are narrower. Overall, the Tuscan coast gained 6.5 km² of beach surface with an average shoreline advancement of 32 m. Recent trends (2005-2019) show that 37.7% of the coast is eroding, 21.1% is stable, and 41.2% is accreting, with a total surface area increase of about 200,000 m². Although these changes may seem significant, from geomorphological and coastal management perspectives, they highlight that beach surface area is still increasing despite the existing reduced sediment input. This is due to the reduced loss of sediment due to the existence of morphological cells enclosed by headlands and the absence of submarine canyons directing sediments to the continental shelf.

Candida albicans, a significant human pathogen due to its biofilm-forming ability, poses a serious health risk. This study investigates the antifungal activity and biofilm inhibition potential of Tea Tree Oil (TTO) from Melaleuca alternifolia cultivated in Vietnam. Renowned for its bioactive compounds, including terpinen-4-ol, 1,8-cineole, and terpinolene, the essential oil of M. alternifolia, commonly referred to as TTO, is scrutinized for its impact on C. albicans. The study meticulously determines the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) of TTO against C. albicans in both planktonic and biofilm states. Additionally, it assesses the biofilm-forming capacity of C. albicans and establishes the Minimum Biofilm Inhibitory Concentration (MBIC) and Minimum Biofilm Eradication Concentration (MBEC) of TTO. Employing a liquid culture dilution method within a defined concentration range of 0.1 μL/mL to 10 μL/mL, the experimental approach adheres to established protocols. The outcomes reveal a noteworthy MIC and MIC₈₀ of 0.1 μL/mL and 2 μL/mL, respectively, and an MFC of 10 μL/mL for TTO against C. albicans. Furthermore, TTO exhibits an MBIC of 2 μL/mL, showcasing its efficacy in inhibiting biofilm formation. However, the MBEC of TTO remains uncertain, possibly due to insufficient concentration tested, which may not effectively disrupt over 50% of the pre-formed biofilm mass within 24 hours. These findings highlight TTO’s significant potential as both an antifungal agent and a biofilm inhibitor against C. albicans, providing essential insights that could guide the development of new therapeutic approaches for treating fungal infections.

Changing the symmetry of spin from SU(2) to the quaternion group, Q8, introduces Q-spin which has a number of ramifications. We first summarize the properties of Q-spin and then discuss some of those resulting changes. Many are counter to well-established ideas which change our view of the microscopic. Dirac’s matter-antimatter pair is challenged, being replaced by a 2D structured spin. His negative energy issue and the baryon asymmetry problem are resolved; parity is not violated in beta decay, and the existence of neutrinos is questioned. Bell’s theorem is disproven by counter example, restoring Local Realism to Nature. The singlet state is an approximation; teleportation is not feasible, quantum computing must change to remove teleportation and focus on the qubit form of Q-spin which gives deterministic outcomes of ±1. This impinges on the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, and we discuss the reasons for the failure of Bell’s theorem; the use of Hidden Variables, wave function collapse and explain the violation of Bell’s Inequalities by showing Q-spin is a boson of odd parity in free flight, and a fermion of even parity in a polarizing field. The violation of Bell’s Inequalities is due to an anyon transition between a boson and a fermion, formulating wave-particle duality. These changes are a result of compexifying the Dirac field.

This treatise represents a significant contribution to the field by integrating quality constraint functions and predicates into Possibility Computation Tree Temporal Logic (PoCTL), thus giving rise to Fuzzy Computation Tree Temporal Logic with Quality Constraints (QFCTL). We provide a comprehensive definition of QFCTL's syntax, conduct an in-depth analysis of its logical characteristics, outline a precise model checking algorithm for QFCTL, and perform a meticulous complexity assessment of said algorithm. Moreover, by enriching QFCTL with a quantitative characteristic predicate operator, we innovate, culminating in the development of an enhanced Fuzzy Computation Tree Temporal Logic with Quality Constraints (QFCTL*). The treatise explores the logical facets of QFCTL*, formulates a bespoke model checking algorithm for QFCTL*, and conducts a rigorous analysis of its algorithmic complexity. To attest to the practical utility and robust expressive power of QFCTL and QFCTL*, we present a model checking example that serves as empirical evidence of the efficacy of the proposed model checking algorithms.

Background: Shortly after the detection of the COVID virus in January 2020 the US Government introduced and enforced a series of restrictions to protect the elderly from a “deadly virus” and the “pandemic of the century”. Persons who disagreed were silenced and punished. Objective: In the 15^th month of COVID epidemic (April 2021), we have access to sufficient statistical data and methods to better understand the nature, origin of the COVID pandemic. It is now possible to reliably evaluate the effectiveness of the restrictions and the human factors / driving forces behind this drastic limitations of our natural freedom in this country. Methods: Publicly available epidemiological and population parameters were collected and analyzed using the ‘political score’ and ‘restriction ranking’ of 50 states and evaluated by simple and usual statistical methods, mainly correlation analyses. The Political Score of the States (D/R) is the ratio of the number of citizens who self-identified as democrats (D) or republicans (R). The political scores of the 50 states altogether defined a wide, continuous scale, the political scale, that could be used to measure (and statistically evaluate) the effect of politics of a state on the numerical parameters of that state, including population and epidemiologic parameters. The COVID Restriction Score of the States were created to rank the states from 1-50, there 1 is the lowest number of restrictions and 50 is the highest number of restrictions applied by the States. It was based on 13 different key metrics. ResultsThis study revealed, that 1) restrictions reduced the number of viral infections, but 2) they totally failed to reduce the number of supposedly COVID related deaths, expressed as mortality, 3) they increased (SIC!) the lethality of coronavirus. The grade of restrictions were/are strongly associated to the 4) left/right political ratio of the States, there States with more democrat citizens practiced more restrictions. It was found that race, religion and Medicare/healthcare spending have significant influence on politic as well as on the grade of restriction orders. Factors moving States toward the political left and harder COVID restrictions have 5) larger ‘non-white’ population, 6) larger number of ‘non-protestant’ believers, 7) larger Jewish population, and 8) more generous Medicare/healthcare spending. It was not possible to see any influence of the size of the 9) senior (65+) population [i.e. those who are allegedly the most vulnerable and are mostly in need of protective restrictions] neither on the States politic nor on the restrictions. Conclusions: The degree of restrictions enforced by different states ware not primarily determined by biological or epidemiological factors (like number of elderly, say 65+ in the state) but by social, political influences instead. Political (a), religious (b) ethnic (c) and economic (d) forces represented the decisive forces on the state’s restrictive orders and not the convincing evidence of the potentially harmful effects of the COVID infection and the well-founded adequacy of the defense against it.

Background: Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor (ETI) is a CFTR modulator therapy approved for people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) who have at least one phe508del mutation. However, its approval in the EU for pwCF with non-phe508del mutations is lacking, with limited data on treatment response in this subgroup. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from six pwCF (ages 6 to 66) with responsive CFTR mutations (M1101K, R347P, 2789+5G>A, G551D) undergoing off-label ETI therapy. Evaluations were conducted at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, assessing lung function (FEV1), sweat chloride levels, BMI, quality of life (CFQ-R), medication satisfaction (TSQM), ENT symptoms (SNOT-22), and physical performance. A control group of four pwCF with classic symptoms and no ETI treatment was included. Results: FEV1 improved significantly after 3 and 6 months (p<0.05) and stabilized by 12 months. Sweat chloride levels decreased significantly, with four pwCF achieving levels below 60 mmol/l. Improvements in ENT and respiratory symptoms, medication satisfaction, and increased BMI were noted. Conclusion: ETI demonstrates high efficacy in selected non-phe508del mutations, offering an effective treatment option that warrants further monitoring and evaluation.

Drawing inspiration from biological brain's energy-efficient information-processing mechanisms, photonic integrated circuits (PIC) have facilitated the development of ultrafast artificial neural networks. This in turn is envisaged to offer potential solutions to the growing demand for artificial intelligence employing machine learning in various domains, from nonlinear optimization and telecommunication to medical diagnosis. At the meantime, silicon photonics has emerged as a mainstream technology for integrated chip based application. However, challenges still need to be addressed in scaling it further for broader applications due to the requirement of co-integration of electronic circuitry for control and calibration. Leveraging physics in algorithms and nanoscale materials holds promise for achieving low-power, miniaturized chips capable of real-time inference and learning. In this back drop, we present the state of the art in neuromorphic photonic computing, focusing primarily on architecture, weighting mechanisms, photonic neurons, and training while giving an over-all view on recent advancements, challenges, and prospects. We also emphasize and high light the need for revolutionary hardware innovations to scale up neuromorphic systems while enhancing energy efficiency and performance.

Considering the large number of candidates in vaccine testing studies against different pathogens and the amount of time spent in the pre- and clinical trials, there is a pressing need to develop an improved in vivo system to quickly screen vaccine candidates. The model of a polyester-polyurethane sponge implant provides a rapid analysis of the specific stimulus-response, allowing the study of a compartmentalized microenvironment. The sponge implant’s defined measurements were standardized as a compartment to assess the immune response triggered by vaccinal antigen. The LBSap vaccine (composed by Leishmania braziliensis antigens associated with saponin adjuvant) was used in the sponge model to assess the antigen-specific immunological biomarker, including memory generation after initial contact with the antigen. Mice strains (Swiss, BALB/c, and C57BL/6) were previously immunized using LBSap vaccine followed by an antigenic booster performed inside the sponge implant. The sponge implants were assessed after 72 hours, and the immune response pattern was analyzed according to leukocyte immunophenotyping and cytokine production. After LBSap vaccination, the innate immune response of the antigenic booster in the sponge implants demonstrated higher levels in the Ly+ neutrophils and CD11c+ dendritic cells with reduced numbers of F4/80+ macrophages. Moreover, the adaptive immune response in Swiss mice demonstrated a high CD3+CD4+ T-cells frequency consisting of an effector memory component in addition to a cytoxicity response (CD3+CD8+ T-cells), displaying the central memory biomarker. The major cell surface biomarker in the BALB/c mice strain was related to CD3+CD4+ effector memory while the increased CD3+CD8+ effector memory was highlighted in C57/BL6. The cytokine profile was more inflammatory in Swiss mice, with the highest levels of IL-6, TNF, IFN-g, and IL-17, while the same cytokine was observed in in C57BL/6 yet modulated by enhanced IL-10 levels. Similar to Swiss mice, BALB/c mice triggered an inflammatory environment after the antigenic booster in the sponge implant with the increased levels in the ILL-6, TNF, and IFN-g. The results highlighted how genetic background can influence populations involved in the immune response and indicated that it is possible to use this model to optimize and monitor the innate and adaptive immune responses of vaccine candidates. In this sense, these results could guide the choice of the most appropriate experimental model in biomolecule tests, considering that the particularities of each mouse strain influenced the dynamics of the immune response.

Consider the ring Be=Fq+uFq+⋯+ue−1Fq, ue=u (e≥2), where Fq denotes the finite field having q=pm elements (for m≥1 and a prime p), and q≡1(mode−1). Skew constacyclic codes over Be are studied in this paper. We present their generator polynomial and describe the criteria for their complementary duality. Moreover, we derive criteria for these codes to contain their dual and obtain quantum codes. Additionally, we establish a Gray map that preserves duality and investigate its properties. We also take into account additive skew constacyclic codes for this purpose and also derive criteria for the complementary duality of these codes. Finally, we provide several LCD and quantum codes (MDS/ near MDS). The latter are compared with the quantum codes obtained in the recent literature.

A Gram-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped and spore forming bacterium strain designation B190/17, was isolated from an air monitoring sample of a Brazilian immunobiological production facility in 2017. The strain was not identifiable by biochemical methodology VITEK® 2 or by MALDI-TOF MS with VITEK® MS RUO and MALDI Biotyper®. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed 98.51% similarity with Bacillus wudalianchiensis FJAT 27215T, 98.28% with ‘Bacillus aerolatus’ CX 253T, 97.96% with Bacillus badius MTCC 1458T, 97.63% with Bacillus xiapuensis FJAT 46582T and 97.21% with Bacillus thermotolerans SGZ8T. Biochemical data showed the strain was alanine arylamidase, Ala-Phe-Pro arylamidase, ELLMAN, leucine arylamidase, phenyalanine arylamidase and tyrosine arylamidase positive. The genomic DNA G+C% content of B190/17 was 41.6 mol%. The phylogenetic, genomic taxonomy and biochemical tests suggested that B190/17 represents a novel species and should be classified as the type strain of a novel Bacillus species. The name Bacillus lumedeirus sp. nov. is proposed. After characterization, B190/17 was added to the MALDI Biotyper® database as Bacillus lumedeirus sp. nov.

Despite their increasing prevalence epidemiological data on thoracic spine injuries(TSI) is under-presented in the literature. Furthermore, these studies fail to correlatemechanisms of injury to the specific spinal regions injured. Team ball sports appear tobe common activities undertaken in these age groups. A narrative review wasconducted to understand the aetiology of traumatic TSI, with a focus on sporting causes in youth populations. A literature search was conducted through various databases (from inception to April 2024) such as PubMed, CINAHL, Medline, ProQuest Central, Science Direct and SPORTDiscus. Seven studies, including 1670 patients were included in the dataset. TSI, particularly fractures, were found to be more common in adolescent age groups. Common sporting causes of spinal trauma included equestrian and team ball/contact sports. This review found few studies failed to correlate the mechanism of injury and the specific spinal level affected, supporting the need for further research.

The retail industry's shift from traditional to online platforms has heightened the need for effective search engine optimization (SEO) strategies to improve digital marketing outcomes. SEO involves optimizing a website's technical and content features to increase its visibility in search engine results, potentially driving traffic, enhancing brand awareness, and boosting revenue. This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of various SEO tactics on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the retail sector, focusing on key performance metrics such as website traffic, search engine rankings, conversion rates, and overall business growth. A comprehensive search was conducted across major academic databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, resulting in 102 studies published between 2014 and 2024. The methodological approach utilized both narrative synthesis and quantitative analysis to evaluate the quality and findings of the selected studies, following PRISMA2020 guidelines. The analysis shows that effective SEO practices, such as robust content marketing, technical SEO enhancements, and precise keyword optimization, lead to significant improvements in digital performance metrics. Specifically, up to a 30% increase in website traffic was observed, and keyword optimization improved click-through rates by 20% to 40%. The impact on conversion rates was more variable, with improvements ranging from 10% to 25%, influenced by factors like SEO quality and market conditions. Furthermore, integrating SEO with digital marketing strategies within e-business models enhanced operational efficiency by up to 15% and increased revenue growth by 25%. However, biases in the literature, such as the selective reporting of positive outcomes, may affect the overall reliability of these findings. While SEO strategies effectively drive website traffic and improve search engine rankings, their direct influence on conversion rates is less consistent. A balanced approach, combining SEO practices with strategic IT alignment, is crucial for sustained business success in the retail industry. Future research should address the variability in conversion outcomes and investigate the conditions under which SEO tactics are most effective.

Sacha Inchi Oil Press-Cake (SIPC), a by-product of oil processing, was used to produce a protein concentrate (SPC) which was subsequently hydrolyzed by standardized static INFOGEST 2.0 protocol. This study aimed to integrate in vitro, ex vivo and in silico methods to evaluate the release of antioxidant peptides during gastrointestinal digestion. In vitro and ex vivo methods were used to investigate the antioxidant potential of SPC digests. Bioinformatics tools (find-pep-seq, AnOxPP, AnOxPePred-1.0, HLP, PlifePred and SwissADME) were employed to characterize antioxidant peptides. The gastric and intestinal digests exhibited higher ABTS and ORAC values than those exhibited by SPC. Under basal conditions, gastric digest fractions GD1, GD2, and GD3 (&lt;3, 3-10, and &gt;10 kDa, respectively), separated by ultrafiltration, significantly reduced ROS levels in RAW264.7 macrophages, while under LPS stimulation, GD1 (16 µg/mL) and GD2 (500 and 1000 µg/mL) reversed the induced damage. From the de novo peptidome determined, 416 peptides were selected based on their resistance to digestion. Through in silico tools, 315 resistant peptides were identified as antioxidants. Despite low bioavailability indices predicted, the peptides SVMGPYYNSK, EWGGGGCGGGGGVSSLR, RHWLPR, LQDWYDK, and ALEETNYELEK showed potential use for extracellular targets and drug delivery systems. This research contributes to ongoing efforts to valorize agro-industrial by-products, promoting a circular economy through the integration of sustainable practices in food production and related health applications.

Soil quality offers a holistic approach to understanding the relationships between soil’s biological, chemical, and physical properties, which is crucial for the sustainable land use and the management of non-renewable soil resources. This study evaluates the impact of land use on 23 physicals, chemicals, and biologicals soil quality indicators (SQIs) across five land uses of the Mediterranean agro-ecosystems: forest, olive groves, wheat fields, and a corn / wheat crop rotation system. Over two consecutive years, seasonal soil samplings were conducted across three conventionally farmed fields for each land use. Through multivariate analysis, five key soil quality factors—organic matter, microbial biomass, nutrients, the C/N ratio, and compaction—were identified as reflective alterations in soil quality due to land use change. Discriminant analysis revealed the soil properties of total nitrogen (Ntot) and the C/N ratio, which highlights the quantity and quality of soil organic matter, as particularly sensitive indicators of soil quality changes in Mediterranean agroecosystems incorporating most of the information derived from the entire set of initials SQIs. These proposed indicators offer a simplified yet effective means of assessing soil resource sustainability in the Mediterranean agroecosystems, providing practical tools for monitoring and managing soil quality.

Brain metastasis is a severe and complicated cancer that requires timely screening and follow-up approaches using precise segmentation techniques for effective surgical intervention, radiation therapy, or monitoring the disease progression. In this study, we explore the efficacy of transfer learning in improving the automatic segmentation of brain metastases on Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans with the subsequent possibility of using it in clinical practice for preventive examinations and remote diagnostics. We train three deep learning models on a public dataset from the Brain Tumor Segmentation 2024 Challenge, then fine-tune these pretrained models on a small private dataset and compare them to models trained on private data from scratch. The results indicate that models utilizing transfer learning achieve superior accuracy and generalization in segmenting brain metastases. We also observed that the custom loss function significantly enhances performance compared to the default configuration. This study highlights the importance of leveraging transfer learning in medical imaging to address challenges associated with small, specialized datasets.

Wearable smart devices have become ubiquitous in modern society, extensively researched for their health monitoring capabilities and convenience features. However, the "wearability" of these devices remains a relatively understudied area, particularly in terms of design informed by clinical trials. While wearable devices hold significant potential to enhance daily life, it is crucial to understand and validate design factors influencing their comfort, usability, and integration into everyday routines. This review aimed to evaluate the “wearability” of smart devices through a mixed-methods scoping review of the literature. By analyzing studies on comfort, usability, and daily integration, it sought to identify design improvements and research gaps to enhance user experience and system design. From 130 publications (1998-2024), 19 were included. The review revealed that most findings were qualitative, lacking the quantitative studies needed for validated design criteria. While qualitative data provides rich insights, the absence of quantitative research limits a comprehensive understanding of design issues in the field. This underscores the need for future studies to use quantitative methodologies to better assess and validate design guidance, improving wearability.

The discharge of industrial effluents containing toxic heavy metals in water sources has serious consequences for human health and the environment, and biosorption appears to be an environmental-friendly and cost-effective alternative that can be used for wastewater treatment. The use of different types of agricultural waste as biosorbents for the removal of toxic heavy metals, although an alternative, is quite difficult to apply in practice because these wastes have many other uses. Based on these considerations, in this study, soybean biomass (SB), soybean waste biomass obtained from oil extraction (SBW) and biochar obtained from soybean waste pyrolysis (BC-SBW) were testes as biosorbents form the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions, in batch systems. Under optimal conditions (pH = 5.4, 4.0 g biosorbent/L, room temperature (25 ± 1 C), contact time = 180 min), the biosorption capacity increase in the order: SB < SBW < BC-SBW for both metal ions (Pb(II) ions (69.43 mg/g < 99.81 mg/g < 116.83 mg/g) and Cd(II) ions (25.63 mg/g < 36.12 mg/g < 49.10 mg/g)), indicating that BC-SBW has the highest efficiency in removing toxic heavy metals. In addition, experiments on wastewater samples have shown that, in addition to significant reducing the content of heavy metals, BC-SBW also significant improved other quality indicators (such as: pH, TSM, CCO-Cr, CBO5), compared to the other biosorbents (SB and SBW). Quantitative evaluation of the biosorptive performance of each biosorbent (SB, SBW and BC-SBW) shows that BC-SBW has a real chance of being used on an industrial scale for wastewater treatment. All these aspects allowed the development of a circular approach for the use of soybean biomass in the removal processes of toxic heavy metals. This approach minimizes the shortcomings of using biomass as a biosorbent and increase the chance of using these materials in industrial practice.

Rice blast is the most harmful disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, leading to yield loss. The aim of the work is to improve resistance of rice to blast by introducing and pyramiding genes using conventional breeding technique and modern MAS analysis. Pyramiding is the combination of several resistance genes in one genotype, in this case it improves the resistance of rice to pathogens. MAS analysis revealed that 3 out of 4 studied domestic high-yielding rice cultivars (Bakanasski, Aisaule and Aru) contain 1 blast resistance gene (Pi-2). It was discovered 7 pyramidal lines with the introduction of a combination of 2 blast resistance genes (Pi-1 and Pi-ta) into 6 hybrids and 3 genes (Pi-1, Pi-33 and Pi-ta) into 1 line. Phytopathological test of local cultivars and pyramidal lines of rice showed that 3 out of 7 pyramidal lines have moderate resistance: 2 lines (F2 Bakanasski/7667 (var. vulgaris Koern.) and F2 Aisaule/7664 (var. italica Alef.)), containing 2 resistance genes (Pi-1 and Pi-ta) and 1 line – F2 Aisaule/7689 (var. zeravschanica Brsch.), carrying 3 genes (Pi-1, Pi-33 and Pi-ta), while the local cultivars Bakanasski, Aisaule and Aru are susceptible. As a result, the blast resistance of rice was improved by creating pyramidal lines. Pyramided lines can be used for germplasm exchange and in rice breeding programs to improve blast resistance in rice.

Background: Patients undergoing brain tumor resection experience neurological and cognitive (i.e., neurocognitive) changes reflected in altered performance on neuropsychological tests. These changes can be difficult to explain or predict. Brain connectivity, measured with neuroimaging, offers one potential model for examining these changes. In this study, we evaluated whether longitudinal changes in brain connectivity correlated with changes in neurocognitive abilities in patients before and after brain tumor resection. Methods: Patients underwent functional and diffusion MR scanning and neuropsychological evaluation before tumor resection followed by repeat scanning and evaluation two weeks post-resection. Using this functional and diffusion imaging data, we measured changes in the topology of the functional and structural networks. From the neuropsychological testing scores, we derived a composite score that described a patient’s overall level of neurocognitive functioning. We then used a multiple linear regression model to test whether structural and functional connectivity measures were correlated with changes in composite scores. Results: Multiple linear regression on 21 subjects showed that connectivity changes were highly correlated with changes in neuropsychological evaluation scores (R² adjusted = 0.79, p<0.001). Changes in functional local efficiency (p<0.001) and global efficiency (p<0.05) were inversely correlated with changes in composite score, while changes in modularity (p<0.01) as well as the patient’s age (p<0.05) were directly correlated with changes in composite score. Conclusion: Short interval changes in brain connectivity markers were strongly correlated with changes in the composite neuropsychological test scores in brain tumor resection patients. Our findings support the need for further exploration of brain connectivity as a biomarker relevant to brain tumor patients.

The theories of Evolution and Big Bang have brought a major impact upon the scientific and societal perception upon the origins, abilities and roles of mankind on Earth. It is conclusively evident that Mother Nature and the physical realm is autonomous and all phenomena in the world occur without an imposition against the “free will” of such events and patterns. Nevertheless, this extent of freedom does not imply that life on Earth represents an accident and has no purpose. By careful analysis of ancient religious texts, it can be suggested even otherwise, that it is especially free will that is offered as a gift from outside of the physical dimensions of existence, with the purpose of a continuous edification and improvement of the overall life conditions and of the human perception. It may be that the multi-generational focus on improvement and progress have been misattributed as a long-term evolution of species, that humans came from animal ancestors and that there is a blurred line associating humans with animals. Furthermore, it may be that scientists based their suggestions that no outside Creator would have brought the Earth into existence on physical perspectives, when the extra-dimensional process of Creation implies that all elements of the physical existence undergo a process of Creation from the outside, where time, space and physical matter do not exist, in spite of such elements possibly reflecting unseen elements of the meta-physical world. Finally, there is the following example that deserves attention within the scientific community; just because all living cells - human, animal and plant - contain DNA chromosomes, ribosomes, mitochondria and a plasma membrane, it does not indicate that humans are animals, just as this does not indicate that plants are animals. In Science, there is a golden statement, that correlation does not imply causation. This example is in complete agreement with the verses of the Book of Genesis in the Holy Scriptures regarding the origins of life; namely, that animals could have been created by an Author of all life on Earth so that man would experience companionship. Another major accordance with the teachings of the Holy Scriptures is the fact that life emerged from the water, and not from the soil, although the soil constituted the second principal means of the commencement and extension of life. Namely, after life first emerged in the seas and the oceans from bacteria, a few bacteria were passed from the marine water into the nearby soil on islands and surrounding land through the circulatory air above the sea level. Afterward, the first life forms emerged from the soil, via the transferred bacteria. Eastern Orthodox Christianity regards water as the principal environment of both physical and spiritual birth. Overall, an improved scientific perception of the timeline of life on Earth may be reached via an approach that combines molecular biology with quantum physics, given that the three layers of Science - Biology, Chemistry and Physics - together with their foundational layer of Mathematics, are in fact situated in a relationship of complete harmony.

A novel experimental technique, quasi-equilibrated temperature-programmed desorption and adsorption (QE-TPDA) was used to study the water sorption properties and hydrothermal stability of aluminum trimesate MIL-96 and aluminum isophthalate CAU-10, which have been selected due to their remarkable sorption properties. The QE-TPDA profiles of water observed for MIL-96 and CAU-10 confirmed the hydrophilic nature of these materials. Complex QE-TPDA profiles indicate that water sorption in MIL-96 follows a three-step pore filling mechanism. The shape of single desorption peaks in the QE-TPDA profiles for CAU-10 confirms that water sorption involves a reversible phase transition. Based on the QE-TPDA profiles, the water adsorption heat were determined: 45-46 kJ/mol for CAU-10 and 43-56 kJ/mol for MIL-96, in the latter case depending on the adsorption extent. Hydrothermal stability tests revealed that MIL-96 retained its stable porosity-related sorption capacity for water after hydrothermal treatment up to 290°C. Gradual changes in the QE-TPDA profiles due to the hydrothermal treatment above 290°C, with decreasing the high-temperature desorption peak and increasing the low-temperature one, indicate minor structural changes occurring in this material. Only after 410° C treatment was fast degradation of MIL-96 observed. CAU-10 exhibited high and unchanged hydrothermal stability up to 400°C.

Financial Market Infrastructures (FMIs) are crucial for the efficient operation of financial markets. However, studies focusing on Chinese FMIs are limited. Following the release of a draft regulation on Chinese FMIs in December 2022, this study, building on Zhang and Yin (2023), provides an updated analysis. It introduces non-central bank affiliated FMIs with the latest data, explores the evolution of regulatory reforms, and examines the newly-released regulations. In particular, it offers a critical review of specific regulations and their implications for China's recent policy shift towards prioritizing security and establishing financial dominance. Finally, the study outlines a research agenda for future investigations.

The growing number of algorithmic decision-making environments, which blend machine and bounded human rationality, strengthen the need for a holistic performance assessment of such systems. Indeed, this combination amplifies the risk of local rationality, necessitating a robust evaluation framework. We propose a novel simulation-based model to quantify algorithmic interventions within organisational contexts, combining causal modelling and data science algorithms. To test our framework's viability, we present a case study based on a bike-share system focusing on inventory balancing through crowdsourced user actions. Utilising New York's Citi Bike service data, we highlight the frequent misalignment between incentives and their necessity. Our model examines the interaction dynamics between user and service provider rule-driven responses and algorithms predicting flow rates. This examination demonstrates why these dynamics are necessary for devising effective incentive policies. The study showcases how sophisticated machine learning models, with the ability to forecast underlying market demands unconstrained by historical supply issues, can cause imbalances that induce user behaviour, potentially spoiling plans without timely interventions. Our approach allows problems to surface during the design phase, potentially avoiding costly deployment errors in the joint performance of human and AI decision-makers.
