The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices on Linux platforms has heightened concerns regarding vulnerability to malware attacks. This paper introduces a novel approach to investigating the behavior of Linux IoT malware by examining syscalls and library syscall wrappers extracted through static analysis of binaries, as opposed to the conventional method of using dynamic analysis for syscall extraction. We rank and categorize Linux system calls based on their security significance, focusing on understanding malware intent without execution.Feature analysis of the assigned syscall categories and risk ranking is conducted with statistical tests to validate their effectiveness and reliability in differentiating between malware and benign binaries. Our findings demonstrate that potential threats can be reliably identified with an F1 score of 96.86%, solely by analyzing syscalls and library syscall wrappers. This method can augment traditional static analysis, providing an effective preemptive measure to enhance Linux malware analysis. This research highlights the importance of static analysis in strengthening IoT systems against emerging malware threats.

As split learning (SL) becomes popular for addressing data privacy and resource limitation issues in edge model training process, it is crucial to pre-validate whether the extensive use of wireless and computing resources in SL can achieve the expected training latency and convergence. While digital twin network (DTN) can potentially estimate network strategy performance in pre-validation environments, they are still in their infancy for SL tasks, facing challenges like unknown non-i.i.d. data distributions, inaccurate channel states, and misreport resource availability across devices. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a TransNeural algorithm for DTN pre-validation environment to estimate SL latency and convergence. First, the TransNeural algorithm integrates transformers to efficiently model data similarities between different devices, considering different data distributions and device participate sequence greatly influence SL training convergence. Second, it leverages neural network to automatically establish the complex relationships between SL latency and convergence with data distributions, wireless and computing resources, dataset sizes, and training iterations. Deviations in user reports are also accounted for in the estimation process. Simulations show that the TransNeural algorithm improves latency estimation accuracy by 13.44% and convergence estimation accuracy by 116.74% compared to traditional equation-based methods.

Conclusions: The quantitative method provides a large-scale overview of the biometry measurements of an entire practice. Image audits can then be focused on sonographers whose measurements are outliers, avoiding the time, complexity, and expense of auditing those whose measurements fall within the expected range. We encourage commercial software developers to include tools in their ultrasound reporting software to facilitate such quantitative review.

The thermal conditions of transitional (ranging from warm to cold) coldwater streams impact the ranges and resource availabilities for biota inhabiting these lotic systems. With ongoing climate change and increasing land modifications, thermal boundaries may shift, altering thermal transition zones and their biotic communities. The objective of this study was to investigate the condition of trout across three forks of the Whitewater River catchment and to investigate factors influencing fish community composition and distribution. Each fork was characterized into three separate sections: headwater (coolwater), middle (warmwater), and lower (coldwater). Springs were identified throughout each fork, with greatest concentrations in the lower sections of each fork. Using single-pass electrofishing, we sampled 61 sites across the three forks in the Whitewater River system (North = 21 sites, Middle = 19, South = 21), and catch statistics were used to calculate diversity, trout abundance, and trout condition. In general, diversity increased, and trout were healthier but less abundant in middle and headwater sections, whereas diversity decreased slightly, trout condition decreased, and trout abundance increased in lower reaches, with changes differing somewhat among forks. Canonical correlation analysis had strong significant correlations showing simpson diversity and condition increase going upstream with high non trout abundance and catch rates while trout catch rates and reach width decrease. The Whitewater River is a catchment exhibiting transitional temperature-pattern characteristics with generally low fish community diversity and trout conditions that range from thin, normal, and robust. Dominated by a changing landscape (agriculture) and intensifying climate change, we may begin to see stream temperatures increase along with species diversity. Understanding how spring temperature influences species composition and distribution can bring potential stressors to light increasing our understanding of thermal conditions and to help mitigate the negative impacts from land use and climate change.

Simple Summary: Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer among women. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) accounts for 15–20% of newly diagnosed breast cancers and has the worst prognosis. However, TNBC patients are not a homogeneous group, and there are differences in the course of the disease as well as in response to treatment. For this reason, differentiation of subtypes of this tumor is important for optimal therapeutic decision and risk prediction. The presented study focuses on the expression of the androgen receptor (AR) and the infiltration of T-lymphocytes in the tumor stroma (TILs) of TNBC patients. Correlation of these tested biomarkers with standard prognostic factors. Defining new prognostic factors for 3-year overall survival (OS). Abstract: Background: Analysis of the practical benefit of testing the expression of AR and the TILs in patients with TNBC and their correlation with standard prognostic factors. Methods: The study group consisted of 86 female patients treated for TNBC. T-lymphocyte infiltration was examined in H+E staining. AR expression, CD8 and CD4 T-lymphocytes were evaluated in immunohistochemistry. Results: Significantly negative correlation was found between AR expression and the CD8 T-lymphocyte infiltration levels. A significant negative correlation was found between the AR expression and G and Ki 67, and a positive correlation between the TILs levels and G and Ki 67. Patients with AR expression and low TILs levels had the highest percentage of diagnosed distant metastases and 3-years OS. Patients with high TILs no distant metastases or deaths were diagnosed. The level of TILs turned out to be a significant independent prognostic factor. Conclusions: Based on the assessment of AR expression and TILs infiltration, the group of highest and lowest risk was determined. The prognostic factor of known parameters such as TNM and a new factor - TILs was confirmed. On the other hand, parameters such as G and Ki 67 and the tested factor - AR had no effect on the prognosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization and continues as one of the world’s top ten causes of death. TB diagnosis is more critical in developing countries where demanded infrastructure for detection, and treatment complicates the efforts against the disease. These aspects related to limited resources are significant, especially in areas away from the main cities, with few mechanisms to make a timely diagnosis that contributes to successfully addressing the possible patients. Artificial intelligence has begun to be essential in providing additional strategies in the diagnosis processes for health professionals’ support. This paper uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques to create models that can supply TB diagnosis when the needed infrastructure is unavailable. Two different sources were explored: text extracted from electronic medical records (EMR) and patient clinical data (CD). Four proposals using five different machine learning models were implemented. The first two models employed ML and each data source independently. Then, two additional approaches developed a data fusion from both sources. This strategy’s employment was analyzed with physicians according to their pertinence in the process and understanding of the EMR. Finally, the results of the data fusion were compared to each source, obtaining better performance at using only the CD, where an area under the ROC curve of 69.9±2.3% was obtained. However, the advantage of analyzing physician’s reports is the availability of this information contrasted to clinical-specific data, which can be more useful in places far from the main cities without enough basic structure for its obtaining.

To guide the design and optimization of King Grass (KG) harvesting machinery, this paper studied the cutting characteristics of KG stalks under different physical properties and mechanical parameters. A cutting device that can achieve different parameter adjustments was designed, and indoor cutting experiments were conducted. The results of the single factor experiment show that with the increase of moisture content and stalk height, the ultimate shear stress (USS) and unit-area cutting energy consumption (UCEC) gradually decrease. The optimal range of blade clearance for cutting KG stalks is 2.0-4.0 mm. The optimal value range for oblique cutting angle is 10 ° -40 °. The reasonable range of skew cutting angle is 10 °-20 °. The optimal range for sliding cutting angle is 20 ° - 40 °. The response surface methodology was used to conduct parameter optimization experiments. The regression models were established for various factors and the USS, as well as the UCEC. The optimal combination of cutting parameters has been determined. Under this parameter setting, the USS is 0.4 MPa and UCEC is 3.5 mJ/mm2. The average relative errors between the predicted and experimental values of USS and UCEC were 6.34% and 4.71%, respectively. This indicates that the model can correct reflect the mathematical relationship between various factors and USS and UCEC. This study provides theoretical support for the design of KG harvesting machinery.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the histological and biochemical ef-fects of capsaicin on implant osseointegration and oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar albino rats weighing between 250 and 300 grams were used in this study. Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into three equal groups: implant + control (n= 8), implant + capsai-cin-1 (n= 8), and implant + capsaicin-2 (n= 8). 2.5 mm diameter and 4 mm length titanium im-plants were surgically integrated into the corticocancellous bone parts of the femurs. In the treatment groups, rats were injected intraperitoneally with 25 mg/kg (implant + capsaicin-1) and 50 mg/kg (implant + capsaicin-2) of capsaicin. No additional applications were made in the con-trol group. Three rats in totally were died during and after the experiment, as a result of the an-alyzes performed on 21 animals. Results: The highest total antioxidant status value was found in capsaicin dose 2, according to the analysis. The control group had the highest total oxidant status and oxidative stress index values, while group 2 of capsaicin had the lowest. After analysis, we found that there was no observed positive effect on osteointegration in this study (p> 0.05), alt-hough the bone implant connection was higher in the groups treated with capsaicin. Conclusi-ons: A positive effect on osteointegration was not observed in this study. This may be due to os-teaclast activation. However it was found that it has a positive effect on oxidative stress. We have investigated the influence of the relative proportions of glass formers in a series of lithium alumino-borosilicate glasses with respect to electrical conductivity () and glass transition temperature (Tg) as functions of glass structure, as determined by Raman spectroscopy. The ternary lithium alumino-borate glass exhibits the highest  and lowest Tg among all the compositions of the glass series, 30Li2O•3Al2O3• (67-x) B2O3•xSiO2. However, as B2O3 is replaced by SiO2, a shallow minimum in  as well as a shallow maximum in Tg are observed near x = 27, where the Raman spectra indicate isolated diborate/tetraborate/orthoborate groups are being progressively replaced by danburite/reedmergnerite-like borosilicate network units. Overall, as the glasses become silica-rich,  is minimized, while Tg is maximized. In general, these findings show correlations among Tg, (sensitive to network polymerization),  (proportional to ionic mobility), and the different borate and silicate glass structural units as determined by Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrate the absence of appreciable crystallinity in the glasses investigated. However, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of HF-etched samples showed that glasses, and especially the borate-rich compositions comprise two distinct glassy phases. The isolated phase is 25-100 nm in diameter, dispersed evenly in a glassy matrix.

The rise in IoT (Internet of Things) devices poses a significant security challenge. Maintaining privacy and ensuring anonymity within the system is a sought-after feature with inevitable trade-offs, such as scalability and increased complexity, making it incredibly challenging to handle. To tackle this, we introduce our proposed work for managing IoT devices using Hyperledger fabric. We integrated our system on the blockchain with a closed-circuit television (CCTV) security camera fixed at a rental property. The CCTV security camera redirects its feed whenever a new renter walks in. We have introduced the web token for authentication from the renter to the owner. Our contributions include the proposition of efficient framework architecture, a novel chain code algorithm, and stealth addresses with modified ring signatures. We performed different analyses to show the system's throughput and latency through stress testing. We have shown the advantages of the proposed architectures by comparing similar existing schemes. Our proposed scheme enhances the security of blockchain-enabled IoT devices and mitigates the single point of failure issue. Our future work includes scaling it up to cater to the needs of the healthcare system.

Transplanted organs experience several episodes of ischemia and Ischemia-reperfusion. The graft injury resulting from ischemia-reperfusion (IRI) remains a significant obstacle to the successful survival of transplanted grafts. Temperature plays an important role in cellular metabolic rates since biochemical reactions are highly temperature dependent. Therefore, ischemia-triggered degradative reactions could be mitigated by lowering temperature. Whether a local hypothermia on liver before blockage of blood flow protects liver grafts against IRI has not been investigated. In this study, we applied local hypothermia to mouse donor livers for a specific duration before stopping blood flow to liver lobes, a procedure called "liver precooling." Mouse donor liver temperature in control groups was controlled at 37ºC. Subsequently, the liver donors were preserved in cold University of Wisconsin solution for various durations followed by orthotopic liver transplantation. Liver graft injury, function and inflammation were assessed at 1- and 2-days post-transplantation. Liver precooling exhibited a significant improvement in graft function, revealing more than a 47% decrease in plasma aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, coupled with a remarkable reduction of approximately 50% in liver graft histological damage compared to the control group. The protective effects of liver precooling were associated with the preservation of mitochondrial function, substantial reduction in hepatocyte cell death, and a significantly attenuated inflammatory response. A retrospective analysis of patient data revealed a close correlation between hypothermia and enhanced liver graft function. Taken together, reduction of the cellular metabolism and enzymatic activity to a minimum level before ischemia protects against IRI during transplantation.

This study investigated how different gamification elements in mobile apps influence users' basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) and subsequent engagement outcomes. Survey data was analyzed using PLS-SEM. Social gamification elements enhanced autonomy and competence needs, while immersive elements boosted autonomy and relatedness. Achievement/progression components increased competence and relatedness perceptions. Interestingly, personal traits did not significantly impact psychological needs. Crucially, satisfying autonomy and relatedness predicted higher user satisfaction and continued usage intentions, highlighting their importance for sustained engagement. Competence influenced satisfaction but not continuance intention. The findings demonstrate the motivational roles of distinct gamification features in fostering need-supportive experiences. Designers should incorporate varied social, immersive, and achievement components to address users' psychological requirements holistically. Prioritizing autonomy and relatedness support appears vital for achieving enjoyable, self-motivated, and persistent user engagement across gamified systems and domains. The study provides actionable insights for optimizing motivational affordances through psychologically-informed gamification implementations.

The COLOSS research association has been assessing honey bee colony losses, associated risk factors and management, focusing on Western countries but with a progressive international expansion. Here, we report the first survey on the loss rates of colonies in 2022/23 in Ethiopia using COLOSS monitoring survey tools. A face-to-face interview questionnaire survey was conducted on 64 beekeepers selected from Oromia and Tigray regions. This covered 1,713 honey bee colonies distributed in 68 apiaries. The percentages of colonies lost were significantly different between Oromia (24.1%) and Tigray (66.4%) regions. Colony losses were attributed as unsolvable queen problems (8% in Oromia; 10% in Tigray), natural disaster (32%; 82%), and empty hives or dead colonies (60%; 8%). Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a common chronic allergic skin disease. In our previous study, we isolated two probiotic strains, Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris MP01 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei MP02, from Mongolian fermented milk. These strains demonstrated potential in alleviating symptoms similar to AD and reducing specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in a mouse model of AD. Building upon this discovery, our current investigation sought to evaluate the therapeutic potential of these probiotics for treating CAD. We conducted an open-label, single-arm clinical trial where dogs diagnosed with AD were administered LCP capsules containing Lc. cremoris subsp. cremoris MP01 and L. paracasei subsp. paracasei MP02 once daily for 60 days. Stool, skin swab, and venous blood specimens were collected at three intervals: before, and after 30 and 60 days of LCP intervention. The skin and fecal microbiomes were analyzed using full-length 16S rRNA sequencing. After 60 days of LCP intervention, notable improvements were observed in skin lesions and scratching behaviors, accompanied by reductions in both the Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index (CADESI) and the Pruritus Visual Analogue Scale (PVAS) scores. Additionally, LCP intervention resulted in significant reductions in IgE levels and modulation in type 1 T helper (Th1)/ type 2 T helper cells (Th2)-related cytokine secretion. Microbiota analysis unveiled changes in the composition of both skin and gut microbiotas, including reductions in Shigella flexneri on the skin and Romboutsia in the gut. Levels of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) increased following the 60-days of LCP intervention. These effects were likely mediated by alterations in gut microbiota and the upregulation of SCFA levels, which subsequently reduced the secretion of allergy-related IgE. Collectively, these mechanisms contributed to alleviating CAD symptoms, regulating skin microbiota composition, and reducing the adherence and invasion of environmental microbes and pathogens. Overall, our findings highlight the promising therapeutic potential of the Lc. cremoris subsp. cremoris MP01 and L. paracasei subsp. paracasei MP02 mixture as an effective strategy for managing CAD in dogs.

Coronaviruses cause infections in humans and diverse species of animals and birds with a global distribution. Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) produces predominantly two forms of disease in cattle, a respiratory form, and a gastrointestinal form. All age groups of cattle are affected by the respiratory form of coronavirus whereas the gastroenteric form causes neonatal diarrhea or calf scour in young cattle and winter dysentery in adult cattle. The tremendous impacts of bovine respiratory disease and the associated losses are well-documented and underscores the importance of this pathogen. Beyond this, studies have demonstrated significant impacts on milk production associated with outbreaks of winter dysentery, with up to a 30% decrease in milk yield. Research data so far have shown that the viral structure or strain is not a determinant of tissue tropism and clinical form of the disease. In North America, BCoV was identified for the first time in 1972, and it continues to be a significant economic concern for the cattle industry. The virus is classified under Coronaviridae family, Betacoronavirus genus and Betacorovirus 1 species. A number of conventional and molecular diagnostic assays are available for the detection of BCoV from clinical samples. Conventional assays for BCoV detection include virus isolation, which is challenging from clinical samples, electron microscopy, fluorescent antibody assays, and various immunoassays. Molecular tests are mainly based on nucleic acid detection and predominantly include conventional and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Isothermal amplification assays and genome sequencing have also been used increasingly in recent years for the detection and identification of BCoV. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification, helicase-dependent amplification, recombinase polymerase amplification, and multienzyme isothermal rapid amplification are some examples of the isothermal amplification assays for used BCoV. Point-of-care testing has gained some popularity recently as they can offer user-friendly testing on the farm (barn-side). The present study reviewed literature on coronavirus infections in cattle from the last three and a half decades and presents information mainly on the current and advancing diagnostics in addition to epidemiology, clinical presentations, and the impact of the disease on the cattle industry.

Aggregation of the protein α-Synuclein (αSyn) is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and multiple systems atrophy, and alleviating the extent of αSyn pathology is an attractive strategy against neurodegeneration. The engineered binding protein β-wrapin AS69 binds monomeric αSyn. AS69 reduces primary and secondary nucleation as well as fibril elongation in vitro. It also mitigates aSyn pathology in a mouse model based on intrastriatal injection of aSyn pre-formed fibrils (PFF). Since the PFF-based model does not represent all aspects of PD, we tested here whether AS69 can reduce neurodegeneration resulting from αSyn overexpression. Human A53T-αSyn was overexpressed in the mouse Substantia nigra (SN) by using recombinant adeno-associated viral vector (rAAV). AS69 was also expressed by rAAV transduction. Behavioral tests and immunofluorescence stainings were used as outcomes.Transduction with rAAV-αSyn resulted in αSyn pathology as reported by phospho-αSyn staining and caused degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the SN. The co-expression of rAAV-AS69 did not reduce αSyn pathology or degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. We conclude that αSyn monomer binding by rAAV-AS69 was insufficient to protect from aSyn pathology resulting from αSyn overexpression.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) offer potentials for sustainable semiconductor devices due to their low cost, and inherent molecular self-assembly. Enhanced crystallinity and molecular orientation in thin films of solution-processable CPs have significantly improved organic electronic device per-formance. In this work, three methods namely spin-coating, dip-coating, and unidirectional float-ing-film transfer method (UFTM) were utilized with their parametric optimization for fabricating RR-P3HT films. These films were then utilized for their characterization via optical and micro-structural analysis to elucidate dominant roles of molecular orientation, and crystallinity in con-trolling charge transport in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). OFETs fabricated by RR-P3HT thin films using spin-coating and dip-coating displayed field-effect mobility (μ) of 8.0 × 10-4 cm2V-1s-1 and 1.3 × 10-3 cm2V-1s-1, respectively. This two-time enhancement in (µ for dip-coated films was attributed to its enhanced crystallinity. Interestingly, UFTM films based OFETs demon-strated μ of 7.0 × 10-2 cm2V-1s-1, >100 times increment as compared to its spin-coated counterpart This superior device performance is attributed to synergistic influence of higher crystallinity and molecular orientation. Since the crystallinity of dip-coated and UFTM-thin films are similar ~50 times improved µ of UFTM thin films suggest a dominant role of molecular orientation as com-pared to crystallinity in controlling the charge transport.

Given the long-standing debate about the nature of the concept of disease, the objective of this study was to understand how doctors categorize a condition as a disease or not and what kind of information they use. A survey with a set of clinical vignettes was designed, and a group of physicians were asked to interpret those situations as a disease or not and to motivate their choice with a short written text. Thematic analysis of the answers resulted in four themes: the temporal dimension of a disease, reification of disease, disease as an existential condition, and disease as a motivation to action. The respondents’ interpretations were very heterogeneous, supporting the idea that physicians do not share a common prototypical concept of disease. An interpretation of these results according to a critical realist and systemic approach suggested that the doctor-patient relationship is the context able to influence the interpretation of a condition as a disease or not as the final outcome of a process in which both objective, subjective, and socially mediated elements are taken into consideration.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene and known to be a leading cause of inherited intellectual disability globally. It results in a range of intellectual, developmental, and behavioral problems. Fragile X premutation associated conditions (FXPAC), also caused by a smaller CGG expansion (55 to 200 CGG repeats) in the FMR1 gene, is linked to other conditions that increase morbidity and mortality for affected persons. Limited research has been conducted on the burden, characteristics, diagnosis, and management of these conditions in Africa. This comprehensive review provides an overview of the current literature on FXS and FXPAC in Africa, epidemiology, clinical features and challenges faced, such as discrimination against affected persons, limited awareness and research, poor access to resources and genetic services and treatment. It further provides an in-depth analysis of the existing worldwide data for the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. This review will improve understanding of FXS and FXPAC in Africa by incorporating existing knowledge, identifying research gaps, and potential topics for future research to enhance the well-being of individuals and families affected by FXS and FXPAC in the region.

Huanglongbing (HLB), or citrus greening, is a devastating disease impacting citrus trees worldwide, with severe effects particularly noted in Florida. Current strategies to combat HLB have focused on aggressive replanting despite the high susceptibility of young trees to infection. In this context, it is critical to explore agronomic practices that can enhance the health and resistance of young citrus trees to HLB. Here, we demonstrate that treatment with homobrassinolide (HBr), a type of brassinosteroid, on newly planted citrus trees can delay HLB infection and improve tree health amidst the high psyllid pressure conditions endemic to Florida. Our study reveals a significant reduction in HLB infection rates in HBr-treated trees compared to control trees, with only 25% of treated trees testing positive for HLB by six months, in contrast to 100% infection in untreated trees. This delay in infection may be attributed to HBr inducing an immune response and negatively impacting psyllid performance, as subsequently demonstrated in a greenhouse experiment. Our findings suggest that HBr applications could serve as a viable strategy to enhance the resilience of citrus production against HLB, underscoring the need for further investigation into their mechanisms of action and potential role in a comprehensive pest and disease management strategy.

The SBA-15 loaded with methylene blue was successfully prepared by sample adsorption of methylene blue in SBA-15 and is characterized by an XRD, SEM, FTIR, and BET. The photocatalytic activity for methyl orange (MO) degradation was investigated under visible light irradiation under LEDs. Experimental results demonstrate that the SBA-15-MB exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than SBA-15 under visible light irradiation. The degradation efficiency of MO (50 ppm) by SBA-15-MB could reach 80% within 180 min under 25W LED visible light. The photocatalytic activity of SBA-15 could be attributed to the excitation of methylene blue by visible light, the transfer of electrons from methylene blue to SBA-15, and the production of radicals at the surface of SBA-15.

This paper constituted an extension of two previous studies concerning the mathematical development of the grain boundary grooving in polycrystalline thins films in the cases of the evaporation/condensation and diffusion taken separately. The thermal grooving processes are deeply controlled by the various mass transfer mechanisms of evaporation–condensation, surface diffusion, lattice diffusion, and grain boundary diffusion. This study proposed a new original analytical solution to the mathematical problem governing the grain groove profile in the case of simultaneous effects of evaporation-condensation and diffusion in polycrystalline thin films submitted to thermal and mechanical stress, and fatigue effects; by resolving the corresponding fourth-order partial differential equation ∂y∂t=C∂2y∂x2-B∂4y∂x4 obtained from the approximation y'2≪1. The comparison of the new solution to that of diffusion alone proved an important effect of the coupling of evaporation and diffusion on the geometric characteristics of the groove profile. A second analytical solution based on the series development was also proposed. It was proved that change of the boundary conditions of the grain grooving profile largely affected the different geometric characteristics of the groove profile.

Background Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphism has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major public health concern worldwide, including in Pakistan. Cardiovascular problems linked with T2DM have a significant impact on people and society. The study's goal is to investigate the relationship between Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotypes, lipid profiles, and cardiovascular complications such as ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke. Methods: This study was carried out on 260 subjects, divided into control D1: Diabetics without cardiovascular issues. D2: Diabetics with heart disease. D3: Diabetics with stroke. D4: Diabetics with both heart disease and stroke. Anthropometric parameters (age, BMI) and risk factors (smoking, diabetes duration, hypertension) were assessed in all groups. Serum levels of TC, TG, LDL, HDL, VLDL, creatinine, BSF, and HbA1c were measured. Apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism was determined using PCR-RFLP. Results: Hypertension, BMI, and dyslipidemia, defined as elevated levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, and VLDL, as well as uncontrolled hyperglycemia (elevated fasting blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin) in T2DM, were linked to vascular complications such as IHD and stroke. Hypertension was prevalent in 75.4% of the population, with greater rates among the elderly. Stage 2 hypertension was more prevalent in all age groups. Apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism was discovered, with genotypes 3/3, 4/4, 2/3, and 3/4 being the most prevalent. Genotype 3/4 was more common in diabetics who had IHD/stroke or both problems, whereas genotype 2/3 was linked to DM and stroke. Conclusion: It is concluded that BMI, hypertension, hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis, and dyslipidemia are linked with cardiovascular complications of type 2 diabetes. Apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism is associated with cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients by affecting the lipid profile.

Abstract Introduction: Poor structural quality of health facilities for tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis and treatment contributes to unfavorable health outcomes among TB patients. Improving the quality of healthcare services helps to avert TB-related morbidity. Despite these facts, the level of structural quality of health facilitieSs to deliver TB services is not in line with what the national TB and leprosy program (NTLP) recommends. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess the structural quality of health facilities to deliver quality TB services to TB patients among public health facilities in the Sidama region.Objectives: To determine the quality of the structural domain of TB services at public health facilities in the Sidama region of southern Ethiopia.Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 2023 among randomly selected public health facilities in the Sidama region. We included 40 randomly selected public health facilities that delivered TB services in the study area. Data was collected by experienced data collectors using facility audits, clinical observation checklists, structured questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. An Open Kit Mobile (ODK) application was used to collect data and exported to SPSS version 26. All statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 26.Results: The overall mean quality score for the structural dimension was 50.25 among the 40 health facilities audited in the study area.Conclusion: The quality of TB services regarding structural dimensions was poor in the study area. Therefore, any strategies must give careful attention to increasing the comprehensive structural dimension of quality TB services.

Abstract. Introduction: BMD study gives partial information on bone health in patients with TSH suppression therapy due to Differentiated Thyroid Cancer (DTC). TBS, a new parameter of bone microarchitecture is propose for bone quality study. This study analyze their long-term use in patients with DTC. Methods: BMD was measured by DXA and TBS with iNsigth software in 145 postmenopausal DTC patients. Vertebral Fractures (VFs) with a semi-quantitative x-ray method. Results: BMD at the end study was not different from initial. TBS decreased from 1.35±0.1 to 1.27±0.1 (p=0.002). PTH, Osteocalcin, and BAP were increased, suggesting increased bone remodeling. There was an increase in osteoporosis and osteopenia (40.6% and 16.5% to 46.6% and 18.6%); 31% had partially degraded and 15.1% degraded TBS changed to 48,9% and 24,8% at the end study. VFs in 30 patients, was not different in age, BMI, calcium and alcohol ingestion, smoking, radioiodine, or thyroid parameters vs. without VFs. Odds ratio for VFs increased with osteopenia (OR 2.63). Combination of TBS plus TBS did not improve discrimination. Conclusions: TBS was lowered while BMD did not differ. Percentage of osteoporosis and osteopenia and of partially degraded and degraded TBS was higher at the end study. Predominant discordance rate was found in partially degraded microarchitecture, in which the proportion of osteopenia was higher than normal or osteoporotic patients. AUC of TBS plus BMD did not improve discrimination. TBS, radioactive iodine, and sedentary lifestyle were the main differential data for patients with DTC and VFs.

We have previously shown that the transmembrane protein ODZ1 promotes cytoskeletal remodelling of glioblastoma (GBM) cells and invasion of the surrounding parenchyma through activation of a RhoA-ROCK pathway. We also described that GBM cells can control the expression of ODZ1 through transcriptional mechanisms triggered by binding of IL-6 to its receptor and a hypoxic environment. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) plays a key role in the invasive capacity of GBM. However, the molecular mechanisms that enable tumor cells to acquire the morphological changes to migrate out from the tumor core have not been fully characterized. Here we show that EGF is able to induce the expression of ODZ1 in primary GBM cells. We analysed the levels of EGF receptor (EGFR) in 20 GBM primary cell lines and found expression in 19 of them by flow cytometry. We selected two cell lines that do or do not express EGFR and found that EGFR-expressing cells responded to EGF ligand by increasing ODZ1 at the mRNA and protein level. Moreover, blockade of EGF-EGFR binding by Cetuximab, inhibition of the p38 MAPK pathway or siRNA-mediated knockdown of MAPK11 (p38 MAPK) reduced the induction of ODZ1 in response to EGF. Overall, we show that EGF may activate an EGFR-mediated signalling pathway through p38 MAPK, to upregulate the invasion factor ODZ1, which may initiate morphological changes for tumor cells to invade the surrounding parenchyma. These data identify a new candidate of the EGF-EGFR pathway for novel therapeutic approaches.

Access to urban green and blue spaces (UGBS) has been associated with positive effects on health and wellbeing; however, the past decades have seen a decline in quality and user satisfaction with UGBS. This reflects the mounting challenges that many UK cities face in providing appropriate public facilities alongside issues such as health inequalities, an ageing population, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. At present, little is known about the preferences of different population subgroups and, specifically, the UGBS they visit and the spaces they avoid. Using a public participatory geographic information system (PPGIS), the overall aim of the research presented here was to investigate the preferences of different population subgroups in urban areas, and the UGBS they visit, using Edinburgh, Scotland as a case study. We created a baseline visitor demographic profile for UGBS use, and highlighted how visitors perceive, physically access, use, and engage with UGBS. The results revealed considerable variation in UGBS preference: one person’s favourite UGBS may be one that someone else dislikes and avoids. It is clear that adapting UGBS to suit local communities should not be a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. The conflicting views and preferences of different groups of respondents point to the importance of developing policies and park management plans that can accommodate a variety of uses and experiential qualities within individual parks. Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is the main genetic cause of iron overload and is regarded as metal-related human toxicosis. HH may result from HFE and non-HFE gene mutations causing hepcidin deficiency or hepcidin resistance. The disorder has a high biochemical penetrance, but a low clinical prevalence. Unfortunately, the majority of patients with HH remain undiagnosed at their disease-curable stage. The main aim of HH therapy is to prevent iron overload in the early-phase disease and elimination of excess iron from the body by phlebotomy in its late stage. Raising global awareness of HH among health professionals, their training to pay attention to early HH signs and symptoms, and strict patient monitoring are critical management strategies for preventing treatment delays, upgrading its efficacy, and improving patient prognosis.

: Julia Creek dunnarts are an endangered species of carnivorous marsupials and the focus of multiple conservation strategies involving significant resources such as captive breeding programs. Despite the relevance for conservation, no study to date has focused on evaluating geriatric diseases in dunnarts. This study describes the pathology findings in a group of one wild and 35 captive-born, mostly geriatric Julia Creek dunnarts that failed to produce offspring over multiple breeding periods. A total of 20 females and 16 males were submitted for a postmortem examination, with ages ranging from 9-42 and 12-42 months for females and males, respectively. Of these, 10 had unremarkable findings. The most common condition in females was cystic glandular hyperplasia (n=8), typical of hormonal dysregulation profiles in senescence, particularly hyperestrogenism. Rarely, cutaneous disease represented by unidentified dermal round cell infiltrates was observed in females (n=2). Primary reproductive hormonal dysregulation was also suspected in males diagnosed with testicular degeneration, aspermatogenesis and/or atrophy (n=3). Cutaneous round cell infiltrates, possibly compatible with epitheliotropic lymphomas were seen in males (n=3), and 2/3 affected males also had concurrent testicular degeneration or atrophy, indicating male sex could be a predictor for lymphoid neoplasia in aged dunnarts especially in individuals with concurrent testosterone-luteinizing hormone dysregulation as it occurs in gonadectomized animals. The role of an underlying viral etiology is also explored. This study is the first to describe major spontaneous diseases in endangered aged Julia Creek dunnarts, providing an important understanding of senescence and geriatric diseases within a conservation context.

While some research supports utilizing plain radiography for measuring biomechanical alignment of the spine for prognosis and treatment, there are contrasting viewpoints regarding both the value and utilization of these procedures in conservative care. Evaluation of both conservative and non-conservative approaches to spinal care revealed vast differences in radiographic utilization and interpretation between orthopedic surgeons, primary care physicians, chiropractic physicians, and physical therapists, which may account for the different viewpoints and rationale in the literature. A research summary is provided regarding the various methods of spinal analysis utilized by these professions to help determine if there is any unique diagnostic or prognostic value associated with radiographic utilization that could assist in advancing conservative spinal assessment and treatment. Understanding any unique value provided through biomechanical assessment utilizing plain radiography of the spine established in the literature may help chiropractic physicians determine the appropriate use of radiographic procedures in clinical practice and how to coordinate efforts with other conservative and non-conservative professions to improve spinal healthcare.

Optical artificial neural networks (ONNs) — analog computing hardware tailored for machine learning [1,2] — have significant potential for ultra-high computing speed and energy efficiency [3]. We propose a new approach to architectures for ONNs based on integrated Kerr micro-comb sources [4] that is programmable, highly scalable and capable of reaching ultra-high speeds. We experimentally demonstrate the building block of the ONN — a single neuron perceptron — by mapping synapses onto 49 wavelengths of a micro-comb to achieve a high single-unit throughput of 11.9 Giga-FLOPS at 8 bits per FLOP, corresponding to 95.2 Gbps. We test the perceptron on simple standard benchmark datasets — handwritten-digit recognition and cancer-cell detection — achieving over 90% and 85% accuracy, respectively. This performance is a direct result of the record small wavelength spacing (49GHz) for a coherent integrated microcomb source, which results in an unprecedented number of wavelengths for neuromorphic optics. Finally, we propose an approach to scaling the perceptron to a deep learning network using the same single micro-comb device and standard off-the-shelf telecommunications technology, for high-throughput operation involving full matrix multiplication for applications such as real-time massive data processing for unmanned vehicle and aircraft tracking.

Many clinical research datasets have a large percentage of missing values that directly impacts their usefulness in yielding high accuracy classifiers when used for training in supervised machine learning. While missing value imputation methods have been shown to work well with smaller percentages of missing values, their ability to impute sparse clinical research data can be problem specific. We previously attempted to learn quantitative guidelines for ordering cardiac magnetic resonance imaging during the evaluation for pediatric cardiomyopathy, but missing data significantly reduced our usable sample size. In this work, we sought to determine if increasing the usable sample size through imputation would allow us to learn better guidelines. We first review several machine learning methods for estimating missing data. Then, we apply four popular methods (mean imputation, decision tree, k-nearest neighbors, and self-organizing maps) to a clinical research dataset of pediatric patients undergoing evaluation for cardiomyopathy. Using Bayesian Rule Learning (BRL) to learn ruleset models, we compared the performance of imputation-augmented models versus unaugmented models. We found that all four imputation-augmented models performed similarly to unaugmented models. While imputation did not improve performance, it did provide evidence for the robustness of our learned models.

The paper presents the design and the implementation of different advanced control strategies that are applied to a nonlinear model of a thermal unit. A data–driven grey–box identification approach provided the physically meaningful nonlinear continuous–time model, which represents the benchmark exploited in this work. The control problem of this thermal unit is important since it constitutes the key element of passive air conditioning systems. The advanced control schemes analysed in this paper are used to regulate the outflow air temperature of the thermal unit by exploiting the inflow air speed, whilst the inflow air temperature is considered as an external disturbance. The reliability and robustness issues of the suggested control methodologies are verified with a Monte–Carlo analysis for simulating modelling uncertainty, disturbance and measurement errors. The achieved results serve to demonstrate the effectiveness and the viable application the suggested control solutions to air conditioning systems. The benchmark model represents one of the key issues of this study, which is exploited for benchmarking different model–based and data–driven advanced control methodologies through extensive simulations. Moreover, this work highlights the main features of the proposed control schemes, while providing practitioners and heating, ventilating and air conditioning engineers with tools to design robust control strategies for air conditioning systems.

Cardiovascular surgeries, though lifesaving, can lead to complications requiring further interventions, including amputations. This study uses Sankey diagrams, Sunburst plots, and Icicle plots to analyze treatment pathways in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), focusing on those that lead to amputation versus those that do not. We found that non-amputation outcomes commonly involve anti-platelet and lipid-lowering medications, while amputation pathways, although less frequent, often share similar initial treatments but diverge later, suggesting areas for early intervention. These visualizations highlight patterns in patient care and emphasize the importance of tailored treatment strategies to reduce amputations, offering insights to predict likely outcomes based on treatment sequences.

Background/Objectives: Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) consisting of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and oncology pathways serve as the foundation of high-quality cancer care. However, the resources needed to develop and maintain these systems have not been characterized for oncology enterprises. Methods: Missing CPOEs for oncology treatments were identified by comparing current CPOEs to those in the Elsevier ClinicalPath treatment pathways. New FDA oncology drug approvals were used to estimate ongoing CPOE build needs. The impacts of missing orders on clinicians and pharmacists were surveyed. Benchmarking from two other large oncology enterprises supported new resource needs to build and maintain CPOE in our EPIC Beacon system. A program to manage oncology pathways and CPOE for an enterprise using EPIC was developed and implemented. Results: Resources and impacts of CDSS for oncology enterprises are described. Program management is described. Conclusions: Updating and maintaining CDSS for an oncology enterprise requires program management and resources for which a framework has not been previously reported. We present this work as a framework for others to understand the components and resources for budgeting and management of CDSS. We report on the work of the City of Hope enterprise using the EPIC electronic health record.

Testosterone holds significant medical and economic importance, with the global market for testosterone replacement therapies valued at approximately $1.9 billion in 2023. This hormone is essential for the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics as well as bone and muscle health. It plays a key role in conditions such as hypogonadism, muscle disorders, and andropause. However, the industrial production of testosterone often involves complex chemical processes that result in low yields, high costs, and environmental damage. Microbial biotransformation of steroids presents an eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical synthesis. A knockout strain of Aspergillus nidulans deficient in steroid 11-α-hydroxylase activity was developed, rendering it incapable of hydroxylating androstenedione, progesterone, and testosterone. In this strain, two newly identified CYP450 enzymes—CYP68L1 from A. nidulans and CYP68L8 from Aspergillus ochraceus—were expressed to confirm their roles as steroid 11-α-hydroxylases. These enzymes successfully hydroxylated steroids such as androstenedione, progesterone, and testosterone. The availability of these 11-α-hydroxylases represents significant progress toward achieving efficient single-step steroid fermentation. Furthermore, the A. nidulans knockout strain is proposed as an effective model for studying the conversion of androstenedione to testosterone owing to its inability to hydroxylate the testosterone produced during bioconversion.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a sphingolipid metabolic product produced via the phosphorylation of sphingosine by sphingosine kinases (SPHKs), serving as a powerful modulator of various cellular processes through its interaction with S1P receptors (S1PRs). Currently, the incompletely understood of mechanism in pancreatic diseases including pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, largely limits therapeutic therapy options for these disorders. Recent evidence indicates that S1P significantly contributes to pancreatic diseases by modulating inflammation, promoting pyroptosis in pancreatic acinar cells, regulating the activation of pancreatic stellate cells, and affecting organelle functions in pancreatic cancer cells. Nevertheless, no review has encapsulated these advancements. Thus, this review compiles information about the involvement of S1P signaling in exocrine pancreatic disorders, including acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer, as well as prospective treatment strategies to target S1P signaling for these conditions. The insights presented here possess the potential to offer valuable guidance for the implementation of therapies targeting S1P signaling in various pancreatic diseases.

A review of different modelling techniques, specifically in the framework of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs, including nanoparticles as graphene and carbon nanotubes - CNTs) and the composites and devices that can be derived from them, is presented. The article highlights the multiscale nature of these types of materials and systems, which require different approaches depending on the type, size, internal structure/configuration of the material and properties of interest. Far from attempting to cover the entire spectrum of models, this review examines a wide range of analysis and simulation techniques, highlighting their potential use, some of their weaknesses and strengths, and presenting the latest developments and some application examples. Specifically, this paper shows how electronic, atomistic, mesoscopic, continuum and system models can be used to study and design CNMs, to predict different properties and responses of materials, or even to study devices such as sensors. This review has been performed within the framework of COST Action EsSENce (High-performance Carbon-based composites with Smart properties for Advanced Sensing Applications – CA19118).

Parental willingness is a prerequisite for childhood immunization. This study evaluated whether parental vaccination readiness and willingness, measured using the modified Japanese 7C Vaccination Readiness Scale, predicted vaccination behavior. In December 2021, 2 months before the approval of COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5–11 years in Japan, we asked 1,190 parents of children in this age groups about their intention regarding vaccinating their children against COVID-19 using an online modified 7C Vaccination Readiness Scale, consisting of seven components, namely, Confidence, Complacency, Constraints, Calculation, Collective responsibility, Compliance, and Conspiracy. The modified 7C components were analyzed for model fit and association with parental intention using structural equation modeling. The model fit of the modified 7C scale was good (goodness-of-fit index: 0.98), and the factor loadings and model fit for parental readiness were high (standardized factor loadings: 0.84). In January 2024, we asked the same parents about their children's COVID-19 vaccination status (valid responses: 536). The components of the modified 7C scale were compared with actual vaccination behavior. Parents with a low readiness to vaccinate their children against COVID-19 had a high actual non-vaccination rate. The use of the modified 7C scale may assist in the development of childhood vaccination interventions.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the primary cause of mortality globally with a multifactorial etiology that involves epigenetics. Chromobox 3 (CBX3), the major isoform of heterochromatin protein 1, is involved in intricate epigenetic mechanisms affecting congestive heart failure. In patients with CVD affected by lung cancer risk, CBX3 exerts a sophisticated mechanism of action, suppressing the proliferation, migration, and formation of neointima in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) by affecting the Notch3 pathway, indicating a potential protective function against vascular remodeling and atherosclerosis. However, the broader impact of CBX3 on endothelial function, as well as its effects on monocyte/macrophage and lymphocyte infiltration and function within the arterial wall, remain poorly understood. Since very little is known so far, more definite research would be needed to reveal the fine mechanisms of CBX3 action, along with its relationship in molecular processes and prospects as a biomarker. Specifically, CBX3 biological features could be examined to gain a greater insight into CVD risks. This review outlines the role of CBX3 in mechanisms associated with CVD and feasibility for optimizing pre-existing therapy and developing new therapeutic strategies based on personalized medi-cine.

Background: Leprosy control remains challenging in Brazil and has been aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Objective: To analyze the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the epide-miological scenario of leprosy through the detection rate of new cases, risk of illness and hidden prevalence according to high-risk micro-region in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: Ecological study conducted in the health micro-regions, using data on new leprosy cases diagnosed between 2015 and 2023. The annual detection rate of new cases, the Risk of Illness Index and the Hidden Preva-lence were evaluated. The time trend was evaluated by calculating the Annual Percentage Change (APC) of the detection rate, based on segmented linear regression. Results: A reduction in the detection of new cases was identified in most of the micro-regions evaluated. Minas Gerais and some micro-regions showed a positive increase in the variation of the overall detection rate in 2021. The reduction in hidden prevalence in certain micro-regions is linked to the reduction in diagnoses, especially those cases with installed physical disability. Despite the reduction in the risk of becoming ill with leprosy in some micro-regions, Minas Gerais showed an increase in risk. Conclusions: The pandemic has had a considerable and heterogeneous impact on the detection of new cases, as well as on the risk of becoming ill and the hidden prevalence, with repercussions for the control of the endemic in populations. There is a need to implement public health policies that prioritize the early identification of cases and ensure that vulnerable populations are monitored.

Cooperative and self-enforceable water allocation is a key instrument to manage geopolitical conflict induced by water scarcity, which necessitates concerning the cooperative willingness of the agents and considering their heterogeneity in geography, climate, hydrology, environment and social economy. Based on a multi-indicator system that contains asymmetric information on water volume contribution, current water consumption, water economic efficiency and efforts for eco-environmental protection, this study proposed a water allocation framework by combining the asymmetric power index approach with bankruptcy theory for solving the transboundary water allocation problem under scarcity. The proposed method was applied to the Yellow River Basin in northern China, which is mainly shared by nine provincial districts and frequently suffers from severe water shortage, and its results were compared with six alternative methods. The results highlight the necessity of quantifying agent’s willingness to cooperate under the background of asymmetric negotiation power when making decisions on transboundary water allocations. The proposed method allows to perform transboundary water allocations through simultaneous consideration of the agent’s cooperation willingness, asymmetric negotiation power as well as disagreement allocation points, which ensure the stability, fairness and self-enforceability of allocation results. Therefore, it can offer practical and valuable decision-making insights for transboundary water management under water scarcity.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) otherwise known as Hughes syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease typically linked with characteristic features like thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity with the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). Although anticoagulation is the current flagship treatment for APS, there are reports indicating a considerable failure following this regimen in a significant number of obstetric APS and thrombotic APS cases. Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) bind anionic phospholipids or protein-phospholipid complexes within the cell membrane. Here, we gave a general overview of the biology of APS and the human gut microbiome, our current understanding of the gut bacteria-immune axis in autoimmunity focus on the potential link to APS, highlighting the implicated microorganisms in this context, and proposing recommendations on future therapeutic development.

Developing recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains capable of transporting and fermenting cellobiose directly is a promising strategy for second-generation ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass. In this study we cloned and expressed in the CEN.PK2-1C strain an intracellular βglucosidase (SpBGL7) from Spathaspora passalidarum, and co-expressed the cellobiose transporter SiHXT2.4 from Scheffersomyces illinoinensis, and two putative transporters from Candida tropicalis (CtCBT1) and Meyerozyma guilliermondii (MgCBT2). While all three transporters allowed cell growth on cellobiose, only the MgCBT2 permease allowed cellobiose fermentation, although cellobiose consumption was stuck (incomplete). The analysis of the βglucosidase and transport activities revealed that the cells stopped to consume cellobiose due to a drop in the transport activity. Since ubiquitinylation of lysine residues at the N- or C-terminal domains of the permease are involved in the endocytosis and degradation of sugar transporters, we constructed truncated versions of the permease lacking lysine residues at the C-terminal domain (MgCBT2ΔC), and at both the C- and N-terminal domain (MgCBT2ΔNΔC), and co-expressed these permeases with the SpBGL7 βglucosidase in an industrial strain. While the strain harboring the MgCBT2ΔC transporter continued to produce stuck cellobiose fermentations as the wild-type MgCBT2 permease, the strain with the MgCBT2ΔNΔC permease was able to consume and ferment all the cellobiose present in the medium. Thus, our results highlight the importance of expressing cellobiose transporters lacking lysine at the N- and C-terminal domains for efficient cellobiose fermentation by recombinant S. cerevisiae.

The Chinese community is one of the main minorities in Colombia, and although China has made advances in public health, it faces a growing burden of cardiovascular diseases. This study focuses on evaluating cardiovascular risk factors in Chinese immigrants in Barranquilla, Colombia, due to the lack of specific data on this population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 67 Chinese immigrants over 18 years of age residing in Barranquilla. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical data were collected through structured interviews and medical record reviews. Cardiovascular risk was estimated using the 10-year ASCVD (Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease) formula from the ACC/AHA. Statistical tests were employed to assess significant differences and relationships between variables. Results: The sample included 54% women with an average age of 53 years. 75% were over 45 years old, with the main occupations being trade (43%) and homemaking (40%). 54% had social security. Significant differences were observed in systolic blood pressure and the prevalence of smoking and alcoholism between men and women. Women had higher levels of HDL and lower creatinine, while men had higher levels of hemoglobin and creatinine. Cardiovascular risk was high in 9% of cases, moderate in 39%, and low in 52%. Conclusions: Chinese immigrants in Barranquilla present a significant prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors influenced by their socioeconomic situation and barriers to accessing healthcare. Interventions should focus on improving access to healthcare services and promoting healthy lifestyles for this vulnerable community.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic and mixotrophic bacterium, designated as strain LZ166T, was isolated from the bathyplagic seawater in the western Pacific Ocean. Cells were short rod-shaped, oxidase- and catalase- positive, and motile by means of lateral flagella. Growth of strain LZ166T was observed at 10-45 ℃ (optimum, 34-37 ℃), at pH 5-10 (optimum, 6-8) and in the presence of 0-5% NaCl (optimum, 1-3%). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that strain LZ166T shared the highest similarity (98.58%) with Aquibium oceanicum B7T, and formed a distinct branch within the Aquibium genus. Genomic characterization, including average nucleotide identity (ANI, 90.73-76.79%), average amino identity (AAI, 88.50-79.03%) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH, 36.1-22.2%) values between LZ166T and other species within the Aquibium genus, further substantiated its novelty. The genome of strain LZ166T was 6,119,659 bp in size with a 64.7 mol% DNA G+C content. The predominant fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c). The major polar lipids identified were Diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), glycolipid (GL) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG), with ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as the predominant respiratory quinone. Genomic annotation indicated the presence of genes for a diverse metabolic profile, including pathways for carbon fixation via the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle and inorganic sulfur oxidation. Based on polyphasic taxonomic results, strain LZ166T represented a novel species of the genus Aquibium, for which the name Aquibium pacificus sp. nov., is proposed, with the type strain LZ166T (= MCCC M28807T = KACC 23148T = KCTC 82889T).

Gas-water relative permeability curve is the foundation of gas reservoir dynamic analysis and numerical simulation. It is generally obtained through gas displacing water experiment. Referring to the existing national standards, gas-water relative permeability test is carried out for low-permeability and tight sandstone. The flow is discontinuous and the curve smoothness is poor, which affects the application of gas-water relative permeability curve. Based on the comparative analysis of a large number of mercury injection and NMR experimental results of low-permeability and tight sandstone, a method to characterize the throat radius distribution of low-permeability tight sandstone based on NMR T2 spectrum is explored. Combined with high-speed centrifugal experiment, the calculation formulas of core water saturation, phase relative permeability of gas-water under different centrifugal force are established. A new method of "nuclear magnetic resonance + high-speed centrifugation" for gas-water relative permeability curve test of low-permeability and tight sandstone is formed, and the test is carried out on Sulige low-permeability tight sandstone core. The results show that: (1) The shape of cumulative distribution curve of throat radius by mercury injection method is basically consistent with that of T2 relaxation time by NMR, and there is a good corresponding relationship between them. (2) The centrifugation process is similar to the gas displacing water process. With the decrease of water saturation, water centrifugation in rock core becomes more and more difficult until it become irreducible. (3) The test process of the new method is unified and standard and up to 6 cores can be tested at the same time. The calculation results of water saturation and relative permeability curve are reliable and the integral curve is smooth, which greatly improves the test efficiency of gas-water relative permeability curve in low-permeability and tight sandstone. The new method can be widely used to study the gas-water two-phase seepage law in low-permeability and tight sandstone gas reservoir.

The Digital electronics collaborative enhanced learning (DECEL) project has recently developed an international collaborative education course. Its main objective is to enhance the digital electronics skills of international students by working on a complex, multidisciplinary applied problem using a mixed digital architecture. We have developed a logic level synthesis and dedicated software layers on the Red Pitaya FPGA platform. The diversity of digital concepts to be implemented, from hardware description language (HDL) to high-level languages such as Python or Matlab, forced the students to work together and rapidly improve their skills. Their motivation was fueled by the curiosity of controlling an ultrasound probe to obtain ultrasound signatures. This particular physics, little known to the students, was an additional source of curiosity. The goal of forming an image in a liquid medium was an additional motivating factor for them. The students reported that they learned a lot from the experiment. Thus, the technical parts and pedagogical results are documented in this work for reproducibility.

Environment, forage quality, management practices, pathogens and pesticides influence honeybee responses to stressors. This study proposes an innovative approach to assess colony health and performance using molecular diagnostic tools, by correlating hemolymph proteins with common measures of colony strength, prevalent honeybee pathogens (Varroa destructor and Nosema spp.) and essential elements (iron, zinc and copper). Colonies were selected from four apiaries in the province of Bologna (Italy), located in different environmental and foraging conditions. Haemolymph samples were taken from June to October 2019. The Varroa infestation of the colonies was estimated by assessing the natural fall of the mites, while the bees were tested for Nosema spp. spores using microscopic method. Proteins were separated using SDS-PAGE and colony performance was assessed by determining adult bees, total brood, and honey and pollen reserves. The biomarkers measured proved to be useful for monitoring changes in performance and trophic conditions during summer and early autumn. Significant correlations were found between haemolymph proteins and colony performance measures. A positive correlation between pollen reserves and vitellogenin and hexamerin 70a highlights the importance of these proteins for successful overwintering. In October, Varroa infestation was negatively correlated with total proteins, vitellogenin, apolipophorin II, transferrin, and hexamerin 70a, with negative implications for overwintering; furthermore, Varroa infestation was also negatively correlated with iron content, potentially affecting iron homeostasis.

The pyrolysis process has emerged as an attractive option for waste treatment. In this technology, inorganic compounds play catalytic effects in the pyrolytic reaction of organic materials, increa-sing the char's yield, porosity, and physicochemical properties. The present research investigates and compares the slow pyrolysis of spent coffee grounds (SCG) using potassium hydroxide (KOH) (weight ratio of 1:1) and landfill leachate membrane concentrate (LLMC) residue (weight ratio of 1:1) as pyrolitic additives. We hypothesized that the high content of alkali and alkaline earth metals in LLMC could enhance the yield or improve the quality of the carbon-based material produced in pyrolysis. This strategy could be a sustainable alternative for valorizing SCG and landfill wastes, replacing catalyzing agents such as steam, CO2, and chemical additives used on an industrial scale. The char yields in slow pyrolysis ranged from 18 to 24%. The SCG had a low specific surface area (4.5 m2 g-1), contrasting with the notable surface areas observed in both ac-tivated chars. In particular, the KOH-activated char displayed a higher surface area than the LLMC-activated char (1960 vs. 1130 m2 g-1). On the other hand, the combustion enthalpy of the LLMC-activated material was estimated at 22 MJ kg-1. This value was 22% higher than the energy enthalpy of SCG and KOH-activated char used for comparison. Our findings confirm that pyrolysis of SCG with KOH produces a microporous material with a high specific surface area. In contrast, the resulting LLMC-activated char demonstrates a higher calorific value. Our findings could contribute to establishing potential industrial applications for SCG and LLMC residues to produce energy and high-value materials.

SARS-CoV-2 can induce vascular dysfunction and thrombotic events in patients with severe COVID-19; however, the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind these effects remain largely unknown. In this study, we used a combination of experimental and in silico approaches to explore the mechanisms behind the vascular and thrombotic events in COVID-19. Single-cell RNA-sequencing data from patients with COVID-19 and healthy subjects were obtained from the publicly available Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository. In addition, HUVECs were treated with inactivated protein C before exposure to SARS-CoV-2 infection or a severe COVID-19 serum. An RT-qPCR array containing 84 related genes was used, and the candidate genes obtained were evaluated. Activated protein C levels were measured using an ELISA kit. We identified at the single-cell level the expression of several pro-inflammatory and pro-coagulation genes in endothelial cells from the patients with COVID-19. Furthermore, we demonstrated that exposure to SARS-CoV-2 promoted transcriptional changes in HUVECs that were partly reversed by the activated protein C pretreatment. We also observed that the serum of severe COVID-19 had a significant amount of activated protein C that could protect endothelial cells from serum-induced activation. In conclusion, activated protein C protects endothelial cells from pro-inflammatory and pro-coagulant effects during exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Catalytic studies for hydrogen production via steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) are essential for process optimization. Likewise, selecting the ideal support for the active phase can be critical to achieve high conversion rates during the catalytic steam reforming. In this work, copper-based catalysts were synthesized using two different supports, NaY zeolite and Nb2O5/Al2O3 mixed oxides. The materials were prepared using wet impregnation and characterized for their physicochemical properties using different analytical techniques. Differences in catalyst morphologies were readily attributed to the characteristics of the support. The Cu/NaY catalyst showed better textural properties than Cu/Nb2O5/Al2O3, resulting in a homogeneous metal dispersion over the support surface. Both catalytic systems were active in SRE, but Cu/NaY resulted in higher ethanol conversions compared to Cu/Nb2O5/Al2O3. Hence, the performance of copper-based catalysts was influenced significantly by the textural properties of the support.

Worldwide, different strategies are elaborated in order to ensure optimum conditions for the development and growth of the economic competitiveness, but also for increasing the quality of life and environment protection. All these strategies are closely linked with the development and modernization of the systems for producing energy from clean and renewable sources. In this context, the present paper presents the results of the researches regarding the evaluation of the sustainability of the briquettes production, using the biomass resulted from vine winter pruning as raw material. An analysis of the scientific references indicates that nearly 8 Mt of biomass result from over 7.4 million hectares of vine plantations existent worldwide, biomass that could be valorized through densification in order to produce solid biofuels with a lower calorific value of more than 17 MJ·kg-1. When designing the scientific endeavor, the following aspects were considered: defining the aim and objectives of the research; design of the research algorithm; collection, preparation and conditioning of the biomass; chemical analysis of the briquettes; evaluation of the technological characteristics of the briquettes; evaluation of the energy consumption and energy efficiency for producing the briquettes, taking into account two drying methods (natural and artificial drying). In the meantime, some specific laboratory equipment was design and built for the artificial drying of biomass, evaluation of the mechanical durability, measurement of the energy consumption etc. The analysis of the experimental data has led to the conclusion that the agricultural waste from vine pruning can constitute an important and sustainable source of energy in the form of bri-quettes, which fulfill most of the requirements imposed by the international standards.

As previous study in many countries shown that stroke patient onsets are not distributed randomly, but associate with meteorological factors. However, the relationship between stroke occurence and meteorological factors remain unknown in mountain area in Guizhou China. This paper firstly introduces multi-source fusion data which is integrated by the mountain meteorological factor, geographic mapping elevation information data and stroke population monitoring of Guizhou province. Mainly elaborates from a few aspects, which concludes data collection, data sorting, data extraction, data cleaning and data production in detail. A completed and detailed meteorological stroke data set was successfully established and multi-source data fusion was realized by the use of Gbase and unified data service interface of Guizhou meteorological big data cloud platform. And we report the impact of meteorological variables in Guizhou mountain area climate on stroke. In this study, we performed a statistical fusion data between January 2017 and December 2020 about stroke incidence rate and meteorological factors respectively, for instance, concerning the mean (Mean), maximum (Max), minimum (Min), median (Median), standard deviation (Std) . We calculated stroke rates (date stroke occurence)/(year stroke occurence) and we investigated the distribution of days included in the label. Results: the distribution of the incidence rate basically conforms to the normal distribution with the label Max 0.007399, label Min 0.000204, label Mean 0.002738, label Median 0.002643, label Std 0.00076. We observed a positive significant correlation of stroke incidence rate directly proportional to the daily temperature difference (between 0 and 20 degrees Celsius), as the value of this factor exhibits variation larger, the incidence rate is gradually increasing. And we investigated from the Pearson correlation coefficients that stroke incidence increasing when meteorological factors at low humidity (less than 40% (RH 80%), temperature higher than 31℃); the 24-hour daily temperature difference varies between 6 and 10℃ (6

The rural population in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka is largely affected by Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown etiology (CKDu). According to the multidisciplinary research carried out so far, quality of groundwater was considered one of the possible causative factors for CKDu. Therefore, the assessment of water quality variations and evolution mechanism of water quality parameters of drinking water sources is important for identifying any relationships between CKDu and the drinking water quality. The current study aimed to perform a detailed hydrogeochemical investigation using isotopic and chemical methods on selected groundwater sources in the CKDu-endemic, non-endemic and control areas. TDS, hardness, Mg2+, Na+ and F- are the main parameters that cause water quality deterioration but, their derived mechanism in these three regions are completely different. The excess concentrations of F- and Mg2+ in the CKDu endemic area, low F- and high Mg2+in the CKDu non-endemic sedimentary formation, and either combinations of low F- and low Mg2+, high F- and low Mg2+ or low F- with high Mg2+ in the control area are the distinct features. The primary processes that regulate the evolution of groundwater types in CKDu endemic and control area is the weathering of silicates. Similarly, in the CKDu endemic area, carbonate dissolution and reverse ion exchange are prominent. Cation exchange and evaporite dissolution are more pronounced in the control area. Shallow groundwaters are evapo-concentrated hence it further deteriorates quality when compared to the deep groundwater with non-mixed, non-evaporated, and higher elevation recharge effect (from 100 m altitude) in the CKDu endemic area. Dilution decreases the ion content in the CKDu endemic area while evaporite dissolution further increase it in the control area after the rainy season. Evaporation, and seawater mixing affected the quality of groundwater in the non-endemic sedimentary formation. A statistically significant difference of F- ionic ratio with Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ in the endemic and control areas. Intense rock weathering combined with the desorption added excess F- to the groundwater in the CKDu endemic area while the cation exchange and fluorite dissolution is contributing factor in CKDu control area. All the groundwater samples analyzed have exceeded the moderate hardness threshold. However, prominent Mg hardness proportion together with excess F- in the CKDu endemic area may produce nephrotoxic MgF2 complexes that may trigger renal damage. In contrast, produced NaF complexes in the CKDu control area leads to reduction of F- toxicity in the human body. Therefore, increased levels of magnesium, fluoride and TDS in the shallow groundwater, along with geochemical, hydrogeological and climatic factors, may contribute to the CKDu in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka.

BackgroundThe present review summarizes the state-of-the-art of in silico methods and techniques that are the most useful in drug discovery, their relationship with data science, as well as the successful application of data science, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. A meta-analysis of the various technologies available is furthermore proposed as a guideline for the non-expert, reader relative to the several subject areas is also discussed in this article. The scope of this meta-analysis is to rank the enlisted technologies by their field of applications and to depict the latter according to knowledge accessibility, from students to experts.Method The search strategy utilized for this review first produced a general collection of 900 papers without duplications, which were subsequently streamlined and divided into two independent collections: the top 300 most-cited papers of all time (since 2000) and the papers with the highest interest for a systematic review analysis (high-impact exciting papers). Results In Part 1, we discuss the most cited and quality 97 articles in these top 300 papers most relevant to the field of in silico drug discovery. The different disciplines are listed according to their industrial and economic incurred to society, independently from the “metric” results of how many new drug approvals (NDAs) each discipline has generated to date.ConclusionBig data, the ensemble of known items stored in publicly available databases, has improved our understanding of the many fates of a potential drug candidate during its development and even after its commercialization. Moreover, the combination of new screening techniques and “omics” with old drugs has led to a new paradigm in which the unknown knowledge of any biological molecule and its cellular structure, now plays an important role as a target for a series of yet-to-be-developed drugs: the chemical space. Furthermore, leveraging big data, data science, ML, and AI can revolutionize drug discovery by swiftly analyzing massive datasets, predicting efficacy and safety profiles, streamlining development, cutting costs, and boosting success rates for new drugs. AI also speeds up the search for promising drug candidates, advancing innovative therapies.

In the last decade a group of Ca2+ channels called Piezo were discovered, demonstrating a decisive role in the cellular response to mechanical stimuli and being essential in the biological behaviour of cells regarding the extracellular compartment. Several investigations have suggested a potential role in carcinogenesis with a tumor supressor role in some cases, but increased expression in several high grade neoplasms. Regarding Piezo2 expression in mammary gland neoplasms, early results suggested a protective role of Piezo2, but posterior works resulted in a relationship between Piezo2 expression and the highly-aggressive triple negative phenotype of breast carcinoma. A cohort of 125 patients with clinical follow up was chosen to study Piezo2 expression and clarify its clinical implications, using the same immunohistochemical valuation performed for other breast carcinoma parameters. Fisher exact was chosen to identify potential relationships between the different variables. A significant association was found with the Ki67 proliferation index, but not with mitoses. The tendency of most proliferative tumors was to have a diminished score for Piezo2. A similar association was found between Piezo2 expression and perineurial invasion.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths. Classically, liver transplantation (LT) can be curable for HCC tumors within the Milan criteria. Bridging strategies to reduce the dropouts from LT waiting lists or/and to downstage patients who are beyond Milan criteria are widely utilized. We conducted a literature-based review to evaluate the role of systemic therapies as a bridging treatment to liver transplantation (LT) in HCC patients. Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) can be used as a bridging systemic therapy to LT in patients with contraindication to locoregional liver-directed therapies. Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs) treatment can be utilized either as a monotherapy or as a combination therapy with Bevacizumab or TKIs prior to LT. Acute rejection post liver transplantation is a concern in the context of ICIs treatment. Thus, a safe ICI washout period before LT and cautious post-LT immunosuppression strategies are required to reduce post-LT rejections and to optimize clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, prospective clinical trials are needed to establish definitive conclusions about the utility of systemic therapy as a bridging modality prior to LT in HCC patients.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a serious public health threat that affects the most vulnerable population. Patients who are LTFU after TB diagnosis still represent one of the biggest challenges to TB control. Method: In this prospective observational study, we aimed to identify and analyse the risk factors associated with LTFU among TB patients who started first-line TB treatment in the Sanatorium Hospital in Luanda. Result: A total of 113 patients with TB were included between August 2018 and September 2019. Seventy-six (67.3%) patients were cured, 27 (23.9%) were LTFU, 5 (4.4%) died, 4 (3.5%) were transferred and 1 (0.9%) presented a treatment failure. After excluding those dead, transferred or who failed to treatment, we observed that severe TB at the time of diagnosis (OR 9.24, 95% CI 2.18-39.04) and food insecurity were significantly associated with LTFU (OR 5.96, 95% CI 1.66-21.41). Conclusion: The findings of our study are of enormous value to understand the reasons for the LTFU of patients with TB and can guide polices and facilitate designing measures to allow better adherence, and therefore, greater treatment success

Our study explores the genetic mechanisms underlying the spotted leaf phenotype in rice, focusing on the rpt5a mutant characterized by persistent reddish-brown leaf spots from seedling stage to maturity, leading to extensive leaf necrosis. Through map-based cloning, we localized the responsible locus to a 330Kb region on chromosome 2 and identified LOC_Os02g56000 (named OsRPT5A) as the causative gene. A point mutation in OsRPT5A, substituting valine for glutamic acid, was identified as the critical factor for the phenotype. Functional complementation and generation of knockout lines in the IR64 background confirmed the central role of OsRPT5A in controlling this trait. Our study also revealed that OsRPT5A is constitutively expressed across various tissues, with its subcellular localization unaffected by mutations. Notably, we observed an abnormal accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rpt5a mutants, suggesting a disruption in the ROS system. Complementation studies indicated OsRPT5A's involvement in ROS homeostasis and catalase activity regulation. Moreover, the rpt5a mutant exhibited enhanced resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), highlighting OsRPT5A's role in rice's pathogen resistance mechanisms. These findings elucidate the genetic basis of the spotted leaf phenotype and emphasize the intricate interplay between plant defense responses and developmental pathways.

Lipid droplet (LD) accumulation in hepatocytes is one of the major symptoms associated with fatty liver disease. Mitochondria play a key role in catabolizing fatty acids for energy production through β-oxidation. The interplay between mitochondria and LD assumes a crucial role in lipid metabolism, while it is obscure how mitochondrial morphology affects systemic lipid metabolism in the liver. We previously reported that cilnidipine, an already existing anti-hypertensive drug, has potency to prevent pathological mitochondrial fission by inhibiting protein-protein interaction between dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) and filamin, an actin-binding protein. Here, we found that cilnidipine and its new dihydropyridine (DHP) derivative, 1,4-DHP, which lacks Ca2+ channel blocking action of cilnidipine, prevent the palmitic ac-id-induced Drp1-filamin interaction, LD accumulation and cytotoxicity of human hepatic HepG2 cells. Cilnidipine and 1,4-DHP also suppressed the LD accumulation accompanied by reducing mitochondrial contact with LD in obese model and high fat diet-fed mouse livers. These results propose that targeting Drp1-filimin interaction becomes a new strategy for the prevention or treatment of fatty liver disease.

Background: Diet is a risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). There are few studies on women´s diet and glucose tolerance test (GTT) results. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between previous diet and the number of abnormal values on the diagnostic GTT in women with GDM. We hypothesized there would be an inverse relation between antioxidant micronutrient consumption and the number of abnormal GTT values. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 60 women diagnosed with GDM (2-hours, 75g-GTT). Shortly after diagnosis, participants answered a validated food frequency questionnaire to assess food consumption in the last 6 months. Mann-Whitney´s test was used to compare the dietary intake of participants with one (group 1) versus two-three (group 2) abnormal GTT values. Results: Participant characteristics were similar. There were no significant differences between groups in median intake of total calories, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Participants in group 1 had significantly higher intakes of fiber (11.9 vs. 11.0 g/day p= 0.049), vitamin D (40.6 vs. 40.4 mcg/day p= 0.049) and vitamin C (180.0 vs. 151.0 mg/day p= 0.008) than those in group 2. Conclusion: Results suggest a possible association between consumption of fiber and some antioxidant micronutrients and GDM severity at the time of diagnosis.

Graph databases (GDBs) are becoming increasingly popular across scientific disciplines, being highly suitable to store and connect complex heterogeneous data. In systems biology, they are used as a backend solution for biological data repositories, ontologies, networks, pathways, and knowledge graph (KG) databases. In this review, we analyse all publications using or mentioning graph databases retrieved from PubMed and PubMed Central full-text search, focusing on the top 16 available GDB technologies. Relevant publications are then categorised according to their domain and application. We detail different approaches and highlight advantages of outstanding resources, such as UniProtKB, Disease Ontology, and Reactome, which provide graph-based solutions. We discuss ongoing efforts of the systems biology community to standardise and harmonise KG creation and the maintenance of integrated resources. Outlining prospects, including the use of GDBs as a way of communication between biological data repositories, we conclude that efficient design, querying, and maintenance of GDBs will be key for knowledge generation in systems biology and other research fields with heterogeneous data.

Rectal cancer presents a significant burden globally, often requiring multimodal therapy for locally advanced cases. Long-course chemoradiotherapy (LCRT) and short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) followed by surgery have been conventional neoadjuvant approaches. Recent trials favor LCRT due to improved local control. However, tumor distant recurrence remains a concern, prompting exploration of Total Neoadjuvant Therapy (TNT) as a comprehensive treatment strat-egy. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) show promise, particularly in mismatch repair-deficient (dMMR) or microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) tumors, potentially revolutionizing neoadjuvant regimens. Non-operative management (NOM) represents a viable alternative post-neoadjuvant therapy for selected patients achieving clinical complete response (cCR). Additionally, monitoring minimal residual disease (MRD) using circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) emerges as a non-invasive method for treatment response assessment. This review synthesizes current evidence on TNT, ICIs, NOM and ctDNA, elucidating their implications for rectal cancer management and highlighting avenues for future research and clinical application.

Prenatal maternal feeding plays an important role in fetal development and has potential to cause long-lasting epigenetic modifications. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding, single-stranded RNAs that serve as one epigenetic mechanism. Though miRNAs have crucial roles in fetal programming, growth, and development, there are limited data regarding maternal diet and sheep miRNA expression. Therefore, weanalyzed high and low maternal dietary protein for miRNA expression in sheep fetal longissimus dorsi. Pregnant ewes were fed an isoenergetic high-protein (HP, 160–270 g/day), low-protein (LP, 73–112 g/day), or standard protein diet (SP, 119–198 g/day) during pregnancy. miRNA expression profiles were evaluated using the Affymetrix GeneChip miRNA 4.0 Array. Twelve up-regulated, differentially expressed miRNAs (DE miRNAs) were identified targeting 65 genes. The oar-3957-5p miRNA was highly up-regulated in LP and SP compared to HP. Previous transcriptome analysis identified integrin and non-receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase genes targeted by miRNAs detected in the current experiment. A total of 28 GO terms and 10 pathway-based gene sets were significantly (padj < 0.05) enriched in target genes. Most genes targeted by identified miRNAs are involved in immune and muscle disease pathways. Our study shows dietary protein intake during pregnancy affects fetal skeletal muscle epigenetics via miRNA expression.

Background: The management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) focuses on dietary interventions, physical activity, and pharmacological therapy. Strategies that enhance adherence to the diet could play a pivotal role in managing this population. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of outpatient nutritional guidance supplemented by digital media with exclusively standard outpatient nutritional guidance in pregnant women with GDM. Methods: This was a randomized, patient-blinded clinical trial conducted at the Diabetes and Pregnancy outpatient clinic from February 2021 to January 2023. Pregnant women with GDM were randomly allocated into two groups: the Control Group (CG) received exclusively outpatient nutritional guidance, and the Intervention Group (IG) received outpatient nutritional guidance along with reminders via WhatsApp. Dietary intake (calories, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and fibers) was evaluated using 24-hour dietary recalls (24HR). Glycemic control and the need for pharmacological treatment were also assessed. Mann-Whitney tests were applied to numerical variables, and Fisher's exact test or Chi-square tests were used for categorical variables. Results: 81 women were included, 34 allocated to the CG, and 47 to the IG. Patients were followed for a period of 4 to 8 weeks. Few differences were observed in glycemic control between the two groups over the follow-up period. There were no statistical differences in pharmacological therapy (p=0.498); 188 24HR were conducted in the CG and 290 in the IG. Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) play crucial roles in signal transduction, cell differentiation, and transcriptional regulation. Many disrupted genes associated with mental disorders are identified as IDPs, and emerging evidence suggests the functional role of IDPs in neuropsychiatric disorders. However, few studies comprehensively explore the functional association between protein disorder properties and different mental diseases. To address this gap, we collected disrupted gene sets for seven mental diseases (MDD, SCZ, BP, ID, AD, ADHD, ASD) and a control gene set from normal brains using DisGeNET and GeneCards databases. The state-of-the-art predictor IUPred2A was then utilized to calculate the disorder properties , followed by a thorough comparison between the disordered proteins in mental diseases and healthy controls. Functional enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction networks were conducted to investigate the IDPs’ functional roles in psychiatric diseases. Additionally, we demonstrated the role of IDPs in protein binding formations through a case study of alpha-synuclein using protein docking. Our findings reveal that differentially expressed proteins in mental disorders, especially in ASD and ADHD, exhibit more IDPs than those in healthy controls. IDPs in psychiatric disorders are significantly enriched in neurodevelopmental pathways and play an important role in in gene expression regulation. Our results indicate distinct functional patterns of disorder proteins among mental diseases and healthy controls. When comparing the IDPs between ASD and ADHD, we observed that IDPs in ADHD are more likely linked to the synaptic signaling and regulation, while IDPs in ASD are more tendentiously related to diverse and complex biological processes. Our work offers valuable insights into the important functions of IDPs in psychiatric disorders, enhancing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in psychiatric disorders.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most fatal common cancers affecting both men and women, representing about 3 percent of all new cancer cases in the United States. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of pancreatic cancer risk with alcohol consumption as well as folate intake. We performed a case-control study of 384 patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer from May 2004 to December 2009 and 983 primary care healthy controls. Our findings showed no significant association between risk of pancreatic cancer and either overall alcohol consumption or type of alcohol consumed (drinks/day). Our study showed dietary folate intake was modestly but significantly inversely associated with pancreatic cancer (OR=0.99, P <.0001). The current study supports the hypothesis that pancreatic cancer risk is reduced with higher food-based folate intake.

Here we report a comparative study of the pyhtochemical profile and a biological activity of the two onion extracts, namely A. cepa L. and A. × cornutum (Clementi ex Visiani 1842). Identification of flavonoids and anthocyanins and their individual quantities were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The potency of both extracts to scavenge free radicals was determined by DPPH (2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) methods. DNA protective role was further tested by single-cell gel electrophoresis (COMET) assay and by Fenton’s reagent causing double strand brakes on pUC19 plasmid. In the presence of both extracts, a significant decrease in the DNA damage was observed, which indicates a protective role of A. cepa and A. × cornutum on the DNA strand brakes. Additionally, cytotoxicity was tested on glioblastoma and breast cancer cell lines. The results showed that both extracts had antiproliferative effect, but the most prominent decrease in cellular growth was observed with glioblastoma cells

Scene classification plays an important role in the intelligent processing of high-resolution satellite (HRS) remotely sensed image. In HRS image classification, multiple features, e.g. shape, color, and texture features, are employed to represent scenes from different perspectives. Accordingly, effective integration of multiple features always results in better performance compared to methods based on a single feature in the interpretation of HRS image. In this paper, we introduce a multi-task joint sparse and low-rank representation model to combine the strength of multiple features for HRS image interpretation. Specifically, a multi-task learning formulation is applied to simultaneously consider sparse and low-rank structure across multiple tasks. The proposed model is optimized as a non-smooth convex optimization problem using an accelerated proximal gradient method. Experiments on two public scene classification datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves remarkable performance and improves upon the state-of-art methods in respective applications.

Originally developed to image the shadow region of the central black hole in Sagittarius A* and in the nearby galaxy M87, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) provides deep, very high angular resolution data on other AGN sources too. The challenges of working with EHT data have spurred the development of new image reconstruction algorithms. This work briefly reviews the status of the EHT and its utility for observing AGN sources, with emphasis on novel imaging techniques that offer the promise of better reconstructions at 1.3 mm and other wavelengths.

Thistle (Onopordum acanthium) has been traditionally employed for liver protection, however, we recently identified silibinin, the main bioactive compound of thistle extract, as an in vitro pancreatic lipase inhibitor, which suggested a potential role as anti-obesity agent. This study aimed to assess, in vivo, the efficacy, safety, and effects of silibinin on human lipase. As a secondary objective, we evaluated potential changes on gut microbiota after silibinina treatment. A randomized trial comparing 150mg/silibinin, 300mg/silibinin, and a thistle extract (equivalent to 150 mg/silibinin) with placebo and orlistat/120mg was conducted. Fecal fat excretion, clinical parameters, and microbiota changes were analyzed. Orlistat showed the highest fecal fat excretion, although thistle extract had similar results (p = 0.582). The 150 mg/silibinin group reported the fewest adverse effects. Both silibinin and orlistat reduced plasma triglycerides (p=0.016) and waist circumference (p=0.001). Specific microbiota changes, such as increases in Mycobacteriaceae and Veillonellaceae, were associated with higher fat excretion. Silibinin proved to be safe and effective for obesity, with minimal adverse effects and no significant changes in microbiota diversity. Further studies are needed to explore its microbiota-related benefits.

Background: Colorectal Cancer screening programs are effective in reducing incidence and mor-tality. In Europe, every FIT+ patient is referred to colonoscopy. Available data shows that ~75.0% of these patients are negative. It is desirable to select patients at greater risk of having a positive colonoscopy. Methods: 711 subjects, aged 50-74, attending the screening program of ASL-NA-3-SUD (Na-ples, Italy), were enrolled in a cross-sectional study to evaluate the performance of QuantiDNA™ test and non-inferiority of an alternative approach (AAP). This evaluation is based on FIT+ and QuantiDNA™+ patients referred to colonoscopy, compared to Standard of Care (SOC), colon-oscopy following a FIT+ test alone. A non-inferiority margin for Colorectal Neoplasia (CN) and Advanced Adenomas (AA) was set at -10% and at -3.8% for CRC. Results: The odds ratio was 1.76 (p-value= 0.009). The detection rate of AAP was 15.9% for colorectal neoplasia (CN), 13.0% for advanced adenoma (AA), and 3.0% for CRC. The risk dif-ference between AAP and SOC was -5.07% (95% C.I -9.23, -0.90) for CN, -4.02% (95% C.I. -7.89, -0.16) for AA, and -1.04% (95% C.I. -3.16, 1.07) for CRC. This data suggests that AAP is non-inferior to SOC for detecting CN, AA, and CRC. The expected decrease in colonoscopies is 33.4%. Conclusions: The QuantiDNA™ test is straightforward, non-invasive, and well-tolerated. Data from this study indicates it is effective in the reduction of the need for colonoscopy examina-tions (-33.4%) and is non-inferior to SOC in the detection of significant colorectal lesions.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing manufacturing, serving as a digital makeover tool that collects essential production data. The transition to IoT generates vast data volumes, requiring robust storage and system architecture. Cloud computing steps in here, accommodating these needs with ease. In this setup, a network of sensors across a manufacturing unit captures valuable data, which is transmitted to the cloud. Specialized software then transforms this data into operational performance insights. This digital integration can elevate a manufacturing business, coalescing with existing systems to deliver remarkable results. As the IoT gains popularity, digital manufacturing is poised to soar. However, security has become a paramount concern, especially for retrofitted IoT devices operating with limited human intervention. Researchers have proposed various solutions for IoT security issues. In this study, we conduct a literature review (LR) to identify the security requirements for retrofitting IoT devices in manufacturing. Our goal is to provide a straightforward roadmap for industry stakeholders, highlighting the most suitable security solutions for their retrofitted IoT systems. Our review focuses on scientific papers from the past four years, specifically addressing the security and simplicity of retrofitted IoT architecture in manufacturing. The overarching aim is to define the security needs for IoT retrofitted devices in manufacturing, facilitating the smooth integration of process data into cloud platforms.

Brain metastasis is a severe and complicated cancer that requires timely screening and follow-up approaches using precise segmentation techniques for effective surgical intervention, radiation therapy, or monitoring the disease progression. In this study, we explore the efficacy of transfer learning in improving the automatic segmentation of brain metastases on Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans with the subsequent possibility of using it in clinical practice for preventive examinations and remote diagnostics. We train three deep learning models on a public dataset from the Brain Tumor Segmentation 2024 Challenge, then fine-tune these pretrained models on a small private dataset and compare them to models trained on private data from scratch. The results indicate that models utilizing transfer learning achieve superior accuracy and generalization in segmenting brain metastases. We also observed that the custom loss function significantly enhances performance compared to the default configuration. This study highlights the importance of leveraging transfer learning in medical imaging to address challenges associated with small, specialized datasets.

An MFI zeolite (Si/Al = 40) was desilicated by alkaline treatment in order to generate mesopores. Temperature, alkali concentration and treatment duration were adjusted to maximize mesoporosity while preserving the zeolite structure. Special attention was paid to the characterization of the strength and accessibility of the acid sites. The catalysts were tested in the isobutane/butene alkylation, a reaction typically catalyzed by zeolites but limited by coke deposition. Additionally, glycerol esterification with acetic acid was used as test reaction, due to the requirement of large pores to take part. The results confirmed that mesopores were successfully generated in the MFI zeolite, and the diffusion through the solid was enhanced, but the active sites remained mainly confined in the micropores.

Living systems are capable on the one hand, of eliciting a coordinated response to changing environment (aka adaptation) and on the other hand, they are capable of reproducing themselves. Notably, adaptation to environmental change requires the monitoring of the surroundings, while reproduction requires monitoring oneself. These two tasks appear separate and making use of different sources of information. Yet both the process of adaptation as well as that of reproduction are inextricably coupled to alterations of genomic DNA expression, while a cell behaves as an indivisible unity in which apparently independent processes and mechanisms are both integrated and coordinated. We argue that at the most basic level, this integration is enabled by the unique property of the DNA to act as a double coding device harboring two logically distinct types of information. We review biological systems of different complexity and infer that inter-conversion of these two distinct types of DNA information represents a fundamental self-referential device underlying both systemic integration and coordinated adaptive response.

Jute fiber reinforced composites have become a very promising alternative to synthetic fiber composites because of their favorable environmental characteristics, cost efficiency, and good mechanical properties. The present review provides a comprehensive examination of the manufacturing processes and mechanical properties of composites reinforced with jute fibers. This study investigates the influence of several fabrication methods, such as hand lay-up, compression molding, injection molding, pultrusion, etc. on the mechanical properties of the composites. It also provides the SWOT analysis of various manufacturing processes of jute fiber reinforced composites. The important aspects including fiber orientation, fiber-matrix adhesion, and the effects of different surface treatments on improving mechanical characteristics such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance are discussed. The difficulties associated with moisture absorption, degradation, and the lack of uniformity in jute fibers, as well as approaches to alleviate these problems are presented. The goal of this study is to establish a basis for future investigation and advancement in enhancing the mechanical properties of jute fiber reinforced composites.

Background: Family and Community Nurse specialists are advocates of a holistic model of care in multidisciplinary primary care teams. The study aimed to describe and understand the experiences and perceptions of family and community nurse specialists with regard to their employment situation in primary care teams in Spain; Methods: A Qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Eighteen family and community specialist nurses from different autonomous communities in Spain participated. Individual interviews and a focus group were conducted; Results: The results showed two themes and four sub-themes: 1) Current work situation of the Family and Community Nursing specialist: a) The lack of social and work recognition, and b) The advantages of working with Family and Community Nursing specialists; and 2) Support network and system of rejection: a) Systematic ambivalence towards Family and Community Nursing and b) Need for institutional support. Conclusions: Their inclusion in primary care teams fosters the nurse-patient bond, increases and/or maintains patient quality of life and promotes patient health empowerment. However, there is a great lack of knowledge on the part of society and health administrations regarding the functions of these nurses.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) represents a transformative technology that connects medical devices, sensors, and healthcare systems to enable real-time monitor-ing, data sharing, and advanced decision-making in healthcare. While the technical and clinical potential of IoMT has been explored extensively, research on the funding patterns and their implications remains sparse. This paper analyzes funding in IoMT research using bibliometric methods to assess the spatial dimensions of funded and non-funded research across different countries and regions. By employing Synthetic Knowledge Synthesis (SKS), the study triangulates quantitative and qualitative ap-proaches to provide insight into research trends, thematic differences, and the rela-tionship between funding and healthcare outcomes such as the Global Health Index (GHI). The results reveal that funded research exhibits higher publication rates in high-impact journals and is more concentrated in countries with stronger healthcare systems and higher R&D expenditures. However, countries with lower healthcare in-vestments are also increasingly contributing to IoMT research, likely in pursuit of im-proving healthcare outcomes. Thematic analysis shows that funded projects empha-size artificial intelligence applications in e-health and telemedicine, while non-funded research tends to focus on IoMT's role in pandemic management. These findings pro-vide insights into the global landscape of IoMT research funding and its impact on public health advancements.

This numerical study investigates the impact of reaction temperature, molar ratio of CH4:CO2, and catalyst porosity (p) on H2 yield and H2 selectivity during biogas dry reforming over a Ni/Cr catalyst. Using COMSOL Multiphysics, we conducted detailed simulations to elucidate the underlying reaction characteristics. Our findings reveal that increasing p significantly enhances H2 production and H2 selectivity, while simultaneously reducing CO selectivity. This effect is attributed to the improved mass transfer within the catalyst bed, leading to more efficient reactant conversion and product formation. Additionally, we observed a strong correlation between higher reaction temperatures and increased H2 yield and H2 selectivity, confirming the endothermic nature of the reforming process. By optimizing these operational parameters, our results suggest that Ni/Cr catalysts can be effectively employed for the sustainable production of H2 from biogas.

In order to study the influence factors of vertical bearing capacity of pile foundation under the special address condition of multi-layer karst cave, the finite element model of foundation pile in double-layer karst area was established by using a commercial general finite element software Ansys, the bearing capacity of concrete pile foundation with different rock height, different ec-centricity and different elastic modulus under the gradually increasing load was studied. The results show that: (1) Under the condition of constant external load, the maximum displacement of pile foundation increases with the increase of eccentricity; (2) With the increase of concrete strength, the maximum displacement decreases gradually, but the corresponding maximum stress is roughly the same; (3) The height of the rock cave has a great influence on the bearing capacity of the pile foundation. In the construction process, it is necessary to minimize or avoid passing through the area with higher karst caves.

Sputum induction (SI) is a non-invasive technique to obtain lower airway samples from people who do not spontaneously produce sputum. Since its introduction in 1958, its use has significantly increased for various respiratory conditions, especially with the establishment of standardized techniques. It has been used in pediatric research since 2002, starting with asthma studies. It is a safe and repeatable procedure for non-expectorating children. The ability to analyze both cellular and fluid components of sputum provides valuable information about lung diseases. This work reviews the utility of sputum induction in pediatric respiratory research and its potential clinical applications. We also discuss the safety, tolerability, and side effects profile of the procedure, emphasizing its significance in pediatric respiratory research. Despite the valuable insights gained from SI studies, challenges remain for widespread clinical utilization, requiring further refinement of the technique and increased accessibility in clinical settings.

The potato is the most important non-cereal food crop, and thus improving potato growth and yield is in the focus of agricultural researchers and practitioners worldwide. Several studies reported beneficial effects of silicon (Si) fertilization on potato performance, although plant species from the family Solanaceae are generally considered as non-Si-accumulating. We used results from two field experiments in the temperate zone to gain insight into silica accumulation in potato plants as well as corresponding long-term potato yield performance. We found relatively low Si contents in potato leaves and roots (up to 0.08% and 0.3% in the dry mass, respectively) and negligible Si contents in potato tuber skin and tuber flesh for plants grown in soils with different concentrations of plant available Si (field experiment 1). Moreover, potato yield was not correlated to plant available Si concentrations in soils in the long-term (1965-2015, field experiment 2). Based on our results we ascribe the beneficial effects of Si fertilization on potato growth and yield performance reported in previous studies mainly to antifungal/osmotic effects of foliar-applied Si fertilizers and to changes in physicochemical soil properties (e.g., enhanced phosphorus availability and water holding capacity) caused by soil-applied Si fertilizers.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide over-equilibria have been found computationally in kinetic dependencies of methane reforming catalytic reactions (steam and dry reforming) using conditions of the conservatively perturbed equilibrium (CPE) phenomenon, i.e. at the initial equilibrium concentration of hydrogen or carbon monoxide.  The influence of pressure, temperature, flow rate and composition of the initial mixture on the position of the CPE point (the extremum point) was investigated in a wide domain of parameters. It is demonstrated that the CPE phenomenon significantly increases the product concentration (H2 and CO) at the reactor length which is significantly less than the reactor length required to reach the equilibrium. The CPE-point was interpreted as the “turning point” in kinetic behavior.  Recommendations on the temperature and pressure regimes are different from the traditional ones related to the Le Chatelier’s law. Obtained results provide valuable information on optimal reaction conditions for complex reversible chemical transformations, offering potential applications in chemical engineering processes.

We are presenting a new method for the treatment of large macular holes (MH) with the use of an inverted flap consisting of both internal limiting membrane (ILM) and epiretinal proliferation (EP). A prospective interventional case series was conducted from September 2021 to January 2023. MH patients with coexistent EP visualized preoperatively in macula optical coherence tomography and MH minimum linear diameter larger than 400 microns underwent standard pars plana vitrectomy with the creation of an inverted petaloid flap (consisting of both ILM and EP) and gas tamponade. 16 eyes were included in our study. MH closure was successful in all the eyes with a single procedure. Preoperative minimum linear diameter was 707.63(±164.02μm) and preoperative best corrected visual acuity was 1.11±0.52. Postoperative BCVA was 0.51±0.20 (p=0.01) at 6weeks postoperatively and final BCVA was 0.45±0.20 (p=0.008). EP can be safely combined with ILM for the creation of an inverted, petaloid flap to cover and facilitate the closure of large MH.

As urbanization continues to increase, key conservation areas like World Heritage sites are being altered. This transformation is a cause for concern as it threatens the Outstanding Universal Value of these sites. To address this issue, a research question was formulated: How urban is World Heritage? The research focused on identifying and monitoring urbanization in heritage core zones listed on the World Heritage by tracking changes in built-up areas from 1985 to 2015. The findings revealed that urban developments, including housing, transport infrastructure construction, visitor accommodation facilities, and land conversions, have significantly impacted heritage properties. More than a third (37\%, 426) of the cultural heritage properties reported urban development, with the highest occurrences in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Pacific. Furthermore, these regions also displayed the highest rate of change per year between 1985 and 2015. This indicates the urgent need to identify and monitor the urbanization of World Heritage to preserve their OUV amidst increasing urban development.

Spin Assisted Layer-by-Layer (SA-LbL) assembly is one of the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly variants. It is considered as the fastest LbL assembly, however, the deficiency of layering quality on bigger polymeric support size poses a significant challenge to the application of SA-LbL assembly at a larger or industrial scale. To address the challenge, combined spin-spray assisted Layer-by-Layer (SSA-LbL) is employed to prepare membrane. In this study, nanofiltration (NF) thin film composite membranes were prepared by alternate deposition of branched-polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) on polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane support. The resulting membrane was then tested to separate NaCl from water. One of the membranes produced in this work, i.e., (PEI/PSS)10 achieved rejection rate of 76.2 %; permeability of 2.79 l/h·m2·bar tested at pressure of 10 bar, temperature of 24.58 ± 0.51 °C , and NaCl-Feed concentration of 2076.75 ± 40.51 ppm. The membrane fouling resistance was also examined in 5 days-test. The membrane showed stable performance and lost only about 30% flux from the initial flux due to fouling which was comparable to that of commercial NF membrane such as NF90. Hence, this work shows that SSA-LbL can be considered as a promising and innovative membrane fabrication technique as it offers flexibility and applicability for preparing membrane from various materials as well as pertinence to industrial scale.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate compliance and accuracy in comparison with traditional PD diaries for tracking motor symptoms using a new smartphone application (My Parkinson’s) and paper diary strategies. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with progressive motor symptoms. Treatment becomes more challenging as PD progresses, motor complications in the form of wearing-off phenomenon and levodopa-induced dyskinesia develop. Traditional paper diaries and clinical scales used to evaluate patients may be inadequate in assessing whether the patient is “on” or “off,” resulting in less-than-ideal treatment changes. Methods: A randomized crossover design was utilized to examine 22 advanced PD patients who underwent symptomatic assessment with both diaries during two separate 24-hour periods seven days apart. The compliance and accuracy of data were assessed by comparing diary entries with the clinical examination notes and WhatsApp queries. Latterly, patients' diary preferences were also evaluated.; Results: The digital diary had significantly better compliance and accuracy than the paper diaries, with substantial/almost perfect levels of agreement (κ = 0·615 to 0·818) between logged symptoms and clinical examination notes. 65% of patients preferred the digital diary for follow-ups, and there was no significant difference in ease of use compared to paper diaries. Conclusions: Digital diaries are helpful in the clinical management of PD patients as they minimize recall bias and reduce data errors in appropriately selected patients. Our study suggests a broader adoption of digital health technologies in PD management. Still, additional research is necessary to improve the tools and assess long-term patient outcomes.

Somatic embryogenesis (SE) provides alternative methodologies for the propagation of grapevine (Vitis spp.) cultivars, conservation of its germplasm resources and for crop improvement. In this review, the current state of knowledge regarding grapevine SE as applied to these technologies is presented, with a focus on the benefits, challenges, and limitations of this method. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the different steps involved in the grapevine SE process, including callus induction, maintenance of embryogenic cultures, and the production of plantlets. Additionally, the review explores development of high-health plant material through SE, the molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying SE, including the regulation of gene expression, hormone signalling pathways, and metabolic pathways as well as its use in crop improvement programmes. The review concludes by highlighting the future directions for grapevine SE research, including the development of new and improved protocols, the integration of SE with other plant tissue culture techniques, and the application of SE for the production of elite grapevine cultivars, for the conservation of endangered grapevine species as well as for cultivars with unique traits that are valuable for breeding programs.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is a widespread ailment among young dogs globally, characterized by high morbidity, mortality, and significant infectivity. Due to its grim prognosis, it is often likened to canine "cancer" with a medium-term mortality rate of 46.43% and late-stage mortality reaching up to 100%.Current treatment modalities primarily encompass fluid therapy, antiemetics, antimicrobial medications, pain relievers, and enteral nutrition. However, the absence of specific internationally recognized medications necessitates substantial care expenses. This review aims to elucidate recent advancements in pharmacological interventions for mitigating CPV infection symptoms, underscoring the potential of novel pharmaceutical technologies in veterinary medicine to enhance clinical outcomes for afflicted animals and their caregivers，lay a theoretical foundation for the development of specific drugs.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have revolutionised computer vision technology by automatically learning hierarchical representations of image data, leading to state-of-the-art performance in visual recognition tasks. This article presents a comprehensive review of deep CNNs, from their evolution and architectures to the current state-of-the-art research. The review also provides the core concepts and building blocks of CNNs and their concise mathematical representations. Furthermore, it explores applications of deep CNNs in three popular domains, including medical diagnosis, remote sensing, and facial recognition. This review will benefit researchers and practitioners in computer vision and artificial intelligence, as well as industry professionals seeking to leverage the latest advancements in deep learning technologies.

Non-destructive, accurate, and timely approach for crop yield prediction at field scale is vital for precision agriculture. This study aimed to investigate the appropriate wavelengths and their combinations to explore the new SIs derived from UAV hyperspectral images in predicting yield during the growing season of spring maize. The best wavelengths and new SIs, including the difference spectral index, ratio spectral index, and normalized difference spectral index forms, were obtained by the contour maps constructed by the coefficient of determination (R2) from the linear regression models between the yield and all possible SIs screening out from the 450-950 nm wavelengths. The results showed that the most sensitive wavelengths were 640-714 nm at WJQ, 450-650 nm and 750-950 nm at SKS, and 450-700 nm and 750-950 nm at FJJ. The new SIs established here were different across the three experimental fields, and their performance on maize yield prediction were generally better than that of the published SIs. In addition, the new SIs presented different response to various N fertilization levels. This study demonstrated the potential of exploring new spectral characteristics from remote sensing technology for predicting field-scale crop yield in spring maize cropping systems before harvest.

The intrusion of seawater in coastal aquifers in Greece is a particularly widespread phenomenon. The coastline of Greece has a length of 15,147 km. Once groundwater resources are contaminated, remediation strategies are difficult, costly and time consuming. In this paper three coastal aquifer systems of Peloponnese are studied. Initially the main ions and cations were calculated for the three aquifers. According to the results from hydrochemical analyzes Na+,Mg2+, Ca2+, SO4-2, Cl- have high values and are affected by the intrusion of seawater into the coastal aquifers. It estimates the vulnerability of groundwater to the intrusion of seawater. Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software, maps are prepared for the presentation of each parameter of the GALDIT method. The main factors that affect the seawater intrusion are basically presented in the 6 letters of the acronym GALDIT. The analysis of each parameter is as follows: Groundwater occurrence (aquifer type: unconfined, confined, and leaky confined), Aquifer hydraulic conductivity, depth to groundwater Level above the sea, Distance from the shore (inland distance perpendicular from shoreline), Impact of existing status of sea water intrusion in the area and Thickness of the aquifer. The final map that emerged from the study of the three groundwater systems shows the vulnerability of seawater intrusion in Peloponnese. The maps show that the groundwater system of Larissos presents lower vulnerability to the seawater intrusion compared to the other two groundwater systems. This is because the occurrence of flysch in the northern part of the area acts as a barrier to the penetration of seawater.

Background: IoT and Big Data are newer technologies that can provide substantial support for healthcare systems and help overcome their shortcomings. The aim of this paper was to analyze literature production descriptively, thematically, and chronologically from an interdisciplinary perspective in a holistic way to identify the most prolific research entities and themes. Methods: The synthetic knowledge synthesis qualitatively and quantitatively analyzes the production of literature through a combination of descriptive bibliometrics, bibliometric mapping and content analysis. For this analysis the Scopus bibliometric database was used. Results: In the Scopus database, 2272 publications were found, which were published between 1985 and June 10, 2024. The first article in this field was published in 1985. Until 2012 the production of literature was steady increasing, after that exponential growth began, which reached its peak in 2023. The most productive countries were the USA, India, China, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany and Italy. The content analysis resulted in 8 themes (four from the perspective of computer science and four from the perspective of medicine) and 21 thematic concepts (eight from the perspective of computer science and 13 from the perspective of medicine). Conclusions: The results show that IoT and Big Data have become key technologies in preventive health. The study outcomes might represent a starting point for the further development of research that combines multidisciplinary aspects of healthcare.

An energy production system consisting solar collector, biogas dry reforming reactor and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was assumed to be installed in Kolkata, India. This study aims to understand the impact of climate condition on the performance of solar collectors with different lengths of parabolic trough solar collector (dx) and mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid (m). In addition, this study has evaluated the amount of H2 produced by biogas dry reforming (GH2), the amount of power generated by SOFC (PSOFC) and the maximum possible households (N) whose electricity demand could be met by the energy system proposed, considering the performance of solar collector with the different dx and m. As a result, the optimum dx was found to be 4 m. This study revealed that temperature of heat transfer fluid (Tfb) decreased with the increase in m. Tfb in March, April and May was higher than that in other months, while Tfb from June to December was the lowest. GH2, PSOFC and N in March, April and May were higher than that in other months irrespective of m. The optimum m was 0.030 kg/s.

Background: Young people with intellectual developmental disabilities have a persistent delay in the development of executive functions. Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly being used as a cognitive intervention tool, with significant effectiveness demonstrated in different types of populations. Methods: This pilot study aims to investigate the impact of a cognitive training program utilizing VR on young adults diagnosed with intellectual developmental disability (IDD). The participants (N=15) served as their own control group and were assessed three times: weeks 0, 8 and 16, with a rest period (0-8 weeks) and an intervention period (8-16 weeks). The assessments included measures of cognitive function, provided by E-Prime®. Results: Overall, an improvement in working memory and inhibitory control was found after the intervention, but not in sustained attention. Conclusions: These findings suggest that VR-based cognitive training holds promise as an effective intervention for enhancing cognitive abilities in young adults with intellectual developmental disability.

Antarctica has attracted increasing interest in understanding its microbial communities, metabolic potential, and as a source of microbial hydrolytic enzymes with industrial applications, for which advances in next-generation sequencing technologies have greatly facilitated the study of unculturable microorganisms. In this work, soils from seven sub-Antarctic islands and Union Glacier were studied using a whole-genome shotgun metagenomic approach. The main findings were that the microbial community at all sites was predominantly composed of the bacterial phyla Actinobacteria and Cyanobacteria, and the families Streptomycetaceae and Pseudonocardiaceae. Regarding the xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism pathway, genes associated with benzoate, chloroalkane, chloroalkene, and styrene degradation were predominant. In addition, putative genes encoding industrial enzymes with predicted structural properties associated with improved activity at low temperatures were found, with catalases and malto-oligosyltrehalose trehalohydrolase being the most abundant. Overall, our results show similarities between soils from different Antarctic sites with respect to more abundant bacteria and metabolic pathways, especially at higher classification levels, regardless of their geographic location. Furthermore, our results strengthen the potential of Antarctic soils as a source of industrially relevant enzymes.

With the development of salt cavern gas storage construction technology, the construction of large-scale gas storage salt caverns using sediment voids is expected to solve the problem of low effective volume formation rate and poor construction economy of high-impurity salt mines. There are few studies on the long-term operation mechanical behavior of salt cavern gas storage under the influence of sediment accumulation currently. This paper studies the influence of sediment accumulation height, particle gradation, and operating pressure on the stability of salt caverns by constructing a coupling model of sediment particle discontinuous medium and surrounding rock continuous medium. The continuous-discontinuous coupling algorithm is suitable for analyzing the influence of particle accumulation height and particle gradation on the creep shrinkage of salt caverns. The increase of sediment accumulation height slows down the creep shrinkage of the bottom of the salt cavern, strengthens the restraining effect on the surrounding rock of the cavern, and moves the position of the maximum displacement of the surrounding rock to the upper part of the cavern; the sediment particle gradation has little effect on the cavern volume shrinkage rate, and the greater the coarse particle content, the smaller the cavern volume shrinkage rate; the greater the operating pressure, the more conducive to maintaining the stability of the cavern, slowing down the upward movement of the sediment body and increasing the gas storage space in the upper part of the cavern. This research results can provide a reference for evaluating the long-term operation stability of sediment-type high-impurity salt cavern gas storage.
